WIP EXCERPT

            Footsteps and whispers echoed through the palace as the investigation continued. Agents would no doubt have an update for their king after breakfast, but Christian didn’t want to think about that. He didn’t want to remember that his wife, the mother of his son, was missing. He just wanted to hold her, to tell her that everything was going to be okay. How would he bring her home? What could she be going through at this very moment? Christian didn’t know much of the Choctaw peoples’ enemies, or what they were capable of.  I need my tribe, he realized. I have to go see my sister… our other family. That might be the only way to find information on getting Tallulah home alive.

            But he couldn’t go yet. His cousins were coming in a few hours, if not earlier. Christian had promised to be home when they arrived, knowing Carter would have questions. He’d been studying foreign relations and war tactics in college. The boy was slowly becoming the man their fathers would have raised him to be, the type of royal a nation would be proud to call their ruler. Christian knew that Nick would be glad to see his brother succeeding today, if he could be around to witness it.

            So Christian showered and changed into a black suit, jacket unbuttoned as he left his corridor, heading for the library. There would be meetings and calls to attend to from his office, but that could wait. He wanted to be normal, if only for a moment. The king had just laid his fingertips on the oak door, beginning to push it opened, when he turned. The footsteps he’d heard behind him stopped as he locked eyes with Eddie, who flinched and lowered his gaze when he realized what he’d done.

            “I’m sorry- I thought you’d still be sleeping. It’s still dark.” Prince Edmund II bit his lip but didn’t flinch as each royal stood before the other. A cup of coffee was held in one hand, and it looked like it had just been poured. Steam curled and waltzed towards the elder prince’s face, begging to be sipped as they surveyed each other’s anxiety and pain. “I wrote my father, but he’s still in Vexeria, and hasn’t sent word on when he’ll be able to return. I wish I had better news for you.”

            Christian’s uncle had been abroad for the past few years, visiting private headquarters in hope of finding any sort of magic or resource that might assist in protecting their heirs and other relatives as the Fiora bloodline continued to grow.  New discoveries had been made, but it was never exactly what the king and his relatives were hoping for.

            And the king wasn’t sure why, but hearing these words sent fury to his heart, spiraling through his veins. Was this what his stepmother had felt all those years ago, when she looked at him? What went through her mind when she broke him, time and time again? Christian flinched as her icy glare appeared in the forefront of his mind, and all of those memories he’d spent his adult years erasing came rushing back, just as clear as when they’d happened.

            Running a hand over his face, the ebony haired man turned to rest his back on the wall. He didn’t raise his gaze to look at the dozens of family portraits on the opposite side, unwilling to have a replay of all of the loss and pain his bloodline had suffered. “Do you expect me to sleep-to get anything resembling rest- at a time like this? My wife is probably going through hell, wherever she is… and I have no idea how to go about getting her back.” Maybe his words came out harsher than he’d meant, and his years with his stepmother were still playing tricks with his head, but surely his cousin would understand. He always did.

            The prince flinched, taking one step back from his younger cousin as he knelt and lowered his gaze to the floor. It looked like he was debating something but thought better of it before speaking again. “No… I’m sorry, your Majesty. That’s not what I meant. Offending you was not my intention.”  He blinked once, twice, before Christian motioned for him to get to his feet. The two men stood side by side in silence until they both looked more uncomfortable than they had been just moments before.

            Christian moved to refill his glass, then thought better of it. If he was going to track his wife down, to find out exactly what had happened to her, his sister and agents would want him to do it with a clear head. He was older now, more mature than last time. This was not a time to forget the pain… not when he had his son to take care of.

The manga industry, especially JUMP, needs to hurry up and do away with weekly scheduling for mangaka. There needs to better regulations put into place for their health and safety because this is pitiful. Two weeks - monthly updates should’ve already been the standard for the manga industry at this point. These money grabbers will only continue to put the lives of these artists at stake for the sake of capitalism unless some serious changes are implemented.
