a morning behind the explosions
pairing: timeskip bakugo x reader (married with kids au)
notes: this was waaayy back in my old drafts so enjoy reading :P
Tumblr media
The early morning sunlight peeked through the curtains, casting a warm glow across the room. The soft murmur of your children’s voices could be heard from the kitchen, punctuated by the occasional burst of laughter. You smiled, knowing that the morning chaos had already begun—your two kids were always up bright and early, full of energy, ready to face the day.
You rolled over in bed, only to find that Bakugo’s side of the bed was already empty. You sighed with a smile, knowing exactly where he was.
As you stepped into the living room, you were greeted by the sight of Bakugo, his red eyes narrowed in concentration, wearing a faded “Kiss the Cook” apron over his usual black compression shirt. He was standing at the stove, one hand gripping a spatula while the other tried to balance a skillet full of eggs.
"Good morning," you said, leaning against the doorway with a teasing smile. "How’s the kitchen going today?"
Bakugo grunted, not turning to face you. “Don’t laugh. I’m making breakfast, alright? The kids wanted pancakes.”
You watched him flip an egg with surprising precision for someone who usually preferred to blow things up rather than cook. Despite his fiery personality, Bakugo had become a surprisingly competent cook over the years—especially after the birth of your first child. He didn’t want to admit it, but you knew he loved taking care of his family, even in the little things.
“Do they always expect you to cook?” you asked, stepping into the kitchen and moving to the counter to grab a cup of coffee.
“Yeah, well, they love my pancakes,” Bakugo said with a huff, his back still to you. “And if I let you cook, they’ll be crying ‘cause you’re too slow.”
You chuckled, watching as your youngest, a rambunctious four-year-old boy, scampered over to the kitchen table. His bright blond hair—so similar to his father's—was a mess, sticking up in all directions.
"Daddy! Can I have the biggest pancake?" he asked, his wide, eager eyes shining up at Bakugo.
"Quit being so damn greedy," Bakugo grumbled, but his voice had softened. He slid a plate of pancakes onto the table for your son. "Eat this first, then we’ll talk about the ‘biggest’ pancake."
Your heart swelled as you watched Bakugo gently serve his son, his gruff demeanor melting just a little when it came to his kids. It was a side of him that you had fallen in love with—the fierce hero, the protective husband, the devoted father.
As your son dug into his food, your daughter, who was just a year older, strolled into the room with her hair tied up in a messy bun. She rubbed her eyes and yawned, still half-asleep, but already demanding attention.
“Mom, can you make my pancakes in the shape of a heart today?” she asked, her voice still sleep-ridden but sweet as can be.
You smiled at her, walking over to give her a quick hug before turning to your husband. “I think she’s requesting a little extra love this morning,” you teased.
Bakugo rolled his eyes but was already pulling out a second skillet to make heart-shaped pancakes. He didn’t say anything, but his subtle smirk told you that he didn’t mind.
“Are you still planning to take them to the park later?” you asked, stirring your coffee.
“Yeah,” Bakugo replied as he flipped another pancake. “I said I’d take ‘em, so I will.” He turned to look at you, his fiery red eyes softening. “You can stay here and rest. You’ve been working all week. I got this.”
You raised an eyebrow. “I’m not going to sit on the couch while you do all the work.”
“Tch, I don’t need you hovering over me,” he muttered, but his voice was softer than usual. “It’s not a big deal.”
You gave him a knowing smile, watching as he poured batter into the pan, a small frown on his face as he tried to make sure the pancakes were perfectly shaped. “You’re getting good at this.”
Bakugo shot you a glare, but there was no heat in it. “You don’t need to act so surprised. I’m not some idiot who can’t learn stuff.”
You stepped forward, wrapping your arms around him from behind, resting your chin on his shoulder. “I’m not surprised. I love seeing this side of you, you know?”
He tensed for a moment, but then relaxed into your embrace. “Shut up,” he muttered, though the faintest blush crept across his cheeks.
Your son, now finished with his pancakes, climbed into Bakugo’s lap. "Daddy, can you play with me later?"
Bakugo gave a small sigh, but the smile that tugged at his lips was soft. “Yeah, I’ll play with you after I finish here.”
You watched them, your heart full as you saw the fatherly bond between them. Despite the explosive nature of his quirks and his harsh exterior, Bakugo was, without a doubt, the most dedicated father. And it was in these small, quiet moments that you saw just how much he cherished being a family man.
You grabbed the plates and began setting the table, glancing over at him. "You know, Katsuki, I’m really proud of you."
He scoffed, but there was no hiding the genuine warmth in his eyes. “Tch, don’t get all sappy. I’m just doing what needs to be done.”
You smiled, kissing his cheek quickly before returning to your task. “Yeah, I know. But that doesn’t mean I’m not proud of you.”
As the morning unfolded, you all sat down together at the table, sharing breakfast and laughs. The chaos of family life, while loud and often overwhelming, was something you had come to cherish. You didn’t need grand gestures from Bakugo—his love for you and the kids was shown in the small moments, in his quiet care and dedication to making sure everything was right.
And in that moment, surrounded by the noise and joy of your family, you knew that no matter how intense the world got, you had your own little piece of peace right here.

I cannot BELIEVE no one told me we had an update!!!!!
Anyways, here's my favorite bits as always, because I need to SCREAM about this one!
The rupee acquisition!
Tumblr media
I love how JoJo included that traditional *item acquired* pose that all the Links do, and gave it a reason in the comic (Wind insisting he hold it up is just so fun)
Sky's comment though, "don't spend it all in one place". Isn't that a line you get in Skord when you acquire rupees? The cute little easter eggs here are so fun!
I also really love how Legend is taking an instructional role here, both with Wars and the champion!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While also letting his veteran show
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and I love that the rest recognize that! Wild calling Legend "an expert" and actually listening to what he has to say, even if he doesn't agree with it.
I also super like the panels of Twilight's interaction with Legend here
Tumblr media
Very eldest and middle sibling discussing the youngest child, and I love it. It reminds us that, even for all the cuteness we got between them in the last arc, Twilight still sees Legend as too rough around the edges, enough that it borders on bullying when it comes to some of the rest, and he's trying to curb that. And Legend is LISTENING, because (as I've said a thousand times) Legend respects Twilight and values his opinion. Twilight is his big brother too now and Legend, while still being himself, genuinely seems to care about his opinion.
Twilight's just tense in general, although why, I think is mostly because of Time's sharp scolding in the last update. Even though he's snapping back at the younger ones, he's not very happy to be snapped at right now, and he's eager to get out from under Time's watchful eye.
Time and Warriors
Tumblr media
Because while he feels e has grounds to correct Legend for telling Wild what to do, Warriors straight up subtly scolding his protege is different. And the difference is that Legend and Wild and Twi had camaraderie (see Dawn p.3), they're brothers, but Wars is approaching this as a commander, a captain, and Twi doesn't appreciate that. Warriors isn't their leader though, but he's taking that role anyways. (Old habits die hard, I'm sure)
I mean, we all knew Wars was going to confront Wild sooner or later, but I'm glad he was so calm about it. Twilight's ruffled feathers (fur) is more from Time being overbearing, I believe, so it aggravates any slight annoyance Warriors might present.
Tumblr media
Even despite some of our suspicions earlier, I like this bit here. Wild was a soldier once, and the captain is very much the image of what he would have worked with before. JoJo mentioned wanting to play with that dynamic, with them bothering having military background, and I think this is that training (hundred years ago though it was) kicking in and making the champion defer to the man who outranks him (as far as they know). Granted, they all call Wars "Captain" but this felt pointed.
Tumblr media
I do love Four acting as the word of wisdom here, advising Time, just like he does Twilight, as to the best way to handle a team. it's a reminder that he's done this before, and he knows how teamwork can be, but also that sometimes you need space and working together means working in different areas.
Anyways, here's a couple bonus things that make me happy!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bunny stance!
(shh, I know he's making a point by stepping on Wild's toes, let me have this)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wars being so freaking pretty! Dear Hylia help me! (Is it wrong I understand Cia a bit now?)
Tumblr media
Wind being the youngest sibling who is Done With Your Chatter
Tumblr media
A competent boy being competent (and not as experienced as Ledge, but pretty darn close (if you've played both their games you know))
Tumblr media
Showing off items! (I can hear the little ✨da nana na✨)
And of course, I love Time being a tired, overprotective parent (he looks like my mom here, good grief!)

Lando Norris x OC Alice Davies
Word Count: 7.6k
Summary: Childhood friends too...?
Warnings: People changing, friendship ending, breakup, very brief smut, Angst!
Notes: Never written for Lando before but this idea seemed fitting for him soo. Also this is not an x reader story but an OC because it felt right and the OC is completely made up, names found on google's first page lol. It's soooo long too hehe. This fic needed so much research and I'm sure it's not all correct, but it is fanfiction, and also it's angstyyyy, probably not a happy ending, sry
Tumblr media
2005 Hampshire
"Lando Norris, what are you doing?!" Cisca yelled over the small yard causing the young boy to stop in his tracks. His hand still in Alice's hair as he was in the middle of pulling her to the ground.
"She took my car!" Lando tried to argue but Cisca looked furiously at her young son. "Take your hands out from her hair!"
Lando slowly untangled his hands from Alice's long strands and turned to his mother, having the decency to look slightly ashamed.
He glanced at his younger friend, her face holding a soft pout and her eyes spilling over with tears as she tried to hold them back. Lando always felt guilty when she looked like that, especially when it was his doing.
"Say sorry to Alice!" Lando's mom ordered, the small boy lifting his eyes slightly "Am sorry Alice" he spoke, feeling small under his mothers hard gaze. "You never pull her hair again, okay?"
"Okay, sorry" he muttered, turning around to follow his mother towards the house.
As he started walking he felt sadness creep onto him, he felt sad his mother was angry at him and that Alice had that expression on her face, it was the same one she had when the boys at school poked fun at her or when she knocked at their door because her parents were fighting again. He hated to be the one making her look like that.
Just as the feeling took a hold of him he felt a small hand on his, his head turning to meet Alice's smile, her hand opening his and gently dropping the small car in his palm. It was his favourite which was why she always teased him with it. "I'm sorry I took your car"
"It's okay, as long as you're not mad at me" Lando smiled. His eyes fleeting around before he found what he was looking for, running to the small row of flowers and picking the prettiest one before running back to Alice, hand offering the blue flower.
Her smile split her face open, she loved flowers, especially blue flowers. The girl wrapped her arms around her friend, thanking him with a soft giggle.
Soon enough the two kids happily strutted on, arms around eachother and Cisca looked at them with a fond smile as the kids where all happy again, playing tag in the green grass.
They were innocent, small and new to the world. If only it would always be this easy to forgive and forget.

