Thoughts on The Double rewatch

tl/dr: The FML & SML romantic contrasts sum up like this:

Shen Yurong: Hello my darling, self-sacrificing trophy-wife. Your hands shouldn't touch weapons. They should only do dainty female things.

Xiao Heng: What's up, my fierce wild-cat? OMG your brain is sooooo freakin' sexy, btw. What? You need help learning how to kill someone? Hell yeah, Queen! *grabs her hand and head straight to the armory*

Like, seriously. Every time Shen Yurong has visions and/or flashbacks to his wife, it's basically Xue Fangfei giving c-drama tradwife vibes every time. She's either playing music, doing some calligraphy, or helping him out by selling her things and/or giving him advice constantly.

BUT every time Xiao Heng is seen thirsting over Jiang Li/XFF, it's when she's doing 5-D chess with politicians and talking herself and her family members out of trouble.

Just LOOK at him absolutely LOVING her fucking up the Li family plans. Man is totally turned on by how fucking SMART and CAPABLE she is.

Like, one thing about this scene in episode 16 is that I thought the ML was going to come running to protect/help out the FL here. I've watched enough c-dramas to expect that, ya know?

But not our man Duke Su! He's like: She's totally got this...And I should probably stay seated to manage my giant boner rn anyways.

And how green flag is that "advice" he gives her about not compromising herself & become a different person for someone else in ep 31???? It's pretty dang green, guys.

Point is: Shen Yurong only saw her as a trophy/trad-wife. Xiao Heng sees, and loves, ALL of her.

Such a great sequence - where Eun Ha got punched out by another little girl for touching her pretty doll and that girl's bitch mother refuses to apologize because this is the road to thievery etc etc and Ji Won gets angrier and angrier. And then HS shows up and I love the bitch mom being a little lost at how aggressively nice he is (he literally comes in and apologizes in the same breath.) And then:

Yes, he makes his beloved daughter to apologize to the girl who punched her and does not demand apology at all. You see the teacher melt and feel sooooo bad. And then there is this little argument between JW and HS - and it's so telling, she is coming from the position of just world and how you need to stand up for yourself openly and she's never had to be the weaker or dissemble to survive - she acts like a sane person with a happy life.

Meanwhile, HS with his background is all about how it looks.

That is something that has never been true in HS' life.

But also yeah, he's accepted he doesn't understand people on an emotional level but he knows what makes them react so...it's all the study.

Their view of the problem is different, isn't it? He's trying to protect Eun Ha from being labeled a troublemaker (because he knows how that can explode) and she's trying to protect Eun Ha's sense of justice (something he's never had but she believes in.)

And then the whole "I see she's mad, I really MUST make sure she's not mad" - he's so desperately attuned. And he doesn't stop until he sees she's not mad any more.

This scene with Eun Ha is one of my faves. Because he's taken her to eat egg tarts, her fave, and she's mad.

His explanation!!!! This sums up his life - he's been abused his whole life as the son of a serial killer and treated so nicely when he changed his identity as son of a hospital director (I mean, later in the ep, that dude tries to justify attempting to murder him back when even tho they were roommates and he was nothing but nice but the dude wanted his cash, by saying oh he must have been an evil killer.)

The way he got revenge for her by stealing that girl's doll that the fight was over and throwing it out.

And he buys her more egg tarts.

He fights for her in his own dysfunctional way, the way nobody ever did for him.

Episode 5 initial thoughts

What an episode. How did they manage to pack it into 25min?! Well done Laura Monti, the rollercoaster of emotions was on point!

Agatha left the trial hut very quickly, exchanging glances with Rio. Agatha knew Rio needed to take Alice's body, so made a quick exit. Potentially she didn't want the rest of the coven to see Rio either.

Though it kinda looked like Rio was disappointed Agatha was abandoning her - did she want/expect Agatha to help her?

After all that, Billy (we can call him that now, right?) was still blaming Agatha!

Oooooh how Agatha's demeanor changed when she was ready to tell him she knew who he was. I think she knew for a while. This was similar smile to when Rio told her "that boy is not yours".

"You're so much like your mother" - then Billy proceeds to wreck carnage. Yup, that tracks.

Long post rambling abt my SaH continuation au

Might not make tooooo much sense but I’m trying

Ok!!

