I asked the popular tart shop in my country to make Smosh tarts and this is what I got.

WHOA!! That looks cute. (Sorry for my suck ass photo shooting skills.) I didn't expect that to be their faces at all! I expected it to be like an ordinary pattern. Wow, It surprised me a lot. But my prediction about having a Smosh logo on it was right. Color looks pretty bland (I expected this to be more colorful) but I’m gonna judge this by the taste. Also, I can feel that these monochrome colors represent them being opposites through the color of black and white. Like day and night. yin and yang. That’s actually them. So that’s all ok for me

This is the card that matched the theme I ordered. And have flavor descriptions written on the back. That was long. I'm not sure if these are descriptions about dessert or essays about our boys. lol. Don’t worry. I’ll translate all of these.

So, what are these?

This is made-to-order tarts that I ordered from a famous shop in my country. This shop usually makes tarts based on movies, series, etc,. And somehow it became popular among fangirls in lots of fandom. I saw them order tarts in their favorite anime, characters or talents, even their ships. People were so impressed about how this shop selected all the ingredients that can relate and tell the story about the requested theme. Even though it's pretty costly (around 30 usd, because it's made-to-order and they need lots of research), It's still popular and recommended by many customers.

I ordered one set about my favorite anime around last year and I was so impressed. (I wanna talk about this sometime too) So, This year is a nice year that I came back to this fandom and knew about how amazing and heartwarming that friendship is. I decided to order these and I'm gonna share with you guys about how it came out.

Note before start: 1. I understand that analyzing real people is WAY more difficult than fictional characters. Surely they, Even I can't pick up all of the story and every dimension of them into one piece of tart.

2. I only gave them a bunch of reference videos and interviews because I want to give them freedom to analyze by their own way, on their pov, not just sticking on our idea. So pov from people outside fandom might be different from ours. But I'll include some of my analysis and additions in the descriptions too. (Although my additions are… pretty long because it was so much fun to write lmao)

3. I’m not good at writing food reviews. But I’ll do my best to describe the taste.

Let’s start.

First two are about our boys. I read the description and found out that they were focused on their childhood background, personal story and their personalities. They have the same base of tart crust. One is black and one is white. Look at the chocolate cream shapes. This might be their hairstyle back to the peak period. (Emo hair and bowl hair cut)

Anthony Flavor: cacao cream and passion fruit curd / rock chocolate with milk mousse 

Mousse with rock - Represent his childhood period that should be fun like ordinary children but wasn’t. He was being the shy and silent boy who came from a broken home with not much money. And even had one time suffered with a long period illness that made him absent from school for a while. Like the mousse that should be smooth but have a hard rock chocolate mixed with it.

Passion Fruit - Fruit that provides freshness and energy. Also enhances all the flavors. Literally, Represent his passion. After he met his life-changing transfer student in grade 6, The radiance and many things that he received from that person made his life brighter than before. That also inspired him and made him move forward to try something new and make him shine. Included learning to make his own website (I think this paragraph talks about the aftermath of getting a get well soon card) and continued to develop it into the work that he wants to do. Overflowing energy inside his mind made him stand up and won’t let all troubles in the past limit himself.

Cacao - Have a little bitter taste but make us feel energetic. Represents all of the struggle to get what he desires, no matter how difficult it is. Even though he had to face lots of problems that heavily affected him, and hard times that made him despair. He still keeps moving forward and wants to make his wish come true although the way until he reaches the goal is tough and not easy to get over it. One of his wishes was to take the friendship that he lost back. That was not easy at all because he was trapped by fear and feeling of guilt. But when he got a chance, He took it without any hesitation.

Taste: First taste when I took a bite was the passion fruit’s sour taste that mixed with milk cream inside. It was pretty hard to cut it with a fork because of the rock chocolates. But it brings a good crunchy texture when I eat. (Talk about crunchy texture. This reminds me of one episode of Lunchtime where he prefers crunchy peanut butter for some reason) And the last bite is when I took all of the taste from cacao, passion and crunchy cream together and I feel so satisfied and fresh. This is the only tart that has fruits included, and the fruity taste was outstanding. Like the shop said that his passion makes him shine. And I think maybe, just maybe, they selected passion fruit because it usually has lots of seeds that might represent his tattoo also.

Ian Flavor: peanut butter cream and milk chocolate ganache / pink frosting with milk financier

Financier - Like the previous one, Milk represents the childhood period. But unlike his partner, He was born into a big family that was supportive and warm. So the taste of milk in this piece has a richer and smoother taste.

