has anyone gotten the idea that odysseus' storyline in hades 2 is a depiction/exploration of trauma over his SA and how he's blaming himself for things that were out of his control? because that's the impression i'm getting from what i've seen. he talks about "goddesses" as his "greatest weakness" and that "he's not one to say no to them"...
when mel invites him to the bath, he brings up mortals having different standards for intimacy than gods and how it usually has a more romantic/sexual connotation. she then asks if he's uncomfortable and he has a startled reaction and brings up circe and calypso again (but never actually by name)
(this isn't ship/romance bait btw. odysseus knew mel as a kid and they're stated in-game to have a sibling/uncle-niece relationship)
also he grew apart from penelope after his return, but the game makes a point of showing that his love for penelope and telemachus is what drove him on at all so that element of his character isn't brought into question
#i made a post abt it but deleted it bc it was speculating and i don't have the game bc i don't have a pc#but i found more screenshots and now.. i think it's a VERY real possibility they're going in this direction.#circe is in this game also. so i really need to see whether odysseus has any character specific dialogue about her#hard life when you can't even play the game and are hunting down bits of story from other people#hades game tag#hades 2 spoilers#sa mention#hades 2#hades game#odysseus#penelope#i don't have any hard coping shipper brain on or anything but like. just. thinking about where his character can go given what we know#guaranteed penelope will be in this game too from how much she's brought up. we'll probably meet her on the surface#SO ITS LIKE. story wise. are we going to make a wife forgive her husband for cheating on her#or are we going to make a guy realize him being assaulted wasn't the same thing as him cheating on the love of his life#and i am heavily leaning towards the latter.#it's like if he genuinely did cheat on her and they grew apart what direction would his story go in.#how will us as the player help him in the same way we helped achilles/patroclus or orpheus/eurydice

Calypso, baby, im so sorry people can't understand the nuance of your character being a an antagonist and 100% raping someone just because they want to justify liking you, and instead, ignore that men SA exists and try to claim they are cheaters
(and for the record, is canon that Odysseus told Penelope what happened to both Circe and Calypso and she understood and literally said "dont blame yourself for something you were forced to you" so suck it up)
#epic the musical#epic calypso#the odyssey#listen i dont like Calypso as a character but she is AN ANTAGONIST#she did fucked up shit she raped Odysseus#you can still feel compassion towards why she was in the island alone for 7 years#it's like saying Penelope was cheating on Ody for having 108 men in his house and she was very close to marry one of them#Telemachus goes and participate in The Challenge and said that he was going to marry HIS MOM#(even though that last bit was to taunt the suitors so they didn't suspect he was in kahoots with his dad and kill them all)#*alone for 100 years whatever

Colin about to teach Penelope all the ways she can woo men— moreso, woo him specifically. The galaxy brain on this man—
#you're giving her the cheat codes my friend#you're literally one foot on the 'love penelope' train be serious for once#colin: and a man loves it when you already have multiple treats waiting for him when he seeks your time#colin: he also likes it when you sass him all the time and encourage him to publish his writing and make up with his sister and your bestie#penelope: that's specific#penelope featherington#polin#bridgerton#colin bridgerton

