Isn't this a microaggression?
Like, yeah, what you're saying is right, and people need to learn when not to double-down and get super-defensive, but that applies to everyone. European, Asian, African, whatever. Not just a single group or race does this.
some of yall are white and you have to swallow your shame and accept you are white and sometimes you will do microagressions and it's best to just listen to other voices then double down on it or get super defensive about it.
#i may be misinterpreting this#that's my bad#if i am#but criticism and phrases like this tends to lead to... polarization?#and extremism?#i don't know if those are the right words#but they are the ones i think suit the message i intend to say

Fake News and Propaganda in Social Media Activism
The power of social media is a tool for activism and protest and is powerful which can not be overstated. While these platforms have been instrumental in rallying support and giving a voice to the marginalized, they've also become breeding grounds for fake news and propaganda. In this blog post, we'll delve into the muddled world of disinformation and its profound impact on today's activism. Fake news and propaganda can both aid and hinder activist movements. Here are 3 examples/cases that happened during the height of COVID-19. The 5G-COVID-19 Conspiracy Theory : During the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, a baseless theory emerged connecting 5G technology to the virus. This false narrative rapidly spread on social media, diverting attention from genuine concerns and diverting resources to debunk the claim.
Anti-Lockdown Protests : Some anti-lockdown protests were organized and amplified on social media with misleading information, leading to public gatherings that may have contributed to the virus's spread. This demonstrates the potential real-world consequences of disinformation.
"Chinese Virus" and Political Discourse : Former President Trump's use of the term "Chinese virus" on social media exemplifies how political figures can exploit the medium to politicize health issues, deepening societal divisions and potentially inciting real-world actions.
What are the causes of widespread disinformation:
1. Social media algorithms often create echo chambers, reinforcing users' existing beliefs and making it easier for fake news to spread among like-minded groups.
2. People tend to favor information that confirms their beliefs, making it easier for disinformation to gain traction.
3. Social media platforms' algorithms can unintentionally amplify sensational or false information, increasing their reach.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
But isn't this just the nature of free expression?
Some argue that attempting to curb disinformation is a slippery slope that could lead to censorship and restrict free speech. Some may suggest that it's not the role of governments or tech companies to decide what is true or false.
While the concern for free speech is valid, it's important to clarify that countering disinformation doesn't necessarily mean stifling free expression. It's about promoting responsible and ethical use of social media platforms. Fact-checking, media literacy, and responsible information sharing are mechanisms that empower individuals to make informed choices. The goal isn't censorship but rather equipping digital citizens with the tools to critically assess the information they encounter, thus preserving the integrity of public discourse.
While these endeavors to counter fake news are essential, they can provide additional visibility to the disinformation. For instance, a well-intentioned fact-checking article might include keywords or phrases from the original false story, making it more discoverable through search engines. In other cases, confronting disinformation in public debates can lead to polarization and the 'backfire effect,' where people become more entrenched in their beliefs. Consider a situation where activists aim to expose a conspiracy theory. They invest time in creating well-researched content, engaging with users, and promoting responsible use of social media. However, in the process, they may inadvertently bring more attention to the very conspiracy theory they intend to debunk. This way it can lead to more people stumbling upon the false narrative and potentially embracing it (visibility). In essence, the disinformation gains an extended life through counter-disinformation efforts. The remedy to this situation is time and education, false narratives might be diminished over time.
Balancing the need to counter disinformation with respect for free speech is a complex challenge. Governments and social media platforms face ethical and regulatory dilemmas in addressing this issue.
In a world where information is weaponized, we must continually refine our methods, seeking innovative ways to champion the truth and foster positive change rather than inadvertently perpetuating evil.

Reasons why John Clarke and Eric Sweet might have...mystical connections
I’ve been thinking about this for a while and recently had a brief discussion with @houseofanubis-headcanon and now that I’ve discussed with someone who shares or at least conceptualizes the same headcanon I figured I might as well go for it
So. John Clarke and Eric Sweet. I have so many headcanons for these two it’s actually kind of weird.
Much has been speculated about these two and I’m in the category that believes they were best friends during school and that it was Eric who dared John to steal the gem. I also believe there could be something more to them. perhaps they are one of the missing pairs of Paragons and Osirions between Sarah and Nina. John is a chosen one and Eric is an Osirion. Many have theorized that since C1s and Osirions are polar opposites like Vicky Sr. said that gender must play a role in it. One female, one male. I don’t dislike this theory but I also don’t necessarily support it. Gender is subjective and I feel iffy supporting this theory.
More to my theory is that from the examples we’ve been given bad things tend to happen with the C1 and Osirion. Sarah and Rufus had that...whatever they had and Rufus went ballistic. Nina and Eddie were separated (whether the “we have to be apart” thing is true or not this applies) and probably didn’t contact each other much at all after school. so it’s logical to assume the same thing happened to John and Eric.