Frosting - This represents a pink frosted sprinkled donut. Frosting gives us a sweet taste and the color of pink usually means love. This represents the love that he shares and receives with his family. And not only his actual family, His friends and people in crews are his found family that he shares and receives all the love too. He's a beloved person and cares for everyone. (And all of the brightful love is so powerful that it can ignite the passion of someone I talked about above)

Peanut Butter - Ingredients that have a high level of energy source. Represent his effort and consistency that put into the work. And because It is the main ingredient often used in energy-boosting foods for long-distance runners, This represents running that he was doing back then too. And he compared Smosh to cross-country in a watch party and said about keep going and keep running even in the hardest time too. Even though problems and hard times come to him. He chooses not to show his negative thoughts (If I said in a bit negative way, It's "hide everything inside")  but instead, his powerful radiance and energy will make him move forward many times, and can motivate others to move forward with him. Now he has reached the goal of regaining his friendship, But the running path hasn't ended yet.

Milk Chocolate - This is chocolate that has a high percentage of milk. So it shows the childishness that is still within him.

Taste: Compared to the first one, this is all creamy ingredients. When I first saw this I was wondering “Where is the pink frosted sprinkled donut?�� because I only saw his face. And when I cut (Much easier) I saw a pink layer. It even has colorful sprinkles! That’s so cute, like a layer of cake that has berry sauce inside. And it layered on top of financier that were smooth and rich like they said. Taste of milk chocolate with peanut butter. Little crunch from sprinkles. And the cake inside. All of these make this piece of tart sweet and lovely. And I think that hidden pink layer kinda represents his cold look outside (Like someone said) but inside is colorful and creative. (And I kinda think that what if crunchy sprinkle can represent his hidden obstacle too?)

And these two pieces are about Smosh and their journey together from the beginning until now. These two are black and white and have big channel logos. And like the first two pieces, Black and white tart crust for each piece. (Location changed because I ate it the next day. Too many sugars in one day aren’t good for almost 30’s like me)

Flavor: dark chocolate ganache and white chocolate mousse with vanilla custard bacon crisp and coffee cacao nibs cremeux with lavender honey cake

Chocolates - The colors of black and white placing alternately represent them being different but came from the same beginning. Like these two types of chocolate that have different taste and texture, But both are chocolate. They share the same perspectives, interests and sense of humor. Fulfilling each other. And led to them start creating and presenting their ideas to the world. Through the days that passed, sometimes happy, sometimes sad, Make this also represented the time they spent together by the tastes that were both bitter and sweet that mixed together. As well as chocolate helps the brain to make serotonin; a neurotransmitter that makes us feel good and also decreases stress and pain levels. The two of them brought smiles and happiness to the audiences through Smosh that they joined their creative power together and were successful for a long time.

Vanilla and bacon - Weird combination that is not usually used together, But it creates something new and different from the normal flavors and has a unique identity. Becoming a Youtuber was a new thing at that time. No one knows if it will succeed or not, but they still choose this path and go for it with full force. The store described this part like this. But I think this might be interpreted to their unique sense of creativity that maybe looks weird but surprisingly harmonizes together and is addictive too.

Coffee - Have a bitter taste that is usually used to describe “Taste of being adult”. Enjoyment isn't the only thing they have to consider, Business and creativity grow along with it too. When they decided to sell their channel, Their channel wasn’t only about enjoyment anymore and lots of responsibility was necessary. They had to make lots of content and do a lot of things. Without realizing it, Their relationship slowly changed from “best friend” to “business partner that works together”. Distance started to appear between them who used to be very close.

Cacao Nibs - Bitter small pieces that look like piles of dust. Represents all of the outside problems and hidden feelings that piled up between them without enough conversation to dust it off. Even if it was just a small thing, If it was too much, It can become a big wall in their way. Sadly, They reached the point that they couldn’t break the wall, Leading to them driving apart later.

Honey - Known as an ingredient that will not expire. Represent their long-lasting friendship. Even though they had changed a lot, been apart for years and still had so many untold feelings, They finally realized that their bonds are much stronger and deeper than they thought and all of the precious memories they shared have never faded. Something between them still remains and never changed by the time at all. You can see it clearly in lots of videos that their dynamics when they’re together are still the same as when they were young.

