It felt dishonest to make compilations of all of the main men in this show and leave Cheum out of it when she's part of the Messy F4. To be honest, Cheum dresses simply, but Lookjun makes all of these look very good. I really had high hopes for Cheum before this show aired, but at least she delivered when it came to her outfits. Also, her favorite pants (the jeans with a hole in the back and one in the front) was used around 11-12 times that we can see it.

Joe’s sides hurt from laughing. Nicky was still giggling helplessly on the couch.

“Anyway,” Nicky said once he’d stopped laughing quite as hard, “I should probably get ready to leave. It is quite late.”

“You can always crash on the couch,” Joe offered.

Nicky shot a pointed glance at the couch, which was short enough that most of his legs would hang off the edge, and had been hanging off the edge for most of the night.

It had been a good night, a good time, and still Joe cursed himself, because it was just one more night where he didn’t tell Nicky how he truly felt.

Nicky clumsily pushed himself up off the couch and staggered, nearly falling. Joe shot up out of his chair and grabbed him by the elbows to steady him before his brain could catch up with his body.

Nicky darted a quick glance at Joe and mumbled out a ��thanks,” before pulling his arms free and heading down the hallway towards the bathroom.

Joe started clearing up the plates from their dinner, still left on the coffee table. He was on his way to the kitchen when he chanced a glance down the hallway, where he saw Nicky, still in the hallway, staring into Joe’s bedroom.

Joe mentally ran through every embarrassing thing he possibly could’ve left out. Everything was put away, so he called, “Nicky?”

“Hmm?”

“Everything okay?”

“Fine,” Nicky said, sounding slightly strangled. Joe left the plates in the sink and went to join him.

He looked in his bedroom. It was neater than usual, and Joe didn’t think anything had changed from the last time Nicky had come over. “Is something wrong? In here?”

“Nothing is wrong,” Nicky said, still clearly affected by something wrong, “only - you sleep with that?”

“With what?”

“That thing, that I won you. At the carnival?”

“Oh, the skunk?”

Nicky had won him a stuffed skunk when they went to the fair several weekends ago with Nile and Dizzy. His aim was almost scarily accurate, so he had in fact won Joe many things, but in Nicky’s words, the skunk was the only stuffed animal worth keeping. Joe had put the rest of them in the closet.

“You sleep with the skunk I won you?”

“Yes?” Joe looked at his bed again. “Should I - not?”

“Joe,” Nicky said, sounding incredibly frustrated, and before Joe knew what was happening, Nicky had whirled him around and pulled him in with his enormous hands on Joe’s face and was kissing him, hard.

Their noses knocked into each other. Their teeth knocked into each other. It was objectively a terrible kiss, except for it was with Nicky, which meant it was the best kiss of Joe’s life.

Nicky wrenched himself away from Joe before Joe even fully realized what was happening. “I cannot do this,” he said, “Joe, I can’t, you drive me crazy.”

“I drive you crazy?”

“You’re so - you’re so handsome, and talented, and you’re funny, and you sleep with that stupid stuffed skunk I won you, and you’re beautiful, and I can’t - ”

“Nicky,” Joe said, a little helplessly because Nicky was working himself up into a state for what Joe thought was no good reason, “I’ve been in love with you for years.”

Nicky froze mid pace. “What?” he said weakly.

“Years.”

“Why didn’t you - ”

“Nicky,” Joe said firmly, “I would love to go back to kissing you. And maybe we can talk more later.”

“Oh. Right.”

They stood in the hallway, staring at each other. Joe knew every inch of Nicky’s face, probably better than he knew his own. Nicky was still staring at him with a completely stunned expression on his face, which Joe privately agreed with. He couldn’t believe that this was happening, either.

“Right,” Nicky said again, stepping closer. His hands were shaking.

“It’s okay,” Joe said, and he reached up and wrapped his arms around Nicky’s neck. “You already have me.”

The first four are in reference to a great idea I had of - since I’ve finished my lower-limit page number testing for making books; shorter fics take up less page space, and just increasing the font size isn’t as handsome! - simply making a mini book! All it would take would be to halve the pages again, right? Just cut them right down the middle! Easy peasy!

As I’m sure you can tell by the second, no. Not easy peasy. Difficult painful un-fun >:(

Obviously I still did it tho! What do you take me for, someone who could have the idea of an even tinier book and then not do something about it?? No It’s also the only one so far to have a paper bookmark rather than a ribbon!

