Okay I know I’ve been real silent in the fandom lately (can you blame me?) and I’m probably not coming back until Gosho do something about the main plot, but I just randomly remembered this scene:

I just— can you imagine how Heiji was feeling? Other detectives were questioning his method, basically calling him out on his character the same way his own father did ( I think Heizo did mentioned he’s too hot-headed).
Thus, in this situation he asked Shinichi, his bestfriend — and probably his idol too in detective work — if he was the wrong one. And Shinichi, Shinichi, he’s just so good to Heiji. He had never doubted him, there was no hesitation in his answer. He did not offer Heiji comfort, and did not even defend him, but when Heiji asked, he answered with confidence and with that smirk. (I love that smirk it’s basically him saying he’s right).
I did wonder why Shinichi did not defend him earlier. However, even if he did, what good will that do? Hakuba was set in his own way, Shinichi was stuck in a body of a child, and I wonder if he did not bother at all because he did not think Heiji needs it? Just like Hakuba was set in his own method, so was Heiji. He is hot-headed yeah but it never was to the point where he endanger someone’s life or disrupt the crime scene. We all know he’s a good detective, Shinichi knows it, and Heiji knows it too.
I just love how Shinichi’s confidence in him probably assured Heiji a little bit (or a LOT, that’s his bro there). There was never any “I do agree with you but I guess you could have done it differently…” etc. Heiji asked if what he did was wrong and Shinichi smirked his all-knowing-smirk and said “Nope, not at all.” . That’s like the best assurance you can hear from the bro you look up to. Oh and let’s be real if Hakuba saw how Shinichi conduct his own investigation he would be frothing at the mouth too.
In conclusion, this scene is so OLD yet it suddenly hit me with feels and I love this two so much I just had to share my thoughts on it XD.
#Hattori Heiji#Kudou Shinichi#wow it’s been a while since I’ve talked about this two that I started to call Conan Shinichi again#that’s what I used to do when I first started reading the manga#but then Conan start to feel like his own person so I call him Conan#but now I don’t care anymore he’s Shinichi and I want my boy back!#Detective Conan#dcmk#Detective Koshien case#sorry for grammar mistake it’s been a while

The Roulette of Destiny part 8 (K+)
A/N: Okay, there is a chapter where things happen (yeah, trying not to spoil too much), so I decided to put some age limit to this and to the next chapter. I'm not sure if this is really necessary since creating a Tumblr account you have to be 13 and I think there is nothing too brutal, but then again, there are many opinions of this and some people are more sensitive than others, and I want to try respect everyone. Better safe than sorry, right? :)
So I used FanFiction.net ratings, and after thinking about this too long (yeah, I'm not very good at these kinds of decisions D: ), I thought that K+ is suitable for this. Of course, if someone thinks that it should be higher, feel free to tell me and I can change it :)
Also thank you for all the comments, likes, and shares ❤ I would love to tell you again how much it means to me, but maybe instead I let you read what is going on in that shopping mall ;)
Chapter 1 ~ Chapter 2 ~ Chapter 3 ~ Chapter 4 ~ Chapter 5 ~ Chapter 6 ~ Chapter 7
Chapter 8
Ran took a deep breath to calm herself down and listened to how they informed everyone that there was a bomb attack. Instructions she couldn’t hear because after that there started to be screaming and panicking everywhere. Before she knew it, people were running towards the staircase. Ran acted fast and moved besides, letting people go. She knew that she should leave too. She should hurry and make her way outside, but she also knew that panicking wouldn’t solve anything. And Heiji and Kazuha could probably be there somewhere… And Shinichi…
Ran turned to go back where she came, but her way stopped fast when she saw some people falling. She hurried to them and helped them up since it seemed that many people were more worried about themselves than others. She made some of them stop, just to make sure that children, seniors, or those who had hurt themselves, would get someone to help them out.
“I don’t have time for this, I don’t even know him”, the young woman shouted angrily when Ran stopped her to help an old man. She tried to leave, but Ran grabbed her arm, making her stop.
“It doesn’t matter if you don’t know each other”, she screamed to her angrily. “We are all in the same situation! You’re not going to get out there any faster.”
“I would be faster without that old man hanging on me…”
“It’s okay, young miss”, the old man interrupted. “I can get out of my own…”
“So, you want to take that on your conscience when you learn that someone who you could have helped just didn’t make it?”
The woman opened her mouth but shut it. Ran stared at her determined. She couldn’t understand how some people could be so selfish that they didn’t care about anyone else than themselves. And a time like this? They should try to escape together, not leave anyone behind! Of course, she understood that it was scary to know that somewhere in the building could be more bombs that could explode anytime, but would it be a big job just to make sure that as many as possible could make it? And Ran knew that she would never forgive herself if she would have seen someone who would have needed her help and she would have just left that person behind.
“Fine!”, woman snarled and turned to the old man. “Come on, I make sure that you can make it.”
The old man smiled and looked at Ran. “Thank you, miss.”
Ran smiled. “Just making sure that we all can escape from here”, she answered, and as soon as the man get to hold on the woman's arm, Ran turned and looked around. There weren’t many people anymore, yet there was a woman who looked around and shouted.
“Akira? Akira, where are you?”
“Is someone lost?” Ran asked when came closer to the woman. She looked at her with a worried look.
“Yeah, my son, Akira… I… I lost him when we were escaping and now, I can’t find him anywhere…” Then she started to look around again. Ran looked also, trying to find a boy with her gaze. “I… I need to find him, I… But…”
“Wait on the staircase, okay?” She smiled assuredly. “If he comes, leave with him. I’m going to search him…”
“But… But… How about you? If… If he comes back without seeing you…”
“I give you my phone number”, Ran said. “Then, if your son hadn’t met me, you can give me a call and I know that he had been found. Okay?”
The woman smiled and took out her phone. After giving her number to a woman Ran left to search for a boy. Every store was empty at that point, which just made it easy to Ran just check them fast, but boy wasn’t anywhere to be found.
Not until she heard some shouting.
She ran back to the corridor and saw a boy running towards her in a panic. She wondered why until she saw a few men coming out behind the corner. They shouted after the boy and when they saw Ran, they started to shout at her too. They got masks on their faces and hoods over their heads and black clothes. They really had made sure to look like criminals.
“Take her down!”
“Heeeelp! Help!”
Ran calmed herself. She took a deep breath before she took running steps towards bad guys. She ran beside the boy, met those criminals, and before they got a chance to say or do anything, Ran kicked and punched them down. It didn’t take long for to them fall on the floor, and after a few seconds, Ran was sure that those two wouldn’t brother that boy or anyone else anymore.
She turned to look behind her. The boy stood there, looking at those two criminals before meeting her gaze. He looked like he had seen a ghost.
“Are you okay?” Ran asked and went closer to the boy. “Are you Akira?”
The boy looked at her. “I… yeah, I am…”
Ran smiled at him gently. “Your mother is searching for you. She is waiting for you on the staircase close to the…”
“What’s going on?”
Ran turned around. Around the corner came out a few more characters in dark clothes and hiding faces.
“Stop them!”
“Go to the staircase, your mom is waiting!” Ran said to the boy and turned to push that boy to the move. “I'll distract them!”
She turned around and met those two. Another one stopped while the other came towards her. Again, Ran made a few kicks and punches before the person collapsed on the floor. She raised her gaze to another one who got something on their hand.
“There is someone who can fight. I need a backup, now!”
Ran took her chance while the one was talking to someone else. She ran towards that person. Woman – at least she sounded like a woman – let out a scream and backed off. There was some shouting from the walkie-talkie, but Ran didn’t hear it since she was too concentrated on taking that woman down. She chased her around the corner, but then she stopped. A few shootings welcomed her. She evaded them barely.
“Take her down!”
God! Ran wanted to go and kick them down. For her, they looked like criminals and they were ready to get rid of her, so it was more than enough for her to make sure that they would stay down and not hurt anyone else. But there were many of them. Four with a gun. Even though Ran was pretty confident of her karate skills, she wasn’t sure if she could take all four down since they were all armed.
Maybe this is a good time to back off, she thought and turned around starting to run. Her only mission was to make sure that everyone would be safe, and that boy would get back to her mother.
She tried to navigate back to the stairs where she left that woman, but then she realised that if that boy wouldn’t be back to her yet, she would only make that family in danger. In the end, the boy would be a witness. Well, now Ran would be too. But since Ran was an adult, she believed that the criminals would like to get rid of her more likely. It would be much easier to sabotage a child's testimony than an adult's.
So she turned in the restaurant which happened to be behind the corner. She ran between tables to the kitchen doors and mashed herself through them. There was dark, it seemed that the staff was calm enough to take power off from the kitchen, but there was still food on the stove and on the cut boards, and some plates where they had started to make servings to their customers. Ran felt bad for everyone at this point, but she didn’t have time to worry about it, since from the restaurant side she heard shouting. Ran saw pair of doors on the end of the kitchen. She ran there. It was an elevator. She hit the button and slipped inside when the doors opened.
“There she is!”
Ran felt panic seeing how the first of them get in the kitchen. Gun pointed at her and Ran hit the button to get doors shutting faster. There was a shot and with instinct Ran moved other side of the elevator. Someone cursed and Ran heard movements, commands to get her. She wasn’t sure if she was just a lucky one, but the doors shut just in front of her and started to move on lower levels.
Ran sighed in relief. Her heart was bouncing. God, when they talked about coming to Osaka, she never dreamed that she would find herself in this kind of situation. It wasn’t like she even wanted to get in a situation like this, but still, these were things that happened only in action movies, not in real life.
She wondered where Shinichi, Kazuha, and Heiji were. She hoped they were all alright.
Well, probably everyone else than she was alright. Probably all customers had got outside at this point, in somewhere safe, and at this point, police forces would try to calm down the criminals who were behind this attack. She wondered though what they were after. Why did they bother to attack in here, right now, middle of the day? Ran kind of would understand the bank since they would get much money from there. Well, she didn’t say that there wasn’t money at all, but the bank would be much easier to rob than going through many shops in the mall.
Maybe there was something personal behind this. Maybe…
Elevator stopped. Ran swung and took support from the wall. Then she looked around. The elevator didn’t move, yet the doors didn't open either.
Did they get some panel where they could stop elevators? Or it also could be her bad luck, and the elevator had broken down just now. She went to the panel and tried to hit buttons, but the elevator didn’t move. Really, was she stuck on the elevator now? Easy catch for the criminals. Her only hope was a button that had the sign of opening doors. Maybe…
The doors opened. Elevator had stopped halfway through the one doorway. Ran didn’t know which floor it was, but it would be better than staying here. She only needed to hope that the elevator wouldn’t start to move before she get out from there.
She got out and saw the backroom where were boxes, a rack with clothes, and a table with a computer. There were many papers, files and what else on the shelves. She went to the door she saw and opened it carefully. Yeah, clothes shop. There was music on, but there was no one.
Ran looked behind her. She knew that she couldn’t stay here for long, because she was still kind of sure that criminals were the reason why the elevator stopped moving, and if that was the case, they probably could figure out where it stopped. And they probably would come here to get rid of her. She really needed to move on, but where? If they really controlled elevators, they probably have also access to everything else, and if they were clever, they had locked all the doors. No one would want to police to come inside. Yet it didn’t change the fact that Ran still wanted out. How would she do that? Go to the first floor, broke the window, and escape through it?
Or maybe she could try through the parking garage. Of course, Ran had no idea how many criminals there would be, but she was pretty sure that the parking hall would be big enough that she could just sneak her way through.
Ran went to the hall and looked around. Elevator or stairs? Stairs would be easier since no one could stop her from moving, but it would be a problem if criminals were patrolling stairs. Of course, Ran was pretty sure that maybe she could surprise them and took them down, but if there are more with guns? The elevator would be nicer since she could get in and be alone there, but then again, if they really got access to stop it whenever they wanted? Or if there were bad guys waiting for her when the doors open?
She wondered where all the cameras were. She was pretty sure that in staircases were some, and if there were bad guys looking at those monitors, it would be a big probability that they could coordinate themselves and be somewhere waiting for Ran. Other hand the elevators… She wasn’t sure if there were cameras inside elevators, but outside… If cameras were only outside, then they could only see how she enter, but they would have no idea on which floor she would aim. Or could they see it from somewhere?
She took her chance and went to the next elevator she saw. Doors opened and she went inside fast, taking the lowest floor she could. And she waited. She looked at how numbers above the number plate changed, and she waited that the elevator would stop. It didn’t. She felt anxious. Well, it didn’t mean that there wouldn’t be a welcoming committee when those doors would open.
When she got to her destination, she glued herself on the corner as well as she could. Doors started to open, and she waited to hear some shouting and gunfire, but after a few seconds, there were none. Ran glances carefully outside and saw no one. Ran frowned. This was too easy.
She stepped outside and looked around. It was a hall and there were sliding doors that would take her to the parking hall. She went closer, but the doors didn't open. Ran wanted to curse herself. What else did she wait to happen? That they would let every door open and let everyone who was still inside, destroy their plan? Ran doubted that.
She looked around wondering what to do now. She started to move around just making sure that no one would catch her in there. Did she really need to go and break some windows to get out? At that point, it probably was her only choice. She didn’t believe that she could climb down on walls to get out, and she would only kill herself if she would just jump. One choice would be to find a rope from some shop or make one, and with that climb down, but then she should make sure that it would be a place where no one would come and sever that rope before she got down.
Right now, the first floor’s window would be her best chance.
She opened the dark grey door and went inside. It looked like a place that was only meant to staff members. She looked at the stairs. Well, at this point it wouldn’t matter if she would take a stair and look around. It didn’t even look like anyone was following her. Maybe she got rid of them? Though there were still cameras, but…
She got up those stairs with caution. Before the first platform, there was a door that was slightly open. Ran sneaked towards it. If she would be silent enough, maybe they wouldn't hear her moving.
“Why can’t they get rid of him?”
Ran hit her hands on her mouth to stop any surprising sounds she was ready to let out. Her heart bounced as she stayed still beside that door. God, did they see her? Did they…
“I don’t know”, someone else answered more calmly, yet the person sounded angry. “If this continued like this, that detective has shot all the cameras and we can’t follow him anymore.”
Detective? Ran felt the air freeze around her. Shinichi?
“I don’t care!” the first voice, which sounded like a woman’s voice, shouted. “He is just a one-man! It shouldn’t be too hard to get rid of him. WHY CAN’T OUR MEN SHOOT HIM?!”
Ran took a deep breath as quietly as she could before she crouched and peeked inside. In that room, there were so many monitors hanging from the wall. Some of them showed that they didn’t have a signal. Probably those broken ones that they mentioned. There were also two members, another one was sitting in front of monitors and the other stood beside the other one. Both of them were looking at the monitors. There didn't seem to be others.
If she could take them by surprise, she could take them down. She would take that standing one first, so the other one would stand up before doing anything, and that way Ran would get more time to strike to that guy.
Wait, was she really going to do it?
Ran glanced around her. The easiest way would be just to sneak outside and leave. They hadn’t seen her yet, and since they were more concentrated on that detective…
That detective could be Shinichi.
She didn’t know why he would still be there, but Ran really should do something if it was him. It seemed that he knew what he was doing, but still, if they got better of him…
Carefully she opened the door more to sneak silently inside.
The one who stood raised a hand. Ran heard a rustling noise. “He is going towards the sushi bar”, a woman’s voice shouted and sounded very angry. “Get him in there, understood?”
There was a crack, then there was a neat answer: Yes. Ran looked at how the woman lowered her hand. Probably now would be a good time. She stood up behind the woman and as fast as she could, she hit her on her head. The woman let a surprised scream and didn’t have time to even move when Ran kicked her legs, making her fall. Then she turned to another one who had just stood up, ready to take her out. Ran evaded his right hood, starting to hit him on his stomach before giving him a kick. He fell to the floor. For a moment Ran waited that one of them would stand up, but nothing happened. Both of them were out from the game. At least for a moment.
She turned towards the monitors. She looked at them all, trying to find that one person who was giving a hard time to those criminals. That detective… Where was he?
There! She saw from one of them how someone came to the screen. He stopped and looked the way he came before raising something – a gun – towards the camera and shot. Then there was the text: No signal.
It was Shinichi. Ran was sure of that. She would recognise him anywhere.
She sighed, and she wasn’t sure if she was relieved or worried. She was happy that he was okay, but she was also worried. Why in the Earth he was in there, running around? Why didn’t he leave with other customers?
Then again, why did she was still here? Yeah, because she wanted to make sure that everyone would get safe. Maybe that same happened to him. He wanted to make sure that someone would get away and then he got across with criminals… like Ran.
She needed to find him. If she would find him, maybe then they could find a way to get out of here.
Ran let her eyes run through the monitors, trying to see where he would appear next, but then she saw monitors which show the mall’s lobby and the reality hit her hard.
The lobby was full of people. Those, who didn’t get away? She could only guess. Did the criminals shut the doors before everyone could escape? Why? And why those people didn’t move? Ran tried to see from those monitors where the bad guys were, but she didn’t. Maybe they had planned their places to guard victims in there where cameras couldn’t catch them? It would also explain why anyone didn’t move or plan to do anything to escape.
But there were so many people… Ran didn’t believe that there would be that many criminals that those people couldn’t take them down. It would be easy.
A different story would be if the criminals had guns. If victims wouldn’t act at the same time to take all those criminals down, some of them could shoot someone, and it wasn’t an option. But there was no way how they could plan to attack at the same time without criminals noticing that something was going on.
If she only could help them…
The rasping sound woke her from her thoughts. “To control room, he is running towards staff’s staircase!” Voice shouted from the walkie-talkie. “Shut that door so we can stop him!”
Ran raised her gaze back to the monitors. It was fourth floors monitors where she had seen Shinichi last time, so it was only natural to try to see him there. Where are you, Shinichi?
Then she saw him. On one monitor, the door opened and someone shut it. Then he looked at the camera.
Ran looked down to see all those bottoms and switches. God, if she could just lock the door behind him, he could get away… But there were so many choices, how could she…
There was a button where read “staff doors”. Ran just pressed it, not sure what it would mean. Then she looked at the monitor again. Shinichi was pointing a gun towards the camera. Then he glanced at the door.
“Control room! Open the door, fast! We lost him otherwise!”
Ran glanced at the walkie-talkie, then the monitor again. He was still standing there. “Shinichi, run!” she whispered. Why didn’t he move? Now would be his chance! God, run now!
“Control room?! Control room! Is there anyone, answer me!”
Run!
Then he looked back to the camera. For a moment Ran stared into his eyes, trying to send him a telepathic message that he should move on before he lowered the gun and left.
Ran sighed. She was so relieved.
“Control room! Someone, answer us! What happens in the control room? Why don’t they answer?”
Ran looked at criminals who she took down earlier and then the walkie-talkie. She wanted to answer and tell them that everything was alright, but they probably would recognise that it wasn’t the right voice who answered. They would come after her as soon as possible. Actually, now that Ran thought about it, they probably were after her already. At least someone had heard those shouts from their walkie-talkie and probably decided to go check what was going on.
Well, it was her time to leave. As much as there would be a good chance that she could have done something from here to help, she didn’t know what to do or how would be the wisest way to do this without getting anyone hurt. Maybe she could find Shinichi and they could plan something together.
She left the room.
“There she is!” someone shouted. Ran looked on the stairs and saw two criminals coming from downstairs. Another one got a walkie-talkie on their hand. “That woman, she came out from control-“
Ran acted and kicked this talker out. Part of her knew that it was too late for that since they already knew her location. Then she turned to another one who pointed at her with a gun, but all that get out of it was just the sound of “click-click”. Criminal looked very confused and Ran took that moment to kick them out too. She wondered how that weapon could be empty in a moment like this, but at the same time, she knew that this was her moment to run, so she oriented her way to the second floor.
She opened the door and met three criminals on there, their backs on her. They looked like they were discussing something, and as much as Ran wanted to let them be, she knew that they would get on her back later. She decided to surprise them and took them down.
“Sorry”, she whispered after they lay down, and started to run again. She checked on every corner that her way was clear and tried to be careful with shops. She couldn’t get caught, not before she could find Shinichi. But how on earth she could find him anyway?
Ran stopped in the open area. There was no one to be seen, but it didn’t mean she should stay there too long. She looked around her, trying to figure out how she could catch him. Shinichi was probably long gone and the chance that she would stumble upon him was pretty low. In a situation like this, the high possibility to survive was to stay on the move.
Ran still got her phone. She didn’t have his number – fun thing, and only this morning she thought how irresponsible from them not to give each other their numbers -, but if he really was a known detective, he probably had some kind of website or another way to get his number… If she could find it, she could call him…
She took the phone from her bag and opened it.
“Don’t think about it.”

