Controversial opinion, maybe, but Sam Wilson and James Rhodes would be far more loved (to the considerable extent that characters like Bucky and Steve are) if they were white men.
...anyways.

Pairing: Steve Rogers x Reader
Summary: It’s been two years since the civil war between the Avengers which affected Steve’s and reader’s relationship. They fought against each other, both having different opinions on the Sokovian Accords. Little did Steve know why she had to stick with the government.

MASTERLIST
---
“Mommy, juice”
Taking my attention off Secretary Ross I looked down at the two blonde haired, blue eyed humans latched onto my legs
“Sophie, James mommy’s busy right now, give me a few minutes okay”
Nodding their heads they ran over to the next room to play with their toys while Rhodes continued talking to Ross about today’s events
Damn you Tony, you just had to find yourself on the flying doughnut
The doors opened and I immediately recognized the bunch
Steve, Nat, Wanda, Vision and Sam
Steve
He looks so different compared to the last time we saw each other. He grew out his beard and hair. His eyes didn’t have the sparkle that I fell in love with anymore
His steps were taken with determination as the others followed behind holding up an injured Vision
“Mr Secretary” his voice was deeper
Secretary Ross walks over to where they stood and looked up at Steve
“You’ve got some nerve, I’ll give you that”
“You could use some of that right now” Natasha spoke up
“The world’s on fire and you think all is forgiven?”
“I’m not looking for forgiveness and I’m way past asking for permission. Earth just lost her best defender, so we’re here to fight. If you want to stand in our way, we’ll fight you too.”
Damn, that was hot
You’re not supposed to find your ex hot y/n
“Arrest them” Ross ordered Rhodey
“All over it” he shut the hologram off and turned to the group
I stood nearby arms folded taking in the bunch that stood before me
“That’s court marshal. Good to see ya Cap”
“You too Rhodey”
“Well you guys look like crap” the words fell out of my mouth before I could stop them
As if now noticing my presence in the room Steve’s eyes locked with mine while the others fell silent, probably remembering the last encounter we both had
“Well the hotels weren’t exactly five stars”
“I think you look great” Bruce came and stood next to me
“Yeah, I’m back”
“Hi Bruce” Nat said
“Nat”
“Well this is awkward” Sam joked pulling me out of my little daze
A sudden crash followed by the screams of Sophia caught our attention
“Sophia!”
Rushing into the next room I saw Sofia sitting near a broken flower vase and James a few feet away
“Baby are you okay?” I picked her up and assessed her for any injuries, thankfully she didn’t have any
“It’s alright baby girl, you’re okay” I rocked her gently in my arms quieting her cries
James walked over to me and tugged on my pants
He hates when I give Sophia more attention than him
“There’s more love to go around buddy” I stooped down to his height and picked him up
Their tiny hands cling onto me
“I take that back, this is awkward”
Looking up I was met with six pairs of eyes on me and the twins
“Mommy, juice pwease” James said playing with my ponytail
Happy to break the awkward tension I looked down at my babies
“Let’s go get some juice”
Spinning on my heels I made my way to the kitchen placing them on the counter so I could quickly fill their sippy cups with orange juice
“Here you go kids, no mess” I placed them down in the floor and they disappeared back to their play area
Remembering the broken glass in the living room I grabbed the dust pan and broom to clean it up
To my defeat Steve was already picking up the shards of glass
“You don’t have to do that”
His shoulders tensed at the sound of my voice
“I know but I choose too”
I put the dustpan closer to him to put the glass and he thanked me
I sat on the nearest armrest of one of the sofas biting the inside of my cheeks dreading the pending conversation
“Y/n you could’ve told me” he glared at me
“How? You left doing what was best for you”
Two can play this game Rogers
“I sent Tony a cell phone to reach me if needed”
He said that like I was supposed to know about it
“I didn’t even know about the phone until Bruce showed up saying that he had called you”
“Tony didn’t tell you?” with furrowed eyebrows he stood straight, eyes trained on me
“No but even if you had known it still wouldn’t have made a difference, you would’ve still been in the wind”
A frustrated grunt passed his lips
“You don’t know that”
“Am I wrong Steve?” the pitch in my voice raised
All the anger and hatred that I had bottled up for this man was slowly being opened
“No and you know it!”
