ASK FRIDAY - CREATE A SCENARIO: roommates trope with Kylo
Due to some last minute room swapping and late registering Reader and Kylo end up in the same dorm but they're mad about it and hate each other (cue intense sexual tension)
Dorm room, Snowed in, evening time like 6
The heater/power has just gone out and Kylo knows a few ways to get warm...only if Readers up for it...
been working on this for FOREVER ANON.
I loved it!
Crushed
TW: NSFW, dirty talk, dom/sub vibes, exhibitionism, kinda fluff, Kylos not that nice and is an entitled man.
Oh yeah, you fuckin’ slut.
Yes-Yes-Yes!
‘M gonna cum all over your fucking tits.
You slapped the wall next to your bed, hard.
“Can you guys keep it down! It’s 1 in the morning!”
Muffled voices came through the paper-thin wall, sounding like bodies moving to the floor. Good, you thought, at least he will get rug burn from the shitty carpet, might keep him from fucking everything that moves.
A hard knock on the wall pulled you from that thought.
“Go read your fucking Bible! I’m trying to get my dick wet!”
“Please!”
“Why don’t you go get fucked!?”
Some giggled came through next, followed by more muffled whispering. You whined loudly, trying to ignore the sounds of him fucking whatever bimbo your dormmate had in his lair. Shoving your face into your pillow, muffling your tears and wails.
You turned on your TV, drowning out the final act of his performance. Fingers poised over your keyboard to file another noise complaint with the RA… not like they ever helped you. The last time they intervened they left with a black eye and broken nose, shrugging for you to sort it out yourselves.
A door slammed shut, you let out a sigh of relief.
At least he wasn’t a cuddler.
You climbed out of bed, tip-toeing to your door to take a peek of whatever slut found her way into his room this evening. The special lady was a new cinderella every fucking week, he didn’t even try to know their names. You heard him admit it once in class to his friends, saying he called them all ‘baby’ so he wouldn’t have to learn.
You peeked out the door, blinking from the harsh fluorescent lighting of your dingy dorm halls. The walls were a screaming white, yellowing from years of shoddy cleaning. You tried to clean your room when you first came to school, but it was too disgusting.
A non-smoking dorm, ha. Everyone smoked, especially your neighbor.
“Shouldn’t you be in bed creeper?”
You jumped at his voice, exhaling harshly through your nose. You steeled your features, caught red-handed looking for his latest prey. Crossing your arms defensively, not that there was anything to hide. You were in your ratty pj’s, they were on sale at Old Navy a few years ago and you never threw them away even though they barely fit anymore.
“If you’re so interested in being a cuck,” he grinned at you, flashing his crooked teeth, “I would love to have you over for an encore, I’m sure you’d love to watch me in action.”
“Buzz off, Ren.”
“Ooo, angry tonight,” he smirked, now stepping out of his door frame. You choked a little at his appearance, no shirt on, basketball shorts barely hanging off his hips. Dangerously low, seriously, if he took one wrong move they would be on the floor. His chest was covered in fresh scratch marks, no doubt from his latest victim, a sheen of sweat glistening under the lights.
Fuck, he was good-looking.
But he was terrible.
“Ahem,” he cleared his throat, daring you to stare back at him.
You gulped, caught again. You were better than that, you were just tired from being kept up since ten with his version of ‘love-making’.
“My eyes are up here cupcake,” he stepped forward. Pushing you back into your doorframe, almost inside your sanctuary. “If you ever decide you want to break your vow of chastity, I’m right next door.”
“Step away from me, Kylo.”
He cocked his brow, “I love when you’re mean, come on. Let’s see if kitty has claws.”
You bared your teeth, fists balling under your underarms, “Not even if you were the last man on Earth.”
He shrugged, backing away from you.
“Deal, bitch.”
You moved to shut your door on him, “Go away.”
“See you in class, bright and early.”
------
When you imagined leaving for college, it was different.
Saying goodbye to your parents, packing your car with whatever small valuables you owned. Determined to make a name for yourself all the way across the country, no friends or family, truly on your own. You imagined everything would be different, the dorm would be filled with new and friendly faces.
RA’s greeting you as you parked outside, giving you a tour and maybe a group lunch with all your floormates. Getting to know each other, maybe even going to some new-student orientation event they planned for the newbies.
Classes were smooth, acing all your major requirements. Professors were kind and ready to help you at any moment, letting your artistic vision flow through your body every morning with your 8 AM yoga class.
But no.
Instead, you registered late.
Your classes all at the worst times, bright and early.
Second rate dorm, COED even… smelly dudes between your single bedroom which would be better defined as a broom closet. Burping and fucking on both sides of you while you tried to study. Your major requirement classes were boring and filled with pretentious art students who thought they were the next Picasso.
Professors didn’t care if you lived or died, only focusing on the bell schedule because they couldn’t control what the freshmen did in their classes.
Your options for clubs were limited, either join a sport or a cult.
And worst of all.
Kylo Ren.
He was your neighbor, signed up late just like you. You actually arrived at the same time, he pushed you down on your ass in the lobby so he could be checked in first. Calling you a clumsy bitch, only for you both to be handed keys to the same floor. Right next to each other, sharing a flimsy wall.
On top of that, he was an art major like you.
And since he registered late, he was in almost every class.
Even yoga!
He took your mat the first day, leaving you in tears in the hallway. He apologized afterward, handing it back to you before storming off to be with his beefy upper-class friends. Any moment he could, Ren would humiliate you. Trying to push your buttons, whistling at you when you had to cross the hallway to the showers. Tripping you when you had your hands full, making fun of you for hanging out with your sparse group of friends.
And when he found out you were annoyed with him making noise, he latched onto it.
One week he decided to recite the entire Phantom of the Opera, just because you mentioned in class that you loved that play.
He did every part, even the musical scores, you could’ve sworn he did it with a megaphone on the wall, just to spite you.
Your parents told you ‘he just likes you, he’s a boy.’
No!
That’s not how people express feelings, at least not healthy people.
Your alarm clock blared on your nightstand, you didn’t sleep so it didn’t bother you. Letting out a heavy sigh of defeat, Ren ruined another night for you, a night you’d never get back. Of precious, precious sleep that you desperately deserved.
Slipping on some plum leggings and a sports bra. No one gave a fuck about your outfit in your early morning class, as long as you went with clothes on. You popped on your headphones, trying to drone out the noise of Ren’s music through the wall. He liked to blast some god-awful music every morning.
Today, it was an old Black Veil Brides album!
You made it out of the dining hall, snatching a muffin for breakfast. Smiling at some guys you knew, waving at your friend Rose as you stormed off to the gym. The cold chill of Winter biting at your nose, it was too cold to not wear a full outfit. But there was no time, with Ren keeping you up all night and classes back to back, you didn’t have time to fuck around with dressing up.
Ren ran in after you, laughing with his friends. Big nose all red from the frost, his hair looked frozen to his scalp, probably showered beforehand. You rolled out your mat, trying to stretch while he bragged about the pussy he got last night. Making a big show of your complaining, saying you were desperate to fuck him based on your whining.
You rolled your eyes when he planted next to you, “Good morning, you ran out in a hurry.”
“I didn’t want to be late,” you sneered, not giving him the time of day, still stretching your back into child's-pose.
“How are we supposed to walk together if you run away from me, cupcake?”
You scoffed, shooting him an icy glare. Despite him grinning at you like the happiest man on Earth, god, you needed to stop giving him a reaction. That would shut him up if you didn’t give him the attention he is clearly lacking from his parental figures.
“Good morning class,” your teacher greeted you calmly, “I hope you’re all doing well. As you all know, this next week is finals week, I’m offering makeup classes to those of you who need to make up some credit hours. We are also hosting some meditation if you need time to relax between classes.”
Next to you, Ren leaned towards your mat, setting his hand right behind your back. You didn’t have to open your eyes to know he was hovering. Ready to devour you like a piece of meat.
“Hey,” he chuckled.
You stayed quiet, pushing back into his arm so he would move. Ren stayed put, purring in your ear, “Did you sleep well?”
“Move off my mat, Ren.”
He smirked down at you, “You seem stressed, do you want me to help by fucking your brains out.”
You shot off your mat, effectively knocking him onto his back. Laughing loudly in a relatively silent room of students trying to center themselves. He grinned from the floor, hands up in the air in defense, “I’m just offering to help you, Jesus!”
“Just,” you pointed in his face, hair falling out of your ponytail. Everyone was staring at you, even your instructor. Shocked you were yelling, you barely spoke in class, at the scariest person in your class.
“Just, leave me alone.”
------
Ren avoided you for the rest of the week, mostly.
Still had his nightly fuck-more subdued though, you had on noise-canceling headphones to try and focus on studying. There were still so many classes to get to, and you wouldn’t be finished until the day before Winter break… you were desperate to get this over with.
You missed your family, the plane ticket itself cost you a whole month of meals.
Of course, you would do fine in your classes, it was just the motivation to get there. Every morning you glared at Ren when he greeted you in yoga, still standing next to you like a menacing shadow.
This morning was no different, only you skipped class to study in the library. Bundled up in your winter coat, long black scarf, hair in a lazy braid, and thermal leggings on. The wind had picked up last night, bringing on an ice storm that wasn’t expected until late next week. You walked on treacherous sidewalks, dodging all the other students who were seeking the warmth of the library.
You settled inside, sprawling your books and laptop on an old desk. Grabbing out a few sketch pads so you could finish up some pieces that were due in a couple hours. Most of your finals in art were ‘unconventional’ which meant the professor wanted to see what you were motivated to work on during the year.
For yours, you had decided to draw the people you saw on campus.
Studying their faces, mannerisms, languages while they were in an organic environment. It was a great piece, and one of your professors was very interested in showcasing it in a show. You were proud, it wasn’t large but it was important for you and you wanted it to be perfect before turning it in.
Your pastels were spread out, fingertips smudged and stained from charcoal, a few lines on your face and brow from forgetting about the streaks. There was this one person you couldn’t finish, it was one of your friends from last week. She was laughing and holding a drink, the expression wide and full of emotion but it was hard for you to capture without her being there.
But you steeled yourself, you weren’t leaving this spot until you finished her.
“You smudged that dude's face,” a low voice rumbled behind you. A finger pointing down at the top left corner, “Stop-don’t touch it.”
You moved to swat the hand away, not wanting some random guy to ruin your piece with their grubby fingers. Recentering yourself, he wasn’t smudged, he was just in the corner so it looked like it wasn’t finished… what did he know, anyway?
“You didn’t draw me?”
Now you stopped, why you didn’t recognize the timbre of his voice was ridiculous.
You let out a long sigh, “Please, don’t touch the canvas, Kylo. It’s not ready, yet.”
The chair that housed your backpack slid out next to you, your things tossed on the ground carelessly before Ren sat. You scooted away from him, he smelled like he just showered. Judging by his wet hair you were probably right… “What are you doing?”
He shrugged, fiddling with one of your notebooks. Flipping through pages carelessly, “I don’t know-you weren’t in yoga so.”
“So,” you gave him a weird look, “You stalked me to the library?”
“There’s no reason to go to yoga if I can’t bother you,” he flashed a smile, dropping it slightly when he saw you weren’t playing back with him.
Silence fell over you both, the only noises the heat kicking in around the scuffling of boots and shoes to face the weather again.
“I like your piece,” he gestured to your work, “For drawing, right?”
You nodded stiffly, not enjoying his friendly tone. Like he wasn’t your demon neighbor who made it his job to annoy you and had for the past four months of your life. Ren shifted again, now leaning on the table with his cheek resting on his forearm. Looking at you with wide eyes, you never took the time to look at his face.
He had very large eyes that betrayed his emotions. Swimming with flecks of auburn, gold, and some streaks of green, blinking slowly as he studied your canvas. You looked away from him, trying to ignore the urge to draw them, how his long lashes rivaled your own. How his skin was freckled with beauty marks, creases from frowning lined his forehead and nose. You could even make out his stubble, some pieces he must’ve missed the last time he shaved.
You went back to drawing, no longer focusing on it. Just trying to understand what was happening, your tormentor was a foot away from you. Breathing calmly like a cat laying in a patch of sun. Hunched over the edge, torso too long to rest like a normally proportioned human being, had he always been this big?
“Wanna get coffee before class?”
“Huh?”
You blinked slowly, not registering that he spoke to you.
Ren leaned off, letting out a big yawn and scratching the back of his neck.
Yes, definitely a cat.
“Do you want to get coffee,” he stared blankly, “Before we head to English?”
You looked down at your mess, then back up at him. Shaking your head softly, voice quiet as a mouse, “No-thank you.”
He exhaled harshly, “I’m not gonna burn you with it, it’s just coffee.”
“No, I’m fine,” you said firmer, “I wanna work on this some more.”
Ren stayed still, probably trying to think of a way to get you to agree with him. You had known him long enough to know he doesn’t like people disagreeing with him. Didn’t have to be a college graduate to see that the man had issues with control, hence terrorizing you all semester. You didn’t want to offer him an olive branch, because he was just doing it as a joke. Probably, waiting until you were calm around him to do something cruel.
You went back to drawing, listening to him get up and leave you. Mumbling something under his breath about ‘trying to be nice’ before walking out. You shook off the awkwardness, not willing to break down and let him do something nice for you, just because he didn’t ruin your final piece didn’t mean he wouldn’t do something in the future.
The day was still young.
------
Oddly enough, Ren didn’t bother you that evening.
Not even a door slam!
You almost thought he was dead, but you saw him in the hallway when you were walking to the bathroom. Wrapped in your robe, caddy in hand, he didn’t whistle or try to touch your ass like he normally did. Just a stale smile before closing himself back in his room.
Not to waste the precious quiet, you went to work packing your bags for your trip tomorrow. Deciding to do a quick load of laundry, your hall was almost empty, so no one would be down there while you waited.
Piling up your hamper, you threw your pj's and slippers on. Remembering to grab a blanket and your laptop so you could hang out down there while you waited.
Your friends back home were all excited to see you, ready to hear all about your time away. The boys you met, friends you made, classes, all that. So excited to get home and see your cat, Gremlin, he was all alone without you. Your mom sent you pictures earlier of him curled in your blankets, saying that he knew you were coming home soon.
Maybe next Fall you could get an apartment, you didn’t want to leave him for another year.
A washing machine door slammed shut next to you, causing you to jump from your perch atop your own. Faced with Ren, who was doing his laundry in his pjs, or his version of pjs. Giving you another tight-lipped smile before leaning against the far wall. Yawning loudly before sliding down the wall to sit on the floor.
You ignored him, turning back to your laptop that was playing a crime documentary. Texting some friends to keep your mind from wandering to Ren and why he was in such a mood.
“Are you leaving tomorrow?” Ren called from his wall.
You pretended to not hear him, refocusing on the documentary, there was something very interesting happening and you weren’t about to miss how they found the killer's shoe prints in the mud just because Ren was trying to talk to you.
Then something was thrown at you, and it smelled awful.
“Oh-my-god!”
You shot off the washing machine, throwing down the offending garment. Ren was laughing loudly, “Chill out! It was just an old shirt!”
“How old was it?!”
He smiled at you from the ground, propping an elbow on his kneecap. One leg stretched out on the tile, you tried to regain a sense of calm, he was just messing with you again. Just take some deep breaths… in-out-in
“Are you leaving tomorrow, after our final?”
You let out your deep breath, sitting back on the washer. “Yeah,” you paused your show since mister meanie wanted to have a tea party. “I have to get to the airport right after.”
He hummed, “Same.”
The washer beeped loudly, echoing in the otherwise empty room. Ren watched you hop off, fixing your shorts which definitely rode up too much. Trying to not flash him your underwear as you bent to move your clothes to a dryer. You cursed when a sock fell from your pile, great.
“How come we’ve never fucked?”
Now all your clothes were on the floor.
Along with Ren, who was staring at you like you were an art exhibit.
You dragged your clothes back to the washer. There was no way you were finishing now that they touched the dirty floor, no one cleaned down here and just because it looked clean didn’t mean-
A whistle, “You good over there?”
“Yup.”
“Okay,” you heard him stretch, popping his joints as he lifted off the floor. You could feel his breath on the back of your neck as he closed in. Almost touching you, no escape, “As I was saying, how come you’ve never let me steal your virginity?”
You scoffed, “I am not a virgin.”
Ren pressed into you, pushing you against the washer now. Grinding his hips into your own, you squirmed, trying to dispel every fantasy flooding your brain. Every night you spent listening to him through the wall, imagining just once that it was you. If he weren’t such a monster, you would have gladly laid on your back and let him do whatever he wanted.
“Nothing?”
You took a deep breath, placing both palms on the top of the washer. Biting your lip as you silently pleaded for him to let you go, but also continue. You could smell his cologne from this close, how it complimented him so well. Mixing in with his dark aura, you wanted nothing more than to spin around and…
Soon you were doing just that, but not on your own violation.
Ren had his hands grasping your hips, thumbs slipping under the fabric of your t-shirt to caress your soft skin. Lips capturing your own, you froze in his hold. Unsure of what to do, a part of you wanted to scream and smack him, but the other part loved the smell of his toothpaste.
He relaxed when you relaxed, your lips still awkwardly locked together. Not opening and allowing for more, but not moving away either. You stared at him, startled to see him looking back at you. Pulling back slightly, you watched his face chase yours. Bringing your lips together a few more times, kissing at the seam.
You felt his tongue flick for entry, trying to pry your mouth open so he could explore. When you didn’t move he finally huffed in annoyance, “I know it’s your first kiss, but you’re supposed to open your mouth.”
You groaned, bringing both hands to cradle his cheeks. There was no way he was going to make fun of you, he initiated this so.
Ren made a muffled noise when you pressed your lips back together. Probably of shock and surprise, because, no. This was not your first kiss, not even your fourth or fifth kiss. Working your tongue skillfully into his mouth, you moaned softly at his taste. Just like you imagined… not that you put much stock into this but… it was wonderful.
Bringing your fingers to the nape of his neck, tugging on his dark brown hair. Just like you always wanted to, whenever he walked past you with it tied in a bun you dreamt of tearing through it. Ren returned your affection in kind, his left hand moving to the small of your back. Fingers dancing under the waistband of your pajama bottoms.
You heard him swear when he felt the lace underneath, nestled between your cheeks. Ren slid a hand over the globes of your ass, moving his hips in time with his tongue. Tasting every inch of your mouth, even growling in approval when you sunk your teeth into his bottom lip.
Petting and groping each other against the washing machines, the sound of you swapping spit barely heard over the rumble of your clothes. Ren had gotten sick of grinding against your hip bone, pulling away from you for a moment. Shushing your pathetic whimpers, he hooked the hand not cupping your ass behind your left knee.
Hiking it over his hip, opening your legs up. Allowing him to assault your center with his straining erection, oh you could picture it now. How easy it would be to just let him slip inside you.
Right here, in the laundry room.
*Beep*
You pulled back roughly, barely able to unsuction your lips from Rens' own. A string of spit connecting your kiss-bitten lips, he looked at you with pleading eyes. Grinding himself against you harder, pulling a few soft mewls from your throat.
“I need to switch my clothes,” you croaked.
He nodded, shakily setting your limb back on the floor and backing away. You watched through your own lust-filled state as he trembled. Walking back to his far wall, a hand cupping his cock through his sweats. Your throat clicked as you took in a much-needed breath, doing what you said you would.
Setting them in the dryer, all the more aware of his eyes watching your every move.
Not sparing him a glance when you sat back on the washer.
Turning on your laptop once again to watch your crime documentary.
Ignoring the throbbing between your legs, his deep breaths, and your shaking limbs.
------
The TV’s at the airport all said the same thing, “Record snowfall this winter, right before the holidays! Experts say that we will be lucky to keep power until it passes. Our friends on the west coast are enjoying a white Christmas, while we’re stuck in the North Pole.”
All flights have been grounded until further notice.
Stuck.
You could barely make it back to your dorm without crashing.
Bursting into tears several times when you realized you wouldn’t be home until it was over. Wouldn't be able to safely leave your dorm room until it passed, leaving you utterly alone.
You had emailed your RA letting him know your bad luck, he let the staff know you’d be there so they would have food and water running still.
But other than that, this was your holiday.
You slipped on the walk up to your room, sobbing loudly in the halls as you clutched your luggage. No going home, no seeing your friends or family, no Christmas dinner, no personal shower, no Gremlin to sleep on your face.
Collapsing on your bed, curling yourself in the multitude of pillows and blankets that adorned it. The room had shitty heating, the entire building had shitty heating. The entire month of December you’d been freezing, and no amount of personal heaters could fix this kind of cold.
You drifted off to sleep after crying for a few hours, letting your parents know what was happening. Setting alerts for earlier flights, anything you could do to get home. You were so tired in fact, that you slept through a power outage. Leaving the entire building to shut down, no backup generators.
And no heat.
It wasn’t until you felt yourself being lifted that you woke up to the commotion.
Squirming in the kidnappers' arms, limbs aching from freezing for a time in your bedroom. The window must’ve cracked open because it was much colder than when you arrived. Your attacker didn’t let you go, growling in your ear to be still.
Dragging you out of the building, towards a car you didn’t notice when you pulled in. With the snow swirling all around, it was a miracle they could see their own vehicle. You were thrown in the front seat, followed by your luggage tossed in the back. You stayed still, every time you moved it hurt, hypothermia. Common in the New England storms if you were foolish enough to be outside…
You about passed out when the driver's side door opened, Ren climbed in. Looking just as frozen as you, slamming the door shut and mumbling something as he started his car. You could’ve cried when the engine turned, heat blasting between the both of you.
“Hands,” his teeth chattered, holding his own out. He nodded for you to do the same, grasping your pink fingers between his own and blowing on them. “Power went out,” Ren took a shallow breath, “I was leaving and I saw your car. You were almost frozen to your bed, the window broke.”
“Th-thank you-u-u.”
Ren cringed at your fingers, slowly gaining back their normal color. “I tried to grab everything I could, like your backpack and luggage. But we can’t stay there, we’ll fucking freeze.”
You nodded, tugging your hands away to curl into your chest. Thankful that Ren had enough sense to grab blankets, stuffing them in your lap from the backseat. You thought about grabbing your phone, but you could barely make a fist so it would do you no good.
“My plane g-g-got ground-d-ed.”
Ren shivered, nodding sharply, “Mine too, my mom got me a hotel room not far from here to stay until the storm passes. So, I’m taking us there.”
“Okay.”
You didn’t say anything else, not wanting to distract him from the treacherous roads. Thank god he had a Jeep, or else you would’ve died. You couldn’t see more than ten feet ahead, less than that when you were on the highway out of the city.
Ren kept mumbling things like it’s okay, I’m sorry, I know it's cold, whenever you shivered and took in sharp breaths. You must’ve been out for a while, to get this bad. A quick look at the clock in his car said you’d been asleep for three hours, who knows what would’ve happened if he hadn’t noticed your car…
He helped you out, more carried you, towards the check-in desk. Too worried you would pass out in the car if he left you for too long, the front desk lady was quick and sweet. Making sure to send up extra blankets and pillows to your suite. Ren had you walk up with him, so he wouldn’t have to carry you and the luggage on separate trips.
You clutched his hand like a child, tight enough for his knuckles to turn white. But he was so warm, it’s all you could think about. All you wanted was to be warm, nodding blindly to whatever Ren said to do.
Plug your phone in, check.
Let him talk to your mom, check.
Draw a bath for you, check.
Climb in the bath with you, double-check.
It wasn’t until you were defrosted in the clawfoot tub that you realized you were naked with him.
Rens chest against your back, holding you like his life depended on it. Judging by his shaking, you both were probably suffering from acute hypothermia. You had been silent for so long your voice spooked him a little, “Thank you.”
He hummed into your hair, which was sitting on top of your head in a messy bun. “Are you okay?”
You nodded slowly, “Can we go lay down?”
“Yeah,” Ren hastily got out of the tub, draining it and wrapping you in plush towels. You were still too cold to blush from your nakedness, not how you pictured this going. You imagined you would finally give into him on some drunken party night, barely remembering his reaction to seeing you nude.
But now he had seen you half-frozen, forced to cradle you back to life.
------
You squinted from your cocoon, greeted by a dimly lit room.
One spare lamp on a dingy-looking nightstand, well it wasn’t terrible. It was better than your nightstand in your dorm room… where was your dorm room anyway?
Something vibrated behind you, followed by a heavyweight sprawling against your back.
You held your breath, you were in a hotel.
With a stranger.
“Shit,” you whispered.
Okay, you could wiggle out of here. You took a moment to study the room, there was the lamp from before, and some curtains on a metal rod in the far corner. If you managed to get out without being detected you could knock out the assailant.
“You smell so good.”
More weight settled on you, now you were trapped. This bear was closing in, who knows what happened while you were asleep! All you could remember was falling asleep at your dorm after the upsetting trip to the airport, then being dragged away.
Your fingers burning when you tried to use them, being shoved in a car…
Kylo.
“Kylo?!”
“Mhm.”
You threw your arms up, successfully throwing him off you and the covers. Your limbs screaming at the sudden movement, you were still suffering from the cold. Next to you, curled in a ball, totally catlike, was Ren.
A sleepy smile gracing his lips, hands curled under his cheek, and legs moving towards his chest, Like a child under a blanket. You gasped when you saw he was naked, “Fuck!”
You were too.
“What the fuck, Ren!?”
“Stop yelling,” you watched his hand bat his nose like an animal, “Come back, you were warm.”
You huffed, flailing off the bed in search of your bags.
Memories flooding back to you, he took you here after saving your life.
The bath.
Ugh, bad time to remember your kiss the night before.
Ren sat up in bed, rubbing his eyes and blinking slowly. You flushed red when you looked between his legs, shit. How does he walk around with that? Is that why he has bad posture? You choked on your spit when he spread his legs out.
Sprawling completely on the mattress like he wasn’t in a room with a stranger.
“Snow hasn’t stopped,” Ren yawned, snapping a hand and pointing between his legs, “Come back.”
“I’m not doing anything until you have clothes on.”
He rolled his eyes, now looking you up and down. Focusing on your bare tits, swinging around with your erratic movements. You watched him lick his lips, wagging his eyebrows, Come on, don’t you want to sit back on the bed?”
You shook your head, crouching down to your bag. Trying to not flash him more of your goods, but that didn’t work. Not with him leaning to the side of the bed to make a show of him peeping on you.
A wolfish grin splitting his face, “You have a nice ass.”
“Can you stop,” you huffed, tugging on some sweats you found.
Ren made a pouting noise when you stood, pushing his bottom lip out while you threaded your arms through a t-shirt. You shivered a little-it was still freezing in the room. Probably from the weather, it sounded like it got worse… hopefully this place would keep power.
You looked back at the bed, Ren was still manspreading. One of his large paws crawling towards his cock, watching you with the same smirk. He let out a soft sigh when he touched himself, eyes momentarily shutting in bliss.
“Do you have to do that with me here?”
He cracked an eye open, “Do you have to be that far away?”
You scoffed, moving to the corner of the room. Shivering since you were near the window, you plopped down in the cheap armchair. Ignoring the sounds of his fist gliding along his cock, you tucked your feet under your body. Humming a tune to ignore the arousal growing between your legs, there was no way you were caving to him.
What kind of man does that with a complete stranger present!?
More importantly, why was it turning you on?
“Come here,” he whistled, you spared a glance at him. Blushing profusely at the sight, his cock was now fully erect. Standing tall and proud, tip flushed almost purple from want. You quickly looked away, trying to swallow down the drool that gathered in your mouth.
What would happen if you gave in?
Not like it would hurt you… he looked so delicious.
“If I come over there, what's gonna happen,” you whispered, determined to stay put.
With a deep breath, the mattress groaned under his weight, probably leaning back to get comfortable. He seemed to love you being there, watching him, or trying not to. Ren made a small non-committal scoff, “Whatever you want to happen, baby.”
“Don’t call me that, you know my name.”
“Meow.”
Your head snapped towards him, met with his grin. “Come on-you really want me to do this by myself?” he waved his cock, fist tight around the base. You rolled your eyes, training your eyes to focus on the least attractive part about him.
You were coming up empty, all you could stare at was his cock.
The prominent vein along the underside thrumming in time with his heartbeat. You could practically feel it along your tongue, rigid and stiff. Slowly, you stood from the chair, met with a soft whine from Ren. Eying your hungrily as you sauntered over, you planted a knee in the mattress.
Between his legs, which were spread obscenely wide, he licked his lips in anticipation.
“If I help you, are you going to be nicer to me?”
He nodded, chest taking in sharp breaths. You slowly leaned back on your heels, stripping your top off, despite him seeing you naked earlier. Surprised when he bit his bottom lip, watching you play with your tits, rolling them in the palm of your hand. Just to make him squirm a bit, “I’ll be nicer, whatever you want.”
“I’m really cold still,” you spoke softly, making sure to lean in close enough to graze his lips with your own before pulling away, “Can you help warm me up?”
“Yes,” Ren's hands shot out, kneading your flesh a few times. Debating to grasp your tits or the small of your waist, like a kid in a candy store. So many options, but you didn’t want to wait. If you were doing this, it would be about you.
“Eat me out.”
He stilled, cocking a brow, “Excuse me?”
“You heard me,” you exhaled on his neck, being sure to drag your kitty claws along his chest. Briefly grazing his nipples, savoring the way he gasped. “Eat me out, if you make me cum, I’ll let you fuck me. Like the desperate slut you are.”
Ren scowled for a moment, nudging your face from his neck. Eyes dancing across your face before capturing your lips, moaning softly in your mouth, “I can make you cum so hard you’ll never want another man again.”
You placed a soft kiss, rolling onto your back dramatically. Splaying your legs wide, “If that's true, why do you fuck a different girl every week?”
He growled at you, actually growled.
Hands no longer soft in their quest to memorize your skin, instead Ren pinned your legs hard enough for them to pop. Making you squeal from the stretch, “How fast do you think I can make you cum? Hm?”
Before you could answer, he dove in.
Lips wrapping around your clit and suckling fast, tongue flicking out every few seconds. You were already bucking up to meet him, but his firm hold kept you flush. While his tongue began to lap thick stripes along the seam of your pussy. Briefly hooking the tip into your entrance, both of you moaning when he tasted your wetness.
“Shit-Kylo!”
“Mm,” his voice vibrated against your clit, continuing his assault until you choked on your spit. You buried your fingers in his hair, keeping him in that right spot. “I’m so fucking close,” you cried out, pleading his name over and over and over.
“You know,” he popped off, smacking his lips that were glistening with your cum, “I’d rather you cum on my cock.”
“Wait-”
Ren flipped you onto your chest, yanking your hips into the air. You barely had time to take a breath before he shoved his cock inside you. His breath hitched as he sank to the hilt, you groaned at the stretch. Now this, this you could get used to.
He pulled out slowly, you heard him swear under his breath. Leaving just the tip of his cock inside and ramming his hips into yours. Pulling a loud scream from your lungs, Ren chuckled at that. Pumping his cock at a rough pace, “Shh-you’re going to upset our neighbors.”
You huffed, cheap shot, angling your hips a little so his cock would rub up against your front wall. Moaning when he picked up the pace, skin slapping skin. Ren leaned over your form, planting a hand on the headboard to keep it from knocking. You weakly lifted your head, clenching at the sight of his knuckles turning white.
All you could do was sit and take it, revealing in the bliss you’d denied yourself for four months.
-------
Ren dropped you both off at the airport two days later.
You spent three days together, fucking each other's brains out.
Choking on his cock while he was brushing his teeth, eating you out while you read through your newsfeed. Bouncing on his cock while he fed you breakfast, you didn’t need to change clothes the entire vacation.
But you wanted to go home and were thankful for the storm ending so you could head home. It was a little awkward, Ren wasn’t very excited about the snow stopping. It felt like he was trying to stall you leaving but reluctantly listened to your desire to fly home.
“Got everything?” he mumbled, hitching his backpack over his shoulder. The two of you were waiting in the TSA line, about to part ways to head home. You nodded, giving him a tight smile before stepping up on your own.
Ignoring the feeling of his eyes on the back of your head.
Both of you stood awkwardly after making it through, “Well-my gates over here,” you pointed behind you. Ren hummed in acknowledgment, kicking at the ground instead of looking at you.
“Thanks for letting me crash with you,” you tried again, still nothing.
You groaned, spinning on your heel. Back to being an asshole, you were kicking yourself for thinking he would be nicer. All he wanted was some pussy, and you willingly gave into him when you should’ve remained strong.
Your parents picked you up back at home, lots of tears and laughs were shared. Thankful that you made it home without freezing, your mom was grateful for your friend who saved your life. She wanted to call him and tell him how much she appreciated it but you shrugged it off, he was just being nice. He wasn’t your boyfriend or anything, you left out the part that he was the neighbor you always complained about.
Collapsing on your bed felt surreal like you would wake up and be back in the hotel room at any moment. It was odd not sleeping next to him, you had grown accustomed to his clingy arms. Circling you in the middle of the night when he thought you were dead asleep, smelling your hair before tucking you into his naked chest.
You tossed and turned all night, groaning when you were woken by your siblings to get up the next morning. Barely sleeping a wink, you resolved to take a nap later to try and not spoil your trip back home.
At breakfast, your mom yelled at you from the kitchen.
“Hey hon, someone’s calling you!”
“Just answer it,” you groaned through a mouthful of cereal. Briefly hearing your mother answer in a typical chipper tone, stalling mid-sentence before she yelled again, “It’s someone named Kyle?”
Shit, you shot to the kitchen.
Snatching the phone and escaping to the living room where no one was hiding.
“Kylo?”
Hey, didn’t think you’d answer.
“How’d you get my number?”
Took it while you were napping the other day, I knew you wouldn’t give it to me willingly.
You rolled your eyes, “Alright creeper, what’s up?”
Just wanted to talk or whatever, felt weird not to.
Silence.
Are you gonna let me buy you coffee when we are back?
“You were being serious about that?”
A scoff.
Yeah-or we could just fuck again if that’s all you want from this.
“Coffee sounds good.”
Cool. Cool.
It’s a date.