disappearing trick — SaguKai
━━━━━━━
fandom | magic kaito
pairing | kuroba kaito x hakuba saguru
genre | angst to fluff :3
w.c | 2.1k
━━━━━━━
It was a heist went wrong.
So, so wrong.
There were explosions and gunshots, all of which Hakuba was about 99.99% sure wasn’t in KID’s itinerary of the night. He remembered catching a glimpse of a torn white cape, the grimace of pain clear as day despite the lack of helicopters overhead, and men dressed in black.
“KID—!” Hakuba had yelled, which, looking back, was not the smartest thing he could’ve done. The barrels of two guns instantaneously locked on him, much to the phantom thief’s horror.
It seemed like it was the end for Hakuba Saguru.
But of course, KID always loved to meddle in things that didn’t involve him. And so he did what he always did best.
KID was a performer, after all. He specialised in attracting his audience’s attention to him. Flashing a cocky smirk towards Hakuba’s direction, even though there was a stream of blood trickling down his cheek, the phantom thief disappeared into the night with a loud bang, taking the two men with him.
Kuroba Kaito was ‘kidnapped’ the same night.
According to Aoko, who had been in the Nakamouri house when the teen was attacked, there had been a loud crash, gunshots, and yelling. The girl had hid under the kitchen counter in fright, hoping and praying with all her heart that Kaito hadn’t been home at the time of the break-in.
As it turned out, he was.
The crime scene investigators turned Kuroba’s house upside down, finding multiple signs that the teen boy had been shot, if the splatters of blood (That all had Kaito’s DNA) was any indication. It was also concluded by the investigators that Kaito put up a hell of a fight, as there were signs of his magic tricks all through the house.
Hakuba was still being treated for shock at the heist location when Detective Nakamouri received a call from his devastated, hysterical daughter, who sobbed so loudly through the phone that the blonde detective overheard.
It was only one disaster after another.
For once, Hakuba chose to stay out of the crime scene, instead stroking Aoko’s back as comfortingly as he could, trying not to think about Kaito’s body, abandoned in some dark alley dumpster. His coat was soaked through with splotches of her tears, but he didn’t care much, because he himself felt like crying, too.
━━━━━━━
School the next day was eerily quiet. Practically everyone had heard of Kaito’s kidnapping, and if they didn’t, Aoko’s swollen eyes were a dead giveaway that something had happened to the playful teen. The teacher kept glancing up, as if she was waiting for an interruption, only to flick her eyes onto the empty seat at the corner of the classroom. The topic lingered like a dark cloud above the classroom, and no one dared to even mention the name ‘Kaito’ when Aoko was within hearing distance.
“He’s alive.”
Hakuba glanced up after a few moments of silence, realising that Akako was talking to him. “What?”
“Kuroba.” Akako continued impatiently. “He’s alive.”
The blonde detective couldn’t help but snort. “And how did you come to that conclusion? Did your crystal ball tell you that?”
Judging by the glare the female shot in his direction, she didn’t appreciate his snark, but Hakuba just couldn’t be bothered at the moment. “He won’t go down this easily.” Akako stated, as if she’d seen Kaito alive with her own two eyes. Granted, the image hadn’t exactly been clear when she used her seer powers on him, but she could go as far as saying that the magician was still breathing.
“Look. He was shot.” Hakuba interrupted emotionlessly. “Even if the gunshot wasn’t fatal, he’s lost a lot of blood.”
“He won’t go out that easily. You’ll see.”
━━━━━━━
Kuroba Kaito was pronounced dead after three months. KID went back into retirement— At least, that’s what the KID division announced after no sight of any heist in the horizon.
After a long consideration, Hakuba decided to leave Japan behind— Along with the memories of KID and Kaito— And return to Britain. Some would call him cowardly, and he would admit, yes, it was cowardly of him to run away like that, but as far as he was concerned, he didn’t care what others thought of him.
Sure, Aoko was a little upset, but Akako had reassured her that she wasn’t going anywhere. He did feel a little bad for leaving Nakamouri behind— All her friends were disappearing, one by one, after all—
Disappearing.
That was KID’s— Kaito’s last trick, Hakuba thought tearily, hastily ushering the tears away as he packed the last of his clothes into the luggage bag. A disappearing trick gone wrong— And the phantom thief KID, Kuroba Kaito— Two sides of the same coin— Dropped off the surface of the planet, never to be heard from again.
But there was no point in crying over spilled milk anymore.
“Saguru-kun, there’s a man looking for you outside.” His housekeeper knocked on the door, informing him monotonously. “He said he has a few things to tell you before you leave Japan.”
A quick peer out of the window gave him a glimpse of dark brown hair— A familiar stature and height, a relaxed pose—
Hakuba had never dashed out of his room that fast in his entire life. All composure and calamity was forgotten as he practically barrelled down the stairs, narrowly missing a few boxes of belongings he had wrapped up the days prior. The door burst open with a tremendous bang! as Hakuba hurried down the front steps of his house, hoping, praying, pleading that the face that he would meet belonged to—
“Kudou-kun?” The tone of disappointment couldn’t be avoided as Hakuba remembered just how alike the detective and the magician looked. If he was asked, the two were definitely genetically related at some degree or another. “How may I help you today?” His tone was terribly strained; he had had expectations, and he had been let down.
Kudou Shinichi, as the great detective that rivalled many others, took quick note of Hakuba’s inner turmoil. “Hakuba-kun. I have news that you might want to... Think about before you leave Japan.”
“Go on.” Hakuba said bitterly. Nothing could stop him from leaving Japan, he thought. Not when every corner reminded him of the man that kept him on his feet.
“Kuroba Kaito is very much alive.” Kudou said casually, with no prior preparation or whatsoever. Hakuba looked as if he was just hit by a freight train, stunned and dazed by the words that destroyed everything he knew about life. “He’s been staying undercover to help the FBI take down the Black Organisation, who, as if seems, was after Pandora as well. Because he’s been missing for three months, its’ going to be very hard for him to explain his absence— So he has requested for me to pass you this letter in his stead.”
The thoughts running through Saguru’s head as the slim letter was received into his head were wild. Kaito was alive? He was involved with the FBI? What was the Black Organisation— And forget the Black Organisation, what the hell was Pandora? And why couldn’t Kaito have passed him the letter himself?
“Well, I’m going to get going.” Kudou smiled gently. “See you around, Hakuba-kun.”
━━━━━━━
It seems like your detective skills have mellowed since my absence, Hakubastard. Your observational ability is... Mediocre, to say the least. Anyway, I suppose I should provide you with an explanation (Although I would love to go world-hopping and leave you in pursuit of the truth for the rest of your life), but I guess I owe you this much after just upping and leaving like that. Those gun wounds hurt like hell, but they weren’t going to nuff this magician up that easily. I still had a couple tricks up my sleeve— It was nice seeing you all worried about me, though! So you do care~
Anyway, its still not too safe for me to appear publicly in Japan. I’ve sent a letter to Aoko, so don’t worry about filling her in. I left the meeting location in your bedroom. Exactly a month from now. Better set a reminder on that pocket watch of yours, tantei.
With love malice,
Kuroba Kaito
“My bedroom...?” Hakuba murmured to himself, realisation striking like a flash of lightning. A quick inspection of his room turned out with a slip of yellow paper: Rivals shall meet once more, in the romantic city people adore; When the clock strikes a quarter and by the Seine shop corner.
Saguru rushed over to his bedroom window, eyes flicking up and down the nearby streets to find Kudou Shinichi’s silhouette, but he came up empty handed— For that wasn’t Kudou Shinichi at all... Because who else would break into his bedroom just to leave a riddle?
It didn’t take long for Hakuba to figure out the time, date, and location— Kudou— No, Kaito had said so himself. Exactly a month from then— In the ‘romantic city people adore’— Which would be Paris— ‘clock strikes a quarter’— At a quarter of a day, which would be 6am— And by the ‘Seine shop corner’— So at a coffee shop next to River Seine.
“Baa-san!” Saguru called out into the manor, a smile on his face. “Cancel my flight ticket and book one to Paris instead.”
━━━━━━━
Paris at 6am was quite the pretty sight. The sun was barely rising over the horizon, little splays of light shimmying over the river surface, bathing Paris in a fine, gold threads of sunshine. Not that many cafes were open at the crack of dawn, which made it even easier for Saguru to track down his cafe.
The little coffee shop by the Seine provided an amazing view as Saguru enjoyed his morning coffee. He had taken a seat outside the cafe, the streets silent in a peaceful, docile manner, early birds already leaving their nests for the worms that were promised.
The latte in his hands felt warm, inducing heat into his frozen fingers. Hakuba had never felt that on edge in his entire life— Would Kaito show up?
“Lovely morning, no?” An old man commented, plopping into the seat opposite Saguru. “I love watching the sunrise from here.”
Hakuba raised an eyebrow, looking for details of a disguise. The fat seemed genuine— The voice was deep and velvety, a little rough and raspy around the edges— The wrinkles around the eyes looked authentic— But he had seen the quality of KID’s work, and he wasn’t taking his chances.
“Indeed,” Saguru agreed with a pleasant hum, French rolling off his tongue smoothly. “Say, mister, what do you think about magic tricks?”
“Ah, I think they’re quite quaint.” The old man replied in his deep voice, eyes forming crescent lines as he smiled. “What do you think of them, young man?”
Saguru placed his latte back onto the cup. “I think magic tricks are nice,” He started softly, making firm eye contact with the old man, French rolling off his tongue smoothly. “But I hate disappearing tricks the most.”
“Oh?” The old man was confused, clearly missing the memo. “Why so—?”
“Good morning, sir, can I take your order?” A voice pricked into Hakuba’s memory, triggering some sort of mechanism. It was the same tone, frequency, wavelength— The only thing different was the dialect and accent.
Saguru looked up right into Kaito’s violet eyes, the latter dressed in a waiter’s uniform. A soft smile spread over the magician’s lips as he winked, Hakuba’s jaw dropping as his gaze returned to the man in front of him.
“Ah, a cappuccino please. And one slice of carrot cake.”
“Of course.” Kaito nodded pleasantly. “Right away, sir. And you?”
Hakuba took longer to find his voice than he would’ve liked. “Just a cup of black coffee, please.”
“Is that all?” Kaito hummed, scribbling down the orders on a piece of paper.
“Yes, thank you.”
Hakuba laid back against the chair, a sigh slipping from his lips as he smiled continuing his conversation with the old man, who was still very much confused.
“Ah, but I find disappearing tricks interesting,” The old man commented, chuckling slightly. “It’s always so magical when the reappearance happens, no?”
The blonde detective hummed, watching the dark-haired magician busy himself inside the shop. “I suppose I’ll have to agree with that.”

After seeing the fierce resolution of her soul from it's windows, Ai knew that Ran meant every word she said.
She was growing restless. The longer they stay hanging, the sooner they die. She really didn't want to use this but Haibara had no choice.
"Kudo Shinichi..."
Ran froze. The determination in her eyes replaced with confusion and a hint of fragility. It was exactly why she didn't wanna use this method. But it was the only way she can think of for Ran to concede.
After all, it was the same strategy she always used to Kudo whenever he would be reckless. Just a simple mention and utter of Ran's name was enough for him to stop and think things through. Ai wasn't sure if it would work but seeing the look in those indigo, she knew she had a chance.
"Why are you bringing him up?"
Ran tried to sound tough but the firmness was gone. Just a simple mention of his name was enough to lose balance in her emotions.
With an unreadable expression, Haibara looked up.
"He told you to wait for him right?"
Ran didn't like where she's going.
"Wha--How did you--"
"That doesn't matter. He told you to wait for him didn't he? If you don't let me go, the branch your holding onto would snapped or you'd involuntary let go from fatigue. That twig nor you can't handle the weight forever. We'll both fall either way. So, you have to let me go."
"No! Didn't I tell you I won't!?"
"But you'll die."
"I'm prepared for that."
Ran was expecting her to protest of cry, even stay quiet. Instead, Haibara smiled sadly, giving Ran that rare feeling of chill whenever she peers at Conan wearing an uncharacteristic smirk in the middle of a case.
"You are. But Kudo Shinichi isn't."
Ran felt like she couldn't breathe from this little girl's words. She tried to rebuke but nothing came out. Ai continued pressing.
"If you die now, you can't wait for him anymore. What if he comes back one day, then finds out the person he's looking forward to meet the most was dead? Do you think he can forgive you?"
A surge of emotions coursed through Ran from the Ai's heartbreaking question. The little girl was relentless, fully intending her to break. Ran's grip loosened a bit at Ai's arm.
Ai didn't like what she said, but she had to. Ran Mouri was slowly breaking, her resolve weakening. She can feel it. When the teenager's hold considerably slackened, that's when Ai would strike at her arm, causing for her to let go.
"You're right. Shinichi would never forgive me if I died. He'd hate me for not being able to wait for him."
Ran's voice was quiet and soft, that if Ai wasn't directly below her, she wouldn't have heard it. From that, Ai knew she won.
But then, rather than relaxing, the grip hardened even more, fully caging Ai's arm, never intending to let go.
Almost immediately, flabbergasted shaking green met intensely focused violet. Sweat rolling down the side of her angelic face, noce scrunched upwards, brows furrowed, her face screaming earnest expression. The only thing that showed that she was still Ran, the kind, soft Ran that Ai compared to Akemi was the cajoling smile she wore.
"Shinichi may never forgive me if I die, but I'll never be able to forgive myself if I let you go."
Just like that, flashes of a certain memory entered Ai. The last yet strongest time she ever saw her older sister.
-
'Nee-san, don't do anything reckless, please. I can handle myself.'
'No, Shiho. This needs to stop. You've been under them your entire life. You had never experienced going out like normal teenage girl, you never even had a good childhood!'
'But I'm fine, Nee-san. I don't need that. As long as I have you. So please...'
'You're my sister, Shiho. My only family left and as your older sister, I want you to live the best life you could ever have.'
'Nee-san, stop it. If you go through with this, I won't forgive you!'
'...'
'Nee-san...'
'It's fine if you don't forgive me. But if I don't do this, I won't be able to ever forgive myself.'
-
Ai let out a dry laugh as she looked down, completely giving up. It was impossible to win. She couldn't stop Akemi then, why did she think she can stop Ran?
"Why..."
Ran's eyes softened, looking at this broken little girl. Ai was tired, but she had a feeling it wasn't just because of their situation right now. She wanted to offer some kind of comfort, anything to alleviate the young girl's pain. She could only think of saying one thing.
"Because... You're just like a little sister to me, Ai-chan."
Tired eyes widen as Ai met Ran's soft look that made her weak. They're not in the best position right now but Ai can't help but feel happy. It took a long time for her to feel this kind of happiness again. The kind she thought she'd never feel once more. Joy caused by having an older sister.
Akemi and Ran are similar. From their kindness to their courage. From their smiles to their frown. From their selflessness to their care.
But there's one thing she will change. Unlike Miyano Akemi, Mouri Ran will not die. That's the one thing Haibara Ai will make sure of.
For Akemi's sake, for Ran's sake, for Haibara's sake.
Akemi will always be her beloved older sister. But it wouldn't hurt to have another one, right?
"Onee-san..."
Now it was Ran's turn to be astonished. As much as she treated Ai as a little sister, she never thought the young girl would feel the same. Besides, the girl's face was so far from the apathetic Haibara Ai. It was tired yet happy, scared yet determined. Doubtful but trusting.
Determination flaring once more, Ran risked everything she have for one more chance. Because Shinichi's expecting her to wait for him. Because the professor's expecting Ai to take care of him. Because Sonoko and Sera are expecting her to hang out with them. Because the detective boys are expecting Ai to solve more mysteries with them. Because Ai is expecting Ran to save the both of them. Because Ran is expecting Ai to help save the both of them.
With the help of a miracle, Ran managed to pull Haibara and herself up, saving them both from the brink of death. But it wasn't all bad. After all, they had found a bond that the two of them can share.
-
Kudo Shinichi—right now he's Edogawa Conan— was on the verge of breaking because of the panic in his chest that's increasing every second. It's been hours since they finished their search and went back into the camp grounds. It's also been hours since both Haibara and Ran went missing.
He didn't know what happened, but he surmised that they met the suspect and ran into some danger. It's actually the first time he wished his deduction was wrong.
While the professor and the detective boys are busy screaming their lungs off, he tried to search for clues or any way to find them faster.
They could still be fighting the suspect, or they were taken away, or worse, killed.
Instead of wallowing himself with endless horrible situations, he tried to focus more on trying to find them. He closed his eyes and think. Closed off to the world with his thoughts.
Suddenly, he heard a snore. It was faint, but it was there. He called the others as he followed the weak sound as they stalk behind him and found a cliff. The professor warned the three to step back as Conan studied the edge. He looked down and regretted it afterwards, seeing the cliff was so tall he couldn't see a thing in the bottom.
The snore was becoming louder and louder and louder--
Until they all heard Ayumi screamed. He found the little girl crying as she was pointing something below her. There lies the suspect, completely unconscious. From the punch and few bruises that can be seen from the killer's body, Conan was sure this was Ran's doing. It mean they're close!
He heard the snoring again, and followed it swiftly. And as he shooed away a piece of branch from his face, he saw the culprit of the noise. Well, culprits to be specific.
Under a tree, leans a sleeping—snoring—Mouri Ran and Haibara Ai. Both are covered and dirt and few cuts and bruises. Conan rushed to the both of them, the detective boys and professor Agasa following after.
The professor shushed the kids, telling them not to wake the two who looked exhausted. Conan's gaze travelled at Ran's left cheek and stomach that seemed to have a shallow cut. He likes to asked and scold Haibara but seeing her weary state, he couldn't bring himself to.
They just all smiled out of relief that both are fine, letting the two rest for a bit more. Besides, their position was kinda cute. Ran leaning against the tree, her head hung low bumped against a small frame leaning towards her as well. For a second, Conan thought they look like a pair of sisters.
-End-
I just did this for my personal enjoyment and my love for the Haibara and Ran sister dynamic

Red-Hearted Tragedy
For @tanteigisachi, thank you for pulling me out of my hole and back out here <3 You’re the kindest! I hope you can visualize the chirping birds and colorful butterflies and glittering rainbow that I’m presenting you this with (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*: ・゚*
Fandom: Detective Conan/DCMK Pairing: Shinichi/Ran, (side Heiji/Kazuha and Kaito/Aoko) Rating: G Genre/Tags: Fluff, Domestic Warning: None
•
Shinichi has a theory about parenthood.
He used to think it’s not possible that once one becomes a parent, one also stops being anything else. Like the status he has right now. He was always known as a Great Detective of the East, the badass son of the famous writer Kudo Yusaku and a soccer enthusiast. Now he's barely himself, the state of parenting having sucked his body dry of anything remotely cool he had going on. Shinichi wonders if Ran feels the same. When Conan first arrived, they were extremely thrilled about finally being a family and so for a long while, Conan was pretty much everything in their minds. Ran started refusing to go to work at Teitan and Shinichi missed more cases than he can account for—all in favor of watching their baby grow healthy and in a strong household.
They succeeded. Conan is now a kind, obedient, smart and very lovely four year old and there is still nothing more important than him in his parents’ lives.
However.
It will be Valentine's Day soon and Shinichi would love for this to be their first Valentine’s Day without Conan's presence jumping and screaming for them to watch Pororo instead of opening a bottle of wine. Don't get him wrong, he loves his son. He just misses being romantic with his wife. That’s just tragic.
That's why he calls Heiji.
"Forget it," the guy says. "Kazuha and I had a hard time booking a nanny for Valentine's. She's pretty expensive and the only one who hasn’t been threatened by the twins so far."
Shinichi traps the phone between his ear and his shoulder while typing the report to finish up his latest murder case. It's the second case he’d taken this week. He's tired and grumpy and wants to end his week early to spend the whole Valentine weekend, but people seem to be exploding with their grudges, stalking ex-girlfriends here and murdering ex-husbands there.
"You should get them checked," Shinichi jokes half-hardheartedly.
The other gasps. Shinichi can practically hear Heiji’s Giant Head of Doom growing in size. "Don't insult my beautiful children!"
"You could at least ask your nanny to look after Conan as well. He's quiet, and you know he won't make any mess."
"Get your own nanny." Heiji scoffs. "Where ya’ at?"
Shinichi exhales. "Working."
"How many cases ya’ got this week?"
"Three. People really need to chill. It’s the holiday of love, not hatred. ” Shinichi answers with such exasperation and Heiji laughs. “I take it you’re just as busy as I am?”
"Nah, I got a murder and a robbery earlier this week but now I’m chillin’ and ready for the weekend." Shinichi just knows that his best friend is grinning ear to ear at this moment.
And so he decides he's had enough of him. He hangs up with a scowl, but not before sending one last grumble in Heiji’s way.
•
Ran places a cup of coffee in front of Shinichi, Conan's orange juice in one hand and this morning’s newspaper under her arm.
"He won't do it," Shinichi says.
Ran squints, sitting across from him at the dining table. "Kazuha-chan told me they’ve gone through a lot of trouble to find a good babysitter. I think that means they do not want to babysit this weekend."
"Well they just found one and he says he won't share." Shinichi sips at his coffee.
Ran chuckles, standing up and calling for Conan, who walks out from his bedroom already perfectly dressed (hair a mess, though). The four year old tiptoes to reach his juice box, jumping on the couch once the box is secure between his hands. Shinichi gulps his coffee before walking toward Conan and sitting himself next to his son on the couch.
"Hey," he says.
Conan blinks dazedly, clearly bored out of his mind and undoubtedly thinking about the comfort of his bed. It's barely even eight and the kid is already tired.
"So... today is a special day," he continues. Conan stares at him. "A special day for... daddies and mommies."
"Valentine's Day?" Conan asks. Shinichi frowns.
"Yes, how do you know about Valentine's Day?"
"Everyone knows about Valentine's Day, Dad."
"But you're too young to..." he shakes his head. "Never mind. Are you ready for school?"
Conan stands up as if doing so is such a burden, and Shinichi thinks about talking to Ran about ways to make kindergarten seem more interesting for their toddler.
•
There is no nanny available. All nannies were already booked by smarter couples that probably have been planning their Valentine's night for days. Shinichi and Ran are easily 'the rest'.
"Kuroba, please? Can you watch Conan just for one night?"
"It's Valentine's Day, Kudo."
"You told me that you don’t have any plans with Aoko anyway. You could use some company. Conan is nice company, he likes your magic tricks and he's an amazing listener. You can dump all your dissatisfaction with life and your father-in-law and the world on him, he won't even mind."
Kaito is beyond outraged. "First of all, I DO have plans with Aoko! It’s just that her father wants to have a Valentine's dinner with her that she can’t say no to.” Shinichi has to drag the phone away from his ear. “Second of all, ALL kids love my magic tricks and. And I am definitely NOT dissatisfied."
Shinichi wisely chooses not to point out the extreme dissatisfaction in the magician’s voice. "Please? Ran and I really need this moment. It's been ages since we went on a romantic dinner. We haven’t even had the chance to spend any alone time outside lately."
"And you blame that on your son." Kaito's tone is accusing and reprimanding.
"No. Yes, somehow, but, not in a bad way. It's just... Being a parent is hard. We focus all our time and energy on Conan and end up with nothing left for ourselves. I miss having a day for us, you know?"
There's silence. Shinichi hopes Kaito is trying to picture how hard it is to have a child and eventually consents, because he's Shinichi's last option. But to be honest, maybe it’s not the best idea to put in the magician’s head. He doesn’t want an angry Aoko coming for him.
"Ok, fine." Kaito answers and Shinichi punches the air in celebration. "Remember that you owe me another one and that I expect free food."
"You got it, Kuroba!"
•
If all kids are as calm as Conan, Kaito muses, then he can’t wait until Aoko and his bundle of joy arrives. He only prays that his child wouldn’t turn out to be as hyper as the Hattori twins. Conan doesn't seem affected by Kaito's presence, but then again, everything the kid needs is his pillow and a television. Preferably some cartoons.
•
Shinichi averts his gaze from the two just as his wife walks into the living room. Ran looks good. So good. And Shinichi's hands are sweating with anticipation. It's been so long since the last time they've gone out, just the two of them where clowns and kiddy toys aren't involved.
He approaches her, who is now leaning against the wall with arms folded on his chest and a fond expression on his face. She's watching Conan staring at the TV while clutching his pillow, the boy's eyes already drooping with drowsiness. Kaito sits next to him and occasionally attempts to chat, but Conan isn't exactly a conversationalist. He's one of the quiet ones. And definitely Shinichi’s son.
"He's so big," Ran mentions in that tone she only uses when talking about Conan. "Did four years really go by that fast?"
Shinichi sighs as Conan perches his head up to watch Kaito perform some tricks. "Why? Do you still think about him as a baby?"
"He's still a child. He still needs care." Ran bites her lips, worry washing over her features. "Maybe we should cancel Valentine's Dinner."
Before Shinichi can muster up an angry answer about several months without a couple's moment and the survival of their relationship while being parents, Kaito walks towards them.
"You guys should go or you'll miss the reservation," he says, that annoying complacent smile on.
"Do you have the list of things he's allowed to eat and do you have the list of numbers to call if something happens?" Ran fidgets with her fingers. Shinichi promptly holds her hands.
Kaito smiles. "Yep, I've got it covered, Ran-san. Just go and have a good time and come back early if you can."
They probably wouldn’t.
•
Shinichi also has a theory about having a good time on Valentine's Day.
For them, it's not possible anymore.
They make it to the reservation in peace and the lobster Ran ordered is on its way when Shinichi's phone rings. It's their home number, so it has to be Kaito. He takes a deep breath to mentally prepare himself for a disaster, but instead of destruction he gets his son's voice.
"Heiji jichan?" Conan says.
Shinichi pulls the phone away and glares at the screen. Why would his own son call Hattori, not him? Shinichi did set Hattori’s number on their speed dial after his and Ran’s, but nevertheless he is gravely disappointed.
"Conan?" he asks, Ran frowning.
"Oh Dad? Sorry, I want to call Heiji jichan. Goodb—”
Shinichi narrows his eyes and interrupts before his son can hang up. “Hey buddy, is everything ok?”
“Um, It's Kaito jichan, dad. He's dying."
Shinichi's brain processes the fact that his toddler is nowhere near harm, and he exhales very loudly in relief. And once he processes what his son actually said, he chokes on his own saliva. Ran leans towards him, eyebrows knitted together. 'What's wrong?' she mouths. Shinichi can't even bring himself to say it.
"What—” he coughs into the phone. "What do you mean, Conan? You didn't make someone stick a fork up the socket again, did you? Conan, I told you that is dangerous."
Ran gasps, horror freezing her face. Both her hands fly to her mouth as she stands up, dropping to the floor next to Shinichi's chair. He runs a hand through his hair and slowly shakes his head, reassuring her that their son is ok. Although there is someone dying and they should be on their way home already.
"He ate something from the fridge, Dad. Now he's moving funny and he sounds weird."
If he tunes everything out, he can indeed listen to faint noises in the background. That's probably Kaito having a hard time.
"What is it?" Ran asks, squeezing Shinichi's thigh.
"Kuroba ate something and is now dying."
"DYING?" She pulls herself up and paces around in panic. "He didn't eat the stew did he? Because Sonoko sent us that and she said it’s something called Bouillabaisse which is—”
“— fish... stew." Shinichi finishes lamely.
Which Kaito is tragically allergic to.
"We need to go," he jumps from his seat, drawing his wallet and throwing some money on the table. He wishes no one would steal it because they're in a hurry and he always sees people throwing money on tables at movies so he figures it works. Out of luck, the restaurant Shinichi picked is a few minute drive from their house. There's a nice chance they'll get to save Kaito.
•
Shinichi's theories have been proven correct:
1. He's no longer simply Kudo Shinichi, great Detective of the East and husband of Mouri Ran. He's now Kudo Shinichi, Conan's dad. 2. Therefore, it's tragically impossible to enjoy Valentine's Day with only the woman he loves. 3. His son is perfectly okay with conveniently inconveniencing his uncle Heiji at any given circumstance (in this case, he calls Heiji after Shinichi hangs up just to see which one of them would arrive to save Kaito the fastest). 4. Couldn't Kaito have picked another moment to try and die?
Shinichi's Valentine's Day is now being spent at the ER, with his four year old son fast asleep in his wife’s arms while said wife stares glassy-eyed at the television in the waiting room. It turns out that Conan was trying to call Heiji instead of him because he did not want to ruin the “special day for mommies and daddies” for his own mommy and daddy.
Well, it doesn’t really matter now. Everyone’s Valentine’s Day has been ruined beyond repair. It’s something they’d definitely look back and laugh about, but looking around the room, Shinichi’s certain that none of them has enough energy to muster a nice joke.
Although, he actually chuckles when he hears Kazuha say, “I told you something was gonna happen tonight, Heiji. I told you so.”
There are bags under Ran's eyes and her hair is disheveled, the red sweater she'd carefully picked for their date now draped loosely around their son for his warmth. Shinichi snorts, feeling mocked. All he wanted was a romantic night with his wife. That's all.
He sticks his hand into his pocket, thumb flicking over the pendant of the necklace he was supposed to give to Ran as a surprise. It's a simple necklace. Not that he doesn't have the money—it's just that Ran doesn't care about expensive stuff.
"Hey," A whisper pulls him from his reveries and Shinichi glances at his wife. Ran looks tired, but so damn beautiful. How could someone as gorgeous as her have ended up with a piece of geeky detective like him? "Don't beat yourself up."
He sighs, blinking as he drags the necklace out of his pocket. "We've changed, haven't we?" He brings his eyes up to Ran's.
“Of course we have. There are three of us now. It doesn't mean we can't have a good time. Look at Aoko-san and Kuroba-kun, I’d say they’re having it worse than us.” Ran smiles knowingly, hand caringly brushing over Conan's hair. “Also, is that my present?”
Shinichi smiles back at her, lifting his hands. "It is... Yeah, it's supposed to be your present."
"I love it!" Ran laughs.
"I already know you do." Shinichi takes one last look at the necklace and decides that it will look better around Ran’s neck. He would gladly help Ran put the necklace on, but Conan is an effective clinger, both arms locked around his mom’s neck.
"Shinichi… thank you. I didn't have time to get you a present, sorry." She mumbles the last part of the sentence with guilt, eyes still locked with his. He can see the apologetic shine in her eyes, even though he doesn’t understand why she feels the need to apologize to him. He doesn’t want anything else from her. She’s already everything he can ever wish for.
"I don’t need anything else," he says, pushing the necklace into Ran's pocket before leaning over to peck at his wife’s lips.
—
Shinichi has another theory about this night.
It didn't turn out to be what he was expecting it to be: his friend almost accidentally killed himself; his four year old son almost witnessed someone die; his best friend is willing to drop anything just to attend to said son; they nearly ran over an old lady in their haste to go home to save Kaito's life (which was proven futile anyway, because Heiji miraculously appeared first to get them to the hospital) and all of them are now ending their very special night at the hospital as Kaito recovers from his near-death experience.
It was a tragedy. Everything went wrong except for one thing. Shinichi and Ran went through it all together.

