Hey trekkies! I started writing out Data's "Ode to Spot" using magazine letters. This part took me a while, and I'm not sure if it's worth continuing. (It's very much giving serial killer after all)

Thoughts? I'm unwilling to cut up my Trek magazines for my collaging, so this is probably the only thing I'll contribute to the fandom lol

Bad news besties, the unbearable headaches I've been having throughout my poisoning situation went away when I drank caffine 😳

Listen. I know this is positive time, and I do not want to take away from positive time I will be positive I promise okay, but this week has been rough and today sucked really bad lol

I ended up going to work for a bit even though I dont feel fully recovered and I really wish I hadn't. Today kinda just turned into this confluence of negativity. I feel very disoriented as a result of sleeping for 4 days and driving makes me feel further from my fellow man than I already do. I genuinely dont understand what goes on in peoples minds. Then the pita place I trusted to not harm me was closed cuz sunday, which I always forget because I'm Vulcan pilled and days dont hold special meaning for me

After that was like, a couple of random things that made me feel really overlooked and unaccomplished which isn't normal for me. I dont typically care too much what people think but I guess I was primed to be upset. The specifics aren't really worth going into but its just like, I see people do something and everyone go wow thats awesome, and then I'm like, bro I have been doing that and no one gives a fuck when I do it. Even within my irl friend groups and back in my family when I still talked to any of my family I always felt this very pronounced sense of no one gives a shit what you're excited about dude. I start talking about something I like and everyone stares at the floor or their phones silently till I stop. But that doesn't happen when other people talk about things. I do not feel kinship with other humans, I feel very different and lost and confused and hungry and also incompatible with society

Its like in TNG when Data gives a time estimate and he only gives like days and hours or something and then stops, and everyone is confused. Riker goes no minutes seconds or milliseconds Mr. Data? And he turns around and goes "I have noticed a certain... annoyance with my level of specificity at times"

And in the same way, over time Ive just learned to talk less. Which isnt entirely bad cuz William Shakesman said brevity is the soul of wit I guess. I've also been noticing that when I'm alone I dont really emote much. Like I need other peoples vibes to mimic. Teacher give me the Autism test I swear I'll pass!!!!!!

ANYWAY negativity aside, I am still improving health wise. I'm spending more time sitting by the back door looking outside rather than being on my phone cuz text has been making me dizzy, and outside is nice right now. And once I got home from work I spent an hour-ish practicing the first world stages of Mario Wonder to get faster and remember 10 coin locations and that game makes me feel happy inside. That game is so perfect they literally thought of everything

Also my current Barony run is a Vampire Conjurer named Dracula Flow and thats going insanely well. Not gonna overexplain but one thing is that Vampires are weak to water and I found boots of water walking very early. I just need to stock up on blood and I'll be movin different

Ah, the Star Trek movie posters: a study in just what various artists think William Shatner’s face looks like. A Star to Steer Her By is sitting down this week to really get a good look at the posters (okay, mainly the official theatrical posters, since you’ll see that movies tend to have myriad versions) and consider this: if we saw this poster, would we want to see this movie? Or more often: whose face is this supposed to be?

Star Trek I: The Motion Picture

As Jake says on the podcast, the best thing about The Motion Picture is the marketing, as we discussed in both our tagline and title card posts previously. Like the movie, the poster is visually interesting, colorful, and dynamic. We’re still sold on this one.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

Always good to see Khan! And while we’re distracted for a minute by the Enterprise firing on Regula I for some reason and by the people popping out of Khan’s pants, this is otherwise a very captivating image with slightly more readable text than its title card!

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock

We are STILL confused by this one. For one, the color contrast is all a little samey and hard to really find focus on. But we have been debating who those figures at the bottom are supposed to be and coming up blanker than Spock’s memory.

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home

Extra points for featuring the whole crew on the poster for a change! With its bold colors, eye-catching landmark, and way better tagline than the official one, this all really works for us! Now if it also had some whales, it’d basically be perfect.

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier

I’d place this one fairly in the middle of the impressions overall. It’s definitely got movement (maybe too much movement?) and it knows how to make a “V” in many different ways! Is the tagline “Adventure and Imagination Will Meet at the Final Frontier” even worse than the official one? You decide.

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country

Y’all like the “Praxis Effect” explosion? Cuz this poster got you a whole bunch of Praxis Effect explosions! It’s definitely solid, with some great contrasts in colors, placement of text, and a very foreboding General Chang. 

Star Trek: Generations

Yawnfest. The colors are so muted and dreamy that we just want to go to sleep. Where’s the intrigue in this poster? All we glean from it is that Kirk and Picard are both in the movie, and frankly, that’s not enough. Well, it is enough if we’re being realistic here, but not for a poster!

Star Trek: First Contact

If you put some Borg stuff on a poster, people will see it. So kudos to the artist for really giving us exactly what we like from this movie: Picard, Data, resistance being futile, and a real sense of tension. This poster tells me they know their audience, possibly by assimilation.

Star Trek: Insurrection

There was some love and some meh in our discussion of this one. It’s the first one without any crew member faces, for what that’s worth. And do we really care about this Amadeus-style space face? No really? Do we? Read our favorites and least favorites below to find out where this one falls!

Star Trek: Nemesis

Another love/hate relationship with this poster: some of us love it and some of us hate it. The green wispy stuff is nice and the font is way better. Shinzon looks intriguing AF, but is it enough? Do we really need Data and Picard or would just Shinzon be better? AND WHERE’S OUR DAMN SHIP?

Star Trek (2009)

While all the newer movies each have about ten posters each, this is the main theatrical one and it’s super boring. Once you figure out what you’re looking at (oh, it’s the ship!), you come to accept that the marketers know that all they need to do is say it’s Star Trek and people will see it no matter what. And sadly, they’re right.

Star Trek: Into Darkness

This movie’s main poster is… fine, I guess. That’s all.

Star Trek: Beyond

At least Beyond makes for a pretty poster. It strikes me as very classic sci-fi and I can’t put my finger on why. But we appreciate the colors and the clouds and the upward movement of the thing. There’s something pretty and optimistic and futurey about this one that strikes us as very Star Trek.

Chapter 14

“Well, at least we know your parents could hire him to clean their ceilings if he stays stuck up there.”

“You’re not helping, Tucker,” Danny snapped at him from his spot on the ceiling.

More amused than surprised anymore, he just let Sam continue to try to help Danny change back to his human form while he worked on his own project. When Sam messaged him earlier that there was an issue, he hadn’t expected to walk into Sam’s room and find Danny, in all his ghostly glory, sitting cross-legged on the ceiling above Sam’s bed and having a panic attack. After taking in the absurdity of the situation, he tried for several minutes to help Sam somehow get him down. When all rescue attempts failed, mostly because Danny couldn’t seem to hold on to anything they threw at him, Sam moved to a different tactic. She hoped getting him to relax would somehow help.

Since that wasn’t his forte, Tucker decided his way of helping would be to finish reviewing the information he got from Plasmius while making comments about his friend’s predicament. Although he knew the digs annoyed Danny and Sam, he needed to do it for his own sanity.

Up until this point, Tucker really hadn’t registered the paranormal as being truly real. Sure, they did get abducted by a crazed ghost and then attacked by an even crazier ghost, but the more time passed without a ghostly incident, he had almost rationalized it as some stress induced hallucination. Almost being the key word. He knew his best friend had been fundamentally changed by the event, but other than the freak out at school and his now permanently chilly skin, Danny hadn’t done anything ghostly until now. Speaking of which…

“How exactly did you end up like this?” he questioned moments before Danny finally fell from the ceiling and landed face first on Sam’s bed. “You okay, dude?”