Howl's Moving Castle & the Power Narrative Holds Over Reality
Like most 90s borns, my first anime was Pokémon. I watched the first three seasons diligently, and my tooth fairy gifts were always VHSs of memorable episodes. But like most Millennials and even Gen-X before us, my first real entryway to Japanese culture was Hayao Miyazaki. On the tiny TV screen, behind even for 2002, where my mother would watch her TV shows as she worked out, I watched Spirited Away. Chihiro/Sen's coming-of-age story and the movie's numerous themes deserves their own essay, and one I think better bloggers, vloggers and ordinary people have written before me. But after such a masterpiece, I jumped at the chance to see the next Studio Ghibli movie, Howl's Moving Castle. I rushed to the local library to read the book before it aired in the nearby city's bus station mall's small cinema. 18 years later, too nauseous for schoolwork and mooching off of my dad's Netflix account, I decided to rewatch this film. ***Spoiler alert for both book AND film*** The film itself is a staunch anti-war message, released around the same time as the invasion of Iraq, informed by Miyazaki's own childhood in the final years of Imperial Japan and the horrors inflicted on his home country to set the stage of the Cold War. The exposition includes a bombing of Sophie's hometown with...banners. The citizens of Ingary are terrified of the flying machines descending upon their skies, they expect bombs and destruction and untold death and unspeakable horrors. So when they instead get rained down paper pieces with pictures and words we are never privy to, they treat it with suspicion. They refuse to so much as touch them, since it's of the enemy. And the day after, when Ingary soldiers distribute their own country's propaganda banners, they drink it down without a second thought. Again, we are never privy to what they say. Perhaps it was meaningless. Perhaps, to the common contemporary viewer, the content would be incomprehensible. But for me, it got me thinking: What if this was the "enemy" spreading missing posters of their prince? What if this was a warning for the townspeople to evacuate, as they expect to take point there? And if it was, what the hell did it accomplish, outside of everything BUT what it tried to? The people are too scared. They see it as psychological warfare, whether intentional or not, and therefore the papers become a terrorizing presence, whether they were filled with graphic threats or pleas for cooperation, all it ended up doing is scaring the population into a deeper layer of hatred. I personally disagree with the film's apparent message, but I agree with how much of war is the matter of spinning the truth. No character represents a better allegory for spinning the truth than Sophie Hatter, the main character of the movie. The first thing we notice about her is how intricate and colorful all her creations are, while she sticks to a plain hat with minimal detail. We see her displeasure with her own appearance even when trying it on in front of the mirror. She dresses plainly for she thinks herself plain - wearing a mousy dress in both the source book and the film adaption. The book elaborates on this narrative and its subversion: In Ingary, fairytale tropes are accepted as divine truths. Sophie and her sister Lettie have had their mother die as toddlers, so when their father remarried and produced a third sister(briefly referenced in the film), Martha, Sophie and Lettie were doomed to be wicked, hideous stepsisters. But not only did their stepmother raised them as her own, but both all the Hatters were stated to be beautiful, with Lettie in particular having the entire town's male population vying for her affection in both book and film. In fact, the cunning one is the designated "Cinderella", Martha, who uses her guile to warn her half-sisters. See, another trope specific to Ingary was that the firstborn of three siblings will never find their luck - if they ever dare try, they will encounter disaster after misfortune and end up poor and miserable. According to Martha, her mother wanted to enjoy a life of luxury, so she sent Lettie to work in a bakery where she will surely find a man of her liking to start a life with, and shipped her own daughter off to be a magic apprentice far far away from her. Sophie is the only one she kept close, because she knew she buys into the tropes and will make her fortune for her, preferring the safety of her late father's shop to the dangers of the unlucky life of a firstborn. But in both film and book, this blissful avoidance of any exploration is torn away in a chance encounter Sophie has with the notorious wizard Howl. While her sister(s) are terrified for her safety, Sophie has no fear of the 'heart-eating monster' as "he only eats the hearts of beautiful girls", believing her plainness protected her. But oh, how she was wrong. Or was she? In both book and film, the Witch of the Wastes barges into the hat shop. In the book, she seeks Lettie whom Howl is taken with(like literally every man in town) and enters the shop where an overworked Sophie loses her temper at her, and mistaking the hatter for her sister, she curses the girl to become old. In the film, she's explicitly exacting revenge on Sophie, whom Howl is interested in, and follows her and invades her shop after closing time, cursing her to be ninety years old. This is supposed to devastate Sophie - rob her of her youth, beauty and health, ending her life before she started them. But in both versions, Sophie acclimates to the change rather well, constantly noticing the perks of living as an old lady - she can mumble to herself and be seen as normal, she can be assertive and commanding without being inappropriate and/or bossy, and since she has nothing to lose, she might as well go exploring the world, if only to lift the curse. To revisit this as someone who didn’t expect to have the option of growing old, this is an empowering message on its own - growing old is what you make of it. But despite subverting the Witch's narrative, Sophie remains a helpless victim of her own narrative. Book Sophie is explicitly said to be a powerful sorceress unaware of her own powers, even enchanting her hats into the client's shape with her words alone, while in the film it's only implied. But in both versions she Unconsciously Maintains Her Own Curse: She reverts to the eighteen year old in her sleep, or when something silences her insecurities enough. In the film, she's explicitly shown to de-age as she gains confidence in herself under the role of the household maid, going from the frail ninety-year-old into someone who looks and acts as a woman just past middle age - I don't think this is incidental, as many women are at their most confident at that age, when they no longer feel pressured to worry about trivial matters such as beauty and childrearing, and retreat back into the original cursed form when Howl calls her beautiful - a compliment she can never accept. In the book, Howl eventually comes to the conclusion that she likes being old and gives up trying to guide her out of it. The book takes narrative subversion even further. Remember cunning Martha? Turns out, the Hatters didn't conform to their mother's narrative either - Martha was bored by wizardry while Lettie craved it. The two concocted a plan to glamour as one another, which of course the mentor witch saw right though, and preferred Lettie's genuine interest to Martha ghosting the craft. This stings extra once Fanny is shown to be a caring mother who attacks who he thought cursed her stepdaughter - perhaps she fell for the same sort of thinking Sophie did, and wanted her stepdaughter to have the best life possible for someone doomed to fail, thought extroverted Lettie enjoyed the attention and choice of men and wanted Martha to be a powerful, self-sufficient young woman who led a life more glamorous than she did, as someone who lacked magic? That Fanny was a real parent - a well-intentioned woman who completely misjudged her children and their future? Is it possible Martha’s own narrative has poisoned her relationship with her mother, perhaps beyond repair? As for Sophie, in the book she breaks her own curse by breaking the contract between Calcifer and Howl. But the film gives it more nuance - Calcifer and Howl are clearly in a codependent relationship: In both versions Howl gave Calcifer his heart in exchange for magical powers (as well as saving the fallen star's life, depending on your interpretation of the character), but by the time Sophie employs herself at the Castle, Calcifer feels more like a slave than a powerful demon. Howl himself has his own internal struggles, and many online have made convincing cases for BPD being among them. Calcifer is an essential part of his support system. Each one of them believes that if Calcifer isn't fed properly, or gets dunked with water, they'll both die. And once Sophie does so to stop the wizened, depowered Witch of the Wastes from literally being consumed by her obsessive desire for Howl, she too believes to have killed them both with her rash actions. But they live, because Sophie's part in a time loop led her to think otherwise and refuse to give up on them. Within the film’s universe, this ties into Sophie’s innate magical powers talking reality into her perception. But I know real-life, ordinary people who’s own narratives have changed grim fates. Now, I don’t live in Ingary. I don’t believe the world around me has literal, reality-warping magic. I’m not a spiritual person. But this is precisely why Howl’s Moving Castle appealed to me - because the characters’ thoughts don’t perfectly dictate reality, but the way they act on their perceptions does. I know a man who is alive because his (now ex-)wife changed the narrative of his deathbed to one of optimism and efficacy. When I stopped trying to have my self-image reflected in the eyes of others, I transformed into a more confident, capable person practically overnight. I’m not delusional - I’m well aware of the Dunning-Krueger effect, of how reality exists whether you live in it or not. I’d like to think I live strictly within the boundaries of what is proven beyond reasonable doubt to be real.
But your spin on reality dictates your life. It can dictate parts of the lives of your close ones. But the message isn’t one of just changing your own view of a situation around you to become happy, oh no. Lettie and Martha didn’t just choose to be happy in apprenticeships they had no passion for. Sophie didn’t just relocate to some quaint cottage to live the few years that weren’t stolen from her as an old hermit. They acted to transform the existent reality within their means, but they could only do so because they felt empowered enough to question their life’s narratives.