Yay!! Thanks for sending me a request! Its been to long since Ive wrote anything. 😭 Since this is from you, I'm assuming you wanted ShinRan ;) Sorry if there is any mistakes, I did this before I had to go to work. Also, sorry this took me forever 🤦♀️The ask box is still open for this so if anybody wants to send a request from that drabble post, feel free to send me one :D
06. I want to let someone who keeps asking me out down easy, so I blurt that I'm in a relationship and things sort of got out of hand
oOo
He had to admit- he was disappointed. When the rumors started circlating around.
Mouri Ran had a boyfriend.
The news had taken over their school by storm. After all, even though she herself didn't realize it, she was the talk of many high school boys' conversations. Namely, Hondou Eisuke's conversations.
It was no secret that the high schooler was infatuated with Ran. It was almost embarassing how obvious the former made his feelings and intentions known. And every single time, Shinichi had to wonder and glare at why Ran just wouldn't tell him no. To tell him to back off. It was obvious to him and everybody else around that she wasn't interested. And it was also obvious to him and everybody else that if she didn't just admit that, Hondou Eisuke would forever pine over her.
She was too nice. Unlike the company that she kept, she was too concious of other people's feelings. Numerous times he had overheard Suzuki scold her friend for not being honest and upfront.
"Tell him their's somebody else," Suzuki rolled her eyes as she was turned in her chair and facing Ran.
Ran bit her lip as she looked at her hands in her lap. "But that would be lying," she said meekly.
"Doesn't have to be if you'd just confess," Sonoko retorted easily.
All at once, Ran's face erupted crimson and Shinichi felt his ear perk up at the turn their conversation took. He wasn't big on girls gossiping. It usually gave him a headache considering it usually was from his fangirls but . . . confessing? Ran wanted to confess to someone?
"S-Sonoko!" the girl with the steaming red face sputtered. When her eyes began darting around the room as if to make sure no one heard, he quickly diverted his gaze to the book in his hand.
"Oh please," Sonoko huffed. "You're acting as if you would be turned down. That nerd trips over himself from you just looking at him." Her response then spurred on an argument that would clearly give him a headache if he tried to decipher it. Already, he was stuck on the one relevation.
Ran wanted to confess to someone?
Unconicously, his heartbeat steadily increased as did his curiosity.
Ran wanted to confess to someone and according to Suzuki, the feeling was mutual.
Shinichi was let down. He was admittedly, disappointed. Shinichi had wanted to confess to her but after realizing how many Red Days had passed them by, it hardened the point that the two had only ever really had one interaction where they hadn't been forced to speak to each other. Besides the occasional group project, Ran and him hadn't had a real conversation since he headbutted that bully for crumpling her nametag in cherry blossom class.
When they were four.
It was quite sad honestly when it had been love at first sight for him and it clearly hadn't been for her. In fact, he had always thought Ran hated him since in the midst of that first meeting he had also called her a crybaby.
Smooth, he thought broodingly at the reminder.
"Sonoko," Ran chastised softly. "Someone might hear you. . ."
"Good," the Suzuki heiress snorted. "Hopefully Eisuke-kun and-"
With a small scream, the other girl jumped up from her chair and slammed both hands over her friend's mouth, smothering whatever it was she had been about to say. All the comotion had the room silencing and a few other students turned to face the pair. Noticing all the attention she had attracted, her face went an even more vibrant shade and she slammed back into her chair, eyes zeroed in on the wood of her desk and not daring to look anywhere else.
Sonoko had smirked at first at the embarrassment she caused her friend but once everybody moved on and was no longer looking at them questioningly, she sighed. "Look- all I'm saying is that it's time to be honest. And sometimes that means having to hurt someone." Her voice was significantly more gentle than her earlier teases. "But the longer you wait, the harder he'll take it when you finally do confess to the one you want."
That being said, the teacher chose that moment to enter the room and address the students. As he continued to watch Ran, he took notice of how she was still staring hard at her desk and also of the small frown that was tilting her lips slightly down.
Suddenly her gaze moved to his and too caught off guard at the fact he'd just gotten caught, all he did was stare back with wide eyes. She looked slightly surprised that he was already looking at her and though her cheeks slowly began to darken again, she didn't look away.
oOo
And thus the news spread like wildfire. It was all anyone was really talking about. Even students from other grades who likely didn't even really know her were talking about it.
Shinichi didn't care about any of that. All he could think or wonder about was when in the time span of 24 hours had Ran got a boyfriend? Did she really already confess in such a small amount of time just from being hounded by Suzuki. He couldn't believe it but it had to be true especially after he saw how Hondou looked that day.
He looked . . . distraut- disappointed. Much how Shinichi was feeling but luckily he was much better at hiding his emotions.
Any hope that he had of being the one Ran wanted to confess to was squashed. He felt stupid for even considering it. Sure he had a fan club. He probably got more chocolates on Valentine's than any other student in their school. But he never got a single one from her. Ever.
Then as time passed and a week went by, slowly things began to calm down and everybody moved on. That is. . . until a new craze took over the school.
Who was Ran's boyfriend?
Shinichi would admit, he was curious as to who it was as well. He had probably been the first to notice that no one had actually seen her with said 'boyfriend'. Cause he had been bursting at the seams to figure out just who the hell had her blushing so madly when talking with Suzuki the other day.
It had been a week since she apparently began dating someone yet no one had seen or even heard the name of who this mystery guy was. She still walked around school with the same group of girls. She arrived and left school with the same people and at the same times.
In fact, the only thing that changed was . . . Hondou bothering her . . . But suddenly that even stopped. It seemed his curiosity had yet to ebb and he outright heard the high schooler question who this mystery bachelor was.
It had sent Ran into a blushing and stuttering panic until Sonoko stepped in and voiced what was the truth.
It wasn't his buisiness. It wasn't anybody's buisiness. No matter how much Shinichi felt like he deserved to know, Suzuki's snappy retort made him realize that it wasn't his buisiness either.
Not until. . .
"Will you be my boyfriend?"
Shinichi's eyes bulged practically out of his head as his face erupted red and he thought he might combust. When Ran asked to speak with him after school, this wasn't what he had been expecting.
Taking notice of his gaping mouth and the fact that she just shocked him into a frozen statue, Ran's already scorching face went brighter.
"I- I thought you were already dating somebody," Shinichi found the breath to say and practically had to force the words out.
Now a new emotion seemed to take over the high school girl and it made him frown.
It was shame.
Slowly, she began to shake her head without meeting his gaze anymore. If anything it was staring blankly at his chest that was just at her eye level. "I . . . actually don't have a boyfriend. . . “ she trailed off slowly and he could see how embarrassed and ashamed she was by the confession.
And that's when it all clicked for him. Why no one had seen or even knew the name of this supposed boyfriend. Why Ran looked so upset and just humiiated anytime someone questioned her about it.
"Your talk with Suzuki," he said slowly but with revelation but all it did was make Ran look even more mortified.
"You were listening!?” Her voice raised in horror and probably at the reminder of everything they had said and admitted in that conversation.
Thinking it best not to lie, Shinichi simply nodded his head.
All of a sudden she looked like she wanted to cry. “How much did you hear!?" she asked in a panic.
Maybe it wasn't the best thing to think about all that he had heard in that particular conversation. Granted they had been talking in a public setting but it was rude how much he went out of his way just to hear them. But it also reminded him of things that he didn't much like thinking about.
With a small scowl and a half-lidded glare, he shoved his hands firmly in the pockets of his school uniform pants. "Enough to wonder why you're not asking the boy you actually like to be your fake boyfriend," he grumbled while looking away to glare at anything he could lay his eyes on. He just didn't want to look at her because he knew what his words would mean. They were so obvious. They were laced with jealously and just so much bitterness that he knew it wouldn't be a secret anymore.
He liked Mouri Ran. And he didn't want to see that rejection he had felt when he first realized Ran didn't like him. It just hurt. He didn't want to be her fake anything. And it was so insulting that she'd even think to-
"I am."
Her voice sounded so tiny and meek but it resounded loudly in his chest. Suddenly he could hear the loud pounding of his heart and the blood rushing in his ears as he had no choice but to snap his gaze back to hers.
He felt winded.
He felt like the world was spinning.
He felt. . . confused.
"W-What?" he said so eloquently.
"I- I meant to say something sooner. Before those rumors started spreading," she said with a mixture of embarrassment and annoyance. "But one day Eisuke-kun just ambushed me and I just-!" With a noise of frustration she covered her face before running the hand through her long brown hair successfully making it tangled. Sighing, she shook her head again. "I know it was wrong to do- to lie to him like that but Sonoko got that idea in my head and I just blurted it out!"
After her confession, it was dead silent between the two. He couldn't help but stare at her as if she'd grown two heads. And she seemed content to let him just comprehend all of what she just said. That or she was simply feeling too humiliated to say anything more.
And then finally. . . .
"You were going to confess to me?"
His words startled her and obviously caught her off guard. It had her blinking, surprised by what he just said. Was that all he had heard?
Probably.
"You mean . . you're not upset I lied . . . ?"
Upset?! He had never had such a hard time reading a person before. He'd like to think he was good at it, being the amazing detective that he was. But no one had ever confused him or been more difficult to understand than Ran. And he knew that was likely because he couldn't ever think straight when she was involved.
Ignoring her ridiculous question all together, he got a small smirk on his face and a new idea.
“So then, is this you asking me to be your fake or real boyfriend?”