Pushing off the sofa I made my way over to him and jabbed my finger into his chest
“Two years Steve. Two. Years. I didn’t know if you were alive, if you were dead in a ditch God knows where” shockingly he stood there and took it
“The last time we ever saw each other you told me that I deserved every bad thing that would follow for choosing to fight with Tony”
My eyes were getting blurry from the tears that filled them. My body shook with rage
“But you know what Rogers at least I wasn’t on America’s most wanted list” he clasped his hand around my wrist
“Don’t touch me” I ripped my hand from his grip and stepped back
“Y/n-“
“I needed you Steve, we needed you” looking into his eyes I see them softening, guilt washing over him
“I know that saying I’m sorry is completely worthless but y/n I am. You’re right, if I had known I still wouldn’t have signed the Accords because it’s no-“ he stated pulling me closer to him
“Not what you believe in”
His hand cupped my face and we both stared into each other’s eyes. I nuzzled into the warmth of his palms, his touch still had its calming effect on me
“Everyday that I was gone I beat myself up for the way we left off. I was wrong on so many levels for saying those things to you but I let my anger get the best of me”
Our foreheads pressed together as we became reacquainted with one another
“I know you did but it didn’t make it hurt less” my arms wrapped around his mid section
“Can I meet them?”
The corners of his lips pulled back into a smile at the thought of meeting his children
“Of course” stepping away from him I turned to the doorway
“Kiddos!” in less than a few seconds the massess of blonde hair entered the room and the two toddlers stood before me
“Yes mommy” stooping down to their level I spoke to them
“You guys remember what I told you about daddy?”
Their faces lit up at the mention of their daddy
“He’s a superhero!” James squealed in delight
“You guys want to meet him?”
I gestured for Steve to come closer
“Hey kids”
Their piercing blue eyes focused on him and came down to their level
“Daddy!”
Sophia was quick to wrap her tiny arms around his neck almost knocking him over with the force she threw herself at him
“Princess” he hugged her small body closely before James tugged his sister off of his dad
“James be nice buddy”
Steve pulled the little boy closer to him, enjoying the hugs that was being given to him
Looking at the three of them you’d say Steve was the one who carried them for nine months and birthed them. The twins are the splitting image of their father, it sucks
“What are your names?” he pulled back from them and smiled as they played with his suit and beard
“I’m Sophia” the little girl traced the outline of where the star used to be on his chest
She’s definitely a daddy’s girl
“I’m James” he left his dad and came over to me
Momma’s boy
The four of us sat on the floor, Steve opening his arms again for his children and the pair wasted no time in tackling him
I couldn’t help the smile on my face at the sight of the three most important people in my life finally together
The twins went on about their toys and the puppy we saw at the park today before all the alien spaceship drama
“Do I get to join?” I asked and they all looked at me
“Yes mommy!” James raised up his arm for me to snuggle up with him
We laid there enjoying each other’s company forgetting all the wrongs of this world. The gentle squeeze of my hand sent a spark through my body and I didn’t have to look to know who touched me
“It’s good to be back” Steve said to me
“It’s good to have you back”

Captain America: Civil War - My Thoughts
I know this is like 5 years late but for this, I’d like to resurrect a barely dead discourse that succeeded in not just dividing the Avengers but also dividing the fandom. Before we start, content warning for spoilers and let’s dive into this mess.
So, basically, the entire conflict of civil war stemmed from General Thaddeus Ross (who is a hypocritical dick, btw) coming to lecture the Avengers on being destructive despite conducting destructive experiments (ahem, the Abomination and the Hulk) but I digress. Then, Ross presents the Sokovian Accords which is really lengthy and we see Steve reading like a few chapters(?). Now, let us note that the Accords were presented to the Avengers after a mission-gone-wrong killed about 11 people in Lagos (lay-gos, not lah-gos that pronunciation gave me headaches as a Nigerian).
So, the Sokovian Accords were written by 117 countries and vetted by the UN asking for the Avengers to be under oversight (which SHIELD would have done if HYDRA hadn’t infiltrated it in the first place but it is what it is). Somehow, Steve made it about “our right to choose” (how?! Cause I’m not understanding) and decided to not sign*.
*he later got back to sign, then backed out when he learnt that Tony had placed Wanda under house arrest (even though it was for her protection. I do believe Tony should have fully informed Wanda about keeping her in the Avengers’ Tower)
My issues with the plot of Civil War are:
1. The Sokovian Accords were not read out loud or placed on some kind of PowerPoint slide for the audience to understand why Team Cap is against the Accords. No, the fandom wiki is not a source because that one is from Agents of SHIELD and not a lot of MCU fans are familiar with that show (yours sincerely included). Assuming the contents were read out loud or discussed by the Avengers, I’d have understood why Team Cap refused to sign the accords but since none of that was given, I’d remain Team Iron Man for this one.
