a coming-of-age novel set at an all-boys new england boarding school. follows two boys, Gene and Finny, and their experiences during the summer and winter sessions of 1942. talks a bit about WWII and what role the boys may have to play in that, but it stays pretty focused on the school and the emotions involved during this time in one's life. all the growth and transformation and oddly homoerotic, perhaps very codependent, friendship of a bildungsroman that we love to look for.

one of my personal favorite books, even considering that it was assigned reading. i truly believe many of you would like it and i know for a fact some of you can vouch for me

very emotional. that's all! i preferred the movie, but i liked the format of the book being completely in letters that Charlie was writing. they're both good! (if you watch the movie, the english teacher's name is Mr. Anderson. so do with that information what you will...!)

such a good movie, a childhood favorite. the musical has a great soundtrack too!

JUST HEAR ME OUT ON THIS ONE okay. it's about a trio of siblings, orphaned, who are shuttled from one parental unit to another while being followed by a man after their immense wealth. they quickly discover they are in the midst of an intellectual conflict in a secret organization. they must rely on only each other, seeing as all the adults around them are wildly incompetent and/or unhelpful. and it is filled to the brim with literary references!!

both versions have really fun and witty narration, and the tv adaptation is extremely faithful. i don't know how else to describe it without going overboard so i'll settle for not descriptive enough! just trust me. yes it is a kids' series and yes it is one of my favorites ever. it's the vibes of it all

i finished this in about two nights and it was extremely creatively inspiring. it was a bit predictable, but that's not a bad thing. it still had me clutching my pearls and dropping my jaw

Tape (2001) - three friends meet at a motel room and dredge up and argue over unpleasant events of the past. starring Ethan Hawke and Robert Sean Leonard.

Before Sunrise (1995) - from letterboxd: "A young man and woman meet on a train in Europe, and wind up spending one evening together in Vienna. Unfortunately, both know that this will probably be their only night together." Ethan Hawke plays one half of the lead duo.

and yeah there's a LOT more but those are the ones i've seen and sincerely recommend. not to say others aren't good but this is a (very) curated list you see.

Previously translated pair names that had been posted to Twitter. However corrections had to be made (misinterpretations & an instance of mistranslation), so this is version 2.

Note: This is the only translated thing I will be posting, I am not off hiatus. I had been meaning to archive this before my hiatus, but I also had to fix some things, which is why there was a delay.

Please consult to this post only regarding pair name translations done by me (82mitsu), any other posts or reposts you might see of this chart is the older version. (Previous version has been deleted, but I'm unaware how far the information had spread.)

If any other corrections need to be made, feel free to contact me and I'll make them as soon as possible.

Below follows an extreme lengthy TL note breaking down some pair names, it's a lot of text, so be warned once you unfold the read more.

A lot of research went into these due to 18TRIPs tendency to mix up words, use Gen-Z slang that hasn’t been picked up by everyone yet (or limited to TikTok) and make up their own words (“Omotenashisto” -> “Hospitalister”). I used dictionaries, searched forum results, looked up how people use these words on social media, went TikTok digging, etc.

I tried my best to localize in a way that should make sense even without added context. I only explained the ones that I thought might needed some more back-up in a cultural sense or because it was a specific JPN thing. Thus, not everything has been explained. However, I hope things are clearer compared to the first version that was posted. For Renga & Yukikaze: For ぽゆぽゆ (poyupoyu) there is no definition or anything for this word, but from context clues and digging through how people used it, I deduced that it means something soft and squishy like a plushie or cheeks, so to say. For Renga & Liguang: かりそめの宿縁 (karisome no shukuen) is a Japanese saying about a fated connection of bond that only lasts for a brief moment, but leaves a deep impact on your life. For Renga & Raito: Party is mispelled in the katakana as “paachii” and not the usual “paatii”. Renga has a tendecy to say English words wrong. While “friends” is spelled the correct way, both words have been “mispelled” to drive the point home. For Renga & Kinari: なぁぜなぁぜ (naaze, naaze) is JPN Gen-Z slang from Tiktok. It’s a statement made as an act for complaining, with a bit of sarcasm and irony thrown in at times. Like, “I said I wanna diet but I ate a big meal anyway! なぁぜなぁぜ” or “I’m an idol but I get more anxious doing improv than performances! なぁぜなぁぜ”. Best way I can describe the usage in this context is Renga is throwing a bit of a self-aware tantrum as to why Kinari would correct him. (As mentioned earlier, he isn’t good at English). I guessed a close equivalent would be “nuh-uh”, since that is a dismissal of someone else’s opinion without actual good reason, even if the other person has a point. For Renga & Netaro: まんまん (manman) means “a lot” but I also believe it’s a reference to meatbuns (nikuman). For Kafka & Yodaka: Hanbei is Takenaka Shigeharu, a Japanese samurai from the Sengoku era. He was known for being Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s strategist. For Liguang & Yodaka: 闘牌伝 (touhaiden) is related to Mahjong stuff. 闘牌伝 seems to be an old timey Mahjong video game with RPG elements. Rekka is a fighting game term, and I will quote the website The Fighting Game Glossary by Infil on this: “A type of special move that has multiple stages, as long as you input more commands to continue the sequence. Not all multi-part specials can be called rekkas though; a rekka tends to have exactly three distinct parts and will move your character forward along the ground with each new input.”  For Akuta & Nanaki: They went to the same kindergarten and were grouped together in the “Oden Class”. Japanese kindergartens, from my understanding from researching, tend to have a name for their class, rather than a number. To give an idea what such names could be, in 2019 the website hyenasclubs hosted a poll of most commonly used names for classes, and the top 3 were “baby chick” (hiyoko), “peach” (momo) and “dandelion” (tanpopo). For Akuta & Muneuji: My take on はっけよい輝矢部屋 (hakkeyoi kaguya heya) is a bit of an elaborate bit joking with Princess Kaguya of the Moon (from Tale of the Bamboo Cutter) because I was wondering why they suddenly opted for Muneuji’s last name instead of first. (I might’ve also just overestimated Kaguya Heya being some joke on Kaguya Hime). Hakkeyoi is what a referee shouts at the start of a sumo wrestling match. For Akuta & Ushio: I think ポジティブに腕押し (positive ni ude oshi) is a take on 暖簾に腕押し (noren ni ude oshi) that means something has no effect or is pointless. Lit. it means “pushing a curtain with one's arm”.    For Akuta & Tao: Akuta Nine is a joke on the baseball movie Gyakkyo Nine which is an adaptation of the manga of the same series, I believe. The movie is referred to as GK9, hence I made it AKT9.  For Akuta & Ryui: The original is OYAxKOBU which comes from 親分子分 (oyabunkobun) meaning “boss and his underlings”. Akuta also calls Ryui by “Oyabun”.

