8. How slow is a slow burn?

I am so bad as accurately pacing a fic so this is something that. Is hard to say. But I think there's no hard limit to how short or long a slow burn actually is. What makes something a slow burn is a combination of 2 criteria: a) the length of time the story takes place over, and b) how long it takes for the reader to get from plot point to plot point. If you consider something like Romeo & Juliet, it takes place in-universe over the course of like a couple days, and you are constantly moving from story beat to story beat since the work is meant to be enjoyed in one presentation. It's complex and moving, but I think we all can agree it's not a slow-burn, more of a sudden explosion lol. Some people may think that sitting around 20k words it's not a short work, and for a play it's average (about 2 hours) but it's only 1/5 the length of a standard novel! (100k)

But if we imagine Romeo & Juliet taking place over say 4 months, and each 5000 words is a moment where he's come to Juliet's window one night each month, and nothing else about the story is different, the entire tone changes to something longer and drawn-out. In fact, I think it's probably possible for a skilled author to write a convincing long burn in 10k words or less if the internal and external pacing of the story is right. I also think it's probably possible to write a slow-burn that takes place within one universe day, but I think the pacing for that would require more words.

In reality, slow burn just needs to feel long, even if it isn't actually long.

24. Thoughts on flashbacks/flash forwards.

GO. FUCKING. WILD. Make time your bitch. Laugh at the linear progression of cause and effect. Storytelling is this weird abstraction where all of time exists at once and won't ever exist again. A well-placed flashback or flash forward will enhance the story by revealing hidden motive, establishing dramatic irony, or building anticipation. Be fucky with time. It's already fake and gay—with your help, we can make it faker and gayer! 🫵

Naturally, like any trope or tool, there's always a time and place when a flashback or flashforward is most effective, and sometimes it won't be. But as long as it doesn't feel pointless, as long as it feels like it's a scene we need, they're great to use! I started really playing with time and flashes in Maelstrom fic because of the villain, and it's the funnest thing even in relatively minor jumps of minutes or hours. DON'T BE AFRAID TO USE FLASH JUMPS THEY ARE GOOD AND FUN!!! 👍👍👍

25. Is writing the whole thing beforehand better or worse than writing it as you go?

I wish I was the kind of person who could write the whoke thing beforehand, because I think that + careful editing really is the best way to create a cohesive, well-balanced narrative but right now i just... dont work like that lol. I feel like i have to be extra diligent in keeping track ofnplot threads and potential holes and such. But on the other hand I think I prefer it this way because I get a lot of good feedback on what's working via comments! Especially in long running fics like Maelstrom or Zubat Fangs I refer to comments a lot when trying to decide how hard to hit certain plot points. I'm always open to (polite) constructive criticism on my fics bc of that!

33. Give your writing a compliment.

I think my writing brings people joy :) in all sorts of ways! My silly writing, my angsty writing, my gorey writing.... it all makes someone's day a little better at some point, and I take a lot of pride in that. I can also look back over the years and see how much my skills have improved since I uploaded my first fanfiction decades ago, which I think I still have on a floppy somewhere lol.

I've gotten so confident that I'm starting to more and more seriously consider working on my original fiction and well 😬 I'd like to publish something professionally. Even if I only self-pubklish an e-book or smth. I think I'm about there!!!

38. "This never happened" fix-it fics or "this happened but" fix-it-fics.

Definitely "this happened but" fix-its. I got my start in pokemon fics naturally and one thing you never see the end of are "Ash is a better trainer and never got pikachu" fix-its which. I mean. Eh. Sure. There's nothing wrong with that per say but like. To me it's the same as writing a coffee shop AU. You're telling a different story conpletely. And of course there's degrees, because sometimes the change is smaller and what that means is the story is basically the same. Idk. There's nothing wrong with that but it doesn't make me excited. "Yes BUT" feels like its adding onto something, not just altering it. 🤔

Victoria 3 Innovation and Tech Penalties

Welcome to our Victoria 3 Innovation and Tech Penalties guide. If you're dying to learn about the arcane tech penalty involved with innovation and how it affects you, look no further. Victoria 3 Innovation and Tech Penalties

There are two primary methods of obtaining technologies: directly, and indirectly. Directly is the self-directed method of picking your current research. Indirectly refers to the technologies you receive via tech spread. Innovation

As the tooltip covers, innovation is simple and straightforward. All nations generate a base rate of 50 innovation per week. This value is unchanging, and caps out at 200 innovation. This cap is determined by multiplying your country's literacy rate by 1.5x, providing up to 150 from 100% literacy. However, literacy does not provide any direct innovation. For that, you need to build universities, which initially provide 2 innovation per level at the beginning of the game. Depending on your starting literacy and economy, just building 5 universities at game start can provide you with a 20% tech boost (50 to 60). Innovation Cap

The innovation cap is also an important variable to know about as well, since many may believe the innovation cap to be the absolute limit for how many universities you should build. But in reality, any surplus innovation points you don't benefit directly from here, are redistributed to bolster your weekly technology spread. However, an extremely important point to be aware of is that technology spread can only occur if another country in the world has researched it. It won't matter if you build 1,000 universities if nobody's researched tanks— you're not getting tanks. Technology Spread