2006 TeamSport Go track
Alice watched with longing eyes as she watched her friend in the go-kart. It was a competition hense why she was not allowed to join, she didn't necesarily want to compete but she liked to kart and Lando did too. So much he had told his friend he was gonna drive in formula when he got older, he was gonna be in f1 and win the championship.
It was already done
"Are you sure that's possible?" Alice had asked quietly, not to upset him but just because it meant he wouldn't be here, with her forever.
But Lando had told her that of course it was posible and maybe she didn't understand now because she was younger. She was in fact born a year later but she was only barely two months younger, something she had held for herself as she looked at the seven year old boy, his goal already set.
Done and dusted.
It was naive to think that they would spend all summers and years like this even if he wasn't in formula one but it was her thoughts, the underlying inevitable. She didn't want to seperate from him, ever. He was everything she needed and everything she always would need, that she knew.
Even if she was only six.
Tumblr media
2008 Hampshire
The sun was bathing on the young girl, her hair sticking out in every directions after their dip in the water, despite the warmth she had a warm smile etched on her face. Laughing with Lando as he threw water on her, chasing her down until she stumbled face first into the cold water.
This was the first time in a long time the two bestfriends were together again. Lando had been busy with his karting and Alice had not been able to follow him around.
The girl squeeled as she found herself underwater, the waves keeping her from the surface as she struggled to get air again. Panic settled in her body before Lando gently pulled her up to the surface, chuckling as she choked on the water she had inhaled. His laughter though, stopped immideately as he watched her face morph from coughing to crying.
"Lando, that was scary" she sobbed softly, wading up to the beach again as Lando followed. He liked teasing the girl but he hated it when he took it to far and she got sad.
"I'm sorry Alice" he pouted, reaching out to help her sort her towel out as it was crumpled to pieces as she tried to smothen it out but she just slapped his hand away.
Lando stood helplessly and watched his friend dry her tears, folding her arms over her chest stubbornly. "I am sorry Alice" Lando said again but her eyes narrowed at him
"I will pick you a flower on our way back" he pleaded, knowing that was gonna make her forgive him, it always did. "Fine, but it's gotta be pretty" she said, a smile slowly forming on her face as he finally relaxed. "Of course" Lando grinned before throwing himself on her towel, pushing her off it as they laughed.
Tumblr media
2010 Hampshire
"What do you want to be?"
The question came unexpected and the small girl pouted her lips in thought. Her eyes watching her friend who sat on the soft grass, hand picking on the strands in a way she wanted to tell him off for.
"A vet, a teacher or maybe a doctor" she rambled, Lando giggled, not to poke fun at her but because she looked so deep in thought over this simple question.
Lando already knew his dreams and had always done, it was all they talked about but lately he had pondered about her, had she ever told him? He didn't think so.
It was quite for a little while which made the young girl frown, the silence getting to her, she didn't like silence after she had said something so instead she snapped at Lando.
"Stop picking on the grass, you are destroying it" she muttered sharply, the brunettes hand immideately stopping his assualt on the gren strands. "Sorry" he muttered
Alice gave him a small smile, apologizing. "I think whatever it is you're gonna be great" Lando spoke, gathering the grass he had picked into a pile and blowing it in his friends face.
"Lando!" she half yelled half laughed as she launched over him, pining the laughing brit into the grass, smudging his face with a few strands she had gathered. "Alice!" he laughed, trying to squirm out of her grasp but he didn't have much of a upper-hand to the girl who giggled with him.
Tumblr media
2013 Ortona Italy
"You did it!" Alice grinned at her friend as he ran into her open arms, hugging her close to him as he giggled. "I did it" he mumbled into her soft hair. "I told you it was posible! I told you I would do it!" Lando laughed, overjoyed with the result and the win. Alice only giggled, she knew too, she knew anything he set his mind to he could do.
"Karting European Championship winner" he mumbled, smiling as the words reached his ears. This was the beginning, the very beginning to something so much bigger, to his dreams.
Alice watched his smile all afternoon as they celebrated with a big dinner in their rented house. The sun falling beutifully outside of the open deck. The grill was on and their mothers were going around filling up peoples glasses and hugging Lando every chance they got. Everybody was proud, everybody was happy.
It was one of the best days Alice could remember, not an ounce of bad mood everything light hearted and domestic in a way she never realised until years later, looking back at that afternoon.
Sitting with Lando on the edge of the landstrip down to the water, listening to him talk about his race, his dreams his passion as they munched on some sweets they had stolen from the big oak table.
Time seemed to float together as they sat there, feets gently tapping in the water, hands interwined and bodies close to the other. It was the first time they kissed, the two young teenagers to caught up in their own little bubble. To hung up on the sweet love they had always shared for eachother to even realize what kind of territority they stepped into.
Tumblr media
2014 World Championship Karting
He could spot her from miles away, her bright smile lightning up in the crowd in front of him. She was the first one with him, the first one aproaching with her arms wide open.
Lando laughed into her embrace as she smiled like an idiot "I'm so happy for you Lando, you are so good!" she praised, his heart swelling twice it's size at her voice and words. "Thank you" he whispererd, meaning it.
When he pulled away from her embrace he had to go back to the track, his friends immideately hogging him up.
"Congrats" George smiled. Lando grinned back, thanking him as he walked with the others to their cars, gathering all of their stuff to go home.
"Hey Lando" Max asked making the boy pull back a little to get even steps with the dutch boy. "Huh?" he questioned, watching his friend pull a slight face. "Just, that girl that is always with you, who is she?" Lando was too stunned to speak, he knew they had grown a lot, to the point were girls and relationship was a hot topic. Someone who had before only been a playmate was now someone people gawked at, rating and thinking up things with. It had been drastic and Lando often thought it got a bit too much.
But he couldn't deny the obvious, the feelings and the thoughts that sometimes bubbled up despite his liking. Alice had grown up to be a beutiful girl, she had always been in Lando's eyes but not in the way he now realized and it hadn't dawned on him that othes thought the same.
Spread laughter sounded around them "Mate, careful" George joked and Max's eyes rolled "Just wondering mate"
"Alice?" Lando stuttered, wanting to scream when Max nodded. She was often with Lando but had never cared for his karting-friends, saying they weren't her type even though she had only watched them from afar.
"Well she is my friend?"
"Friend?" Max repeated "So you are not together?"
Lando conteplated lying but he shook away the thoughts "No, she is my childhood friend"
"Well she is hot"
Lando swallowed hard, gritting his teeth togehter as he didn't say anything else but Max watched him, seeing the obvious discomfort and dislike to his friends comments and decided to let it go, Lando was a good friend and he understood Alice was important for him and he didn't want to step on anyones toes.
"She seems nice, that's all" Max concluded, patting his friend comfortingly on his shoulder before letting the topic change back to the race.
Lando tried to get into the joking mood but he couldn't really let his thoughts move on from Alice. Did she have a boyfriend? It wouldn't surprise him if she had, because she was..hot?
Lando battled with his thoughts. He didn't know, Alice had always been Alice. Nothing more nothing less, feelings had never even been questioned, love as more than friends had never been brought up, not necesary because they were them, togehter. The only time something like it had been talked about was when their mothers joked about them getting married.
Well they had kissed... but still
Was this all as confusing for her as it was for him? Did she have multiple suitors chattting her up and asking her on dates? Lando had no idea. Of all the things they spoke about this was a topic they had never even touched, never felt the need to.
"Come on man, go to your girlfriend" George joked, shoving him towards Alice who stood with his family, an uncertain smile forming on his face.
Tumblr media

His eys watched her as she helped his mom set the table. She was wearing a white flowy summerdress, the fabric flowing in the wind. His mom had helped her fix her hair with a flower and she looked absolutely stunning, with that wide smile on her face.
He couldn't pin it down to when she went from his cute best friend to this, to Alice. A young, mature beutiful woman, someone he felt a lot for and not only platonic feelings. Of course this was strictly hidden. After their little kiss nothing else had surfaced, nothing even close to happening. They had brushed it away.
He couldn't help it tough, he was also getting older, close to sixteen now and feelings did surface, thoughts he wasn't proud of circled in his head and he wondered if she had the same thoughts or if it was just his mind that was sick.
"What are you doing?" Alice laughed softly at him as he stood like frozen on the grass. Blinking rapidly as he shrugged, playing it off like always "Nothing, I was just thinking you know?"
"Really, thinking? Seems like out of usual, no?"
He pulled a grimace at her joke, but it soon turned into a smile as her laughter filled his ears. What a sappy sap he was and he hated himself for it. If any of his friends would see him now they would laugh in his face.
"You wanna come with me to pick flowers for the table?"
"Sure" he nodded, following her out of the main door and out on the field behind Alice's house. Her parents had gotten divorced a year ago, her father moving abroad for work whilst her mother stayed with her.
They had newly been able to pull this house, a beutiful small cute little home more on the countryside with fields and forests close by. It was peaceful, comfortable and beutiful, Lando thought it fitted Alice perfectly.
"What is on your mind today? You seem so distant" she pondered softly, her hair falling in her face as she plucked a beutiful pink flower from the field. "I don't know" he shrugged.
"Then talk to me" she smiled gently as she popped the flower into her basket.
"Do you... do you ever feel..." he couldn't figure out the right words to finish his sentence, "Feel? Of course??" she deadpanned and Lando let out a soft chuckle "No, I mean have you ever felt... like... romantic feelings for anyone?"
Alice scrunched her face up as she looked at her friend. "Do you have a girl I don't know of?" she asked, offended. "But I guess?"
Lando's face heated up, hands pressing against his cheeks as he sat down in the grass. "No no I don-wait you have?"
Suddenly his stomach filled with dread, did she have someone he didn't know of?
"I think so but it's a bit weird"
Lando couldn't say anything more before she spoke again, cutting him off. "Please go on, who is this? What are you feeling, it's okay you know"
Lando removed his palms from his cheeks, taking a deep breath. He felt almost overwhelmed by her calm sweet voice, gently nudging him on.
"Well I don't know, I am so unsure on it because it's... it's someone I've known for so long and I am not sure how I got to feel more than friendship. I have no idea if she likes me back but it's just getting clearer and clearer that I can't supress that I feel more and more every day"
Alice only nodded along his fast words, trying to comprehend and figure out who this was. She felt the same, it was a bit complicated because being friends forever made it a bit tricky to point out what was what.
She tried to keep an even face, not to let him know too obviously that her heart slowly cracked at his words, he liked someone else?
His eyes met Alice's, taking another deep breath
"It's you"
Tumblr media
2015 Hampshire
"I know" she repeated, it was all she said as she dragged Lando over the grass to the deck where she had been sitting all morning.
"What? You know what?" Lando asked confused, trying to make sense of her enthusiasm and rapid words.
She let go of his hand as they reached the small decktable, the oak scattered with papers, drawing, documents, all kinds of stuff and it didn't make Lando any wiser of what she wanted with all this.
"I know what I wanna do!" she exclaimed, excitment written all over her, from the way her eyes shone, the way her hand gestured over the papers and to how fast she talked and how she practially bounced up and down on the floor.
"Oh?" Lando asked, leaning forwards to see her papers. This had been a big deal for Alice, ever since he brought it up when they were ten she had been pondering over it. It was no stress and she knew that but for some reason, maybe because Lando knew his dream since the age of six, she felt the need to know.
"I want to be a diplomat!"
Lando fell quiet, too stunned to speak. A diplomat.
He was apparently not the only one having big dreams.
"What do you think?!" She asked, her voice so excited he had to be too. "I think it's fantastic!" Lando giggled, just as engrossed as she was as she pointed at the paper with the decsription of her future job, because Lando was sure she would make it.
"How do you become that?" "Well there are different aproaches to it depending on what you are most interested in to major but you need a bachelors degree but you can choose to major in example Law, international studies, political science or history but I think I want to go Law because then if I don't make it I can go into law for real so I'm gonna apply to Lawschool's here in England, Oxford and Cambridge. That's four years"
Lando's eyes followed her every movement as she spoke him through the different stages of how to become a diplomat. It seemed incredibly hard and long way there but she was so excited over this it made it's way over to Lando.

He looked at her so softly she didn't know what to do of herself. His colourmixed eyes filled with so many different emotions, so many questions.
His hair was all wet from the rain that had poured down over England as usual and his lips held a soft smile whilst his hand tilted up her chin.
"You are so pretty" he mumbled softly, Alice feeling her face heating up at the comment. "You are too" she spoke, her voice like silk, so low it was hardly even hearable through their deep breaths.
She couldn't tell what had gotten them here, alone in her house, cuddled up in her bed watching a movie. Watching a movie had turned to a kiss, then a makeout and now here they were, asking eachother silent questions about how to move forward.
They had started to explore more and more ground with eachother after their feeling-revelations. Slowly but surely taking step by step.
"Are you sure?" Lando asked unsurely, his voice deep and ragged, feeling nervous as he looked at the young girl laying so beutifully on his bed. It felt like he was dreaming. Not only was there a beutiful girl half naked in his bed it was also Alice. His teenage hormones were too high to manage at this point.
"Have you... ever?" she asked, watching his head shake "No, I have no idea of how.. this is suposed to g-"
"We will figure it out" she smiled, asking both of his current questions and he smiled, face relaxing as his mouth dived to hers again.
It was slow, gentle and intimate. Both of them taking their sweet time, caring for eachother.
Their bodies moved together, figuring out what felt the best for both. Lando didn't know what to do, what to feel, it was all overwhelming to a point he became blank of thoughts. Hands gently helping her move with him, relishing in her heavy breaths and small sounds as they explored a new part of themself and eachother.

His hand laced in hers as he gently pulled her along the streets in Silverstone. He had bought GP tickets for her birthday, revealing that his parents had helped him out a litttle after her worrying words for his money.
"Thank you" she said softly, smiling at Lando who looked back at her just as fondly. "Of course" was his reply, even though this didn't feel any type of of course
"Just want to make you happy" he murmured, making her heart soar
"I am happy just being with you, this-this is amazing and I am so happy and excited but you, you will always be enough"
Lando's smile got impossible big at that, swinging their hands inbetween their walking bodies. They were both fools, fools in love but they didn't care.
He talked her through the basics even though she already knew it all. But she loved to listen to it, listen to him talk about it with so much passion, blabber about the teams, the rules, the best. Everything he knew he loaded off to her, Alice more then content to walk around the paddock like this, hand in hand listening to his voice.

2017 Hampshire
She watched as Lando helped his mother to set the table in their old summer-house. The tradition continuing on. His hands balanced the plates as his mother directed him to what should go where.
She couldn't pin down the moment when Lando, her gullible dork of a friend became Lando. Lando who got all the girls falling at his feets with his riddicolously attractive smile and brown curls. Lando who got her to feel more than platonic feelings, Lando that got her all hot and bothered just being him, Lando.
But it was still the same Lando who had picked her flowers, held her when she was sad or confused, shared her highs and been there all the time. He was the same but with some additonal things, things she didn't exactly mind.
His eyes met hers over the table, his face of concentration turning into a teasing smirk as he winked at her.
Alice couldn't help but to giggle, moving off the grass and to the table where him and Cisca were talking about something. Lando had currently signed all season in formula 3 with Carlin. But he had been home for the weekend before going off again.
"Hello" Lando smiled like a dork as she reached the two, his smile going over to her, smiling just as widely as his arms reached her body to pull her close. "Are you coming to my next race?" He asked lowly, smile breaking out again as she nodded "Of course" Alice did in difference from Lando still go to school, her goal meant hard school studying for many years forward whilst Lando's goal meant no school studying but a lot of experience gathering. It was different but it didn't bother them. Alice studied, Lando helped her best he could, usually more distracting than helping but he was also useful to use as someone to juggle ideas with and have as a listener when she pracctised her speaches or read through her essays. In return Alice listened to him ramble about motorsports, went to every race she could and simply was there for him when he needed her to be.
Despite their young age they were mature in their relationship and more than anything, they were serious about eachother.