“Secret Project” — Ikemen Prince Prologue
I talked about this the other day, but today I can finally announce that I've finished (ಥ﹏ಥ)
I've finished translating the prologue for Ikemen Prince!
It's been a few days since the game was released, but I still want to share some of my impressions with you before you guys plunge into the madness that is my translation ( ̄▽ ̄*)ゞ
Truth be told, I had mixed feelings about this game when I first heard about it. It honestly reminded me quite much about Midnight Cinderella (which I am not so fond of as I am of others) although the premise is different here. However, said premise is exactly what got me interested in the game. The basis for this game is the tale of The Beauty and the Beast; a very well-known one, I think. I was curious as to how they would include this into the story, but as of now it looks really promising („• ֊ •„)
The system is really similar to Ikemen Genjiden, so it is not too difficult if you already got used to it before (though it's definitely different from Ikemen Revolution and Ikemen Vampire.) For those who don't know Ikemen Genjiden's system yet: Don't worry, it is really not that hard to figure out!
The visuals are really great and fit the theme extremely well. As for the attire for each suitor, I think most of them are incredibly pretty! σ(≧ε≦σ) ♡
The three initial suitors are as expected Leon, Chevalier and Yves. I did think that Leon and Chevalier were obvious choices because they are the leaders of each faction ┐( ̄ヮ ̄)┌ and although I'm not too sure how Yves fits in there, I wasn't especially surprised about him being one of the first suitors.
Moreover, the prologue is fully voiced, which makes it a really worthwhile experience (* ̄▽ ̄)b
So, without any further ado, please enjoy Ikemen Prince's prologue! I hope many people will come to love this game (share some love with Ikemen Live and Ikemen Genjiden too, please) so that we'll see an English version in the future °˖✧◝(⁰▿⁰)◜✧˖°
(By the way, Emma is the preset name if you don't choose any other (.❛ ᴗ ❛.) Also, I apologize beforehand for any typos or formatting mistakes. It was... a lot of text (ಥ﹏ಥ))
Part 1 — A Tale That Started in a Bookstore
A sweet love like fluffy, melting cotton candy. A bitter love like black tea without sugar or milk. There are many types of love stories in this world. Every time I come in contact with those, I come to think that I don’t know true love. People my age fall in love, get married and build a happy family. The time when I dreamed of a serious love to the point of giving up myself might have already ended.
(But... still...)
Even today I still yearn for a love I would risk my entire life for.
Emma “... Haah, this book was great as well.”
During the day on a weekday, on the counter of the much less busy than usual bookstore, I gently closed the book.
(There aren’t even customers coming in... well, it’s troubling that they don’t come, but thanks to that I can read a lot of books.)
??? “Emma, did you finish reading?”
Emma “Woah!?”
Suddenly, because of the shadow that filled up my vision, I jumped back from my earlier thoughts.
Emma “Ri– Rio...?”
Rio “Sorry for surprising you. I came to see you today, too.”
Emma “Welcome, Rio. But... shouldn’t you be at work at this time?”
Rio “Ah, I quit the day before yesterday.”
Emma “Huh, so it’s like—... you quit!?”
Rio “That’s right. That’s why I’m in the middle of searching for a highly praised job!”
Emma “Is... is that so... again...”
Because I felt like we had the same conversation just a few months ago, as his friend I got a little worried.
(He’s skillful with his hands, sociable and he has a bit of a clumsy side to him, but he’s still liked by everyone...)
Emma “Why did you quit work?”
Rio “Of course, because I am yours.”
Emma “Excuse me?”
Rio “Because, since you saved me that day, my body and my heart, I will devote everything to you.” “I can’t serve other people.”
Emma “Aaah, yes... in other words, your reason is a secret.”
The sight from the rainy day three years ago when I had picked up the collapsed and nearly dying Rio crossed my mind.
(I always thought so, but it feels like a big dog became attached to me.)
Rio “I’m always serious, okay! By the way, is the owner in?” “I wanted to talk to him in person today because I want to work here with you...”
Emma “He went out to some distant place to go shopping, so I think he won’t return for some time.”
Rio “No way...!”
I was about to tell him to give up— but seeing that Rio looked dejected like a dog with its ears down, I swallowed the words.
Emma “... You may not be able to talk to him directly, but how about asking the owner with a letter next time?”
Rio “Can I!?”
Emma “Sure. There’s also physical work to do in a bookstore, so it would be reassuring to have you here.”
Rio “Thanks, Emma. From now on I will call you Master, okay?”
Emma “No, don’t—”
Surprised by the noise that came without warning, I quickly covered my stomach.
Emma “Did... Did you hear that?”
Rio “Of course! But rest assured. I know you very well, you know.”
Smiling proudly Rio walks up to a cart.
(A cart? Since when has that been here!?)
Rio “I thought this might happen, so— ta-dah!”
The sheet on top of the cart was removed and what came to light was a mountain of food.
Emma “Wow, amazing!”
Candied fruits, truffles with a lot of cheese, rose-shaped baked sweets and apple benier— On that cart were a lot of foods that you often see at festivals.
Rio “This also doubles as my lunch, but I was in a bit of trouble since I bought too much.” “I’d be happy if you eat to your heart’s content.”
Emma “Really? Well then, thanks for the food!”
When I put the baked confectionery into my mouth, I couldn’t help but smile.
Emma “Mmh, this is so good!” “Come to think of it, wasn’t there a festival going on outside?”
Rio “Yeah. Remember, today is the National Foundation Day of the Rhodolite Kingdom!”
Part 2 — Festival of the Rose Country
Emma “Come to think of it, wasn’t there a festival going on outside?”
Rio “Yeah. Remember, today is the National Foundation Day of the Rhodolite Kingdom!” “This year, there are a lot of street stalls as well.”
Emma “I see. Were there any notable booths?”
Rio, while chewing on an apple benier, clapped his hands as he remembered.
Rio “I remember now. There was a stand with old books!”
Emma “What, really?”
Rio “Yeah, isn’t there a traveling merchant who sells books once in a while?”
(That sounds interesting... I’m REALLY interested, but I need to watch the shop...)
Rio “Off you go.”
Emma “Huh...?”
Rio “I’ll watch the shop for you.”
Emma “Are you sure?”
Rio “Whom do you take me for? I’m your future husband after all.”
Emma “... you’ve gotten that wrong, but thanks anyway, Rio!”
Rio “If you want to thank me, then a hug—”
Emma “You can get a handshake.”
I held his big hand tight, shaking it up and down and then released it.
Emma “Okay, I’m off then! You can look forward to a souvenir!”
Rio “All right!” “She’s so cute... I really hope she doesn’t get caught by some bad guys.”
The moment I left the shop, I felt like I heard Rio whisper that.
Street Vendor 1 “If it isn’t Emma! Take this rose-shaped hair ornament to commemorate the National Foundation Day.”
Emma “Wow, that’s lovely! Thank you.”
Street vendor 2 “I also recommend our rose-shaped brooches! It will surely suit you, so I’ll give you one as a present.”
Emma “Really? Thank you so much!”
I carefully put the rose-shaped works on top of the several volumes of books I bought from the traveling merchant just before. When I thanked the generous stall owners and started walking again, banners engraved with “Rhodolite Kingdom—Country of Roses” hung from the buildings along the street flitted.
(Country of Roses... That’s indeed true.)
The flowers that bloomed in the city, the products lined up at the street stalls, and even the castle one could see in the distance were all packed with roses. When I took a deep breath, a mellow scent filling up my chest, the familiar sensation made me smile.
(Okay, let’s see. I bought the books and next I need to get a souvenir for Rio...)
??? “Don’t ya watch where ya goin’? Ya shitty brat!!”
Emma “... what?”
To the dangerous voice that stood in contrast to the beautiful city, not only me but also the people around me stopped their feet. In the middle of the turmoil were a red-faced man and a boy who was sitting on the ground.
Little Boy “Waaah... sob...”
Drunkard “How ‘bout ya beg for forgiveness for crashin’ into me? Hah!?”
(... No, you don’t!)
Because of the highly raised hand, I stepped in between the drunkard and the boy without hesitation.
Drunkard “What do ya want...?”
Emma “What do you think you are doing, raising a hand against a small child like him!?”
Drunkard “Shuddup! That’s got nothin’ to do with ya!”
The clenched fist that had stopped before was now swinging down at me. When I tried to promptly shield myself, the books fell to the ground—
(Huh...?) (It doesn’t hurt?)
??? “That’s as far as you go.”
When I timidly opened my eyes... A man who had stood behind the drunkard before he knew it, strongly held on to the hand reeking of liquor.
Black-haired Man “If you kick up a fuss, I’ll be your opponent... So, how about it?”
Part 3 — Beast and Beast
Black-haired Man “If you kick up a fuss, I’ll be your opponent... So, how about it?”
Emma “Uh...”
We as well as the curious onlookers were swallowed by his unique aura and as if the tumult had been a lie, it grew silent again.
(... What a presence that person has...)
If I had to compare, the feeling of tension around him was the same as if the King of Beasts had escaped from its cage and suddenly appeared in the city. It should have been clear to everyone that this person wasn’t someone you should pick a fight with... Just as the man smiled daringly, the drunkard shook off his hand with a click of his tongue.
Drunkard “Then, why don’t ya bring it on!”
Black-haired Man “Heh, how lively.”
Emma “Please wait! A peaceful solution would—”
Drunkard “Be quiet!”
(No!)
The drunkard loudly kicked a book that was scattered on the ground. The book drew a perfect arc and, just like that, landed in the middle of the road— As if to block the path of a white horse that walked over.
??? “Oh...?”
The man riding on the white horse looked down at the book and then shot the drunkard a piercing glance.
(This person... he has an extraordinary aura as well...)
??? “Are you that impertinent miscreant?”
His sharp, freezing gaze glinted with a cruel light, just like a tiger fixating on its prey. If you happened to make even the littlest mistake, you would lose your short-lived life in that exact moment. It was that kind of tension that made your throat dry up.
(... Hmm? The coat of arms on his saddle...) (Don’t tell me he belongs to the Royal Family!?)
Drunkard “Hah!? Bastard, don’t go lookin’ down on me!”
As if to threaten the drunkard who trampled down on the book, the man from the Royal Family sharpened his look even further.
Male from the Royal Family “I did not plan to take part in such vulgar performance, but is this also a part of the festival’s entertainment?”
Emma “... eh!?”
The royal man drew the sword hanging from his waist—
(It can’t be, he’s planning to kill him!?)
My body moved without me realizing.
Emma “Cut it out already!”
Drunkard “Wah!?”
Before one could see the whole of the sword’s blade, my palm struck the drunkard’s cheek with all the strength I had. The black-haired man and the member of the Royal Family both stared at me in silent disbelief.
Drunkard “Wha—What the heck was that for!”
Emma “Calm down, will you! Or do you really want to be killed!?”
Drunkard “... kill—you mean—...”
When I silently pointed towards the coat of arms on the horse’s saddle, his deep red face turned deathly pale. Taking in the situation, I decisively turned in the direction the man on the horse.
Emma “I sincerely apologize for the trouble! If you can, please excuse what happened just now.”
Although I waited for a response, the man from the Royal Family kept quiet.
Black-haired Man “... ahahaha!”
What broke the tension of this life and death situation was a refreshing laughter.
Black-haired Man “Rest assured. That guy’s not someone who would kill people because of something like this.”
Emma “Eh...?”
Male from the Royal Family “... You have awoken my interest.”
??? “Chevalier, are you done playing?”
A man riding a chestnut horse lined up next to the white one and shrugged his shoulder as if he did that on purpose.
Chevalier “Yes. It was a waste of time.”
(Are we safe...?)
Just when I felt relieved, the sharp, tiger-like gaze was cast on the book still scattered on the ground.
Chevalier “Do these books belong to you?”
Emma “Eh, yes...”
He intently stared at the book on the ground.
(I wonder what’s with him... He’s staring really hard...)
When the man named Chevalier shifted his gaze from the book to myself, the man next to him cheerfully opened his mouth.
??? “What, this time you are hitting on someone?”
Chevalier “There is no merit in wooing a woman...”
Emma “Eh!?”
His sword was drawn in a flowing motion and the tip was thrust at my throat.
(Just... why?)
While swallowing a gasp at the sudden action, he scooped up my jaw with the flat of the blade.
Chevalier “These books, however, are different. Contrary to your body, they have value. You’d do well to remember that.”
(... It’s so painful to breathe...)
My voice wouldn’t come out no matter what—so when I managed to nod, the man returned his sword to its sheath and took hold of the horse’s reins.
(... What a terribly scary person...)
As if chasing after the white horse that stepped forward, the chestnut horse next to it started to move as well. Upon leaving, its rider gave me an amused look but left without saying a word. The moment the tension dissipated breathing, which had been so painful before, became easier again.
(I was wondering how this would end, but... I’m glad that nothing serious happened.)
With a sidelong glance towards the helpless drunkard who sat down, I faced the black-haired man after a short pause.
Emma “Thank you so much for helping me—what should I call you, Mister...?”
Leon “My name is Leon. And you don’t have to be so formal.”
Emma “Thanks then, Leon. Say, are you acquainted with the member of the Royal Family from earlier?”
Leon “Yeah, but it’s not like we ever talked that much.”
Leon picked up the books and rose-shaped decorations that were scattered on the ground in front of me.
Leon “Here you go.”
Emma “Thank you.”
(It seems neither the books nor the ornaments are damaged.)
Leon “You really love books, don’t you.”
Emma “Yes, because the stories are more interesting than reality. But more importantly...”
As I kneeled down beside the child who wiped his eyes while sobbing, Leon also lined up next to him.
Leon “Did you stop crying, shortie?”
Little Boy “Sniffle... Mama...”
Leon “So you’re lost... Then, come with me.”
Little Boy “... You’ll... bring me to Mama?”
Leon “Yeah, I’ll look for her for you.”
Leon lifted his small body with ease.
(Somehow, he seems like a totally different person than before.)
The beast-like tension around him had vanished and instead he was wrapped up in a friendly atmosphere.
Little Boy “Um, big sis... thanks for saving me.”
Emma “It was nothing. I’m just glad that you’re not hurt.”
Leon “The same goes for you. So, should we go?”
Emma “Wait, I’ll also—’
Before I could even offer to help out with searching for the boy’s mother, Leon briskly walked away while waving his hand.
(At first I thought he would be scary, but... I guess he is a nice guy after all.) (If we happen to meet once more, I have to thank him again.)
Turning my back towards the castle, visible in the distance, I once again walked through the city, where the hustle and bustle started to return.
—... at the same time.
??? “I found you at last.”
Part 4 — The Devil’s Summon
??? “I found you at last.”
A devilish smile played on the lips of the shadow hiding in a back alley.
??? “It seems training her will be worthwhile... hehehe.”
Without noticing the shadow moving about in unknown places... By the time the sky was dyed red, I finally arrived at the front of the bookstore.
(Finding a souvenir took more time than I expected. I hope Rio isn’t angry with me.)
When I opened the door while thinking of how to apologize to Rio—
??? “Welcome back, Emma.”
The person inside, sitting on the counter with his legs crossed, wasn’t Rio but a man I never saw before. I stared at him without responding to his greeting. The man simply smiled back at me. I closed the door to cut off the sinister aura I felt on my skin.
(... Just now, wasn’t there a devil-like person inside?) (No, it might have been my imagination. There’s no way there could be a devil after all.) (I’m certain I just mistook Rio for somebody else... At least I hope so.)
I took a deep breath and opened the door once more— A man with a devilish smile stood right before my eyes.
Devil-like Man “That is an extraordinary greeting, don’t you think?”
Emma “.... Mmnnh!”
The very moment I turned on my heels and tried to escape, an arm was put around my waist and my mouth was blocked.
(Why, what’s happening!?)
Devil-like Man “Please keep quiet. Otherwise, I can’t allow you to breathe.”
His words shocked me to the point I became speechless.
Devil-like Man “Due to certain circumstances I have come to pick you up.”
With a snap of the fingers of the man clad in black, multiple men surrounded me.
(Wait! Those clothes... aren’t those guards from the castle!?)
Devil-like Man “For the time being, I will take you with me.”
Emma “Mnnh!!!”
(Wait a minute, wait! What did I do...!?)
Without understanding anything, I was taken to a carriage that stopped outside—
(Wha—...)
Before I knew what was happening, the place I had been taken to was the front of the majestic castle I had only seen from a distance.
(How beautiful...) (Wait, it’s not the time for that! Why was I brought to such a place!?)
In a daze, I looked up at the castle that was so big that its tip seemed to reach up farther than the clouds, when—
??? “Hey, you are in the way.”
The surprise shook me out of my daze. I lowered my gaze when someone tapped my shoulder. What I saw there were two men dressed in gorgeous outfits.
??? “Heh, your looks aren’t half bad. Yvie, do you know her?”
Yves “I absolutely do not know any ordinary women like her. Are you sure it isn’t a woman you dumped in the past, Nokto?”
(Who are they?)
Part 5 — Eight Wild Beasts
??? “Heh, your looks aren’t half bad. Yvie, do you know her?”
Yves “I absolutely don’t know any ordinary women like her. Are you sure it isn’t a woman you dumped in the past, Nokto?”
(Who are they?)
Because of the scrutinizing gaze of the two people who drew closer, I subconsciously stepped back.
Nokto “Huh, you are really on guard... I wonder if the cause of that is because you were dumped in the past.”
Yves “Hah? So she really is a woman you threw away in the past? You really are the worst, you frivolous womanizer.”
Emma “Um... You guys, just who on earth—...“
When I cut into the seemingly uncontrollable conversation, the man called Yves exaggeratedly opened his eyes.
Yves “... Don’t tell me, you don’t know who we are?”
Emma “At the very least, it’s not like we are acquainted...”
Nokto “What, so she wasn’t my woman after all.”
Yves “I don’t care about that! Not knowing who I am is something that shouldn’t happen on any terms!”
(Woah, what the—!?)
With a bloodcurdling look Yves reached out to me. And as if to block that, a black shadow lithely fluttered about.
Devil-like Man “Your Royal Highnesses, Prince Nokto and Prince Yves, I will introduce you later.”
Nokto “So you are here. Is that girl a guest?”
Devil-like Man “That is correct. After knowing this, if you aren’t a fool, please take a guess as to what reason you are gathered for.”
Yves “... ah.”
Nokto “What, so it’s like that.”
(... What is it?)
Devil-like Man “If you understand, then please make haste towards the round table.”
Nokto “Sure, sure. I got it.”
Nokto waved his hand as he passed way too close next to me. The moment I breathed in relief, my hand was grabbed from behind.
Nokto “I’ll play with you next time, okay?”
Emma “P-Play...?”
Snickering with a seductive smile engraved on his lips, this time around Nokto really left.
(... He seems to be an incredibly flippant person.)
Yves, on the other hand, pointed his index finger at me when his eyes met mine.
Yves “I will never ever in my life recognize such a mediocre person as Belle!”
Emma “‘Belle’?”
Turning away like a cat with a ‘hmph’ of disapproval, Yves also entered the castle.
(Just where did I hear the name ‘Belle’ before? I can’t quite remember...)
Devil-like Man “Well then, Emma. Please don’t dawdle about, we will go as well.”
Emma “Wah, wait a minute...!”
The man grabbed my hand and, as if chasing the other two, we advanced into the castle. After passing through a massive door, we found ourselves in a stairwell-like hall.
(Wow, this looks as if I got lost in a picture book...)
The roses that were in full bloom and the decorations as well... Whichever you chose, it had reached the level of fine arts. For commoners it was a sight far beyond their ability that left one dizzy.
(I’m so obviously sticking out like a sore thumb.)
When my feet stopped due to the uneasiness, a suspicious look entwined me like a snake.
Devil-like Man “Oh dear, is this an expression of insubordination?”
Emma “This isn’t defiance or anything... But isn’t it time you started explaining? Who exactly are you?”
Devil-like Man “Yes... Now that you mention it, I haven’t formally introduced myself yet.”
Easier than I expected, the man released my hand while smiling calmly.
Sariel “I am called Sariel. My occupation is Government Official of the Royal Court.”
Emma “Government Official... of the Royal Court?”
Sariel “You may have been alarmed, but please rest assured. I will train you to become emotionally attached to me.”
(Train me...!?)
It seemed that rather than calling him with the imposing title of Government Official of the Royal Court, labeling him as a mysterious devil fitted him more.
Emma “Before I’m being trained, I’d like to go home, though...”
Sariel “Then that means you give up on living, right?”
He spoke with a devilish smile, as if it didn’t matter whatever I said.
Emma “... There is one thing I need to know. Rio, the one who should have been at the store,... He is safe, right?”
Sariel “Yes, of course. If you would kindly listen to what I say, I will guarantee his life at least.”
(In any case, it seems I can only obediently obey him.)
Emma “... I understand.”
When I nodded, Sariel who had brought his face closer, put the hair covering my cheek behind my ear—
Sariel “Hehehe, I cannot wait to make such a defiant person surrender.”
(... I can’t believe someone like that is a Government Official of the Royal Court...)
Unconsciously glaring back at him, Sariel gave me an amused smile and started walking again. This time, I followed the black-clothed back of my own volition.
Sariel “Now then, we have arrived.”
When the two guards standing in front of the room opened the double door— The atmosphere changed.
(What... Is this...?)
Eight men were surrounding the enshrined round table in the center of the spacious room. Just as footsteps resounded in the room, their gazes pierced me all at once. I felt so overwhelmed at the sudden unwanted attention that it left me speechless. With eight sharp glares directed at me, I stood stock still like a small animal before a beast.
(Those people are...)
Under those ferocious and wild, yet noble gazes... Were the people I met in front of the castle a moment ago, As well as the ones I saw back in town... And then...
Leon “Heh, who’d have thought we meet again.”
Emma “No way, Leon!?”
Part 6 — What the Princes Talk About
Leon “Heh, who’d have thought we meet again.”
Emma “No way, Leon!?”
(What... Is the meaning of this?)
Leon, whom I had thought to have the same simple tastes as the townspeople only a few hours ago, was now wearing refined clothes and loftily included in the group at the round table.
Sariel “You must not do that, Emma. You cannot talk in that way when you speak to the princes.”
Leon “Don’t worry. I already told you that you don’t need to be so formal.”
Emma “Leon, you are a prince?”
Leon “Yeah. All the guys here, without exception, are princes.”
(I really... Want this to be a dream...)
My body, which was unexpectedly about to collapse, was supported from behind where Sariel was. But what I felt from the hand that grasped my shoulder wasn’t kindness but rather an additional blow that said, ‘There is no place for you to run.’
Sariel "Your Highnesses, thank you very much for gathering here." “From now on, as I conveyed the other day, we will hold the approval ceremony of the ‘Belle-System.’
(‘Belle-System’? ‘Approval ceremony’...?)
Sariel “To begin with, this girl is called Emma.” “Since this is your first time meeting each other, would you please introduce yourselves starting with His Highness, Prince Luke?”
Luke “Too troublesome.”
Sariel “Your Highness.”
Luke “It’s fine, if I just do it, right?”
The man who was sitting closest to me listlessly opened his mouth.
Luke “Luke Randolph. I’m the seventh... no, more like eighth prince.”
Nokto “I’m seventh in line, Nokto Klein. You can always come over to my room, okay?” “And over here is my twin brother—“
Licht “Sixth, Licht Klein.”
Yves “The fifth prince, Yves Kloss. I have no choice but to tell you my name. Don’t address me casually, though.”
Jin “I’m Jin Grandet. I’m the eldest brother of these guys, so that makes me the first prince.” “I’m sure it will be hard with all those problem children, but, well, keep them company in moderation.”
Clavis “I am the third in line, Clavis Lelouch. You can call me Clavis.” “The show earlier was quite entertaining. Don’t you think so as well, Cheva?”
Chevalier “Nonsense.” “However, I will teach you my name considering that you escaped harm with that courageous display. Chevalier Michel, second prince.”
Leon “So I’m the last one.” “Leon Dompteur. I’m this country’s fourth prince. Again, nice to meet you, Emma.”
Emma “Uh, yeah. Nice to meet you.” “Although I was called here... I don’t completely understand the situation. What is this ‘Belle-System’ in the first place?”
Yves “Huh? You didn’t even know that and still shamelessly came to the castle?”
Emma “I was downright kidnapped, thank you very much!”
Luke “Sariel, did you really kidnap her?”
Sariel “Please refrain from saying anything that would harm my reputation. I acted upon consent.”
Emma “Upon consent—?”
Sariel “You agreed, did you not?”
My meager resistance was ruthlessly cut off and I swallowed my words.
Sariel “Since long ago, the chosen citizen of this nation is to select the next king in our Rhodolite Kingdom—“ “That is your duty by becoming ‘Belle’.”
(Ah, I remember now.)
Emma “If I remember right, the name Belle means ‘a person with a beautiful heart’, right?”
Sariel “Yes, that is correct.”
(I totally forgot that since the king is replaced only every few decades.) (... wait.)
Emma “Are you telling me... that I am that Belle?”
Sariel “Haven’t I said that since before?” “I want you to select the new king out of these eight princes.”
Part 7 — Belle
Sariel “I want you to select the new king out of these eight princes.”
(Choose the king? ME!?)
That crazy story was a shock like receiving a heavy blow to the head.
Emma “Why, why me? Deciding who will be king is a serious matter for a country!”
Jin “That’s what I want to ask as well. What made you choose her, Sariel?”
Sariel “The slap she performed.”
Jin “... Haha, so that’s it.”
(With slap he can’t mean...)
Emma “Sariel, you also were at the festival venue?”
Sariel “How perceptive. I was searching the town high and low in order to find a candidate for Belle...” “But when you hit that scoundrel in His Highness Prince Chevalier’s stead right away, I was charmed by that ability.”
Emma “At–, at that time, I just desperately...”
Sariel “For humans, the more desperate we are, the more we bare our true nature.” “Your excellent ability to assess the situation and your decisiveness, as well as not to forsake the scoundrel, and your just and beautiful heart—“ “You are undoubtedly a person of exceptional talent fitting to receive the title of ‘Belle’.”
(Oh, no. No, no, just no.)
Sariel looked satisfied, but I, on the other hand, felt my uneasiness grow rapidly.
Sariel “Catching me eye is something to take pride in for generations.”
Emma “Um, I’m very grateful for what you’re saying, but accepting such an important task like being ‘Belle’ isn’t—“
Nokto “If you refuse, Sariel’s gonna cry, you know?”
Clavis “I think I really want to see that, but... There’s certainly no time for that.”
Emma “What do you mean?”
Clavis “Seeing that His Majesty the King has suddenly departed, it is necessary to quickly decide on a new king, don’t you agree?”
Emma “Suddenly means... the king has passed away!?”
Sariel “Your Highness... Wasn’t this information supposed to be concealed from the public for the time being?”
Clavis “Oops, seems I was a bit careless there. It’s fine if you cry, Sariel.”
Sariel “... Tsk.”
(Did he just click his tongue at a prince!?)
Sariel “Hehe, the inherent nature has shown itself.”
Emma “... Why are you hiding such an important thing from the public?”
Even though Sariel was carrying a sour look on his face, he took a deep breath as if he was resigning. So, he pointed his gaze towards the map hanging on the wall.
Sariel “The Rhodolite Kingdom is a small kingdom that is surrounded on all sides by three other countries.” “We have built comparatively good relationships with our ally, the country of Benitoite, and the neutral country of Jade.” “However, the great country of Obsidian alone is vigilantly eyeing our Rhodolite Kingdom for an opportunity to aim at our territory.” “I presume you have knowledge about that much?”
Emma “I do...”
Sariel “If the news about our King’s passing were to spread before our kingdom’s structure is stabilized, it is very much possible that they would take advantage of the disorder to invade our country.”
Hearing Sariel say something like that had me speechless with horror.
Sariel “When His Majesty the King actually became ill, the Obsidian, who had gotten wind of the information from somewhere, invaded the border.” “That led to the situation where the princes of our country proceeded towards the battlefield themselves to drive them away.” “Do you understand what that means?”
(Thinking about it calmly, of course I do.)
In this time when even the princes rush to the battlefield as soldiers—the weight of knowing such a secret made me break out in cold sweat.
Emma “... I won’t tell anyone about His Majesty’s passing.”
Sariel “I fear simply promising that will not be enough. There is one more thing I want to hear.”
Emma “... That’s...”
Sariel “Just as His Highness Prince Clavis has said, we need to immediately choose a new king.” “Right now, your existence is already affecting the life or death of our country.” “You will accept the position of ’Belle”, will you not?”
Emma “I do understand the circumstances, but as expected I’m not suited to—“
Sariel “Well then, Your Highnesses, Prince Leon and Prince Chevalier, if you approve of her as ‘Belle’ then please raise your hands.”
(You just ignore what I said!?)
Chevalier raised his hand before anyone else.
Nokto “Oh, how fast, Your Highness.”
Luke “Is it okay for a leader to be so half-minded?”
Chevalier “Naturally, since it doesn’t concern me who will become Belle.”
Emma “What does he mean, ‘leader’?”
Sariel “The princes are divided into two major factions, centered on Prince Leon and Prince Chevalier.” “His Highness Prince Leon’s faction who value domestic affairs and His Highness Prince Chevalier’s faction who value foreign affairs. That is about all it amounts to, I guess.” “Since the consensus of each of the princes is polarized, the resolution is often entrusted to Prince Leon and Prince Chevalier.”
(I see... So that’s why he asked the two of them right now.) (No, more importantly—)
Without regard for my opinion, Sariel continued to talk.
Sariel “What about you, Prince Leon?”
Everyone’s eyes gathered at him.
Leon “Emma, let’s hear what you intend to do.”
Part 8 — A Tale Yet to be Seen
Leon “Emma, let’s hear what you intend to do.”
Emma “I want...”
When I tried to say that it would be impossible, just as I had said many times before... My words were absorbed by Leon’s ascertaining eyes.
Leon “I think you have the capability to determine the next king.”
Emma “... That’s not true. I mean, there’s nothing special about me. I’m just a commoner.”
Leon “All of the former ‘Belle’s’ have been commoners.”
Emma “No way...”
Leon “Why do you think does something like the ‘Belle-System’ exist in the first place?”
Emma “... I don’t know.”
When I answered honestly, Leon raised the edges of his mouth.
Leon “Then, do you know what the people from the Royal Family are called out on the streets?”
(That, of course I know.)
Emma “—‘Noble beasts’, right?”
Leon “Yeah. A long time ago, the people of this nation assessed the inhumane royals who struggled for power all the time as ‘beasts’. But since then, those who inherited the blood of the Royal Family have come to be called ‘noble beasts’.”
(I remember that as a kid, I once thought that the members of the Royal Family were all densely covered in thick hair.)
Emma “But that is just an old story, isn’t it?”
Leon “No, every single one of the guys present is a beast who only holds the desire to act in his self-interest.” “Devouring people for their ambitions and ideals... Even that was probably done without batting a damn eyelid.”
(Saying they devoured people feels like a bit too much...)
That was what I thought, but the eyes of the princes were too fierce to just laugh it off.
Leon “In fact, we princes are sometimes referred to as ‘beasts’ when slaughtering enemies on the battlefield.” “Do you think the guys in front of you can still turn into good boys, though?”
In that moment, I didn’t know how to answer his question.
(I still don’t know anything about them. And each of these guys might seem like a beast on the surface.)
Leon “That’s why we need a ‘Belle’.” “So that we can turn from beast to human through the example of someone from among the citizens with a particularly beautiful heart.” “Moreover, only a human with a pure and righteous heart can choose a ‘man’ and not a beast as the king, don’t you think?”
Emma “Although that may be true, I don’t have such a noble heart.”
Sariel “Oh my, am I right to assume you don’t trust my word?”
Emma “No way, I wouldn’t dare...!”
Sariel “Of course you would not, right? You are, after all, ‘Belle’ who owns a pure, righteous, and beautiful heart. My word is absolute.”
(He’s so pushy...)
Leon “The rest is up to you. If you really don’t want to, then I’m willing to push this matter aside...” “However, you said you love stories, right?”
Emma “... Well, I did say that, but...”
For some reason, Leon grinned at me as if he was sure of his victory.
Leon “Doesn’t choosing a king seem like a much more interesting story than the ones in books?”
(When he says it like that...)
Leon “Furthermore, you are the story’s protagonist. Such an opportunity doesn’t come often, does it?”
(... Leon’s really cunning, phrasing his words like that.)
The age where I wished for something fierce like a fictional story was long past. But in truth... While the people around me are changing, I am the only one who remains unchanged. I was always desperately wishing for something that would rewrite my ordinary life.
(I have a lot of insecurities and the responsibility is heavy. I know I can’t do this with half-hearted feelings.) (Still... Something may change.)
The thought of a yet-unseen tale made my heart beat faster and my body get hot.
Leon “What will you do, Emma?”
(What I want to do is...)
As not to lose the resolution I gathered, I clasped my hands tightly—
Emma “... I want to do it.”
When I told him my unadorned feelings in those few words, Leon directly raised his hand.
Sariel “With that, it is decided I presume.”
Without letting the atmosphere linger, Chevalier briskly left his seat.
Leon “You’re going already?”
Chevalier “Our business is over.”
Clavis “Wouldn’t it be better to flatter Belle a bit?”
Chevalier “That’s just a waste of my time.” “It doesn’t matter who Belle chooses. It won’t change the fact that I will become the future king.”
His words had me so baffled that the only thing that left my mouth was a startled sound. Chevalier’s ice-cold gaze that seemed to freeze everything it touched caught me.
Chevalier “If you get in my way, I will dispose of you. That is what I plan to do.”
His cruel words left me speechless. Similar to the time when he thrust his sword at my throat, just his gaze made it painful to breathe.
(This person... He is terrifying.)
Clavis, who followed after the leaving Chevalier, tapped my shoulder as he passed me.
Clavis “I’m sorry for Cheva’s behavior.” “Well, I don’t have interest in the throne, but I like amusing things. Please entertain me with your way of life, okay little girl?”
While I was captivated by his brilliant smile, the footsteps of those two grew distant and they disappeared behind the door.
Sariel “Really now, it seems that I haven’t disciplined them enough.”
Next to Sariel, who sighed deeply, this time a hand was raised, waving.
Nokto “Hey, Sariel. Got a question.”
Sariel “Please go ahead and ask, Your Highness.”
Nokto “Belle choosing a king means, to put it bluntly, the guy who wins this girl over is going to become the king, right?”
Sariel “Plainly spoken, that is what will happen.”
Obtaining Sariel’s consent, Nokto turned his face to me—
Nokto “Well, since I’ll seduce you, let’s get along, okay?”
(He’s going to do what!?)
Part 9 — The King and the Rose
Nokto “Well, since I’ll seduce you, let’s get along, okay?”
(He’s going to do what!?)
Emma “That would be troub—“
Sariel “You are truly quick to understand, Your Highness.”
Yves “Ugh, I can’t listen to this anymore!” “To seduce her... Nokto, as a prince, aren’t you lacking pride and self-awareness?”
Nokto “If that’s what you think, don’t interfere. Got it, Yvie?”
Yves “Why would I have to listen to what you say?”
Ignoring me, Sariel and the princes continued talking.
Jin “What, even Yves ended up wanting to seduce her? You’re quite a busy one, aren’t you?”
Yves “Even if she is a commoner, for the time being she is Belle. She is necessary for me to be deemed as worthy of the throne.”
Emma “Then pick a different way to be acknowledged!”
Jin “Ooh, that’s an extremely respectable opinion.”
Luke “How should I put it, you should stop it soon. Don’t you see you’re troubling her?”
As Luke stood up from his seat, the others became quiet.
Luke “Emma... was it, right? If something happens, you can rely on me.”
Emma “Thank you very much, Your Highness.”
Luke “Stop that. Just Luke is fine and you don’t have to be polite.”
Emma “But...”
Luke “You’re addressing Leon familiarly as well, aren’t you? Drop the title with me, too. I don’t like it anyway.”
Emma “... Okay, then I’ll call you Luke.”
Luke “Good.”
Yves “Wait a minute! Didn’t you end up seducing her as well!?”
Jin “No, you got that wrong. That’s just how Luke’s natural character is. You guys as well, do the best you can.”
Jin took a lollipop out of his breast pocket and put it in his mouth.
Leon “Jin, do you think this is other people’s business?”
Jin “Yeah. Because I don’t give a shit about something like ascending to the throne.”
(Give a shit, he said...)
Nokto “I’m fine with whatever, so as a sign of our acquaintanceship, just call me Nokto, okay?”
Yves “I won’t allow that, understood? Make sure to address me with my title.”
Jin “Well, I dislike all that formal phrasing. Call me whatever you like.”
Emma “Then, I will call you Nokto, Yves and Jin.”
Yves “... Hey, are you even listening to what people are saying?”
Licht “... So stupid.”
(... What’s with him?)
Licht, who had only barely opened his mouth other than for the self-introduction, stood up.
Yves “Licht! Don’t always say things that push people away. Do you want your friends to leave?”
Licht “There weren’t any from the start. And I don’t need any.”
Yves “Because you’re again trying to be alone immediately—“ “Ah, wait, Licht! Where are you going!?”
Licht “Returning to my room.”
Nokto “Licht... You don’t have any interest in the throne?”
Licht “... No need to answer.”
Casting down his eyes, Licht left the room just like that.
(Somehow... He seems like someone who is hard to talk to.)
Yves “Really now, that guy...”
Emma “Wanting to be the king, not wanting to be the king... You really have various opinions, don’t you?”
Leon “Even though we are all half-brothers, our thoughts and everything else differ.”
Emma “By the way, what about you, Leon?”
Grinning, he returned a smile that said more than words could.
Leon “Determine with your own eyes whether I’m capable of becoming the king, okay?”
Emma “... All right.”
When I nodded in agreement, the sound of hands clapping quieted the place.
Sariel “I apologize for saying this during your pleasant talk. However, since there is a place I wish to show her, let’s end this meeting here.”
With Sariel leading the way, we walked into a room even more gorgeous than the one with the round table.
(This... It must be the audience hall.) (What to do...? I’ve come to an incredible place.)
What I saw at the end of the red carpet were only the throne and... In addition to that, a rose inside a glass dome.
Emma “What is that rose for?”
Sariel “For generations, on the occasion of His Majesty the King finding his demise, it has become the custom to prepare a rose.” “The rule is that the next king has to be determined by the time all of its petals have fallen.”
Emma “So there is a time limit.”
Sariel “Indeed. This rose is a special breed which continues to bloom for approximately one month.”
(One month... Within that period a new king has to be determined.)
Sariel stopped his feet near the throne and looked back at me.
Sariel “Other than that, all of the terms and conditions concerning the Belle-System are recorded in this covenant.”
(Sorry?)
With a snap of his fingers, the guards who briskly appeared, carrying a table made from oak trees and several sheets of paper completely covered with unusually small letters.
Emma “You’re not seriously telling me I have to read all this, right?”
Sariel “You are asking me something so blatantly obvious?”
(Your true nature again!?)
Sariel “If you have looked over all of this, please sign the covenant.”
Emma “You are sure saying some devilish things.”
Sariel “Because it is necessary. Once you have signed, I will guide you to your room.”
Emma “Okay... Wait, what?”
Sariel “What is the matter?”
Part 10 — Beauty and the Beast’s Covenant
Sariel “Once you have signed, I will guide you to your room.”
Emma “Okay... Wait, what?”
Sariel “What is the matter?”
Emma “Sariel, did you just say you will guide me to a room?”
Sariel “That is what I said.”
Emma “MY room?”
Sariel “Where else would I take you?”
Emma “To my home back in the town, perhaps?”
Sariel “A room for you has been prepared by the Royal Court.” “Because until the one who was selected as Belle has finished their duty, they are to live inside the castle.”
(That can’t be—)
My face grew pale at those unhesitatingly uttered words.
Emma “But that is troubling! What will become of the shop!?”
Sariel “I have already contacted the owner and arranged for a temporary employee.”
Emma “What about the mountain of food that was inside the shop!?”
Sariel “Everything has been moved to your room.”
Emma “Then, where’s Rio!?”
Sariel “Of course, right over here.”
When Sariel snapped his fingers—
Rio “Emma, it’s been a few hours! I really wanted to see you.”
Emma “What the—!?”
Rio who suddenly entered the audience hall was dressed like I had never seen him before.
(He looks like a butler... Or rather, he’s like a real one.)
Emma “Rio... What’s with that get-up?”
Rio “I decided to officially get a job here.”
Emma “Inside the castle!?”
Sariel “There is a single employee benefit in the Belle-System. Pets are allowed inside the Royal Castle.”
Emma “With pet you’re referring to...”
Sariel “This pet of yours, of course.” “When I entered the bookstore, he was barking so persistently that he didn’t leave me a choice but to take him along.”
Rio “Why, Emma was suddenly chosen as a candidate for Belle, so I was just a bit flustered, you know.” “I’m really glad that Sariel is such a reasonable person.”
It was the first time a saw Sariel at a loss for words.
Emma “Sariel, aren’t you looking a bit tired?”
Sariel “Of course I am not... hehe.”
(Something must have happened between those two.)
A small cough, as if going back to square one, resounded in the place.
Sariel “Since he’s just right, I will let him be your caretaker.” “Properly follow your master’s orders, hound.”
Rio “Yes! Emma, whatever happens, I will protect you. So don’t worry, okay?”
Emma “Thanks, Rio. And... Sorry for getting you involved.”
Rio “Not at all. Rather, to think that the day actually came when I can call you Master... Aah, it’s like a dream come true!”
Emma “You’re not calling me that, right?”
(But... Having the usual Rio here with me is really reassuring.)
Sariel “Well now, play with your pet later and quickly read the terms and conditions, please.”
Urged to do so, I once again attempted my fight with the documents... But with this pace it would be late at night by the time I finished reading.
(Aah, seriously... Reading all of this is impossible after all!) (Enough already, I’ll take my time reading it later.)
I flipped through the document in a hurry and reached for the prearranged quill pen. When I wrote down my name on the covenant, Sariel traced around the letters in satisfaction.
Sariel “Thank you very much. With this you have now officially become Belle.” “Our princes are an assembly of peculiar people who can’t be dealt with by ordinary means.” “But, please, choose a good king with your pure heart, will you?”
Emma “... Yes. I will, without fail, show you that I can fulfill my duty.”
This was the first time I felt like Sariel was sincerely smiling.
Rio “Okay, Emma. This is a bit sudden, but shall we go to our new love nest?”
Emma “You’re talking about your own room, right? Thanks, I’ll count on you to lead the way.”
(I have a lot of worries about this, but...) (Since this is something I chose myself, I will never regret it.)
When I looked back, one of the deep crimson petals had fallen inside the glass dome.
(Getting to know them, getting to know the country... and determining the king.)
After Emma and Rio had left the throne room.
Sariel “I think I will be truly busy from now on.”
With the wind that blew through the door left wide open, the letters spelled on the very last page of the overlapping official papers which would later on be what severely disturb our fates were revealed...
Covenant Clause 99 『After the selection period has finished, absolutely any relationship between “Belle” and the Crown is prohibited.』
But this was something nobody knew just yet at that time—...