For Kiroku & Nanaki: Weebs who watch highschool anime should be familiar with this, but emergency staircase refers to the hallway stairs in a JPN highschool that are sometimes used as chilling out spots by students. For Kiroku & Chihiro: TuRyStA is the clothing brand they wear. 18TRIP has a various selection of clothing brands, which each character having a preference for one or another. For Kiroku & Yodaka: Zhao Yun, as quoted by Wikipedia, “was a military general who lived during the late Eastern Han dynasty and early Three Kingdoms period of China.” For Ushio & Raito: Some heavy freedom was taken with バスボムしゅわリスト (basubamu shuwaristo). After considering how to approach it in the most sensical way, I decided to translate it as “bubblist” due the other options being “hand sign list” or “bubble list”. I thought リスト might function as in -ist, like dentist, artist, guitarist. しゅわ comes from しゅわしゅわ which means bubbly. Although bubblist isn’t not that common, it is sometimes referred to entertainers that do bubble performances (in English). And I think it made more sense than “hand sign list” or “bubble list” to say the least. This was also taking in consideration how 18TRIP, as explained in the intro, gets very creative with its language usage. For Raito & Nagi: Mandarin ducks symbolize “soulmates” of some kind in China. In other words, Mandarin Duck Touring is more along the lines of “Motorcycle touring soulmates”. However, I find the mandarin duck reference and interesting pull compared to just “soulmates”, so it was kept as is. For Kinari & Ryui: “Super Darling Gap Inspection” is more along the original lines. “Gap” in Japanese is usually used in the context of when someone acts one way, but unexpectedly, can act a different way. Ex. A very shy person shows they can be super vulgar, that can be considered a “gap” of some kind. In English, people are more familiar with “gap moe”, thus gap moe was used. For Tao & Nagi: Might be a reference to Yokohama’s Zo-no-hana (Elephant Nose) Park. For Toi & Yodaka: The original is more along the lines of, in the most literal sense, “going around raisins circle (of friends).” Toi likes raisins, but Yodaka doesn’t, so Yodaka passes them onto Toi. I’ve turned into on a play on “sharing is caring” since that’s a common concept in English.

Currently I'm working my way through 2666 by Roberto Bolaño. It is very good, very dense, and impossible to even start to explain, one of those novels in a novel in a novel situations, loosely about a city in Mexico, but also a) a love triangle between english professors b) a teacher who grows obsessed with a physics book c) an American reporter sent to Mexico to report on a boxing match d) hundreds of murdered women e) a german writer. It's. It's a lot. It's very good, it's very long, I cannot explain it succinctly.

I also just started Haruki Murakami's Wild Sheep Chase, which. I love Murakami novels but they are probably not for everyone! As a starter book for him I like to recommend Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage, as it's less surreal and more grounded than a lot of his novels (and shorter). Killing Commodore, one of his more recent novels, was very fun. And if you're into sort of weird Japanese literature, I highly recommend The Memory Police by Yoko Ogawa, a sort of… sci-fi-ish story about a lovely peaceful society who, periodically, have concepts (like "birds") outlawed and thus forgotten by all, or anything by Sayaka Murata, who has what I can only describe as humanity dysphoria and writes fascinating short stories.

After I wrote all this I decided to self-shame and show off my Book Mountain, the pile of books by my nightstand I've accumilated over many, many months and mostly have not yet read:

The Field Guide to the Connecticut River is actually super interesting if, like me, you grew up in New England and never thought of that river over there as an eco system in itself. It has illustrations! Pictures of frogs! Geological maps! Super fun to just page through, makes me wanna go hike and look at ponds.

Mary Beard is a fantastic author and I've loved her other Roman-related books (SPQR and Pompeii), super stoked to take another crack at Emperor of Rome.

Ours is a really well written novel with an interesting idea — in the 19th century a group of mostly escaped slaves form their own secret town hidden by magic and isolated from the rest of the world, and how that both protects and hurts them. I just can't get into it, but eventually I'll finish it.

A Children's Bible is quite short and it was fantastic. A group of rich adults rent a summer home and bring a dozen or so children, who are left to fend for themselves as their parents drink and lie around, all while quietly in the background the rest of the world collapses.

Lies and Weddings was fun! it's by the author of Crazy Rich Asians and is essentially a remix of that, just set in England this time. But if you like that sort of thing, it's a fun, quick read.

Bright Young Women was another really good book, I just recently finished re-reading it. I very much enjoyed Jessica Knoll's first book, Luckiest Girl Alive, she's a very strong POV writer. Bright Young Women is a sort of… fictionalized version of the fallout of the Ted Bundy murders, except the murderer is never named or made out to be sexy or sympathetic or cool. It's more about what comes before and after 'the perpetrator' comes into people's lives. Very, very good book.

Another novel (not pictured, but it's on my bookshelf in my line of sight) I really enjoyed recently is Wellness by Nathan Hill: he wrote The Nix a few years back and that was also great, he has a very light and funny style even as he's tackling like. Grief and trauma. Wellness is basically about a married couple in a rough spot, examining them both, how they came to be who they are, the way your past shapes you even if you don't know it, and who they try to be for one another. Maybe halfway through the story there is a silly little anecdote that later came back and made me cry because it was so lovely and paid off so well. Definitely recommend.

