bunny rabbits & a clover patch - g.w
Pairing: George x Fem!Reader Summary: All the times Y/N and George spent their days in the clover patch next to her house. Warnings: Minor character death (Y/Nâs mother, itâs in the second paragraph), I guess a mention of the war but itâs like one or two lines and itâs super brief like blink and youâll miss it. Word Count: 4.8kÂ
A/N: A huge thank you to @whiz-bangs78â who sent me this ask for a made up title game that inspired his entire fic (although I changed the title a smidge)! Requests are open and constructive criticism is always appreciated! This is my new baby, my most favourite thing Iâve ever written so please be nice
Please let me know if youâre interested in being added to a tag list!
-----------------------------
Y/N is five years old when she moves from the bustling city of Bristol to the quaint, little magical village of Ottery St. Catchpole. Sheâs just now starting to get her magic, little spurts here and there. Recently she dropped a ball down the stairs of the townhouse she and her dad live in and she somehow levitated it for two seconds before it slammed into a mirror and broke it.
Y/Nâs dad is a muggle, her mother was a witch and unfortunately passed shortly after she was born. Being a single dad is hard, and being the single dad to a witch when youâre a muggle is even harder, so her dad did the only logical thing he could think of.
He knew his late wife dreamed of raising Y/N surrounded by magic, to give her the childhood she never had. Y/Nâs mother was an extremely gifted muggle-born witch and she wanted nothing more than to raise her children with magic in tow. So when Y/N started to exhibit magical symptoms, he reached out to some of his late wifeâs friends to find the best magical village in England. If it was magic she wanted, it was magic she was going to get.
Thatâs how he ends up here, in a tiny cottage for two on the outskirts of the village.Â
He looks down at the piece of paper in his hand. Itâs the address of the ânicest wizarding family you will ever meetâ and it turns out itâs the house on the plot of land next to his own. Scrawled in messy handwriting is the name Arthur and Molly Weasley.
Heâd gotten the note from a friend, someone who works at the ministry with Arthur. He canât provide a magical childhood for his daughter, but he hopes the lovely family that resides next to him in Ottery St. Catchpole can.
Theyâve only just moved in when thereâs a knock at the door. Y/N screams in excitement as her dad opens the door and sheâs met with a pudgy looking woman with fiery red hair and two identically looking boys next to her. One of the boys is missing his two front teeth in the bottom row, grinning widely and the other boy is clinging to his motherâs leg, clearly more cautious than his exuberant sibling.
Y/N immediately decides theyâre going to be her best friends. Even if boys have cooties and are sometimes gross.Â
âIâm Y/N!â she exclaims loudly, much to the dismay of her father who reminds her to use her inside voice. This makes her pout unhappily and in turn, makes the boy clinging to his motherâs leg smile.
âIâm George!â He replies, equally loud in fashion hoping to cheer the girl up. This was not Georgeâs best idea, however, as it then causes the missing-toothed child to declare himself as Fred so loud, Molly and Y/Nâs father sends them outside.Â
They sit themselves down on the clover patch to the right of the house and start getting to know each other. Y/N learns there're five other Weasley siblings, their youngest being their only sister named Ginny, she's a mere two years old and their oldest is William, who they both affectionately call Billy, and Y/N learns he's almost thirteen.
âWow,â Y/N says, suddenly feeling extremely jealous. Sheâs an only child and while sheâs only five, she has a childâs intuition that her dad isnât ready to meet someone and bring more siblings into her life. âIâm jealous. I wish I had brothers and sisters.â
Fred puffs up his chest and grins, âWeâll be your brothers!â The grin on his face is 100% sincere and he looks so happy to gain another sister.Â
âReally?â Y/N questions looking at George for approval. âOf course. Are we best friends now?â He questions and Y/N eagerly nods her head.
The three of them spend their time playing tag or showing each other their âaccidental magicâ. Molly at one point calls out the window at the twins telling them they know better than to encourage underage magic but when George winks at Y/N as he somehow manages to turn her hair blue for two seconds itâs clear he doesnât care about his motherâs warning.
âItâs okay,â he starts when he sees the look of fear rise in Y/Nâs eyes, âweâre only five. If someone comes theyâll just see three magical kids and leave.âÂ
Soon enough, Molly is muttering apologies about staying so late and trying to round up the boys to go back to their own home. Fred ends up in a tree, saying he wants to stay and poking his tongue out at his mother.Â
George however, is timidly looking at the clover patch they were all sitting in and plucks one, handing it to Y/N. When she examines it, she notices itâs almost a four-leaf clover, the stem is there if you look close enough, but the leaf itself is missing. âAlmost luck, for you!âÂ
He runs away at that, looking almost borderline shy and when Fred chases him all the way home, Y/N is convinced these boys will be her friends for life.Â
-
Theyâre eight now, and itâs a regular occurrence for Y/N and the twins to be seen together. Their parents have started referring to them as the âmischief trioâ because whenever the three of them are together, no one can turn their back for a second without something happening.
Y/Nâs currently at The Burrow, convincing the twins to come to see her new pet bunny rabbits. Fred is reluctant, wanting to stay and play on his toy broom and trying to convince George he wants to do the same.
Fred, as usual, has an evil plan that involves the beaterâs bat in their quidditch kit and Percyâs head after he told their mum that Fred was trying to fly Charlieâs broom yesterday. This resulted in Fred getting no dessert after dinner and the eight-year-old boy wants revenge.
âI donât know, Freddie,â George starts, looking at the small girl to his left. They might only be children, but the twins are already growing taller and Y/N can barely keep up anymore, âI kind of want to meet the bunnies.âÂ
âCome on, Georgie! Percyâs a prat and we need to get him back!â Fred dramatically exclaims as he flops his body onto the couch in the living room. As usual, itâs we, Y/N is always roped into the twinsâ plans, and while she usually doesnât mind, today isnât the day for it. Fred never really knows when itâs time to be quiet, always wanting to be on the go and this pops an idea into Y/Nâs head.
âDaddy got cows recently,â she begins and she notices how that immediately grabs Fredâs attention. He loves cows, whenever heâs in the car with Y/N and her father he points them out every time they see one, âyou sure you donât want to come to meet them?âÂ
Fred is out the door quicker than you can say pranks, running towards the fence that divides their two properties. Y/N and George have to stop and tell Molly where theyâre going because Fred left so hastily, that he didnât even tell anyone before. After Molly sighs and gives them permission that the twins don't really care if they get, George grabs Y/Nâs hand and runs out the door after his brother.
When they finally catch up to him, Fred's face is bright red from exertion, almost matching his hair and his eyes are bright and wide. Y/Nâs dad only got two cows at first, testing the waters with how heâd feel looking after them but Fred is in absolute awe.Â
George pushes him over the fence as heâs laughing, telling him to hurry up so they can get out of the blasting summer sun. George and Y/N slowly make their way back over to the clover patch and Fred stays near the cows. Heâs watching them shyly and Y/N thinks this is the only time heâs ever seen him calm and quiet- not wanting to scare the cows.Â
âThis is Ruby,â Y/N says as she places the small, white rabbit on Georgeâs lap. He looks nervous like heâs worried about dropping or squeezing the bunny rabbit too hard but when he settles, the bunny is content sitting in his lap.
âThis is Cutiepie, I named him!â Y/N says proudly about the black bunny rabbit in her hands, âheâs my best friend.âÂ
George looks up at Y/N at that and before he can say anything, Y/N is giggling, âDonât look so worried, Georgie. Youâll always be my number one...â she pauses for a moment, and looks between Fred and the bunny rabbit in her hand before giggling, âjust donât tell Freddie.â Â
The two of them sit in comfortable silence, admiring the two bunnies as they eventually clamper down their laps and start hopping around. George is mesmerised- the only pets heâs ever had have been the chickens, an owl and the gnomes if you count them and he hopes Y/N will have him over every day to play with the bunnies. And hang out with her of course.Â
âWhy did you want to come to hang out with the bunnies?â Y/N soon questions, curious as to why George chose the calmness over chaos. They both look over at Fred, whoâs now bent at the knees looking like heâs going to run at a cow.
âI donât know,â George shrugs, he didnât know why he wanted to spend time sitting in one spot instead of pranking his older brother with Fred, âBunnies are cool, Iâve never met a bunny before.â
Y/N hums in agreement, she thinks bunnies are the coolest pets someone could have and sheâs glad George agrees. If George didnât like bunnies, she thinks sheâd have to demote him to number two best friend and while she loves Fred, she doesnât want to do that.
-Â
Itâs the day the three of them have been waiting for as long as they can remember. Theyâre on Platform 9 Ÿ, trying to get away from their parents and onto the train.
âIâll miss you so much, sweetie,â her dad says, and Y/N thinks she might cry. Sheâs never been far away from her dad for long periods of time. The longest sheâs ever been away from him was two days and even then, she was just at The Burrow.
But now sheâs leaving for school and itâs all the way in Scotland, which to an 11-year-old moving away for magical boarding school, is forever away from her family. Tears well up in her eyes and her dad pulls her into a hug.
âIâm so proud of you,â he says pulling away and wiping the tears that have fallen from his daughterâs eyes, âyour mother would be proud too. Now remember, stick with Percy and Charlie, Molly told me theyâll look after you.â Bill had graduated earlier in the year, leaving the 2nd and 3rd oldest Weasley brothers to mentor âmischief trioâ as they navigated Hogwarts.Â
âPlease make sure the twins donât get into too much trouble,â Molly says, pulling the small girl into a hug, but she knows itâs useless. Where Fred and George go, Y/N goes too and detention is included.Â
They eventually make it onto the train, Y/N noticing the tears in her dadâs eyes as he waves to her. They look around for a few moments, trying to find an empty compartment.Â
They eventually find one with just one boy in it who looks around their age. Heâs got dreadlocks in his hair and he already looks bored. When he notices the doors open, he smiles widely and ushers the three of them to come sit with him.
âIâm Lee,â he introduces himself and after the introductions are done they find out heâs also in their year and convinced heâs going to be in Gryffindor.
âUs too!â The twins shout at the same time. Their entire family are in Gryffindor and while the Weasleyâs are by no means a strict wizarding family, the twins would feel quite odd if they werenât sorted into Gryffindor.
Y/N however, did not know what house sheâd be sorted into. Her mother had been in Ravenclaw but she didnât believe she had any of the Ravenclaw attributes. Lost in her thoughts, she doesnât notice George shuffling closer to her and tapping her gently.
âAre you okay?â He asks and Y/N nods her head, contemplating if she should express her worry to George. She knows itâs silly, but now sheâs starting to get a bit worked up. Worried that after all these years, her and George will drift apart, especially if theyâre in different houses and definitely if sheâs in Slytherin. âJust worried. What if⊠What if we drift apart, Georgie?â she whispers.
George hates to admit heâs had the same worry and the look on Y/Nâs face tells George this is the first time sheâs even considered this and itâs killing him. Heâs grown quite affectionate for Y/N over their six years of friendship. Molly and Y/Nâs dad have jokingly asked whenâs the wedding numerous times and while they both yell about cooties, Georgeâs face gets the tiniest bit red every single time the joke is mentioned.Â
âI promise we wonât. Remember what I said the day we became friends? Best friends, and best friends are a forever kind of thing,â he promises, holding out his pinky for Y/N to wrap her own around and they stamp each otherâs thumb with their own. Their way of promising each other.Â
âRemember, if you break the promise, Georgie, your thumb breaks,â she says with full sincerity and George remembers the one time he gave her this exact threat. She had cried for 20 minutes thinking that sheâd accidentally made an Unbreakable Vow over getting ice-cream with him at Diagon Alley and poor nine-year-old George was forced into comforting Y/N and apologised profusely.
Fred and Lee are talking animatedly about quidditch (Fred canât wait to be a beater and while Lee isnât big on sports, he thinks heâd be a great commentator) when Y/N spots George rifling through his bag.Â
He pulls out a photograph and smiles as he looks down at it. Itâs the last picture they took together before summer ended. Y/Nâs dad took it on his muggle camera so itâs not moving, but George doesnât mind. Theyâre smiling widely, bigger than theyâve ever smiled before and holding their wands they just got at Diagon Alley. They, of course, are standing in their clover patch, Y/N trying to hold the black bunny rabbit and wand at the same time and her dad clicked the capture button just as Cutiepie tried to jump out of Y/Nâs arms.Â
It makes him laugh every time he looks at it, but seeing the worry still in Y/Nâs brow, he thinks she needs the photo more than he does. âHere,â he says, nudging her briefly and handing her the photo. âWhen youâre worried weâre drifting, look at this and remember youâre stuck with me forever.â
Y/Nâs eyes well with tears, this is the sweetest gesture anyone has ever done for her. âThanks, Georgie. Youâre stuck with me as well,â she says, tucking the picture into her robe pocket that rests over her heart.
-Â
Summer of â92 arrives fast and once again, Y/N spends most of her time at The Burrow causing mayhem. Today, her dadâs at work and while he 100% trusts his daughter to be home alone, he does not trust her best friends, so she waltzes over to The Burrow, walking in like sheâs lived there her whole life, kisses Molly hello on the cheek and runs around, trying to find her boys.Â
Itâs scorching, way too hot for summer in Devon and all the Weasley siblings who still live at home have decided to go swimming in the pond. They started playing Marco Polo until Fred started cheating by running outside of the pond so he wouldnât get caught and then tried to play Chicken fight until Ginny fell off of Georgeâs shoulders and almost hit her head.Â
Now, everyoneâs calmed down and just relaxing. George and Y/N are cuddled up and floating around and itâs making her heart race. In the last year, her feelings for George have developed from platonic to romantic and being this close to him, while not unusual, is making her heart race. But it doesnât last long, and soon enough Fred splashes them to get their attention.
âIâm tired and I need a nap, Iâm going inside,â Fred says, eyeing his best friends. Heâs had the assumption that something is going on with them for a while, and while heâd love to meddle, this is George and Y/N and thereâs an unspoken rule between the three of them that involves not messing with each other.
So George and Y/N decide to get out of the pond and make their way over to Y/Nâs house. They sit themselves down in their clover patch and quickly get the bunnies out. Itâs a tradition at this point, and this is their spot. This is the place they tell each other everything, almost everything in Y/Nâs case and the place nothing else matters but each other.
Cutiepie and Ruby are getting older now, but theyâve had babies and now thereâs plenty of bunnies surrounding the pair of friends. George picks one of the babies up and nurses it, having gotten over his fear of squishing them long ago. He pulls faces at them that cause Y/N to laugh and George loves it.
He loves making her laugh.
âHow weird is it that we had You-Know-Who on the back of Quirrell's head, teaching us all year?â George says. They both heard the stories first hand from Harry, Ron and Hermione. The school year they just finished being ridiculous for the three first years, but Y/N canât help the anxious bubble forming in her throat.
âIâm scared, Georgie,â she says, turning to face him and the fear in her eyes is obvious, âWeâre only young but whateverâs happening seems like itâs going to be happening fast now Harryâs at school.â She sniffles, and George thinks heâs put his foot in his mouth. So he does the only thing he knows how to do.
He shuffles closer to Y/N and wraps his arms around her, difficult because of the two bunnies in their laps but he makes it work. âIâm always going to protect you, donât worry,â he says confidently. He doesnât know how or when heâd need to protect her, but she must know just how much she means to him.
They sit in silence, just listening to each other breathing and patting the bunnies in their lap. The silence between them is always comfortable, nine years of friendship does that to you. But George is itching to ask something, ask something that could change everything. Heâs noticed, recently, that while himself and Fred are at quidditch practice, Y/N and Lee are getting closer.Â
Sometimes, when Oliver sets quidditch practice on the weekends, Y/N and Lee go to Hogsmeade together and George wonders why he has an icky feeling in his stomach when he hears about their days when that happens.Â
âCan I ask you something?â George asks and thereâs no backing out now. He has no plans to confess, not at age 14 when he doesnât think he needs a relationship, but he needs to know or he might, as Fred would say dramatically, die. When Y/N hums in agreement and turns to remove herself from his arms, his heart starts beating faster and before he can even stop himself, heâs blurting out the question-
âAre you dating Lee?âÂ
Y/N stares at him in shock, not entirely convinced he hasnât picked up her feelings for him and then she laughs. She laughs hard. And George is so confused that he starts laughing as well.
âMe and Lee?â She questions between giggles, âThereâs no way, heâs like,â she laughs again at the thought of her and Lee dating, âheâs like in love with Angelina. Itâs ridiculous.âÂ
George realises how dumb he sounds. Leeâs feelings for Angelina have been so obvious, especially when he decides to comment on how good-looking she is during matches now that heâs the quidditch commentator. But George always thought he was joking and from his perspective, it always seemed like Lee had a small thing for Y/N.Â
âLee and I are a no go,â she says when George doesnât say anything besides his awkward laughter, âI.. I think I like someone else, but I donât know. Iâm 14 for crying out loud,â she laughs, âI donât know what love is.â
Sheâs lying, sheâs 100% sure love is what she feels with George Weasley. The way she feels with the twins is different. Fred is chaos personified and she knows if sheâs ever hurt, Fred will be the first person to go after whoever hurt her, no matter who it is. But George is comforting, like home-cooked meals and Mollyâs sweaters personified and sheâs sure this is what love is.Â
George pretends to agree, theyâre both as clueless as each other in regards to their feelings. George knows what love is, and itâs what he feels for his best friend whoâs sitting with him in their tiny clover patch.
-Â
Y/Nâs heart is aching. She hasnât seen the twins in weeks and without seeing George every day, her days are a little bit duller. She understands heâs been busy, after all, opening the most anticipated joke shop in Diagon Alley is bound to take up most of your time, but Y/N misses the days when she could yell for her best friend and heâd come running, no questions asked.Â
Y/Nâs short term boyfriend has just broken up with her and she longs for the comfort she knows the lanky, 18-year-old ginger could give her. They werenât together long and she knows she should never have tried to date someone while she thinks sheâs still in love with George, but it still hurts.
So, sheâs sitting in the clover patch as usual. She still lives at home, her father being accommodating while thereâs a war raging in the Wizarding World and he understands itâs hard to get a job these days.Â
She always sits there when she needs the comfort of George and heâs nowhere near. Today is one of those days. Everything is building up and she needs him but she doesnât want to be a bother. They owl back and forth most days and heâs always talking about how much work he has to do.
Sheâs been laying in the clover patch, their clover patch, for so long the sun is starting to set and when she sits up she sees him.
George doesnât miss the red-rimmed eyes and the messy hair thatâs covered in grass. He notices the confused look on her face and he picks up a clover and conjures it into a bouquet of wildflowers as he walks over to her.
âHi, darling,â he says, sitting down and passing her the bouquet. Y/N is trying her hardest to pretend like her heart isnât swooning but it is, and itâs all Georgeâs fault. âYour dad owled me. Said you needed some George time,â he chuckles quietly and Y/N lets out a groan.
Of course, her dad decided to meddle.Â
âHey, donât stress,â George says as he sees the look of annoyance on her face, âI donât mind. I told you Iâm always here for you, didnât I?â She hates that heâs right.
âYou did,â she starts, âbut youâve been so busy. You donât deserve to be forced into listening to my boy troubles.â Sheâs mocking herself now and George lightly pushes her and shakes his head. Anything upsetting Y/N is worth listening too and heâd listen to her drone on about a broken muggle device if it meant she wasnât bottling her emotions up.Â
âSean broke up with me, said I wasnât in it enough for him, whichâŠâ She trails off, debating whether she should continue, âhe wasnât wrong. I wasnât in it enough for him but it still sucks,â she mutters.ïżœïżœ
George is well aware she just got out of a relationship and heâs also well aware theyâve been friends, for now, thirteen years and if anything was going to happen between them, it would have happened by now. But he canât help but feel the slightest bit happy when he hears theyâve broken up.Â
âDo you want to talk about why?â He enquires trying to be a good friend. Y/N falls flat on her back and sighs as she looks up at the sky above her, âIâve been in love with the same person since I was 14 and I think I was trying to get over him? Or is that too specific?â she laughs but George knows she isnât joking.Â
âWhy⊠Why havenât you told them?â He asks, hoping to all four founders of Hogwarts that Y/N is talking about him. She looks at him, a glint in her eye and she decides she needs answers. She needs to know if her feelings for George Weasley are ever going to be reciprocated or if she needs to get over him.
âScared. Weâve been friends for so longâŠâ She hints and she hopes to Godric he gets the hint and doesnât think sheâs talking about Fred, but decides to say more just in case, âHeâs tall, funny, ginger, an incredible quidditch player, great with animalsâŠâ
âYou like Charlie?â He teases to hide the excitement bubbling in his chest and she has to resist the urge to slap him. But she caught the glint of happiness in her eyes and he doesnât even have to speak for her to know her feelings are reciprocated.
She launches herself into his lap, almost pressing him into a bunny when he falls backwards and she straddles his waist, pressing kisses over his cheeks, âNo! I love you, George Fabian Weasley!âÂ
âHey, hey, hey,â he exclaims, swatting her away, âWhat if I didnât love you back?â He teases, eyebrows raised and Y/N lets out a cackle of laughter, âI know you, George Weasley, the look in your eye made it obvious you were excited I love you.â
Itâs Georgeâs turn to smile like an idiot as he rolls them over and presses his lips to hers, finally. Thirteen years of friendship, four years of loving her and he was not prepared for this kiss to knock the wind out of his lungs. All the love he feels for her is reciprocated and he feels like the happiest man in the entire world.Â
When they pull apart, Georgeâs eyes are transfixed on hers. The redness disappearing and being replaced by what he can only assume is absolute pure joy. She blushes and turns her head, not being able to handle the attention heâs giving her and when George tries to follow her eyes, his own eye catches something.
He reaches up above her head and plucks something out of the ground before showing it to her. âA four-leaf clover,â he whispers and George canât help but think itâs fate. The day they became friends heâd found almost a four-leaf clover and the day they became more, he found a real one.
âYour lucky day, boyfriend,â she winks as she pulls him into another kiss, but he stops her and she gives him a pout, âWho said I was your boyfriend?â He teases and the look of fear that flickers across Y/Nâs face is reminiscent of the day he threatened her with a broken thumb.
âI- I- Sorry, I assum-â He cuts her off with a kiss, laughing against her lips, âYou just didnât give me a chance to ask you, darling,â he says as he pulls away and Y/Nâs face is as red as a tomato in embarrassment and he kisses both her cheeks in reassurance.
âY/N Y/L/N, would you please be my girlfriend?â he asks, but itâs almost phrased like a statement, like she has no other choice and honestly, Y/N doesnât mind.
When she pretends to think about it, George waggles his eyebrows and waves the four-leaf clover in her face and she pulls him into a kiss again, hoping that a âyes, Iâll be yours for the rest of my daysâ is obvious.