I been wondering how many untranslated sub stories hlitf left? And which one, that u want to be translate asap
at first i was just going to answer this as “a lot”, but i was curious and really decided to count the actual number. and the answer is A LOT. 129 untranslated substories to be exact!! (128 when ayumu’s episode 0 comes out). i also didn’t count “discontinued stories” or reward stories (the ones you can only get if you met campaign requirements) or repackaged stories (there’s a substory which is just the text version of goto/kaga/shinonome’s voiced stories, and another 5 which are just goto/kaga/shinonome’s voiced stories split by chapter rather than character. i also didn’t check koi cafe.
there are so many that i want to be translated!! but let me list a few of the ones i want the most:
all of the 勘違い ♡ BABY stories, also bc the SP (bodyguards) appear in these stories~
in kaga’s one, you go on a diet cause he squished your stomach and said it was soft while he was sleeping lol and also bc ayumu is compiling photos for something like a yearbook (graduation album) and saw you about to eat a doughnut and told you that the camera adds 10lbs. because you go on a soy-heavy diet, your period isn’t arriving and you go see an obgyn as recommended by riko. in the hospital, you bump into katsuragi!! anyway you left your phone in the obgyn department and get called to retrieve it on the loudspeaker so katsuragi and shinonome hear it and assume you’re pregnant. you tell shinonome to keep it a secret and then he blackmails you into helping him with the grad album and kaga gets annoyed since you’re listening to someone other than your master. when he finds out that you went to the hospital to see an obgyn he’s just... SO SOFT AND CARING???????? he makes you lie down and sleep and he makes you so much food and is relieved that your complexion is back to normal and when you tell him the reason you started dieting he APOLOGISES ALSKDJFLAS. one of the options to respond to his apology is asking him if he has a fever lol. another option is telling him to stop (apologising) and be mean like he usually is and then he’s like are you a masochist lmao.
anyway he tells you that if you really are pregnant, don’t hide it next time since “it’s OUR problem” and not just yours. he also says that not speaking up might harm you and that he doesn’t intend for your relationship to be loose/casual (meaning he’s serious about being with you). HELP I LOVE KAGA.
afterwards, katsuragi is in the instructor’s room to do something and then he thinks you’re pregnant so he gives you a congratulatory bouquet from your team and ayumu literally loses it.
I LOVE THIS STORY SO MUCH i can’t WAIT until it’s translated!! you all know i love soft/caring kaga the most and getting that + pregnancy misunderstanding + katsuragi + ayumu being a brat all in one story? *chefs kiss* incredible. i read this story on sato’s room, my favourite jp blog for hlitf content.
in goto’s one, where you go to a drinking party with naruko but it turns out to be a group date (goukon). sora and kurosawa make an appearance (naturally!!)
kaiji makes an appearance in ishigami’s route in which you go to his place to retrieve some documents for him and find lipstick and a lingering scent at his place after he cancels a date because he’s busy with work...
shinonome’s one is the one i’ve briefly mentioned before where his mc ends up with a porn dvd by accident. ayumu also gets jealous of mizuki in it (since his mc in particular just loves mizuki and is starstruck every time she sees him lol, the same thing happens in one of his vip room chapters too )
soma’s route is the one i also posted about recently where you have a matchmaking meeting with subaru. i’ve mentioned this like 5 times before but i literally am dying to see subaru/soma dynamics since subaru is usually so alpha male but soma was his mentor and senpai and trained him in criminal affairs and he really respects him, so i’m desperate to see them interact particularly in a competitive(?) setting.
there’s another substory i want which is just for kaga and soma called ふれない夜を過ごすとき (when you spend a night without touching). the common factor in both stories is that mc turns down kaga and soma’s advances in bed (because of different story-related reasons) and it results in a ‘cold’ night where they just go to sleep. it’s so appropriate for these two considering they’re the most sexual/physical in the whole title.
in this substory, voltage alternates between your pov and his pov for each chapter which i think is so interesting. i also love seeing both instructors being so ANXIOUS? about being turned down, since it never happens. and they’re so accepting of your rejection but so worried and hurt asdlkfs i love it. seeing soma being rattled for once is an incredible feeling lmao. and also seeing the third chapter from his perspective is so cool because you really get to see him put his detective skills to use when it comes to gathering information.
a fun detail in kaga’s route is that at the beginning you watch a film together called “ 私の名は” (obviously meant to be playing on “your name” kimi no na wa) haha. by the way, this is also the substory where we meet akane (who you may have seen in kaga vip room stories and ss3). i’m not going to spoil who akane actually is but let’s just say it was totally unexpected...
aside from these two i want:
入捜査は蜜の味 which is a substory about going on undercover mission with your man. by the way, in this substory, kosugi from my sweet bodyguard is already a famous actress whose shows sell out in under a minute.
離れるの禁止!-手錠で1日独り占め♡ー a substory just for kaga, goto and shinonome where you end up handcuffed to your instructor for a day
私を見つけて☆王子様 an AU substory with kaga, shinonome and namba routes since they won places in the 2015 election. the concept is like a cinderella x tanabata situation and it’s honestly HYSTERICAL.
in the kaga ver, shinonome and soma are your evil stepbrother and stepfather respectively and you can only see kaga once a year. you met him in town last year and you spent a day (and night ;)) together and now you want to go to the ball this year. goto and kurosawa are your wizards (fairy godmothers) and their sprites wear giant witch hats with their regular suits. it’s literally so funny. ishigami is kaga’s butler and honestly, he is such a claude lmao. kurosawa reappears disguised as a prince and tries to get you to dance with him and prince hyogo literally tosses him out of the way and calls him nouveau riche ;alskfdjls. anyway he does the whole “i don’t care about your status” thing and wants to be with you. turns out it was a dream the whole time and you tell kaga about it and he’s like i don’t want that fucking megane to be my butler lmaooo (amongst other cute things that he says)
in the namba ver., kaga and shinonome are your stepbrothers A and B. they’re bullying you as usual and then prince namba shows up. i love how kaga is prince hyogo but namba is just prince namba. he whisks you away to a bar somewhere after joking that you don’t have sex appeal because you’re <30 year old and then butler ishigami comes to get him lol. prince namba tells you to grow a little next time you meet and then ishigami is like stop it with the harrassment, you are already being complained about by princesses from neighbouring countries lmaoooo. anyway you get grounded by stepbrothers kaga and shinonome and your evil stepfather soma and made to stay indoors and do chores for the rest of your life while they go to the tanabata ball. wizard goto appears and he’s SHY LOL and he uses his magic to dress you up and whisk you to the ball, where you see prince namba again. you’re about to kiss and then the bell rings and you flee before the date changes (since wizard goto’s magic only works on july 7 lol). literally an entire year passes and you wish to see prince namba at the ball again and wizard goto shows up to grant your wish. however, your evil stepfamily burst in and tie you and wizard goto up because they knew you used magic to go to the ball last year hahahahahhaa. you somehow escape and ride goto’s horse to the ball and namba sees you cause your horse is like screaming/making some really weird noise. he brings you inside and has a whole bunch of gowns and accessories laid out and is like “this old man doesn’t know what kids like so just pick whatever”. you get all dolled up and he tells you he’s impressed by how mature you look and that he was waiting for you and long story short he takes you on a garden stroll and gets on his knees and asks you to be with him forever. naturally, it’s a dream and you wake up in the reference room where you chat a bit with namba and then you end up going for ramen but this is before namba ms2 probably so you aren’t together yet and you lament that he just sees you as a trainee.
i can’t find a copy of shinonome’s ver online and i spent all my money on intl voltage so sadly i can’t summarise it but i bet it’s equally ridiculous and funny.
カクテルグラスに愛をのせて a really cute set of substories featuring ishigami, namba and soma which are all about “cocktail language” (as in cocktails having different meanings). i want soma’s one to be translated so badly so i can see dumbass mc being fooled over and over and over again by everyone’s lies and then soma ultimately being SO cute~
彼が野生動物だった件 this one is basically about you and your man not being able to touch each other because you need to hide your relationship from tsugaru’s surveillance - but when it’s over, you get devoured by your frustrated boyfriend...
カレが妬くと大変なことになりまs aka all of those rival jealousy stories. naturally i’m most desperate for soma v shinonome. also, the first of these stories to come out (a while before any of the other ones) was kaga vs tsugaru, so i thought haha they replaced the “す” with “s” for sadist. they kept the titling like this for every single rival pair (namba v kurosawa, ishigami v goto, soma v shinonome) and i was like oh that does undermine it... but then i realised that as tsugaru once said, their entire department is full of sadists and public safety division should be renamed to SM division so~
aside from all of those, i want all the anniversary stories as well with their accompanying CGs and/or manga!!
ahh... there’s also the 2/365 birthday story (which is where ishigami gifts you the matching watch btw) which is literally just everyone spoiling you and it’s so cute. anyway if i don’t stop this now i will keep going on and on and on but basically every single hlitf substory is AMAZING? i hope they release the untranslated summer ones soon too as summer is coming up!
ETA: I FORGOT TO MENTION I ALSO WANT THIS WHOLE SET: 逆転バレンタイン- 恋人は専属補佐官 which is a valentine special where basically the roles are reversed and you are the instructor and he is your exclusive aide~
and i want the entire kare kiss set as well because you know how much i love a jealousy plot ;)
EDIT 2: I ALSO FORGOT TO MENTION 加賀兵吾の再調教 if only just for this one image
and this formalwear sprite
and also just the drama of you being locked in a cage barely conscious for days while kaga has to pretend to sell you to a perverted millionaire
by the way, the heart necklace you’re wearing in the cg is something that kaga gave in one of his main routes iirc and he literally tramples on it in this special... the DRAMA

I recently made a list of all the musicals I’m pretty familiar with and it came out to 63. and since my sisters won’t listen to my recommendations this is a masterpost of all those musicals with a few of my Thoughts and Opinions. this gets hella long so prepare yourself
-Les Miserables
ah, you never forget your first. I heard the symphonic recording when I was six? seven? so it has become the definitive version in my mind, but cast members (michael ball) are weak, and unfortch I haven’t come across a recording were all the cast members are top notch, though the 25th anniversary concert comes very close (norm lewis!! lea salonga!!)
-The Little Mermaid
ok so on the whole this show is not particularly great or interesting and honestly didn’t do very well on stage BUT hearing sherie rene scott sing poor unfortunate souls literally changed my life and is what really sparked my interest in musical theatre. also norm lewis is there
-The Band’s Visit
unlike any broadway musical you’ve heard fs. based on the movie of the same name, it’s about the egyptian police band being stranded in a middle-of-nowhere town in israel for in 1996. it’s a simple story but incredibly charming and ernest and surprsingly emotional. also the music is played onstage by the actors which is always cool!
-In the Heights
lin manuel miranda’s first musical and is honestly just as good as hamilton, if not better (I said what I said). it’s a slice of life kinda story about people living in washington heights. great music, great story, great characters, feels very real without being like....depressing.
-Aladdin
most of the songs from the movie stay mostly the same, I think they only changed arabian nights, and friend like me (which for the latter was a huuge improvement. I can’t NOT dance whenever I hear it. james monroe inglehart is a fantastic genie). and the flying carpet!! looks amazing!!
-Once on This Island
this story made me v mad initially (the female lead just. dies at the end), but I kept coming back to it because I loved the music, and it took me a while to figure out why and it’s because the caribbean island vibes are off the charts, and that reminds me of my childhood in sofl. and the vocals of the ensemble are amazing and the 2018 revival used a in the round stage with actual sand and live animals how cool is that
-She Loves Me
a super cute, super enjoyable, super fun musical based on the old film shop around the corner. zachery levi and laura benanti make some quality faces
-Next to Normal
oooof. a very intense show both in terms of theme and music. deals with bipolar depression, schizophrenia, drugs, suicide, hallucinations, death of a child....yeah. a very good show that handles all those heavy themes realistically
-Hamilton
so yeah when it first came out five years ago it was very hyped up and was called lin manuel’s “masterpiece” and when I listened to it I was like....dam they’re right. the lyrics and wording are so precise and having a story told by the protag’s enemy is so narratively juicey. plus the music is incredible (also listen to the hamilton mixtape if you haven’t it’s great)
-The Lion King
if you’ve followed me for any time you know I love the movie and the musical only makes it better. the songs, the music, the puppets, heather headley, the songs in zulu, the costumes...ugh perfection. the most successful disney show on broadway
-Aida
ever wonder what it’s like to be so darn good at singing that sir elton john writes a musical for you? well that’s what happened to heather headley and she completely deserved it. it’s a bit problematic in that the egyptian conquerors are all white and all the nubia slaves are black and like....they’re both in africa dude
-Anastasia
ok so I know it didn’t happen but the premise is so compelling and so gd tragic and christy altomare’s voice has such a fragility to it which is such a contrast to who anastasia actually was and the show features a song about russian refugees having to flee their homeland and it’s like the saddest song I’ve ever heard
-Anything Goes
honestly this musical on the whole isn’t that great for some...reasons, but it does have some great Friendship songs and Great tap dancing and sutton foster is in it and she is the epitome of a triple threat
-Cinderella
honestly just watch the brandy version because it’s the best version. better than the broadway version for sure, even though laura osnes is fantastic in everything she does and the show does have an amazing onstage costume change, but the brandy version has the coolest cast and costume and sets
-Ragtime
ho boy. so much to unpack here. while I think this is a “good” musical, it is too long, has too many characters and storylines, and deals with some heavy themes but doesn’t handle them very well so by the end it’s just exhausting and disappointing. BUT it does have the incomparable brian stokes mitchell and audra mcdonald, who is literally the best performer to ever grace broadway
-Thoroughly Modern Millie
there is so much spirit in this show it’s infectious. also sutton foster
-Dear Evan Hanson
sigh. so this musical gained a lot popularity among the Young People and...it..didn’t...deserve it? like again it deals with heavy issues like social anxiety, depression, and suicide, but like ragtime it doesn’t handle them very well; not in an honest way. and like everything they talk about is handled better in next to normal so
-Tuck Everlasting
based on the book, not the movie. the music is something really different and I don’t think broadway was ready to accept it so it didn’t run very long. and the adaption isn’t very strong, but the lead (sarah charles lewis) is very good and it does have a very sad song about miles losing his family
-Come From Away
so this is about the 38 planes that were diverted to a small town in newfoundland on 9/11. now with as much as america loves to talk about 9/11 I had never heard this story so it was cool to hear a different side of it. also it has a song that makes me tear up every time I hear it
-Annie
not much to say about this one. a classic
-Oklahoma!
speaking of classics, if you think this musical is boring and outdated, please listen to the 2019 revival. it rocks in every sense of the word
-West Side Story
this one is also a classic, and often called a masterpiece for good reason. the music is so strong and is integrated so well and it represents the characters on both sides. this video explains it really well. tho productions consistently have trouble finding puerto rican actors to play the puerto ricans....
-Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812
this one deserved sooo much more than it got, coming out in the same year as dear shmevan shmhanson. the lighting and set design is incredible and the music reflects each character’s emotion so it feels really honest, and almost like a supporting character. it’s so good guys. it has josh groban in a fat suit
-The Phantom of the Opera
unpopular opinion (maybe): I think gerard butler was a really good phantom. probably andrew llyod webber’s best work
-Waitress
based on the film of the same name, also the first broadway show with an entirely female creative team. also what baking can do came after my entire life
-Hello Dolly!
I fell in love with the movie version with barbra streisand, but then I learned that the original broadway production had a all black cast which is awesome but wasn’t reflected at all in the movie and that’s disappointing. great show tho
-Wicked
I can distinctly remember the first time I heard the ending crescendo of defying gravity. and the fact that it has so quickly become classic staple of broadway is a testiment to how strong it is
-You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown
yes there is a broadway show of charlie brown. the songs are funny and childlike and honest, and very ernest. also kristin chenoweth is hilarious as sally brown (she won a tony for it!)
-Chess
I love the music in the show, and some songs have very complex lyrics but the main character is kinda annoying. like yeah dude deserting your country with another woman and leaving your wife and kids behind is gonna have negative consequences. don’t know what to tell you
-Finding Neverland
not as good as the movie it’s based on. while some of the music is very pretty, the songs are pretty simple and kinda boring
-Venice
ok this show also isn’t very good, the character’s motivations are not clear, especially the villain, and the female lead’s songs are weak. but the premise and some of the songs are arresting, and I kept coming back to them
-The King and I
like wws, it took a very long time for a production to cast this show accurately, and it still hasn’t....quite done it. but the songs are very beautiful. r&h strike again.
-Matilda
features a bunch of v talented children and manages to be lighthearted but also really gets you. just listen to when I grow up
-Little Women
on the whole, not a great adaption. some good songs. sutton foster is great
-Bonnie and Clyde
oh boy you want some bad guy songs? how bout a whole musical of them? oh no the public hated us and we closed after 36 performances. ah well. at least laura osnes got her first tony nod
-Beetlejuice
very catchy show with a killer aesthetic. give alex brightman a tony just for being Like That
-Hadestown
this show has such nice lyrical rhythm, even in the spoken words, and it is so smartly composed and balanced. and even tho the broadway cast recording is out, it’s worth it to listen to the earlier album as well
-Catch Me If You Can
based on the film. just two hours of aaron tveit being a little brat and norbert leo butz flexing on everyone else’s vocal chords
-Miss Saigon
an extremely problematic and infuriating show that is unfortunately very beautiful. introduced lea salonga to the world, so that’s good at least
-The Hunchback of Notre Dame
speaking of problematic but beautiful shows. exceeds the movie in my opinion. the choral vocals just cut right through you
-The Fiddler on the Roof
I listened to the 2016 revival after not listening to this show for years and you know what? it’s really good! like heck!
-Mean Girls
yes they made a musical of mean girls. yes it’s pretty great. regina has a killer song near the end that I love to belt out
-Bandstand
one of the only musicals to make me cry actual tears just from listening to one (1) song. it’s about WWII veterans coming together to form a band just months after the war ends. also laura osnes fricking kills it in the last number
-Into the Woods
I’m not a huge fan of “fairy tales but make it realistic and therefore disappointing” but stephen sondheim is a very good writer and musician so it’s worth checking out. and the witch is played by bernadette peters in the musical and meryl streep in the movie so it’s a win both ways
-How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying
what it says on the can. a very fun, ‘don’t take this too seriously’ show. the lead was played by daniel radcliffe and nick jonas at one point so like. come on
-The Last Five Years
honestly this is a very depressing show, but it’s told in a interesting way. it’s about a couple who meet, fall in love, get married, drift apart, and ultimately get divorced, but not in that order
-Newsies
ok so the broadway version is very different from the movie, but it’s still worth checking out! the new verse at the beginning of seize the day makes it worth it!
-Legally Blonde
yes they made a musical of legally blonde. yes it’s great
-Daddy Long Legs
a little known musical about a young woman who is aging out of an orphanage and finds out she is being sent to school by a mysterious benefactor. meghan mcginnis has super sweet voice
-My Fair Lady
another problematic show about a british asshole who takes it upon himself to turn a flower girl into a “proper lady” (no one asked you to do that dude). but it is funny
-South Pacific
ok so I’m not actually super familiar with this show but it does have a very important song called you’ve got to be carefully taught about how racism is not “something you’re just born” so stop making excuses nellie
-Once
again I’m not super knowledgeable about this show, I’ve listened to it a few times, and read the wiki summary but I still don’t quite know what it’s about. but the music is really good, really different from a traditional broadway show. very enticing and sentimental
-Beauty and the Beast
I think this was the first disney movie that made it to broadway? I could be wrong. like hunchback, I think it exceeds the movie, esp if I can’t love her??? shoutout to my sister’s friend for blowing my socks off with that song in 2005
-Six
not a full blown production, just a rock show about the six wives of henry viii. I thought it would be like riding off the hamilton craze of “history but make it cool” but it actually kicks ass all by itself
-The Sound of Music
another classic, and edelweiss makes me emotional
-Billy Elliot
ahh this show has so much tangible emotion in it and it’s heavy but children are it and they carry it so well and the juxtaposition of the protests an d the dancing UGH
-The Lightning Thief
yes the percy jackson musical! is good and enjoyable! doesn’t take itself seriously at all (as it shouldn’t) and the last two songs go so hard!
-The Music Man
this is imprinted into my brain because of my sister’s drama group and from that day on I have never known peace
-The Scarlet Pimpernel
based on the film of the same name, it’s really good, the opening number goes really hard, and it SHOULD be revived with laura osnes
-Oliver!
this show is....good..but it’s just too long. too many extra songs that don’t do anything
-Sussical
beautifully whimsical and heartfelt. features an array of suess characters and stories
-Moulin Rouge!
the cast album that came late year and it kicks ass. it keeps some of the songs that were featured in the movie, and brings in songs that have come out since the movie like shut up and dance, royals, and bad romance
-The Greatest Showman
so technically this isn’t a broadway show, but it’s going to be, and I think it will be much better as a stage show than a movie.
#broadway#good lord this took way too long#I didn't provide links for everyone but pls click the ones that are there!#frick this took forever#but! talk to me about musicals! I love them and my sisters won't listen to my recommendations!