1) Uea's Birthday: Home

Series

Tonkhao asks Uea to go home for his birthday. He did so for the sake of his sister and believing that his mom finally cares about him. Unfortunately, his mom still treats him like shit and his step-dad still have hots for him.

Novel

Tonkhao asks Uea to go home, saying that their mom is looking for him and that she hasn't seen him for months. He never received any birthday wish from his mom, even more so remember his birthday. Asking him to go home made him think that his mom still cares for him, so he went home. He then learns that his mom only wanted him home bc she wanted money which made him mad. His step-dad being there wasn't helping either, so it was hell house. Worst birthday for sure.

2) Uea's past with step-dad

Series

Sorn goes into Uea's room and sexually assault him, trying to make out with Uea who was sleeping. Uea wakes up and defends himself with scissors. Leaves his room and tells his mom what happened. Mom thought he was speaking nonsense. Basically sided her second husband and didn't believe her son. Locks him in the bathroom instead.

Novel

It happened when Uea was in high school. Uea goes home, tired from school so he fell asleep on the couch. Wokes up to Sorn touching his ass. Tell his mom and same thing happened: sides with her husband and lock Uea in the bathroom.

3) Uea's Birthday: Present

Series

After leaving his home, Uea calls King and seeks out comfort from him. King noticed the he wasn't okay and tell him to take a shower to make him feel better. While Uea was soaked in the tub, King comes in with a cake and greets Uea a happy birthday. They have sex after.

Novel

After leaving his home, Uea calls King to get his 'present'. Prior to this, King greets Uea HBD and says he doesn't have a gift for him and was like "can I give myself as a present instead?". Hence, the 'present'.

While they were making out, King noticed Uea looks a bit stressed and asks if he was okay. Uea was like "a little bit" and asks King to relieve his stress. King agrees and they continue making out. Round one done.

King asks Uea if he wanted to tell him something. Uea opens up and tells King that he went home. King didn't push further as he knew that 'home' and 'family' is a sensitive topic for Uea. Instead, he goes:

"We've got four more hours until your birthday ends. I'll keep giving you your present until the end of your birthday, shall I?...Happy birthday."

Then kisses him. Uea tears up because King, who was just his coworker/friend, cared more for him than his own mother.

4) Company trip room arrangement

Series

King asks Jade to take responsibility of wounded Gun and have them stay and room together. That way, Uea rooms together with King instead of Jade.

Novel (MDL Spoilers)

MaiJade are already a couple when the company trip happened. By default, they go together. However, Jade was worried about KingUea fighting and suggests that King stays with Mai while him and Uea stay together. King then goes "have you even asked your bf who he wanted to sleep with?" and assures Jade that him and Uea won't kill each other. Uea hesitantly agreed.

drawing (digital and traditional ). I adore all forms of art, paintings , music , sculptures..ect .I enjoy reading, although it's been a while since I found a book that peeked my interest ,I mostly read fanfics recently . Video games hold a special place in my heart, I LOVE the different art styles and plots in each game. I have some sewing skills, mostly for patching things up .I learned to crochet and knit recently as well .Crafting is another hobby I enjoy, I am good with my hands. I love learning new stuff. biology and chemistry r my fav subjects(i like learning about anatomy whether it's animal's or human's +plants in the medical field ). I speak 3 languages: Arabic (native), French, and English. I plan to learn Spanish, Italian, or German next, depending on my mood. I'm a quick learner and adapt easily to different situations(that's something I admire and take pride in) .i hate and can't cook, except eggs and simple stuff.but in baking ,if you give me a recipe, i will make the most delicious desserts you've ever tasted(but I still hate it). Even though I am a good swimmer (I did swimming for 2 years) I have thalassophobia (ironic) but i do like me some facts about marine biology, with jellyfishes, anglerfishes, and Caribbean reef octopuses being my favorites.

**Personality:**

My personality is quite flexible and depends on both the people I'm with and my mood. When I'm outside , I tend to feel anxious, although I do my best not to show it. I come across as calm, chill, and reserved, but I'm friendly and won't reject anyone who wants to chat, although I dislike small talk and feel a bit uneasy around boys I can be quite sarcastic with a sharp tongue at times, kinda(really) annoying. Once I get comfortable with someone, you'll find I'm pretty blunt and honest .I am polite and respectful. I've had trust issues due to past betrayals, so I'm cautious with my relationships now (whether it is friends or family ,no lover tho ,don't get me wrong i can be quiet the romantic but the only man that I would probably get attached to would be fictional for sure lol)

I am a burnt-out gifted kid , but I try to be the best version of myself in all aspects(i admit i do feel down thinking that i am never gonna make it ,but i always try to push these thoughts aside).I often feel I'll never be good enough for my mother (she has high standards for me that I can never seem to meet). I was bullied cause of my looks and weight, which made me depressed and anorexic for a year. If worry ever shows in your expression, he'll pull you aside to ask after your wellbeing. He won't take "I'm fine" as an answer either, he wants to listen to what bothers you, he wants to help in whatever way he can. He's always there to comfort you, making time even on the busiest of days.

Jamil's constant responsibilities can tire him out. Allow him to lay across your lap, or if that's too uncomfortable, lean on your shoulder, and he'll relax extraordinarially. He'll slowly doze off, fingers intertwined with yours, feeling at peace knowing you're there with him.

You guys swap clothes a lot, seeing as though you have similar styles. If you're missing a hoodie, I'd check his closet.

He's very patient. If you're ever not in the mood to socialize, or don't feel like being around him for whatever reason, he'll respect your wishes and leave you be.

He's impressed by your affinity for languages, even asking if you'd be so kind as to teach him some words or small phrases.