2. The Sokovian Accords is not the American Constitution. Then again, the MCU fandom tends to be American-centric and most Americans seem to have this belief that the world revolves around them (and it manifests itself in Civil War discourse).
3. Contrary to popular opinion, the Sokovian Accords were about 117 (mostly third-world) countries asserting their sovereignty and boundaries, not taking away rights from the Avengers. If we go by what the MCU wiki claims about the accords, yes, some parts are absurd (like asking for blood samples and using trackers, why are those necessary?). However, when 117 countries state that they want you to respect their boundaries, I think it is best to comply. Unfortunately, respecting boundaries is one thing the USA has a problem complying with and guess who happens to represent America?
4. The Accords affected only their hero lives, not their lives as a civilian. I doubt the UN would limit the Avengers’ movements as civilians
5. Let us not forget how Steve and Clint protect Wanda from accountability and responsibility. Wanda in the MCU is like y/n in many fanfics where everyone (except for the “big bad villain” who in this case is Tony and 117 countries) seems to love her and want to protect her from facing the consequences of her actions. Anyone *ahem Tony* who has a bit of problem with her is suddenly the enemy. Not to mention how Wanda seems to have a knack for causing destruction in African countries (Johannesburg, Lagos, Wakanda)
6. And fandom behaviour from the Team Cap stans
7. Also, why is Civil War not an Avengers part 3? It’s better than making it a Captain America trilogy and then trying to frame Steve as being right.
8. I do believe that the accords were sped up which left little time for the Avengers to discuss and compromise on certain issues. If they were given more time to discuss, compromise and negotiate, I think the movie would have ended better than it had.
9. In addition, I also agree with Team Cap stans on how the UN arbitrarily deciding to shoot Bucky on sight is a human right violation.
10. “The safest hands are our own” why does this sound like a white saviour talk point from Steve? The accords is about 117 countries wanting you to respect their boundaries and the best you can come up with to refute that is saying something a white saviour would say?
11. “Even if the whole world is telling you to move...” just shut the fuck up, this is no way comparable to 117 countries trying to assert their sovereignty.
12. Look if I have to choose between surrendering a few rights as a hero and just dismissing that of civilians as potential damage, I’d go with the former because the people whom I’m suppose to protect come first. For me to dismiss their deaths as “we can’t save em all” is just not it.
13. “She’s just a kid”, a few years later and I still hate that term. One, it’s infantilizing an adult white woman (something white men have historically done and we all know how that went) . Two, while Tony was obviously wrong for not informing Wanda about her house arrest, he was right to keep her in the Tower when they were people who would harm her with every chance they could find. **
** after watching WandaVision, some people might find every reason to want to harm her.
14. Let us also discuss the motivation of those in Team Iron Man vs Team Cap
Team Iron Man
Tony: feels guilty for the events of Age of Ultron, believes that he’s stepped out of line and the Avengers need oversight.
Natasha: believes that the Avengers should listen to the public and the UN after all, if they had one hand on the wheel, they can still steer.
Vision: believes that the Avengers as a whole bring challenge which brings conflict and then catastrophe.
Rhodey: a soldier; believes in following orders especially when it is from the UN and 117 countries.
T’Challa: dude is just there to kill Bucky. I’m sure if Bucky was on team Ironman, my guy would have joined team cap, lmao 😂.
Spider-Man: not really there for a reason except to bring in Steve to Ross. I do agree that Tony shouldn’t have dragged him to the fight without Peter making an informed decision.
Team Cap
Steve: didn’t want to sign because it takes away his “right to choose”. Idk what that means or how it is relevant to the Sokovian Accords but okay. However, I understand his mistrust considering a few movies ago, we found out HYDRA had infiltrated SHIELD and as much as I believe governments are corrupt and the UN is shit, you cannot just enter a country anyhow without warning ahead of time.
Bucky: was his motivation given? I mean, I believe he joined Steve’s side to stop Zeno from unleashing the other winter soldiers. Not that that’s a bad reason, it isn’t.
Sam: again, I don’t think the movie gave us a reason for him being against the Accords. Did he also believe it was taking away his “right to choose”?