Lavender - Means "I'm missing and waiting for you" in flower language (I researched about this. It's more like from Japan). They really missed each other even though they’re successful in their own way. They realized that something was missing when they were separated. When they looked back at the old memories they shared together for many years, They felt the solid and perfect dynamic of each other that never felt the same with anyone else. Also we missed them and waited for them to be in the same video (even though it might be just a short collaboration, we wished for this) for a long time too. We really missed the atmosphere of their sketches and dynamic when they were together. And now they finally get back together and make funny sketches again. The Feelings of “missing you” are strong, And their and our waiting was worth it.

Taste: First, I wasn’t sure which is the first piece of this pair. So I cut the white crust first and voila! Bacon. Lots of meaty bacon inside the custard. I heard that mixing meat with sweets is surprisingly delicious, but I never tried something like this before. I took a bite and, Whoa! How can I describe this correctly? It was like bacon cream pasta but went along well with two types of chocolates. The little sweetness of custard and the scent of bacon harmonized so well. How? That's good, dude! I was so surprised by this piece, and felt like “I wanna try this again”. So, this represents their sense of humor that combines well and is addictive, making us want to watch more of their content.

And here we come. The last piece of this art. I cut the black crust and I saw the layer of brown and white. And when I tasted a cream that stuck on my fork, I was like OHHHHHH!? The scent of lavender was so obvious. So first, I slowly tasted each part of this. Black and white chocolate that mixed well and smooth like the first one of this pair. The layer of coffee cream was bitter. It had no sugar on this. Just bitter, with cacao nibs that have no sugar added too. Bitter like them when they were about to part. Amount of cacao nibs was not that small either. Like I said, On the camera (double chocolate) they still had good dynamics like always. But inside, they had problems and untold words that filled between them so much that they reached the point that they couldn’t pass anymore. But the deepest layer of this piece was sweet and fragrant lavender honey. Something between them still remains since they were young. Old sweet memories about each other are always in their heart. And the scent of lavender, which means “Missing and waiting for you” was outstanding. Represent their strong feelings that want to be with each other again. These two combinations were powerful enough that could cover up the bitterness of coffee. And this can be interpreted as “Because they came through the bitterness, They finally can reach the sweetness that is still there” / “No rain, No rainbow”. They passed the big trial of their relationship and their bonds are now stronger and deeper than before. Even though I finished this piece, the scent of lavender still remained in my mouth. I had internal screaming over this piece. Tart shop owner really got me. That was freaking beautiful. Thank you so much.

After I read the descriptions and ate the final piece, Let me say something.

I always believe. Only nostalgic feelings about their old memories about the contents online won't be enough for them to decide to be together again. But the lots of memories about each other, lots of times that they spent together, and how each other shaped their life for a long time since they were teens are the reason why. Each other's existence is one of the important parts of their life. Like the quote “Without you, I’ll never be like this. I am who I am now because of you”. Feeling of desire to take the aparted relationship back that the very first and main reason wasn’t about “Bringing nostalgia back for everyone”, But it was about “To befriend with each other again”, Led them to reconnect, Cured the wounded hearts, Fixed the mistakes back then, And decided to start their journey again, Together.

Everything started since we met Although there are days when we hurt each other But just being able to think "I want to be with you" Will lead us to a tomorrow we don't know yet

Sorry for the long post but I hope you guys like it. It was pretty hard to translate all of these descriptions from my native language to English with some (that actually not some, but a lot lmao) of my thoughts there. Can I comment on tumblr or only on AO3?

Either one is great! This card especially is more designed with AO3 in mind, but some can be adjusted to suit tumblr as well, so I say go for it. Tumblr fics deserve love, too.

Can one comment count toward multiple squares if the fic fits more than one category?

Since the goal is for as many fics to receive comments as possible, try to comment on a different fic for each square.

Is there a time limit?

Do I have to record progress on the actual card?

They're done! I really want to try and make prints again as it's been years and I've never felt like I was very good at making whole posters. Dipping my toe back in with these silly chibis of each Papa with every Ghoul they've had. Perhaps they can also work as a guide for those wanting to learn all the characters? I added in a fair amount of little references with the Ghoul's poses so it'll be interesting to see what you guys figure out and notice!

The prints are on pre-order and won't ship out until November. I've put up 25 of each to start with but if they get low on stock I'll keep adding more until I have them printed and then it'll be a set amount in stock.