“More okay then I was when I was stuck on the ceiling,” he sighed as moved himself to the edge of the bed. His unnatural green eyes scanned the room as if searching for something. “I’m like this because of Plasmius.”

“Wait, wait? That’s a pretty big thing to neglect to mention.”

“I’m sorry I got distracted by discovering I was walking around in my ghost form or whatever you want to call it.”

“Don’t antagonize him, Tucker. That seems to make things worse,” Sam scolded as she pointed at Danny, who started to float again. “See? But that is pretty important.”

Danny huffed as he experimentally shifted, making it look like he was just lying on his stomach… in mid-air. Seemingly alright with the position, probably because he was only about a foot above the bed, he continued. “Look, I was planning on immediately telling you guys as soon as Tucker arrived, but I panicked when I realized I couldn’t change back. But since that doesn’t seem to want to change any time soon, I guess I just explain what happened.”

Once Danny was done, Tucker let out a whistle. “That’s some story. Glad he let you go, but it’s really creepy that he can just pluck you into that other world when he wants.”

“Why was he here in the first place?” Sam asked as she worked up enough courage to sit near where Danny was still floating. “That’s what’s bugging me about it. Was he just really here for information?”

“That’s what I don’t get either. Whoa! I’d like it if my body would make up… its mind?” As Danny fell onto the bed once again, a blinding light suddenly washed over him. Once it faded, he was back in his human form. “Well, at least that fixes that problem for now.”

Deciding not to comment on his friend’s obvious relief, Tucker somewhat changed the direction of the conversation. “At least Plasmius confirmed he’s interested in Vlad Master’s companies for something nefarious. Most of what I’ve gotten so far on that data are files on different employees.”

Danny’s eyes lit up at the statement. “Oh, I forgot to tell you. Vlad’s in town.”

“That’s convenient,” Sam dryly stated after she shared a look with Tucker. “Why’s he here?”

“Apparently, when my parents asked him for help getting some information, he decided he needed to be directly involved. He was visiting when I got up.” He glanced down and wrung his hands before adding, “But he seemed really off today.”

“Off how?”

“He gave me literal chills. I mean, if I think about it, that’s happened when ghosts were around, but not people. He also seemed off… like he was a different person.”

Unnerved, Tucker placed his PDA on Sam’s desk. “I hate to bring this up, but didn’t you say that thing that attacked you was able to change how it looked?”

Danny’s eyes widened briefly before he shook his head. “I… I don’t think that’s it. It was close, but there was still something off about how it looked. It also didn’t feel the same… the chill was different. Vlad felt… Vlad felt like Plasmius but not as strong? I don’t know how to explain it.”

“You mentioned that chill before when you freaked out because of Maura… do you think you can sense other ghosts now?” Tucker felt himself grin despite the situation. “I mean, cuz if you can, that’s really useful. I’d like to be able to stay on the complete other side of the city from where that creepy thing is.”

“Maybe? I certainly didn’t notice anything like it when we were trapped or escaping from Plasmius… but he did say something about how that’s possible.” A thoughtful expression briefly crossed his face, until he gave a wry grin. “Fat load of good it does if it only goes off when something is like ten feet away.”

“Darn. Well, still let me know if you notice anything else weird. I’d like a head start over anything that might harm these good looks.”

After their initial discussion of what happened, the rest of the time was spent seeing if Danny could get any sort of control over his ghost form. It took a while, but he did manage to find the preverbal trigger for the change. Via a couple hours under Sam’s Spartan-equse training, he was finally able to change to and from on command. While he hoped he’d have a chance to work on more of his abilities, it was definitely a success.’

Around dinner, he and Tucker left Sam’s and headed to their own respective houses. While his parents were relieved to see him before sundown, he couldn’t return the feeling. Vlad was still in the house. According to his parents, the businessman would be staying with them in the guest room for a while.

“A while? How long’s a ‘while’?” he questioned as he looked for something to drink in the fridge.

“Well, that’s up to Vlad,” his mother replied as she added a few shakes of something to what smelled like stew. Vlad and his father were still in the lab. “While he’s not entirely certain how long he will be able to remain away from his businesses, he’s hoping to be able to stay for a couple weeks.”

Unhappy with that answer, Danny grabbed his drink and disappeared into his bedroom. If he was honest, he wanted to practice more with his abilities. It would be a shame not to with how much progress he made earlier, but he wasn’t exactly certain what tools his dad and Vlad might be using. Some of them where supposedly able to detect differences in energy levels. Without knowing the specifics of his abilities, he really didn’t want to clue them in.

Actually, was he ever going to tell his parents? That was a good question. Right now, when he didn’t have much control or understanding over anything, it didn’t seem like a good idea. Perhaps down the road? Maybe. Actually, maybe they might have so information regarding what happened to him.

A little later, his parents called him down for dinner. For him, it was a relatively normal affair, save for the chills Vlad kept giving him. Seriously, what was up with that? Vlad had been a fixture in his life for years, and there was never an issue before. Maybe Plasmius somehow influenced him or something? He guessed it was possible. There were legends about ghosts doing stuff like that, but he had no idea how to even begin figuring that out.

After dinner, he once again retreated to his room. Frustrated, he decided a few hours of Doomed would be a good distraction from everything.

…

Right around three am, something woke Danny. Rubbing his eyes, he realized he fell asleep gaming. Stretching, he turned off the game before checking one of his drawers for clean pjs. Deciding it wasn’t worth it, he headed to his bed only to stop when his breath misted in front of him.

Now wide awake, he stopped and listened. There were the normal sounds of the furnace and his dad’s snores. Wait, the furnace? Then why could he see his breath a moment ago? Spooked, he opened his door as quietly as possible and stuck his head out into the hallway.

Nothing seemed out of place. No one was in the hall. There was no light from his parents’ room or the spare bedroom Vlad was using. Deciding something still didn’t seem right, he crept down the hall and peaked down the stairs.

Eyes, dark eyes with a faint red glow, peaked out at him from the darkness of the living room. Knowing whatever it was saw him, he panicked and ran towards his parents’ room. “Mom! Dad! There’s something in the house!” he yelled as he frantically beat on the locked door. Of course it was one of those nights.

“Oh my god, what is that thing?” Vlad’s voice and the growl that followed forced his attention to the staircase. The sickly gray color of its skin made it somehow stand out in the shadows. The creature, the same one Danny encountered in the alleyway, stood in all its horrible glory at the top of the stairs. Its face was twisted in a grotesque snarl, and it swayed slightly. With an uneasy jolt, Danny realized the thing seemed to be debating who to go after first.

At the sound of the lock on his parents’ door turning, the thing lunged forward. Danny barely had time to register his mother pulling him into the room while his father roared, “Eat this!”

The familiar whine of one of his parents’ blasters powering up was followed by a blinding green blast and then another. As his parents decided to chase the thing, he curled up behind the door. The sounds of the blasts and something else, something unnatural, crashing into furniture could be heard from the downstairs.

How did that thing get in the house? Better yet, how did it find him? It was his fault. He needed to help, but what could he do? He had no ability to fight against it. Heck, he still didn’t know what it was other than dangerous and evil.

When the sounds in the downstairs stopped, he held his breath and waited. A sigh of relief escaped him when his mother called for him and Vlad. Not caring he was a teenager and by default hated hugs from family members, raced to his mother’s side and embraced her. Understanding he was frightened, she rubbed his back and reassured him she was fine.

