i love math, like genuinely
it gets a lot of hate everywhere because it was everyone’s least favorite class
but it’s so fun to figure out, it’s so rewarding for me to solve equations
i no where near the best at math, but i love learning different ways to do and solve things
i love learning new techniques that build off of things i’ve learned
you can also see why things are the way they are, there are clear steps that get explained and there are valid reasons why
it’s just so fun, figuring out why things the way they are
it’s mentally challenging as well, it gives me challenges, trying to figure out the right way to do things
if i don’t understand something there are resources i can use to figure it out (be it stuff i’ve already done, a teacher, the internet)
this is the first year i’ve ever really loved math, but it’s been really fun to fall in love with
#i get bored in my classes extremely easily#i’m ahead of all of them most of the time#so i struggle to put in the effort#but my math class has started to challenge me recently and it has been wonderful#the other classes have sadly not been doing the same thing#but i’ve gotten better about letting my grades slip#besides in the science classes#they’ve been both slow and boring at the same time with very short turnaround for projects#which is the worst of all worlds#i haven’t enjoyed the class at all#but i need three more science credits to graduate#so three more science classes here i come#anyway math has been lovely recently#so i wanted to have an appreciation post for math

Many Updates, Where To Begin?
It's been ages, so happy new year to start. I felt like posting this on my blog to let you all know I've been well.
So I felt like I had to make this post because I've been taking a spiritual class on how to hone my abilities more and.. apparently I'm a Draconian Star Seed.
Recently I enrolled in a reiki class and the Guru aligned my chakras and helped me cut cords to all my current and past ties. It was... very much needed.
Because I met someone, who told me I am in fact, a Draconian Star Seed.
And with my recent on -going diagnosis I won't mention here ---
It suddenly makes sense.
My spiritual experiences
My past life astral projections.
My learning disabilities, reptiles aren't exactly good at math XP
The fact that I NEVER could get along with or understand humans. I always felt a deeper connection to the 2D realms, cartoons, beings of ink and paint.. but I had no idea my destiny was something MUCH deeper.
It all makes sense, the reason I can't do "normal" human things like getting a PhD by I'm 12, is because I'M NOT human. I'm SOMETHING BETTER.
I began to do research on star seeds.. And it makes sense. I found out I am a Draconian because
I have no empathy whatsoever, I'm more self serving and that's okay
I've been told many times that I am 'intense' and fight to get what I want, and I'm relentless when I'm angry
I've always had a connection to the "wishing star" aka the North Star
In real life, on my father's side. There are many military people. Draconians are said to be militaristic.
I have green eyes for crying out loud, I've been told my eyes change color from green to yellow.
I'm not good at healing (When we were learning how to heal, I simply could not do it, and my Guru just smiled and said "there's room for all kinds here"
I honestly don't know why I came to earth? I don't know what resources I could possibly need here-- OH WAIT! GEMSTONES! IT ALL MAKES SENSE NOW.
My connection with Dagda
Dagda is very much green themed but he opened a portal for me, that I was ready to activate my star seed powers, and I proved it to him.
I feel like he was the "gateway" to this stuff . Dagda always taught me to look beyond what I saw, and stand up for myself. And Challenge myself.
I enjoy physical activities, even if I'm chronically ill
Growing up, I always loved stars, wishing on stars... I wonder if that's why I loved Cinderella so much, because we wish on stars.
And.. my very first love , Steven Stone: I love collecting gems, he does too, I wonder if he's also a star seed. He's from Ruby Sapphire and Emerald. And.. who's the mythical there? Yep. Jirachi. a star.
It all makes sense now. I'm both hurt, angry and .. so happy I learned who I truly am.
I asked how come that I'm not really interested in dragons? I prefer unicorns, etc. But you seldom get to choose in these matters, and I refuse to question this.
I'm still 2Devoted, that's not changing anytime. But it delights me that other starseeds like myself have been through what I did. I can get through life now. I feel like a part of me has been put to rest.
That "yearning" of wanting to be somewhere else, it makes sense now. My God. It all makes sense now.
I have done a lot of research, and this is my last reincarnation, after I leave earth I won't ever have to come back again. This makes me so happy! Thank you Dagda, and thank you person who told me I am a star seed <3

Having heart eyes for Class 1-A’s quote on quote ‘nuisance’ was a bit of a challenge. Especially when your adoptive father was the homeroom teacher. Mr. Aizawa had adopted you when you were a little older than seven, and you’d been with him ever since.
Having shown to him that you wanted to be a hero just like him, he enrolled you into U.A. through recommendation, and you got in. That was how you met Bakugou.
He was loud, abrasive, strong, driven, and so much more. But to you, he was almost sweet. He wouldn’t call you his friend out loud, even when Kirishima teased him for it, but he did consider you at least an acquaintance.
That was until the night of the school festival, when he kissed you. It was simple and sweet. Under the star-filled sky, his lips on yours, tasting vaguely of cinnamon from the sweet roll he’d had earlier.
When he pulled away, he tucked his hands back into his pockets, removing them from cupping your face. You smiled at him, your eyes lit up by the fireworks being shot into the sky.
The week after, training was much different. Even just seeing Bakugou sent your heart running a mile a minute. It was pounding out of your chest, the ghostly feeling of his lips still lingering on your own.
During the week of training, Aizawa had picked up that you had gotten noticeably stronger. Which could only mean one thing. You were falling in love. It wasn’t a bad thing, but as a father, he was concerned.
Who had you been talking with? Did any of your classmates know? His dad instincts were really kicking in. He didn’t want to intrude and overstep his boundaries, but he was ultimately curious. Who had captured your heart?
At first thought, he might’ve picked Kaminari, the two of you were close, but through further inspection, Kaminari didn’t act any differently around you. There was no evidence of the two of you even being a couple. So he quickly stepped away from that theory.
“What’cha doin’ Sho?” Present Mic’s naturally loud voice scared Aizawa. He whipped his head around and sighed.
“I think (Y/n)’s found a boyfriend. She’s gotten stronger, and since her quirk is love influenced-”
“You wanna know who’s got the heart of your little girl?” Mic teased. Aizawa just turned back around, watching as his students trained, keeping an eye on you in particular.
Your control of light had gotten much better, being able to pinpoint locations and send your hardened rays out like missiles, you were definitely much stronger than before.
“You know, she could’ve just trained a little better, you sure it’s love?” Mic asked, curious if Aizawa was just overthinking, perhaps letting his own worries about seeing you grow up and fall in love get the best of him.
“I’m almost positive. I’m just trying to figure out who it is.” Aizawa knew it wasn’t the best idea to snoop around in your business, but he was just curious. And as your father, he wanted good things for you.
“I’ll keep an eye out for ya.”
And by the end of the week, almost the entire staff had been watching out for you. Reporting back to Aizawa about who you’d been hanging out with. And with every report, almost every staff member saw you and Bakugou together, at the same time each day.
You’d been in Bakugou’s dorm, studying with him, going over math for Ectoplasm. Of course, Bakugou was focused on his work, but you were a bit worried.
Bakugou had asked you out, and you’d said yes of course. That was two days ago.
“Hey, Bakugou?” You paused, getting his attention.
“Yeah?” He questioned, setting his pen down to look at you. His crimson eyes were filled with intrigue as he looked at you with a gentle expression.
“I’ve been needing to tell you something.” You begin to wonder if you should tell the truth or makeup something. You figured the sooner the better.
Leaning in to kiss him once more before letting him know the truth, you’re interrupted as soon as your lips land on his.
Knocking on the door startles the both of you. You give Bakugou a confused look as he jumps up to answer it.
Mr. Aizawa is standing in front of the door, his arms crossed over his chest.
“What do you need?” Bakugou asked, confused as to why his homeroom teacher was standing at his door.
Giving you a soft expression, Mr. Aizawa glanced at Bakugou. You swallowed a lump in your throat and stood up.
“Bakugou...” You spoke softly, walking over toward them.
“Yeah, babe?” Bakugou smirked, using the term ‘babe’ as if your dad wasn’t standing in the doorway.
“Bakugou meet my dad, dad meet Bakugou.” You blurted, introducing the two. Bakugou’s eyes slowly widened, his head turning back to look at Mr. Aizawa.
“Dad? Like he’s your-”
“Adoptive father, but father nonetheless.” You cut Bakugou off before he can make the situation worse.
“I was going to tell you but we just started dating and-”
“It’s okay. I’m not mad. Keep him in line.” Mr. Aizawa nodded toward Bakugou with a smile, patting your head before giving a few more words.
“And you.” Bakugou was ready to buck up to the elder, defending his love for you.
“If she’s truly happy with you, then I’m happy with you.” Bakugou’s heart warmed at the man’s words. Glancing at you, he really saw so much in you. Love and kindness, power, and strength, someone he wanted to spend so much time with.
He was really in love with you, and he couldn’t imagine falling for anyone else.
“Yeah yeah, whatever you say, old man.” Bakugou huffed, wrapping an arm around your waist. You giggled and shook your head.
“Get back to your dorm soon.” Aizawa spoke to you, knowing that curfew was coming soon.
“I will! Love you, dad!” You called to him, teasing him just a little as he walked down the hall.
“Love you too.” He mumbled quietly.
Closing the door, Bakugou pressed his lips onto yours, no longer wanting to wait. You kissed him back and smiled.
“Don’t tell me you’re going to make him regret letting you go without having to clean the entire dormitory.” You paused, your breath ghosting over his lips.
“Oh, I’m going too.” Bakugou smirked.
Bakugou was an amazing boyfriend. And when the time came for him to come to one of your little family dinners, where you and Mr. Aizawa sat and ate, talking about what happened, Bakugou was thoroughly satisfied.
You made sure that they both weren’t butting heads the entire time, but at the end of it, when you were waiting for Bakugou to be finished clearing the table, you overheard him talking to your dad.
“I really like her.” Bakugou mumbled. You peeked your head around the corner and watched your dad smile.
“She really likes you too.” Aizawa glanced back, spotting you. You let out a small laugh, watching as Bakugou’s cheeks flushed red.
“H-hey! Dumbass are you eavesdropping?!” Bakugou paid no mind to his soapy hands as he charged at you but not before getting caught by Aizawa’s scarf.
“No running inside.” Mr. Aizawa’s hair flared up, his eyes glowing red.
There was a feeling of warmth deep down into your heart, one that you would cherish forever.

"You've been staring at her all day," Raven groaned, stabbing a curly fry into her pot of ketchup and shoving it in her mouth. "Just go talk to her."
Dio shuffled around uncomfortably. "I can't." he frowned, narrowing his eyes in your direction. There you were, sat at the cafeteria table alone, your head deep in a book. You'd left your lunch to one side, hoping to get back to it once you finished this chapter.
"Aw, does Dio have a crush?" Raven cooed teasingly, fluttering her eyelashes.
"Shut up," Dio retorted quickly. "You have ketchup around your mouth."
Raven's smile quickly faded as she pulled out a compact mirror to check her appearance. Dio went back to watching you. You were beautiful, and he just didn't understand how the world around you seemed to ignore you. He could somewhat relate. Although he had his group of friends, he still felt like an outcast. But you were always alone, your head in the clouds or stuck in some book. As far as he saw, you didn't even have friends. You spent your days cooped up in the academic library, studying or doing your homework.
"Pointless staring," Ash rolled his eyes, but Dio just swallowed, trying to dismiss his comment. "You could never get a girl like her."
Dio finally turned to face Ash, and even flicked a glance towards Raven who was still wiping ketchup from the corner of her lip, about to reapply her black lipstick. "I could get any damn girl I want." Dio folded his arms across his chest.
Ash hummed, scrunching up his nose. "Sure kid, whatever. If that's what you chose to believe."
Dio scoffed incredulously and leaned over the table. "You tell him Raven! I could get any girl!"
Raven didn't look up from her mirror once. "Sounds like he's challenging you, Dio."
"Is that true?" Dio hissed. "You're challenging me?" his voice was sour.
Ash nodded his head and picked up a curly fry from Raven's plate. "We're all still up for getting wasted in the park tonight, right? Dio, if you can get ‘little miss perfect’ over there to join us, I'll take back what I said."
"That's ridiculous," Dio shook his head. "She's not gonna come with us. Sometimes I don't even know why I bother going with you guys," Dio looked back over to you— you really were little miss perfect; with the perfect smile and glistening eyes. When Dio looked at you, it was like nothing else mattered. The whole world turned into a blur, only, he could just about make out Ash's chuckle in the background. "Fine. I'll do it." Dio frowned. He knew if he didn't at least give it a shot (or better yet, succeed), he'd never hear the end of it from Ash and Raven.
Dio threw the crust of his sandwich back down on his plate and pushed his tray to one side before standing up. He brushed down his outfit, trying to make himself look somewhat presentable before speaking to you, and sauntered towards you. He could practically feel Ash and Raven's eyes burning into his back from the other side of the cafeteria.
"Hey," Dio greeted, clearing his throat and sliding down on the unoccupied seat across from you. You looked up from your book and your eyes met with his. "I'm Dio— I'm uh, I'm in your science class and math class. You might not know me but-"
"Trust me, I know you." you shot back before you could even let him finish. You turned a page in your book and pretended to seem uninterested. It was difficult though, because the mysterious boy with jet black hair and pierced ears was for some reason giving you the time of day. You— out of all people. You usually had good intuition and you felt in your heart that there was something not right about this interaction.
"What are you reading?" Dio asked curiously, peeking over to try and get a glance of the pages.
"1984." You mumbled back.
"Oh I love that book!" Dio exclaimed with a grin as he kicked his feet back on the table, knocking your dinner tray slightly. Now that comment made you look at him.
"You've read 1984?" you raised your eyebrows in disbelief.
"Well, read… watched the movie… same thing really," Dio shrugged and you couldn't help but giggle. He was adorable— and slightly dorky which was something you hadn't expected at all. "It's about how there's someone always watching you…"
"Yep," you nodded in affirmation and pointed towards the table where Dio was once sat at. "Kinda like how your friends have been staring us out since you came over." you waved at them awkwardly. Raven avoided eye contact, looking back down into her bowl of curly fries.
"Shit, I'm sorry about them," Dio sighed, running his fingers through his hair. "The truth is, Ash bet I couldn't pick you up."
"Why would he bet that?" You asked, sliding your bookmark into the novel and placing it down on the table. You suddenly felt vulnerable but at least Dio was being honest with you.
"Because, I can't stop thinking about you," Dio shrugged helplessly. "And I want to get to know you better. Would- would you be opposed to that?"
You thought for a moment, and then shook your head. Elated, Dio smiled and scrawled down his phone number on one of your napkins. No person had ever shown you any interest, and now one of the school's most intimidating guys wanted to ‘get to know you better’? You'd be foolish to lie to yourself anymore and pretend like this wasn't something you'd thought about before. You'd caught glimpses of him at the back of class, you'd try to repress a smile every time he quipped a sarcastic comment back at a teacher or distracted the class from their work.
He wasn't the type of guy you ever imagined ending up with, but you were still intrigued by his enigma. Dio might've only recognised you from science and math class recently, but you'd known him since preschool. Before he dyed his hair, got all those tattoos and piercings. He even used to live in your neighbourhood, before his dad died and he had to move. You'd heard stories about him since then, about how he'd ‘gone off the rails’. But he still seemed nice enough. Truthful, and he still had that sparkle in his chocolate coloured eyes that you remembered from when he shared the sandpit with you in elementary.
The napkin with his number on weighed you down until you got home. You placed it on your dressing table and sat down. It was staring at you— begging for you to call. You sighed, giving into the temptation and rang the number. After three rings, Dio answered.
"Hey, it's me." you said quietly, nervously biting your lower lip.
"Oh hey! I'm so glad to hear from you. I was beginning to get afraid that you wouldn't call." Dio admitted sheepishly, scratching the back of his neck. You overheard some chattering in the background.
"Are you busy?" you wondered out loud.
"I'm just with Ash and Raven. We're having a few beers in the park. You're more than welcome to join us."
You winced at the thought of joining them for beers in the park. You'd barely took a sip of champagne at your aunt's wedding, nevermind drinking bottles of beer with the most intimidating group of teenagers in the whole town.
"Oh I don't know Dio…" you mumbled.
"Hey, you don't have to do anything you don't want to. It'll just be nice to have your company— and I promise, we don't bite." you considered his words and sighed.
"Okay Dio, I'll be there in half an hour. Text me the address."
"Got it," Dio grinned. "See you soon."
Ash chuckled as Dio hung up the phone. "We don't bite?" Ash quoted Dio with a smirk. "Oh, she's really that innocent huh?"
"I want you both to behave," Dio warned. "Don't scare her away."
You looked at yourself in the mirror, wondering if you should change your outfit to something maybe a little more alternative. You wanted to fit in with Dio and his friends, after all. However, you remembered Dio has come to you, interested in you just the way you were. And you swore that you weren't going to change yourself for anyone. You combed through your hair and grabbed your favourite pink lip gloss— one that you wore only on special occasions.
Your mother came in just as you were applying it. "And where do you think you're going?" she snarled, raising an eyebrow as you puckered your lips.
"Out with some friends." you shrugged nonchalently.
"What friends?" she questioned you further, her voice was highly strung and she stood with a hand on her hip.
"You remember Shane Morrissey from preschool?" you asked nervously. "Well- he goes by Dio now, and-"
"No." your mother narrowed her eyes. "That boy is nothing but trouble. Ever since his dad died and he and his mother got evicted, I've heard that he's turned to a life of crime. A petty thief. And his mother? An alcoholic."
You scowled at your mother's condescending and judgemental attitude. "You don't know him." you retorted, crossing your arms over your chest.
"And I'm not sure you know him either." your mother snapped back.
"I'm going whether you like it or not," you huffed, standing up and grabbing your jacket. "You can't shelter me your whole life."
Before your mother could even reply, you bolted out the house and ran down the street. Luckily, it wasn't too cold, and the address to the park was only a ten minute walk from your home. You spotted Dio, Raven and Ash almost immediately. The trio were sitting on a small grassy patch.
You sat next to Dio and tried to engage in conversation, although you weren't really familiar with the things they were talking about. Dio helped you out though, taking his time to explain things so you understood and he encouraged you to talk about your own hobbies and interests. The second Raven tried to peer pressure you into drinking, you politely declined and Dio whisked you away from them. "Are you uncomfortable?" he asked you in private.
"No, I'm okay, I think," you nodded your head in affirmation. You really didn't want to go home— you were having such a good time with Dio.
"Because if it's too much…" Dio trailed off. "Maybe we can go back to my place?" he suggested. "I know Ash and Raven can be intense. So it would be just us."
Your gaze flicked back to Ash and Raven who were sharing a cigarette and you smiled. "Yeah, okay," you agreed. "I'd like that."
"Good," Dio replied softly. "Let's go then."