Best Disney Live Action to date.
This is my opinion and mine alone. You have your own. Watch out for spoilers if you haven't seen the movie yet.
What a ride. What a surprise. What a delight this movie actually is. The first promotional content did nothing, or very little to excite me about this movie. I was really gonna watch it just to see Will Smith’s work. Then good reviews started to pop out and those truly gave me hope. I still kept my expectations relatively low. But now I was excited to watch it. The idea was to watch the movie on Saturday, but stuff came up and couldn't be. Anyways, two great things happened about watching it on Sunday: First I got to watch it with more family members. I’m so happy they didn't miss this movie, you just can’t miss it. And second, I got to watch it in its original language! I'm sure the dub would have been good, but I really needed to hear the actors’ voices, the dialogues and more than anything the songs in their original language. It’s important to me.
I had my doubts about almost everyone in the cast. But in the end, if anyone made a mistake (which mistakes can totally happen and maybe they happened) I think they were so minor that I didn’t care if there was something off. The whole movie is just so good. I couldn’t care less about any mistake or off thing that could have been going on.
What I’m about to write may be weird. I felt that every character was very different to its animated counterpart. The story was pretty much the same, and of course the characters are the same (except for a couple of funny and good additions) yet they felt different to me. They felt very down-to-earth, very grounded, very fleshed out, very real. Which I think that's the whole point of these live action movies; or at least I think it should be that way.
So far I enjoyed and liked all the live actions I've seen (Maleficent, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, The Jungle Book). But so far only Aladdin although being fair, Maleficent has it's own category has added content that served perfectly to enrich the movie and its characters. I see it that way anyway. It left me wanting to see more of them. I wanna see this gang again. Heck, I wanna watch the movie again. I really think it should have a sequel. More than anything I think this live action has established enough content to continue with another movie.
On a side note. Beauty and the Beast is my favorite animated Disney movie and if the live action doesn't make a sequel, I'm honestly not complaining. Here I am, perfectly well without a live action Beauty and the Beast sequel. And about Maleficent. I never thought it would have a sequel, and when I heard there would be one I was like: Ok. Maleficent is a whole other take on the Sleeping Beauty movie. A pretty interesting take if you ask me. And I’m curious to see how the sequel turns out. I loved Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent and I don’t mind seeing more of that. I think it'll be worth it.
About how I felt these characters were different to their animated counterparts. I think the most obvious is the Sultan. But man what a great change. I think every character was very likeable. Every good character that is. And the Sultan is so likable as a ruler and as a father. Of course he is a little flawed in those regards, but he grows and learns accordingly. I think everyone can or should understand where he’s coming from. It isn’t hard to understand his position. I'm not very comfortable comparing the live action to the animation. And I hope I won't do it (or do it much) writing further. But I think I dare say I liked this version of the Sultan better than the animated one. I just really cared more about him as a character and as a person. He even got a little action in the confrontation with Jafar and the dancing at the end of the movie. Way to go Sultan! He is a caring and loving father to Jasmine and father-daughter relationships are kind of my Achilles heel on Disney movies (Belle and Maurice, Ariel and Triton). Quite frankly, I never really cared for this father-daughter relationship with the animated movie, I'm guilty of that. But the live action version of these characters are a whole other story. The Sultan was overall a far more competent character and I loved it.
Oh boy I had so many doubts with Naomi Scott as Jasmine. But seeing her first interactions with Aladdin at the market place and at Aladdin’s street rat home, I was so charmed by her acting and charisma. Not to mention her beautiful hair and those beautiful, beatiful brown eyes of hers. Jasmine got quite the changes too, and I think most were very well done. This Jasmine is truly a ruler and leader in the making. Ready to be the first Sultana (that’s the proper term) of the land. She lacks some experience, of course, but she has all the tools she needs. I was impressed with all the knowledge this girl has at her disposal. Although, she's a Princess, of course she knows her studies. While the animated Jasmine feels rebellious “not wanting to be a Princess” and seems to ponder too much on the freedom she’s missing; live action Jasmine shows great conviction on wanting to help and better her people, her country and kingdom. She doesn't know much of Agrabah's outsides but once she gets out there and sees the market place full of people working and coexisting, she sees the community that lives under the Sultan's care and understands that those people are what make Agrabah so precious. Even from her balcony Jasmine gets to see her people's lives and how much they deserve to live happily and without fear of wars and losing loved ones (like she and the Sultan lost Jasmine's mother). Agrabah was done so lively that it’s easy to see why Jasmine wants so badly to be the next one on taking care of the kingdom and its people. She wants to make them happy and prosperous. Again, she is very likable. And most importantly, if some think these changes are to push some agenda (I thought that at first), well, if they are at least they don't feel forced. I think all these changes added a lot of depth and character to the character. To me they made Jasmine richer and a better role model.
Again someone that surprised me. Mena Massoud’s Aladdin turned out to be quite refreshing to me. In all honesty I wish I could explain better why I think this Aladdin differs from the animated one, but I lack the words. What I value the most of this interpretation is the simplicity and humility in character. He is more aware of himself. And while he does say the line “When you don’t have anything, you have to act as if you own everything.”, this guy doesn't feel pretentious at all. He is still very much down-to-earth and it shows greatly when he becomes Prince Ali. At least for the first part. I loved how awkward and/or insecure he is as Prince Ali during the Prince Ali musical number and when meeting the Sultan and Princess Jasmine. That scene is truly hilarious, with all the right jokes and all the right faux pas. Then there's the moment when the Prince gig gets to his head and is so believable how he gets lost in that lie and that facade, that it made me feel bad for him. In a pitiful way. Whereas in the animated movie I felt Aladdin was being a jerk to Genie and it made me think he deserved to be left alone. I definitely sympathize better with this Aladdin. Great chemistry between him and Jasmine from start to finish. Also I think it was very adorable to have Jasmine pretend to be the Princess' servant when she meets Aladdin for the first time. It made the blooming relationship more endearing and natural. Very appreciated. The animated movie honestly only makes me care about the Genie, but this live action truly made me care about every character. The good ones that is.
I still think Marwan Kenzari’s voice doesn’t fit Jafar at all. But this Jafar is still a good villain. I think he felt more cold blooded to me. He had a little background that benefited the character, not like they tried to do with Gaston on the Beauty and the Beast live action. And this depth not only made Jafar a little more interesting, it helped Aladdin's character as well. Jafar's past as a thief not only gives reason for his ambitions and goals, it’s also a good example of what our hero Aladdin could have become if he kept on the abusive/ambitious path of power. I think that provided quite the scare in thinking that if Jafar went through this manipulative, power hungry way; that could very well happen to Aladdin. This Jafar lacks the animated one’s theatrics but I still consider him a descent villain.
Very much like Robin Williams’ Genie is the heart and soul of the animated classic. Will Smith’s Genie is the heart and soul of this live action. Hands down my favorite character in the whole movie. Robin (R.I.P.) must be very proud with everything Will did. He was so charismatic, sympathetic, funny, charming, such a lovable character I swear to God. No one will ever convince me that this Genie wasn't perfect in every way, shape, or form. I loved how at the party in the palace he kept telling Ali to not ruin it for him. He's been trapped inside a lamp for thousands of years and he really wanted to enjoy a good party. The character with the most heart in the film and with powerful lessons to teach. Two of those will stay with me forever. The first, and I believe the intentional one, is that no matter how much riches you possess; no money, or jewels, or power will ever satisfy you nor make you happy. I wish more people in the world would see and understand that... And second, and this is I think more my interpretation than the movie's intention, to be human is what makes someone truly free. Although "being human" is such a vast term. I hope you understand what I mean. Anyways, what a freaking powerful message. This Genie wishes freedom. But that freedom isn't just to not be his master's slave or the lamp's slave. This Genie wishes to be human; he doesn't want to be an all powerful being for all eternity. And something happened in this movie that helped in a very sweet way to make this Genie even more human.
And that is Dalia. What a revelation this character is. Best addition to a live action adaptation ever. To be honest when I first heard of the character I really thought this live action would be ruined from the start. Who was this Dalia? Why Jasmine needed a handmaiden? Why was she white? Truth is Dalia is a much needed character. Also Nasim Pedrad who portrays Dalia was born on Iran to Iranian parents, and that made me more comfortable about her as a character in this movie. Dalia is a much welcomed addition to the colorful cast. Her character feels organic in this well known tale. She's not only Jasmine’s handmaiden but is also a true friend and her loyal confidant. And not to offend my favorite tiger, but the Princess really needed some human friend to talk to. Sure Dalia is a servant, but never once she complains about her place; even if it shows that on the inside she would like to enjoy more of the outside world as well as the Princess and have a life of her own. Dalia is quite insightful, she knows the Princess very well, she's very funny, and charming. We get to see how much and how well she cares for Jasmine and quickly becomes an endearing character. That scene where she pretends to be the Princess in favor of Jasmine being able to play the handmaiden character with Aladdin a little longer was incredibly funny. Not just she makes Jasmine a more well round character, she helps the Genie as well with their little romance. Such good content with these two. One of my favorite scenes was when the Genie wanted to ask Dalia out on an evening stroll and he, much like Prince Ali meeting the Princess, got all awkward and even mentions that Aladdin's behavior is contagious. Obviously he knows how to treat women right, with delicacy and respect. But also he's been imprisoned for so long that it isn't hard to see how he would be a bit clumsy when trying to court a girl he really felt infatuated with. Their interactions are just really sweet and charming.
The best part happens when Aladdin wishes for Genie's freedom and he does become human. And it is because of the lamp's very specific instructions that I believe a message for this movie is how being human makes us free beings. When making a wish Genie can't stress enough to Aladdin that he has to be very specific with his words, there's a lot of grey areas in wishes and he must wish carefully. Aladdin's third wish is of course to set Genie free, but he mentions nothing about making the Genie human. Still, the moment Aladdin wishes for Genie to be free he is turned human. And that's a very powerful message, even more so these days. It is the lessons this movie shows through Genie that truly capture the heart of the movie. Another example is when human Genie at the end of the movie asks for another chance to court Dalia. The affection is very much returned by the handmaiden and while she says that she is new at this dating stuff, she says that she accepts and that she wants to get married, have kids, and a boat. And all of that actually happens. And this is one more powerful message that I chose to interprete this movie tried to tell: even without being an all powerful being, humans are able to make their dreams/wishes come true. Genie and Dalia do get married, they have two kids a boy and a girl like she wanted, and they get a small boat like he wanted. Humans can make their wishes come true even without some magical help and that's Disney at it's best.
Let’s talk a little about the “sidekicks”. I enjoyed Abu being less caricaturistic. I know people adore Abu’s personality in the animation. But I think since this Aladdin was more serene in attitude, this Abu accompanied him very well. I adored Rajah. I'm very happy he showed up as much as he did. I honestly thought he wouldn't have as much screen time. I love his protectiveness over Jasmine most of all, but I also appreciate his good judge of character. Carpet was perfect. I think he suffered no change at all from the animated movie. So full of personality. I liked very much how during conversations the Genie would include Carpet and Abu into the chat. It made the monkey and carpet feel all the more real. Also, it hurt to see Carpet all torn when he was trying to escape giant Iago. And speaking of Iago. One of my favorite villainous sidekicks in Disney movies. This Iago is so not like the animated one. But that isn’t a bad thing. This bird looked creepy, and while it lacked all of Gilbert Gottfried’s personality, it made up in competence. This Iago is as cold blooded as his master, quite the spy, and a very effective giant boss fight. Thank you so much for keeping him a talking parrot. Very pleased with Alan Tudyk‘s work. And even if Iago's role is minor in the live action, he still serves very well his purpose.
Let's wrap this up with the music! Overall I loved it. Sure there are weak moments, but I think that didn't damage the movie at all. The film was just oh so entertaining on its own. Jasmine's new song Speechless is quite good. But the reprise was a little poorly executed visually-wise. I also think it sounds too pop-ish for it's own good. One Jump Ahead was weak in comparison to the original. The singing was pretty good, the music well "updated", but Aladdin was too relaxed walking here and there instead of running for his life. I liked a lot that Jasmine was part of the scene though. And congratulations to the woman with the "Still I think he's rather tasty" line, what a voice, and she was gorgeous. A Whole New World is very much the same and that's good. Both actors did great singing, Naomi's voice is incredible and Mena really surprised me as a good singer. That song doesn't need to be touched and they didn't touch it. Some may complain that Carpet didn't take Aladdin and Jasmine around the world, but I don't think it was needed. This Jasmine cared too much for her land that it was very sweet of Aladdin and Carpet to take Jasmine around Agrabah. She even admitted that Prince Ali knows more of Agrabah in the "few days" he's been to the kingdom than she has known all her life. It was fitting in my opinion to keep the ride to Agrabah. What was leaked of the Prince Ali performance doesn't make the whole thing justice. Sure it isn't as big scaled as the animated one, but is still a good show. And Oh My God WILL SMITH DID THE IN DRAG GAG!!!!!! I completely thought they wouldn't do it and Jesus Christ I laughed so hard, and was so happy they did it!!! He looked great, it was so funny. That alone made the song a success to me I swear. I couldn't ask for more. A Friend Like Me is another hit. A lot of detail, energy, I think the special effects were great. My favorite song from the animated movie and one of my top favorites in this live action. I think the new adaptation that takes the cake is Arabian Nights. Loved the longer lyrics, the visuals, and Will Smith being the one to sing it. We have Will Smith portraying a fisherman at the start of the movie. Then two adorable children ask their father to tell a story, and they prefer he sings the story. At first the fisherman says no singing since it's been a long day, but he soon indulge his kids and begins singing the opening number. The camera goes over Agrabah, we get glimpses of the characters in the tale. The Sultan in the palace, the Princess by he fountain with her tiger, a somber figure before the Cave of Wonders. We hear of the diamond in the rough requirement and go back to Agrabah. The way everything is presented feels so fairy tale like. And the opening number gets even better when right at the end we get the hint and confirmation that the fisherman and the kids are actually Genie and his and Dalia's kids. In all honesty I thought Will Smith was playing a whole different character with he fisherman. And even though we see the fisherman's wife from he back on the boat nd we hear her voice, I couldn't guess it was them till the end of the movie. Needless to say that revelation was fantastic.
I apologize for any typos. I know there's stuff I didn't write about like the couple of dance numbers going on, but they were great. I loved how gorgeous Jasmine looked at the palace's party. Her dancing was mesmerizing too. Hooray for the Jasmine and Aladdin wedding at the end! I made this long enough and whatever topic you wanna talk about, hit my ask box anytime.
Best Disney live action to date everyone. Highly recommend.

Venusian Radio
This was written and edited last night. Thanks to @programaticallydelicious for editing help--now it doesn’t read like a textbook so much!
For as long as humans have been sentient, we’ve looked at the stars. They’re a source of both inspiration and fear—just as regular as the sun and moon, but in unfathomably strange ways. Constellations were easy, for they came by the season. There were some stars, though, that wandered, went back on their paths or shot ahead for no reason. We called these stars planets, for their wandering, and we believed they were the homes of the gods.
One of these homes was Venus. She often sits in the sky in the morning and evening, brighter than any nearby star. Her official name is that of the goddess of love, but we also call her the Morning Star. She’s captured our attention since ancient times. But she was shrouded in mystery—she never rose high enough to get a good look at her without haze and glare. The early images of her were shaky and confusing, and it wasn’t until we got into space that we got a proper image of her. We knew how fast she spun (a little faster than us), and what was in her air (close to ours, with noticeably more water vapor). However, that was only a sketch of her. We didn’t truly know what she looked like.
But we didn’t need to know what she looked like to find the people on her.
In 1937, a man named Grote Reber built a radio telescope in his backyard and aimed it at the stars. When he did so, he found a strange mess of information coming from Venus. A little work brought it into focus, and the knowledge floored scientists the world over.
That mess wasn’t natural. No-one could doubt it, because it was voices. Unintelligible, to be sure, but voices, speaking to each other. Even the start of World War II couldn’t dampen astronomers’ excitement. In spite of the war, they tried to figure out how to get a message out to Venus. Eventually, they decided to send a string of prime numbers out to Venus. Prime numbers, and greetings in every language we could muster. We had no way to know if they used the same base numbering system as us, or if they would want to talk to us. The atrocities that the war brought with it made it hard to think they would talk to us. But we hoped.
And they rewarded our hope by sending back a different string of prime numbers. The words after were unintelligible, but we at least had contact. We knew someone was there, and they knew we were here.
Once World War II ended, we started trying to send them more messages. Governments sent targeted broadcasts of TV and radio stations to Venus. Scientists sent mathematical concepts. We wanted our planetary cousins to know that we were here and ready to talk.
And they were ready too, because they sent things back.
From their TV stations, we learned that there were actually two sapient species on Venus. One, the Delosans, were water dwellers. They had grey-blue skins and webbed hands and feet. Some found their lack of hair off-putting, and their sexes looked the same. However, their large eyes helped to make them cute rather than terrifying. They lived in strange, fantastical underwater cities and coastal towns in the tropics. Their media stereotyped them as carefree fishers who traded their bounties for tech and tools to make their lives easier.
The second species, the Chrotors, were covered in hair, in shades ranging from red to blonde to black. Their arms were longer than human arms, but their faces were plenty human enough. They were more widespread than their aquatic counterparts, with cities all over the continents of Venus. Their stereotype was as the inventors and builders of Venus, who traded their tech for food.
Thankfully, both species seemed eager to talk to us. While it took some time, we managed to communicate. Subtitled movies and simple slideshows in English and Russian weren't much, but they were a start.
Why English and Russian? The Cold War was on, and the USA and USSR were in a race to see who could get to our neighbors first. However, the communication they sent back was nearly always in one language. When we asked, they told us that they had one language they used for diplomacy. They had strife between their various factions, of course. Using one language, though, meant that misunderstandings were less likely. This was especially important with two species with very different needs on the planet.
It was a bit of a slap in the face, all told. It became more of one when they expressed that they wanted to hear from all of us at the same time. The USA and the USSR could barely exist on the same planet; how were they supposed to get along enough to work together to send a message? Any sane person would have told you that it wasn’t going to happen.
But that sane person would have been wrong. Despite the Cold War, scientists from both countries managed to come together. They came up with a message for the Delosan and Chrotoran people. We filmed representatives from every UN country greeting them in their native language. We mixed the order together with no regard for alliances or animosity. We had a people to greet, and we were going to do it with all due politeness and joy. A revolving door of international stories followed, along with musical performances and art.
And with the stories and art and music came a surprise for us as well: we weren’t so different. There were dozens of versions of Cinderella out there. Every culture had its dances, and everyone had their favorite dish by their mom. As time went on, the stories became more personal. Different people from disparate cultures told each other stories from their lives over shared meals. Laughter and tears both resulted. It was hard to hate your opposing number when you’d shared a beer and a laugh. Even if it was for the benefit of some extra-terrestrials that were hanging on your every word.
This began to extend to the higher-ups, too. Presidents and Chairmen shared wine as they watched concerts. Senators and members of the Soviets played soccer together. Everyone was beginning to see each other as people, and that went a long way in making it easier to negotiate. By the sixties, talks of nuclear deescalation were seriously beginning. Even massive egos and sudden stumbling blocks like assassinations and impeachments couldn’t stop the snowballing effects of humanization, cheered on by people who were far more different from humans than humans were from each other.
By the early eighties, it was done. The USSR was pulling apart, piece by piece, and the US was actually helping the countries it had promised to help—which included Russia. There was still tension, but it was muted by the fact that we were all talking to the Delosans and Chrotors as equals, and they were doing the same with us. We sent ideas back and forth, new ways to talk and power and reach out to each other, both on our own planets and between our planets.
Throughout all of this, we’d been planning a way to actually meet our cousins in person. Traveling that distance was going to be a challenge. We also didn’t want to expose ourselves—or them—to new and potentially pandemic diseases. We’d sent them things on their request, and received things in return, but never something live. The closest we’d come was some dead-virus vaccines, since they wanted to compare genetics and immune systems. As it turned out, their process for vaccines was similar to ours. With the millennium closing, we began working on how best to adapt that for our diseases so they would be safe when we came.
So it was more than just a surprise when, on January 1st of the new year, a broadcast came through to NASA. They requested room to land at the Kennedy Space Center. Their shuttle would be arriving later that evening. Panic—excited panic, but panic all the same—engulfed the world, as leaders scurried to get to Florida and NASA tried to make sure their shuttle wouldn’t burn in and explode.
But all of it—every decade of it—was worth it to see a Delosan and a Chrotor walk off their strange-yet-familiar shuttle, grinning as they called, “We come in peace. Take us to your leader.”
I swear I could hear everyone around the world laughing with them as we all finally came together, over something that had started with a simple man’s radio telescope.

Bogoshipda (Look up ENGLISH VERSION)
No, this message is not for me because I have no one to dedicate it to but I know of someone who could relate to this. I am currently watching this KOREAN series from the PHILIPPINES year 2003: STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN about a childhood special friendship: wealthy handsome guy and a lovely lady who came from the middle class family. Its a very emotional tv series but its CUTE so I love watching it before I sleep. Its like a Cinderella story but she need to be blind for her not to see his presence and die from that story because of an illnesses that was so inevitable and her existence in that story was not like they live happily every after but to cut it short after that romance. However, before all these: The wealthy guy had to leave without her and finish his degree in the US. She fell into (an AMNESIA) while waving at him and before meeting him at the airport , she forgotten of who she really was until he found her inside the mall while copying a SLOGAN poster for an art that needed to be painted at the mall and she went in a hurry to go to the train station that's when he saw her in a quick glance in a side view appearance. It was such a good story line (korean soap opera) which was so popular in my country and I watch it with my female dorm mate during that year. This was less than 2 years before I was approve to come to America. I was asking this question inside my head. How will I understand the meaning of the song when I could only understand the MELODY without knowing the meaning of each lyrics because its in KOREAN? My i32 told me, ADD AND USE SEARCH. hehhe (of course, its easy) so If I put here the KOREAN song and listen to it without looking its translation from its original words, would you understand what the song IMPLY?