She watched him from a distance, watching how he went around with his friends, joking laughing. It was formula two now, a new world from forumla 3 in some ways but the biggest difference were the publicity.
The fanbase that had before been small had explded as he startde to do well in formula 2 and especially since he started to appear on the internet via social media, interviews and youtube clips. It had exploded so fast neither of them had gathered what had happened.
What Alice had gathered by now though was that this new world of the sport he loved so dearly made him more and more distant. Suddenly he cared more about his appearance than her, cared more about his image than her. It showed in so many situations, him declining to hang out with her to hang out with some friends, telling her she didn't need to come because it was better for his image if they wasn't seen together all the time.
Alice didn't know if it was better for his image or better for keeping the girls that currenly circled aorund him.
He rarely spent any time with her anymore and it was fine Alice thought, but the feeling that he was embarrassed of her, that he didn't want people to know about her or their relationship was something she felt really hurtful.
The most confusing part of it all was how different it was. When it was only them he was the same, the small soft little boy who picked her flowers and helped braid her hair but when they were with others or in public he was someone completely different. One who pushed her away, ignored her and laughed at her.
It was all getting a bit too much. In the begining she could wave it off by him being new to the experience and fame, having to navigate his way around it but it had gone too far. And it felt too much in her heart.

"I think... I think we should stop seeing eachother"
Lando's words caught something deep within her, felt like a shot right at her heart as she looked at the boy.
"What?" Her words came out weak, like a faint whisper. "I think we should break up, or whatever" he spoke, this time more direct, less feelings in them, more harshness.
Break up or whatever
They had never put a label on it, they were them, nothing more nothing less. But now he wanted to be nothing?
"Why?" she croaked out not getting where it was all coming from. "I want to see other people" he deadpanned, no emotion in his voice as he looked her straight in the eyes.
She felt defeated, nothing to fight with, nothing to fight for. Because he looked so sure, he looked so distant from the person she knew so she had no choice but to let him go, regardless of the feeling of her heart breaking into pieces in her chest.
But she got numb, feelings she could deal with later, she did not want to look weak when he looked like this, acted like this.
"Okay" was all she said, dropping the flower she held in her hand and turning on her heel.

"Congrats" she smiled carefully at the cheery boy. Things hadn't been good lately, stifff and tense but this was his long time goal, his dream and there was no way Alice wouldn't congratulate him on it.
Even if he broke her heart.
His eyes glistened as he pulled her into a warm hug, smiling into her hair. "Thank you, really"
Lando was happy, and Alice were happy that he was happy because it felt like it had always done. He spoke about his contract, about the races infront and she listened, just like she had always done. Taking it in and gently quzzing him further. She didn't want to push too hard.
His smile grew more and more as they talked, he even came so far as to ask how she was doing, he hadn't done that in a long time but just as before, in the end of their relationship things changed fast.
He hadn't told her he'd met anyone new, although they had barely spoken at all lately, only the odd hello on their family dinners. Alice felt it was too early for that but she could see it from miles away.
His eyes flickered around as the tall girl moved towards them and she knew it before she was even there. The lump in her stomach exploding into a sick feeling.
Lando fumbled nervously as he introuduced the two, Alice's eyes stuck on her beutiful face and incredible body. She was everything in one package, one stunning package.
"When did you meet?" Alice asked, voice sweetly soft, trying to disguse any hiddden intention but by the way Lando couldn't meet her eyes she already knew it was before they had ended.
"Oh, I don't know, I think it was last year yeah?"
Last year
Lando didn't answer, didn't look at Alice, he couldn't.
"Oh wow that't nice, and it was really nice to meet you but I have to go"
"Okay, nice to meet you too!" she smiled cheerily.
Lando catched up to her before she could leave the grounds completely, grabbing her arm to stop her.
"Alice" "Don't tocuh me" she snapped, feeling too many emotions at once to control it. "I'm sorry" he tried but she just waved him off
"Save it" she bit
"Don't be like this Alice, come on" "What? You met her a year ago? When we were still together?" "I did nothing with her until we broke up!" "NO but you LIKED HER?!"
Lando looked down "I don't know"
"Fuck off!
"Stop it, youre making a big deal out of this when it dosen't have to be, we broke up I found someone new" "I-I I don't even know what to say" she spoke, shaking her head at the boy she thought she knew but so clearly didn't
"What did you think Alice? That we would stay in love our whole life and get married with many kids?" "I-I don't know" she whispered because maybe that had been what she thought, or at leat hoped. More importantly she thought they were real, and that they had real feelings. But maybe it was just her.

Alice didn't cheer nor did she congratulate. She stood next to Cisca in the Mclaren garage watching the race. She was there for Cisca and only Cisca. She suposed she had forced Lando to give her a pass as he probably much rather would have wanted to give one to his new girlfriend than Alice. But his mother was good at talking and she guessed she had skills with her son as well. Having dangled the pass in her face as Lando had agreed to give her one.
Lando glanced over at her and gave her a faint smile but he got nothing in return, just a stone face that made him advert his gaze again.
He knew why though, the very reason swinging with her long hair before stepping forward to kiss him, right in front of her. It shouldn't but it made his heart ache, he didn't know if it was because it was Alice or if it was because he was a decent human being, he doubted that though.
"Wow babe! Your first points amazing!" She grinned at him. He forced himself to tip his lips into a forced smile "Thank you babe"
He could se in his imagination how Alice would scrunch her face up in disgust. She always hated those nicknames.
"How should we celebrate?" she asked, a hopeful look on her face. She wanted to go out. Lando wanted to go home, eat dinner with his family and Alice, sit down the water with Alice and talk about everything and anything. But those days were gone and now he had a new life.
"Clubbing?" he suggested, smiling as her face lit up.
"Perfect!" she smiled, turning away from him and to Alice and his mother who stood chatting, not paying any attention at all to him or at least not by the looks of it.
"Lando, we are going home. Are you coming with us for our regular big celebration?" His mother asked and he dreaded having to answer
"No, sorry. We are going out" he voiced softly, watching his mother's smile falter as a disapointed scowl took over her face "Out?"
He didn't even dare to look at Alice, knowing she would look at him with murder in her eyes, not liking his answer.
"Okay, well it was so good seeing you" his mother smiled, hugging him close before giving him one more loook and walking out the garages. He had excpected Alice to follow his mother out but she stayed put, making him feel a bit uneasy.
Alice smiled at her as she gave her a soft wave, telling Lando to catch up with her. Alice's smile fell the second her eyes landed on Lando.
He was thinking about aproaching but decided against it, should he go? As his mind was reeling with options and things he could say Alice was standing in front of him with an uncharacteristic frown on her face.
"You are really choosing clubbing before your family?" she spoke, her words harsh but it was nothing compared to her tone, filled with venom and hard as ice.
Lando tasted different aproaches on his tongue before, of course choosing the worst one. Anger.
"You're just angry I choose her before you"
The words struck, he could see that and in a twisted way it settled something inside him. "This has nothing to do with me" she spoke back, her voice even colder than before.
"I already said I was not gonna come to any celebrations, seriously Lando, who do you think you are?" He swallowed, didn't know what to say next but she beat him to it "And since when do you even go clubbing?" her face twisted with distaste. She had never liked clubbing a lot, only rarely could she enjoy it briefly but Lando had had no problem with that. Not a fan of the crowded rooms either but now, now he wanted to make his words hurt as much as hers did.
"Well maybe that's something I can now feel free to do" he spoke harshly, watching the wave of emotion on her face as she shook her head.
"I never, ever stopped you from it"
Lando shrugged "Didn't matter"
Alice shook her head, baffled. Where had Lando gone? Because this wasn't him.
"I was just going here to ask what the fuck is wrong with you. Your mother traveled here to watch you, to support you but you can't even take the time to celebrate with them over dinner? Go to the fucking club after dinner what do I care! But you don't treat family like that''
"What do you know about family?" The words left a bitter taste in his mouth but they had already tumbled out
"Apparently more than you" she bit and maybe she was right but it didn't stop his words from tumbling out.
"Just stop it Alice, you can't control me like before, let me be"
Alice swallowed, he could practically see the emotions swimming in her eyes but it was his doing. No matter how long it had gone he still hated to be the one that made her look like that, so fragile and so hurt.
"I'm sorry if that's how you felt" she whispered before leaving him feeling like the jerk he was.

Her fingers scrolled through the profile, clicking in to one then the other. Scrolling through comments and reactions.
It was like an addiction, once she'd started she couldn't stop.
She was clicking into his pictures, trying to make out the people he was with like she had any reason to do so.
Her eyes fleeted over it all, drinking it in as this was all she could have. Sulking over her ex 'whatever' and the life he was now living.
Her eyes locked on a particular photo, he was on the podium, the widest of smiles on his face and a cup in his hands.
She would have called herself pathetic for sitting here dreaming of the guy who broke her heart but she couldn't help but to look at the photos and dream of what once used to be.

Stiff was a light word to put it. Everyone felt awkvard as the two 22-year old's adjusted their gaze's over the room. Who's idea it had been to put on a family reunion dinner Alice didn't know but whoever it was had started an bad idea.
She hadn't seen Lando face to face in what felt like forever and it was just as unplesant as she would have thought it would be. Horrible.
"So Alice, how is studying going?" Cisca asked sweetly
"Well it's going great, we haven't completed any major essays or studies yet but it's really interesting so I'm happy" Alice spoke, looking at Cisca who held the most comforting smile ever.
"That's fantastic honey, I always knew you would make out what you wanted, you beutiful soul!" she all but squeked making the young girl feel warm inside out "Thank you"
"So Lando, what about you?" Alice's mom asked, just as politely. Alice busied herself grabbing some more potatoes in the slowest movements she could muster as Lando spoke them very detailed through the season so far. He told them all about the car, how it felt, his teammate, his team, the last race, others on the grid, all of it.
It was a bit weird how something she used to find so intruiging, now made her feel numb. Like a big lump balling up in her stomach. "And how is your girlfriend?" She continued, everyone holding their breath
Lando looked uncomfortable as his eyes fleeted around the table not staying to long anywhere. "Well, eh. We broke up" he revealed, making Alice look at him for the first time in what felt like forever.
"Oh I'm so sorry honey" Alice's mother spoke again but he just waved it off, giving her a reassuring smile "No it's fine. I guess we realized how different we were and how different the things we want are. It was no biggie, mutual decision" he shrugged, not seeeming to care to much about it and something about that made it twist in Alice's stomach.
"And how about you Alice? Your mother told me you were seeing someone?"
Alice and Lando both looked like they were gonna faint with shock. Alice coughing on her potatoes, waving her hand as she took a sip from her glass.
"Noo" she chuckled once she recovered. "It was nothing serious at all, just a bit of...fun" she spoke awkvardly, something about that sentence making Lando's stomach twist unpleasantly.
"Aha" Cisca smiled, her lips twitching as she tried to not chuckle at both the youngsters uncomfortableness.
"I hope you mean fun like jumping into the sea and giggling in the grass" Alice's mother mused, looking at her with amusedly narrowed eyes.
"Of course, that's what I mean..." Alice giggled, hiding behind her tall glass. "Because I have never heard you even say you lost your virginity"
Alice choked at that, spluttering her drink over herself and the table as the others laughed at her.
"Well" she breathed
"Alice! You have but you have not told me?!" Her mother said sarcastically. She had figured she had, they had talked about it vaguely since she had wanted to know it was okay and all and she had also not so sneakily gotten a condom or two plus she had asked for her mother to hellp her with the pills.
"Maybe?" "There is no hard feeling honey" She started, tone warm "And Cisca has told me all about it"
This time it was Lando who choked on his drink, coughing desperately until his airways were free again. He had not been as secretive as Alice apparently had been. He had told his mother the next day about it. Not in detail of course but still.
"Oh really? What did he say?" Alice snickered, throwing a look on Lando who's face had creeped up with colour. "Oh not too much, just that you had had sex and it had been ok"
"OK?!" Alice gasped at Lando who giggled in his hands, face red as he giggled at the awkvardness of it alll
Alice couldn't help but to laugh at his face but stopped abruptly when she realized what she was doing, laughing with him?
No
"No I'm joking it was hideous" she deadpanned, their mothers snickered but Lando looked at her with a glare.
She cracked a sarcastic smile and engrossed herself in the next conversation floating, ignoring his gaze for the rest of the evening.

It was like an addiction, once he'd started he couldn't stop. Obsessing over her life even though he wasn't in it anymore.

Alice's hair moved in the windy air of Silverstone. His eyes wandered over her, drinking her in.
He had missed her, really missed her.
Being without her was a test on it's own, one he thoughts was nesecary to live how he wanted, but now he realized he wouldn't ever want to live without her.
It was too late, of course. He knew that, everybody knew that. He had completely wrecked everything they had and shared because of a few years trying to be someone else.
He had been fine though, moved on because he knew that's what she had done, but his heart struggled all the same everytime he saw her or even thought about her.
His mom had tried to push him towards her, saying that he needed to apologize. Lando had never understood why. A simple sorry wouldn't change a thing of what he had done, it was not gonna make anything better.
A sorry was simply not enough.
Despite that he itched to say it, beacuse he was sorry, even if that changed nothing.
-
A GP sunday and Alice hadn't had it in her heart to refuse Cisca's pleas for her to come with her and watch. She had been there more times since they broken up 'or whatever' and it had been fine.
But this time it felt different. From the moment she stepped into the paddock Lando's eyes were on her. Nothing unusual but his eyes were something else, held something else deep within them.
It hadn't even been half an hour after the race when he aproached her carefully. His eyes fleeting around as he stopped in front of her, hand combing through his wet curls.
"Hi" he breathed, meeting her eyes a short second.
"Hi" she answered, her heart picking up in her chest for no reason at all.
Why did it still do that?
"Good race today, congratulations" she smiled weakly making his heart grow wings. "Thank you". He was on the podium, second place, a good weekened for Mclaren, for sure.
"How you been?" he stuttered out, trying to be as normal as possible as she looked at him. "Good, you?" she replied shortly, his breath catching in his throat "Fine" he got out, his words stuck in his throat, sounding like he had just coughed them up. "I- I know this is not gonna change anything and I know I've been a proper dick but I still wanted to.." he murmured, his hand reaching into his suit pocket and bringing out a small blue little flower. Blue ones where her favoruite, it had always been.
"A flower?"
His eyes burned with sadness and regret
"I really am sorry"
Alice's eyes flickered from the sad looking guy and his handpicked beutiful flower, wishing it was enough, wishing it was as easy to forgive him now as it had been when they were small and Lando had teased her or made her cry. But it wasn't and Lando knew that too.
No amount of flowers could possibly make up for this and it absolutely shattered him.