As you can see in the screenshot (from the same country at start), technology spread is modified by your free speech laws (Protected Speech gives +25% modifier), if you're an isolationist country, a great power or not, and your literacy value, scaled to 75% of the max. This means that without any modifiers factored in, your max baseline spread is 100 points, or half of your active research project. Protected Speech bumps this up by 25%, along with any unused innovation points from your universities. Incidentally, this is what happens when you don't immediately pick a tech project: those points get added to the technologies being researched via spread. It's not in the screenshot above, but once you hit your direct innovation cap, all surplus points are not wasted, but redirected to technology spread. So if your economy can support it, building up your universities to gain more simultaneous technologies may be a viable approach. A Brief Look at the Tech Penalty We've all been there: you're researching techs, but some cost 23 months, others cost 36 months, and for some reason the last tier will take 83 years? What? Fear not, citizen. For it is through some quick maths that you shall come to learn how this penalty is calculated. The Tech Penalty In short, every single technology beyond the first tier of technologies has an associated technology penalty if you don't finish the entire previous tier. This penalty is dependent on two factors: how many techs aren't finished, and how many tiers you're jumping. If you're only skipping a couple of techs, the added cost isn't too onerous. But if you're trying to cut through T2 and T3 to get a T4 tech, you're likely in for a bad time. Base Costs of Tech - Tier 1 - 5000 - Tier 2 - 7500 - Tier 3 - 10000 - Tier 4 - 12500 - Tier 5 - 15000 Tech Cost Formula Tech's Additional Cost = Tech Base Cost * (X * 0.25) (Y) Where X is the number of unfinished technologies of the previous tier, and Y is the number of tiers being skipped. The base cost is the base cost of the tech being researched, not the unfinished tech. Let's take a T3 tech as an example, which has a base cost of 10k, and look at a scenario where you beeline a T3 Society tech, ignoring the 12 other techs on T2 (giving us 1/13 researched). Here's what the added cost would look like: Z = 10000 * (12 * 0.25) (1) Z = 10000 * (3) Z = 30000 This gives us a total cost of 40k, or 4x as much as the tech would cost had we just finished the rest of the tier. A more useful way to look at the numbers is how many techs you could have finished with the same amount of innovation: 30k excess (12 unfinished techs) is equal to 4 T2 techs 20k excess (8 unfinished techs) is equal to 2.6 T2 techs. 10k excess (4 unfinished techs) is equal to 1.3 T2 techs. As you can see with how base tech cost scales in each tier, this ratio shouldn't change. Victoria 3 Some Other Brief Numbers for Innovation and Tech Penalties Since this is all meant to act as a handy resource, I've also compiled some other helpful numbers here. Of course, since everyone starts with parts of T1 and T2 finished, depending on who you're playing, this list will vary a bit in the early tiers. Given this fact, I've also added together all T3 to T5 tech costs, just so you have a better idea of how much innovation you need. Innovation per Level, per Tech Production Tech - T1 Techs: 8 = 40k - T2 Techs: 13 = 97.5k - T3 Techs: 16 =160k - T4 Techs: 14 = 175k - T5 Techs: 5 = 75k T3+T4+T5 = 410k innovation Military Tech - T1 Techs: 12 = 60k - T2 Techs 10 = 75k - T3 Techs: 13 = 130k - T4 Techs: 12 = 150k - T5 Techs: 10 = 150k T3+T4+T5 = 430k innovation Society Tech - T1 Techs: 18 = 90k - T2 Techs: 13 = 97.5k - T3 Techs: 11 = 110k - T4 Techs: 9 = 112.5k - T5 Techs: 8 = 120k T3+T4+T5 = 332.5k innovation Overall Taken together, all T3-T5 techs will cost 1,172,500 innovation. With a base spread of 50 innovation per week, and not taking technology spread into account at all, this would take 450 years to finish. If doubled to 100 base, this is shaved down to 225 years. And if doubled again to the 200 direct innovation cap, 112 years. Mind you, this is just Tier 3 to Tier 5 tech, and without spread. This underscores the importance of tech spread in helping to remove tech penalties across the entire game. It might not help you get tanks by the end, but it can help cut down on unfinished techs so you can focus on it if that's your goal. The Numbers in Brief Here's the actual wording of the code, just so you can look at what it says. Progress bonuses appear to refer to the specific event rewards for journal entries, such as the 'Establish a University' entry giving 1650 innovation for medical degrees or empiricism. era_1 = { #Pre-1836 technology_cost = 5000 # for progress bonuses, use an approximate third: 1650} era_2 = { #1836-1861 technology_cost = 7500 # for progress bonuses, use a third: 2500} era_3 = { #1862-1886 technology_cost = 10000 # for progress bonuses, use an approximate third: 3000} era_4 = { #1887-1911 technology_cost = 12500 # for progress bonuses, use an approximate third: 4000} era_5 = { #1911-1936 technology_cost = 15000 # for progress bonuses, use a third: 5000} TECH_AHEAD_OF_TIME_PENALTY_FACTOR = 0.25 # For every tech in a previous era not already researched in this category, take this multiple of the cost as an additional penalty (multiplied by number of eras between the techs) Event Choices This section is just for event comparisons between university throughput or raw innovation, since the first major one a lot of players will run into is the reward from 'Establish a University', which triggers once 3 universities are built in the same state. Initially, my gut reaction was to take the throughput bonus, since more research is always better, right? As it turns out, that wasn't actually the case. This is because early on, if you aren't building a considerable number of universities early on, you actually take a substantially lower amount of innovation compared to one of the two tech options. The decision gives you a 25% university throughput bonus for 5 years, or 1650 progress in Medical Degrees or Empiricism (33% progress, not counting possible spread). But a university only provides 2 innovation per level at default production methods. So if I built 5 universities, as I do early on as Japan, I'm only getting 10 (or maybe slightly more, if university throughput affects innovation numbers. I don't think so though) innovation per week. So that 25% bonus only amounts to 2.5 innovation gained. We then multiply this by 52 and 5, giving us a grand total of 650 innovation. Or at base innovation rates, 13 weeks of progress (or with the 5 universities, just under 11 weeks of progress). More Event Choices This is compared to the tech options, which give 1650 innovation. As such, you would need to build 13 universities to generate enough raw innovation (6.5; 0.5 per level of university) to be meaningfully boosted by the 25% output bonus to be superior to the direct tech option. This also doesn't take into consideration the build times needed for the additional 10 universities (the event fires at 3, no matter what, with a 90-day delay), so the real number of universities need initially would be higher. In reality though, you're limited by how many universities you can field by the strength of your economy. For example, Japan can't build 15 universities early on, or they'll bankrupt themselves. As such, it's up to you to decide your tech priorities, and if that minor boost outweighs the higher flat boost. Victoria 3 Innovation and Tech Penalties Outro That's all I got. Innovation is a pretty important stat, whether directly applied or indirectly via technology spread. It's difficult to judge the precise impact of technology spread, but it's clearly vital to getting all techs before the game ends— which I'll steadfastly maintain is far too short. And regardless of innovation rates, the strength of your economy is the most important variable in the game, as there's no point building them early on if you can't even support them without going broke (as non-GPs suffer huge interest penalties). So this is a decision that'll always depend on your personal comfort levels, economy, and overall plan for innovation. “I've been thinking about Afghanistan over the past few days, as many of you have, as well. It's obviously a crazily complex and chaotic system right now, and it would be hard to predict how things play out in the coming weeks or months. There could very easily be a confrontation between Taliban forces and US/Coalition forces in Kabul. That really depends on unit cohesion and chain-of-command durability on the Taliban side - with the big question being, "How far can we push them during the evacuation?" 