Hi sweet! Welcome to Tumblr ❤️ I was wondering if you could do a Bakugou x reader, where the read is quirk-less and hides it from him, then he finds out and angsty stuff happens, but it ends in fluff. Feel free to change bits ❤️
Yasssssssss sorry this took so long!!! I recently took a trip to Oregon and couldn’t write as efficiently as I wanted to, please enjoy!!!
The Bitchy Couple (Bakugou x Quirkless Reader)
Warnings: swearing (duh)
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
You remember the first time Bakugou laid eyes on you. It almost felt like it was yesterday. He tried to kill you then.
You roamed the middle school grounds, looking for someone to hang out with during lunch. The latest pop music blared in your eardrums as you lost yourself in your imagination, pretending you were in a music video or something. You were so lost in thought that you didn’t even see the three people that were headed your direction, equally distracted. The one in front was walking backwards, spouting loud nonsense to the two. He had no idea that you two were on a collision course straight for each other until BAM, your face collided into his shoulder blades.
“HEY, WHAT THE FUCK YOU NERD?” he turned around and yelled
Annoyed, you readjusted your headphones and scoffed. “You were the one walking backwards asshole, and you’ve got 2 goonies who coulda warned you, but I guess all you were too stupid!” You spat, walking off.
Back then, you were the only one who threw his shitty attitude right back at him. Bakugou didn’t wanna admit it, but he respected someone who could fight his fire with fire. Screw bullying the lower classmen, they weren’t as entertaining after a while. Besides, he found a new hobby, and it was to outdo you.
Almost every day, your conversations would end up something like this:
“Hey you wench, where’d you get those shitty headphones?”
“Up your mom’s ass, dickhead”
“Oh yeah? At least she has an ass. It looks like your back just extends to your legs”
Then, it escalated more into:
“Suck my dick, Bakubitch”
“How bout u suck mine? I’ve prolly got a bigger one anyways!”
“Nah, I know you’ve choked on waaaaaaaaaay more dick”
-And it got to the point that people were taking bets on who won the insult fest that day. In your school, you two were a famous duo, often being referred to as “the bitchy couple”, well, at least to the outsiders.
Away from the eyes of your classmates, Bakugou was a little more...sweet? You weren’t really sure what to call it, but it was a side of him that wasn’t always angry, someone who didn’t feel like he had to put on a show all the time. You worked hard to uncover that side of him, and damn were you proud. You did nearly everything to annoy him at first: telling everyone his most embarrassing secrets during lunch, purposely pairing with him during class projects- you even got your mom to contact his mom so they can arrange “study sessions” for you two. In return, he’d send the most embarrassing pictures of you to guys who asked you out, steal the shoes out of your locker so you’d walk to class with smelly feet, and blew up your jacket a couple of times during the winter. Eventually though, when the two of you walked home together alone and away from your audience, he’d lend you his jacket, promising to buy you a new one to replace the one he destroyed. During those class projects, you’d pour your all into obtaining a good grade when no one was looking. Underneath the mask that the two of you showed everyone, you guys were almost a couple.
Almost.
“Baka-gouuuuu” you hummed.
“What?”
You pouted your lips at him, earning yourself an aggravated blush from the gremlin.
“Disgusting” he said, “come to UA with me”
“Haha- wait what?” You stopped, completely baffled, “you want me to WHAT?”
Bakugou scoffed, not meeting your eyes. “You heard what I said.”
You scanned his face, looking for any sign of sarcasm or jokes...anything-but no, he was dead serious. That was completely out of character for him, even you were amazed at how sudden his behavior flipped. You looked down, thoughts spinning in your head as you processed the question. You were nervous, but why? He asked you to go with him, THE Bakugou asked you to apply at the same school when he basically bullied half the rest of the school out of even THINKING about it, so why aren’t you excited?
“Hero course” he said, and pointed to himself, “like me”
Then it clicked in your head, not once in the entire time the both of you had together did you ever show off your quirk like he did. Even when he’d challenge you, you’d always end up saying something like, “I don’t need a stupid quirk to make you cry like a little baby”. He’d think nothing of it and continue squabbling with you. No one, not even your own mother has ever outright told him you were quirkless. Maybe part of you was scared of what his reaction will be, judging from the way he treats Deku. Maybe some of it was shame from being a part of the minority in the world. You didn’t really know, and it was just something you never really wanted to find time for. Now, all that laziness was coming right back to bite you in the ass.
“Bakugou, I don’t really-“
“I’m gonna need someone to bully at UA...other than shitty Deku” he said, but his eyes told you what he really wanted. He wanted someone loyal, someone who would stick around through all his bullshit when no one else would. Even his goons were intimidated out of applying at UA. There wasn’t anyone left to compete against and keep Bakugou grounded except for, well, you.
You sighed, wondering how you were going to explain this to him.
“(Y/n)-“ he started again.
But you were faster, “I can’t apply to the hero course, Bakugou.”
He looked at you, confusion written all over his face. “What? Why?”
You looked down, averting his gaze. “Uhm, because... I can’t be a hero without a quirk, can I?” You say quietly.
It seemed like the world just stopped the moment those words left your mouth. The wind stopped shaking the leaves of the trees around you and Bakugou just...froze. You stayed silent, letting him take it all in.
His mouth moved as if he wanted to say something, but he turned away instead, muttering something under his breath that you couldn’t quite hear.
“Baku, I can’t hear you.”
He turned around, rage in his eyes. He spoke low and aggressive, sending shivers down your spine, “so you were just a quirkless nerd this whole time? Did you hear me that time you little bitch?” He took a step towards you, towering over your smaller frame. You stumbled backwards and almost lost your footing, fear rushing through your veins. You were well aware of what Bakugou could do, but you never thought that you’d be on the receiving end. Is this what Bakugou was like as a true bully?
Bakugou scoffed at your reaction and continued advancing in your direction, “How noble of you, following me around and wasting time with pathetic insults when I could’ve been training. Do you feel proud of yourself? DO YOU?”
You were shocked. He hasn't talked to you like that before. Not like this. Tears threatened to start forming at your eyes, flushing your face red. Bakugou blinked, realizing what he just said. Deep down, he felt awful from the very first sentence, but his ego wouldn’t let him apologize. He turned around and walked on home, leaving you silently crying where he left you.
He nearly broke the hinges of the door off when he got home, ignoring his mother’s yells and climbing up to his room. He cursed over and over again, fighting his conscience and his ego at the same time. Dammit, he was supposed to be fighting villains, not his own head! On one hand, he just couldn’t believe that you would tolerate him calling quirkless people pieces of shit, but on the other hand, he thought maybe it was his fault for making you feel unwelcome at the topic. Either way, he wasn’t sure what to be angry about, so he got angry at everything.
“aaauuAAAAAGH” he yelled in frustration, as he slams his body down onto his bed. What the hell was he supposed to do now? You probably-no, DEFINITELY didn’t want anything to do with him by now. Still, he just couldn’t help but feel bad. It was gnawing at his chest relentlessly, urging him to go back and make things right, and that was exactly what he was gonna do.
“KATSUKI!!! WHY IS IT SO DAMN COLD IN THE HOUSE?” Mama Bakugou yelled. She waited for an angry response, but heard nothing. She walked up the stairs, expecting her son to have passed out already, but was instead greeted with an empty room...and an open window. “Stupid kid,” she scowled, “coulda walked out the front door ya know, or at least close the damn window.”
***
Bakugou didn’t break a sweat running to your house, but he panted hard. His mind was jam packed with the things he wanted to say to you, he just had to find the courage to say it. Hah, Bakugou Katsuki... afraid of something? That was a first. He climbed the side of your fence up along a pipe, just like he’s done a million times before. He’d come and leave before your mom could smother him with her home cooking and conversations about arranging a marriage between you and him. It honestly became a little too overwhelming, and he’d just sneak in and out whenever he’d have to tutor you on something.
He pulled the window open and slipped in only to find a lamp being swung at his face. He dodged nimbly and stopped your second swing with one hand, ripping the lamp out of your hands before you could try again. You turned around and grabbed a book off your desk, yeeting it at his face before kicking his stomach. The lamp made a thump as it landed on the floor, Bakugou now occupied with the gigantic math book. You frantically looked for something else to throw, knowing he recovered quickly in combat. Your eyes landed on a half eaten pork bun on your bedside dresser and you quickly lunged at it, managing to hit Bakugou’s forehead before he could see it coming.
“God DAMMIT stop tryna hit me with shit!” He yelled, shoving you on to your bed.
You staggered a bit before falling and growled in anger, “you have some fuckin nerve coming back here after what you said!” You yelled back.
“Honey what’s going on?” Your mother called, opening the door. You two were so caught up in arguing that you didn’t realize how much noise it was making...or the footsteps coming upstairs. Your mom gasped as she saw what happened. You lying on the bed, hair messy, shirt a bit ruffled...Bakugou standing over you just OOZING dominance...oh yeah, she got the picture. The WRONG picture.
She blushed bright pink, “oh uh, hi Katsuki, be careful you guys ok?!?! Okbyedontforfettouseprotection!” She said before slamming the door closed in a hurry and climbing down the stairs.
“MOM WAIT NO IT'S NOT LIKE THATUUUUUUUUUGH” you yelled and plopped your face into your hands. You weren’t even angry anymore at Bakugou, just frustrated.
You sighed, lifting your face from your hands and stared into empty space. Bakugou took the empty spot next to you, looking at the ground. There was a long and awkward silence between the two of you. Painfully long. Bakugou eventually sighed, making a move to break the extremely thick ice.
“I didn’t really mean what I said, (y/n)-“ he started.
“Then why did you say it?” You snarled.
Bakugou looked up at you, then back at the ground, fiddling with the fabric of his pants. “I was just, I dunno, angry at myself ok? Fuck off, wait no don’t fuck off, I...” he shook his head and took a big huff of air. Admitting his own wrongs wasn’t his forte, but it was definitely entertaining. You resisted the urge to smile a bit. He didn’t deserve that yet, not until he apologized. “I was just angry cuz...cuz I thought only people with quirks could be strong. But then you showed up and I thought you were probably the third strongest person I’ve ever met-“
“Third?” You cocked an eyebrow.
“After All Might, then me” he said, furrowing his eyebrows, “anyways, back to the point, look, I’m just sorry, for everything and I guess I shouldn’t have said that. I got upset at the fact that...I can’t beat your ass in hero course now. I can’t do projects with you anymore. And plus, if you aren’t going to UA anymore then-“
Bakugou was interrupted once again when you sat up, walked over to your desk, and dug through your drawer. You pulled a few pieces out before finding the one you wanted, then proceeded to wave it in the gremlin’s face.
“Who said I wasn’t going to UA?” You said, watching as his face just stared at the paper in awe.
“You’re enrolling in support?!” He yelled, taking the paper out of your hand.
“Yep” you said, giving him a small smile.
Bakugou lowered the paper and hung his head, “(y/n), I wouldn’t blame you if you never wanted to see me again.”
You sat back down and scooted over to lean on his shoulder, something he’d only ever let you do in private. “It’s ok Bakagou, I know you were only scared of losing me to some quirkless job like accounting or-“
“SHUT THE FUCK UP IM NOT SCARED OF WIMPY SHIT LIKE THAT” he yelled, a small and almost unnoticeable blush appearing on his face.
You giggled, “sure whatever, look, I won’t be able to fight villains with you, but I can help you fight villains better by making support items for you. So I guess...that kinda makes me the hero behind the hero huh?” You smiled.
Bakugou scoffed, “Heh whatever, you better make me the best fuckin support items out of anyone there cuz I’m gonna need em to be number one, understand?!”
You scoffed back, “Number one my ass, maybe third place at the MOST.”
He growled as he whacked you with a pillow, making you shriek with delight. High school with this angry gremlin was gonna be interesting.

