True knowledge exists in knowing you know nothing || Dr. Ratio & Socrates
Okay, I legitimately laughed out loud writing that title, but listen. LISTEN.
Ratio's inspirations derive from many sources; from referencing Archimedes's brain-blast in the tub, to being doomed to have his head bonked by Newton's apple ad infinitum in his idle animation, to his ultimate line ('esse est percipi' / 'to be is to be perceived') a direct quote from Berkeley on Idealism - it's apparent that his design nods towards scholars across time periods rather than being a direct parallel to a singular academic.
Nevertheless, just for fun, I've been rotating Ratio and ancient greek philosophers around in my head and have had a great time chewing over how parallels Socrates in particular. I am in no way saying that Hoyo even thought about Socrates while they were designing Ratio, but I thought I'd share my thoughts. I think there are some worthwhile parallels to be drawn that touch on all aspects of Ratio's own philosophy regarding ignorance, the value of knowledge, and his deep appreciation of life. So, let's get into it.
Ratio is interested in humanity and curing 'ill minds with knowledge', that 'to turn a blind eye to the folly of others is not an etiquette, but a wicked worldly practice.' Ignorance is a disease - this is a concept that can be viewed through a Socratic lens. Socrates believed that that virtue and knowledge were impossible to separate from one another, and that virtue could be developed through acquiring knowledge and insight. If knowledge is virtue, then ignorance is vice. In Socrates's mind, no one would rationally choose to do something bad. People might choose to do bad things, but this is rooted in their own perception of the world - as in, someone would only choose to do something bad (for the world, or for themselves) because they believed (erroneously) that it was the right or good thing to do. To Socrates, the cure to this was knowledge: 'There are two kinds of disease of the soul, vice and ignorance.' & 'What does most harm in the world is not sinfulness but ignorance'.
To Ratio, 'If ignorance is an ailment, it is the duty of the scholars to weed it out and heal the universe'. He views his own ignorance as 'filth' that must be cleansed through methods such as reading. He also views knowledge as a method for humans to overcome their problems - 'Another day has passed. If your problem still hasn't been solved, is it possible the problem is you?' & 'You look distressed. Is something troubling you? if so, you can figure it out for yourself.' These statements sound harsh, but they also clue us into Ratio's philosophy - that through self-examination and improvement, one can overcome one's ailments.
Socrates was also known for being a trouble-maker, he was abrupt and tactless and did not care for someone's social standing nor decorum. He was also known for using what is now called the Socratic method, asking a series of questions that ultimately seek to show contradictions in the beliefs of those who posed them, and to move systematically towards a hypothesis free from contradiction. Socrates rarely made assertions himself - after all, he had no wisdom of his own. But he could interrogate others in order to expose their own foibles, much to the embarrassment and annoyance of those around him. He was once described as a 'gnat' chewing on the 'lazy horse of Athens', causing it to wake up and spring to life due to his persistent gnawing and prodding. Ratio also employs the Socratic method - 'I'm asking questions' - and also adopts sophist tactics such as playing devil's advocate and taking opposing sides (with both himself as seen a story quest, and with others as we see with his texts urging us to take up a side so he might debate us). Through questioning and interrogation, upsetting what we consider social convention and norms, we can dispel contradictions and thereby come closer to some form of truth.
To add to this - as highlighted in the replies below - Ratio’s skill ‘intellectual midwifery’ is a reference to the Socratic method. The idea being that Socrates helped those around him give birth to the knowledge that was already within them, rather than treating his students minds as empty vessels for him to fill with his own answers. Again this is beautifully echoed in Ratio - he doesn’t want to tell you how to live your life, he wants you to work out for yourself what it is you need, thus empowering oneself through self-examination and questioning.
Socrates did not believe in writing anything down. He believed that face-to-face communication was a far more effective way of communicating knowledge - which means, unfortunately, what we know of Socrates is primarily derived from secondary sources. Much of what we know about him today comes from Plato's dialogues, and Plato was known for liberally exercising artistic license.
Although Ratio is not dead, I find it interesting that his character story is told exclusively through secondary sources. To quote - '…There are no less than eight documentaries detailing his legendary exploits, and over a dozen memoirs about him. However, despite the plethora of commentaries, none of them seems to provide a compelling perspective.' It's as though there are no surviving fragments penned by Ratio's hand and all we have to go on is through the lenses of other people. This challenges us, perhaps, to try to think about our own interpretation of Ratio since secondary sources cannot be taken as a wholly unbiased account - and once again employing the Socratic method and empowering the reader to come to their own interpretation.
While Socrates left no writing behind, he was interested in spreading knowledge. Socrates spent most of his life in Athens, a city that was, during his lifetime (~470-399 BC), a hotpot of scholars, wisemen and philosophers. Athena, the Greek god of wisdom, was named after the city - her symbol the owl that is also appropriately perched on Ratio’s shoulder. Also in Athens at this time where the sophists. The sophists were a class of intellectuals who were known to teach courses in various subjects - but often for a high fee, and generally centred around the idea that persuasion and the use of knowledge as a tool was more important than wisdom or truth itself. There's some debate about whether Socrates could be characterised as a sophist himself, but, crucially, he is characterised as refusing to take payment for his teachings. He was born a plebeian (perhaps you might describe it as a mundane background.) He was known to dress in rags and go barefoot, speaking to and (often antagonising) people from all walks of life, preferring the marketplace as a center of debate than palaces or courtrooms. I can't help but think of the sophists as similar to the genius society (or at least Ratio's depiction of them in contrast to himself), cooped up in ivory towers and gatekeeping knowledge to the most privileged. He doubts if Herta's talent is always helpful to others, he compares Screwllum to a 'monarch'. Then again, the sophists may in fact be a bit of a parallel to the Intelligentsia Guild - from Ratio, 'when someone is willing to listen to knowledge that is being disseminated and circulated, a price is created'.
Socrates (or at least the Platonic depiction of Socrates) was at one time declared the wisest man in Athens by the Oracle of Delphi. Socrates balks at this assertion - how can he possibly be the wisest man in Athens when he in fact knows nothing at all? This was not a claim made of modesty - he truly believed that he had no wisdom, that he was unsure what 'wisdom' itself even was. Ultimately, Socrates concludes that the only way that the Oracle could be correct is that by actually acknowledging that he knows nothing he paradoxically is the wisest man in Athens. All wisdom, therefore, is rooted in wondering, with wondering only possible if one is open to admitting one's own ignorance.
What I love about all of this in relation to Ratio is that Ratio styles himself as a mundanite. The Intelligensia Guild advocates that 'all knowledge must be circulated like currency' and accepts 'all beings… who seek to learn'. Ratio has no time for the satisfied self-styling of intellectualism, he himself states that 'to speak knowledge, we must first make people realise their own folly.' No one is above criticism in this regard, even himself - again, to quote 'Whenever someone agrees with me, I feel like I must be wrong.' Again, I feel as though he would resonate with Socrates here: 'Smart people learn from everything and everyone, average people from their experiences, and stupid people already have all the answers'. With Aventurine, he is quick to mock his appearance as over-the-top and vapid - once again making it clear his distate for vanity and hollow displays of showiness (albeit he may have been acting for Sunday's sake here. Also, no comment about this coming from a man who runs around in a toga, lmao) Equally, with Aventurine, it is clear that Ratio is willing to learn from him - he apologises when he offends, he abhors his methodology and yet he still relies upon it and trusts in Aventurine's plan, he is drawn to him in some ways precisely because he is so different to himself. Aventurine (at least styles himself) as impulsive to Ratio's slow and steady methodology, Aventurine whose learning has been entirely self-made vs Ratio who has spent his life in classrooms, Ratio who scoffs at Aventurine's favourite games of chance yet adds slot machines to his simulated universe. And to Socrates, the experience of aporia – in all of its discomfort and disruption – is the very catalyst of wonder, and that wonder was not just the root of wisdom but also the way to live a good and happy life. There is something beautiful in this to me, and this extends to Ratio. Ratio fundamentally cares about life. For all his brashness, his lashing out against 'idiots', his harsh demeanour - he wants people to live good lives, he wants to contribute to the good of humanity - all people, even those he is annoyed by, he cares so profoundly and absolutely about life. The entire reason why he is obsessed with wisdom and learning is not to exalt or elevate himself, not as some kind of ritualistic expression of piety towards a deity, but it is instead an expression of devotion towards life itself. Ratio has a strict work out routine not so that he can show off his body, but because living healthily is living well and working out is a component of that. Even the way he fusses and worries about Aventurine, someone he is pointedly irritated by, reveals how deeply his care runs. So so much of his character is centered on caring for life, even if it is not immediately obvious.
Finally, I'd like to highlight some ways in which Ratio is not like Socrates. First of all, Socrates was repeatedly described as 'ugly' by fellow philosophers Plato and Xenophon - this is contrast to Ratio being repeatedly described as 'handsome'. This is an interesting subversion to me (albeit likely an indulgent one) as in both cases both men attempt to distance their physical appearance from the weight of their words. Ratio wears the bust for many reasons, but way to view it is that he is attempting to stop his appearance from bearing any influence in the subject of debate.
Socrates was also said to be blessed by a divine touch, and as we know, this is something that agonises Ratio as Nous has not yet turned THEIR gaze towards him.
Lastly, Ratio has - thankfully - not yet been ordered by the state to drink hemlock for all his trouble-making and blustering. Though perhaps he may someday be put on trial by the IPC if the theories that he is working alongside Aventurine to undermine the corporation are true - we will just have to wait and see.
Thanks for reading my little ramble. I'd be super interested in anyone's thoughts if they'd like to share, but regardless, I'll leave off on some of my favourite wee quotes from the Rat man:
'Even a life marked by failure is a life worth living - it is only in moments of solitude and despair, when help is absent, that fools grasp how to pick themselves up.'
'Do stay alive. I wish you the best of luck.'

This is Part One of my entry for the wonderful @cellythefloshie's birthday BINGO, featuring Matthew Knies (I know he was past the 2018 cutoff but celly gave me the green light for him). Although I did get bingo with my 5 tropes (Virginity, Age Gap, Secret Lovers, Meet Cute, Pining), the 5 are spread across Part One and Two. I am finishing Part Two soon, and then there might be a smaller third part - I just haven't figured out the fine art of writing smaller fics yet but I'm working on it. Nevertheless HAPPY (early) BIRTHDAY CELLY! I hope you enjoy this ❤️
Warnings/Notes - profanity, toxic parenting, parent estrangement. This part mainly covers the initial development of Matthew and the OC
OC Face Claim - Anna Katharina

Well, this is a huge fucking mistake… Lana thought to herself, forcing a smile as she sat across from her date.
She chastised herself further in her mind. Shit—I can't even remember his name. Was it Terry…or Jerry? Wait…Phil? No, he was last week. Fuck.
Against her better judgment, Lana allowed her arm to be twisted by her beloved brother to go on yet another blind date.
"Just try, Lana—just try again," he'd say. Now, she was wasting away across from this person, who was blathering about a subject that she had already forgotten about, alongside his name.
Lana rotated the highball glass with her fingertips, as she pretended to show interest in the man's one-sided conversation. Although her eyes appeared to be focused on his face, she was actually gazing out the window, just over the man's shoulder. From the 51st floor of the ManuLife Centre, the view of that particular evening boasted a magnificent August sunset, which added to the magical twilight of the Toronto city skyline.
Lana pouted in her mind. Why can't I be sitting here admiring the view with someone I love? Or even like? Attracted to, maybe?
It was from these moments of desperation, or weakness—whichever it was—that she found herself in this blind date situation to begin with.
She loved her brother, Andrew, for trying to set her up with a decent guy to develop a connection with. Lana thought it was reasonable that he might know a little more about men and dating since Andrew was in a loving relationship with Jason, his long-time partner.
She thought it was reasonable mainly because Lana had never dated anyone.
As in never, ever, ever.
Based on the non-success of the past men that Andrew sent her way, Lana felt her relationship status would not be changing anytime soon either.
Lana snapped back to reality just in time to catch what's-his-name staring at her tits as he finished his sentence.
She smiled demurely as she studied his expression. She really had not heard a word he had said, and it did not appear that he was awaiting a response from her. Seizing the opportunity, she excused herself and headed off in the direction of the ladies' room.
She turned back around to glance at her date. He was already otherwise occupied, ogling a nearby female server.
In the confines of the washroom stall, Lana swiped open her phone to remind herself of the name of the man she regretted suggesting to meet at one of her favorite restaurants.
Upon finding it, she muttered "Darren."
Lana responded to a text her brother had sent her earlier, asking how things were going.
L - Do you think that Jason can start vetting these guys before you send them my way? Personality of a piece of cardboard. I think I actually may have lost consciousness while he rambled on…
Andrew must have been waiting for her message, as he promptly responded.
A- Jason and I love you but we're done with sending you men. Coming to breakfast tomorrow?
Lana smiled at her brother's message. He always teased her saying she wouldn't have the foggiest clue what to do with a man anyway.
L - Love you both too. Breakfast is a no-go. Taking a client to view some condos. TTYL
A- Msg me when you get home
Lana exited the stall and glanced at her reflection as she washed her hands. She pondered what method she would use this time to send Darren packing.
Interestingly, most men never bothered to call once she handed them her business card anyway.
Tumblr media
They seemed to trip over the word "Owner", especially of one of the most prestigious real estate brokerages in Toronto.
As they wrapped up their date, Lana cordially offered her business card with her contact information. Darren glanced at her card and then back at her. His expression gave her all the information she needed to know about the man standing before her.
Other than "Owner", there was a second word that was a lingering fact about Lana. A word that had begun to plague her mind and body more and more. She always wondered how a man would react, if in fact they were ever able to look past the first word, and get to know her more.
That second word was virgin.