“Sorry to interrupt,” the light snapped on to reveal blast marks, destroyed furniture, and Vlad appraising the scene from the bottom step, “but what exactly was that thing? Should I contact the police?”

Embarrassed someone saw him, Danny quickly let go and retreated a few steps. His mother smiled at him before replying, “It’s already been taken care of.” She pointed to what Danny recognized as the button of one of the alarm systems; it was flashing. “Jack’s checking the perimeter to make sure that thing is gone. In the meantime, I’m going to make us hot chocolate.”

“But what if that thing comes back? Surely Jack wouldn’t just leave you alone.”

She flashed him a grin as she held up a miniature blaster. “Thank you for being concerned, but I’m actually the better shot between the two of us.”

After glancing at Vlad, who seemed both dumbfounded and proud, Danny hurried into the kitchen after his mother. He really didn’t want to leave her side if that thing came back.

“Danny,” his mother stated after they were seated at the kitchen table with hot chocolate in hand, “be honest with me, was that the same thing you saw in the alleyway?”

He took a sip of his drink before answering her. “I… I think so. I mean, I’m not exactly sure if it was the same thing or not, but it looked similar.”

“You’re telling me that’s the thing you’re researching?” Vlad sounded surprised, but Danny noticed how tightly he gripped his mug. Why did he seem angry? “That thing was an abomination.”

His mother nodded. “While there are some stories regarding things like that in folklore, most of the recent ones seem to be more fiction than fact, so Jack and I tended to disregard them.” She sent him an apologetic smile, “However, with Danny’s report, we decided to look into it and didn’t like what we found. That’s why we reached out because we needed to get the resources to verify the data.”

“What do you mean you didn’t like what you found?” His whole body felt icy again, but this time, it seemed to be from fear and not some paranormal creature.

“I want to verify something with the officers,” she glanced at the clock on the wall before muttering, “when they finally get here first. However, if Jack didn’t manage to get it, I’m not sure if it’ll come back or not. We definitely wounded it,” she pointed to a spot in the living room where something wet, dark, and faintly glowing could be seen, “but I don’t know if that was enough to ward it off or if it’s vengeful enough to return.”

“But why was it here?”

“If I may?” Vlad glanced at his mother, who nodded. “If it was in fact the same creature Daniel saw, it may have come for him, or, it simply could have been drawn to the house. Forgive me, but you do have a lot of ectoplasm and other potential energy sources on hand.”

“Hmm… we have been meaning to update our storage devices. That can easily be done, but if Danny is a target, that would be much harder to fix.” His mother reached out and gently put her hand on his. “Sweetie, don’t take this the wrong way, but your father and I are worried you might have been changed because of your disappearances.”

That was putting it lightly, he ruefully thought. However, instead of agreeing, he asked her to explain what she meant.

“Well, you know we theorized you temporarily slipped into a different dimension when you were younger? It’s possible that somehow altered you. Pass reports of those ‘spirited away’ often report the person was somehow changed. Since before you seemed fine, save for the times we caught you staring as if you saw something we couldn’t, we figured you may have developed a sensitivity to the paranormal.”

He nodded. That made sense. Although, he was embarrassed his parents picked up on how he sometimes saw those shadows. Apparently he didn’t do nearly as good of a job as he thought at keeping that a secret.

His mother bit her lip before continuing. “But, this past time… something changed. I know you told the police you were abducted by a person, but the complete disappearance and then reappearance… and that none of you who disappeared could be tracked… and the injuries… and how that poor boy was found… it never made sense it was a human. And when you came back, the changes in your vitals, we knew there was something more to it. You don’t have to tell me anything if you’re not ready,” she added when she noticed his panicked expression, “but whatever changed might have made you something like beacon to creatures of other worlds.”

His mouth felt dry. His parents actually suspected there was something off about him, and they just accepted it? Should he tell them how much he really changed? No, Vlad was in the house. He didn’t need to know anything about it. However, he could start probing for some of the answers he wanted. “If… if I have changed, how…?”

“We’re not exactly sure what will happen in the long run,” she replied as she picked up on his train of questioning. “Old accounts vary, and it’s difficult distinguishing fact and legend. Anyways, Danny I just want to verify the thing that attacked us tonight and whoever abducted you on the camping trip are not the same thing.”

He violently shook his head. “No, they’re completely different…”He debated with himself for a moment. Should he tell her about Plasmius appearing? Or the thing Clockwork discovered? Or the horde that attacked Sam, Tucker, and their classmates on the way back? “At least, whoever took me, Sam, and Tucker was completely different. I don’t know what grabbed the others.” That was true enough.

Vlad remained unusually quiet during the exchange, but unlike other times where he seemed disinterested or involved, this time it seemed like he was mulling over something. Also, Danny hadn’t missed the way his eyes narrowed when he added on the information about the camping abduction.

A knock at the door spooked everyone. They turned to see his dad opening the door followed by a couple police officers. “I found the police!” he said with a grin. “They thought it was another false alarm.”

“False alarm? False alarm?” His mother stood and marched over to the officers who were taking stock of the damage with wide eyes. “My family gets attacked, and you have the nerve to think it was a false alarm? If my husband and I didn’t have the means to defend ourselves, we would have been killed!”

Danny just sighed and continued sipping his drink as he watched his mother scold the officers. His dad joined him. Both of them knew it was better to let her get it out of her system than to try to get involved. Besides, he’d probably never get to see police officers get chewed out like that ever again. Now if only he had some popcorn.

Note: if it hadn’t been implied earlier, Maddie and Jack are going to be involved/decent parents in this fic. It makes sense with how this story is laid out – their son has gone mysteriously missing 3 times. They try to keep an eye on him.

From where I'm standing, as of Ultrabots part 1, it looks like the Carte Blanche is neck deep in a setup, and I'm very concerned that Rita has just plugged her nose and dived even deeper into it.

So we know a whole bunch of their current situation was planned. The planet they're on was specifically chosen to be the place where they landed, and it was chosen for a reason.

RITA: The Carl Blank is still all busted up from when we crashed on this planet three days ago. Luckily, we hit the ocean near a deserted island, and everyone’s fine. Even though that’s not as excitin’ a story.

We got food, and water, and there ain’t even any turbo-sharks or bloody feet. Who knew that life on a planet in the middle of nowhere would be so boring? (Ultrabots)

So a location with ample food, water, and shelter, plus the supplies left by the wreckage of their ship.

RITA: I feel like… I remember hitting the ocean. Yeah, the water was warm and sting-y, and I couldn’t move. And then someone—

JET: Grabbed you and pulled you to shore. Is that right?

RITA: So it was you! I thought you were the one who saved me, Mista Jet, I was sure—

JET: It was not me, Rita. I have the same memory — as does everyone else I’ve spoken to. And the Ruby 7 was chained to the ground when the Carte Blanche crashed, but when I awoke it was on shore. With us.

Very clearly, they were steered to this planet, toward this specific island, and then fished out of the water and dumped on shore. Along with the Ruby 7, for some reason.

Why the Ruby 7, though? To keep them occupied? Did the people who dropped it and them off not realize its importance? But if they didn't, then why go to that effort in the first place?

I'm curious if the shapeshifter bot's other purpose was to strip out certain important bits of the ship that might be necessary for getting it fully functional. Whether it was able to fulfill that function before it was thwarted by Vespa is another story.

I'm pretty vocal about the fact that I think Dark Matters is the big bad of this season. The shapeshifting bot smacks of The Day That Wouldn't Die and the robotic apparition of Annie Wire. Also, the fact that they've been dumped/trapped on a deserted island planet brings to mind another Dark Matters tactic:

WIRE: Dark Matters is also willing to offer you protection.