Hi, I would like to know how to make a list of all the ships in a fandom on AO3. For example, I use the Tag Search on "Transformers - A Media Types", but it shows that Jetfire/Starscream is the most popular with 641, but it is actually only the 6th with 1074. Furthermore, it quickly drops to showing Relationship with a single digit when I know that there are dozens of Relationship with hundreds of Works! Why don't most Works appear? Do you know of a way to find All the ships of a fandom on AO3?

Hey! Sorry for the slow reply... I was traveling and then covid knocked me flat for several weeks. :P

So let's talk about AO3 Tag Search. In general, I'm very excited about recent improvements to this feature... There didn't used to be any way to find the top ships (or characters, or freeform/additional tags) across all of AO3. But now you can* by doing a tag search and sorting by uses (descending order):

*In practice, though you won't exactly get a trustworthy list of top tags (and, as you pointed out, in some cases tags may even be missing! we'll get to that later). You will get a list where the numbers are not correct, sometimes to a bizarre degree:

For example, when you click through on the Derek/Stiles tag, you find far fewer works using the tag (note that these are the public works -- if you're logged in, you see a somewhat higher number, but not as high as in the above screenshot):

I will be posting some stats soon that show different numbers (and a different order) for all of the above top ships. But why is there the discrepancy? Here are several guesses about why some works are wrong in Tag Search (and then I'll get to why some ships are missing and what to do about it):

TAG INFLATION #1: The above numbers probably include tags used in AO3 bookmarks, which increases some of the numbers quite a lot. [Evidence: if you search for top freeform tags, you get tags like "To Read" high on the list, and authors don't use those tags.]

TAG INFLATION #2: The above numbers seem to include draft works. [Evidence: I just tested this out by finding a rare tag with only one use... I created a draft of a new work using that same tag, and even though I didn't publish the work, Tag Search now showed 2 uses of the tag.]

TAG DEFLATION: The above numbers do NOT seem to take tag wrangling into account. Some AO3 tags have a lot of synonyms or subtags, but I think only exact uses of the tag get counted in the above list. [Evidence: I found at a tag with only one use according to tag search, but two works when I clicked the tag (Peter Gabriel/Mike Rutherford). I found that one of the works contained a synonym of the main tag ("Mike Rutherford/Peter Gabriel (Imagined)"). That would match with Tag Search only listing one of work for "Peter Gabriel/Mike Rutherford." And when I created a new draft work that used the main tag, it increase the count in Tag Search for "Peter Gabriel/Mike Rutherford" -- but when I created a new draft work that used the synonym tag, it did not.]

There may also be other factors affecting the overall Tag Search numbers.

Okay, so I suspect #3, tag deflation due to no tag wrangling, is (helping to?) create the unexpectedly low numbers you are seeing for ships like Jetfire/Starscream. I suspect that many people do not use the full canonical tag "Jetfire | Skyfire/Starscream (Transformers)", and those other uses don't get counted in Tag Search. The only way to address this issue is to click through on a tag returned by Tag Search and find out how many works the tag has once you look at its list of works.

But why aren't some ships showing up at all? That's a different question. Here, I suspect the answer again is related to tag wrangling. Every (?) canonical ship tag has at least one parent tag that is a fandom tag (as well as the relevant character tags). You can see the parent tags for Jetfire/Starscream on its tag page:

Skyfire (Transformers), Starscream (Transformers), The Transformers (Cartoon Generation One), The Transformers (IDW Generation One), Transformers (Bay Movies), Transformers (Dreamwave Generation One), Transformers (IDW 2019), Transformers (Marvel Generation One), Transformers - All Media Types, Transformers Animated (2007), Transformers: Armada, Transformers: Beast Wars (Cartoon), Transformers: Cybertron, Transformers: Cyberverse, Transformers: Energon, Transformers: Prime, Transformers: Shattered Glass, Transformers: The Headmasters, Transformers: War for Cybertron (Video Games)

Jetfire/Starscream has "Transformers - All Media Types" as a parent tag, and I suspect that is why it shows up in the Tag Search for that fandom. I would guess that some of the bigger Transformer ships do NOT have that broad fandom as a parent tag. Let's check the parent tags of Megatron/Optimus Prime:

Megatron (Transformers), Optimus Prime, The Transformers (IDW Generation One), Transformers (Bay Movies), Transformers Animated (2007), Transformers: Armada, Transformers: Robots in Disguise (2001), Transformers: Robots in Disguise (2015)

Megatron/Optimus Prime does NOT have "Transformers - All Media Types" as a parent tag. I suspect that's why it didn't show up in your tag search.

