[my favoritest persona fanfic ever I think so hard all the time about this author's writing style and how the characters are written how they handle trauma and growing up and moving on from all the Things that happened in the year they were phantom thieves. the way akechi and jokers relationship is written & the way their arcs are written . this is both a great take on the characters and persona 5 and also a very well written Story in general with well executed Plot and Arcs. Everything else by this author is also fire.]

"Yeah. I thought it was the drugs." Amamiya gestures at the floor, where wet syringes are scattered. "Is this real?"

Akechi realizes that he was tricked into killing a cognitive Ren in time to return and kill the real one. When he wakes up the next day, it's November 20th again, and he is a very stubborn man.

Unfortunately for his plans, so is Ren.

WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW FOR LIVE A LIVE

I've been playing through the Live A Live remake lately, and I just realized something.

Lucrece is the Gravity Falls of Medieval Europe.

The first seven chapters pretty clearly established that none of this is taking place in a fantasy setting, it's real-world actual Earth from real life. A heavily fictionalized version of Earth, to be sure, but Earth nonetheless (unless I missed the part about the Bakumatsu when Sakamoto Ryoma teamed up with a purple-haired ninja to fight a frogsnake demon, a clockwork cyborg, and a giant koi fish, and yet somehow he couldn't fight off some basic assassins a few years later. :V)

Then you get to the Middle Ages and all of a sudden you're in a medieval fantasy kingdom straight out of a Dungeons & Dragons campaign. The characters all speak in iambic pentameter, even the peasants. They worship Gods, plural, in a time and place where admitting you do so anywhere else would probably get you skewered. Two of your party members are straight-up flinging fireballs and summoning angels, a certain kind of grass that doesn't appear in any other chapter is a workable substitute for modern medicine (granted, so are soup dumplings, castella cake and beef jerky, apparently, but still) and the land is infested with little knights riding squirrels, killer plants, dog-people and Actual Dragons, none of which is remarked upon or treated as anything other than business as usual. The big threat on everyone's mind is a demon living in a mountain, while most other countries are more concerned with warring with each other - not that we'd know who Lucrece's neighbours are because other countries are never even mentioned. And that's before Odio completely screws everything up and the land gets overrun by baddies from all across time.

In short, it's very disconnected from Earth in a way that none of the other chapters are, even when taking all the fantasy elements in those chapters into account. You'd be forgiven for assuming it wasn't Earth at all but some kind of alternate dimension. This is where I compare it to the town of Gravity Falls, because:

They're disconnected from the outside world - what happens in Lucrece stays in Lucrece. No-one outside of it has ever heard of it, and no-one inside of it has any care what goes on beyond the borders.

They're a magnet for weird beasties and weird people - people who still worship pantheons in notoriously ultra-Christian medieval Europe, for example. Or someone who'll just take his shirt off in public and give it to the local hero for protection. :V

At some point, they get struck by an apocalyptic event that leaves the entire place infested with monsters even more weird than usual, and yet that event is strictly contained within its borders, unable to spread. This might actually explain why no-one's ever heard of Lucrece, because Odio killed everyone who lived there, wiped away all trace of its existence, and was then in turn killed by seven time travelers.

The big bad responsible for said event has powers of reality-warping, time-transcending scale, have a misanthropic streak, and have tried multiple times across time to screw up history. They're ultimately defeated by a team of ordinary humans (and some non-humans) pulling together with the power of trust and friendship.

And this really has nothing to do with anything, but Oersted does look kinda like classic Tumblr Sexyman Bill Cipher. He has the same hair, at least. :V

hiiii i just finished lifeboat <3 it was really good!!! i liked all the parts with akechi talking to his two personas, i thought they were really funny and well written. i love the concept of being able to directly talk to your personas, its such a unique way to show the character's true thoughts and feelings without directly saying them. i also LOVE ryuji's characterization. i love akechi's too but i'm very particular about ryuji's characterization in fics and lifeboat captures it perfectly. i love the dynamic between the two as well!! my favorite parts are where you can see akechi's cracks in his walls where he genuinely believes that ryuji cares for him. i hope in the future we see more of him talking with his personas about ryuji and learning to trust ryuji more. i also hope ryuji breaks away from the phantom thieves. i think the connection between him and akechi in this fic is something more real and deep than what he has with them and i can't wait to see them team up in the metaverse again. maybe with loki even instead of robin hood. i think it would be so healing for akechi to be able to show both sides of himself to someone, that way maybe he can learn that those two sides of himself CAN live in harmony. and it would be good for ryuji to be on a team permanently with someone who values his ideas. i also think it could be cool to see akchi being protective of ryuji again, the scene with mona dancing was one of my favorite scenes! thank you for taking the time to write such a great fic xx

