Episode 1:

Okay… I’m only a few minutes in, but there is already a strong lack off some of the expositions that was helpful in the og. No establishing shots, show how much disrepair the houses is in, nor is there any scenes of house hunting from Sam and Jay (this version of Allison and Mike), which was helpful for the part of why, in the og, Allison and Mike were so willing to move in.

Also, no suspense on the fact that Sam was getting the house, I know it’s kinda a given but still the convo between the lawyer/solicitor felt serious clunky cause of it.

Gonna be honest, these quips are really 50/50 rn, tbh maybe a worse ratio.

It’s also weird that they instantly jumped to running a b&b instead of like the og (which had a more logical progression of the ghosts growing on Allison, influencing the start of the b&b, plus the failure of selling the house to the one lady in one ep).

Also, I feel there’s a lack of conflict with sam and jay needing to take out a loan feels weird.

Oh god, the intro is not fun and goofy D’:.

They tried the stereotypical headless ghosts, but idk how the hell that is gonna work in the context of the ghosts being a greaser

BBC Ghosts vs CBS Ghosts

So I just saw a post mentioning the fact that there was an American version of the BBC’s Ghosts (thank you @m1auu for mentioning it in your tags under one post) and as someone looking for any good reason to procrastinate sleeping and school work I decided I’d watch it (at least the first season). I have always loved comparing remakes of show, especially in the case of British shows being turned into American television, especially due to the poor track record. As for why I decided to post about this in the first place, one part me loving the original Ghosts, second part me looking to goof around, third part my love for history (and I genuinely enjoyed how they played with it in the BBC Ghosts so I hope the CBS’s version will try to make similar efforts).

(Also, I’m not sure if this will be at all important for my analysis, but I am a yankee doodle doo)

Before Watching:

I think before even start watching, I have a few a issues I think I can predict before I actually start digging into the show. Firstly, I want to start off with my biggest worry which I hope won’t, but probably will exist, which is that the problem, that almost every American remake I have I watched has seems to have, which is the translation of thematic ideas. I think this problem happens almost every time, where an American remake takes a British IP and makes it either to optimistic or high energy, for example; the inbetweeners or the office (uk) to the office (us). This especially bothers me because a lot of British humor focuses on satire, especially on class issues, which American comedies avoid (despite it being an extremely prominent issue in the States) and a lot American comedies will also often lack subtlety as well (something I really valued form Ghosts (BBC)). Now this could all turn out to be nothing, but even before seeing anything I don’t have to positive of an outlook.

My second issue is something that’ll probably be apparent to anyone who knows about the US history and British history. The cast, while Britain has centuries of distinct historical periods that the average person could make the distinctions between, I believe that’ll be much harder in an American version due to America’s much shorter history (mostly disregarding the indigenous history as it is unlikely there will be more than one indigenous character), as well as the fact the a lot history is hard to have in one condensed area of the states, like a cowboy would not be caught dead in the same place as an 90s metro- politician. Also, when it comes to characters having equivalents, I think there will be an attempt, but I doubt there will be more than Pat, Julian, Kitty, Fanny and maybe Mary, if the setting happens to be placed in a Northeastern state. My other, thought based on a glance at the thumbnail image that comes up when you first look up the show, is that instead of the Captain being a WWII soldier, his equivalent will most likely be an American Revolutionary soldier (which I could see maybe working ….ehhh).