So what can you do? Unfortunately, I think the only way to be sure to find all the Transformers ships is to do a Tag Search within each of the different Transformers subfandoms (and I know there are a lot) and then combine the lists of ships you find for each. And then be sure to visit the tag works page for each resulting tag to get the actual number of works, as discussed above. I also discussed other ways to get the find the top relationships here, but I think they're all either less reliable or more arduous than this method, at least for a big fandom like Transformers.

It's always a shame when you put hours of effort into a gifset, only for it to get 60 notes. And now, as people are reblogging less and less, the success of your gifset relies even more on using tags effectively to expose it to the maximum number of people possible.

Of course, at the end of the day, you should create for you, not notes, but that doesn't stop it from hurting. So, without further ado:

Guide to Tagging Gifsets

There are three main categories of tag, which I'll explain one at a time: fandom tags, sourceblog tags, and user tags. But it's key to remember only the first 20 tags are searched for; tags after that are irrelevant. So make sure every tag counts. It's also a good idea to visit a tag before you use it; if there's hardly any posts in that tag, it's probably not worth including.

Fandom (edit) Tags

Tags relevant to each fandom. I'll use Marvel as an example:

#tvedit, #filmedit, #[genre]edit, eg. #scifiedit

#[fandom]edit, eg. #marveledit, #mcuedit. Sometimes uses an abbrievation, particularly if the name of the fandom is quite long

#[show/tv]edit, eg. #infinitywaredit, #wandavisionedit. Only relevant if the fandom had multiple pieces of media.

#[character]edit, eg. #natasharomanoffedit. Mainly applicable to larger fandoms.

#[ship]edit, eg. #sambuckyedit. Mainly applicable to larger fandoms.

#[actor]edit. Note that this is sometimes the full name, sometimes first-initial-followed-by-surname. Check the tags to find the relevant one.

There are, of course, other types, but these are the main ones. It's a good idea to use these ones before tracked tags, as it makes it easier for people to find the content they're looking for.

Sourceblog Tags

A sourceblog is a blog dedicated to one fandom/character/genre etc, usually run by multiple people. Their main purpose is collecting every relevant post for whatever it's dedicated to, in one place for easy access.

They usually have names including 'source', 'daily', 'gifs', or 'edits'

Most sourceblogs have a tracked tag, often the name of the blog, and may also track the main edit tag. In that case, you may not need to bother tagging the sourceblog as well.

However, many sourceblogs go inactive, and so it's a good idea when tagging one for the first time to have a quick look in the archive and see if they're active. Just note that most sourceblogs don't use a tag such as 'thanks for tagging' to indicate they're reblogging from the tracked tag.

Sourceblogs usually have a lot of followers, all interested in whatever the blog's dedicated to, and therefore it's an excellent idea to tag any relevant ones.

You can search our blog to find relevant source blogs and their tracked tags.

User Tags

These are not always exclusive to edits, so pay attention to what people say they'd like to be tagged in. You can usually find people's tracked tag in their blog description, pinned post or about page.

I'd like to highlight - don't be afraid to tag people in your gifs! Most people love to be tagged. Although be aware it is common courtesy to only tag people that you follow/are mutuals with.

Most user tags are either #user[x] or the blog's url. Most people state what they do/don't like being tagged in, but if they don't, just go by what they reblog.

Just be aware of gifmakers that you follow, so that the next time you make a post, you can check their blog and see if it is appropriate to tag them

Usertags are best to use after fandom and sourceblog tags, to fill it all the way up to 20 tags, personal blogs are not dedicated to one thing only (usually), and therefore a lower proportion of followers will be in that fandom.

Finally, it's also good to use non-edit tags: for the fandom, character and ship. This means it's easy for people looking in the tags to find content.

Soundwave thoroughly enjoys human music and art. It even has a hacked Spotify account and will listen to music while its flying, alone, or even share it with those closest to it.

Soundwave has managed to get itself connected to the internet, and will regularly do internet searches on things it is unfamiliar with. It also enjoys watching movies and videos.

Soundwave has a strong EM field, which it uses to hone its telepathy, and occasionally share emotions it cannot express.

Soundwave is not emotionless. It feels a lot, actually, but cannot express that.

It uses many emoticons to express what it's feeling, all with their own different meanings.

Soundwave's telepathy is touch based.