So, it continues where ep 32 left off, bam in the gas chamber WHOOOOOOO I love child murder!! And it mainly Geum’s mental state during it, how he’s going back at forth between saving bam and keeping his cover, he manages it (how idk yet shhhhh) and he gets Bam and co out of the gas chambers and hides them under the tunnel system of the Wolf Den where people won’t find them

Geum expects to be able to calm down from this, but he can’t, for some reason his heart keeps racing and he can’t focus and he seems to be hearing something, or someone but it’s too faint for him to really make out yet

He ignores it though, it’s PROBABLY nothing right???

Bamsaegi and co wake up and are found by other FH scouts that came as backup, even though Bam doesn’t really wanna leave yet since he hasn’t even really seen Geum yet, but alas he has no choice but to go back home and come back later

For Geum, things go around the same as usual,

The wolves have a new plan!!! They realize that the Flower Hill soldiers are on fucking crack and are willing to die for just about anything and aren’t afraid of them, so they’re using a lil sci-fi…ish machine to use people’s fears against them and what better way to test it out is throw Geum right into the machine!! Aren’t they sooooo nice?

Now the wolves can’t see Geum’s fear, but they can see his reaction so Geum still has to be careful during this. They wanna see Geum overcome whatever it is hes afraid of (if he’s even afraid of anything) so he can fight against flower hill better and also to see how strong the machine even is (and to perhaps see if he’s really a spy according to Vixen!)

Geum goes in, but it’s weird, it’s nothing nightmarish or even scary its honestly pretty nice, a night open field, lots of flowers, reminds him of home. He can even hear someone humming, who is that anyways? He gets closer and sees a squirrel, is it Jul? There’s no way he’s afraid of Jul. Bam? No, he’s not really scary either, even if he was afraid of losing him it’s not something that would stall him really, but it’s neither of those things. It’s…Him. Him before he was a soldier.

Geum is OBVIOUSLY confused, why is he seeing HIMSELF in something that’s supposed to be his biggest fear, it disturbs him, especially since the other Geum keeps trying to talk to him! He’s so nice?? The complete opposite of him! Was this really how he was?? Why was this his biggest fear??

“Who…What are you?!”

“I’m you! Silly! Finally you start talking! I was worried you went deaf or something!”

“You aren’t me! You’re nothing like me!”

“Well not anymore! You’re a soldier now! Funny how people can change so quickly. It hasn’t even been that long and you can’t even recognize yourself.”

“What the hell…?? Is this thing broken this can’t be my biggest fear this-this is…!”

“Are you okay? You don’t look so good…”

Geum with all the questions racing through his head and the machine being very taxing, passes out before he can finish the test so has to be taken to the infirmary

He has a splitting headache when he woke up, Vixen was near him, asking what happened in there. Geum lies and says he doesn’t remember. Vixen is suspicious but just tells him to relax for a bit and that he can finish the test when he’s recovered, making a comment about how she was pleasantly surprised that he was afraid of something.

Geum hates waiting. He hates staring at the ceiling but these damn mice nurses won’t let him leave until he’s “perfectly healed” or whatever!! It’s late, he hears that faint noise in his head again, familiar but he still can’t quite make it out. He falls asleep.

Midnight, or later, he wakes up, it’s like his body jolts awake and moves on its own, he’s so dizzy but he can’t stop, no one seems to be stopping him either for some reason, he’s outside, none of the nurses even tried to stop him this time. He’s on a flower patch and kinda just…Falls on it. “I remember you giving me a bouquet in a place like this!” A familiar voice said, this time it was so clear. It was Goseumdochi!

Geumsaegi feels like hes going insane, he KNOWS goseumdochi is dead but he can hear him and he can see him! He’s RIGHT THERE! But he can’t touch him, it’s like he’s a ghost! He asks questions, a million of them, but with no answers, Goseum just stares at him and smiles.

And thus begins Geum’s slowly breaking! Varies things happen but two things remain consistent, he keeps going into the fear machine (and failing) and he keeps seeing Goseumdochi and failing to talk to him.

For the first arc of the story this is a constant and it eventually ends with him beating the machine by just…Killing the other version of him. After which Goseum finally starts to answer him.

This leads into Geum eventually questioning things about Flower Hill and himself,

But he isn’t the only character going through a revelation, part 1 Juldarami!!!!! Where is he anyways?

Jul was of course, recovering from the bullet he took. But now he’s fully recovered and ready to help and find Geum. And by GOD he is worried because the commanders, NO ONE, has heard anything from him. Radio silence.