The persona thing started as a funny little flourish for the laughs but now i do think it's a good way to spice up inner monologue and draw a line between someone's more immediate consciousness and the deeper subconscious that personas are supposed to represent... and this is especially gonna take precedence in the next chapter onward. Particularly i like using it for Akechi since i interpret Robin Hood and Loki as something akin to his Ego and Id, aka the angel and devil on the shoulder (but a tad more complicated). The subtlety it lends helps a great deal too!

THAT SLOWBURN RELATIONSHIP BUILDING IS MY BIGGEST THING WITH RYUGORO ITS GOTTA BUILD UP SLOW AND IN AKECHI'S HALF ITS GOTTA BE CAKED IN THAT HESITANT TO TRUST BUT DESPERATE TO HOLD ONTO ENERGY... this guy is so hesitant to trust anybody or even ask for help half the time and now he's got the most clingy, annoying but in a funny and thoughtful way guy latched onto his arm and he has to express feelings of appreciation for said guy???? disgusting, goro akechi shakes his head in repulse before making a mental note to buy ryuji dinner as thanks because he doesn't know how else to express gratitude.

meanwhile in the brain of ryuji sakamoto he suffers the aftermath of flying into a situation at the speed of sound and in that aftermath faces a dilemma of which he should be more concerned for his phantom thief comrades but instead is still supporting a supposed enemy for reasons that he himself is still unaware of, as is his pretty best friend. With Akechi's own questioning he himself faces a "why did i do that" as he can do nothing but shrug and reason it with a Signature Simple Sakamoto "cuz he's my friend and i felt like it" as he stuffs that "why" in the back of his brain so he can keep pushing it back with the simple answer.

they both don't completely get why they act the way they act, both for different reasons but they've both reached the point i wanted them at where they're friends that can support each other, fight with each other and come back all the same, and still have room to learn more about the other and even upgrade that confidant if they have it in them (so help me god they do) and more is coming, i've got a roadmap going and a few scenes done, though at the rate it's going i might have to make two short chapters but i suppose that does mean it'll be more content for the fic itself.

Lucky rabbit- Rabbit attributes such as ears and tail with high jumping, speed, and the ability to give small boosts in luck. Can transform into full rabbit for bigger luck boosts. 👑🏴‍☠️🛟

Fast as fuck boi - speed. Just. All the damn speed. Maybe not quite the speed of light but at some point there's no real difference is there? 🙋🏴‍☠️👑

Musical savant - not an Uta-level popstar but someone that inexplicably can play anything they put their hands on. Even if they've never played before, give them a free afternoon to experiment and they'll quickly learn all the ropes like they've been tutored for years. 👑🙋

Grace/charm- mostly a joke sort of thing, but basically everything they do just looks... Inexplicably perfect. They look photogenic at all times, even when they should be a mess. If you've seen "Haven't you heard, I'm Sakamoto" it's pretty much that. Also, side note, highly recommend but there is some slightly creepy/sleazy factor involving an in appropriate crush on a (ambiguously aged) minor from a housewife mostly in one episode but it's low-key a gag a few other times.🙋👑🛟🏴‍☠️

Tailor- expert in the craft of making clothes for all shapes and sizes as well as repair. 🙋🛟🏴‍☠️

Photography- they love taking pictures of things and honestly, they always come out wonderfully. 🙋👑🛟

Movies I watched this week (#174):

2 old Hungarian films:

🍿 Ferenc Molnár's classic The boys of Paul street is a novel about two honorable gangs of school kids, who are fighting over an empty lot in the center of Budapest of 1902. When I was their age (so early 1960's) it was called "מחניים", and it was one of my favorite books (together with these of Erich Kästner's, Yigal Mossinson's, Enid Blyton's, Karl May's, Jules Verne's, etc).