Constant praise. For the big things, for the little things, he wants you to be proud of yourself. You can tell he means every word of it too, by the way he looks at you with such adoration.

Since you like crafting, you could probably give him hand-made gifts. He'd find great joy recieving something from you, always treating you extra, extra special afterwords. 2023 Spring Anime

This season looks whack. There's so many notable series, there's definitely something for everyone this season. Of course starting off with the big ones:

Season 2 of Ranking of Kings is back this season. Their story telling is top tier and if you didnt' check out the first season, now is the time to do so.

All these amazing new seasons to look forward to, but this season doesn't stop there, the new series set to debut look absolutely killer too:

Hell's Paradise gets it's anime release, produced by MAPPA of course. This is definitely my most anticipated for the season.

Followed by MASHLE. While I had fun with the manga, I ultimately couldn't get past the art style. The anime should complete the picture for me and this will definitely be one of the top comedy series this season.

Lastly for the big name debut series: Oshi no Ko

This series takes a second to get into but it's taken the manga world by storm and has already gotten its english translations with only 11 japanese releases so far. The story is definitely worth sticking around for and will likely be one if not the top show of the season.

As for some lesser known series, I've gone through this seasons' release schedule and filtered through the trailers to pick out the ones that might be worth watching... I honestly wasn't expecting for there to be so many. So like I said, there's definitely something for everyone this season.

Heavenly Delusion

I'm such a sucker for adventure series, throw in sci-fi and I'm hooked. While this definitely gives me Made in Abyss and Promised Neverland vibes, I'm not sure it'll be on the same level.

So far episode 1 looks absolutely amazing. Post-apocalyptic world with the contrast of the two stories, one of kids inside a sanctuary with little outside world knowledge and the kids that live and survive outside. Definitely worth watching.

A Galaxy Next Door

I'm surprised this is even being aired already. I swear the english volumes for the manga just released earlier this year. I've heard mixed things about the series but I think this'll be worth checking out.

Skip to Loafer

I've heard so much about this series and it's honestly got the golden trio of tags. It's a Slice of life comedy romance and the style and characters are so cute. I'll definitely be giving this a full watch through.

Insomniacs after School

This kind of looks like an irl version of Call of the Night but after watching the trailers a bit more it still looks like a lot of fun. It's about these two students who're unable to sleep and what they do when they stay up. They end up joining the astronomy club and overall it looks like it'll be a really pretty and relaxing series.

Dead Mount Death Play

Most manga collectors will have heard of this series. It's supposed to be quite a decent thriller/supernatural series. While I haven't had a chance to read through it, I think it's about time we got another good supernatural show. I'll definitely be checking it out.

Magical Destroyers

This straight up looks like utter chaos. Whether that's good or not I guess we'll find out. It's under the mahou shoujo tag?? but it's about a radical group that is trying to eliminate the otaku culture from Japan. This guy "Otaku Hero" stands up and tries to stop them. It sounds wild and kind of looks like a passion project. I'll give it 3 episodes.

My Home Hero

This is straight up a western drama movie. Similar vibes to Taken this guy kills his daughters yakuza boyfriend and gets caught up in the criminal underground. It's definitely a new trope for anime so I'll be giving it 5 episodes.

Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury S2

While technically this is a continuation of a series, I feel like many people didn't watch the first half unless they were already into gundam. I never grew up with it and truthfully I just lumped it in with transformers so I never checked it out.

Lots of people have been saying that this reboot it really solid and a good way to get into the series. After watching the trailer I totally understand, the characters all look great and the story looks like a solid sci-fi series. I'll definitely be watching to catch up to the new releases.

Yuri Is My Job

I've head of this series all over the place in the manga world and I know it's one of the more popular shoujo ai. Essentially it seems the plot is that these 2 girls end up working together at a themed cafe and start falling for each other. I don't really have any interest in shoujo ai series (frankly i just started getting into romance series in general) so I'll give it 3 episodes and see how it goes.

The Dangers in My Heart

This is one of those - unlikely mc's gets attention from the pretty love interest. After watching the first episode I can say it definitely isn't the same as the others. The girl is super weird and I like his commentary of all the shit he does. Pretty fun and worth a try at least.

Loving Yamada at Lv999

This looks like a fun lighthearted romance. I'll give it 5 episodes.

Otaku Elf

Pretty much as the title says it's about an Otaku Elf. I think this hoenstly looks like a fun series and as long as you're not looking for more plot, it'll be a good time.

Blue Orchestra

While I think a decent number of people will like the series, I know for sure I'll drop it due to the cgi. I just feel that CGI isn't at the stage where it feels natural enough with the rest of the animations and it really takes away from my watching experience.

My god. I had no clue they redid this but I'll 100% be watching this now lol. They rebooted Tokyo Mew Mew.

This was one of the first anime I watched growing up.

The second season is airing this season - Tokyo Mew Mew New S2

in case anyone else grew up watching it and wats to catch up.

And of course, the isekais.

We've now evolved from just the standard isekais to isekais with a twist.

I Got a Cheat Skill in Another World and Became Unrivaled in the Real World, too.

I'll give it 3 episodes but unsurprisingly I don't think i'll stick with it.

This looks a little different from the ususal, I'll give it 3 episodes.

Why Raeliana Ended Up at the Duke's Mansion

This is a full send fantasy shoujo romance and I thought I had had enough of the royal isekai trope but apparently not. The cheese of the romance has sucked me in again with the pretty animations to top it off. I'll be giving it a good 3 episodes.

This honestly looks like fun but I've had my fair share of this kind of show. This is a fantasy ecchi isekai comedy. I'll still give it 3 episodes.

Frankly I have no interest in ecchi harem series like this but the quality looks decent so I've added it here for those who want something to watch along those lines this season.