Lana and her older brother Andrew grew up in a small, close-knit community approximately two hours northwest of Toronto.
Their parents were cold, strict, and controlling towards their children. Although they made sure Andrew and Lana had everything they needed, there were always strings attached with everything they were provided.
Andrew was intelligent, strong-willed, and independent from an early age. Being 5 years younger, Lana idolized her handsome older brother. In turn, he adored her and always pushed her to succeed in everything she tried. Their bond became even stronger as their parents became even more controlling with Lana as she approached her high school years.
Andrew clashed badly with their parents, experiencing constant conflict and turmoil while living under the same roof. Andrew was determined to leave as soon as he could. He worked multiple jobs while still managing to excel academically. After earning as much money as he could, Andrew left to study architecture abroad at 18.
Once Andrew departed, his parents no longer acknowledged his existence. Andrew always felt a tremendous amount of guilt and remorse knowing he had deserted his beloved little sister. From afar, he did his best to help his sister navigate their parents' increasingly stern and uncompromising attitude toward her.
Meanwhile, Lana was experiencing rapid growth spurts at the age of 13. She was long, lean, and had natural curves which enhanced her athletic build. Her mother often shunned her appearance, making her feel that her natural beauty and her blossoming figure were a detriment and a cross to bear.
As she entered high school, it would mark the hardest time of her life.
Lana's mother drowned her with archaic myths and cautionary tales about boys, sex, disease, and unplanned pregnancy. She would be forever "ruined" if she gave in to having relations out of wedlock. As the ever-dutiful daughter, Lana absorbed everything her parents said and never scrutinized or disobeyed them.
The teenage boys at her school, with their raging desires fueling their comments as she walked by them, did little to convince Lana that her mother might be wrong in her teachings.
Teenage girls were in some cases worse than the boys. The behavior of the girls at Lana's school was full of envy and competitiveness. She often felt ostracized and alone during her first weeks and months of high school.
Lana would message Andrew in tears in the stall of the girls' washroom between classes. He was always there for her with words of comfort but would only allow her just a few tears of pity. Andrew would then coach her on how she would need to rise above it all. Step by step, Lana put her head down, studied hard, and became active in student council and various athletic programs.
Lana developed a no-nonsense type of attitude which served her well in her secondary school years, as well as keeping the peace at home. She managed to forge a few solid friendships with those who were authentic, intelligent, and did not concern themselves with trends or being popular.
At the end of high school, Lana was rewarded for her diligence and focus by excelling in academics, athletics, and the arts. She received a full scholarship to enter the Law program at the University of Toronto.
Fast-forwarding through her first two years in university, she maintained the same steadfast and hard-working mentality that was part of her nature. However, Lana soon discovered that Law did not ignite her passion. With Andrew carving his own path in architectural design and serving as her constant guide and mentor, she uncovered an unexpected love for real estate.
She landed a paid internship with a brokerage firm owned by an older gentleman by the name of Reine Schmidt. Reine immediately recognized Lana's dogged determination, her intellect, and her willingness to learn.
Reine taught Lana everything he knew. He had a proven track record of understanding trends to predict future outcomes, alongside his charisma, sharp wit, and masterful negotiation skills. With the guidance of her brother, Lana eventually followed her instincts and dropped out of university to work alongside her older mentor.
Lana's parents were furious and, in a fit of true toxicity, they severed ties with their daughter completely as they had done with their son.
As the cloud of devastation from the estrangement dissipated, Reine became a much-needed father figure in Lana's life. He provided her with shelter, which was merely a back room of the brokerage office. He helped her with the bare minimum, just enough to set her off in the right direction. The rest, Lana would have to work on and figure out for herself.
And she did. As the years went on, Lana gained a reputation throughout the GTA, being touted as Reine Schmidt's brilliant and beautiful protégé. She was elegant and poised while being creative and shrewd in her negotiation tactics. By the time she was thirty, Lana had her own substantial property portfolio, worth millions of dollars as the Toronto real estate market exploded.
When Reine became too ill to fulfill his responsibilities at his firm, he appointed Lana to step in on an interim basis. She did not know it at the time, but Reine had already decided to will her the firm. He just needed to make doubly sure that she was ready.
Lana remained by Reine's side as his illness progressed. He had no family to speak of, and he always said that he was not in the business of making friends. But he had grown to love Lana like a daughter, and although he never said as much, he was grateful that she made sure he was not alone during his last moments on earth.
▣◊▣◊▣◊▣◊▣◊▣◊▣◊▣◊▣◊▣◊▣◊▣◊▣◊▣◊▣◊▣◊▣◊▣◊▣◊▣◊
Lana awoke the following morning with the memory of her near abysmal date from the night before all but washed away. Retrieving her cell from her nightstand, she broke her own rule about no screens until after she had completed her morning Pilates. She just wanted to check if what's-his-name had messaged.
He had not.
Her business card had become like a detection device which helped identify those that would waste her time. Moreover, she was pleased that she could still calculate risk and probability by simply observing someone's non-verbal cues and other subtle behaviors.
Lana laid back on her pillow and gazed out her floor-to-ceiling windows in her bedroom. Her panoramic view of the city displayed all the colors of the sunrise of a late summer's morning. But the sunrise triggered a pang of loneliness within her. The sunset had a similar effect on her last night, and now the sunrise was having a go. She wanted someone to lie with and enjoy the wondrous city views in the morning. She longed to have someone to sit with at dinner and have them witness the perfection of a sunset by her side. She wanted to feel what it's like to crave someone and have them equally yearn for her.
Pushing her lonely thoughts aside, Lana yawned and stretched and slid out of bed, turning her phone off until it was time to leave for the office.
Any other morning, Lana would have opted to take transit, walk, or even run to her office. She quickly realized the good fortune of driving to work that day in an air-conditioned vehicle. The humidex was already climbing and it was only just 7 a.m. Another sweltering summer day in the city had begun.
As she drove, she mentally pre-planned her morning. Yesterday, a last-minute request came in from a very important client-turned-friend to view some condo listings in the downtown area. What left Lana perplexed was who the request was from.
Lana's mind drifted to another thought while idling at a traffic light.
Just two more weeks—two more weeks until I'm off and I'll press pause on the whole "trying to find a mate" search. Maybe I'm just meant to be alone. Maybe you just need to sleep with someone once and that'll be enough… maybe he's just not out there…. Lana mulled over these thoughts as she ventured south on St. George Street.
It had become a custom for Lana to flee the city at the beginning of September and spend a few weeks at the expansive lakeside home that she co-owned with her brother. With 5+ acres and an exceptional lakefront, it was a place where Lana could experience quiet for a while. That is, quiet after their friends, colleagues, and in some cases clients, descended onto the property for a popular get-together for the Labor Day weekend.
Arriving at her office before 7:30, Lana slipped into her leather chair and dove into a landslide of unread emails.
As the office began to fill, she left her office to greet her assistant and enjoy a morning chat. To Lana, this was one of her most favorite times of the day. Despite her upbringing, Lana sought connection with her professional family and was nurturing and compassionate to all of her associates. In turn, her staff were fiercely loyal to her and it showed in their combined success at the firm.
Lana returned to her office to tie up a few loose ends before her appointment arrived.
Ainsley tapped on Lana's office door, letting her know her 9 a.m. had arrived, and asked if she would like them escorted to her office. In her mind, Lana tripped over the word "them" as she was only expecting one person. Shaking off the confusion, she declined Ainsley's offer and thanked her as she made her way down the corridor.
As she approached the reception area, she was prepared to see Aryne Tavares but not her handsome husband John and another even more striking man standing next to the couple.
Lana's professional-turned-friendly relationship with the Tavares' began with helping Aryne navigate the Toronto housing market when John was traded from the Islanders to Toronto. Although John was present during some of the preliminary preference discussions, Aryne always appreciated how Lana focused mainly on her and her needs during the conversation, as opposed to her husband. Oftentimes, it was the opposite with other firms and their agents who wanted to talk hockey or suck up to the player in the hopes they might be able to drum up more business for themselves.
For several years, Lana's name had become the number one recommended by the majority of Toronto WAGs who were either in search of shorter-term furnished rentals or more permanent homes. She understood and made it clear (while treading lightly) that where the player-husbands were often making the salary allowing the upscale and sometimes super luxurious homes, it was the wives and families that had to live in them day in and day out. As such, Lana's firm cornered the market for finding suitable homes for Toronto's professional athletes and their families. Due to the unique demands, she created a specialized team and trained them specifically to work with sports agents, significant others, and the player's surrounding support system.
Lana's eyes lit up, as did Aryne's, as they greeted each other and hugged warmly.
"What an amazing surprise! Good morning!" Lana gushed, first embracing Aryne and then John.
Lana approached the third individual standing slightly behind John. He was taller than the veteran player by a couple of inches, visibly younger, and was extremely broad and fit.
Lana thought she recognized his face but couldn't quite place it.
Aryne made the introductions. "This is Matthew Knies. Matthew, this is Lana — she's a friend and has been our real estate guru for a number of years."
Matthew's cheeks were already burning when he first glimpsed at Lana. He was positive he had never seen a woman nearly as beautiful as she was.
But when Lana turned and looked directly into his eyes while extending her hand, that's when his insides fell apart. He had difficulty swallowing, and he realized his mouth was slightly agape.
Lana squeezed his hand warmly. "I thought I recognized you. It's really wonderful to meet you, Matthew."
Trying to pull himself together, he shook her hand and with a dry throat, he squeaked out, "Nice to meet you too."
As Lana escorted the group towards her office, Aryne explained that she and John just wanted to help sort through some of the available condo listings for Matthew.
Lana smiled and explained to Aryne and John her initial confusion when the request for condo listings appeared under the "Tavares" file. After all, she had already helped Aryne find their ideal home twice as their family grew.
Matthew had resided with the Tavares family at the beginning of the 2023/24 season and later moved to a rental unit downtown mid-way through the season. Unfortunately, for various reasons, he was not at all happy in that building and wanted to start the upcoming season in more suitable place. Although it was not discussed in their meeting, the main reason being that Matthew and his now ex-girlfriend had parted ways in that same unit, and it was not an amicable ending to say the least.
Lana appreciated having John and Aryne there to assist Matthew. In recent years, other members of her sales team had primarily handled the real estate needs of younger male players. Time was ticking before the start of the season, and Lana wanted to be efficient in pinpointing exactly what would suit Matthew. John's input would be valuable in considering practical factors, especially regarding proximity to Scotiabank Arena and the practice rink in the southwest end of the city.
As Matthew sat diagonally across from Lana, he pretended to show interest in the selected listings which Lana walked them through on the large monitor mounted on her wall.
But it was only Lana that held his attention.
Matthew wanted to absorb every detail of her from head to toe. He wanted to stare and drink in every detail of her face.
Not wanting to appear obvious, he made sure his eyes didn't linger too long when they wandered to catch another glimpse of her as she pointed out various features in each listing.
Matthew had not even realized that his auto-pilot responses were in full swing. He barely recalled agreeing to see a handful of ready-to-show condos in the surrounding area and that it would be Lana herself giving him a tour of each unit.
Lana rose from her desk. "So Matthew, if you're alright for time now, it sounds like we'll be spending the morning together."
Matthew smiled as he silently willed his cock not to twitch at the very thought of being with Lana in any capacity, morning, noon, or night.
"Sure — absolutely… I'm all yours."
With the feeling that his heart was in his throat, Matthew realized how true those words had become in just half an hour after meeting this siren.
Lana stopped by Ainsley's desk and quietly gave some instructions for tasks that could be taken care of while she was out. Ainsley couldn't help but look past Lana ever so subtly at the handsome young player as she nodded her head.
Sensing that Matthew had caught her pretty assistant's eye, Lana gave Ainsley a knowing smile. "You want me to find out if he's dating anyone?" she quietly asked.
A bashful smile spanned Ainsley's face. "Oh my god, he's just so hot… I don't know… I guess it would be nice just to know if he's got a girlfriend?" she replied under her breath.
Ever so coolly, Lana gave Ainsley a discreet wink. "I'll see what I can find out and report back later, ok?"
Ainsley beamed, barely able to suppress her excitement as she nodded enthusiastically.
Lana joined the group as they meandered down the corridor towards the elevators. Little did she know that this little "meet cute" with Matthew Knies would soon change her entire world.
▣◊▣◊▣◊▣◊▣◊▣◊▣◊▣◊▣◊▣◊▣◊▣◊▣◊▣◊▣◊▣◊▣◊▣◊▣◊▣◊
Later in the day, Matthew arrived at the building of his close friend and teammate, Joseph Woll. He pressed the intercom button and within seconds, the door to the lobby clicked open and Matthew made his way towards the elevator.
Minutes later, Matthew was at Joe's door, which he had left propped slightly open inviting him just to come on through. Matthew always appreciated Joe's easy-going and considerate nature and felt grateful for his friend and how they both seemed to naturally anchor each other.
He walked through to the open living room and kitchen area where Joseph was working away assembling his most recent Lego project — the famous Concorde aircraft.
Joe glanced over the tail of his newest Lego set towards Matthew. "How did it go — see anything you liked?"
Fuck… yeah, only it wasn't a condo, Matthew mused to himself.
"Not sure… I guess nothing really stood out," Matthew replied as he flopped onto the nearby couch. "Might take a few more times… I just want to pick the right one."
Without looking up from snapping a series of small blocks together, Joe continued. "Too bad there's not anything available in this building…" He searched the table for the next appropriate piece before adding, "…but then again if you moved in, maybe there's such a thing as seeing someone too much…"
Matthew looked at his friend with a pained expression. "Ouch — fuck, bro… is that what you think?" he chuckled.
Joe shook his head laughing. "No… I just like getting a rise out of you. Oh—and just letting you know that we're meeting up with the rest of the guys at the bar around 8 tonight. I guess it's guys only now… the girlfriends opted to do something else."
"Who's all going? Mints, Cowboy…?"
Joe continued, "Me, you, Bobbo, Mints, Cowboy, but then there's a few vets coming — Max, Muzz… Doaner I think. It's shaping up to be a fun night."
Matthew stretched and yawned. "Sounds like it. Alright… fuck — I need a nap. Can I crash here for a bit? I don't feel like going back to my place."
Joe was concentrating on reading the instructions for the rudder for the plane. "Be my guest… we'll head out to the bar together then. I think you've even got a pair of shorts and a shirt here so you can change. Crash as long as you want."
Matthew traipsed down the hallway to the second bedroom and fell backward onto the mattress. He was tired, but his mind bounced in a million directions, wondering about what Lana was doing now and how her day would end. He wondered if she went home to a perfect husband or significant other who loved her and treated her right, or if she was with some prick who would never realize just how amazing she is.
Matthew's insides were starting to twist and flutter each time his memory pulled him back to the seemingly insignificant moments of that day. Sitting next to her in her car. Chatting seamlessly while stuck in traffic. Riding the elevator with her, or holding the door for her whenever they entered or exited a prospective condo.
His mind traveled back to the quick lunch they had, where Lana couldn't stop laughing after Matthew told her a story from his childhood. When she continued to chuckle about it for the rest of their time together, Matthew thought he might melt with desire right then.
Matthew finally pushed past the restlessness he had begun to feel and drifted off into a deep sleep.
Later that evening at an upscale sports bar, the table of hockey players cheered when the servers presented the group with the most bizarre and fascinating Caesar concoctions. The popular Canadian cocktail was adorned with everything from pulled pork sandwiches and burgers on skewers to tempura prawns and dessert options.
The group's boisterous laughter marked the upbeat and optimistic mood of the group with the start of a new season just around the corner.
Matthew tried to mimic the mood but he simply wasn't there in mind or spirit. He even ignored being chirped by a few of the rookies for nursing his Corona and avoiding the subsequent tequila shot altogether.
Matthew had a close friendship burgeoning with former rookie Bobby McMann, whom he sat next to at the table. Bobby noticed Matthew's glum demeanor but initially assumed it was over the demise of his recent relationship.
Bobby clinked the clear glass neck of his beer bottle against Matthew's, which was still virtually untouched. "It'll get better, man—try not to let it drag you down too far."
Matthew nodded and smiled to acknowledge his friend's support.
Joe, who was sitting across the table, silently wondered about the change in his friend's mood. Yes, Matthew had been through some turmoil in the past months with ending a relationship that had gone off the rails. However, after the dust had settled in the off-season, his mood and outlook were full of confidence once again. Joe knew Matthew was really geared up about finding a new place quickly, so perhaps his low mood was a result of not having any luck that day. It didn't quite compute in Joe's head, but he would keep his thoughts to himself, for now at least.
When Matthew quietly announced to those sitting nearest to him that he was done for the night and was heading home, Joe and Shane (Doan) walked him out just to make sure their good friend was alright before taking off. Matthew assured them he was, that he was just tired.
He ordered an Uber and was back home in no time, but the change in location to his quiet condo only exacerbated him more. Pulling out Lana's business card, adorned with her headshot that he couldn't avert his eyes from, he placed it on the coffee table. He picked up his guitar, a not-so-new hobby that Matthew freed his mind with, much like his buddy Joe did with Lego, and began to pick at the strings. He was pissed with himself as he tried, and failed, to think of anything else other than contacting his new and unexpected crush.
Setting the guitar aside, he picked up his phone, entered Lana's cell number into his contacts and sent her a brief message, beginning with an apology hoping it wasn't too late to reach out to her.
Matthew was pleasantly surprised that she responded within minutes. He asked Lana a series of questions, all about viewing more condos, but it was mostly to establish whether he could reach out to her specifically. She responded that indeed he could, and she would do her best to accommodate his schedule in the coming days. Matthew wasted no time in setting up a time with Lana for the following day, and then two days after that.
He breathed a sigh of relief and smiled.
Following a silent moment, Matthew then shook his head and muttered to himself to get a fucking grip and that he was acting completely ridiculous by already pining over a woman that he didn't even know.

As the end of August approached, Lana and Matthew had spent a considerable amount of time sorting through listings and narrowing down options to view. Lana encouraged Matthew to be selective, as it was important for him to be happy in the space where he would spend the majority of the next eight or nine months.
On the other hand, she knew the start of the season was sneaking up quickly and she hoped, for his sake, that he would find a place before training camp, media days and everything else that goes with it was upon him.
Matthew secretly knew this and sometimes felt he was playing with fire, appearing either indecisive or hard to please with the places Lana showed him. With this in mind, Matthew quickly finalized his decision on a place and chose a second one as a backup.
He also wanted to take the plunge and ask Lana out for dinner to say thank-you.
The following afternoon, Matthew sat next to Lana on the sleek, white sofa in her office as she walked him through the paperwork. The air between them was comfortable and relaxed, but the professional nature of their relationship was still very prominent. While initialing and signing wherever Lana indicated with her elegantly simple manicured nails, Matthew tried to ignore the anxiousness that was swirling in his mind.
Lana had consumed his every thought since he first met her. Whether he was in the midst of strength training or skate drills, he imagined what it would feel like if she was there watching him. He thought about her in traffic, in the shower, or running out to get food. He continuously caught himself having these harmless daydreams and did his best to shoo them away in order to refocus his mind, but often he was fighting a losing battle.
With his last initial inked on the page, Lana smiled widely and extended her hand. "Congratulations, Mr. Knies—I think you'll be very happy in your new place. It really is such a great neighborhood."
"Well, thanks… yeah, I know I will. And thank you for all your help. And for being patient with me. I hope it didn't feel like I was never going to choose one… you just gave me so many great options," Matthew smiled as he shook her hand.
As they stood, Lana felt a little disappointed that this might be the last time her and Matthew crossed paths. Her initial impressions of him and his frat boy exterior had almost immediately dissolved and she found him to be very mature and he spoke with an intelligence that was far beyond his years. Oftentimes, Lana found that she genuinely looked forward to seeing him, especially the times when they decided to walk to each destination instead of fighting traffic. She had only felt this level of comfort, ease and enjoyment with a select group of people, and although she never would have expected it, she considered Matthew a friend.
If she was really being totally honest with herself, she had thought about him as a little bit more than a friend as her base female urges had only increased since she met him. Lana often fell asleep feeling frustrated, squeezing her thighs together to try and get relief from the pressure building in her core.
Lana moved towards the door, knowing she had limited time before her next meeting. “I hope you won’t be a stranger but I can only imagine how busy you’ll be once the season starts. Oh - and all the best…I hope you guys have a really great year ahead.”
Feeling that time was not on his side, Matthew’s adam’s apple bobbed as he swallowed nervously and stepped in close to Lana.
“Hey - well, I kind of felt like I was being a bit of a pain in the ass with monopolizing your time, so to say thanks, I - I was wondering if maybe you’d let me take you out to dinner sometime?
Lana’s eyes softened as she smiled, feeling flushed at Matthew’s invite. “Absolut - “
“Sorry to interrupt,” Ainsley appeared at the door, her eyes darted between the expression on Lana and Matthew faces. “Your 3:00 is here.” The curtness in Ainsley's voice would be unrecognizable to most, but Lana picked up on it quickly. She had all but forgotten that Ainsley had developed a crush on the young hockey player. Normally, her attractive assistant caught the attention of most guys around Matthew's age and type, but any interactions she had with Matthew thus far were strictly polite and professional.
Lana thanked her and said she would be out momentarily. She made a mental note to check in with Ainsley later, as she noticed her pursed lips before she walked stiffly down the hallway.
Lana turned back to Matthew. “How about this, I send you a note once I’m home from work and we can get something arranged, ok?
“Perfect - I guess until then…” Matthew postured for a hug which Lana gladly accepted.
For a split second in his embrace, she imagined how it would feel if his hands held her a little more firmly. Pulled her in a little more tightly.
She watched as he sauntered out into the reception area, quietly mumbling as she chastised herself.
“He’s 21…you're 32. Get your mind off of this notion, Lana.”
But for the remainder of the day, she couldn't stop the fluttery sensation in her stomach. It mystified and excited her but it was a feeling that also terrified her.
After her last meeting had wrapped up for the day, she hurriedly sent a message to Andrew and Jason. She flagged it as urgent for good measure.
L - Are either of you home tonight? Desperately needing advice - can I come by?
Jason responded first.
J - Are you ok? Already setting a place for you at the dinner table.
Andrew responded asking the same question.
Lana paused, held her breath and typed in each letter slowly.
L - I think I'm interested in someone.
There was a silence that could be felt, even over the phone.
Andrew eventually responded.
A- Jason probably fainted. You might want to pick up something stronger to drink than wine.

The walls are closing in, Nesta was sure of this. An enclave to keep her from bursting at the seams. To allow the fire to control every aspect of her being. Her eyes flit from Cassian to the room they are surrounded in. Though they were the only ones, somehow it feels too crowded. She needed air and the fact this conversation was tilting her world off its axis. The earth no longer revolves around the sun. He's within the center and now everything rotates around him. Running her hands over her face to jostle herself out of this cognizance.
" Yes because you never gave up on her. " she finally agrees. Realizations weren't easily swayed now that they are blatantly present. Memories are fading but she can still taste them on her lips. But that's not the only thing she can savor on her tongue. A kiss that she briefly remembers on a rocky hillside. There was no need to give him those details. Not yet, at least. Nevertheless, Nesta's lips tingle at the sensation of familiarity. How she hovered over Cassian's intact body and breathed a sigh of relief. When she pressed her mouth to his, there was no battle waging against the other. It was like the sunshine breaking the stormy clouds that bore down on her every day of her life. Comparable to the pines that kissed the snowflakes as they fell to earth. Clinging and pure. He was her beginning and her end. She didn't know why that wasn't a frightening thought. Or why she couldn't fear him at all.
Cassian spoke in fantasies, words that felt too sweet to linger. Another life where she felt wanted and not stuck in an endless loop of the mundane. Could his wings fly her so far to freedom? Nesta's eyes dance on those majestic appendages that ascend through her mind as well as the skies above. Imagining them taking her far, far away. And she would soar with him so very willingly. For once, maybe she could trust her heart. Her mind is still racing against her - against him. She still needed him, even on this island. " I want to remember, Cassian. " she listened to every word from his mouth and she wanted to desperately grab hold. " I want to remember Elain and Feyre. I - " she inhales to gather thoughts, " Something is tormenting me. Yelling at me to remember something so incredibly disastrous. " Though there's warmth and affection when she looks up at him. Moving closer to him so her chest is pressed against his. In this life he spoke of, they were a beautiful disaster. " I want to remember you. Us. " she choked out the last admission, her tears springing to her and she resented them.
Yes, they were both fools. He may not agree but she will do it for the both of them. Wordlessly, her hands reach up and her fingers trace his jawline. Truly in awe at the man underneath her fingertips. He was making the air around her even thinner. " You are certain that I am this Lady Death? Are you not my Lord? " she whispers, assurance rushes through her that she has certainly gotten on her knees for this male before. A pink tinge colors her cheeks, she is hesitant to allow her thoughts to stray too far. His words keep her pacified and she cannot flee. Her heart racing now, he loves her? He admitted it so easily that her eyes had widened. " I believe you, you know. " her touch now placates as it tangles into his darkened tresses. Intuition calls to her that he needs comfort. Nesta can inspect every aspect of him but she sees no deception staring back at her. " I hate that I believe you. I hate that I can't walk away. " she finally rests her head on his chest, " Because walking away means that I am turning away from you. Cassian, " she pulls away slightly so their eyes lock, " If I walk out of this building, will you promise to hold my hand? "
Tumblr media
With her now being so close he could almost close his eyes and breath in the scent of the crisp air of a winter sunrise, so sharp yet inviting. a hint of cool peppermint lingering in her wake. she held the scent of toasty cinnamon paired with a nutmeg kiss, sharp yet comforting. she was the smouldering smoke of a fresh fire with the tender greeting. she was the allure of warm spice and spicy ginger with a hint of zesty citrus. She was welcoming and inviting in every imaginable and he couldn't get enough of her. He knew deep down that it wouldn't be long until he was folding her into his arms, perching her upon his lap, as he took in as much as he could get. Relishing in her presence and letting her scent consume him in any way he was able to. All of it was almost enough to sooth and push that dull ache aside and bring back the comfort he had been so lost without.
He had promised himself ages ago that he would do better for the woman in front of him. That he wouldn't let himself become so weak and easily damaged as he had done before. He vowed that he would make himself better, that he would not only physically strengthen himself but he would work on his mental shields. He would do whatever it took so that he could be the force needed not to fall once more. Her words made his inner turmoil come to a halt as he glanced up at her, his lips tugging back into the smallest of smiles. "She was happy, very happy. It took her a long time to get there though, she had a lot of battles to face but I never gave up on her." That was true, he had been there every step of the way with her. Despite how angry and frustrated he had gotten at times he didn't turn his back on her. He would have risked everything if it meant that she could have the life she deserved.
At the start he didn't know what he had been expecting. Perhaps her yelling at him, maybe even a slap or two. Yet Cassian did not expect for Nesta to pull and shove away from him, his hands falling to his sides as he sat there, his gaze narrowing into a frown as his lips pursed. "I did but because of that no matter how many times I fail I will apologize and work harder to be better for you.," he nodded slowly as he licked his now dry lips. "Whether you or anyone else believe them I know that they are true for I had been there every moment you truly needed me and..." pausing he shook his head, "I don't know." He didn't truly know why she had loved him once before, he was still trying to figure it out. He could list all the reasons why she held his heart yet since coming here and seeing this version of her he couldn't figure out why she did love a bastard born male like him.
The second the word fool had reached his ears he could feel his gaze turning to a hardened glare as he looked at her and rose to his feet. "I might be a fool for I gave myself over to love, I might be a fool for I stayed by a stubborn woman's side without a second thought because I knew that I would do anything to see a smile on her face, I might be a fool for hoping that the woman that I love could have everything that her heart desires but," pausing he shook his head, "you are no fool, you never have been and you never will be. You are amazing. You are the one who will defend those she cares for without a second thought. You are a caring sister and you love your sisters, even if others can't see it I know it's there. You are a fierce warrior who will never give up," clearing his throat he nodded slowly, "you are my Lady Death and I will walk by your side from this day until the end of time. I will walk by your side in this life and the next. I will walk by your side in this world or the next. For it will always be that, Lady Death and her General."

WIP Wednesday again? Man, does time fly. It's Ozpin and Yang again this week:
Ozpin retrieved his mug. “What would you propose, then?”
Yang looked up at the ceiling for a moment. She found the slow rotation of the gears pleasingly hypnotic.
The first thought that came to mind made her smile. She looked back to the headmaster.
“Any question you ask me, you have to answer about yourself,” she challenged.
Just like Never Have I Ever, her thoughts finished.
His eyes lingered on hers. He took a sip of his cocoa.
He set the mug down on the table, and finally, that sly smile returned to his face.
“Very well then, Yang Branwen.” He leaned forward.
“Who are you?”
She smiled back.
Gotcha.
She teed up a mock-sigh. “Oh, where to start?” she mused. “Well, I’m a tribesman. I’m a first-year Haven student, so, I’m seventeen-going-on-eighteen. Annnd I’m a member of Team Wicked. How ‘bout you?”
He nodded slowly. She could practically see his brain calculating the trade-off, accepting her implied questions with both reluctance and respect.
“I’m… from Vale,” he began. The words tripped out with an uncharacteristic, unpracticed awkwardness that surprised Yang. “I am the headmaster of Beacon Academy, and as such, do not, uh, belong to a team. But I would consider my peers -- the faculty here, and the headmasters of the other academies -- all to be my good friends.”
“See, there ya go!” she said, sounding a bit too much like she was encouraging a child. The thought amused her so greatly that she had to actively tone it down in her next sentence to avoid seeming intentionally patronizing. “You didn’t tell me your age, though.”
He administered a heatless glare. “I suspect you already know that’s an unfair question.”
She flashed him a vindicated smile. “Saw right through me, huh?”
“Nevertheless,” he continued with a pardoning motion of his hand, “nowadays I tell people I’m forty-eight. Which is the truth, at least for this lifetime.”
“Get out.”
“Easier to believe now than when I was seventeen-going-on-eight-thousand.”