The Tragedy of being Second Best - Steve Randle
I think @alittlebitofloveliness brought this up back in September but I want to say something else on it. (Thanks for bringing it up by the way!) Personally, Steve Randle is a hard character for me to write because of how similar I feel to him. Like Steve, I have spent a lot of my life bitter and angry, feeling inadequate and second best. This fic was kind of hard for me to write and half of it might just be me projecting but I wanted to write something about Steve Randle and everything that he represents. Enjoy 💚💚
Steve has always had a hard time with keeping his temper.
This isn't news to anyone. He was pretty sure he had come out of the womb spitting curses and ready to punch his way through life.
It didn’t help that his father hated him. The bruises and bloodied lips he's had since four years old have proven that. His dad is a drunk who beats on him, so Steve learned from a young age how to stay gone. Steve was never is fathers first choice, he isn't even his second choice. Depending on the day, his dad would probably trade him for a six-pack.
Steve was nobody's first choice. It was just one more thing to be angry about.
His mother was a pretty woman. He knew because of the way people used to talk about her. The way people still talk about her.
Though, looking back, he never had any pretty memories of her. She left when he was in kindergarten. His dad told him it was his fault and of course Steve believed him. He can still remember flashes of nasty conversation exchanged with her. Why are you so angry? Nobody is this angry and bitter at six years old. If he thinks about her words for too long it makes him want to throw something. His dad said she left for California, she wanted to find the beach or something like that. Steve figured that she chose a state over her own son. Steve was nobody's first choice.
Every time he thinks about either of them,  his veins fill with fire and his chest constricts.
Then there's Soda. He can still remember the day that they met. Steve with his black eye and scuffed shoes and Soda with his hand-me-down backpack and earth-shattering smile. How quickly they became friends and how quickly everything changed. He was welcome at the Curtis home and more than that they actually wanted him around. Soda always invited him over and seemed to want to be around him at school. Despite what his parents said.
He was glad to have Sodapop around too. Nothing about Soda can make him angry. Irritated? Of course, but never downright angry.  Not like everything else in the world.
The two of them never could be still for long. They were always getting up to something. Like the time they hid all the chalk out in the school yard so they wouldn't have to do math that afternoon or the time they put a thumb tack on the substitute teacher's chair so she would leave.
They were always moving; moving in tandem, so fast and so hard that the picture was blurring at all the edges.
More than anything, Soda seemed to be the only one around who was not only able to tolerate his biting tongue, but actually liked it. Because what did Steve have if not his biting tongue, fighting fists, and fire in his veins? He had grown up with nothing but those to protect him. Even his mother had seen it.
When they got older, things got more complicated. Soda was still Steve's best friend in the whole world. He was charismatic, outgoing, understanding, beautiful, and funny. Steve knew this but as they got older, everyone else seemed to realize this too. Steve felt that familiar anger and jealousy creep in. The same one his mom had pointed out so early. The same one that had led Steve to beg for his fathers attention as he drank himself half to death. Steve had always needed some sort of attention, now it was just Soda's instead of his father.
So when those others started to notice how great Soda was, he started competing against them.
Every time they would get talking to someone at a party or a drag race or even school, people would never come over to talk to Steve. They came to talk to Soda. His beautiful shining best friend who is everyone's first choice. And once again Steve was left drowning as he realized yet again that he was nobody's first choice.
The worst part was that all of it made sense. Why would people not want to talk to Soda? Why would they not look through Steve? As if he wasn't there? Instead focusing on the charismatic golden teenager with the biggest heart in all of Tulsa. And why would they not?
Instead of saying anything or god forbid, bringing it up to Soda, he got angry. Packing it in like a suitcase with too many clothes. And because of that tightly packed anger came guilt, because Steve shouldn't feel angry about people wanting to be around Soda. Especially when he wanted to be around Soda.
Steve is reduced to the second best, and he deserves it. All these feelings mixing into a nasty cocktail of bitterness. Wasn't that what his mother always told him he did best? Was he still his momma's bitter little boy? So he turned bitter and stopped pulling his punches. Instead, throwing himself into the things he was good at, like fixing cars and fighting soc's and all the other things that aren't worth anything to be good at.
Two weeks after he turned sixteen, he got a job at a DX gas station. It felt good to get that job. The manager liked how much he knew about cars and was impressed with how good Steve seemed to be able to fix them. He was constantly busy and could always do something with his hands. He was so distracted that he hardly had time to think. To think about his shitty father beating him at home or how Soda was so much better at everything than him or how his mother was right about him or how he was nobody’s first choice at all.
He liked working there but he especially liked that it got him out of the house and got him money. It was one good thing that he had.
Then everything turned bitter. He did it to himself really. For the three months till Soda turned sixteen, he talked about wanting to work at the DX with Steve. His parents wouldn’t let him until he turned sixteen. Steve encouraged this, half of him thinking it would be fun and the other half thinking about how he would be second best at something yet again. The guilt ate at him, but still he kept encouraging.
True to both of their words, Soda got the job and things changed once again. What was it that Ponyboy had said before? People were drawn to Soda like flies to honey? Something like that. Steve never said made a point to have a conversation with the kid anyway. He was always annoyed with his lack of focus and his constant hero worship of Sodapop. Though to be fair, he was annoyed with everyone’s hero worship of Soda.
How will this endless cycle of bitterness and anger end?
The short answer? It probably wouldn’t. Steve would probably always bear those hungry flying fists and spiteful tongue like a cross. Like a weight, draped unflatteringly across the scars in his face. He had always been a fighter. Hurting other people was often the only outlet he had.
“Steve..!” The voice sounds far away. “Steve..! You have to stop…” Suddenly he is being shoved down. “Steve..!” The world is exploding in angry red, his muscles are tense and he turns again, ready to fight. The voice sounds so loud and Sodapop is right in his face. “Steve, what the hell happened?”
“Soda we gotta go man. Get him up and let's go.” That’s Two-Bit. Suddenly Steve looks down. There is a guy laying on the ground covered in blood. He looks half dead with the way someone beat him up. Steve’s knuckles are busted open and bleeding but they don’t sting like usual. He can’t feel anything and his head is still far away. Soda shakes him a little and they hit the ground running.
They duck inside a greaser joint and head for the bathroom. Soda turns to him, looking sick. Two-Bit starts washing the blood off of his face. But Steve is still angry and ready to fight. His body is tense, like a spring that’s been wound too tight. His fists are pulsating and he’s angry. It’s the only conscious thought his brain can come up with. He’s angry.
“Steve…” Soda is at a loss for words and Steve doesn’t know why. The only thing he can feel is anger. Got red anger as a scream threatens to tear through his throat. His hands want to keep hitting.
“What Soda’s trying to say is you beat the guy half to death Stevie. I don’t even know if he was breathing when we left.”
“Shit…” It’s all Steve can say.
It wasn’t the last time it would happen either. Sometimes he could control it, but sometimes he didn't even realize what he was doing. Steve would beat the guy half to death before Soda or Two-Bit or even Dallas would pull him off. It was like a red haze would go over his eyes and he would operate on auto-pilot. Letting anger take control as a form of self protection.
It had worked when he was a child and his father would beat him. He wasn’t sure if it was working now, but it was all he had.
So he bore those hungry flying fists and spiteful tongue… not like a cross but like an anchor. He would be strong where Soda couldn’t. He would protect this kids when Johnny and Ace couldn’t protect themselves.
So he would try to fight, but not so uselessly like he had done all his life. Now, he would fight with passion and purpose. He knew he’d spend the rest of his life fighting; the only difference now was that he would fight for something. Fight for his gang and his sister and Sodapop and all those little greasers who were too young to fight for themselves. He would never stop fighting but he would start fighting for something good. Maybe his mother was right about him being angry, but she wasn’t right about why.
Steve wasn’t angry for no reason. It was an important distinction.
Steve was angry because of his situation and the shit he’d seen in his life, the shit he’d let his sister go through. He was angry because of his abusive father and the way he’d always been second best.
But most of all, Steve was angry because they deserved more. Jonny deserved to not be so scared all the time and Ace deserved to have a childhood filled with love and Soda deserved a girlfriend that wouldn’t break his heart and Darry deserved to go to college and Dallas deserved to have family and Two-Bit deserved not to drink to escape and Ponyboy deserved his parents alive. They all deserved so much more.
And Steve was angry about all of it. Greasers were used to having nothing and Steve was no exception. He’d grown up fighting with nothing and nobody on his side. His anger was his only constant companion. Keeping him warm at night when his mother left and protecting Ace from whatever violence took place that day. The same hot anger that has burned holes through every memory he has.
Steve had his anger… as well as his flying fists and snarky comments.
So from that anger, Steve would fight. For his friends and his family and for a chance. Because though he may think he’s second best at everything, there is one thing he’s the best at. Steve Randle always gets up and fights for what he believes in.

Gen (non-romantic) fics recs: DC, Humour
last rec list was not exactly happy fics, so to offset it, have funny ones:
Fandom: DC, batfam. Theme: Humour (most some also tear your heart out or engage in subtle character building, but you'll laugh while you cry) Humour is very widespread in fic (…in some fandoms at least), ranging from humour woven in the writing style itself, to situational absurd (crack), to making the reader laugh about absolutely horrifying shit (while still acknowledging how awful it is; which is rarer, I think, in non-fic), to absolutely unhinged character reactions (to more I don't have in mind right now), so here, a small homage to that.
The Lone Ranger Never Had to Deal with Bruce Wayne, by @theskeptileptic (https://archiveofourown.org/works/51476074) Chapters 6/6, 25.522 words G, No Archive Warnings Apply
Main Characters: Tim Drake, Bruce Wayne
Official summary: Tim is an independent, clever, and super mature eleven-year-old. Unfortunately, his dopey neighbor, Bruce, can’t seem to understand that. When he decides to disappear on a “solo camping trip” and run away to Canada, he figures it’s the perfect plan that will make everybody happy. He didn’t expect the Waynes would tag along with him and ruin everything. A six-chaptered tale filled with identity shenanigans, s’mores, soon-to-be-brothers, and a kid who is in desperate need of a new family.
Why I love it: This is. Hilarious. The perfect mix of very competent Tim and him still very much being an 11-years-old. Himbo Bruce Wayne who just so happens to totally accidentally run into Tim several times to innocently inquire about his parents' whereabouts. The horrifying fact of what Tim is actually doing and how he thinks, in his very logical way (and the horrifying fact that his parents agree with him).
Excerpts: from: [email protected] to: [email protected] Mr. Wayne, Timothy told me you stopped by earlier today. I am sorry I didn’t get to talk with you. My thyroid was acting up and I was sleeping. Timothy is a good kid. I can make sure he’s safe skateboarding so there is no need to worry. Have a good day! Sincerely, The Nanny
from: [email protected] to: [email protected] The Nanny, Thank you for your email last week. Timothy is most definitely a good kid. One of the best. I saw him at the Army Supply Store this afternoon and he mentioned you would be taking him to Cheesequake State Park to meet a friend this weekend? My boys and I are heading that way, so why don’t we save you a trip. We’ll make sure Timothy is taken care of. If you need anything at all, for any reason, please call me at this number: 9088780078. This is my cell phone and I answer it at all hours, no matter what. Nothing is too small or too much of a bother to pick up for. Anything that you need, Timothy’s Nanny, please call. Sincerely, Bruce Wayne - “Anyway, I was on my way to the course, and I realized your father and I haven’t gotten a chance to really ‘hang’, as you kids say, and I had a late tee time, so I thought I’d invite him along.” Mr. Wayne’s teeth were bright and Tim wondered if he used some sort of diamond paste on them. He looked around Tim’s shoulder, as if he wanted to see inside the mansion better. Tim hadn’t turned on any of the lights on account of his shitty night, so the early fall haze that Bristol was so well known for didn’t do much for his visibility. “I’m sorry, sir, you just missed him.” A pause. “Well, that’s ok, son. Why don’t you get your mom and I’ll give her a message? I’m sure you’ve got things to do.” He looked at Tim vapidly, smile still firmly in place. “I’m afraid she’s not here right now either. Shopping.” Tim gritted his teeth and went to close the door. Mr. Wayne’s huge ham hands (why were they so large?) stopped it before it slammed. He chuckled and Tim winced. “Your nanny, then.” Tim wasn’t sure, but thought the question sounded more strained than Mr. Wayne’s usual flavor of airheadedness. “She’s sleeping.” “At eleven in the morning?” “She has a thyroid problem. I’ll let them all know you stopped by.” Tim pushed the door closed but Mr. Wayne had somehow entered his foyer while he was speaking. “I’ll write them a note. They can call me when they get back.” He inched closer towards Tim, who sidestepped him before he could ruffle his hair.