After a hideous day or two at the airport about a week ago, it seems that something like an orderly evacuation is in process. Sure, it's crazy. Sure, there are thousands of people outside the airport, desperate to get in. But no one is flushing onto the runways. That happened in an understandable panic when the Ghani government fled (with hundreds of millions of dollars in their luggage), and the Taliban emerged from all over Kabul. Note this: You never saw video of an army triumphantly marching on the capital city. Why? Well, eerie as it may be, it's because they were already there. 

As of two days ago, C-130 flights have been leaving on the hour, and we're clearing about 5000 people a day. Given that we've set a schedule of last-wheels-up for August 31, that means we'll move about another 50,000 allies and vulnerable families out of the country, and to make sure we are maximizing those efforts, it appears that some forward actions have been taken. French forces went and grabbed some of their people two days ago from a house in Kabul. Yesterday, a Chinook helicopter hopped over to the Baron Hotel, a few hundred meters from the airport to grab some folks. More of that will likely happen, which might - just might - cause a reaction from Taliban forces on the ground. That could get very ugly, very quickly, and I'd imagine there are lines of communication open between Taliban leadership and US military leadership to prevent that from happening. Oddly, as politics make strange bedfellows, the Biden Administration, the US Military, and the Taliban all want the same thing right now. They want the US out of Afghanistan, and can likely be marshaled in that direction. Still, near-term chaos could ensue if someone on the ground gets pissy. 

That stuff is all really unclear. But blow the perceptual lens out a bit - to the next few years - and things get a little clearer. 

1) Very soon, western military forces will be gone from the country, at least in sizeable formations. Never doubt the penetrative capacity of US Special Forces, but the force presence will likely be down to dozens, rather than thousands. 

2) The Taliban will need to figure out how to run a country. They clearly have some capacity for taxation and enforcement, but the rest of it - maintaining a power grid, providing water and electric infrastructure, some semblance of healthcare - will be an enormous challenge. Also, as they'll be attempting to fund a state, they'll need significantly more resources than they have required so far for the support of an advancing army. The 2019 GDP of Afghanistan was about $20 billion dollars. For comparison, the GDP of New York State is $1.5 trillion. So, it's not a rich country, and for the past 20 years, a sizable percentage of that wealth came in from US military largess - and most of THAT got siphoned off to a corrupt cadre of elites who managed to be such awful people that their countrymen would rather have the Taliban in charge - and that's something. 

The GDP of that troubled nation is going to take a massive hit this year, on top of which, the Biden Administration has recently frozen about $10 billion dollars of Taliban funds that they had secured in US banks - which is mindblowing in and of itself. 

So, how do they get that money back? How do they entice other foreign investors to provide the needed resources? How do they do that in a region of the world where there are predators on all sides? It's gonna be mighty tricky, but one potential way forward would be to TRY and reform their most brutal of practices.

No one has any illusions about the Taliban becoming liberal adherents of Enlightenment principles, but maybe there will be a push for fewer public execution festivals in the town football pitch? Maybe rather than banning all women and girls from reading, they'll keep the schools open, but demand the girls dress in burkhas. I don't know if that will be the case, but there are at least some early signs that some "moderate" Taliban will lean that way.  This leads to the next likely scenario a year or two out. 

Civil War. 

3. Go back through your history of radicals taking over as governing forces. The French Revolution is the most commonly used example of what happens when purists are put into the position of actually running a state. Though you could also look to Ireland in 1922-23. This is admittedly analogy as history and might be completely wrong, but my sense is there's a real possibility of the Taliban fracturing along "reformist" and "purist" wings. IF the Taliban leadership tries to live inside the rules of the community of nations; if they try to moderate their practices to encourage investment and growth, THEN you might very likely see the rise of a revanchist faction who really, truly believes the world should be returned to the fashion of seventh century Saudi Arabia. 