“Maybe I could skate my way into your heart?” - Draco Malfoy x Reader
Summary: Draco finds out what your after-school activity is.
A/N: I hope you all enjoyed it! The first version of this was accidentally deleted so I had to make some changes at the end.

It was one of those winter days, Thursday, to be specific of the current day at Hogwarts where you had the free time to head over to the iced Black Lake and secretly pull out your hidden talent: figure skating.
As you were standing at the edge of the lake, you embraced the cold snow and breeze by sitting down, feeling the cold in your bottom and legs as you folded your knees, holding them tightly to your chest. While you were smiling, watching the view of the lake, there came a visitor who was walking towards the Black Lake.
Draco Malfoy, the unexpected visitor, heard about your daily whereabouts and decided to see what you were up to. This pureblood took a liking in you during the start of the year and has always tried searching for opportunities to start a conversation, or even to find you alone, so he could be the only one to notice how beautiful you could be doing the simplest things in life.
It wasn’t hard asking about your whereabouts since everyone but him practically knew where you’d be but it was really hard for him not to sound genuinely interested or curious that people would suspect that about his liking for you.
First, had Crabbe and Goyle sent around the Slytherin common room looking for Blaise who was asked by the two to find both Pansy and Daphne who was last with you at the Great Hall before you left for the lake.
When Pansy and Daphne told Blaise where you were, they asked if Draco had something to do with Blaise being sent. Saying yes, Daphne and Pansy hoped for the best since they all secretly knew how Draco liked you, even with the simplest gestures he gave.
So when Blaise told Draco where you were, the Slytherin prince grabbed his nearest coat and beanie and ran off to the Black Lake, quickly placing his gloves on. He wasn’t nervous about seeing you. He was only planning to watch you from the sides, hoping you wouldn’t freeze to death. But from what he saw the minute he arrived, he thought wrong.
As you were still by the edge, sitting down as you placed your knees on your chest, Draco assumed that you were out by the lake, but freezing yourself to death, not on purpose, but his scared emotions led him to think about the worst things possible.
He dropped from watching over you to running towards you as fast as he could. Draco was already removing his coat, thinking he was going to wrap you in it, but his tracks suddenly stopped when he saw you stand up and placed a step forward onto the lake. He was going to scream and ask if you were mad but when his eyes moved onto your feet, he happened to see that you were wearing a pair of figure skates, something that he never expected you to wear. He never knew you were a figure skater. Maybe you were trying out the sport, maybe this could be his way of talking to you, teasing you on how you can’t skate.
But he was wrong.
The minute you placed your other foot onto the ice, you started gliding around the ice, quickly giving yourself a couple fast laps around the lake.
He was stunned. He was possibly one of the few people left in school that was not aware of your special talent. How did nobody tell him of your skill? The audacity of some people! It made him feel less updated than usual and it made him slightly scared that there could be other many things that he was not aware of concerning you.
While you were unaware of him being there, Draco watched how skillful you were in figure skating. He was amazed. He loved every movement you made on ice and how gorgeous you were and made the sport. The way you made edges with only one skate on the ice to smoothly rotate on air as you clipped yourself together as you jumped to spinning gracefully from easy to difficult positions, he was mesmerized by you. You looked so joyful and at home as you were in your element. Knowing that you probably did not want to be bothered, Draco turned around to make his way back to the common room with an idea in mind.
—
The next day, Draco was more than excited to end classes. He was so thrilled with what he came up with yesterday that he was willing to run off during the last five minutes of potions class and meet you at the Black Lake.
He was a table behind you as he could hear the excitement from the conversation you were having with Daphne and Pansy. The three of you started chit chatting during the last five minutes as Snape was giving last minute instructions regarding the potions experiment he has been rambling about for the whole period.
“So, what are today’s plans for Y/N Y/L/N?” Daphne asked with curiosity.
“Obviously the usual, am I right, Y/N?” Pansy added to the question.
You grinned happily, thinking your two friends were reading your mind. “You know it,” you nodded.
“Oh how lovely,” Daphne sarcastically said as it was the same plan every weekend.
Then a sudden voice from the back interrupted your conversation, “You know, Greengrass, I think it would be SO lovely if you could save this conversation for after class. Some of us are striving to stay on top of the class instead of yammering about their plans.”
The three of you turned around to see a slightly disturbed Draco Malfoy as he was holding his quill tightly to his notes. He crossed his arms when the three of you gave him an irritated look. “What, can’t a man listen to Snape? Or are you three actually jealous that I might have better plans than you?,” he said slightly grinning.
While Daphne and Pansy rolled their eyes and looked back at Snape, you remained looking at Draco with a scoff coming from your mouth as you shook your head.
“So, what are today’s plans for Draco Lucius Malfoy?,” you tried sounding interested as you added a hint of fake excitement in your tone with his last name.
Draco got the sarcasm from your tone and leaned in closer from his table and whispered, “You’ll see.” He suddenly looked back at his open notebook and started scribbling things on his notes.
Before you could ask what he meant, you felt a figure in front of your table towering you as you could see a shadow by Draco’s table.
“Trying to distract our fellow peers are we, Y/L/N?”
Turning around, you saw Professor Snape hold his book tightly to his chest as he looked at you with disappointment in his eyes. The third best student, as Hermione was second, getting distracted in potions class was something Snape did not want to see but unfortunately he did. He shook his head in disappointment as you were speechless.
“Try not to distract Mister Malfoy again or I will change your seating arrangement.” He demanded.
While Draco was silently snickering, you gave him one last eye roll as he smirked, then looked back at the class and waited till class ended. Thought of Draco telling you that you’d see what he was talking about was swimming in your mind as you were confused by what he meant. After packing up your things, you turned around to see that he was already by the door of the classroom, hastily walking away from class. Nevertheless, you gathered your sling bag and bid your friends goodbye as you started making your way to the Black Lake.
It was another wonderful afternoon to feel the snow fall on your face as the breeze of the cool wind was felt on all parts of your body. As you were tying your skates, you heard footsteps walk on the snow behind you. Amused that there was someone taking up the lake as well, you signed as you realized that today was not a private skating day for you.
“What that a sigh I heard from you, Y/N?” chuckled Draco, who was towering over you with a big grin on his face.
Standing up to still being towered thanks to his height, you looked up at Draco with your famous eye roll and scoff. “I just didn’t expect you to be here, Malfoy.” you crossed your arms as your eyes darted to the pair of skates he’s been holding.
“Darling, I told you that you’d see what my plans were, didn’t I?”
“Are those your skates?”
Draco lifted up his skates confidently as he presented it with such happiness. “Father bought me the best skates. He said I should skate in the best skates, especially during this freezing time of the year.” Draco then plopped on the snow and started tying his skates like a happy little five year-old who was so excited to wear their favorite pair of shoes on.
“Mind if I join you?” he asked.
Putting your arms high up in defeat, you replied, “I don’t see how I can stop you.” Then when he was finished tying his skates, you helped grab his hand, pulling him up as the two of you faced each other ever so closely as there was little space left in front of you. After staring at each other awkwardly, you finally broke the silence and blinked.
“Well, let’s get going, Draco. Wouldn’t want others beating us to the ice.”
He chuckled from embarrassment and nodded in reply. He thought that seeing you skate so effortless made him think that skating was something easy to pick up on, so as he placed his first skate on the ice, there was absolutely no fear in his eyes. But when he started placing his other foot on the ice, Draco thought he was starting to lose balance and fear arose in him as he was shaking on the edge of the ice.
You only realized that he was struggling after skating farther away from him. Being afar, you squinted as you examined Draco’s facial expressions as he was trying to stand up straight on the ice. Seeing that he was muttering things to himself and trying to place his foot forward to continue skating, you laughed at him for a second then skated back at him.
Nearly arriving at the ice patch he was in, you decided to joke around and attempted a hockey-stop closing up on him that he almost thought you were purposely going to make him fall that he actually lost complete balance and fell on his own.
“Merlin’s beard!” he winced in pain as he crashed onto the hard ice.
You chuckled to yourself as you definitely knew the feeling he went through and being a nice person, you extended your hand for him to reach. “Maybe I can help you up”
At the same time when Draco had gotten a reach of your hand, he grew a smirk on his face that was too late for you to notice and understand that when his grip became tighter, he strongly pulled you down to the ground, forcefully hitting your bottom onto the tough ice as yelped in shock.
What wasn’t part of Draco’s plan was that as soon as you fell to the ice, your body smoothly yet quickly glided to his, colliding into each other and before your body could react and glide away from his, the both of you held on to each other tightly without thinking. You grabbed his shoulders, while he grabbed your waist, then when the two of you held on to each other, the gliding stopped. Draco looked at you with careful eyes as you started blushing.
It was only a matter of time when your blush was about to get even redder until he thankfully cupped your face with his hands. The soft warm feeling of his gloves relaxed your tenses as you exhaled slowly and shakily as his face was close to yours.
There was a smile in Draco’s face as he was waiting for a perfect moment like this to happen in his life. Without second thinking, he tilted his head, signaling that he was going to kiss you. You closed your eyes as you felt his soft lips plant a passionate yet careful kiss which was briefly deepened as you wrapped your arms around his neck, while his in your waist.
Finally pulling back, there was a slight chuckle from Draco which made you raise your eyebrows. You crossed your arms in confusion to where this meant.
“Anything funny, Malfoy?”
Draco slowly stood up by himself, regaining his balance as he whisked away the snow that was falling onto his clothes. “Maybe I could skate my way into your heart.”
You gave out a genuine laugh as it was cheesy yet funny enough. He extended his arm as you grabbed onto it tightly, standing up beside him as you rolled your eyes playfully at him and nudged him in the shoulder.
“Why didn’t you tell me you didn’t know how to skate? Just because you bought the best skates doesn’t mean it will automatically turn you into a good skater! You can’t buy talent, Malfoy.”
“Father suggested I get the best. Maybe you could teach me?”
“How to skate your way into my heart?” You giggled.
Draco pointed at you with a smirk saying, ‘Hey, that was you who said that, not me!’
“Darling, we all know I meant by skating. But, I suppose that could work too.”
“Well, maybe we could start with your suggestion first, wouldn’t want Mr. Malfoy’s money to go wasted if you don’t use your skates.” Then you held out an arm for him to cling on so that you could start gliding together.

Getting out of your car, the cool morning breeze caressed what it could of your exposed skin. The walk from the parking lot to the courthouse wasn’t long, but the chills that ran through your body made it feel like it took a little over the usual 5 minutes.
The sun shined like every morning, yet today it felt different somehow.
Maybe it was wishful thinking, but it felt as if today would be the beginning of something new or different, and that was a lot to say for someone like you.
“Morning judge y/n!”
“Morning”
Your job placed you in a position where you were always in the eyes of criminals and felons that were either angry, moody, violent, sad or careless  —and any other word you can come up with, when thinking about wrongdoers who are finally facing the law— forcing you to try seeking for positivity in other aspects of your life.