under the mistletoe, watching the fire glow day 20: childhood
Character A and Character B are estranged childhood best friends,, percabeth,, this is definitely my favorite day
Percy Jackson is seven years old when he falls in love.
He doesnât know it at the time, or for a long time after that.
When he first meets her on the swings, when sheâs sitting by herself, he thinks she looks like a princess. Her curls are pretty and blonde, not a hair out of place. The first thing he really notices, though, is that she looks sad.
Looking back on it, he thinks that maybe thatâs why he approached her. Percy was never the kid to step out and make friends first. But she looked like she could use it.
So as he sits next to her on the swings, he asks her, âWhatâs your name?â
She looks up from where her feet were kicking at the dirt, covering her pretty princess shoes in specks of black and brown. Her eyes are a striking grey â the kind that he could not possibly forget, even at the ripe age of seven. She tells him, âAnnabeth,â and doesnât say another word.
He responds with, âIâm Percy,â and follows her lead, silence settling all around them. He tries again the next day when he finds her sitting by herself on the same swings during recess. Today, sheâs in a blue dress, and he tells her that itâs her favorite color.
âReally?â she asks, kicking the dirt again. âMy daddy wanted me to wear the pink one.â
âI think the blue one looks better than pink,â he says.
At twelve years old, he thinks thatâs when she became his best friend. That wonderfully dull day when the grey clouds rolled overhead on a chilly October day. It was the day the clouds matched her eyes too, he remembers.
It was the day he fell in love.
Percy Jackson is twelve years old when his heart first breaks.
Heâs sitting in the grass outside her house, watching her cry. The tears roll down her face, and matching tears roll down his. Itâs funny because they do everything together. They experience love and heartbreak and friendship and tears at once, and always together.
Percy and Annabeth, together forever and always.
Or so he thought.
But itâs only a week later that she moves out officially, and he never sees her again. Theyâd promised to keep in touch, but like all friendships, it always fades. Sheâs in California, and heâs in New York, and theyâre both twelve. So young and wrongfully full of hope. But that was them too. Hopeful and bright, wishing of a future together.
At eighteen years old, he remembers their promise to find each other again. It had been an offhand comment, one that theyâd seen in TV shows and movies. If they both turned twenty and werenât married, then theyâd marry each other. Percy can look back on it with a smile, because twenty was so young. So much life yet to come. But they had been ready to marry each other.
Maybe it was them being naĂŻve, or maybe it was them being in love and looking for an excuse to stay by each otherâs side.
Percy Jackson is eighteen years old when he gets his first girlfriend. Her name is Rachel, and he thinks that sheâs really pretty.
(Not as pretty as Annabeth was, but he doesnât tell her that.)
(He doesnât need to. She already knows.)
At twenty-two years old, he now understands that he was always in love with Annabeth. It was rooted so deep inside of him that it made him who he was. There was never any getting over her because sheâs what made him him. He was so young when he met her that he was still creating himself and his personality, and when she became a part of his life, she became a part of him.
Thereâs no one to blame for his failed relationship except himself. Somehow, Percy isnât too upset anyways because he loved Rachel, but he never loved her the way he loved Annabeth, and he never would.
Percy Jackson is twenty-two years old when his heart aches for her.
There is a girl that looks just like him standing across the street. Or at least he thinks so. He hasnât actually seen what she looks like because she hadnât had a phone when she moved, and any forms of social media heâs sure she has now, she didnât then. Heâd lost contact with her entire family too.
But thereâs something about her calling to him. She has those beautiful blonde ringlets down her back, not a hair out of place, and she is wearing a blue felt coat that falls to below her knees. Her shoes are white, with specks of black and brown as though sheâs been kicking at the dirt, and it brings a smile to his face. Annabeth never did grow out of that habit for as long as he knew her.
Percy crosses the street, but he has no intentions of actually speaking to the stranger. He just needs to get back to his apartment, and she happens to be standing in the way of that. She turns just as he passes by, so he doesnât get a glimpse of her face, but thatâs okay. Millions of people live in New York City, and it is not possible that the one standing before him is her.
But then he is unsure if itâs his imagination when there is a faint, âAnnabeth!â called from somewhere along the sidewalk, and she turns to the voice, and he turns to her.
His heart stops. Sheâs looking at someone else, but he can see the striking grey eyes that match the clouds overhead on this wintery December day, two days before Christmas. It has to be his imagination because she doesnât move, but then she starts towards the voice, and he hears her name again, and itâs her.
Percy chases after her, weaving through the crowds along the street, and she is so close â
So close â
Percyâs fingers curl around her shoulder without thinking, and she jumps, whirling around, and he catches fear in her eyes that causes him to shrink back.
His voice is stuck in his throat because he is face to face with the girl he fell in love with fifteen years ago, and there is recognition in her eyes.
âPercy?â
âYeah,â he chokes out.
Then she smiles and laughs, pulling him in for an immediate hug. âOh my god, Percy.â
His arms wrap snugly around her, and she smells so good, and is as perfect as he remembers. Heâs afraid if he opens his eyes, sheâs going to disappear. âOpen your eyes, silly,â she says.
He tells her truthfully, âIâm scared youâll disappear if I do.â
She laughs again, a beautiful sound to his ears. Her hand slides into his, thumb rubbing soothingly. âIâm right here.â
So he opens his eyes, and sheâs looking earnestly at him. Heâs towering over her now, different from when she was taller than him at twelve years old.
âYouâre somehow even prettier than I remembered,â he says before he can stop himself. His face blushes suddenly as he realizes what he just said, and heâs about to apologize before she stops him.
âIâd hope so,â she teases. âI was twelve! Braces were not a good look.â âYou made them work,â he says, stepping to the side when someone tries to slide by. Everything is suddenly overwhelming, the sounds of cars rushing by and chatter all around, the honking of horns. He spots someone standing over Annabethâs shoulder patiently. âIâm sorry, am I interrupting something?â
Annabeth shakes her head and motions the girl closer. Sheâs pretty too, but she doesnât even begin to hold a flame to Annabeth. âThis is my friend Piper. We were just walking around the city for a bit before heading home. Piper, this is my best friend from when I was younger. I told you about Percy?â
Piper makes a sly face at Annabeth, to which Annabeth pointedly ignores. Piper reaches a hand forwards to shake his hand. âHow could I not have heard of the famous Percy? She talks about you all the time.â
âI talk about you a healthy amount,â Annabeth corrects. âHe was my best friend.â
âThe way you speak of him, I wouldâve thought you still were.â
Annabeth and Percy lock eyes. âYeah, well, I guess we just fell out of touch.â
âItâs a shame,â Piper says. âYou two would have been cute as husband and wife.â
The statement makes Percyâs heart flutter. âHusband and wife?â
Annabeth rolls her eyes playfully. âI told Piper about our agreement to get married at twenty. I think we may have missed the deadline, though.â
Percy laughs. âI guess we did.â
They fall into a silence, and then Piper says, âI should get going. Iâll leave the two of you to get reacquainted, maybe even married.â
âYes, thank you, Piper,â Annabeth says.
âIâll see you at home, love,â she says. âBe safe.â
âI will,â Annabeth answers. They both watch as Piper leaves, and then Percyâs addressing her.
âHome?â he asks. âWhere exactly is that now?â
âNew York, actually. I moved here for university. I wasnât sure if you still lived here though.â
âI couldnât move away from here,â he jokes. âI had to stay put in case you ever decided to come back so youâd know where to find me.â
âIâm not going to lie, Percy. Youâre a part of the reason I decided to come back,â she says. She shifts her feet like she wants to say something but doesnât know if she should. âThereâs so much to say I donât even know where to start.â
And Percy knows exactly what she means. âWhy donât we go back to my place? I can make us some hot chocolate and we can catch up.â
âIâd like that.â
Itâs a quick five minutes spent walking before theyâre back to his apartment. He opens the door and is immediately overcome with warmth, a drastic change from outside. Annabeth steps inside, kicking off her shoes slowly as she looks around.
âThis is a nice place,â she says. âYou live alone?â
âYeah. I tried the roommate thing, but it just didnât work out. My job pays well enough for it, though.â
âAnd what is your job?â
âOh, uh â I work at an aquarium. Nothing too fancy yet, but I do get to play with animals a lot. Iâm a marine biologist.â
âI always knew youâd be,â she teases.
âAnd I always knew youâd be an architect,â he says. âDid that come true?â
âIt did, actually. Iâve made it pretty far pretty fast too, and whenever people ask how I did it, I tell them you. You were always the person to cheer me on when we were younger. It helped a lot more than I think you realized.â
âIâm glad.â
They both sit on the couch, close but still far enough to keep a couple of inches between them. He faces her, one leg up on the couch, and she leans into him. It feels comforting, like theyâd never been split apart.
Percy suddenly remembers when they were twelve and agreed to marry each other when they reached twenty. It causes him to start laughing, and heâs sure he looks insane.
âYou okay?â she asks, amused.
âIâm just remembering â we could be married by now. I mean, obviously we wouldnât be, but we really said weâd be twenty and marry each other.â
âWe really did that,â she agrees.
âI donât know why we chose twenty,â he admits. âWhy not thirty?â He snickers. âWe were so young we didnât even understand that most people arenât married by twenty, or even done with school.â
She smiles softly. âI knew, Percy.â
âWhat?â
âI knew twenty was too young to be married.â
âThen why did you agree to it?â
âBecause I loved you,â she says. âI thought it was obvious.â
âI loved you too.â
She gives him a look. âIt was more than just loving you. I was in love with you, and I wanted a reason to marry you. Even if I was twelve.â
âIâm hurt,â he says, a hand over his heart. But his heart is beating so fast he wouldnât be surprised if it plops right out of her chest. âYou were in love with me?â
âWould you be alright if I said I still was?â
âIâd be more than alright with that,â he says, âconsidering Iâm quite certain Iâm still in love with you too.â
She smirks but doesnât move. âSomethingâs changed, Percy.â
âWhat?â
âI canât read you anymore. I used to be able to tell what you were feeling, but now⊠I canât tell if youâre joking.â
âIâm really not,â he assures her. âItâs insane, and probably way too soon to say this after seeing you again, but I would actually drop everything and marry you if you just said yes.â
âIâm tempted to,â she says.
âMy mom would be over the moon.â
Annabeth coos. âHow is your mom?â âSheâs doing well. She had another baby, actually. I have a little sister, Estelle. Sheâs four now.â
âIâm happy for her.â
âMe too.â
And theyâre silent again, but her face is right in front of his, and she may not be able to read him anymore, but he can surely read her.
He wants to kiss her badly because even after ten years, his love has never disappeared. He could live another lifetime and still be head over heels for her. So he whispers, âCan I kiss you?â
And she answers, âYes.â
Itâs everything he couldâve imagined. His breath is taken away, and her lips fit his perfectly. Sheâs soft and warm, and sheâs beautiful and perfect, and now sheâs here in his arms.
He pulls away, and when he looks her in the eyes, he sees a burning passion. And he feels it in his stomach too. Because a simple kiss will not make up for lost time. And itâs been ten years, but when a love is as strong as theirs, there is no point in waiting.
It happens fast. Percyâs shirt is pulled over his head, and hers follows soon after. They quickly make their way to his bedroom, and everything happens so fast after that that he is unable to keep up. His heart pounds, brain goes numb, lips swollen with every agonizing kiss she places on him.
Itâs heaven and hell, fire and rain, and Percy and Annabeth.
Percy Jackson fell in love at seven years old.
He is twenty-two years old, and that love is finally his.

after a while everything calmed down and he tries to get the position that previously belonged to jason, the position of praetor. octavian wanted this place for so many reasons, among them the precision on the part of his family, if octavian did not become a praetor they would hate him, he could not let anyone be a praetor, no one else could have the place of jason. one day out of nowhere a greek boy arrived this guys who could control the water, in less than a week he became a praetor and won everyone's love, even Reyna adored him, octavian is 100% sure that jason would hate percy. to his surprise, a couple of days later his great friend jason grace returned home, on a boat with a group of teenagers and with a faun, jason came hand in hand with a very beautiful girl, inthe second octavian detest her. jason didn't even speak to him, he only spoke with reyna and he went to show the place to his girlfriend, a certain piper. octavian was devastated, the person he loved the most in this world didn't even say a damn (lol) hello to him, could it be that jason doesn't love him anymore? from one moment to another the city was attacked, jason and his new friends ran away with the greek boy, hazel and frank, two new campers. octavian after this he saw jason again just a couple times, when he was trying to kill him (sad i know). the last time saw him was a few moments before he died, he was flying with piper and that boy who blew up his home, a certain leo aka jason's new best friend. we all know what happened, octavian died, he could never say goodbye to his best friend, he likes to think that jason cried for him, that he felt guilty in some way for his death, but who's kidding, he knows very well that jason feels nothing for him, nothing just hatred. the only person who made jason grace's childhood not so bad died. this guy is still being a golden boy, a golden boy who never really made a friend without a person (regulary an adult) help him, a golden boy who never was a kid, just a military. jason grace was just a hero, and thats sad.

