It finally makes sense when Graduation hits them.

Or rather, the truth of it becomes unavoidable when he is finishing up his packing for college.

Jazz had come down from Harvard to help Danny pack his things for the University of Chicago.

Things were going well, Sam was going to take a gap year to volunteer at this non-profit in the Amazons, so she had come to help for the bulk of it.

Tucker was heading to sunny California for UC Berkeley, so Sam went over to help him out before they all convened for a final dinner.

Danny wasn't leaving for another couple days, but Tucker was taking Sam with him on the long drive, and whilst Danny could join them—well. Jazz was here, and he had barely seen her with how busy she was in college. Even with all the holidays and extra visits she tried to make, it was an adjustment period for all of them to not be in each other's pockets like before.

No doubt, it'll be hard to be apart from his friends and family. But there was always video calls, and what were ghost powers for if not to drop by every now and then on a whim? It's not like Sam and Tucker wouldn't be abusing their portal guns.

They'll adjust, and grow, just like before. If they survived Jazz's departure for college, they'll survive it again—they know better now.

It was hard, when she had just left, and emotionally taxing—especially when Danny had finally hit the breaking point and talked to his parents about his Death halfway through the second semester.

Jazz had come down that week and skipped school, it got so bad. But they made it through, and now…well.

With his parents in the know more than ever, and his impending Kingship upon death, ghost attacks just weren't an issue anymore. Danny had tried his best to pick himself up, and with his friends and family's support, along with Lancer's extra credit lessons, things had finally reached equilibrium.

Even his powers had settled down, more a part of him like—like breathing again.

Danny felt more settled in his skin than ever before, ready to tackle on adulthood and whatever may come after.

But of course, it's never that easy with Fenton Luck.

"Danny?" Jazz's voice calls out from above. Danny doesn't move from where he's slouched in his usual spot nudged up into the side of the Portal. "Danny, Mom said dinner's ready."

The jar of pebbles and marbles is in the cradle of his legs, sitting criss cross applesauce, the light catching and refracting as he spins it around and around.

"What's wrong?" Danny jolts, head whipping up like a kid with their hand caught in the cookie jar. Jazz is standing at the bottom of the stairs, hands on her hips with a perplexed expression on her face.

"Nothin' Jazz." Danny bites his lip, hunches his shoulders to fidget with a gaudy Netherlands magnet on the Portal side panel. "I was just…thinkin' is all. I'll be up in a minute."

As expected. Jazz doesn't believe him. Danny tries not to squirm when she walks towards him and sits herself down.

"Danny, come on." Jazz whispers, placing a hand on his knee. "What's really going on? You came down here to grab your jar an hour ago."

"I think I'm gonna leave the collection here after all." Danny makes his voice overly bright, feeling like he's 14 years old and not wanting to open Pandora's box. "Maybe, uh, take a magnet or two instead."

He places the jar in it's usual place, dislodging Jazz's hand carefully as he turns to pick out a magnet. He reaches out to grab one, falters, before bringing his hand back as if burned. He stands up instead, offering the hand to Jazz for assistance. "On second thought, I'll pick one later. Dinner's waiting!"

Jazz eyes him, gaze flicking between him and the jar and the stickers and magnets.

"Is it that you want to leave it here," she places a hand on the jar, Danny twitching with the movement, "or is it that you have to leave it here?"

Danny looks away, muttering softly, "Does it matter?"

His hand droops with the words, but before it can fully drop, Jazz's hand snatches at it. She squeezes until his eyes dart to her steely teal gaze, voice fierce and begging.

"Of course it matters, Danny. You matter. Your feelings, and—and your treasures too, all of it matters." She bites her lip, looks away. "If something happened to Bearbert, wouldn't you care?"

"Of course I'd care, He's—" Danny hurriedly kneels down. "You've had him since you were born!"

"And I've had you since you were born too." Jazz laughs, pulling Danny back down into his niche, neatly avoiding the jar. "Look. We both know this jar is important to you. Heck, ever since you started this collection it's like—"

Jazz bites her lip, not wanting to say it. They've both been avoiding saying it. Danny occupies himself by putting the jar back into the cradle of his legs, buying himself time.

The silence lingers, tension building in the ring of it, like a ghost hovering over them.

But, well. If Danny's got any experience, it's dealing with ghosts.

"Like I'm alive again?" Danny sighs, slumping back against the wall and thumping his head as he looks towards the ceiling. "I knew I wasn't the only one who noticed."