Before the war, Soundwave was a gladiator with Megatron. It honed its skills and life long friendship with the Decepticon leader in the pits of Kaon. It trusts Megatron with its life because of their shared experiences. Its loyalty to the Decepticon cause runs deeper than politics.

Soundwave loves its Cassettes. It will put itself in the line of fire to protect them, and will protect them even if it means certain death. In the universes where its Cassettes have gone offline, it's extremely vengeful and will stoop to murder to avenge its beloveds.

The Cassettes were built by Soundwave's own servos. A sliver of its spark splits off, and it only has a few days to build a spark chamber, the beginnings of a protoform and install an internal repair system. The process is extremely time and resource intensive, hence why it has not made new Cassettes during the war.

Surpise, surpirse, another Lotta post from me. Put your hand up if you didn't see this coming. Nobody? No, it's not a bet I'd have taken either. Putting most of this under a readmore bc boy did this get long.

Today is less of a character analysis and more of a rant. Speficially about YamiChar and the way people apparently refuse to write Charlotte on her own.

@/t-f-t did a brilliant rant on why YamiChar falls short in canon over here, but I'm not talking about canon YamiChar today. I'm not even talking about fanon YamiChar.

I'm talking about the complete and utter lack of Charlotte fics that don't include Yami in some way.

There are five hundred and thirty five fics on AO3 with Charlotte tagged. I'm only looking at the numbers on AO3 for this. Of those 535 fics, four hundred and seventy two also have Yami in them. I'm sure you can do the maths here, but I'll spell it out anyway. That is a grand total of sixty three fics that have her tagged that don't also tag Yami. That's about twelve percent.

The YamiChar numbers as slightly better, of the 535 fics with Charlotte tagged, 340 of them have YamiChar in them, so that's one hundred and ninety five that aren't YamiChar. That's about thirty five percent, so more than double the Charlotte fics that don't have Yami in them.

But if you look at the YamiChar tag itself, there are a total of four hundred and twelve fics. So there's seventy three fics tagged as YamiChar fics that don't have Charlotte tagged. Roughly seventeen percent

That's more fics than Charlotte ones that don't have Yami in them.

I am begging this fandom to write more fics with Charlotte that don't involve Yami because, did you know, if you exclude YamiChar from the search, she doesn't even show up in the top ten relationships. There are, however, three Yami ships.

If you remove both YamiChar and Yami from the equation, you're left with fifty four fics. Out of 535. That's about ten percent.

You have to also elimiate Asta before Charlotte turns up in more than twoof the relationships in her own fucking tag. Even then, she's only in three of them.

Hi hi! I have a question and I apologise if it's impertinent but I really didn't have anyone else to ask. I'm new to ao3 and I'm still figuring out how it works. The problem is this- when I look up a character x reader, I'll see the tag included in many works that have oneshots but since it's a side character, more often than not the oneshot for the character hasn't been written and the tag has been there for months. Is it okay to do that or is it tagging something incorrectly? They say they'll write one eventually but they never do, y'know? To me it kind of feels like they're just trying to reach a wider audience but because of this I can't even filter tags and I have to manually search through the book to check if the character is included, especially when the chapters are titled only by numbers :')

Is it okay to tag things in advance like that?

Wattpad refugees do tend to use AO3 "wrong", sometimes in ways that break the rules and sometimes just in ways I find annoying and against typical AO3 culture.

I'm assuming you are coming from Wattpad based on you calling a work or a fic a "book", which is a very, very Wattpad thing to do.

I'm assuming they are coming from Wattpad given the bad behavior you're describing and the fact that they're a x reader writer.

So, here's the thing, if you start writing a fic and there's any amount of the actual fic, even if it's pretty short and bad or in a weird format or whatever, it's still a valid fanwork. Most of the time, AO3 leaves it to the author to decide how to tag (aside from a very few things like death threats in the tags or failing to use the required archive warnings).

AO3 won't stop someone from tagging a future pairing that hasn't appeared yet.

But "books" of "oneshots" are such an obnoxious Wattpad thing. This is a completely stupid use of AO3 from the "Please send me prompts" part that is usually in there to the way that unrelated fics are smashed together.

It's not against the rules, but it's a crappy use of AO3 befitting of n00bs.

Sadly, old hands at AO3 also make shitty works that are unrelated stories mashed together. They're often a whole set of kinktober fics or something where the trope tags and the ship tags are accurate, but you can't tell which ones go with which ones without searching the whole fic.

We regularly complain about that on here.