Jul is determined to get to the bottom of it. He goes undercover with his only mission being finding Geum. One problem though, Geum is avoiding him HARD. Everytime Jul gets close Geum runs 20 feet away, so basically it’s a game of cat and mouse with Jul losing his MIND trying to find Geum, and eventually listing the help of…Bamsaegi!!!!

Bamsaegi feels absolutely awful for what’s happening and thinks it’s his fault, so he helps Jul try to find Geum whilst learning about the world outside Flower Hill as he goes undercover and getting particularly close with Huin (which causes him to defect later on!)

Through this both of them learn that Geum…Isn’t exactly the greatest, idolization isn’t a fun thing when the person sucks BALLS.

That’s basically the gist of it, few more things tho,

Throughout this Vixen is doing her own plot to overthrow Commander Wolf and eventually does so Geum has to deal with that during his whole crisis,

Mul!!!! I haven’t exactly finished his whole thing but here’s basically what I have so far!

Mulmangcho is still trying to get Geum exposed as the spy, and he’s getting desperate now that Geum has basically ousted his former position. So he needs to reset things, find himself, BEAT any fear he has so he can crush that squirrel and rip that beautiful fluffy tail of his! So he goes into the fear machine when no one is looking,

His fear is…Weird. It’s a maze with seemingly no exit. Every door leads to another door and those door lead to 39 revolving exit doors that lead him back where he started! It’s frustrating! He hates it! And he’s raging HARD!

He keeps hearing something, like someone is laughing at him. He keeps following and following, until he sees…Geum.

Well great his biggest fear is Geum WHAT A SURPRISE! This thing must be Einstein! Except Geum is…Weird, he isn’t talking, he’s just kinda…Standing there, Mul takes a step forward, he takes a step back, he keeps moving, Geum keeps moving, he runs, Geum runs, but to where?

Mul keeps following Geum, he seems to be getting farther in the Maze than he did before, in the background he can hear glimpses of his life but he isn’t really focusing on that. Geum is leading him to an exit! He’s almost done—And his brother pulls him out of it before he can finish.

Great.

Still, he didn’t understand, he wasn’t scared or nervous throughout the entire thing, so why was that his biggest fear?

(I’m thinking it can lead to Geum and Mul slowly understanding each other!)

It all ends with Geum quitting the military tho and seeing that the commanders SUCK so fun!!!

That’s basically everything, I hope to turn this into a fic or comic of some sort eventually <333

GoGoV 1&2

I was gonna watch both of these yesterday but I enjoyed 1 so much I spaced them out and saved 2 for today so I had a day to just think about the effects and miniatures work in 1. Honestly? You could kind of just watch it on its own and treat it as a really good standalone, like...rendition of a standalone mecha concept OVA into live-action.

You know I love: when a sentai really commits to its theme (see ToQ going in on how cool trains are). And this is an absolutely perfect intro for that. Great choice to hold back on the speaking villains for ep 1, or any ground combat at all and having the only threat be this titanic unspeaking volcano personified; it's all disaster rescue stuff, and they introduce all their tools and powers in that context! Rather than emerging from the void as Super Sentai Fully Formed, you get to see how this stuff was designed as emergency rescue equipment first, and their combat applications are a sorta improvised secondary use building on top of that. It's great!

It also means time for a lot of model vehicles rescuing people from model cities--the one in the second episode, despite introducing more Sentai Stuff, is the more thrilling scenario of the two--AKA bringing tokusatsu right back to its deepest roots: Thunderbirds, baby.

And then when they do do some fighting, it both feels like a real emergency and goes pretty hard!

There's a little looking at the camera to tell you characterisation, but that's the genre when you have so much to establish in 20-minute blocks, init; beyond that, I found Matoi really fun riding the line between capable at a dangerous job and out of his depth fighting demons; Matsuri at first came off as "also, girl is here", but when one of the others said "I wish I was as assertive as her" I realised in retrospect that huh, she does just sorta get people to do what she says; and Their Fuckin Dad, Man. What a weird charisma this dickhead brings. Fascinated to see where this family dynamic is going!

You also know I love: This genre of fantasy bikini armour. Her wings are sooooo cool and she's soooo brave for toting them around.