Ain't No Compass, Ain't No Map, by @ebjameston (https://archiveofourown.org/works/38048365) Chapters: 9/9, 51.863 words T, No Archive Warnings Apply
Main Characters: Jason Todd, Dick Grayson, Tim Drake
Official summary: CPS Agent, pointing at Tim Drake: We need to take him with us Red Hood: He's fine where he is CPS: He's a minor Hood: Timbo, you a minor? Tim: Can't prove it CPS: I mean, I can. There are records – Tim, who has just finishing hacking CPS to remove his own file: Oh really, tell me more about these records +++ A CPS agent gets sent to investigate a tip that Tim Drake has been abandoned by his parents and is living with the Red Hood. The CPS agent leaves with no Tim Drake, a date with Red Hood's lieutenant, and an intern who's promising to fix the IT systems at his office. It's a weird day for Theo.
Why I love it: This is probably the first (non-crossover) DC fic I read, and to date still one of my favorites. It's. Listen. It's from the point of view of a Child Protective Services agent. Who, given his whole deal is to Protect Children, has Opinions about the Robins. And interacts - unknowingly - with them when they're grown (identity porn! Banter!). And he likes them! And they like him! But they have… differing opinions. And I absolutely love it. So. Many. Feels. And humour. It's 80% jokes and 70% feels and 50% social commentary about the canon and 20% plot and 40% fluff and 30% angst and some parts are all of that at once.
Excerpt: “Nightwing, wait, serious question,” Theo says. “About when you were baby Robin.” Max’s fingers tense up a bit on Theo’s elbow, and some of the earlier tension creeps back into Nightwing’s frame. “Yes?” “Did the Batmobile have a car seat?” “Did the what have a what ,” Nightwing says. “I’ve seen your stats from when you were just getting started,” Theo says. “You weren’t anywhere close to 4-foot-9. You would’ve needed a booster seat for at least the first two years you were Robin, so.” “So, did the Batmobile have a carseat,” Nightwing repeats faintly. Theo gets out his phone to take notes. “Yes. That is what I am asking.” “Buddy,” Hood says. “Most of the Batmobiles don’t even have seatbelts.” “How would you even know that?” Bernard asks.

IRIS Log #1548, by @deadchannelradio (https://archiveofourown.org/works/51647209) Chapters: 1/1, 8531 Words T, No Archive Warnings Apply
Main Characters: whole batfam
Official summary: A Disclaimer From Your Friendly Neighborhood Oracle: The following is a transcript of Patrol Communications Audio written by state of the art transcription technology, IRIS (Interpretation of Recorded Intelligence Software). IRIS was created to provide easily searchable records, automatically, and eliminate the need to transcribe each patrol audio log manually. That being said, IRIS is still experimental, and may not always be entirely accurate. - (01:25) Red Hood: (Mild static) (Out of breath, slurred) You motherfuckers. Put some fuckin- (01:25) Batman: (Shaking) Red Hood- (01:25) Red Hood: Shut up. Put some fucking respect. On my name. Start fucking copying me. I just got thrown fucking. Um. 40 feet. Into a fucking uh. What's it. Ditch. I'm still fucking conscious. (01:25) Batman: Red Hood, do not move, we're en route- (01:25) Red Hood: What'll I win if I stand up. (01:25) Batman: (Loud) Do not stand up.
Why I love it: The format (transcription of comms) is fun. Also it's. Just. Really funny? The… energy of it? I mean just read the excerpts honestly.
Excerpt: (01:34) Nightwing: Don’t get mad, Red. He’s got a concussion. (01:34) Red Hood: (Agreeably) I am all bonked up. (Laughter: Nightwing) Hey. Cass. Cassie. Is my leg fucked. The right one. (01:34) Blackbat: It. (Pause, 3 seconds) (Reading) I am not your medical provider and can’t diagnose injuries or illness. Please ask your doctor when you are under their care. (01:34) Red Hood: Oh. Um, okay. Can you tell me as buddies? Not as my doctor. (Laughter: Spoiler, Red Robin) Just as buddies. (01:35) Blackbat: …Super busted. Bad. As buddies. (01:35) Batman: Blackbat. We are not medical- (01:35) Red Hood: She said as buddies. It’s fine. (01:35) Spoiler: (Laughing) The as buddies legal loophole.

Bang, bang, by Ididloveyou_once (@ididloveyou) (https://archiveofourown.org/works/30246978) Chapters: 1/1, 5.563 words T, Chose Not to Use Archive Warnings (an accidental gunshot wound played for laughs)
Main Characters: Tim Drake, Jason Todd
Official summary: ‘You shot me!’ Jason gasped, stunned, ‘Holy shit, you actually shot me.’ Tim’s eyes widened and he froze. They stared at each other for a second, dumbstruck and then- ‘Don’t tell Bruce.’Or: The family enjoy a normal movie night. Except Jason has a gunshot wound and Tim’s the only one who knows and oh- that’s because Tim’s the one who shot him and they really, really need to find a way to leave before anyone finds out.
Why I love it: Hmmm okay so maybe I really like a good Jason & Tim relationship. But objectively. This is great. Peak siblings relationships. The threat of Getting In Trouble forcing an emergency alliance between two mutually annoyed siblings who scramble to hide something? Peak comedy.
Excerpt: ‘Okay, sorry. I didn’t mean it like that either,’ he pinched the bridge of his nose, ‘I just mean. Don’t worry about me being in pain. I’m fine. And don’t worry about looking like an asshole. You shot me, you already look like an asshole. But that’s fine because now we’re even.’ Jason sighed at the kid’s sour expression. So his words of reassurance needed some work, sue him.

Into the Brighter Night, by @shoalsea (https://archiveofourown.org/works/20935463) Chapters: 12/12, 162,894 words G, No Archive Warnings Apply
Main Characters: Tim Drake, whole batfam, Young Justice team
Official summary: When an unknown enemy threatens Robin, Gotham's vigilantes come together to keep him safe. Unfortunately, they're protecting the wrong Robin. Or: Tim Drake plans his own rescue. Things get complicated.
Why I love it: Oooooh not just batfam this time. Tim is way too competent, and the Young Justice have his back (and a lot of resentment towards the batfam). Hyperactive Young Justice energy, Very Good Characterization, miscommunication (as in Bruce -the whole batfam really- is trying but they're super bad at clearly expressing feelings). And the tone of it? The writing? Hilarious and rips your heart out. This is super interesting interconnected character dynamics (with the batfam and Tim's team that's so many more different relationships than usual) and a deep look at canon events, all of it wrapped in hilarious dialogue. One of my fave Tim-centric fics, and I've read some very good ones.
Excerpt: [Impulse on a long distance call with the batfam - minus Tim] Jay makes a disbelieving sound. “You’re telling me that Red Robin—Mr. Responsibility himself—helped you hide and maintain a secret spaceship for years? Seriously?” “Uh, yeah? Duh?” “No offense,” Duke says, “but that doesn’t really sound like the guy we know.” Bruce sighs. Stephanie huffs out a laugh. Impulse just looks unimpressed. “Are we talking about the same person? Robin numero tres, currently Red? The same guy who once hid an extra Batmobile in the batarang budget and shipped it to California in secret? The same guy who founded Young Justice, an unauthorized vigilante group of teens that started out with no adult supervision? And lied to the Justice League and the government to keep Secret safe?” “Secret?” Duke says at the same time Jay sputters out, “He stole a whole Batmobile?” “More like embezzled,” Impulse says. “But yeah, dude, it’s Rob. I know he gives off the straight-and-narrow vibe, like, 90% of the time he’s interacting with the public or authority figures, but that’s mostly because it’s way, waaaay easier to get away with stuff if you don't ‘openly project an air of defiance.’” “Oh my god,” Stephanie says. “He’s given you that speech too?” “He’s given us multiple versions of that speech,” Impulse says. Stephanie’s turned away from the screen now and is explaining to Duke, “Red Robin is kind of the definition of ‘I do what I want,’ but most of the time what he wants to do is at least nominally reasonable or responsible, so no one cares.” “And when somebody does care,” Impulse says, “you just gotta be sneaky and smart. Comply until their backs are turned, you know? I mean, even with the Titans we—what?” he pauses, spinning his chair, clearly distracted by something off-screen. “No, I’m just talking to the Bats. I think there’s a whole flock of them.” Conner Kent wanders into view, towelling off his hair and wearing what looks like some kind of maintenance jumper. “‘Sup,” he says to the camera, leaning in. “Superman’s not there, is he?” “Nope,” Impulse says. “Thank god. Where’s Rob?” “Batnap.” Conner puts his hands on his hips. “Dude. Weren’t you supposed to wake him up?” Impulse spins in his chair again. “Wonder Girl said not to.” “What, and he agreed?” “No. He might have been unconscious at the time. Which, technically, means Wonder Girl is in charge.” Conner groans. “He’s gonna kill you.” Turning to the camera, he adds, “Look, sorry about this, I’ll go get him.” “Heynowaitaminute,” Impulse says. “Listen. I’m the captain, you gotta at least hear me out!” Conner rolls his eyes, but he doesn’t move. “Everything is still going according to plan, okay? Rob did in fact say that we should one hundred percent wake him up as soon as we could get a call through. True. But Wonder Girl said to let him sleep. And he definitely needs it.” “Yeah, but, again, he’s gonna be pissed if—” “Listen. I have thought this through.” When Conner just looks skeptical, he adds, “I have! I worked it out logically. See, if we wake up Rob, Wondy’s gonna be pissed off. At us. Right now. If we don’t wake him up, he’s gonna be pissed off later and he’s gonna be mad at her, not us. Therefore, we should do what Wonder Girl says.”

Beef Consommé, by @vamillepudding (https://archiveofourown.org/works/42348438) Chapters: 2/2; 14.230 words T, Chose Not To Use Warnings
Main Characters: Tim Drake, Jason Todd, Dick Grayson
Official summary: Parenting is Bruce's thing, and Jason isn't planning on messing with that. But when Bruce fails to spot the countless red flags about Tim's home life, it falls to Jason to step up. Of course it does. Because he's literally the only one in his family who knows how to be responsible, and if Dick disagrees, he can suck it.
Why I love it: I have a weakness for the "Dick and Jason team up and adopt Tim" trope. Also, I love Jason's voice in it. (and this fic is very funny but I feel like I'm repeating myself)
Excerpts: “Pizza?” Tim repeats, sounding hopeful. Jason is on the verge of telling him to go screw himself, but then he starts wondering how long Tim has been in his apartment and whether he ate dinner before he came here. Probably not. Did he eat lunch? Should Jason ask? What would Dick do? “Fine,” he says eventually. “But I’m picking the toppings, and you can’t have dessert.” There’s a beat. “I didn’t want dessert,” Tim says, voice taking on a bewildered edge. “What are you talking about?” - It’s Wednesday evening and Jason is getting pizza. Dick’s waiting back in Jason’s apartment, because growing up with Bruce has him used to getting waited on hand and foot, and apparently he thinks Jason is his own personal servant or something. It’s oppression, is what it is. “It’s not oppression,” Dick yells after him just before Jason closes the door, “it’s called losing a coin toss, asshole!”

Birds on Jaybird Street, by @cynassa (https://archiveofourown.org/works/39115587) Chapters: 4/4, 14.717 words T, No Archive Warnings Apply
Main Characters: Jason Todd, Dick Grayson, Tim Drake
Official summary: Jason is both annoyed and weirdly flattered when the replacement turns up to ask him for help. He mentally rearranges his calendar so he can be free Wednesday evening and says, “No, fuck off, I have very important business going on.” Tim eyes his 72” TV playing Japanese wrestling more judgmentally than it really deserves. “Important crime things,” Jason emphasizes. “Make Wingdick do it.” Jason doesn't think much of it when Tim needs his help, or Damian moves in, or even when Dick turns up looking beat all to hell. But at some point he realizes that he might be the best option his brothers have to recover from the cycle of violence that Batman has set up, and all he can think is that things were much easier when he was the villain.
Why I love it: In which Dick and Jason decide to adopt Tim and Damian (Jason's kind of an asshole, but a caring one). Kind of the same reason as the previous one: love that trope, love the tone, very funny.
Excerpt: Jason lies, "Sure, I'll take it up with Bruce " "Sure you will, " Tim scoffs. Jason changes his mind, and decides he will take it up with Bruce. "I don't have the time to keep being your nanny," he announces and then says, disapprovingly, "you skateboard, why don't you have knee and elbow pads?" "I'm Robin," Tim snaps, like he didn't put pants on the costume like a little wuss.