Lore Book Review
Lore Book Review by Alexandra BrackenÂ
Lore by Alexandra Bracken was one of 2021âs most anticipated YA novels and it's easy to see why. The plot summary itself is enough to pull you in with the intriguing concoction of calling it the combination of The Hunger Games and the Percy Jackson series.Â
Whatâs not to love when you fuse the illicit danger of Katniss Everdeen with the mythological enchantment of Rick Riordanâs masterpiece?
Turns out, quite a lot unfortunately.Â
Before I get into why this book didnât live up to the insurmountable hype it built up, Iâll attempt to give a basic summary. The key word being attempt as a good portion of this novelâs plot was a mind boggling and convoluted mess.Â
The book takes place in modern day New York which Bracken likes to remind you every other paragraph with small snippets about how the city that never sleeps smells like sewage and is yet still the best place on earth apparently.Â
Donât get me wrong, I love New York as much as the next person, but the pandering to the Big Apple got annoying after awhile.Â
Within the cantankerous city lives a girl named Lore which we are introduced to by means of her kicking ass in an underground Chinese restaurantâs fighting ring.Â
Pretty strong start.Â
Loreâs world (and the readerâs frankly) is tipped upside down when Loreâs long lost childhood friend, Castor, reappears to warn her that he is looking for her. Terrified, Lore is then at first unwillingly thrust back into the world in which she was born-a world dominated by violence, bloodlines, and the Greek gods who are very much alive and out for vengeful retribution.Â
In a very exposition-dump heavy conversation, we learn that Lore is the last of Perseousâ line with the rest of her family having been horrifically murdered, that a week long event called the Agon occurs every seven years in which the original nine Greek gods or their reincarnated selves become mortal for seven days, and that a series of killing often happen because if you kill a Greek god you then become that Greek god as well as inhabit their powers, abilities, and immortality.Â
Well, until the next Agon that is.Â
The currently reincarnated God by the name of Wrath is attempting to end the Agon by killing all the other Gods, but in order to do it he needs to wield a special weapon called the Aegis.Â
Unfortunately, only the Perseides can wield this shield (for some reason) and thus, Wrath is out to get his hold on Lore as the last of her line so that he can bring this eons old competition to an end with himself as the sole victor and only remaining God.Â
Confused?
Iâd be surprised if you werenât.Â
Now, I love Greek mythology. Iâve read the classics and would say Iâm fairly up to date on the stories, the legends, the gods, and the stories they represent. Iâm not an expert, but I would say Iâm knowledgeable on who the major figures are and what they stood for.Â
I genuinely think this book would have been miserable for anyone that didnât know anything about Greek mythology.
Bracken does a terrible job of explaining what the hell is happening at any given point, and she often throws out allusions and references to Greek mythology without bothering to explain a single shred of information about it.Â
In addition, after this laughably and poorly explained world and plot at the beginning, it is almost never explained again. Itâs brought up, as are names and titles and weapons and relationships, but itâs never explained in a way thatâs feasibly understandable.Â
At the beginning of the novel Bracken lists who all the important characters are, their bloodlines, and their titles.
I soon figured out why, as every other sentence a name like Wrath or Reveler or Tidebringer or whoever was brought up, and it was impossible to keep track of so I didnât even bother.Â
Even Lore brings up that the names are ridiculous, which I appreciate, but the meta moment of clarity doesn't make it any better.Â
Also, what Lore and her friends get up to over 90% of the novel is a muddled mass of bewilderment.Â
Why do Lore and Castor and the others need to find Artemis? I donât know, but sure, whatever, sounds good. Why was Lore the last of her line again? Oh yeah, right, okay, I guess. Wait, Castor died? Oh, he didnât? Why not? Oh, weâre not going to explain it. Sure, sure.Â
Throughout this entire novel, what the characters are doing and what is happening is almost impossible to follow with the way it's presented and the way Bracken developed her world. I think this was a really cool idea that had very poor execution.Â
Points for the originality and the inclusion of Greek mythology, but all of the positives were taken away when that originality was flushed down the drain with a lack of explanation and logic.Â
Lore very much reminded me of a shoot-em up, bang-em up action movie. Almost every other chapter was some sort of super intense, super climactic fight scene, chase, theft, break-in, etc.Â
Now. I do think action scenes are hard to write and I think Bracken actually did an incredible job of writing action in a way that was entertaining and thrilling.Â
However, when the action takes place every ten pages it gets really old, really quick. Towards the end, I downright started skimming the fight scenes, because they lacked so little depth and stakes and we had read so much action at the end point that it had lost all vigor and vitality.Â
Continuing with the action movie metaphor, most action movies focus solely on the bright explosions and the crazy fight scenes as their selling point of the whole movie, often to the detriment of the characters, plot, and development.Â
Now, some people like this. I am not these people.Â
I find action movies boring as most of my enjoyment from consuming media comes from the characters and the developments they undergo.Â
My biggest criticism with Lore, other than the astonishing storytelling, is by far the characters. I just...didnât care. About any of them.Â
Bracken tried to make Lore come across as a strong, opinionated, fierce, angry female character and while sometimes she succeeded, more often than not I found Lore temperamental, aggravating, impulsive, selfish, and shallow.Â
Bracken very much invoked the tell-not-show strategy that makes any book hard to get through. While there were some decent moments of showing instead of just stating, more often than not, Bracken would tell us that Lore was strong by having other people say it or others calling her weak.Â
I appreciated Brackenâs feminist agenda and how strongly Lore felt about gender inequality, even if it was a bit heavy-handed at times. Still, I did appreciate this inclusion of civil rights on this front, even if some of the circumstances to incite it were ridiculous or over the top.Â
In addition, I hated that there was all this backstory that we were just told but not shown. Like in my last review of Wilder Girls, Lore suffers from an intrinsic failure of getting me onboard with these characters and their relationships by telling me how I should feel about them instead of exposing them through action.Â
I was told:
Lore and Castor haven't seen each other for seven years, but my gosh, Castor is just the best and is so beautiful. Ensue obligatory YA romance.Â
Lore has a best friend! Yeah. Her name is Iro. Here she is! Um. Okay. Why was this necessary?
Miles is just the coolest best friend ever. Like, look how cool and chill he is. How funny is it that he has no idea whatâs happening? Really not funny at all. He was a useless character used to build empty stakes.Â
The list goes on and on, but Bracken will throw out some sort of fact or relationship and just expect the reader to go âOkay!â Which. I didnât. On any of those occurrences.Â
Often Bracken would do this in the use of flashbacks at the most inopportune times (during a fight scene, after someone was injured, right before a huge revelation, etc). These flashbacks were the worst. I do not care for adolescent Lore and child Lore was somehow even worse.Â
The romance in this book, much like an action movie, is off to the side and really only there to fulfill the trope of having a romance.Â
Lore and Castor are boring. I donât know what else to say. Castor is too perfect to be likable and Lore is the opposite. Nothing about their romance was unique or well-crafted.Â
The kiss between Van and Miles I also saw coming a hundred miles away. I also thought it was pointless as Van and Miles had known each for six days and had had maybe two conversations. So. No. I didnât care at all about the romances.Â
It actually made me laugh and scoff simultaneously at the end when Lore is looking at Van, Castor, Iro and Miles and smiles because she realizes that these people are her family.Â
Ummm. Sorry?
Castor disappeared for seven years and youâve been reunited for seven days. Youâve hated Van your whole life until this week. You also havenât seen Iro in seven years and she tried to kill you at least twice in this book. Miles is...fine, but again useless. I donât even know why Bracken included him except to make Lore worry about him which she only did about half of the time.Â
Phew.Â
I know this review has come across largely negative, so this might be surprising, but I didnât hate it. It lacks substance and depth, but it was entertaining.Â
Just like an action movie.
If you want some hyped fights and a plot that really doesn't matter and characters that wonât stick with you, but a fast-paced narrative that keeps you on your toes nonetheless, then you would probably enjoy this.Â
Itâs like the equivalent of watching a James Bond movie or one of the millions of the Fast and Furious. Bracken tries to develop the characters, but at the end of the day, most of the story is made up of cool fights, magic, and weapons. If thatâs your speed then you would probably really love Lore.Â
Recommendation: Action, action, action. If you want some high intensity, get-your-blood-pumping enterprise then this is your novel. The writing is fluid, the adrenaline-inducing scenes are non-stop, and everything else falls to the backdrop of external fights and villainous monologues. If action is not your preferred genre, then your best left to get your Greek mythology needs from Percy Jackson or the Song of Achilles instead. Â
Score: 6/10

Welllp This is...Books. Lots and Lots of Books
That gif is something of a lie. Some of these books were not great. But! Some of them were very good! And some of them were marketed weird â seriously, what does qualify as YA â and some of them I read in, like, six hours and some of them I raged about for six hours after I finished them.
Or: 2020!Laura reverted to 2004!Laura and read just a lot of books and then her husband got her a Kindle and she read even more books and has thoughts on most of those books that she is now going to share with the internet while also making absurd category names. Note that these are only books I read for the first time this year. So, the list is missing some of the stuff I used as coping devices. ALSO SOME SPOILERS AHEAD, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
FAVORITE BOOKS THAT MADE A SHITTY YEAR SLIGHTLY BETTER AND ALSO LIKELY MADE ME SWOON A BIT
A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas
When nineteen-year-old huntress Feyre kills a wolf in the woods, a terrifying creature arrives to demand retribution. Dragged to a treacherous magical land she knows about only from legends, Feyre discovers that her captor is not truly a beast, but one of the lethal, immortal faeries who once ruled her world.
At least, he's not a beast all the time.
As she adapts to her new home, her feelings for the faerie, Tamlin, transform from icy hostility into a fiery passion that burns through every lie she's been told about the beautiful, dangerous world of the Fae. But something is not right in the faerie lands. An ancient, wicked shadow is growing, and Feyre must find a way to stop it, or doom Tamlin-and his world-forever.
â I kid you not, I had to do a lap around the apartment after reading the second book in this series. Why didnât I read this before? Why isnât there more fic? Why I am constantly falling for dark-haired sad dudes in love with their wives??? I cannot rec this series enough. Itâs got world building and found families, and that dark-haired sad dude, and magic and lore and banter, and itâs so good and I donât understand why it was marketed as YA. The literary world is weird, guys.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians (and the Heroes of Olympus) by Rick Riordan
Accompany the son of the sea god Poseidon and his other demigod friends as they go on a series of quests that will have them facing monsters, gods, and conniving figures from Greek mythology. Do they have what it takes to save the Olympians from an ancient enemy?
â Straight up, how did you guys cope with Percy and Annabeth when you were kids reading this? I would have been OBSESSED. Quarantine felt like the perfect time to finally read all of these books, and I know itâs sacrilegious to like Heroes of Olympus, but I might have liked parts of that series more? Just because it felt like they were older and I was super into Percabeth being properly in love. Also, now I get why everyone was so upset about the movies. Fair.
The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer
Humans and androids crowd the raucous streets of New Beijing. A deadly plague ravages the population. From space, a ruthless lunar people watch, waiting to make their move. No one knows that Earth's fate hinges on one girl. . . .Cinder, a gifted mechanic, is a cyborg. She's a second-class citizen with a mysterious past, reviled by her stepmother and blamed for her stepsister's illness. But when her life becomes intertwined with the handsome Prince Kai's, she suddenly finds herself at the center of an intergalactic struggle, and a forbidden attraction. Caught between duty and freedom, loyalty and betrayal, she must uncover secrets about her past in order to protect her world's future.
â Yet another YA series that I will admit to loving this year. Started off a little slow, but once the world building really got underway âand it gets underway â I was hooked. If I had read this at an age-appropriate time I would have been super in love Captain Carswell Thorne. I was still kind of in love with Captan Carswell Thorne. So it should come as no surprise that Cress was my favorite of the series, but I enjoyed the whole thing, really.
Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin
Two years ago, Louise le Blanc fled her coven and took shelter in the city of Cesarine, forsaking all magic and living off whatever she could steal. There, witches like Lou are hunted. They are feared. And they are burned. As a huntsman of the Church, Reid Diggory has lived his life by one principle: Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. But when Lou pulls a wicked stunt, the two are forced into an impossible situationâmarriage.Lou, unable to ignore her growing feelings, yet powerless to change what she is, must make a choice. And love makes fools of us all.
â YO. Y O. THIS WAS SO GOOD. World building! Magic! Marriage of convenience! Well-written enemies to lovers! As soon as I finished this, I bought the sequel. And then got upset the third book in the series isnât out yet! Thatâs a frustrating theme for me this year.
The Roommate by Rosie Danan
The Wheatons are infamous among the east coast elite for their lack of impulse control, except for their daughter Clara. She's the consummate socialite: over-achieving, well-mannered, predictable. But every Wheaton has their weakness. When Clara's childhood crush invites her to move cross-country, the offer is too much to resist. Unfortunately, it's also too good to be true.
After a bait-and-switch, Clara finds herself sharing a lease with a charming stranger. Josh might be a bit too perceptiveânot to mention handsomeâfor comfort, but there's a good chance he and Clara could have survived sharing a summer sublet if she hadn't looked him up on the Internet...
Once she learns how Josh has made a name for himself, Clara realizes living with him might make her the Wheaton's most scandalous story yet. His professional prowess inspires her to take tackling the stigma against female desire into her own hands. They may not agree on much, but Josh and Clara both believe women deserve better sex. What they decide to do about it will change both of their lives, and if they're lucky, they'll help everyone else get lucky too.
â I LOVED IT. L O V E D. As I told Justin âthere was more porn than I was expecting,â in that porn and the adult film industry was a legitimate plot point and not just a part of Joshâs character, but it was incredibly well written and interesting and I cared about the plot. Sometimes I also wanted to shake Clara, but that was kind of the point.
The Marriage Game by Sara Desai
After her life falls apart, recruitment consultant Layla Patel returns home to her family in San Francisco. But in the eyes of her father, who runs a Michelin starred restaurant, she can do no wrong. He would do anything to see her smile again. With the best intentions in mind, he offers her the office upstairs to start her new business and creates a profile on an online dating site to find her a man. She doesn't know he's arranged a series of blind dates until the first one comes knocking on her door...
As CEO of a corporate downsizing company Sam Mehta is more used to conflict than calm. In search of a quiet new office, he finds the perfect space above a cozy Indian restaurant that smells like home. But when communication goes awry, he's forced to share his space with the owner's beautiful yet infuriating daughter Layla, her crazy family, and a parade of hopeful suitors, all of whom threaten to disrupt his carefully ordered life.
As they face off in close quarters, the sarcasm and sparks fly. But when the battle for the office becomes a battle of the heart, Sam and Layla have to decide if this is love or just a game.
â More well-written enemies to lovers! Itâs possible! Seriously, the banter was so good. The kissing was even better. Ridiculous and interfering family is one of my favorite things, and this had it in SPADES. It also made me want to eat samosas, which is kind of my base setting, but I really wanted Indian food whenever I was reading this. Also, the end scene was so goddamn cute I cannot believe it actually happened.
Recipe for Persuasion by Sonali Dev
â The one that got away is one of my favorite tropes, and this modern version of Persuasion did it so well. Everyone was annoying, but in an almost understandable way that made me ache and I just wanted them TO KISS. And then they did kiss! And it was so good! Plus, at the risk of being a little self-indulgent, it was kind of Out of the Frying Pan esque and I liked that a lot. If there is a downside: itâs how quickly the relationship starts up again, like zero to 60 in two seconds flat, and that there were a lot of POVs. Which wouldnât have been an issue if theyâd been labeled, or werenât bouncing around the timeline randomly. Sometimes Iâd have to be likeâwait, whoâs talking about what?
Chef Ashna Raje desperately needs a new strategy. How else can she save her beloved restaurant and prove to her estranged, overachieving mother that she isn't a complete screw up? When she's asked to join the cast of Cooking with the Stars, the latest hit reality show teaming chefs with celebrities, it seems like just the leap of faith she needs to put her restaurant back on the map. She's a chef, what's the worst that could happen?Rico Silva, that's what.Being paired with a celebrity who was her first love, the man who ghosted her at the worst possible time in her life, only proves what Ashna has always believed: leaps of faith are a recipe for disaster.FIFA winning soccer star Rico Silva isn't too happy to be paired up with Ashna either. Losing Ashna years ago almost destroyed him. The only silver lining to this bizarre situation is that he can finally prove to Ashna that he's definitely over her.But when their catastrophic first meeting goes viral, social media becomes obsessed with their chemistry. The competition on the show is fierce...and so is the simmering desire between Ashna and Rico. Every minute they spend together rekindles feelings that pull them toward their disastrous past. Will letting go again be another recipe for heartbreakâor a recipe for persuasion...?
The Good Luck Charm by Helena Hunting
Lilah isn't sure what hurt worse: the day Ethan left her to focus on his hockey career or the day he came back eight years later. He might think they can pick up just where they left off, but she's no longer that same girl and never wants to be again.
Just when Lilah might finally be ready to let Ethan in, though, she finds out their reunion might have nothing to do with love and everything to do with improving his game. But Ethan's already lost her once, and even if it costs him his career, he'll do anything to keep from losing her again.
â HOCKEY ROM COM. HOCKEY. ROM. COM. Apparently this lady is regarded as the queen of âhockey romance,â which I kind of take offense to, but will give a pass on because this was a very cute book and everyone was cute in it and I was only marginally frustrated by those same people being idiots. As is required by rom coms. Hockey, or otherwise.
A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer
Fall in love, break the curse. It once seemed so easy to Prince Rhen, the heir to Emberfall. Cursed by a powerful enchantress to repeat the autumn of his eighteenth year over and over, he knew he could be saved if a girl fell for him. But that was before he learned that at the end of each autumn, he would turn into a vicious beast hell-bent on destruction. That was before he destroyed his castle, his family, and every last shred of hope.
Nothing has ever been easy for Harper. With her father long gone, her mother dying, and her brother barely holding their family together while constantly underestimating her because of her cerebral palsy, she learned to be tough enough to survive. But when she tries to save someone else on the streets of Washington, DC, she's instead somehow sucked into Rhen's cursed world.
Break the curse, save the kingdom. A prince? A monster? A curse? Harper doesn't know where she is or what to believe. But as she spends time with Rhen in this enchanted land, she begins to understand what's at stake. And as Rhen realizes Harper is not just another girl to charm, his hope comes flooding back. But powerful forces are standing against Emberfall . . . and it will take more than a broken curse to save Harper, Rhen, and his people from utter ruin.
â Beauty and the Beast AU!!! Fantasy! Magic! Romance! I loved this, even when Rhen was being a whiny idiot. But he was also cursed, so likeâfair. This dives into the politics of a cursed kingdom, puts a fun spin on the original fairy tale and also has a sequel. Which I read, and possibly enjoyed more. Only to realize the third book isnât published yet, and then got annoyed by that.
QUESTIONABLY-GOOD FREE FANTASY BOOKS ON AMAZON
The Silver and Orchids Collection by Shari L Tapscott
What happens when a feisty adventuress, a lord looking to make his own way in the world, and a handsome sea captain set out to find Kalaeâs rarest and most valuable flower?
Troubleâand lots of it.
â Snarky flirting! Adventure! Sword fights! Listen, this is not prize-winning fiction, but Lucia is a fun heroine, the rest of her adventure-seeking friends are an absolute delight and you donât have to think too much while reading it. All four books wrap up their individual storylines, but help set up the next one and while the ending felt a little forced (and way too quick) I didnât hate it enough to throw the Kindle across the room.
Forest of Firelight by Shari L. Tapscsott
After the sudden death of her brother, Princess Amalia is charged with what feels like an impossible taskâshe must choose the next king. Youthful thoughts of love are pushed aside as she accepts her fate, setting upon a quest throughout the kingdom to find a man worthy of her fatherâs throne.
Little does Amalia know, someone has already set his sights on her.
Rhys is a man of secrets, and his mission is simple: befriend the princess of Renove. Coax her to trust him, convince her to follow him.
Betray her when itâs time.
All goes according to plan until Rhys meets the princess. Amalia is a disaster. Never has he met someone so drawn to trouble. Never has he met someone so irritatingly likable.
Heâs not allowed to fall for her.
She could never entrust him with a crown.
But, unbeknownst to them, their unlikely partnership might be the key to saving their entire world from a darkness thatâs slowly creeping from the wounded earth that separates one kingdom from the next.
â FORBIDDEN LOVE! Itâs good! Real good! I read this whole series (or the three books in it, so far) in a questionably short amount of time. Again, not the deepest story, and Amalia is occasionally frustratingly dumb. While Rhys is also sort of all-knowing in that fantasy hero sort of way? Yâknow what I mean? Still, they banter very well, and eventually kiss even better.