Wanda: undecided as of moment of discussion. Joined team cap because Tony placed her on house arrest. While I agree that Tony should have informed her that he was putting her under house arrest and stated the reasons why, I believe it was for good reasons especially when some people might decide to carry out witch hunts (you get it, witch hunts? 😅)
Clint: only joined because Wanda was placed under house arrest. We aren’t given any reason why he would oppose the Accords.
Scott: fan boy of Captain America, need I say more?
15. Also, to Team Cap stans blaming Tony Stark for Team Cap being imprisoned, grow the fuck up. The people in Team Cap are all adults who made their own decisions yet Tony is to blame for them breaking the law (because they did break the law), wtf.
16. “Are you capable of letting go of your ego for one damn second?” Like Steve’s ego didn’t play a part in all this too, lmao.
17. Okay, the final battle was intense and while I believe Bucky was also a victim, I can understand why Tony lashed out at him. The one to blame here is Steve because even if he had no clue Bucky was responsible for the Starks’ death, he still lied to Tony by not telling him who was responsible. It is more appalling to learn that Steve, in an attempt to “protect Tony and Bucky”, was actually covering for HYDRA!
Also, the way Steve stood emotionless while Tony watched a footage of his parents being killed. Yet, he could shield Wanda from watching the news because of how it affected her, okay.
“I can do this all day”, fuck you, Steve
18. Clint exploding at Tony is so fucking hilarious. Tony is right, Clint has a family yet he decided to fight in a war that didn’t concern him. Also, his comments about breaking backs is so tone deaf after Rhodey just broke his back!
19. If Sam was Captain America, I think Civil War wouldn’t have happened at all, from the dialogue in the Raft.
20. Overall, this movie is a fucking mess and I hate it for dividing both the Avengers and MCU fans.
Before I close with this, I want to add that I am not anti-Steve but Civil War really made me hate him. I get, Steve is supposed to be a Boy Scout and shit like that, but he’s a Gary Stu in the MCU, let’s be honest about it. Civil War should have been an Avengers movie, rather than a part of the Captain America trilogy. The Avengers should have been given more time than three days to discuss the Accords and make necessary amendments; after all that went down in Lagos, Wanda should have been made to sit out missions and maybe we could have had someone like Doctor Strange help in training her; Crossbones would have made a great villain but it is what it is; Peter’s introduction to the MCU could have been as him actually interning for the Stark Industries and forming a kind of acquaintance with Tony Stark before Tony finds out that he’s Spider-Man; Steve should have told Tony about HYDRA‘s hands in his parents’ deaths. Anyway, I’ll go read Civil War fix-it fanfics and fanfics where the Avengers are more like family. Fuck Civil War and I’m outta here.
Edit: okay this was a thought I had when I was trying to sleep but it was too good to ignore. Rhodey has a point about Steve arrogance (if that’s the correct term) in saying “the safest hands are our own” and here’s why:
Like he stated “this is not the World Security Council...neither is this SHIELD nor HYDRA” (paraphrased). This is the UN as well as 117 countries. Look, I am as anti-government as one can go and I don’t believe that the UN are reliable (plus, if we really want to go by the AoS version of the Accords, the Accords are flawed and they need amendments), however, given the US records on disrespecting boundaries in many third world countries, I can understand why 117 countries are wary about a bunch of superpowered Americans entering their country.
To us, the Avengers are saving the world. To these 117 countries and the people who have families who were killed in the crossfire (Zemo is a good example), the Avengers are a bunch of nuisances who leave destruction wherever they tread.
I am still neutral on the whole Accords as I don’t know exactly what it entails but for Steve to go “we are surrendering our rights to choose” (again, how is the Accords threatening the Avengers’ right to choose?) when asked to be under oversight is tone deaf.

It had been a year. A year without the strongest man you had ever known. A year without your father by your side. A year without, who mostly like was, the strongest avenger. You weren’t the only one to have mourned the loss of this Avenger, many in the world had mourned him, but you felt the pain more than anyone. Well, your family did.
You walked into your room, the spacious cabin like the home that your family still lived in, even after his death. You could hear your little sister giggling like crazy as you stepped further into your room, you wondered what was so funny. You couldn’t quite make out what she was saying. You saw her, her back towards you as she sat on the floor, looking down at something as she giggled like crazy. You smiled at her innocence, even after the loss your guys’ father she managed to be herself, you wondered if she knew what was going on but the empty seat during dinner time, the way verbs became past tense instead of the present.