Have you ever started reading a book and wondered if you’d read it before? >> IDK where on earth Lane got this survey from but it is long as balls and I’m taking it as a personal challenge at this point lmao. LET’S GOOO I’ve never had this experience, no. I don’t always remember the content of books I’ve read, but I at least remember the experience of reading them, I guess?
What has been bothering you a lot lately? >> Oof. I don’t know how to explain it here so it makes sense to the average reader, so I won’t bother making sense. I want Bruni to be a real, external entity, so badly, but if he’s not then I need to know. I need to know if I just created him, because I needed to, so I can come to terms with that and figure out what to do about it. I’ve also been bothered lately by just... my inability to form connections, to feel the way I’m supposed to feel about other people. Knowing why I’m like this (and knowing that it’s not some inherent flaw of mine but a direct result of not being emotionally taken care of when I should have been) only helps a little. I feel like there’s no way I’ll ever be able to fix this, and my only truly fulfilling relationships will be Inworld, forever. (I guess that’s better than nothing, though! At least Inworld exists.)
What (or who) have you been missing lately? >> ---
Are you trustworthy? >> I mean, I guess. I don’t know what anyone would be trusting me with.
Did your parents teach that white lies were ok? >> No, even a white lie would have gotten me punished.
Have you ever hallucinated? >> Yes.
Do you sleep with your door open or closed? >> Closed, to keep both the cat and noise out.
What flags do you have in your room, if any? >> None. Sparrow has a pretty neat gay flag on her wall and a regular gay flag on her lamp.
What (or who) is the best thing that ever happened to you? >> Hm.
What is the worst decision you ever made? >> *shrug*
Do you miss college? >> I’ve never been.
Have you ever called a teacher “mom”? >> No.
What is your favorite arcade game? >> In the Groove.
Do you feel neglected? >> Not now. But I sure do feel the ramifications of previous forms of neglect.
What school subject(s) are/were your best? >> ---
Are you allergic to grass? >> Nope.
Do you remember to water plants? >> Sometimes. I managed to kill a spider plant, though, so I’m kind of discouraged when it comes to plants. I’ll let that be Sparrow’s thing, I’m apparently unfit.
What season is your birthday in? >> Spring.
Name 3 creative people you know. >> ---
Name 3 YouTubers you aspire to be like. >> ---
What color was your first car? >> ---
What year did you graduate? >> 2004.
When was the last time you saw the person you currently have feelings for? >> ---
Have you ever been scammed? >> Nah.
Are you allergic to pollen? >> No.
What style of wedding dress do you like best? >> Sparrow’s was pretty neat.
Are you over your first love? >> ---
Do you talk on the phone a lot? >> I never talk on the phone.
Would you rather call or text? >> Obviously text.
Do you always answer your phone? >> What do you think?
When was the last time you went to a party? >> I guess January; the get-together after Elle’s wedding was pretty much a party.
What was the last thing you ate? >> Beans and rice.
What’s the last book you checked out from the library? >> I haven’t checked a book out in a while. I heard about a book recently and it wasn’t on Scribd so I decided to check Libby just on a whim (I’m used to the books I want to read never being available as ebooks in this library’s meager collection) and they had it. So I might check it out. I feel kind of anxious about doing it because my reading habits have been so erratic lately and I’m like “but what if I don’t read it fast enough?” which, like, you know, I just... renew it... but no one said anxiety had to be fuckin logical, you know.
Do you have a twitter? If so, what was the last thing you tweeted? >> No.
Who was the last person you talked to on the phone? >> ---
What’s the last thing you cooked on the stove? >> Eggs.

Do you ever use coloring books? >> I’ve done so, but I haven’t lately.
Are you planning on watching the Olympics? >> No.
Do you pronounce the word “often” with or without a “t” in the middle? Hmm. Now that I’ve said it to myself in a few different contexts, it seems I do both. If it’s a one-word answer, like in response to “how much do you get high?” then “often” has a t in it. If it comes in the middle of a sentence and is not the focus, it does not have one. < Yup.
Have you ever been on a trapeze? >> No.
Do you enjoy popping bubble wrap? >> Sometimes. I saved some from a recent package just in case I get the urge, lol. It’s on my desk right now.
Are there any waterfalls near where you live? >> I don’t think so. The landscape isn’t exactly varied here.

Do you own a Polaroid camera? >> No.
Do you enjoy baking? >> No.
What’s your favorite type of flower? >> Sunflowers.
Last time (if ever) you were on an airplane, where were you going? >> I was coming home from Houston.
Do you know anyone who is left-handed? >> Sure.
What is something you think is underrated? >> ---
Around what temperature do you consider it to be too hot outside? >> It’s not so much the temperature as the level of humidity, how sunny it is, what time of year it is, etc. There are multiple factors that go into how I experience temperature and the number on the thermometer is only one facet of that.
In what ways do you expect your life to be different one year from now? >> ---
How often do you travel outside of the state/province you live in? >> Not often. Before it was just because it’s expensive and also Sparrow would have to take off work and stuff, and now it’s because of those reasons and also the pandemic.

What has been your favorite job you’ve had so far? >> Selling merch for local bands at shows.

East? >> Long Island?
West? >> Colorado.
How often do you run the dishwasher? >> Every couple of days, when it works. (We’re waiting on Maintenance to come fix it, but of course they’re taking their sweet time.)
Do you wash your face at the sink or in the shower? >> I use micellar water, so I just do it in my room. Otherwise I’d do it in the shower because I hate using the sink for that.

Name a stereotype about your age that you don’t fit. >> Uh... I don’t have kids? Idk.

Do you have any uncommon kitchen appliances, such as espresso machines, waffle irons, etc? >> We do have a waffle iron (Sparrow got one for her birthday). I’m not sure what other kind of appliances are uncommon. Are rice cookers uncommon? I can’t imagine why they would be, they’re so convenient. Unless you just don’t like rice...

What is the highest level math class you’ve completed? >> Uh... pre-calculus? I don’t remember, man.

What is your opinion on Arby’s? >> I’ve only had it once, and that was on the way back from Colorado that one time, when the Greyhound stopped at Arby’s. I don’t remember what the food was like, though. Not even sure why I remember that we stopped there at all.
When you have your own kitchen, how will it be done? >> I mean, this kitchen is “mine”? I don’t live with parents or anything, so...? But I don’t have a choice in how it looks or anything, I didn’t build it.

The Viscountess, Prologue
A/N: I have been writing this for a while, the idea in my head. I really like the idea of such a theme that is so common and yet so unseen and poorly explored I just KNOW I had to write about this. More info below.
Book: Desire and Decorum, single mom AU
Pairing: Ernest Sinclaire x Nicole Donovan (MC)
Summary: Nicole finds herself a young widow with a young daughter and must start over after her husband’s death. New school, new job, new life. It’s hard without her dear husband, but her little Anne is worth it.
The night Alaric Donovan died, everything fell apart for Nicole. She just hadn’t left behind her heraldy of the Countess of Edgewater, but also his precious 2 years-old daughter, Anne. She was just too young to lose her father. She remembers calling her father in a hot mess of tears as he took Anne in as she decided to bury him with his family, the one he gave up to marry the heiress, who was then 19. Rushed, yes, but they were so in love. Alaric was only 25, but he was a blessing. They held a whole 10 years of marriage. In 2011, when Nicole was just 20, she fell pregnant. Alaric couldn’t believe it! His beloved, delicate wife was pregnant and willing to do have them.
Three weeks after her 21st birthday, she gave birth to a healthy, beautiful girl called Anne after Anne Neville and Anne Boleyn. Yes, Alaric and Nicole met in their history major class. They could talk from English royalty to Greek mythology and the use of witchcraft in the medieval era and the Worldwide II and the reality of living in the Victorian Era. They were the soulmates of the Oxford University, they were invincible!
After Nicole finished her studies early, they got married and lived happily.
But happiness is short, and soon the crisis came to England and Alaric found more difficult to be there for his family and the work. Nicole had to find a job as a waitress in a bar and with her daughter’s disability, the autism, it was all an impossible challenge. Soon, Alaric had to forgive his abusive mother so he could use her influence to find the best school for disabled children. It wasn’t easy, because the grandmother loathed entirely the kid, but wanted to win Alaric at all costs and get rid of Nicole. They argued nonstop and their plans to have a second child went to hell, for they barely spoke when they finally got the chance.
Alaric’s mom got him a job at the university of Cambridge, which made them move there. Poor Anne was just 4 years and found another school. She loathed changes, and cried over a week before settling it reclutantly.
Soon, Nicole noticed how tense Alaric was around her and how passive he was with Nicole. He was still a good father, he still helped her with the homework, made her soup when she was sick and loved her, but something was clearly on his mind and wouldn’t tell Nicole. She asked, begged him to tell him what was with him, but he shrugged it off saying that they’d talk in the morning.
But that morning never came.
The 27th of July of 2014, the police came at Nicole’s door at 3 a.m, announcing that Alaric died in a car crash in the middle of the storm and the drunk driver was nowhere to be found. Nicole dropped on her knees, wailing and screaming, holding her chest, clutching it.
Three days later, the funeral was made and it was the worst day of her life
“This wouldn’t have happened if he hadn’t married this whore!”
“Need I to remind you that this ‘whore’ is the mother of your granddaughter? Don’t you have a little of humanity?!”
“That little, stupid brat is a big mistake that should’ve never existed. You should be the one in that coffin. The world is better off without you, Natalie”
She slapped the woman, hard as she broke in tears “My name… is Nicole Donovan, you bitch!”
She grabbed her daughter, bid her goodbyes to her husband in the coffin and left as no-one defended her.
The next few years, she applied again in the university, graduated and got a job as a librarian in a cozy library in London, decided to make a new path for herself, for the sake of little Anne. She spoke to her father so it’d be Anne who, when she were 16, she’d be the Viscountess and soon heiress of Edgewater instead of her. She just wanted a life with her daughter, bonding over anything and being a small, happy and healthy family, with no toxicity around.
She worked her way up to find a fitting school for Anne without her former family-in-law’s influence, and they all accepted her for old time’s sake and to honor Alaric’s memory. Working her path as Nicole and not just Alaric’s widow wasn’t easy, but she was strong and determinated young woman. She owed that to her little Anne, who was now a 9 years-old girl: smart, driven, curious and stubborn, just like Alaric.
She wrote a story bed, called The Grand, Bold Alaric, telling epic tales of a time traveler called Alaric where he met gorgeous women and lived many lives and wrote them down to that woman who he’d marry. She wrote more and more, because her little Anne liked it.
That morning, she got a call from an unknown number
“Yes?”
“Good morning, are we talking with Nicole Donovan?”
“Yes, that’s me. Who’s asking?”
“We’re the Marie Curie Academy for Disabled Children in London. We wanted to comment you that the school of your daughter sent us her whole story and we were so fascinated for her and her abilites that we want to give you an interview! We’re just in the middle of a neighborhood where schools are normal, like the presitigious Cornfield Secondary School. We believe we could do of your girl the best at what she can and make her a rightful path to this world and let the rest know that disabled people are actually able to be great! What do you say? Will you stop by and give us a chance?”
She took a deep breath as she looked to her daughter, who played in her tablet to some math game and said, determinated
“I will. When and where do we meet again?”
Footsteps were sounding in the big, fancy halls of the academy as Anne beamed of how fancy it was as Nicole sighed, hoping it’d impress them. She was wearing an elegant suit for kids with her fanciest shoes, while Nicole wore a white shirt with a blue navy blazer and some jeans.
“Nicole and Anne Donovan?” The woman called.
“Ready, kiddo?”
Anne nodded as she got in confidently and Nicole followed suit. They looked at the woman before them, in an elegant attire, her hair in an elegant bun and a white suit.
“Please take a seat. You want any drinks?”
“Water, please”
As the paperwork was settled down, the principal introduced herself
“My name is Principal Donna Bowman. Now, I’d like to ask you a few questions, Mrs. Donovan” Her gaze softened and smiled at Anne “Anne, why don’t dazzle Mr. Chambers with your drawing skills while you Mum and I talk?”
“It’d be an honor to see you draw, Anne” The man who was apparently Mr. Chambers beamed. Anne followed him to the door where a lot of stuff for kids was there
“Now, Mrs. Donovan, even if your daughter is an impressive, bright and clever girl, there are a few things that concern us about you”
“M-me? I thought this was about Anne”
“Yes, but there are a few things we’d love to clear up with you. Like, for example, the father’s presence in Anne’s life. Are you a recent divorcee?”
The memory of Alaric hit her in the chest as she took a deep breath and nodded negatively “No, ma’am. Alaric died when Anne was 2”
“I’m sorry for your loss, Mrs. Donovan”
“I- Thank you”
“Now, tell us about your place work. Even with a scholarship, it is for some people difficult to maintain”
“Well, I have a History degree and major and I work in a library a few miles away from here. I have an agreement with the boss to prepare Anne for school, drop her and collect her”
The woman nodded as she revised some papers before asking her
“Last question: Why do you think Anne is worth it? To be here, I mean”.
She took a deep breath “Anne might see as a silent, shy little girl, but she’s actually intelligent, driven, with potential and can adapt at any situation. She’s stubborn. She’s not a quitter. She is strong, resilient and adapts in many other situations quickly and better than any adults I have seen. She has a keen mind and even if she’s a woman of few words, it makes every word she says worthy. She is kind, with a very open mind for such a young age and loyal to the bone. She is peaceful, the voice of reason and the most supportive kid I ever witnessed. When I was struggling at work, her words kept me sane. That’s why she is worthy and with due respect, it’d be a big mistake not to accept her because of my money rank”.
The woman nodded as she scribbled in the notebook before breaking into a smile.
“I’ll be damned, Mrs. Donovan, I’m sold. Congratulations, your daughter is accepted. I will start the proceedings. Here, have the school number”.
In a minute, the kind man called Bart emerged with Anne giggling and observing a drawing, unusual thing of Anne. She grabbed her mother’s hand and pointed excitedly to her drawing. It was her dressed as Wonder Woman and Anne was Wonder Girl. Nicole smiled at her and bid her goodbyes. They both emerged from the school, beaming as they watched London’s sun setting, making a peaceful and unusual afternoon. It was surprising that it hadn’t started raining just yet. Anne was collecting different leaves and went to collect one and she observed. She was about to snap a photo when someone crashed into her, making her wobble and almost fall! A pair of strong arms grabbed her in the act as she grabbed the shoulder by instinct. She looked up to see who saved her from falling: a rather tall man, blue eyes and a slight beard, his expression stoic and his brown hair messy. He helped her steady as she cleared her throat “Look, I appreciate your saving, but you should watch where you’re going”.
“Apologies. I did not see you at all”.
“Mommy!” Anne called. She glared at the man before rushing towards her daughter.
“Anne! What is it?” She asked, worried.
“Are you okay? That rude broody man almost dropped you”.
She chuckled at her before kissing her head, comforting her “It’s nothing Mama cannot handle. Let’s go”.
When the classes started, Nicole looked at her daughter, proud of her as she braided her hair. She kissed her forehead and observed the herd of children running to the school and how peaceful and noiseless Anne’s future classmates were. She looked with curiosity to the school beside Anne’s and found that broody man again, waving goodbye to his daughter. She was older than Anne, maybe two or three years older, with long, black hair in a low ponytail and intense blue eyes like her father, a rather tall girl and a serious expression. Like father like daughter she guessed. She did heard that both schools collaborated together to show that disabled people and ‘regular people’ could get along and respect each other.
“Excuse me, miss?” She turned around to see a tall, black handsome man behind her, a shy smile on his face, scratching the back of his neck “I hope I am not bothering or being too forward, but I wanted to say that I like your style and you have a beautiful daughter”.
“Oh, thank you! You’re very kind and sweet…?”.
“Luke. Name’s Luke” He introduced himself.
She gave him a polite smile “I am Nicole Dono—Ahem, Foredale. Nicole Foredale” It’s been so long since she used her maiden name, that it felt weird, but last thing she wanted was some stranger knowing her as a widow. It was time to leave that habit behind. Alaric would have understood.
“My friends and I saw you here lonely and wondered if you wanna join us and have some beers together, get to know the schools and neighborhoods. Alas, our only female friend is sick of us, a bunch of men”.
“I can’t blame her. I actually have a day off, so… I’m in, I guess”.
He smiled relieved as he indicated her where they’d go, his hand close to her back in case she needed guidance. They ended in a cozy, warm bar. It had some fancy seats of multi people there and here, people chatting and charging their phones and a welcoming décor. Luke waved at some group and headed with Nicole to them.
“Guys, this is Nicole Foredale. Nicole, these people are Bart, Yusuf, Annabelle, Hamid and Ernest, even though he’s so silent and stoic that sometimes he looks like a furniture. Say hi, guys, and be nice to her! Not all days I can persuade a beautiful woman to join us!”.
The woman there stood with a beautiful, tan skin, black, curly hair and grey eyes. She smiled at her as she greeted her with two air kisses “Hm, I like this one, Luke. The shocking thing is that she acceded to come with you” The woman teased.
The other man, with Muslim features smiled at her widely as he greeted her with two air kisses too, a casual but extravagant look “A pleasure. It’s been long since we had the privilege of such a beauty to sit with us. No offense, though, dear Annabelle”.
The other men, Bart and Yusuf, a very adorable gay couple, greeted her with beaming smiles as they praised her too and she felt welcome. When she turned to greet the so called Ernest, she froze in her place. That was the man that almost made her fall!
“You… are the jerk that almost trampled me”.
“I’m sorry?” He looked a bit puzzled, but then his eyes lit with recognition “Oh… right. I didn’t notice you then”.
The whole desk looked at them, amused and shocked.
“Well” Bart commented, enjoying the scene “this lunch will be interesting”.