Add to that potential chaos the reality that small fiefdoms of well-armed local leaders with significant self-interest in controlling the flow of limited resources will emerge all over the country, and these past years could end up looking rather peaceful by comparison - which would bring us to the next point - Afghanistan is in an ugly, ugly neighborhood for geopolitics. 

4. Afghanistan is bordered by four major geopolitical forces. Pakistan to the south, Iran to the west. China to the east, and Russia (under its regional proxies, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan) to the north. For the past twenty years, the United States has been on the ground, and that served to limit (but not stop) their influence in the region. Of the four major players, Pakistan has been particularly active in supporting the Taliban and allowing them to have cross-border safe-havens which made defeating them practically impossible. 

But how in the hell will those four power centers resolve the coming decades in what will likely be a very chaotic, poor, corrupt, and broken land? Russia and China will both be working hard and brutally to blunt the spread of militant Islam on their borders. Pakistan will now need to deal with its violent attack dogs as a neighboring government, potentially destabilizing the political reality of Pakistan itself. As to Iran . . . my Lord, I have no clue. All I know is that the Taliban are Sunni and the Ayatollahs are Shi'a - and that's its own 1000-year-old can of worms.

I've been writing this now for an hour or so. I do that sometimes just to try and think through the complexities, and I end where I began. No matter how ugly these past few days have been, I think that Biden both made the right choices, and is doing a pretty damn good job, all things considered. The pressures on Afghanistan are brutal - the poverty, the corruption, the geopolitical crucible in which it sits, the religious divisions, the tribal rivalries, the forces of modernization and radical revanchism, the international finances. Ugh. 

Back in 1820, Thomas Jefferson wrote a letter to John Holmes. The subject was the Missouri Compromise which threatened to destabilize the nation by expanding slavery to the West but kept it whole by allowing Maine to join in the East - thereby balancing the interests of Northern free-staters, and Southern slavers. He understood that slavery ultimately would provide to great an internal pressure to keep the country whole - and he feared the day those forces would eventually tear us apart. He wrote of slavery that "we have the wolf by the ear, we can neither safely hold it, nor safely let it go." 

That's been the case with Afghanistan since we first invaded nearly 20 years ago, and as the fourth President who had to make this choice, Joe Biden finally accepted it was time to make Afghanistan someone else's problem. Yeah, he got bit by the wolf. Yeah, a lot of people are going to suffer. But when you look ahead at the absolute horrorshow of Central Asia in the next fifty years, my sense is that history will determine he made the right terrible choice.

THE TRUMP CARDS OF MONEY AND POWER

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is currently hovering around the $200 Billion mark by way of personal wealth – which makes him the richest individual in the world at the moment. The freedom of choice such wealth must bring must also be somewhat limited by the size of the identifiable and unidentifiable moving targets that accompanies it – along with the difficulty of finding a purpose in life that isn’t defined by money.

Money, in itself, is an easily identifiable measure of financial, industrial and personal success, (or failure), which naturally promotes third party endorsement, (or degradation), of character. I don’t know Jeff Double Ton Billionaire – never met the man –  but like most reasonable people am more than happy to wish him a ‘Well Done Pal’, with a degree of admiration for his achievement before moving on to wondering how I’m going to pay last month’s electric bill.

The reality or idea of money is one of those things we all think we innately understand enough about and rarely consider a need for further definition - while being constantly reminded that money, by any definition, dominates our day to day lives.

By formal definition money is: any object or item accepted as payment for goods and services and repayment of debts in a given jurisdiction or socio-economic context.

By equally formal definition the primary functions of money can be set out as: a medium of exchange; a unit of account; a store of value and a standard of deferred payment

Dictionary like definitions pretty much always require further explanation which is often lazily translated through the iteration of interesting ‘facts’  which can be fun but not that helpful:

Q: When and where was money first used?

A: Bibliographical and architectural research puts it at about 5000 years ago that a form of money was used in Mesopotamia (today we call the area Turkey, Syria, Kuwait, Iran & Iraq). The currency used was called the ‘shekel’.

(Relevant fact: The earliest known manufacturing of money as a standard – meaning weighed and stamped in a mint - happened about 650 years before Jesus saw the light of day. The Head Honchos of Lydia and Ionia (part of today’s Turkey), used replicated silver and gold coins to pay for organized armies)

Q: How much money is there in the world?

A: Using the American Dollar, to calculate, there is, according to the World Bank, in the region of $37 trillion in circulation world-wide which takes into account all the physical money and any money registered as being deposited in savings and current bank accounts.

(Relevant Fact: Money in the form of investments, derivatives and crypto currencies is estimated to exceed $1.2 quadrillion – and that’s a number word you don’t often hear).

Staying on the Q&A thing and bringing the current richest man in the world back into the narrative:

Q: How powerful does the Amazon man’s money make him?

A: In 1917 John D Rockefeller could have paid off the entire US Government debt from his personal wealth. Today Jeff Bezos’ entire fortune would just about cover the cost of a couple of month’s interest on America’s national debt.

Q: How rich is Jeff Bezos in comparison to rich people throughout history?

A: Financial forensic evidence suggests the richest person ever was Genghis Khan, who had a minimum estimate of $900 billion at his disposal - making this ‘great’ despot of the 13th century, four and a half times richer than our bargain bookseller of the 21st century.