Pairing: ShinRan Rating: T Summary: "Warui, Ran. It's because of this summer heat, I swear -- It's making my head ache...and at that moment, I couldn't help but notice how kissable you were - even until now. Damnit."
-o-o-o-o-o-o-
It was a hot, Wednesday afternoon. Summer had just kicked in and everyone in Teitan High School was already planning their summer vacation since school term was nearing its end. Meanwhile, four people remained stuck in the school library. Shinichi, Ran, Sera, and Sonoko went there after homeroom in order to help Shinichi with the lessons he had missed while he was away, plus the extra credits the teachers fortunately gave him to make up for his absence.
“Mou, I can’t believe we’re stuck in the library helping Shinichi with his extra credits! I should be planning our beach trips or watching Makoto-san’s karate training right at this moment!” Sonoko scoffed, obviously annoyed.
“Well, Ran-san did say that Kudo-kun is going to treat us to a delicious ramen shop after this so why not?” Sera casually remarked.
“C’mon guys, it won’t take a while since Shinichi’s already smart, so let’s just do our best so we can finish early!” Ran justified. It was actually her who convinced the two girls to help Shinichi catch up with his backlog. She believed it would be more enjoyable, not to mention faster, if there were four of them doing the work rather than just her and Shinichi. More importantly, she wanted Shinichi to finish all this work so that it wouldn’t have to carry over during summer break.
A sulking Shinichi let out a big sigh. “Ran, I told you that it’s fine, no need to drag the others to help me.”
“Shinichi, the more people I invite, the faster we finish. Besides, you should be thankful they’re helping you! Who’s fault is it again that he’s missed almost one semester worth of classes?” Ran looked at him with half-lidded eyes.
“Barou—It’s not like I have a choice! You—” Shinichi was interrupted by the cold stare of the librarian at him, who was already pointing to the ‘Silence Please’ sign plastered on the wall.
Sonoko and Sera stifled their laughter. “There, there, no need to fight over this! Why don’t you just make up?” Sera requested them in a low voice.
“Anything for my Shinichi-kuuuun~~~ Now kiss! No one’s looking except us!” Sonoko teased, making both Ran and Shinichi blush and Sera laugh.
It had been two months since Shinichi returned to Ran permanently. They started dating officially ever since Ran manifested her acceptance to Shinichi’s London confession during their school trip in Kyoto. And now that they’re together, Ran found it relieving how she didn’t need to deny her feelings anymore to her friends whenever they tease her. In fact, it made her really happy that she could now openly express her fondness for Shinichi. They would hold hands during their walk home from school. They had even kissed, thrice, technically. Once on the cheek during their Kyoto trip, and another on the lips, albeit accidentally, on one fine spring afternoon while sitting under the cherry blossoms, during lunch period, when Ran suddenly looked to her left while Shinichi’s face was close to hers because he was removing a sakura petal from her hair. Although their lips only momentarily brushed against each other, their hearts pounded the loudest. Even louder than the time they almost kissed on the lips at Kiyomizudera temple. After that accidental kiss, the two of them stared at each other, with flustered faces, and after five seconds, they laughed. After their laughs subsided, they eventually found themselves kissing once more, this time longer and sweeter, with smiles curling in their lips as they did. The latter kiss was what they considered as their first official kiss as a couple.
Back in the library, the four of them had already sorted out the Calculus, English, and Chemistry books Shinichi needed. Sera and Shinichi placed the stacks of books on their table across the librarian. It appeared that they were the only ones remaining there, and most of the students had already gone home or were attending their after-school club activities. Ran had no karate training every Wednesday, that’s why she chose this day to help Shinichi out. In reality though, Shinichi really didn’t need help given his extraordinary intellect, but nonetheless Ran still insisted, being the caring and responsible girlfriend that she was. Shinichi could only do nothing but accept her assistance.
Only a week had passed since summer began, yet the heat felt like it was almost at its peak. The intense warmth and humidity defeated the air conditioner and ceiling fans inside the room. Shinichi was trying to concentrate on the Calculus textbook in front of him, but Sonoko and Ran, who were sitting across each other, distracted him with their toned down voices. He wasn’t even trying to eavesdrop but their conversation was easy enough to hear from where he sat. They were basically just talking about random girl stuff. But among other things, Shinichi couldn’t help but notice how Ran incessantly fanned herself with her hands during the whole conversation.
“Must be the weather,” Shinichi thought. He tried rereading the problem set in front of him, but surprisingly, he had a hard time concentrating. He kept on glancing back to where Ran sat, which was beside him. Ran, with the back of her hand, began to wipe the drops of sweat forming on her neck and under her chin. To Shinichi, looking at Ran do that was a strangely… interesting sight. He didn’t know why. Not even attempting to find an answer, he just shrugged it off and resumed answering the Calculus textbook.
Barely twenty minutes later, he was already more than halfway done with the Math coverage. Of course, that’s just Shinichi being Shinichi. Ran scooted closer to check on his progress, and upon seeing that he was almost done, Ran ruffled his bangs in front.
“Good job, Meitantei-san!” Ran praised. Shinichi pretended that it didn’t affect him so he muttered a silent “tch” under his breath. Deep down though, he had to admit that his heart jumped a bit when Ran patted his head.
“After that, you do English. Sonoko and I already marked the pages you need to answer. And after English, you’ll do Chemistry. Sera-san’s marking the exercises right now,” Ran instructed, even though she was desperately trying her best not to sound like a teacher or else Shinichi would make fun of her.
“Hai, hai, sensei,” Shinichi snorted. Too bad he already did, much to Ran’s annoyance.
Not long after, Shinichi finished all the assigned exercises for Math. Just as he was about to get the English book placed by Ran near his seat, Ran halted him.
“Hold on, I think I made a mistake, Shinichi. This English book is the wrong volume. I need to find the correct one. Let me just go look for it.”
“All right, I’ll help you,” Shinichi remarked. This earned him a smile and a thank you from Ran.
Shinichi stood up, stretched his arms and back, and accompanied his girlfriend to the shelves area to look for the correct book. Ran started browsing the area behind the first shelf, so Shinichi went to the row of shelves after it. Upon reaching that area, he noticed that this portion of the room was warmer than where the tables were. Apparently, the air conditioning unit on this side of the room was broken, so it wasn’t really doing anything except making Shinichi even more pissed. Shinichi was already hating this summer heat. He couldn’t wait to go home, turn the AC on in his own library, and read Sherlock Holmes for the nth time to his heart’s content. But for now, he had no choice but to tolerate this inferno. Ran wouldn’t let the four of them go unless he’d finish half of his total backlog today.
Ran was already done searching the first row of shelves, so she proceed to the next row where Shinichi was currently at. Ran was at the farther end of the shelf near the windows overlooking the school field, while Shinichi remained on the left end side nearer the library card catalog. They were two bookshelves away from the table occupied by Sonoko and Sera. Shinichi could see the two girls from the spaces left by the uneven height of the books on the shelves. Both of them seem to be minding their own business. Books and bags were scattered on the table. Sera was now concentrating on a mystery novel she found earlier, while Sonoko had her attention on her phone and was browsing social media.
Upon reaching the second aisle and before Ran resumed her search, she asked Shinichi if he had already found the book, to which the boy replied in the negative. Ran sighed, and eventually she transferred her attention to the lineup of books in front of her. Shinichi looked at her from afar.
Even from a distance of three shelves away, Shinichi noticed that Ran was also starting to get irked by the hot temperature. Her eyebrows were furrowed and her mouth formed a small frown. He also couldn’t avoid noticing the moisture formulating on the side of her face. Shinichi stared at the sweat which trickled down Ran’s forehead. The sweat traced a line down her cheek, then her jaw, then down her neck until it settled on the crook of her collarbone…
Shinichi gulped.
He didn’t notice how long he had been staring until Ran called his name.
“Shinichi? Are you okay?” Ran quizzically looked at Shinichi with her ever innocent eyes.
“O-oh, sorry, I just spaced out…” Shinichi struggled to look for an excuse and tried to hide the flustered look on his face. Of course he couldn’t possibly say that he was admiring her face, and how… appealing it looks, even more with sweat running down on it!
“Ugh, damn this heat. It’s making me sweat a lot.” Ran sighed as she struggled to remove her blazer uniform, thereby leaving her with her white long sleeve shirt and green tie. This caught Shinichi off guard, who found himself staring again.
Shinichi could see that the sweat made Ran’s white shirt semi-opaque. He could almost make out of it the straps and corners of her bra. Ran unbuttoned the two top buttons of her shirt to reveal more of her skin but still careful not to expose what’s beneath it further. Ran just wanted some air amidst the scorching heat. Yet no matter how innocent her intentions were, to Shinichi’s mind, he knew for sure that Ran’s acts were making him feel some type of way.
“Damn right it is…” Shinichi muttered under his breath, earning him a curious stare from Ran.
Ran seemed like she was about to say something but then decided against it on the last minute. She shrugged, placed her uniform on one of the stepladders piled with books, and finally resumed her business at the other end of the bookshelf by the window, trying to find the book she needed.
Meanwhile, Shinichi stood there and was already mentally cursing himself. “Goddamnit, Kudou! Get your shit together! You’re looking like a pervert right now ogling at her like this!” Shinichi ruffled his hair trying to shake off all the provocative things swarming his mind. This is not the right time, damn it. Not the right time… but was it just his imagination that from his peripheral view, he could see Ran glancing at his direction? Was it just his imagination that Ran’s face showed hints of red? Was it just the sun that’s making her face look even more rosy and beautiful, even when he’s just seeing all of these from the corner of his eye?
Shinichi finally decided to take a good look at Ran. He was surprised to see that indeed, Ran was staring back at him. With red cheeks and pleading eyes. Almost as if she was wanting Shinichi to say something, or do something. Or…
“Ran? Is something the matter?” Shinichi finally spoke.
“Ah—Well, I, umm…I can’t quite reach this book on the top shelf…” Ran shyly cooed, pointing at the thick book on top of the shelf, entitled HS Intermediate English: Volume 3.
“There’s a stepladder beside you, you know,” Shinichi remarked.
“But it’s filled with books and it might take time to remove all and place them back right after,” Ran pouted. Seeming to have regretted her request, she followed up, “…But oh well, I’ll just do it myself.”
Shinichi chuckled softly. “Just kidding. Here, let me get it for you.”
Shinichi approached Ran until they were only about 10 centimeters apart. Ran could almost feel her heart jump out of her chest as Shinichi rested his left arm on her left shoulder, so that she was between Shinichi and the bookshelf. Shinichi’s face was so close to Ran’s right cheek and she swore that this distance was making her feel things out of the ordinary. Shinichi tiptoed a little and extended his right arm to reach the book on top of the shelf. Ran looked up to glance at Shinichi’s face, and she was not quite sure if what she saw was a blushing Shinichi, or a Shinichi whose face reflected the red shades of the sun. She also noticed that Shinichi was perspiring. Unlike her, he still had his thick blue school blazer on, and Ran thought that it must be why Shinichi was sweating so much. The summer heat was really taking a toll on them.
Shinichi finally got the book and as he was about to hand it to her, he froze.
Without warning, Ran’s hand unconsciously moved to unbutton Shinichi’s blazer. Slowly. One button at a time.
Wide-eyed Shinichi stared at oblivious Ran.
Silence.
…
“Omae—” Shinichi really didn’t know what to say. His face was already as red as a tomato at this point.
Ran didn’t realize the gravity of her actions until she noticed her hands in front of her, almost done unbuttoning the whole of Shinichi’s school blazer. She flushed.
“Wah—“
Now Ran didn’t know what to say either.
“I’m– I’m sorry, I just saw how drenched you were in sweat while you were getting the book, so I wanted to remove your blazer to cool you do—”
Ran didn’t finish her sentence as she was interrupted by Shinichi’s one hand on her left wrist and the other on the back of her waist, pulling her close to press his lips against hers.
Ran’s heart leaped.
“Shinichi—what on earth…!”
Her brain was screaming for her heart. Shinichi was right in front of her, and his lips were covering hers.
She tried to steady her footing as she was about to lose her balance, but then Shinichi’s hand behind her supported her and helped her adjust her position, and this pushed her even closer to him, removing any inch of space left.
Just as she was about to completely process what was happening and before she could close her already half-opened eyes to reciprocate, she heard a voice at the other end of the room.
“Hey, Ran-san and Kudo-kun? Daijoubu? What’s that loud sound?” Sera whispered loudly from her chair, so as not to irk the librarian more than that how loud sound already did.
Alarmed, the two teenagers broke off the kiss. Shinichi didn’t even notice that he dropped the book Ran asked him to get and that it made a loud, echoing noise on the marble floor of the silent library. He didn’t notice how he dropped it before his own hands instinctively pulled Ran to him.
“N-nothing! Shinichi just dropped a book…” a nervous Ran replied, bobbing her head from behind the bookshelves to see Sera. She was evidently trying her best to sound normal, and luckily, Sera didn’t notice anything suspicious from her voice. From the spaces in the bookshelves, Shinichi and Ran had a good view of the table, and there they could see Sera’s dismissive expression as she went back to the book she was reading.
Little did Sera know that from behind these bookshelves, Ran and Shinichi were struggling to regain their composure from what literally transpired just one minute ago. Shinichi had already removed his hands from Ran’s waist and wrist, and was now facing the wall on the other side, hiding his embarrassment. Shinichi had his head bowed, his right hand scratching his nape and his left hand on his waist. Was he regretting what he did…? Ran thought to herself.
While Ran was lost in thought, she and Shinichi were again startled by Sera’s voice. Although a bit soft, it was audible from two shelves away. “Ran-san, I’ll just go to the toilet for a while. Sonoko-san stepped out of the library a minute ago to receive a call from Makoto-san, and I don’t think she’ll be back soon. Telling you this just in case you’d wonder where we went! Of course, we’re not going to ditch you and Kudo-kun’s treat later!”
Sera paused for a moment, and then added, “…Damn this summer, isn’t it so hot?” before she finally marched away from the two reddened couple.
Sera had noooo idea.
Ran’s attention went back to the guy in front of him, who was now half-facing her although his eyes were still directed to the bookshelf. Now, save for the librarian, it’s just the two of them in the library. They could hear loudly the sound of the ceiling fan and the distant noise of students playing soccer outside.
“Sorry, Ran, my bad…” Shinichi finally spoke his first words.
Ran gave Shinichi a relatively long, questioning look before she replied. “Shinichi… what for?”
“…Eh?” Shinichi might not have expected that kind of reply from her. He was expecting more of along the lines of “Shinichi, what did you just do??” or “Baka Shinichi!!” Yet, Ran didn’t. So he just stood there, looking at her, with one eyebrow raised, and very much confused.
“Ha-ha-ha. This clueless, idiot boyfriend,” Ran sighed and her expression softened. She couldn’t contain herself so she let a cute giggle escape from her lips. Ran inched closer to him. Shinichi did as well.
“You’re not mad…?” Shinichi asked.
Ran inhaled deeply before answering. “I mean… we’re already dating, so isn’t it pretty normal to kiss like lovers do?” she said, tilting her head to the side. Shinichi blushed at his girlfriend’s statement.
“It’s just that… given the sequence of events, I got startled with what I did… I’m sorry, I mean…you were just so close to me getting that book and I noticed your sweat trickling down your face, so I wanted to help by unbuttoning your uniform… but I did it without any warning… and then what you did after…you kissed me… inside the library, a public place with the possibility that other people might see…and then I actually thought Sera-san saw us so I quickly pushed you back…” Ran stammered, her face getting one shade redder upon remembering what just happened.
This time, Shinichi was the one trying to contain his grin. “Warui, Ran… It’s because of this summer heat, I swear… It’s making my head ache…and at that moment, I couldn’t help but notice how kissable you were… even until now. Damnit.”
When he said that, Shinichi’s eyes landed on Ran’s lips, but then he quickly managed to look at someplace else like the shelf before Ran could even realize where he was actually staring.
Again, silence.
Shinichi glanced back at Ran. Ran stared back, never removing her eyes away from him. This time, Shinichi was absolutely sure that Ran was indeed blushing. And he could feel himself blushing, too.
Tension filled the air as the two teenagers closed their distance even more.
Ran broke the silence first. “…Shinichi, look at your sweat! Wait, let me get my handkerchief.” She rushed to her blazer resting on top of the stepladder and pulled out a handkerchief from its pocket. She walked back to Shinichi and started wiping the sweat from his forehead.
Ran and Shinichi were aware of the close proximity of their faces. Ran was holding Shinichi’s arm and the other was holding the handkerchief. Shinichi stared at Ran while the latter wiped the sweat dripping down the side of his face. Ran was staring, too, simultaneously at the spot she was wiping and then at his hazel eyes. The look in his eyes was something she had never seen before, and she could feel it bear a hole on her own. It was enthralling. Some kind of energy was building up in between their gaze, and they could very much feel it within them.
Not daring to break their eye contact, Shinichi removed the already unbuttoned blazer from his body. Ran couldn’t help but steal a glance at his white polo shirt, some of its fabric sticking to his skin because of the sweat, and she unconsciously bit her lip when she saw some of his toned muscles through them.
Shinichi carelessly let his blazer fall to the floor.
“It’s getting hotter, so…” Shinichi muttered, his face inching closer to Ran’s.
“Yeah…” whispered Ran under her breath, tilting her head up slowly to meet Shinichi’s.
For the second time of the day, their lips locked perfectly. Ran let go of the handkerchief, and that free hand had now snaked its way behind Shinichi’s neck while her other arm was on his chest. Shinichi’s hands gripped Ran’s waist gently. They were such an exquisite fit. Save for the white noise in the library, their heartbeats merging were the only sound they could hear. Slowly, their lips started moving, careful not to make very loud kisses in case anyone was within hearing range.
Ran slightly opened her mouth to breathe, and this gave Shinichi the opportunity to put his tongue inside it. Ran moaned at such foreign feeling. It startled her and made her knees weak. Never did it occur to her that Shinichi could be this bold. As if competing with her boyfriend, Ran did the same to him, and she felt her boyfriend’s hair stood at its end. They let their tongues linger in each other’s mouths, familiarizing themselves with each other’s taste. The hand at the back of Shinichi’s neck was now buried on the latter’s hair, massaging it rhythmically in accordance with their kisses. This kiss was strangely satisfying and entirely different from the first one they shared under the sakura tree. That one was shy and sweet. This one was daring and fierce.
Ran didn’t realize until two minutes into their heated exchange that Shinichi had already trapped her between him and the bookshelf. Shinichi’s arm was resting against the shelf while his right hand was still on his girlfriend’s waist. Shinichi was holding her so possessively now that Ran was pretty sure his fingers would leave a mark on her back. Both of Ran’s hands had already cupped Shinichi’s face, giving her the control of how deeper she’d want their kiss to be. Shinichi let out a gasp when Ran bit the bottom of his lips playfully. He paused, looked at Ran, whose eyes remained semi-closed from being drunk in their passionate lip-locking session. Shinichi smirked at such sight before he claimed her lips again.
Kudou Shinichi and Mouri Ran, hidden in between the tall shelves of the library of Teitan High School, kissing. No, making out. If someone found out about this, they’d be the talk of the whole school for months. Their classmates wouldn’t let this go for sure. Shinichi could just imagine the faces their classmates would make and the incriminating questions that would follow.
But for some reason, right now, Shinichi didn’t seem to care. Neither did he want to stop. And looking at Ran… it seemed…she didn’t want to stop, too?
“Shinichi… we have roughly five minutes…until they return…” Ran purred in between the short breaths from their kisses. Shinichi just let out a gruntled “nn” and a slight nod from his head, still engaged in their lip-locking session.
“Shinichi…did you hear m—” Ran didn’t finish her sentence because she was interrupted by Shinichi biting her left ear. She almost made a loud sound, but Shinichi was able to suppress it with two fingers over her lips. Shinichi then leaned close to her ear, making Ran shiver. In a low voice, he said, “Yes, Ran, I heard you…That’s why let’s make those five minutes count.”
Shinichi this time traced butterfly kisses on Ran’s cheek, chin, jaw, and corners of her lips, until he went lower. Ran tilted her head to the right to give him more access to her neck. She didn’t know anymore if the sweat on her neck was because of the summer heat, or because of their activity, or both. While keeping himself busy planting kisses on the spot between Ran’s neck and shoulder, Ran instinctively put one leg around Shinichi, making Shinichi jolt. He actually felt something below him rise. This cause Shinichi to suck on Ran’s neck hard, leaving a mark on her skin. Ran, on the other hand, gasped at the sensation. Shinichi licked it to appease her, and Ran moaned. They were having too much fun. This was all new to Ran, and she knew that this was new to Shinichi, too. She decided to tease him a little more by moving the leg wrapped around Shinichi higher. She was able to elicit an airy groan from him, and Ran sneered in satisfaction. Once again, they captured each other’s lips, this time, hungrily. Ran could almost taste her own sweat from Shinichi’s tongue. Shinichi’s kiss was driving her to the edge. Not long after, Ran felt Shinichi’s hand fumbling its way inside her shirt. His touch was cold on her skin, a stark contrast with the warmth of the season. His hand settled at the bottom of her torso.
Ran got nervous. She knew in her mind that this was all too sudden, and her heart was racing so fast that she felt like it was going to burst any second. But when she semi-opened her eyes during their session to steal a glance at Shinichi, what she saw almost drove her to the brink of madness. He was sweating, the beads of sweat intensely rolling down his forehead. His eyes were closed, but even if it was, she could sense the desire emanating from him while he kissed her hard. In the moments where they would briefly separate to breathe, she could see his moist, red lips, a little bit swollen from her playful bites. The strands standing out from his hair already messy from her grasp reflected the sunset’s orange hues. And his lean body was so tightly pressed against her, giving her more than just butterflies. Shinichi was hot. And this caused her to feel a strange, warm sensation building below her stomach. She couldn’t believe she was really doing this with Kudou Shinichi, her childhood friend turned boyfriend. The mystery freak who only seemed to care about solving crimes and catching culprits was right here in front of her, with his guard down like a normal teenager, his hair and clothes in disarray, savoring the moment and not minding anything else as he made out with the only girl who could turn him like this.
Seeing her boyfriend in that state made the room hotter than it already was. And it was turning her on so freaking much, especially when she knew it was no other than her, Mouri Ran, who was causing him to be this way.
Shinichi slightly tugged the hem of Ran’s shirt. By this time, her white polo shirt was not anymore tucked inside her skirt. Ran’s brain had already given up control over her faculties, and her hands now had a mind of its own. One hand grabbed Shinichi’s hand touching her back, in order to guide it to her front. At first, Ran felt Shinichi’s hand hesitate under her own from this sudden bold gesture on her part, but eventually he complied. Now, Shinichi’s hand was settling on the side of her stomach. With every kiss, tilt of head, and gasp for air, his hand would travel her delicate skin half a centimeter north.
Shinichi continued moving his hand upwards, massaging Ran’s skin until he felt something lacy at the tip of his thumb. He clearly recognized what it was. Slowly, he opened his eyes to look at the girl breathing heavily in front of him. Without saying anything, he stared at her eyes pleadingly, raised his eyebrows with a matching bob of the head, as if requesting for her permission to continue. With her half-opened mouth and impious gaze, Ran nodded faintly, and with this, he fully understood that she meant it was okay to proceed.
And so he did.
Still maintaining their ardent eye to eye contact, he snaked his hand inside the lacy fabric…slowly….
Until they heard footsteps and humming faintly approaching.
One.
Two.
Three.
It took three seconds for them to finally realize everything.
Crap! That’s Sonoko!
The eyes of the two, which were filled with desire seconds ago, now mutually screamed panic. They had no excuse if someone, moreso Sonoko, saw them like this. With their appearance – Shinichi’s disheveled hair and swollen lips, his blazer scattered on the floor, Ran’s wrinkled and untucked shirt, and that fresh bite mark near her collarbone – Sonoko would obviously know what’s up. Ran, in that moment, wished she could teleport to the bathroom and hide in one of the stalls to fix herself. But she had no time to make such wishful thinking. She needed to fix herself fast or else Sonoko would witness them in this awkward situation. As swift as the wind, Shinichi withdrew his hand from under Ran’s shirt, released the trapped Ran, and backed two steps away from her. He hastily combed his hair with his fingers using the reflection of the window beside him as his mirror. Ran, on the other hand, frantically smoothed out her creased white shirt and tucked its hem under her skirt. Thankfully, the mark Shinichi left on her neck could be covered by her school uniform if fully buttoned. Afterwards, Ran repeatedly slapped her cheeks with her two hands in attempt to regulate her breathing and regain her composure. At that time, Shinichi had already fixed himself and was wearing his blazer once more. He picked up the English book and the handkerchief on the ground, then tiptoed to Ran to hand her the latter. Shinichi smiled and gave her a quick forehead kiss before finally walking out to greet their other friend. Funny how they did all of this in ten seconds or less.
Shinichi emerged first before Sonoko could even reach the aisle where the two hid. Carrying with him the English book, he greeted Sonoko as casually as possible. He didn’t look her in the eye. He just wanted to reach their table before their friend could make sense out of his flushed cheeks and plumper lips. When he passed by Sonoko, he lowered his head a little, licked his lips and pursed it together in order to conceal any hints of his previous, erm, activity with Ran.
Upon reaching his seat, Shinichi took a deep breath, stared into space for a few seconds, then turned his gaze to the direction of the shelves. Sonoko’s attention was already on Ran, who had emerged from the shelves shortly after he did. The two girls stood at the edge of the row of shelves near the card catalog, and Sonoko was gleefully narrating something to Ran, but Shinichi couldn’t understand what it was. However, he believed it was safe to assume that Sonoko had no slightest clue of what just happened, as she was so engrossed telling a story to Ran, who was only pretending to listen.
Shinichi’s eyes reverted to the shelves. He blinked.
“Over there, a while ago, Ran and I were…”
He stopped his thoughts and shut his eyes. He needed to get his shit back together and resume with his work. He hoped, though, that he would be able to concentrate.
Sighing one last time, he opened the textbook and began answering.
----
Shinichi finished both English and Chemistry exercises in half an hour. The sun had almost set and the sky had already turned wine red, signifying that it was almost evening. The temperature had now dropped a bit but nevertheless it was still warm. While Shinichi was focused on the exercises, Sera and Sonoko were busy chatting with each other, and at some point the librarian even approached them to shush them. But Ran, during the whole time, was just staring blankly at the pile of books in front of her, as if in a trance. Sera noticed her unusual silence, so she interrupted Sonoko’s talk and waved her hand in front of Ran’s face across the table to ask her what was wrong. With that, Ran snapped back to reality.
“It’s nothing, Sera-san!” she exclaimed. Sera wasn’t convinced, so Ran struggled to find an excuse. “Uh…I’m just hungry,” she retorted.
Sera took her answer well after noticing her own hunger herself. “Come to think of it, my stomach is rumbling, too. But I think Kudo-kun is already finished so we’re going to eat ramen soon!”
True enough, Shinichi had already stacked all textbooks together and had placed them in the returning rack while the three girls were conversing. This signaled the others to pack their stuff and clear the table. Slowly but surely, Shinichi walked towards Ran as she was closing her bag. Once he was beside her, he cleared his voice.
“You okay, Ran?” he asked.
Ran looked at him. Streaks of red color on their cheeks resurfaced.
“…Y-yes,” Ran responded shyly. Their gazes locked one more time. From each other’s eyes, they saw the events from earlier flash back.
Yet instead of looking away, they both smiled.
“Ooohh would you look at that! Ne, did something happen while I was away??” Sonoko suggestively raised her eyebrow at Ran and Shinichi.
“What are you talking about!” Ran defended as the four walked out the door. Sera and Sonoko continued to tease Ran while Shinichi kept a disinterested face behind them, but his blushing cheeks betrayed him.
After they stepped out of the room, the lone librarian stood up from her station and went to the door. Watching the group from a distance, she gave a particularly long look at the unsuspecting Shinichi and Ran. The corner of her lips tilted up to form a smirk, and she shook her head left and right as she observed the four students disappear into a corner at the end of the corridor.
“These young people…” she mumbled before closing the library door.