I MISS YOU (Stairway to Heaven song by DARYL ONG)
No matter how long you keep waiting for me, to be by your side we both know that it just cant be, why don't you see that I am only hurting you, please stop waiting why cant you just leave me, But I’m missing you, Im missing you, Even Though I shouldn't feel this way , crying on my knees and I wanna tell you, If only I could turn back the hands of time, those memories when we were so in love, those thoughts of you leave my heart longing for you, it hurts to know that I should let you go, coz I cant be the one for you, I know I shouldn't feel this way, But its true that I still... MISS YOU
I know its a very sad song but WE MOVE ON and give it a try for the version of the song you sang to question that I shouldn't feel this way: I SET YOU FREE IN YOUR OWN INTERPRETATION (to love your emotion and to voice your understanding about the sad music THAT IT JUST CANT BE...)
KWON SANG WOO said from this series, “ LOVE IS SOMETHING THAT RETURNS BACK.”

How 'Indiana Jones' Set the Model for the Future of ABC's 'Once Upon a Time
Showrunners Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis talk with THR about the big risk they're taking by reinventing the ABC fairy tale drama in its seventh season.
Perhaps one of the biggest swings this fall on among the broadcast networks is ABC's big bet on veteran Disney drama Once Upon a Time.
The fairy tale drama lost six core cast members at the end of season six and closed, in show terms, volume one in what's (hopefully) going to be a multiple-volume Once Upon a Time series. On Oct. 6, showrunners Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis will open a new book with a largely fresh cast (and a handful of returning favorites) as the show jumps forward to follow the adventures of an adult Henry (now played by Andrew J. West). That also includes a new version of Cinderella, a new persona for leading lady Lana Parilla and returning favorite Colin O'Donoghue.
And while the ratings for Once — like many other aging broadcast shows — have seen better days, the series boasts a loyal (and vocal) fan base and massive international audience as the show remains a key brand extension for the Disney-owned network.
So while reinventing the wheel is a big risk after losing fan favorites Ginnifer Goodwin, Jennifer Morrison and Josh Dallas, among others, in success, the rejiggered drama could pave the way for another multiple-season run as Once looks to take a page from the Indiana Jones playbook and follow its new hero on multiple adventures.
What's more, the optimistic show about finding goodness in everyone also provides a key piece of counterprogramming to heavier dramas with political undertones (see Scandal, Designated Survivor, among others). "There has to be one place where people can go that it's unabashedly hopeful," Kitsis tells THR of Once. And with a move to family-friendly Friday nights, ABC hopes to have found a way to keep its beloved franchise going strong for years to come.
Below, Kitsis and Horowitz talk with THR about the future of the franchise and inspiration behind its reboot.
Rebooting a show in its seventh season is a big risk, perhaps one of the biggest swings of the fall TV season. Why do this now? Was this always your plan?
Kitsis: We were coming from Lost and Lost was six years and that just felt really perfect. It felt like that was the plan because six felt like what a show ran.
Horowitz: It's not like we ever put a number on it.
Source
And season six is when initial contracts and licensing fees are renegotiated …
Kitsis: We always planned for six years. You look at Marvel and these reboots we were like, "Why can't fairy tales be rebooted? Why can't we be the new Wonderful World of Disney?" Because I love these stories. If we do one version of Cinderella, why can't we do another one seven years later? So for us, it's an experiment but it's one ABC is allowing us to do and that is more exciting than losing half your cast and trying to pretend like we didn't and then say, "Hey it's still Laverne & Shirley, it's just we're in L.A. …"
Horowitz: Because the show deals with magic, it allows so many avenues to reinvent things but also to not abandon what we have done. It has allowed us this great freedom of taking characters that we have loved for years, to keep some of them and then to bring in new ones and mix it up and keep the essence and the spirit of the show alive but go in a new direction. It has been creatively invigorating for us, the writers, the cast and the crew. Everybody is excited; it's a fun, new adventure.
Kitsis: The reason we kept going was because it was still fun and we still enjoyed the world. We were happy to put the other story to bed and write to a finale but then it was still fun to think of, "What if they were in Seattle? And what if this character was this? And what if Henry met a new Cinderella?" We have children now that we actually watch the show with and it feels like there has to be one place where people can go that it's unabashedly hopeful. We're not trying to be cable; we're not trying to be anything other than a show you should watch with your kid. The message at the end is we may go dark but we are never bleak and there is always light at the end of the tunnel. It's just it may take four episodes whereas our audience wants it to be one act.
Horowitz: The show always started with this idea about being hopeful and optimistic. And that oddly felt like the one area in television that wasn't being serviced. That was the genesis of what Once would be. With Lost, in that third season when things were really bleak for all the characters, writing that episode where they found hope made us really realize how powerful a thing that was to make hope a central idea and concept.
As we cover more and more dramas that have an underlying political message in the Trump era — like Scandal ditching a story about Russians hacking the election because that actually happened and the overall concept of Designated Survivor, as well as just the daily news cycle, hope isn't something you see a lot of right now. Your show is very much an alternative to that.
Kitsis: Yes! The show is about the thing we love best about the world: there is unity if we find it and you have to work at it. Once is a show for everyone. And you're right, I am so bombarded by a day-to-day news cycle that is changing and the polarization of the country. You just want a place where everyone says at the end of the day don't we all want the same things? And that is to be happy and maybe there's a better way to get to it.
Horowitz: On a very basic level, the show says if the Evil Queen — the worst person in all of literature and storytelling — can find hope and happiness and goodness in her, and heal her heart, maybe everyone can. It's political without being political. We just want to find that in the world.
Kitsis: We never try to do black and white because the world isn't black and white. A villain can be a hero and a hero can be a villain. To us, the happy endings are the things you always have to fight for. We still love doing this but it was time to move forward. We don't ever want to repeat ourselves because it gets boring. It's a huge roll of the dice but I'd rather do that than just sit comfortably and not be excited about what I do.
Horowitz: We'd rather put a bow on the stories for some of these characters and try something new than just try to drag out their stories. And it felt like we had reached that point where we couldn't drag it out more; we wanted to put the bow on it, send them off in a hopefully beautiful way for the audience and then do something new.
As anthologies continue to become a small-screen staple, you guys have said that there are different multiple books in the Once universe. Is there an opportunity to do a different story each year?
Horowitz: The business has changed in a way in how people are consuming television and how they're consuming stories. Stranger Things, which is brilliant, is a show that when it drops, you're watching a multi-episode movie. You wait the whole year wondering what they're going to do in season two.
Kitsis: What's the sequel?
Horowitz: I love that in their marketing — where it's like Stranger Things II — they're doing it like a movie sequel from the 1980s. Now when we're doing 22 episodes a season, it's a different approach because we are still on every week. We have to walk the line of letting the audience live with these characters who are coming into their homes each week and being part of a bigger story but then also the individual episode stories. With this show, each season is about a new adventure and this new world — and finding a way to balance that with what's happening to these characters on an emotional level — that's how we hopefully can keep our audience invested and hopefully they'll come with us to any kind of crazy place. But it is unusual seeing how TV has changed over the course of our career. And one [formula] isn't better than the other.
So what's a potential season eight? Do Andrew J. West and Dania Ramirez come back or is it a new location again?
Horowitz: Should we be lucky enough to continue on to season eight and beyond, yes, Andrew and Dania, their story — if they survive the season! [laughing] — it would continue on as well. And as would any of our legacy characters.
Kitsis: We grew up Star Wars, Indiana Jones and James Bond geeks and the thing that people love most about our show are these characters. We're going to go to Neverland, Wonderland and then you can take them [somewhere else], which is much more of a movie thing. But then we have to combine that with the 22 episodes.
Horowitz: The Indiana Jones model is very apt. In the first movie he's with Marian, going after the ark. And then you drop him in with Short Round and then he's with his dad. If you think of those as seasons of television, you can see multiple stories with the same character. And then wonder where the next adventure is going to take you. That's the fun for us as writers is each season: seeing where the adventure going to take us.
And you did it in reverse, where you started with Young Indy — as in Henry as a kid.
Horowitz: Exactly!
Kitsis: Yes! We just need to find the temple!
The show is exploring different versions of Cinderella as the character exists in, as you've mentioned, multiple locations. That's a big gamble. How did Disney respond to the idea?
Horowitz: When we pitched the show initially seven or eight years ago, we had to meet with the brand management people at Walt Disney. We have created a Disney cul-de-sac and a place where you can take these characters, bring them in, do different things with them — not mess with the canon of the larger corporate Disney and what these characters are — but it can play in concert with that and have some fun and do different things that feel a little different. There's always been this great license to experiment and they have given us great freedom to do that and to take risks. Is this going to work? We don't know if it will work. We didn't know if it would work when we put a sword in Snow White's hands in the first season, which had never been done before. You don't know.
Kitsis: You can't know if you play it safe. Around season three we started talking to ABC, saying if this show is going on, we feel like after season six, it's a reboot. We said this shouldn't be a 10-year show we're dragging out where Jared Gilmore is 40 years old. We'd been talking to ABC about this idea for three years. And they know this is a risk.
Horowitz: When we actually got down to it last season and sat down with [ABC Entertainment president] Channing Dungey and ABC Studios' Patrick Moran and talked about what we wanted to do and they were right there saying let's take the risk and let's be bold with what the show is. Because if you roll the dice, you can lose — but you can also win if you allow the show to continue and grow and become something new.
Kitsis: And what we meant with the line was that there are different versions of all fairy tales, be it in Germany and Italy and France. But one of the things that I find interesting about this show is how international it is.
So six more seasons?
Horowitz: Right! Exactly!
Is that the plan for this Once 2.0?
Kitsis: I will be honest with you — right now it's just getting the plane up in the air.
How much does it feel like season one right now?
Kitsis: A hundred percent. We had to really change our thinking because once you get to season six there is an unspoken rhythm between everybody. Now we're back to like, "What does this character wear? What is this set? What does this story do?"
Horowitz: Six years into a show you're encumbered, for better or for worse, by everything that has come before — from wardrobe choices to story choices. Finding this way to rejigger the show has freed everyone from wardrobe to the actors to the writers to do the same show but do it a little differently.
You're moving to Fridays at 8 p.m. this season. Have you thought about leaning into the whole Wonderful World of Disney brand as you look at telling these new chapters?
Kitsis: We have always approached the show with the respect of Wonderful World of Disney. We knew we had their Sunday at 8 p.m. slot so we always carried that on. We are excited about Friday because that's the new Sunday in the sense that a lot of our audience watches the show as a family and they are home Friday. And Sunday now is a different world than it was six years ago. Now, you can watch with your kids before their bed time. And a lot of great genre shows do well there.
Horowitz: What we hope we can do is make Once Upon a Time its own brand that fits in the Disney culture that says when you see Once Upon a Time, you're going to get this kind of feeling. And whether it's with some of the characters you know or new characters, this is the vibe of the show and hopefully it'll continue on as long as people like it.
Once Upon a Time returns Friday, Oct. 6 at 8 p.m. on ABC. Will you be watching?

The Weekend Warrior 9/4/20 – TENET! MULAN! I’M THINKING OF ENDING THINGS (but now that I’ve seen Tenet and Mulan, I’m better)… and More!
It’s Labor Day weekend… it is, isn’t it? I can’t even remember what day of the week it is anymore, and it looks like movie theaters across the country are generally all reopened except for a few specific areas. While theaters seem to be playing a variety of old and new movies – and Chadwick Boseman’s breakout 42, in which he plays Jackie Robinson, will be shown in 300 AMC theaters starting Thursday -- it still feels like we’re not quite where we should be. That said, only three states remain fully closed as far as movie theaters go: New York (eff you, Cuomo!), North Carolina and New Mexico. California is slowly rolling out movie theaters reopening in certain sections but not in L.A. or San Francisco just yet. Honestly, I’m having a rough week, and I’ll be surprised if I even get through half the movies that I have seen and planned to review, let alone everything else I have to do.
Finally! The movie that’s looking to be one of the most controversial movies of the summer, if not the year, comes to the United States. Of course, I’m talking about Christopher Nolan’s TENET (Warner Bros.), his tribute to James Bond movies with John David Washington (BlacKkKlansman) playing a super-spy (of sorts) who teams with Robert Pattinson to perform intricate heists on a mission to find out who has discovered bullets that travel backwards through time and brought them back into our time. Also starring Elizabeth Debicki and Kenneth Branagh, the movie has received mixed to positive reviews with about 76% on Rotten Tomatoes. You can read my full review right here and a second technical review here.
Right now, it looks like Tenet is going to be playing in roughly 3,000 theaters over Labor Day weekend with only a few states fully closed including my own (New York), as well as North Carolina and New Mexico. A few other states like New Jersey and Maryland are reopening but it may be too late to get Tenet in there. California has a few areas open but not Los Angeles or San Francisco.
Although I’m hesitant at making any predictions right now or doing a full-blown analysis – there so many unknowns in a pandemic -- I think a four-day opening of somewhere between $25 and 28 million should be possible even with limited seating in most theaters that have reopened. I think people are ready to go back to theaters despite the negative narrative created by certain irresponsible film critics who seem to care more about their own personal health than that of the industry that has allowed them to pay rent and live large for years.
Another movie that I’ve been looking forward to and actually my most anticipated movie of the year is Disney’s live action remake of their animated classic, MULAN, this one directed by one of my favorite filmmakers, Niki Caro of Whale Rider fame. I cannot tell you how excited I was to finally see this movie after being invited to a press screen back in March, and then have it systematically cancelled as everything else started shutting down. Fortunately, I got a screener and while not my favorite way to watch a movie, I absolutely LOVED IT!
It stars Yifei Liu as the title character, made famous in the 1998 Disney animated movie, and it follows a similar story of a teen girl who steals her father’s sword and armor and pretends to be a man to join the Imperial Army under secrecy. There are definitely major changes in Caro’s version, most notably the lack of songs and no sign of Mushu, the adorable dragon voiced by Eddie Murphy. This is also not meant for small children, because it’s PG-13 not because it has anything terrible like someone waving genitals or swearing but because some of the action does get intense without much blood or anything terrible. I mean, this is definitely a SOFT PG-13, if that’s even a thing.
The movie is gorgeous and in the vein of movies I love like Zhang Yimou’s Hero and Ang Lee’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and it’s even exec. produced by Bill Kong, who produced many of those films. The point is that I love these kinds of movies, plus I’ve long been a fan of Caro’s, and everything just comes together beautifully from the performance by Yifei Liu to the fantastic characters around her, including ones played by Jet Li and Donnie Yen (reuniting from Hero!), as well as an amazing witch played by the indelible Ms. Gong Li, who is also terrific. Sure, there’s a few issues with the dialogue, but this is not a kiddie movie, as much as it’s something on par with the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie, and I just love all of the decision Caro and her all-Asian cast make in telling this story in a new way. I particularly liked how the film followed Chinese traditions and dealt with things like “chi,” but as with the animated film, the stuff in the army
On top of the amazing martial arts fights, there are also some terrific battle scene that would do Braveheart proud, and it’s all pulled together by Harry Gregson-Williams’ score, which may be one of my favorite pieces of music this year. Definitely a score I’ll be buying since it brings so much excitement and emotion to every scene, but that’s just as much a credit to Ms. Caro and her fantastic cast, who in a couple scenes, particularly between Liu and Li, had me tearing up almost as much as every single time I’ve watched Caro’s debut, Whale Rider.
I’m sure that fans of the animated movie (which I only saw for the first time earlier this year) will have different expectations, but you can’t fault Disney for being a little bit concerned and undeservedly dumping it to the Disney+ streaming service (which you can watch it at a premium of $29.95) rather than giving it the theatrical release it truly deserved. Honestly, if for some strange reason, Disney decides to play it in a bunch of theaters once they’re fully open, I would not hesitate to watch this again in what I consider a much-better environment for a movie which is likely to end up in my top 10 for year. It’s probably my favorite straight-up Disney movie (not including Pixar or Marvel) since maybe Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella, although I kind of enjoyed Mary Poppins Returns, too.
I also have a crafts review of Mulan over at Below the Line, so check that out!
While I’ve generally been mixed on Charlie Kaufman’s movies that he directed himself, I couldn’t NOT watch I’M THINKING OF ENDING THINGS, his new movie on Netflix, starring Jessie Buckley and Jesse Plemons as a young couple going to visit his parents, played by Toni Collette and David Thewlis. At first, it looks like they’ll get stuck in a snowstorm, but then they get there and then they leave and once again get stuck in a snowtorm. No, this isn’t Centigrade 2, but actually something far FAR worse, to the point where I’m not even sure where to begin.
It starts with Buckley’s “Young woman” – yes, Kaufman doesn’t even bother giving her a name – being picked up by her boyfriend Jake (Plemons) before the long ride through the snow to his parent’s house. The whole time, we hear her inner thoughts about wanting to break up with Jake for one or reason or another, her thoughts always been interrupted by Jake making a statement that seems out of the blue. When they get to his parents’ farm in the middle of nowhere, things start to get weird, and I don’t want to go into too many details because if you read my review and decide to sit through it anyway, then it’s your own fault.
Apparently, this was loosely based on a book of the same name by Iain Reid, but it was adapted by the guy who wrote Adaptation, so Kaufman pretty much just went off and did his own thing based on Reid’s general premise. What I find particularly weird is that some of the early reviews talked about this movie as if it was a horror movie, but I just don’t see that at all. It’s just a really dry and weird comedy that doesn’t really take off. While parts of it remind me of the comics work of Daniel Clowes (Ghost World), who I genuinely love, other parts just get so weird, and at times, it reminded me of David Lynch’s Eraserhead or M. Night Shyamalan’s The Visit, but only because there are so many WTF moments that you wonder what the actors must have thought while they were doing what Kaufman told them to do. Again, I’m not going to ruin the experience of being thoroughly confounded by some of the weirder moments but after Buckley and Plemons leave the farmhouse, they’re back driving through the snow and having far more intelligent conversations about such mundane topics. At one point, I thought, “This movie must be over soon, right?” and I checked, and there were 43 more minutes to go. That’s when I went from angry to outright ballistic, because I knew that there were so many other things I could be doing than listening to all the talking, talking, talking… They eventually arrive at an abandoned school and go there for shelter, and I was like, “Oh, good, now we get to the horror stuff.” Nope.
I’m Thinking of Ending Things is the perfect movie for the scant few that raved about Darren Aronofsky’s mother!, or those who consider Holy Rollers a masterpiece of the highest order. Awful, aggravating and almost unwatchable at times, I’d only recommend Kaufman’s movie to people as a practical joke. Nah, I’m not that mean. It’ll be on Netflix tomorrow. Good luck with it.
Filmmaker and Rooney* frontman Robert Schwartzman directs his third feature, the comedy THE “ARGUMENT” (Gravitas Ventures), which takes the simple idea of a cocktail party and turns it into a riotous and sometimes strange comedy of errors, of sorts.
Dan Fogler and Emma Bell play couple Jack and Lisa, he a writer, her an actress, who have been together for some time, and Jack is ready to pop the question. After the final of a stageplay Lisa is co-starring in, Jack throws a cocktail party at which he’s gonna propose. He invites over his agent Danny Pudi from Community) and his wife Sarah (Maggie Q) but Lisa has invited her amorous co-star Paul (Tyler James Williams from Everybody Hates Chris all grown up!), who brought his own bubbly girlfriend Trina (Cleopatra Coleman). As Trina starts drinking, thing just get worse and worse, and it inevitably turns into a full- on fight between Jack and Lisa aka the “argument” of the title. Jack is convinced that if they have a do-over on the night, they can prove who is right.
Oh, yeah. That couldn’t possibly work, right? Well, I’m not going to spoil it, but the one do-over turns into several, which turns into Jack trying to script the perfect cocktail party with the six of them … or rather five after Maggie Q’s character quits in a hilarious huff where she does impressions of the other five. (I’ve always found Maggie to be hilarious from talking to her years ago, and it’s great that her comic skills are finally being used, along with her beauty.) Eventually, Jack brings in actors to play each of them and perform the script he’s written so they can all sit back and figure out where things went wrong. Honestly, The “Argument” is more like the Charlie Kaufman movies I liked (such as Adaptation), and the movie has a vibe a lot like the play God of Carnage, which Roman Polanski adapted into a movie that nobody saw and few gave a fair shake. Also reminded me of Ike Barinholtz’s The Oath, which I quite enjoyed. The main leads are great, but I gotta give additional kudos to Maggie and Cleopatra Coleman, who gives a surprisingly layered performance as possibly the first ditzy African-American not-blonde “blonde” in movie history?
Although Schwartzman didn’t write this movie – it’s written by Zac Sanford who made The Chumscrubber -- he does a great job using his talented cast to throw many surprises at the viewer, and I was laughing quite hardily as the movie went on, because I really enjoyed the characters portrayed not just by the main six but also the actors playing the actors. Yeah, I know it might get confusing but at least this doesn’t have time travel, so if you want a fun and unexpectedly clever dark comedy, do check out The “Argument” which will be in theaters and On Demand, and apparently, you can even order it bundled with WINE?!?!? (*And you can also check out Rooney on Spotify!)
Another really nice surprise this week was Jeff Barnaby’s apocalyptic horror film BLOOD QUANTUM (Shudder/RLJEFilms), which was released on VOD, Digital HD, DVD and Blu-Ray earlier this week but is also on the awesome horror streamer, Shudder, I guess right now? It involves a community of indigenous people in the reserve Red Crow who face the undead when an infection hits the village through a bunch of animals who come back to life and then infect the humans. The movie starts on the first night of this plague and then cuts forward six months when the people of Red Crow have shut themselves off from the rest of the world with the hopes of keeping those still alive uninfected from the hordes of “Zeds” outside their gates.
I’m a little bummed I didn’t have press notes for this movie because there are so many great characters and performances, but it was hard to keep track of them without a scorecard. It does star Michael Greyeyes from Fear the Walking Dead, as well as Forrest Godluck (The Revenant), Kiowa Gordon and Elle-Máijá Tailfeatures, but other than Greeneyes, who plays the sherriff trying to keep his family safe, I could barely keep track of the characters or figure out who played them, and that’s a shame.
I generally liked the recent Train to Busan: Peninsula but Blood Quantum works just as little bit better, mainly from the interaction of the characters in a world full of sex and drugs and gore galore where you never who is gonna get killed but for the most part, they’re likely to go in a way that involves blood that pours like a waterfall. You add to the quick pace of Barnaby’s direction the amazing score that almost sounds like Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, and you have a movie that makes you realize that Barnaby has made a film that perfectly captures the spirit and feel of John Carpenter’s best work.
I actually watched John Leguizamo’s feature film directorial debut CRITICAL THINKING (Vertical Entertainment), way back in March, literally my very last press screening before movie theaters shut down, little realizing that it would be the last press screening for six months! It’s written by Dito Montiel, who I’ve generally been mixed on, and it’s based on a true story from 1998 where a Miami teacher, played by Leguizamo, tries to save a group of Latino and Black teenagers from the inevitable drugs and crime that kids from the underserved ghetto usually get into by teaching them chess and getting them all the way to the National Chess Championship. I didn’t get to rewatch it to write any sort of intelligent review, but as you can imagine, it has a Mr. Holland’s Opus or Dead Poet’s Society feel, but mixed with the little-seen Disney movie, Queen of Katwe, which I generally enjoyed much more. I do think Leguizamo did a pretty decent job with his first feature as a director and maybe if the crazy early days of COVID weren’t distracting me so much, maybe I would have enjoyed it more. This is a movie that I need to rewatch with a better head on my shoulders.
Tyler Norwood’s doc ROBIN’S WISH (Vertical) takes a look at the last years of comedian and actor Robin Williams, who died from suicide in August 2014 at the age of 63. To everyone who knew him, from close acquaintances to fans, it was a mystery why Williams would take his own life with things going so well in his marriage to Susan Schneider. After his death, the autopsy showed that he was afflicted by undiagnosed diffuse Lewy body dementia, and apparently, that was enough to do his head in to the point where suicide seemed like the only solution.
This is a very different than the equally good Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind, because it does focus so much on Williams’ last years and his relationship with Schneider, who plays a much bigger role in this movie with in-depth and intimate moments. It also does a good job talking to Williams’ neighbors in Marin County, who laud the comedian’s commitment to entertaining those in the community. It also interviews Shawn Levy from the Night at the Museum movies, who talks about how Williams wouldn’t let anyone around him know what was going on, maybe because he didn’t really know himself.
Williams’ death was tragic but even moreso when you realize what he must have been going through, and the only thing else I will say is that the notably teary documentary Dear Zachary may finally have some competition as the most tear-inducing real-life film you ever watch. Even so, it’s wonderful and does as great job shining a light on how hard something like dementia hits people when they least expect it. (Also, the score and cinematography for the film are fabulous at provoking those sorrowful emotions even more.)
Arthur Jones’ doc FEELS GOOD MAN is available right now On Demand via the Fantasia Film Festival and will be available via other film festivals, like Oxford Film Festival, starting Friday. (It will also be in theaters, including Oxford’s drive-in!) The movie follows the journey of comics artist Matt Furie, who drew a comic called “Boys Club” that featured a strange frog character named Pepe, who I never heard of, but apparently, the odd underground comic character went from being a popular meme to becoming a symbol of the alt-right. It sounds pretty crazy, but it is an absolutely crazy story as Furie sees his lovable and peaceful slacker character get out from under his control as right wing kooks like Alex Jones from InfoWars gloms onto him.
At first, I wasn’t sure if I’d find this as interesting as the HBO doc, Beware the Slenderman (which I also happened to see at Fantasia a few years ago), but the way that Jones tells Furie and Pepe’s story is really quite compelling, especially as he (and we) watch the craziness surrounding his character unfold, and Pepe becomes less and less like something he wanted to be associated with. (Furie and his wife spent thousands of their own money-making Pepe T-shirts and merch only to have to destroy it all once Furie gets pegged as the creator of a hate image. I mean, holy shit, this thing gets ugly!)
Apparently, Feels Good Man won an “Emerging Filmmaker” Jury Award at Sundance, and it’s well-deserved. I’d recommend the movie to anyone who likes comics or politics and doesn’t mind when the two things collide.
There are a few other movies that I want to write about that I didn’t have time to watch despite having screeners and who knows, maybe I can watch them over this longer weekend if things aren’t too crazy screener-wise. (I lost quite a bit of time with my trip to Connecticut to see Tenet, unfortunately.)
First, there’s Julius Berg’s THE OWNERS (RLJEFilms), which stars Maisie Williams from Game of Thrones and Sylvester McCoy aka Doctor Who #6 (I think?). It’s about a group of friends who want to break into an empty house in which there’s a safe full of money, but when the elderly couple (including McCoy) return home early, they turn the tables in a deadly game of cat and mouse. Yeah, it does sound like it could be fun, and it’ll be in select theaters, On Demand and digital this Friday.
Also out on Digital, as well as DVD, Blu-Ray this week is the anime CHILDREN OF THE SEA (Shout! Factory/GKids) from director Ayumu Watanabe and STUDIO4ºC who made Mind Game and Tekkonkinkreet. It’s about a young girl named Ruka whose father works at an aquarium where she comes across two mysterious boys who were raised by dugongs (a type of sea cow) so they’re very familiar and acclimated to water, to the point where they have to be in or near it at all times, kind of like Aquaman. I did watch a little bit of this, and I do have to say that it looks gorgeous, definitely more photo-realistic than the work of Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli. I’m sure I’ll get around to watch the rest of it because I do enjoy well-made anime -- Weathering With You and Ride Your Wave are likely to be in my year-end Top 25, for instance – so hopefully, fans of anime and fantsy will check it out.
On Amazon Prime this Friday is Eric Merola’s doc THE ANDORRA HUSTLE, which look at the country of Andorra, located between France and Spain in the Pyrenees mountains, holding a population of 80,000 people who find themselves at the center of one of the most convoluted robberies in history in 2015 when a the private bank Banca Privada d’Andorra was shut down by the government to destroy the Catalonian Independence Movement, leaving dozens of innocent civilians facing jail time for laundering money after losing their life savings.
A couple prominent science fiction series premiere this weekend, including the Ridley Scott-produced Raised by Wolves on HBO Max and Away, starring Hillary Swank on Netflix. Someday, I hope to have
There’s a lot of other stuff that I didn’t have to watch or even think about it, so yeah, this is a little bit of a “lite edition” of the Weekend Warrior, so I apologize. Hopefully, I’ll be able to do better next week.
By the way, if you read this week’s column and have bothered to read this far down, feel free to drop me some thoughts at Edward dot Douglas at Gmail dot Com or drop me a note or tweet on Twitter. I love hearing from readers … honest!