But what happened? I’m of the opinion that John did more to his family than just leave, whether that was being an alcoholic child beater, or emotionally distant and manipulative father figure. I believe as his relationship with Eric began to crumble so did his relationship with his family. But let's go back and determine why his relationship with his mate went downhill? It’s widely accepted that Eric dared John to steal the gem and I think that was the catalyst of this chain of events. In Patricia’s words, C1s are “mystical champions of good.” Stealing a gem is not good. I believe that by doing this, John pissed off the gods, particularly Anubis who gave the C1s their powers in the first place. thus these thirty years of “bad luck” or however you want to phrase it was put into place. John’s life began to crumble, and his relationship with his “other half” became tense. Then the boys went on to university where John met Joan, who was, to say the least, a bad influence. They had this sexual tension going on and they acted on it, getting married while Eric remained single. NOTE: I’m also in favor of the theory that Eddie and Ben are half brothers and that would still fit within this one. but what’s key is that Eric is single and alone while John and Joan move in and begin their life together. Joan probably didn’t want kids, while John did, so when Jerome was born Joan probably became very dissatisfied with her life and took it out on Jerome and John. John followed her lead because she had been rubbing off on him. Eric dislikes this “new John” and began to openly criticize him, making their relationship tenser. The Clarke household expanded with Poppy and was growing more toxic by the day and Eric, had his suspicions, reporting his best friend to the police. The state did their investigation but found nothing, Afterall, Poppy was infant, Jerome wouldn’t say much and John and Joan were brilliant liars. This action, however permanently severed John and Eric’s relationship, which took a toll on them both. John was angry and Eric but after a few months realized that he was right and that ever since the gem he had slowly turned into a monster. still holding Eric responsible for the gem incident, John packed his bags in a rage, and hoping to give his children a better life without him in it left in the middle of the night.
The rest of the series happens as cannon.
This may seem like a strange theory but it makes an awful lot of sense when you think about it. It would give Eric a more intimate knowledge of the Osirion and explains a bit more why he was so reluctant to bring Eddie to Anubis house and get him involved. It’s also pretty fun to theorize and in my opinion, adds some spice to the original story,
But, wait! There’s more: The math.
Every 25 years, a chosen one is born and we know from the matching puzzle pieces that Nina was born in 1995, Sarah in 1915. There is room for not just one, but two more pairs of chosen ones and Osirions. Furthermore, the math fits nicely with this theory. Mara and Poppy discovered on the school archive that Eric and John graduated in 1979. But...you’re probably thinking right now, 1979 minus 16 (graduation in England happens at 16) is 1963, not 1965, one of the years a chosen one could have been born. However, Amun seems to have a lot of smart, and or rich people in their program. So if Eric and John were smart enough to go to this school maybe they were smart enough to skip two years. thus, graduating in 1979 but being born in 1965. thus, it is completely logical that these two could have been a Chosen One and Osirion respectively.
(by the way, this is unedited so no promises on its quality)

The Female Game: An Analysis of the Stormborn Dragon
SPOILER warning for Season 8, Episode 1-3 and more of a SPOILER WATCH for Season 8, Episode 4 (no plot related details, but . . . a teaspoon of character and tone vibes from the episode).
Now I know we are still wrapping our heads around what we witnessed last night on Game of Thrones. But there was one discussion that caught my attention – Daenerys character development (or lack thereof) and how women are represented on the show:
i hate that ambition in women is always used as a bad trait.
All her hard work and talk of breaking the wheel for nothing. All this talk of her being different and just and “see you for who you are” for absolutely nothing.
They should rename season 8 to “the tale of how we trashed a character’s development, made her an army of haters, just so we could make Jon Snow a hero: A study on Daenerys Targaryen.”
they really are setting up “Mad Queen” Dany and I’ll be honest, I don’t blame her at this point.
If a man acted that way it would be perfectly fine.
every single woman on game of thrones deserves better.
Ever since Game of Thrones graced the stage seven years ago, a number of fans, critics and activists have voiced concerns about the way the show portrays violence (especially sexual violence) towards female characters. However, those concerns have slowly evolved into larger conversations about the way these heroines are portrayed in comparison to power. Westeros – and most of the known world in the show – are under a patriarchal system. Men have inheritance rights, new wives join their husbands’ families and male children are given precedent over their older sisters and female relations in the line of succession (they call this primogeniture). Attempts at female rule are rare and even more rarely achieved without a healthy dose of fire and blood (search The Princess and the Queen on YouTube for more context and a juicy history lesson!).