JUNO: I’ll pass. I’m guessing your “protection” looks like a new name and a one-room apartment out on some asteroid a billion miles from nowhere. (Murderous Mask)

And again:

WIRE: You had better be. Either you take this case with our assistance, or you and I start talking about what asteroid you might want to live on. I hear XZ2B-21-Z is very nice, this time of century. It has an excellent view of Pluto. (Murderous Mask)

But the fact that I suspect Dark Matters brings me to Rita. Because I don't think Dark Matters necessarily knows what the Carte Blanche crew is after right now. They seemed to only really cross paths by accident initially-- and at the end of Tools of Rust, the most important thing Dark Matters knew was that the Carte Blanche had M'tendere's deactivation key. But that's a big deal, and one certainly worth knocking them down and locking them up for surveillance.

Which brings us to Rita.

She's a technical genius-- I mean, for god's sake, she dismantled a completely foreign technology, reverse engineered it into three separate mind-controlled robots, attached them to a rocket, and shot them across space to a server farm-- within the space of ten hours. That's incredible.

But there are some things she doesn't think through quite as much. Like the fact that this is all a trap. Something that Buddy likely has figured out, thanks to what Vespa witnessed.

I think that Dark Matters followed Rita's robots to the server farm. Their very sudden takeover doesn't sound to me like it was in the works for a very long time-- I think it was taken over specifically because Rita's bots arrived there.

So, I tried to calculate Control...

... and its Epic Games deal, with the help of my certified smooth brain™ and probably incorrect sources. I started this last night hella tired and with a headache, I have finished it up today hella tired and with a headache, and this is what I produced: bullshit! :D But hey, at least double checked bullshit that’s open for discussion and contribution and expansion. Also, I probably won’t list the sources because a) I’m lazy and b) I didn’t have to dig thaaat deep down to find all this so if you really wanna know you could probably hit google with it as well. Anyhow here we go lol So, the initial thought which got all of this rolling was the 2020-wrap-up-post Remedy linked on their twitter, and Epic’s linked publishing announcement in it: studios Remedy, Playdead and GenDesign will release their next next-gen games with Epic. Now, we all know Remedy are working on some sort of Alan Wake-ish thing as we speak (right? right?? god I hope so), which meanssss our boy will most likely be an Epic exclusive. Which makes me kinda sad because, well. I’m deep in Steam’s ass. Hell, I waited for Control for a full year before I played it because they can pry the Steam version from my cold dead hands. So I asked myself... was it worth it for them? How much money did they throw at Remedy (and 505 Games) to have them play along? Would they have reached more people from the get-go if they had released it on Steam right away? Did the individual programmer, designer, writer, artist, person behind it profit from this at all? (Also, like, about the rights and copyright thing,,,,, you’d think they could have learned from Alan Wake and its IP belonging to Microsoft and so not really being able to do anything more with it because they don’t ‘own’ it and shit) buuut anyway that’s not the point of this post, now it’s time to do some MATH BABEY

Ok, let’s start with some things we know. Facts. Figures. Data. Turns out my initial question, how much money was involved, could be answered by doing one (1) google search: according to Wikipedia, Epic gave Remedy and 505 Games €9.49mio. The total budget for the game was €26.9mio over the course of 3 years of development. We know that as of December 2020, over 2mio copies of the game were sold, with November 2020 being the best-selling month ever since its initial release in August 2019. This is where question 1) comes into play: how many of those 2 million copies were sold in 2019 and how many in 2020? Stay tuned, I think I found out.

We know that Remedy gets to keep 45% of the revenue, which, I assumed, means that 505 keeps the remaining 55% (probably a lot more going on there but shhh). We know that Control’s sales cooked up €17.84mio in 2019 (so months September – December), €17.7mio of those in the first month alone (O.O). Side note: because it came out at the very end of August, I’ll ignore that month and declare September the first sales month.

We know that 60% of sales in 2019 were digital ones (aka Epic Store, mostly), 40% physical ones (consoles PS4 and XB1), while in 2020, only 10% of sales were physical and a whopping 90% digital; which is people on Epic who wanted to get their hands on the first DLC and – you guessed it – the Steam release of the Ultimate Edition in August 2020.

Which begs question 2): what’s bigger, 60% of 2019 sales because ‘ooh shiny new game’, or 90% of 2020 sales because ‘yay steam release’? The answer may look obvious, but you have to take into account the dropping price, which I also researched for your pleasure and enjoyment.

For this I used a German website called idealo.de, which focuses on looking for the best deals for basically anything you can buy on the internet, and it also gives you diagrams that describe at which point in time the product was at which exact price. This is what it gave me: - release price: €60 - December 2019: €41 (PS4)/€44 (XB1) - mid-2020: €30 - Ultimate Edition release: €30 - December 2020: €14 (PS4)/€18 (XB1)/€30 (Ultimate Editions) At this point I was like “lol hold on i need chocolate for this cuz i’ll be here for some time *sweating*”

To continue this mess™, I see more questions: 3) How many employees does Remedy have, which positions do they work in and what are their salaries? 4) How many employees does 505 have, which positions and salaries do they have? 5) What’s the total revenue that Control has generated so far?

And also some more stuff like, are my numbers accurate, am I even grasping these concepts correctly, are there even more people involved or am I just trying to explain complete crap (yes) but let’s just ignore all of that shall we. At that point I went “oh shit what have i gotten myself into, this screen does not get my point across, i need pen and paper” and you know shit is gonna go DOWN when I do math on paper.

My paper math birthed the following calculation:

Following this up, we can calculate the end-of-2019 sales, if we set the price for September and October to €60, for November and December to approx. €45:

Now, you might notice that one of those numbers is big and the other is HUGE. Why might that be? Well...

- Covid19: everyone stayed at home and needed video games to play - More sale months of the year, naturally - dropping price: why get it for €60 when you can get it for 20 - Ultimate Edition: why buy it in June when you get more content in August aaaand... - it comes out on Steam.

With this in mind, let’s see what questions we can answer: 1) 661,110 copies in 2019; 1,338,889 copies in 2020 2) 60% digital sales in 2019 means 396,666 Epic copies; 90% digital sales in 2020 means 1,205,000 copies – most of it from Steam? Some of it? A good chunk? The bigger chunk? There’s no way of really knowing for sure but... you could read this into it. I definitely am. 3) Google told me Remedy had a little over 250 employees at the end of 2019... 4) ... and 505 has less than 100. I found no good sources for this, I think linkedin said 37, someone else said 50. I’ll just use the 50 figure, idk. No idea man. and for 5) I’ll contradict my point that the Steam release is what knocked the sales out of the park and assume that the number of sold copies stayed the same across all 12 months of 2020, which gives us this:

Start with the easier one to explain: Samuels doesn’t know shit. Amanda had to corrupt the poor bot (not that he didn’t literally ask her to). He doesn’t have (yet) any specific turn ons. He isn’t even sure he works that way. Thus far he’s controlled all functions himself, nothing really works or doesn’t work on its own. Now, his partner still enjoys trying it; she tries to grind on him when he meant for them to slow dance in their living room; reaches under the covers, grins like a cat, and strokes him.

“I don’t require it,”

“Does it feel good?”

“You don’t have to do anything, if you’d like to start–”

“Does it feel good?”

“….Yes.”

“Then I’m going to keep doing it.” 