A much better way to use AO3 is to make a series titled "My x Reader Oneshots" or "All of my kinktober fics" where each separate story is its own work with its own tags.

My assumption is that this person is using the inaccurate tag both to get more eyeballs on their existing work and because they probably take prompts for that ship or something. (I'm basing this on the kinds of things people say on their oneshot books on Wattpad. Maybe they don't actually take prompts since you haven't mentioned it.)

Some people just don't care that they're annoying others and messing up the tags, but I think some actually don't realize how AO3 filtering works and have no idea this behavior is a nuisance.

On a lot of sites, both Wattpad and algorithm-driven social media, unless a post/work is very popular, it disappears out of sight. Even an inaccurate tag doesn't do that much.

On AO3, one is getting a full list of everything with the tag, going back however far. It's a library catalogue for which you should use accurate data. But this writer is probably thinking of tags more as advertising and a way to get their name out there so readers can follow them pre-emptively. They mean to write the ship in the future, so it's not really inaccurate... (And, tbh, if it were a single work and the ship just hadn't appeared yet, I would agree with them even though those are frustrating too.)

Hey, thanks for the compliment and for the great question! :) I went back and checked my January big fandom/character/ship stats and also the underlying character data, and you're not wrong! Wanda is missing, and so are others. I'm going to post graphs with data about Wanda plus a bunch more missing characters -- and some missing ships! -- shortly. But here, let me explain how some characters inadvertently got left out.

Until recently, there was no way of directly finding the top characters or ships across all of AO3. Now there is a Tag Search feature (edit: sort by usage) that allows you to do so (though, as I posted about earlier, it has some limitations). But because I didn't have access to that method until recently, I used to instead do the following:

Find all fandoms with 10K+ works. (tutorial)

Combine the top 10 characters (and ships) listed in the Sort & Filter sidebar for each of those big fandoms.

Find out how many works each of those characters (and ships) have, and make my top characters / top ship lists from that data.

This worked well for many popular characters and ships. However, for really huge fandoms with lots of popular characters, like MCU, it misses a lot of big tags. My hope was that most of the characters that were missed in a giant fandom like MCU would show up in the top 10 list of some other popular fandom. E.g., Pepper Potts isn't in the top 10 characters listed in the Sort & Filter sidebar for the "Marvel Cinematic Universe" tag, but she is in the top 10 for the tag "Iron Man (Movies)." However, Wanda is an example of where this didn't work out. The WandaVision fandom didn't have 10K works, so it didn't make my list of fandoms in step 1 -- and Wanda wasn't in the top 10 for any fandoms with 10K+ works. So I just missed her altogether despite the fact that she appears in more fanworks than other characters in my list.

I will use Tag Search in future years and hopefully avoid this issue. That method would have caught Wanda -- and when I used that method as a starting point earlier this week (and then did follow up work to address the limitations of Tag Search), Wanda came in #108 out of all AO3 character tags! I'll share the resulting data that includes the previously missing characters in a bit. :)

2. What’s your total AO3 word count? 900k

3. What fandoms do you write for? Peaky Blinders, Final Fantasy XII, Final Fantasy VII, Dragon Age II, The Professionals.

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos? Interesting and not straightforward question: I've been writing since 2007 and only rebooted my fics to AO3 in 2023. I backdated them to time of writing rather than posting live into the current update stream. I was vaguely curious to see what *actually* attracts readers through the AO3 search engine. So, my current top five are all Peaky Blinders Tommy/Lizzie fics, and given my small followers list, everyone following me will probably already have read them!

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? I do, and it’s my vain (both senses of the term) struggle with how to do it appropriately. I am conscious of how comments, particularly on an AO3 "archival" fic, can weight a reader's further interpretation/engagement of or with fic by that author, and that I'll never put so much time into comments as I do into fic.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? 7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? The fics I thought of picking for these two pretty much overlapped. Perhaps this shows just how I approach happiness – it’s moments, it’s never an ending.

8. Do you get hate on fics? Only old Dragon Age fics. Interesting period of time where any fic author that didn't unequivocally support the moral rightness of one particular character's opinions was targeted. Like: ok to write torture/rape fics of this character, but only if it was clear the author thought this character was morally right. Such a destructive troll.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? I'll write sex, mostly as part of a larger arc rather than standalone smut; often it is a partial scenario rather than linear start-to-end event written in a rhythm to support a coherent wanking rise-to-climax read. I'm pleased if people find it pushes their buttons, but I'm also not bothered if it doesn't. I do approach smut as one of many possible lenses or frames for a character, however, so smut that detaches from character confuses me.