Getting to know Spiderboy: Chapter 14
Pairing: Peter Parker x OC Genre: Friendship/ Adventure/ Family Warnings: Curious Ned, short chapter
A/N: GIFs not mine, story dividers by @whimsicalrogers
Story Summary: Ten minutes. Ten minutes was all it took. She found his backpack in the alley and left before he got there. Now, before Peter knows it, Ned thinks he has a secret girlfriend and Spiderman has to be her kibble runner.
Story masterlist here
Peter: I messed up. BIG TIME.
Nadia just stepped through a portal to her apartment when her phone buzzed. It had barely been two hours since she and Peter went their separate ways. She wondered what could have happened in such a small time frame.
Immediately, she called Peter, worried. The line only rang twice before he answered.
"What do you mean 'messed up'?" The young woman asked before the teenager could say anything, making sure her tone was concerned and not angry. She knew that Peter would ramble if she let him lead the conversation.
::Ned found out, Nadia!:: His voice was a harsh whisper. ::He found out I'm Spider-Man.::
"How?" She asked plainly, cutting in to help keep his answers short and to the point.
::He saw me sneak into the apartment while I was still in costume.::
Nadia raised an eyebrow, "You didn't change before going in?" She asked, confused. Didn't she give him his backpack before sending him home?
::He came over tonight, and I think I might have been a bit distracted at school when he talked about it. He was sitting on the lower bunk, I didn't see him.:: He groaned, frustrated with himself.
"Oh boy…" Nadia didn't know what else to say. At least there wasn't any danger and no one was hurt.
::He's going to ask all these questions at school tomorrow. I just know it.:: He sighed, defeated.
"Peter, I know it seems bad right now, but it might be a good thing." Nadia started.
::A g-good thing? H-How can it b-be a-::
"Breathe, Peter." She said sternly. Nadia was glad the next few moments were silent except for his breathing. She counted in her mind and gently instructed, "A little slower." It took a minute for the raspy sound of hyperventilation to turn into slow, shaky breaths. "Ned is your best friend. Isn't it a good thing that you won't have to keep such a big part of your life from him anymore? That you don't have to lie or make excuses?" The young woman asked.
::I-I guess… Keeping everything from him always made me feel guilty.:: Peter said, his voice becoming more steady and his pitch returning to normal.
She heard the sound of him let out one big breath of air, as though conceding. ::You're right. I'm just a bit worried about Ned. You know how- how well... enthusiastic and excited he can get.::
"Ah." Nadia chuckled a bit and nodded in understanding even if he couldn't see her. "You definitely have a bit of a challenge there. It's a good thing you've calmed down then. All I can say is good luck." There was a tone of finality in her statement.
::N-Nadia! Wait!-::
"I can't really give you any advice, Peter. You can handle it, I'm sure. You know Ned, after all, not me." She laughed fully this time.
::Nadia…::
"Hey, get some sleep, Spiderboy. You'll need it for tomorrow."
::O-Okay… Okay.:: He replied softly.
Nadia ended the call. She knew if she kept talking to Peter about the situation, he would start overthinking things and just get more nervous.
She understood his nerves though. Ned was very excitable.
"So who's the new hero you're working with? I saw the security cam video on Youtube. Whoever they are, did you notice they've been following you for a while already?" Ned asked as they walked to school.
Peter bit his lip. So other people noticed for a while now?
"There've been pictures of Spider-man with a weird shadow or blur recently. Some people think it's like in those Final Destination movies where there's some kind of grim reaper or omen that someone is about to die."
Peter sighed, there was no use denying it, really, "It's really not my secret to share, Ned. It'll be all up to her-"
"Dude! The newbie's a her!?" Ned exclaimed. The thought of his best friend being a superhero really fired him up, but finding out a new female vigilante made her appearance too doubled his excitement. "You can't really tell from the pictures, because she's always a blur or a shadow. In the video, she just rushed in, then you can barely see her in a corner of the frame."
Throughout the day at school, in different classes, Ned continued to pepper Peter with questions about his powers, the Avengers, and occasionally, Nadia.
-- SPANISH --
"What are her powers exactly?"
"Magic."
"Whoah! Like Harry Potter magic? Does she use a wand? What's the core? Unicorn hair? Ooh! Or dragon's heartstring! Does she make potions like Snape? Or is it Gandalf magic?"
-- HISTORY --
"Did she like, ask to be your sidekick?" Ned whispered.
"No. She's not my sidekick." Peter said firmly. "She's my partner."
"Like Batman and Wonderwoman? That's cool! What's her superhero name by the way?"
"She hasn't decided yet."
"It should be something like Shadow, or maybe Wraith. She looks like a ghost, plus the whole reaper thing on the internet. Circe could work. It's the name of the Greek goddess of magic."
-- MATH --
"Do you two like have attack strategies and stuff?"
"Not really. We haven't worked together long."
"You should have like attack form delta or cool code words like that! That would be so badass."
-- CHEMISTRY --
"Is she pretty?"
"Wh-What?!" Peter hissed, his face turning red. He was saved from giving an answer by the teacher who called the two teens' attention.
Ned still got his answer from his friend's blush and stuttering reaction, his mouth forming an 'O' followed by a silly grin.
-- GYM --
"Is she one of the Avengers?"
"No."
"Is she like Tony Stark's long lost daughter? She's dark-haired. Or maybe the Winter Soldier's? He has black hair, right? She used magic in that video though, I bet she's Asgardian. Oh my God! Dude, she's not Loki's daughter is she?!"
"Ned, no! Shhhh." Peter shushed. His friend's speculations were getting a bit out of hand.
It was after coach Wilson passed by them that they heard Liz and a group of her friends gossiping on the bleachers.
"-Well, what about the Spider-man?"
That earned the two teenage boys' rapt attention.
"Didn't you see that security cam video on Youtube?" He fought off like four guys!" Liz said, her tone full of admiration.
"But with the help of another hero." Someone spoke up.
"I think the other guy was just back-up. He barely did anything in that fight, and Spider-man took care of the robbers." Liz argued.
"Oh my gosh… She's defending him. She's crushing on Spider-man!" One girl gushed.
"No way!"
Liz shrugged, smiling. "Kinda…"
The others speculated that he might be some totally burned, older guy.
Liz simply said that it wouldn't matter to her because what was important was the person on the inside.
"Peter knows Spider-man!" Ned blurted out so loud, everybody in the gym heard and stopped what they were doing.
“They’re friends...”
Peter closed his eyes for a split-second. He'd prepared himself mentally for Ned's onslaught of questions, but there was no way he could have prepared himself for this.
Panic set in and he hurriedly stood up to try and explain.
"Ah-No. A-Actually…"
He really wished Nadia was here. Maybe she did know some Harry Potter magic and could obliviate everyone in the gym.