I am once again thinking about how odysseus who witnessed the horrors that the captured women went through (one of his main duties in the iliad was taking the women back home and making sure they were as comfortable as possible and safe because he was the only one trusted not to violate them further due to his devotion to penelope. And in the odyssey part of the reason circe sent him to the underworld was so that he'd have to listen to all these women's stories (before he could talk to the prophet) ). Who was one of the few that saw women as people and respected their space and opinions. And was then put in those exact same situations. I don't have the motivation right now to do a full literary analysis of this (I'll site the sources too) but oh man one day I'm going to write a full essay on this.
#The odyssey#iliad#Odysseus#Tw: rape#Tw: sex slaves#Tw: camp slaves#Tw: That one time Calypso kept odysseus as a sex slave for 7 years#circe#Something about the inherent trauma of witnessing how your friends treat women#Watching them keep sex slaves#Then having to bring these girls home hearing about their stories seeing the aftermath#Then living in a situation where you have to let a powerful witch use you as she pleases half in payment for lives/food/medicine#Half because she has the equivalent of a gun to your best friends head and if you don't keep her happy then youre all dead#And then that witch sends you on a quest to the underworld where granted you'll benefit too but first#You have to listen to every single captured women from the Trojan war that you didn't Shepard home tell you their stories#Tell you that you're a horrible person while you are living in a disturbingly similar situation#And then later finding yourself trapped as a sex slave for seven years to an immortal nymph#And then being labeled as a horrible cheater for the rest of history#And none of this well historically everybody cheated or it's up to interpretation bullshit#Because it fucking isn't and granted a lot of abridged versions skip this shit#But if you read the full original stories and still think odysseus cheated then you just have an issue with men being victims#Or weren't paying attention i guess#Where's that meme where's it like the text was up to interpretation cut to the text where it very bluntly states what's happening#And I'm not saying odysseus was a good person or that he didn't have slaves because he did. And he wasnt#But first off nobody deserves to suffer that violation#Second they weren't sex slaves they were all nurses/maids/spys and I'm not getting into the ancient culture slavery issues rn#Third there's a lot you can pick to hate odysseus for but cheating/disrespecting women wasn't one of them#They literally invented a new word to describe his and penelopes love and it means to be so in love that you think the exact same way#Also forcing this narrative of odysseus cheating and penelope leaving to be a single girl boss is#Just the fake feminist mindset that stay at home moms are weak and wrong and live awful lives

Regarding Lady Whistendown's reveal, I really hope that Colin decides to stay and listen to Penelope's reasoning.
I feel like him just deciding to stay would make a difference, after everything since last season Pen has gone from abandonment to abandonment, starting with
Eloise, although she had her reasons, never decided to listen to Penelope and acted impulsively.
2. Lord Debling, who in the end was the one who broke up the courtship with Penelope when he noticed her closeness to Colin.
3. From her own mother, Portia, after she finds out about the end of Lord Debling's courtship, we see how Penelope feels hurt as they do not care about her feelings.
So I feel like Colin must make a difference, he could get angry, yell, cry, get frustrated but as long as he ended up deciding to stay and listen, really listen, to Pen's reasoning, I feel like it would perfectly define the close relationship between the two.
Plus, I think it would be the perfect scenario to incorporate the "Stay, stay, stay" quote from the book, which would also happen in a fight at the engagement dance.
#polin#bridgerton#penelope featherington#colin bridgerton#bridgerton season 3#I just can't see where those cheating rumours even make Sense#Colin loved Pen AND he wants to understand her#He's an emotional person AND even tho we know he would be hurt I dont think it would even cross his head abandoning her#Or At least I hope the shows writters know him as much as I know him

I cannot stop thinking about Odysseus singing "There Are Other Ways" every time he has a slight inconvenience.
But only towards men.
Posideon tries to drown him? Seduce him.
Zeus tries being Zeus? Make him be even more Zeus. Seduce him.
A petty argument going on in the crew? Seduce them.

It's such whiplash from going from my corner of tumblr to tiktok when it comes to odysseus
Like here (in my corner idk about the rest) its pretty common knowledge that what happened to odysseus was sa, and most of the stuff abiut him are based off of the Iliad or Odyssey (or epic) and yk people know what they're talking about
And then
Then I go tiktok and it's all "odysseus is cheating scum! Circe, Calypso, and Penelope deserved better! He did them dirty! And achilles and patroclus! Terrible person! Bad! They're the victims!"
Which wild take but ok
#like circe i can see the confusion#but if you look into it (which these peoppe clearly did not its just a game of telephone) its clearly not him willingly cheating#like if he wanted his men back and yk not die it was kinda his only option#(side not i was reading this part in the Odyssey and the way circe just says “oh its you igwe need to fuck now Hermes told me so”)#BUT CALYPSO???#how#read a single line from this part of the book#it goes on and on how he doesnt want to#“one unwilling and the other way too willing”#A DIRECT QUOTE#and him crying on the beach everyday?#what from all that makes you think he wants to be thete#let alone calypso being the victim#and wdym penelope deserves better?? she has what she wants ODYSSEUS#penelope wants odysseus#they have a healthy marriage#wtf are you guys on about#i mean if you look at the caption itd be “just finished circe” or smth like that#so#not that surprising#anti tsoa#anti circe#anti madeline miller#the odyssey#odysseus#penelope#penelope of ithaca#circe#calypso