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written? Sometimes but they have to feel really right. I think I tend more to fusion or pastiche (I think those are the terms?) rather than crossover: I take a particular character concept/theme and port them into a particular environmental context which is not possible in the canon to see what happens. The only one I still have up is a FFXII/Dragonriders of Pern fic (incomplete) which was going to be all about the horrible knowledge of socially accepted and endorsed ritualised rape and forced feminisation of a character.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? I'm not that popular to notice.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated? I have a memory of one in FFXII but can't recall.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? Yes! Taught me a lot, including the kind of writer I am - difficult to collaborate as my push to complete within a motivational urge period will always be greater than a long-haul effort, and I struggle to be available for other people. I’m either good at the front end ideas-generation, or a micro detail ‘write this particular thing/scene and fill it with goodness’, and not very good at the middle bit – the long slot of planning and plotting and aiming for consistency etc. I am so grateful fandom exists to support non-traditional prose formats which let me play with writing and thinking and engagement without needing to produce to book-style production standards.

14. What’s your all time favourite ship? I usually fixate on a character, and pairings allow means to explore that character rather than being an end game.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? Oh they all carry this potential. *cries* The issue for me is loss of motivational drive/thinking; because I rarely have good structural notes etc if I lose my immediate thread of 'thinking of everything all at once' I find it hard to pick up again later. I also stop some fics because I realise how ambitious the scope really is, and I feel like I can’t do them justice.

16. What are your writing strengths? Speed-sketcher? Completionist? Tests multiple ideas rapidly and freely and never worries about something 'being wrong' because there's always another fic to try? Intuitive gut level hits on characterisation here and there?

17. What are your writing weaknesses? Editing, pacing, I can't sustain long fic, I frequently move characters around like paper dolls for the sake of the cool and forget they need their own internal motivation.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? I prefer the kind of cant-based/dialect-based approach which splices non-English terms fluidly into English dialogue, mostly because as a child of many migrants this has been my world experience. I do suck at writing this, hence my frequent use of cop-outs to say 'language shift here, meanwhile still writing in English'. But when it’s done well it hits so many of my sweet spots.

Thank you for the tag @shrekgogurt! I'm missing these on my dash, apparently, becuase I've only seen yours and one other! I'll have to go search for everyone else's.

How many works do you have on AO3? 3 (technically 4 but we orphaned one of them out of shame)

What’s your total AO3 word count? 19,544

What fandoms do you write for? I guess technically the answer is Simon Snow and Heartstopper, but the Heartstopper stuff is also crossed over with Simon Snow, so.... I also have a collection of Harry Potter drabbles from high school (and I think even one from a few years ago???) in my phone that will never see the light of day.

Do you respond to comments? Why or why not? Yes! Because they're so nice and lovely and someon took the time to write to me, so I want to write back, but then sometimes idk what to say other than "thank you!" so I second guess myself and put off responding for a while and then one day I go "OH SHIT I never responded to that one???" and I go back and I just post the "thank you!" I'm a mess.

Have you ever had a fic stolen? Nope

Have you ever co-written a fic before? Yes! With one person (my best friend), and it's definitely the best thing I've written. I think I'd probably do really well collaborating with more people, but I'm still so scared to show people my work, especially my in-progress work! I need to leave the comfort zone, but also... that's hard.

What’s your all-time favorite ship? SnowBaz SnowBaz SnowBaz!

What are your writing strengths? Right now, I'm not feeling like I have any writing strengths. I am at an all-time-low in confidence these days, including creative writing. All that being said, I enjoy dialogue and find it comes most easily, so I think dialogue is probably my biggest strength? Even when I was starting to like what I was writing, I didn't feel like I had any strengths other than dialogue. Like I said, I'm a mess.

What are your writing weaknesses? Descrtiption is rough. And I have a hard time writing like... soft physical touch? At least if I know someone else is going to see it. Doesn't even have to be erotic in any way, just regular ol' sweet kisses and hugs and idk whatever other touches. I'm a very touch-positive person in real life, but writing it just feels awkward. And I think it does have more to do with whether someone will be reading it or not, so maybe goes back to the confidence issue. Maybe I should bring this up with my therapist...

First fandom you wrote for? Harry Potter, but the first fandom I published for was Simon Snow.