"When Clockwork gave you that coin…" Jazz scooches in next to him to put an arm around him. "It was hard not to."

"Funeral rites." Danny huffs a laugh, leaning his forehead onto her shoulder, neck craning as he takes in the comforting smell of his older sister. "You think Sam and Tuck knew?"

"They've been giving you those pebbles and marbles, haven't they?" Jazz runs her fingers through his hair, and he closes his eyes to concentrate on not floating away.

"You think Dani knows?" Danny flaps his hand towards the magnets. "You think Dani needs one?"

Jazz hums, thinking for a moment. "That's something you'll have to ask her, I think."

"And Mom and Dad?" Danny whispers, somehow afraid.

"They've had their suspicions." Jazz says, after a moment. "They've contributed some stickers, after all."

"I know." Danny mutters. "I can…feel it when they do. Explains the daisy stickers, at least."

"Better than real, wilting flowers I suppose." Jazz hums.

They sit like that for a long moment, finding comfort the way they always have since they were young.

"So." Jazz finally breaks the silence, resting her hand at the back of his neck. "You can't bring the jar."

"No, Jazz." Danny laughs, helplessly, and decides that enough is enough. "I can't bring my grave with me."

"Well, so what?" Jazz nudges Danny's face up, face stern as ever. "It's not like you'll never come back! And Mom and Dad can take care of it while you're gone."

"I guess you're right." Danny smiles, sitting back up and fiddling with contents of the jar. The feel of pebbles and marbles sifting through his fingers is comforting, and bolsters him. "Nobody walks around with their graves anyway."

"Dead men tell no tales." Jazz haughtily agrees. "Nor can they walk."

"Whoever said that," Danny grins, anxious and nervous and relieved, "Clearly have never spoken to ghosts."

"Hmm…True." Jazz makes a thoughtful face, before smirking slyly at him. "All the ghosts I know can never shut their big mouths up!"

"Hey now!" Danny argues, grabbing for Jazz to give her a noogie. But Jazz is too quick, ducking his hand and rolling up into a crouch.

"What?" Jazz laughs, loud and happy, "It's true!"

Danny gently places the jar down back in its place before he jerks himself up. "If anyone's a loud mouth it's you!"

They chase each other around like that in the lab, ducking and weaving before Mom calls for them asking why they're taking so long. They meet each other's eyes, before dissolving into laughter once more, jostling each other as they make their way towards the door.

Just before they head up, Danny looks back.

The Portal is off, and the jar—no, his grave glistens in the light of the machinery glowing around them. A bit of gold glints at the top of the pile inside, Clockwork's coin somehow always managing to dig itself out. Danny has long since given up on understanding the logistics of it. The pebbles and marbles reflect light the way they always do, in a rainbow of colors flecking against the metal interior of the lab.

The stickers and magnets, once barely visibly from this angle, have started to spill out to the front of the Portal, and onto the other sides. Lithuania, Glasgow, New York, China—cheery fonts on gaudy little magnets seem to smile in an abstract way. Stickers, gold stars and sale prices and flowers upon flowers, wink at him through the iridescent top sheen.

Overall, his grave looks nice. Colorful, scattered, clearly well loved by the people he loves. It'll be hard to leave, but it's easy to find comfort in the fact that it'll be here, waiting for him.

"Danny?" Jazz calls from the top of the staircase. "Come on!"

"Coming!" Danny calls back, one last glance and one big smile on his face, as he heads up to dinner with his family.

Building Graves like Homes

It starts with a sticker.

That's all it is, really. A stupid little sticker.

Jazz gives it to him as a joke. He did the dishes unprompted, so she gave him a gold star sticker—one of the ones she gives to the kids she tutors on Sundays and Thursdays.

It's just that the basement is comforting.

By all accounts it shouldn't be—it's cold, noisy, barren of any furniture beyond work tables and creepy weapons and mess.

By all accounts he should hate it here—his parents spend most of their time here so it's hard to find peace, his sister hates it, Sam and Tucker hate it, and Danny…well. Danny died here.

But the sticker.

There's a spot next to the portal, not quite under the jut of it, between where the side ends and where the filter sits on the wall. The hum of the portal and lab resonates just perfectly to be almost a lullaby, the edge of the portal's jutted out side providing a good little nestle spot for Danny to sit and lean against.

Danny likes to sit there, in the rare moments when his parents aren't in the lab, and just kind of…ruminate.

Today he ruminates on the sticker, the little glittery shine of it, and how funny it looks against the cold metal gray.

He sticks it on the side, where you can't really see it, and something sort of settles in him.