Kenneth Branagh: 'I want you to smell the steam of the Orient Express'
A new article about Murder on the Orient Express from The Guardian
The actor-director’s latest film, Murder on the Orient Express, boasts a stellar cast, including Branagh himself as Poirot. He discusses magnificent moustaches, moral brooding and the passion of Agatha Christie
“Women in wild places and mental instability run right through things, don’t they?” says Kenneth Branagh, leaning forward, earnestly. “She’s very, very sensitive, and I see the ghost of her as a heroine in what she writes, in terms of keeping body and soul together, and of being an adventurer.”
He’s talking about Agatha Christie, and giving a reading of the detective novelist’s fiction that is a long way from the more traditional view of her as a comfy West Country matriarch who churned out mysteries to support her family. “I think people have been pretty tough on her,” he adds. “They’re suspicious of the volume of her output. She herself admitted that sometimes she wasn’t proud of a book when she had finished it.
“Personally I admire the prolific nature of what she does … her ability to grab the audience’s attention is really striking. The surface of what she writes has led people to dismiss her as a second-rater. But I think she is far more than that.”
Branagh is talking about Christie as he gets ready to unveil his big-screen versionof her classic Murder on the Orient Express (the first cinematic interpretation since 1974), her story of a group of passengers and a dead body trapped in a luxurious train in a snow storm. He stars as the legendary Belgian detective Hercule Poirot.
“I think people often feel this about Shakespeare – they’re annoyed by his bourgeois credentials,” he says.
“He retires at the normal age, goes back to Stratford, buys houses, gets involved in disputes about rent. It feels as though there’s a sort of middle manager quality in there; he was a businessman, a shareholder, yet he wrote all these plays. That makes people suspicious.
“With Christie, people essentially have her down as a sort of Miss Marple – a sexless, removed, bookish, woolly, very English sort of individual. And they are not aware of the intrepid, pioneering, passionate woman that she was.”
The lineaments of her life back this view. Christie had such a desire to travel – and to keep her first husband, the dashing Archie Christie, happy – that she set off on a year of travel with him in 1924, leaving her daughter Rosalind at home with her mother. She left Rosalind again when she famously vanished for 11 days after discovering Archie was having an affair; she underwent psychiatric treatment in the wake of the incident. After their divorce, she travelled alone on the Orient Express, to Istanbul and then on to Damascus and Baghdad. Her family worried about her on the trip but for her it was a way of discovering new worlds – and, coincidentally, a new companion in life since she met her second husband, Max Mallowan, on a dig in Ur. Despite her writing commitments, she worked alongside him, often in difficult conditions and exotic locations.
Branagh and I talk at Twickenham Studios. He is tired because of an exhausting schedule which is whisking him around the world, but he’s here to put the finishing touches to his film, which boasts an all-star cast: Judi Dench, Michelle Pfeiffer, Daisy Ridley, Olivia Colman, Penélope Cruz, Johnny Depp, Derek Jacobi, Sergei Polunin …
youtube
The way the trailer is framed, with captions that reveal the type of character each star is playing, takes both the film and its director back to his youth in the 1970s and early 80s, when the posters for movies such as The Towering Inferno and indeed Sidney Lumet’s 1974 version of Murder on the Orient Express, starring Albert Finney as Poirot, were plastered across the streets of Branagh’s home town of Reading. To the boy who had moved there at the age of nine from his native Belfast, they represented a sense of possibility. “My first encounter was with their sense of glamour,” he says. “I was pretty intrigued by all the names on those posters.”
This liking for good performers coming together to make popular entertainment is perhaps what links the two contrasting sides of Branagh’s current career. There is the actor and director who is regarded as one of the best of his age; an eminent Shakespearean, the first man to film Henry V since Olivier, a talent who can gather a top-flight company of actors to perform a season in the West End which included heavy-weight productions of The Winter’s Tale and The Entertainer. Then there is the Hollywood film director, best known for the comic-book movie, Thor. And Cinderella. He grins when I point out the strange collision between Hollywood and serious stage productions.
“No one, quite frankly, is more surprised than me that I have been allowed to get away with it,” he says. “I had not anticipated or planned for suddenly finding myself in this studio groove. It is unusual, I must say. But it’s fun.”
Shot on 70mm film, his version of Murder on the Orient Express gleams as the camera dwells on the crisp table linen, the polished wood and the glistening glasses. “I wanted you to feel the snow and smell the steam – I wanted to have all the advantages of classic material and none of the disadvantages of over-familiarity,” he says.
For Christie fans, there are some changes – to characters, to locations, to motivation – that may surprise. But all the essential ingredients are faithfully reproduced, and Branagh has added considerable depth to his portrayal of Poirot, making him more active, more passionate and more lonely. “The screenplay caught a hurt and a more tangible isolation in Poirot,” Branagh explains. “There is a kind of vulnerability about this man who appears in The Mysterious Affair at Styles with a touching gratitude to England for looking after Belgian refugees. There’s the sense of someone who has already felt the bruises of the world.”
Did he not feel any trepidation about taking on a character who has already been portrayed by 20 actors, including Orson Welles, Peter Ustinov and, on TV, David Suchet? “It’s a lot isn’t it?” says Branagh with that disarming smile. “I guess that’s where my thickish skin comes into it. You do understand that the reason so many people have played him is because he’s a fantastic character.”
He stopped watching other incarnations when he knew he was about to deliver his own (“I wouldn’t want to get caught copying the other boys”), but recognises the various ways that the detective has burrowed into the collective consciousness. “With the amount of source material in the novels every actor is going to bring something unique and unusual, in the same way as would happen with a famous classical part. David Suchet is a fantastic Poirot, so is Finney and John Moffatt on the radio is excellent.”
Discussion about his own characterisation will, I suspect, be dominated by conversations about his moustache – grey and flourishing and twinned with a natty beard. “We probably spent about nine months on it. We started with something thinner than Charlie Chaplin’s, then something that went up, that went down. We looked at famous moustaches in movies and paintings. The luxury as an actor – and I had this before when I was playing Wallander – is that you can go back to the books and trawl for details.
“I loved Christie’s phrasing – ‘the most magnificent moustaches in England’ – and I enjoyed the fact that the risk you were taking was that you would potentially produce the impact that the moustache has on characters in the novels, who often dismiss or ridicule Poirot, or are embarrassed by him.”
That mention of Wallander – whom Branagh portrayed in the British television adaptation of Henning Mankell’s detective books, feels significant. Christie wrote Murder on the Orient Express in 1933, on an archaeological dig at Arpachiyah in Iraq. Published the following year, it was rapturously received, though the audacity of its plot caused Raymond Chandler to remark that it was “guaranteed to knock the keenest mind for a loop. Only a half-wit could guess it.”
His damning view of the British golden age detective novel – “futzing around with timetables and bits of charred paper and who trampled the jolly old flowering arbutus under the library window” – and his preference for psychologically based novels where a “perfunctory mystery element [is] dropped in like the olive in a martini” underlines the division in the thriller market that has existed ever since.
But the dichotomy between the advocates of clever plotting and the lovers of a story that reveals a deeper truth about society or character is misleading when applied to Christie. She may write in simple sentences, but it is the way she imagines character that has ensured the longevity of her books.
Branagh, a fan of both schools of thriller, points out that there is not so much difference between them. “I enjoyed the meditative qualities of what the Wallander novels were doing. But there’s quite a moral brood in Murder on the Orient Express as well.
“There are not only the questions of who did it, how did they do it, and why, but also the question of what now represents justice. And that issue of what justice is – when concerning crimes born out of revenge – goes quite deep in analysing whether an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth ultimately is a way to order civilised behaviour.”
He worked on the film at the same time as he was directing Hamlet, starring Tom Hiddleston, as a fund-raiser for Rada. “Curiously, both stories seem to me to contain the poison of deep grief, and that idea of loss and the death of innocence. I think there is a passionate depth to Christie, even though she sometimes said her writing is merely entertainment.”
Sensing that darkness beneath the surface sheen means that he has been anxious to avoid what he calls “heritage movie-making”. “I wanted to remove excessive theatricality – a sense of the sort of fluting, shrill shriek, of so called ‘larger than life’ characters. I wanted to feel that people were talking not much louder than we are now.”
Assembling his cast – consisting of old friends and colleagues and young talent – was a moment to remember.
“When they all met for the first time, they were very shy and excitable. And one of the things I was determined to do was to try to capture that energy as soon as possible. I wanted a quiver of real guilt and uncertainty when they are interviewed by Poirot, to feel as if they were people for whom the prospect of him getting it wrong and accusing them was a matter of life and death.”
Murder on the Orient Express is in cinemas from 3 November.

OUAT 7x01 Thoughts
Yes, the rumors are true. I finally watched the season 7 premiere. I was gonna put “Quick Thoughts” in the title, but I suspect there will be nothing quick about my thoughts since I have a lot of them.
First off, though, I had a hard time following the story for the first few minutes. The first couple of times they switched between times and realms and POVs. And I’ve been a pretty intense viewer for the past year and a half bar a couple of months. (Since I haven’t watched since the season 6 finale.) So if I was having trouble, I can’t imagine what watching is like for the casual viewer. They’ve replaced half the cast with all new faces plus they’re switching between like two timelines which could look like four timelines due to the new cast members. It’s a bold move, I’ll give the writers that.
In the real world, I also don’t really think that Henry has grown up yet or that he has a child of his own. And if he does, then there’s probably more truth to Henry having grown up without either of his mothers than I like to think about. It could also explain why Roni hasn’t aged a day since we last saw her as Regina. Well, I do think there’s some truth to Henry maybe not having grown up with his mothers or the threat of it, but I doubt Henry was without them entirely.
The one thing I’m sure of though is that they’re still telling us the exact same story. Just a different side to or version of it. But this story is still about Emma, Regina and Henry and the people that affected their lives.
The first clue we get to that is our Henry (Jared that is, I’m gonna miss that kid) telling us that Operation Cobra has come to an end. He tells us everyone has their happy endings and yet in about the same breath he tells us that he feels like he doesn’t belong. Like he hasn’t found his story, his happy ending yet. In later episodes (I’ve been seeing gifsets not the actual show) we find out that Regina hasn’t found her happy ending either. None of that sounds right.
(x)
7x01
Yet I believe it.
But here’s the thing with that. Up until about the end of season 4, from the time his mothers put their differences aside Henry was a pretty happy kid. It’s only in season 5 that that started to really change.
We saw him never really be part of Regina’s family whenever Regina was with Robin. And we saw him sort of grind his teeth around Hook. Henry isn’t a man of many words. But Henry’s unhappiness is confirmed beyond a shadow of a doubt in 6x06.
(x)
Here, 6x06
Henry is the kind of person that If his mothers think they’re happy, he’s happy for them. Didn’t used to be that way. 10-year old Henry knew what he wanted and was really adamant about getting it. No matter what it meant for his mothers.
But here, after smiling and nodding for the camera for so long, he’s clearly fed up, with Hook, and it shows. Now, it’s normal for kids to get mad at their parents every once in a while. God knows Henry’s gotten mad at both Emma and Regina at different times. Hell, sometimes at the same time. The thing is, Hook is not his parent. Not his family. And he clearly doesn’t want him to be. I think he just doesn’t know how to break that news to Emma. So he doesn’t.
The other clue as to where Henry believes he belongs is this. From 7x06 (which I haven’t seen yet but I have seen plenty of this gifset)
(x)
7x06
Henry wrote his own story. And in it he has two moms. That tells me that Henry has always known what he wanted. At some point he just stopped believing that he could get it and decided to make a new story with a new family, his own, happen elsewhere.
Henry being from a fractured family (as adult Henry was described I believe) then also makes sense, even more because of this.
(x)
5x21/5x22
Here Henry tells Violet he thinks magic has taken everything from his family and that now he believes it’s going to tear his parents apart. Coincidentally, by Rumple’s hand (So not a coincidence, since I think he was actually the culprit along with Cora) Something Henry ends up trying to do everything in his power to keep from happening. Bottom line: I don’t think it worked.
Henry’s family does end up fractured. Because he ends up having to move between two homes. Neither of which he feels completely at home at because each either has something too much or too little.
Emma is part of a new family with Hook and I’m guessing is spending less time with Regina. And Regina and Henry’s home probably feels empty without Emma there. Not that we ever saw Emma spend time in Regina’s home much at all. But it’s not really the place that makes the home, but the people. And Regina and Emma were together often. Wherever one was the other would usually be right behind her. With a marriage for Emma that didn’t involve Regina, I’m guessing that would have lessened.
The other thing that we get introduced to immediately is Henry’s motorcycle. And the leather that clearly goes with it.

(x)
Alice in a plaid skirt as she’s working with Rumple, OUAT, 7x01. This is how we are introduced to her.
Emma in a plaid skirt, OUAT. 2x06, I believe. Right before she meets Neal. By the way, we see Henry have Emma’s necklace/keychain swan pendant. Last we saw of it I believe Emma had it after Neal gave it back to her before he died. She never put it back on though.
(x)
Alice and Tasha, The L Word, season 5. Look at that plaid skirt. Fun fact, there’s a version of this intro that doesn’t tell us whom Alice is sitting behind yet, so the focus is actually on that skirt and then Alice’s face. Tasha isn’t in leather in the intro because she’s a soldier and that was important to the story line. But I think that when she first takes Alice for a ride (on her motorcycle! ;D) she is in leather.
For your consideration.
Now, I think Alice is Emma. Since we learn she’s already been to Wonderland that tells me she’s already met her baby’s father. And Henry is already a part of the equation. The way they openly connect Wonderland to being drugged this time though. Henry gets drugged (supposedly by Alice) and Alice tells him he has to be careful with what he drinks. The fact that Alice doesn’t want to be associated with or at least doesn’t really want to remember Wonderland also says a lot.
The way she looks adult Henry up and down though when she first sees him in Seattle, like a proud mama, really drives that home.
Also, we have confirmation that Henry’s written story took place in an existing city. Henry tells Lucy so. So not Storybrooke? Seattle, maybe? Makes sense since we’re seeing it play out in another way in Seattle all over again.
I also think August has always been Regina.
The other thing is, in Henry and Jacinda’s dynamic, I think that Henry represents Emma and Jacinda is Regina. Which is really throwing me off because in most of the first 6 seasons Emma was Cinderella. It’s only in like 6x03 that they tell us that the story we think we know isn’t the real one. That whom we think is the Evil stepsister really isn’t. Oy, this show. You need to have gone to University to get it probably. (That’s a comedic expression in my country. But anyway).
Another fun fact, OUAT might not have a Tasha, but it did have a Sasha. Sasha Winter. An 8 year old girl whose mother looked for her after giving her up and when she found her took a picture of her from a distance. So I’m guessing she was a stand-in for Henry. I don’t care if I’m stretching. If the shoe fits...
Now remember, August took Emma to a well in season one, one that could help something that was lost return. Then Henry found his book again. Of course August was the one who took it in the first place...
Another important thing to know is that Jacinda’s name is a variation of “hyacinth”, which I think is the flower we see grow in the end scene after Jacinda threw a quarter in the well. And I think the flowers Henry tries to take to his wife’s grave. Probably because some part of him remembers they mean something to her. The hyacinth is actually also related to the Lily flower. Which for me confirms that Jacinda is Regina. Since I believe Lily was Regina.
(x)
Lily, season 4
(x)
Jacinda, 7x01
This moment reminds me of the clock starting to tick in Storybrooke after Emma accepts the key and decides to stay for a week.
The return of hope. And how the curse continues to weaken the more Emma puts down roots. Because I think the curse was about her being separated from Henry. Losing the thing she loved most. So with every moment that she re-claims him and the hope she’d lost the power of the curse weakens.
Now we have actual roots and growth. Lucy sowing the seeds and Jacinda inspiring growth. (Regina says Jacinda inspired her to hope again). But this time I think we’re going to get more of Regina’s side of the story. And Cora’s involvement in it.
Since I think Lady Tremaine is Cora. And Drizella is Young Regina. Jacinda is Regina with Emma (in the form of Henry) and as the mom she wants to be, I think. And of course, there’s Rumple. And Alice is young Emma. So we’ll probably get more of that dynamic. And then there’s Rogers.
What else.
Lucy blatantly gives Henry the “My mom is your true love” spiel. Now, we didn’t hear Henry’s version of it to Emma, but I’m now convinced it was there. Or should have been. If Henry didn’t see it from the get-go by the end I’m sure he did.
Emma’s bug is yellow. Henry is shown to be a taxi driver of some sort? But in a black car? Does it mean Emma was a taxi driver at one point? Do career choices even matter at this point?
There’s more. The big secret spilling. Regina’s back story.
We see a different version of it. Jacinda tells adult Henry that she wishes to leave and start over with Lucy and where. When they leave Henry tells Jacinda’s stepmother where they went and that plan falls apart, even more so than it already had.
So, that tells me that Regina and Daniel’s story was probably always about Regina trying to run away with her kid, Henry Daniel Mills. And getting stopped by her mother. Stepmother? Henry truly is the heart of this show. He’s the heart of the Dark Curse, of Emma’s backstory and now it seems he was always a part of Regina’s backstory.
(x)
OUAT, 1x18
The question is, who spilled the beans? 10 year old Henry himself? Or Emma?
But the more pressing question is, did Henry get raised by either of his mothers for all of his childhood years? And if he did, did Regina’s mother play a bigger role in his life? And did she at one point try to take Henry away from Regina?
I mean, we see Regina almost destroy herself and Emma and Snow just to keep Cora away from her son. So what happened? How did this story end? Did she manage it?
Then there’s another thing.
We get information about two things. A dagger with Henry’s initials engraved on it. And about Jacinda’s father, whom she loved, being murdered by someone that wasn’t Jacinda herself.
I’ve said before that Regina murdering Henry Sr. always looked different from the rest of the Queen’s heart crush murders. In that the moment Regina pulled his heart from his chest he looked like he was dying/dead. In fact, it looked like he’d had a heart attack. Which really made me wonder if maybe Regina didn’t simply do something shocking that gave him a heart attack.
In every other scenario someone who has their heart pulled from their chest can still function until it’s squeezed to dust.
With Jacinda’s story Jacinda’s father wasn’t killed by her but by a prince. Someone she almost murders but then chooses not to. Then her stepmother kills him.
Now, who do we know with a dagger? Why, Rumple Bumple. And who legit tried to take it away from him? Cora, by any means necessary the moment she came to Storybrooke.
We also know Rumple killed someone to become the Dark One. And then, again, there’s Jacinda’s story. I feel like they go together. So who is the prince? Is it Rumple?
Then there’s Rumple and Alice and Rogers dynamic.
I simply think Rumple is Neal. Or well, I often think Henry is Neal as he was presented. But I think Rumple is actually the man Emma took it up with. Now the age difference no longer lies. When it comes to human years, that is. Alice looks like 17/18. Rumple looks like 50. Drizella looks like 25/26. Especially given her dress style and the fact that she has a corporate job. Definitely drives the whole Regina parallel home. She is Young Regina. Alice is Young Emma.
Makes me wonder if there’s truly a significant age difference between Emma and Regina. 7/8 years maybe? Like the age difference between Regina and Snow? Emma and Lily’s story tells us no. But I wonder.
I think Rogers may also be Emma? Possibly. I don’t know yet. Rogers is the one good old stepmom thanks for returning her daughter and granddaughter, which is an interesting turn of events. Since Henry gave the tip. Even if Rogers was the one to do the work of following it.
Rumple is a detective. A corrupt one at that, it seems. Really drives the whole “abusing people and possibly your wife/girlfriend/random girl off the street, but not suffering the consequences” in the real world home. It happens every day.
So far, when it comes to this premiere I thoroughly enjoyed the first 25 minutes. I was bored by the rest, except for that they finished strong with Regina, well, Roni. Lana Parrilla is still the best thing about this show. That end scene speech was everything. I like Jacinda and Lucy and though we barely saw anything of Drizella I think I already like her. That Devil Wears Prada type scene though. Perfection. Don’t really have an opinion on Tiana and Alice yet.
Also, the Belfrey Towers (Belle Free? Is that why you chose that last name, writers? I see what you did there) makes me think of Emma locked up in Evil Snow’s Tower, Belle in Regina’s Tower, Rapunzel in a Tower..., you get it.
I think I’ll continue watching, getting caught up slowly but surely. Unless I continue being bored. Then...not. But we’ll see.

