I find OJ and Papers mischaracterization in the fandom really saddening. Its a main reason im not a big fan of payjay myself— Paper isnt a soft, uwu boy or whatever people call it. Shes shown to be physically strong (withstanding things being thrown at her, carrying a piano, etc.) and mentally strong. She's awkward and anxious but it doesnt make her a baby that needs to be protected? And don't even get me started on OJ. Sure , i do enjoy whenever people push his flaws and recognize them and incorporate them in his relationships with others (trust me, i do the same. I exaggerate them sometimes, even.) BUT its either they make him the most EVIL and Abusive guy ever, or they make him absolutely one-note with no personality. It makes me really upset.
I know its bound to happen in a fandom, especially with a ship and characters THIS old, and their fanon appearances are going to stick forever (I've done the same thing with both of these characters when i was younger) but i just wish there was some improvement on the understanding of their characters. And maybe some appreciation of them without the other. Let them have time to breathe by themselves. Not all paper content has to be with OJ, and not all OJ content has to be with Paper.
Thats just my little thought on it all, i suppose. It's just something I've noticed over the years

one of the TK's biggest pieces of his character arc, something he always regretted, was that Owen spent all his time working when TK was a child

in my rereading flowey is not a good lifecoach era and this shit kinda sucks flowey why are you telling him your life story??? why not go after your curiosity you literally brought up instead of this dumb plot you haven't even thought out like it'd be much more interesting for flowey to try to investigate papyrus's past (wink wink nudge nudge) and figure out why he's the way he is. like generally a more interesting plot. and if you're gonna go with this dumb idea at least manipulate even a LITTLE better flowey you do NOT need to pull out your backstory??? you also wouldn't do that so idk what the fuck you're on about like just go "oh gee ur so cool and strong and i feel so safe around you cause youre the toughest guy ikoww... but im worried bout you cause youre so nice too and you give too many chances 🥺🥺🥺🥺 also undyne's not letting you in the royal guard isn't she so mean for that." like flowey should be a manipulative mastermind why was the best thing he could come up with was just telling papyrus his backstory??? also why does papyrus just take that like bitch you should know that's literally asriel dreemurr?? that's literally his story?

After rewatching the Thanks For Watching trilogy, I actually have to double down on my controversial opinion: Hunter never having to directly face off against Belos again after Thanks to Them is actually super satisfying and cathartic in an understated, underrated way. He said everything he needed to say after the worst thing that Belos ever did to him, and from then on, he didn't know it yet but he was free. I'm so happy for him.

Yesterday I reached page 44 of the "teenagers AU" story (I need to stop calling it that because there's more to it than just adolescence...) and, as I've been writing it in a notebook which contains most of my other longer fics and which is almost full, I flipped through those hundreds of pages on a whim once I was done with my writing session.
It was then that I found a little doodle of teenage!Jillian and Suzanne that I had done when first I tried to write this story... Exactly one year ago.
Originally it was set to be a oneshot, a single scene of youthful silliness in a continuity where both of them would have known one another before the show's events (there was also an idea of changing a few things more -- I had considered making Vincent into Suzanne's brother, for instance). It fought me all the way, however, so I let it rest and worked on other things and now... Now here we are, at page 44 and counting, lol, as I alter bits and pieces of canon so that, yes, our two ladies might have a shared (fan)fictional past together at last. Funny how things go.

I am so fed up with hard binaries. A think must be wholly one way or wholly another. There is no grey. There is no "sorta". There is nothing in between. I fucking hate it. Things are complicated, you're not going to be able to look at anything meaningfully until you accept that

"Antiochos’ and Stratonike’s activities in the eastern part of the [Seleukid] empire are largely shrouded in mystery, but, as Engels has argued, Antiochos was far from idle since he embarked on a large building programme and was active in securing the frontier. There is some evidence to suggest that his new bride accompanied him for much of this period. We can perhaps identify Stratonike’s presence with her new husband in the Upper Satrapies through the gold coinage minted in Susa and Baktria in c . 287. The two gold coin sets are of the same type, the obverse features the laureate head of Apollo facing right and the reverse features Artemis in an elephant biga facing left with the legend ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΣΕΛΕΥΚΟΥ in exergue.

