in my rereading flowey is not a good lifecoach era and this shit kinda sucks flowey why are you telling him your life story??? why not go after your curiosity you literally brought up instead of this dumb plot you haven't even thought out like it'd be much more interesting for flowey to try to investigate papyrus's past (wink wink nudge nudge) and figure out why he's the way he is. like generally a more interesting plot. and if you're gonna go with this dumb idea at least manipulate even a LITTLE better flowey you do NOT need to pull out your backstory??? you also wouldn't do that so idk what the fuck you're on about like just go "oh gee ur so cool and strong and i feel so safe around you cause youre the toughest guy ikoww... but im worried bout you cause youre so nice too and you give too many chances 🥺🥺🥺🥺 also undyne's not letting you in the royal guard isn't she so mean for that." like flowey should be a manipulative mastermind why was the best thing he could come up with was just telling papyrus his backstory??? also why does papyrus just take that like bitch you should know that's literally asriel dreemurr?? that's literally his story?
#thank you papyru for heh... encouraging me to give it another look#idek why i thought this was so good i'm already getting annoyed#take it from me; the mascot of having bad takes#lock in... consume things with your brain on sometimes#maybe itll make you like it more and maybe itll make you realize “wait this kinda sucks.”#still mad they didn't go with the much more interesting plot in favor of torture#ooc torture but like torture nonetheless#flowey is not a good life coach#AND he's also fucking stupid apparently??? just go after why papyrus is (according to you) so desperate for affection#why waste your time on a plan you don't even know will work because you have no long game

After rewatching the Thanks For Watching trilogy, I actually have to double down on my controversial opinion: Hunter never having to directly face off against Belos again after Thanks to Them is actually super satisfying and cathartic in an understated, underrated way. He said everything he needed to say after the worst thing that Belos ever did to him, and from then on, he didn't know it yet but he was free. I'm so happy for him.
#he was in so much pain when he was focused on vengeance in FTF. it's such a moment of relief when WAD lets him breathe#the owl house#the owl house hunter#emperor belos#i don't even think hunter's arc was *completely* unscathed by cancellation-induced pacing issues#i think he would've benefitted from more time to sit with flapjack's death and to flesh out the new magic (esp limitations)#(i think they could've spun up an interesting new angle on the disability metaphor if they'd had like...#an A-plot and two B-plots across half a season. give some payoffs to his prior glyph usage maybe)#but with the cancellation they couldn't have given him that time without taking any away from luz (or others but mostly luz)#and to be clear: i think they made the right choice#because hunter is a great character but nonetheless one that the fanbase needs to be reminded is not the protagonist#anyways he might be the TOH character for which the ending stuck the least for me... BUT the fact that i still enjoyed it overall#is really a testament to the crew handling the cancellation in the best way humanly possible. IMO

I am so fed up with hard binaries. A think must be wholly one way or wholly another. There is no grey. There is no "sorta". There is nothing in between. I fucking hate it. Things are complicated, you're not going to be able to look at anything meaningfully until you accept that
#this post was inspired by talking about the regional diversity/lack thereof within the United States#because “50 countries in a trenchcoat” is hyperbolic yes but there is still a significant degree of regional variation#I'd argue to an above average degree#Like if you brought a Cajun a Midwesterner and a New Yorker into the same room#and I had no frame of reference and was told they were from 3 different English speaking countries#I'd probably believe you#not to mention that the US is legitimately the most geographically diverse country in the world#like it's not even close#google it#but there are nonetheless widespread standards and values that make a lot of these very different places feel quite similar#which makes America (at least to me) incredibly fucking interesting