(Relevant Fact: Muammar al Gaddafi was personally worth about $25 billion more than Jeff Bezos when that Libyan leader was dragged from a culvert to keep an appointment with a fatal bloody beating)

As I said, fun stuff but not any real help in better defining money.

My Great Uncle Matt once told me – when he was full of porter and waxing lyrical on the value and importance of our modern day shekels:

‘…… the thing is Sonny, ye need enough not to worry and not so much as to cause ye to worry ….’

Which makes some sense in an everyday existence but what about when you hit a point in personal wealth where you don’t worry, (or not worry), about your dosh?

Then, it would seem, a need for distraction often reveals itself in the pursuit of power and its accompanying drivers as the quicksilver option – that apparently takes one into an elevated financial void where it all gets a bit farfetched and beyond most normal people’s comprehension.

The leader of the free world at the moment is preoccupied with both power and money – both of which he apparently has and both of which he seems to be rapidly losing control of – he’s using his power to protect his money and his money to protect his power – a hard enough station that - one must assume - brings with it a degree of worry. 

For the record I believe such a predicament is his - and  therefore the only real - driving force behind this particular upcoming US presidential election.

To me Donald Trump, (and a host of people like him up and down the financial scale), is the personification of the terror of money and how it has the ability to remove any and all redeeming features in a human being. It’s hard not to see Trump as the ultimate dire example of insidious excess brought about by money.

(Relevant Fact: The untenable truth being, in my experience, there are many with enough money - to not worry or pretend not to worry about money - who aren’t that far behind the attitude and behaviour of ‘The Donald’ - I’ve met lots of them in everyday life as I’m sure many of us have.)

All of which begs the final oft asked question (which goes a long way to defining money for me):

A: Ah yeah!

Sorry that its so long! Please have patience. There is a reason why I wrote it all out like this. I wanted my thought process to be understood through the story. I doubt anything like this will happen again in my life and I wanted to share it with all of you :)

Background:

I work as a sub-contractor for an actually licensed contractor for a reality company. Basically, the realty company buys houses, and the contractor tells us to go to the new address, and my coworkers and I flip the house and get it ready to be rented out. When I first started a job, it was a difficult transition considering I was a plumber previously but, eventually I became a valuable asset to Contractor’s company thus the realty company as well. The contractor was infamous for being a bit of an ass when it came to actual business and money. He was constantly yelling and screaming at the plumber, the painters, etc. about prices and how it took them too long and he wasn’t paying that much. Which I would understand if the yelling was actually warranted. When it became tax season, he gave everyone else a 1099 and then said he “lost” mine and got pissed off every time I asked about it. (If someone knows what I can do about that please let me know.)

This guy makes easily 2 million a year (so he says) so I don’t really think $100 off the price matters that much. Not enough to get into a screaming match and ruin relationships with the other sub-contractors. I have been working for him for about a year now at 16/hr. Not too bad for my area but, I make him a lot more a day than the $160 I make every 10-hour work day.

One day I asked him for a raise, which he laughs and shuts me down immediately. After that, I decide to work harder, get houses done faster, and show him that I deserve a raise. A few months later, I decide to ask for a raise again but not as directly. “How could I be more useful to the company? So, I can increase my productivity, and both of us can make more money?” He said, “Get a van and a trailer and then we can talk about more money,” in his normal gruff tone that says, “shut up and get back to work”. After that day, I worked side jobs here and there. Worked a lot later that I usually would, and even all throughout the weekend. Saving up as much money as possible. I sometimes wouldn’t eat some days just to save that little bit of money.

He loved how much I was getting done and I could practically see the dollar signs in his eyes when I told him all that I got done every day. Finally, the day came where I saved up just enough money to buy my Dad’s old ford van. Then not long after, I bought a little piece of crap 5x10 trailer that I had to fix up. The following Monday I pull up with the bright white gas guzzler and the fixed-up trailer following behind. I walked up to him smiling ear to ear about my accomplishment, hoping he would be proud or at least happy about all that I have done. I tell him to look at my new toys and all he says is “cool,” and got in his truck and left. “Okay, maybe he’s just busy,” I thought as I processed his extremely underwhelming response.

At the end of the day, I finally have a moment with him to discuss my raise. “So! I have the van, and the trailer. I have saved up and done everything you said that I needed to do to make more money and be more of an asset to this company.” He narrows his eyes at me, “What are you talking about?” “You said that if I got a van and a trailer that you would pay me more,” I said confused. “I never said any of that shit. You have to actually work if you want anything else from me.”

I was devastated. I have been working my ass off while he sat on his ass and watched. I followed every instruction, completed in the very least two houses a week (which he makes about $5000~ per house or so he says) and he acts like I do nothing for the company. I swallowed my pride and let out a quick, “Yes sir,” and left his office.

I was finally tired of dealing with Contractor. Tired and defeated, I decided it was time to start looking for other jobs that actually had the possibility to move up. Then the company electrician gave me an idea. (I am going to call him Adam for privacy reasons) Adam is a good guy all around. If you needed advice or, just someone to talk to, he was always there for you. I told him about everything that has happened with Contractor and told him I was looking for other jobs.

He simply said,” You’re not supposed to be here to try and make it to the top. You’re here to learn. Learn everything you can and then one day, you’ll be the contractor. A better one than Contractor for sure. Why not look into getting your general contracting license? Its not hard, you just have to work for it. That’s what I did to an extent. I worked for Contractor for years dealing with his bullshit. Until one day I decided to get my electrician’s license. Now, he doesn’t decide what I’m paid. I do. That is, if he wants me to work for him. And if not, then I have other customers to make my living.”

I took his words to heart and came up with a plan.