Look at the stumbling way he’s running, he’s gonna trip and fall to his bloody death before he even sees the man!” - okay i know i said no more quips but this is literally too funny i just wanted to read it again

“ However, for whatever reason, that vicious ghost, in its muddled state, took that large group of live mortals under its wing and fled for many days. In the end, they were still surrounded by millions of ghosts, trapped in a dead end, and it was going to be eaten along with those humans.” [...] “That vicious ghost almost made a move against those humans, but for some reason, in the end, it didn’t. It instead used one of its own eyes as the price to forge a blood weapon. That vicious ghost was already forcibly hanging on with its last breath; after digging out its eye it should’ve broken apart completely. Yet somehow something had shocked it, and it instead woke to its senses completely. “ - THIS IS AMAZING ARE YOU KIDDING ME???? IS THIS ALL WE GET ABOUT HIS GHOSTLY LORE?????? HUA CHENGGGGGGGG

“What a terrible offence, his old habit had come out, and he quickly apologized. “I’m sorry! You don’t have to listen to me!” Hua Cheng, however, only smiled happily. “Everything gege tells me is the best advice, so why wouldn’t I listen?” - this isnt the fucking time afjdkfjsdkl they really never stop

that was really fun i had a blast reading it and on the whole really liked it i WISH soo badly that hua cheng had gotten more outside of being cunty and devoted even tho those are both important i just wish there was more about like how he got by during those 800 years and like did he ever have doubts? what shaped his worldview was it all xie lian or was it his experience as a mortal as well? why is he so mean to e’ming? theres bits and pieces here and there and i know it was already SO long but that really would have been great if there was more about hc cuz tbh by the end, at least for me, the hualian relationship didnt actually feel as fleshed out as the xianle trio relationship like i still liked hualian’s dynamic and it was really sweet how much they clearly really liked each other and  everything but i kind of wish some of the other subplots had been dropped or diminished in favor of more hc development i think that would have been cool

but anyway thats some of my thoughts and i really did enjoy the hell out of book 5 that was a riot and uhhh thanks to everyone who read these or commented *lends you spiritual energy through a high five*

“Y/N you have to be my girlfriend this weekend!” Steve screams as he spots you seated in front of the library with a book in hand. You roll your eyes before closing the book. “Aren’t you already in a real relationship?”

“Yes but we aren’t in the ‘bring them home to meet the family’ stage yet and i’m honestly not sure we ever will be.”

“And why would I be doing this?”

“Because I’m your best friend and you love me and you don’t want to see a 24 year old 6’ foot tall man on his knees crying.” You did kind of wanna see a 6’ foot tall man on his knees crying that sounded amazing.

“What if I had plans?” The only plans you had for the weekend were to catch up on Netflix shows and stuff your face with as many pancakes as humanly possible, but that’s not the point and he didn’t need to know that.

“I’d say ‘But Y/N it’s a party and you can dress all fancy like I know you like plus it’s all on my parents dime and then, you’d pretend to think it over like you actually really do have plans that didn’t include way too much fast food, you’d agree, we’d hug and you’d go home and pack your bags already.” You give him the nastiest glare you can muster.

“Fine. I’ll go but only and I repeat only because I could use a break.”

You leave Steve to go and pack your bag for 2 days. You stuff it full of as many things as possible since and you aren’t taking an airplane there’s no boundaries when it comes to packing. So you take advantage of this and bring your laptop and 2 of your game consoles which Steve complained profusely about (‘Two entire consoles really?’ ‘what if I need to play Mortal Kombat and Zelda Steve?’) and way too many clothes for only 2 days.

“So what’s our story? How’d we meet how long have we been dating?” You’re on the road up to Steve’s parents. You have about 2 more hours before you make it there so you decide it’s time to make a plan.

“We meet in our human studies class. I asked you to be my study partner and you fell madly in love with me because of my strikingly good looks and rippling abs. We’ve been together for a few months.”

“I hate us already we sound like a walking cliche. And why couldn’t you fall madly in love with me?! My sparkling eyes and wonderful personality,not to mention my beautiful face?”

The rest of the car ride is spent talking about Steve’s actually girlfriend and how he isn’t sure if she’ll last or not.

The car fell into a comfortable silence after that. Both of in your own little worlds. Steve lost in the dullness of driving. You lost in thought about James and meeting Steve’s family.

“Steve, are you texting and driving? You’re just being so rebellious today.” You quip as the car cruises down the highway.