He stares and stares at it, feeling a little pinprick of warmth as he rubs against it with a finger, until his parents come home and he has to leave.

The warmth, however, decides to stay long after.

Han Yoojin's Black Choker

This post isn't going to be everything, but it's going to hopefully be easier to find/navigate than the handful of posts I'm seeing floating around and that I've responded to: a summary of official art with Han Yoojin wearing the black choker in S-Classes that I Raised, its maybe appearances in the text of the novel, and its maybe relationship with fanart. For the short answer, yes it appears in multiple pieces of official novel art, and maybe at least once in the novel text. But it might also be a fan design that's sort of accepted as official at least in some cases? Explanation beneath the read more.

Yoojin's black choker is most likely Grace, the protection item Myungwoo made from Shalos. Other folks have said it's the translation item he gets from Yoohyun, and I disagree, but I'll get to that.

The novel covers and text

Yoojin is not wearing a choker on either novel cover. The first cover, on the left, has a black line for his collar, not a necklace or choker. It appears often in the manhwa. The black collar is gone in onlyraii's cover on the right (even though onlyraii had drawn Yoojin with the collar in fanart years prior to this, detailed later). The first cover seems to be from when the novel started publishing, and the second cover came out in April 2022. More on the second cover later.

The ebook release also got a cover, but it doesn't have Yoojin on it.

Text-wise the "choker" is possibly from novel chapter 109, where Grace turns into a sparkling choker at one point (which Yoojin notes is more over the top than a bracelet during his struggle to get her to turn into something less ostentatious). Some folks looked at different text in the novel here for how it and particularly Grace look, but just as a warning, there is no official English translation for the novel outside what we get in the manhwa, which is somewhat modified because it's a manhwa adaptation. There are fan translations for parts of the novel, but a lot of folks use machine translation, which can be very dubious.

In other places in the novel she's just described as turning into a necklace, not specifically a choker, though in novel chapter 176, it's described as sitting close around Yoojin's neck (which sounds like a choker). Whatever jewelry she turns into is specifically described as having a blue/silver jewel from which her bird form emerges (as she has in novel chapter 156, which is the chapter one fanwiki lists it appearing in, and in which she is described as turning into a necklace, not specifically a choker). So there's very little textual support for him to be wearing a choker, though he does at least on occasion wear necklaces.

Revised ebook novel volumes

SCTIR the novel was (and still is) originally released chapter by chapter on Naver, Munpia, and Ridibooks (currently Side Story is only available on Naver, but the chapters of the main story are on all three). The main story was eventually collected into 35 volumes and partially revised or at least given additional scenes in places. Each volume contained at least two pieces of art. For volumes 1-14 this was seemingly a character portrait with their bio (e.g., age, height, likes, dislikes), and 1 piece of interior art, with the latter at least being by 비완 (the manhwa artist). Volumes 15+ switched up interior artists, for a total of I think at least 3-4 artists, and those volumes had at least 2 pieces of interior art, with volume 35 having 4. The individual chapters didn't have this, it was added for the ebook release.

The volumes themselves are available on Ridibooks and Naver (they might be somewhere on Munpia, but I couldn't find them).

The first volume of the ebook released in May 2020 (the Ridibooks release lists an earlier date for some reason than the one on Naver, which is November 2020). By this point, fans had already been drawing Yoojin wearing a black choker with a gem (usually blue or silver) on it since at least 2019: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. <This fanart is by onlyraii, the artist who went on to make the new cover for the novel published in April 2022. So at least some of the official artists were involved in the community and knew of popular fan designs (though notably, Yoojin is not wearing the choker on onlyraii's official book cover).

Just want to emphasize: there's a difference between an author drawing/commissioning art and ensuring that it complies with their specifications in the text/their vision and their publisher commissioning art that might not even get approval/comment from the author. I don't know how much geunseo had a say in any of the art for the novel. If there's some interview or something somewhere where they state clearly how many/which pieces of art they approve and the level of control they have over what the art looks like, I haven't seen it. It's not unusual for third party artists to have more freedom to do stuff and draw fan designs/things that aren't accurate in "official" art and for it to get approved (e.g., some of the interior art for the official English translation of "Mo Dao Zu Shi", which actually goes directly against what's on the page; it's kind of unclear how much control MXTX had over this stuff, and heavily implied she had little to none; it's possible that's the same case with geunseo). So whether or not you view this stuff as official is up to you. But it is in the official ebooks, though designs are inconsistent, which implies there was a lack of strong direction in what artists were/weren't allowed to do.