Ash Princess by Laura Sebastian
Theodosia was six when her country was invaded and her mother, the Fire Queen, was murdered before her eyes. On that day, the Kaiser took Theodosia's family, her land, and her name. Theo was crowned Ash Princessâa title of shame to bear in her new life as a prisoner.
For ten years Theo has been a captive in her own palace. She's endured the relentless abuse and ridicule of the Kaiser and his court. She is powerless, surviving in her new world only by burying the girl she was deep inside.
Then, one night, the Kaiser forces her to do the unthinkable. With blood on her hands and all hope of reclaiming her throne lost, she realizes that surviving is no longer enough. But she does have a weapon: her mind is sharper than any sword. And power isn't always won on the battlefield.
For ten years, the Ash Princess has seen her land pillaged and her people enslaved. That all ends here.
â I wanted to love this series. So much so that I read the whole thing. All three books. And Iâm still not sure why. The world building, maybe. Which was very good, and the politics actually kept me interested, but every single character was the absolute worst and I kind of wanted them all to die. Thatâs not even an exaggeration. Spoiler, they didnât all die. I was only marginally disappointed.
Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller
When the ruthless Pirate King learns of a legendary treasure map hidden on an enemy ship, his daughter, Alosa, knows that there's only one pirate for the jobâherself. Leaving behind her beloved ship and crew, Alosa deliberately facilitates her own kidnapping to ensure her passage on the enemy ship. After all, who's going to suspect a seventeen-year-old girl locked in a cell? Then she meets the (surprisingly perceptive and unfairly attractive) first mate, Riden, who is charged with finding out all her secrets. Now it's down to a battle of wits and will... Can Alosa find the map and escape before Riden figures out her plan?
â Alosa was kind of the worst? Like, STRONG FEMALE CHARACTER who had to keep reminding you how strong she was because she would kill anyone, and had an all female pirate crew. And the whole time I was just like, ok...cool. Still, I read the sequel too and that was slightly better.
The Shadows Between Us by Tricia Levenseller
Alessandra is tired of being overlooked, but she has a plan to gain power:
1) Woo the Shadow King.
2) Marry him.
3) Kill him and take his kingdom for herself.
No one knows the extent of the freshly crowned Shadow King's power. Some say he can command the shadows that swirl around him to do his bidding. Others say they speak to him, whispering the thoughts of his enemies. Regardless, Alessandra knows what she deserves, and she's going to do everything within her power to get it.
But Alessandra's not the only one trying to kill the king. As attempts on his life are made, she finds herself trying to keep him alive long enough for him to make her his queenâall while struggling not to lose her heart. After all, who better for a Shadow King than a cunning, villainous queen?
â I cannot explain this book any way except to tell you it is so weird. Like, sometimes I remember I read this and all I can think is: why did this book happen? It felt like it started in the middle of the story, which is not a knock on the story itself, but mostly on the world building. Which was lacking to say the least. Also the resolution was super rushed and even more weird and I was likeâwhy does he like her??? I still donât know, honestly.
The Stars We Steal by Alexa Donne
Engagement season is in the air. Eighteen-year-old Princess Leonie "Leo" Kolburg, heir to a faded European spaceship, has only one thing on her mind: which lucky bachelor can save her family from financial ruin?
But when Leo's childhood friend and first love, Elliot, returns as the captain of a successful whiskey ship, everything changes. Elliot was the one who got away, the boy Leo's family deemed to be unsuitable for marriage. Now he's the biggest catch of the season and he seems determined to make Leo's life miserable. But old habits die hard, and as Leo navigates the glittering balls of the Valg Season, she finds herself falling for her first love in a game of love, lies, and past regrets.
â Another book whose lack of world building hurt it. Stuff just happened, and we were expected to understand it and be into it and I was neither. I had no reason to care about anyone in this book, especially Elliot who seemed like an asshole.
To Kill a Kingdom by Alexandra Christo
Princess Lira is siren royalty and the most lethal of them all. With the hearts of seventeen princes in her collection, she is revered across the sea. Until a twist of fate forces her to kill one of her own. To punish her daughter, the Sea Queen transforms Lira into the one thing they loathe mostâa human. Robbed of her song, Lira has until the winter solstice to deliver Prince Elian's heart to the Sea Queen and or remain a human forever. The ocean is the only place Prince Elian calls home, even though he is heir to the most powerful kingdom in the world. Hunting sirens is more than an unsavory hobbyâit's his calling. When he rescues a drowning woman in the ocean, she's more than what she appears. She promises to help him find the key to destroying all of sirenkind for goodâBut can he trust her? And just how many deals will Elian have to barter to eliminate mankind's greatest enemy?
â This book did not go the way I thought it was going to. Not a bad thing, but also not the best and the ending was...bleh. The middle, though? That was legit, and the action was good. I am always a fan of sword fights. Still, there was something that left me waiting for the final push towards great and it just never really came.
ROM-COMS WITH ONLY PASSABLY FRUSTRATING PLOTS AND GOOD KISSING
Party of Two by Jasmine Guillory
Dating is the last thing on Olivia Monroe's mind when she moves to LA to start her own law firm. But when she meets a gorgeous man at a hotel bar and they spend the entire night flirting, she discovers too late that he is none other than hotshot junior senator Max Powell. Olivia has zero interest in dating a politician, but when a cake arrives at her office with the cutest message, she can't resistâit is chocolate cake, after all.
Olivia is surprised to find that Max is sweet, funny, and nobleânot just some privileged white politician, as she assumed him to be. Because of Max's high-profile job, they start seeing each other secretly, which leads to clandestine dates and silly disguises. But when they finally go public, the intense media scrutiny means people are now digging up her rocky past and criticizing her job, even her suitability as a trophy girlfriend. Olivia knows what she has with Max is something special, but is it strong enough to survive the heat of the spotlight?
â It was cute. Max was occasionally an idiot. The kissing was legit. Most of their problems could have very easily been solved, but thatâs kind of this genreâs schtick.
The Worst Best Man by Mia Sosa
A wedding planner left at the altar? Yeah, the irony isn't lost on Carolina Santos, either. But despite that embarrassing blip from her past, Lina's offered an opportunity that could change her life. There's just one hitch... she has to collaborate with the best (make that worst) man from her own failed nuptials. Marketing expert Max Hartley is determined to make his mark with a coveted hotel client looking to expand its brand. Then he learns he'll be working with his brother's whip-smart, stunningâabsolutely off-limitsâex-fiancĂ©e. And she loathes him.If they can nail their presentation without killing each other, they'll both come out ahead. Except Max has been public enemy number one ever since he encouraged his brother to jilt the bride, and Lina's ready to dish out a little payback of her own.Soon Lina and Max discover animosity may not be the only emotion creating sparks between them. Still, this star-crossed couple can never be more than temporary playmates because Lina isn't interested in falling in love and Max refuses to play runner-up to his brother ever again...
â Once you got past the hooking up with your exâs brother thing, it was cute. Max was endearing in an earnest sort of way, even when Lina was STRONG FEMALE CHARACTER in a cliche sort of way. More solid kissing. Side note, why are so many rom com dudes named Max? Does it sound hip? Passably cool, but also approachable? Discuss.Â
Not that Kind of Guy by Andie J. Christopher
State attorney Bridget Nolan is successful in all aspects of her lifeâexcept romance. After breaking up with her longtime boyfriend, she's been slow to reenter the dating scene. To be honest, she has more important things to do like putting bad guys behind bars. But with her brother's wedding right around the corner, she suddenly needs a date and fast. Lucky for Bridget, the legal intern is almost done with his program.
Matt Kido is dumbstruck by Bridgetâtotal love at first sightâbut there's one problem. She's totally off-limits while she's his boss. But the moment he no longer reports to her, Matt asks her on a date. An impulsive decision takes them to Las Vegas where, as the saying goes, what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.
Unless you put a ring on it.
â Having written the âwake up in Vegas marriedâ trope before, I know itâs difficult to do right. Consentâs a thing, yâknow? And stuff gets dicy with forgotten memories, and all that, but mostly what kept me from truly loving this book was the intern thing. Donât date your interns guys, itâs weird and off-putting. Literally if heâd just been a junior partner, or a visiting partner or something else I would have been all in.
Meet Cute by Helena Hunting
Kailyn Flowers was always calm, rational, and controlledâuntil she ended up sprawled all over Daxton Hughes, the former actor she totally crushed on as a teenager. Then she did the unthinkable: She became a mortifying fangirl in five seconds flat, which may or may not have included professing her undying love. And oddly, he didn't run away. In fact, their meet cute led to a friendship she never saw coming. Of course, she never saw his betrayal coming, either...Now Dax needs her help. As guardian to his thirteen-year-old sister, he's in way over his head. And though Kailyn hasn't forgiven Dax, she isn't heartless enough to make him fend for himself, either. Soon their friendly meetings turn into flirty dinner dates, and Kailyn can feel their chemistry is as explosive as ever. But how can she possibly let down her guard again to a guy who has heartbreak written all over him?
â Once again here for the one that got away trope, even if this comes with dead parents and some sad storylines. It still managed to be cute. Everyone was cute in it. Occasionally Daxton was a dick. As rom com male leads are apt to be.
If I Never Met You by Mhairi McFarlane
If faking love is this easy... how do you know when it's real? When her partner of over a decade suddenly ends things, Laurie is left reelingânot only because they work at the same law firm and she has to see him every day. Her once perfect life is in shambles and the thought of dating again in the age of Tinder is nothing short of horrifying. When news of her ex's pregnant girlfriend hits the office grapevine, taking the humiliation lying down is not an option. Then a chance encounter in a broken-down elevator with the office playboy opens up a new possibility.Jamie Carter doesn't believe in love, but he needs a respectable, steady girlfriend to impress their bosses. Laurie wants a hot new man to give the rumor mill something else to talk about. It's the perfect proposition: a fauxmance played out on social media, with strategically staged photographs and a specific end date in mind. With the plan hatched, Laurie and Jamie begin to flaunt their new couple status, to the astonishmentâand jealousyâof their friends and colleagues. But there's a fine line between pretending to be in love and actually falling for your charming, handsome fake boyfriend...
â FAKE DATING THAT LEADS TO REAL FEELINGS. The ex-boyfriend was an assssss, the fake boyfriend was charming, everything was good AND THEN WE GOT TO THE END. Which felt more than a little rushed, unexpected and not really in line with the rest of the book?? Give âem a slightly better, in-character ending, and I would have been sold.
BOOKS THAT I WAS LIKE...EH, OK
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
The circus arrives without warning. No announcements precede it. It is simply there, when yesterday it was not. Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des RĂȘves, and it is only open at night.
But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway: a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors. Unbeknownst to them both, this is a game in which only one can be left standing. Despite the high stakes, Celia and Marco soon tumble headfirst into love, setting off a domino effect of dangerous consequences, and leaving the lives of everyone, from the performers to the patrons, hanging in the balance.
â I think this book was too smart for me. The prose was gorgeous, and the whole thing was very pretty and I definitely swooned when Marco said he wished for Celia. And yet. By the end I was like...eh, ok. Maybe it was the timeline? Jumping around, or how little dialogue there was. I wanted to like it all so badly, and Iâm just not sure I did.

She wants nothing to do with another man in the limelight, but she's still got to whip him into shape. Can Carter convince Tori he's worth the threat to her privacy that comes with dating a famous actor, or will Tori chisel him down to nothing before he even gets the chance?
â Dudes have gotta stop lying about who they are. Itâs not a great trope. Other than that, the kissing was good. The romance was like...eh. I honestly donât remember much else.
Twice in a Blue Moon by Christina Lauren
During a whirlwind two-week vacation abroad, Sam and Tate fell for each other in only the way that first loves do: sharing all of their hopes, dreams, and deepest secrets along the way. Sam was the first, and only, person that Tateâthe long-lost daughter of one of the world's biggest film starsâever revealed her identity to. So when it became clear her trust was misplaced, her world shattered for good.
Fourteen years later, Tate, now an up-and-coming actress, only thinks about her first love every once in a blue moon. When she steps onto the set of her first big break, he's the last person she expects to see. Yet here Sam is, the same charming, confident man she knew, but even more alluring than she remembered. Forced to confront the man who betrayed her, Tate must ask herself if it's possible to do the wrong thing for the right reason... and whether "once in a lifetime" can come around twice.
â This book was...weird. The early romance was wonderful and delightful, but then shit hit the fan and Sam and Tate are adults and...weird. Like, I cannot come up with another word for it. Also, they didnât really talk much? As adults? Working on the same movie set? W e i r d.
I Owe You One by Sophie Kinsella

Itâs simply not in Fixieâs nature to say no to people. So when a handsome stranger in a coffee shop asks her to watch his laptop for a moment, she not only agreesâshe ends up saving it from certain disaster. To thank Fixie for her quick thinking, the computerâs owner, Sebastian, an investment manager, scribbles an IOU on a coffee sleeve and attaches his business card. Fixie laughs it offâsheâd never actually claim an IOU from a stranger. Would she?
But then Fixieâs childhood crush, Ryan, comes back into her life, and his lack of a profession pushes all of Fixieâs buttons. As always, she wants nothing for herselfâbut sheâd love Seb to give Ryan a job. No sooner has Seb agreed than the tables are turned once more and a new series of IOUs between Seb and Fixieâfrom small favors to life-changing momentsâensues. Soon Fixie, Ms. Fixit for everyone else, is torn between her family and the life she really wants. Does she have the courage to take a stand? Will she finally grab the life, and love, she really wants?
â Letâs be upfront, Iâve read a lot of Sophie Kinsella in my life, and more often than not I enjoy what she writes. I mostly did here. It was a book. With obvious rom com problems, that could have very easily been solved, but it wasnât horrible. So, that was good, I guess.
The Wedding Party by Jasmine Guillory
Maddie and Theo have two things in common:
1. Alexa is their best friend
2. They hate each other
After an "oops, we made a mistake" night together, neither one can stop thinking about the other. With Alexa's wedding rapidly approaching, Maddie and Theo both share bridal party responsibilities that require more interaction with each other than they're comfortable with. Underneath the sharp barbs they toss at each other is a simmering attraction that won't fade. It builds until they find themselves sneaking off together to release some tension when Alexa isn't looking, agreeing they would end it once the wedding is over. When it's suddenly pushed up and they only have a few months left of secret rendezvouses, they find themselves regretting that the end is near. Two people this different can't possibly have a connection other than the purely physical, right?
But as with any engagement with a nemesis, there are unspoken rules that must be abided by. First and foremost, don't fall in love.
â Eh, this book happened. I still have no idea why they couldnât be together from the get. Obstacles for the sake of plot, I guess. Also political side stories? I donât know, guys.
WEIRD POST-ENDING FEELINGS WERE INDUCED
Beach Read by Emily Henry
Augustus Everett is an acclaimed author of literary fiction. January Andrews writes bestselling romance. When she pens a happily ever after, he kills off his entire cast.
They're polar opposites.
In fact, the only thing they have in common is that for the next three months, they're living in neighboring beach houses, broke, and bogged down with writer's block.
Until, one hazy evening, one thing leads to another and they strike a deal designed to force them out of their creative ruts: Augustus will spend the summer writing something happy, and January will pen the next Great American Novel. She'll take him on field trips worthy of any rom-com montage, and he'll take her to interview surviving members of a backwoods death cult (obviously). Everyone will finish a book and no one will fall in love. Really.
â Listen, I enjoyed this a lot. For the most part. It was funny, and introspective in a way that didnât make me want to gag too much, and I wanted to defend Januaryâs love of love with everything in me. But, then itâended. And it was like...all tied up with this nice little ribbon and happily ever after, and I was like...oh, ok. Part of me that it was glad it ended like that, mostly because of who I am as a person, but the rest of me was also confused that after everything January and Augustus had been through and how messy their lives were it could just get all wrapped up in this HEA.
HITTING JUST A BIT TOO CLOSE TO HOME
Spoiler Alert by Olivia Dade
Marcus Caster-Rupp has a secret. The world may know him as Aeneas, star of the biggest show on television, but fanfiction readers call him something else: Book!AeneasWouldNever. But if anyone discovered his online persona, he'd be finished in Hollywood.April Whittier has secrets of her own. A hardcore Lavinia fan, she's long hidden her fanfic and cosplay hobbies from her "real life"âbut not anymore. â Here for plus-size heroines who get the guy and donât have their (entire) storyline defined by their looks. Less here for the weird fandom culture, the ensuing second-hand embarrassment that came from that and the thankfulness that both Colin OâDonoghue and Bob Morley appear to be happily married so it seems very unlikely theyâre writing fic about their characters under pseudonyms. Stop using Ao3 in actual published stories 2k4ever.
RAGE-INDUCING BOOKS OF ABSOLUTE FURY
The Friend Zone by Abby Jimenez
Kristen Peterson doesn't do drama, will fight to the death for her friends, and has no room in her life for guys who just don't get her. She's also keeping a big secret: facing a medically necessary procedure that will make it impossible for her to have children.Planning her best friend's wedding is bittersweet for Kristen â especially when she meets the best man, Josh Copeland. He's funny, sexy, never offended by her mile-wide streak of sarcasm, and always one chicken enchilada ahead of her hangry. Even her dog, Stuntman Mike, adores him. The only catch: Josh wants a big family someday. Kristen knows he'd be better off with someone else, but as their attraction grows, it's harder and harder to keep him at arm's length. The Friend Zone will have you laughing one moment and grabbing for tissues the next as it tackles the realities of infertility and loss with wit, heart, and a lot of sass.
â LISTEN THERE ARE SPOILERS HERE, BUT I FEEL LIKE YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THEM BECAUSE THIS BOOK IS A SECRET GUT PUNCH AND PEOPLE SHOULD BE AWARE. Not only is infertility, like, the defining theme of this book, but the BEST FRIEND DIES. Justâdies. Itâs horrible. Absolutely God awful depressing. And for a second he looks like he wonât, and itâll be fine, but then it is not and heâs just D E A D. I know, I know that sets up the sequel, but this was so goddamn heavy in an unsuspecting way that I have absolutely no intention of reading the next one.
Well Met by Jen DeLuca
Emily knew there would be strings attached when she relocated to the small town of Willow Creek, Maryland, for the summer to help her sister recover from an accident, but who could anticipate getting roped into volunteering for the local Renaissance Faire alongside her teenaged niece? Or that the irritating and inscrutable schoolteacher in charge of the volunteers would be so annoying that she finds it impossible to stop thinking about him?
The faire is Simon's family legacy and from the start he makes clear he doesn't have time for Emily's lighthearted approach to life, her oddball Shakespeare conspiracy theories, or her endless suggestions for new acts to shake things up. Yet on the faire grounds he becomes a different person, flirting freely with Emily when she's in her revealing wench's costume. But is this attraction real, or just part of the characters they're portraying?
This summer was only ever supposed to be a pit stop on the way to somewhere else for Emily, but soon she can't seem to shake the fantasy of establishing something more with Simon or a permanent home of her own in Willow Creek.
â FUCK THIS BOOK. And fuck Simon, specifically. Oh, you have a sad story? Cool, youâre still a dick. He was a dick. Listen, I know enemies to lovers is a hard trope to write, but itâs even harder to accept when those enemies just announce I LIKED YOU THE WHOLE TIME and then everyone starts ripping off their clothes. No, itâs dumb. I hate it. Apparently thereâs a sequel to this book. Maybe thatâs better.