Revenge:

I did some research on becoming a general contractor in my state (Requirements differ in other states).

Basically, I would need books to learn the material, references, a bank reference, and to pass the test.

The books were pretty expensive. With bills, taking care of my family and a monthly van payment, it seemed impossible for now. Until I found a group following in my area that needed a handyman to do a variety of things. Perfect. Extra money. Soon, my name started blowing up in my small town. I did everything from repairing fences, to installing toilets. I took everything I learned from plumbing and from working for Contractor and used it to build a reputation. References: check.

This is when I decided it was time to open my own business. Again, I did my research and learned all I had to do to open said business. I’ll spare you the details but, it was basically business license, how the get an LLC, Liability insurance, think of a name NOT already taken blah blah blah.

It took a while, but I sent in all that I had and prayed to whatever god is there for me to be invited to take the test. I waited and wait until about three weeks and FINALLY I got a letter inviting me to the next test... it was a three-hour drive and on a Tuesday. Great another speed bump. Have to miss work AND pay $300.

The day of the test came, and I panicked. It was open book but, I eventually ran out of time and didn’t get to finish. I was so disappointed in myself that I basically gave up. I just decided to keep working my job and a little side business. A week later I was holding my son. He is a beautiful blonde-haired blue-eyed reflection of myself. After I managed to get him to sleep, I stared at him and wondered if I would be able to give him a better life than I had. I remember growing up in shitty trailers, being hungry and made fun of at school because I wore clothes from Walmart. Not the best way to grow up but, I had a roof over my head. I always wanted video games that my friends had but never got it. I wanted to go to trampoline parks and water parks. I’ve only been once in my entire life.

That’s about when my resolve renews itself within me. I had to do this. Not only for me but, for him. I saved up all over again and came up with the $300 and requested for a re-take of the test. I took practice tests online, so I was ready. The day came and I BARELY manage to pass. BUT I still pass the test and receive my license! Now time for the fun part.

With all of the time passing, I became pretty close friends with the owner of the reality company. Going to BBQs, stopping to tell him some corny joke I saw on Facebook (he LOVED puns), and doing extra tasks not under Contractor. One day, I came into his office and saw some invoices from Contractor one his desk. I just said,” Wow, that’s how much you’re paying him? Dude, he should at least take it a little bit easy on you being that you have known each other for so long.” He just nodded and said,” You think so?” and he just looked at the papers more. Since then I would say little comments about how much Contractor was being paid and how many houses we could buy with that money. Just planting seeds in his mind that I slowly water until they turn into a beautiful garden of resentment.

Finally, Owner calls me and wants me to come to his house for a beer and to “talk business”. (We’ve done this a few times before. It’s usually about his wife or hit last time he played golf). I pull into his driveway, and he told me to meet him out back. After the usual how-are-yous he tells me that him and Contractor had a bit of an argument and they are “limiting” him from now on. Then, he turned to me, and said,” There is a meeting Friday. I want you there at 9 o’clock.” I hesitate. I wasn’t sure what it could have been. (You know how your parents would ask “Do you have something to tell me?” and as a kid you would go into a panic and think about all the bad shit you did at school? No? Just me? Okay.)

“Sure, I’ll be there.” I manage to say calmly through a scrambled mind. A few beers and stories about fishing trips, I headed home.

That was today. (4/30/19) I was so excited to write this, I started as soon as I got home. The meeting is on Friday. If you want me to, I’ll update after the meeting.

Sorry it was so long. I guess I was excited/scared of what is about to happen. The way I see it, it can go one of two ways.

I could be asked to take Contractors place and have Contractor work for me.

They fought about what I had said about prices, and they came to an agreement that they need to confront me and/or fire me.

Update: IT HAPPENED. OH MY FREAKING GOD.

So I went to the meeting this morning, and as I came in everyone shook my hand. Some i've seen before and said my "Hi how are you"s to, others I have never met in my life. THIS WAS AN INVESTOR MEETING. Some of these people are worth figures in the nine digits. I was internally freaking out after finding out, but if you've read, you'd know I know ho to keep my cool. After our greetings, we sat down and waited. It wasn't clear who we were waiting on until an hour later Contractor walks in with his usual stained T-shirt and cargo shorts, while I am in a nice dress shirt and tie. (Figured I would look nice for this.)

Everyone made a face and greeted Contractor while we got settled again. Contractor didn't seem to notice me until we all sat back down. I saw him do a double take and, give me a look that said, "What the fuck are you doing here?" I had requested off today so I could only imagine what he was thinking. After introducing the new investors to the old investors, Owner got started saying about how we were going to have an amazing 2019 and an amazing future for the company. (I suppose he was just hyping up the new guys so they would invest more.)

About two hours of production values and budget stuff blah blah, He turned to me and said, "I would just like to take the time to congratulate OP for passing the general contractor's exam and his newly acquired business!" I smiled, and thanked him, then he continued. "As we are growing, we have a demand for new and inspiring people within our company. After hearing about OP's success in both our company and his, I would like to personally ask him a question in front of the whole team." (My heart pounding in my throat as each word sounded slower than the last. I took a side glance at Contractor that is visibly sweating at this point.) "OP, how would you like to our new property manager? You may still have your business, and do your own work. But, we will pay you exclusively to be our personal contractor and help take care of all new and old properties." Everyone turns to me and I take a second to respond.