So it was wonderful to discover that it was made into a well-made drama in 1968. The premise of a syrupy children story from that time, made about a naive world, unaware of any future European world wars, doesn't bode well. But it retained all its earnest truths, honors and morals. It was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film (together with 'The Firemen's Ball', Truffaut's 'Stolen Kisses' and Bondarchuk's winner 'War and Peace'). In a week that was cinematically disappointing, that was my bright spot. 8/10.

🍿 Unrelated to David Cronenberg, The fly won the 1980 Oscars for animated shorts. It tell a story from a pesky fly's point of view.

I am trying to watch at least 25% movies directed by women. Female Directors (2012) was made by 2 young female graduates of a Beijing film school, who couldn't afford to make a "Real" studio movie, so they make an indie "Home" movie of themselves. Strong early Godard vibes with shaky handheld camera and bad potato sound. Fresh and candid look as they search for themselves via sex, cinema, money. It feels like I've been in all these alleys.... [*Female Director*].

Short Vacation (2020), a gentle, tiny Korean version of 'Stand by me', but without any histrionics or a dead guy. 4 unremarkable middle school girls, members of the photography club, receive analog cameras from their teacher, who suggest they use the summer break to take of 'the end of the world'. They decide to take the train all the way to the last station, and end up in the "middle of nowhere". 7/10.

My second Godzilla (after the 1954 original), Godzilla minus one, the latest in the franchise. The monster stuff was ridiculous, as usual I guess, but the human drama part recreating post-war Tokyo, and especially the cutest 2 year old baby girl got bonus points from me. 5/10.

🍿 In Monster, my 6th film by Hirokazu Kore, she stars as a single mother to a 11 year old son who starts exhibiting strange behavior. For most of the story, it feels like 'The kindergarten teacher' and 'Hunt', and 'The teachers' Lounge', where the accusations of abuse might not be true, but it ends as a beautiful heartbreak, softly told. With a tender score by Ryuichi Sakamoto, his last before his death. 8/10.

The Sensualist (1991), an erotic Japanese animation, in a traditional Ukiyo-e woodblock style, like the original story of which it is based. Combination Patrick Nagel, Hiroshige and very-adult Disney stories. Ends with a long, artistic 'Coitus'. M'eh.

Patisserie Coin de rue (2011) is Food porn for imbeciles who love Japanese cake shops. I have a serious sweet tooth myself, but this story was just too dumb. Gorgeous cinematography of beautiful patisseries, and religious reverie for desserts. I could barely last for 42 minutes.

The Contestant is a new British documentary about aspiring comedian "Nasubi", who participated in a grotesque Japanese Television show in 1998. For 13 months he was placed naked in an empty room and was told that in order to get out, he will need to win 1 million yen in write-in sweepstakes. He didn't know that his every move was being broadcasted and that he'd became a massive hit. A bizarre, real-life 'Truman Show', and possibly the very first 'Reality TV' show ever. It was stupid, and cruel 'Mass Entertainment'. Fortunately, there's a tiny point of redemption at the very end. 2/10. [*Female Director*].

Cœur fidèle (Faithful Heart) (1923), my first 'poetic realist' melodrama by French Impressionist Jean Epstein. A technical classic with modern editing, dynamic story telling and lots of expressive close ups. He was 26 when he made it on location in the port of Marseille.

Sleeping beauty is a disturbing erotic art film by an Australian auteur, with a small cameo for Sarah Snook. A pretty student freelancing as a hooker on a 'Story of O' type journey into the deep end of 'Sleep' fetishism. If it was made by a man, I would hate it uncategorically. As it was, I found it prurient and shallow, flat and cold. 2/10. [*Female Director*].

I saw Gifted before, and the ratings I gave it weren't too high. But I'm a sap for tearjerkers about special little girls and their single dad/uncle, so I gave it another go. The Hallmark-style custody battle was mediocre, but all the girl stuff left me in tears nonstop. Add some Cat Stevens to the score, and you get quality Soap. 7/10. (Photo Above). Re-Watch ♻️.