“It was only two texts and they were from my best friend. He’s having a major love life crisis and as best friend it is my sworn duty to help.”

“Your rebellious phase is over.”

When you finally arrive, you get out the car for a much needed stretch struggling with all of your bags as you coo over a the neighbors dog in the middle of the street. The door flies open the second Steve walks up to the porch. “Hello!“ a beautiful older woman yells as she rushes out of the door and over to Steve.

“How was the driver over?” She asks as a man that looks almost identical to Steve comes out to help with the bags.

“It was nice and quiet ma’.” He says finally pulling the last bag out of the car. You stand just out of the way of the small family reunion looking on at the exchange of hugs and kisses. But that is cut short when you’re pulled into a hug by Steve’s mom.

“It’s so lovely to finally meet you.” She was so tiny but she was squeezing you so tightly.

“It’s wonderful to meet you as well Mrs.Rogers.” 

“Ma’ please don’t embarrass me.” Steve said as he stood to one side of you watching as his ma’ squeezed the life out of you.

“Nonsense honey, I could never embarrass my big handsome man.” She had finally let go and you’d taken a huge breath of air.

“Ma! it’s like sometimes you don’t even hear the words coming out of your mouth.” 

“Watch your tongue Stevie. Oh you both should be hurrying inside to get cleaned up for dinner we gave a guest.” She said as she started to head inside the house.

“A guest?” Just meeting his parents was stressful enough and you two weren’t even dating.

“It’s probably just Bucky nobody special.” His dad said as he walked past the two of you.

“Bucky?” You asked more to Steve then to his parents.

“Stevie’s best friend.” His dad yells from the door way.

“The one that I was texting earlier.” Steve replies as he watches his dad disappear inside

“Oh love life guy.” You picked up as soon as his words started to die down.

“Is he cute?” You whisper to Steve when mom makes her way inside. Steve whips his head around at you think he might break his neck.

‘“What? Clearly I don’t know how to pick guys.” You say making your way inside the house as well.

When you and Steve had finally gotten showered and dressed for dinner, him insisting that you didn’t need to wear a dress and heels “But you promised Stevie!” “Stop calling me that! and i’ll settle for nice blouse and jeans!”, you were finally sitting at the dinner table with a plate full of homemade food. It looked delicious, you hadn’t had a good home cooked meal since you last visited your own home well over a year ago.

“We’re just waiting on our special guest and then we can dig in.” Mrs. Rogers announced

“I forgot the drinks, y/n can you help me?”

“Absolutely.” you stand up from your seat and give Steve a peck on the cheek for show and you can tell the instant you do it he hates it. You grab 5 glasses as his mom grabs the whine for the night. As you and his mom are making your way back in you here a shout assuming Bucky has arrived you make your way back.

Buck: I fucked up. Bad

Steve: How bad is bad?

Steve: Tell me when I get there I’m driving.

Buck: Really bad like I’ve ruined any and all chances I’ve had with this girl. You gotta help me out.

He doesn’t knock on the door he doesn’t need to this is his home away from home practically a son to the rogers himself. When he opens the door the living is bare and all he can do is look around at the familiar room. Remembering all the times he and Steve had played ball in the living room no matter how many times that had gotten yelled at by Mrs.Rogers.

“Buck.” Steve pulls him from his nostalgic thoughts holding his arms out wide.

“Steve.” Bucky can’t help but drag his longtime friend into a hug.

“Buck It’s been too long buddy.” It had been way too long and Bucky knows its neither of their faults but it still sucks.

“So tell me about this girl buck. I need all the details.”

“There are no details really I just got nervous and, shes perfect ya know? I just couldn’t believe she’d want to date me so I laughed and then…”

“I bet ma’ will have some good advice for you.” They’re making their back into the dining room the same time as you and Mrs. Rogers.