Suspicion and hesitancy towards female rule is common in our real world (i.e. 2016 election) and is, unfortunately, not a new phenomenon. Prominent theologian, wrote in his 1558 piece, The First Blast of the Trumpet Against the Monstruous Regiment of Women, that, “To promote a woman to beare rule, superioritie, dominion or empire aboue any realme, nation, or citie, is repugnant to nature, contumelie to God, a thing most contrarious to his reueled will and approued ordinance, and finallie it is the subuersion of good order, of all equitie and iustice”(Knox). Across Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Islam, Christianity, and Judaism there exist exclusionary mindsets in regards to women in power dating back to antiquity. However, there are also examples of women overcoming the restrictions and barriers of their societies, such as the prominence and elevation of women within certain patriarchal systems (including Egypt, the Tang Dynasty of China, the Mongolian Empire and beyond) . Even today, within many Native American and West African communities, femaleness is connected to spiritualism – unseen forces are often defined as female, such as goddesses and masked spirits, and are often interpreted by priestesses, prophetesses, healers, fortune tellers, and female shamans. However, the dominant culture that defines our 21st century world is, largely, patriarchal and continues to prosper through the oppression of women – and, to an extent, men.
Power is power – and there is power in subjugation.
(Sidney Note: The glass ceiling metaphor should be viewed with some context – as should my statement above ^^ While times have changed and we now have female executives, college presidents, directors, governors, ambassadors and presidential candidates there are still inequities that exist. The metaphor implies that women and men have equal access to entry- and mid-level positions (Eagly and Carli). They do not. Rather than a ceiling to break through, women often have to struggle through a labyrinth, a maze filled with dead ends, false leads and towering walls. The labyrinth is even more suffocating for minority and marginalized women.
But back to the Game of Thrones universe . . . While most of the main characters have divided the fan base at some point in time (remember how we used to hate Cersei and then we felt bad and now . . . we kind of hate her again?) the discourse around Daenerys has been relatively consistent. While some see the Dragon Queen as an entitled, power-hungry tyrant slowly turning into the Mad Queen, others view her in a more sympathetic light. Daenerys – like many women – exist within a labyrinth. At the end is the Iron Throne. But the roads, for much of her life, were determined for her. Her (thankfully) deceased brother Viserys sold her in exchange for military support. Even after his golden death, Dany was still trapped in the maze, struggling to navigate the seemingly endless corridors. She has been raped, abandoned, deceived and . . . perhaps, most damning of all, she has been wrong.
Dany has made some questionable choices throughout her reign and while this is nothing new when it comes to GOT characters, what is new is that she is in a position of considerable power. Besides Cersei and, at one time, Grandma Olenna, Daenerys is one of the most powerful women in the series. Her dragons carry the weight of nuclear weapons and, after taking several fiery walks, hatching (or incubating) three ancient creatures an liberating a city from the chains of slavery . . . well, you can see why she thinks her destiny is to sit upon the Iron Throne.
Recently, the discourse about the portrayal of women in cinema has lit a fuse within the feminist movement. While I will say that some people tend to over analyze the actions of every character - relating them back to contemporary issues, it’s no state secret that female characters are often held to a very unhealthy set of standards:
Be strong, but not emasculating.
Be desirable, but not whorish.
Be charming, but not condescending.
Be ambitious, but not too ambitious.
The criticism about her representation in the show I think comes from a place of genuine concern. These fans want her to succeed because, seven hells, this woman has been through A LOT. And while there is a dose of sexism in the discourse, I do think that some of the backlash towards the show and creative team is unwarranted.
Daenerys Stormborn is NOT the protagonist in the traditional sense. She is a principle character who is heavily featured in both the books and Martin’s 5 novels. If you look at the charts below, people (who are more tech savvy than me) created comparison charts to help determine principle characters:
You may not like that Jon is painted as the hero or that Tyrion is featured prominently, but EVERY character has faced failures and loss in this series.
The freedom to lead is not freedom from failure.
No character is entirely good or entirely bad – Dany included. From white savior to female icon, Daenerys has been a polarizing character since season 1. She has made choices that, even when justifiable, were not . . . the most diplomatic solutions. She has a temper. She can be impulsive. But she is also affectionate with her friends. She is nurturing towards her dragons (in the books, her ancestors used whips to direct their dragons). She is also a queen . . . living in a patriarchal system that Aegon Targaryen established almost 300 years prior. She is single handedly trying to undo 300 years of patriarchal feudalism. That’s a pretty ambitious goal!
While Westerosi politics are similar to our own, they do not have cemented democratic institutions. The Night’s Watch is probably the closest example we have of a meritocracy (rule by merit or ability). The majority of the kingdom falls under the rule of one monarch who distributes semiautonomous authority through bonds of vassalage.
Change requires sacrifice . . . and compromise.
When was the last time you saw a high fantasy where, at one point, there were 5 women in positions of power? The closest moment in European history where that was a thing was when Catherine the Great of Russia, Madame de Pompadour, the Mistress of the King of France, and Empress Maria Theresa of the Holy Roman Empire combined their forces to fight against Fredrick II of Prussia during the 7 Years War (Fred was kinda a misogynist and coined the phrase The League of the Three Petticoats to describe the three women). Even in early English history, women who fought for power, like Isabella of France and Margaret of Anjou, were dubbed as she-wolves or reckless, power-hungry queens. Hmmm . . . sound familiar?