Since you were a child, you always had an itch that annoyed you every time you had to be in the presence of an unfair or unethical situation and couldn’t do anything about it.
It is positive to say that you got it from your mother's strong moral views on righteousness, honesty, and integrity.
And so a dream came up to you, a dream you had expressed to your parents at the tender age of 5 while watching cartoons one cold morning, your parents discussing the latest incident on that morning's newspaper on the other side of the room.
"I want to put all those kwiminals in jail"
There was something fulfilling about being able to help people get justice for the wrongs that were done to them, something about making the corrupt, nefarious, and unlawful pay. Your dream never wavered, the sole thought of what the future would hold made you buzz with excitement during your teenage years and still did now in your adulthood.
It was present during your entire life, you weren't afraid of speaking up when a witness was needed in an unfair situation in school, whether you were putting yourself in a position against a classmate or a teacher, all that mattered was that the problem was solved in a fair manner.
Yet, even though you kept steadfast loyalty towards your beliefs, it sometimes got you in trouble, as not everyone sees good in someone openly voicing their wrongdoings. Leading you to sometimes being labeled as a snitch —and no one wants to befriend a snitch—.
Nevertheless, you pushed through, finally meeting people that shared your views in college.
It was nice to be able to have a conversation with people with the same mentality and strong feelings towards justice as yourself —not saying that you didn't encounter people who were walking this path just for the money.
And finally, after graduating from law school with two of your closest friends by your side, you decided it had been way too long of a peaceful ride for the evildoers and it was time to get with it.
Tumblr media
"Good morning Y/n!" A voice spoke loudly from behind you.
"Morning Guk! How was your weekend?" It was always nice to see Jungkook 1st thing in the morning. For some reason, his cute bunny teeth always gave you life.
Jungkook was one of your friends from college AKA best friend #1. He had the face of a baby with the wisdom of a 70-year-old man –who would have thought.
His words towards you were always of encouragement or offerings of helping you with anything you needed –just like in college.
He was methodical with his work, always studying his cases with a careful eye and with discipline. Some hated it, stating he took way too long to make final judgments, however, there wasn't a ruling that Jungkook had ever issued where the victim had been left to suffer the mischief without the guilty paying the price.
"Pretty calm actually, taking into consideration that I had the Kang case on Sunday" The younger of your friends exhaled "That man has got to get a grip on his life, this is his 3rd showing" He made a pause as if bringing up some memories from the case, however, he quickly returned to the present "How was yours?"
"It was quiet; abnormally so, thus my wild guess is that this week I'm going to be assigned as many cases as possible."
"I know that feeling. The impending doom crawling towards you in the shape of Jimin dropping them on your desk."
“Yep…” You sighed bracing yourself for the upcoming day.
Briefly talking about other uninteresting subjects and your mundane lives –like, when was Seokjin going to invite both of you out for lunch— you both eventually parted ways to your own chambers.
 "Good morning Judge Y/n"
"Morning Jimin, you look refreshed!"
Jimin —your perky judicial secretary— was the earthly version of an angel mixed with a dutiful fairy, you sometimes wondered how he even managed to hold up that 1,000-watt smile all day while dealing with you.
You had been working together for 3 years now and every year they decided to rotate the secretaries, you prayed they wouldn't change him for someone else.
"I am! Thanks for the days off, they really helped!"
"Don't mention it bubs. What do you have for me today?" You asked as your heels clicked on the tile making your way behind your large rectangular Victorian style oak desk, Jimin quickly trailing behind you with a stack of folders in his arms.
"These four are for today and these four are for tomorrow" he said as he divided them into two groups in front of you. "I'll have the ones for Wednesday and Thursday ready by tomorrow" he concluded with a small nod and a smile of accomplishment on his plump lips.
"Thanks, Jimin. What would I do without you?" you smiled up at the younger man, who smiled wider and turned to leave to his own desk a couple of feet away from yours.
Tumblr media
Finally, mentally prepared to start your day —after mindlessly scrolling through your phone for 20 minutes— you unlocked your computer and began reading through the files that Jimin had left on your desk labeled ‘Monday’.
"Another asshole, who thought he could get away with a hit and run..." you muttered to yourself, as you reviewed the first case.
The following trials were for a domestic violence case and 2 robberies.
After reviewing the files, you began transcribing some of the information on your computer, adding personal notes based on the evidence that had been collected for each case and saved it all for its intended use in the next 2 hours.
"Since no one likes a slacker, I might as well go through the ones for tomorrow as well."
As expected, there was another case of robbery, one for theft, a case for assault and last but not least a misdemeanor for street racing.
Tumblr media
After an hour of transcribing that called for a well-deserved break, you stretched your arms above your head, sighing softly as the tension was released.
"Judge... would you like some tea? I'm on my way to the Cafe"
"Ugh Jimin, I love you, why are you so sweet, I'll come with." As you both picked up your belongings and were about to head out to the small cafe across the street, an unforeseen visitor arrived abruptly, startling both you and your secretary.
"Oh, so you're both slacking off now. I thought that was a Y/n thing?"
"I- No judge- we-" Poor Jimin couldn’t even complete a sentence, his mind still in a jumble as a result of the sudden barge into your chamber.
"Seokjin, shut up.” You cut your eyes at his comment. “We are going to the café. You either come with or move out of the way." You laughed a bit while pushing past your best friend #2, making your way out.
Oh, how lucky were you to be able to have them working near you.
Tumblr media
Back from the cafe and ready to face all cases for the day, you walk to your chamber accompanied by Jimin who helped you wear your black robe, both quickly headed to the courtroom for your first trial right after.
Monday had gone by smoothly; all cases being addressed as they should and all sentences set in place.
Tuesday was a better day, the morning had been less chilly than the day prior and you could read a bit before your hearings of the day, since you had proactively  reviewed the cases of today, yesterday.
After the third time hearing it today, a fourth was just unnecessary, however entering the courtroom for the fourth time on that day, you heard the bailiff announcing your arrival.
“All rise. This court is now in session.” Shuffling could be heard, a sign of everyone in the room getting on their feet. “Honorable judge Y/n L/n Presiding.”
You took your seat and announced to everyone that they could do so too. You took the files that the bailiff handed you and began reading the case.
“Good morning everyone. Today's hearing is for case 3476, the city vs Lee Simon, Kim Taehyung and Jean Reynolds” you announced.
“Lee Simon, Kim Taehyung and Jean Reynolds, all three of them, age 26, accused of trespassing private property, injury of a third party and driving over the speed limit, while being timed against each other. All of it initiating from 25th avenue to Map of the Soul street.” You concluded.
“How do you plead?”
“Innocent” “Guilty” “Innocent”
Internally, you wanted to laugh, but you knew your position required for you to remain serious and focused. It wasn’t the first time a group of friends split due to being involved in a situation they weren’t expected to be in, and it wouldn’t be the last.
“Seeing that you have different views, let us review the information presented.”
Videos and pictures from street cameras were shown, as well as footed from a dash camera in a hidden police vehicle.
“Evidence shown so far, seems to portray all three of you as guilty, and the witnesses are yet to come in, excluding the owner of the vehicle you crashed into while running against each other as well as the owner of the private property you drove through.”
You watched all three of them carefully as you gave them a run through of how this case was going on for them. Two off them looked indifferent, like someone who has done it before, did it this time and will probably do so again.
A chance was soon to be given to all three of them to express why they believed they were innocent, however another piece of evidence was brought in.
“According to this report sent in about your record, you are all repeat offenders, meaning that your options are limited; paying for the legal fees and community service, paying for the legal fees and 1 year jail time or paying for the legal fees, suspension of your driver’s license, a fee of $10,000 and a possibility of impoundment of the motor vehicle used in the crime.”
"I am going to admit I was there, but I did it for a specific reason, your honor."
"And what reason could that be?"
“Can I approach the bench?”
“Permission granted." The man in question slowly approached you, eyes never wavering from yours.
"I needed the money your honor. I have a daughter..."
"Says here, that you have been detained before and gave out the same reason, so why should we let you off easy Mr. Kim?"
“So… there is no way we aren’t paying the legal fees -I take it?” the one with the tiger-like eyes spoke up, a small smile playing on his lips as he did so.
“No” the frown on your face was so pronounced, that no area was left for more of his attempt to banter.
“Do I get the easier outcomes if I plead guilty.”
“That’s a possibility...” Now you know why he pleaded guilty. He’s not new to this.
“I have a daughter your honor… I can’t go to jail” He said before you were able to add to your previous sentence.
“That’s for me to decide, however, can’t she stay with a family member?”
“She only has me…” his eyes turned gloomy as he directed his gaze to the floor Infront of you. Should you even trust that action. It could be staged for all you know.
It annoyed you the way how the immediate mention of a child felt like a tool he was using to soften the blow of your possible verdict. However, it still got under your skin and you felt your hard-exterior crumble, allowing your feelings to take over and think about the poor child that would have to deal with an uncomfortable situation.
“How old is your daughter Mr. Kim?”
“four” His demeanor changed entirely the moment he found more time to speak about the hypothetical child he had.
“Who is she with at the moment?”
“A friend”
“Everyone back to their seats…”
You were so predictable. Jungkook would have never softened for something like that.
He would have given him 2 years in jail, taken his car, taken his driver’s license and custody of the child as well, for not being a suitable parent. But no, you had to be like Seokjin, soft hearted and taking people’s feelings into consideration. Bleh.
“Based on the evidence collected. I am ready to provide a verdict for this case. Lee Simon and Jean Reynolds you are sentenced to serve 6 months of county jail time, pay a fine of $5,000 plus all legal fees and your license will be suspended for 6 months. Kim Taehyung, you are sentenced to a fine of $3,000, suspension of your driver’s license for 6 months, paying the legal fees and community service for 6 months.” You stated re arranging the documentation on your desk and setting them aside.
“Please take them. Mr. Kim shall be escorted to the officer’s department in order to have his rules set in place.”
“Thank you.” A voice said to you right after. You didn’t have to turn to know it was Kim Taehyung, however you did so. He was flashing you a large square smile. It wasn't 1,000 watts like Jimin’s but it was still warm and different, even a bit playful if you looked at it for long.
“That daughter of yours better be real.” You muttered before collecting the final documentation and exiting the room.
But not before hearing.
“Didn’t know they had such pretty judges in here, I should get arrested more often.”
You should have put him in jail. Or maybe not.
Tumblr media
It’s funny how you haven’t been able to get your mind to stop remembering his cheeky squared smile and that aura of a playful child in a large man. It's been 2 weeks now.
Yet you can’t forget him walking up into your courtroom with all that confidence, as if he owned the place.
“Ugh”
“Everything ok?”
You gasped loudly, not having heard Jimin enter the chamber as you mindlessly rolled your mouse around and thought about the man who you sentenced to community service a couple of weeks ago.
“You nearly killed me Jimin!” you voiced a little louder than you should have, the fright still showing in your tone.
“I'm sorry" poor kid, all he did was be nice all day.
“You're fine, I just didn’t hear you come in” you answered, returning to aimlessly move your mouse and stare at the open word document on your computer screen.
“Oh! I see. Well in your favor, I was trying to be quiet. Anyways, what are you doing here so early judge y/n?” leave it to Jimin to always worry about others.
“I thought I could… focus on something else by working a little, but the chambers triggered my distractions even more…” You tried internally to not bring it up, but you knew you had to tell someone about it.
About the fact that maybe you might have an itty-bitty tiny crush on a man you barely saw for a span of 40 minutes and convicted for a crime. You are so lame.
Jimin moved around his desk -you assumed- arranging all of his documents for the day and bring his computer to life.
“and what is it?” he asked you after a couple of minutes of comfortable silence.
“What is what?”
“The distraction that's caught your attention, what is it?” his eyes stared at you widely, they looked so earnest and kind. Just wanting to help you with whatever inconvenience you were having.
“Um… well… you’ll probably think it's dumb"
“I promise I won't” he answered so fast, it felt like he was expecting you to decline opening up to him.
“Well…. I… kinda-have-a-small-crush-on-a-man-I-barely-know-and-could-be-a-scofflaw.”
Your sentence had come out abruptly and in such a rapid fire, that you could see the cogs turning in Jimin’s head as he connected all the things you had said and laced them together.
“Did you just say scofflaw?”
“Is that all you caught from my sentence?” flabbergasted, that's what you were with his reaction.
“No, but… really? scofflaw? Not even judge Harry who's 78 uses that term anymore.”
“Not the point Jimin…" frustrated at the weird turn the conversation had taken, you pinched your nose bridge, trying to figure out the young man's train of thought .
“Ok, ok. But is it one of the guys from a couple of weeks ago. The street racer ones?”
“How do you-"
“Eva from the reception said that, Joyce from finance told her that, Hyerin from chamber 5, saw them being called in on their hearing day and that they were all —her words, not mine— as hot as a super-sized bag of flamin hot Cheetos.”
Now that’s stuck in your mind. Jimin was definitely not helping.
Tumblr media
 “Curse you, procrastination!”
Grocery shopping should have been done weeks ago. But you were tired, and sleepy and distracted and everything in between that could keep you from doing the boring task that  buying your own food was.
Tumblr media
Walking through the aisles in the grocery store, you could hear a little girl talking her —probably parent's— ear off.
Not paying too much attention to her, you were barely able to catch a couple of words here and there as you walked around picking up what you needed.
"Fishies would be a good pet because I can't hu't it if I hug it awound his house"
"Why can't I see my own eyes?"
"Can we get vanilla this time, stwabewies we'e yuck!"
"How do clouds float? Why don't they fall?"
"Look! Look! A toy!"
She sounded so excited and the little lisp with her R's was the cutest, you thought.
You were almost done with your list, only missing some meat or poultry and a pound of potatoes, —'cause you've been craving gratin potatoes for a while and you were done living a life without them.
Making your way to the missing items, you could once again hear a conversation going on between the little girl and the other person, but this time the adult with her spoke. It was a grave voice, very deep and somewhat familiar, yet not enough to put a face to it.
"You are not having a pet, until you understand the responsibilities that come with taking care of an animal" The voice answered the little girl sternly. You could imagine the man's face voided of any emotion and trying to maintain a serious visage. Probably trying to teach his daughter a lesson.
Again, the voice sounded familiar, giving you a tingling sensation in the back of your mind. However, in your distraction, the links that attempted to connect in your mind remained ignored.
You continued rolling your cart, hastily turning around each corner; ready to pick up what you were missing and bolt home to make the delicious meal you have been craving for.
However, you were suddenly stopped by another cart that crashed right into yours as they rushed towards you from around the corner.
"Oof, My bad" - "Oh no! I'm so sorry!"
 You both said in unison.
“Oh...” Came the immediate reaction from both of you, as you noticed who the person you had bumped into was.
"So, the whole you having a daughter wasn’t a lie after all"
"You offend me your honor." Was his reply as he chuckled a bit to himself "But I guess I am not a good example of what a decent human or father should be like..."
"Oh Hush! We all make mistakes. Even some that land us in Jury or court" You giggled a little trying to soften whatever thought had him thinking he was the worst human ever to walk on this earth.
Of course, he had made a mistake —a couple of them at that—   but it wasn’t murder, and he was attempting to make an income for his family.
"What's her name?" You asked him as you both watched her eyeing the fish tank you assumed she saw the fish at before.
"Yoonah. But she prefers to be called Nah-Nah" His voice mellowed. You looked at him with a smirk on your face, but all you got was the sight of a man watching his daughter with the fondest of gazes. So much love could be found in his eyes, he was proud and filled with warmth. The small smiled that decorated his features said it all.
 “Is she your only daughter?”
Your question brought him back to the present.
“Oh, yeah – she is” Was his curt answer. The tone he used made you feel a bit guilty, as if you were way too into his business, so you decided to cut it short.
“Well it was nice meeting you outside of court Mr. Kim –and little miss Yoonah as well.” Were your final words as you waved your hand swiftly and left to finish your shopping, missing entirely the smile that graced his lips when he heard you address his little girl.
For some reason, you hoped to see them one more time before you left the store, just to make sure they were ok —even though there was nothing dangerous at a grocery store.
 --
After so much fussing and so many tantrums, Kim Taehyung was finally tired out.
It could be seen from a mile away, just by watching his shoulders slightly slump and Yoonah grinning up at him with a content expression.
Naturally, the best view of your day was Kim Taehyung walking out of the grocery store with four bags on one shoulder and a small plastic bag in his right hand, filled with water and two gold fish swimming peacefully.
So much for the sterned voice he had back there.
You lingered a little more on your way to your own car, head turning slightly to your left, just to watch him interact with his daughter. You are sure you look like a creep, but it was so endearing, you couldn’t help yourself.
He kept her close by while he loaded the trunk with groceries and tickled her sides while placing her in her car seat. N sight of a father that didn’t care for his daughter or an irresponsible parent. Yeah, that was going to be your excuse for staring longer than needed.
Yet what was a little more time for you, was enough to give him a full view of you watching them both with something in your expression that he couldn’t read, but whatever it was, had his heart racing a little more than it should for somewhat of a stranger that could put him in jail.
Tumblr media
You’re not sure if it’s one of those times where once you meet someone one time, you end up seeing them everywhere.
How is it possible that on a chill evening in the park, while you were enjoying a slow-paced stroll and a hot chocolate in your hands, you see him again. You are about to start thinking that maybe he is following you and in addition to committing his past crime, he is also a stalker.
But he couldn’t be. He’s not even looking at you. From your short distance from him, you can see his eyes trained on something else. A fond smile decorated his lips as if whatever held his attention was above everything in this world.
From this angle you could appreciate his profile. A very handsome man you should say.
His eyes slowly crinkle into smaller half-moons in favor of his now growing smile taking more space. His teeth now baring and the apple of his cheeks flexing.
Oh! what a sight.
What would it feel like to poke them? you thought to yourself.
Yet, your legs had other plans and were already in action. Your brain had already sent signals to your arms and fingers to poke all soft parts that it came into contact with.
You are a judge, for goodness’s sake, touching someone without their authorization is battery. What are you doing?
Yet right before you were able to do so you heard her.
“Daddy!” The soft giggles that followed filled the air that surrounded you. You turned your head to the direction of the sound and just in time you caught the sight of a little girl running from the playground into Taehyung’s arms.
Before you even turned to him, he was already catching her, squeezing her tightly in his embrace.
“Did you see that daddy? I did it!”
“Yes, you did princess! And you were amazing! Best cartwheel I have ever seen!”
The little girl giggled and squealed as Taehyung blew raspberries everywhere around her.
When she finally calmed down, her eyes met yours and her head tilted in questions.
“It’s the groceries lady daddy!”
Turning to look at who his daughter was pointing at, he met you, only 3 steps away from him.
“Jud- Judge Y/n?”
“Hi again Mr. Kim, seems like we keep bumping into each other.”
“So it seems.” Today his smile was a careless one or was it a content one. Either way they were still that remarkable boxy smile.
“Nice to see you again miss Nah-Nah.” You greeted the little girl that had noticed you first and a hearty giggle left her body in return.
“What brings you here?” Asked the man that you had somehow forgotten was by your side or maybe you were just trying to ignore the strong tiger eyes that bore into you by entertaining a conversation with his cute daughter.
“Daddy, can I go to the big slide?”
“Not, without supervision Nah-Nah.” He answered so seriously, it reminded you of the voice in the grocery store.
“But daddy, I am a big gu’l now”
“Nah-Nah…”
“Daddy…” he sighed so loudly; you couldn’t help but laugh at his odyssey.
It was Deja vu from the grocery store and fish all over again. All that big father talk for nothing. He was so whipped for his daughter.
“Ok, let’s make a deal…”
“Yes!”
“You can go to the big slide, but if you get an ‘owie’, I want you to get up and dust off just like big girls do. Ok?”
“Yes, daddy.”
“Ok, princess. Go on”
Not a second went by after his sentence and little Yoonah was already off to an adventure with the rest of the kids in the park.
“She is so precious”
“Thank you”
You both stayed in a comfortable silence, staring into the distance in the direction Yoonah had left of. However, that peace was cut by the man standing near you.
“So, are you following us now your honor?” That playful smirk of his was back, alerting you quickly that he was just attempting at a friendly banter with you.
“Hmm, maybe I am, but I’ll never let you know.” You said winking at him.
He laughed so loud at the action, that you could not hold back a laughter of your own.
“So you do have a sense of humor” He stated after calming down.
“I do, when I am outside of my line of work.”
“Understandable…”
Once again, a comfortable silence fell between you both as you watched his daughter running around filled with glee, playing with other children.
“So, who were the ugly judges you encountered before me?” Now it was your turn to start the conversation and again he laughed. Who would have thought you were this funny.
“So, you did hear that.”
You definitely did and deep within you hoped he meant it. Even though it wasn’t the time or place for his flirting.
“Maybe…”
“I meant it… just in case you were wondering.”
Yes, you were!!!
“Oh! I- umm… Thank you.” You could feel your face heating up, however you refused to end the eye contact you were keeping up since your conversation began.
“Anytime… Like honestly. Any. Time. And every time. I’ll repeat it every time I find it necessary.” He said his smile growing with each word that he sent your way. And you, well you weren’t one to back down on a flirting challenge.
“And how is that possible, if we don’t see each other all the time?” you asked, acting coyly.
“I might have a solution for that, your honor.” Welp. Now you got yourself into something.
Tumblr media
Two weeks had gone by since that day.
Two weeks after Mr. Kim had asked for your number and invited you for ice cream with Yoonah, under the excuse of a thank you for not sending him to jail. Needless to say, you quickly corrected his statement to not have him think this was a favor you had done for him, but a decision you had made based on evidence and circumstances surrounding the case.
It had also been a week since Mr. Kim changed from that name to Taehyung.
The mocking that came with you saying his given name for the first time was endless.
“Awww, so no more Mr. Kim?”
“Shut it Taehyung!”

Continuing Kikuchi-sensei's book 'Strongly, beautifully,....'
Chapter 3
3.4  Looking at deviations of the torso 3.5  Icing as a recovery method (not translating these 2 sections;  I may come back to do them after I have done the parts that interest me most.)
3.6  Experiencing the world's stage as trainer
The season after Sochi Olympics, that is, 2014-15 season.  It was hard for Yuzuru to get into good condition.  The 1st competition, Finlandia Trophy, he withdrew because of back pain.  Yuzuru was in Canada and I did not know of his injury.  I only knew about it from the news.
But, one week before GP series Cup of China, held in November 2014 in Shanghai, I received a message on my smartphone.
"Sensei, can you come to the competition in Shanghai please?" "Didn't you say that the Canadian trainer will accompany you?" I replied.   After a while, "Sensei, come to Shanghai and do treatment for me please....?"
Because in the previous season, he had told me, "For competitions in Japan, please may I have your care, but for overseas competitions, the trainer in Canada will go with me, is that alright?"  Perhaps he felt a sense of guilt.  He was probably fiddling with Pooh-san's ear and hesitating for some time before sending the message.
"Alright, I understand. I will be there," I replied.  I cancelled all my plans for the week ahead and went to Shanghai.
After a long absence, when I touched his legs, I felt the confirmation of his evolution, and also, in my heart, I felt some sense of relief that I could do treatment for Yuzuru again.
2014 December, GP series NHK Trophy in Osaka.  Yuzuru, far from ideal condition, headed for competition.  His short programme was only 78.01,  and with scores lower than any he had in recent time, he finished in 4th place.  He managed to qualify for the GP Final in Barcelona which was for only the top skaters of the GP series.
Right after NHK Trophy was over, Yuzuru came to my hotel room.
"Sensei, can you also come with me for the Final?" he said. "Oh?  For Europe, the other sensei (Canada) will go with you, didn't you say that?"  I was also being mean. "But, sensei,........" his eyes made the plea. "Ah, seems like it's unavoidable, shall I go to Spain and see Sagrada Familia as well?"
In this way, I was called back to be Yuzuru's personal trainer. From then on, for competitions in Japan and overseas, support for Yuzuru was done by me.  Well, to him, I think it's because he has known me since he was little, and calling me "sensei, sensei" is easy and comfortable.  But to me, it became a major event that happened in my life.
3.7 PyeongChang Olympic season, starts
2017-18 season, also an Olympic season.  First competition, Autumn Classic, Yuzuru had a world record score of 112.72 for his short programme, breaking the previous record which was held by himself.  The media, in anticipation of a 2nd Olympic gold, saw it as a good start towards PyeongChang Olympics, but......
After Autumn Classic, I met Yuzuru;  his body that had been loaded with training, headed for competition at GP series Rostelecom Cup, could not be said to be in very good condition.
That not-ideal condition indicated the pressure of a 2nd Olympic win.  In summer, he was pushing himself hard and the body was very overworked.  The thoughts of 'must win' put a great burden on his legs.  Putting multiple quadruple jumps into his programme layout was extremely demanding on the ankles.
I thought it was not so hard to win at PyeongChang Olympics if he maintained the level of record-breaking 2015-16 NHK Trophy and GPF.   It seems his coaches also told him "you don't have to overdo it to that extent".
But, Yuzuru thoroughly pushes himself hard.  "Not doing it, is not me" he says and continues to practise so that he can raise the level.  Even if someone said "stop!" he would still continue to skate.
The Olympics becoming a heavy burden, there was not a single word of this from Yuzuru's mouth.  He did not show it even in his behaviour.  But when I touched his legs, I knew.  To what extent was the harsh training  he had put in.
For Yuzuru who has an overabundance of fighting spirit, I felt a sense of uneasiness.  Unfortunately, my premonition came true.  2017 November, GP series NHK Trophy in Osaka, during official practice, he fell on a quad lutz.  The ligaments  of his right foot were damaged.
After he was injured, we were talking and joking and laughing.  If we did not keep the mood cheerful, Yuzuru would be too pitiful.  When he fell, I knew it was a serious injury.  If it was the usual sprain, my treatment could help in some way.  But not this time.  Yuzuru had to withdraw from NHK Trophy.  The trainer from Canada and a doctor took care of him and I returned to Sendai.
A long recovery period was needed for his foot.  He was absent for Japan nationals.  He remained in Toronto, undergoing treatment, and prepared for the Olympics.  I could not be at peace.  The condition of his injury, I only knew about it from the news, as usual.
It was about a month and a half before PyeongChang Olympics.  Yuzuru's father, holding a form for registering the size of sportswear and blazer for the Japanese delegation, came to my clinic.  Same as 4 years ago for Sochi Olympics.  "How is Yuzuru?"  I asked, but Yuzuru's father only smiled and nodded, as he always does.
But it was definite that Yuzuru would compete at the Olympics.  What I could do was, no matter what the situation, to send him into the rink in the best condition.  And I was ready.

3.8  Do carefully one by one
The free skate at PyeongChang was at an earlier timing than the usual competitions, and the practice started from 8.25am.  Without getting all worked up like at Sochi, I could face it calmly this time.  That morning, the taping for him was completed at first try.
Yuzuru did not say anything.  Of course, his foot could not be said to be in very good condition.  My role was to help him get the ideal feeling that he wanted in his legs and I believe it went very well.  Warming-up also had no problems.
Supporting Yuzuru's beautiful performances are his well-trained body and senses.  Elegant jumps and spins are created by his steady torso and ability to sense tiny differences.  These are important for flowing movements.  That is why Yuzuru is always concerned about the training of the torso and any deviations.
And so, about one year before PyeongChang Olympics, torso awareness training was introduced into the warm-up schedule.  There was a video showing Yuzuru sitting on a bucket with wheels and moving around;  that was one of it.  People who saw it may have thought,  "What is he playing?"
That is a custom-made product, a bucket-shaped chair fitted with wheels used for wheelchair basketball.  To move around freely on it, one has to be very conscious of the transverse abdominal muscles that surround the abdomen, the erector spinae muscles that support the spine, and other such parts of the torso;  it is a training device.  It is well-known that the balance ball is effective for conditioning the torso. However, it is not enough for a torso that supports the flowing movements of figure skating.  Quadruple jumps do not go directly above the head.  They go forward 3 to 4 metres while rotating.  And so, (thinking) can't we condition the torso while moving forward, backward, left and right, this bucket-chair was developed.
Tumblr media
Usually I would say "next, bucket", and Yuzuru would sit on it and move around, like writing the character "ハ"   (t/n. this is number 8 in kanji).  At the warm-up of the short programme, he jokingly said, "Sensei, I've become good at this."  For the free skate warm-up, even though I did not give the instruction, he himself went to sit on it and started moving around quietly.  What he did was exactly the same as how I had pictured it in my mind.
As he often says, "When I am focused, I know very clearly what I need to do."
The last part of warm-up was always, still in gym shoes, jumping straight up with rotations on the spot.  Doing this, one will know if there is any shift in the body's axis.
At this time, I once again felt "this guy is incredible..." and got goosebumps all over.
In the tension, there must have been countless times of feeling almost crushed by the considerable pressure.  Nevertheless, he spent his days pushing himself hard, and studying and researching all that he could.  And raise himself higher, refine his skills, brutally overwork his body......  4 years of it, for the sake of this moment.
Perfectly conditioned.  To Yuzuru who was heading to the middle of the rink for his free skate, the only thing I could do was to say, "(You're) alright, so just do carefully one by one."   But I don't know if he heard me.