Talking about Chibita-Kun (1969 version)

So, over a year ago now I managed to pick up two relatively good condition copies of the second publishing of the Chibita-Kun manga, serialised in the mid 1960s. Only posting about them now as I had to keep them in quarantine for a year due to possible mold (luckily this was not the case). Not a lot of people ever post about this in the English speaking fandom so I thought it would be fun to show some stuff you may not have seen. The manga was republished as ebooks in 2009, however some chapters are missing considering they were repurposed back into Kantaro chapters, but that's a deep dive we can save for another day.

I will preface that due to when this was published there are depictions of racial minorities that I strongly disagree with, and this should be kept in mind if anyone goes out seeking to read copies online.

I'm putting everything under a read more because this is going to be a massive post lol. Alt text is in the images but if you use a screen reader and are unable to hear it let me know and I'll edit the post. Honestly, I just love nerding out about old things (also, for the book collectors out there, I know you're not meant to wear gloves but I have OCD so the gloves are staying on lol. I'm not ruling out potential lead exposure).

For starters, here are the covers. I specifically searched for these editions of the manga because the covers are full of so much life in comparison to other versions. The colour combination is perfect and super eye catching. I'm aware bonus chapters from a different manga are included in the editions published in the 1970s, but I wanted to get these ones first. I might also pick up the manga where the bonus chapters come from on it's own anyway, but it's pricy.

Volume 2, unbeknownst to me at the time I purchased it, is actually a first edition. You can tell it's older considering it's in much poorer condition in comparison. It has significant foxing on the cover pages, the edges, and damage to the dust cover, with a group of pages that are detached from the rest. While I don’t think anything is missing, I need to glue those back into place before I display it. There is also some dirt at the bottom. Thankfully it doesn't seem to be water damaged and the book doesn't smell at all.

On the other hand, volume 1 doesn't look its age. I'll be displaying that in a glass cabinet with no other protection. If I were to guess, it was likely printed in the early to mid 70s instead of 1969. I'm unsure if it's even been used.

And here are the frontispieces. A frontispiece is basically a decorative illustration appearing on one of the first pages of a book. Interestingly, my volume 2 has a printing error. Whether this is because it's a first edition or not, if you look closely the yellow is ever so slightly out of line with everything else. This doesn't seem to be present in other copies of the book I've found online. There's also another printing error on one of the first couple of pages, where the panels are slightly faded and hard to read.

There's something just so charming about Akatsuka's painting style, it's so homely and comforting. If I was a child I'd be drawn to them.

Due to my lack of knowledge regarding Kantaro as the information isn't widely available in English, I've only been able to find one chapter that was definitely originally one of his, due to the cover image being identical to one used in the past in a Kantaro book. By this point he’d already adopted Chibita’s look, so the changes are minimal. Interestingly Chibita originally looked like Kantaro and was called "Kan" in a very small number of chapters in early printings of Osomatsu-Kun, but as he became the more popular character Kantaro's design was changed to match and the name in Osomatsu-Kun changed to his own.

Moving on, here is the damage I mentioned to volume 2. I like to think that the kid who originally owned this book found the image of Chibita getting hanged so compelling they had to show everyone, and as a result wore away the binding.

Something incredibly interesting I also observed is I think the explorers skit in Osomatsu San (you know, the one with Iyami, Jyushi, and Hatabou) might have been based on a Chibita-Kun chapter! The story involves a group of three explorers: Chibita, Iyami, and an unknown female character, doing similar stuff to the group in -San. I would need to rewatch the skit to see if the events align with those in the chapter, but it feels similar from what I've observed. While the combination they used in Osomatsu-San was fitting and I see why they would have changed it, I have feelings about Chibita's lack of use in Osomatsu-San and this feeds into the negative.

For now, I think this is a good place to leave it. I hope to go back and have a more in-depth look through at the stories themselves later down the line once I've repaired volume 2, but this is what I found from a first glance. All in all a really exciting purchase, probably my favourite thing in my entire collection.

This journal is a remnant of a wanderer, an adventurer of sorts.

More precisely a solo RPG journal for me, traveling through the mists, and exploring the wonderful and horrifying place that is the home setting of Ravenloft.

The Hickman couple created something in 1983 that captured the fans of gothic horror and at the time emerging Dungeons & Dragons enthusiasts - it became a cult setting for many alike.

My personal experience with the world of Ravenloft runs back to 2017 when I first started to run Curse of Strahd, the 5th edition variant of the classic module I6 - Ravenloft. I was just starting college and gathered a new group of friends to guide them into the mists of Barovia.

Since then I ran the campaign two more times, with more or less success, but I knew that it is the perfect setting for me if I ever wanted to play D&D.

So what is the premise of this blog?

I intend to delve deep into the lore of the setting and explore it through the lenses of a character who travels through the mists and gets to know the colorful (albeit desaturated) Domains of Dread.

I'll write about my adventures, as I slowly slip into the role of this character, and hopefully enjoy my time over the weekly sessions of a couple of hours, and leave behind something that is enjoyable to read as well, since I do have my aspirations of creative writing.

It is also a practice of writing and my (non-existent) English skills, since I'm not a native speaker of the language, but if I'm to write, I need to hone the skill well enough to create something that captivates the readers' curiosity.

So expect grammatical issues, or sometimes errors in semantics, as I power through descriptions and ways to express my experiences during play.

Aesthetics? Format?

I also try to leave behind sketches, and make it pleasing to read this journal. I'm already thinking about the formatting of the text so one can separate the narrative from the game mechanics, and only read the fiction emerging from my dice rolling and decisions. Solo Roleplaying is a very interesting concept in itself, that deserves a dedicated post later on.

I think my time with Play-By-Post (pbp) games gave me a certain standard when it comes to "written play" and how certain things should be presented.

Writing in first person or third person will be always one of the difficult decisions when it comes to the tone of fiction. For the setting the first person perspective offers a certain kind of intimacy, especially to convey the character's emotions, that might be a better option to convey a personal experience. Bram Stoker's Dracula (Read it if you have the time) was also an inspiration for this choice, since the plot is told through letters, written from the perspective of the characters.