All told it’s a bit smaller than your average manga (I love the monochrome covers on these under their dust jackets haha <3) - you can see even with effectively doubling up the pages by halving their size, it was still very small-spined!

A quick shot while it was still being made hehe ♪ It’s Out! Paired here - and the earlier one, just without its dust jacket haha - with my Zarla SC2 collection (ft. Family, Negotiations are Going...Well, and With No Obligation) - I absolutely kicked myself after the fact for not including Out as the run-up to everything, I was really trying to make a full collection in probably-chronological order! Out would’ve been a perfect start! And it only would’ve taken like four pages!!

Ah well, it was still quite a learning experience - I probably wouldn’t make another standalone of under 4k-ish just for formatting reasons but I did get some good ideas of how to do so if I wanted to! Although, my next project is going to be even more of a formatting nightmare........I’ll get there when I get there! Lol

YEAR OF THE FANGAN - AUGUST EDITION

ꕥ DANGANRONPA: DRIVEN BETRAYAL ꕥ

It's time to talk about one of the few fangans I've actually been following the production on! Driven Betrayal has been on my radar for a while now, with me pretty much solely using Twitter to sporadically check in on the story's development. So, I was ecstatic when I heard the news that the prologue was dropping this month, and taken aback by just how good it was!

For starters, I was pleasantly surprised to learn just how this fangan was formatted in the first place: a mix of longer-form videos on Youtube, and story posts on Instagram. I've never encountered a fangan that uses mixed media before (outside of maybe Penguinronpa, but that's moreso posting their slides on Youtube rather than blending both mediums at once), so it automatically adds some charm points to the story.

However, what really drew me into this story is the central premise of it: it follows Ennosuke, a survivor from a previous killing game who find himself thrust into a new one, with only his past experiences and connection to private investigator Jun to help him through it. From the pre-prologue alone so many interesting questions are raised about this story: how will Ennosuke once again deal with a situation so traumatic to him the first time? What connection does the previous game's mastermind have to this new one? Were Jun's motivations for joining the new killing game truly just to investigate it? There's so much unexplored territory that makes it all the more interesting to follow, which I see as an absolute plus in a genre filled with more by-the-books, solely-focused-on-cast-intros-and-set-dressing prologues.

Speaking of Ennosuke, he's officially joined the roster of "fangan main characters I adore just as much as the side cast", a rare feat very few protags have the honor of having! Really, the foundational work for his character set up by this prologue is amazing: as a survivor of the previous killing game (and one who seemed like a once-irrelevant side character from my understanding of the pre-prologue), he's left with heavy trauma about the event, having since given up his kendoka talent and becoming a more closed-off and jaded person. With the story laying out a trust vs. distrust theme, I'm excited to see just how he develops, especially since both Fujiko's role in the prologue and Takako's involvement in promotional materials seem to serve as a direct counter to Ennosuke's closed-off demenor.

That's not to say the side cast is slouching at all though, since right off the bat I adore pretty much all of them! More goofy characters like Rie and Fumiaki do a good job at helping the prologue feel light and breezy, more logical-minded characters like Jun and Yoshimitsu make sure the tone stays grounded, and there's even some more relatively-normal characters with fun quirks, like Dai and Shigetoki. Because of it, the cast is super well-balanced tonally, and are a joy to watch the interactions of!

And that's it, that's all! Seriously, go check this thing out if you have the chance, and as per usual, I'll see you in the next one!

FORMAT: "Instaronpa" / Video

WHERE TO FIND IT: On both Youtube and Instagram (please note that both formats work in service of one another! If you solely consume one of these, you're probably gonna get super confused, lol)

FAVORITE MOMENT: The argument between Ennosuke and fellow first-killing-game-survivor Hibuko in the pre-prologue (but if you wish to exclude that, I'd say Ennosuke and Jun speaking to one another just before the mascots show up, and Ennosuke realizing his worst fears are right)

FAVORITE CHARACTER: Fumiaki Hosekawa. Due to his status as the Qualified Youth Parody Artist, he's naturally a cocky, carefree goof who makes confusing "jokes", doesn't have any tact whatsoever, and butts heads with the more-mature Ennosuke (and apparently wrote all Minecraft / video game song parodies in this world? Seriously, that's amazing)

OTHER STANDOUT CHARACTERS: Yoshimitsu Masako, my pre-story fave whose calm demeanor and immediate desire for logical deductionism already makes him a great leader (even if I don't see him living for very long because of it, lol), and Ennosuke Shiokawa, for all the reasons listed in the main article.