Emogust 2019 - 22.08.|First Time
„What are you going to do now?”, Haibara asks.
They are at the police station again. The news hasn’t broken yet, but the Black Organisation is down. The coup worked. They did it. Well, the last part was mostly the doing of Hattori and his colleagues, and the FBI, but Shinichi knows they all mostly count it as his success. They are probably right in that, but he doesn’t feel like bragging about it, not like he did when he was still a teenager.
“Well”, Shinichi says, “there’s probably gonna be a press conference soon and we’re gonna have to tell the whole story.”
He looks at her and wonders if that is what she is worried about. “You’re still okay with what we agreed on, right?”
Haibara meets his eyes. “You know I’m sure about that.”, she says quietly, “I’ve always wanted it to be that way, you know that.” She makes a short break. “As long as you are willing to lie about that.”
Shinichi sighs. “We talked about that. It’s for the best. I’m not gonna tell.”
“I know.”, she says. “But you don’t want to lie anymore.”
She’s right. She knows him too well. But this is a whole different story.
“I’ve got all the important parts down. You are Ai Haibara, a child that was pulled into the Black Organisation against her will because of her parents. Her parents are dead so she was raised in the Organisation. However, she decided to flee with me and helped bring down the Organisation ultimately. There’s no lie in that.”
“I guess not.”, Haibara says.
Shinichi reaches down to ruffle her hair. He loves that he can do that now—he’s been permanently big for about a week now and he absolutely loves it.
She gives him a death glare and it melts the soft worry of her face. Shinichi is glad.
“You’re avoiding my question.”, Haibara says and gets her hair out of his reach.
Shinichi frowns in confusion. “What question?”
“What are you going to do now?”, she repeats, her eyebrows furrowing in impatience, or maybe just annoyance.
Shinichi blinks. “I just told you, there’s gonna be a press conference, and then the trials I guess…”
“Not that stuff.” She makes a dismissive gesture with her hand. “I mean what are you going to do, now that you’re free and all?”
Shinichi stares at her. “I- I don’t know.”
-
The question follows him around. It’s not surprising—really it’s all there is to ask, now that all is said and done, even if the reporters might have a slightly different idea.
It’s not that he hasn’t thought about it at all—but not in terms that seem real. It has always been some kind of parallel ubiverse, where he can be normal again and slip back in his old life—finish high school with Ran and Sonoko, maybe go to college, and then? He’s always wanted to open his own agency, but now, everything just wasn’t as easy.
Ran and Sonoko had long since finished high school, and if he had wanted to go to college he would be almost finished by now. He didn’t even have a high school degree! But even apart from that—returning to his old life was clearly impossible when everyone else had moved on from it. All of his old classmates had long since moved on and where building their own lives, Ran included. And besides, the more he thought about it, the more he realised he barely had had any connection to them anyway. Sure, he had been friendly with some of them, but he had barely had any friends per se. When he had first disappeared, Ran was the only one that had cared enough to make a fuss about it, her and maybe Sonoko. It was kind of frightening to realise that he had had more friends when he was Conan than when he was himself.
His thoughts swerve to Ayumi, Genta, and Mitsuhiko. They seemed to still be on the detective train when he saw them the other day. He admits to himself he is a little bit proud. They are smart kids and they could be good someday. He’s almost a little sad he doesn’t have a legitimate reason to go talk to them—maybe Haibara will be able to reconnect to them, then he could at least hear about what they are up to. The thought saddens him, but he doesn’t quite know why.
Aside from Ran and Sonoko his only other close friend had been Hattori. Shinichi is glad to have him back, glad to know he has someone to have his back again, but Hattori has his own life, too. He’s with Kazuha, and he has his work, and on Saturdays he volunteers to teach little kids Kendo when he’s not too busy. It sounds like a good life. It takes Shinichi a few minutes to realise he’s jealous.
The press conference doesn’t exactly shake his thoughts because after trying to squeeze pages worth of terrible memories out of his brain (Shinichi tries to gloss over the worst parts—there’s some of his pain he needs to keep private) the question is there again.
“What are your personal plans for your future?”
Shinichi tries to stall for time. “Well, I’ve always been a detective.”, he says, because it’s true, and even after everything that’s happened, he doesn’t want to give up on that. Apparently, there is still a little idealist somewhere inside of him, longing to bring justice to people’s unjust deaths. “And when I started this case, I didn’t ever think it would take that long. I didn’t realise how big this was until I was in the middle of it and then I didn’t have a way out. So when I first started out with it I just assumed I would slip back into my old life. Going to school, being a teen detective… Obviously it doesn’t quite work out that way, so frankly I’m not sure yet. I don’t even have a high school diploma, I’m far behind other people my age, so I guess I’ll be trying to catch up.”
-
“Was it terrible?”, he asks Haibara after. She’s sitting outside the conference room, but she’s watched the whole thing. As a child, she doesn’t have to answer any questions herself.
“I thought you did well at the part where they tried to insinuate you abducted me from the professor’s house.”
“That’s not what they said.”
“They kind of did.”
Shinichi doesn’t try to contradict her any further. “What did you think about the part about my future plans?”
She gives him a look. “That’s the part you’re worried about? They asked you all kinds of questions about deeply traumatizing stuff!”
She’s worried about me, Shinichi realises. The sentiment warms his heart.
“I know, but I expected that. I had a strategy.”
“If you must know, it sounded a bit awkward, but mostly reasonable.”
Shinichi makes a non-committal sound. Even if she’s right, it doesn’t bring him any closer to answers.
“So…”, she says, “are you gonna make any life-changing calls?”
Shinichi squints at her, suspiciously.
“You know to tell some people you’re back before they hear it from the press, now that you’re officially allowed to?”
“I guess I should do that…”
“Yes you should”, Haibara says, “Besides, we kind of need a place to live. The FBI probably isn’t gonna kick you out right away, but at some point.”
“I have a house.”, Shinichi says, then he reconsiders. “Well, my parents have a house. I hope they still have it. They could have sold it.”
Haibara looks at him like that’s not quite the thing she was referring to, but eventually she just nods.
“Then you better find that out.”
They call Professor Agasa first. Shinichi still feels guilty for the way he and Haibara left the Professor all those years ago, even though it was for his own safety. They don’t need to worry about the number—Shinichi’s had it memorised ever since he was a little boy.
They put the phone on speaker. The professor answers on the fifth ring.
Shinichi feels his hands shaking, but his voice is surprisingly firm.
“Hi professor”, he says, “It’s Shinichi.”
“Shinichi?”, the professor asks, “I hope you’re not trying your hand at practical jokes again, Ayumi-kun, those aren’t things to joke about-“
“It’s us”, Haibara interrupts.
“Ai-kun?”
“Yes”, she says, “I am Ai Haibara,”, she lowers her voice, “also known as Shiho Miyano, or Sherry. Shinichi and I managed to bring the Black Organisation down.”
“Also, there is a mole on your butt.”, Shinichi says.
Haibara throws him a weird look.
“Shinichi! It really is you! I had my hopes but-“ The professor’s voice breaks and something in Shinichi’s chest does as well.
“Yes.”, Shinichi says. “We’re coming home, professor. We’ve done it. It’s finally over.”
It feels more real telling him than all the reporters.
Haibara looks at her watch.
“If you turn on the TV right about now, you should be able to get all the details.”, Haibara says. Her voice sounds strangely choked. Shinichi looks at her. Of course this is affecting her. The professor was the one that took her in when she didn’t have anybody. He had believed her, even before Shinichi did.
Haibara gives him her ‘Stop staring you creep’-look, but it’s not very malicious.
“Professor?”, Shinichi asks, “Can I- I mean is my- is my house still waiting for me?”
“Yes, yes!”, the professor hurries to answer, “Ran-kun has made sure someone was there to clean it—your parents didn’t quite want to give it up, I might have told them not to, but yes, it’s still there, and in good condition.”
“That’s good.”, Shinichi says. Suddenly he can’t wait to go. Go home. “C’mon Haibara, let’s go- we’ll come, alright?”
“Of course, Shinichi, Ai-kun, I’m so happy-“
“Me too”, Shinichi says. It’s true, He’s starting to feel it.
“Oh but Shinichi? Make sure to call your father. He’s been giving himself a hard time…”
Shinichi feels guilty thinking about his parents. He’s barely thought about them at all. But now, he just wants to get home.
“I will.”, he promises before saying good-bye. No, not good-bye. See you soon. Much different.
“Let’s go.”, he says to Haibara. “I’ll call my parents on the way.”
Things don’t turn out to be as easy. As soon as they try to leave the station, childhood services stop them. Apparently, they’ve been looking for Haibara all over the place.
Shinichi shots her a sideward glance. Of course, rationally, he is not a suitable care-giver for a twelve-year-old girl, no matter how much time they’ve spent on the run together. But at the same time, he can’t imagine being separated from her now—they’re family. They’ve been through so much.
Before he can even try to start to think of something to convince them, Haibara starts crying terribly. She hides herself behind him and clutches to his arm like it’s her lifeline while sobbing into his shirt hysterically.
Shinichi can tell her real crying and her fake crying apart pretty easily, but apparently the social worker can’t, so he does his best to play his part and try and comfort her. It’s like a weird game of good cop, bad cop.
In the end, they agree to let Haibara go home with him—but only as a temporary solution, until something else is figured out. And they are going to be checked on.
Shinichi’s fine with the checking. As for the temporary bit—they’re gonna work it out.
They even get a ride home, Megure puts a young officer up to the task. He’s only a couple years older than Shinichi, and he’s never met him before. Of course not. How would he?
Shinichi actually has to look up his parents’ phone number. He finds one on his father’s page—it’s for business contacts and connects him to the secretary, but Shinichi can convince her to interrupt his fathers frantic writing session, that is, without a doubt, a last minute effort to please his publishers.
It’s good to hear that some things haven’t changed.
The phone call itself is weird. It’s all emotional and stilted and his parents seem to blame themselves for so many things, which is just plain weird to Shinichi—he made his own decisions taking on that case. Hasn’t it always been this way? It feels weird to be confronted with their guilt now.
In any case, they promise to jump on the next flight. Shinichi doesn’t really know how to react to that, but at least he has about twenty-four hours time to figure that out. It takes some time to get to Tokyo from Los Angeles, no matter how many strings you pull.
The professor waits for them in the house. Shinichi is so happy to see him, even more than he knew talking on the phone and for a while, they just sit together and explain. The professor leaves them to settle in, eventually, and they start to take in the house properly.
It’s in a good state, like the professor said, well-kept, but clearly empty, and it has been for a while. Shinichi can barely detect any traces of the time when Shuichi Akai used to live hear disguised as Subaru Okiya, but the marks of his own time are just to clear. It’s not like he just left—his math homework isn’t still lying on his desk or anything, but there are just so many memories flooding his mind it’s almost unbearable.
Haibara strolls around more curious than anything. She’s been in here before, but she never lived here, so it must be different for her. She can still sense his discomfort, but she doesn’t say anything. They are good at leaving room for each other’s pain. Not in a bad way, it’s more like he feels he’s still allowed to feel it. She understands, at least a little bit. And in any case, her company helps ease his discomfort anyway. No matter how long this house has been his home, for the past four years, his home was Haibara.
They spent the afternoon bringing the little amount of things they own from the FBI apartment to the house. It’s not a lot, mostly Haibara’s lab utensils and the cat tree for a cat they no longer have, but it’s something to do. Eventually, they put sheets on in Shinichi’s room and the guest room and go to sleep. Tomorrow’s gonna be a new day. The first new day of their lives.
-
They first look at the media again the nest day at breakfast. The professor had the foresight to bring some food over for them, since their fridge is completely empty.
“Looks like everything’s going over pretty well.”, Haibara says, which is good coming from a chronical pessimist like her.
“No signs of anyone connecting you to Sherry?”
“No, but that can still happen.” Haibara clicks on another news side.
“Well, then we’ll deal with it when it comes to that.”, the professor says.
Just as he’s finished the sentence, Shinichi’s home phone starts ringing.
Three pairs of eyes stare at the receiver.
“I didn’t think that was still connected.”, Shinichi says.
“Your parents must have kept paying the bill.”, the professor muses.
Haibara just grabs the phone and picks it up.
“At the Kudou residence?”, she says, sounding much older than twelve.
Her eyebrows raise as she listens to whatever the command is, then she covers the mouthpiece with her palm.
“They are asking you for another interview.”
Shinichi frowns. “Didn’t I say everything there is to know at the press conference?”
“It’s a magazine called Red Hearts. Apparently, they want to ask their own questions.”
“That’s a weird name. Is it a true crime magazine or something?”
Haibara looks at him. “I’m pretty sure they mostly do celebrity gossip.”
Oh.
“Oh.”
Haibara gives him another look, then she pulls her hand off the mouthpiece again.
“I’m sorry, but Kudou-san isn’t available for interviews at the moment.”
And with that, she hangs up.
“Thanks.”, Shinichi says, but before he can say anymore, his phone rings again.
“You might want to unplug that”, the professor suggests.
-
After breakfast, Hattori calls. The call actually comes through, because unlike what feels like a million gossip magazines, Hattori calls his cell phone.
“Have you heard about Neechan?”, Hattori asks without a greeting. “I was so busy wrapping everything up, I only got Kazuha’s text this morning…”
“Ran?”, Shinichi asks, and feels fear growing in him, “What about her?”
“Reporters cornered her about your being back at her concert last night. I don’t think she’d seen the news yet, and she just collapsed.”
Shinichi feels his heart speed up.
“Is she alright?”
“She’s at the hospital now, but she’ll be fine. I think it’s some kind of stress-shock thing.”
“I see.”
Shinichi curses himself internally.
“Do you think I can-?”
He doesn’t need to finish his question.
“Only family’s allowed to visit right now. Everything else is too much stress.”
“Yeah, that makes sense.”
“Do you want me to come over?”, Hattori asks, carefully. He’s offering his comfort.
“No, that’s alright, you have your job to do.”
“If you’re sure.”
“Yes.”
Shinichi relays what happened to Haibara and the professor in short sentences.
“I should have called her right away.”
“You should have.”, Haibara says.
Shinichi sighs. He knows that’s who she meant the previous day at the police station, but to be honest, he doesn’t know what he could have said to Ran at all.
He had left her without an explanation, so shortly after they’d gotten together, and now she has her own life. She’s so successful (not that Shinichi’s surprised about that, she’s brilliant) and happy, probably. Coming back to that now doesn’t feel right. He doesn’t have a right to interfere with it.
“I didn’t want to mess her life up all over again.”, he says.
The other two just stare at him.
“Oh Shinichi”, the professor says, “that was gonna happen anyway, no matter what you did.”
-
His parents arrive in the early afternoon. It’s even weirder than the phone call, all messy and emotional.
They keep hugging him and promising to do better, to take care of everything and Shinichi isn’t quite sure what that even means. He’s glad to see them, but they’re just- so much and he isn’t sure what to do with all that affection.
And there is something else about them, the way they look at him.
Haibara of course doesn’t notice it anymore, having been there through all of it, and the professor has overlooked it quite easily. Other people have looked, of course, but it hadn’t mattered as much—they didn’t know him.
But with his parents, Shinichi could see their disgust at his mangled body, and their terror at the weakness in his legs and his occasional painful huffs. All the pills and the tests had taken a toll on him. Shinichi’s entire being freezes at the thought of those labs—but he’s come to be used to the side effects, or at least he can ignore them. Seeing other people’s reactions makes it worse.
Still, his parents offer their help readily, even desperately, and they get directed on dealing with the media—as in, actually dealing with it, beyond unplugging the telephone.
In the meantime, Shinichi tries to leave a message for Ran. He owes her something, an explanation at least, even if he wants so much more. He knows she still has the same phone number and he knows that by heart, so he calls her. She doesn’t pick up. She probably doesn’t even have her phone, a source of stress, and she’s in the hospital to avoid that. Shinichi still leaves a message, then he sets out to find another way.
He ends up finding a number for the band’s management on the internet.
He isn’t really surprised when Sonoko picks up.
She lets of her business greeting.
“Sonoko, it’s Shinichi.”
The other line is silent.
“Listen, I know I treated Ran terribly, ghosting her for all these years, but-“ He breaks. He can’t make excuses for himself. He knows why he did what he did, but it doesn’t make it a better thing to do.
“Anyway, I owe her an explanation at least, if she wants it. Please tell her that when she’s better.”
“I’ve seen the news.”, Sonoko says, and Shinichi understands that she understands, at least at some level.
“Yes.” He doesn’t know what to say to that.
“I’ll tell her as soon as she can have visitors.”
“Thank you.”, Shinichi breathes, the relief lightening his chest immensely.
“You better behave like a decent human.”, Sonoko says, and the tension is falling from her voice.
“Of course”, Shinichi says.
“I’m glad you’re still alive, jerk.”
With that, she hangs up.
-
Shinichi doesn’t hear from Sonoko or Ran for the next couple of days. His parents dodge questions about her for him and sick the police on reporters tenting in front of the house.
Hattori comes by, as well as social workers to check up on Haibara.
The professor and his parents join forces with her to get them both to therapy, and Shinichi can’t find a reason to argue.
Someone starts an online petition for him to get a high school diploma in recognition for his service to public security, which of course, makes no sense whatsoever, since those things are completely unconnected.
He actually gets a tentative offer to work for the Public Security Bureau from Hattori’s boss as soon as he’s recovered, but Shinichi declines. If he can help it, he will never hunt an evil organisation again.
“I’ll stick with the regular murders.”, he says, which earns him a horrified look by his mother.
“I’ve always been a detective”, he tells her, later, “I couldn’t stop if I wanted to.”
She smiles and reaches to straighten his hair.
“I know, Shin-chan. Can you just try and never get in danger again?”
“I’ll try.”
Truthfully, he’s almost surprised he hasn’t run into a dead body yet. They still follow him around, even after all these years.
If he was in any way superstitious he might think the thought jinxed him, because the very next day, after therapy, he and Haibara try to do something normal for once and get hot chocolate (he’s not allowed to have coffee anymore, it makes the shivering worse) a guest drops dead in the café.
Shinichi solves the case and Megure comes to talk to him afterwards.
“My superiors and I had an idea, concerning your situation right now…”
Shinichi asks to think it over.
-
When Ran calls, he doesn’t expect it. He honestly didn’t expect her to call him herself at all—he had been prepared for a message from Sonoko, or Hattori, maybe.
He’s actually expecting to hear back from Haibara when he needs to pick her up. She went over to the professor’s house to be reintroduced to the remaining Detective Boys and Shinichi is almost as anxious about it as she is.
He’s basically just staring at the clock waiting for her call. The circus has died down a little, and now Shinichi finds himself with more time at his hands then he knows what to do with. Most of it is occupied by therapy and doctor’s appointments to help with his arguably bad physical condition, but there still is too much calm to take in.
He doesn’t even look at the caller ID when he picks up.
“Do you need me-?”, he starts, assuming it’s Haibara.
“Shinichi.”, she interrupts him and suddenly his mouth is all dry.
“Oh, I thought you were Haibara.”, he says, a little nonsensically. “I was supposed to pick her up.”
He doesn’t really know why he explains himself.
“Ai-chan.”, Ran says, “I heard she was with you. I’m glad. We all thought she was dead.”
Too, is what she doesn’t say.
Haibara’s name sounds weird in her voice. Shinichi hasn’t heard it said like that in so long. He wonders if Ran finds it strange that he calls her by her first name.
“She’s a good kid.”, he finds himself saying.
“I know.”, Ran says. He almost forgot she knew Haibara, too.
“Listen, Ran”, he says, determined, not so sure what for.
“I did some things to you that aren’t excusable and nothing I can say can make them undone.”, the sentence comes out too fast, to rapid. He wills himself to slow down. “But I did have my reasons. If you want to know them, you have a right to.” He stutters. “I guess what I’m saying is, I owe you an explanation. Only if you want it, of course.”
Ran sighs through the line. There is something else. Shinichi thinks she might be crying, but he can’t be sure.
“Are you okay?”, he asks hesitantly.
“I’m- this is just a lot.”, she says.
“I understand completely.”, Shinichi says, but he is still disappointed. He wants to see her so bad.
“No, wait, I still want to talk to you.” She hesitates and Shinichi’s hear soars. “Can you meet me tomorrow?”
-
Shinichi doesn’t tell anyone about the meeting beforehand. He probably should, but he just can’t bring himself to. Every time he tries to bring up the topic, something stops him. And then it’s time to go.
So when he sits down at the small bar Ran picked out, nobody knows what he is doing. It’s a strange bar. He seems to be the only customer, but he’s also here quite early in the day, not really the best business time for bars.
There are billiard tables in one corner. Shinichi wonders if Ran plays. The old man behind the counter takes his order and Shinichi flips over the card looking for non-alcoholic options (alcohol also doesn’t mix well with his body), landing at chocolate ice cream. Well, why not.
Ran arrives only a few minutes after him.
They stare at each other for a second.
“It’s private here.”, Ran says, obviously feeling the need to explain the strange meeting place, “no paparazzies, no dead bodies. Hopefully.”
Shinichi smiles a little, eyeing the old man. “I really do hope so.”
They sit down.
“How are you doing?”, Ran asks, like they are just casual acquaintances catching up. Her eyes slide over his mangled body.
Shinichi shrugs. “I’m getting better. Lots of physical therapy, and other therapy and special diets.” His hands tighten. “I’m probably going to get a cane.”
“I see.”, Ran says.
Shinichi meets her gaze. “Did you-?”
“I read the articles.”, she shivers, “About the experiments and-“
Shinichi can’t help but shiver as well. He averts his gaze.
“I’m sorry you had to read that.”
She shakes her head. “No, I’m glad. There is only one truth, right? Even when it hurts me.”
Shinichi has to look at her again.
“I’m sorry.”, he whispers, Even though he had sworn not to say those words. He doesn’t have a right to ask for her forgiveness. He doesn’t deserve it. But he wants it, so much.
“Tell me what happened.”, she says, her voice quiet.
Shinichi tells her.
He talks about it all. How it started, Conan, how he realised he had to disappear, all the times they almost got him and how they finally did. His escape. Haibara, and even her cat. She doesn’t interrupt him, not even once. He talks for hours. When he is finished, she is silent.
“I’m sorry”, he says again, and mentally scolds himself.
“No”, Ran says, “it’s just- I understand.”
He stares at her.
“I understand what you did and why. I know you. You had to do it. But I would have understood back then, too. You could have told me right away, when you told the professor. Or in Kyoto, or any of the other times. In London. I would have understood.”
“I-“ Shinichi doesn’t know what to say.
“I could have helped you—there are so many things in that story, if I’d known, it would have been so much easier—why didn’t you just tell me?”
His throat is dry, he’s not sure if it’s because of all the talking he did, or some other reason.
“I didn’t want to hurt you.”, he says, eventually.
Ran doesn’t cry. She doesn’t yell either. It scares him a little. He wants her emotions so he can deal with them, but she’s so calm.
“You just hurt me more, can’t you see that? I always knew you weren’t telling me everything and then you just disappeared, I worried so much, I cried all the time.”
“I know, I- it was wrong of me.”
She nods and looks at the floor.
Shinichi wants to see in her eyes and make it all right, no matter how.
I love you, he thinks and maybe it’s even more true than ever before.
He doesn’t. He has no right to say it, even less so, than ‘I’m sorry’.
“Ran”, he says, desperately, “do you want to never see me again? Because I would understand and I would, just tell me-“
She looks up and this time her eyes are full of tears.
“Of course not, you idiot.”
He feels his eyes fill with tears as well. It’s stupid—this is a good thing and he’s never been a crier, but he can’t hold them back.
She surges forward and hugs him so tightly he almost can’t breathe, but in that moment, he doesn’t want to. He just wants to be held by her forever.
“You’ve been my best friend for almost all my life”, she says against him, “I thought you were dead and I never got over it. I’m so glad you’re still alive!”
The tears come harder.
“I don’t deserve that”, he whispers in her hair, “not from you.”
“Oh Shinichi”, she says, “you are so much better than you know. You did so much good and even if you hurt me, you deserve all the things in the world for that.”

The Affair that Never Happened
Description: It was here third and final and final year at Seishun High School. A year that was coveted by most and looked back on with cherished memories. For this particular student though, she found herself in a peculiar situation that set a catalyst for things to come.
Rating: PG-13
Series: The Affair That Never Happened
Chapter 4: The Formation of a Plan
Couples: Eventual reader x Shinichi, unrequited reader x Chiharu
Author’s note: I know the chapter title isn’t interesting but I tried my best ;.;
When her alarm blared sharply in the silence of her room she was jostled from her sleep. Groggy and confused she felt around for her phone and without opening up her eyes she found the annoying device. With a few flimsy clicks of trial and error, she finally managed to press snooze. With a soft sigh, she snuggled deep into her sheets and cocooned herself inside their warmth. Drifting off back to sleep she made a mental note to definitely wake up the next time her alarm went off. It was too bad that she made that promise three more times before she decided to peel the covers off of herself and make an effort to get ready.
Once dressed she stared at herself in the mirror that hung on her bedroom door. Thankfully there were no bags under her eyes that indicated her lack of sleep and her complexion was as it had always been. It was a good thing she looked normal because the bizarre events of the night before made her feel at a little of a loss. It was equal parts amusing, stressful, and confusing. She sure played it like a cool cucumber when he walked in on her while she was bathing. BATHING! How was she supposed to face him today? Hopefully, he’d have been too drunk to even remember what happened the night before.
As she looked at her reflection she caught sight of the clock reflected in it as well. Noting the time she walked over to the box at the edge of her bed and scooped out a breakfast bar. Sometimes she’d go without breakfast, but when she was feeling particularly peckish but wanted to use as much time as she could to sleep in she would eat one of the many breakfast bars she had. Many people would urge her to wake up and have breakfast with them but it was either wake up at the ungodly hour of 6 or try and make it there and eat within a time-frame before seven, or whenever breakfast actually ended.
The only good thing that brought a smile to her face was imagining Kagari-sensei’s face when he woke up in a room that was a mix of pastels and yellows. The smile widened at the thought that he would look behind him and take a horrified gander at the backdrop of the bed. Perhaps it wouldn’t even be of dread. Wouldn’t it be a riot if that stuff turned that fickle robot on? That idea in and of itself had her laughing. With her mood brightened by that vivid imagination, she exited her room and finished the breakfast bar before she even made it to her classroom.
Upon entering the classroom her troubled thoughts melted away when she was greeted by Chiharu. Ah, today was going to be good. She was greeted right away by the boy she loved, so that MUST mean that it would only go uphill from there, right? Right?
“Can I talk to you for a bit? It’s about your math tutoring.” Before she could even respond he took her by her forearm and dragged her out of the classroom and into the semi-empty hallway.
“Can you not tutor me anymore or something?” She asked despite all her focus being directed to the warmth his palm radiated.
Oh listen to her, she sounded like a love-struck school girl. She never thought she’d sound like such a thing! With a dopey smile, she wasn’t able to get rid of, not that she wanted to even if she could, she followed him until they reached a small area where no other students could hear them. Despite this Chiharu began to whisper.
“What were you doing out so late last night?” He asked her with furrowed brows.
Oh, he sure was adorable wasn’t he? Wait. No! He saw her? When did he see her? When she snuck out or when she snuck in?
“I just wanted to let off some steam.” She explained. “So I met up with a friend and we hung out. I ended up falling asleep so I stayed out later than I wanted to. I promise I wasn’t planning on staying out that late. Besides I was safe as can be. See, I’m all good.”
To emphasize her statement she moved her arms about at her sides. Chiharu did not look amused. It felt good that he worried about her, a bit too good if she was being honest with herself. The little green monster inside her that had been silently stewing in the fact that he had begun to date someone else, and a teacher none-the-less, sucked up all the attention that he gave her. It caused her to feel special but she didn’t know why. It was hard to describe really. She was aware that he was dating someone, but it felt nice that he was putting his concern in her well-being rather than his older, prettier and more mature girlfriend. Whoa there girl, that was the green monster talking. And man was that little dude rude.
“Dude, seriously, I’m good.” She said and gave him a frivolous pat on the shoulder. “When did you see me anyways?”
She was curious, but her curiosity grew when his eyes ever so slightly drifted to the left. What was this? Was he out late into the night as well?
“Were you perhaps out having fun as well?” She inquired with a playful smirk and a quirked brow.
“I wouldn’t… Not in that kind of place…” He was blushing now and his words had come out awkward and rather frazzled.
“What… What kind of place?” She asked with a gentle cock of her head.
“Y’know… The place where you were.” He mumbled.
“You’re gonna have to be more specific because I was in more than one place yesterday night.”
“The… The love hotel.” He said and managed to control the gentle blush that stained his cheeks.
“Oh, there.” She said noncanonically.
Oh there! Of course, it had to be there! This was great. Peachy. Just flat out fucking amazing.
“You won’t tell anyone will you?” She asked, not even bothering to try and explain herself.
“I won’t if you promise not to do something so dangerous again! You could get expelled for such things! With the no dating rule, which you are breaking, you would add more of a sentence to your rap sheet if someone saw you!” He hissed.
“I’m not dating anyone.” She said as if that helped the entire situation.
“You’re gonna give a guy a heart attack at such a young age. You know this right? You are aware of how dangerous that is right?” He snapped at her but there was an exasperation to his tone that she couldn’t help but feel sorry for him. But not sorry enough to tell him the truth. He probably wouldn’t even believe it anyways, because to be fair it did sound a bit far-fetched. She watched him lean his body forward so his arms would be propped on the window-ceil.
“Don’t tell me you’re in love with me?” She couldn’t help but tease him.
“Why would I be in love with you?” He asked, a mixture of disgust and confusion written on his face as he looked up at her.
Well, that hurt like a knife to the chest.
“Then my stalker, maybe?” She asked, her smirk still present.
“That’ll be a very hard no.”
“Then what were you doing out late at night?”
He didn’t have to tell her, but it would make things fair.
“Why are you two not inside the classroom?” A new stern voice sounded from behind them.
“Making out.” “Sorry, sensei, we’ll go back now.” The two of them responded together.
The expression in response to her comment made her laugh. Fingers pressed gently against her lips she looked back and forth between the two of them. Chiharu, looked to her with his mouth agape and Kagari-sensei looked ready to smack her if violence against students was allowed. She didn’t bother telling them she was kidding this time and instead skipped into the classroom.
Also, how dare Kagari-sensei judge her even for a second when he got so wasted he threw up on her. Oh how she wished she could humiliate him with that fact, she steamed while she took her seat. Shit! She was supposed to text Akira that she made it home safe.
“Stupid, stupid, stupid.” She muttered to herself and gently slammed her forehead against the desk. She quickly and very discreetly texted her friend that she indeed made it home safe but something happened that made her completely forget to text him that she had. Letting him know that she would tell him all the details later on that day.
It was then that she noticed someone else had texted her. Someone whose number she didn’t know. With slow movements, she lifted her forehead off the desk to look at her homeroom teacher. He was also looking at her when she did this and it freaked her out so much she sat up straight in her seat. Did… Did he know too?
Dread anchored her heart in her stomach and bile climbed up her throat as she let the thought sink in. Oh no. Oh God no. Oh hell no! Another slam of her forehead against her desk. She didn’t care that her fellow students were looking at her with quizzical expressions. She had bigger problems. Problem Uno: She was about to barf that delicious breakfast bar right up. Problem Duos: If he remembered then it was goodbye school and hello shame. Problem Tress: It would break her father’s heart.
“{Last Name}-san, would you please reframe from making a scene?” The sigh that spoke volumes of disappointment was what almost sent her over the edge.
“But scenes are what I’m good at.” She played it off as a joke and sat up.
Back to the blasé attitude, she was known to have. It would do her no good speculating. Even if he did know it was her he had no proof and she could just play dumb. Well, that wasn’t a wonderful idea since anyone would believe whatever perfect Mr. Robot-Sensei said. Damn! What WOULD she do if he figured it out? This time she reframed from slamming her forehead against her desk but she allowed her lips to curl into a frown when Kagari-sensei looked away. He gave her one final exasperated look and told her, “This is a school, not a tv drama. Act your age, please.”
“Righty-roo.” She smiled up at him.
Well, that garnered her a glare. He didn’t bother to give her a response and instead made his way back to the front of the classroom. A little into the lesson, when she knew he was too busy to pay attention to her, she peeked at her phone that was inside her desk. With slyness that any good spy would possess she read the message on her phone.
“Hello, I can’t seem to remember your name, but I remember bits and pieces of last night. One of those memories was of me ruining your cardigan. I will have it cleaned by tomorrow. Would you mind meeting up with me so I can give it to you? I would also like to properly apologize to you in person.”
Ok. Ok. Ok. Ok. She wasn’t freaking out at all. Nope. Not a bit. He didn’t remember her, so that was good. Bad news, he wanted to meet her and she definitely wanted her cardigan back. Her stomach churned and she felt a cold sweat begin to coat her skin. Heartbeat increasing and head buzzing with a tickling sensation, she knew she needed to calm down first before she could devise any sort of plan. But how was she supposed to calm down? Any rational person would know that this situation was anything but calming!
“{Name},” her classmate whispered to her. “Are you okay? You don’t look too good.”
Oh good. She looked as horrible as she felt. And it wasn’t as if she could excuse herself because if she even suggested such a thing she had the feeling Kagari-sensei would assume she was lying. He really didn’t have much faith in her, did he? A self-deprecating laugh bubbled up her throat but she was successfully able to thwart it before it passed her lips.
“I’m fine.” She responded with a small smile.
“If you say so.” Her classmate mumbled, obviously still worried at the blatant lie.
“If you have something to say while I’m in the middle of teaching it must be very important,” Kagari-sensei said, his voice overbearing and grating.
“I’m not feeling well and she was just worried about me.” She found herself saying in a defiant tone. “I was about to ask you if I may so kindly be excused to the nurse's office.”
Perhaps that wasn’t the best tone to take with him in that very moment but a girl can only take so much rudeness. Granted she was talking while he was teaching, so maybe she deserved some repercussion but she didn’t deserve to be talked to like she just ruined his life. In fact, if SOMEONE hadn’t thrown up on her she wouldn’t be in her current state of turmoil.
He looked down at her and the tension in the room rose to a suffocating degree as they continued to stare at one another.
“You may go.” He almost spit out those words as his eyes flashed with a look that told her he absolutely did not want her to. “Since it seems that my teaching for today won’t help you.”
His eyes had gleamed over her opened binder, which remained unmarked from that day’s lesson. She didn’t know why but she felt like he was calling her an idiot.
“Yes, I doubt it will.” She responded calmly as she packed up her belongings and left the classroom with grace.
But when she shut the door behind her and made her way slightly down the hallway she slammed her fist against the wall. The pain that sparked from her knuckles traveled up her arm and the back of her neck before it left her brain tingling. It was a good distraction and it helped ebb away the anger that boiled inside her.
“I can’t wait for you to be groveling at my feet tomorrow. Begging for forgiveness for such “disgraceful” behavior.” She roared silently as she pulled her fist away from the wall.
When she looked at her fist she was pleased that no skin broke, but there would definitely be bruises the next day if the redness that burned her skin meant anything. Once she entered the nurse's office she was surprised that there was no one there. Not even a student was asleep in the few sickbeds that aligned the walls. Using her alone time to good use she plopped rather unladylike on one of the beds and whipped out her phone. She spent her free time finding a place near a university she would claim that she went to.
“We could meet up at the new café that opened up near my University.” She texted him and sent him the address of the café as well. “And I will accept apologies in a cup of coffee and a sweet treat.”
The café had been a tempting sight when she looked up its information on her phone. It was a calming place with brown, black, and cream undertones that were derived throughout its furnishings and wall decor. It probably smelled of cinnamon and pastries. A comforting smell indeed. As she stared up at the ceiling she went over her plan. She’d go out tonight and buy a wig, one that might be pricey but would definitely look believable. She’d even find a good makeup tutorial video before-hand and buy the makeup needed to contour her face to look like someone else’s. He’d never know it was her. She’d even make her voice higher or lower in pitch so he wouldn’t be able to catch onto her lie. And once she got her cardigan back she’d never need such tricks again.
“Well, here’s to hoping anyways.” She muttered underneath her breath as she shut her eyes.
She had barely gotten much sleep the night before and the bed was far more comfortable than one would assume. Treating it like her own bed, she snuggled deeper into the mattress and wrapped the blanket snuggly around her. By tomorrow night this whole nightmare would be over. At least, that’s what she told herself as she fell into a dreamless slumber.

