Grishaverse is fiction. Telling tragic backstory should have a purpose.

That purpose shouldn't be only to fill in blank pages of the character's biography. If you don't tie it to development, don't show how it shaped the person, you're simply fishing for pity points I won't give.

That's the difference between Zoya's backstory and Demon in the Wood for example.

Aleksander went through a horrible experience, after which he decides to do whatever he can to prevent it ever happening again to anyone. He's deemed the villain of this world.