And while reading I will listen to music that inspires me, I'll most likely leave a Spotify/Youtube link at the beginning of each post to have an audio ambience for the entry.

In the coming weeks I'll figure out the blog aesthetics as well, refreshing my CSS skills and/or looking for a suitable template.

So who will be the Wanderer?

I don't know at the moment, but I need to find first where I should start. There are many wonderful resources online that can help me choose the first Domain of Dread to venture to. What I also need to choose is the rules themselves. Since the first Ravenloft was written for AD&D 1E - I might opt for using an older version of the traditional formula. There are some pros for it:

It's OSR compatible. I have a truckload of OSR resources, that can be fairly easily adapted to it, thus giving me more creative and gameplay freedom.

Lots of compatible Ravenloft materials. Lots of resources exist for AD&D 2E which also has an easy conversion backwards, if I would ever need to have that, but again the difference between 1E and 2E are minor.

It's simpler. While it's obscure in nature, it is less complicated, and less restrictive with certain aspects of the game, compared to 3E/3.5.

It's crunchy enough. 5E is nice, but lacks a certain kind of crunch that I liked about the older editions. AD&D 1E might have just enough that will be still simple enough for solo play, that I don't have to spend too much time figuring out the system while playing.

In the next post I'll be exploring my options for the character and the first Domain of Dread.

But I think it's good to write down the foundation of the thought process, and I hope it gave perspective for you as a reader on what the hell I'm doing here.

No because their relationship is beautiful and I will never stop screaming about it. Everything OP said is so accurate and I love it. The writing of this show, of these characters is absolutely phenomenal! Every little detail is important. And if you look at the soundtrack - pardon me while I let my music nerd out - specifically at Reki and Langa's "character songs" or "theme songs" if you will, and you listen to the English versions and compare it to the rough translations of the original Japanese, they talk about that kind of stuff.

Langa's song talks about "New emotions have come to life/Emerging so fast" and "Colors add to unsure tomorrows" and toward the outro it circles back to "A new emotion inside is burning" these are feelings he has when he's skating, sure, but as we see in the show, he only feels truly alive like this when he's with Reki. He can live his life vibrantly and in color with Reki around otherwise his life feels dull and almost colorless again.

And then there's Reki's song. I present to you the following quotes: "I don't mind the work spent to help out/If it adds to time spent to hang out/I wanna stay there, I've gotta stay there"

"Can't stop the feelings I got inside"

"I know of a place I can be me/Fills up my heart with some meaning"

And finally, "We're never gonna be alone again, I realized"

Reki is talking about S and his love of skating throughout this song and how that community became home to him, yes, but isn't it beautiful to think that Langa is his home, too? That they follow the idea of "Anywhere is home as long as I'm with you"? And the song even goes so far as to mention Reki realizing that neither he nor Langa have to be alone again as long as they have each other!

There's also the entire ending credits theme but I want to cite the lines (all of these rough translations of course): "No matter what, I'll be at your side"

"You'll always be in my heart"

"If the world ended tomorrow/I wouldn't need anything special"

And "Let's go together, I'll go with you/Talking about nothing with you forever"

Whether you see them as romantic or not, these have to be some of the sweetest song lyrics I have ever read. They love each other so much that they will always stick by each other, they could talk forever and presumably not get bored, they have permanently cemented themselves in each other's hearts!

There are so many small details and visual cues throughout the show itself that clearly demonstrate how important they are to each other, but that attention to detail extends to the music and the lyrics and ahhhhhh their relationship is just so deep and beautiful and I love themmmm!

Never forget how they saved each other.

Langa was stuck in his own grief. He was suffering. He was completely lost and depressed, even if he was hiding it deep down. And then Reki came. He tore him out of his depression, and gave him happiness in the midst of his suffering. He became his light and basically saved him.

And then there’s Reki. His depression and insecurities took over him. He was angry and sad and hateful toward himself. It wasn’t until he saw Langa skating, saw that light in front of him, that he started to feel stronger. Langa pulled him out of his depression, and gave him happiness in the midst of his suffering. Just as Reki did to Langa.

These two saved each other, even if they don’t fully understand it. Even if they credit it to skating, it was each other. They were each other’s light in the darkness; their raison d’etre.

so it's 11.50pm on a Saturday night now and I've just properly finished reading the entirety of mdzs (in english) not including the extras. it feels so surreal and strange, because I'd started the English translations in Jan this year (I read exiled rebel's version) while sometimes reading pdfs of the 7seas one at the same time just to see the differences in translation. I remember blazing through the equivalent of 7seas book 1-3 from Jan to early March. From mid-March to now I took a bit of a break from mdzs to read other things like 2ha (which I'm still reading now), the 2ha manhua and the tgcf manhua. I managed to finish 7seas mdzs vol 4 in mid March too (binge reading sessions before bed, mostly) and then I stopped cos 7seas hadn't released vol 5 yet and I thought I'd just wait. then after a week I decided I couldn't wait that long so I went back to EXR to read what was left of the story until the end (before the extras). Still I took my time with it so the guanyin temple arc took me a few weeks to get through.

but tonight I decided to return to mdzs to finish the guanyin temple arc and that short little bit after that (everyday means everyday, meeting luo qingyang and mianmian, riding off into the sunset while wangxian plays in the distance) and now I'm at the end, also after reading the author's notes. so much effort went into it really and that makes me appreciate the story even more (thank you mxtx for that wonderful mind of yours and for the characters and story you've created!!) I'll probably save the extras to read when I get the digital version of 7seas vol 5 just to participate in the finale mood yknow.. I know 7seas isn't done with mdzs yet there's still the entire manhua to be released which is a whole diff beast but for now the completion of the full English novel merits some special mention at least

and it's like, yeah I'll def grow a little distant from mdzs for a bit while I tour other stories and fandoms and media but everytime I come back to it, to these familiar characters, it feels like coming home. I've consumed this story in so many forms (manhua, donghua, novel, now just left with the audio drama and the untamed) and I've drawn a bunch of fanart of them, even read longfics starring these characters, after a while you just feel like you know them as old friends. and getting to the end of the story and closing the book on these guys, even though it's only temporarily, just feels all sorts of weirdly happy and sad to me now. this story has accompanied me through a holiday trip in dec 2022, through lunch at work, weekends spent reading and watching it, work breaks spent reading it and looking at the wiki and TV tropes page for character info...it's just such a concrete part of my daily memories it really helped me get through this tedious thing called working life

Good morning, I wanted to try the survey event if it's still open. If not, feel free to ignore this ask. And before we get to the question, I apologize for the grammar mistakes English isn't my native language.