all the time in the world (yanan fluff)
Genre | Soulmates AU
Pairing | Yanan x Reader
Words | 3.5k
Summary | Ever since you were little, you’d heard about soulmates. You’d been told that there was one person, just a single soul out of the seven billion on the planet, that was meant to join with yours. But how long would it take for you to Connect?
Warnings | None. Just cute stuff. 😊
Note | Wrote this for a request! Also sorry this is not quite up to my usual standards, I blew through it kind of fast lol.
You would never forget the day it happened.
You were tucked away in the library, hunched over the table that sat next to the big window, trying desperately to complete your math homework. But your best friend, Jamie, wouldn’t stop laughing to herself.
“What’s so funny?” You tried not to sound irritated, but her giggles made it really hard for you to focus.
“Sorry,” she spoke quietly, trying to hide her smile. She pointed to her temple, indicating that she was Connecting with her soulmate. “Marcus is being inappropriate.”
“Could you ask him to leave you alone so we can study?”
“Yeah, of course.” She closed her eyes for a second as she concentrated on her telepathic message, and then she nodded. “Done. I told him I’d talk more later.”
“Thank you.” You returned to your math problem, trying not to make it obvious how much you’re struggling with algebra.
“Have you heard anything from your soulmate yet?” Jamie pried. “Do you still try to Connect with them?”
Disheartened, you frown. “Of course I do, but nothing yet. I don’t know if it’ll ever happen.” You send out messages every morning and every night, but you still haven’t managed to Connect.
No one really knows how it works, only that one day the Connection is formed between you and your soulmate, and you’re able to communicate telepathically for the rest of your lives together. Most people start to connect around the time they hit puberty, but on rare occasions the Connection might not happen until you’re both in your thirties or forties.
After your sixteenth birthday a few months ago, you started to think you might be one of those rare cases. You absolutely hated the thought of having to wait that long to find your soulmate, but you didn’t really get a say in the matter. You just had to stay patient.
You wanted to start dating, but everyone around you was already madly in love with their soulmate, which made it impossible to date casually. People thought dating was a waste of time, anyway, since you’d really just be killing time until your soulmate came around.
“Of course it’ll happen. It always does.” Jamie sounded so confident as she comforted you. “Just stay positive.”
With a curt nod, you tried to return to your homework. But now that she’s got you thinking about soulmates...
Are you any good at algebra? You try to Connect. If you are, I could really use your help.
And then you heard it. For the first time in your life, you heard a voice respond:
你在哪?
You completely froze up when you heard him. It was the most beautiful, melancholy voice you had ever heard. What did he just say? What language was that? Everyone always remembers their soulmate’s first words, but how could you ever remember the foreign sounds you just heard?
“Oh my God…” You couldn’t believe it. “Oh my God I just- he just…”
“What?” Jamie looked up from her homework, wide-eyed. “What just happened?”
“I heard him!” You tried to keep your voice down, but that proved to be difficult when you were so full of such raw adrenaline. “There was a voice! He talked to me!”
“Oh my God, _____! What did he say?” Jamie completely lit up, just as ecstatic as you at the good news.
And then your heart sank. “I have no idea. It wasn’t English.”
“Oh,” she breathed, perplexed. “Well that’s… uncommon, but not unheard of. Do you know what it was? What did it sound like?”
“I don’t know… it might have been an Asian language? I’m not really sure. He sounded… sweet. He has a gentle voice.” You smiled just thinking about it. You needed to hear it again.
Hello? You feebly tried to respond. Can you hear me?
A few moments passed, and you were greeted with nothing but silence in return.
“I don’t think he can hear me. I think it was a fluke,” you confess.
“That’s okay! This is still great news!”
She was right. Your smile returned. “It is. It’s fantastic news!”
***
You started hearing from your soulmate multiple times a day. Most of the time it would be just a short phrase, but sometimes the sound of his voice could go on for minutes at a time. You wondered if he was venting to you, and you wished that you could be there for him. You came to love every message you received, even when it interfered with your school work.
Every time you heard him, you tried to respond. Sometimes it felt like you were having a conversation, but more often than not it was obvious that your Connection was one-sided. One-sided Connections were the most common way that Connections started, so you weren’t concerned about that part of it. Sometimes it could be months or years before your Connection fully formed, and that’s what bothered you most.
After taking some time to research Asian languages, you eventually decided that your soulmate must be communicating in Mandarin. Not exactly the easiest language for you to learn, unfortunately, but you’d gladly take on the challenge for your him. You didn’t even hesitate in deciding to learn the language.
Your parents were more than happy to enroll you in an online Mandarin language class, and you studied harder than you ever had in your life to learn your soulmate’s way of speaking. And little by little, you’re able to understand fragments of his messages.
...waiting patiently.
Today… got worse. …better soon.
Where are you?
When it was time to prepare for university, you easily decided to major in Mandarin with the goal of becoming a translator. Learning the language had become your whole life, and you found genuine joy in it.
Fragments became sentences, and you’d lay awake at night just listening to his messages. He obviously had no idea that you lived in a different time zone, but you didn’t mind the late-night broadcasts.
Sometimes they were sweet…
I thought about you a lot today. I wonder if you can hear me. I want so badly to talk to you, but I’ll be patient. I wonder what you’re like, what makes you happy, what passions and interests you have. Recently I’ve been training to sing well. Maybe one day we’ll meet and I can sing for you.
Sometimes they were heartbreaking…
I miss my family. I knew that moving away would be hard, but I’m too busy to ever visit and all I want is to see my parents. I love them so much. I hope this message isn’t a burden for you.
And every night you tried to respond. You tried to tell him that you thought about him too, that you hoped he was doing alright. But he never seemed to hear.
Although you’d come to love the sound of his voice and every single message he sent, you couldn’t help but be frustrated by the lack of personal information he shared. He’d been communicating with you for years, but hadn’t so much as hinted at his name. You asked him for it constantly, even though he couldn’t hear you, and you hoped that one day he would tell you.
***
One morning, you were startled awake by his incredibly ecstatic voice. You couldn’t remember ever being forcefully woken up by him, but his voice was so loud, like he was shouting in your ear.
We did it! We debuted! I just performed my first stage with my members and I am so proud of how far we’ve come! And it was so much fun. I can’t believe we finally made it! Even though we just started, we already have fans. I’m so happy and I just want to perform again!
It was as if the energy he gained from performing had transferred to you, and you suddenly felt wide awake. You jumped out of bed and tore into your roommate’s bedroom, excitedly shouting at her in Mandarin.
“Mingzhu! He’s a singer! That’s what he does! He’s a professional singer!”
Mingzhu screamed in fear at your loud entrance. “_____, I was sleeping! What the hell?”
You fell onto her bed. “This is great news! We can finally figure out who my soulmate is!”
You had met Mingzhu through your university’s Chinese Language and Culture Club, which you joined to help deepen your understanding of Mandarin. Mingzhu grew up in China and fluently spoke Mandarin, and it was hugely helpful to have someone she could practice speaking with. Plus, the two of you had a lot in common and you genuinely enjoyed her friendship.
She was still very connected to her Chinese roots and remained in tune with Asian pop culture. Because of that, you knew she’d be able to help you track down your soulmate, now that you had learned something important about him.
“I’m going to start doing some research to see who just debuted today. Can you help?” You held her hand tightly, hoping to all that is holy that she might agree.
With a sleepy roll of her eyes, she nodded. “Fine. Get me my laptop.”
***
It didn’t take long. You definitely started off on the wrong path by researching Chinese debuts - you didn’t realize that when he talked about moving away from his family, he meant that he moved out of the country. But with Mingzhu’s help, you finally found his group.
They were a ten person Korean boy group named Pentagon. And he was the only Chinese member, Yanan.
And he. Was. Beautiful.
The moment you saw his photo, your heart was overcome with love. He looked just as sweet as he always sounded in your head, with his dark hair, warm eyes, small nose, and gentle smile.
You found their debut performance online and you lost count of how many times you watched it. You were disappointed by Yanan’s lack of screentime, but whenever your gaze latched onto him, your smile could not be contained.
How could you have gotten so lucky?
Of course, there was just a small shred of doubt that it could really be him. It was kind of a guess, after all. But too much of Yanan’s story lined up with what your soulmate has told you, and it just felt so right when you looked at him.
You spent the whole day watching any video content of him you could find, drowning yourself in the reality show that led to Pentagon’s debut. Of course, everything was in Korean instead of Mandarin, and you weren’t always able to find English subtitles, but it didn’t matter. You were in love.
At least, you were as in love as you could be with someone that you’ve never actually met. With someone who still doesn’t know you exist.
Well… there’s only one way to change that.
***
You took your seat in the middle of the crowd, anxious for Pentagon to come on stage for their Runaway comeback recording for Show Champion. It had been over a year since you discovered your soulmate’s identity, and in that time you managed to finish your schooling and save up enough money to fly to Korea. So there you were, in a completely new country, surrounded by people speaking a language that you barely understood, entirely unsure of how you’d get Yanan to notice you… You had no plan, but at the very least you were there. That’s the most you could do, since your Connection still hadn’t formed.
Maybe you could hang around Cube Entertainment’s building to see if you crossed paths? Or maybe you could find a way to sneak backstage?
No, all of those options would make you seem like a total creep, and that’s not the impression you want to make on your soulmate.
The more you thought about it, the more impossible it seemed that you could ever get to him without your Connection.
Yanan, I’m here. You tried desperately to Connect. Yanan, please hear me. Please. I’m here.
There was no response.
Maybe it was dumb of you to come the whole way to Korea before your Connection was complete.
But no matter - all of your worries get wiped away as soon as the boys step on stage.
Suddenly he’s there. He’s right there in front of you. Yanan, your pretty blonde boy, was right there, wearing his hoodie and ripped jeans and looking like a total boyfriend.
Your whole body got hot from head to toe, your fingertips started tingling, and you had the distinct feeling of completely losing your breath. In that moment, you didn’t know if you were feeling something magical because of your Connection or if you were just having a panic attack because everything was suddenly so real.
And then Yanan shook his hand at his side, as if he felt something too.
Yanan, I’m here! You tried again.
No reaction.
The music started. The boys performed. Yanan still didn’t get enough lines, but the ones he got were the most perfect lines in the whole song. His voice was beautiful as ever and he killed the choreography. As the song ended, you were on the verge of tears because of how overwhelmingly happy you felt.
You knew he wouldn’t hear you, but you just had to tell him. Yanan, you did amazingly! You danced so well and you sang beautifully. I am so proud of you and I LOVE YOU! Yanan, I love you!
All of the sudden, Yanan broke out of his ending pose, his calm, confident expression turning into one of total shock.
And then he responded.
Soulmate? Are you there?
You couldn’t control the loud gasp that left your lungs. You can hear me? Yanan, I’m here! I’m in the audience, I’m here!
Yanan looked out over the crowd as if he could find you in the sea of people. Before he could spot you, they were ushered off stage and he was gone, but his voice remained inside your head. I’ll find you. Don’t leave. Please, don’t leave. I need to see you.
You responded. I won’t leave, Yanan. I’m here. Tell me where to find you.
I’ll get my manager to help. I can’t believe this! He sounded so excited. How did you know it was me? How long have you known?
I’ve known you for years, Yanan. You’ve been with me, talking to me for years without even knowing it.
He was quiet for a while, but you stayed patient. You had waited for this long, you can wait another few minutes. When he Connected again, he asked for your name and row number and said that a staff member would come to get you.
It was so unreal to think that it was actually happening. You were really Connected, and you were about to meet the man you’ve grown to love since you first heard his voice six years ago.
Just as he promised, a staff member came to collect you and bring you back to the waiting room. It was no secret that idols had soulmates too, and more often than not their soulmates were just regular people. Most of Pentagon had already publicly Connected, with only Yanan and Wooseok still waiting for their Connections to happen. You knew the fact that Yanan finally Connected would be reason for the rest of the group to celebrate, and you’d be more than welcome to come see all of them.
You were brought back to a small room that was far too full of people. The members were scattered throughout, carrying on while the makeup artists blotted their foreheads and noses.
The staff member that ushered you in pointed off to the left and said something in Korean that you didn’t quite understand, but you didn’t need to know her words. You followed her gesture and your gaze fell on your tall blonde soulmate, who had been watching you from the moment you entered the room.
“Yanan,” you breathed.
Your body grew warm and your fingers tingled again. He was so far away, and yet he was the closest he’d ever been. Your whole body was electric in his presence and you knew he felt the same way.
Is it you? His voice sounded in your head, his eyes widening as they fixated on you.
It’s me. Why were you frozen in place? Why couldn’t you seem to move when every cell in your body ached to touch him?
Yanan broke out of the spell first, a sudden smile coming to his lips as he approached you, laughing. And then he spoke to you out loud for the very first time. “I thought you’d be Chinese. Your Mandarin is very impressive.”
“Thank you.” You felt lightheaded as he reached a hand out for you, and you intertwined your fingers with his, the heat of your Connection flashing up your arm as you finally touched. “I learned it just for you.”
“Really?”
“Of course. All of the sudden I had this Chinese kid talking in my head. I had to figure out what he was saying.” You laughed, and Yanan’s sweet laughter mingled with yours.
With his free hand, he touched your hair, your cheek bones, your jaw, your shoulder. Discovering you and cherishing you. Ingraining the image of his soulmate into the depths of his mind.
“You said you loved me. Is that true?” Yanan’s thumb swept across your cheek, his eyes searching your face.
“I love you with all of my heart, Yanan. I’ve loved you for years.” It was way too easy for you to confess. Being with him just felt so right. You had nothing to hide. “But don’t worry, I don’t expect you to love me right away. We’re soulmates, but love still takes time.”
By that point, the others in the room had started to notice what was going on, and they all stood in giddy anticipation. Kino shouted something in Korean, and Hui smacked his arm, lecturing him for whatever he said. Yanan’s face grew red and he responded in a flustered way.
“What did he say?” you asked. “I don’t know Korean.”
“You don’t?” He frowned, realizing that you really were as foreign as you appeared. “You’re not from here, are you.”
You shook your head. “I came from the other side of the world to see you. This is my first time in Korea.”
“How long will you be here?”
“I can only stay for another week and a half. But we’ll work something out until I can move here.”
“You’d move here for me?” Yanan seemed a little bewildered yet concerned that you were so ready to uproot your life for him.
Sternly, you responded, “Of course! You’re my soulmate! I’d do anything for you.”
Hongseok spoke up just then, and the other members laughed at his comment, Yanan included.
“What are they saying?” You smiled and squeezed his hand. “Tell me!”
“Hongseok said ‘They’re already bickering, they must really be soulmates.’” Yanan pulled you into an unexpected hug as he chuckled, and you eagerly wrapped your arms around his waist.
You listened to the gentle beating of his heart and truly felt like you were home. “And Kino? What did he say?”
You could feel Yanan’s hesitance to respond, but he translates eventually. “He said, ‘Just kiss her already!’”
Your heart fluttered at the words, and you pulled away to look up at him. “Yeah, that would be nice.”
“You’re a little spitfire, aren’t you.” He cupped your face with a wild grin. “I like that.”
“You better.” You grinned, too. “You’re stuck with me, after all.”
With a chuckle, he leaned down and pressed his lips to yours, officially sealing your Connection. Warmth flowed through you and peaceful energy radiated from you, bathing the room in a calm aura.
When you parted, he murmured, “I’m sorry that you had to wait for me for so long. I can’t wait to learn everything about you.”
“We’re in no rush. We have all the time in the world.”