Now Dany does have a temper. But so did Robert Baratheon. She can be impulsive. She has a sense of entitlement, as do most monarchs and presidents. She is compassionate, loyal to her friends and nurturing towards her dragons (in the books, her ancestors used whips to direct their dragons). She likes to be in control, but she is also willing to listen to others. But she does get angry and she does have insecurities. She is also a human and – like most humans – she is a bundle of idiosyncrasies, conflicting ideas, blinding anxieties and soaring dreams.
Are there problems with the series? Yes.
Have female (and male) characters been portrayed in ways that are questionable? Yeah.
Would a more socially conscious director craft a different narrative or create a more dynamic story? Maybe.
Are you still gonna watch the next episode this Sunday? Most likely.
If you look for flaws, you will find flaws – because, this story was not created by you. So write your own story, whip up a fanfic or make a headcannon!
And besides, there are plenty of real world issues surrounding women that you can (and should) put your energy towards.

Hey, about the sun moon combo descriptions, would you mind doing a description on scorpio sun pisces moon? Thank you💫
Hey there! 💕 Aaaah I love this one !! 💕
[Below Cut: Scorpio Sun - Pisces Moon 🌌]
THE strongest creative minds and imaginations
And also One of the NICEST person you will ever meet
I think I once described these people as like ‘fairy tale’ come to life and i still think it’s true
Has the cutest smile, they’re altruistic at heart and that’s why they’re usually adored by people around them
They are so open-minded?? Like one of the friends who just wants the best for everyone (even tho they have problems themselves and may have a hard time dealing with it, confronting it instead of cutting it out/escaping away from it as a coping mechanism)
Likes anything art, has big dreams when they were a kid (also: role-playing can spark their interest in theatre/drama)
When they’re interested in the ‘concept’ of something they do research/starts to get deeper into it:
If it’s ‘stars’ they get space-documentaries/looks at nasa sites. If it’s ‘animals’ (like ‘polar bears’) they start getting involved with or ‘saving-the-animals’ stuff.
They find out ‘facts’ about the subject and share it with their friends. They’re concerned with like, discourse/discussions around the subject (newer discovery/research etc.)
Also the way that they ‘involve’ themselves into the subject isn’t so ‘narrow’ --- they like the thing about stars, but did you hear the things about our galaxy as well?
They have a broader range of interests because they’re empathetic when relating/understanding/learning about the subjects
They like to feel personally connected, so they always try to find the good in things/something precious in it that appeals to them emotionally (or imaginatively)--- and use that to expand their focus.
Mayhaps they are scared to be in a relationship/commitment sometimes and has a hard time dealing saying ‘no’ to people----it’s mostly to do with having high ideals, and not being able to cope physically with actual real intimacy between people. So they may need time to test the waters or adjust. Have some autonomy to themselves/know themselves better.
They always have this deep soulful connection to waters-- being in waters, thinking about water, having some waters near by. They’re attracted to symbolisms or representations of water, because they unconsciously associate it back to themselves.
ANYTHING artsy -- if these people paints, they’re the type of people who just genuinely enjoy the process. The MOST patient/concentrated when it comes to art, they just feel so cathartic doing it
They’re highly involved with spiritual practices/ideas (that doesn’t mean necessarily being religious)-- the idea that there’s ‘more’ in this world than what we see, what we get in the ‘material’ fascinates them.
It’s like a gate-way to ‘space’ in a way? An area that’s left unexplored and just waiting to be discovered. An area in which ‘space’ can be made for them, accommodate them. Maybe it could become a ‘space’ they will eventually ‘belong/find something valuable to them there’
Wants and likes the idea of unconditional love-- mostly because, they are rather dedicated and slow-moving people. The idea that the others will wait, be patient and understanding towards them will appeals to them. They need warmth and nurturing to grow, and being in an environment where other makes space/time for them and give them patience/understanding---they grow fond and soft in it.
The idea/lesson with Scorpio/Pisces however, is that they may be a little too into luxuriating and finding these spaces. These people may be tilted too much into Pisces Moon--- making them find hardship in the world easily, find flaws easily, bury themselves in emotional hurt and self-problems because of it.
Most of the time it’s self-image or social expectations. They feel bad about themselves and are constantly aware of their own flaws.
No matter how much others try to explain to them how differently they are for others/socially (and that ‘its ok to be different’)--- how valuable, precious and rare they are socially (you can never find others like them). These people have a hard time ‘feeling’ like they’re worth something/feel grounded in those Truths.
Even though they try so hard to see things from other people’s perspective (like they trust them, it makes sense. A part of their intuition is telling them that it’s ‘truthful’)-- but that doesn’t necessarily mean they won’t feel what they feel.