You knew that Morgan knew of the loss in the family, it was obvious. “What’s so funny, Morgan?” You asked as you walked up closer to see, she quickly held up what was making her giggle so much.
“It’s like daddy’s!” she expressed. Your eyes immediately widen from disbelief, how did she ever find a piece of the prototype of your own suit.
“Where did you get that!?” You asked in a panic. She pointed to the box that was beside your desk, the box that was originally in your closet. A box you avoided. You quickly snatched the piece that was obviously an arm, you walked over to the box. You picked it up, your breath hitched at the contents. They were all the things you used to worth with, with your dad. Small arc reactors to even an old helmet of his. You picked up the helmet, tears welling up in your eyes.
“What’s this?” Your father asked as he picked up the helmet that looked similar to his, “a prototype maybe?” He asked as he raised his eyebrows.
You shrugged, “I just wanted to see what it would have looked like,” you confessed, “but it’s a dud,” you grabbed the helmet and threw it in the trash, “nothing compared to yours.”
“Wait, wait, wait, don’t just throw it away before I can get the chance to see what that baby does,” he grabbed it from the trash, he smiled at it, seeing all the adjusts you’ve made to it. Adjusts he would have never thought of, “this is pretty impressive.”
“You think so?”
He gave you a nod, “these adjustments will work wonders,” he smiled, “come on, I want to show you something,” he said as he gestured for you to follow him, “I’ve been trying to work with nanotech for my suit… maybe you can help me.”
You felt a tear drag it’s way down your cheek, “Y/N, are you okay?” you heard Morgan whisper.
You quickly wiped away your tear, placing the prototype in the box and then placing it in the closet, but this time on the top shelf. “Peachy,” you responded as you closed the closet door.
“Peachy? What does that mean?”
“It means,” you looked over at Morgan, noticing her yawn, “it’s bedtime, come on,” you said as you grabbed her hand. You walked Morgan to her room, tucking her in, “goodnight, Morgan.”
You began to walk away, “are you mad at me?” You quickly turned around.
You sighed and walked back over to the bed, “no,” you said softly, “I’m not mad at you.”
“I miss dad,” she whispered.
You felt your heartache at those words, “I do too,” you whispered, “every day.” Morgan yawned again, “go to bed, Morgan,” you placed a kiss on her forehead.
You turned the light off as you walked over to the door, “I love you three thousand, Y/N.”
You quickly walked into your room, you couldn’t hold it in anymore. You let out a aching sob as you held onto a pillow.
“Y/N?” Pepper was walking by when she heard your sobs, she slowly walked in, she frowned at the sight, “oh, sweetie,” she said softly as she walked over to you. She sat on your bed and pulled you into a hug.
“I miss him so much, mom,” you choked out.
Pepper placed a hand on the back of your head, as she held you in her arms, “I know,” she said softly. Pepper would give anything to have Tony alive, but she knew, she just knew that he would die in that suit. Not in a bad way of course, but in a way that would put his name as a name of honor. But seeing your pain, your hurt, she just wished he were still there. “Maybe you should go to the compound for a visit?” Pepper suggested, knowing very well you avoided the place for a reason. “It might do you some good,” but she knew it was time for you to stop avoiding the things of your dad. It was time for you to start healing.
You honestly missed everyone and though seeing their faces caused you pain, you felt a want to see them.
~
You watched as the compound came into view, the renovations were vague, it still looked like the same compound from before Thanos destroyed it. The car slowly stopped, Happy looked into the review mirror, “Would you like me to get off with you?”
You shook your head, “no, it’s okay,” you said softly as you opened the door.
“I’m going to pick up Morgan from school, so, just let me know when you’re ready,” you gave him a nod as you got off the car. You slowly made your way into the building, you let out a shaky sigh. Everything still looked the same, as if nothing had gotten destroyed.
“Ms. Stark,” Fridays voice filled your ears, “the team isn’t expecting you, should I notify them that you’ve arrived?” You stayed silent, this was your chance to turn back, to forget that you were ever there. Your chance to not relive old memories, “Ms. Stark?” But that wouldn’t be fair. Not on them. Not on you.
“Y-yeah,” you stuttered as you walked into the common room.
You let out a shaky breath as you looked around your surroundings. You thought it was funny how it was all a new building but everything was placed like if nothing had changed, and the memories, they were still there.