Just then Contractor stand up and says, "What the fuck? I'm your god damn contractor! I've been your contractor for over a decade! You can't just replace me for some dip shit that doesn't know what he is doing!" Owner smugly looks at Contractor and says," We're not replacing you. You will just answer to him now. All tasks, orders and billing will go through him now. If you would like to still work for us, granted you mind your mouth and tone, you will run anything you do by OP. Contractor looks enraged and he turns to me, "YOU"RE FIRED! You have no business here anymore now LEAVE."

Owner chuckles, and says," You don't have that power anymore. As long as OP agrees to my question." I turn to him and say," Are you sure you can afford me?" I laugh and shake his hand. "Yes. This is all I have ever wanted. All that I have worked for. Now we can get some real work done. (I have to admit something, I've been practicing that response since I was asked to come to this meeting lol.) Contractor stormed out of the room, slamming the door behind him and I didn't see him for the rest of the day.

After he left we continued to discuss the goals for this year and its out they bought 60 new houses for me to work on with the investor's money and he just looked at me and said," Can you handle that?" I happily said, "Yes, sir." trying to keep my eyes from watering. All I thought about was my family and how proud they would be of me.

In a little under a year, I received a great license, my own business, and pretty much non-stop work. If there is anything you guys reading can take from this, I hope it will be this: Don't settle in life. Be hungry to better yourself, and be the best person you can be. The only person stopping you is yourself.

Again, I'm sorry that it is so long. When I wrote the first part I have had a few drinks, and when I got home I continued drinking lol. I could condense it but, I'm not going to due to the fact that it was a pure reaction of it all. The puzzle coming together if you will. Thanks for reading!

This is an ongoing thought process I am trying to synthesize. Here is our state affairs, for both the addicted and the men of this world. We enter into a 21st century. Into a way of living that has been significantly altered from our primeval state (in good and bad ways) for about... 5000 years. Major changes. We enter into modernity, post industrialism, the internet age, and suddenly the height of mind development (by way of ego appearance and mind based perception) becomes the norm. While the development of rationality, logic, and the use of the mind as a tool for discernment and the location of truth has hit an apex, our sense of our heart and of a connection to our bodies has disappeared for many of us. We are trapped in our mind without a clear way out. Male dominated culture, which has had its uses and developed - I think - organically for biological and anthropological reasons. However, just like certain processes of natural selection and fear based instinct causing maladaptive patterns of behavior as evidenced by PTSD sufferers, so too has this “way of being” that is rooted in masculinity (overdeveloped mind based reality) caused many of us to veer into a dark, unrooted existence. While it may be true that men as a biological organism are more prone to violence, externalizing behaviors, etc. there is a case to be made that hypermasculinity is the root cause of many, many of the world’s problems. And the people it affects (it really affects everyone) substantially is men. We live a compartmentalized, limited inhumane existence - cut off from the trials and survivalist tendencies of the past, without a great purpose to move our lives forward in a world that sometimes emphasizes a lack of meaning and purpose. Our heads keep us literally cut off from everything around us. Therefore, we develop classes of drug addiction (people attempting to comfort themselves, find union with the divine, and re-root themselves in sensory experience which the mind has become cut off from), we develop people who do not feel the repercussions of their actions, who reject feeling as a necessary way of being (probably because feeling means to experience emotional pain and without a base line of feeling, any emotional pain feels overwhelming). Thereby, the maladapted (aka the normal) male is cut off from true human experience of body, sense, and heart. The overdeveloped mind, seeker of pleasure and “correct” outcome, sets a path whereby the means justifies the ends of behavior. We are literally cut off from our bodies, from any experience of the heart, from actual reality, delusional, and we are much much less for it. The philosophical debates, the endless “rational” inquiries of French existentialism (before and after, really) onward, all interesting and important, seem to create a educated malaise and feed a latent misery that is not easily overcome. Intellectualism. Hyper-rationalism. Knowledge for knowledge’s sake, not for practical ways of being. The Stoics had most of this figured out. No further debate. Yes, life is different today. Life can be a drag for any human. But this class of miserable has very little way out because the means by which the organism perceives and experiences the environment and the paradigms inherent of such a perception are the root cause of the massive amount of suffering. We deny the feminine. We deny, and I hate to pigeonhole what the feminine truly is, an emotional experience of reality (which is our true experience, by the way - study the brain, what runs the show? The limbic system). We deny the “child”-like part of ourselves who wishes to experience wonder and awe. We create a shell of hardness through which nothing but heroin, the most potent weed, liquor, violence, the degradation and subordination of others, the grip of power, and the need to be right become the antidote to a harsh, alien, insufferable existence. No wonder I have alienated myself, the mind’s job is to dissect and analyze and create difference. To create useless “knowledge”. To make a map of the world and to live only in that map, not actual experience. I have said, I am special, I am unique, I am different (which I am and so are you), but am I really so different? The bird wishes to enjoy its life, so do I. So does the cockroach, do does the fern. Women fall into this trap too, I think, by embracing this hypermasculinity. We are so far removed from our true selves. I have to know that in myself I have masculine and feminine components, both equally important, who work together in tandem to create a balance of force, of softness and hardness. Of logic and of the sensory. But the domination of any particular force or part in a system creates a broken machinery. Asymmetry is normal, natural, but nature abhors an organism divided against itself. No wonder we have so many mental health problems. It it right that women are on the surge of great progress and position in society. They are the inborn carriers, by virtue of natural archetypal manifestation, of the solution through which we will become healed. If we deny the divine feminine, we are nothing short of devils, subhuman. That is the vessel through which healing occurs. Masculinity has its place, is important, but if we lose our souls in the name of material progress and the advancement of “ideology”, what have we gained? We owe a lot of thanks certain advantages of modern life that this rigid container of mind based activity has manifested, but there is a diminishing returns. What is the purpose of this life? I think to be happy. Our minds make us very unhappy, I think. Without a proper contact to the heart, to our bodies, to the root of our existence as experiential beings, healing will not occur. The great truth is that any of us at any time are able to explore and re-experience our natural affiliation with different energies and archetypes. It requires a strong psyche, one that can reject fear and societal influence. Or circumstance, personal crisis, that drives a necessary new inquiry. It is a frightening process. Like jumping off a cliff. That has been my experience. I think, by and large, we are doing it. It is happening. None of these categories should be taken too literally. A lot of this is reductionist. The feminine aspect cannot be reduced to a list of words nor can the masculine, it is all beyond words. In all of us, there are a myriad of dynamics, energies, interactions... biological, environmental, experiential, etc. These are only rough scratchings in a post. But we as men (white men especially, I suspect) must learn to turn over our power to the “other” and trust what innate qualities the “other” has to bring to our personal psyche and our societal pain. We either trust and explore or blame and regress. In our hearts, humans are just humans who have been habituated by biology or societal pressures to adapt to a certain form. If we cut ourselves off from experience, the full experience, because of containers or forms we have adapted into (for useful and necessary purposes), we will not experience our true selves. If we cannot experience our true selves, the full breadth of what it means to be alive, surely we will destroy ourselves. We do it on an individual level and a community level. Sometimes on a racial/ethnic/multi-national level. But growth and awakening begins with each individual and thankfully, if there is such a crisis, the crisis of masculinity may be bringing many of us, myself included, kicking and screaming, to understand that how we have been living isn’t right, and what’s more, it’s not necessary. There is so much more out there for us to experience.