Well! Good show. Excited to see more!

ep 1-9 thoughts

Gwanhee: Why do so many of the girls like him? Well it's because he's tall, successful, and goofy. That'll get you a looooong way especially with pretty girls who are used to dating pretty boys with no substance (think pete davidson). Imo he's very rude and cocky but it's a front for obvious insecurity. He always has to be the center of the room to make sure he isn't ignored or overlooked. His ideal match is someone who can also command a room (minji), accept his ruff exterior (hajeong), and not take his words to heart (hyeseon). Say what you want about the guy but he was right about making this season interesting!

Hajeong: Girl stand up. You can do sooooo much better! Her and gwanhee would be a cute couple if he didn't have a fragile ego. Unfortunately hajeong is too mature for that. She's settling big time and she'll realize that looking back. She only wants him cuz her options are slim on the island.

Hyeseon: She's so pleasant! I love how all the girls brushed her off but she's unbothered and winning.

Gyuri: She tried to be the Jia of the season and it made her look dumb. Looks can only get you so far babe.

Miyeon: Red Flag! Everyone wants to talk about gwanhee but this girl is the definition of toxic. Love bombing then cold shoulder then jealousy and guilt tripping and sabotage. It's too much, I hope she picks therapy at the end.

Jinseok: I love him. Best man of the season. Funny, friendly, and fine as fuck.

Sieun: Um, she's too pretty to be doing any of this. I keep seeing wonyoung and jennie's offspring and it's distracting as hell. Glad she has a cute lil crush, hope it works out for her.

Minwoo/Miwoo/??: Boring.

Minkyu?: He's cute and seems so nice! The girls are sleeping on him!

Habin: He doesn't get screentime cuz he's fucking weird. His head grew ten sizes when all the girls picked him and he just gives awkward vibes.

I don't even know this mans name: The real estate guy. I'm so sorry you had to come on this show bro. Stick to tinder my guy.

MINJI: Look I have so many thoughts on this girl. Number 1, she IS the rizzler. Like y'all are talking about ew cringe but men eat that shit up! She knows how to play the game and she's a master at her craft. Also I'm really tired of people calling feminine, seductive women pick me girls. There is nothing wrong with having confidence. They're all literally there to flirt so why are you people acting scandalized that she's flirting, that's the whole point. I don't think the helicopter scene was disrespectful. She chose minkyu cuz they both like other people and were just going as bros like hajeong and habin. Also why tf would she have to be respectful of gwanhee and hyeseon's date? The whole point of the show is to steal people's dates! They're competing! She cried cuz she was upset, let's stop demonizing women for showing emotions especially crying! tbh I'm mostly shaking about the next ep and impending season finale, but this one was still pretty brutal

firstly, the goofs. vash fucking SNEESING and getting ruthlessly bullied by wolfwood is pretty much in spirit of their relationship in 98' anime and I'd love to see more of it (pls I hope there'll be a season 2)

scar reveal! I was afraid they're gonna give him a glow up and yeah, some scars are barely visible, but the other ones look awful. so, everything I hoped for, good to see he's in pain /j. also nico tried so hard not to stare at shirtless vash... he's looking away respectfully

vash is such a wet cat pathetic paperbag of a guy... just let that guy take a shot, barely flinched, took the bullet 'cause he thinks he deserved it. didn't even think of attending the wound until wolfwood said so. and, mind you, vash doesn't have any superhuman abilities so that must've hurt like hell

nico's job is so funny because to keep vash safe he has to get into mega epic fights, but also remind that idiot to eat and take care of wounds. again, vashwood duo feels more like the original now, after the sandsteamer. I think nico actualy started caring about vash since he saved the orphanage, it's great to see him conflicted with his mission

also policemen from ep 1 and the guy who shot vash are like... second best side characters in stampede and this is not a compliment. the best ones are nomads who ate worms btw

oh meryl, she's gonna girlboss so hard now... woe to all the haters and naysayers, she's getting character development and faces the same conflict as vash and nico thus gaining more narrative significance!! don't get me wrong, manga and 98' anime meryl was a crucial character, but she's getting much more freedom in stampede to develop and get into action

the moment where she gets up during wolfwood voiceover is when we start to see the "iron lady" and I'm so here for it! now we just have to wait for her designated therapy dog girlfriend to appear and when I can be at peace

shoko my beloved........... omfg i love her so fucking bad...... since she goes to work early in the morning the nights are when we get to spend the most time together and we love it!!!!!!!!!!!! after she comes home we eat a little something and usually take like an hour just to recharge by just lounging on the couch with out legs all tangled together while we watch a couple eps of some kind of a crime show. i play with her hair and it's just like a nice quiet little moment before we do anything else.