Touch is so new to him that he adores it in any form; finds it fascinating that he has a want for touch though he lacks the hormones that drive humans to reproductive actions. There’s very little he doesn’t enjoy, but nothing specific. 

If you asked Amanda, however, what got his gears going, she’d immediately answer “He likes me on top.” 

Only once thus far has he reacted without control, and that was when Ripley struggles to explain with a straight face what she meant when she told him: “If you’re too busy with that stack of data sheets, I will do this myself and not let you join in when you decide to come to bed.” So…So she just…showed him what she meant instead. And did end up letting him join in, about as near to begging as Amanda Ripley would ever allow herself to get.

AS FOR HER….Amanda does not have a thing for androids. NOPE. She doesn’t. She’s half afraid that she does, between her lover and Data, but he just doesn’t count. Neither of them do. Sentience is a pre-req for her to go to bed with anyone, therefore she does not have a robot fetish. NOPE. Dirty talk worked on her when she was a little younger, but her new housemate is so…. Vulgarity doesn’t suit him. He’s naturally a gentleman, with a smoothness–despite the shyness–that she didn’t think he had in him. 

Once at Samuels new job, far from WY and anyone who’s ever worked with synths, there was an office party (he doesn’t get it, he just doesn’t; these are lame obligatory bullshit events and she doesn’t own a dress and you do not want me there I’m going to embarrass you) and Amanda was getting increasingly uncomfortable; both of them were feeling…less than confident since so many there were shocked they were together. She looks young, too hot for him damn. Ripley saw the looks that said clearly what is someone like that doing with a grunt like her? No  last-minute dress and hastily chosen lipstick could hide that. So. Contact. Hand holding so people stopped asking if they were together, and also for comfort. Eyes meeting over glasses, small smiles at various things others said; the two already had a myriad of private jokes, a mostly-shared sense of humor with them. 

Then his arm slips around her waist, she mirrors his action, their backs to the wall, she sneaks in a pinch and he startles. 

“whywouldyoudothathere?”

“You look tense. Want to find an empty office?”

“Yes I’m tense I—what? nO no I do not want to find–”

“OOOOh! Your office. I want to see it.”

“Not now you aren’t.” 

Damn his self control to hell, but a night of subtleties and seeing him in that suit and seeing him behave so human, and then their increased flirting and Amanda…he’s got to know what I’m thinking. On cue he hands her another glass of—-ice water.

“Please, luv, you look like a cat ready to pounce, cool off a little,” a sly glance at those who had been standing near them, assurance no one is looking, then a kiss below her ear and a low voice: “Wait until we get home. I promise I’ll see to it that its worth the wait.”

“You bastard.” the jab earned her another, decidedly chaster kiss on the forehead and a smile that made her unsure if she wanted to tear out his central power cable, or say to hell with the audience and make an effort to get him to the floor. 

Neither was a good choice at the moment. And its not her fault, she rationalizes, not her fault some pervert at WY made a robot that could do what he could do. Not her fault that who or whatever they modeled him after fit her like none of her previous male partners did, like whoever designed him made him for her or very nearly. 

Certainly not her fault that like all other functions, he could keep at it indefinitely if he wished, and as often as he wished, with little to no wait. Or that he had the ability to smile like that, or dance with her like this was eighteen-ninety-fucking-seven and that smooth bastard pulled her close by her hips at the end, very close, too close, enough to feel that he–

“I’m going to void your warranty when we get home,”

“I look forward to it.”

“You’re doing this on purpose.”

Cut to now; Ripley kissing him hard against the door of their apartment as he fumbles for the card-key, her hair a mess from having started this in the elevator; not sure how or when they got inside, but at some point he lost his jacket, and her dress is lifted over her head, and why are we in the hallway?

Some part of him was still aware, still knew that this wasn’t quite right, that he should have more control than this, but Ripley had pulled him by the necktie towards their room and the ended up on the hallway table. Or rather, she did. At moments. And she’s always a little vocal, enough that he knows when she’s enjoying his motions, but this is different, she’s vocal on her gasps, on the exhales as moans, even a pleased hum as she bites his shoulder, enough input for him to jolt back to senses, and any more and you’re going to hurt her.

He met her eyes for half a second,

“Harder.”

One wall-lamp loosened, two picture frames on the floor, and three angry shouts from neighbors later, Ripley’s arms are slack around his neck; his still resting at her waist. He’s nearly certain that she’ll have bruises on her hips and backside…and her neck. For obvious reasons, he didn’t care to see bruises on her throat left by an android, even if the android in question was himself, and the bruises were tidy bite marks rather than clumsy chokeholds. 

“That….. happened.” he said.

“Do you want it to happen again?”

“I think I lost control at some point,”

“You didn’t hurt me,” far from it, he thinks, looking at her please smile.

“I could have.”

“You didn’t.” She looks down and notices.

Both of them still have their formal shoes on, and though its been opened, he’s still in his dress shirt too, trousers on the floor.

“I…I’m sorry for the…”

“Ripped-out-of-an-erotic fuck against a wall? Please do not apologize for that.” she says, gently poking his chest as she edges off of the table and to stand on uneasy legs (still in her high-heels) on the floor. Her intention was to help him with his clothes, and a sense of dignity, but maybe that wasn’t a good idea.

“You enjoyed it?”

“Hell yes.”

“….You prefer intercourse…rougher?”

“Mmm sometimes. What did you think?”

“….I liked it.”

“A lack of control is scary…but its also nice sometimes. And I trust that you have some kind of protocol to back off before you actually hurt me. Trust yourself.”

“Everything you’ve been through, and you still trust me?”

“Unconditionally,” she answers without hesitation.  “You want to try this?”

“Anatomically, I don’t think that this would work exactly the same in a reversed position.”

“I meant…do you want me to lead through it? Maybe…maybe in half an hour?”

“That doesn’t sound very sure.”

“I am very sure, I’m merely unsure over how concerned I should be about the fact that I am.”

Amanda kissed him on the noes, laughing a little how his eyes crossed to focus in on her in confusion when she leaned in.

“You are the sweetest person I’ve ever met,” she took his hands and backed towards their room, a wide smile on her face.

“Half an hour you said?”

This chapter includes Pein’s and Kisame’s opinions of Akatsuki’s newest recruit!

Warning: goofy Akatsuki, also this chapter takes place after an amount of time skip

It takes one Kakuzu one look at Akatsuki’s poor money management, and it is with pure horror on his face that he snatches the position of treasurer (and the considerably hefty amount of money as well as its bank book) from Zetsu’s white fingers.

“If you don’t understand how money works, then why are you managing it?!” He says, the tone almost taking a shrill one that he thinks is entirely justified. The book is filled with doodles of poo, and Kakuzu doesn’t want to know why. Zetsu and his strange obsession of poop are not in his top list of the things he wants to know about.

Zetsu, the little fucker, simply shrugs his shoulders. His black half is missing, probably latching onto another aloe vera guy like the creep he is.

It still weird him out a little bit that Zetsu is not a single entity, but one of many.

Kakuzu rolls that thought—the thought that sounds like Hayato and his morning routine of reading the bible—away from him swiftly, like how he does everytime he gets new people speaking in his head in the voices of his past Family. Still, really, it’s strange that there’s only one Black Zetsu but so many White Zetsus. It’s jarring, a lot more than finding out that Yuni is apparently an alien.

(And he still thinks that’s something is wrong with the Zetsus).

(Particularly Black Zetsu).

(He is glad he doesn’t have to spend much time with the black half, really).