University asks
from this blog
How far along are you in your studies? About to start the 4th/5th year of my undergrad program. So close, yet so far lol
How far do you plan on pursuing academia? I want to get my PhD and maybe I’ll do some post-doc work after that?
What made you want to attend university? My mom wasn’t able to attend in her home country and my dad got his Bachelor’s on his dad’s GI Bill. They allowed me to see how there are some limits without it and how education in this country is your ticket to money and living comfortably.
What do you study? Biomedical Engineering + Chemical/Biological Engineering
What do you wish to accomplish by studying at university? The end goal is to contribute to the knowledge in the field and have an impact on the community by inspiring underrepresented youth like me
What do you want to do with your degree? Be a researcher and teach in some capacity
What’s your dream job? Being a researcher and influencer for Latinx youth in STEM
Has university been what you expected it to be? Tbh, I don’t think so even though I didn’t really know what to expect. I’ve learned SO much along the way that no one had the knowledge to tell me when before uni
What’s the most important thing you have learned about yourself at university? That I’m strong af, I can do whatever I want to in life–literally. And not to compare yourself to others
What surprised you the most about university? The types of friends I made, people I met, and places I went bc of opportunities through uni
What classes are you taking this/next semester? For fall 2020, I am taking Chemical Engineering Design 1 (not truly a design class. more like ethics, safety, etc.), Transport Phenomena in Biomedical Eng, Separation Processes, Biochemistry, and an Independent Study.
What has been the most interesting class you’ve taken? This past semester I took a biomedical eng project-based course and it was LIT af, very challenging but projects were super realistic and interesting
What has been your favourite class you’ve taken? Same course as 12^ like it made me realize my true style of learning and working and it was difficult but so so cool
What is your favourite professor like? Haha, same prof as 12 & 13^^ he was laid back, challenging, young and tech-savvy. More than anything, he was there if you just needed someone to talk to. He didn’t ‘bend’ rules but he knew what it’s like to be a student with limited resources and no super-human abilities. Just a cool guy I’d grab a drink with
If you have to write a thesis, what are you going to write it on? I will have to provide a written report for the independent study so I’m gonna ask if it can be like a thesis. It’ll probs be on something like improving multi-modal neuroimaging data fusion using machine learning
What is your weird academic niche? I’m not really sure. Sometimes I feel like I am my own niche? Lmao. I don’t really know how to answer this tbh
What’s your favourite thing about academia? That honesty and integrity are highly valued and people just like wondering about things on a deeper level and bigger scale and have conversations about it
What’s your least favourite thing about academia? That it’s toxic: not as diverse, kinda bureaucratic, research matters more than ability to teach (in the US)
Would you go to a different university if you had to choose again? Yes and no: instead of going to a different uni then transferring to where I am now, I would 100% just have gone to the one I’m at now in the first place
Would you choose a different subject if you had to choose again? I don’t think so
If you couldn’t study the subject you study now, what would you study? Software Engineering or Comp Sci
What is your favourite course style? More applied learning, like projects. Not as exam heavy.
Theoretical or practical? AHHH! Both
Best book you’ve had to read for a course? Numerical Methods in MATLAB for Engineers
Worst book you’ve had to read for a course? Molecular Physical Chemistry for Engineers by Yates and Johnson OMFG LITERAL TRASH, even our instructor hated it
Favourite online resource? YouTube lol– broad but legit the best way to learn ANYTHING
The topic of the best essay you’ve written? I have a problem where everything I wrote in the past I now see as really bad bc my writing is always evolving. Most recent essay–maternal mortality rates in the US and race gaps within
Would you ever consider getting a phd? I am indeed considering haha
Who is doing the most interesting research in your field at the moment? In my research, Vince Calhoun or Danilo Bzdok. In my major, I’m not sure
Do you have any minors? I haven’t declared it officially, but I think I can achieve a math minor my 5th year
What is subject you wish your university taught but doesn’t? I don’t blame them cause it’s just now gaining more popularity, but like a strictly computational biology/biostatistics subject would be amazing
What is an area of your subject you wish your university taught but doesn’t? Same as 31^
The best advice anyone has ever given you about university? Do everything, don’t hold back. An opportunity can come from the smallest of things
Do you care about your grades? Yeah, but it’s not everything
Do you think you study enough? Sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t
How did your attitude towards studying and school change between high school and university? Uni hit me like a truck bc my high school was not the best. I learned to live and breathe studying, how to learn, how to manage my time, and my attitude is more serious and business-minded, but also have crazy fun in the right time and place
What do you do to rewind? Like to unwind? exercise, make music, watch movies, hit the hot tub
Best tip for making friends at university? Be yourself and be honest :)
Are you involved in any clubs/societies/extracurriculars? President for a diversity student org and I do intramural sports!
Have you done or are you planning on doing any internships? I’ve completed one research internship and I hope to do another next summer.
What is an interesting subject that you would never study yourself? Physics probably lol
What has been your favourite thing about university so far? The people, the location of my uni, the learning
What is your plan B career? Work in industry after undergrad, probably in biotech
Do you ever regret your choice of subject or university? Not really
Do you ever regret going to university? Hell no
How do you study? I try to vary it– I’ll read, do a crap ton of practice problems, do a study group with a lot of talking and teaching each other concepts, watch videos from other sources
What do you wish you’d done differently in your first year? Not been a student-athlete
What things do you think you did right in your first year? Was honest with myself
What are your thoughts on Academia? It can be good and bad, and it’s up to us as the next generation to change the bad :)
Strangest university tip you have? Hmmmmm... Don’t assume all your advisers/administration/profs know what you’re truly capable of. (not strange, but I don’t think it’s that common)

She Used to Be Mine (Jeremy Heere x Reader Pt 19)
Song: She Used to Be Mine from Waitress
Need to Catch Up? tumblr has now officially takes things out of the tags that have lists. The link to every part and my masterlist is in my description for easy access!
A/N: Oh my god I finally posted! I went on vacation and had so many exams the weeks before, and I had so much other work, so I’m sorry that this is so delayed! I should be back to regularly posting soon after next weekend (I have another event coming up)!
Taglist: @retrogarden @be-more-heidi-hansen @catatonic-kuragin @scarsonthecuffsofyourjeans @bluhimaweirdo @stargirl-murphy
Trigger Warnings: Mentions of an abusive boyfriend, mentions of character death, mentions of abuse, mentions of injuries, mentions of math, sad Jeremy, IF I MISSED ANYTHING LET ME KNOW
He watches you walk away, off into the distance before realizing how creepy that probably is. Jeremy grabs his keys from his pocket, phone still situated where it had been before. He walks carefully back to his car, hoping, wishing, that this is the last date you’ll ever be on with your boyfriend.
Jeremy jammed his key into the lock, exhaustion seeping into his regular routine, the typical for Thursday afternoons after an hour and a half math recitation. His brain is a mess of grey matter, he can feel the dullness inside of his eyes, paler than usual skin, even though his day consisted mostly of sitting, he still felt the tiredness through his legs. His backpack weighed down on his shoulders more than it normally did as he opened the door and threw his keys back into his jean pocket. He opened the door to his and Michael’s dorm, his eyes scanning over the posters that had been hung there when the two had moved in, the two carpooling in Michael’s PT Cruiser while their parents drove themselves and the boy’s stuff in their separate cars.
He throws his backpack onto the left side of the room, trash only slightly littering his side—he didn’t have time to clean up before his Calculus I exam that day. Darkness enveloped him as you continued to step through his side of the large dorm room, Michael’s side untouched from this morning. His brain had instead been skimming over the extremely long related rates and optimization problems. As much as they logically made sense, the calculation of them always weighed him down, each answer ending up being some fraction or decimal he didn’t particularly appreciate. His brain went over the process once again, constantly refreshing and double checking his answer, worried that he’d made a minor error and messed the entire thing up. He toes off his shoes, leaving them askew for the moment—he’d clean them up and put them away later. His brain was too tired for any real coherent interaction for a while.
His eyes scan the room, stopping for a second on the TV and switch against the wall that perfectly split the room into 2. Of course, a gaming console was how the two thought it would be best to divide the room. Jeremy had been right at Red Robin all those months ago: the bean bags wouldn’t fit in here. As Jeremy turns to sit onto his bed, eyes scanning the white walls that consume him, his eyes fall onto the postcards, the posters, the notes that had been sent to him. Of course, almost monthly, Christine would send him a friendship letter, an update about how magical college was and all the friends she was making. She’d updated him a few times, telling him that she decided to go to counselling because the stress was too much sometimes, and he had never been prouder of her. His eyes continue circling around the room, taking note of the blue sweater that hung near his bed in case he got cold in the middle of the night or right before getting out of bed.
Jeremy swings his feet around and lays down on the bed, a little bummed that Michael isn’t there so he can vent to him about his answer that was a fraction his professor said it wouldn’t be a fraction but it was. So, laying down and taking in the glow in the dark stars that he’d transported from home and stuck onto his ceiling at school would have to do. Another 15 minutes or so pass, and Jeremy is still going over each pencil mark, each moment of erasing over and over again. It isn’t until he gets the same answer 4 or 5 times in his mind that he gives it a rest, deciding that it would be healthier to focus on something else for a little bit. The exam is over, 2 out of 4 done. With no other classes for the rest of the day, Jeremy also takes a second before deciding that homework could wait until his brain was more coherent that it currently was. That, and the only class he had the next day was calculus yet again. The only logical thing his brain can come up with is to watch something on Netflix while curled up under the covers until Michael gets back from his classes.
As Jeremy gets up and grabs his laptop, his phone vibrates. There’s a text from one of his newer friends on it, asking him how he thought the exam went. He supposed that the text was a good thing. He has friends—he was making friends, too. It wasn’t hard to once he’d kind of broken out of his shell and got more comfortable with himself. And that was of course after Jeremy realized that most of his peers felt the same things he did ever so often. Of course, he left out the part about the weird super computer that tried to take over the school; he assumed that wasn’t a universal experience.
But Jeremy ignored the text for the minute. His brain wasn’t ready to comprehend everything in a healthy way yet. He knew that he was going to obsess over that one problem up until the minute that the grade would be entered into Blackboard, which could be hours, days, even sometimes weeks. He sets his laptop onto his bed before crawling back into it, fingers gliding over the mousepad, searching for the one app and closing a certain web browser. He finds it easily, and the app launches. Two fingers glide over the mousepad once again, scrolling down and eyes skimming for something mindless, something that could easily take his mind off of the events of the day but not too mentally challenging. His eyes hit “Keep Watching” and he stops, looking into the subheading.
Finally, he feels okay enough to reply to the text.
Jeremy: I don’t even know, I got a fraction for the related rates thing. Didn’t she say that we were going to get a nicely worked out problem?
He sends the text before locking his phone and putting it on “Do Not Disturb” so that he couldn’t be distracted by the outside world for a little bit. His eyes go back to the Keep Watching subheading and the content in it when he freezes. Right there, in plain print, easy text, is the piece of media you and Jeremy had watched together all those months ago.
Fuck, he remembers that night instantly, his mind rewinding to you with that bright orange cup, head against his chest, eyes fluttered shut, calmness finally flowing in and out of you. It was the most relaxed he’d ever seen you. He knew that it probably wasn’t a wonderful slumber, given your entire situation that affected your entire life to the point that you couldn’t even keep it together, strong as you were. He can remember the way his stars glowed, the way his sweater draped around you and somewhat onto him. He can remember the way you’d shifted right before he’d fallen asleep, almost snuggling into him more than before, hands calmly gripping his body, reaching out for him like he was the only thing in the world that mattered to you.
With a shake of his head, Jeremy is brought back. It’s 3:43 on a Thursday, months after the event, you’re probably hundreds of miles away. His heart hurts inside of his chest, bad enough that he feels like with to sharp of an exhale, it would come tumbling from his lips. He has no idea what happened with you. He has no idea if you’re okay, no idea if you’d managed to get free, managed to get rid of the stupid, what his British Literature professor called, Separate Sphere ideology, the Angel of the Household falling into freedom. His brain replays the moments in the gazebo, the leaves clapping with gusto as the breeze passes through, the way you smiled at him, moments where he was able to actually help you instead of just guessing and praying that things were okay. The way you told him that you got lost in time when talking to him. The way your lips curled into a smile, the genuine laugh, the looks of desperation almost peering into freedom. They were things he couldn’t forget, things that stuck on his mind for hours at a time.
At least this was only a basic remembering, no sensory details completely throwing him for a loop, causing his stomach to work in tandem with his mind. Seeing you in social media posts made the memories worse, they stung with each second they passed through his mind as his limbs would tingle, hands shaking and gripping, waiting for the memories to pass. As much as he wanted to admit that he was okay with not knowing about you, letting you go, he wasn’t. Deep down, it was apparent to everyone. He would lie awake, toss and turn, dream about the good, the bad, and what he assumed happened to you. Of course, it was always the worst in his nightmares, something he didn’t wish to dwell on while the sun was up, and the best in his daydreams. You hadn’t posted about your boyfriend recently, but you didn’t really before either, especially after you’d started even talking to him, even less since the incident—which is what he called that one night in passing with others. The only people who really knew the details about the incident were his dad, Michael’s moms, and Michael himself. Everything was under lock and key—both you and the issues you had—he was really the only one who knew exactly how you were feeling, the things you had been, or maybe still were, going through. He can remember Michael’s surprise when he first told him about you, about your situation, about your strength, about your new life, how much you’d changed. From happy to struggling to understand what was reality and what was something that was gaslit and given to you on a counterfeit silver platter.
And you’d gone silent lately. You were almost completely off the grid, to him at least. It was painful, every breath sitting inside of him, heavier than any gravitational pull in the universe. His heart, his mind, couldn’t help but fill in the blanks. Had you died? Had you done something too rebellious and ended up worse than the last time he saw you? Did you need help to live? Did you need help to even survive?
He can remember the way your hand brushed against his, the way your breath evened in hugs, that very first night, the way his hands glided across your back and helped you clean up. He can remember how your hand felt in his, your head against him, soft calmness seeping from you and into him. He can remember you leaning against him and his entire body lit aflame as he helped you up and down the stairs of the gazebo, the way your smile felt against his lips—clumsy kisses that had managed to turn into something absolutely beautiful and worth craving nearly daily. He can remember that smile that was etched into your shining face as the sunlight created an aura around you, leaves fluttering in the background. Jeremy remembers your hand slipping from his, a final farewell, or something similar leaving your lips. He remembers watching you walk away—why didn’t he watch longer?
Jeremy reaches his hand out, shaking as he tries to move the cursor away from the piece of media. He stops. Sharply, quickly, he shuts his laptop and casts it aside. Rolling over, the tears that had been forming in his eyes now spill down his cheeks. He can feel his legs contracting, toes curling so hard that his muscles begin to hurt, hands gripping the blanket. You were okay. You had to be okay.
Right?

1. What is something vexing that you're currently wrestling with?
My first (of many) MIT dilemmas
Ah yes. MIT. The place that provides students SO MANY things to do (not just plain or boring things, things I love!). The ~things~ I’m referring to are all of the majors, minors, activities, clubs, seminars, learning communities... You get the point. Though I am still a smol, not-yet-exposed-to-the-real-MIT prefrosh, I get the sense that it’s hard not to want to do everything. MIT is amazing in that it does a phenomenal job of picking diverse, passionate, motivated students; these students avidly seek out challenges and, from what I’ve seen amongst my prefrosh kin™, are ready to do literally everything at MIT.
But of course, that’s not possible. Although many wish they could quadruple major, time limitations exist, other obligations exist, you need SLEEP, and thus it’s likely not going to happen. I recently encountered one of my first dilemmas with regards to MIT (let’s just acknowledge that I’m not even there yet!) so buckle up!
Although I think I know what I plan on majoring in (course 20?!), deciding on my HASS concentration (preemptive, of course, as I am currently attempting to plan my academic journey here at MIT on FireRoad) has proven to be a challenge.
Obviously, I love math and science; but my academic interests also include non-STEM subjects like literally anything art history (actually history in general…) and Mandarin Chinese. I had the chance to explore these two subjects in high school-- taking an AP Art History course junior year (and consequently falling in love) and Mandarin Chinese sophomore through senior year. I knew I needed to continue these in college, as they really added a must-needed balance to my years in high school.
I vividly remember basically being in <3 love <3 when I saw the art pieces printed in my AP booklet during the test, mostly because the print quality was so nice! I was definitely not expecting to spend time ogling over some art pieces I studied all year during the most important test for the class, but there I was. I am still so incredibly fascinated by art history; I love learning why an artist decided to create their pieces, why the pieces were important during the time period, and omg how pretty!
I also discovered the wonder that is learning a new language! Most students took a required foreign language during their time in high school, as did I, but I never expected to thoroughly enjoy Mandarin so much. Although I never had exposure to the language growing up (as judging from my appearance, I am most definitely caucasian and our family only speaks English. but fun fact I’m ¼ Japanese!), I definitely had a great time learning about the intricate language and culture. And at this point, I virtually only speak at the elementary-level, so there is still so much 中文 (Chinese) to learn!
So this is my first MIT dilemma-- do I want to do my HASS Concentration in the History of Architecture, Art and Design, or in Chinese Studies? Learn cool history things, or (hopefully) become bilingual? ahhhh!!!
After a lot of thinking, planning, playing around with FireRoad, I think I’ve come to the decision of choosing the art history route. I am most definitely not dead-set on it, but just to give myself some peace of mind. It came down to which one I really enjoy studying! While I love learning Mandarin, my passion for art history ultimately prevailed. But stay tuned for any changes!