Figure 2: Coin of Seleukos I from Baktria Depicting Apollo on the Obverse and Artemis with Elephant Biga on the Reverse (Houghton and Lorber 2002, SC I no. 257).
The reverse image of Artemis in the elephant biga is within the same design type as a large range of other coinage issued by Seleukos I celebrating the success of his elephants and thus his eastern campaigns. The appearance of Artemis is however unique to these coin types. This suggests the emphasis on the close links between the twin gods, Artemis and Apollo, depicted on the obverse and reverse of this coinage . Since there appears to be as a close link between Apollo and Antiochos as there is between Zeus and Seleukos, the presence of Artemis could be seen as a symbol for Stratonike. This would create a series of parallels: Seleukos/Zeus, Antiochos/Apollo, and Stratonike/Artemis. The first two reflect what we see for these two kings at the list of priests of Seleukid kings in Seleukeia in Pieria . Additionally, it may be notable that the sister-wife ideology [...] appears to be evident later in the reign of Antiochos.
As all of the Apollo/Artemis cointypes were produced on high value gold coinage, this suggests that it was issued in order to commemorate a significant event. While the type was similar to other Seleukid coinage, the shift from Athena to Artemis was clearly discernible and unique. The arrival of the new joint-King and Queen in the region to take up residence would have been a suitable moment for the issuing of the new coin type. This advertisement of their new rule certainly falls in line with Seleukos’ wedding speech which confirmed their new roles."
-David Engels & Kyle Erickson, "Apama and Stratonike – Marriage and Legitimacy", "Seleukid Royal Women" (edited by Edited by Altay Coşkun and Alex McAuley). The pictures of the coins are screenshots from the book.
#historicwomendaily#stratonike#antiochus I soter#seleukid empire#hellenistic period#ancient history#history#'Antiochus’ and Stratonike’s activities in the eastern part of the empire are largely shrouded in mystery' don't do this to me#this mystery is mainly because of lack of accessibility or of evidence than lack of activity - but it's still a shame#also re the 'sister-wife ideology'#as historians have pointed out Stratonike was called 'hirtu' aka 'principal wife' in the famous Borsippa Cylinder of Antiochus I#an unusual title which indicates her precedence but also implies a polygamous situation (which was normal in the Hellenistic period)#centuries later Stephanos of Byzantion claimed that Antiochus named the city of Nysa 'after his wife Nysa'#Stephanos isn't really reliable: he's almost definitely wrong about the adjacent information he gives about the city of Antioch being named#after Antiochus's mother#but it may nonetheless indicate he had a minor wife named Nysa#epigraphic evidence also suggests Antiochus married a woman called 'sister-wife'#which many scholars have theorized was Nysa (as his half-sister)#though others believe the title was most likely honorific and shouldn't be taken literally#(for example Laodike - queen of Antiochos III - was also called sister-wife when we know she was actually his cousin)#so the epigraphical evidence may indicate a non-sibling Nysa or Stratonike#if it was a non-sibling Nysa then she may have also been a cousin or relative#but these coins of Antiochus and Stratonike as Apollo-and-Artemis clearly does play into the 'sister-wife ideology'#we know Antiochus strongly associated himself with Apollo and Stratonike made generous donations at Delos at Artemis-and-Apollo temples#so IF the title was honorific then it could have likely referred to Stratonike as well#also - we have no idea who Nysa was but if a city was named after her I wonder if her marriage was to boost local alliances?#which doesn't prelude the idea of her being a relative#we also don't know when they married - he married Stratonike in his late 20s so he may have even been married to her before that. who knows#anyway. the title of 'hirtu' being applied for Stratonike was VERY unique for the Seleukids...it's interesting to think about#(ik nobody but me cares about this but oh well)