“Bucky its so nice to have you back.” Steves mom is smiling at him and all of his worries damn near melt away. He loved her like he loved his own mom.She was always there for him when he had troubles girl, school, work or anything in between. Then he takes notice of you and he can’t breath, can’t think straight. This has to be some kind of sick dream you aren’t here, you can’t be. But you are and god it hurts.

“Bucky this is, y/n Steve’s girlfriend.” Bucky? who the shit is Bucky? Your eyebrows furrow together in confusion and he stares at you with an open mouth. He tries to get his mouth to form words to say something. anything to you but he can’t he can only stutter out one reply.

“S-steve’s girlfriend?” He looks between you and Steve for any sign of falsehood but Steve isn’t paying attention and you wont look back at him.

“Y/n, This is Bucky, Steve’s best friend.” Steves dad says as he ushers the room to sit down so he can eat his dinner before it gets cold.

“Its nice to meet you Bucky.” You emphasize the name Bucky that you’d never heard him say before and watch as his face falls as he takes the seat closest to Mr.Rogers.

There is a million and seven things that go through your head when you see his face and you are sure he see’s every emotion that passes over yours. You can tell he wants to say something but your heart hurts too much to care about his dilemma at the moment.

You take your seat next to Steve again watching James/Bucky from the corner of your eyes and he is openly staring at.

You’re thankful Steve told you not to wear the dress you had planned on because then you wouldn’t have had your phone on you. You slide it out of your pocket under the table and hope its still on vibrate. You take one finale look up from your lap and over to Bucky who’s staring right at you with a look you can’t quiet put a finger on. You look away from his gaze and back at your lap and send a single text to Steve.

STAR WARS SPOILERS AHEAD

lFor real though: If you don’t want to know then don’t read below and don’t flame me if you do. I am literally even tagging the post too. 

I have looked forward to this movie more than I’ve looked forward to Christmas itself and Christmas is my favorite. It, in my opinion, is one of the best along with the original episodes. It teaches a lesson about being a Jedi that people need to be reminded of as much as Luke needed the reminder but I’ll get to that in a bit. All of this, by the way, is purely my opinion of what we’ve seen and it’s okay to have a different opinion from me like please yes share with me. I love Star Wars and I love discussing it. My inbox and askbox are both open, please come talk to me about this. Anyhow -

We start the movie with the knowledge that the First Order is attacking the Resistance, trying to take them down after tracking them through lightspeed. They’re also almost out of fuel which I feel like accidents and problems happen but I don’t know if General Leia would have been that unprepared but that’s just me. Also, can we take a moment for Carrie Fisher here and just appreciate her final performance? How much of that was her though? I don’t know if they filmed the entire movie with her or only half of it but she was amazing and I truly miss her. Rest in peace, your highness. So the Resistance is screwed and they need to find a way to stay alive. 

The next part of the movie we see while all hell is breaking loose and Poe is grounded now for playing reckless hero is Rey finding Luke on Ahch-To. Finn is no longer in a coma at this point too, by the way, and his first words are “where is Rey?” That’s family, to me anyways like you guys can ship whatever you want but yeah. I’m also a huge personal fan of Poe and Finn but the movie doesn’t seem to condone that for some reason. Probably because it would threaten the masculinity aspects of the uh film. Yeah, that. Anyhow, when Rey finds Luke and hands him the lightsaber his first response is to just huck it over his shoulder without batting an eye. I want to be this level of apathetic when I grow up friends like let me tell you. He proceeds to refuse to train her, stating the Jedi must die, and he basically just carries on with his daily boring routines until he discovers Rey is very powerful. I can’t decide if at this point he’s truly scared of Rey or scared of himself, scared of what happened with Ben, scared and haunted by his past mistakes. He clearly is to some extent but I can’t tell what he’s afraid of more. I am a little surprised that Luke is letting fear rule his decisions with this, making him give up the force because of what happened with Ben and deciding that the Jedi needed to be given up on. Luke has been through a lot in his life, his father being Darth Vader giving us the famous scene where he shouts “NNOOO” in disbelief. He lost his hand, his student, and his best friend. He’s very wise with age though, I’ll give him that. Mark Hamill is also, as always, amazing. He plays a bitter old man who at the end came in at the clutch and gave literally the last of what he had to saving his sister and the others. He believed one last time and then he faded away, being drained from not using the force for a long time. It was rather peaceful, his last words being an apology to Ben and being some wisdom for his sister. With Han Solo dead though, Luke Skywalker dead, and Carrie Fisher dead, that’s the holy trifecta gone. That leaves us only with the current stars that we have and like I appreciate the main characters. I know we have the droids and Chewy but my heart still hurts. I didn’t grow up in the time that these movies were new but I grew up with these movies and like that’s my childhood too. Luke Skywalker was the sign of hope they needed but just as he said, he is not the last Jedi and there will be others to carry on the legacy. Also the scene with Yoda was A+ because failure is the best teacher. He also states that they don’t need those texts and old teachings because honestly being a Jedi comes from within. Or that’s what I took away from it. 