Tabula Rasa
Detective Conan & Magic Kaito Characters: Shinichi/Kaito Words: 3000 ish Chapter: (1) ... (12) (13) (14)
Shinichi always finds his neighbour weird. But he didn’t expect to find his neighbour lying on a patch of grass and donned in Kaitou Kid’s costume, too.
Kuroba didn’t lie; the Ramen was indeed splendid and the dumpling didn’t disappoint. And he didn’t lie when he said he knew the Ramen restaurant too, so well that the owner came over specifically to greet Kuroba when they entered and offered both of them an extra serving of char siew on the house.
Shinichi wasn’t sure, but for the first time he had a feeling this special treatment had nothing to do with Kuroba’s charm. The interactions between Kuroba and the employees during the whole dinner felt real, and rather than being in a restaurant, Shinichi thought he was eating in a private home instead.
But Shinichi wasn’t complaining. He liked the liveliness, which was similar to what he'd missed experiencing in Cafe Poirot when he was Edogawa Conan. Only this time he was in his true self, and also because he was with—
He had no idea where that last thought came from, and he refused to finish it.
After the dinner and a long chatty goodbye, they both exited the restaurant, the next idea of destination unknown to Shinichi. Kuroba then asked if Shinichi drove, which he did, and that answer seemed to give Kuroba a new idea for the night as he began leading Shinichi somewhere else besides home.
They stopped outside a shop that sold gardening supplies.
Shinichi glanced at Kuroba’s back as they entered the store. “Why are we here?”
“To save your plants, duh.”
Shinichi frowned. “I—”
“Hello Kaito-kun!” The store owner greeted as she stood up from her chair behind the counter. “The usual?”
“Not today,” Kuroba said, before jabbing a thumb at Shinichi. “Somebody is trying to murder his plants and I’m not going to sit back and watch. Do you have any big pots for repotting Sweet Potato Vine?”
Shinichi glowered, not sure to be annoyed at Kuroba’s unnecessary remark or impressed at his abundance knowledge for plants. But Kuroba didn’t seem to care, or notice, as he disappeared to the other section of the store with the owner, their chatters grew to murmurs that Shinichi couldn’t hear. When Shinichi tried to follow through the aisle, Kuroba was already back with two pots under both of his arms.
Kuroba set them on the cashier counter before gesturing Shinichi forward. “You’re paying for these.” He grinned.
Shinichi grudgingly pulled out his wallet, though he returned a smile when he faced the owner to pay for the items. At the last minute, Kuroba added a pruner tool and a small spade during the checkout.
They carried a pot each on their way out.
“I have a question,” Shinichi said as they were finally heading to his car for home.
Kuroba glanced over. “Hm?”
“Did you previously live around here?” Shinichi asked. An explanation for his guess wasn’t necessary, but Kuroba’s lack of reply tempted Shinichi to fill in the silence between them. “The Ramen place, the gardening store... They’re not close to our district, but you seemed like a regular customer to them.”
“Yeah.” Kuroba eventually nodded. “I used to.”
“Why did you move?”
On the cue, a loud “Bong” echoed through the streets.
Shinichi halted in his steps.
“Bong.”
He turned
“Bong.”
Is that the clocktower?
Most of the tower was blocked by the surrounding buildings, but the tip and the face of the clock could still be seen against the dark sky. The structure was nothing in comparison to the Big Ben in London, but the clock lights did help to close the gap and make it looked just as majestic and iconic.
Just like the first time he’d seen it up close in the helicopter ride.
Being in the helicopter, Shinichi wasn't aware of the directions and didn’t know the clock tower was actually around this area—which was also the place Kuroba used to live, as mentioned. But now that he did, he wondered if it was a coincidence, or if there was any relation to why Kuroba—Kaitou Kid—decided to not only steal, but save it.
Shinichi turned back.
Though Kuroba had also stopped beside him, he was still looking forward.
And his face seemed too blank for Shinichi’s liking.
But in a blink, some life returned to his eyes, and he turned towards Shinichi.
“Tabula Rasa,” he said, breaking the odd silence and the lingering echoes from the clock tower’s chime.
“…Tabula Rasa?”
“It means a blank slate. Like a moment after a new birth," Kuroba said, turning away as he began walking again. Shinichi quickly followed.
There was something heavy at the end of Kuroba's sentence, like it wasn't completed...
“And?” Shinichi prompted, trying to test his luck.
“And that’s my answer," was all Kuroba replied.
----
By the time they reached Shinichi’s parked car and drove back home (with the two pots sitting in the back seat), Kuroba had returned to his… normal self. But it wasn’t entirely normal when the first few minutes of the ride was silent, though eventually it was Kuroba that first broke it by commenting about some insignificant things before he started talking about what he was going to do with Shinichi’s plants; and for once Shinichi couldn’t be more grateful for the two pots and tools he was forced to buy, just so they had a safe, neutral and stable topic for the rest of the ride.
“And also, you shouldn’t water it too much either,” Kuroba continued as they got off the car, brought the pots into Shinichi’s house and to the backyard. “It’s like spoiling a kid. It’d grow up bad.”
“Nice analogy,” Shinichi said, placing the new pot beside the old one.
“Huh,” Kuroba looked amused. “Never knew you’d appreciate anything coming from me.”
Shinichi thought there wasn’t a need to correct Kuroba about that. Instead, he focused all his energy on transferring the two potted plants with Kuroba’s guidance, which was also a good distraction that helped him temporarily forget about Ran’s return, the hospital conversation, and all the burning questions Shinichi wished he had answers to, but not at the expense of having to see the sadness in Kuroba’s face…
“Doooone!”
Shinichi glanced up, watching as Kuroba wiped his forehead with his sleeves. He didn’t need to be a scientist to know that human doesn’t glow, no matter the circumstances, but strangely, under the dark night sky with little light around them, Kuroba seemed to be—
“Hm, thanks.” Shinichi eyed down at the plants in front of him.
“No probs.”
Then, Kuroba continued to share more tips about the plants, something along the line about how to protect the plant during harsh sunlight, but Shinichi couldn’t really hear his words or voice anymore, not when the only thing that echoed in his ears were his slightly loud and erratic heartbeats, thumping faster and faster as he wondered about the cause of it.
----
“Kudo!”
Shinichi turned, instantly noticing the dark-skinned man among the crowd of people loitering at their agreed meeting venue. He closed the distance by jogging over to Hattori as well.
“Sorry for being late, there was a last minute meeting.”
“Nah, I just reached too,” Hattori said before slapping a hand over Shinichi’s back. “Boy, it’s been so long!"
Long, according to Hattori’s dictionary, was akin to several years, even though it was technically only several months since they last met. But Shinichi wasn’t going to say otherwise, given that the meeting was indeed rather short, and it was for work purpose too; he’d gone to Osaka to solve a missing case that involved a resident from Tokyo.
Shinichi smiled and glanced at his watch. “It’s an odd timing, but do you want to eat? I know a place that sells good Ramen and dumplings.”
“It’s really an odd timing for something so full,” Hattori said as he rubbed a hand sheepishly behind his back, “and I already promised I’m going to bring Kazuha to try the curry rice later for dinner.”
“Oh, Toyama is here in Tokyo too?”
“Yeah,” Hattori pursed his lips, looking somehow reluctant to explain the reason why. And he didn’t.
Then again, it really wasn’t hard for Shinichi to figure out himself.
Ran.
“How about giving me a tour around your new place?” Hattori grinned, slicing away the mild tension as he wrapped an arm around Shinichi’s shoulders. “You didn’t have a house-warming party, so now’s the chance.”
Shinichi hesitated, but it wasn’t because he wanted to hide his pathetic kitchen, messy study room or the sad little backyard with just two (albeit healthier-looking) potted plants. Instead, what flashed across his mind was Kuroba, his pesky doves, and his beautiful rose garden.
That was how it was to live beside an infamous and wanted thief, perhaps.
“Well…”
“C’mon, I already had enough of Tokyo's sight-seeing,” Hattori grumbled. “Just entertain me, would ya.”
“Fine, but—”
Before Shinichi could say another word, Hattori was already dragging him towards the direction of his car.
----
The first thing Shinichi checked when he got out of his car was Kuroba’s house (which was actually like all the other times, even without having Hattori or anyone around). But the sun hadn’t set and it was hard to tell if Kuroba was at home with no lights being on, so Shinichi had to check his mailbox. The lack of the dove’s presence and shit-stain didn’t help to confirm Shinichi’s guess either.
“Damn, it looks just as big as your old one.” Hattori gaped before skipping towards the front door.
Pushing his worries away at the moment, Shinichi followed.
The things in Shinichi’s house were pretty much self-explanatory, and joining with his lack of commentary talent, the "house-tour" was summed up in less than five minute. But Hattori still seemed pretty impressed, like usual.
“Nice place. Highly recommended. Will definitely visit again.” Hattori gave a thumbs up.
Shinichi shook his head. “You sure you don’t want to go somewhere else?” he suggested.
“Nah, oh wait. I haven’t seen your backyard.”
“Uh—”
Before Shinichi could even blink, Hattori had already teleported himself out in the backyard.
“Wow, you have plants,” he said aloud.
Sighing, Shinichi followed as he passed through the kitchen. “They are—”
Hattori suddenly turned, looking over at Kuroba’s backyard. “Eh, your neighbour’s there too.”
Shinichi froze.
“Hello!” Hattori waved.
Oh God.
Shinichi stepped into his backyard and awkwardly turned to look over at Kuroba’s side.
Kuroba was waving back at Hattori with a watering can in his hand, and after putting it down by his rose plantations, he ambled over to the fence.
Shinichi pinched the bridge of his nose. And he’d thought Kuroba would be smart enough and go back into his house… He must have given him too much credit and overestimated how his two remaining brain cells would handle the situation.
“Nice to meet ya.” Hattori placed a hand over his chest. “I’m Kudo's best friend and greatest rival.”
“And his name is also Hattori Heiji,” Shinichi added. Not that Kuroba needed the information, but for the sake of formality… He gestured over to Kuroba. “And he’s my neighbour, Kuroba Kaito,” he said to Hattori.
Kuroba propped an arm over the fence. “Is it safe for me to say that I’m your best neighbour too?”
Shinichi sighed. “Ok, anyway—”
“Wait a minute.” Hattori frowned, his eyes suddenly turned all squinty as he surveyed Kuroba. “Why does it look so familiar…”
Kuroba blinked.
Shinichi was pretty sure his heart had stopped for a good two-seconds at least. “What?” he said, and it was already a miracle he didn’t stutter for saying that one word.
Hattori scratched his chin. “I’ve seen it before…”
“What are you talking about—”
“That shirt, ya.” Hattori pointed at Kuroba, “I’ve seen you worn it before.”
With how synchronised they were—both glancing down at the shirt, at each other, and then at Hattori at the same time—Shinichi and Kuroba could have won an award at the Olympics.
And not just them, Hattori should be awarded as the-most-observant-man in history too; it was indeed Shinichi’s shirt, the one he let Kaitou Kid wear on the night he ended up in his garden with a knife stuck in his waist.
“Uh.” Shinichi cleared his throat. “Yes, what a coincidence—that my neighbour has the same shirt as me.”
Kuroba had probably worked his two brain cells and figured it was better to not say anything, so he only added a laugh for effect.
Hattori raised an eyebrow. “Right—”
“Anyway, there’s nothing in my backyard besides the two plants, so let’s head back in,” Shinichi said, dragging Hattori towards the backyard door without sparing a glance towards Kuroba. Luckily, the feisty detective complied without any argument.
But getting into the kitchen wasn’t enough. After closing the door to the backyard, he pushed Hattori into the living room too.
“Where are you eating dinner with Toyama?” Shinichi asked, hoping to deflect any sort of conversation related to what happened fifteen seconds ago. “We can maybe hang out around there—”
“No, no.” Hattori waved a hand, his face turned slightly panicked all of the sudden.
Shinichi raised an eyebrow. It seemed like it wasn’t just him that was trying to do some form of distracting.
Hattori sighed. He rubbed a hand behind his neck. “Kazuha… She’s with Ran-neechan now.”
Oh.
“You do know that she’s back, right?” Hattori added.
Shinichi rubbed an eye. He was thankful, at least, that the aches in his chest had dulled so much to just a fluttering beat when he heard or thought of Ran these days. “Yeah, I know.”
Hattori frowned. “Why do I have this feeling that you know, but not at da’ same time?”
“I knew it through Shiho.” Shinichi explained, “But… I haven’t met Ran personally yet.”
“Yet.” Hattori leaned forward, looking as pumped as receiving a murder case. “Does that mean you are going to find her?”
Shinichi shrugged. “I’m not sure.”
Hattori’s face fell. “Well, I hope you do.”
Shinichi was tempted to give a nod just to assure Hattori, but he didn’t want to make any unconfirmed promises to anyone anymore. And worse, he feared Hattori would hold onto this thought and accidentally tell Toyama about it. And then Ran would know.
And if that happened, what should he do from there?
A buzz suddenly came from Hattori’s pants, saving Shinichi from having to continue his mind-mapping and figure what to reply.
After silently reading off the message from his screen, Hattori pocketed his phone. “I guess I should go now.”
Shinichi nodded. “Let me send you.”
“Nah, I saw a train station when we passed. I can walk.” Hattori patted Shinichi on the shoulder. “Besides, Tokyo isn’t that big, ya know. You should at least prepare your script before stepping out of your house every time.”
Shinichi gave a wry laugh.
But out of courtesy, Shinichi still walked Hattori out of his door and a little further down the street before heading back into his house.
Or not really.
Standing right next to his mailbox was Kuroba, with his chin on the palm of his hand as he watched Shinichi walking closer home.
“You haven’t answered my question,” he said out randomly.
Shinichi frowned. “I don’t remember any question.”
“So, is it safe for me to say that I’m your best neighbour too?”
It was absurd that he didn’t see it coming. Shinichi rolled his eyes. “What do you think?”
Kuroba grinned. “Yes?”
Shinichi didn’t answer. He spun on his heels and went for his front door, but just for the feeling of it, he peeped back over his shoulder at the last moment, to find Kuroba still standing at the same exact spot and looking at him too.
“…What?” Shinichi muttered when they made eye contact.
“Nothing,” Kuroba said, before dusting his hands and heading for his own house.
Shinichi bit his lip. He backtracked, and took a few steps towards Kuroba. “Wait.”
Kuroba stopped.
“Uh.” Shinichi unconsciously glanced at his mailbox.
Kuroba followed his gaze. “My doves didn’t shit on it this time.”
“Yes, I can see that.”
Kuroba then tilted his head, promoting Shinichi to fill in the answer rather than supplying any more. Or maybe because he couldn’t think of any other reason to explain why Shinichi asked him to wait too.
And truth to be told, Shinichi couldn’t find any other reason either—
“When are you planning to return my shirt?” Shinichi came up with this idea instead.
Kuroba looked down and pulled the hem of the clothes, contemplating. “Do you want me to take if off now?”
“Don’t,” Shinichi spat, which caused a grin to form on Kuroba’s face. Shinichi scowled in return. “Just give it back to me next time.”
“Ok. Is there anything else?
“No. I guess not.” Shinichi took a step back, and then another. “Bye.”
“Bye.”
“…Wait.”
Kuroba turned and flung his hands up in exasperation. “What now?”
Shinichi dug both hands into his pocket, balling them into fists. “Do you… I mean, are you free?”
“Why?”
“By any chance… Are you cooking later? Like fried rice?” Shinichi blurted, almost pathetically. “Can I pay you to cook an extra plate for me?”
Kuroba blinked, his brief annoyance gone like the wind. “I can do it for free,” he said, his whole face all smiley and bright. “But in exchange, you have to answer my question: is it safe to say that I’m your best—”
Shinichi sighed. “Yes, yes you are.”