#8 Jin x Ty Lee
#22 Azula x Katara
Hello, anon!! Thanks for the ask!!
22 - two miserable people meeting at a wedding au
Katara stared into her empty wine glass. The drop of wine still left inside went side to side as Katara moved the glass. Somehow, even watching a drop of wine move was more entertaining than this wedding. There was no way Katara was going to say that out loud though. Not when it was her brother getting married. She was sitting at the family table, her parents dancing, and her brother and his new wife talking to the guests. It wasn't that Katara was angry about the wedding, not at all. She loved Suki and she knew she and Sokka were an amazing couple. It just sucked being the only single person at the family table now.
By this point, Katara had removed her heels and was just waiting for the clock to hit 9:30 so she could lie and say she had an important call in the morning so she had to go to bed early. It was 8:45 now, still a ways to go but not too far away. The 26 year old was content with just scrolling through her phone until she heard a voice behind her.
"That bored?" Katara didn't even need to turn around to know who it was.
Azula Agni.
Sokka must have invited her. He and her were pretty good friends in college and still stayed in contact even though she lived in the city. It wasn't that she and Azula didn't get along, it was just that they were always competing with each other. Whether it was in the classroom, a sports event, or even just seeing who could get somewhere faster, she and Azula were always competing.
When Katara turned around, her jaw almost dropped. Azula really cleaned up nice for her friend's wedding. She was wearing a floor length red dress, strapless, with her long black hair flowing down to her hips. Not to mention Sokka or Suki must have asked her to forgo straightening it because it possessed it's natural slight waves.
"Azula."
"Katara." Azula pulled out one of the chairs and took a seat, "I see you're just as bored as I am."
"What would give you that idea?" Katara asked.
"I saw you scrolling through Twitter." Azula explained.
"Fine. I'm bored. Happy?"
"Not particularly. Though it is nice to know someone is as miserable at this wedding as I am."
"You're miserable?" Katara asked.
"I am." She confirmed, "Despite our arguments, Sokka decided to invite my mother to this wedding as well." That seemed right. Whenever Sokka went to Zuko's house, he spoke to Ursa. They weren't friends in the same way he was friends with Zuko or Azula, but they were definitely close enough that Sokka might want to invite Ursa. Not to mention that Suki knew Ursa from her gym and they had met when Ursa stepped in to defend Suki against some creepy guy. Suki certainly had no problems with her coming.
"And it's been that bad?" Katara asked.
"That's a way to describe it." Azula grumbled, "Zuko told her I left the wedding so now she's searching the building and parking lot for me. I'd give myself half and hour or so before she eventually gives up. An hour if she tries to go back to the hotel room and see if I went there."
"She won't just try to call you?" Katara asked.
"Already thought of that. I gave her my phone before I 'disappeared' so she can't track or call me." Azula grinned, snagging a piece of fruit off Katara's plate.
"Impressive."
"I do what I can." Azula smirked, "So, why are you so miserable?"
"Just not that fun being single at your brother's wedding." Katara explained.
Azula nodded, "I can see that. So you're planning to sneak out?"
"Pretty much." Katara took a look at the clock again. 9 pm, "I'm sneaking out in half an hour. Do you want to come with me? Your mom would never look for you in my hotel room."
"That's true." Azula seemed to be considering Katara's words before landing on her choice, "Sure. So, I'm curious, why didn't you bring that one girl you're dating?"
"What girl?" Katara asked.
"That girl with the pirate earrings and horrible hair."
Katara's eyes widened with realization, "You mean Jiang? The earrings are a family heirloom and chose to shave her hair." Azula only rolled her eyes.
"I don't know what it is with you and dating bald people. Maybe try dating someone with hair next time."
"Ha-Ha. If you must know we broke up a month ago. She wanted to travel the world and I wanted to stay here to keep working." Katara explained, "We decided breaking up was better than long distance."
"You're not wrong." Azula admitted.
"You've tried long distance? No, let me say that another way. You've dated someone?"
"I'll have you know I've dated a lot of people." Azula said, trying to defend herself even though she knew she was stuck in a lie.
"Who?" Katara asked.
"Chan, Ty Lee, Zirin-"
"You kissed Chan once then made him run away because you sucked at flirting." Katara objected.
"How did you...."
"Zuko talks."
"I'm going to kill him."
"All I'm hearing is that we're level in terms how how many people we dated. Two and two." Katara pointed to herself then to Azula.
"Fair, but I did still try long distance with Zirin and that did not end well." Azula's tone has shifted by the end of her sentence so Katara gave her a confused face, "She cheated on me."
"Oh! I'm sorry." Katara whispered. She could practically hear Sokka in her head telling her that this is why she had to learn to not get involved in everything.
"Not your fault. You didn't make her cheat. Bottom line, long distance sucks." Azula said.
"Did you come alone tonight?" Katara asked.
Azula nodded, "Zirin and I broke up a few months ago and I wasn't ready to date for a while and, by the time I was, it was too late to invite anyone to a wedding." She explained.
“At least we got each other. Better than being alone.”
“By a small percent but I guess.” That earned Azula a small wack from the woman, “Okay. Talking to you is better than being alone.”
“Thank you.”
Silence filled the air between them for a few minutes, neither knowing exactly what to say or do in the moment, until a slow dance song came on.
“Katara!” Kanna called, “Come to the dance floor.”
“Oh, no, Gran Gran, I really don’t think-“
“Come on. You need to have some fun. Get up and dance a little.” Kanna gave Katara one of those looks that just screamed that if she didn’t get up she was getting dragged to the dance floor by her ear.
“Okay, okay.” Kanna seemed pleased enough by the response and left, “Let’s go.”
“What is this let’s go? I have no grandparents forcing me to the dance floor.” Azula said.
“No. You have me. Come with me or I call Ursa and tell her where you are.” Azula’s face turned to a scowl, as if her expression alone would make Katara change her mind, when it didn’t she let out a sigh, “Fine.”
The two woman ended up somewhere off the right side of the dance floor. Thankfully, both had experience dancing before thanks to different events so the dancing wasn’t all that difficult. What was difficult was hearing romantic music playing while having to stare into each other’s eyes.
“Your eyes are really golden.” Katara whispered.
“Thanks.” Azula felt a blush cover her face, "Your eyes are very blue. Careful, someone might get lost in them the same way they could get lost at sea and drown in an endless ocean never to be seen again... because your eyes are so blue."
Katara just stared at her, looking shocked. Who said that? What did you say in response to that? It left Katara confused, but, if she was being honest, also flattered and feeling warm inside. Despite it's odd delivery, Azula had just called her eyes beautiful. Wait. Azula did that mean Azula called her beautiful?
"Wait...Was that you trying to flirt?" Katara braced herself for Azula to laugh. To push her away and say no, asking where she had gotten that idea from. To roll her eyes and say she was just being nice.
She didn't expect Azula to blush even harder, "And if I was?" She asked, "Didn't know that was illegal."
"It's not. I just never suspected you'd want to flirt with me."
"And, now that I have, what will you do?" Azula asked, an eyebrow raised almost like she was already judging Katara's choice before she had even made one.
"I'll have to flirt back." Katara smirked.
"Now that I'd like to see." Azula rested her forehead against Katara's, "But can we do this in your hotel room because my mom just walked in."
Sokka and Suki, who had taken a moment to sit down and rest, had been talking with one another when Katara and Azula ran past them out of the room, holding hands. Suki groaned, handing Sokka twenty dollars.
"Never bet against me."
"They weren't supposed to get together until after the ceremony."
"I told you. I know my sister. She can never stay quiet about her feelings and Azula can't stop herself from being the world's worst awkward person when she sees a cute girl."
"And sending your grandmother over to make Katara dance?" Suki asked, "That somehow wasn't cheating?"
Sokka's eyes widened. He did not know Suki saw him do that, "Split the money."
Suki gently pushed Sokka's face towards her, "Deal." She whispered before kissing her new husband.

Tobey’s one sided beef with Violet will never not be funny 😭 but do you think it follows into adulthood where Violet just unexpectedly one ups him in the dumbest ways like in the chess match and that invention contest 💀
I mean, it has to. Cause that's just too funny.
For me it's even extra funny because Violet doesn't (in my version of when they're older) even live in Fair City anymore but when she does visit she of course kinda overshadows him in ways that's funny. Especially in his cul-de-sac soccer mom era of wanting to be praised. Like, oh Tobey took time to make a hefty summer roast. Never mind, Violet brought stuffed eggplant, and people think it's so organic. Oh, Tobey wants to show off a genuine helpful invention to the others? Violet brings out a tiny souvenir from an airport gift shop. Boom, she gets the attention. She's not directly his like enemy when it comes to the limelight (that honor goes to another soccer mom he absolutely has some terrible mutual beef with). But she does step on his toes. So he's salty, but in his older mellow state, he can't be too mad when she's very oblivious about it and they are friends.
However, I can't say that emotionally. She also, without knowing, kinda makes him insecure. It's like a running joke in Future AU that Tobey thought that Violet was the one Becky should have been with. Or that one day she could steal Becky from him, and all he could do is shrug and go "yeah I was waiting for this." Tobey is not even upset about the idea...well, NO, he would be sad about it, but he's gotta support the sapphics no matter what. Even though Violet has told him multiple times that she's on the aroace spectrum and that Becky keeps reminding him that she's not going to just leave a 20+ year-old marriage with kids. Even if Violet somehow confessed to her now. (Tobey doubts on Becky's part. He can't compete). (Chat he may be kinda stupid)/aff

Timeless - II (Bob Floyd x Reader)
Tumblr media
A/N: Hi besties! Lil early birthday treat from me (I'm hoping to write part three on my birthday but we'll see) with part 3!
pairing: Lt. Robert Floyd x reader
warnings/content: no warnings, extra cute Bob. mutual pining, OC's mom meddling but it's cute, Bob swears like once.
word count: 1.8k
one - two -
The Taylor home was practically humming with noise as your family prepared for Thanksgiving festivities together. Your mother was in the kitchen, channeling her inner Food Network tv personality as she made the holiday meal. Your younger brother was home from college, and your teenage sister had brought a friend over for the day to meet everyone and watch the hours-long football marathon that began early in the afternoon that day, following the thanksgiving day parade. Just as the Commanders were taking on the Cowboys, your doorbell rang. Despite there being several other people in the room with you, you appeared to be the only one able to hear it ringing. You sighed and rolled your eyes as you stood up to answer the door. In your doorway stood Bob, in a football jersey and jeans, a casual look that you remembered well from high school. He laughed softly as you answered the door, a warm, friendly smile on his face.
“Hey Krissy, Ma sent me over to see if your folks wanted any pies, she made these apple pie tarts and she made enough to feed the entire naval base, but I don’t think they’d fly back with me very well.” He let out a soft chuckle and shook his head, “Although, I’d love to show Hangman what a real apple pie tastes like. He swears the ones in the store are the same thing. You’d think being from the south, he’d know better.” He laughs again, his cheeks blushing as he speaks about his current life.
“Hangman? Your friend’s name is…Hangman?”
“No, it’s a callsign, all of us have one. His real name is Jake. Then you have Bradley who goes by Rooster, Natasha is Phoenix-”
“Ok then, what’s yours?” You raise an eyebrow with your arms folded across your chest.
“Bob. I got kinda confused when they asked me when I first started…so I told them my nickname and it stuck. Although now if you ask Hangman, he tells you it stands for “Baby on Board” because I’m the youngest out of the team.” He shakes his head laughing softly before looking up at you, his deep cobalt blue eyes meeting yours. God, you could get lost in those eyes for hours.
“I’m sure my mom would appreciate them, she’s sort of up to her eyeballs in cooking right now. I think she’s aiming to compete with yours for who can make the most food,” you laugh as you step aside to let Bob in, “Come on in, we’re just watching football, Ma’s banned us all from entering her kitchen.”
Bob laughed and walked inside your family home, the home he was so familiar with as a child, where you’d play hide and seek in the different rooms, sipping lemonade on your mother’s porch swing on the veranda out front, sneaking treats upstairs to your room when you were little, hiding while you devoured them way too close to dinner time. Helping you sneak in through your bedroom window late at night after a party you weren’t supposed to be at, driving you home in his dad’s beat up old pickup truck that had a habit of always getting stuck in the mud.
Your house hadn’t changed hardly at all since your family moved in all those years ago. A coat of paint here and new furniture there and that was about it - it was almost identical to how it was when Bob was inside it last. The time he’d taken you to prom because your date canceled on you the day before. Bob had seen you crying at school and was comforting you the entire drive home that day, and he had offered to take you, because he hadn’t found a girl he’d like to ask yet. Part of you felt like Bob just felt bad for his best friend and didn’t want to see you upset, but the other part of you had hoped it was because he wanted to ask you.
“Bobby Floyd, how’re you doing? ‘Suppose we should be calling you Lieutenant now, shouldn’t we?” Your dad’s booming voice echoed through the house as he greeted Bob. Bob smiled warmly and nodded his head once as he spoke.
“I’m great, Mr. Taylor, and just Bobby is fine, I don’t really use the rank outside of work. We both know my Mama wasn’t going to be calling me Lieutenant when I got home,” Bob let out a hearty laugh as he turned to greet your younger siblings, “Wow, Megan, haven’t seen you since you were about 5 or 6, you must be like, 16 now? And Nate, Ma said you just graduated college? What did you end up going for?”
As Bob played catch-up with your dad and siblings, you quietly excused yourself to the kitchen where your mother was. You noticed your mother’s sly smirk on her face as she kneaded the pie crust she was working on.
“I hear Robert’s come to see you?” she hummed as she set the crust in the baking dish, trimming the edges as she spoke, “That was awfully sweet of him.”
“Mama, don’t start,” you warned quietly, shaking your head, “I told you, I don’t think Bobby feels that way.”
Your mother sighed and wiped the flour off her hands onto her apron, shaking her head. She gave you a pointed look. “Kristen Taylor, you know that Robert’s had eyes for you since he was six years old - don’t think that he’s changed his mind.”
“What makes you so sure? What are you, an expert in how he feels now?”
“I may not be, but I’m very good friends with someone who is. And she tells me that Robert specifically asked how you were doing and if his mama had seen you recently. You don’t ask about a girl after 10 years unless you want to see them, Kristen.” Your mother laughed softly as she put the pie in the oven. After a moment of silence while you tried to wrap your head around this new information, your mother shook her head.
“Kristen, his mama and I just want you kids to be happy. But let’s face it, he didn’t come here just to see if we wanted some extra apple pies. And his mama did not “accidentally” make too many.”
“How did you know why he was here?” You laughed and raised an eyebrow as you folded your arms across your chest, watching your mother intently as you awaited a response.
“I can’t reveal all my secrets to you now, can I, Kristen?” Your mother smiled warmly as she looked towards the doorway. You followed her gaze, turning around to face Bobby, his cheeks turning pink as he stood in the entrance to the kitchen, leaning his hip against the door frame. He pushed his glasses up on his nose, a nervous habit of his for as long as you’d known him, and smiled.
“Hi Mrs. Taylor, you look lovely, Mama wanted me to come by and see if you wanted some apple pies…but I’m guessing she called you ahead of time to tell you?” He laughed awkwardly, obviously having heard the last half of your conversation.
“She did, Robert! And congratulations, it sounds like you’ve become quite the accomplished Naval lieutenant while you’ve been gone. Your mama’s been filling me in on what you’ve been up to. She’s very proud of you, but I’m sure you know that already.” Your mother nodded her head as she smiled.
“I do, m’am, she’s very glad I’ve come home for a few days. I don’t get leave too often now with everything going on back on base, but I try to come home when I can. Last few years we just went to Texas and met halfway at my brother’s house in Austin. This year though my brother and sister have brought all the little ‘uns up here, so poor Ma’s got all 3 of us kids up here, plus my brother’s two and my sister’s two, and their partners. It’s a bit of a full house. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t glad to escape when she asked me to come by.” He laughed softly, “I love my nieces and nephews but boy, do they know how to tire you out.”
“I can imagine! Actually, while you’re here, could I steal you to help Kristen for a moment? I need the serving trays brought down from the attic, but I can’t trust Nate to carry them without dropping one, and Megan’s terrified of going up there,” your mother laughed as she discreetly shot you a smirking glance.
“Oh, I’d be happy to, Mrs. Taylor. Krissy and I’ll get them down for you.” Bob smiled as he took your hand playfully and went off upstairs with you. It felt just like old times, his hand leading you up the stairs to the attic where the two of you used to hide and play in as kids. You’d turned it into a clubhouse of sorts for the two of you growing up, a sanctuary away from the chaos of having a big family and school work and chores - a place for just the two of you.
Bob sighed happily as he looked around the attic. The two of you had so many memories of being in here together, and for you, it felt like they all came flooding back at once.
“God, I haven’t been in here in years,” he said as a soft chuckle escaped his lips, “Remember that time you hid up here when we ate all of your mama’s apple pie she’d baked for the school bake sale? She was madder than a wet hen, and we thought hiding up here would be the smartest choice. Then, sure as shit, she found us laughing and covered in apple pie filling.” He laughed again, shaking his head. “We both got grounded for that one, I think that was the first time my mama ever had to ground me, and it was because of you in the first place!”
“Hey, I didn’t make you eat it,” you laughed as you held your hands up innocently. “I just encouraged you to join me. Not my fault that you did.”
Bob shook his head and smiled thoughtfully at you, his eyes meeting yours once again. You hadn’t noticed how closely you two were standing to one another until now, your bodies only a few inches from each other, close enough to feel each other’s body heat radiating. You instinctively bit your lip - your own nervous habit, and Bob gently stroked your cheek with his hand. He pulled you in closer and smiled softly.
“God, I’ve missed you, Kristen.” He said as he gently wrapped an arm around your waist, his other hand still gently stroking your face, “I really, really missed you.”