2. What happened Tuesday?
Solace in the Summertime My First Tuesday of July!
For many people, it’s usually a rarity to see the sunrise every morning (and in a perfect world, I’d be “many people”). I’m unfortunately woken up each morning by my 5:40am alarm-- I mean, I love my daily routine, but I just wish my day started a bit later. After getting everything situated, aka my breakfast, clothes, backpack, and bike loaded into the car (more on that later), I’m off to rowing practice!
Today's workout includes some hard pieces¹ on the erg², where I eventually totaled 16,000 meters rowed for the day. After stretching and foam-rolling, I did some strength training and wooo I’m done!
Just kidding! I brought my bike to ride today (thanks to mom for dropping me off this morning :D ) because the weather is wonderful in Southern California and I love the scenic route home. So, I embark on the 40 minute-ish ride-- slightly longer because my legs are dead, and hills are no joke-- and think about what I’m going to do for the rest of my day! With only 47 days (insert surprised Pikachu) until I leave for MIT, my time left to spend at home is quite limited. So many things to do!
It’s only 10:52 in the morning, but I’m hungry so I snack on some blueberries. I absolutely love blueberries!!! I wrote a sonnet on my love for blueberries once (my teacher told us to be creative, it’s just what came to mind!), so clearly, the love is real. So sweet! So pigmented!
After my blueberry escapade, I decided to read a bit. I didn’t have much time throughout the school year to read for leisure, so I’m just cherishing the time now! I just started the “A Song of Ice and Fire” series by George R.R. Martin (aka Game of Thrones in book form before it became a TV show). After reading for a while, I eat lunch, chill a bit, and write in my new planner that I got as one of my graduation gifts.
A few hours later, it’s dinner time! I make a delicious salad for dinner (I make one literally every night ~ friendly reminder to get your veggies in!) and get prepare for a meeting I have in the evening. The meeting is for a nonprofit I help run, called STEMChats, and we’re having our weekly leadership team call that will last a few hours (it’s a busy time for us!).
Sparing some minor events that occurred through the day, this is what I did on my first Tuesday in July! The day was pretty uneventful for me, mostly because I’ve done a similar routine most days of my summer so far. But I hope you enjoyed Tatum’s Tuesday!
A “piece” is basically rowing lingo for the workout. Most are either by time or distance (meters).
We <3 erging! Ergs are the indoor rowing machines used for on-land workouts and such (most rowers don’t actually like them because hard workouts = pain).

3. What is your current obsession?
Jeopardy! Joy An Evening Tradition
If you ask me to hang out any given day between 7pm to 7:30pm, chances are I’ll say no. I’ve been watching the fast-paced classic trivia show Jeopardy! for over 11 years with the company of my mom. Though I didn’t get many answers right in my early years, I now get enough correct clues each night to tally ‘em up (sorry for the unintentional flex). So, when I hear the ever-so-memorable theme song each night when the clock strikes 7, I instantly grab my small chalkboard, chalk, and a nice glass of water because it’s time for some Jeopardy!.
Now, I’m not sure you’d call it an obsession. For me, it’s a hobby. Surprising yourself by remembering very niche details on events, names, and just utterly random topics? Count me in! Now I know at MIT we had (have? idk?) a ~celebrity~ in our midst: Lily Chin, Jeopardy! College Champion. I remember watching the tournament a few years back, greatly looking up to the contestants who just knew so much! I never ever thought that I’d be going to the same institution, let alone writing this blog. Maybe one day I’ll be on Jeopardy! (currently waiting for the next college student try-out!!!) and I’ll fulfill my life-long dream! Or maybe I won’t! But I’ll still continue to watch the show and reminisce on all the great memories watching it with family (but show no remorse for all the missed opportunities for hangouts with friends. sorry y’all <3) (let’s play a game called “how many times can you mention ‘Jeopardy!’ in one blog post”!)

Super Mom and Super Dad
This picture shows me at the doctor’s office at 8:00am with both kids when they both had croup and we were all up all night.
Our family is definitely surfing through some stormy seas right now, and I thought I’d make a post that has some skeletal sketches about that shit, but mostly focuses on some great parenting moments in our family recently. Because sometimes I am proud of my skills in this arena.
Recently we saw some old friends, Wil and Mira, who were in town for a conference after leaving their young kids with the grandparents for a week. Mira told me that the morning they were supposed to leave they had no hot water, and when she went to investigate the basement she found the sewer overflowing into the shower. With hours before their flight a septic company came out and put a camera in the pipes, found the problem and solved it, and then they rushed to the airport. At the end of her harrowing tale the moral of her story was “Life is good! We’re so lucky that happened before we left, it could have happened while we were away”. I was just thinking how if that story had happened to me I might have thought “how awful” and Mira’s takeaway was “how wonderful”. I’m endeavoring to be like Mira right now and have a positive outlook.
One of the big things we have going on is a whole house remodel at one of the apartments. We’re acting as general contractor and we are really stumbling through this. We met a window salesman who pressured us to buy windows we didn’t need, pay in cash, and bribe the city inspectors (we didn’t hire him). We found out that ikea cabinets are twice the cost of custom. And our flooring guy didn’t vent the floor stain, and the fumes caused the neighbors to call poison control when their faces broke out in rashes.
Managing the remodel has meant that a few times a week Alex has an early morning where he has to be in the city by 8:00am to meet with someone and I’m finding some new Super Mom tricks for the morning routine. One thing is that I make a line drawing for the kids to color in and this occupies them peacefully while I’m getting dressed. I’ve offered that they could each have their own, but they prefer to share.
I’ve also got them doing a lot more of the work themselves. Often Hazel measures the oatmeal and water into the pot, Oliver washes the berries and serves them, I make the coffee, they each pack their lunches into their backpacks with a water bottle, etc.
I try to put a little drawing in Hazel’s lunch each day. Usually her bedtime lullaby is a made up song and one night she asked for a song about a mama and baby owl and I made this drawing for her lunch. She likes to color in the drawings at school.
Alex is really rising to the challenge of juggling his start-up and the remodel. He’s also taught Hazel to ride a bike, which she loves and that’s a great source of joy for us all. He’s really the best with teaching kids things like this, so gentle and supportive without positive or negative pressure.
We also have school closures so I’ve been bringing the kids to work with me (and Alex has them at home at his work) as we try to piece together childcare and work. It can be a total delight to have them with me during the day, like Hazel here at my desk, and it can be hard like Oliver standing at my elbow saying “when will you be done?” over and over for three hours.
We’ve been trying to bring more academic practice into our lives. This is me volunteering at Oliver school for the read-athon day where kids wear pajamas, snuggle in sleeping bags, and spend the whole day reading. I also chaperoned a field trip to see the “overwintering” ladybugs. That was amazing.
Oliver’s class is learning reading, writing and some math and number skills. With two parents that work full time we don’t have a lot of evening time to encourage him to practice these skills. However, I’ve stumbled upon some ways to make the learning into a “game” and Oliver really loves that.
When his class was practicing numbers that add up to ten, we made up a card game that’s a twist on “crazy 8s” but it’s “crazy 10s”. 10′s are wild AND any pair of cards that makes 10 can be used as a wild. Oliver kept score on a piece of paper, easily adding up the points from each hand as we went.
I put some common alphabet letters on a set of old playing cards and we played a game were we each get five cards and have to make as many words as we can. Oliver was allowed to make himself a “cheat sheet” where we wrote down words he already knew, and he was chuckling the whole time about how sneaky he was cheating in this way.
This picture shows a letter Oliver wrote to his teacher asking for some details about “friendsgiving”. As you can see, he’s learning to confidently “find his voice as an author” before anyone corrects his spelling. This says “How many kids are in class?” “What time?” “Who can come?” “Can I bring meat?”
One morning when we were talking about odd and even numbers I showed Oliver how even numbers are smooth across the top when you stack boxes, and odds have a jagged top. Oliver made the number chart on the right and Hazel made this one on the left and then she asked to make it again two more times, carefully writing the numbers each time. We looked at how odd numbers can hook up like puzzle pieces to make an even number, and how pairs of ten can be found by starting from the outside and stepping in.
Oliver thought of this as another “cheat sheet” that he could look at when he wants to remember which numbers are odd and even. He remarked that he couldn’t bring it to school because he would get in trouble for cheating.
We also made up this game (below). We make a two letter suffix like “at” “am” or “an” and then I write down the whole alphabet and we add the suffix to each word in the alphabet. Oliver sounds out the word and we laugh at the silly non-words and cheer for the real words. Alex and I did a competition to see if “am” or “an” suffix would have a higher score. Oliver sounded out the words and awarded points to either me or Alex depending on whether it was a real word. We tied.
And I’ve made two sets of “sight word bingo” cards to practice the words that Oliver is supposed to know just by sight. We started with about 15 simple words such as on, it, no. And then we moved on to about 40 words. All four of us play sometimes after dinner, and we have ways to make it a bit easier for Hazel.
I’ve been really proud of Oliver playing this intro to programming board game, which was a gift from Amma. Within the game you can create a function and then use your function in a program (a program is a series of cards that moves your piece). It’s pretty exciting to see him think about sequences that will repeat and extract that into a function.
This is a drawing to explain constipation to a four year old.
These are some great artworks my kids made:
Oliver made these faces.
Hazel made this unicorn.
Oliver made this portrait of Harry Potter.
Hazel has been turning our kitchen into her art gallery. I’ve made a big calendar on the fridge so the kids can get a sense of what’s coming up in the weeks ahead.
I also spent a day doing volunteer work at this food shelter. We set out this free grocery store and then handed out produce, rice and other staples to people experiencing food insecurity. No one wanted pears. People took as much spinach as we would let them.
I’ve been hiking a lot. Sometimes by myself, sometimes with Oliver, sometimes with the whole family.
We did a family hike. I carried Hazel part of the way.
That’s me on a swing that goes out over a drop off. Pretty fun.
I went East for the funeral of my Aunt, my mom’s sister. This image shows my uncle saying a prayer at the grave side.

Beginning the long journey... (Year 0, Day 1 [sorta])
As I begin down this long and arduous path, I figured why not catalog all of my progress (and failures) in a blog for the world to see!
All memes aside, I should probably begin with an
INTRODUCTION:
I’m Manuel; my friends call me Manny. I’m a recent graduate from a bachelor of music (B.Mus) program in southern California where I was fortunate enough to meet some great friends, mentors, and professionals who helped guide and inspire me to create some awesome aural artwork. I’ve loved music for as long as I could remember, and it was always something that drove me to be my best. I’ve aspired to play many instruments from a young age and always sought perfection trying to master their intricacies. I studied both composition and saxophone performance in college, while frequently freelancing as an audio engineer (my current line of work).
But wait, isn’t this a game development blog?: Yes, yes it is.
Due to a variety of circumstances and personal interests, I’ve decided to jump ship from one extremely difficult creative field (concert/classical/experimental music) to another (game development), leaving behind a life I feel indebted to and, honestly, still love very much. I’ve been thinking of making this jump for quite some time (a year or so), with a long, loooooong history of engaging with the video game medium on a deeply-infatuated level, which ultimately backs up this decision. Throughout my life, video games always played a pivotal role in my own forms of expression, happiness, leisure, and community. From my very first Gameboy Color to the now flourishing Nintendo Switch, from Pokemon to Monster Hunter to Bioshock and more, I’ve been hooked. Honestly, I’ve always considered these worlds my second, third, fourth, and n-th homes. Because of this, I’ve felt like I have a duty to give back to the community however I can. After five years of collegiate study and ridding the struggle bus, I realize that there’s no better time than the present to chase this dream. THE NOW, or WHERE TO START:
In firmly deciding on this change, I didn’t necessarily know where to begin. Hell, I didn’t even really know what careers or roles existed in the game development community. After finding scouring the internet and finding some helpful resources, I was blown away at the sheer amount of readjusting I’d need to do to even think about entering this field.
For example, this messy bundle of terms flooded my brain while trying to get a grasp of the industry:
Senior-level