비완 potentially drew Yoojin wearing the choker in volume 13, for the Chuseok art (September 2020, I'm going by the Ridibooks release dates). It's very hard to tell whether that's his shirt collar or a choker. But judging by the color of what's beneath it before robe starts and the skin above the choker, it looks like it's again the collar of a white t-shirt, not a choker.

The next time it was potentially drawn was by a different artist in volume 18 (July 2021). It's hard to tell because he's holding a bouquet that mostly covers his neck, but on the right side of his neck seems to be part of a black choker.

You can kind of see something that looks like a black choker near Peace's front left paw.

The clearest earliest example of him wearing it in official art is in volume 19 (April 2022), where he's clearly visible wearing a black choker with a blue gem on it. I don't see it mentioned as something he's wearing in the text of that chapter, at least from a brief browse. Also again, this is long after fans had been drawing him wearing it, and it became a popular fan design.

He's also definitely wearing it in two pieces (one each) of art for volumes 20-21 (April 2022). Here's the one from volume 21:

In volumes 22 (April 2022) and 25 (August 2022), Yoojin seems to be wearing a cat collar with a similar design in two other pieces of art (one each volume). Not exactly a choker, but he's at least wearing something on his neck. Here's the one from volume 22:

The other art of him with the cat collar in volume 25 is a lot more similar to the other interior art choker designs, with a black ribbon or whatever it is and a blue gem in the center, rather than a blue ribbon.

After that, they switch artists at least once if not twice and none of them drew Yoojin with the choker - or any necklace at all - that I can see. He didn't lose Grace for good in the novel, though he doesn't wear her all the time, but no other artist for the interiors drew him wearing the choker for the last 10 volumes of the revised ebook novel release, if not the last 14. Whether that's a narrative choice or the inclusion of the choker at all is random/whatever the current artist wants/what was geunseo/the publisher's mood, who knows?

The manhwa adaptation

This is how manhwa episode 103 depicts Yoojin trying to get Grace to turn into something wearable after first receiving her (art by 비완), when the alleged "choker" description appears in the novel text:

I'm not seeing a black choker anywhere. The black line near his neck is the collar of his shirt.

As of posting on November 6th, 2024, there is no art in the manhwa of Yoojin wearing the choker, either as Grace or the translation item he got from Yoohyun. The manhwa depicts the translation item differently, and Grace has only appeared as fancy necklaces or a bracelet. If 비완 drew the choker on Yoojin in the Chuseok ebook novel art for 2020, although the manhwa hasn't gotten there yet, they have drawn him wearing the choker before in official artwork, and yet have not drawn him wearing it since in the manhwa, for whatever reason. We'll have to see how the scene is drawn when the manhwa gets to Chuseok.

In the manhwa, Grace is shown turning into a simple bracelet after negotiation in episode 103:

You'll note he often wears shirts with black collars on them.

Grace is drawn, consistently, in multiple episodes, as this bracelet. Not as a necklace. And not as a choker.

This is the translation item that Yoohyun gives Yoojin as it appears in manhwa episode 55:

Which is roughly how it's described in novel chapter 68, absent any specific color description for the metal ornament. Someone else said this is actually what people are drawing when they draw the choker because the design is vague enough to match a choker, which is strange to me, because from what I recall of the novel, Yoojin has this in his pocket/inventory most of the time. He's not wearing it constantly (he also already had it when he got Grace). It's kind of implied if not stated he doesn't like wearing it much and only puts it on out of necessity and takes it off at the first opportunity. He does, however, typically wear Grace (though he does, for various reasons, take her off a decent amount).

The April Fool's 2022 art by ? and the 2022 official novel cover by onlyraii

Someone else pointed out the "sketch" for the official novel art by onlyraii (final art below):

And here it is when it was released seemingly originally on 31 March 2022/1 April 2022 (KST).

In the other post I'm seeing about the "sketch" for this, the unfinished "sketch" listed was actually the April Fool's Day joke for 2022 that seems to parody onlyraii's cover, but with all the guys being bald:

(A lot of manhwa and I think Korean webnovels do April Fool's Day joke posts with fake "new" art done by official artists; 2022's SCTIR manhwa April's Fool's Day joke was magical girl themed, and this was 2024's, which had most of the cast become dinosaurs).