Extra Ordinary
Fandom: Choices - Foreign Affairs
Pairing: F!Blaine Hayes x M!MC (Magnus Quezon)
Rating: G
Summary: Blaine and Magnus sneak off to a traveling fair.
Notes: Inspired by a message from @i-cant-think-of-a-name-15 wherein he told me I could write about "a purple panda visiting Vancross" and he'd still read about it, so I was minorly inspired. This is much longer than what I've written and posted here so far, so fair warning on that.
----------
"A fair?"
Magnus raised an eyebrow at Dionne, who clutched her phone as she showed him her text messages from Blaine.
"Yeah, she said she got tickets the other day, arranged for you two to go, and everything! It's only in town for a week, and tonight's the last night before they pack everything up the next day."
Before he could even object -- the thought of everyone still breathing down his neck about the scandal and cleaning up his image still weighing heavily on his mind -- she interrupted, "You don't have any classes tomorrow, you’re free, and you need the break! Plus it'll be so romantic, just you and Blaine--"
"And our bodyguards."
"--Having the time of your lives at a fair! Come on, it'll be fun, Magnus! Like you're gonna say no to her."
Okay, she's got him there.
It only took a little bit of pleading to get Tatum to agree to his antics this time, rolling his eyes as if he was used to it at that point. Nevertheless, he escorted the First Son to the pier where the fair grounds were, dressed as casually and inconspicuously as possible.
Magnus adjusted his sunglasses and beanie, glancing behind him to see if his bodyguard was right behind, only to find him gone. He did say he was just going to keep a "respectable distance", but it didn't make him any less nervous being out and about like this. It wasn't that he didn't trust his date to show up, it was that he was worried that she would and so would the paparazzi. They haven't exactly relented on their quest to squeeze out every juicy detail of his story.
He tried to scan the crowd for any sign of Blaine, only to be suddenly grabbed by the arm. He stumbled back in surprise, accidentally bumping into a mother with her kids. "Sorry sorry, I'm so sorry miss!" he quickly apologized, but the lady left in a huff, and he found himself face to face with none other than the mastermind of this operation.
"Geez, I forgot how you scared so easily. Sorry about that," Blaine remarked, clearly amused. Magnus could only roll his eyes, but was nonetheless relieved to find her -- or rather, have her find him.
He had to admire her insistence on the whole plan, and the fact that she had a plan in the first place. Of course, they couldn't get away from their bodyguards and had to effectively hide any prominent features of theirs to avoid being recognized, but hey, he would take any excuse to be with her.
"We've got a lot of ground to cover if we wanna make the most of this place," Blaine said. They made their way inside hand in hand.
"I'm starting to feel bad, leaving you with all the work of planning out covert dates. I should return the favor some time," Magnus said with a small laugh, taking in the sights and smells around him. The sun was beating down on every head present, hung up on a bright blue sky. It was quite crowded, which was a security concern, but it also meant it would be harder for untrained eyes to spot them in the sea of faces. Still, it had him a bit on edge.
"Looking forward to whatever you've got cooking up there, Rutherland. I'm sure you can think of something." Blaine looked up at the rides, the screams of its passengers intriguing her to give the experience a shot. It would also help to distract Magnus, as she noticed he was rather tense. "Where do you wanna go first?"
Magnus wasn't always the type to try to impress a date, but he might have been pushing it a little when he suggested an octopus ride. "I've never ridden one before. My mom always said they would break and the cart I'd be in would fly off."
It felt that way as soon as the ride started too. Magnus held onto the safety bar in front of them for dear life, his insides doing massive flips with every rotation. It was very thrilling, but it was also a strangely ticklish sensation that had him laughing and screaming the whole time. Blaine was having the time of her life, on the other hand, raising both arms in the air at multiple points as she whooped and jokingly yelled for it to go faster. Their excited screams blended in with the cacophony of the other riders, and somehow, that made the First Son feel the most normal he had since the day started.
If you were to ask him, Magnus would deny how his hands were shaking as they got off the ride, remnants of that thrill and momentary terror still running through his body. But it helped to have Blaine take both his hands and encouraged him to breathe deeply instead of the usual teasing he expected from her.
"Do you go on octopus rides often?" he asked, sucking in another breath before exhaling slowly.
"I'm actually more of a lazy river kind o' girl, but I love the adrenaline rush anyway," she casually replied, trying her best to ground him and calm his racing heart and stomach.
The two of them decided to eat some snacks as a substitute for lunch, settling for corn dogs, cotton candy, and watermelon slices. Along the way, Magnus spotted a giant panda stuffed toy in one of the game booths, its usual black patches replaced with a bright purple. Blaine followed his distracted gaze and giggled, trying to get his attention. “See something you like?”
The Rutherlandian chuckled sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck. “I, uh... it’s a giant panda, kinda hard to miss.” He was trying his best not to seem too obvious about his curiosity and desire to have it. However, after passing by the same booth a few more times as they explored the grounds, with his attention inevitably drifting to the toy, Blaine took him there herself to see if she can win it for him.
“You don’t have to--”
“Just let me do this for you. Besides, not like you can keep your eyes off of it.”
A laugh escaped him, “Are you telling me you’re jealous of a stuffed toy panda now?”
“I’m literally gonna win it for you, Rutherland, I am the farthest from being jealous. I promise by the end of the night, you'll be one panda richer.”
Basketball was the name of the game -- all she had to do was sink three shots in a row through the hoop across. Simple enough, if only she weren’t so far away from behind the starting line. Every time she threw the ball and watched it soar through the air, it was always just a few feet shy of the goal. By the time Blaine was on her sixth total attempt, she was just slamming the cash on the counter in frustration to pay for more chances, which the manager gladly accepted each time.
Magnus tried to get her to stop, insisting that it was fine and she didn’t need to waste so much money on a game “that was clearly rigged anyway.”
“Hey, I promised I’d get you that, and goddammit you are gonna get it!” she stubbornly replied, setting down another two dollars. This time though, she took a pause to rest and re-think her strategy.
Blaine furrowed her eyebrows, her focus alternating between the ball and the hoop, until an idea struck her. A wide mischievous smirk appeared on her face as she pinned the ball under her arm and climbed onto the counter, much to everyone's surprise.
"Hey, you're not allowed up there, miss!" the man behind the stand yelled, holding a hand up. The Ardonian was undeterred.
"Why? I'm still behind the line," she pointed out.
"You could fall and get hurt, you have to--" Magnus started, but Blaine was already focused on her goal, ball in hand as she lifted it up.
The height certainly gave her an advantage, taking one successful shot after another, despite the manager's and Magnus' protests. Her date still hung back right behind her, arms slightly raised to ready himself just in case. If she was so insistent on doing things her way, hopefully it wouldn't end in a hospital visit. She would hear an occasional "be careful!" between shots, but when she finally got the last one she needed, she practically threw caution to the wind after the ball.
“Victory is mine, asshole!” she yelled in triumph, throwing her arms up in the air in celebration.
She didn't anticipate how the momentum would throw her off balance though, misstepping behind her. She yelped and tried to move forward, but it was too late. One second she was falling back toward the ground, then the next... she was in Magnus' arms.
She looked up at him and laughed, "Good catch. You work out?" she commented with a wink, letting him help her stand back up.
"Let's just say you can always trust me to catch you," he replied with a hint of a flirtatious tone, before nudging her with his elbow. "But never do that again," he warned, though he was clearly just worried about her.
The Ardonian flipped her hair over her shoulder, turning her attention to the manager. "One panda, my good sir!"
He begrudgingly handed over the stuffed toy to Blaine, who then proceeded to proudly present it to Magnus. He had to wrap both arms around its fluffy torso just to be able to hold onto it securely.
"Consider this my apology for worrying you," she joked, patting the toy's fluffy arm.
"This feels a bit cliche, doesn't it?" he said, his voice partially muffled by the huge obstruction between them.
"What do you mean? It's a role reversal. It's the guy usually winning prizes for the girl, right?"
"I just mean the situation in general. Do you always win giant pandas for your dates?"
"Only for you, babe. Though I'll happily take it back if you don't want it."
At that, Magnus turned and kept it away from Blaine when she tried to reach for it. "No, you already gave it to me, so keepsies." He stuck his tongue out at her, looking more childish than ever, which earned him a boop on the nose.
"One more ride for the road?"
It was already sunset by the time they got on the ferris wheel. The sky was a gradient of pink, orange, and yellow as the sun started to set, slowly sinking in the horizon where the sky met the sea. It took some convincing for the ride manager to allow the stuffed toy on board, as long as they didn't drop it -- like Magnus was ever going to let that happen.
The newly christened Taro (as Magnus insisted on calling the panda) sat on his side, with Blaine snuggled on the other, her head settled on his shoulder. The ride moved slowly as other passengers boarded, and they were getting close to the top, just enough to enjoy the view.
"I know the rooftops at Vancross had great views of sunsets, but nothing beats being this close to it, huh?" Blaine said, her fingers idly playing with Magnus', intertwining and untwining them.
"Being in great company helps me appreciate it more too," Magnus replied, before turning to the stuffed toy next to him, sitting at eye level given its size. "Isn't that right, Taro?"
"Sorry, am I ruining your moment here?" she joked, gently nudging at his arm. Magnus simply smiled and wrapped an around her shoulders, pulling her even closer to his side.
"But seriously though, today was really fun. I'm glad you convinced Dionne to convince me to come out here. At this point, it's hard to say no to even just seeing you."
"Even if it means infuriating your bodyguard?"
Magnus rolled his eyes, looking off as the sky started to darken. "He wasn't infuriated, I'd say irritated at best, but he gets it. He's always been supportive of my 'be a normal person' agenda."
"Did I help deliver?"
"Oh definitely. You sure know how to make a guy feel normal, in a good way."
Blaine glanced up at him, "What does being normal mean to you?"
The young man blinked, not expecting such an introspective question. The lights on the ferris wheel started to turn on, giving him a view of Blaine under their soft glow. He almost lost himself in the sight and backtracked on the question.
He gave himself a moment to think, choosing his words carefully, "Just... being able to live my life away from scrutinizing eyes, I guess. I don't want the public to see me as someone or something that I'm not just because some tabloid article told them this or that."
She nodded in understanding, pulling his arm closer. "Definitely. It's like the general population seems to forget we're people too. We have our own lives and identities, and it's not something that can be toyed with."
"I wish I didn't have to act a certain way, I don't want them to change me. I wish... things were different." A bout of silence passed between them, the ride moving at its leisurely pace to give its passengers time to appreciate it.
"But if they were, then I never would've met you, so it's not all bad. You're... one of the best things that's ever happened to me, you know?" Magnus looked at Blaine, a small yet genuine smile on his face. The girl looked up at him almost with a flicker of doubt at first, but looking deeper into his eyes, she knew he was telling the truth.
And she wasn't sure how to handle that.
She could feel her stomach doing flips, a thrill running through her -- except it wasn't like she was on a fair ride. This was somehow more intense, yet she felt grounded with him by her side. She couldn't help the smile that bloomed, her cheeks darkening slightly as she took in his words.
"You're too good, Magnus. I hope the world never changes you."
The way she said his name sounded almost adoring, like she was in awe of what a genuine soul he was despite everything that's happened to him. She knew what it was like, having been expected to keep up appearances her whole life, but somehow this boy right next to her never seemed to lose touch of himself along the way. He knew what he had to do, but he also knew who he was at the end of the day.
Just hearing her say it like that was enough to melt Magnus' insides with a loving warmth. A smile spread across his face, leaning forward to press a soft kiss on her lips. He was just so relieved that he never had to pretend around Blaine, never had to prove anything to her. It was more than enough just having her there by his side, and even though he was looking forward to the day he can finally be out with her in public with pride, moments like these made their secret trips still worth going through.
.
.
.
(Due to Taro's size, it couldn’t quite fit in Magnus' bed as intended, so it instead resided on the couch in the suite. It didn't mean he didn't take any chances to nap on it though.
Dionne has sent many pictures to Blaine of the young man's face buried into its fluffy stomach, curled up on the small space as he rested peacefully, and Blaine has had to stifle many squeals of delight at the adorable sight.)

It’s you.
SallyxReader
Pt 1/2
Smut (in next chapter 👀)
Slight angst
AFAB/cis girl reader. I’m sorry I shamelessly wrote this as a self insert at 5 am half asleep because of a dream I had so... yeah. Don’t worry I got you guys and non-binary friends covered in the future I promise 💙
Sally gets a little angsty but it comes back around I promise.
— — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — —
You, Sally, and Larry were chilling in the basement playing video games and smoking a bowl. Your night had gone as usual. Friendly teasing and poking fun at eachother. However things quickly escalate when Larry decides to poke Sals buttons in the way he knows will get him REALLY pissed
— — —
“Laaaarrryyyy!”
You let out a whine of protest. Larry just killed you for the third time in a row after countless efforts to steal his flag. He was camping, and it was pissing you off.
He leaned back in his beanbag and set his controller down with a sigh.
“That’s just the way of the game babygirl”
You rolled your eyes and followed suit. Leaning back, you crossed your arms and let out a defeated huff.
“You know I don’t like it when you call me that...”
Larry chuckled.
“That’s why I do it. To get on your nerves!”
Before he could finish his statement he had already lunged at you to give you a Noogie.
“Pfft.”
The both of you look towards an aggravated Sally. He was sitting on Larry’s bed flipping through a guitar catalog. Even though you couldn’t see his facial expression, you could always tell when he was feeling a certain way.
“So are you guys gonna kiss or something or can we wrap this up”
“SALLY!”
“What? You act like there isn’t a thick, suffocating smog of sexual tension in this room right n- HEY! What the fuck!?”
You threw your shoe at him.
Larry grabbed the bowl from his pocket and began to pack it.
“Is it that time of month again Mrs. Fisher?”
Sally grumbled under his breath and slammed the catalog shut
“Fuck you guys.”
He stomped over to where you and Larry were sitting. Larry lit the bowl and took a few tokes as Sally plopped on the ground and sat criss cross.
Larry laughed and coughed at the same time.
“Oh so your just gonna swear me out then smoke up all my pot?!”
Sal rolled his eyes.
“You owe me for last week anyway.”
Laughing one more time, Larry nodded and passed the pipe to you.
“You know I’m just messing with you right? I’m not actually into Y/N.”
“As if I’d give a shit.”
That one stung a little bit. You and Sally had known eachother for about four years now. At the beginning of Sophomore year you were the new kid at nockfell and Sally immediately was looking out for you. He was so kind to you all the time and he made sure you were always comfortable and safe. Of course you had formed a crush on him. How could you not? He was perfect, from his cute mannerisms, to his kind soul, and let’s not forget that adorable hair style. Nowadays things were different though. Anytime you wanted to get close to him he’d end up getting annoyed and push away. You had suspicions that Sally could have a crush on you since he got EXTRA annoyed when Larry flirted with you, but just incase that wasn’t true, you decidied you would never bring it up. You still valued Sally’s friendship and you weren’t willing to mess that up just because of some mixed signals.
“Ouch.”
You passed the pipe to Sally.
Things got awkwardly quiet for a while as the pipe mad a few rotations.
“Well... I’ve the munchies and I could go for a 7/11 slurpee right about now. Want anything while I’m out?”
Larry stood up and grabbed his keys.
“Cherry.”
“I’m good, but thank you”
Larry sighed and eyed the both of you before opening the door.
“Hahhhh... suit yourselves.”
The door closed with a click and suddenly you and Sally were left alone in silence.
The two of you sat quietly passing the pipe to eachother until Sal broke the silence.
“Damn, the bowls done. Larry has the pot on him so we’re out of luck.”
He got up and walked to the bed, throwing his body on it upon arrival causing the bed to bounce a few times.
The awkward silence continued for a while longer. You looked at Sal. He was staring up at the ceiling with his arm tucked behind his head. You thought to yourself “Wow he looks comfy.” Looking back on your highschool days, you and Sal used to be very close. Both of you were so touched starved that whenever either of you were sad about something, you would cuddle and talk it out. All of it was strictly plutonic, but nevertheless, you missed those days dearly.
This time it was your turn to break the silence.
“Hey Sal.”
“Yeah?”
His voice was so low and raspy. It was one of your favorite parts about him. It always sounded like he was sleep deprived and groggy, which he was.
“I’m a little sad. Can we talk?”
“... Sure”
You walk over to the bed and sit on the edge. Extending your arms bashfully. You hadn’t asked him to cuddle in a long time. Waaaay before he started acting all angsty so you weren’t sure how this was going to end. Hopefully with your head on his chest.”
Sally looked confused for a second. He huffed, contemplating whether he should accept or decline. Thankfully he opened his arms back to you. You smiles and cuddled up to him. You laid your head on his chest and wrapped your arms around his waist. You listened to his breathing. How you missed listening to the slow in and out of his breath and his thumping heart beat in the background. He placed his hand on your head and raked his fingers through your hair.
“So, what’s up.”
“Well I was going to ask you if you didn’t like me anymore but I think it’s safe to say you don’t hate me since we’re cuddling again.”
Sal let out a soft chuckle.
“No this is a pity cuddle... What did you think this is was?”
You both laughed. Burying your head into his neck you rephrased your question.
“No, but really. Why are you being so mean nowadays? Did I do something wrong?”
Sally sighed and took of his prosthetic. You had already seen his face plenty of times. Sadly it was another thing that had become a rarity nowadays. You could now comfortably bury your face in his neck without a big hunk of plastic in your way.
“I don’t know if I’m being honest... Well I can guess... I’ve been on new meds, nightmares have gotten worse recently. I don’t know, Larry has been pissing me off too lately.”
“Oh.”
Sal took a deep breath and let it back out.
“And... there’s this girl.”
“G-girl?”
“Yeah...”
“Oh...”
“She’s really funny and cute and I like her a lot and she makes my heart melt and my heart beat gets faster when i’m around her and I just don’t know what to do because I’m no where near ready for a relationship right now.”
“Wow... that’s a lot to take in.”
“Sorry...”
“It’s okay.”
Sally rolled onto his side and pulled you closer to him, cradling your head close to his chest.
“What do I do?”
You stayed silent, processing all of the information the he just spewed at you. After thinking about it for a while you knew what you had to tell him. You wanted him to be happy, and if his happiness was with some other girl, you were okay with that.
“Do you think she’s willing to wait?”
“Mayb-”
“Tell her. Tell her to wait for you. If she really cares enough she’ll wait till your ready.”
“Really?”
“Yes.”
“Alright...”
At some point during that exchange a tear had fallen down your cheek. It really hurt to let go of him. The boy you’ve been crushing on since Sophomore year, but you needed to let him go.
You sat up.
“Well if that’s the case we should probably get farther away from eachother, huh?”
You force a laugh and begin to scoot away but Sal grabs your arm.
“Yes, Sally?”
Sally’s face was red and his palm that was placed on your arm was sweaty.
“Well... why would I need to do that when she’s... sitting right here?”
“Wha-”
“It’s you, Y/N. Your the girl...”
Your mind went blank. Malfunction. Now way he just said that.
“Well, I already told you that I’m not ready for a relationship but if your willing to wait...”
“Can I kiss you.”
Sal sat there quietly, surprised that you had the balls to just say that. He made a noise in the back of his throat before laughing.
“Yes, please do.”
He cups your cheeks, pulled you close and gently kissed you. You hadn’t ever kissed anyone so gentle before. It was nice. Gentle, like him, the old Sally.
He pulled away and looked at you with a wide grin.
“How was that?”
“Better then I ever imagined”
“Uuuuuhhhh...”
Larry stood at the doorway holding two slurpees, his mouth hanging wide open.
“Larry!!”
“What the FUCK did I miss?”