The Harper Girls
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Penny asked Rosie to spend the day with her in Oasis Springs. She left Costello with Robin and the twins while she had a day with just her daughter. It had been so long since they had a proper Harper Girls day. Penny wanted just one.
"I'm so old," she said, hugging her daughter.
"Not so old."
"We're doing some reminiscing today, kiddo, you okay with that?"
"Of course, Mom."
Tumblr media
"You know, just last week, in this very park, I threatened my little sister," Rosie said. "I just wanted her to be warned that if her shitty treatment of me touched my daughters, I was going to fix it immediately."
"You're a good mom, Rosie," Penny said. "I wish I could have kept you from the damage Lily did."
"You did a great job, Mom. You've given me everything I need to be successful. She didn't mar my childhood. You gave me a great one, just the two of us. Then there was Blair. I loved Blair."
Penny gave a wistful smile, eyes wet. "I do, too."
Tumblr media
"Did you know this is the bench where I told Ricky I was pregnant?"
"No!"
"Yeah. We snuck out of our houses and came to the park. The Harpers were of course going nuclear in the house because I'd just told them about you. Ricky was so sweet. He said it was entirely my choice. Whatever I wanted to do, he was on board."
"Why did you keep me, Mom? Not that I'm not grateful, but it must have been hard."
"I knew I wanted you. Immediately. It was way sooner than I'd planned, but you were there and I wasn't going to let you go. I knew I loved you more than anyone else and I'd do anything to give you the life I wish I'd been given. One of freedom and choice."
Tumblr media
"You were such a cute baby, too," She continued, looking out over the scenery. "Huge eyes. You liked to giggle a lot. I felt terrible that we were living in a shack your first few years, I wanted you to have a nursery."
"I had a giant yard to play in, instead," Rosie said. "You got me a room by the time I started school, though."
"That I did. I worked my ass off for that house. I still grow those same flowers that paid for it. A lot of them are in the gardens, too. Blair had always liked them."
"And now you own the town."
Penny laughed. "Well, half of it. The other half is yours, kiddo. B left it to you as her heir. And then you'll get my half when I go. You're the next town owner, kiddo. How does that feel?"
"Terrifying. How am I supposed to run a town when my girls run circles around me?"
"You'll figure it out, kiddo. You always have. You are the most competent, hard working, beautiful daughter anyone could have asked for. You, my sweet girl, my little lime, are perfection. You are my favorite creation."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Stop, you're gonna make me cry, Mom."

Making a Plan
Hello darlings! Today's story was brought to you by Rene! Darling, thank you so much for all your support!
Prompt: Capability Seen with Mr. Gold
+++
Natalie did not know, and did not want to know, how her shady apparently-godfather-probably-mobster -apparently-superpowered boss appeared at the foot of Annabelle’s driveway. Rather than risk her defenses, he very sensibly texted Natalie, who sent Ben down to collect him.
The decidedly saucy kiss Annabelle gave Mr. Gold when he greeted her was somehow weirder than almost everything else that had happened so far.
“It’s been a long time, ma chere,” Mr. Gold said and kissed both her hands next while Annabelle laughed at him. She kissed his cheek and guided him over to the table. “How you stay so beautiful, I will never know.”
“You’ve always been a flirt, and you’re sure not French,” Annabelle told him and delivered a slice of pie, strawberry, Natalie noticed, without asking. “What have you found out that we couldn’t discuss over the phone?”
“That the heroes and the villains are working together,” Mr. Gold said grimly, and set his suitcase on the table before he gave Natalie a quick, but also-unexpected hug. “Natalie’s power has been noted, and there are a great many interested parties who would like to claim it, and her.”
“Villains aren’t a problem,” Ben said with a shrug that was far more reassuring than it should be. He was really pretty scary when he wanted to be, but in a way that Natalie very much appreciated considering he was pointed at the people who wanted to hurt her or worse. “But the heroes, they’re a problem. Villains won’t work as a team the way heroes will.”
“Blackmail has a few of the easier ones off our path, and so do several of my contracts,” Mr. Gold said and passed a stack of papers to Natalie, and Fidget beside her. A quick shuffle through them proved them to be the same contracts he gave to everyone he worked with, but with superhero names, and their real identities, filled in where most people had regular names. The contents of each contract differed, but most of them seemed to be a strange sort of non-compete contract. “And a few I’ve chased into unwise contracts to keep them from bothering me. They cannot break those contracts they so-unwisely signed.”
“You’re a scary, scary old man,” Natalie said with significant admiration, and paused. “They can’t get me, but what about my family? Mom and my stepdad, and my sister and her family? They’re not protected, are they?”
“As it happens, they won a very exciting family trip, all expenses paid, to a private island,” Mr. Gold said with a very sly grin that lifted Natalie’s heart and her worries. “Very secluded. Very private. Extremely secure.”
“They bought that?”
“I had a word with your mother. We’ve stayed in contact. When I tell her she needs to take her family and go to ground, she listens.”
Right. Natalie forgot that Mr. Gold was her father’s best friend, back in the day. She still wasn’t sure how she felt about that either. It was weird to think that her father, many years dead, was some sort of bigshot hero.
Actually, that raised a question.
“How did people not know about me before all this?” Natalie asked Mr. Gold, and handed his papers back to him. “Pop was a whole big thing, right? Generally the little Powers don’t go down as heroes. If Pop had a Power, isn’t it something like an eighty percent chance his kids to too? Does Emilie have a Power?”
“Not that Jan could find,” Mr. Gold said, naming one of his security dudes whose Power was to sense other people’s Powers. “He told me about yours when it woke back in your teens. Unfortunately for you, your Power works on you as well as everyone around you, and you have been growing stronger. Recently, your presence has been noted despite my precautions.”
“I feel like I should have known about this a while ago,” Natalie muttered, somewhat resentful of the whole thing. “Don’t suppose there’s anyone around who can turn off Powers?”
The kitchen went silent, which was, in her experience, never a good thing.
“Nulls are rare,” Ben said at last, very reluctantly. He rested a hand on her shoulder and she leaned back into him. “And they’re dangerous. No one in the community, on either side, likes to work with them. They make everyone nervous. I don’t know one I’d trust not to sell us out.”
“I do, but she lives in Indonesia,” Mr. Gold said slowly. He sat back in his chair and took a pensive bite of his pie. Natalie smiled up at Annabelle, who presented her with another heavily-doctored chocolate milk, and a very reassuring kiss on the top of the head. She was working on a nice buzz, which wasn’t great for her decision-making, but did a great job of keeping her from freaking out. “Natalie, I think we may be joining your family on vacation.”
“…I don’t know if that’s better or worse than getting nabbed by villains or heroes or whatever” Natalie told him after a bracing chug of her very boozy chocolate milk. “Mom and Emilie are going to freak out, but that’s something I can handle I guess. You’re gonna get your friend to meet us wherever?”
“I’m going to try,” Mr. Gold said and sighed. “Annabelle, will you continue to provide your services until Natalie’s Power is neutralized?”
“If it comes with a vacation on a private island, no problem,” Annabelle joked, as if she hadn’t already reassured Natalie that she was in this until the situation was handled. Natalie had not realized how badly she needed someone mom-shaped to hug her and tell her everything was going to be okay. “If your friend doesn’t come through. There’s someone I can call, but he’s hard to find, and he hates the whole community.”
“That might be what we need, since I’m the teddy bear everyone is fighting over,” Natalie sighed, and closed her eyes to try and get a handle on her emotions. It didn’t work very well. “But why the hell not? I guess there are worse places to hide out than a tropical island, and I look great in a bikini. Let’s go for it.”

they dooo notice everything, I love it sometimes because they can surprise you with lowkey deep insights
okay my childhood friend who was a Bharani guy wrote this about me for primary school graduation lmao
'you have a face like the mona lisa and you make beautiful art' loll it was cheesy but so sweet for a 12 year old like awww- too bad that guy got too into drugs and recklessness. Plus he had major daddy issues-
wait that reminds me, I'd been meaning to mention.. I know we shouldn't take Freud too literally/seriously, but every Venus men I've met seems to have what looks like the 'opedius complex', like unconsciously they are always competing with their fathers and feel emasculated by him somehow, which is part of what drives their strong pursuit but also self-machoism when it comes to women
OMG UR A GENIUSSSS
I've noticed the daddy issues with literally every single Venusian man I know 🤣🤣🤣 and yk what's even more funny??? They all adore/borderline worship their moms 😭😭
In many instances their dads were kind of losers that their moms had to settle for and thus from early childhood they wanted to "be the man" of the household to make life easier for her and this developed into a need to do the same in relationships because they saw their own dad's as being very beta and not provider-y and try to overcompensate with their heightened masculinity. They're softies on the inside but they put on suchhhh a tough guy exterior because they despise such weakness and very much wants to be perceived as "a real man" 👀
The number of times a Venus man has told me something along the lines of "a real man would never let the..." or "real men don't depend on their women to run the house" or whatever is insane 💀💀💀 they saw their moms struggle and it left a deep impression on their psyche, so they spend their whole lives trying to make things easier for her and for "their" women. These men seem disgusted as hell by their fathers 🤡 it's 🤧🤧🤧
But yk as you said, trying to be the "man" who takes care of your mom and competing with your dad from childhood kinda puts you in a strange headspace when it comes to women 😣😣😣 because in this dynamic, he can never be her man. No matter how big of a loser the dad is, he's still the dad 😖😖
This means they endure a lot of humiliation and perceived betrayal throughout childhood bc their moms can't leave their incompetent husbands etc or no matter what the Venus boy does, he can't be the father 😔 as adults in love, they're already preconditioned to give love one way endlessly and get nothing in return.
The humiliation and rejection does not bother them because they've already spent their whole childhood enduring it at home 😔😔so they'll just obsess over you and project on to you even if you're not dating them or interested in them. They can be doormats this way 😔😔 it reminds me of Jane (I think that was her name?) from Forrest Gump who never reciprocates Forrest's love for her but uses him time and again. Forrest, like a Venusian man, loves her blindly and goes back to her again and again.
Forrest Gump is played by Tom Hanks who has Venus in Mrigashira atmakaraka (also in retrograde) and Sun in Punarvasu (his character is supperrrr Punarvasu coded) (Jupiter men are also endlessly giving in nature)
Blindness is actually a theme with Bharani & Purvaphalguni naks 👀