and then we move onto the bathroom. it's like a special place for us. yes i realize that sounds a bit funny lmao but it's the truth okay. we always do our skincare together, the nightly routine. and the thing is that our relationship has always been like a very mm open one in the sense of that nudity is very casual. it was like that even when we were just friends,, like it's very normal for one of us to idk go and take a piss while the other is literally right there lmao

anyway sometimes we shower together but since i'm the one that get a bit fussy over that, sometimes she showers alone but i'm still always there either sitting on the bathroom counter and yapping about my day or serenading her with my god awful singing voice. and after we've both changed into our pjs, we put on our cute little headbands and get to all the face washing and the skincare hehehe we usually light a few candles and dim the lights so it's a bit more cozy!!!!!!!!!!!!! sometimes we apply creams and moisturizers onto each other's faces while laughing softly it's really fucking nice:(((((((( sometimes i brush her teeth for her just for the fun of it too lmao i just want to take care of her after a long day yk? aaand if we wanna take more time, we hop in the bath instead. that's another favourite of ours - it's just so good to sit with her there, to relax together.

and after all of that, when we finally actually move to the bedroom we're both pretty tired already and so sleep comes rather fast which is good. we both used to have problems with falling asleep but after we started doing this little nighttime routine, it's gotten sooo much better. sure, there are still bad days where we just kind of lay there in silence, dragging shapes into each other's skin in the moonlight but most of the time, we manage to knock out very fast hehehehe

chapter 6 (infiltrated)

Robin had some interesting feelings about wally and birdy’s kiss

Maybe he's not exactly sure why— just that it bothered him, and he kind of leaves the emoting alone for a bit. bc he does like her but mb he doesnt realize how much he likes her…. yet.

wally on the other hand notices the slightest hints of jealousy and will be supporting the information away for later

chapters 9 (bereft) and 11 (terrors)

so, in episode 9, they had the brain blast amnesia, and Kaldur got super sick. 

Robin was all jealous. Which is something he had to come to terms with it, especially because ain't no way Wally would let him go. 

So maybe wally presses on it a little bit and Robin gets defensive, so he decides to let it go… for now…

But after 11, when Robin and Birdy had their little moment on the sofa, he brings it up again because now he knows some things. 

That was when birdy did her reveal to him, so maybe he's like maybe… I…. am… into…. her...

Final Thoughts: I’m really hoping that this isn’t the end of the charter drama even if it’s a temporary resolution! It’s such an interesting conflict, and it’d be fun to see it played with a little more. Loved the camaderie between the teachers in this episode—how they were all on the same page and working together for this cause and school that they believe in. This was a very feel good episode for our favorite work family. ☺️

look i too am pretty conflicted about the shiv pregnancy storyline (and its potential to be a narrative misstep, especially if season 4 is going to continue to be 1 ep = 1 day), and everyone's reactions and feelings are totally valid, but let's not pretend like it came completely out of nowhere. aside from the fact shiv has repeatedly been shown turning down alcohol, people have been theorising she was pregnant based solely on her being a woman putting her hand on her stomach at the end of season 3. plus all the talk of making babies and freezing embryos and horrific conversations about one's suitability for motherhood. one of the show's main themes is family trauma and the neverending cycle of abuse, sooooo yeah. them's the breaks. also, sarah said on the official podcast it was apparently always something that was on the writer's table because shiv is a woman

do i want tom and shiv to get back together because of a baby? hell no. is it a tired cliché? hell yeah. can they pull it off? i am reserving my judgement. for now

Pride Month Watch: Mama Gogo (ep 1-4)

I'm currently going through my Pride Month Watch List and Mama Gogo is on my list of shows/films I haven't watched before but have wanted to get to.

The only prior knowledge I had of this before was that it was created by Jojo, which is why it's been on my to-watch list for a long time. Before I started writing this, I did a quick check of the cast on MDL and realized that my posts on this show have the potential to turn into a whole lot of simping for some of the boys and Cris Horwang (I loved this gorgeous woman in Intern in My Heart, which I watched in March), so expect simping. There might not be much else, lol.