“So, tell me again, why is it important that everyone has their own room?” You asked as you watched your dad draw out an outline of the building that was going to be built right where you were standing.
“Because,” he said softly as he focused on the paper, “they’re like family.”
You nod, “will I have my own room?”
He chuckled, “it’s one of the first rooms I mapped out, kiddo!” He said as he looked over at you. He watched as you focused on the papers in front of you, it amazed him how much you looked like him. He was so afraid of messing up in fatherhood that he almost backed out of it but once he saw your face, he knew he just couldn’t. “Hey,” he said causing you to look up at him, “I love you, hon.”
You smiled, “enough to add my own kitchen in my room?”
“Your own kitchen? Now, why on earth would you want your own kitchen?” He asked in a surprising manner.
“So, I don’t have to walk all the way over here,” you said as you pointed towards the papers, “for a midnight snack, I can just get up and walk a few feet instead.” Your response caused him to laugh, he thought it was funny but he wasn’t going to give you your own kitchen.
“I shouldn’t have come here,” you quietly said to yourself.
“Why not?” The voice startled you, you let out a small shriek as you clutched your hand to your chest, you quickly turned around noticing Clint not too far behind you. “Sorry, Y/N, didn’t mean to scare you,” he said with a soft smile, “it’s been too long.” You felt tears well up in your eyes, you ran over to him, Clint quickly wrapped you in an embrace. You let go of the sob you were holding in, “I know,” he whispered. He held you for what seemed like forever, once you calmed down you let go of the embrace.
“I thought you retired,” you said as you wiped your cheeks.
“I am,” he said with a smile, “I just came to visit, but this is a nice surprise,” he said as he walked over to the couch.
“I heard we had a visitor,” Sam’s voice rang through your ears, you turned around and smiled at him, “I was expecting to see an old man wanting to borrow a shield,” he said with a wink.
You chuckled and gave him a small hug, “Hi, Sam,” you said softly.
He ruffled your hair as he let go of the embrace, quickly turning to the body not too far behind him, “not sure if you’ve met Bucky,” he said as he motioned towards Bucky.
“I’ve heard of him,” You said as you looked towards the man Sam motioned towards, he seemed closed off by the way he gave you a small smile, you held your hand out for him to shake, which he did, “it’s nice to meet you, Bucky.”
“Likewise,” he quietly said.
You all sat down at the couch, you couldn’t help but notice a few missing, you held yourself back from asking where Nat was, feeling a pang in your heart at the thought. “Uh- where’s Bruce and Rhodey? And Wanda?” you asked as you looked over towards Sam.
“They’re both doing some assignments,” Sam said, you nod.
“How are you holding up?” Clint asked, getting straight to the point.
You shrugged, “good, I guess,” you said softly.
“Last time you were here, this place was still being built,” Sam said, “so how are you really holding up?”
You looked towards the floor, they placed the same kind of tile from before, you wondered why they would keep everything the same? Why didn’t they rebuilt everything to make it better? There were many adjustments to be made, so why make everything look the same?
You inhaled, holding it for a few seconds before letting out a shaky exhale, you looked out the window, “there are days where I forget,” you began to say, “I forget it’s ever happened and I run downstairs expecting him to be there making pancakes of eating ice pops with Morgan but when I walk into that empty space. It’s like I start all over again.”
“It took me months to get somewhat heal from everything,” Clint confessed, “it’s not easy, Y/N, but it’s possible. You’ll get through this, it just takes one day at a time.” You gave him a nod, knowing he was right. Clint asked Sam a question, but you couldn’t help but notice Bucky get up from his spot on the couch and leave the room. Noticing that Clint and Sam were in a deep conversation you slipped out of the room to follow Bucky.
Bucky stood by a window, looking out into the land outside, “my father spoke of a man,” you could tell that your voice startled him, but he quickly composed himself as he looked over his shoulder, watching as you walked to stand beside him, “a man that killed his parents and how he was so blinded by hatred and hurt that he blamed this man for many things, but my father realized that the man didn’t have control of his actions. My dad felt guilty for realizing this way too late, he felt so bad for lashing out because it cost him the loss of a good friendship and the possibility of a new one. It was one of the many reasons he decided to help out with the quote-unquote time machine. To mend what he broke. But since he never got the chance, I want you to know that he forgave you, Bucky.”