way back home - sashnetra (club au)
it's time for a first date 😌
here's a pic of the dress sasha is wearing 🥰
-
"Damn, look at you, mama!"
Kerri exclaimed as soon as Sasha stepped out of the closet with the dress she intended to wear at the restaurant date with Anetra.
She had opted for an emerald green dress with a high slit to the side, the vibrant color complimented her tan skin and eyes. Not to mention, it hugged her curves just right.
"What do you think for the jewelry? Simple or something extra?"
"I think a simple gold chain as to not distract him from the girls," the younger woman winked before walking up to a small box, "You can take one of mine, we can throw in a few rings to balance it out?"
Sasha nodded, "That sounds good, hair up or down?"
"Up, definitely, you look so hot with a ponytail".
Kerri watched attentively from the bed as her drag mom put the final touches to the look of the night - something felt different about her.
"You really like him, don't you?"
Sasha met Kerri's eyes through the floor length mirror, "I just want to make a good impression," she simply replied.
"That doesn't answer my question," Kerri raised a brow, "I helped you get ready for so many other dates, and you've never been this worried about it going well".
Sasha sighed, "You're so noisy, you know that?"
"Got that from you, mama!" Kerri got up and back hugged her, resting her head on Sasha's shoulder, "I just want to see you happy".
The older woman closed her eyes with a soft smile, "I know, baby," she let Kerri snuggle with her for a few moments before adding, "I'll tell you all the details tomorrow".
"Let me know if the dick is good!" Kerri joked, earning a playful slap from Sasha.
"Is that a way to talk to your mother, now?!"
-
The drive to the restaurant had been uneventful, Anetra had offered to pick her up perfectly on time for their reservation.
Sasha had heard of the restaurant he had chosen, it was on the fancier side than what she was used to but still didn't feel too uptight.
They were seated by one of the windows overlooking the city skyline, a dream view if Sasha didn't already have her new favorite one right in front of her.
"I hope you like this place, it was a bit of a last minute change since my favorite's restaurant was already fully booked tonight when I called from work earlier," Anetra started off after they had ordered their meals, "A friend of mine works in the management here, and they owed me a favor".
Sasha could tell he was a bundle of nerves as he sipped on his water.
She rested her hand on top of his, her thumb gently caressing the back of his hand, "You don't need to worry, I'm loving the place so far, and I trust your taste".
Anetra blushed, "I'm glad you like it".
"You mentioned work just now," Sasha tried to change the conversation to make him feel more at ease, "You never told me what you do".
"Oh, yeah!" Anetra's face lit up at the mention, "I teach taekwondo to kids. They are a bit of my pride and joy," he explained, "I used to be a professional athlete, first for judo then taekwondo, and almost got into the Olympics, but that... didn't work out".
There was a hint of sadness behind his words that made Sasha frown.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to-"
Anetra waved it off, "It's alright. That didn't work out, but it brought me to turn my love for martial arts into a job by training new generations and sharing my passion," he was smiling again, "That in itself is much more gratifying than any medal I could have won if I was able to compete".
"That's such a mature mindset to have".
"You can, you know, pop up to the dojang if you want to see a lesson. A few parents and relatives like to come and watch, so one more person there should be fine".
"You sure you wouldn't mind me there?"
"Of course not! I'm sure the kids wouldn't mind either. Knowing them, they probably will want to show off their skills," he laughed softly, "Even four-year-olds can be very competitive".
"What about you? Would you show off your skills too?" Sasha asked, resting her chin on one of her hands as she teased him.
Anetra's eyes widened, the blushing was back on his cheeks with a vengeance, "S-Sure thing".
"I mean, it feels just fair, you've seen me perform quite a few times. It's your turn now to impress me," she finished before she took a sip of her red wine.
-
The rest of the dinner went down without a hitch, Sasha smirked to herself every time she caught Anetra's eyes wandering to the neckline of her dress.
She'd be lying if she said she didn't like the effect she had on him.
But the more they talked throughout the evening, the more she found herself at ease with him. It had been so long since someone had showed genuine interest in her as a person, rather than her as a performer.
It was a refreshing feeling that Sasha wasn't ready to let go just yet.
Anetra offered to drive her back, not wanting her to be alone that late at night, and she gladly accepted.
Once they had parked near her apartment complex, he leaned to hold her hand, intertwining their fingers together as they walked the short way back in silence.
Neither of them wanted to say goodbye when they reached the door of Sasha's apartment.
"This is me," she let out, turning around to face him, "I had fun tonight," she said as a matter of face, still holding his hand.
"I'd love to see you again one of these days".
Sasha chuckled, "You have my number, baby. All you have got to do is giving me a call".
He reached to tuck in one of the strands of hair that had escaped her ponytail behind her ear, his hand lingered just enough for her to see his eyes darting from her own eyes to her lips.
A question lingered in the air, she could see what he wanted to ask but was too scared to do so.
She took the matter in her own hands and leaned forward to close the gap between their lips, smiling as she did so.

I got a job.
Which is kind of nifty I guess. I feel like it removes some of my stress although I knew I wouldn't have an issue finding a job, its just that the unknown makes us feel like we are continuously poor and homeless when that isn't the case.
An old classmate of mine from nursing school had messaged me some odd days ago saying she was leaving her job because her commute was really long and she wanted to know if I wanted it. She said she loved her job otherwise. I was actually going to wait until we moved to start applying for jobs because a lot of places want you to start ASAP and I don't want to apply too early. But she had already recommended me to her manager and he contacted me with a referral link to fill out. Did a virtual interview and he told me he knew he was already going to offer me the job.
HR already sent me an acceptance package and stated they wanted to pay me a relocation fee. Just an FYI this is for an Interventional Radiology nurse position, which I suppose I do have a bit of experience in with my previous position. IR is considered a cush or "soft" nursing job, but this is with a lvl1 trauma center and I'm not that familiar with the type of high acuity cases that they do. The last time I worked in a lvl1 trauma center it was primarily preop/PhaseII and a smidgeon of pacu. I wasn't in the thick of super acute/sick patients. So I don't really know what to expect in IR. It SOUNDS like they just want somebody who is familiar with and knows how to push meds for conscious sedation. They have techs who scrub in with the doctor. That was primarily what I was nervous about was trying to learn how to scrub for so many different types of procedures (cause they said they do about 40 different types) and I was like "oh lord thats a lot to learn and prove myself on, in a short orientation". But they told me that I would just be doing the conscious sedation and thats it. Which takes a lot of stress off. I don't know how to scrub..so..
anyway, coincidentally at the same time I accepted the position, somebody posted on the nursing reddit saying something like "those of you who want to work in IR because its a soft nursing job, WE DONT WANT YOU" I mean, I work hard and I split myself into 1400 pieces to try and help everybody so I'm not coming in to just sit and play on my phone.
The downsides to this job is that there is on-call and then I'd be making less money than what I was getting paid 5 years ago and rent prices have skyrocketted. Which is really sad. It has pretty much doubled. So less pay and more expensive CoL. We are already expecting to have to pay around 2000-2200/mo on rent alone for nothing super special. Not including pet rent and then utilities.
Me and my spouse were jokingly talking about me joining the service for the benefits. While its been brought up to me before in the past, I didn't think I had it in me to join the military. Now I'm actually kind of taking it seriously. I already talked to a recruiter but they aren't making it easy to get in contact with them which makes me think they're going to tell me they werent interested. But hypothetically, if I joined the military nurse corps, I'd go in as an officer, get officer pay, get BAH, get a retirement, continue the lifestyle of which I've become accustomed and if they have my specialty available, I would just continue doing the job I've become accustomed to. It was actually kind of enlightening.
If I have to work my booty off being full time, on call, making less than my mom as a secretary and I have to continue being a nurse....I mean, I dunno..people say that the military can't compete with civilian hospitals, but I kind of beg to differ. To me, it seems like they're offering a lot more.
But if military says "no, we don't need your specialty", I do have a job waiting for me for when we move.

I was thinking about why do I feel so good in Lithuania and it helped me to realize something about myself.
Despite the big desire to be accepted by my peers, I've always been sort of... a conservative traditionalist. I am pretty non-ambitious, not a fan of abuse of power, I do not tolerate drastic changes that well, it takes quite a lot of time for me to adapt, I'm not a big fan of fashion - I just monitor it and make my own thing, my life views are rather old-fashioned too and my moral codex is way too strong to immediately achieve from society anything I want... but strong enough to protect someone's honor. XD I'm rather a quiet book-worm mouse... unless I'm laughing or arguing. In real life, I do not even argue that much... And it was pretty hard to accept who I am because my society in Ukraine values completely the opposite qualities.
In Ukraine, people always told me that I must have been ambitious, I must have been the fastest and the strongest to achieve something... Although these words are true, they only demotivated me more. I just wanted to give up on everything more. I just wanted to live in a society which would accept me as I am and give me some time to adapt, in a society in which I wouldn't have to fight for my social status every single day, this was so exhausting. I'm a slow tempo person, I can achieve anything if I am not pushed hard, if I am not psychologically abused.
Why do we have so many good creators from Ukraine? Because in Ukraine, the amount of criticism you receive every day is just insane. Even if you are really good at what you do. Ukraine as a country is like a huge mom - no matter how hard you try, you will never be good enough for her. To develop here, you must be both criticism-resistant and attention-addict. Being born in Ukraine gave me some critic-proof features but it didn't give me desire to share with the world more. It definitely gave me some good sense of humor and ability to destroy anyone in an argument - but it also made me a very closed person and secretly deeply unhappy about my life.
In Lithuania, people are very calm, very chill, very polite and they have very genuine reactions, they do not wear this fake happiness on their faces which is obligatory in Ukraine if you do not want to get in trouble. In Lithuania, they don't chase victory like a lathered horse, they just calmly walk towards their goal without any stops. They do not mock you if you show them your "weak" side. They are pretty straightforward and they like justice. I do not have to compete with everyone for everything here. I am not afraid to be soft here. I am not afraid to be slow here. I am not afraid to be myself here.
It also sort of played a bad joke with me because... of course, I am no longer able to achieve things I was able to achieve before. The war, the emotional and physical burn-out, the simple growing old - I am not as strong as people wanted me to be. I have my own limits - but only in Lithuania I feel like they are being respected. I've always been the one taking care of people, making them feel better - and in Lithuania, I've realized that I've wasted myself and I actually want someone to take care of me and making me feel better, too. In Ukraine, you always have to give all of yourself - and I no longer want this. I don't have an eternal energy generator inside of me. I want to give a bit of myself in exchange for the equal.

"Wait, so you really know a lot about martial arts? That is so cool!"
"Yeah, I competed in taekwondo until I was almost sixteen years old, I loved it so much."
Sasha was sitting at a small table across from Anetra, in the small community room of the church Anetra's family had attended before she was born. The church was a few miles outside of Las Vegas, sitting on a few acres of private church property. Sasha flew out to Las Vegas for a couple days to see the wedding venue and find local vendors for the ceremony. It was also a good excuse for Sasha to spend time with Anetra, but that's beside the point.
Sasha and Anetra have been trying wedding cake samples from a local baker that Sasha met at a wedding expo a year ago. She could have sworn that the owner of Poppy's Bakery told her that she plans to close the business soon, but the store was up and running that morning when Sasha picked up the samples. Anetra showed Sasha around the church and introduced her to the leader of the church as well, who would be officiating the wedding. Sasha usually wouldn't spend a whole afternoon of cake sampling and touring a church for a client, but since the wedding was in three short weeks, but they were all in a time crunch.
"So why did you stop competing? You must have been really talented in taekwondo." Sasha felt so invested in learning more about Anetra's life, especially since it was just the two of them that day.
"Well, my mom said that it wasn't really a lady-like activity for me and-" Anetra was cut off by her cell phone ringing, and looked at who the caller was. Sasha noticed that Anetra's eyes slightly fell once she read the contact's name, "Oh, it's my fiancee, excuse me while I take this," Anetra answered the call and got out of her chair to step into the hallway. Sasha nodded and slipped out her own phone, sending a quick text message to Malaysia to ask how the CCC was doing while she was out of town. She tried to not eavesdrop on Anetra's phone call, but since the church was so empty in the middle of the week, it was really hard not to, especially since it caught her attention. Sasha listened to Anetra's voice in the hallway, with pauses in between for her fiance to speak.
"-said that we only needed to do it that once...Yes, I do want to be a good wife for you, but-... Yes, I know that, but I'm with Sasha right now at the church...Our wedding planner, Sasha?... Okay, but what if your wife comes home early?"
Sasha heard a long pause from Anetra, almost thinking that the phone call ended until her voice was heard again, but this time lowered. "It's not going to hurt again this time, right?... Okay, I'll tell my mom I'm babysitting or something. I'll be over later, do you want me to come in through the backyard again? Okay, love you too, bye."
Sasha quickly busied herself with pretend-scrolling through Instagram when Anetra came back in the room. She watched Anetra from above her phone screen as she stood behind the chair she was once sitting in before the phone call. Sasha slipped her phone back into her purse as Anetra began to speak in a slightly nervous tone, "Um, I think I've tried enough of the cakes for today. My fiancee wanted me to go over to his house to help him with, uh, the church fundraiser. With his first wife, obviously." Anetra rambled on, avoiding eye contact and tapping her fingers on the back of the chair.
Sasha stood up from her seat and took a step towards Anetra. "Are you sure? You haven't even picked a favorite flavor." She tilted her head as she pointed out the obvious, but also trying not to scare the bride off so quick.
"Oh, um, I like the lemon cake with the raspberry filling. I think that one would be good for the wedding." Anetra helped closed the lid of the box with the remainder of the samples and quickly cleared off the table of the disposable plates and forks.
Sasha watched her buzz around the room before she stepped over to Anetra by the trash can. "Okay, if you say so. How about we walk together to the parking lot? I can give you a ride in my rental car if you want." Sasha offered and reached out to put a gentle hand on Anetra's forearm. She felt tense under Sasha's touch, as she glanced to where her hand lay.
"Actually, wait. There's somewhere I want to show you first." Anetra moved Sasha's hand from her arm and began to leave the room and into the empty hallway. "It's my favorite part of the church, but I need to make a quick detour first."