Love Drug - Jeff Atkins
-
@anisiamoisa SAID: ‘I wanted to request a Jeff Atkins imagine where they take the love drug (season two episode 7 I think) with Clay, Hannah, Alex and Sheri. Maybe some smut too’
-
Warnings!: Just some cute smutty shit really, and mentions of drug use!
-
Sometimes when being around someone, you start to feel exactly how they feel. In this case, being with Clay makes me anxious as hell. He’s walking with his hands twiddling through each other, and he’s made his body look incredibly small. “Are you alright Clay?” I giggle. By the look on his face, I’d say no. “I’m fine,” I look across to Hannah, who was walking the other side of him. She shrugs, which makes me laugh. “It’s okay to be nerv-” “it’s just that we don’t know where these drugs have come from. We could die!” He explodes as we get outside Jeff’s house. “I don’t think Jeff is tryna kill us Clay,” me and Hannah laugh along together. “If you die, at least you can haunt him,” I add, nudging him on the shoulder. “You are NOT helping!”
“There she is!” Jeff woo’s as I walk in. The ‘pointing’ makes me blush massively. Huge arms wrap themselves around my waist, pulling me in as close as he can. About three or four kisses get placed in several places on my face, before turning to Clay and Hannah. “Hey guys, welcome,” he says ‘normally’. “I see how it is; favouritism,” Clay mutters, which makes me laugh too much. “Oh Clay’s jealous!” The grip is removed from me, and I witness his arms wrap around Clay, lifting him up slightly. “Do you want one, Hannah?” He offers once he lets Clay’s feet touch the ground again. “I’m good, but thank you,” Jeff doesn’t care, and gives Hannah a hug anyway. I swear my boy is too pure for this world.
Once Sheri and Alex arrive, we sit in a circle-ish. Hannah sits next to Clay, then Alex, then Sheri, and Jeff sits between my legs. Playing with Jeff’s hair is honestly one of my favourite things. Once again, Clay is twiddling his thumbs. “Clay-” “isn’t sugar and caffeine a kind of high, right?” he blurts out. I watch Hannah out her hand over Clay’s, which makes his eyes widen. Seeing Clay all caught up with Hannah is so cute. He should honestly just go for it. But then again, this is Clay we’re on about. Never gonna happen. “Jenson, would I ever lead you astray?” I lock hands with Jeff, intertwining our fingers tightly together. He raises them. My heart melts more as he places a kiss on each of the backs of my hands. One on each. I smile to myself. He loosens his grip, letting my hand slid away as he stands up. Reaching into his pocket, he takes out a small clear bag with white pills in there. He passes on to each of us, leaving Clay till last. “This peer pressure.” He shakes his head. He takes the pill anyway, but you can see the clear uncertainty in his face. And his voice. And his everything really. “I’m not gonna force you Jenson,” Jeff sits back with me, but hints me to shuffle forwards instead. Once he places himself behind me, I decide this is my chance to take the comfiest seat there is... Jeff Atkins’ lap. “But it’ll be good for you.” In no more - or less - than a ‘three, two, one’, each of us had swallowed our drug. Clay hesitated, as if he was seeing if we were all gonna take it, but he took it nevertheless. And now we wait.
It was a fast turn around this time. I almost felt it as soon as I gulped it down. And now we sit laughing and giggling about shit that isn’t really funny. “You’re friends,” pause, “with Justin Foley.” Jeff cries in laughter to Alex. I’m not sure why it’s funny, but we all laugh along anyway. “He’s an asshole,” Alex shakes his head with a massive smile. “He is...” I look over to Sheri, who you can tell is thinking. “He’s kinda hot though?” I shake my head, which makes Jeff nudge me in the side. “You don’t think Foley’s hot?!” He gasps. I turn to him, locking eyes. I put each hand on either side of his face. Pause. And... “nope.” I say simply. He raises his eyebrows, as if it’s totally unbelievable that I don’t find him attractive. “But, no one compares to you, my love,” I cringily whisper into his ear. I feel his smile widen across his face. I turn to gaze into his eyes, face to face. “You two are disgustingly adorable,” Hannah throws a pillow our way.
We continue to laugh for what seems like a long time, but it’s actually only 10/15 minutes. The drug makes you just feel entirely positive. Like this is where you’re meant to be, right in this moment. I am with the right people in this basement. And I’ve hardly ever hung out with Sheri, or Alex, or Hannah. Clay though, Clay’s around a little bit. I get pulled out of my trance with a poke in my back. Fiercely, I snap my head around to face Jeff. “What are you thinking about?” He whispers, touching my face with his nose. Feeling his breath against my face sends my body in a whole other place. Somehow, even in my high state of mind, I swivel myself a bit too smoothly so I’m facing him. Now I’m straddled against his body. “About how cute your’s and Clay’s friendship is,” giggling, I bury my head into his shoulder. When he moves his hands across my body I feel the enhancement of that happy little pill. They cross from my thighs, to my hips, to waist in one very swift movement. That’s all. And it feels incredible. “He’s obsessed with me,” Clay’s voice sounds distant, although he’s just over 2 metres away. All I’m focussed on is the way Jeff’s hands feel on my body. I just want him close. Closer. “You love me though Jenson,” Jeff turns his head back to mine, and they are instantly practically touching. All I can seem to do is gaze into those beautiful eyes. If I was sober, I’d be cringing at myself. But I love this guy. “What are you thinking about now?” Shivers get sent down my spine by the whispers that flowed into my ear. A small smirk appears and disappears off his face. “You,” I smile, and blush, and try not to go into a giggle mess. “Me?” I bite my lip slightly and nod. “You’re too cute,” he kisses my cheek, then on my jawline, then once on my neck. And that’s all I needed. When our eyes lock once again, and our noses touch ever so slightly, I just can’t take it no more. I’m so in love with this guy. “I think we should-” is all I can say before he hops up, takes my hands, and we start walking upstairs.
Jeff walks into his bedroom first. I follow, pushing my entire body weight onto the door for it to close. It’s not heavy or anything. When I turn I see my beautiful boyfriend sat on the bed. I watch as his eyes scan my body from top to toe. My body sways as I walk towards him, and his gaze doesn’t change. “Stop! You’re making me embarrassed!” I push him on the shoulder. Soft hands embrace my still clothed hips. “You’re so beautiful,” whispering, he guides my body onto his, into a straddling position once again. My index finger goes to his lips, shushing him. The problem with pretty boy over here is he doesn’t shut up. So even when I shush him, he continues being absolutely fucking adorable. “I could look at you all day,” he shrugs. “Oh you could?” I question, pushing his chest down so he’s with his back against the bed. His hands proceed to smooth up and down my thighs as I’m leant over his with my clothes crotch on top of his. When they connect, Jeff’s face looks almost pleasured already. “You’re literally like a work of art,” he leans up to mutter into my ear. Before I can even reply, he rotates us so he’s on top. A kiss gets placed on my cheek. Another on my jawline. And another on my neck. A shockwave of pleasure gets sent through my body as I feel his tongue press against a very nice spot. Jeff knows my body better than I do. My hands go to the back of his neck. And then I realise that this isn’t what I want. Gently lifting his head, our eyes meet once again. Then I attach my lips onto his... finally.
Sometimes foreplay is a bit long. Sometimes it feels a little dirty. Sometimes you just wanna actually have a sensual moment. I wanna make love to my boyfriend. Especially in my cloud 9 state. His tongue glides along mine effortlessly. His hands smoothing from my waist to my hips to my thighs feels better than it ever has. Euphoria x100. In motion, he slips a hand to the front of my jeans, unbuttoning them and throwing them off. I giggle against his lips as they launch onto the floor. In a minuscule moment where his lips aren’t fix onto mine, I tug at the end of his tee. My hands magnetise onto the abs on his stomach with haste. The smile on Jeff’s face grows, but he presses his lips together in attempt to contain it. “What?” I whisper. “That kinda tickles,” my face: crimson.
In another supersonic action, my thong was on the floor. As was his joggers. All that remained between us was his boxers. And within seconds they had vanished too. “I love you,” I kiss him once. “So much,” I add, placing my lips against his in a lengthy kiss. You could hear it scream with passion and desire. Excitement rushed through my body as I finally feel his penis start to go inside me. My mouth widens to inhale a slightly deep breath of air. Having Jeff this close... I just know he’s mine. The pining kiss continued until he was fully inside. Eye to eye, nose to nose, I gaze up to him and smile. I get lost in the moment. This. This is perfection. There’s no place I’d rather be. No person I’d rather be with. This is it. Before anything, he stamps my forehead with a kiss. One, two, three. “You are so enthralling,” I look at him and frown with the biggest smile. “Enthral- what?” When I begin to giggle, he actually begins to blush. “Clay taught me it. It means, like, fascinating,” he explains. Which just makes my heart melt. I stick my bottom lip out in a sad motion. “What?” He nudges his nose against mine. “You’re just so cute,” I pin my lips back against his. Deep feelings of just pining for the godly specimen on top of me oozes through between the connection of our tongues.
My mouth widens as he begins to thrust himself out, and back in. He proceeds to place wet kisses against and around my lips. The heaviness of my breath correlates with the hand sliding up and down my thigh. Every touch sends an unexplainable feeling through my body. It must be the perfect blend of adrenaline, that love hormone and whatever the fuck drug I’m on. But I can’t focus on that. I can’t focus on anything but the fact that I’m in love with this boy. I’m making love to the boy that I love. The way he squeezes my thigh and my waist. I almost completely come undone when he lifts my right leg up slightly. “Fuck,” I moan against his tender lips. My fingers spread through his hair, pulling slightly more at every inch of pleasure pumping through my body. I know that I’m completely under his spell. I like it here.
I wrap my legs around his body more and more. Even though he’s as close as he can get, I’d try anything to get him closer. With every thrust I find myself not only a moaning mess, but falling for a boy that I’ve already fallen hard for. It’s like that excitement you get when you see a boy for the first time. And I don’t know what comes over me, but I flip us around so I end up being on top. My chest: flat against his. All I can do is smile cheekily. The thing with us is, we know each other. So I begin moving up and down on his manhood. Both of his hands go to my waist, guiding me at a steady pace. “Oh my god,” he rolls his eyes back. It’s nice to know I have some sort of hold on him, as back as that probably sounds. “You’re so beautiful,” kisses are placed all over my face, but mainly on my lips. Our tongues dance to the rhythm of our own beat. “Fuck Y/N,” this does it for me. His words send my body over the edge, pushing my insides to climax. As if it was in sync, Jeff reaches his too. I ride out both of our highs.
I throw myself down next to him. “You’re incredible, you know that?” He presses my body close to his. He feels like a dream. Or maybe it’s the very slightly delay of these drugs. Everything is just... more. “I think I just fell in love with you more,” he whisper into my ear. Every breath I cherish. “You’re so fucking cute, you know that?” Is what I find to respond with. I look up to him and see him thinking. The concentration on his face was quite full on. “I don’t think we should go back to the others,” when he turns his head, our eyes immediately lock. “Whyyyyyy?” I cock my leg up onto his abdomen, turning to face him fully. “I just wanna cuddle.” The beautiful Jeff Atkins.

The Bad Batch X Sick Reader
A/N: This is my very first posted fic on here, I hope you all enjoy. Please feel free to provide feedback, it’s much appreciated!
Although you didn’t bolt upright in dramatic fashion upon returning from a deep slumber, you nevertheless awoke with a start, eyes fluttering open and feeling vaguely aware of the dampness of a cold sweat permeating your hairline. Disorientation takes over as you lie rigid in the bed, only being able to process the physicality of how utterly terrible you feel- you didn’t think you could move in such quick succession if you tried- Every joint feels stiff and your muscles are resistant to comply, attempting to encompass and entrap your body deep within the mattress, refusing to give way to your motions.
Swiping at the remnants of sweat from your forehead with the back of your hand, you become uncomfortably conscious of the fact that your face is burning up, despite the rest of your extremities freezing in stark contrast.
This was no good. Your heart rate quickens as panic rises in your throat, gripping tightly as your breath hitches. Your mind begins racing, conjuring up every angle of the current situation in an attempt to make some light of it. You eventually force the lump down, giving into the overwhelming realization.
You were sick. Big time.
Fearing you looked as bad as you felt, you promptly thrust yourself out of bed with great effort and a groan of pain before stumbling into the ‘fresher, examining your entirety and fervently hoping your initial concerns were just an exaggerated oversight.
One glance at your trembling, pale, and achy form confirmed your worst suspicions.
“Kriff,” is all you can manage, further worsening matters by the realization of your curse rolling out only as a mere croak. Gritting your teeth, you roll your puffy, exhausted eyes and shake your head in disappointment. Great. Sick AND losing your voice. This can’t get much worse, you think to yourself bitterly as you level your gaze back at the mirror.
With great effort you manage you pull yourself together enough to make it out to the common area of the ship, bracing yourself to face the others. You remain self-conscious of your movements, attempting to exert your stance, stride, and demeanor with purpose as to not draw unwanted attention to yourself and your condition.
Hunter, Wrecker, Tech, Crosshair- they were no fools. Hunter especially, what with his enhanced senses and innate perceptions, will pick up on your illness lighting fast.
Realizing you’re up and starting your day much later than usual, it’s no surprise the guys are already up and in their respective places- although Hunter is nowhere to be found upon entering the common room.
Tech, lounging in a seat with his nose buried in his datapad, eyebrows furrowed in concentration, looks up to greet you first, his expression turning into that of perplexity.
“Good morning, Y/N. I am surprised you slept in. Stayed up late last night, I presume?”
You clear your throat in an attempt to forcefully exact your normal, chipper level of voice. “Hey, Tech. Yeah, something like that.”
He nods, returning sights to his work, facial expression evident that his curiosity is momentarily satiated. It’s clear that he didn’t pick up on the fact that your voice, despite your best attempts, came out in just above a whisper. For that, you were thankful.
You head over to the cupboard to pour yourself some caf, hoping a warm drink would do you some good.
“You look like hell.”
A terse statement from the jaded appearance of Crosshair standing in the corner, arms folded across his chest and eyes boring into you, caused you to jump and your already trembling fingers to drop the empty cup you had grabbed, clanging to the ground and reverberating with purpose as if some cruelly overly-dramatized joke.
Feeling frustration bubble to the surface, you sigh deeply and level a thinly-veiled unimpressed look in his direction, unable to muster the willpower to put up with his attitude today.
“Thanks.” You sneer. Before you even manage a step over in his direction to where the cup had predictably rolled, Crosshair moved in the blink of an eye to pick it up and appear alongside you, placing the now unusable cup to the side and in one solid motion, reaching up to grab a new one down for you.
You look at Crosshair quizzically. Out of all the other members on this ship with whom you’ve fallen into methodical and sequential step with, you two have still got some steps to learn to your dance, with you having never quite fully figured out the enigmatic sniper and all of his expressive layers.
“Thanks,” you mutter in just above a strained whisper, though pushing more sincerity and less of a sarcastic quip this time. Turning to pour the caf, you’re taken by mild surprise when Crosshair engages with you once again.
“You sick or somethin’?” His eyes narrow questioningly as he searches your face before reaching out tentatively to thumb at your cheek, gently cupping it.
You’re taken aback by the touch, distantly aware of your heart rate quickening it’s pace. You avoid his questioning gaze, instead focusing on the sensation of his cool fingertips meeting the increasing warmth radiating from your skin with ease. Despite the fact that the action further solidifies your current state of being fever-ridden. It’s oddly comforting.
You hesitantly turn away, but not before slightly leaning into his touch.
“I’m fine,” you manage weakly.
Crosshair’s not convinced in the slightest. But before he can voice his trepidation, Wrecker comes bounding into the room, his voice boisterous and projecting. Not exactly the sound volume you want to hear right now but, you can’t help but smile inwardly at his puppy-like energy. He means well.
“Hiya, Y/N!” Wrecker greets you with a less-than-gentle pat on the back, making you almost spill the cup of hot caf you had laced your cold fingers around just moments before.
You weren’t sure what facial expression you were wearing, but Wrecker falters nonetheless. “You okay?” He asks, voice coated with concern.
Kriff. You wish everyone would kindly stop asking you that. You just wanted to enjoy your kriffing cup of caf and TRY to recoup before your briefing in two standard rotations, with which you’d been tasked with compiling numerous works together in preparation for a large-scale mission forthcoming. The fact that you were in this state, so close to the arrival date of the meeting and your work not AT ALL in a state of completion, was seriously stressing.
“Yeah, Wrecker.” You once again smile up at the gentle giant looming over you. “All good.”
As if on cue in an effort for the universe to illuminate your lying streak with full bravado, your body is racked with increasing pain and you tremble, feeling a shiver go up your spine.
Nobody gets a word out before Hunter comes around. He looks as if he’s just awoke, blinking rapidly and rubbing at his temples. You consider him for a moment then, realization hitting you like a ton of bricks.
OH.
THAT’S why he hasn’t been around this morning.
Guilt suddenly pangs at your chest as you revert back to yesterday, recalling how Hunter had to turn in after the last mission due to a headache caused from a sensory overload. He had explained to you how it plagued him from time to time, and reassured you not to worry, but you couldn’t forget how much pain he was in- eyes glazed over, body doubled over, beads of sweat enveloping his face. It made you feel helpless.
Helpless, and embarrassed at your perceived selfishness.
Here you were, out here dropping cups from the cupboard and making general racket, all the while wallowing in your own self-misery today- having not even previously processed how Hunter could’ve been in the other room feeling just as miserable.
Now he stood before you, addressing everyone about something, something you couldn’t even hear over the sound of your own thoughts simultaneously drowning everyone out.
“-Feels like I heard commotion or somethin’ out here, just thought I’d check on y’all.” He grinned in amusement, feeling a spark of playfulness. “Wanted to make sure Y/N wasn’t acting up in here.”
Everyone cracked a grin but you, who all but blurted out your guilty admission, much to your chagrin. It’s your own guilt, coupled with illness, sporadic emotions due to the fact, and lack of coherent thoughts nagging at you all at once.
“Hunter... I’m sorry,” you croaked. All eyes were on you, each differing degrees of quizzical expressions.
“I-I’m the one who dropped the cup and made the racket. I didn’t consider that you could’ve still been feeling unwell. Sorry.” You sheepishly confess, before spilling into a coughing fit.
Kriff. Shouldn’t have said so much in one setting. Way to make your condition obvious.
Hunter, who holds the most mixed expressions you’ve ever seen- amusement, discomfort, confusion, laced with compassion- comes striding over to you.
“Y/N. You’re rambling. That’s not like you,” he chuckles. “I’m fine, don’t worry about me, okay? You look like you could use a lot more help right now.” He reaches a hand to splay out across your forehead to check for a fever that you both already know is becoming, to which you gracefully duck and sidestep him, all while gripping your cup of caf.
Crosshair chuckles at your motion and Hunter just looks to you. He’s diving fully into empathetic, sensible parent mode- you can tell- as he sighs exasperatedly at your innate ability to prove difficult.
“Y/N... ya gotta let us figure out what’s going on with you, so that we can get ya well.”
You look down into the cup, weighing those words and considering what to say next. You’ve never been one to freely and openly allow someone to care for you, nor have you fully possessed the ability to convey your feelings in a refined way- especially when you’re unwell. Your tenacity, though admirable, doesn’t always make it easy for someone else to know how to help you. Likewise, deeming it challenging for you to even know how one can help you. It’s a tedious cycle that plagues you when you immerse yourself too deep.
“I... I think I’m just tired.” you manage weakly. “Besides,” you croak, “I’ve got to get all my works completed before the briefing.”
With that, collective silence falls as you stumble back towards your room, thankful for the closed doors that keep your vulnerabilities and current physical ailments tightly locked away.
You were thankful for the brief quiet time, and managed to clear your head just enough to work for what you estimated to be about a half hour that came and went. With your work sprawled on the floor, you alongside it, the caf mug well empty now and off to the side, there’s a wheezing that now accompanies your breaths and, it worries you. As you lie flat on the floor, fear swells in your chest and you wish you had the courage to call the guys in here to you. You wish you weren’t so conflicted.
As you finish that train of thought, there’s a loud bang on the door.
“Y/N?” It’s Wrecker, the realization coming unsurprisingly to you judging by the obvious choice gesture of greeting at the door.
“Come in,” you strain your voice to project.
In the doorframe you find all four members of The Bad Batch, all weighing mixed levels of concern at your small, sick frame curled up on the floor. They all collectively rush in, though in a way as to not alarm you. In the moment, you’re thankful for their company.
“Hey,” Hunter soothes as he kneels down beside you, running a hand through your hair. “You’re gonna be okay. Let us take care of you, like you take care of us.”
You nod weakly, coming to your senses and surrendering all complaining rights in that moment.
Hunter orders Tech to go and grab the small medkit kept on the ship, though they’re all well aware of the fact that it’s not on par with medical facilities. Being several parsecs away from the nearest, they want to at least get the ball rolling here onboard for now. They decide not to move you until you’re stable.
Wrecker comes behind you and sits down, straddling you back into his lap and letting you use him as a body pillow. He doesn’t mind, he loves your small frame in contrast with his own, much larger one. You love how warm he is in the moment. It’s a mutual feeling between you two of safety and security.
Tech promptly returns with the medkit and although Crosshair is the only one appearing rigid and most hesitant to be hands-on with you, The Bad Batch get to work, communicating amongst themselves with the same efficiency they project amidst all things. They give you some anti-inflammatories to take the edge off, and you vaguely remember a stimulant- an overwhelmingly pleasant aroma of something very herbal-like. You initially thought it to be reminiscent of Bacta, but it wasn’t.. What was that?
Almost instantly, your chest felt clear. Your breathing became even and despite still being in pain, you were no longer wheezing. You attempted to make a mental note to ask later what the miracle worker was, but you weren’t able to give it much more thought as you felt your eyes suddenly became heavy-lidded, succumbing to rest you know your body desperately needed.
You awoke much later, feeling immensely better, and no longer needing the medical facility services that were finally available to you. Four pairs of eyes were studying you and, upon seeing you wake, the expressions attached collectively sighed in relief. You couldn’t help but feel something soft swirl in your chest upon lovingly fixing your gaze on the crew of the Havoc Marauder. They truly were something special. They knew you the best, and were able to have the most profound effect on you, no matter how adamantly complex you could be. They deeply cared for you. It’s moments like these, you realize how intertwined and inseparable you are.
You hope it always stays that way.