But with every clash, there's also an undeniable chemistry. When an even bigger threat to their business comes to town, they're forced to call a temporary time-out on their own war and work together. And the more time Blaire spends getting to know the real Ronan, the more she wonders if it's possible to have her cupcake and eat it too.
â Listen, I wanted to like this one. There were plenty other Helena Hunting books on this list, so likeâI donât hate her. I just hate poorly executed enemies to lovers plot lines. Give me at least one moment where they are interested in each other aside from just being attracted to each other. Also: Stop Having Dudes Be Dicks Because Of Their Sad Backstory 2k4ever.

5. Can I request Percy's POV for the opening scene in Chapter 2 of Homeward, where Ramsey has dinner with Percy and Molly? Or would doing so spoil the dramatic effect of later on? The scene is so well-written I feel the other POV isn't needed to understand what's going on, but it would be fun to read nonetheless. :)
Good evening. A fantastic request! I am a very slow writer, but here is the scene in full in Percy's POV. You will notice it is nearly twice as long due to the wordy and rambling nature of Percy's existence (and hence, one of the reasons Homeward is from Ramsey's point of view) and also that it is very much unedited. It was fun to explore the conversation Percy has on the phone with her mother (during which I believe you will cringe several times at both of their lack of tact and general ineptness. ) It is sort of not canon as the phone call lasts a little bit longer than it does in the actual story, but I love Liz and Arthur too much to not have fun with them when I can. Story: Homeward Word Count: 4,045
Ramsey, Percy had noticed, was over for dinner more often recently. She did not mind this. Quite the opposite. She often struggled with portion sizes when cooking now that she had to cook for more than one person (somehow, simply doubling the amount she used to make never worked out like it mathematically should have) and there was always enough to feed him. He also made for good company for Molly, who Percy suspected, despite how quiet she could be around others, loved having him over for the noise and excitement he brought to the usually quiet apartment. It was important for her to have good adult role models, and the imperfect Ramsey who was trying to make up for his difficult past was, in her opinion, a much better fit than the rambunctious Giovanni, whose moral code was vague at best and dangerous at worst. Also, admittedly, she simply liked him around, which was probably reason enough. So, no, she most certainly didnât mind that he came over more often and would stay for dinner. It was something friends did, she was sure. Well, she was almost sure.
Today, he especially had a good reason to come over. Mollyâs bedroom had been irking her lately. Percy was perfectly capable of painting wallsâ in fact, she was excellent at painting wallsâ but she was not an artist, and it was a strict difference. Although she could quite easily and quite neatly paint a green coat, or even perhaps some sort of dual coloured coat, given the proper masking tape, she could not paint bears. Mollyâs old bedroom, she had noticed the only time sheâd been in it, had bears on the wall. Teddy bears, specifically. And given that Molly was nearing adolescence, Percy wanted to take full advantage of the age where she would still enjoy such frivolous things and recreate them. Ramsey was also very idle, she found. When he was not working, he was drawing or sleeping from what she could gather (the latter much more so than the former) and it seemed to be putting a âdampenerâ on his mood. Paying him to paint Mollyâs bedroom (with her assistance, of course) seemed like a good way to kill two birds with one stone. Not that she would ever hurt a bird, of course. Well, not unless it was a dangerous individual that had to be taken care of. Perhaps she wouldnât think about it anymore.
The spaghetti was a little salty. She hoped neither of them minded. It sort of reminded her of buttered noodles, which she mostly knew as a childhood treat (emphasis on treat, they were certainly not good for her) and as such she didnât dislike the taste, but still. âThanks again for painting my room, Mr Murdoch.â As Percy scrutinized her plate, Molly had taken to thanking Ramsey for his work. She was a very polite young girl. Very admirable. It was incredible how well-raised she was, all things considered, but Percy thought that simply spoke to how wonderful Molly was, and was not reflective of anything her father did for her.
Ramsey waved her gratitude off humbly. âEh, it wasnât nothing. Sânice to get out of the old apartment anyway.â
Percy chose to ignore his double negative. It was confusing, but he did it a lot and sheâd managed to get used to it. She did not understand why he found it difficult to accept thanks, however. She quickly patted her mouth with her napkin (dinner etiquette was very important) so she could show her shared appreciation. âWhether it was nothing or not, we appreciate your effort.â Of course, she knew it probably was nothing to him. After all, he was an artist of very high caliber. But that didnât change the fact he had put time and energy into doing it.
Instead of accepting her thanks, once more Ramsey chose to deflect, pointing his fork at her. âYouâre just sayinâ that âcause you couldnât do it yourself.â Before Percy could debate this, however, Ramsey decided to go for two blows. He leaned in towards Molly, âPercy canât draw for snacks,â and Molly found this funny enough. Percy watched them with interest, and then they turned and watched her with interest. Ah. Right. She was supposed to respond to that with something equally clever yet jocund, as was expected. âItâs true, I am no artist. However, I am also not a con-artist.â She didnât quite understand what was so funny about two people mocking each other repeatedly, but Molly seemed to find it humorous and it was all very lighthearted so she decidedly went along with it (though she found her own wit was much better suited for one-line statements than battles of insults.)
Molly gasped and covered her mouth. Presumably, this was jokingly. Percy doubted what she said was all that bad. âSheâs got you there, Mr Murdoch. Are you just gonna take that?â
Ramsey seemed pleased with himself. âOh, was that supposed to be a burn?â He took a moment to think, âHeh, well, I may be a criminal, but at least Iâm not a nerd.â Molly made noises with her mouth that Percy couldnât quite decipher as she frowned. She never quite understood the word as an insult, after all, âThere is nothing laughable about being well-educated.â
Ramsey apparently took her defensive statement as his victory. âOh, I see,â he said casually, âSo you can give it, but ya canât take it, huh?â
âI can take you back to prison, Ramsey,â Percy blurted out. Oh. She had not even thought about it before saying it. Ramsey seemed equally surprised, coughing on the spaghetti in his mouth as Molly laughed. Admittedly, it felt good to be in on the joke. She smiled at him to clarify no ill will and he looked bashfully back down at his plate. She took it that this meant she had won, for once. Excellent.
Suddenly, Ramsey recovered from his defeat and looked up. âYou excited to go to Marchpoint for Christmas, Molly?â
Molly beamed. âSure! Marchpoint is really pretty, and Percyâs parents are really nice.â It was reassuring to know that Molly truly did enjoy visiting themâ her parents had⊠overwhelming and very different reactions to the prospect of her adopting a child, and for a little bit Percy was very worried that they would make Molly uncomfortable, or perhaps regardless Molly simply wouldnât like them. Alas, it worked out the complete opposite. Percy hesitated to use the word âobsessedâ, but her parents were most certainly passionate in their approach to Molly in a way she wasnât expecting. Well, her father she should have expected, but her mother? It really did go to show how the people you love can always surprise you.
Ramsey, meanwhile, seemed content to speculate about her hometownâs nature. âHeh, sounds like one a those little fancy holiday towns.â Admittedly, he was not entirely wrong. He had good sense about those kinds of things, Percy supposed. âMarchpoint,â he repeated, scratching his goatee. Very idly, Percy wondered what it felt like.
âItâs pretty fancy! Percyâs parents live in one of those big country homes with a porch and huge backyard, and all the little town shops look like theyâre from the sixties. Itâs so much quieter than the city.â She could not grow a beard herself, but she remembered how her fatherâs felt whenever he shaved it. Textured, bristly. Ramseyâs face fell. âWhatâd I do? I got something on me?â He looked down at his shirt to check. Hm. Apparently, she had been staring. And also not listening, as she couldnât seem to remember what it was they had been talking about. She decidedly corrected both of those âfaux pasâs.
âMy apologies. I wasâŠâ She did not want him to feel self-conscious, â... lost in thought. What were we speaking about?â
Ramsey smiled at her cheekily. âTalkinïżœïżœ about your fancy pants hometown, Sparky.â
âAh, yes.â How could she have forgotten? âMarchpoint certainly has its charms. However, I prefer to be in the city where I am needed.â She frowned, thinking about just how useless sheâd be somewhere so quiet. âIndeed, such a sleepy town has no need for my unforgiving sense of justice.â
Molly lifted some spaghetti in her fork. âItâs nice for the holidays though!â
âJustice doesnât take holidays,â Percy reminded her seriously.
âAlright, Judge Judy, letâs not bring work to the table,â Ramsey scolded her. Percy wasnât quite sure who Judge Judy was, but she had to admit he was right. She went back to eating her spaghetti.
Molly looked at him. âWhatâre you doing for the holidays, Mr Murdoch?â
Ramsey, from what Percy could tell, was not expecting to be asked this question. Percy realized she wasnât sure what he was doing herself. âMe? Uh, nothinâ, kid.â Had she never asked him? Ah. Shoot. She hadnât. Sheâd try to remember to do that next year. âMy familyâs too far away and small to bother visiting every year. I like to keep it to myself.â Percy couldnât pretend she wouldnât do the same if Marchpoint was further away, but it surprised her that Ramsey, given his sensitive nature, would feel similarly.
âHow practical!â
Molly did not seem as pleased with this as she was. âThatâs sad, Mr Murdoch. Donât you want to be around people during the holidays?â
Hm. Molly offered an interesting point. Ramsey was prone to bouts of loneliness. She watched him carefully as he attempted to shrug off the question. âNah, Iâm good. Not too into heavily commercialised stuff. Just another day off to me.â Percy was always the best with conversations but she was certainly familiar with interrogations and she liked to think she knew a lie when she saw one. Such a lackadaisy approach to such an important time seemed so unlike him.
âWhile I usually like to respect the wishes of others, I would not like to think of you spending this time alone, Ramsey. The holidays are a chance to reconnect and spend time with the people you love and care about. They are not, as you say, just âanother day off.ââ
Ramsey frowned at her, but Molly spoke first. âYou should come with us to Marchpoint! Iâm sure no one would mind.â Hm. Huh. Percy blinked. And then she blinked again, because for some reason the first blink hadnât cleared her mind. She could feel her eyebrows furrowing as her brain went over the statement. Ramsey. At her family home. Staying with them. For the holidays. In Marchpoint. With her parents. She couldnât even picture it. Mollyâs quiet voice broke her out of her stupor. âUhm, would that be okay, Percy?â
Percy gave blinking one last try to see if it would work. Sheâd have to give an answerâ that was how questions worked. One person asks a question and the other answers, unless the question is rhetorical or sarcastic, something that was clarified by tone indicators. Mollyâs question was neither, so she had to answer it. Would it be okay? Well, sheâd have to ask her mother. Yes. That was the answer. Sheâd have to ask. âIâd have to call Mother,â she said, and then quickly to reassure them both, âBut I donât see why not.â Smile. Yes. That was a good ideaâ smiling made people more comfortable. She was nailing this.
Ramsey seemed upset. She was not nailing this. âLook, I donât wanna be burdeninâ a buncha strangers all out of pityââ Well, that was simply ridiculous. âRamsey,â she interrupted him, âwould you like to come?â She waited expectantly.
He stared back at her. âI guess. I mean, if the foodâs free.â A jest, she assumed, based on the wink. âBut I donât wanna come if Iâm just gonna be in the way is all.â Hm. Well, she wouldnât force him if he believed he would be out of place.
âI understand, Mr Murdoch,â Molly reassured him quietly, âI just thought itâd be nice to have another person Iâm really comfortable around going to meet so many new people⊠But if you donât want to, itâs okay.â She smiled at him. Hm. Percy hadnât even thought about that. Molly was quite shy, and while her family wasnât large by any means, they were quite loud, even for Percy sometimes.
Ramsey put both of his hands up as though he was showing he had no weapons. âAlright, alright! Iâll come if Iâm able, just stop lookinâ at me with those big ole puppy dog eyes. Geez, I canât stand it.â Oh, that was good. Ack, but it was so soonâ sheâd call her mother now, just in case. Her mother wasnât fond of late changes to plans. Percy pulled her phone out of her pocket. If only theyâd come up with this last week.
âExcuse me,â she said as she stood up, not wishing to neglect her table manners. The phone stopped ringing and her motherâs voice replaced the sound.
âHello?â
âHello, mother.â Percy looked over to the door to the hall. Perhaps this was a conversation best had in private.
âHello, Percival.â Her mother paused. âLovely evening.â
As Percy made her way to the hall she glanced out the window. The sky was clear. âWhy, yes, it is a lovely evening.â There was a small pause as Percy closed the door behind her and walked to her bedroom. She didnât particularly like phone calls. Well, she didnât hate them, but she most certainly found them more difficult than a simple face-to-face conversation or a quick text.
âWhy are you calling during dinner?â her mother asked gruffy.
Oh, had she been waiting for her to speak? See, if they had been face-to-face, that would have been more obvious. âAh, yes. About Molly and I staying overââ
âWhat, youâre not coming anymore?â
Percy glanced at the phone in surprise. âWhat?â
âIs that Percy? Is she not coming?â she heard her father say in the background. Oh, dear.
âArthur, Iâm on the phone,â her mother snapped at him.
Her father did not seem to notice. âIf itâs Percy, tell her I said hello, and that Iâd be very disappointed if she and Molly werenât coming up!â âYeah, yeah.â There was a sigh. âHe says hello. And that you better be coming up. â
Percy nodded as though they could see her. âWeâre still coming.â âTheyâre still coming, Arthur,â It sounded as though her mother had covered the mic, and then like she had taken her hand off of it again. âOkay, so then, what are you calling for?â
Percy idly placed her hand on the cool frame of her bed. âItâs just, well, I have this friendââ âYou do?â She sounded surprised. Had Percy never mentioned Ramsey to her before?
âYes.â No, she hadnât, she realised. Odd.
âAlright, well, what about this friend?â
âHeââ
âHe doesnât need money, does he?â
âWhat? Uhm, no, mother. He doesnât needâŠâ Percy paused, âWell, I donât believe he needs money. I suppose he could.â It was certainly possible. Ramsey had obviously gotten in with bad crowds before and old habits did not die easy. It was entirely in the realm of plausibility that he had gone out and gotten into money troubleâ or, alternatively, an old mistake had come back to haunt him despite his current good nature.
âWell, did he ask you for money?â
âHm?â Sheâd almost forgotten she was on the phone. âOh, no. No, he didnât.â
âGood. None of your business then.â Ah, her mother was correct. It was rude of her to speculate like that.
âYes, I suppose youâre right.â
â... Percival.â
âYes?â
âWhy are you calling me.â
âOh, right.â She almost forgot what sheâd called about. Her mother had that effect on people. âYes. Well, this friendââ âOh! Ask her if itâs Ramsey.â Ah. Her father again.
Her mother sounded mostly confused, and a little irritated. âWho?â
âRamsey! Her friend, is it Ramsey?â Percy found herself rubbing the frame. Smooth, glossy wood. It felt nice.
âFor godâs sakeâ Percival, your father wants to know if itâs... Ramsey.â
âAh, tell him yes, it is.â âIt is.â The mic muffled again. âOh! Is he alright?â âArthur, getting this conversation to end is like trying to get blood out of a rock and youâre making it harderââ âAlright, alright! Donât raise your voice, Liz.â Her mother audibly groaned. âDid you at least tell her I said hello?â âI already told her! Just be quiet and eat your roast beef, you big lug.â A pause. âAre you still there Percival?â âYes.â
âAlright. Tell you what, because my dinner is getting cold and this phone call is driving me to the edge. You have three sentences to tell me whatâs wrong or Iâm hanging up. Go.â
âOh, er. Wellââ âThat was one. You have two now.â
Shoot. Percy took a moment to think about the clearest and most direct two sentences possible. âMy friend Ramsey has nowhere to go for the holidays,â she said slowly, âCould he stay with us?â
âOh, is that it?â Percy wasnât the best judge of tone but her mother almost sounded disappointed. There was another pause, slightly longer than any of the ones before, as though she was taking this information in. âHm,â she said finally, âHe from the streets?â Percy thought of Ramseyâs little apartment. âNo.â âHe dangerous? Violent? Crazy?â âNo.â Ramsey wasnât any of those things even when he was a criminal. Sheâd begin to make her way back to the kitchen, given that the conversation was nearing itâs close.
âDrat. Well, whatever. Sure, sure. He can come.â
Percy opened the door to the hall and closed it behind her. âThank you,â she said quickly.
âYeah, yeah, well. Iâm not a fiend, Percival. Besides, house wonât be full anyway. You know your uncle isnât coming up this year, donât you?â She walked into the kitchen, where Ramsey and Molly still sat at the table.
âYes. I know.â
âFunny, isnât it? Son finally decides to come home and then itâs all about staying local after coming up the twenty-five yearsâ sânot like we donât have room for his brat either. That uncle of yours is a strange man.â
âIndeed.â
âAnyway. Get lost so I can eat.â There was a slight pause. âLove ya.â Percy smiled pleasantly. âGoodbye.â
The phone clicked. Her mother had hung up. She glanced up to her company (she hadnât realized it, but apparently she had been staring at the floor the whole time) and they stared back at her eagerly.
Molly leaned forward. âWhatâd she say?â Their plates were emptyâ they mustâve finished eating.
Percy hummed, trying to replay the conversation. âWell, first she said âHello.â Then, âItâs a lovely evening.â Then, âWhy are you calling during dinner?â Thenââ
âI think she meant, whatâs the verdict, chief?â Ramsey said quickly. He looked very pink. âEr, am I coming or going?â
Ah, there he went again with his nonsensical word choice. Percy rubbed her chin. âBoth options youâve given me suggest you are allowed. Which do I pick if youâre not?â
Molly groaned. âPercy...â
âMy apologies.â Perhaps she was poking too much fun. âYou may come, Ramsey.â He seemed appropriately relieved.
âYes!â Molly exclaimed, and then, in a fit of excitement that was completely unexpected, jumped up to embrace her. Percy could not hide her surprise as her small arms squeezed her. Still, she smiled, wrapping one arm around her ward and using the other to give her a small pat on the head. âThanks Percy.â The sound rippled through her shirt. It felt very nice.
âOf course.â Hm. What time was it? Molly always did her homework at eight. Percy glanced at the clock on the wall. âDo you have homework to do?â
âAck!â Molly suddenly let go and raced to her room. Percy watched her go. She was a very kind child. It was lovely how much she cared for Ramsey. It only just occurred to her that perhaps Molly was not entirely selfish in her want for him to be there. Percy just felt privileged to know her, sometimes. It felt silly, given Mollyâs age, but it was true.
Speaking of Ramsey, he stood up from the table and Percy looked over to him. âYeah, uh, thanks, Percâ,â he said softly, âYou really didnât have to.â
Percy smiled at him. He was very sweet for a reformed criminal. She could appreciate that this was probably very difficult for him. Ah, she should reassure him of his use. âI think your presence will be good for her. It can be quite overwhelming meeting new people, especially for children.â
He simply shrugged. âEh, maybe.â He glanced towards the door to the hall and back at her. âI guess Iâd better get going.â
It was always a shame to see him go, but he had his own business to get to. Expecting him to stay forever would be selfish and immature, and Percy was neither of these things when she could fight it. âOf course. Thank you for joining us, Ramsey. Itâs always a pleasure.â She started collecting the plates from dinner. Sheâd wash them now. She didnât like leaving dishes in the sink.
Ramsey did not leave. Instead, he took the plates from her hands and grinned at her. âHeh, yeah, well, thatâs me. Iâm pretty great company,â he said as he brought them to the sink. He smirked then, putting a finger to his cheek. âAnd Iâm pretty too.â
While he did that, she made her way to the drawer to get her rubber gloves. Her aunt always said washing dishes without them made your hands dry, though, if Percy were being honest, she never really thought about why she wore them. Habit.
âVery,â she said to entertain him. âThank you very much for your assistance.â
âAw, you think Iâm pretty?â Percy blinked and looked over at him. He wiggled his eyebrows (provocatively?) Hm.
She looked away, clearing her throat and pulling on her gloves. âHow is the apartment treating you, Ramsey?â She turned the tap to run the warm water. As Ramsey spoke, she grabbed the washing up liquid.
He was leaning against the counter. âFine. Kinda small.â He shrugged at her. âI like the TV. Free cable.â
Percy smiled, procuring a sponge from a dish beside the sink. âIâm glad itâs to your liking. Perhaps if you keep working hard, you will be able to move somewhere bigger.â She started cleaning the dishes. Pasta luckily did not stain, and it did not take long to clean three plates. When she got to the last one, she glanced over at him again. He was⊠still not leaving. How did she approach that? On one hand, she didnât want him to feel like he had to leave, because he did not. On the other, she couldnât simply say nothing, either. After all, heâd said he was leaving. Perhaps he wanted to talk to her about something? She rinsed the plate off and stuck it in the drying rack with the others. Ramsey glanced at her and she cleared her throat. âWell,â she started, âThere is no point prolonging the inevitable.â
He pushed off the counter. âYeah. Thanks again for dinner, and, uh,â he coughed, âBringing me along for the holidays.â Percy smiled at him.
âGoodbye, Ramsey. Until tomorrow.â She turned back to the sink and began taking off her gloves, but he didnât leave. Should she say something? Maybe he truly wasnât alright. âAre you not leaving?â Ah, now that she said it, perhaps that was a little blunt.
âYeah, yeah, sorry. I was just, uh..." he looked at her desperately but she did not know what to say. "Right, uh, seeya.â He gave her a little wave and she returned it, but as he left Percy couldnât help but feel a little guilty for her lacking approach. She shouldâve asked if he was okay, maybe even if he wanted to stay a little longer, talk about something. She knew he didnât particularly like being aloneâ perhaps going home was hard for him? Ah. Friendship was difficult and unfamiliar territory. She knew he wasnât doing as well as he couldâve been, but she didnât want to freak him out by pushing him too hard.
Well. One thing at a time.