Top 10 Otome Husbands
Tagged by two absolutely incredible ladies, @dear-mrs-otome and @saizoswifey!!!
Mitsunari Ishida [SLBP] - hahahahahahaha where the fuck do I even BEGIN. I don’t even KNOW what got me started thirsting over this precious blueberry but I remember being so impatient to finish toshiie’s route just so I could start it. and now here I am, in blueberry hell. he’s my best boy and I love him so much it’s stupid. I could write essays about this man and why he deserves the world (don’t worry; I won’t). plus! cross-dressing! my god it’s like the best two in one deal in the world for this bisexual ho!! in short, he’s. he’s so pretty. but even more importantly, he’s so fucking smart, he’s suffered so much, he cares so much more deeply than he lets almost anyone see, ever, and his relationship with his MC is one of the most deeply touching I have ever seen. WHAT A MAN HE IS.
Masamune Date [SLBP] - omg MY FIRST SLBP LOVE. oh my god how I scoured the ends of the internet when I first fell for him. his MS was my second and I fell fucking hard and then realized that he’s so hard to write in a seriously sexy way and realized there was NONE OF THE JUICY CONTENT I WAS SO THIRSTY FOR. but!!! he still makes me go fucking weak. that smile. my god. AND WHAT A ROMANTIC. he makes my heart go dokidoki like you wouldn’t believe. his dramatic end......... is the stuff of legends.
Oliver Knight [IkeRev] - okay. yes. I know he’s not even out yet. I know he’s not even close to being released. but everything about him screams “the mitsunari of ikerev“ and I want him to insult me every single day until he realizes he’s in love. then I want to watch him break (BECAUSE YOU KNOW THERE’S SO MUCH ANGST IN HIS BEING A PART-TIME BOY HOLY SHIT) so I can fuck the pieces back together with my love and affection. I want him so badly I could cry. plus he’s such a dom and I will fight anyone who argues with me about this.
Kenshin Uesugi [IkeSen] - haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahaha I was not expecting him to be on this list anD YET HERE WE ARE. this man has dragged me into his own personal hell and I live here now. wow. I DIDN’T THINK THAT HE WOULD MAKE ME FALL FOR THIS YANDERE ASS BAE SO FUCKING FAST Y’ALL READ KENSHIN’S ROUTE RIGHT THE FUCK NOW HE’S BASICALLY OVERTAKEN NOBUNAGA IN IKESEN WHICH I DIDN’T EVEN THINK WAS POSSIBLE????????? WHAT THE FUCK. WHAT THE FUCK!!!!
Edgar Bright [IkeRev] - Y’ALL. I had my sights on this snek from day 1 and I’m so fucking hype he’s next HE GOES DOWN ON MC LIKE A CHAMP AND YOU KNOW HE’S THE KINKIEST SNEAKIEST SLIPPERIEST LITTLE DEMON IN CRADLE AND I LOVE HIM. talk to me about my thoughts on his kinks and we’ll be there a while but we’ll all be happier for it in the end. my god. I want to watch this boy fall so hard he can’t get up anymore.
Chiharu Utsumi [ASA] - okay yes I realize he looks a bit like edgar fuck you I COULD GO ON FOR DAYS ABOUT HOW MUCH I LOVE CHIHARU. he’s the most mature, respectful kid, I stg. he comes off as so perfect. he’s an absolute ladykiller, he’s gorgeous, he’s great at soccer, is stupidly intelligent, interested in ASTRONOMY, wants to become a doctor because of his single mother because he cares so much about her and his family it kills me a little, he’s the smartest kid in school, and when he falls for MC, he falls fucking hard. and it’s the most wonderful thing to watch. I was first introduced to him in Shinichi Kagari’s route (my first otome route ever, nobunaga aside!), and was intrigued. then they released the special story and he captured my whole heart. favorite love365 boy now hands down. his stories are the only thing I’m willing to still spend coins on until they get rid of love choice and that’s saying a LOT.
Souji Okita [EOSCOL] - okay, if you haven’t read any of EOSCOL yet you are missing out. it’s angst and pain and history and smut and I love every second of it. if you like hakuoki, you’ll love it. that being said. Souji Okita is my best fucking boy in that story and as much as I love Takasugi, he cannot be beaten. he starts off literally by threatening to kill MC because he thinks she’s a spy and ends up falling fucking hard. I don’t know how much y’all know about his history, but. let’s just say he’s had it hard and he never expected to have the chance at love, let alone deserve it. if you like SAIZO, Souji is him but on the more deredere side of things once he falls for MC. what a man what a warrior what a legend.
Saeyoung Choi [MysMe] - my god. I love him so much. he’s so in love with MC in every damn route and it’s so painfully obvious and I say painfully because it is PAINFUL IT HURTS ME TO SEE HOW MUCH HE LOVES HER. he’s 100% my kinda guy. not only is he a tsun that shares my flirting style to a tee (flirt my heart out until it gets serious, then freak tf out), he’s suffered so much and I just want him to be happy. his coping mechanisms for the shit in his life are high-key mine, as well. also, he wears glasses!! my computer background features him and MC right now, and when hubs saw it he legit asked if it was us (he used to be a redhead like you wouldn’t believe). ALSO, NO ONE CALL TELL ME THAT HE DOESN’T LEAVE HER PREGNANT WITH TWINS IN THE AFTER ENDING FITE ME ON THIS I DARE U
Sasuke Sarutobi [IkeSen] - why does it seem like he’s on everyone’s list?? is he our village bicycle husband?? BECAUSE HE DESERVES IT. HE DESERVES TO BE ON EVERYONE’S LIST. he’s got literally the perfect sense of humor. I wanted his route yesterday. I love him so much so so so much and the fact that he’s an astro-physics grad is just the cherry on top because for some fucking reason I have a hard-on for physicists. ADD TO THAT MY MASSIVE MEGANE KINK, HIS INTELLECT, HIS STUNNING GOOD LOOKS, GENTLEMAN’S HEART, AND FLAWLESS SENSE OF HUMOR, AND HE’S PERFECT HUSBAND MATERIAL
Saeran Choi [MysMe] - ANOTHER BROKEN CHOI BOY. I collect them like succulents and cry, I guess??? and tho I do love all of his, uh, personalities, I’m particularly partial to ray. I just want to watch him break so MC can put him back together (A TREND YOU’VE NOTICED, I’M SURE, I like them either impenetrable and smirky or breakable puzzle tsuns). SERIOUSLY THO, this boy has had it so fucking hard and he deserves the absolute world where he gets to never be abandoned by any of the people he loves. ray in particular is such a fucking yandere because he’s been abandoned so damn often that it breaks my fucking heart when he just wants so badly to be loved. he’s also WICKED smart, which I am also always all over.
Honorable Mentions:
Keiichi “Byron” Tokiwa [SND] - if you like your men on the gay/bi side of things LIKE I DO get him he’s so fucking precious you won’t regret it I PROMISE)
Kiyonori Taishi [ASA] - honestly before chiharu and souji stole dominance away from him he was my number one otome man because he’s so so so sweet so long as you expect someone with some serious asperger’s syndrome / savantism. he’s amazing at history but he’s hopeless at the real world, including women, but once he falls for MC he falls so fucking hard and fights his every instinct to become a man worthy of her affections. he NEEDS MC in his life so so much and he knows how important she is to him AND SHOULD BE. ALSO? his romantic end has THE CUTEST CONFESSION I’VE EVER SEEN.
Also: Kyle Ash [Ikerev], Logan Bradley [LLH], Kirisato [DTL], Shigezane [SLBP], Shingen [SLBP]
Among SLBP NPCs: Toshihisa, Nobuyuki, Kaede, Toramatsu, Yasumasa, Kotaro, Masanori, Kanetsugu
Please note: With the exception of Mitsunari at the #1 spot where he deserves to be, none of these are in order. Choosing only ten was hard enough already. I refuse to make myself suffer even more. ALSO, I didn’t include non-playable NPCs or we’d be here all day.
I tag @be-my-prince because I want to see her answers to this! :D also @pseudofaux you should do yours too now that you’re no longer swallowed whole by family things!
#wow this took forever#but hey!#I actually managed to do a meme thing and talk about myself!#PROGRESS#tam talks

Are you up to some amazing character analysis of yours? Cause Shinichi's romantic development is something that fascinates me. He's grown so much, and he just seems so much more mature in the romantic sense than for example Heiji? or specially than Kaito. Don't get me wrong, they are all doofuses and kind of dorkish, but when it comes to this topic, Shinichi is certainly marriage material. He has shown that he can forget about a case because he was worried about Ran. I'm so proud of him~
(Have to use links for images cause I’m on my phone :c)Hello! Thank you for asking! You are right, he has a romantic development, just think about the fact that he’s the only one among the main characters that has actually confessed to his loved one. But you know what? This romanticism is not something new! A lot of people tend to think Shinichi became romantic only after a lot of chapters, and that at the beginning he wasn’t romantic at all; but that’s not true! Look at this:
http://imgur.com/jnXFu1Dhttp://imgur.com/NsD38shhttp://imgur.com/Ufzem8e
Let me remind you this cause it’s pretty important, we are told that Shinichi is in love with Ran before knowing she’s in love with him. Like, I read that a lot of people don’t like the fact that ‘it’s always Ran the one that thinks about Shinichi while he only cares about cases’ … excuse you?! Just go back to the first volume. All we have is Shinichi blushing cause he’s clearly in love with Ran. I’m not deducing it, he says it in his mind. Of course he would’ve never confessed to Ran like that cause he’s a teenage boy, but I like the fact that he’s so in love with Ran he thinks about confessing to her from the first chapter.
Another example, the Desperate Revival Arc. He asks Ran out and he brings her to a very expensive restaurant because he wants to confess his love to her in the same place his father asked his mother to marry him. Is that romantic? YES, yes it is. Or again, in the episodes after the Murderer, Shinichi Kudo Arc when Shinichi keeps holding Ran’s hand even when he turns into Conan because he had promised her he would do so. He cuts his jumper to keep holding Ran’s hand. Is that romantic? YES. Conan/Shinichi is doing everything to stay near Ran even when he’s Conan cause he’s fucking scared of losing her.
From the very beginning, he has true romantic feelings about Ran, so he hasn’t just become more romantic through the chapters, it’s just that in my opinion his thoughts became more mature. At the beginning it was just a 16-year-old nerd thinking about his crush, but after becoming Conan and realising there were some possibilities he could actually lose her he became more ‘serious’ about it.
I gotta quote this cause I think this is really powerful:“If I said how I feel about her, she would miss me even more… All this time, I’ve been breaking her heart by keeping her waiting, yet I still can’t appear before her eyes. I never want to see her cry anymore, even if it means I no longer exist in her heart. How immature of me, right?”Guys, this is true love. True love is wanting to see the person you love being happy, even if you are not the reason they are happy. Are we aware he was willing to disappear from Ran’s life in order to see her happy? That’s VERY mature of him to me. That’s not something a normal 17-year-old boy would say if he hadn’t had a big development. I know that then things go differently cause he confessed in London (and I cried) and now ShinRan’s apparently about to explode in file 1004, still he was ready to give up his happiness to save Ran’s.
So yeah, this is probably not what you expected and this answer is really messy but I hope you got my point! Which is yes, Shinichi IS a romantic character, despite what some people may think! We are all so proud of him ~

I've got a hard question for you! What would you say would be your gosho boys ranking from the one you like the most to the one you least like, and why? What is that you like the most and what do you not like about each of them?
Hi Anon!
Wow. That’s a really difficult question for me to answer because I love all of the Gosho Boys and I think that Gosho-sensei is just wonderful for blessing the fandom with four, smart, gorgeous dorks. It really breaks my heart to have to rank them, but here it goes…
*heavy breathing*
1. Hattori Heiji
Top spot goes to Heiji. It was hard to choose between him and Shinichi. They could’ve tied, but yeah I chose Heiji anyway. (I could imagine Heiji rubbing this in Shinichi’s face already. *Insert “WEST is the BEST” Heiji here*) Heiji won the top spot by a few points against Shinichi.
Just an anecdote:If this question was asked like a few years earlier, I could’ve picked Shinichi. Like, when I got into the fandom, I was a bigass Shinichi-biased DCMK fan. I was around 11 or 12 that time and all I ever talked about was Shinichi. I hardly paid Heiji any attention, to be honest. At around high school up to college, I was practically gone from the DCMK fandom. Like, I did some exploring in other fandoms and I just left for a while, kind of like a really long vacation. Anyway, I came back here after college and I’ve been drinking a lot of the Heiji appreciation juice.
I think the reason for this is because of the character development I witnessed in Heiji. (I’ve already stated this in one of my blog posts, “Heiji’s Character Development” ) I don’t think I could stress this anymore. Other than this, I’m just really drawn to the KazuHei couple recently and I love how Heiji’s being such a dork about his confession. It’s awfully cute and it’s bringing out a different side of him.
Also fun fact about me, I’m not a big fan of tsundere characteres. Especially guys who are a tsundere. IDK. They’re just not my cup of tea. Most tsundere characters are just too mean and disrespectful for me (*coughs* Uchiha Sasuke *coughs* Hyuuga Natsume. I could name more, but I don’t want to make this longer). Anyway, Heiji’s probably the only or if not, one of the few tsundere characters that I do like. Him and Vegeta (WOW THEY’RE BOTH VOICED BY THE AMAZING RYO HORIKAWA!).
Anyway, Heiji is a big exception to my dislike towards tsundere characters because even if he is a bigass tsundere, he doesn’t disrespect Kazuha. I mean, he argues with her a lot, yes. But their arguments are just about petty little things. By the end of the day, it’s just a KazuHei thing and no matter what happens, he’d always be by Kazuha’s side, protecting her always. I absolutely love how he’s protective of the women, especially when sneaky guys are trying to get their way to them. And it’s not just about Kazuha. Heiji’s also like that to Ran as well. I love this about Heiji because he may come across as arrogant and intimidating, but really, he’s a total nice guy. He’s the ideal boyfriend and ideal brother. (I honestly want to see more Heiji-Ran moments because he’s a really great bro to Ran but sadly, their dynamics is pretty underrated.)
What I also love about Heiji is that he isn’t the “safe” kind of person. He is impulsive and aggressive. It’s a bit dangerous yes, but it makes him take the leap and take risks, which is something that I really do admire because I’m very much on the “safe side”. I’m not a spontaneous type of person and I would love change that about myself and be brave to take more risks, every now and then.
Ironically, Heiji’s impulsiveness and aggressiveness is also one of the things that I sort of dislike about Heiji. Sometimes, it’s a bit too much and he’s hurting himself. He gets injured a lot and this worries me a lot. Hahahaha Other than that, it sometimes gives him a hard shell, it conceals his soft side, which we rarely see, but yeah, it’s showing slowly. (Also see my reaction on episode 873, “Heiji’s Attempt to Confess”) Also, what I dislike about Heiji, actually, this is not about Heiji alone. This is on the story line. I dislike how he’s taking so long to confess to Kazuha. I mean coz unlike ShinRan, they see each other everyday. But yeah, I do appreciate his efforts and yeah I understand he wants it to be perfect. So, overall, I don’t dislike this about him that much and it’s not his fault if Gosho wants to prolong that development. Hahahaha XD
Phew! I write so passionately about Heiji, I don’t know how I’m gonna get this ranking done. ^^” Huhuhu Sorry about this. Anyway…
2. Kudo Shinichi
Like I said earlier, Shinichi could’ve gone first, if this was asked years waayyy back. But yeah, I still love Shinichi a lot. He only lost the top spot to Heiji by just a few points. (So Heiji, honey, don’t be so cocky about this. Hahaha.) The reason why Shinichi came in second is because he hasn’t changed much throughout the whole series of Detective Conan, not that he has much to change anyway. I could say, his character is a bit more stagnant compared to Heiji’s but then again, Shinichi was already perfect all throughout the beginning of the series. I honestly like and dislike this about him. Of course, I like how Shinichi’s mature and he has a lot of wisdom in him. He’s a good character. But I have to say, sometimes, Shinichi’s just too good to be true. It’s hard to see his more human and more relatable side. I honestly love imperfect characters more than perfect ones like Shinichi. As a writer and viewer I think they’re more relatable and more interesting to work with and watch/read about. Although, I honestly think that Shinichi becomes more human is when he is with Ran. He gets to be less “safe” and more transparent with his emotions. He’s so heavy on his principles and very strong about them, but with Ran he is different and for Ran, he actually does get to defy the principles he believes in and I love this about him. (Going a little off topic, but still related to what I’m talking about: This is why I love the Kyoto Arc so much because we get to see more of Shinichi being a regular teenager. I also love the episode about Ray Curtis because I got to see more of Shinichi’s emotions and we got to see how he can be imperfect at times and that because he was a big fan of Ray, he was at first being blind in his deductions because he’s biased towards Ray, but in the end, he does the right thing.) I mean, he is all about the truth but he lied to Ran, the most important person to him because he doesn’t want her to get involved with the BO. Like after the Conan thing, he was scared and we get this because it’s a life and death situation. Okay, so overall, I think Shinichi’s “perfect” character works well because he’s gonna get more interesting in the end. By being Conan, we saw him fall and all of a sudden he was less perfect than he used to be and he was more vulnerable. (OMG. I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE, GOSHO! OKAY AS I’M WRITING THIS, I’M A WAVERING AND I’M CONFUSED IF SHINICHI DOES RANK AS SECOND! But what’s done is done. So… HAHAHAHA XD)
Anyway, I love how Shinichi’s more calm than Heiji. I think it balances their friendship really well. They’re like Yin and Yang. I also like how he is more softer than Heiji. I mean, with Ran he’s more transparent with his caring side compared to how Heiji is to Kazuha. I think Heiji’s more on the tough-love kind. (I think this sprung from how he is raised by Heizo. Just a little theory.) Shinichi’s more transparent with his love for Ran and he’s more sure of his feelings, compared to Heiji who took a lot of time figuring out that he actually has feelings for Kazuha. Shinichi was sure from the very beginning that he already loved Ran from the very moment that he saw her and I think this is just cute. Also, Shinichi’s such a gentleman especially during his date with Ran on the “Desperate Revival Arc.”
Another thing I love about Shinichi is his way with words. I love how he phrased his confession with Ran and I love how he talks sense to people. I think Shinichi would’ve been a writer like Yusaku if he wasn’t a detective. Just my opinion.
I love how ideal Shinichi is. I think that his thoughts are very ideal and if people in this world think like him, the world could have been a better place. But ironically, I think that I also dislike this about him in someway because his thoughts could and have already gotten him into trouble. Huhuhuhu This world is a cruel place for you, my child.
3. Kuroba Kaito
Kaito came in third for the only reason that I’m more into Detective Conan than Magic Kaito. Since I got into the DC fandom first, I’m a bit more attached to Heiji and Shinichi than I am to Kaito. I also think that I still have yet to discover about him. But I really do love Kaito as well. I love his playfulness. I love his bright character. I also love how he’s not the conventional type of good character. It’s a good conflict to his story. (I don’t think we have to discuss this further. We all get the point right? XD) I think compared to Conan’s story which is heavy on the murder and mystery, not to mention drama everytime the culprit admits to his/her crimes, Kaito’s story is more on the comic relief and adventure.
I love his clever tricks and everything just seems so fun with Kaito in it. What I do dislike a bit about Kaito is that sometimes he gets too playful about things to the point where he disrespects the people around him. I also do not like him looking at Aoko’s panties every single day of his life. I mean, Kaito dear, let me quote your father’s words, “That is not how you treat a lady.” >.
I think I can’t talk too much about Kaito as much as I did with Shinichi and Heiji, since I feel that I still don’t know him too well and this is the reason why Kaito came in third.
4. Hakuba Saguru
I feel bad about placing him last. I think that he is the most underrated Gosho Boy ever. T.T My reason for placing him last is sort of the same as my reason for ranking Kaito the third. I think that Hakuba nad Kaito could’ve actually tied in the ranking. Kaito just scored a few points higher than him ‘coz I’ve seen Kaito a bit more than I’ve seen Hakuba. I really like Hakuba’s character. I like how he’s so sassy but still classy. He’s also really dreamy. But I feel that there’s still a lot that I should know about him. I think Hakuba needs more exposure, tbh.
I think I can’t talk too much about things that I dislike about Hakuba, since I don’t know him that much. Other than how Hakuba insulted Heiji in “Three Days with Hattori Heiji, (I’m not too salty about this. It was really entertaining how he ticked Heiji off. But yeah, he insulted my fave. Hahaha) I think there’s not much I could come up with since like I said, I still don’t know Hakuba that much.
So to sum things up, most of the things I dislike about the boys is about how they could be extreme with the distinct trait that they have (Heiji with his aggressiveness, Shinichi with his principles and idealism, Kaito with his “extra-ness” and Hakuba with his sass). Over all, the ranking is based on how well I got attached to the character and how well I know the character, not necessarilly on who I liked best. I think they are all interesting characters to be honest. Also I think, this ranking is just temporary and I feel that it would change in time as their respective storylines progress.
I hope I made my explanations clear and I’m sorry this was really long. I tend to word fart a lot. I also hope I don’t disappoint anyone with my ranking. This is just my opinion and personal preference and like I said, this ranking could change over time. I also hope you guys know that I really do love these boys so much and it was really hard for me to rank them. Over all, I’m just really beyond thankful that Gosho blessed my life with the Gosho Boys.

The Resemblance
Because I’m bored and I have had this idea on my mind for a freaking weak now. A Detective Conan One-shot
Summary: It started off as a normal trip to the mall, but ended up how Conan would never have foreseen. He never would have guessed that his real identity would have been found out by Ran during that innocent trip, especially by the method of which she did it.
“Don’t worry Ran, you just wait here,” Sonoko said, standing up from the dining booth located in a humble restaurant not far from the mall entrance. “I need to stretch my legs anyways, so I’ll take the brat to the restroom.”
“Are you sure?” Ran said at the same time as Conan when mumbled under his breath, “I can go by myself…”
Sonoko nodded with a smile before grabbing, not harshly, Conan’s arm. “Come on four eyes,” she yelled happily while she dragged the poor elementary kid out of the restaurant. Ran watched with a smile as Conan tried to escape Sonoko grasp while the older girl just laughed at his attempts and playfully ruffled his hair.
It’s been half a year since Conan had wandered into her life… a half year since Shinichi left… and she would be lying if she said she hadn’t grown attached to the small bespectacled boy. He was like her little brother, and she soon found herself treating him as such. Of course she always had that sneaking suspicion that Conan wasn’t who he said he was… but she proved wrong many times in her silly theories of Shinichi really being Conan. Sometimes she still saw resemblance between the small boy and her childhood best friend, sometimes she could swear that they were the same person, but now she forced herself to ignore those silly thoughts and just continue to love Conan as a brother, afterall it wouldn’t be fair to him if she treated him any differently and ended up wrong.
As she mused she looked down at the booth she was sitting at and took a sip out of a glass of cola, already delivered to them by the waiter while she waited for the food. Sonoko had gotten a mountain dew and Conan grudgingly took a chocolate milk after being told “No” by Ran when he practically begged for coffee. Why did he think she’d ever let him drink that stuff? It would stunt his growth, and she told him that multiple times already.
Suddenly, a tap on her shoulder anchored her back into the present. “Um, excuse me Miss…”
Ran’s eyebrows knitted together as she turned around and saw a middle aged man standing over her shoulder with a curious look on his face. He removed his hand from her shoulder when he realized he had her attention. “Yes?” Ran asked, not sure if she should trust the guy or not. With the amount of random murders she ran into, she could not be too careful.
“Um, I’m sorry, let me introduce myself,” the man said. “Mind if I…?”
“No, no, please, have a seat,” Ran said with a smile, but her tone let the man know she was suspicious about him.
“Ah yes, thank you.” the man went to the chair opposite of her and sat down, he then proceeded to net his hands together while he wore a thoughtful look. “My name is Shirogane Kichiki. I work at Tropical Land as a guard,” he said.
Ran gave him a welcoming grin. “Nice to meet you,” she said as she reached out to shake his hand, to which he obliged. “I’m Mouri Ran.”
“Mouri? You mean like the famous Mouri Kogoro?” Kichiki asked.
“Yes, I’m his daughter.”
Kichiki nodded with his lips pursed in thought. “And what of that little boy you were with? Is he your brother?”
Ran raised an eyebrow. Why was he asking about Conan…? “No… he's… he’s a relative of one of my friends, he’s staying with us until things calm down back at his home in America.”
“I see,” Kichiki sighed. “I’m sorry, he just reminded me of someone.”
“There is no need to apologize,” she said. “Mind I ask who?”
Kichiki looked at her from across the table with a startled expression. “N-no, I mean, it’s not like I personally knew the kid, me and some of my colleague’s just found a little boy about a half year ago at Tropical Land.” His eyebrows went together in thought. “A strange boy, he had a head wound and was wearing way too big of clothes. He was ranting about really being a high schooler, and that he was tailing two men in black who were blackmailing some kind of gun smuggler, only be be caught and whacked over the head and then fed some kind of poison. We took him to the outpost, but he escaped before we could do anything else.”
He looked up from where his eyes had traveled down to the table and was met with a pale teenage girl who had a look of shock gracing her features.
“Can… Can I ask what he was wearing?” She finally asked in a small voice.
Kichiki frowned at her expression but answered her anyway. “If I remember correctly, he was wearing oversized clothing… green jacket, yellow shirt, and jeans I think.”
Kichiki suddenly jumped when Ran just as suddenly slammed her fist on the table. A vein had started to pop on her forehead. “Did he have a stupid cowlick at the back of his head?”
“Y-yes…”
Ran abruptly stood up from her booth. “Please save my spot, Shirogane-kun. I’ll be back.” Her voice too calm. Her expression too neutral. Before Kichiki could say anything, she stalked out of the restaurant with a determined expression.
-o-o-o-o-
“Oh, so you didn’t fall in,” Sonoko teased when Conan stepped out of the men’s bathroom. The annoying rich girl had tried to take him in with her into the women’s restroom, on the excuse that he was tiny and who knew what could happen to him if he went into the “Scary big boys bathroom” without her supervision. He knew it was just an excuse for her to make fun of him. So, before she could drag him into the female restroom, he slipped out of her grasp and bolted into the male’s, and just to piss her off he took his time.
He growled as a response and stalked past her and she sighed and followed. “Jeze, what’s got you all angry, runt?”
‘Oh, I don’t know, maybe it’s the fact that I’m stuck in the body of a six year old with poor bladder control, or maybe that I’m small enough that falling in is a possibility, or - and this would get even Gin laugh - that I’m forced to ask for an ESCORT TO THE BATHROOM BECAUSE I’M SO TINY AND RAN DOESNT BELIVE I CAN TAKE CARE OF MYSELF.’
“I’m tired,” he said instead of all those depressive thoughts.
“Whatever, brat.”
They walked in silence back towards the restaurant, but both stopped in their tracks when a certain teenaged girl sporting a unicorn-esque hair-horn came running down through the crowd towards them. “Sonoko! Conan-kun!”
Sonoko ran up to meet her best friend half way. “Ran? What are you doing? What about our table?”
“Oh don’t worry, someone is saving it for us.”
Conan looked up at Ran, confused. What was she doing… why was she here? She started to explain to Sonoko that she thought she saw someone she recognized and ran after them to say hi, only for that person to not be the one she thought they were, so she decided to meet up with Sonoko and Conan. Even though her expression and tone looked and sounded honest enough, Conan couldn’t help but think she had some kind of alternative motive.
After a few words between best friends, the small group of three continued their journey back to the restaurant. As they walked, Ran suddenly cleared her throat.
“Ne, Sonoko, do you ever wonder what happened to Shinichi?” She asked.
Both Sonoko and Conan looked over at her in surprise, though for different reasons. Sonoko was shocked that Ran would bring up Shinichi on her own, while Conan was shocked that she brought him up at all.
“Um, not really? He told you that he’s working on a big case, right?” Sonoko said, unsure of where Ran was going to take the conversation.
Conan remained silent and let Ran continue her train of thought. “Yeah, he said that. But, he disappeared without saying anything to me at Tropical Land. I think that’s when he stumbled on to his so called big case. I always wonder what made him that night go into hiding.”
Conan suddenly felt a load of guilt take over in his chest. All he wanted was for Ran to be happy and safe. He wanted to tell her everything, because he knew that keeping her in the dark only hurt her. But, her safety was more important than her feelings, so he couldn’t ever tell her.
“Oh?” Sonoko asked, still sounding a bit unsure.
Ran nodded with a sad smile before stopping and picking up Conan, hugging him to her chest. “I have a few ideas. I guess some more crazy than others.”
“Really Ran-neechan?” Conan asked, desperately trying to keep a childish face on.
“Yeah,” Ran sighed. “I used to think that he got kidnapped or something. Or maybe he’s lying about the case and ran off with some pretty face.” Her voice went sadder as she continued. “For a while I thought he didn’t like me anymore and decided to just leave…” her arms tightened around Conan, but the grip didn’t feel right. It felt like she was trying to… keep him from getting out of her arms instead of her comforting herself. “You know, I have this crazy theory,” she started with an odd voice. Even Sonoko looked worried, “that those men in black we saw on that roller coaster had to do with his disappearance.”
“Men in black?” Sonoko asked as Conan fought to keep his breathing steady.
Ran nodded. “Shinichi thought they were suspicious. What if he ran after them and found them doing illegal things? What if he got caught and they fed him some kind of drug that changed him somehow.”
Sonoko looked confused but Conan was wide eyed with shock. He looked up at his crush and saw her staring straight back at him.
“What if… and I know it must sound crazy… but what if the drug shrunk him into a little boy?”
Her eyes weren’t questioning, but they were determined. A fire burned brightly and Conan - no - Shinichi had to remind himself to breathe.
“But that’s crazy, right Conan-kun?”
And suddenly, Shinichi knew he had a lot of explaining to do if he wanted to live to see the next day.

