I was in a tiktok comment section like "l love Odysseus sm l wanna eat and gobble him up" and this mf comes out of nowhere like "B-b-b-b-but! But he's a narcissistic egoistic war criminal adulterer! " Like first of all; no he isn't read that book again, and second; IDC HOMIE he can commit manslaughter and say he was feeling a little silly and l will STILL defend and love him till the end, period. I love my crime lovin dilf ok? Give me a break 🙄

has anyone gotten the idea that odysseus' storyline in hades 2 is a depiction/exploration of trauma over his SA and how he's blaming himself for things that were out of his control? because that's the impression i'm getting from what i've seen. he talks about "goddesses" as his "greatest weakness" and that "he's not one to say no to them"...

when mel invites him to the bath, he brings up mortals having different standards for intimacy than gods and how it usually has a more romantic/sexual connotation. she then asks if he's uncomfortable and he has a startled reaction and brings up circe and calypso again (but never actually by name)
Tumblr media
(this isn't ship/romance bait btw. odysseus knew mel as a kid and they're stated in-game to have a sibling/uncle-niece relationship)
also he grew apart from penelope after his return, but the game makes a point of showing that his love for penelope and telemachus is what drove him on at all so that element of his character isn't brought into question

Calypso, baby, im so sorry people can't understand the nuance of your character being a an antagonist and 100% raping someone just because they want to justify liking you, and instead, ignore that men SA exists and try to claim they are cheaters
(and for the record, is canon that Odysseus told Penelope what happened to both Circe and Calypso and she understood and literally said "dont blame yourself for something you were forced to you" so suck it up)

I am once again thinking about how odysseus who witnessed the horrors that the captured women went through (one of his main duties in the iliad was taking the women back home and making sure they were as comfortable as possible and safe because he was the only one trusted not to violate them further due to his devotion to penelope. And in the odyssey part of the reason circe sent him to the underworld was so that he'd have to listen to all these women's stories (before he could talk to the prophet) ). Who was one of the few that saw women as people and respected their space and opinions. And was then put in those exact same situations. I don't have the motivation right now to do a full literary analysis of this (I'll site the sources too) but oh man one day I'm going to write a full essay on this.
#The odyssey#iliad#Odysseus#Tw: rape#Tw: sex slaves#Tw: camp slaves#Tw: That one time Calypso kept odysseus as a sex slave for 7 years#circe#Something about the inherent trauma of witnessing how your friends treat women#Watching them keep sex slaves#Then having to bring these girls home hearing about their stories seeing the aftermath#Then living in a situation where you have to let a powerful witch use you as she pleases half in payment for lives/food/medicine#Half because she has the equivalent of a gun to your best friends head and if you don't keep her happy then youre all dead#And then that witch sends you on a quest to the underworld where granted you'll benefit too but first#You have to listen to every single captured women from the Trojan war that you didn't Shepard home tell you their stories#Tell you that you're a horrible person while you are living in a disturbingly similar situation#And then later finding yourself trapped as a sex slave for seven years to an immortal nymph#And then being labeled as a horrible cheater for the rest of history#And none of this well historically everybody cheated or it's up to interpretation bullshit#Because it fucking isn't and granted a lot of abridged versions skip this shit#But if you read the full original stories and still think odysseus cheated then you just have an issue with men being victims#Or weren't paying attention i guess#Where's that meme where's it like the text was up to interpretation cut to the text where it very bluntly states what's happening#And I'm not saying odysseus was a good person or that he didn't have slaves because he did. And he wasnt#But first off nobody deserves to suffer that violation#Second they weren't sex slaves they were all nurses/maids/spys and I'm not getting into the ancient culture slavery issues rn#Third there's a lot you can pick to hate odysseus for but cheating/disrespecting women wasn't one of them#They literally invented a new word to describe his and penelopes love and it means to be so in love that you think the exact same way#Also forcing this narrative of odysseus cheating and penelope leaving to be a single girl boss is#Just the fake feminist mindset that stay at home moms are weak and wrong and live awful lives

Regarding Lady Whistendown's reveal, I really hope that Colin decides to stay and listen to Penelope's reasoning.
I feel like him just deciding to stay would make a difference, after everything since last season Pen has gone from abandonment to abandonment, starting with
Eloise, although she had her reasons, never decided to listen to Penelope and acted impulsively.
2. Lord Debling, who in the end was the one who broke up the courtship with Penelope when he noticed her closeness to Colin.
3. From her own mother, Portia, after she finds out about the end of Lord Debling's courtship, we see how Penelope feels hurt as they do not care about her feelings.
So I feel like Colin must make a difference, he could get angry, yell, cry, get frustrated but as long as he ended up deciding to stay and listen, really listen, to Pen's reasoning, I feel like it would perfectly define the close relationship between the two.
Plus, I think it would be the perfect scenario to incorporate the "Stay, stay, stay" quote from the book, which would also happen in a fight at the engagement dance.

I cannot stop thinking about Odysseus singing "There Are Other Ways" every time he has a slight inconvenience.
But only towards men.
Posideon tries to drown him? Seduce him.
Zeus tries being Zeus? Make him be even more Zeus. Seduce him.
A petty argument going on in the crew? Seduce them.

It's such whiplash from going from my corner of tumblr to tiktok when it comes to odysseus
Like here (in my corner idk about the rest) its pretty common knowledge that what happened to odysseus was sa, and most of the stuff abiut him are based off of the Iliad or Odyssey (or epic) and yk people know what they're talking about
And then
Then I go tiktok and it's all "odysseus is cheating scum! Circe, Calypso, and Penelope deserved better! He did them dirty! And achilles and patroclus! Terrible person! Bad! They're the victims!"
Which wild take but ok

I'm glad the Homer Fandom is finally starting to realise Calypso fuckin' SUCKED because back in my twitter days I saw some horrendous takes about her and Odysseus' relationship. From actual classicists nonetheless. With degrees and everything.

sending childe—a notoriously impatient man—on an impossible scavenger hunt as a way to stave off his advances (since he won’t take “no” for an answer). you tell him that if he can complete it within a day’s time, he can court you.

when you realise that both odysseus and medea are manipulating, deceiving characters who are way too smart for their own good but are overcome by anger, pride and jealousy which leads them to commit horrendous acts of violence. and then odysseus is the hero and medea is the bitch

Studying for my Greek myth class, studying Odysseus's travel, studying how Odysseus's only goal was to come back to Penelope, studying how he had so many occasions to forget, studying how he had so many places he could've stayed forever, studying how he had nymphs and sorceresses but he chose the human, studying how he cried while remembering the Troyan war, studying...

God, I am trying so hard to enjoy EPIC the musical cos it objectively slaps, but having read Circe by Madeleine Miller before anything else, I will be an odysseus hater until the day I die.