They may sometimes feel like others don’t feel the same problems as they do, because most of the time they ‘feel’ their flaws ‘consciously’. It’s a feeling where you’re constantly aware of your faults, and you emotionally feel insecure/down about it (don’t want to get judged, criticized. Fearful of it. Just wants to please/up-lift other people)
They’re prone to try being rational, try to be ‘logical’ and ‘pragmatic’ and all that. But they can’t help feeling emotionally helpless sometimes, about something even though they try to stay strong in (they compare themselves to other people, friends around them who aren’t as emotional and try to incorporate that in somewhat)
See the thing here is that they see their emotionality as a flaw. Scorpio natives in general, may be much more in touch with their Pisces Moon sides that they know it’s overwhelming their Scorpio. It leads to the same problem, a half sense of acknowledgement and putting themselves down.
They feel like ‘people’ would describe them as ‘living in the dream world’ more than the real world because of their ideals/wants in life. They have to be aware that they are often their own worst critic.
Because they’re an empathetic learner-- the slightest off-hand wording from someone else (or like silence, frustrations/context) they care about, can sometimes think it’s something else (from their understanding/context)
They pride themselves in their empathy but that is also the part they use to hurt themselves with, the imagination and idealism isn’t a fault. What you think about yourself isn’t at fault. You don’t have to cut back on yourself or try to please others around you--- you just have to get a stronger sense of independence/autonomy.
It’s really not a big thing at all. Most of you are already thinking about so many explanations/ideas on your own about what that means, what you need to do, what it could imply.
Stop thinking about those, what matters is that you take it as a moment to find your independence. Because you’re absorption/receptive to your environment--- being in one where you don’t have families/friends with you will truly help you.
A place where it’s just you, and a new chapter. I know it sounds dramatic/drastic, but you tend to cling onto the past, to people you know or find comfort in and your mind/fondness always go back to them.
Because of this you’ll find yourself using your Scorpio side more-- your adaptability becomes a survival skills, you use your head instead of your heart to connect to others. You watch out for yourself, because nobody else you may know/feel close to is there to do it for you.
This is you finding balance. This is you figuring out who you are independent of your family or friends or relationship with anyone else. You come back to earth naturally, when you’re in an environment that’s new and requires you to respond to it. Make new connections, do certain things.
You don’t have to change who you are, what matters most is that you realize it’s a natural and normal, to feel natural in those positions. Sure, you still don’t like/feel intimidated by forceful/powerful people. But you have to adapt now, you can choose to not engage/be close to those people (or find some commonality in them/be friends with them)
This is a perfectly normal progression of development everyone goes through. When you adjust and get into this progression, you will continue with it. Until you’re ready to change, adapt, start anew and go through it again.
(I’m not worried about these people ‘changing’ often, mostly because they’re suuuuuper slow moving so they have a harder time letting go than switching sides. Just make sure to realize when you should do it, when it feels like you gotta get a move on.
Because without that --- you’ll find yourself making ‘habits’ of behaviors for yourself in each phrase that ‘defines’ you who are until you don’t know how to ‘start’ anew again)
Last ending note on these placements: you always try to be yourself, but may find yourself feeling ‘not you’ or think you’re playing ‘roles’ to empathize with those around you. Make sure to realize that it’s not that, it’s just that you are inherently kind, and being ‘kind’ is guiding your action.
You don’t impose yourself, and you’d hate to feel like you did. But it makes you less assertive, less in control of environments/social/context around you. You lose more opportunity because of it.
You may withdraw too much into yourself, because you feel the need to do some soul-searching/self-contemplation. But make sure you get back and find friends who could be with you during those times, one-on-one are better than social because that may tend to freak you out if it’s sudden (you don’t feel ready/prepared to ‘face’ people sometimes)
I hope you like it 💕💕 Thank u for sending it in! 💕

The Twelve Zodiac Signs
Life on Earth is incredibly diverse. However, every species under the Sun contains DNA – which act as instructions as to how the individual should be developed, starting from the embryonic stage, continuing until death. DNA is responsible for the growth and development of our physical bodies, and so much more.
DNA, while producing vast differences from organism to organism, and species to species, is composed from the altering sequences of four nucleotides.
Metaphorically, the Zodiac Signs can be similarly – they’re all different and unique, but are composed of various combinations of Modality, Triplicity, Duality, and Polarity.
(Not talking about Sun Signs, or individuals born under them. Simply talking about what the 12 Zodiac Signs represent in essence.)
Categories
Modalities
Also called “quadruplicates” because each group contains four signs.

Different Astrologers refer to the two sides as Masculine/Feminine, Assertive/Passive, Positive/Negative, Yin/Yang, Introverted/Extroverted, etc, but regardless of the name, the implications are the same.
Represent how the signs express themselves, and whether they tend to focus on the internal or external world.