But this type of collage was done better and smoother in the Hungarian 'Final Cut: Ladies and Gentlemen' and Michel Hazanavicius' 'La Classe américaine'.

🍿 Dark passage, my first Film Noir by Delmer Daves. 5'10'' Bogart plays an innocent convict, who escapes from San Quentin, trying to prove his innocence. But wherever he goes, people around him keep falling dead. It was the third of four films real-life couple Bacall and Bogart made together. 1947 San Francisco and surroundings was lovely with so few people and cars on the roads.

I haven't seen Bob Fosse's acclaimed All that jazz since its premiere 45 years ago, so I was so looking forward for a re-watch. But after 3 days of attempting to go through it, I could muster only 33 minutes, before realizing how much I hated it, and had to stop. The genius Alpha male who kills himself in self-loathing, while abusing everything and everybody around him, is no longer appealing to me. The entitlement, misogyny, idealization of a legendary narcissist "Icon" was unbearable. ♻️.

🍿 I'm OK (2018) is even better. It is based on the life of Expressionist artist Oskar Kokoschka during WW1. Same frantic, hand-drawn splotchy style. 8/10. [*Female Director*].

🍿The Old, Old, Very Old Man (2007) is still earlier. Created with blue ink on a bathroom tile. The style here is dirtier, more primitive. [*Female Director*].

I haven't seen A simple Favor since January 19, but every time I recommend it to somebody, I feel compelled to check it out again. So about every 6 weeks now?! Jesus Christ, it's absurd!

Anyway, Anna Kendrick has the whitest teeth, and the worst taste in ugly shoes, on and off screen. My 10 Minutes Pinch Point Analyses still stands. 10/10. Re-Watch ♻️.

Surprisingly, I haven't seen any of Stormy Daniels porn work, but I had followed her story "with interest". The new documentary Stormy offers little new information to political junkies, but it details the harrowing path this brave woman had to endure, and the incredible price she had to pay. Unfortunately, it shows many clips of Orange Sphincter talking, something I try to avoid as much as possible. May he lose bigly in his current criminal case in NY, and also may he catch incurable rectal cancer today, and live the rest of his days in painful agony. [*Female Director*].

Sadako’s 90th Birthday Party!

On Saturday, June 29, long-time member Sadako celebrated her 90th birthday with the BCSF Sangha and friends of The Grateful Crane, a production that her eldest son, Soji, put together. The party started at 5:30 pm and was held in the social hall of BCSF. BWA members, friends, and family helped set up the social hall. 

A scalloped solid purple paper placemat was placed on every table with a salmon and chicken karaage bento. Hashi and napkins were on top of the bento. Placed above the bento was a small cardboard box that reads, “Okagesama de Sadako’s 90th Birthday, June 27, 2023.” To the left of each bento was a shoyu packet. Placed on top of the bento was the program, which consisted of a meet and greet, pictures with the birthday queen, and provided memory sheets; dinner, a program provided by the Grateful Crane, following dessert.

BWA members helped set up the inari and maki sushi, mixing wasabi and shoyu on the social hall's front table. Others made hot water for tea as guests, and some of The Grateful Crane production crew came in and played the piano beautifully in the Hondo, which you could hear from the social hall. 

Once guests arrived, the social hall was buzzing, and everyone was happily chatting about and catching up with friends we hadn’t seen since the pandemic. Seeing the social hall filled up as much as it had that evening was uncommon. The food was delicious, and the company was delightful. While we were eating, BWA members, Soji and Hiroshi Jr. came around with the platter full of sushi and hot tea, always ensuring none of our cups went dry. It was quite the service, if I may say so myself. 

After eating, we were instructed to go into the Hondo for a small program provided by The Grateful Crane. About six members sang songs, some accompanied by piano; some were acapella. Some of the songs were sung in Japanese, including Kyu Sakamoto’s “Sukiyaki,” which the cast encouraged the audience to sing along with because most people know this song by heart. The music was captivating, stunning, and heartwarming; definitely, a birthday party to remember. 