The June 27th Post | A homage to Houston rap culture One Time For The Homie DJ Screw | A brief history of Chopped & Screwed music A pioneer of Houston rap music but also the creator and godfather of Chopped and Screwed music. Robert Earl Davis, Jr. aka DJ Screw started slowing down records in the early 90s. He began the Screwed Up Click (SUC) on the Southside of Houston, TX in 1990. The group consist of but is not limited to Big Moe, Lil Keke, Lil Flip, Big Pokey, Mike D, H.A.W.K., Lil-O, Clay Doe, 3-2 and Trae. The notable rap duo UGK (Underground Kings), formed in 1987 and consisting of Chris “Pimp C” Butler & Bernard “Bun B” Freeman, were SUC Affiliated. The click put out over 100 tapes, all produced by Screw, in 1998 alone.
Purple Drank is a popular substance cocktail, popularized by Houston rappers in the 90s. The drink consists of Promethazine and/or Codeine cough syrup mixed with alcohol and/or soda and/or juice. DJ Screw and SUC were avid users of the fusion drink. Unfortunately, the drink comes with lethal side effects such as rapid weight gain, slowed heart rate, loss of balance and addiction. The effects took a toll on Screws life and resulted in an overdose and ultimately his demise. Subsequently, Kenneth “Big Moe” Moore and Pimp C, died within months of each other due to sipping syrup combined with their own individual pre-existing conditions.
Since Screwed Up Records, DJ Screw’s recording studio and record shop were on the Southside the Northside felt the need to compete. So in 1997, Michael “5000” Watts and Ronald “OG Ron C” Coleman established Swishahouse, a record label. Watts was already picking up the slack right before Screw died because Screw had semi paused production due to his constant use of syrup. So naturally, Watts was up next for the Chopped and Screwed scene. Later, in 2011 OG Ron C & the ChopStars would go on to create Chop Not Slop where they essentially do what their predecessors did, make remixes of popular songs and albums where the tempo is slowed tremendously. Swishahouse consists of but is not limited to Slim Thug, Lil Mario, JDawg, Big Tiger, Big Pic, Lester Roy, Archie Lee, Mike Jones, and Lil Keke. If you notice, Lil Keke repped SUC but officially signed with Swishahouse after DJ Screw died. A very political yet sensible move. Big Moe | City of Syrup & Z-RO | Mo City Don My mom played City of Syrup the Chopped version so much when I was a child that I was under the impression that Big Moe was the only artist who sung in a low tone and occasionally would restart his songs by accident. Thankfully my family corrected me. Thus beginning my interest in Chopped and Screwed.
City of Syrup was Big Moe’s debut album and featured hits like “Barre Baby”, “Maan!” and “Freestyle (June 27)”. It featured many artists from Screwed Up Click such as Big Pokey, H.A.W.K., Lil-O, Tate Eyez, Mike D, DJ Screw and Z-RO.
The distance between Alexandria, LA, where my family is from, and Houston, TX is only a little over 200 miles. Most of Alexandria’s music, even to this day, is heavily influenced by Houston artists. So it’s very plausible that my mom’s music taste is influenced a lot by Houston because of where she grew up.
For the year of 2017, I lived in Houston and in more ways than one it was eye opening. I gained a whole new appreciation for music. I made a lot of forever connections so much so that my good friend Sarah, whom I met at work, ended up asking me to be a bridesmaid in her wedding. I humbly agreed. Fast forward to the wedding day and the entire wedding party is being transported to the reception via party bus. The groom has the AUX cord and he began to play a familiar tune. The whole bus began to sing in unison the lyrics to “Mo City Don” by Z-RO. I awed in wonder, wishing I too knew the lyrics. And then, just as the song is about to end, he shoutouts Lake Charles, Lafayette then my hometown of Alexandria. I had such a sense of pride in Alex at that moment.