Bucky felt moved by your words, he had never expected you to say those things, he had never expected to know that Tony had forgiven him. Bucky wished he could’ve apologized one more time. Bucky noticed that you were walking away, “you look so much like him,” he said softly when first saw you it didn’t take him long to realize who you were. Of course, he saw you at the funeral but the way the sadness took over your expressions, you looked so different now. “It reminded me of what I did and it made me feel so guilty that I had to leave the room,” Bucky confessed, “Thank you, Y/N. I hope you heal from your loss but I know your father is proud of you… I would be.”
You smiled, “I know he is.” You walked out of the room, back into the common room to see Clint and Sam in a heated debate. You rolled your eyes at the sight, you missed this, you missed the family your father had gained. The family you had gained as well. You knew it was time to heal.

Ranking the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Part 1
Tumblr media
The culmination of the superhero ride that started with Iron Man back in 2008 is almost here. Avengers: Endgame tickets are selling out fast even though the movie is nearly three weeks away, and speculation as to how this stage of Marvel’s box office juggernaut will all end is at a fever pitch. What better time to rank the movies that have brought us here? Now, no one with even a tiny bit of objectivity sincerely believes Marvel had a ten year plan and executed it precisely according to a grand vision. Looking back through these movies makes it clearer than ever that, more often than not, they made it up as they went along. In fact, considering all the retcons, changed minds, dropped plot threads and unexpected surprises, it’s amazing the continuity holds together at all. It mostly does...but the bottom part of this list contains the few movies even Marvel’s PR team probably wishes they could have a mulligan on, as well as some good-but-not-quite-lighting-the-world-on-fire fare. Let’s get to it. Warning: this article contains spoilers for nearly every movie in the MCU.
Tumblr media
21. Iron Man 2
The red-headed stepchild of the MCU. After the surprise success of the original Iron Man, Marvel Studios apparently forgot that the strength of that film was allowing Jon Favreau and the writing team to put heart before brand synergy, and decided to make a movie that was half marketing for their planned Avengers crossover. Dropping Black Widow in here felt completely jarring, and it didn’t help that her role just added to the jumble of plot threads that didn’t seem to add up to anything; at the time, many saw it as proof that Marvel was putting a little too much faith in their ability to pull off this whole crossover thing. That’s only part of the sordid story, though, because the movie is also a mess in nearly every other way. Rather than the tight plotting of the original, this one sees Tony, Rhodey, Pepper and the rest speeding from random situation to random situation---a car race, an unhinged party, a spy caper---with only the barest of plot threads holding it all together. The movie’s only saving graces are the villains played by Sam Rockwell and Mickey Rourke. Each of them deliciously devours every scene they are in, providing the film’s lone moments of enjoyment, but they’re also squandered on what feels like an extremely low stakes plan. Iron Man so well proved that superhero movies can have a soul that it even managed to make some critical best-of lists for 2008. The sequel made us wonder if that might have been a tad premature.

20. The Incredible Hulk
There are some genuinely creative moments in this action-oriented “apology” for the in-reality-pretty-good Ang Lee Hulk movie. The opening sequence showing how Hulk’s blood travels, a chase through a Brazilian favela, tossing Bruce out of a helicopter to incite his other half, and the almost-love scene aborted by the alter ego were signs of how clever the movie could have been if it were not focused on cramming in as much smashing as possible. Nick Nolte’s complex antagonist is replaced with William Hurt chewing a little too much scenery, the new super-villain played by Tim Roth is a dull waste of the actor’s talent, the finale is listless, and the entire movie is just one long excuse to show Hulk ‘roiding out as much as possible. The camera work of skilled action veteran Peter Menzies Jr. and some excellent CG on the title character make it more fun to look at than many of the tights flicks of the time, which is something. As a general rule, things that are made to chase fleeting audience sentiments don’t stand the test of time, and there’s been a quiet reversal since 2008 in which Lee’s more original and creative vision for the character has come to be re-evaluated, while this one has been almost forgotten and relegated to endless TNT re-runs. Maybe with Mark Ruffalo having one more movie on his contract, he’ll get a crack at doing it right post-Endgame.