You can also see that while there are similarities, this is very much not what they ended up with, and again, it's dubious this was an actual sketch for the cover: it's not on onlyraii's twitter, though that doesn't mean it wasn't posted elsewhere, and seems more in the style of 비완's art, so it's likely this is the manhwa team doing a jokey post (the manhwa started in November 2021, and 비완 was still doing art for the novel ebook revision at least around 2020, so they'd have been around, and serikachan, the lead storyboard artist, does post about recent novel chapters on twitter, so at least some of them pay attention to the novel). I think it's intentional that all the men are bald as well, to note it's a joke; a lot of the Korean commenters are commenting on their baldness.

A core issue is the similarity and that they were released 11 hours apart (the gag went up around 11 hours before the official cover was released; onlyraii commented on their work for the cover around 40 minutes after the official cover was released). The "sketch" seems to show maybe a planned choker, but if it was an actual sketch in whole or part, it was clearly nixed for the final design. Who made that decision is anyone's guess.

"Sketch" or not, again, onlyraii has drawn Yoojin with a choker many times in their fanart dating back to 2019: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Before the 2022 piece. If onlyraii and/or 비완 wanted to incorporate a fan design into the official art in some way, again, they wouldn't be the first fanartist/community member to do so on official artwork. But at least in this case, that didn't happen in the final design.

In conclusion:

At this point I don't fully know if the design/his regularly wearing a choker comes from the novel or fanon that was later incorporated by fans into canon when they worked on the official art, or if geunseo suggested it or at least okay'd its inclusion on official art, but these things at least are true:

Grace is apparently mentioned as being a choker at least once in the novel text, but it's described as being rather fancy

the fan design/idea of the black choker with a small gem in the middle predates at least the official release of the ebook art with him wearing a choker (if they were released earlier than that on an artist social media post or portfolio or publisher post somewhere, in some form, encouraging fans to use it in fanart prior to the book releases, I have no idea), so at least the stuff pre-2020 was not inspired by the ebook interior art, and potentially nothing before 2022 was inspired by interior art because the clearest art with him wearing it wasn't out until then; it was likely inspired by the potential single/two times Grace is described as a choker in the text, or just generally popular fanon about him wearing a choker (wouldn't be surprising, there's a lot of emphasis on Hyunje grabbing Yoojin's neck all the time and how Yoojin's neck feels when he's not grabbing it)

Yoojin wears a black choker/collar with a gem in the middle of it in at least 3 if not 6 pieces of official ebook interior art, and a blue ribbon collar in at least one piece of official ebook art

after the choker/collar shows up on those 3-7 pieces of interior art, it stopped appearing at all (his neck is visibly bare of any necklace of any kind in multiple art pieces), and he doesn't wear anything on his neck in the artwork for at least 10 volumes; furthermore, despite the manhwa artist potentially drawing him wearing the choker in one of those pieces, they have not drawn him wearing it in the manhwa in the years since that ebook art was released, even after he had both Grace and the translation necklace item, both of which have been suggestions for what the choker is

So does he wear a choker? In the novel text and novel art, maybe, at least sometimes, but not currently in the manhwa. Does it look like it does in fanart? Maybe: it's not really described in the text and the few novel art pieces we have don't quite match each other. The publisher and/or possibly geunseo okay'd at least some official art with it on (though I don't know how much control geunseo has in that decision, and the author of the original work okaying art is different than the publisher okaying art, particularly depending on what degree of control geunseo had over any changes/what could be drawn, or if they were just allowed to say yes or no and that's it).

- PARALLEL PLAY PARALLEL PLAY PARALLEL PLAY‼️‼️ IT IS ABSOLUTELY ONE OF HIS LOVE LANGUAGES‼️ Sometimes hangouts will usually involve the indulgence of hobbies within the vicinity of who he’s hanging out with.

- (Established relationship hc) At the start of the relationship or when you instigate physical affection with him, he tends to tense up and at times even shift and give a little bit of space between you two. Upon talking the whole ordeal out, he’ll try to be more open to receiving physical affection such as letting you put your head on his shoulder.

- (Established relationship hc) Observant of your feelings and behaviour. Later on in the relationship, it gets to a point where he can pick up patterns in your conversations with him.

(E.g my partner picked up on a pattern with me anytime I yapped to him about Aiden Pearce. In his words: “Aiden is so Interesting to analyse :3!!!”, “Am I overanalysing a mediocre game character from a mediocre franchise.”, “I LOVE AIDEN PEARCE 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥”).

Sometimes the observant behaviour isn’t all that positive, as with this he jumps to conclusions in situations that you are under distress.