1. My work ethic is more or less chaotic. I'm a huge procrastinator who can't follow a plan. I tend to do everything at the last minute under the stress and the pressure. Even if I'm interested in the work, I'll zone out pretty fast.

2. Overthinking is my second name /hj. Well, to be honest I'm a very anxious person, I tend to overanalyzing every single thing. How the baker did look at me, my outfit, my haircut... What a pain. :(

3. I use to be a very extraverted kid, but as I'm growing up I'm getting more and more introverted. I like staying alone or with the few people I can trust. Honestly, I don't see why you should waste your energy by befriending a lot of people when you can use your energy to take care of your loved ones.

4. The answer is very cliché, but it would be Japan. I would love to visit this country one day, climbing Mt Fuji, eating traditional food and discovering their culture.

5. I'm finishing High School and I don't really know what I want to study. Maybe biology or history.

6. I love sweet food with all my heart, give me chocolate and you're making me the happiest man alive.

7. I live with my cat and my two dogs and I wouldn't replace them with anything in the world. But if I could adopt another animal, it would probably be a pigeon or a bird of some kind.

10. Family well... All depends on your relationship with them and how they treated you in the past. Sometimes it's important to distance yourself from them, to let go for becoming the best version of yourself. But it's also great when they got your back. So to get on a middle ground, I would say that family is important but you shouldn't let them control your life or make you feel guilty for anything. Talking about kids, I don't mind babysitting or keeping kids at home to help a friend but I don't want to be a father. I don't want kids, I would be a terrible father and I don't want them to grow up in this chaotic world. If the world became a better place, with less wars and dangers for them... Then I might reconsider my choice.

I would put you with Kazuha. He's kind and friendly and most of all very calming to be around. Kazuha likes to wander around, so he'd be thrilled to travel with you. While Kazuha can be pretty quiet, he is quite good at calming and comforting people. Kazuha understands the temptation of procrastination so he'd try his best to keep you on track, he may even do it with you. He probably isn't concerned with having children, considering he likes to be transitory and travel but he probably does like having animals around. I can totally see him with a bird too because they can easily follow the Crux

(tumblr deleted my previous attempted rb in the middle of this. welp. i'll start again. these are just the basics, there are other halloween events/limited time missions/sometimes co-op related events but i don't want to get into that unless you want to know)

OKAY take two. i don't know where guides are. there probably are some, likely on the english enstars wiki, but i learned how to navigate jpstars because i started in the english server which, while it isn't the exact same, still gives me a pretty good idea of how it works. so here i go.

here's my home menu! i hope it isn't unbearably grainy. it's got everything except my diamonds (also shortened to dia) on it. i changed the background and characters on it through the room button with the little chibi head on it on the top right- you can also change the bgm and character outfits there.

take note of the right side- that's where more of the important things are. there's some english text there.

story tab explains itself. if you open it there's like, 5 different things there, but basically the three tabs that have little red dots in my screenshot all have readable stories in them. if you read a chapter of a story for the first time, you get a dia for scouting with.

card tab lets you see what cards you have.

if you tap on a card you can see how far they are in level and in idol road. top button is level, bottom button is idol road. increasing either increases the ability of the card, which lets you get higher point scores in songs.

in the card tab, there's also a second tab on the left. that's. the archive? lounge? something like that. you put the cards you don't use in there, and if your card tab is too full new cards that you've scouted will go in the lounge automatically.

you can move cards from lounge and card tab by using the blue button on the bottom left.

scout tab is gacha. enough said.

live stage button. i don't know how much you've played, but since you're rank 9 that has to mean you've probably played the rhythm game part before. so i'll just let you know that there are sorting options at the bottom of the song play list.

leftmost lets you search by unit, high score, combo, and times played on the bottom when you click it. here's the english enstars version of the tab that pops up when you click it:

second to the left lets you choose what color of song you want to see in the list. second to the right sorts by all, favorites list, campaign songs (when there are no events going on, there are drop bonuses of exp tickets/certain gems in some songs), and songs with special difficulty. rightmost button puts you on a random song that is in the sorted list.

also, if you're trying to get idol gems, put the idol you're farming for as the solo of the song. they'll have a boosted chance of getting gems. if you go into a song and click the second tab, you should be able to select the solo, unless you're in a one-member group's song. here's an engstars version of how it looks.

there is also that 'live challenge' pop-up on top of the live stage button right now- that is a new special difficulty song that you can challenge and potentially get a title from. technically right now there are two new special difficulty songs in the live challenge but i play neither because i'm not a good rhythm gamer despite playing.

ensemble live button. that's enstars' co-op. it's just the rhythm game but now with more waiting (joking)

the office button takes you to your office. here's mine (jpstars is not my main, so it's sparse).

the bottom leftmost button tells you your office rank. the higher the level, the higher you can increase your department levels (accessed by the button next to it). these departments give benefits to your work and work tickets, but frankly jpstars idol work is a snail's crawl. i usually don't do it unless i'm farming an event (non-event idol work gives 250 event points)

the animal button takes you to a different office, one with animals. you get L$ from them. if you're curious, ask me more after you see this rb.