Entry #001
From the Sometimes Diary of a Part Time Filmmaker
It’s been a minute, for sure, since I started writing about my own life. I love to constantly surround myself in the worlds of my screen plays, but sometimes I feel like my life isn’t worth much retelling.
I used to be one of those people who kept a Journal every day. All through High school and some college I was a faithful daily chronicler. But then I ran into some depression and that kind of soured up my drive for the journal. After coming through it, I just haven’t gotten back into the swing of things.
So, while my computer renders one of my videography projects, I have discovered a lot of thoughts about movies that need to be expressed.
Thus, I have decided to keep a Film Journal here on Tumblr and give my thoughts on new movies that I see. Who knows how often this will happen, but sometimes this girl just needs to get it out of her system.
Today’s movie of choice:
Before we start, I just need to warn everyone that I am about to compare the ever loving crap out of this movie and the latest Disney live action version. Spoiler alert: was not impressed with Disney. Sorry if that shows, but I have my reasons.
La Belle et la Bete, released in 2014, was recently added to Netflix. All I have to say is God Bless Netflix, which gives me access to foreign films that I would otherwise have NO CLUE about. Director Christophe Gans also wrote this adaptation of the beloved fairy tale, and I have to admit he did a STELLAR JOB of it. Below, I’m going to give each category a score out of 10 to help illustrate the quality of this picture.
Cinematography: 9/10
The camera work is phenomenal. After having spent my college years as a lighting technician for a television studio, I’m a bit of a sucker for good dramatic lighting. And this movie delivered in SPADES! They played a lot with the Magic Mirror motif making it more of a window than a reflection.
Acting: 7/10
Love Lea Seydoux’s sassy and brave Belle, and I felt that the performers of Belle’s family members were delightful, if a bit “Adverb Descriptive word” (especially her brothers). But in a fairytale like this, it’s completely allowed.
Production Design: 10/10 would see again
STOP READING THIS RIGHT NOW AND JUST WATCH THE TRAILER FOR THIS MOVIE. It’s flippin’ gorgeous to look at.
Think Baz Lurhman style opulence and add a touch of Disney’s Into the Woods and you’ve got this aesthetic. The amount of detail put into each set piece is exquisite, and I don’t use that word unless it is warranted.
Costume Design: 10/10 would wear again
I’M DYING OVER HERE! When I get into my Disney beef later, I will be referring to the costumes a wee bit. But look at how stunningly crafted these dresses are? And the Beast’s ensemble is so royal you’re afraid it’ll rain rubies if he brushes up against the wall.
Visual FX: 7/10
Not the greatest CGI animals I’ve ever seen, but definitely not the worst. What shortcomings I noticed were absolutely forgivable when they would cut to the next shots involving their wonderfully decorated sets. The final “battle” at the end didn’t end up as cheesy as I thought it would be considering the amount of CG used.
Orchestral Score: 7/10
Beautifully serene, creepy, and mysterious at the same time. However, I did recognize a few phrases here and there. Not that I could place where I’d heard them before, but some of it was derivative of something. Let me know if you have figured it out. It’s starting to taunt me.
Why I loved this adaptation
I’m absolute trash for the story of Beauty and the Beast. It’s been my favorite animated movie since before I can remember. I’ve read so many retellings; some of them very well done and most of them steaming piles of crap trying to capitalize on Beauty and the Beast popularity.
Each time I have experienced a new medium for my beloved fairy tale, I’m excited to see what they will add. What kinds of shading and depth can you give to this tale?
This film blew my socks off in that regard. They retold the story with characters and plot points that I had never seen used before. I’ve read books in which Belle is an only child, the youngest daughter, but never have I seen her portrayed as part of a large family. It almost seemed that she had “ugly step sisters” (even though neither of the sisters were Ugly nor Step-) who created wonderful foils to her elder brothers. A dysfunctional family, yes, and seemingly real dynamics too.
They added the dichotomy of Vice and Virtue in order to set up the final problem. Instead of a “Gaston” type villain who wants to keep Belle, or the internal struggle of Belle choosing to leave her family after seeing them again; the struggle comes from the vices of Belle’s family coming back to bite them.
Ok, now comes the part where I kind of rant. You’ve been warned.
Here are the top reasons I liked La Belle et la Bete more than Disney’s live action version.
#3 The story was more thought out and the characters’ actions made sense.
One of the nitpicks I had with Disney’s rendition was the lack of logic in their characters. The Live Action Cinderella provided some context for each characters’ actions and motivations, even the Evil Stepmother who never gets any love. I had hoped with the new one, Disney would take this opportunity to improve upon or even just supply some basic motivation that followed some logic. I am thinking specifically of the character of Belle’s father and his seemingly arbitrary choices. All under the guise of being... forgetful? Spaced out? Belle’s father in La Belle et la Bete was forced into his wrong decisions, unable to find another way.
#2 They actually did something new instead of rehashing the old.
Like I mentioned before, the way they introduced Belle as the youngest of a large family was refreshing. That she would be happier in a country existence after the luxury of city living was delightful character element that spoke to her intelligence instead of just having her nose in a book all day. Don’t get me wrong, that is one of my favorite aspects about Belle since I am a fellow bookworm. Yet, it was a nice change from the trope since there are many viewers who maybe do not pride their intelligence on their book knowledge. It made her intelligent both emotionally and intellectually. Her little sassy comments in the face of certain danger made me laugh at the brass balls this girl had. While watching Disney’s, I was so VERY disappointed that the story stuck so closely to the animated version (literally lifting 75% of the lines straight from the animated film) that I almost felt bored. Don’t get me wrong, it was still a beauty to look at, thus entertaining, but I felt like Ariel saying, “I want more!!!”
#1 with a bullet BELLE’S DRESSES.
Ok, not even just the dresses but the costumes in La Belle et la Bete had so much detail, care, and passion pumped into them. The first dresses we see Belle’s sisters, Anne and Clotilde, wearing are high fop fashion. Through the whole movie I was amazed by the sleeves. THE SLEEVES, PEOPLE! Who is fascinated by sleeves when there are so many other things to soak in? This girl right here. My issue with Disney’s version was that the costumes were fabulous... to a point. I’m a stickler for costume design rules: if you have an aesthetic you need to stick to it, otherwise they just don’t make sense. Disney suffered from a little costume schizophrenia. For example, the beginning scene had me FLABBERGASTED to see all those women and men in period French Rococo style. Even the Prince’s face painting was on point with some of those crazy masquerade parties you know the French aristocracy put on. Then we see Belle’s first costume and it’s a wonderful country bumpkin ensemble with plenty of color to call back to the animated movie. So far so good, Gaston and Lefou are looking great with their military style waistcoat and jacket outfits. I had a little trouble at first with the Beast’s costume because is was CGI and it’s really hard to animate fabric moving against a body in a seamless way. I was able to forgive that after a while though, I suppose I got used to it and moved on. BUT THEN WHAT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE THE COSTUME TO END ALL COSTUMES CAME ON SCREEN AND BEGAN TO ANNOY THE EVERY LOVING CRAP OUT OF ME! Belle’s “Pat of Butter” yellow Prom dress. There’s the Beast wearing a lovely blue waistcoat and brocade jacket complete with knee length knickers and buckled shoes. And Belle showed up in a prom dress from my high school dance. They threw “period” out the window and picked an atrocious color that was way too bright and washed out the Beast’s costume. It makes me VERY ANGRY when there is a period film and the costumes don’t stick to their aesthetic.
But in La Belle et la Bete, when they pick an aesthetic they stick to it like shine on silk. While not necessarily “period” correct, they used many elements of court dress and embellished accordingly to match the rest of the film’s components. It just MADE SENSE.
Alright, I say all that to say: Go watch this film, it is a delight for the eyes and imagination. You won’t regret the time spent in this beautiful fairy tale world.
That’s all for now!

Beauty and the Beast (2017) review
I just came from seeing the live action/ 2017 version of Beauty and the Beast. The original animated 1991 version is one of my favorite movies of all time, as well as it came out the year I was born (we’re both 26) AND the live action/2017 came out on March 17th (my birthday). However, I had been hearing that there was some concerns (the dress) and things that might not be handled well (LeFou being gay) but I still went to see if anyways.
Short Version:
I adored it. I think its probably the best live action adaptation of a Disney animated movie to date. IT FUCKING INCLUDES ALL THE SONGS FOR ONCE. Not only are they good/sound close to the original, there’s a couple original songs that also sound good and fit in the movie well.
LeFou I thought was handled well. He doesn’t die. I didn’t really pick up on the movie making fun of him/ blatantly using the trope, but I might not be the best person to pick up on it (being demisexual myself). And he gets an implied happy ending.
I’d definitely give it a chance and go see it.
Long Version (spoilers):
Plot:
The movie answers a lot of the “plot hole questions if you sit here and think about it” of the animated version without raising more of its own (like Cinderella did). Namely: age of Beast when cursed, Beast’s parents, not wondering where the royalty/castle went, and Belle’s mother. And that’s what I can pick out in one viewing.
Beast’s age: If you pay attention in the animated version, you realize that Beast was 10 to 11 years old when cursed (spell must be broken by his 21 birthday, but Lumiere in his song says “10 years we’ve been rusting”). In this version he’s clearly an adult when cursed, there is no 21 birthday limit, and the “10 years” lyric is not present in the song.
Beast’s parents: Beast is referred to as a prince in the original version, which raises the question potentially where his parents are. (If he’s a royalty prince, implies there a king vs. are we dealing with the occasional land owner referred to as prince in some countries). Beast IS a prince in this version and his parents are seen in a painting and in a flashback. Essentially his mother the queen died when he was a child, and his father the king was cruel and responsible in part for twisting the prince into the selfish/cruel person seen in the beginning of the movie. There’s also a bit of an implication that the reason the servants/etc in the castle also cursed was that they were partially responsible for not stopping the king (Mrs. Potts also outright says something about it too).
Where did the royalty/castle go: In the animated version, there’s a castle and royalty, meaning someone ruling subjects. And given the amount of time it takes Maurice/Belle to ride back and forth on horseback, the castle is reasonably close to the village. Which raised the question of how could the king/queen/prince and castle be cursed and no one wonders about it. In this version part of the Enchantress’ curse is that everyone outside the castle forgets about it and the people inside until the curse is broken. At the same time it ALSO answers the infamous Chip question. Chip is cursed as a child (and I GUESS no one ages except Beast?) and his father/Mrs. Pott’s husband was away from the castle when the curse came down and forgot about them.
Belle’s mother: OKAY. I know its somewhat Disney tradition that either one parent is gone at the start or dies in the process of the movie, but there’s NEVER been any talk of Belle’s mother before. The only time I’ve EVER seen anything on Belle’s mother is at Belle’s Storybook Cottage in Magic Kingdom (Disney World, not sure if this area is present in Disneyland). In this movie Maurice is a painter/inventor (I think) in Paris with Belle’s mother. Belle’s mother catches the Plague when Belle is an infant/newborn, and the parents agree to separate/Maurice take Belle away before the baby catches it too.
Songs:
OMGOSH. It includes the songs. It opens with the Prologue music which had me in goosebumps and most of the original opening narration (some changed) and includes almost all of the songs. I think the only ones not included were "Home" (which I remember from a cassette growing up, but I guess is from the Broadway version. But an instrumental version is in the background during the scene), and "Gaston (reprise)" also wasn’t sung.
There are also atleast three original songs and I liked them all. I thought they fit the scene and the movie. There’s one that Beast sings as Belle leaves to rescue her father that had me in fucking tears.
Now, I know the “look Disney bursting into song” is a hit or miss with some people. But I grew up with this movie. I grew up to Disney songs. I adore them. I WANT THE SONGS DAMNIT in the live action remakes, so it means ALOT to me that they’re all included AND they sound close to the original. Are they sung exactly the same? Not quite. Some points beats or pauses are different, and some have additional lyrics (Gaston and the Mob Song come to mind) but for the most part they’re good.
The Dress:
I’ve seen the dress pop up now and then among fans, almost as a controversy. The dress definitely isn’t as bad as it looks in the stills. But on the other hand, its not the exact dress from the animated movie. And *waves hand* I’m not sure how to feel about it? My personal opinion, with this being my favorite movie and wanting it to be close to the original, I would have liked a dress more like the original. And there is no opera gloves which would have liked to have seen.
What WAS an issue for me was Belle leaving to rescue her father IN THE BALL GOWN. In the animated movie she changes from the yellow ball gown to her blue every day dress. Here she literally rides out in the ball gown AND NO ONE QUESTIONS HER ABOUT IT IN ANY SUBSEQUENT SCENE.
Like Maurice: My daughter is being held by a Beast in a castle. Gaston/villagers: There’s no beast or castle, he’s crazy Belle: *shows up in beautiful rich yellow ball gown* He’s telling the truth Gaston/villagers: She’s just as crazy, lock her up to. Maurice: How did you escape!? Belle: He let me go Maurice: But how??
Gaston doesn’t question her showing up IN A BRIGHT BALL GOWN after being missing for days. The villagers don’t question her. Her FATHER who knows where she’s been and thought she was a prisoner doesn’t question her on it. It was just.... an immersion issue for me?
The only other wardrobe thing was Belle/Emma Watson frequently has the hem of one side of her dress tucked into her belt at various points (showing the under shift and petticoat like leggings) and... There’s no explanation for it? The everyday blue dress isn’t long or tight enough for be hampering her legs to warrant picking it up like that. I thought it would be used in the Belle/opening song as sort of another way she was odd, but nothing came of it (and the dress is suddenly worn right in the middle of the song) and she does it at other points in the movie.
LeFou:
Allright. So after the announcement that LeFou is gay in this movie raised a lot of concerns in the community. I’m demisexual and as soon as I read title of the announcement I literally went “please not LeFou *sees its LeFou; head smack*”. Because LeFou is already treading trope lines in the animated version and I didn’t want worse ones showing up.
Again, I’ve only seen the movie once and I have only my experiences to go on but I didn’t notice anything? The movie wasn’t making fun of him, characters in the movie weren’t making fun of him (no more than Gaston does/uses him in the original). He doesn’t die, and has a sort of implied happy ending but blink and you miss it at the end.
They actually gave LeFou more characterization/layers in this version. There’s a part where Gaston leaves Maurice tied up in the woods to be eaten by the wolves (to punish him for not giving Gaston Belle’s hand) and LeFou is already questioning him. And in “The Mob Song” one part of the additional lyrics is LeFou already wandering something to the effect of “we’re going to fight the beast, but who is the real beast” (aka questioning Gaston)
Before I get into it, one thing is: During “Gaston”, during the lyric “Nobody bites like Gaston”, LEFOU LIFTS UP HIS SHIRT AND THERE’S A BITEMARK ON HIS STOMACH. I HAVE QUESTIONS.
So spoilers for LeFou scenes.
During the scene in the tavern (”Gaston” song), LeFou sings the familiar lyric “you can ask any Tom, Dick, or Stanley” while pointing out three guys. There’s a brief additional pause before Stanley’s name, which I took at first like he didn’t know the guy’s name. Then during the lyric “tell you whose team they prefer to be on” Stanley has this look on his face that almost could be interpreted as liking guys/Gaston? I’d need to watch the section again.
During the mob/villager assault on the castle, Madame Wardrobe dresses three guys in women’s clothes/makeup like the animated movie. The men are Tom, Dick, and Stanley (as far as I know). Two are horrified and run off, but the third one looks at himself and smiles like “oh hey this is actually cool” and I THINK this is Stanley again. (He sort of walks off down the stairs slowly/skippy) (AND Madame Wardrobe seems delighted and saying something to the effect of “GO BE FREE!!!”). Also during this scene, LeFou officially changes sides (because finally had enough of Gaston/Gaston deliberately leaves LeFou being trapped under the Harpsicord).
Finally, in the ending dancing scene (where Belle and human!Beast dance) LeFou is with the people dancing. He’s dancing with one of the women when the dance calls for a sort of “turn and dance with person behind you”. He turns and I think Stanley again/a guy sweeps into frame and dances with him and they’re both smiling. I THINK this is the scene the announcement/news was talking about? However its pretty brief and doesn’t really show the two again afterwards.
Would an LGBTA+ person pick up on LeFou? Probably. Would a straight person have picked up on LeFou if the announcement/news hadn’t been made? Probably not (my dad literally said this as we were watching the credits). Again, I’m just one viewer and if its still a concern for people read other reviews/see if for yourself.

Prince Not So Charming
By Hannah Beck
When I was little, my Mom bought a book that soon became my favorite. The book depicted the story of Sleeping Beauty and included pages and pages of stickers. I made it my mission to cover every page with as many stickers as I could, finding just the right way to put them on and to make the pages even more beautiful. That pink princess book matched my pink room in color and all the other stories and movies I watched in content. Even at such a young age, I began to wonder when my own Prince Charming would swoop in and save me.
As I grew up, my interaction with princes did not disappear, but changed; instead of thinking of a fictitious prince and a magical kingdom I looked for handsome boys who were nice to me, or later cute guys who shared similar interests as me. It was possible to find my own kind of prince in my everyday activities and instead, the fairytale was crafted in my own mind with inspiration from some of the great love stories I was exposed to. Nicholas Sparks is known for being one of the greatest love story producers of our generation, his novels can be read in one sitting and so many of them have become hit movies, drawing tears from girls and giving them standards for their own relationships. My Mom and I watched so many of his movies over the years, and together we have watched countless other rom coms. One of Spark’s more famous works is Dear John, a novel turned movie that I have watched multiple times. Some scenes, while ridiculous, seem so perfect you cannot help but dream of them happening to you. For example, at the beginning of the movie where the two fall in love in one week, John Tyree (Channing Tatum) and Savannah Curtis (Amanda Seyfried) are walking around a house they are building for charity when it begins to rain and the two share a magical first kiss. Having limited experience with serious relationships, most of what I think of when I imagine a relationship is based on the interaction I have had with popular culture’s presentation of love, like the above example. While on one hand I understand that real life relationships have struggles and cannot be ‘perfect,’ the other part of me, that has been conditioned by popular culture to see love and romance in a specific way, dreams of a fairytale romance that ends like the movies. It wasn’t until my recent rewatching of Dear John with my friend that I began to wonder how much romantic portrayals in popular culture had affected our ideas surrounding love. This essay will begin a discussion about what types of media have had a profound effect on women's concepts of romance, and how those effects can be seen in modern society.
This problem is one that does not plague just me. Many women in today’s society struggle with this warring idea of romance in their lives, the picture perfect affair and the more realistic expectations for a normal, happy relationship. In fact, this idea is so common that three researchers created an observational study to see how women in American society combat these contrasting ideas of romance. Their experiment was titled “Realistic Love: Contemporary College Women’s Negotiations of Princess Culture and The ‘Reality’ of Romantic Relationships” and was published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships in 2017.
Koontz, Okorie, and Norman selected thirty women and asked them all similar questions about how they interacted with media presenting romantic content, and what their opinions were on the subjects of love, romance, and committed relationships. Koontz, Okorie, and Norman discovered that as a society we have invented this ‘princess culture’ where we expect women to be swept off their feet by their very own prince charming and ride off into the sunset, living lives that mirror those in the romantic movies and books that are so popular. These women are set up to have this belief by the media they consume. First, by Disney movies portraying tales of princesses and princes, where almost every story features the princess being rescued; and again by teen romance, moving onto adult romance where the same story is told again and again. This consumption of romantic media can be contrasted with one’s own experience with love and romance, first with one’s parents and later with their own romantic relationships. It was discovered that women in this study did one of two things; they either rejected the media presenting perfect relationships and deemed those relationships as unattainable, or they embraced the media and declared aspects of what was presented as a desired trait in their own future relationship (Koontz et. al). With this study comes the fear from parents and researchers that we are creating a culture where women need to feel as if they are being saved, or need to see aspects of ‘perfect’ relationships in their own in order to be happy in their partnership. As romantic relationships are forced onto girls at an earlier age and represented by ever heightened standards, the atmosphere surrounding relationships in modern society has changed, and not for the better.
It is not hard to wonder where this princess culture comes from. As young children these women were exposed to Disney movies and books, where a princess is always faced with an external problem that is usually solved by her prince riding in on a white horse and then gallanty riding off with the princess after he has saved her from distress. Snow White is working in the forest when she is tricked into eating a poisonous apple and ends up being saved by the Prince; Sleeping Beauty is asleep for the majority of the film and can only be saved by true love’s kiss, showing young girls that their only savior is a man. In fact, the only Disney movie featuring a romantic relationship where the heroine is not saved by the hero is Frozen. Finding salvation in her sister and the bond between family, the Disney sensation quickly became one of the franchise’s most popular movies. Moana, another popular Disney production, is the only princess movie to not feature a love interest or romantic relationship.
Disney is broadcasted in 133 countries and when asked, most young women claim they have been watching Disney princess movies since before they can remember (Nielson). One of the most common fairy tales young girls watch is Cinderella. While Disney has coined the most popular version, hundreds of stories about Cinderella exist and have been around for centuries; Taylor Swift even wrote a song referencing the story. The Cinderella Bibliography is a website and research tool that contains countless sources that all pertain to Cinderella. The website is managed by the University of Rochester but is part of the Robins Digital Library, it was originally published back in 1995 and is continually being updated with more and more useful information. When reviewing the site I was astounded by how many different stories of Cinderella existed, there were varying versions depending on what time period it was and in what area you lived. Little Firefly written by Terri Cohlene is an Algonquian Legend that tells the story of a young girl who, when her father dies, has to live with two stepsisters. Sound familiar? This is a Native American version of Cinderella, and while it has some changes that reflect Native American culture, the basis of the story is very similar to our American Cinderella. What was quite interesting, and was something I had never considered, was how Cinderella has influenced other stories; more importantly, how all fairytales have influenced later stories. Under the category titled “Miscellaneous Cinderellas”, I was intrigued to read about how The Wizard Of Oz, the famous book written by L. Frank Baum, can be considered a Cinderella story. A young, motherless girl who encounters evil, friendship with animals, magical slippers and a desire for a home are all important aspects of Cinderella. Possibly the darkest interpretation of Cinderella was the Grimm Fairytale version that was published in 1812. Following the same basic plot as most Cinderella stories, the Grimm brothers included a Cinderella who weeps often, whose sisters cut their feet to try and fit into the slipper, and lastly, birds who peck out the eyes of the two evil stepsisters. While Cinderella is still saved by her price, many of the plot points could not be included in a Disney version, for obvious reasons. The major takeaway I gained from this website was just how much romance media has permeated our society, it was around long before I was born and because it has been immortalized in books, movies, and even sites such as this one, it will be around long after my own kids are gone.
In an experiment testing an idea similar to Koontz, Okorie, and Norman, Veronica Hefner tested how the type of romantic comedy content that women came into contact with affected their beliefs and opinions on romance and love. Her work, titled “Does Love Conquer All? An Experiment Testing The Association Between Types of Romantic Comedy Content and Reports of Romantic Beliefs and Life Satisfaction” was published in the Journal of Psychology of Popular Media Culture in 2019. While Koontz, Okorie, and Norman investigated how Princess Culture has affected one’s reality surrounding romantic relationships, Hefner is more interested in how romantic comedy content affects how satisfied one is with their life. By asking questions and analyzing the types of romantic movies watched by the women, Hefner concluded that “although the widely held belief that romantic movies create unrealistic expectations was false, there was a correlation between positive portrayals of romance and reports of higher life satisfaction as well as endorsement of idealistic romantic beliefs” (Hefner). The fact that women find higher satisfaction in their lives if given a positive portrayal of love shows just how ingrained romance has become in women in modern society. This aspiration of having a perfect relationship causes so much pressure on women that some even resort to lying about how they met their significant others, in order to meet the standards they feel make their relationship picture perfect. Women feel the need to have their lives reflect the shows, movies, and books they frequent in their daily lives.
As we move into a more modern society, fairytales are spoken and read less, and these idealistic portrayals are seen more often on the big screen. With some of the highest grossing records of all time, it is quite obvious how much the public enjoys these types of movies. On the list of highest grossing Disney movies ever, Beauty and The Beast ranked 10 and Frozen at 9 (Clark). Even more popular than movies is the ever growing TV industry. With every TV show featuring at least one romantic relationship, we continue to see the effect of viewing idealistic relationships on women. Focusing specifically on romantic portrayals in TV shows that create unrealistic expectations regarding love, Segrin and Nabi published their article “Does Television Viewing Cultivate Unrealistic Expectations About Marriage?” in the Journal of Communications in 2002. Again, Segrin and Nabi are researching the effect of media on love and marriage but in this experiment, specifically how television affects women’s expectations of relationships and marriage. Before conducting the experiment Sergin and Nabi were hoping to answer two questions, “Is greater television viewing associated with more idealistic expectations about marriage?” and “Is there an association between holding idealistic expectations about marriage and more immediate and idealistic marital intentions?” Through their analysis, they were able to answer both questions and concluded that women who watched shows that fit into the romantic genre reported having more idealistic views of marriage and were more likely to enter a relationship with the idea of marriage being the final destination (Segrin et. al). Segrin and Nabi again proved just how much of an effect romantic media has on women and their ideas regarding romance, love, and marriage.
What may be some of the most widely watched television programs dealing with love and marriage are ABC’s The Bachelor and ITV Entertainment’s Love Island. Love Island is both less popular and less influential than The Bachelor; but it is still relevant enough to be included in this discussion. While so many unhealthy behaviors can be observed in these popular shows, what is most relevant for this discussion is the idea of instant connections and the unrealistic creation of an environment that fosters the perfect conditions for one to ‘fall in love.’ The Bachelor can be considered a modern day fairytale: girl meets boy and falls in love instantly, they travel the world and face adversity and public ridicule to pick each other in the end. While this seems ideal in theory, and the show has accumulated a cult following with millions of views each season, only 8 couples have managed to stay together after the final episode aired (Eidell). Given that the program has been filmed for 24 seasons, the fact that only 8 relationships have lasted proves that the Cinderella story does not play out in real life. The Bachelor has aired for 17 years and many fans are obsessed; they throw watching parties and bet on who will win. Some avid fans fall in love with contestants on screen and decide to go on the next season to try and fulfill their own picture perfect “meet cute.” The Bachelor has established itself as a main staple in American television and has greatly influenced women’s ideas about love. Women watch couples experience love at first sight, or fall in love while on vacation in magical destinations. After seeing a handsome man and a beautiful woman kiss in France as literal fireworks explode in the background, one cannot help but experience envy and dream of their own perfect romantic experience. Love Island is very similar but less popular; a group of men and women are put in one house and begin to pair off, some couples decide to become exclusive, while others decide to try out different partners. Both shows are famous for the drama and have amassed a large fanbase for guaranteed ‘good television,’ but the underlying message of a perfect relationship and a modern love story impacts the perceptions of a large majority of women, even if they do not realize it.
The Bachelor also depicts a new type of relationship that has gained popularity with the younger generation, hook-up culture. While the contestants are ultimately looking for love, during the journey you witness one man or one woman ‘date’ 20 potential partners. As the number diminishes each week, and the relationships grow more intense, sometimes you will see one Bachelor or Bachelorette hooking-up with multiple people. Young consumers of this media who have been watching this infamous TV show for years, like myself, see that on the road to love one must shop around first. The Bachelor presents two warring ideas that reflect a changing culture and major problem for relationships in America.
While hook-up culture has become the new normal for young people in America, women who end up finding their partner in ‘non-conventional ways’ often invent false stories where they met their boyfriend in a ‘meet cute’ story that mirrors one seen on screen or in a novel. The warring idea of wanting to have a picture perfect relationship but following societal trends and hooking-up have begun to clash in modern society. The modern woman is tasked with wanting a relationship that she has read about, watched, and interacted with her whole life, but one that she has also been told is unattainable. As women navigate these murky waters between getting what they had dreamed of as little girls and finding what they want as adult women, we come to a crossroads. Women must learn to balance these ideas and find a happy medium; one where they accept that no relationship can be perfect, but still do not settle for a relationship that is less than they deserve.