- Penguin pebbling. At random occasions he can gift a trinket to those he’s fond of, whether it be a random feather or stone, a scrap circuit board that he turned into a keychain, a piece of leftover scrap metal from building with a texture that he’s fond of, etc.

- Goes quiet when someone vents to him but contributes a word or two every so often as he feels bad not giving an answer

- Emotionally unpredictable. His resting face and tone makes it hard to tell how he feels, and at times can go quiet minutes after being talkative, which can leave you with a mixed bag of whether or not he’s pissed, neutral, happy or just wanting to be quiet.

- On a rare occasion or two will show physical affection to you or to those he’s close to without going tense. It can involve hand holding, hugging, playing with one’s face (tugging at your cheek, squeezing them or just simple caresses), resting his head on one’s shoulder & playing with their hair. But it’s only when he’s the one giving it.

- Had a habit of hoarding things like plushies or figures when he was a kid, and usually kept them in a space where it was an unorganised chaos that only he was able to transcribe. He was able to learn to let go of the hoarding habit, but still does it on an occasion or two.

- Give him a new pair of shoes that he’s comfortable with and months later they will look messy and well worn (e.g. white trainers? Nah those things are coming back slightly dirty and a bit yellowed)

- When any figures or display collectibles arrive, he has a specific ritual that he remembers off by heart and has been doing it since childhood, in which he’d rearrange his space, clean his hands and put on a set of gloves to delicately place and display the figure as to not damage it or ruin it

- An absolute sucker for chewing things when he’s bored. When he was a kid he chewed on packaging peanuts because the texture stimulated him. He eventually learned to drop the habit for more better alternatives like sweets or chewelry.

- At one point was really bad at keeping his room clean due to his hoarding habit that when he saw his friend’s room that was tidy and organised looking, he got envious and proceeded to clean his room; ranting from his shelves, floor, bed, tables and desk.

- Secretly likes to cook but is scared of what the other dedsec members might think of it as he isn’t the type of person to add seasoning.

- (Continuing from previous) Likes to ease out of his comfort zone with flavour slowly by researching, then proceeding to season the food he makes with the stuff he currently has at home.

- Had a special interest in glitch wars that lasted for 2 years. (Glitch wars as in the videogame in the in-game universe)

- (Established relationship hc) Sometimes will randomly approach you and declare that he wishes to squeeze your skull affectionately.

Only thing is he will only eat that specific food item if you make it, because he only likes it that way. Any other form it is made he will immediately decline it, even if it’s from a restaurant.

As someone who just consumed all 6 seasons of 911 in like a week and two days, I don't really have any meta things to say since I haven't sat down to think it through, but I gotta say, I think season 5 and season 6 felt very...mid. There were some great scenes and good arcs, but it felt less impressive than the other ones.

the pure unadulterated joy of stumbling upon the bad guys books in the library entirley on accident (have never read the books, only seen thefilm) , sitting down to read the 1st book, and being caught of guard by getting to see this scene in real life, in person in the flesh. not as a tumblr post. the real deal! wonderful. i love gay people !!

I like stories about Peter as a civilian and him coming of age but I can’t stand the way his personal relationships are portrayed especially the romantic ones and certainly his relationship with Mary Jane. 

Even before the current run and all its character assignations, MJ has always confused me when it came to her loving Peter as Peter and as Spider-Man. It was implied and then explicitly stated for a brief while that she knew he was Spider-Man even before they started dating. She understood the responsibilities he had and seemed to sympathize with how much he had to sacrifice personally to be Spider-Man.

And then when they start dating she constantly gets fed up with his heroics. Not just worrying about him, I’m not getting on her for that, but like not having time for his personal life or his guilt complex, which she knows he struggles with. I would deem this justified if she didn’t know his idenity as Spider-Man but she did. She practically always has and it was a key part of their relationship and why things worked at first. It creates this idea that she wants him to change for her or even tone down his heroics which is again is something that causes him mental anguish and he struggles working through.

Peter isn’t innocent. He has a horrible work-life balance that hurts even those who know but Mary Jane is pitched as his match made in heave, his soul-mate. The on-again off-again nature of their relationship, often triggered by MJ, makes her seem like she had this romanticized version of being the superhero’s girl, like Lois Lane and Superman, only to realize this is real life (for them) and not that. 

She’s loyal but not much of a partner; A lover, a companion but she fails to provide that true support in understanding. Her patience frequently comes with ultimatums and I can’t fathom why the writers or editorial writes her like this for drama when it would much more enthralling to have her disdain and resentment come from her husband's almost dying everyday rather than not having time for her.