Something else that just happened on Ahch-To was when Rey and Kylo were suddenly connected through the force. He asks why they’re suddenly connected but neither truly know. Snoke admits that he is the one who manipulated them into seeing each other, using the doubt within Kylo to get Rey to come try and “save him.” I honestly thought the two of them were going to be best team buds during that fight scene but when he was all “join me and leave it all behind” I was just like “this idiot, my god.” Also they broke Anakin’s lightsaber which is just rude but it truly also shows they are an equal match for each other so I am also waiting for the moment when Rey either shoves a saber through his heart or makes him realize he can be redeemed. Honestly he’s still conflicted but we’ll see where this goes. Also the entire time my boyfriend was just like “they’re totally going to fall in love” but I don’t know if they’re still related or not. He could’ve just been talking shit when he said her family was nothing and she came from nothing and was nothing. Or that’s exactly what he was doing, trying to emotionally abuse her into saying yes. Which does nothing for his character for me like I want Ben Solo to be redeemed but even Leia has given up hope on her son, stating that she knows he is gone. So at this point, it’s going to take a huge miracle to save Ben. Let’s just be real about that, okay? 

Earlier on in the movie, when we see Poe pushing forward despite Leia telling him to fall back, there are a bunch of bombers who are trying to take out a major part of the First Order’s ship. I honestly can’t remember the name, so sue me. But they succeed with one bomber. A lot of people died though, including a woman who later on we learn is the sister of Rose Tico who finds Finn trying to escape through a pod to go and find Rey, to lead her to safety. She stuns him, calling him a coward before he begins to tell her everything going on while he “can’t feel” his “teeth” because of what she shot him with. She is surprised to learn they are tracking them through light speed and they go talk to Poe which births the plan of them breaking into the First Order ship, taking out the tracker, and it’s a beautiful side quest. Rose suddenly loving Finn though came out of no where and I’m not okay with it because I wasn’t given the impression that was even happening until she saved him when he was being dumb. Also, does she ever wake up? The movie just kind of ended without us knowing if she was really okay. We see her sleeping and Finn by her side but. I don’t know. I don’t mind it, it could end up being a really great relationship. I just wish it was written better than her just sharing stories of her childhood and them narrowly escaping death multiple times. Friendships are built that way too, you know, just saying. 

Can we also just talk about Holdo for a moment? She comes across very cunty and people don’t seem to really warm up to her character until later. I love how she just sliced through the First Order though like yasss queen. She also was just trying to do the right thing, even if Poe didn’t agree with her to the point of staging a mutiny. I think he was also kind of upset about Leia being a coma and wasn’t handling that well. The one thing I’m not sure I’m comfortable with in this whole movie is the death toll of major characters though. Feels bad, man. I could go on and on forever about this film and my nitpicking of it but I really did love this movie. It’s honestly one of my favorites and I can’t wait until it comes out on DVD.