Book Recs
Hello! so for my first post, I'll recommend some books, so y'all can have a closer look at some fandoms I'll post about! enjoy!!
1. Â
Harry Potter By J.K. Rowling is definitely an interesting, well-written series! there are 7 books however, and the books get bigger as the series progresses. It's sometimes difficult to know the exact order, so I'll list it below:
Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone)
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
Although the movies are great, they don't include all the amazing details, as with all movies. A short summary:
Harry Potter, a young boy whoâs being constantly abused by his uncle Vernon and aunt Petunia, gets a peculiar letter from the magical school of Hogwarts, where he spends most of his time, becoming his home.
Quotes:
âTo the well-organized mind, death is but the next great adventure." â Albus Dumbledore
âYouâre just as sane as I am" - Luna Lovegood
âMischief managed" - Fred and George Weasley
It is Important to know that j*r is a huge transphobe, along with other things, and is currently being erased by the fandom itself.
2.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians, along with the other series by Rick Riordan, is a definite must-read. With each book, you can really notice the character developments and a lot more! There is loads of representation in this one, with lgbtqia+ characters, black characters, Muslim characters and more. It's very action-packed and addicting, sucking you into the magnificent world of Half-Bloods and Demigods within the first page. The first series consists of 5 books, in the following order:
Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief
Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters
Percy Jackson and the Titan's Curse
Percy Jackson and the Battle of The Labyrinth
Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian
THE MOVIES ARE TRASH SO I DEFINITELY DO NOT RECOMMEND WATCHING THEM BEFORE READING THE BOOKS!!! There were many changes and the movies aren't nearly as good as the books. A short summary:
Percy Jackson, a 12 year-old who lives with his mother, Sally, and step-father, Gabe, attends the private boarding school Yancy Academy. While on a school trip, his teacher, Mrs. Dodds, turns into a fury and attacks him. This, in turn, triggers a series of other problems and adventures.
Quotes:
âIf my life is going to mean anything, I have to live it myself.â - Percy Jackson
âWith great power, comes great need to nap. Wake me up later." - Nico Di Angelo
âEven strength has to bow down to wisdom sometimes." - Annabeth Chase
3.
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is one of my most recommended series! With everything it deals with, from the Capitol to the districts to the champions, the books are amazing!Â
Order:
The Hunger Games
Catching Fire
Mockingjay
Starring the movies is the amazing Jennifer Lawrence, but with all books, the movies have slight differences, although I definitely recommend watching them when you're done with the books.
A Short Summary:
In what was once North America, the Capitol of Panem maintains its hold on its 12 districts by forcing them each to select a boy and a girl, called Tributes, to compete in a nationally televised event called the Hunger Games. Every citizen must watch as the youths fight to the death until only one remains. District 12 Tribute Katniss Everdeen has little to rely on, other than her hunting skills and sharp instincts, in an arena where she must weigh survival against love.
(FILM SYNOPSIS)
Quotes:
"May the odds be ever in your favor." -Â Effie Trinket
"Fire is catching, and if we burn, you burn with us!" - Katniss Everdeen
âHope is the only thing stronger than fear.â - President Snow
4.
Divergent is another book with a huge fandom, and rightfully so. This book is amazing, and you honestly can't live without having read it!
Order:
Divergent
Insurgent
AllegiantÂ
Surprisingly, I haven't watched the movies yet, but I hear that they arenât that bad, so you should give them a go!
Summary:
In a world run by fictional classes known as factions, children who reach the age of 16 begin to choose which factions they wish to call home for the rest of their lives. Each faction comes with its own ups and downs, so it's definitely a hard choice, especially for someone as unique as Beatrice.
Quotes:
âBecoming fearless isn't the point. That's impossible. It's learning how to control your fear, and how to be free from itâ - Four
âWe believe in ordinary acts of bravery, in the courage that drives one person to stand up for another.â - Dauntless Motto
"We are not the same. But we are, somehow, one." - Tris
5.Â
You might have heard of this series, and it's really addictive, trust me! The Mortal Instruments is one of the most astonishing books I've ever read, and it's most definitely my go-to when recommending a book series!
Order:
City of Bones
City of Ashes
City of Glass
City of Fallen Angels
City of Lost Souls
City of Heavenly Fire
Again, (I know this is rather disappointing) I haven't watched the movies, but do check them out!
Summary:
Clary Fray's search for her missing mother leads her into an alternate New York called Downworld, filled with mysterious faeries, hard-partying warlocks, not-what-they-seem vampires, an army of werewolves, and the demons who want to destroy it all.
via:Â https://shadowhunters.com/shadowhunters-novels/the-mortal-instruments/#:~:text=Clary%20Fray's%20search%20for%20her,want%20to%20destroy%20it%20all.
Quotes:
âHeroes aren't always the ones who win. They're the ones who lose, sometimes. But they keep fighting, they keep coming back. They don't give up. That's what makes them heroes.â - Clary Fairchild
âIf I cannot move Heaven, I will raise Hell.â - Sebastion Morgenstern
âThe descent into Hell is easy.â - Motto of the Nephilim
6.
Gay. What more needs to be said?
SADLY, there isn't a movie yet, but I think they're working on one, or sure though
Summary:
Set in a world in which a female Democrat from Texas wins the presidency in 2016, Red, White & Royal Blue chronicles the illicit romance between the president's son, Georgetown senior Alex Claremont-Diaz (Dad is a Mexican-American senator), and Prince Henry of Wales, his childhood nemesis.

Also, classic enemies-friends-lovers arc and honestly it's amazing
Quotes:
âAs your mother, I can appreciate that maybe this isnât your fault, but as the president, all I want is to have the CIA fake your death and ride the dead-kid sympathy into a second term.â - Ellen ClaremontÂ
" 'thatâs because you canât hear all the menacing gobbling.' 'Yes, famously the most sinister of all animal sounds, the gobble.' " - Harry and Alex
"History, huh? Bet we could make some." - Alex
7.
Iâm sure you've heard at least a little bit about this book. While not nearly as famous as ones mentioned above, it's still just as good, of not better. I'd say this book is one of my favorites, to be honest. It speaks about a lot of topics people usually find disturbing, and it makes me so happy that it's there, it's written, it's amazing. PTSD, coming out issues, abusive relationships and more, this book is truly awesome.
TRIGGER WARNINGÂ
Summary:
A young boy named Charlie usually dissociates, and pushes other people away. Heâs afraid of beginning high school, until he meets two other students who show him how bizarre and amazing the world is.
Quotes:
âAnd in that moment, I swear we were infiniteâ - Charlie
âWe accept the love we think we deserveâ - Mr. Anderson
âYou can't just sit there and put everybody's lives ahead of yours and think that counts as love" - Sam
8.Â
This book is honestly pro-feminist and I think that's much more than enough
Summary:
Kaur explores the true impact of sexual abuse and harassment, as well as the difficulties of immigrating, being a female, and depression.
It's also a poem
TRIGGER WARNING
Quotes:
âwhat is stronger
than the human heart
which shatters over and over
and still livesâ
âyou do not just wake up and become the butterflyÂ
- growth is a processâ
âon the last day of love
my heart cracked inside my body"
9.
This book isn't very well-known, which really sucks because I really love how it speaks about the consequences of WWII from the German point of view. And about the Germans who did not believe in Hitler's ways. It's also based on a real story, and it's so cool
Summary:Â
A nurse working in a nursing home meets a peculiar old lady who decides to tell her her story when she meets the nurse's younger son, Karl, who reminded her of her brother. Lizzie (the old lady) speaks about life in Dresden before the war, and even after it. She also tells them the story about the strange, magnificent elephant in her garden.
Quotes:
âThat was the only way of keeping our hopes alive, by looking beyond all we were seeing around us, and the shadow of disaster that hung over us.â -Â
âI think I have always had a strong sense of justice, of fair play, of what is right and what is wrong.â -Â
âOur home should be an oasis of peace and harmony for us in a troubled world.â - Lizzie (Quoting Papi)
10.
This book is pro-blm and it's ahead of its time (by like 2 years but still).Â
Summary:
Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. via:Â https://socialjusticebooks.org/the-hate-u-give/#:~:text=Sixteen%2Dyear%2Dold%20Starr%20Carter,hands%20of%20a%20police%20officer.
Quotes:
âSometimes you can do everything right and things will still go wrong. The key is to never stop doing right.â - Lisa
âDaddy once told me thereâs a rage passed down to every black man from his ancestors, born the moment they couldnât stop the slave masters from hurting their families. Daddy also said thereâs nothing more dangerous than when that rage is activated.â - Starr
âEverybody wants to talk about how Khalil died,â I say. âBut this isnât about how Khalil died. Itâs about the fact that he lived. His life mattered. Khalil lived!â I look at the cops again. âYou hear me? Khalil lived!â - Starr