Masculine
Impulsive, Outgoing
Focused on the external
Feminine
Premedative, Reserved
Focused on the internal

Just What the Doctor Prescribed, Literally
I’ve been wanting to do something like this for a really long time and it means the world to me that so many of you have read the blog and been supportive. Hearing from everyone that read my last post confirmed for me that starting this blog was a good idea. I received a lot of compliments and anecdotes from people telling me that they appreciated my candor and willingness to talk about issues that they hadn’t heard talked about or weren’t able to talk about themselves. So, thank you for reading. I was struggling for a very long time with writer’s block, I would start something and then immediately criticize it and not know how to continue. It felt like I was running full force into a brick wall. I think that happened because I was trying to write fiction. When I was a kid and in middle school, I could write fiction like nobody’s business. Now, I realized that I struggle with fiction because I can’t relate to it anymore. I don’t want to write about made up characters that deal with real life scenarios. I want to write about real people that deal with real scenarios. So, let’s chat about a real life thing, shall we?
Mental illness. It’s a phrase that people spit out of their mouths like it’s rotten. A phrase that makes people uneasy and nervous, ironically. The real life equivalent of saying Voldemort. This is a topic I’m nervous to discuss because it is incredibly personal to me. And I have reservations about talking about my experience with this due to the controversy surrounding it. But I feel that it is important to talk about, regardless of how weary it makes me. Mental illness is no joke and if talking about this could potentially help someone then feeling anxiety about this is worth it. According to The National Institute of Mental Health, in 2016 it was found that nearly 1 in every 5 adults in the U.S. lives with a mental illness. If you’re bad at math like I am, that’s 44.7 MILLION people. Almost 45 million people in the U.S. have a mental illness and yet we still treat those people that are afflicted like lepers. Like they are lesser human beings than us because of something that they can’t control. Now, not everyone who has a mental illness is treated like shit. Because some are more accepted than others and by accepted, I mean acknowledged. Such as ADD and ADHD. Those are illnesses that are more commonly accepted because they are less scary to think about. I don’t know anyone who has thrown a bitch fit over someone that has a hard time sitting still, concentrating and overlooking things. They’ve gotten frustrated but not immediately assumed that they were unstable and broken. Let’s face it those are the easiest to wrap the mind around. But when things start to get complicated is when people tend to start getting judgmental and scared and hateful. And hate stems from fear. I can’t remember where I heard that but it’s pretty damn accurate. For example, I’ve heard those who have Schizophrenia blatantly referred to as crazy. And why are they called crazy? Because of Schizophrenia’s most popularized symptoms, delusions and hallucinations. We’ve all heard tales of people seeing animals or people, hearing voices that tell them to do horrific things and those are legitimate things that happen. But those are all we hear about. And because we don’t necessarily understand why that happens, we get scared and demonize them. Which is bullshit. If we immediately got scared of everything we didn’t understand nobody would ever leave their houses. I don’t understand how concrete is made but that doesn’t mean that I don’t walk on the sidewalk or get in a car and drive on the street. I would venture to say that Schizophrenia is probably the most controversial of the mental illnesses, but it is not alone in illnesses that make people uncomfortable. Take OCD for example, people just think it’s obsessive organizing and that it is a choice, something they can just stop doing. But it is infinitely more complicated than that. It’s uncontrollable thoughts and actions that they feel they have to repeat over and over again. And in extreme cases, they think something bad is going to happen if they don’t carry out those behaviors. People’s reactions to those illnesses are what facilitate such negative thought processes about hyper common maladies such as depression and anxiety.
Nothing pisses me off more than hearing someone say to a person with depression, just be happy. When you have clinical depression you don’t get to choose to “just be happy” because guess what? It isn’t that easy, it’s out of your control entirely. Clinical depression is a chemical imbalance in the brain. The brain isn’t producing enough serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine neurotransmitters. Causing feelings of sadness, hopelessness, lack of interest/motivation, guilt, low energy, etc. I could go on for pages and pages but at the risk of sounding like a commercial for an antidepressant I’ll stop. I think you get the point. I am one of those people who has been told to “just be happy”. I was diagnosed with depression coupled with seasonal affective disorder, anxiety, insomnia, and OCD like repetitive thoughts when I was in 6th grade. As if being 11 and in middle school wasn’t hard enough, let’s throw a mood disorder in the mix, that should be fine. Right? Wrong. Being told you have a mental illness is like waking up one morning and realizing you have a tattoo that you’ve never seen before. You don’t know how you got it, you’re scared that it’s there in the first place, anxious about what other people are going to think about it, it will never go away, and all you can do is take care of it and hope that it doesn’t get infected and fuck up everything else in your life. Depression can be immensely polarizing. I’ve heard a million and one people say that it gets better, but when your brain isn’t doing its job, it inadvertently convinces you that you are utterly and inconceivably alone. And it’s not a constant feeling either. It comes in waves, sometimes I can go for days without feeling like complete ass and sometimes I can go for days feeling like a dead slug. It’s not something you can predict. And it’s a difficult hole to try and dig yourself out of when you find yourself there. Now depression, just like people comes in all shapes and sizes. And most people’s experiences with it don’t mirror each other, and it’s that lack of sameness that breeds the loneliness that is so common in depressed people. I know all too well about that feeling of loneliness. I’m going to take you on a journey through what a bad day looks like for me, which will be really easy to do since I’m having a bad day today. When I wake up I don’t usually know right away that my brain has hit the off switch on functioning. The first indicator is this ever present feeling of heaviness. Like someone dipped my whole body in molasses. Getting out of bed is physically difficult and I don’t even want to. Because even something simple like walking is just fucking hard. My body aches and I feel like a zombie and in reality I probably look like one too. Next on the shit list is the mental fog. And it genuinely feels exactly like it sounds. I can’t think clearly or focus on things that aren’t generally mindless and easy. I isolate myself and even though I’m feeling lonely and sad, I don’t want to be around other people. And I have no desire to eat, I just lose my appetite all together.