“Well, nobody wants to do it,” is Zetsu’s eloquent reply, and Kakuzu wonders why Pein didn’t just do it himself or, like, appoint Konan-san or something; the woman looks capable and responsible enough, definitely better than the poo obsessed white-person-cannibal-thing!

(He wonders if he was recruited because of his money managing skills).

(It can’t be, right?)

(Right!?)

(It must be because he’s cool or something, or because of his S-rank reputation, not his money managing skills!)

(He kills people for a living, for God’s sake!)

(Honestly, while the Tsunayoshi in him is insulted, Kakuzu can’t help but to preen. He does love money, so it’s nice to be acknowledged that he knows how to handle his babies).

Zetsu grins at him, and Kakuzu feels like he won’t like what comes out of Zetsu’s mouth later.

His intuition is spot on, of course.

“So I just took the position, cuz somebody has to, right? And besides,” he grins unrepentantly, “it’s fun to doodle on it.”

“…”

Kakuzu wonders if he’ll get marked as Akatsuki’s traitor if he burns Zetsu with his dying will flames. Zetsu is, after all, many. Losing one won’t be that bad. Losing one won’t hurt at all.

That’s right, Kakuzu thinks viciously, his hand lightly sparking flames. It’s just one, he won’t be missed that much.

“Please refrain from murder inside the headquarters, Kakuzu-san,” Konan’s smooth voice interrupts his murderous thoughts and Kakuzu pauses, the sparks of flames on his hands dying like blown candles. Konan’s eyes focus on them for a moment, finding it intriguing that she finds no smoke or burned clothing.

The miser turns to the only woman in the group (and a very pretty one at that) and stares at her with a gaze that conveys his very emotions and thoughts, particularly about Zetsu’s doodling habit, something that the White Zetsus only do when they’re bored.

(Well, Konan thinks, that, or they go out to eat some people.)

“While killing your partner isn’t really recommended,” Kakuzu raises an eyebrow at the leeway she gives him—not recommended doesn’t mean he’s not allowed to, after all—and listens as she continues, “it will be a hassle to clean it up here. If you wish to kill, cleaning the headquarters from the mess will be your responsibility.”

It is then her lips twitches upward for a second, betraying her amusement at this event, and Kakuzu has to wonder if this is her way to smile or smirk.

(It reminds him of Bianchi, somehow).

The woman’s yellow eyes gaze at his green ones for a little while, some sort of camaraderie passing between the both of them, before she nods and saunters away, probably figuring out that Kakuzu has listened to her words and won’t end up killing Zetsu (yet).

Kakuzu, after watching the woman’s retreating back, remembers the mess of an accounting book in his grasp, curses, and makes a beeline to his room to fix the data or… just… whatever can be salvaged and saved from this mess.

They both ignore Zetsu, who is pointing at himself and loudly protesting about the apparent worth of his life.

Pein doesn’t really know what to think about his newest treasurer.

Being someone who loves money almost as much as he loves his own life, Kakuzu is obviously doing his job fairly well (even if he’s a bit stingy when a request to buy something is esteemed one-sidedly as unnecessary). The traitor of Taki also manages to effortlessly juggle between his work as a treasurer and his missions—although with Akatsuki still being a rather new missing-nin organization, missions are still far and inbetween—as well as his hobby to collect bounties or, well, what he calls as vacation time.

Well, as effortlessly as he can, Pein guesses.

There were times when Kakuzu had to shoo Zetsu away when he was counting money and cataloguing the data while sitting in the headquarters’ lounge, or when he threw a book full of doodles of poo and biceps and muscles and even some poorly drawn genitalia to a snickering White Zetsu.

Kakuzu bought Zetsu a drawing book, sometime later. A thick one.

And coloring pencils.

And crayons.

Lots of crayons.

Pein won’t say it, but Kakuzu seems more like an exasperated father trying to maintain his difficult children than a murderous and blood thirsty missing-nin sometimes.

Kisame fits more into that “blood thirsty” picture, and even Pein finds him sometimes cooking in the kitchen with a blue apron decorated with a stitched picture of a shark and the words ‘fishes are friends’.

(Pein finds out later that it’s a gift from Kakuzu).

(Pein finds out Kakuzu likes to stitch, in which, okay, it fits his fighting style, but he also stitches things for fun, and now he seems more like a mom than anything).

(Pein finds out Kakuzu stitched a mini aloe vera Zetsu doll and gave it to Zetsu for safe keeping).

(The White Zetsus fight over it sometimes).

(Pein wonders if Kakuzu stitched him something and just haven’t found either the time or the guts to give it to him, because Konan got herself a mini Yahiko doll and she loves it).

(…Sometimes, he wonders if he recruited the wrong ninja to be in Akatsuki. Why is his newest recruit so domestic?)

(Kakuzu of Taki is an S-rank missing nin who steals hearts from his village’s elders, why is he so domestic?)

But Kakuzu is strong, and Pein acknowledges that. Not as strong as Pein with his Rinnegan, of course, but the man truly deserves the S-rank he gets within the bingo books.

His movements are swift and agile; he’s sure of his own power and is not overconfident. Kisame, who has gone with the miser to a few missions together, says the man has managed to finish the mission as quickly and efficiently as he could, sometimes even ending it in one blow, probably making the blue skinned man pout over the loss of his chance to fight.

And then, there’s the matter about his flames…

Zetsu and Konan both had told him about the sparking of flames on Kakuzu’s hands—flames that curiously enough didn’t leave smoke or burn marks after they disappeared—that appears whenever he gets fairly irritated or tense.

A kekkei genkai, perhaps, and of a new kind as well, considering his family didn’t have such a thing, according to the information Zetsu gathered about the miser.

That, or it’s just a new jutsu the guy came up with in his long life as a shinobi.

But he hasn’t exactly used the flames for some reason.

Not on missions, where he totally can handle them without the help of his ‘flames’, and not even during the spars he sometimes does with Kisame and rarely, Konan herself.

(She seems to be quite fond of him, although Pein doesn’t know why. He rarely ever interacts with the missing nin outside of necessity, after all).

It makes Pein… curious.

As a leader, he probably can inquire the miser about it and demand a demonstration about the flames.

But Pein knows Kakuzu loves his freedom, the so-called Vacation Time and Leisure inbetween Missions, as Kakuzu himself so eloquently put it.

Or what’s left of it anyway.

He probably will be reluctant to do it, considering he hasn’t truly talked about it to shown it to anyone else blatantly. Although Kakuzu has shown that he is wary of Pein and his power.

If worst comes to worst, he’ll probably lose a very skilled treasurer.

Well, whatever, Pein muses, closing his eyes.

As long as it doesn’t affect the organization and its goals negatively, he shall not bother.

He believes the time will come when it gets revealed to him, anyway.

Soon, soon.

Kisame thinks Kakuzu is amusing.

True, he lives up to his reputation. Kakuzu is curt, ruthless and definitely lethal. Undeniably, he’s also a really skilled shinobi. In Kisame’s standards, he’s an important, strong ally, and has the potential to be a formidable opponent.

(Although Kakuzu is funny, too, since he saw Kisame looking at the mini Zetsu doll and offered to make him one if Kisame wanted, and when he said he didn’t need such a useless thing, the man got up and made him a freaking apron.

Then Kisame saw a small shark plush sitting in the lounge’s sofa and he laughed).

But Kisame is also not blind, thank you very much.

Although Akatsuki hasn’t made any real moves toward their goal in acquiring the jinchuuriki—save for the three tails in the Mizukage who is already effectively under Uchiha Madara’s influence—it has begun to collect information regarding them.