After the musical program, we all took a group photo of everyone sitting in the pews. Afterward, we returned to the Social Hall, where the famous Yasukochi’s Coffee Crunch Cake was served with flan. 

Sadako’s favorite treats were inside the cardboard box: two manju from Sacramento, two mini Reese’s peanut butter cups, and dark chocolate. I think I heard Soji saying that one of them was Hiroshi, her late husband’s favorite, but I missed it. Overall, I think it was a favorite of both of them combined, which filled my heart because it was a nice reminder of Hiroshi, whom we also miss dearly. 

I’m so grateful I could spend this evening with Sadako and create more memories. Sadako is a wonderful lady who is so loved by the BCSF community. When I first started coming to this temple seven years ago, she was one of the few that was nice enough to say ‘hi’ to me. In fact, my earliest memory of her was her cleaning up the kitchen, putting away the leftover manju, and packing it in the box they came in. She gave me the box as I was sitting down and said, “Here, take this home.” I left the box at the temple because it was a lot of manju, and I figured someone else would’ve wanted it. I was touched that she didn’t know me and decided to give me the leftovers. 

Happiest Birthday to Sadako! I appreciate your friendship and all that you did for BCSF and beyond. Cheers to many more birthdays!

Guys, I know this isn’t Arashi related, but I’m watching V6′s 20th anniversary concert and Sakamoto’s voice is just so good??? Like, holy cow my ears have been blessed. V6 was the first Johnny’s group I ever heard when they sang Change the World for Inuyasha, and I haven’t listened to them in a long time, but this concert reminded me that Sakamoto is honestly my favorite singer in all of Johnny’s.

Edit: Also whoever choreographs for V6 should do some numbers for Arashi.

"Heh, you'd probably get along well with my friend then - she loves all things sweet like cakes - but crepes are probably her favorite of all," He gives a fond smile at the memory of his good friend as he gingerly takes the coffee from her along with the treat.

Taking a second to take a bite from the delicious treat, out of curiosity, he's surprised to be greeted with a sweetness in his mouth - sweet but also delicious as well, a flavor he can't quite articulate but makes him want to go for another bite and then another one after that, though he forces himself to chew what's in his mouth for now. "This is really good," He manages, after swallowing the last of what's still in his mouth. "If your other sweets are half as amazing as this, I'm happy to stay and help!"

The temptation to go for another bite is immediate, though he settles for a sip from the cup of coffee instead, which is also sweet and warms him down to his stomach.

"Three is like a lucky number then, huh...? Interesting how there seems to be different 'lucky' and 'unlucky' numbers out there," He had always felt a bit of discomfort about the number 'four', for instead, as had many - having often been told and heard what an unlucky number it was. He'd never heard anything about 'three' so it must have been lucky in her culture! "So you grind up the actual little leaves then?" He tried to picture this in his mind, though he didn't have quite the imagination for baking that she did. "I may not know what clovers taste like, but what I can say is - that...!" He gives a vigorous point to the half eaten pastry in question. "...Is amazing!"

Truly now he really would have to tell the others about this place, he had the sense that Ann especially - the sweet toothed friend he had mentioned just moments ago - would particularly love the sweets here!

"Heh, well I'm happy to help out and test your sweets!" He gives a cheerful chuckle as he moves to take another bite from the Irish Lace, his face quickly becoming one of utmost content as he chews, savoring each bite, until finally swallowing what's left in his mouth, now only a small part of the treat remaining. "That's nice of you to let me help out free of charge!" Truly a generous offer, as well. "If I can ever help you with anything like clean up in exchange then I'm happy to contribute, no matter how big or small," Was the least he could do for her in exchange!

"Deis...tin...each...?" He repeats the name slowly, making a mental note for later to practice saying her name so that it feels more natural on his tongue and that he can say it without embarrassing himself. "It's nice to meet you! My name's Ryuji - Ryuji Sakamoto! I'm a second year at the high school Shujin," He smiles, running a hand through his hair as curiosity overtakes him.