"Antiochos’ and Stratonike’s activities in the eastern part of the [Seleukid] empire are largely shrouded in mystery, but, as Engels has argued, Antiochos was far from idle since he embarked on a large building programme and was active in securing the frontier. There is some evidence to suggest that his new bride accompanied him for much of this period. We can perhaps identify Stratonike’s presence with her new husband in the Upper Satrapies through the gold coinage minted in Susa and Baktria in c . 287. The two gold coin sets are of the same type, the obverse features the laureate head of Apollo facing right and the reverse features Artemis in an elephant biga facing left with the legend ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΣΕΛΕΥΚΟΥ in exergue.
Figure 1: Coin of Seleukos I from Baktria Depicting Apollo on the Obverse and Artemis with Elephant Biga on the Reverse (Houghton and Lorber 2002, SC I no. 163).
Figure 2: Coin of Seleukos I from Baktria Depicting Apollo on the Obverse and Artemis with Elephant Biga on the Reverse (Houghton and Lorber 2002, SC I no. 257).
The reverse image of Artemis in the elephant biga is within the same design type as a large range of other coinage issued by Seleukos I celebrating the success of his elephants and thus his eastern campaigns. The appearance of Artemis is however unique to these coin types. This suggests the emphasis on the close links between the twin gods, Artemis and Apollo, depicted on the obverse and reverse of this coinage . Since there appears to be as a close link between Apollo and Antiochos as there is between Zeus and Seleukos, the presence of Artemis could be seen as a symbol for Stratonike. This would create a series of parallels: Seleukos/Zeus, Antiochos/Apollo, and Stratonike/Artemis. The first two reflect what we see for these two kings at the list of priests of Seleukid kings in Seleukeia in Pieria . Additionally, it may be notable that the sister-wife ideology [...] appears to be evident later in the reign of Antiochos.
As all of the Apollo/Artemis cointypes were produced on high value gold coinage, this suggests that it was issued in order to commemorate a significant event. While the type was similar to other Seleukid coinage, the shift from Athena to Artemis was clearly discernible and unique. The arrival of the new joint-King and Queen in the region to take up residence would have been a suitable moment for the issuing of the new coin type. This advertisement of their new rule certainly falls in line with Seleukos’ wedding speech which confirmed their new roles."
-David Engels & Kyle Erickson, "Apama and Stratonike – Marriage and Legitimacy", "Seleukid Royal Women" (edited by Edited by Altay Coşkun and Alex McAuley). The pictures of the coins are screenshots from the book.
#historicwomendaily#stratonike#antiochus I soter#seleukid empire#hellenistic period#ancient history#history#'Antiochus’ and Stratonike’s activities in the eastern part of the empire are largely shrouded in mystery' don't do this to me#this mystery is mainly because of lack of accessibility or of evidence than lack of activity - but it's still a shame#also re the 'sister-wife ideology'#as historians have pointed out Stratonike was called 'hirtu' aka 'principal wife' in the famous Borsippa Cylinder of Antiochus I#an unusual title which indicates her precedence but also implies a polygamous situation (which was normal in the Hellenistic period)#centuries later Stephanos of Byzantion claimed that Antiochus named the city of Nysa 'after his wife Nysa'#Stephanos isn't really reliable: he's almost definitely wrong about the adjacent information he gives about the city of Antioch being named#after Antiochus's mother#but it may nonetheless indicate he had a minor wife named Nysa#epigraphic evidence also suggests Antiochus married a woman called 'sister-wife'#which many scholars have theorized was Nysa (as his half-sister)#though others believe the title was most likely honorific and shouldn't be taken literally#(for example Laodike - queen of Antiochos III - was also called sister-wife when we know she was actually his cousin)#so the epigraphical evidence may indicate a non-sibling Nysa or Stratonike#if it was a non-sibling Nysa then she may have also been a cousin or relative#but these coins of Antiochus and Stratonike as Apollo-and-Artemis clearly does play into the 'sister-wife ideology'#we know Antiochus strongly associated himself with Apollo and Stratonike made generous donations at Delos at Artemis-and-Apollo temples#so IF the title was honorific then it could have likely referred to Stratonike as well#also - we have no idea who Nysa was but if a city was named after her I wonder if her marriage was to boost local alliances?#which doesn't prelude the idea of her being a relative#we also don't know when they married - he married Stratonike in his late 20s so he may have even been married to her before that. who knows#anyway. the title of 'hirtu' being applied for Stratonike was VERY unique for the Seleukids...it's interesting to think about#(ik nobody but me cares about this but oh well)