He’s seen Kakuzu’s flickers of emotions—emotions that are quickly and expertly hidden underneath a blank mask—when he saw the jinchuuriki’s information, and Kisame knows why.

Children.

Some of the jinchuuriki are children.

And Kakuzu, ruthless as he may be, is largely known for his penchant of sparing children, even young Genin or Chuunin that he seems to judge through his own criteria, because he killed some twelve year olds and let some others in the same age live before, and sometimes even women or pregnant women in particular.

This is one of the reasons as to why civilians don’t hesitate much when they approach Kakuzu for mission requests.

Out of all troublesome traits to have, he has to just have his fondness of children.

There will be some problems with the extraction, when the time comes, considering Kakuzu’s apparent weakness toward children in general.

Or, we can just wait until the children are old enough, Kisame thinks with a grin. That way, Kakuzu won’t be adverse to capturing and killing them, would he?

If there’s anything Kisame knows, Kakuzu respects and finds thrill in fighting strong and skilled shinobi. Older jinchuuriki are bound to fit those criteria. Kakuzu will find no qualms in fighting them; he’ll even be honored, if Kisame’s predictions of his traits are spot on.

Still, it’s a long way to go, he muses. Akatsuki still needs to find a name of its own to be feared among the Hidden Villages, to gather enough information and funds, to gather more members, before they can think of capturing those jinchuuriki.

For now, he’ll settle with gathering and getting to know new members, as well as watching how things go around the amusing miser.

Still, that plush toy, though, pffft.

Pein thinks Kakuzu is weird, and rather intriguing, especially his flames, while Kisame thinks Kakuzu is both funny and also someone that could potentially turn against Akatsuki simply bc of Kakuzu’s (or Tsunayoshi’s, really) fond feelings about children.

It’s Tsunayoshi’s memories at fault. He keeps on remembering Lambo, I-pin and Fuuta.

(Also, he cannot contain his need to make a plush shark. He just can’t. The temptation is too high).

Is a great indicator and you heard it from Greg directly, so I’m you know it must be true, so next question, how do you see I mean you’ve been around for a little bit with the Amazon FBA seen right how do you see the Amazon FBA, landscape changing I’m kind of since you started and what can people do maybe to stay a bit a bit ahead of the, ahead of the Curve, good question I don’t like you said several questions you have your cabin cuz this is, little bit more like, thinking where can I buy Q to ask my pendulum, absolutely let’s do it, i’ve started out selling wholesale products then I got, private label thing when I first got to the private label thing, There weren’t very many, doing it, bluewater Lake open, it was like this pretty easy to Launch, products not other like private label sellers out there, french, an excellent opportunity, question was, you know what we had where do I say going out tonight like, you like smarter, more data-driven in like better, with any industry what it begins to mature it’s kind of like weeds out like, the people who aren’t really like putting any time or really sloppy or aren’t you, outright that that’s with any industry as amateurs, now we have to be smarter you know I’m a very like data-driven person and I’m like, as far as I can, the numbers understanding the numbers understand, working, what you sales, jungle Scout obviously helps with that because other sources that help with that a lot too, like I mentioned Google Trends you know I keep, great sources for like data-driven, Research for understanding of things, i actually don’t think it’s going to get, most warlike, adjective, then what it is right now, do you want my honest, amazon is like growing at a really fast rate, right now, education or public knowledge about the opportune, nBA right now, in my opinion it’s probably like kind of peaches words that, turn off that, going to try, watch webinars like this I am can understand what’s working right now on that kind of suffer, that’s going to kind of like stay the same substance, we got any like, getting more competitive, we just have to be smarter in, yeah I do the things I probably like all your students are the things that you were doing now like, get out like optimizing rppc like a happy life, pictures of small things that make a big difference at the, 44 years ago mine I’ve done it would have like one picture in, Father’s Day like, and is expecting to become a millionaire overnight right, something else it’s maybe worth pointing out here to guys is, you know the USA Market every kind of things that Amazon is like being this like worldwide B striping Amazon actually hasn’t, answered certain markets right so we still have, shooter massive expansion Amazon has big plans to enter the Australian market right which is millions and millions, the people so, as far as Amazon being you know over competitive or saturated or like an opportunity of the past, really you heard from Greg you heard it from me that is absolutely not true, there’s so much opportunity so many millions of different in a one-off niche products different markets in Amazon still has, an expanded into, and so it’s absolutely as much of a, opportunity maybe it’s not quite as easy as it was years ago before you know more people knew about it but by gnome, Means is it over it’s absolutely driving and there’s so much opportunity.

Also thank you for that answer let’s go on to the next one so this is kind of a long-winded question but it’s one that I get all the time, i think it’s important to kind of understand the distinction, do you target, keywords rather than products and let me give you an example of what I mean, if you identify one strong product right through all the filters that jungle Scout allows you to write, maybe it has 20 sales with 30k of monthly sales, up when you search the related keyword you actually find at the first, page of the Amazon search results is full of Dino, thousands of reviews are people that have huge barriers to entry, I’m so can you discuss your thought process for once you, do identify a single product to see if it’s worth pursuing, yeah there’s a really good question I think, something that is, i think because I like him kind of get hung up on it right, i Target a particular like, product, and the reason for this, is, how are you going to know what all the keywords are that, so right here I have a camera lens right, if I find that camera lenses are good opportuned, how do I know whether p, people are searching, for what is this like the Sony camera lens or are they searching, or are they searching for like thirst dozens or if not hundreds of different, upon this particular camera, i do, try to find a particular, type of product, guess what like buy one or two, main keywords would be so, Today’s I probably guess, there are so many, camera lenses I’d probably guess when my make you were to this is like 50, millimeter camera lens, or if I had this glass, you know like clear pint glass, glass or something like that would you like my name, that’s where I’ve been gone, try to understand what, demand competition is like, i would encourage you not get to, what if my class isn’t the main, what are the truly this or that or the other thing there’s not very much to me and John, 12 pint glasses or something like that, starting to get hung up on that part just pink like the, what are two, what you think, the Matrix, and choose theirs and kind of gauged, humana competition off that, wreck that I mean that’s absolutely that’s great advice right so and there’s ways to kind of verify, Get on those gases like there’s their services out there like Merchant words right, and those are estimated keyword volume as all my students know right the only true source of a keyword volume is from, search engine you can further verify through Google Keyword Planner, right you want to make sure that you notice the discrepancies, between Merchant words in Google Keyword Planner as Amazon is a biocentric product search platform right and Google, is not necessarily geared 100%, right, so the next question, many of my students kind of ask me all the time about product research in the UK and sometimes other markets, so can you talk about how that is different from the USA product research and any tips or tricks you use specifically, play with jungle Scout I’m kind of to be able to do that International research, as it is I’m sure you know different in certain ways, Yeah absolutely so just a story people always asks is too slow to say is jungle Scout works for Aldean.

Churchill Car Insurance Problem?