Invisible stringÂ
Chapter 2, 19th of December
The only light in the room was coming from the embers in the fireplace. Red embers, and Willâs widened eyes. Nico startled.
Was it a vision? A trick of the light? No, Nico rubbed his eyes, and Will was still there, kneeling in front of him, with a blanket that went around his head, and fell over his shoulders like a knightâs cape. And he was staring right into Nicoâs eyes, like a puppy who has broken its favorite toy.
Nico groaned. âWhat is it now?â
Will came even closer, and his words came out as a whisper, as though he was afraid of being overheard. Like he wasnât the one who listened to other peopleâs conversations. âDonât be too nice, I might get used to it. So, listen, you know how I said we should both sleep in the living room?â
How he could formulate such complex sentences at âwhat was it? One in the morning?â was far above Nicoâs knowledge.
âPretty sure I was there,â Nico replied, covering his face with his arm.
Will pulled Nicoâs arm away, eliciting another groan from him. âSo, do you remember?â
âAre you seriously askingâ?â
âI think Iâm about to shit myself.â
Nico stared at him, his lips tugged downwards, and his tiredness didnât seem so important anymore. âI didnât spend the afternoon showing you the house multiple times, so that you could remember where the toilet was, to just hold your hand and get you there myself in the middle of the night. I swear to God, Iâmââ
âNo! Not like that, I mean, figuratively. Like, Iâm scared.â
âScared.â
âThereâs strange sounds in this place. Like, I was just minding my own business, and suddenly the floor creaked. What floor creaks? Why would it? Is this place haunted? If you brought me to a haunted chalet, Iâm suing you! Suing you!â
Will was resting his forearms next to Nicoâs chest, and for the first time, he noticed just how close they were. If he leaned forward, he could just grab Will by the ear, and pull him back to the other couch to sleep. Not doing it was costing him a lot of self-control.
âWhat do you want me to do? Call the ghost busters?â Nico thought that pulling the blanket over his head and curling on himself would just put an end to the discussion, but he had never met someone as uncaring toward social signals as Will.
âItâs the middle of the night, they wouldnât even be open.â He pulled the blanket away. âCan we go upstairs?â
âIâm sleeping, just go if you want to.â
âYes, because I want to take the stairs alone. I had to give myself a one hour long pep-talk before crossing the distance between that couch and this couch, and I had to crawl. Crawl!â
There was something Nicoâs father often told him. âYou are stubborn. It will make for an interesting king, seeing as you donât ever want to bendâ. Well. Nico wouldnât bend. He knew it. Everyone knew he didnât bend.
Then, Willâs voice came soft, little more than a whisper, as he slowly set his hand where Nicoâs was, only the blanket dividing them.
âPlease.â
Nicoâs eyes opened. Will was still there, in front of him, with those bright, puppy-like eyes, and he was staring right at Nico. From the window behind him, the snow glowed white under the starlight.
âI know thereâs only one bed, Iâll just sleep on the floor. Just âI donât want to stay here.â
Nico sighed, but for an entirely different reason, even he couldnât quite pin-point. âAlright. Letâs go.â
He already knew he wouldnât let Will sleep on the floor. When they arrived upstairs, he just tugged Will to the bed, where they both laid.
Nico fell asleep as soon as he touched the mattress.
The second time Nico woke up, the sun was shining in the sky, and the bed where Will had slept was cold. Nico himself was in the middle of it, which was strange, considering he remembered falling asleep on the edge of the mattress.
Shaking the thought out of his head, he slipped from the covers. He put on another sweatshirt, one he was pretty sure his grandmother had knitted for him.
Will was sitting at the head of the stairs, hugging his knees to his chest, and his expression light up when he saw Nico.
âI couldnât find the kitchen!â he exclaimed, like it was something he was proud of.
Nico rubbed his ear. It was far too early in the morning for Willâs brightness. âJust snoop around next time. This place is yours too, now.â
It was something he said mostly to himself, he needed the reminder sometimes. With the constant, buzzing cheer around Will, it was hard to remember that he didnât want to be there, he was forced to. What Nico really didnât understand though, was why Willâs face fell so much when Nico said those words. After all, that was one of the pros. He was rich now, like filthy rich. So rich, every friend of his could be rich, too. Of course, that came to the price of being Nicoâs soulmate. That wasnât a path Nico wanted to go down, though. Not so early in the morning.
âAlright, letâs go eat,â Nico grumbled, stepping over Will to descend the stairs.
Willâs next words made him completely freeze.
âWasnât the fridge empty yesterday?â
Nico blinked. A strange thought wormed its way into his chest, but he pushed it away. âI mean, itâs always full of things.â
He could feel Willâs sharp eyes on the back of his head. âI take it youâve never gone grocery shopping before.â
Nico fastened his steps, not at all worried. âIâm sure itâs full now.â
âDid you go grocery shopping while I was sleeping? Because otherwise youâll just find itâdonât close the door in my face, you know I get easily lost!â
But Willâs anger was fast over, replaced by smugness, at the sight of the empty fridge staring back at Nico.
âGuess weâll go grocery shopping, after all,â Will said.
âBut that will take time, Iâm hungry now.â
âOh my God, you are adorable.â When Nico turned to glare at Will, he found him just staring back with those eyes wide open once again. âCome on, weâll stop somewhere to get breakfast.â
The streets were packed with people, mostly tourists. Not many bothered to give them a second glance, but that was mostly thanks to the mix of low beanies and big scarves. Nico couldnât bring himself to look at the people on the ski tracks, it would have just been a cruel reminder.
âWhere do you want to go?â Will asked him. He seemed to like the city, or so Nico secretly hoped. He didnât like the idea of boring Will to death. âDo they even sell Swiss chocolate here?â
Nico bit back a grin. âSo that can be the first time you eat Swiss chocolate so close to Switzerland?â
âThatâs very funny. Iâll let you know; Iâve been in Switzerland before. So keep your smugness down, fancy boy.â
The blush on Nicoâs face was to blame completely on the cold. âDid you go with your parents? In Switzerland, I mean.â
Will scoffed in delight as he watched a woman put gloves on a little girl, no more than two years old. She caught Willâs eyes, and waved her hand. He winked back at her, making her giggle. âYeah. We went there for my broâfor a birthday. I mostly stayed inside, though. I didnât know how to ski, nor did I want to learn.â
Nico nodded. He ignored Willâs slip, he didnât want to force details out of him. Heâd understand Willâs need to keep things to himself, they didnât owe anything to each other, after all. He pointed to a bar on the other side of the road.
âThatâs where I usually go with Hazel. They are discreet.â
âAfraid people will take photos of you eating a croissant?â
Will had exaggerated the French pronounce so much, Nico couldnât help a loud snort. In the back of his mind, he noticed how Willâs eyes lit up.
Inside the bar were enough people for the place to be filled with laughter and chatters. It was hot inside, and a nice smell of freshly baked goods filled Nicoâs nostrils. Something bumped into his hand, and when he looked down, he realized it was Willâs own hand. Will, who was nodding toward a free table in the corner, far from the window. Though, when they sat there, Nico realized he could see the TV, and promptly froze, because as of that moment, there was a service about them.
Will followed Nicoâs gaze, looking behind his shoulder.
âWhat do they say?â he asked, looking back at Nico. If only Nico were better at reading people⊠was it guilt written in his eyes? Did he have someone back at home, were they waiting for him?
âNothing. Nothing much, theyâre just showing our first meeting back at the palace.â
Will nodded. âDo they know weâre here?â
Nico took the scarf off his face, and brushed a hand through his hair. âI donât think so. My parents made a statement, said we were taking some time off to privately get to know each other.â He shrugged. âNo one thought weâd meet quite so soon, I guess. How did they even find you?â
This time, it was Will who shrugged. âA friend of mine is a YouTuber, thereâs this scene from an old vlog, we were on his camper, it was after graduation. And I was sleeping, shirtless, he caught the mark in the frame. So, thatâs how they got mine, I guess. It was an old video, though. How did they see yours?â
âMy cousin Percy posted some pictures of our time in the military. In one of his I was in the back, shirtless.â
âWhereâs yours?â Will asked, leaning forward on the table. His voice was so very soft in that moment. âYour mark.â
Nico put his hand on his heart, then trailed up. Just under his collarbone, a little to the left.
âMineâs there, too, but on the back.â
âWhen did you get it?â
âEleven. You?â
Nico opened his mouth to respond, but he was interrupted by the waitress asking what they wanted. Nico ordered for both of them in Italian, and by the time the girl left âshe couldnât be older than Hazelâ the topic of their conversation changed. The closer the marks appeared on the body, the stronger the bond. Nico didnât want to think about it.
âIâm just saying,â Will said, sometime later, when most of the people at the other tables had left and their spots filled by others. âThat thereâs no better love-trope than childhood best-friends to lovers, and the Lion King failed.â
Nico groaned. âWeâve been at this for an hour, itâs not Simbaâs faultââ
âOf course it isnât, he was a child! But the writers just have them running around, and suddenly they are in love?â Will looked like heâd just swallowed a whole lemon. âWhat even is that? Is it witchcraft?â
âThey have known each other their whole childhood!â
âWe have a very different conception of whole, darlinâ. They have known each other long enough to sing one, and I mean one, song about how much Simba wanted his father to die so he could step up and take the throneââ
Nico swatted Willâs hand away from his face, his index finger had been once again waving in front of Nicoâs face. âHe didnât know Mufasa would have to die!â
âThatâs a hypothesis if Iâve ever heard one, and every single solution to every single issue in the American school system is a hypothesisââ
âWhat does that even mean, Iâmââ
Will took one of the awful cookies theyâd been gifted with their coffees, and stuffed it into Nicoâs mouth. âDonât interrupt meââ
Nico slumped back in the chair, a frown tugging his lips downwards. âYou will never see the light of day again; Iâm putting you in the fucking dungeons.â
âYou dragged me to a haunted house, so thatâs on you. What was I saying again?â He clasped his hands, attracting a few curious glances from the people around them. Nico sent them an apologetic look, but he couldnât hide his amusement. âOh, right! Simbaâs sudden love. I mean, he just sees her and suddenly heâs in love? They just mistake past fondness for something more, thatâs all Iâm saying.â
âThey have children togetherââ
âThey are part of the same pack. Thereâs only one lion. They are half-siblings. And Simba takes after his father. He, too, is a whore, who sleeps with all the lionesses.â
Nico blinked, slowly. Will was unmoving, with his arms crossed on the chest, and his tongue sticking out of his left cheek.
âYouâyou know what? Thatâs all right.â Nico nodded, swallowing around a dry throat. âYou are completely wrong, but I will let you have it.â
âI feel victorious.â
âYou really have no reason to.â
Willâs lips turned into a white, thin, line, and he turned redder. Just as Nico started worrying that he was having an allergic reaction to something, Will fell forward on the table, his shoulders shaking as he laughed.
âWe should get going, anyway,â Nico continued. âIs there anywhere you want to go?â
âIâm not the one who knows the city! What is even here to see? I saw a lake when we were arriving, are there ducks to feed?â
âYou would come all the way to Europe to feed ducks?â
âI actually came here to marry you, but you do you.â Willâs eyes widened, Nico felt his own doing the same. Will coughed, drumming his fingers on the table. He didnât look at Nico in the eyes.
âThereâs actually a library down the road. You want to go there?â
Of course, Will couldnât understand a single one of the book titles, but that didnât mean he didnât have fun. The Prince was bent forward, grabbing a book from what seemed like the most boring section of the library, but Will was no impartial judge.
âIs it just me or does that book seem very homoerotic?â Will asked, pointing to a book with a girl picking flowers.
The Prince stood in less than a second, flinching slightly, eyes widened. âAre youâ?â
âAre you okay? Did you pull a muscle or something?â Will put a hand on the Princeâs forearm, but it was brushed off quickly. Will tried not to let it get to him, he was beginning to notice how little the Prince liked being touched.
âIâm fine. However, thatâs a gardening book. Honestly, thatâs a new kind of low even for you.â
Will stuck out his tongue at him. âWhatever. Are you buying that? Whatâs it called?â
âLa collina dei conigli. Uh, the title is different in English. LikeâŠ?â
âWatership down.â
Both Will and Nico turned at the new voice. A man stared back at them. Man, he probably was around their age, and his English had an accent Will couldnât quite place.
âI couldnât help but hear you,â he said with a sheepish smile, shrugging one shoulder. âSorry for intruding.â
Will spared a glance to the Prince, but he was just looking back at the man, seemingly at a loss for words, and his conversation with Hazel rang loudly in his ears, from his deepest memories.
âShould you ever feel like heâs cold, you should check the YouTube compilation Prince NiccolĂČâs top 11 awkward moments. Believe me,â she had squeezed his forearm. âItâll make you feel better.â
Now, Will turned slowly toward the Prince, with both eyebrows raised.
âOh, itâs no problem,â he told the man. âYouâre helping us, so thank you.â
The silence turned awkward real fast. Will bumped his hand into the Princeâs.
âOh, yes. Thank you,â the Prince said.
Why was he watching the man like a deer caught in the headlights? It took Will a few moments to remember that, just a day earlier, he had been at the other end of that gaze.
âIâm Will Solace!â
âOh, uh, Paolo Montez.â
The Prince nodded even more awkwardly. âNiccolĂČ.â
âNiccolĂČâŠ?â
âSolace,â Will supplied. He sent Nico a sickeningly sweet smile, hoping he would be forgiven when he interlaced their fingers. âHe still gets shy saying it.â
Paoloâs eyes filled with understanding. âOh, I should have realized sooner! Congratulations!â
Willâs smile widened. With a twinge of guilt, he realized that Paolo was exactly the type of guy heâd get a crush for back in high school. He cleared his throat.
âWell, weâll just go. You know, honeymoon business,â Will said. âNice meeting you.â
Paolo responded, but Will had already dragged the Prince outside. The cool air kissed Willâs heated skin, making him shiver. For a moment, he wished he hadnât fled so quickly.
âAre making a thief out of me?â the Prince asked, holding the book up. Then, he glanced down at their intertwined hands. âWill you ever let me go?â
Will let him go, and crossed his arms on the chest. âIâm not going back in.â
âI see. Wouldnât want your crush to see you so flustered, would you, hubby?â
With a chuckle, the Prince turned back to the library, talking to himself in Italian. Would it be strange to ask the old woman with the Chihuahua to translate for him? Sighing, Will just waited.
âIâm sorry I grabbed your hand,â Will said, once they were walking to a restaurant. It was almost midday, and the Prince had promised to bring him to the Christmas market in the afternoon. âI noticed you donât really like being touched, but it seemed like the best idea at the moment.â
The Prince shrugged. âIâm sorry I froze up. Sometimes Iâm awkward.â
âSometimes?â Will clicked his tongue. âBecause Iâve heard it happened at least eleven times.â
The Prince stopped, raising the bookstore bag to his chest, his jaw opened so widely the scarf fell in his mouth. He sputtered it out, with an indignant scowl. Will felt the need to pinch his cheek, so badly his fingertips tingled.
âDid Hazel show you that?â The Prince asked. âIâm pretty sure she made it. She always brings it up.â
âI donât know, I saw her struggling for half an hour with WhatsApp, searching for your fatherâs contact. She didnât show me, though. She just told me to look it up.â
âIâll try to be glad for that, but itâs really hard right now.â
âOh my God, look thereâs a little golden retriever! Isnât it adorable?â
Before the Prince could stop him, Will was already halfway across the road, cooing at the puppy.
Will knelt on the ground, his hands buried deep in the puppyâs fur. The girl who held the leash looked up at Nico, a question clear in her eyes.
âExcuse him,â he said in Italian. âHe gets excited easily when he sees dogs. I should probably get a leash form him, too.â
The girl laughed, but she was staring at them with eyes wide in wonder. âAre you that Prince?â
Nicoâs eyes widened. Usually, children didnât recognize him, and he was a bit rusty, to be honest. He hadnât been under the spotlight for the past two years, he was out of shape with being recognized.
âNiccolĂČ,â he said.
Will looked up, despite having missed the entirely of the speech. âIâm Will,â he said, beaming at the little girl. She couldnât be older than eight.
âEmma,â she said, and when she continued in Italian, Willâs gaze turned confused, a little lost, but he didnât drop it back to the dog. âI live there.â She pointed at one of the houses on the other side of the road.
âAnd where are your parents?â Nico asked.
She shrugged. âHome. Iâm walking Stella.â
Nico pointed at the dog. âStella?â
Emma nodded. Will looked up, and pointed at the dog again. âStella?â Both Nico and the girl nodded, although Emma also giggled.
âYou talk funny,â she said.
Nico translated for Will, a small grin on his face, before turning back to the girl. âItâs his accent. He comes from Texas, do you know where that is? Itâs in America.â
âWhy did he come here?â she asked.
âHeâs my soulmate.â
âThe TV said so, too! My parents are soulmates. Does he love you?â
Nico blinked, heat rose to his cheeks. âWeâre getting to know each other.â
âBut will he love you?â
Nico opened and closed his mouth, knowing he was gasping like a fish. Emma lowered her pink hat on her forehead, sniffling with her nose. Without a word, Will took a tissue from his pockets, and handed it to her.
âDo you parents know where you are?â Nico asked instead.
Emma nodded, and pointed toward the house again. âThatâs my mom.â
Following her finger, Nico noticed a woman behind the window, with a mug in her hand, the other on her belly. She was pregnant.
Nico stood, fixing Emmaâs hat on her head.
âDonât get out of your motherâs sight. Oh, and donât talk to strangers. Next time a stranger approaches you, let Stella bite them. Alright?â
Emma nodded. âI will!â
âSee you around, then.â
âWait! You are a prince.â She held out a gloved hand, with another giggle. âShouldnât you kiss my hand before going?â
Nicoâs cheeks dusted in pink; Will rose from his feet beside him, still looking a little puzzled.
âYouâre right,â Nico amended. âI can be a very forgetful prince.â
He bowed deeply, wondering what Emmaâs mother was thinking about them. Did she think they were assaulters? He really hoped not to get followed by the police. But also, he hoped the mother didnât trust strangers so close to her daughter.
âWill too!â She trilled, when they took a step forward.
Will, who had given her a wave and a wink, looked back at Nico. And so Nico translated.
Emma tugged Nicoâs coat before letting them leave, only speaking when he bent down to hear her whispered words.
âYou should make him fall in love with you.â
The hostess at the front of the restaurant brought them to the second floor, and gave them a table behind a black curtain. It took Nico probably more than socially acceptable to realize that Will wouldnât understand a word of what was written.
âI honestly wouldnât recognize them even if they were in English,â Will said, after Nico asked him if he needed a translation. âIâm sure you havenât noticed, but I am, maybe, not in the same social class as princes.â
Nico shook his head. He never really knew what to respond to things like that. He had to admit that the trip was going well, at least now. They didnât have many awkward silences, nor did they hate each other. Maybe Will hated him a bit, for everything he was taking. Sooner or later, theyâd have to discuss about their bond.
âCan I ask you something?â Will suddenly asked, leaning forward on the table. âAnd if you say I already have, Iâm going to throw a fit.â
âWell, that would be new. Whatâs it been?â Nico took his phone out of the pocket, checking the time. âFifteen minutes since the last? A new record. You must have beaten every other toddler in the city.â
âYou are so very funny, darlinâ.â Will smiled at him from across the table, his freckles stretched on his nose and cheeks. âItâs just that Iâve seen a lot of guards around the palace, and we were escorted to the airport, but weâre here alone. Iâm not complaining, far from it, but shouldnât you always have a bodyguard? I thought that was just something princes did.â
Nico nodded. âYeah, but other princes donât have the same tricks as I do.â
He looked up at Nico. Back at his hip. Nico bit his lip to not burst out laughing.
âIf you have a fucking gun, I swear Iâm actually calling the police. Do you think itâs normal to go around with guns?â He hissed. His face turned red. He started waving his index in the air again. âIf I wanted to feel threatened whenever I stepped out of the house, or god forbid that thing was actually under the same roof as me for all this time, I would have stayed in fucking Texas, with Johnny Red down the road from my house, with his cokes and the lined up bottle on the fence.â
Will breathed heavily, looking like heâd just run a marathon. He was waiting for Nicoâs response, but when he received none, he passed his hands through his curly hair, messing them up even more.
âThere were children downstairs! Children! And you are telling me you have a gun on you? With children in the building? God, oh my God. I know I said you were bad mannered, but thatâs just terrible on a human level. Fuck.â
Nico couldnât resist it anymore. He burst out laughing, throwing his head back, covering his mouth with his hands. He was hit by Willâs napkin, thrown right in his face.
âDonât you dare, donât you fucking dare!â Will exclaimed. He shook his head, crossed his arms, and leaned back in his chair. He shook his head again, making his curls bounce. âStop laughing!â
âI donât have a gun, Will,â Nico finally said. He took the small box from his belt, hidden by the long hoodie he was wearing. He left it on the table. âI thought theyâd given you one, too. The Queen seems to think you are kind of a big deal, you know.â
Will poked at the box, a blush dusted his cheekbones. He looked at Nico through his eyelashes. âWhat is this thing? Itâit doesnât look like a gun.â
Of one thing, Nico was very sure: Will was far more than pretty.
âMaybe because it isnât one. I appreciate your thoughts on gun control, though. Itâs a, uh, I donât really know how you call it in English. Safety box? Should I ever be in danger, Iâll press the little button in that box, and bodyguards and policemen will come fast. Real fast.â
âOh my God. Youâre right. They gave me one, told me it was to keep me safe, and I lost it. Oh God. How much does it even cost? Iâm already bankrupt. Hell, Iâm far over bankrupt. Iâm so bankrupt I donât actually own anything. Iâm not even wearing my clothes! This is all yours. Oh, God.â
Nico froze, staring at the Will, who now had his head in his hands, half slumped on the chair, probably more on the floor. The waitress was coming over, Nico gestured for her to come later. How did he even comfort Will? He should have let the waitress come, and embarrass herself. Now he was going to embarrass himself. Fuck.
Nico cleared his throat. âIsnât everyone a bit broke?â
Will looked up from his hands, furrowing his eyebrows. Then he looked down at Nicoâs finger, where his black ring shone proud.
âEveryone else. Except for me. If, if you take me out of the picture, everyone is broke,â he said. âMaybe not other royals. Or movie stars. Except the ones on drug, they always become poor after a while. Many public figures actually seem rich, but they arenât. They are middle class, at best!â
Will looked at Nico. He looked at him for a very long time. Long enough that Nico realized what he had said, and starting pulling at the collar of his sweatshirt.
âYou are so clueless,â Will said, a smile tugged his lips upwards. âYou are so clueless, itâs amazing.â
Nico blinked. âHave you ever been told you donât know how to show gratitude?â
âOh, youâre welcome. God, Iâd pay golden âwell, actually, I wouldnât, as you now know I donât possess any goldâ but Iâd really like to see you for even just a day in New York City. Like, itâs actually crazy how clueless you are.â
âIt really sounds like an insult.â
Nico couldnât find it in himself to be offended, though. Not when Will sat straighter in his chair, without hiding his face.
âI would never insult you, like you would never mock me. Itâs a crazy thought, Your Highness.â He furrowed his eyebrows. âIs that how you say it?â
âNo, you say it in fancy. Itâs Your Highness.â
âYou said it like I did.â
âI really didnât.â Nico bit his lips, but he couldnât fight off a grin. âI said Your Highness. You said Your Highness.â
âYour Highness.â
âYour Highness.â
âYourâyou are mocking me again, arenât you?â
Will didnât look too annoyed when Nico bent over the table in laughter.
It was dark outside by the time they were back in the house. While the Prince tended to the fireplace, Will sat on the couch, the TV remote in his hands.
âSo, I guess thatâs a Smart TV, since you are the only not-broke person in the world,â Will said.
The Prince stilled, and looked at him from behind his shoulder. âWhat do you mean. What do you want to do.â
âIâm not Satan, stop treating me like that.â Will sighed, and took his knees up to his chest. âI just want to look into the last eleven awkward moments of your life.â
âI hate you.â
âThanks, darlinâ. Come here.â
Will made grabby hands at the Prince, until his hands were swatted away, though the Prince did sit, albeit with his hands crossed on the chest, and a frown marrying his features.
âShould we watch this?â Will asked, selecting a video from E!News, which talked about them.
The Prince shrugged. âIf you want to know whatâs happening with us, then I guess we could.â
It took Will less than a second to decide that he didnât care about it all that much. However, he froze when he saw the video under that. It had more than three million views.
Apollo: between glory and reality. The trailer.
âYou are a fan?â Nico asked, noticing where his gaze had fallen. âI met him once. Heâheâs a bit full of himself, you know. Heâs another one of the crazy rich people on Hearth.â
Will nodded, but his throat was completely dry. In the thumbnail of Apolloâs upcoming documentary, was a photo of his family, with a birthday cake in front of them. Without counting them, Will knew there are ten candles.
He put the remote back on the couch, and tried giving the Prince a smile.
âI forgot toâI forgot something. IâllâI need to check it.â
Nico knocked on the bedroom door. It took Will a while to respond, long enough that Nico was sure he wouldnât.
Will was sitting on the left side of the bed, where he had slept the night before. He had his knees up to his chest, and was hugging them tightly. Nico had thought he was calling someone, and thatâs what was taking him so long, but his phone was nowhere to be seen.
âIâm ordering food,â Nico said. âWhat can I get for you? I donât think thereâs any Chinese restaurant around here. SoâŠâ
âAm I a bad med-student if I ask for pizza again?â
It was a strange sight. Will had looked so distressed just an hour ago, but now he was alright. All bouncy and himself again. Had Nico imagined his previous uneasiness? He was shitty at reading people and emotions, it wouldnât be so strange. But Will was his soulmate, shouldnât Nico understand him better than anyone else in the world? Hell, in the universe?
Nico nodded. âThe worst, probably.â
âWell, then donât snitch on me. So, can we get pizza?â
Nico rolled his eyes. âAbsolutely not.â
They ate pizza in bed. The smell of cheap pizza didnât leave the room even when they opened the windows.