Technical Director
Junior-level

And this list over-simplifies the complex web these roles create with each other. That being said, the last month or so has consisted of me scouring the internet for resources, deciding on what my long-term and short-term goals are, and orienting myself towards taking on Goliath.
MOVING FORWARD:
After being bombarded with this information, I decided that the best course of action for moi was to shoot for a game engineering/programming role, as I also had a brief two-year stint in astrophysics research and STEM coursework during my undergraduate degree. Another one of my passions, the STEM fields have always held a dear place in my heart and I picked up a lot of programming skills/languages in college, notably Java & Python. Intensive music study has also done wonders for the technically-oriented work I currently do, so I figured it would be fun to challenge myself with STEM-oriented work once again. So far, I hold a great, great admiration for lead game designers like Hideo Kojima and others, so design is also something I’m looking into. RESOURCES:
In doing my research, I’ve found a variety of extremely helpful resources that provided me with the insight to start this journey. I’ll post the most helpful ones below: GameDevUnchained (Podcast/Website):
This podcast, hosted by Brandon Pham & Larry Charles (both established AAA game developers), explores the current state of affairs in the video game industry. Their conversations are filled with wit, charm, and tons of information, from wage negotiation and employment to indie development and technical direction. No topic is missed* (well, except for the exact technical aspects of being an artist, developer, or programmer). Despite this slight oversight, it’s still worth its weight in gold due to the fact that they bring in a new guest every week who touches on a specific topic. I’ve gained most of my working knowledge about the industry’s complexities from this source. [Currently on episode: 26] Game School Online (GSO):
This revolutionary piece of pedagogy is an online game development school that is ENTIRELY FREE. Founded and ran by the hosts of GameDevUnchained, GSO’s main focus is free game development education with a focus on artwork, modeling, and technical artistry done through the Unreal 4 engine. The school is optionally supported through Patreon and provides special benefits to subscribers; however, a subscription isn’t necessary to enroll. Enrollment periods happen 4 times a year, with heavy waitlists for non-subscribers due to the need to keep class numbers down. Their educators consist of “Scholars” who teach and monitor the courses, all of whom are active AAA/Indie developers. Notable Scholars include Brandon Pham, Larry Charles, Leo Gonzales, Olaf Piesche (my mentor!), Matt Brown, Tai Chen, and many others. For subscribers, there’s the option to interact 1-on-1 with scholars, serving as lessons and mentorships to poise the budding student to enter the field. I’m currently a $40/month subscriber, which gets me a 30-minute session every month with Olaf. I’d like to stress, however, that at its current state GSO seems heavily oriented towards artists, with the art-oriented roles overshadowing the engineer/programmer roles 8-to-2. In addition, all classes are oriented towards art or design. This means Olaf & Matt are only doing 1-on-1 sessions. -_- *Oh well, better than nothing.*
The next two are both variations on the paid-online-schooling trope, but they seem alright nonetheless...
Coursera:
Coursera is a platform that hosts specialized “certification” courses that were designed by universities around the world. These certification courses are essentially a compilation of videos, assignments, and online templates that are moderated by online staff (and presumably not monitored by the actual course instructors ever). Each certification consists of about 4-6 classes and takes anywhere from 6 months to a year to complete. Each class runs an average of 1-2 months and has about 1 assignment due every week. There is a peer-grading system which can be iffy at times, but it’s worked out well for me so far. The only downside is that these courses can be EXPENSIVE; however, there are financial aid options for those of us *ahemmeahem* that can’t afford the costs. Luckily, my cost for the first class was waived completely. I’m currently enrolled in the Game Design certification course created by Cal Arts. I’ll be updating you all on my progress every week as I work through this course. Something odd I’ve noticed is that the videos for the Intro to Game Design course are astoundingly short; I’m surprised this course costs anything at all given the kind of information I’ve received out of it so far.
Udemy:
Like its quasi-academic counterpart, Udemy hosts courses created by content creators (I’m not too sure on the qualifications these creators have...) that consists primarily of video tutorials. The beautiful thing about Udemy is that, unlike Coursera, their courses often times cost very little if you go through the right channels! This means promo codes from websites like IGN or your favorite tech reviewer, etc etc. I was fortunate enough to grab the Unreal Crash Course course for $10 through an IGN promotion last month. Also unlike Coursera, there are no assignments or grading systems in place for your work. Instead, there are often forums that host dozens and dozens of posts from current and past students of the course. This feature has felt surprisingly fresh and fun; however, not receiving a lot of direct feedback has its downsides. I’ve been slowly chugging away at this course, having finished 1/4th of it so far. I’ve also found that there tends to be much more technical work to be learned from Udemy as opposed to Coursera (in terms of game development); however, this may just be my limited scope, as I haven’t looked around too much more.
Game Engine Architecture, Third Edition by Jason Gregory
(Naughty Dog Lead Programmer):
This book is AMAZING for the aspiring game engineer, as it’s filled to the brim with a detailed analysis of common game engine architecture as told by the lead programmer at Naughty Dog (go Uncharted/Last of Us teams!!!!). I’m currently in the second chapter of the book, but to give a brief overview of its entirety along with my own descriptions below each heading:
Introduction
“discusses the ins and outs of the industry
Tools of the Trade
“an in-depth look into programming tools”
Fundamentals of Software Engineering for Games
“development cycles and tool usage”
Parallelism and Concurrent Programming
“the title says it all”
3D Math for Games
“3D geometry and Linear Algebra, along with programming algorithms” (go STEM!)
Engine Support Systems
“a look at memory and systems”
Resources and the File System
“how to handle game assets”
The Game Loop and Real-Time Simulation
“graphics rendering loops and gameplay loops, along with dealing with time”
Human Interface Devices
“dealing with I/O”
Tools for Debugging and Development
“the title says it all”
The Rendering Engine
“rasterization and rending pipelines”
Animation Systems
“skeletal meshes and processing”
Collision and Rigid Body Dynamics
“physics systems and other collision systems” (go STEM!)
Audio
“Dealing with sound design and 3D audio” (go music!)
Introduction to Gameplay Systems
“dealing with data, game objects, and world editors”
Runtime Gameplay Foundation Systems
“dealing with all of the constituent parts and updating the game”
You mean there’s more?
“more to be learned”
As you can tell, there’s a whole lot of information to be gained by reading a textbook like this. Jason states in the Foreword that this is really meant to be used to teach a three-class series on game programming at the university level; however, I find that you’ll be able to understand a lot of this pretty well so long as you have an ample amount of programming experience (preferably with C++). That being said, it’s a perfect springboard for me and I’m so eager to continue that I sort of want to finish writing this entry already so I can get back to it! *o* It cost about $85 for a physical copy and $47 for a digital copy (Kindle).
So, that wraps up my currently used resources list! I hope it can serve as a starting point for some of your own deep-dives into the world-wide-web for resources! CONCLUSION: Thanks for sticking with me this far everyone. I know I didn’t dive into my past that much, but I hope it gives you somewhat of an idea as to who I am. In starting this journey, I’ve realized the importance of documentation and reaching out to build a community with others, so I hope that we can all interact and take this journey together, in some form. Tomorrow I’ll be delving into my current projects that I’m aiming to work on and some of my personal inspiration for taking the game development plunge, as well as discuss what I’m currently working on in terms of study/development. I hope you all have a good day, and never feel like it’s too late to start chasing your dreams again! - Manny Extra: Game of the Day - Disgaea 1 Complete on Nintendo Switch I’ve loved this game since I first played it way back in the early 2000s, so when I heard this was coming to Switch as a slightly remastered port, I couldn’t wait! The updated artwork looks great and I’m eager to get all of those extra scenarios completed! ;) GO SRPGs!

Chantal Sanchez, MTS ’22
“I'm from Southern California. My first time actually leaving California was to come all the way to Boston for my undergrad at Boston College. I studied physics there during my first year, until luckily, being at a Catholic school, I was forced to take theology and philosophy. That's how I fell in love with theology.”
Chantal Sanchez, MTS ’22, is a second-year MTS student studying South Asian religions and is a member of the Harvard Buddhist Community's Buddhism and Race speaker series planning committee.
From Academic Decathlon to Lifelong Passion
During my senior year of high school, I quit the softball team and joined something called “academic decathlon,” which was basically like a nerd competition. It was all the seven subjects – econ, science, math, social science, literature, music, art – and then speech, interview, and an essay. Every year, the competition focuses on a specific subject. The year I joined, it was all about India. So I learned an obscene amount about India.
At the end of that year, I graduated and started at Boston College as a physics major. We had a few key requirements, including theology and cultural diversity. When I saw there was a Hinduism class that counted for cultural diversity, I was like, cool – I just learned all about India. So I took that class, along with another in comparative Islam and Christianity. Starting with those classes, I fell in love with the study of theology. In my Hinduism class, in particular, I realized I enjoy the work. I had developed a relationship with the professor, and I was loving what we were learning. By my sophomore year, I had switched my major from physics to theology.
Fast forward to the end of sophomore year, as I was preparing to study abroad in France. I heard from my Hinduism professor that there was a study abroad in Nepal that I didn't know about. I changed my plans, and I ended up doing a language program for three weeks in India before flying to Kathmandu, Nepal, for four months of study abroad.
For the academic decathlon in high school, I had learned Indian history from the beginning of time all the way up to the current day. I remember seeing a picture of the wind palace, Hawa Mahal, when I was studying during my senior year of high school. On study abroad, I actually got to see it in real life, in Jaipur. I had learned so much from books, so much about India’s historical background, deities, and iconography. Before going there, I knew that book religion is very different than place practice, as it always is. But seeing the doctrines and beliefs I had learned about in real life was transformative.
My studies abroad solidified things for me: I would specialize in South Asian religions. Today, that's what I'm doing at HDS.
Curiosity and Faith
I grew up in a secular household. My mom was 17 when she had me, so she was a child herself. She didn’t know what religion was, and she didn't really want to force anything on us. We actually shopped around different religions, like Latter Day Saints, Jehovah's Witness, a myriad of random Christian churches in So-Cal. A lot of them were hippie types of places – just music the whole time. I think we even went to a temple. When I was 12 she told me and my sister, you guys figure it out. I'm not going to tell you what to believe.
For a while, I was just kind of neutral to religion. I felt like I respected human beings, regardless of their beliefs. But I was still curious about faith. I always wondered, what is it about people that makes them believe? I always thought about it, especially the way religion connects so many people in the world.
During my study abroad in college, I often went to the Shiva temple with my host family in Nepal. There was one random Sunday when I was on my way to meet up with some friends from school, and I had an intense need to go to the Shiva temple on my own. I thought, OK, I already know the routine: I circumambulate this tree, touch this, do this. So I did it, on my own. Stopping at the temple became part of my routine for walking to school every day.
There was another moment when I was studying at the Buddhist monastery in Nepal, where there were practicing monks of all ages. One of my teachers was actually a Buddhist monk, who taught us, verse by verse, one of their founding texts, just as if we were monks in the monastery as well. I remember once, my friend and I went down to daily puja, which means worship. This worship involved a lot of sounds. They blow horns, there's a drum, and sometimes they chant. We were sitting and meditating in this cacophony of noises, which might surprise some people who don't think that's how you practice, especially meditation-wise. But it was in that moment of being drowned by all these sounds that I found clarity. I realized this is for me.
After being at a monastery and having these experiences, I've recently fully identified as Buddhist. I have my own Buddhist shrine altar. I’m on an interesting journey.
Coming to HDS
As a first-gen college student, I didn't know anything about college. I didn't even know Boston College was Jesuit until I got there, which is ridiculous. I had a theology professor during my freshman year who really helped me figure out that college is meant to explore what you think, not just to get a job. The job will come later, she told me, as long as you find your interests.
This professor, along with my Hinduism professor and another theology professor, helped lay the stepping stones for me. That path ultimately led me to grad school.
As I geared up for grad school applications, I was looking for schools that would support my specific studies. But I also loved the Jesuit values of Boston College, which is very much whole-person oriented. That was something I had in mind as well, that I wanted an environment that would develop me as a person.
I did Diversity and Explorations in 2019, which allowed me to meet some professors and see Harvard Divinity School. Ultimately, this visit, along with my wish to specialize and have interactions with a myriad of different religions and different people, is really what solidified my decision to come to HDS.
Exploring Interests in New Ways
For my senior thesis at BC, I focused on how the participation of women in politics has grown through Hindu nationalism, which is an interesting paradox. When you look at a fundamentalist right-wing type of organization, it usually hearkens back to traditional values. The traditional values of womanhood are to stay in the home. But now you have these women who are fierce proponents of Hindu nationalist politics who are in leadership positions. It's an interesting thing to see. I explored that during my senior thesis, and I’ve explored that more at HDS. In particular, I took a religious nationalism class this past year that gave me a breadth of understanding of religious nationalism, historically and all over the world. It really put my thesis into perspective.
I think one of my favorite classes I took this past year was called Writing South Asia. It was like an everyday English literature class, but focused on South Asian writers. I got to read poetry anthologies, novels, and plays from critical South Asian authors. It was like a breath of fresh air, honestly. Outside of academics, I always read fiction. I appreciated the chance to read genres that I read on my own time in an academic context, as well as the opportunity to gain a different perspective on my studies within South Asia (in particular, a perspective from South Asian voices, rather than from academic texts written by old white men).
Another favorite this past semester was my “Introduction to Buddhist Commentaries” class with Charles Hallisey. We read an entire commentary a week, which is a lot of reading and a lot to process. But the class really helped me understand how to look at what scripture is. We asked, what is text versus scripture? What is the meaning versus my meaning? Can we even use the word scripture in terms of Eastern religions? That class really was a mind-blow.
Remote Learning, Real Challenges
I initially thought I would apply for a Fulbright to continue my undergraduate thesis research after graduation. But unfortunately, I don't know anymore. A lot of that is because of the past year of Zoom University was unkind to me. I was very depressed all this past year because of school online.
I've always been a very driven person, and school has been my life. As a first-gen college student, since I was born, that's what my whole family told me to do. Your only job was to go to college. To not know what I want any more has been a little bit rough. I'm a little lost, and I hope that going back in person, making some connections, and talking with people will help me get back on track.
But among not having a great time this whole past year, a highlight was my Hindi Professor Richard Delacy. We had Hindi class four days a week. It was the most fun, engaging online class ever.
I also enjoyed being a part of the Harvard Buddhist Community's Buddhism and Race speaker series planning committee. We helped organize an eight-month long speaker series, which we’ve been planning since September of last year. All first semester we planned, contacted speakers, and figured out the funding. Since January of this year, we’ve “hosted” one speaker a month to explore different topics relating to the large umbrella of what ‘Buddhism and Race’ entails. A focus has been how we can look at our own practice of Buddhism and the Dharma and apply that to the issue of our time: race and racism.
Looking Forward
I’m really looking forward to being able to meet people and make friends! I didn’t make many because of Zoom and I can’t wait to diversify. I am also really excited to just be a part of the greater Harvard community. In undergrad, I was always going to random events here and there if I had a spare hour and I hope to be able to do the same now. And of course, I am particularly pumped to be continuing my work with HBC’s Buddhism and Race committee as we gear up to plan a dynamic in-person event in spring of 2022!

Top Data Science Courses Online
As a result, most organizations are keen to pay excessive salaries for professionals with appropriate Data Science abilities.
Thank you digital Nest for a support you could have offered. Excellent course, I discovered Intellipaat's teaching team to be talented in their respective area.
In throughout my training i received full help and assist from grass school in addition to best environment where I can groom myself. I have efficiently accomplished my training and my certification with good information.
You might not find yourself with a level from one of many world's most prestigious universities, but the course is detailed and technical sufficient to make an skilled of you by the end. The course is part of a data science degree and constructed for college kids who've prior knowledge of, or are also studying, core fields such as programming, maths, and statistics. However, there are sufficient free assets out there on these subjects to make this a viable possibility for those exterior of academia, if you are devoted sufficient. These videos were recorded whereas taking the class. We kept in mind that scholar should really feel the classroom environment while coaching. All the videos are accessible out of your desktop, mobile, tablet, Etc.We request you to take a path session.
My learning was superb as it helped me in upgrading my abilities, which proved to be a turning point in my career. Intellipaat's mentor was nicely-skilled and his educating methodology was actually nice. This, probably the greatest Data Science programs helped me to get deep understanding of the expertise.
Where the training fashion of trainer are completely totally different presentation, rationalization, and a relation between a trainer and student are perfect.