I love all your Heizuha contents!!!! Oneshots, drabbles, etc (memes too lol). And your ANGST FICS???? I'M DESTROYED. Just curious, if you are accepting requests, can you write happy shinran and heizuha oneshot? I need something to heal from your angsty AUs 😢😢😢😢💦💦
Hi hello thank you so much 🥺 AH YES HEIZUHA I’m HEART-EYES FOREVER 😍!! My hot-blooded Kendo boi and his Aikido (and Karuta) queen ugh they make me feel so soft. Wait—don’t be destroyed pls omg I have a shinran oneshot first for you right here! And yes it actually is a happy one. Although I gotta say I’m probably even worse at doing happy sappy fluff. But still, I hope you like this! ❤️❤️
Fandom: Detective Conan/DCMK Pairing: Shinichi/Ran Rating: G Genre/Tags: Romance, Fluff Summary: Ran hates being apart from Shinichi. All she wants is to feel his warmth next to her.
•
Ran is happy to be with Shinichi, even if it means not being physically together and having to survive long distance.
Now she would be lying if she says it doesn’t bother her in the slightest. After they got together and she finds out that Shinichi still has to leave for his ongoing case, her initial thought is that it wouldn’t bother her. She’s grown so used to it by now. It’s not like he’s never coming back, because he always does. After all, they just started dating, and maybe this way they’ll still be in their honeymoon stage for years to come.
They have been doing alright with frequent calls and texts sent to each other. Although she is slightly upset that they can’t physically go out on any dates, hearing Shinichi’s voice always makes everything worth it. She knows she’s going to forget all this as soon as she sees him again.
She does expect Shinichi to be as sad and lonely as she is, but she never asks about it. She doesn’t want him to think that she’s already turning clingy after only a few months into their relationship. And because she is an understanding girlfriend, she never tells him how she feels about it. She has been saying “I love you” more often though, now that she’s more comfortable saying it, which he always happily returned. She never once doubts Shinichi either—he gives her zero reasons to. Besides, they have short meet ups every now and then, and those feel like they are enough for her.
There are certain things that leaves her feeling an extra amount of longing. When she sees couples out and about in the streets, or strolling around the park, or fooling around in the hallway of their school, it breaks her heart a little. She wants Shinichi by her side, to be able to cuddle into his warmth. She wants to walk next to him and hold his hand, to go to the movies and check out cute restaurants.
“I miss you,” Ran mumbles into her mic, only one side of her earphones on. She is lying on her bed, on a call with her boyfriend who is still away, on yet another case. She has to cherish all their calls together because time is all she can afford.
She traces her finger on her phone’s screen, outlining his name that’s currently displayed, yearning to touch him. She can't help but feel disappointed when all she can feel is how hot her phone is. She should probably get a new phone soon.
“I miss you too. More than words can describe,” Shinichi replies guiltily, sad that Ran is so troubled. He has been trying to ease her pain by sneaking away to call her more often these days. He sees the longing in her eyes, always wondering what he can do for her. He hates it, hates seeing Ran’s face contort into sadness and what seems like disappointment. It never gets any easier.
If only she knows that they are actually together literally every single day.
“Anyway, how is your day?” Shinichi asked, trying to change the subject to distract her.
Ran huffs. “Conan-kun left on a weekend camping trip with his class. I’m worried about his safety. They’re elementary students, they’re not supposed to go camping in the mountains yet!”
Shinichi smiles fondly. Yep, he’s definitely on his camping trip all right.
“Also, it is kind of lonely here when he’s not around.” Lonelier, she adds to herself.
“You have nothing to worry about, I’m sure he’ll be okay,” Shinichi reassures, grinning.
“I suppose it’s true. Conan-kun does know how to take care of himself. What are you doing, anyway? Do you have to go soon? Can we switch to video call?” The hope in her voice is unmistakable. He purposely ignores Ran’s questions while wrecking his brain for a believable excuse to not switch to video call. But it is too late, she has already pressed the button that requested for him to accept the call.
Uh oh.
Shinichi curses silently. As soon as their cameras are on, he raises his phone up close to his face, careful to leave the streetlights out of view. “Hi!,” he says, hoping she wouldn’t detect the nervousness in his voice. Ran squints at the blurry screen. She can’t see much, but it is enough to make her whole evening better.
“You know what, Shinichi? It’s okay, you’re probably busy and tired, I understand! Have a good night or morning, wherever you are, okay?” Ran yawns, turning to lie on the other side as she reaches out to switch off her table lamp. “I’m already getting ready for bed anyway. Please stay safe out there. I love you.”
“NO!” Shinichi yells, before realizing how loud and unnecessary it is. He stops to look around, praying that no one around him is affected by the noise he is making. Ran is decently surprised. “Shinichi, what’s wrong?”
“I, uh, I’m staking out a criminal’s possible hideout. It’s really boring here because nothing is happening so far and it’s probably deserted. Keep me me while I wait?” Shinichi asks sheepishly, belatedly realizing how dumb of an excuse he just gave. Is it even believable in the slightest? “I’m just walking around the place now,” He adds as he quickened his pace.
Ran yawns but he can see her nodding her head in the dark. “Don’t you have to be aware of your surroundings, though? What if the bad guys creep up on you?”
“You’re right,” he says half-heartedly, not really paying attention to what she’s saying anymore. He’s trying to climb up the stairs as fast as his feet can take him. He is so close.
Ran mumbles something sleepily in return. How she wishes for body heat, but she only had her blanket to make up for the warmth. She closes her eyes, unaware that the line has gone silent. After a few more beats of silence, she hears the front door being unlocked. She sits up, suddenly alert and forgetting about her call with Shinichi. It is definitely not her father, since she can hear his snores very audibly from his room. Is it Conan, coming back from his camping trip a few days early? But—it’s literally the middle of the night, so if it actually is Conan, he has some explaining to do. She tip-toes to the door just to get ready in case it is an actual robber.
As the door unlocks and the intruder enters, Ran’s eyes widen and her hand flails around for the switch to turn one of the lights one as she recognizes the familiar silhouette. It can't be.
“Surprise.” Shinichi is standing there, smiling widely at the sight of his dumbfounded girlfriend.
Ran stares at the boy in front of her for a good while before reaching out for him in a frenzy. “You’re kidding,” she chokes out, wrapping her arms tightly around him, afraid he will be gone again as soon as she let go.
“I’ve missed you too,” Shinichi sighs, hugging Ran back just as tight. They stand like that, hugging at the door silently, choosing to ignore the fact that her father can very well walk out of his room at any given moment. Shinichi pulls away, frowning, when he realizes that she is crying.
“Hey, don’t cry.” He whispers softly, bending his knees to look at Ran who has her head down. She shakes her head, opting to bury her face in his chest instead. Shinichi run his hands up and down her back, gently kissing the top of her head. “Don’t cry, I’m here.”
Ran looks up, a few droplets of tears streaming down her face. “That’s exactly why I’m crying! You’re back now, for.. God knows how long, and then you’re gonna have to leave me again. Probably in a few hours, or in the morning if we’re lucky,” she cries, sniffling. “I’ve missed you so much.”
Shinichi remains quiet as Ran cries her heart out in silence. Then, he very gently lifts her up, carrying her to the bedroom and setting her down on the bed. “Actually, I have a few days to spend with you.”
“Wh-what do you mean?”
“I mean, you’re right. And I’m not gonna lie to you, I will have to leave again, but not until Monday. So.. I’m yours for the whole weekend.” Shinichi says, hoping for her acceptance, despite how little he is offering her right now.
“The whole weekend?” Her smile is back on her face at this point. Sounds like she will just have to make the most out of this weekend, then. It’s a good thing she doesn’t have anything yet planned. She wipes the tears off of her face. She can’t waste their time together by crying like this. “Oh Shinichi, there are so many places that I wanted to go with you to!”
“We can go anywhere you want,” says Shinichi. That already sounds perfect to him. Truth be told, any moments spent with Ran were perfect. The Where and What weren’t all that important. Like right now. Even in the dim light, he can see how bright she’s smiling. God, all he wanted to do is stare at her and admire her beauty, amongst everything else.
He hates lying to Ran, although it is done to protect her, to shield her. He will have to lie to her some more, but this time, he does not want to make any more promises he can't keep. “It will all be over soon, I promise. I’ll come home for good.” You’re my home, he wants to say.
She has missed him so much—she missed his voice, his scent, his warmth, his presence. She crawls towards him, unable to hide the overwhelming sense of hope that arises after his declaration. “Really?”
“Really.” Ran can feel the tears welling up again. This time, out of happiness. “It hurts so much to not be able to be by your side.”
“I’m here,” murmurs Shinichi quietly as he reaches out to wipe some of her fallen tears away with the pad of his thumb. “... and I’m always watching.” he adds quietly, wrapping an arm around her as he hugs her to sleep.
Ran nods in silence. She has so many things to tell him, but she is content with just enjoying his warmth and presence beside her for now. Truly, nothing can compare to the homey feeling and the familiarity of being next to Shinichi. She lets him hold her to sleep, his voice a lullaby that carries her out of consciousness.
“I’m always with you,” he whispers, leaning down to kiss her forehead, “There’s nowhere I’d rather be.”

The Innocence Game (2/??)
Summary: In which Aoko makes her decision, and learns a few things about Kaito and the group.
[Previous Chapter]
"Kaito?"
The words slip from her tongue before she has a moment to think about what she's going to say. Instead of holding back and double checking that this actually is her best friend, Aoko just speaks, hoping that she isn’t wrong.
She watches as his eyes widen, cracks appearing on the poker face he's spent years adjusting, and decides that it really is him. She takes a moment to study his face, clean-shaven compared to the slight stubble he's had the last time she'd seen him. He looks well rested, no longer wearing makeup to cover the bags under his eyes - He'd let her see, Aoko knows that, before he’d left he had let her see the shine of makeup under his eyes.
He looks well. It both warms Aoko and makes her want to punch him in the face.
"A-Aoko?"
Kaito scrambles up on the sofa, pulling himself up so that he's knelt on cushions, staring across at her. His eyes are the way she's remembered, wild - although they look subdued, almost like she's witnessing a lion in a cage. The fact that he hasn't pulled any visible tricks since they've entered the room makes her think that maybe he has been a little tamed.
Beside them, Shinichi hums. He says, "I take it you two know each other then."
Kaito sends him a fleeting glance, before focusing only on Aoko. His expression is odd, and Aoko isn't sure how to read it exactly, because even when she had daily practise it had been difficult getting a read on him, and she's not seen him in months.
"We do." Kaito says, and he vaults over the sofa, leaning back against it, peering closely at Aoko as if she's changed vastly since he'd last seen her. Aoko doesn't think that she's changed much - but she sees herself everyday, so she's probably the most unlikely person to know about any changes. "We're childhood friends."
Aoko thinks that he should be more excited over seeing her, but she knows she probably cares more for him than he ever did for her. It's something she's known for a long time, and while it doesn't exactly make it easier to bear, it it something she's long since accepted as part of their relationship.
"So this is where Kaito has been hiding?" Aoko says, turning to look at Shinichi instead. Months of wanting to see him again and now she doesn't want the conversation. Doesn't want to ask him why. "Aoko didn't expect that Kaito would ever do detective work."
"I don't - wait, is that why she's here? To join part of your weird detective group?"
Aoko bites at her lip, decides that she's not going to turn to Kaito, and waits for Shinichi to answer his question. The detective crosses his arms, and after a second, he shrugs his shoulders.
"We thought that Nakamori-chan would be a good addition to the team. She's smart and we think she'd be well suited. She's yet to make a decision though."
Kaito lets out a strangled complaint. "Aoko can't become a detective. She's not allowed."
Okay - Aoko might not have seen him in a while, and she might not have a mop on hand, but she's not going to deal with Kaito saying what she is and isn't allowed to do. She turns to him, eyes narrowed into a glare, her lips thin as she says, "Idiot, Kaito doesn't get to decide what Aoko is and isn't allowed to do."
He lets out another strangled complaint, but Aoko doesn't listen to it. Instead,
She turns to Shinichi and says that she'll join - and maybe she's doing it more out of spite than want, but she doesn't care. Shinichi gives a smile, more coy than she'd expected, before telling her that they'll have to go tell the Inspector and his father about her decision.
"Let's go then." Aoko says.
She makes her way to the door, and as she walks to the door, she overhears Shinichi say, "if it's any consolation, she's not going to be doing any detective work - just forensic work. We can't all be critics."
Kaito mutters something, but Aoko doesn't listen. She knows it's childish, but there's something about Kaito that makes her bring out her inner-child, and their relationship has always been based on the bridge between childhood and maturity. She'll talk to him, later, she promises herself, once she's thought of the questions she wants to ask him.
"This way," Shinichi says, leading her back to the first room they'd entered.
Thankfully both Saguru and Hattori have stopped bickering, and while Aoko is kind of curious where the darker-skinned teen has gone, she doesn't find herself wanting to ask. Saguru remains however, sitting up at a counter, poured over the case file he'd been arguing about previously.
He glances up at the sound of footsteps, and gives a polite smile.
"Kudo-kun... and Aoko-san?" He pauses, does a double take before tilting his head slightly. "You've been asked to join, no doubt?"
The politeness feels the way it always does: odd but not unwelcome. As much as he can be awkward around others - social interaction has never been his forte - Aoko doesn't find him annoying. There are parts of him that could be deemed irritating, but well, Aoko is pretty sure that she's desensitised to pet-peeves thanks to Kaito.
"Aoko has," she says, "although she was surprised to see that Hakuba-kun is here as well."
From behind her, Shinichi pipes up, "she just accepted, so we were on our way to tell Inspector Megure. She'll be helping us out with forensics."
Saguru inclines his head, and asks, "will you be telling her about Kuroba-kun?"
Aoko turns to Shinichi and watches as he pauses, pulls at the collar of his shirt, deep in thought. It's as if he's speculating, weighing probabilities in his head - which, if the newspapers from years ago are true, isn't unlikely. Then, he says, "I don't see a reason why we shouldn't. The rest of the group know."
It's almost as if they're baiting her to ask. They've got to know that she'll be curious, as detectives they should be able to deduce that about her, should see it in the way she tenses, her gaze flickering between them.
"Tell Aoko what?"
Both of the boys turn to her. She can see nervousness dance across their expressions, can see how Saguru doesn't want to be the one to say it, how Shinichi isn't sure what to say. The latter is the one who steels himself though, readying himself to give her the information she's asking for.
"Kuroba's situation is different to the rest of the group. We're all here because we want to be, whereas he's here as part of a deal with my father."
Aoko isn't sure why she suddenly feels a wave of foreboding rush over her, but she does. It trickles down her spine, cold like ice, leaving her with the impression that she'd be better off not knowing. A deal - why would Kaito need to make a deal? She's never known him to do something he doesn't want to do, and for him to need to make a deal about something...
"The deal," Shinichi continues, "is that if he gives help on cases, that he won't be charged with the offences he's accumulated."
Offences? It almost sounds as if they think Kaito is some sort of criminal.
Aoko glances at Saguru, notices how he is intensely looking down at the case file he's been looking at previously, trying to avoid eye contact, and realises that he'll be little help in explaining. She doesn't expect him to speak again, then, if they're talking about Kaito being a criminal - he's claimed his guilt before and seen how she'd reacted, and obviously, he doesn't want to do so again.
"Kaito isn't-"
"He is." Shinichi says, and while he's quiet, his tone is firm. "You've heard of Kaitou 1412, I've heard that you're father worked the case."
Aoko tries to take a breath, shudders, and shakes her head. She says, "Kaito is not KID. Aoko doesn't believe that he'd-"
She breaks off at the sympathy in Shinichi's eyes. Or is it pity? Aoko really isn't sure, but it's enough to make her think that he's being serious. It's not enough, however, to make her believe. She needs proof, won't believe until she's given a shred of evidence about her bestfriend's culpability.
Her resolve must show in her eyes, because Shinichi dips his head, nods absentmindedly to himself, and takes a step forward. He says, "I've got the file on my laptop, I'll show you."
And together, they walk off in search for evidence.
Later, after she has talked everything over with Inspector Megure and Kudo Yuusaku, Aoko leans back against a seat. Information reels in the back of her head, the entire situation blurred as if an elaborate daydream.
Instead, she's left to consider everything that's happening.
She's been told that most of the group stay in the apartments on the second floor, as it makes it takes pressure off of the teenagers to get home later at night. Of course, Kudo Yuusaku had said, it didn't mean that Aoko was required to move in, although she was free to room with the other girls - Ran and Kazuha.
(Yuusaku had also mentioned that they had the largest apartment, compared to the other smaller rooms that the boys were stuck in. Apparently the boys were more territorial, and the four of them were spread across three other rooms.)
Aoko pauses, wonders where she will fall on that point. She's not sure. It'd make sense to move into the apartment, with her father constantly at work, it isn't like there's much waiting at home for her. Just a lonely room - but if she has roommates, then maybe her evenings won't be as lonely anymore. It's a big decision though, and Aoko decides that she wants to talk it over with her father before accepting.
Schooling isn't difficult either - she'll still attend Ekoda high, alongside Saguru, and case work shouldn't affect her education. There are some circumstances however, that do change - on some cases, they'll be allowed time off of school, especially if it requires travelling, provided that they stay up to date with school work and score well during mid-terms.
It doesn't really explain why Kaito doesn't attend Ekoda anymore, or why Heiji and Kazuha, a pair of Osakans, are living in Tokyo. The only way to know that, she supposes, is to ask. Not now - but eventually.
And finally - Kaito.
The evidence that Shinichi had showed her was... incriminating. The case file, his fingerprints, photographic proof. All tangible, all valid. She almost doesn't know how to react.
She doesn't know how to feel.
"Aoko...?"
Aoko doesn't respond.
"Kudo told me that you were in here," Kaito says, and his footsteps echo in the silence. It purposeful, he's usually so light-footed, quiet when he moves - he's letting her know he's coming in, not sneaking up on her. "I thought I'd show you my newest card trick. It's amazing and you're going to love it."
"Will Aoko?" She asks, glancing over her shoulder. Her stomach settles from the churning from before, when she glances at him, and maybe she doesn't know whether she's more disappointed or sad, but strangely... she doesn't feel angry. It's as if all of the fire has been doused with water, and fighting about a decision he made years ago doesn't seem worth it. "Come show Aoko."
Kaito flashes her a smile, although it wavers as they sit down.
As he shows her the trick, his mask slowly slips. She smiles as he shows her the card she'd picked, and lets out a gasp as she leans forward and takes it away, searching it for any signs of tampering. It's probably strange, not to trust Kaito's cards, to anyone except them. But when they'd been ten, Kaito had urged her to check the cards, so that after she found nothing, he could insist it was because of magic.
They'd been so innocent back then, Aoko thinks, passing the card back.
Kaito had been innocent.
"Show me another," Aoko instructs, and Kaito does. Several card tricks later, she notices the odd expression he's wearing - almost brooding. "What is it?"
Kaito pauses. Picks up his cards, and shuffles them. He's staring more at spades and hearts than at her, and his shoulders stiffen as he asks, "you know, don't you?"
For a master of disguise, it almost seems as if he's bad at keeping his emotions in check. But Aoko thinks that it's because he doesn't want to hide it, wants to give her this small truth now that she's had the rest of the puzzle click into place.
She pulls out another card from his deck when he quits shuffling, glances at it, and places the two of spades back into the pack. "Yes."
Kaito shuffles his deck, and it's not loud when he speaks, but she can hear a distinct, "I'm sorry."
And Aoko is certain she knows why - because KID's return had taken all of her father's time, had stolen her best friend away. She wants to be angry, wants to whack him with a mop until he knows how angry KID makes her, but it really doesn't seem worth it.
"Aoko is okay." She says, even though she has to blink tears away. Luckily, none of them fall. Kaito would tease her about it in any other situation, and even though she's upset, she doesn't want him to feel overly guilty either. "She's just going to need a while to understand."
He passes her back her card, grimaces. "I didn't want you to find out this way."
Aoko gives him a self-deprecating grin, "you probably didn't want me to find out at all."
"You're right," Kaito says, and he places the deck of cards down. "I didn't."
"Aoko will figure it out," she says, "just like she will help figure out cases with Kaito and everyone else."
Kaito sighs.
"Kudo-san told Aoko about what Kaito does to help out. Kaito's not here to solve the cases, but to listen to the interrogation tapes to see if people are lying. He reads people and their tells, and makes sure the group gets the truth given to them..." Aoko pauses, looks up at gives as wide a smile as she can - it's small, hardly more than a grimace, but it is something, at least.
"After all, as KID, Kaito knows all about people. He can spot a liar anywhere, because he's such a good one himself."