A Reblog saves a life! Â | Â Send Me A Prompt
.-
Annabeth is a fully fledged adult now, honest.
She subscribes to the New Yorker, listens to podcasts in the morning while getting ready for her crummy, right out of college internship in one of the most prestigious architecture firms in the city. She votes even in the primaries and remembers to reload her metro card before itâs out and has even got a God forsaken schedule that she relies on like a lifeline.
All this to say, Annabeth had really once thunk that becoming an adult meant your life turns stale and your days become monotonous. But that was before she began boarding with three literal definitions of spitfires in a Bushwick apartment way too small for four girls, and way to run down for the countless prank wars waged between them and the boys across the way.Â
Annabeth tries telling Piper this one Thursday afternoon while sheâs loading her Nerf gun with the water balloons that Rachelâs preparing with such precision that it kinda terrifies Annabeth shitless, if sheâs being frank.
ââs too late to surrender now Chase!â Piper bellows, cocking and then setting down the toy gun in a neat row for the next to be prepared. âItâs about honor now.â
âHonor?â Annabeth repeats in a voice thatâs flat enough to cut.
âTheyâve won the last two rounds Annabeth,â Rachel tells her, point blank as she ties the next water balloon to be passed off, alabaster skin freckled with paint like always when she comes back from one of her classes. âTheyâre getting too big headed over this.â
âYesterday Leo offered to buy me a latte! The little fuck.â
Annabethâs fair brows knit together, totally confused to Piperâs sudden flash of anger, but reckons that it would be impossible to understand the perceived slight even if she asked Piper to explain.
âYou guys are off your rockers,â Annabeth informs them instead, flickers her gaze over to Hazel for some support from someone who is actually sane. She in turn only shrugs, endeared looking as she returns to her sketches.Â
âEt tu Brute?â
âitâs fun,â Hazel says in her southern drawl, which Annabeth once thought was sweet because it reminded her of venturing outdoors in the Virginia foothills when she was a tot. Though now Annabeth has decided that the accent is actually a ploy to make her sound welcoming for her pray before she killed them off. Knows it for a fact that sheâs done it with that friend who visits enough that heâs practically living with the guys too, which obviously means he was roped into all this ridiculousness.
âYouâre either with us or against us baby doll,â Piper winks Annabethâs way, starts a new round of ammunition with Rachel. âThis oneâs for Mama Fisher in the stars!â
âInsane! Fucking insane! Annabeth repeats emphatically before storming out there apartment to grab the mail, suddenly feels accosted with unwelcome nerves when she steps into the elevator only to be met face to face with one of the aforementioned boys across the hall, the objectively good looking, but impossibly kind one. All ebony locks and crooked grins and eyes the color of sea glass.
Oh fuck.
âAnnabeth,â he crows, positively gleeful sounding, which only makes it so her cheeks begin to redden, and her chest contracts.
âPercy, hey howâs it been.â
âFine,â he says with a one armed shrug, begins scratching the back of his head sheepishly. And God fucking damn it, he doesnât also get to be cute! Thatâs not fair! âYou headed to work?â
âoh, ah yeah, I mean just for some overtime. We got commissioned for this new thing in Germany of all places, and they kinda need all hands on deck.â
He whistles, low and impressed.Â
âWhy do I get the sense that theyâd crumble without you?â He asks with a quirked brow.
âBecause flattery is a great way to make friends,â Annabeth smirks, strolls out towards the back row of mail slots to get the inevitable pack of bills and adverts thatâs waiting for them.
âOy, I take offense to that Annabeth,â he sniffs, leans against the wall besides her, one leg crossed over the other, effortless in the whole CW pretty boy with a mysterious past shtick heâs got working for him. An even more hilarious thought on account to Annabeth knowing how his ma sends him a basket of homemade, blue cookies every Sunday afternoon, and that he spends most of his free time protesting for action against climate change with his best friend from literal childhood, a scruffy, adorable dork named Grover.
âIs that right?â She snorts as she shuffles through the letters, tosses away the offer for a free garden gnome from some Lady named Aunty Em, crams a coupon for a free panty from Victoriaâs Secret into her bra, and texts the group chat for Rachel to pick up a letter from her dad and Hazel one from her older brother.Â
âCourse,â Percy sulks, big eyes glittering a thousand shades of green that it kinda takes Annabethâs breath away. âI thought weâve been friends, at least for a while now.â
âYou know what they say about assuming Perseus,â Annabeth snorts, hip checking him as she makes the track down to the nearest subway stop, at least a five minute walk. She totally is not utterly elated over the fact that heâs still walking besides her, dimpling down like there were no where else heâd rather be.
âYou know I didnât even think you could allude to curse words,â Percy guffaws, impossibly bright and impossibly real. âI thought you were too prim and proper for that sorta behavior.â
âShut up seaweed brains,â Annabeth laughs, canât help the smile that breaks her face in half whenever heâs around.
âNo deadass Chase!â he defends, emphatic. âI even bet Jason that you were related to like Grace Kelly or some shit, that itâs like illegal in your familial bylines to present yourself as anything other than perfect in public.â
âYou are such a pain in the ass.â
âOh my God! You did it again! Itâs like itâs Christmas!â
Faux aggrieved, Annabeth rolls back her head in exasperation, eyes alone definitely not enough to emote the proper level of feeling.
âHey donât blame me,â Percy raises his hands in concession. âYouâre the one who refuses to have fun, like you were a forty year old lawyer.â
Annabeth hikes up her brows, affronted.Â
âi have fun!â
âRight,â Percy snorts. âIâm sorry babe but Friday night board games donât count.â
âThose are fun Percy!â Annabeth argues.
âYou wouldnât know fun if it hit you in the face!â Percy insists, stopping outside the stairwell.Â
âAnd what? Pelleting one another with water balloons like we were Freshmanâs in college again, thatâs fun to you I suppose?â Annabeth charges, glare firmly set and weight slung to her left hip.
âWhy yes Grandma, it is,â Percy tells her, words hugged in a playful cadence that really could entice anyone to commit a felony with him. The bastard.
âYou are a prick,â Annabeth informs him waspishly.
âAnd you donât always gotta be so stressed. I mean I respect the hustle Chase, but youâre allowed to just chill once in a while, let down your hair and all.âÂ
âYou couldnât handle that,â she sniffs, pulls out her card to swipe. âIf I actually tried me and the girls would ruin you fools.â
âIs that right?â
âWipe the floor with you,â Annabeth assures.
âWell then, looking forwards to the challenge Chase,â Percy beams, softly tugs on her high pony before walking back to the apartments. It feels like a legion of butterflies are swarming down deep in Annabethâs stomach over the small contact alone.
âDamn you Percy Jackson.â
.-
âRemind me again why youâre helping? Hazel asks for the third time that Saturday morning as the four sum are crowded around the makeshift map Annabeth had sketched out for them to follow, fully determined now.
âShh,â Piper swats at her arm, as if physically trying to shoo the question away. âAnnabeth we donât care as long as you explain the plan just one more time.â
âSlower,â Rachel tacks on, gnawing on her thumb nail nervously.Â
âRight, well just listen closer ladies, this is a one and done deal, okay?â Sheâs met by a chorus of nods before she repeats her game strategy, one where each girl takes one of the four main hotspots around the building, skulking in the shadows until the predicted guy ends up there, surprised and defenseless when met by the water balloons of doom.
âIâve already casually told both Jason and Leo that my parents were throwing us a brunch up state, so they donât even know that weâre here.â
âGod Annabeth if I didnât think it would ruin our friendship Iâd kiss you right now,â Piper sighs dreamily.
âFocus that pretty little head McLean,â Annabeth instructs, elbowing her side caustically. âYouâre position is by the gym, Jason always goes there Saturday afternoons cause he thinks it makes it alright for him to get plastered that night.â
âYouâre fucking a nerd,â Rachel tells Piper and both Annabeth and Hazel canât help but nod along.
âNo judgment zone!â Piper demands petulantly.
âWhatever,â Annabeth waves her off. âHazel youâll be in the front, waiting for Frank to come visit, and Rachel youâll be waiting in the garden area where Leo comes to build one of his freaky gadgets.â
âTotally, you can count on me babe.â
âAnd what about you Annabeth?â Hazel asks.
âIâve got Jackson,â Annabeth tells her, tone mock grave as she cocks her own toy weapon determinedly.
âSo sexy,â Piper marvels.
.-
Their building rents out a corner on the bottom level to a small bistro with friendly smiles and tasty enough brew that it keeps them coming back. Itâs where Annabeth and Percy had first met when he had moved in with the others nearly six months ago. Itâs also the first place Annabeth heard his laughter, and where Percy listened when she went on a tirade about her crazy parents and their crazy expectations and how sometimes she just needed space away from all of it. Itâs where Percy told her that his mother is the most important person in his world and how he thought he never cared what his father thought of him until he had to make a decision on what heâd major in, and of course he followed in Poseidonâs footsteps. Itâs where they stayed up late trading stories about their complicated childhoods and dreams for their futures and the place that Annabeth knew for sure that if she let herself, she really could fall for Percy. For the candor in his brilliant eyes. For the pretty smile he sports for the sake of his loved ones over himself, and for the conviction in his beliefs.
Annabeth tries not thinking of any of that when she crouches down deeper in the dark nook behind one of the decorative plants as Percy gets up from his table, tossing out his latte and shouldering his work bag.
Itâs now or never.
The moment Percy steps through the threshold Annabeth pounces up and aims. What she doesnât expect is for him to keel over to block her, and instead of hitting his insanely chiseled pecks, the water balloon hits straight in his face. Close enough and hard enough that the water suddenly darkens to red, mixing with the blood pouring out his nose.
âHoly shit!â Percy cries, pinching his nostrils shut.
âOh my God!â Annabeth yells, frantically grabs for a pile of napkins from the counter besides herâ toppling over a mess of straws and sugar packets in her wakeâ and then dashes over to press them into his grasp. âIâm so so sorry! I didnât in my wildest dreams imagine that would happen! I swear!â
Annabeth expects at least for Percy to bemoan the injury, but instead sheâs answered by a frankly terrifying boom of cackles.
âPercy? Have you cracked? Did I knock your brains out permanently?â
âWhen you said youâd ruin us, I didnât think youâd literally cause physical harm Chase,â Percy retorts, still fighting down bubbles of laughter.
âYouâre manic,â she pouts, long suffering.
âAnd youâre terrifying.â
âBet it works for you though,â she preens, canât help but be boastful over the way a blush touches the tops of his cheeks.
âTalk about adding harm to humiliation,â Percy grouces.Â
âPoor baby,â Annabeth mock croons, thinks that today actually might turn out pretty amazing.
.-
She brings him upstairs to properly clean off the blood from his face and to come up with the conditions with at least a temporary truce, definitely not so she can finally trade a totally thrilling snog with him in privacy.
âYou drive a hard bargain Chase,â Percy tells her, settling into the sofa as Annabeth unfolds her game of monopoly for them, having proclaimed that itâs a perfect time for her to prove how much fun board games can be.
âOh hush,â she cuffs him on the back of the head playfully. âYouâre just mad I won.â
âMore like you committed battery,â Percy contends, pouting moodily, is only consoled when Annabeth leans forwards to kiss him again.
âYou looked pretty bleedingâ Oh God! Did I just say that out loud?â
Percy dissolves into a peals of laughter once more, and Annabeth tries her damndest to melt into a puddle right on spot.
âI canât believe Iâm so into such a maniac,â Percy tells her, eyes and smile glittering.
âSO rude,â Annabeth sniffs, arms crossed against her chest.Â
âBut accurate Chase.â
Annabeth doesnât bother to argue anymore because Percyâs already slanted their lips against one another again, and heâs doing this insane thing with his tongue that it makes her toes curl.
Yeah, today turned out amazing indeed.Â

YA & School Love in LGBTQIA+ Historical Romances
First off, Iâm glad to say that the YA novels of today are teeming with LGBT characters, many of them MCs. That said, this is just a taste of a few that I really enjoyed or by authors you might not be aware of yet. @lgbtqreads is an excellent resource for more exhaustive lists, and also companies like Book Riot.
All Out: The No-Longer-Secret Stories of Queer Teens throughout the Ages. Short story anthology of LGBTQIA teenagers throughout history, from across the spectrum. Ed by Sandra Mitchell
- Take a journey through time and genres to discover stories where queer teens live, love and shape the world around them. Seventeen young adult authors across the queer spectrum have come together to create a collection of beautifully written diverse historical fiction for teens. From a retelling of Little Red Riding Hood set in war-torn 1870s Mexico featuring a transgender soldier, to two girls falling in love while mourning the death of Kurt Cobain, forbidden love in a sixteenth-century Spanish convent or an asexual girl discovering her identity amid the 1970s roller-disco scene, All Out tells a diverse range of stories across cultures, time periods and identities, shedding light on an area of history often ignored or forgotten.
Hayden Thorne novels are being reissued. She specializes in YA LGBT romance novels, many with fantasy elements, but all of them well constructed and inventive. Iâve read almost all of her novels in this genre, and several are mentioned elsewhere on this blog. Just, please, check out this amazing authorâs work for some very creative takes on some of your favorite tropes, and ideas Iâve never read anywhere else.

The Unbinding of Mary Reade by Miriam McNamara
- A clever, romantic novel based on the true story of a girl who disguised herself as a boy to sail with the infamous pirates Anne Bonny and Calico Jackâand fell in love with Anne Bonny.
Thereâs no place for a girl in Maryâs world. Not in the home of her mum, desperately drunk and poor. Not in the household of her wealthy granny, where no girl can be named an heir. And certainly not in the arms of Nat, her childhood love who never knew her for who she was. As a sailor aboard a Caribbean merchant ship, Maryâs livelihoodâand her safetyâdepends on her ability to disguise her gender.
At least, thatâs what she thinks is true. But then pirates attack the ship, and in the midst of the gang of cutthroats, Mary spots something she never could have imagined: a girl pirate.
The sight of a girl standing unafraid upon the deck, gun and sword in hand, changes everything. In a split-second decision, Mary turns her gun on her own captain, earning herself the chance to join the account and become a pirate alongside Calico Jack and Anne Bonny.
For the first time, Mary has a shot at freedom. But imagining living as her true self is easier, it seems, than actually doing it. And when Mary finds herself falling for the captainâs mistress, she risks everythingâher childhood love, her place among the crew, and even her life.
Breathlessly romantic and brilliantly subversive, The Unbinding of Mary Reade is sure to sweep readers off their feet and make their hearts soar.

A Light Amongst Shadows (Dark is the Night series Book 1) by Kelley York and Rowan Altwood
This whole series is gold, but here is the information on the first novel...
James Spencer is hardly the typical troubled youth who ends up at Whisperwood School for Boys. Instead of hating the strict schedules and tight oversight by staff, James blossoms, quickly making friends, indulging in his love of writing, and contemplating the merits of sneaking love poems to the elusive and aloof William Esher. The rumours about Williamâs sexuality and opium reliance are prime gossip material amongst the third yearsâŠrumours that only further pique Jamesâ curiosity to uncover what William is really like beneath all that emotional armor. And, when the normally collected William stumbles in one night, shaken and ranting of ghosts, James is the only one who believes him. James himself has heard the nails dragging down his bedroom door and the sobs echoing in the halls at night. He knows others have, too, even if no one will admit it. The staff refuses to entertain such ridiculous tales, and punishment awaits anyone who brings it up. Their fervent denial and the disappearance of students only furthers Jamesâ determination to find out what secrets Whisperwood is hidingâŠespecially if it prevents William and himself from becoming the next victims.
Originally, this list was going to include professors too, but they were already on a list and May/December romances will be on the list for May.
Adding a link for a list of best LGBT fantasy romances in the YA genre, because they have several novels with historical themes that I know friends/fellow readers I know, have enjoyed.