I'm glad the Homer Fandom is finally starting to realise Calypso fuckin' SUCKED because back in my twitter days I saw some horrendous takes about her and Odysseus' relationship. From actual classicists nonetheless. With degrees and everything.
#'odysseus sucks bc he's not really loyal to penelope he cheated on her with calypso for 7 years' she rapes him. calypso rapes odysseus#what do you call it when you're kept in one place and in a romantic/sexual relationship through magic & goddess-power#when it's not you who decides but her#thank you epic the musical for setting this straight because DAMN yall wont shit-talk my boy on my watch#epic the musical#the wisdom saga#tw rape

sending childe—a notoriously impatient man—on an impossible scavenger hunt as a way to stave off his advances (since he won’t take “no” for an answer). you tell him that if he can complete it within a day’s time, he can court you.
#a la leslie knope#this is so funny to me#getting zhongli’s help.............. i feel like he would know old riddles that are hard to solve#anyway at first childe thinks he’s got it in the bag like the cocky shit he is#but then he gets a wakeup call#and then he panics#and then he starts hacking and slashing his way through#prob finds a shortcut (like ben lmao) and finishes by the skin of his teeth#unfortunately for you#you’re like penelope (the odyssey) except you’re keeping suitors away just because you don’t want them.#not because you’re waiting for your lying cheating bastard husband#childe <3

when you realise that both odysseus and medea are manipulating, deceiving characters who are way too smart for their own good but are overcome by anger, pride and jealousy which leads them to commit horrendous acts of violence. and then odysseus is the hero and medea is the bitch
#ok there IS a difference#there are multiple differences#medea is expected to tolerate jasons cheating. she doesnt and therefore challenges expectations set on women#odysseus goes on a wild killing rampage murdering and executing all the suitors and penelopes maids#medea kills her own children which i will say is on another level#but they both commit multiple murders#odysseus is a hero. he fought at troy (where he slaughtered ppl in a temple. yay) and hes a greek king#medea is a priestess of hecate and from kolchis so basically from the other end of the world (to the greeks)#so shes not only a weird woman shes also not entirely human aand “barbaric“#but i would argue that both commit revenge out of anger pride and jealousy#only that defines the image we have of medea (ignoring how she helped jason on multiple adventures) as a jealous murderous witch#but it doesnt impact the image we have of odysseus as a wily hero#yeah welcome to my 5. pk#5. pk#and dont even get me STARTED on lady macbeth#in the wise words of gerard way “and so he gets to die a saint but she will always be the whore“#greek mythology#medea#odysseus

AU where Penelope has been hooking up with Anastacius, Claude and Diana and she is genuinely not aware she has been cheating on her partner the whole time because all blonde people look the same to her
#Anastacius and Claude hated each other so much that they were never seen in the same room together#she didn`t even know he had a brother#imagine her reaction when she wakes up after the party to Claude accusing her of cheating on him#*to Anastacius turned*#´´why am I hallucinating a less attractive version of yourself that is accusing me of cheating on you with your nonexistent brother?´´#also imagine Claude only starting to work out bc Penelope kept comparing him to Diana who had the body of a greek god#thanks to her intense dance training routine#each brother thought Penelope was preferring the other when in reality Penelope has been preferring the Siodonian beauty over them#wmmap#who made me a princess#sbapod#suddenly became a princess one day#penelope judith#anelope#clauelope#dialope#concepts

Studying for my Greek myth class, studying Odysseus's travel, studying how Odysseus's only goal was to come back to Penelope, studying how he had so many occasions to forget, studying how he had so many places he could've stayed forever, studying how he had nymphs and sorceresses but he chose the human, studying how he cried while remembering the Troyan war, studying...
#i'm actually insane about this myth#and if one person tells me “yes but he cheated” I'm gonna explode them with my mind#I love this myth so much#odysseus#I love Penelope#greek mythology

God, I am trying so hard to enjoy EPIC the musical cos it objectively slaps, but having read Circe by Madeleine Miller before anything else, I will be an odysseus hater until the day I die.
#like I know there’s different versions of the story#but I can’t control the rage I feel towards this fictional man#like the new Hera song about never having cheated and everyone saying he’s so whipped for Penelope makes me irrationally angry#please don’t kill me#circe madeline miller#circe goddess#epic the circe saga#epic the musical#epic odysseus#epic the troy saga#odysseus#greek mythology