I'm really glad elyss came several years before melliwyk, because mel's alignment shift from chaotic neutral to chaotic good sometimes feels a little embarrassing in an 'I can't keep my own feelings to myself for the sake of committing to the bit' sort of way, but the counterpoint to that is that elyss, steadfastly true neutral, just simply Does Not Care about anyone other than her own loved ones or anything outside her own immediate interest no matter how much I sometimes wish she would
#she has a soft spot for children but that's the only real exception. other people's problems are none of her business!#she's not gonna look for your kidnapped husband or whatever unless the paladin wants to (he wants to. this is my loophole as a player lol)#whereas *I* wanna befriend and adopt every NPC and do quests and help people out of genuine desire to help#melliwyk is still more self-interested than not but at the end of the day she fundamentally really is a good person#she just lost track of it for awhile. being around people again has reminded her that she cares about people actually#she IS bothered by needless suffering. she IS smart enough to recognize when smart people handwave 'necessary sacrifices' to be cruel#she DOES oppose evil on principle rather than just because of how it directly affects her or her friends and family--#not just passively and in general but actively enough to want to do something about it herself#and I dunno it's nice. it's nice that it feels like that's not just me muddying the waters with my desires as a player--#but that it's just something *neither* of us realized when I started playing her but that was nonetheless always true#and honestly I also think it's nice that elyss is Like That but that I don't think there's anything wrong with her for it#she's not evil! she's not hurting anyone who didn't deserve it! she's literally just trying to mind her own business#she's not going to needlessly or carelessly hurt people just for her own gain like early campaign melliwyk would have#she's true neutral like a wild animal is true neutral and That's Fine#the ONE downside I suppose with mel is that 'NICE does not mean GOOD' is compelling to me#especially when your stereotypical chaotic neutral dnd character is an edgelord asshole#but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ maybe if her field of study had more opportunities for human experimentation lmao#melliwyk the experimental necromancer or behaviorist or summoner has a different relationship with ethics I have no doubt#melliwyk has READ studies with Dubious Ethics and gone 'I mean they couldn't have GOTTEN results like this otherwise'#really the biggest difference between Good Melliwyk and Neutral Melliwyk is opportunity for temptation. which is also compelling#my OCs#melliwyk#elyss

What are your favorite Plantagenet-related novels, and why do you love them?
Hi! I'm so sorry, I don't read lots of medieval English historical fiction, and the ones I have read are pretty terrible (three guesses which).
Once again: sorry! If anyone else has any recommendations, feel free to share them!
#ask#I've heard that Sharon Kay Penman's Plantagenet trilogy is pretty good? I haven't read it though so I can't say#'The Sunne in Splendour' (Penman's WotR book) was absolutely terrible though#It has all the hallmarks of a classic Ricardian novel. It IS one of the classic Ricardian novels I think?#Richard is an entirely innocent selfless righteous man with a glorious and divinely-blessed reign who's the victim in every situation#Isabel Neville was treated awfully. Margaret of Anjou was treated awfully#Elizabeth Woodville was somehow treated worse than both of them combined and was ridiculously sexualized on top of it#Penman's tagline for her should've honestly been 'You thought THIS character was bad? Never fear - Elizabeth Woodville is 10x worse!'#The book goes out of its way to emphasize how she was the worst thing to ever happen to England; how the Woodvilles made the 1450s look#like 'petty squabbling'; how Elizabeth made Margaret of Anjou look like a 'veritable saint by comparison'#also I distinctly remember her own husband yelling at her that she would sleep with a leper if it meant her becoming queen#This line just about sums it up: 'Warwick doubted there had ever been a Queen as little liked as the woman Edward had taken as his wife'#I'm like 99% sure that Cersei Lannister was primarily based off Penman's Elizabeth. The similarities are uncanny#Though Cersei is nonetheless treated better and given infinitely more depth than Elizabeth was - that's how badly she was depicted#I want to call her a Disney villain on steroids but frankly that would be inaccurate because even they are given more respect#I was always interested in Elizabeth but this book was one of the main reasons I became so defensive of her#What else...?#Penman's characterizations of Thomas Gray and Edward of Lancaster were pretty on par with classic Ricardian novels so I wasn't surprised#(though I will say that despite Edward of Lancaster being treated terribly he was still afforded more depth and sympathy than Thomas was)#What did surprise me was the fact that she wrote ANTHONY WOODVILLE as a violent scheming thug. Yes really#Honestly anyone remotely related to the Woodvilles is portrayed as cartonnishly evil#And EDWARD V oh god. This 12-year old kid is depicted as a cold cruel capricious tyrant who's more Woodville than royal (classism anyone?)#I'm 99% sure Joffrey Baratheon was based off Penman's portrayal of him. His dynamic with Elizabeth certainly matches Cersei's with Joffrey'#... anyway this rant has nothing to do with anon's question#sorry