Anxiety does the same thing. I’ve been anxious, worried, and habitually stressed out for as long as I can remember. I’ve had teachers, friends, previous therapists, and even my parents call me a worrier. Which couldn’t be more accurate. I have a terrible habit of worrying about other people so much that I start to take on their problems. Stressing about my dad not having a girlfriend and hoping that he doesn’t end up dying alone. Worrying about my mom every time she gets sick, even if it’s just a cold. Taking on issues my friends are having with their families and trying to use my knowledge from many years of therapy to help them overcome their problems. Worrying and stressing that much can lead to panic. I remember the first time I had a panic attack, it was freshman year and I was in my 6th period Spanish class. Describing what a panic attack feels like is akin to trying to explain what the color red looks like. Especially because it’s subjective, no two people have the same experience. But because it’s important I’m going to do my best to explain. It feels like the world is crashing down on me for no particular reason. It’s terrifying. It legitimately feels like my skin is turning inside out. I get shaky, sweat like a whore in church, scared. It feels like I’m trapped in my own body and all I want to do is run away and hide. From myself. Panic attacks are something I still struggle with. They’ve decreased in prevalence since I found a medication regiment that works for me but even that doesn’t eradicate them completely. Most of the time I have no warning as to when one is going to happen. But there are some specific triggers, for example when I hear an unexpected loud bang or noise. I have PTSD and that sound sets off a fire in my brain that causes me to panic. Or when my stress level gets too high and I get overwhelmed. My mind doesn’t know whether to fight or flee so it gets stuck in the middle and I shut down. There is nothing that I know of that compares to that feeling. And when it’s over I’m left exhausted and weak. It fucking sucks. There’s no other way to say it. It fucking sucks.
When I was first diagnosed, I was paralyzed at the thought of telling anyone that I have d&a (depression and anxiety, it’s getting annoying writing out the entire words). I was scared of being judged by my peers, and looked at like a freak, like I was different; even more different than I already felt. I didn’t want to get bitched at by everyone for being the emotionally broken girl, which is what I thought I was. I remember my first appointment with my psychiatrist, I was scared. I was adamant about not wanting to go on medication, but my parents thought otherwise. Which wasn’t a bad thing. In reality going on medication was the best thing that could have happened. Because I don’t know where I would be without it. I’ve had the discussion with multiple people about how I shouldn’t need to be on medication anymore. That I should be able to just learn how to deal with my depression and move on. But it isn’t that simple. Like I said before, depression is a chemical imbalance in the brain. The medication helps rebalance me. But it isn’t an exact science. Since 6th grade I have been on 8 different medications, some of which I still take. Why so many you ask? It comes back to it not being an exact science. Sometimes the medication will work for a while and then just stop. Which, speaking from personal experience, is a bitch and a half. It’s so aggravating when you can feel that something isn’t right but should be. That being said, finding the right medication, or medications in my case can be immensely helpful. I’ve gone from regular panic attacks and depression so bad that you can’t complete simple tasks to what I refer to as, being at ground zero. Ground zero is a great place to be, no extreme highs and the absolute lowest of lows. Just level. There is no joy in the world that can compare to finally feeling normal when you’re used to feeling like your emotions are exploding.
I have been really lucky to have a family who completely supports me and is always there when I need them. And they understand when I’m having a shitty day and what that means. I have been spectacularly lucky to have that. Others have not been so lucky. And that breaks my heart. Nobody deserves to be looked down upon for something that they can’t control. It’s like getting mad at someone for the color of their eyes. They didn’t choose the color, genetics gave them that color. So, who are we to judge them for that? This post is jam packed with facts and personal testimonials and if you gain anything at all from it, I hope you gain some understanding and empathy. That the next time you see someone on the street talking to themselves or one of your friends is really sad or stressed out for no obvious reason. Don’t judge. Try to understand. Try and wrap your mind around the concept that their brain is, for lack of a better phrase, rebelling against them. You don’t choose to have a mental illness, just like you don’t choose to have legs. It’s what life has bestowed upon you. So, I challenge you to try and change your frame of mind, you may find it enlightening.