I'm really glad elyss came several years before melliwyk, because mel's alignment shift from chaotic neutral to chaotic good sometimes feels a little embarrassing in an 'I can't keep my own feelings to myself for the sake of committing to the bit' sort of way, but the counterpoint to that is that elyss, steadfastly true neutral, just simply Does Not Care about anyone other than her own loved ones or anything outside her own immediate interest no matter how much I sometimes wish she would
#she has a soft spot for children but that's the only real exception. other people's problems are none of her business!#she's not gonna look for your kidnapped husband or whatever unless the paladin wants to (he wants to. this is my loophole as a player lol)#whereas *I* wanna befriend and adopt every NPC and do quests and help people out of genuine desire to help#melliwyk is still more self-interested than not but at the end of the day she fundamentally really is a good person#she just lost track of it for awhile. being around people again has reminded her that she cares about people actually#she IS bothered by needless suffering. she IS smart enough to recognize when smart people handwave 'necessary sacrifices' to be cruel#she DOES oppose evil on principle rather than just because of how it directly affects her or her friends and family--#not just passively and in general but actively enough to want to do something about it herself#and I dunno it's nice. it's nice that it feels like that's not just me muddying the waters with my desires as a player--#but that it's just something *neither* of us realized when I started playing her but that was nonetheless always true#and honestly I also think it's nice that elyss is Like That but that I don't think there's anything wrong with her for it#she's not evil! she's not hurting anyone who didn't deserve it! she's literally just trying to mind her own business#she's not going to needlessly or carelessly hurt people just for her own gain like early campaign melliwyk would have#she's true neutral like a wild animal is true neutral and That's Fine#the ONE downside I suppose with mel is that 'NICE does not mean GOOD' is compelling to me#especially when your stereotypical chaotic neutral dnd character is an edgelord asshole#but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ maybe if her field of study had more opportunities for human experimentation lmao#melliwyk the experimental necromancer or behaviorist or summoner has a different relationship with ethics I have no doubt#melliwyk has READ studies with Dubious Ethics and gone 'I mean they couldn't have GOTTEN results like this otherwise'#really the biggest difference between Good Melliwyk and Neutral Melliwyk is opportunity for temptation. which is also compelling#my OCs#melliwyk#elyss

What are your favorite Plantagenet-related novels, and why do you love them?
Hi! I'm so sorry, I don't read lots of medieval English historical fiction, and the ones I have read are pretty terrible (three guesses which).
Once again: sorry! If anyone else has any recommendations, feel free to share them!
#ask#I've heard that Sharon Kay Penman's Plantagenet trilogy is pretty good? I haven't read it though so I can't say#'The Sunne in Splendour' (Penman's WotR book) was absolutely terrible though#It has all the hallmarks of a classic Ricardian novel. It IS one of the classic Ricardian novels I think?#Richard is an entirely innocent selfless righteous man with a glorious and divinely-blessed reign who's the victim in every situation#Isabel Neville was treated awfully. Margaret of Anjou was treated awfully#Elizabeth Woodville was somehow treated worse than both of them combined and was ridiculously sexualized on top of it#Penman's tagline for her should've honestly been 'You thought THIS character was bad? Never fear - Elizabeth Woodville is 10x worse!'#The book goes out of its way to emphasize how she was the worst thing to ever happen to England; how the Woodvilles made the 1450s look#like 'petty squabbling'; how Elizabeth made Margaret of Anjou look like a 'veritable saint by comparison'#also I distinctly remember her own husband yelling at her that she would sleep with a leper if it meant her becoming queen#This line just about sums it up: 'Warwick doubted there had ever been a Queen as little liked as the woman Edward had taken as his wife'#I'm like 99% sure that Cersei Lannister was primarily based off Penman's Elizabeth. The similarities are uncanny#Though Cersei is nonetheless treated better and given infinitely more depth than Elizabeth was - that's how badly she was depicted#I want to call her a Disney villain on steroids but frankly that would be inaccurate because even they are given more respect#I was always interested in Elizabeth but this book was one of the main reasons I became so defensive of her#What else...?#Penman's characterizations of Thomas Gray and Edward of Lancaster were pretty on par with classic Ricardian novels so I wasn't surprised#(though I will say that despite Edward of Lancaster being treated terribly he was still afforded more depth and sympathy than Thomas was)#What did surprise me was the fact that she wrote ANTHONY WOODVILLE as a violent scheming thug. Yes really#Honestly anyone remotely related to the Woodvilles is portrayed as cartonnishly evil#And EDWARD V oh god. This 12-year old kid is depicted as a cold cruel capricious tyrant who's more Woodville than royal (classism anyone?)#I'm 99% sure Joffrey Baratheon was based off Penman's portrayal of him. His dynamic with Elizabeth certainly matches Cersei's with Joffrey'#... anyway this rant has nothing to do with anon's question#sorry