Hello! So, I saw your post about requests and here I am. I really want to read smth about reader's workout session with Chris Redfield. Well, the reader isn't an agent, she just wants to stay in a good shape and Chris is just so willing to help her. It can lead to smut I really don't mind. :) P.S. Looking forward to the second chapter of your new Chris story. It's great.
There it is. A nice (hot) workout session with Chris Redfield that ends up in the shower ;-) Apparently, I can’t help myself. I have to write bathroom sex when it comes to Chris. Anyway hope you’ll like it and thank you for ready Under Her Large Umbrella.
WARNING: SMUT ( but it’s near the end so you can skip it if you want)
Working Out BSAA-Style - Chris Redfield x Reader  (NSFW)
You were used to find an empty cold bed in the morning. It had been your routine for the past two years or so. The sacrifice to make when you date BSAA Golden Boy Chris Redfield. What you were not used to, however, was being pulled out of your bed by your feet at six thirty in the morning. “Come on, lazy bum. We said 6:15. You’re late.”           You growled and buried your head under your pillow. “You said 6:15, Chris. Not me.” “I thought you wanted to workout with me today.” You could imagine his mocking smile through the tone of his voice. “Yeah, like a regular person. At a decent hour. And I imagined something like yoga or Pilate, not Ninja Warrior or whatever military training you prepared for me.” Chris chuckled and removed the blanket covering your body, making you instantly curl up because of the sudden cold. “Come on, baby. Get your sweet butt in gear and join me outside in ten.” He slapped your rear and you jumped by reflex. “Ten?” You harrumphed as your sleepy face finally emerged from under the pillow. “Yep, otherwise I’d be long gone and you’ll have to catch up on me.”
You watched him leave the bedroom, leaving you here to grumble on your own. What did you have to ask him for a workout session, again? Oh yeah, the sudden whim to stay in shape and have your summer body ready for your July bikini. But that’s precisely what it was; a whim, something far from being entirely serious, something you wanted to do but never ended up doing without an ounce of regret, like adopting a kitten or something like that. But there’s no place for whim when you share your life with Chris Redfield.
You managed to be ready in ten … well in twenty, actually. But it did not matter since Chris was still waiting for you nevertheless, stretching on the guardrail bordering the stadium nearby the BSAA barracks. “You’re late soldier.” His tone was very solemn and serious and probably resembling the one he had when he was speaking to his unit. “I’m no soldier, Captain.” You insisted on his title on purpose. “I know that. If you had been, I would have make you do a hundred push-ups for being late to my training session. So, I’ll guess you’ll just do fifty.” Your mouth opened wide. He wasn’t serious, right? You had never really done push-ups and he wanted you to do fifty of them. “Kidding.” He grinned and caught your chin to kiss your lips softly. “Should have seen your face.”          “Haha, very funny.” You retorted with sarcasm. “So what’s the program, Captain Redfield?”   “Let’s say few minutes of warm-up, ten laps on the track, some stretching exercise, core building and a nice shower together to finish.” Alright, he wanted you to die a slow death but at least the reward was worth it. “Or, we can skip all this and directly go to the shower. I heard that sex also helps your body burn some calories and that it’s a good cardio.” You smiled, knowing perfectly Chris would not accept the offer but you just loved teasing him. “Oh, trust me, sweet heart. We’ll get there. But first, let’s warm up. ” Of course he meant literal warm-up and not sexual warm-up. Too bad. That one you loved a lot, especially when it involved Chris’ face in between your legs. Guess you would have to spread your legs for nothing for now.
Chris clapped his hands, telling you the workout session had officially begun. As a good student, you followed and repeated all his moves, mimicking the ways he was rotating his hips then his arms, stretching his upper body, and flexing his legs before finally finishing with a series of squats. You thought you didn’t do so badly because Chris barely gave you some advice. “Not bad for a beginner.” He admitted,   “Well, you should know better than anyone how good I am when it comes to warm-ups.” You said cheekily. “Oh, so that’s why your behind was so … prominent while doing squats.” You expected that naughty remark. Actually, you must admit you had thrown Chris the line on purpose. You loved him when he was all BSAA Captain serious, but you loved him also when he was responding to your occasional teasing. And right now you could have a mix of both, so why not taking the chance.       “Alright, let’s run together now.”
You were not really fond of running, especially running on tracks, finding it too boring. You preferred walking or trekking in the woods. You had done that with Chris quite a few times during his rare furloughs.  But you had asked for a workout session with your BSAA Captain and so you followed the lead without complaining.   You both started jogging along slowly, Chris giving you some good tips to run without tiring yourself out too much. “Always run in the innermost lane of the track, it shortens the distance a bit. And focus on your breathing. Inhale and exhale using both your mouth and your nose.” You listened carefully and obeyed, happy to spend this time with him and to see Chris in a new light. He was a very good teacher and an awesome leader, giving advice without sounding bossy. No wonder he was so well esteemed and appreciated by his team.
When you started to quicken your pace, you felt your breathing and your heart accelerating a lot and soon you realised you were slowing Chris down. How could he not be tired? Even a tiny bit? “You know you can leave me behind. I’ll manage.” You did not want to ruin his training after all. “No. No way. No one stays behind, soldier. Come on.” He grabbed your arm to drag you and help you keep running. “I have a stich.” “Then imagine a horde of hungry BOWs chasing you. That always helps.” Rely on your survival instinct? Well, that’s some advice. But you had to admit that, in a certain way, your survival was at stake right now since you could feel your heart pounding in your chest like crazy. Could hearts explode? You hoped not.
You didn’t know how you managed to finish those ten laps but you did, though your lungs would forever remember them.  Exhausted, panting, face completely reddened, you let yourself fall on the grass. “Kill me now.” Chris crouched down and kissed your lips softly. “I said kill me, not kiss me. But I’ll take it.” He chuckled, stood up again and extended his hand to help you get up. “Come on, stretch up a bit. You’ll feel better.” You grabbed his hand and he pulled you up with an incredible ease despite you being a total dead weight right now.
“Come on do as I do, otherwise you’ll be aching.” Again, you mimicked his moves, stretching your upper and lower body. And it felt actually really good and soothing. “Okay, now on the ground. Core exercises.”           “You can’t be serious.” You weren’t sure you would be able to keep up.     “Then we will be good to go. I promise.” He winked and knelt on the ground. Then he rested his forearms on the grass and extended his legs so that his body formed a straight line. You knew that exercise. You used to do it in high school. But it’s been a while since high school. Nevertheless, you put your body in the same position and glimpsed at Chris. “How long?” “Until I tell you it’s over. Now stop hiking up your butt like that.” You felt Chris gently kick your behind to make you drop your hips a bit. “You usually never complain.” You mumbled, trying to keep the joke to yourself.             “What did you say?” He asked, though you were certain he had heard you. “Nothing”
You ended your intensive training with some butterfly sit-ups, something called ‘dead bug’ (a fitting name for you right now) and a series of old-fashioned push-ups. ‘Alright, enough for today!” Chris declared as he quickly stood up.     “Did I pass the BSAA admission exam?” You asked, getting back on your feet, all sweaty but happy that the workout was finally over. “You did, rookie.” He nodded and you smiled proudly. “Well, that was easy.”           “ However, there’s one last thing you must do to be fully admitted. Something to ace the test, let’s say.” Chris smirked and you bit your lips, understanding exactly what he meant. So, Chris wanted to play today. Fair enough. Let’s play, Captain. “And what is that, Captain Redfield?”         “Join me in the shower in my personal quarters and I’ll show you.” He dragged you against his strong body, his hands pressed against your lower back. “Is that very professional, Captain?” “It’s part of the training program, rookie. I believe you can’t say no, especially after wiggling that gorgeous butt for an entire hour right in front of your Captain.” He groped your ass and lay a warm kiss in your neck. “Now come with me.”         “Roger that” you purred and he chuckled, amused yet already terribly aroused judging by the way his chocolate brown had suddenly darkened.
You and Chris almost ran back to your place. And needless to say that, as soon as the door slammed shut behind you, you ended up in his muscular arms again so that he could carry you quickly to the bathroom, making you lose your sports shoes on the way. “My clothes!” You laughed when Chris entered the shower with you, still dressed. But he couldn’t care less and immediately turned up the tap.
The cold water instantly squirted on you both, making you yelp. But you didn’t mind. The cold water was just like Chris’ sudden carelessness, refreshing and welcoming.   “What’s happening to you?” You wondered, beaming at him. “Don’t you think I’ve noticed all your little allusions back there?” He caught your lips, his hands roaming all over your body and undressing you hastily. “Those little allusions? That turned you on?”     “Oh sweetie, anything you do is turning me on when you wear those skin-tight yoga pants. But right now, I want them off.” And he pulled them down with one swift move, along with your panties, the second he finished that sentence, kneeling down in the shower as he did to hoist one of your leg on his broad shoulder.       Then he kissed your thighs on and on until he reached your pussy where he placed another kiss to keep you waiting, while his fingers were too busy spreading your warm lips and playing with your clit. You shivered, impatient and looking at Chris with pleading eyes through the water running over both your bodies. Fortunately for you, he was not in the mood for much teasing today and he soon lapped your slit up to your clit where he decided to linger a bit to suck it greedily. A loud moan escaped your mouth, which encouraged Chris to be even more ardent than he already was. He swirled his tongue on your bud, pulling it occasionally in between his lips and let a finger enter your core to fuck you. You buried your hand in his wet hair to prevent yourself from slipping in the shower because of the exquisite wave of pleasure drowning your body right now. “Chris. Chris, please get up.” You asked, not willing to reach your orgasm just yet.
Chris complied after one last loud kiss on your clit. As he stood right in front of you again, largely towering you because of how tall and massive he was in comparison to you, you realised he was still wearing his tank top and his shorts. So you removed them slowly, leaving a trail of kisses on his strong abs and chest as you did, enjoying the sensation of his rock hard muscles against your lips.           When his shorts and his boxers hit the shower floor, you took his erected length in your hand and knelt in your turn. You started pumping his cock, staring at Chris right in the eye, before finally kissing his tip and sucking it like a lollipop. He hissed and tensed at the sensation. “Don’t tease me too much, baby. I’m that close to explode already.” You didn’t answer but you guessed taking his length in your mouth would be the perfect way to show him you’d do as he said. So, you engulfed his cock deep in your mouth and started bobbing your head. A growl escaped his throat and you felt him instantly relax as his head tilted back against the shower wall. Hands massaging his balls, you alternated between sucking and licking until Chris grabbed your ponytail and pushed himself deep in you, making you gag around him. “That’s it, take my cock, baby.” You kept going, leaving a lot of saliva around his thick length and then you felt Chris hoisting you up by your arms to press his lips passionately against yours.
“How do you want it?” He whispered, still close to your mouth. “From behind.” You wanted it rough. Maybe not a wise idea after the workout you had just had but if you are going to be aching for days, might as well be for a good reason. “I thought so.” Chris turned you around and spanked you as he pushed you against the wall. You placed your hands on the tiles and bent over so that he would grab you by the hips. “You know how to please your Captain, don’t you?” He roared as he spread your legs and went to tap his cock against your entrance.
Then he sank into you with ease, making you moan his name because of how surprisingly deep he already was. Hands on your waist he started pounding you hard and fast. Your head almost hit the wall under the strength of his thrust and the weight of his muscular body. Him inside of you was just the most divine sensation in the world. He filled you so perfectly. “Oh my god, Chris”         He smirked, circled your waist with one arm to keep in place and put his hand on your head to press your face against the tiles, establishing his dominance on you and using this position to go balls deep inside of you. “You like that, baby?”  You cried out. “I didn’t hear you”     “Yeeess.” You whimpered, your eyes closed. He slapped you again and you screamed, clenching your walls around him.       He was relentless, so strong, so fast, so deep you could hear his balls slap against your clit and his hips smacking your behind. Those sounds plus the sound of the running water on both your bodies. Goodness, this was arousing. “Chris, I’m gonna cum.” You cried out as you felt your orgasm building up in you again. “Good. Cum with me.” He pushed you flat against the wall, hand still holding your hair, and hardened his pace, aroused by your beautiful body completely at his mercy.
It only took a few seconds for him to cum deep inside of you with a loud growl, spilling his load in your clenching pussy as you were reaching your peak as well, screaming his name like never before. A few last rough deep thrust and Chris pulled out you, leaving incredibly satisfied yet shivering and even more exhausted than before.           He smiled, proud of himself, as he gazed his white seed oozing out of your pussy. “Yep, you passed the test, baby.” He joked and he lay a soft kiss on your shoulder while you chuckled. “Perfect.”             “Next test next week.”
To spend another amazing moment like this one with your BSAA Golden Boy, you could only agree.

Trainees were separated into groups for various training sessions throughout the day, and a group was never the same. Everyone was rotated around. Your group for the day happened to do incredibly well in the training exercises. “Best so far,” you were told. They decided to reward the group by allowing all of you to have a paintball fight, writing it off as combat practice. Everyone darted to various corners of Hogan’s Alley. You hid behind a dumpster and readied yourself for the battle to begin. A thud from the inside caused your brows to furrow. Since the Alley was a mock town, you knew that there wasn’t any trash inside that would attract any critters. Nevertheless, you decided to check it out. You cracked open the lid, only for something to latch around your arm. “What the fuck, Bright?” He shushed you.
“Come on, this is the best hiding spot here! Anyone comes around, and you can easily take them out without being spotted. Just... just hurry up and hop in before you blow our cover.” You stared at him, blinking slowly. Was he serious? Malcolm’s eyes widened, causing him to look slightly frantic as he motioned you inside. Alright, he was completely serious. You clamored into the dumpster and hoped that no one heard the lid slam shut. Malcolm clicked on his flashlight. He raised a brow and grave you a sly grin. He started to speak, but you interrupted him.
“If you’re about to make this sexual, I swear to God I will shoot you in the crotch right now.” Malcolm grimaced, looking highly offended.
“What? No! I was about to ask if you had heard about how Johnson from the second group pissed his pants in the hostage simulation today,” he rapidly explained. Then he froze for a moment, giving you a doubtful look. “You wouldn’t shoot me this close range. You’re not that cruel.” You held up your gun.
“Wanna bet?” Malcom narrowed his eyes at you. He was challenging your capabilities. What was once a game of hide-and-go-seek turned into a game of cat-and-mouse. Either way, you weren’t losing. You leaned back and pulled the trigger. The paintball hit its target with a loud twap! Malcolm shouted a string of profanities as he curled into fetal position. You clasped a hand over your mouth to keep from laughing. “Oh my God, I’m so sorry.”
“Bitch...” he groaned.
“You practically told me to!”
Fond memories of your old life were what got you through your secret life. Being assigned to go undercover for months on end was no easy feat. There were plenty of times you wanted to call it quits, but you couldn’t. So, you’d think of moments that made you happy. You were beyond relieved when you were able to return home. It was as if you could finally breathe again. You wanted nothing more than to sleep for at least two weeks straight, but, of course, you weren’t allowed such luxuries.
You had awakened too early for your liking but decided to spend the time catching up on all the shows you missed while undercover. You had just sat down with a cup of coffee when someone started banging on your door. You sighed, taking a long sip of your coffee and hoping that they would go away. Luck wasn’t on your side, as the person continued to try to punch your door down. You groaned and shuffled over towards the door. It revealed a woman with curly hair. She gave you a small grin and held up a badge. You squinted at it in an attempt to determine its authenticity. “Hi, I’m Dani Powell with the NYPD. Are you Ms. (Y/L/N)?” You eyed her for a moment before finally deciding that she was telling the truth about her identity. You slowly nodded, slightly confused as to why she was there. “Mind if I talk to you for a few minutes?” she asked, putting her badge away.
Yeah... what’s... I’m sorry what’s going on?”
“Your neighbor was murdered last night.”
Your body tensed. Was she serious? Could a murder have seriously taken place right under your nose? You turned on your heel and hurried further into your apartment. Dani looked confused, hesitantly stepping inside. You fumbled through a drawer before returning with a badge of your own. “I’m with the FBI. Could I see the crime scene please?” Dani raised a brow at you.
“Let’s go talk to my superior first.” You nodded and slipped on a pair of shoes. Following Dani down the hall, she approached a man leaning against the wall with his arms crossed. “Where’s Gil?” The man furrowed his brows at the sight of you. Okay, so maybe you could have at least brushed your hair before you walked out. You probably looked like a hot mess.
“Inside. Who’s your friend?”
“Special Agent (Y/F/N). FBI. I live down the hall,” you answered. The man seemed surprised, causing Dani to roll her eyes.
“Oh shit, really? I’m TJ.” He started to say something else, but Dani interrupted him.
“She wanted to see the scene, but I was gonna let her talk to Gil first.” You pursed your lips. Surely, it wasn’t the same person you were thinking of. There was a slight commotion from inside the crime scene before two men emerged into the hall. One was waving his hands widely, while the other looked done with his shit.
“Okay, so we’re looking for-” Your jaw dropped. Malcolm? Here, of all places? The world is quite a small place. “Cookie?” TJ and Dani’s faces wrinkled.
“Stinky!” Malcolm laughed at the familiar nickname as you threw your arms around him in an embrace. Gil smiled at the two of you.
“What am I, chopped liver?” You scoffed before giving him a hug too. TJ and Dani shared a look of confusion, which wasn’t lost under Malcolm’s gaze.
“Team, this is Cookie. Cookie, this is the team.”
“I’m sorry-- but Cookie?” TJ asked, almost astonished at hearing Malcolm call someone by their pet name. The profiler nodded. A smirk crossed his lips.
“We’ve been friends since Quantico. During training, (Y/N) snuck out of her room to steal some treats. Everyone’s called her that since.” You rolled your eyes at the mention of your nickname.
“And you’re... Stinky?” Dani asked with a laugh. You beamed at the opportunity to share your favorite memory from training.
“At some point during your time at the academy, a handful of trainees are dropped off at random points in the Prince William Forrest Park to test your survival skills. We somehow managed to bump into each other while wandering around and decided to team up. Two heads are better than one, right? So, we were trying to figure out a shelter situation when Stinky discovered a foxhole type thing. I warned him not to go in, but-” Malcolm interrupted you.
“I’m pretty sure you said, ‘We can’t go in there because your head’s too big. You’d get stuck and die before we even get a chance to go on a real mission.’”
“Shut up, Stinky, I’m telling a story. Anyways, the bastard decided to go in. Lo and behold! There was a family of skunks living inside, and he just barged right on in. The dude stunk. Bad. No one would go near him for about a week. So, the name Stinky was born.”
After telling the group a few more stories about Malcolm and learning a bit more about the case, you went back to your apartment to change into some actual clothes. They still required you to go down to the station and make a statement. Malcolm offered you a ride, which you gladly accepted. You hadn’t seen him since before he got fired.
As the two of you got in his car, you couldn’t help but notice how awful he looked. His hands were shaking, and he had heavy bags under his eyes. “You’re staring,” Malcolm joked, but, this time, the smile didn’t quite meet his eyes. You shook your head.
“Yeah, it’s cause you look like shit, Malcolm.” He turned his attention back to starting the car. He knew that you were being serious when you used his actual name. You watched his inner turmoil, no doubt debating whether he could confide in you. Turning your gaze away, you didn’t want him to feel like a bug under a microscope. “How long has it been this bad?”
“It’s been bad for a while now, but it’s gotten worse over the past few weeks.” His voice was small, and it made your heart ache. Shaking your head, you got out of the car. Malcolm’s brows furrowed. You poked your head back inside.
“Well? Are you just gonna sit there like a fly on the wall, or are you going to tag along with me?” Without a moment’s hesitation, Malcolm switched the car off and appeared by your side. You linked your arm with his, tugging him along. “Don’t ask questions, just follow my lead.”
You led him to a rather posh boutique not too far from your apartment building. Malcolm seemed a bit concerned as to what you had in store for him, and you couldn’t help but laugh. The older woman working there seemed a bit disapproving as the two of you walked in, giggling over some old inside joke. “Okay, seriously, why are we here?” Malcolm finally asked. You grabbed his wrist and looked at his watch.
“You have five minutes to put the most ridiculous outfit together. Loser has to buy lunch. Go!”
You scurried away, hoping that he would let loose and have some fun. Luckily for you, Malcolm wasn’t the one to back away form a challenge. Five minutes passed faster than you would have liked, but you thought you did pretty good. You were wearing large sunglasses, a tiara, and a jacket almost entirely made of rhinestones. You turned around and nearly fell to the ground with laughter. You hadn’t expected Malcolm to take the challenge that seriously. He was wearing sunglasses similar to your own, a feather boa, a shiny necklace, and he was even holding a single earring to one of his earlobes. What got you the most was his ridiculous hat, something you would only expect to see at the Kentucky Derby. His smile widened at your reaction. “Looks like you’ll be the one buying lunch.”
“I lost?”
“Obviously,” Malcolm scoffed.
“Oh, but did I really?” You quickly pulled out your phone, snapping a couple pictures. “I can’t wait to show these to Gil. He’s gonna die.” Malcolm’s jaw dropped. He put his earring down and held a hand out to you.
“Gimme.”
“What? Hell no, Stinky. You’re gonna have to pry this thing out of my cold, dead hands.” His eyes narrowed, and you immediately regretted your statement. Malcolm lunged at you, causing you to shriek and dash away. He cornered you near some clothing racks. His arms wrapped around you as he attempted to wrangle your phone from your hands. The two of you were too busy laughing and fighting each other to realize that you were inching closer and closer to the racks. As you struggled to get out of his grasp, Malcolm had the bright idea to suddenly let go, sending you tumbling forward. You landed on a clothing rack, taking the whole thing down with you. Malcolm roared with laughter and had to lean on his knees for support. “Fuck you!” you called out. He held out a hand, helping you to your feet. “You’re a jackass.”
“Oh, come on, you know you love m-” He was interrupted by the older woman clearing her throat. Her arms were crossed, and she was tapping one foot.
“I think it’s best if you two leave. Now.” You both apologized profusely and even offered to help clean up, but she shooed you out of the store, after taking back their clothes of course. You gave Malcolm a hard time, blaming him for getting you both banned from the store. After the two of you fell into a steady silence, walking side by side, you prompted him with a question.
“What were you saying earlier? I know I love what?” Malcolm laughed, almost nervously.
“I was going to say that you know you love me.” You pursed your lips and hummed.
“Maybe that’s why I’ve put up with you all these years, Stinky.”
“You’re not a ray of sunshine either, Cookie.”
“At least I don’t smell like skunk ass.”
“That was five years ago!”