Had accident which was my fault in Nov 08, hit a van in rear that stopped suddenly going through a roundabout (less than 5mph) and his trailer hitch ball went into my radiator and damaged the hood, grill and radiator. Car was 1996 Honda in very reasonable condition, MOT'd and all in good service despite its 125,000 mileage, new tyres, exhaust, battery, and clean throughout. Had fully comprehensive insurance with 50 deductable, loaner car and legal support so paid to be protected. When car was collected from accident, collecting garage said at that time that due to the mileage my car would not be repaired. However it took 5 to 6 weeks for the insurance examiner to determine that my car was beyond repair, so I did without a car all that time. Despite repeated phone calls to them, they never called me back as their examiner was on holiday. Then when we finally agree that a price of 500 for my car in January 08 and that took some haggling, the cheque never and so I started chasing them down in early February. I am then informed that I did not disclose a speeding violation on my application and they would have to listen to the tapes of my applying to verify this. Again this took several weeks, and I again had to pursue them for an answer to which they then said I had applied on the internet so no record of a phone conversation. The internet application was misleading, asking for what I believed was 3 years worth of offenses. I've only ever had 2 speeding offenses in my entire life - both speed cameras, just over the limit. The first was at 6 a.m. and I passed a bus pulling over to stop and as I passed it got flashed. The second on the day I found my dad had days to live and I was rushing to catch a flight, and as in both instances was doing 42 mph in a 30 mph zone for a very short period. Nonetheless, I was speeding and paid my fines. I wrote to the insurance company and apologised for not telling them of the other speeding ticket from 4 years and 9 months earlier as I forgot about it. But I admitted it, and apologised in writing. Then then came back to me saying that there would be additional premium to pay before I would get paid for my car. Well, its October 08, and I finally got a letter from the insurers saying they are not paying me as I failed to pay the additional premium requested and they were not going to renew my policy. I have never been asked even after repeated letters to them how much the additional premium was, and what I should do. No replies. I have asked for my car back which they agreed to pay for, and now they state there is nothing they can do, and it is their final decision. I went to the financial ombudsman and unbelieveably DID NOT get a reply from them. I've even spoken to one of their survey staff who tells me that they are incredibly busy and it was probably put aside and not dealt with. I'm at a total loss as to where I stand and how to pursue this without spending more than the accident and car was worth. I've written to their data protection officer and obtained copies of all documentation pertaining to this, so by their records can verify all this information quite clearly. Finally, I maintained my cool with them at all times. Never once did I raise my voice or become unprofessional with them. My questions are: 1. Can I legally request my car back as it has never been paid for? 2. Were they taking money for policy on a car they knew that through mileage alone, they would never pay for loaner car, or to have repaired? 3. This has meant over 30 letters and more phone calls than that to deal with, and rarely do they call you back or reply at all. Can I claim for this time and distress? 4. Am I totally wasting my time? What Does That “New” Car Smell Even Smell Like?

What’s up, budgeters! Got two things to talk about today:

How I’ve never bought a new car or house or almost anything big* brand new before, and why.

A special offer USAA has for its members who go through their car buying service**

That second one won’t matter much if you’re not connected to the military and/or not in the market for a car and/or hate USAA (blasphemy!), but the first one I’m pretty sure most of you can relate to :) And for those who can’t, I want to know what we’re missing? And what that new car smell, smells like??

#1. How I’ve never bought a new car or house or almost anything big brand new before, and why.

Up until recently it never occurred to me that I’ve never owned a new car or house or anything substantial* for that matter, but a recent chat with a USAA colleague changed that. We hopped on the phone so I could learn more about their car buying service they’ve just re-launched (for anyone new here, I’m a hardcore fanboy of USAA and literally have 14 accounts with them!), and somewhere along the conversation I was asked what I thought about used vs new cars.

“Used all the way, baby!” I said out loud. “That’s how I roll!” (Okay, I didn’t really say that ‘cuz I’m not that clever on the spot, but I did say I prefer used all the way ;)) And it was at that exact moment that I realized I’ve never owned a new car EVER in my life before, nor do I even know what that feels like?

I then mentally went down the list of all the cars I’ve owned in the past 20 years since having my license to make sure I was correct

1988 Chevy Corsica – Used! (8 years old when I got it, hand me down from my parents)

1993 Geo Tracker – Used! (4 years old when I got it, the first car I ever bought!)

1988 Honda Prelude – Used! (11 years old when I got it – I “needed” a faster one ;))

2001 Ford Mustang – Used! (3 years old when I got it, and when neon yellow was in fashion (it *was* in fashion, wasn’t it??)

1993 Cadillac DeVille – Used! (13 years old when I got it – no more car payments, woo!)

2005 Toyota Highlander – Used! (2 years old when I got it, car payments again – womp womp)

1993 Cadillac DeVille aka FrankenCaddy – Very used! (15 years old when I got it, looked like 115 years when I donated it)

2008 Lexus RX350 – Used! (8 years old when I got it, lots of surprising effects so far!)

It was a fascinating exercise to go down – I highly recommend it :) I then wondered how much I’ve saved over the past 20 years going this way too? Or if all those total costs would add up to *one* decent brand new car? (Answer: not one, unless it was super luxurious, but probably 2 or 3 average cars. So basically for the price of 2 or 3 new cars I got 8!).

I then started rattling off all the reasons why I’ve only bought used over the years to myself, full well knowing I’d be blogging about it soon ;)

They’re much cheaper, obviously

You’re able to afford MORE of a used car, if you wanted to upgrade or something special

You don’t have to worry about dings and dents and smashes as much (you’ll always worry, but odds are your 5, 10, 20 year old car already has them, so what’s another one (or ten?))

You don’t lose as much when you go to resell them (the used car market is thriving! And you don’t get that wallop of depreciation the second you drive it off the lot either)

All cool bloggers rock used! (And really, isn’t that all that matters? ;))

Of course, there’s a trade off to this too (more miles, more problems? No/less warranty? No knowledge of previous ownership?), but financially speaking used is almost always better than new. Not that there’s anything wrong with going that route if you value it (it’s your money!).

I feel like I’m missing something here, but you get the point. Used is sexy.

As mentioned above, this all started when USAA reached out to tell me they’re offering a special deal for people who find their next car through their car buying service. Specifically, financing rates as low as 1.9% until July 9th. Here’s the portal if you’re interested:

It’s basically a place on their site where you can sort through an aggregated list of cars for sale, compare prices/costs connected to TRUECar data, check out CarFax reports, and even estimate insurance through USAA (pretty handy if you have all your accounts with them too!).

If you end up finding your car through them, you get the special rate, and if you don’t – but still finance through USAA, you get their normal rate. Which fortunately is still pretty good (my Lexus loan is at 2.75%).

In fact, going back through my list of cars over time, I’ve ALWAYS ended up w/ a loan through USAA. Whether starting out with them (like when I slapped my 1st Cadillac on my credit card – hah!), or when I finance first through dealerships for whatever reason, and then end up refinancing later.

Sadly I’ve never been smooth enough to pick up a car in all cash :(

So yeah, this rate doesn’t apply to everyone, but hopefully it helps those members looking to get a new ride sometime soon. If you’re not sure if you’re eligible to join USAA, you can check here. (They’re great for a ton of other stuff too, particularly car insurance. And always on the cutting edge of technology! Fun fact: USAA was the very first company ever to offer check deposit by smart phone.)

One note of caution: USAA’s car buying portal only connects to *dealerships*, so it won’t help you much if you prefer going through private parties. I’m 50/50 myself with dealerships vs private, and of course there are tons of pros and cons on either side. Something to consider though as you’re poking around.

It doesn’t work out all the time or for all situations (food, toilet paper, underwear – eww, eww, ewwwwwww!), but more often than not your wallet will be happier going used in the end.

Though if the diamond is millions of years old, does it still count? ;) (Side note: if I went back in time I totally would have picked one up for $780 instead of $7,800, not only to save massive money (imagine what that $7k difference would have been worth now, 10 years later?), but also because my wife rarely wears hers anymore… Turns out that dang rock gets snagged on all kinds of things like her clothes and my kids’ skin! She was always scratching them as babies, so now it only comes out on special occasions, womp womp.)