If I may ask, what exactly is the issue with the Emotional Spectrum? I'm kind of mixed on the execution, but given the elements of the Green Lantern mythos, it seems like a logical extension.
i don’t think the logical extension of there being an emotional spectrum is what bothers me per se (well. with the star sapphires as a notable exception) i am just not really keen on the idea of there being multiple corps in existence bc it undermines why the existence of even one was so ill-advised and prone to abuses in power. modern green lantern lore in general is very unfocused to me like sure there are some cool ideas wrt space adventures and warring factions and different rings lining up with different life experiences but in the end what i read green lantern comics for was the critical political element and commentary and i don’t see that reflected to quite the same effect in the way johns reworks the mythos
#like some of the other corps (sinestro and red lantern for example) do present interesting questions as to how justice should be served#or why it should be served. etc etc. but ultimately johns still wants to maintain the overarching structures#which is personally useless to me like none of these structures should exist#and as a less pressing but nonetheless still impt reason i think it expands the mythos beyond reason personally#like there’s no way any level of depth can be achieved in exploring these factions while they’re a part of a larger dc universe#so now all the lanterns really do is play side piece to everyone else’s conflicts bc there’s no room to do anything else#and granted part of that has to do with the change in the comics market like it was way different back in the 80s#but even then i think it was comparatively contained#idk i think a lot of geoff johns ideas are literally just so different and new he was better off creating an original product#rather than trying to rewrite an existing history#it’s not like the green lanterns were an original concept anyway i’m sure he could have gotten away with something#outbox

I'm loving how, being stagings of the play and not reinterpretations, many productions are able to add some characteristic creative twist to it that adds or enhances something in particular
#Besides the German musical I watched yesterday Brambilla's Italian production of the play#I didn't like much its Cyrano or its Roxane but I loved its Christian. Easily one of my favourites for now#I was giving a look at first and fell on the scene with the cadets and it was OBVIOUS who Christian was#which is exactly the effect he should have! He was pretty and charming and sweet and fun. And I adored him in Act IV!#He was so heartbroken and so angry! He made me realise that when he is like 'what the hell are you saying about still writing letters?'#he is very logically shocked and angry? betrayed?‚ because there's really no need at that point!#Christian wanted to stop even before getting a kiss‚ but now he's married to her!#There was no need for Cyrano to keep writing her letters for him‚ especially not without Christian's knowledge#The way he tells Cyrano he'd like to write a goodbye letter to Roxane with that in mind seems even more like him wanting to write it#himself even if with maybe some help or support from Cyrano to do so more eloquently#In some productions Christian seems irritated by the fact that Cyrano has already written him one and he is so right to be mad!#I think this Christian enhanced many of these little things. He truly made me reconsider a few things of the entire situation#at that point and why he feels so betrayed and sadenned. There was no need at all...#I talk too much#I should probably delete this later#Cyrano de Bergerac#Aesthetically and musically this production was weird at times but interesting and often pretty. I loved the staging of act iv#I don't understand some musical choices or why at times they seem to be in the south Spain? Or that's the vibe it gave me haha#I loved that the moon moved and I KNEW they were going to make Cyrano die there but I loved it nonetheless#Christian was ready to fight and I love when they make him like that. Not just insulting Cyrano‚#but the insults as a way to incite him to duel. The 1950 version does this as well and I love him#The Christian in Solès' version I loved as well in the end‚ but probably this Italian one and the 1950 Christian are my favourite for now#I love some of what they do with the 1950 Christian. The developing of his friendship with Cyrano‚ how ready he is to fight‚ his insecurity#I adore that in a mix of wanting to prove himself and not wanting Cyrano and Roxane's chat to be disturbed he insists on taking#Cyrano's mission. And I ADORE how they look somewhat alike. The way they could get confused for each other from certain angles ugh#But I loved this Christian as well. How honest and open he is‚ how puppylike. How he is desperate and heartbroken‚#the way he cries in grief and anger and his voice breaks#Also the translation wasn't spectacular in form and was quite literal‚ but I liked the effect#Not too pretty‚ funny at times‚ but I think the Italian flowed wonderfully. It felt natural and organic#At times something I could actually hear in daily conversation. It was perhaps in part the delivery‚ but it felt like it wasn't only that