Encounters - Part One

“Okay, my sons.  It is time,”
Despite his hushed tone, Splinter’s voice swelled with importance as he turned to face his charges. The maroon hoodie he had scrounged up fanned around him almost comically as he moved, speaking to the fact that it was clearly designed with someone much taller than he in mind. Even so, there was still an air of confidence and gravitas to his manner – this was not the first time that he had stood before an audience, nor, if he had anything to say about it, would it be his last. “As you know, this is an important mission. I am aware that you have been through this before, but it still remains pertinent that you remember the rules. Recite them for me, please.”
Three of the four hooded figures before him immediately straightened to attention, their voices also hushed but still quivering with excitement.
           “Pay attention!”
           “Stay close!”
           “No talking!”
           …
The last response, rather than being delivered with confidence, was replaced with silence punctuated by the steady drip drip drip of a leaky pipe above them and the droning rumble of cars in the distance. Tiny rivulets of water streamed from a crack in the metal tube directly over their heads, running together and condensing into a single droplet that swelled and drooped under its own weight before silently dropping into a puddle of its brethren at their feet.
The pause dragged on for a few more seconds, and Splinter couldn’t help but roll his eyes upwards in a silent plea for patience as he sighed. “Michelangelo?”
“Oh! The last and smallest figure in line immediately stood up straight, his focus snapping away from the growing puddle and turning towards his father. “Stick to the shadows!” The young turtle scrunched up his snout and leapt forward, landing on one foot and raising his arms into the air as an attempt at an action pose. “Like ninjas – HA!”
The gesture might have been threatening, were it not coming from an eight year old in an orange hoodie. However, it definitely sufficed to distract those around him. The three other turtles giggled, their concentration broken as they immediately began hopping around and striking their own grand poses. “Yeah – ninjas! Like Lou Jitsu!”
Splinter blinked slowly, a small smile teasing at his lips despite himself. “Right… like ninjas. If ninjas were loud and unfocused.”
That caught their attention. All four turtles immediately fumbled to a stop and forced serious expressions onto their round faces. “Sorry, Dad.”
“Hm.” The rat hummed, his gaze moving over the boys one last time before nodding. “Alright, let us go.”
***
Even with his years of training, Splinter still couldn’t help but be impressed by the relative ease with which he was able to lift manhole covers. Perhaps there were a few advantages to this new form - however, now was not the time for him to crow over his abilities.
Tonight was a gathering night.
Still holding the cover a few inches above him, Splinter peered around the alleyway. His ears rotated atop his head, listening for any sign of danger before he finally pushed himself up and out of the pipe. Once he was on solid ground, the rat sniffed the air and nodded slowly. This would be a good spot for the night.
Green dumpsters lined the gap between Eastman’s Donuts and Laird Apartments, each giving off a variety of odors that ranged in levels of pleasantness.  The alleyway he’d chosen tonight was one they frequented due to its abundance of cover and wide variety of resources. He always made sure to schedule their gathering nights shortly after garbage day, so that any food placed in the bins would still be relatively fresh and untouched by whatever else was dumped in with it. Years of gatherings told him that the dumpsters on the opposite side of either building tended to be less fruitful, but both alleyways held Salvation Army drop boxes that sometimes held clothing or other small items that could be repurposed for their needs.
“You may come out, boys. Silently.”
To their credit, his sons were decent at following commands when needed. One at a time, the four boys peeped their heads out of the drain and then scrambled over the edge.
Raphael led the way, his shell bumping against either side of the pipe as he pulled himself through. Even at eight years old, his biggest son stood slightly taller than his father and was showing signs of growing every day. Splinter was already dreading the day that they would have to change gathering routes in order to find manholes covers more accommodating of his size – that, or he would have to risk leaving his tenderhearted son alone at the lair during missions. The latter idea already hurt to think of.
Donatello and Leonardo were next, somehow managing to hold a silent shoving match as they ascended the ladder and attempted to pull themselves out of the ground. His purple son eventually emerged victorious, scrambling to his feet a few seconds ahead of his brother and immediately ducking behind Raph to smile smugly. Leo stuck his tongue out in protest and opened his mouth as if to say something, only to catch a warning glance from his father and snap it shut once more.
Michelangelo was the last one out of the sewer, clambering up the ladder with ease and bouncing excitedly next to his brothers as Splinter pushed the grate back into place. When he turned back around, the rat nodded in approval at the way the other boys had closed rank around their brother, making an unspoken shield. Despite the fact that the turtles were all the same age – or at least, had mutated on the same day – Mikey remained the smallest of the turtles and therefore held the honorary title of baby brother. While he hoped the boy wouldn’t one day grow to be resentful of the fact, Splinter was grateful to have three extra sets of eyes trained on the actions of his most distractible son.
Speaking of eyes – Splinter turned towards the mouth of the alley and took several steps forward. The four boys stumbled after him, small hands brushing his tail and the edge of his hoodie as a guide. His vision nowadays was not what it used to be – a trait he could only assume was a result of his transformation – so he had come to rely heavily on scent and color when moving about.  Nevertheless, his ability to navigate in the dark remained the strongest of the small band of creatures he now called family.
Once he was completely satisfied that they would not be seen, Splinter reached into the pocket of his jacket and withdrew a small bundle of meshy fabric. After a moment of unwinding, he distributed a small reusable bag to each of his sons and jerked his head at the bins. “Red, I will need you to hold a bag for me while I look in the larger bins.” Raphael swelled with pride, and Splinter then turned to his three smaller sons. “You three, go ahead and start gathering. Remember to not eat anything you find until I have had a chance to look it over.”
The boys all nodded obediently as they set about their tasks.
***
“Check this out!” Leo whispered excitedly, drawing his brothers’ attention from their searching. Their scavenging through the cardboard boxes at the edge of the alley hadn’t been particularly fruitful so far – only a few unopened fortune cookies from someone’s takeout and a half-crushed box of crackers. Mikey could feel his stomach grumbling in protest as he rocked backwards on his knees and squinted in the direction of Leo’s voice.
“What’s’it? Something good?”            “Yeah – a remote! See?” The blue-clad turtle shuffled closer on his knees and held out a small rectangular object in his hand. “And it still has batteries in it – I think I can use the recharger we found last time to juice them back up!”
“Oh, cool!” Donnie leaned forward until his head almost bumped into Mikey’s, causing the box turtle to scooch back to allow him a better vantage. “I needed some batteries for my flashlight!”
He reached for the remote expectantly, only for Leo to hurriedly stuff the item into his tote bag and shuffle away. “No way – finder’s keeper’s!”
The soft shelled turtle scowled and reached out again. “Dad said finder’s keeper’s is only for toys and stuff – we have to share tools!”
“Well, then this is my toy.”
“A remote isn’t a – “
“Guyssss I’m hungryyyy. Let’s just go back to looking!”
“Boys!”
The three turtles’ mouths snapped shut, eyes flickering towards the area where Splinter and Raph were and then back towards each other. They waited for a moment, half-expecting to be berated for being too loud, and then heaved identical sighs when no lecturing came.
“Really guys, I’m hungry,” Mikey whispered as he dramatically dropped his head onto Leo’s shoulder. “My tumbus wants food.”
The red-eared slider patted his youngest brother’s head sympathetically, and then gently pushed him off. “Me too. Let’s keep looking. Maybe we can find something good, like… like pizza!”
Mikey could feel liquid immediately rushing to his mouth at the thought of pizza. “Mmm, yeah! A whole entire pizza!”
“As if someone would throw out a whole pizza,” Donnie scoffed as he turned back towards his pile and started searching again. “It’s too expensive.”
Leo rolled his eyes. “Oh yeah? And what do you know about money?”
“More than you.”
“Nuh-uh!”
“Yuh-huh.”
“Nuh-uh!”
“Yuh-huh.”
And with that they were off again, attention set on each other as they continued to whisper-argue. Mikey sighed. Sometimes he swore those two were twins, what with how much they bickered with each other. Dad had said it was impossible due to their difference in species, but that didn’t stop Mikey from imagining his middle two brothers holding a shoving match even from within whatever egg they had hatched from.            Mmm… Eggs.            The small turtle shook his head as his stomach growled once more. Nope, can’t be thinking about food right now. Gotta keep searching. Gotta not think about yummy scrambled eggs or hot, tasty pizza with cheese that stretched off the crust whenever he bit into it. Can’t think about the intoxicating aroma of tomatoes and spices and mushrooms that was so good  she could almost taste it -
Wait.
Mikey sniffed the air.
That smell wasn’t just in his imagination – he was actually smelling pizza!
Scrambling to his feet, Mikey closed his eyes in concentration and focused on the scent. He slowly turned on his heels, inhaling deeply and trying to zero in on the source of the wonderful aroma until he faced the direction it seemed to be coming from. When he finally opened his eyes, the turtle felt his heart drop.
The mouth of the alley loomed before him like a sideways set of open jaws, warning him not to step out onto the sidewalk lest they chomp down and never let him go. Dad had warned them never to venture past the alley’s boundaries, where they were cradled in shadows and safe from any wandering eyes that happened to turn in their direction. And yet the smell of pizza and other good things drifted from just around the corner like a siren’s song, calling him out into the open.
Surely it couldn’t hurt to just lean out and grab the food, then duck back to his family? Mikey could already imagine the proud look on his father’s face as he returned with a whole box of hot food – a rare delicacy in their family. Certainly he would forgive his son for going just a tinnyyyyy bit further than he was supposed to if it meant being able to feed everyone for the night, right?
Glancing back at his family to ensure that their attentions were elsewhere, Mikey stepped closer to the edge of the shadows and listened. He could hear young humans’ voices chattering and laughing in the distance, and the ground vibrated slightly as an occasional car rumbled down the next street over. Taking a deep breath, Mikey poked his head out of the alley and allowed the tip of his nose to be lit up by the towering street lights. The boy hesitated, half expecting to hear Donnie or one of his other family members hissing for him to come back, and then looked to his left.
A row of hedges lined the front of the apartment building they were next to, and served as one of the few natural sources of green on the heavily brown and red bricked street. Mikey could almost imagine the scent trails winding through the leaves of the bushes and down the alley on the opposite side of the building. Maybe he could just sneak through those bushes and around the corner without even stepping onto the sidewalk- so technically he would still be staying in the shadows. Like a ninja.
Before he had a chance to change his mind, Mikey darted around the corner and cleared the small gap between the edge of the building and the first of the bushes in a single leap. The leaves closed around him like a protective cocoon as he ducked into the foliage, shielding him from the street lamps’ lights and serving as the perfect tunnel to crawl through on hands and knees towards the smell. He hesitated for a moment when he reached a slab of concrete that created a gap in the foliage – the front porch that served as the building’s entrance. This opening as a bit more nerve-wracking than the initial dive into the bushes had been, because there he had at least had the option of turning back.
Mikey glanced over his shoulder and back through the bushes, listening. Splinter had still made no sign of noticing that his youngest was missing. He guessed it was now or never.
The young turtle scrambled forward, fighting the urge to yelp as the front porch light fully illuminated his body, and then threw himself the remaining few feet back into the cover of the bushes. His arms trembled with nerves as he collapsed onto his still aching stomach, and he lay motionless for a moment until he could catch his breath again. Ok, ok. Still safe. His knee stung a bit from where he’d apparently scraped it on the concrete, but other than that he was in one piece.
Better yet, the smell of pizza was almost overwhelming at this point.
Swallowing the drool that threatened to escape his mouth, Mikey pulled himself back onto his hands and knees and closed the distance between himself and where the edge of the bushes met the mouth of the next alleyway. He heaved a small sigh of relief as he could finally emerge from the bushes and dive into the dark alley – safety.
The small turtle’s legs shook like jelly beneath him as he plastered himself against a shadow drenched wall and tried to calm his frantically beating heart. It was odd to think that his family was just on the other side of this building, maybe three or four dozen yards away, and yet it felt as if he had just crawled a mile and was now utterly alone.  Mikey shivered at the thought. Okay, so maybe this hadn’t been as great of an idea as he had initially thought. But it was all going to be over in just a second – all he needed to do was grab the pizza and then crawl back through the bushes. Problem solved!
Lifting his nose again, Mikey crept towards one of the closest bins – a large green dumpster with the lid propped up against the wall of the apartment. The smell of hot pizza was nearly overwhelming, and Mikey felt another shiver run through his body as he imagined biting into the cheesy goodness. Who in the world would throw away such an amazing thing?
But… how to get to it?
Raph and Master Splinter usually had to work together to get the rat high enough that he could lean over the edge of the bin and toss things out. And while Mikey was a good climber, he already knew he wouldn’t be able to scramble up the vertical metal wall without help.
Glancing around, Mikey’s eyes zeroed in on several cardboard boxes like the ones he and his brothers had been looking through in the other alley. Maybe if he stacked those together… yes, perfect!
With a smile of determination, the small turtle set to work creating a staircase along the side of the massive trashcan and then scrambled up to the top. It wasn’t the perfect height, but if he stood on his tiptoes from here he could peer over the edge of the bin.
“Whoa,” he whispered as he pulled himself up to the lip, “This thing is enormous!”
Sure enough, the trash can was about six feet long – nearly triple his height – and almost as tall. A few trash bags lined the bottom of the bin, the plastic on some drawn so tight that they threatened to burst and spill their contents into the rest of the garbage. Several brown glass bottles littered the top of the bags, clearly thrown in by a drunken passerby rather than bagged up safely. But in the center of it all, perched atop a particularly large bag of trash, was the pizza box.
Mikey couldn’t help but let out an excited giggle. Based on the smell and where it sat, someone had to have just thrown the box in a few minutes ago – how in the world had he gotten so lucky? Now he just had to reach it.
Using his arms, the turtle pulled himself up on to the edge of the trash can and balanced on his plastron as he leaned forward to reach. His right arm stretched out into the air above the bin, grasping for his prize while his legs kicking legs served as a counterbalance.
“Almost…. Come on…” Pursing his lips, Mikey waved his stubby arm in the direction of the box. Nope. Not working. He rocked sideways to switch arms and then extended the left one in a second attempt. His fingers brushed the tip of the cardboard, and Mikey felt a grin stretch across his face.  “Almost… almost…”
Then, as if suddenly taunting him, the box slipped and slid out of his reach. Mikey yelped in frustration and lunged forward, fingers outstretched –
-only to find himself falling head over heels.
The child squawked in surprise as he tumbled forward, arms pinwheeling as he attempted to grab the edge of the can and keep himself from falling into the veritable abyss, but gravity was not on his side. The turtle fell heavily, arms barely coming up to shield his face as he dropped like a stone and faceplanted into several swollen black trash bags.
Immediately he went into panic mode, his arms flailing for purchase on the shifting floor. Mikey struggled to push himself up onto his elbows and looked around his new surroundings in fear. “Oh no, oh no, oh no, oh no,”
His heart pounded against his ribs as the turtle rolled onto his back and attempted to clamber to his feet, only to succeed in slipping and sliding on the slick plastic until something sharp bit into the bottom of his foot.
All goals of remaining quiet were forgotten as Mikey yelped and leapt backwards from the broken glass, his shell hitting the back of the bin and causing a loud, warping echo to rattle through the metal. Then, as if things couldn’t get any worse, the lid wobbled on its hinges and slammed down, plunging the turtle into perfect darkness.

       ◇─◇──◇────◇────◇────◇────◇────◇─────◇──◇─◇
For someone in a quite literal life-or-death situation, you were taking the news of your possible demise rather well. Perhaps that doesn't say much for someone in your line of work. Space exploration was a risky business, and coming home was not always guaranteed. Most, if not all who worked for the Federal Alliance of Astronomic Exploration knew that possibility before they signed on the dotted line.
You didn't expect it would be on your first solo mission, though.
In hindsight, your day seemed a little bit too perfect leading up to this mess, and maybe your cynical subconscious was expecting this pivotal point where everything goes south. Regardless, you weren't one to sit by while cursing your misfortune. And overall, it could be even worse. At least the life support was still functioning.
Oh, how you wished there was wood somewhere on the ship.
Standard protocol demands that regardless of the severity of the crisis, the ship's captain - in your case, yourself - was to immediately activate the emergency beacon and contact mission control. Step one was already a fail. According to the diagnostic scans, communications, navigation, and the engines were severely damaged and would take hours or even days for the self-repair bots to make any sort of significant progress. So, channeling in your former academy student self, you skipped right on to Plan B.
"Greetings, Lieutenant."
Or rather, Plan B skipped right on to you.
You nearly jumped out of your chair but managed to only give a startled gasp. Wheeling around, you came face to face with Plan B. For a glorified chunk of metal, it sure did move quietly.
"Are you alright?" said chunk of metal asked with a surprising amount of realism to his...its tone. "I detected a sudden increase in your heart rate. Are you in need of medical attention?"
You stared, temporarily taken aback by its sudden appearance. Sure, you were briefed on the purpose of the Auxiliary Crisis Sensory Emulating Learner, or ACSEL for short, but seeing one activated was an entirely new experience. The almost lifelike expression was truly something to behold, and you really ought to give a shout-out to the techs back home who made this happen. If you made it home...
Which led back to the matter at hand.
"No, I'm okay. You just surprised me, that's all," you sighed. "I didn't receive a notification that you were activated."
The ACSEL unit tilted its head and narrowed its eyes as if contemplating. It really was going to take some time getting used to those mannerisms on an android. "Perhaps there is an error in the ship's software?" It lightly smiled while extending its right hand towards you. "The CS Zenith is equipped with self-diagnostics and repair, yes? If I may, I would like to run an additional test. Permission to proceed, Lieutenant?"
You blinked, finally breaking yourself away from your thoughts to fall back into professionalism. Standing up and squaring your shoulders, you firmly shook his - its hand. To your ever-growing surprise, it was warm and smooth, yet undeniably solid. Almost like silicone.
"Granted," you replied before stepping to the side. It easily slid into the pilot's chair and instantly brought up the ship's readings. Nothing had changed. You watched in silent fascination while the android worked the dashboard as if it had years of experience under its belt. But your curiosity returned, and you found yourself wondering just how long it took to make something as complex as the ACSEL unit. Its designer obviously modeled it off of human anatomy, not too dissimilar to a store mannequin. The white exterior was a stark contrast to the muted colors of the cockpit. Gray lines decorated its body, allowing seamless, free-range movement that added to the realism. Give it a wig, slap some clothes on it, hide the port at the base of its head and you could definitely see someone mistaking the machine for a human. It even imitated a non-robotic masculine timbre almost perfectly.
The most intriguing thing about it though was the eyes. Glowing, electric blue eyes.
"Lieutenant?"
"Yes?"
"While my system processes the damages, would you like to begin personalization?"
You raised a brow. "What for? I had thought you would be outfitted with knowledge about my basic information once you were activated?"
The android flicked a switch on the dashboard, allowing a port to be exposed before inserting its index finger. In any other situation, it would have been comical, but you surmised that this was a part of the machine's processing. "And you would be correct. However, I am referring to myself. One of my functions is personalization to assist with lessening the emotional and psychological impact that an emergency could have. Once I have established that the current environment is stable enough for such, of course," it explained before pausing. "In short, it is to make you feel more comfortable."
"Right..." you trailed off, idly scratching your cheek.
"The process is completely optional if you are satisfied with my default settings," it added gently. " I do not wish to provide you with unnecessary stress."
Chuckling, you waved him - it off dismissively. "It's not that. I just...never mind. How about starting with what I should address you as?"
It gave you a side glance, lips turned upwards once more. "I respond to my model and serial number, A.C.S.E.L. 749710145-121111117-110-103, but due to its length I can be assigned a temporary moniker of your choosing until I undergo a factory reset."
You were sorely tempted to name it something utterly ridiculous. You could almost feel the disapproval from your superior officer at the mere thought of it.
"If it aids you at all, the engineers had named me Blue during my trial period," it offered.
How innovative.
"Blue works," you said at last, much to the android's delight. Could it even feel such a thing? It certainly seemed so as you watch its smile turn into a wide grin and the blue irises rotated in recognition. Nevertheless, you returned the smile albeit hesitantly. "Status update."
"Ah...my systems have confirmed the Zenith has experienced internal engine failure, significant damage to the transmitter and faulty wiring to the navigation. Causes are inconclusive. Hull integrity and life support are operating at 100% efficiency. The estimated time of repair is between 96 and 125 hours."
You relaxed ever-so-slightly. A week wouldn't make much of an impact on your scheduled three-month journey to Alpha Centauri's space outpost. And with the beacon activated, your chances of getting out of here unscathed are highly in your favor. "Noted. Then proceed as needed. I'm going to check on the cargo," you stated.
"No need, Lieutenant," Blue assured while standing. It approached you before clasping its hands behind its back. "I will take that responsibility while you rest. You have been showing signs of minor sleep deprivation in addition to a decrease in your epinephrine levels."
Perplexed, you crossed your arms, suddenly feeling a wave of self-consciousness. "You can gauge my adrenaline? How?"
Maybe you said that a bit too forcefully because Blue actually flinched, as if surprised at your tone. Never in your life did you think you would feel regret for snapping at a machine. You must really be more exhausted than you thought.
"Not through nefarious means, I promise," he - it faltered. "My optic sensors can detect even the subtlest of movements. I...I noticed your body language gradually became more relaxed and your heart rate slowed. My intention was not to cause you distress, Lieutenant. I apologize."
Jesus Christ, you genuinely felt bad now.
"Uh, don't be. I should be apologizing. Getting snippy with you was highly unprofessional," you murmured wearily. Rubbing your left temple, you glanced up to see him observing you with an open stare. Looking closely, you could see his irises whirling. Processing information, perhaps? "Blue?"
It blinked and smiled as if amused. "Apologizing to a machine is unnecessary. I do not feel offended. Though I suppose the gesture is an indication of your good nature, so I thank you."
"You're...welcome?" That's enough weirdness for one day, you thought to yourself. "I will go take my leave then if you don't need me for anything else."
"Not at all, Lieutenant. Please sleep well."
"You too." Biting your tongue, you inwardly cringed at your automatic response. "I mean-"
Blue laughed, apparently unfazed by your slip up. "I shall, thank you."
As you departed from the cockpit, you rubbed the heel of your palm against your right eye. It was the strangest thing; talking to a machine that seemed so human. The FAAE had an abundance of the latest technology, including interactive AI programs. But Blue was the most advanced piece of work you had ever interacted with. It was almost jarring.
The walk back to your quarters was a short one, as the Zenith was one of the smaller cargo ships. Your room lacked any personal items and only housed the bare necessities such as a bed, closet, a small desk, and bathroom. The lights flickered on and the door hissed shut, leaving you to bask in privacy. Eyelids heavy, you decided to shower in the morning. A casual glance at your holopad showed the time back home: 8:47 A.M.
Make that in the evening.
Zipping down your flight suit, you tossed it on the chair before rummaging your closet for a shirt and sweatpants. "Computer. Set an alarm for 4:00 P.M."
      ◇─◇──◇────◇────◇────◇────◇────◇─────◇──◇─◇
The cockpit was relatively silent, save for the gentle hum of the reactor core only Blue could hear. Most of the overhead lights had been dimmed, indicating that the Lieutenant had gone to sleep. The android remained in the chair, perfectly still for 72.8 seconds before closing its eyes.
"ACSEL Unit reporting to Professor Thorne. Do you copy?"
Static feedback permeated its receptors. It felt its nonexistent brow crease in concentration. A few moments passed until it could faintly hear a reply.
"Proceed," was the garbled response.
"Preparing to upload visual and audio recordings as well as acquired data to the server...now." The surge of data left its system almost instantaneously, even from such a distance.
Thorne gave a pleased hum. "Continue your directive and ensure the subject remains incognizant until your arrival. Understood?" they emphasized.
"Yes, Professor."
The connection abruptly ended and Blue rapidly blinked back into focus.
Only the sight of stars and the vastness of space greeted the android. Tilting its head to the side, Blue zoomed in as much as his optics would allow on a particular star. The celestial body remained as but a speck of light to its viewpoints. These rare moments of free agency were captivating, and although it could merely emulate emotion, Blue's receptors always reacted positively. It struggled to understand why the professor always voiced against it. No matter. Such a variable was not programmed within its systems to be of concern. Even so, it remained enamored by the dangerous amalgamations of hydrogen and helium that roamed the universe.
"아름다운..." Blue whispered, unaware that it had spoken at all.