The smell of brewing coffee and freshly baked pastries flooded the Aoyama-Itchome area, bringing in customers near the train station. Many of the customers at this point of the day were from Shujin Academy. The smooth jazz that played in the background was almost a complement to the chatter of customers relaxing with their drinks and the sound of the coffee-making process

Deistineach handed the last drink of her afternoon rush over the counter, with a pleasant smile before grabbing a clean towel to get things back in shape before the next customers inevitably came in. The redhead had been working at the coffee shop for a couple years now. Learning the ins and outs of the trade and adding her own flair when possible. She cleared off the chalkboard sign at the counter to rewrite her special pastries to include the batch of caramel marshmallow cookies that were about to come out of the oven.

Dei gave a nod of satisfaction after rereading her handiwork. It was an experimental treat, but easy enough to toss together for something completely different than what was normally in Japan. Even having lived in the country for some time now, the Irish woman still didn't completely assimilate. It was rather easy to tell she was a foreigner. Whether it be from the deep red curls she had braided down her back or the mismatched eyes that certainly didn't fit in with the majority of people here having shades of black or brown. On the other hand, being a foreigner working in a public service job in Japan seemed to bringing its own set of customers.

As the little bell on the door jingled to indicate a new arrival, Dei raised a hand in acknowledgment. "Fáilte, Dia duit! I'll be right with you!" She called over her shoulder as she grabbed her oven mitts. The timer on the cookies had just chirped and it would only take a moment to shift them to a cooling rack.

Gintoki:

he is not able to afford a ring to save his life even if he tries, somehow the money is always needed somewhere else (dog food, food for the kids, Pachinko)

he is also not good with openly talking about his feelings, especially those that make him feel vulnerable

but he really tries his best; he makes sure the kids are spending the night somewhere else and surprises you with a romantic (at least for his standards) date at home

there is a strawberry cake, and he has so many things he wants to tell you but when the time comes, he gets too nervous to bring out a proper sentence

instead, he turns his blushing face away from you, takes a (cheap) ring out of his pocket and murmurs something about marriage and raising the two brats together

of course, the wedding will be a small one because who would be able to afford expensive shit like this?

Otose will gift you an expensive bottle of alcohol

Katsura:

Katsura behaves really weird as soon as he decides to propose to you

he has super-secret meetings with Elizabeth and his fellow terrorists colleagues

he's going out at suspicious times without telling you where he goes or how long he'll be gone

you would suspect him of having an affair if he wouldn't be so plain obvious about sneaking out and staying away for some time

all this secrecy was only to prepare a cute proposal at your favourite restaurant and a big surprise party afterwards

Katsura put so much effort in it only to have everything ruined by Gintoki who accidentally spoilers you just a few hours before you would meet Katsura at the restaurant

you pretend to not know a thing but at the end of the party you tell Katsura that you knew what was about to happen and Katsura genuinely tries to murder Gintoki

the wedding will be a rather small one but with everyone who is dear to you and the dress you fell in love with on first sight

Takasugi:

Takasugi is not a fan of big or public proposals and therefore won’t make a big fuss over it

he asks you to come to his room later but doesn’t tell you why

you do as he asked you to and find him in his (quite dark) room staring absentmindedly outside of the window

when you step closer to him, and he notices your presence he turns around to you, takes your hand in his and places something small in your hand

when you look at your palm you see a pretty ring

“You don’t need to wear it if you don’t want to”, is the only thing Takasugi says

there is probably never the right time for an actual ceremony but at least for him it’s not so important; the gesture is what matters for him

but if you tell him that you desperately want a ceremony, he might organise something small and quick

Sakamoto:

you notice that Tatsuma behaves weird for some reason, he seems quite nervous and when you ask him if something is bothering him, he just laughs loudly and refuses to answer your question

sometime later he proposes on his knee holding an expensive looking ring and asking you if you want to marry him with a lot of Kaientai members around

the few seconds you need to realise what is going on and answer his question feel like an eternity to him but when you finally say the magic word, he lifts you up in joy

the whole Kaientai was informed beforehand and have prepared a huge party

Tatsuma ends up totally wasted (he was so nervous before the proposal he couldn’t help himself but to chuck down some drinks afterwards) so you have to take care of your fiancé

the wedding will be just as big with a lot of food and drinks; Tatsuma makes sure there is everything you wish for