Am re-reading Hogg's Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner and I know it's not a new or original thought but it's just striking to me again how young George (younger) and his brother Robert must have been during the tennis match and Black Bull mob scenes.
If the 'famous session' refers to the 1703 session of parliament (or even if it refers to the previous year's sitting which Queensberry also oversaw), and if old Dalcastle married in 1687 (or later), then at most George could have been 16 and his brother 15, and it's probable that both boys are younger.
I don't remember too many of the details from the first time I read this book so will have to finish it before I make any further judgement. However I don't think it detracts from Robert's culpability or nastiness in any way to take into account his probable age in the earlier portion of the narrative. I think makes for a more interesting reading when forcibly reminded that he's a young teenager. Even taking into account different social mores and expectations placed on children in both the period in which the novel is set, and the early 19th century when it was written, it seems to me that that's an element that will still have particular significance for readers in the 21st century, regardless of one's personal experience with extreme forms of Presbyterianism.
#I mean it's probably been said before I haven't read much analysis of the novel in a while- or at least not of the psychology aspect#But I do feel that the image you first get in your head is that Robert is at least in his late teens and early 20s#at the time of the tennis match nonsense- I.e. a grown up demonic genius albeit with a chip on his shoulder#I'd say he's probably about 14?#Idk if anybody else remembers being 14 but oh boy does that make sense#I mean he's still a very unpleasant teenage boy don't get me wrong but nonetheless#In our day and age even grown adults are regularly affected by all kinds of brainrot and conspiracy theory stuff#We live in the internet age but I'm not entirely sure that there aren't comparisons to be drawn#Between unpleasant child Robert - called a wonderful boy by his parents; convinced he is Elect#highly book smart but deeply aware that there is something wrong about his family#Being tempted continually by visions of the Devil and raised in an age of constant civil and religious debate and strife#Where every side is utterly convinced of the complete moral validity and right of their own particular views#And some kid today coming out with all sorts of absolute nonsense as a result of being exposed to internet brainrot#Be it fascism or misogyny or even political views that I agree with but can become dogma and conspiracy theory in the wrong hands#In particular Robert's been raised in a very dogmatic household but also told exceptions will be made for him because he's special#Also something something late 17th century print culture boom and propaganda wars vs 21st century internet etc is this anything#I'm not necessarily saying this is a story for our times all I'm saying is there are timeless qualities in it#(Obviously that's what makes it a classic it's just I tend to notice more the portrayals of ill-made marriage#or Edinburgh mob violence and was less interested in the psychology of Mummy's Little Fanatic on the first reading)#Possibly the early part of the novel accidentally gives the impression that Robert is slightly older#because of throwaway lines like George mistaking him for a student of divinity#Even if Robert had been attending the university though that doesn't track#Based on what I remember of early 16th century norms and what little I know of late 18th century stuff#It would be perfectly normal for university students in Scotland in this period to start around the age of 14#Some went even earlier- I definitely remember coming across lads who matriculated at the age of 12 or 13 or younger#Idk maybe I was the only one who had that particular image of him as a young adult in my head#Maybe I was the only one who was too stupid to work this out earlier and it affected my reading#But still if there's one thing I'm taking away from this re-read it's going to be 'Dear god that is a 13/14/15 year old boy'#That being said don't want to overdo it; as a former teenage girl I used to hate when reading the Crucible and people were all#Oh that's just OBVIOUSLY what all teenage girls are like so not trying to compartmentalise boys; but at the same time o.O

hey i totally understand the guilt as an artist, i don’t do it professionally and i’m not held to a timeline or a quota so i can just put progress off in favor of other hobbies cough borderlands cough
my current piece i’m working on is about 3 months in the making, most of that time has been spent not working on it but i’m in the home stretch now!
point is it absolutely will get done no matter how long it takes, even if it’s just five minutes chipping away at it a week or whatever it looks like for you
and hell sometimes just starting on another part of that project or another project entirely is what it takes to get your ass in gear and keep going
do what you gotta do to get back into that flow state and whenever the next chapter is ready we’ll be ready and waiting with the occasional feral cat bouncing around in your ask box <3
Yeah, I use the jumping around method quite a bit to keep myself productive. I'm usually doing something to work on my wips, even if it's just trying to wrangle my notes into some semblance of order or tweaking my (super rough) outlines. Sometimes I'll even write snippets of future chapters when I get stuck. Anything to satisfy the desire to write, even if I feel like I can't get anything substantial out. Keeping up the momentum is important, you're right!
And if nobody's said this yet, proud of you that you've kept working on your project all this time 💖 There's no need to rush labors of love.
#something something productivity culture is evil#and the speed of consumption is fucking ridiculous#we've all heard it before#but nonetheless I'm always grateful that ppl are still interested in my fics despite how long they take me#you're wonderful 💗#bri answers