the shirt button lets you see what work outfits you can make for your idols. those outfits give more stats so you can clear idol work. the button to its right lets you see the base stats of your idols. if you finish an idol work, one member of the idols you've selected to do it will gain a stat point. to be able to start an idol work, you need to click the work button, select which work you want to do from the many lists, and have one of the orange work tickets. you can also use bp in it for more drops. those drops are like, thread, buttons, cloth and stickers, which are used to create outfits.

finally, the event button, the big ol one that currently has tatsumi's face on it. currently the event is over, but the past event was a song event, which gives a new song to the game to be able to challenge with 100 event passes. you get 10 event passes from using 1 bp, and 1 event pass from using 1 work ticket. using a single bp and clearing a live, you automatically get 2000 event points plus a number of event points based on your point score (or 'high score') from that specific song play. on a successful event song play, you get 10000 event points plus a number of event points based on your point score of that song play. you get your first copy of the event 5 star at 3.5 million event points.

i'm getting tired, so if you want to know more about the other main type of events, called tour events, ask me again later. hope this covered the basics for you. this took a while to type up lol so sorry if i sound dead inside, but i do hope you see this and enjoy your rhythm gaming

hello (JP) enstars fandom i need your help

i’ve been trying to get more into enstars lately but it has been a bit hard because i’m playing on the JP version and i don’t understand a single word of japanese

i’m pretty sure i shouldn’t be the only one in that case so i’m wondering if anyone had any tips about that because i can barely do anything ingame..

i follow event story through the enstars wiki but otherwise there are so much mechanics i don’t understand, i’ve been playing for almost 2 years now and i’m only lvl9

anyways, if anyone can share their knowledge or anything, please do (i also can’t find any guide online?? i’m probably stupid but yeah)

I LOVE COLLEGE AU SO MUCH MAN. AND I HAVE BEEN THINKING ABOUT WHERE EVERYONE WOULD END UP. This will probably get long cause I'm also thinking about what job they'd end up at so I'll put it undercut

I'll start with Yu cause he was the hardest to figure out. Here's what i see. Business major right? Boring but he's a smart guy and it pleases his parents.

He opens up his own consulting business but whatever he names it is so vague that people don't know/mistake what he actually does. like maybe repairs is in the name for some reason. So his first customer is some kid that shows up and is like 'bike repairs? I have a flat :c ' and Yu is like no....but I know how to change a tire. Next day an elderly man comes in like 'computer repairs? My laptop won't turn on.' And he's like no. But I can handle a computer.

Someone shows up for actual consulting but they're like. Consulting.....like I can consult you for termite advice. And he's like no. That would be an inspector. But I just read a book about termites so I can take a look. And it just goes on and on like that. Never actually puts his degree to use but instead becomes know as The Odd Job Guy around town

Chie and yukiko? Well I do actually love the idea of yukiko becoming a interior designer but specially one that gets hired by eccentric millionares to install a space station themed dining room next to the tiki bar. While chie....ngl I don't want her as a cop. I was thinking more of a fight cheographer for movies. Where she can occasionally show up in the bg of kung fu films being villain henchman #3

Kanji and naoto....I do ship them. Which is important for this becuase....kanji doesn't go to college. Instead he's a stay at home husband who runs a very popular online crafts shop. Along with a YouTube channel that's like a silent step by step tutorial place for simple to expert sewing techniques. While noato......would go to the same college as yu. Follows a strict detective to be course load. BUT is easily convinced to join yu in a couple of his g.e. classes where he picked extremely weird alternatives. I'm talking turfgrass science, I'm talking jazz studies, the art of walking, street fighting mathematics, and of course...a pizza apprenticeship. Each class giving both of them the detrimental knowledge they need to solve obscure murder cases or make a nice lunch for a get together....

Yosuke and rise. Well you've seen a bit of that. Both major in music but yosuke focuses more on learning a few more instruments and writing melodies more than lyrics. And eventually makes songs with rise (whoose finally able to have control of her own image and actually shows interest in the song writing process cause arrgghhhh I got some beef with this game forcing her to go back to the idol industy) ITS VERY IMPORTANT THO. that yosuke at least pushes rise to spice up her songs with English. Maybe even a 'Fuck' thrown in cause it sounds cool.

Teddie? Probably the only one I haven't thought of. But ngl teddie dj from your dance.....is so tempting. Oohhh ohhh u know what hmmn....he'd be perfect for a personally type radio station. Oohhhh my lovely ladies I'm beary excited to show u this next love song. From my perfect little bear heart to yours ~

Ahh some of the folkores I used for reference and that I overall found inspiration from are ;

La Lechuza - Mexican folkore about shape shifting witches that are usually attractive normal looking women during the day and shape-shift into owls at night, in some stories the owl is 7 feet tall. They often pose as babies, crying outside homes to lure people out or whistling until you come out. If you dream about them it usually means someone in your family will die. They may also warn you of something bad coming.

Black-Eyed Children- American legend about paranormal creatures that resemble young children with pale skin and black eyes, they are often seen hitchhiking, begging or on doorsteps of homes.

Nishi - Indian folkore about a night spirit calling out to its victims and luring them to sceluded areas in which they are never seen again. They often use the voice of a loved on to lure you in.If you respond to the voice, you will become hyptonised.

Sundel Bolong - Indonesian folkore about a woman thats always seen wearing a white dress and dies while pregnant or during child birth which causes the baby to be born through her back, creating a hole ( theres different version of this folkore i believe )

El Sombreron- Guatemalan legend of a man in all black who loves to court young women and braid their hair while he serenades them with his guitar but he often sets soil on their plates causing them to have trouble eating and sleeping. It's said that if he gets to finish braiding her hair, the woman will instantly become his bride.

Luz Mala- Argentinian legend about a beam of light that flows lowly above the gound and appears at night. Peasants were afraid, believing it was "lost souls" who were not baptized by the christian church. It's said if you look under the light, you will find some sort of treasure or metal objects but in doing so, a deadly gas will kill you.

I'm pretty sure I'm forgetting some but I'll add them later if I remember :)