19. Thor: The Dark World At the time, this movie served as iron-clad proof that the only reason the Thor character worked at all was Loki. The god of mischief is at his delicious then-best here, conniving from a prison cell, partnering with his brother out of genuine concern, and eventually managing to actually take the throne. Sure, that latter development was quickly undone in the next film, but what a parting shot. He’s the only aspect of the movie that fully works, and if you pop it in today you sit patiently waiting for his scenes and snoring through the second, Loki-free half of the movie. Thor himself is lifeless when Loki’s not on screen. The Warriors Three are still nowhere near the right balance of humor and bravery. Natalie Portman remains wasted on a supposedly genius scientist who can nevertheless be stunned into immediate silence by Thor’s golden locks, while Sif is still 100% unnecessary in every way. Perhaps worst of all, the underrated Christopher Eccleston is miscast as a villain who always seems to be doing bad Shakespeare. We all tried hard to forgive it at the time (and director Alan Taylor claims it was made “a different movie” in the editing room, not at all implausible) but thankfully we’ve since admitted this is mostly a misfire.

18. Ant-Man
If you were to judge Ant-Man entirely by the size-changing shenanigans, it would be one of the best Marvel movies. Peyton Reed, building off a script by departing director Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish (and tidied up by Rudd and Adam McKay) gets a ton of mileage out of the novelty of being the size of an insect, from outrunning a flood in a bathtub to that rather brilliant final confrontation in a child’s playroom, using toys as ammo. Further, Paul “I Am Immortal” Rudd is pitch-perfect in the title role, while Michael Douglas and Evangeline Lilly bring a lot to the picture. It’s in the details where Ant-Man falls a bit short (pun intended). To start, we have a single major Hispanic character in the MCU, played by the frankly more-legendary-than-you-think Michael Pena, and he’s reduced to a fast-talking stereotype. Judy Greer and Bobby Cannavale are also worlds better than their roles, which are, respectively, a cliche shrewish ex-wife and a cliche over-suspicious cop. What really drags things down, though, is the lackluster villain, who may be the most inert black hole in the MCU’s rogues gallery. He is neither good enough to engage us, nor bad enough to hate. He could have been played by a grip, for all the personality he’s allowed. The core of the film is delightful. The hill around it is crumbly.

17. Captain Marvel
Marvel’s first female-led flick is understandably a phenomenon, pulling down the sixth-largest opening weekend of all time and serving as inspiration to young girls and target to the kind of people who don’t want women in their clubhouse. So what about the movie that’s causing all this hullabaloo? It’s pretty decent. The movie can be summed up very succinctly as “safe”. It takes few chances and is more like one small step than one giant leap for womankind. Had it been released during the early superhero boom, it would still be fondly remembered as a major link in the genre’s evolution. As it is, it borrows from the buddy-cop subgenre to create what is essentially an adventure/sci-fi movie between Carol Danvers and Nick Fury. It stands out more as a callback to the kind of action pics made in the 90’s (when it is set) than the heavily marketed shared universe of the MCU, and includes standout performances from Annette Bening, Jude Law and Ben Mendelsohn. It meets expectations; it does not exceed them, and if you are a fan of the distinctive style practiced by directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, you won’t find it here. It’s only a month old, and it may be too soon to definitely say how it will be seen as time goes on. Right now, it feels more like a solid first step for the character than a fully realized final destination.

16. Thor
The original Thor has some completely solid, indisputable charms. Chris Hemsworth does physical comedy much more skillfully than he is ever given credit for, it is the debut of Tom Hiddleston as Loki, the third act is a rare-at-the-time case of inventiveness in an MCU finale, and it’s always great to see Stellan Skarsgard in literally anything. I would watch two hours of Stellan Skarsgard eating lunch, with a clone of Stellan Skarsgard. His drinking scene with Thor is a seriously underrated bit of awesome. It helps make up for the fact that the movie has no idea what to do with most of the supporting cast, including in part Loki, who at this stage seems to flail around between personalities, having crazy forced on him in time for the final duel despite it not even being hinted at earlier. It’s as if director Kenneth Branagh just let him do his own thing, and Hiddleston’s not 100% sure what that should be yet. The mirror scene is objectively amazing, but he won’t really come into his own until Avengers. The Warriors Three are utterly wasted; Branaugh and the writers just never nail the right combo of comedy and camaraderie needed to pull them off. Sif is superfluous. Natalie Portman is one of the finest actors of our generation, here reduced to goggling over Thor’s pecs. It’s not bad, especially compared to some of the dreck that gets pumped out of the blockbuster machine. It’s just rather inert.
That’s it for part 1. I’m  going to be doing some Marvel/Superhero/General Nerd content leading up to Endgame’s release. Check back next Friday for part 2 of this list, and pop by Monday for part 1 of my predictions on the fate of each character in Endgame.