Yesterday, the European Parliament approved amendments to the controversial Copyright Directive, a piece of legislation intended to update copyright for the internet age. Few pieces of legislation have polarized Europe this much in recent years. Critics said the vote heralded the death of the internet, while supporters congratulated themselves for saving the livelihoods of starving artists and giving US tech giants a poke in the eye.
But the proposed change hasn’t finished happening yet, and it’s still too early to say exactly what it will mean. The text will be tweaked in upcoming negotiations, and the directive has a slim chance of being rejected altogether at another vote from the whole European Parliament 2019. Whatever legislation is passed will then have to be implemented by individual nations, all while facing likely legal challenges.
In other words, things are going to get more confusing before they get any clearer. But before that happens, let’s work out where we stand for now.
WHAT IS THE DIRECTIVE TRYING TO ACHIEVE?
Much of the outrage has been over two parts of the directive: Articles 11 and 13. But their intent, when described by supporters anyway, is pretty benign. Article 11 simply gives publishers the right to ask for paid licenses when their news stories are shared by online platforms, while Article 13 says that online platforms are liable for content uploaded by users that infringes copyright.
Both measures attempt to redress an imbalance at the core of the contemporary web: big platforms like Facebook and Google make huge amounts of money providing access to material made by other people, while those making the content (like music, movies, books, journalism, and more) get an ever-shrinking slice of the pie.
Not everyone involved in the creative industry is complaining about this, obviously. It’s benefited a lot of people, and a lot of internet users. But it’s obvious that the modern, ad-supported web has left companies in Silicon Valley extremely rich while torpedoing revenue in other industries. The Copyright Directive is supposed to level the playing field.
ARTICLE 11, THE LINK TAX
Article 11 is the so-called “link tax,” which gives publishers a right to ask for paid licenses when online platforms share their stories. The obvious target is aggregators like Google News, but opponents worry the law could have broader applications.
Some extreme interpretations have suggested that this might even stop ordinary web users sharing new stories, but the text of Article 11 does exempt individuals. It says that the new rights given to publishers “shall not prevent legitimate private and non-commercial use of press publications by individual users.” (You can read the amended version of Article 11 in this document on page 54.)
However, it’s not clear what counts as a commercial platform. What about blogs or RSS feeds that aggregate headlines in much the same way Google News does? What about a Facebook page operated by an individual who also has a huge audience?
There’s also the question of what counts as sharing a story. An amendment added to the directive in yesterday’s vote says that mere hyperlinks can’t be taxed, nor can “individual words.” But how many words is that? When do enough individual words become a snippet?
As is common with the Copyright Directive, it’s difficult to know what is even being asked. Julia Reda, MEP for the Pirate Party and one of the directive’s leading critics, says it’s just not clear enough. “This hyperlinking exception would not work online because no one clicks on a URL that doesn’t include a brief description of what it’s linking to,” Reda tellsThe Verge.
Critics also note that national versions of this law don’t tend to work. In Spain, for example, in 2014, a law was passed that forced publishers to charge news aggregators for sharing snippets. Google reacted by shutting down Google News; local aggregators couldn’t afford the fees and collapsed; and overall traffic to sites fell by as much as 15 percent. A similar opt-in law was passed in Germany in 2013. Google reacted by dropping sites who wouldn’t let their content be shared for free and again, traffic fell and publishers bent the knee.
ARTICLE 13, THE UPLOAD FILTER
The far bigger headache is Article 13, dubbed the “upload filter” by critics. It says that platforms “storing and giving access to large amounts of works and other subject-matter uploaded by their users” are liable for copyright infringement committed by users. (Meaning they can be sued by rights holders.) So, platforms and copyright holders must “cooperate in good faith” to stop this infringement from happening in the first place.
The difficulty, again, is working out what this provision actually means and how it might be enforced. (You can read the amended version of Article 13 in this document on page 56.)
Critics are clear: it means upload filters, forcing sites like YouTube and Facebook to scan every piece of content users share, and checking it against a database of copyrighted material. Such a mechanism would be ripe for abuse by copyright trolls and would make millions of mistakes. The technology simply doesn’t exist to scan the internet’s content in this way.
This specter of an upload filter has been framed by critics as the EU trying to “kill your memes.” Proponents of the bill say this isn’t the case, and that previous laws make parodies and memes exempt from copyright claims. Reda claims this doesn’t help.
“There are two problems with this,” Reda tells The Verge. “The first is that exceptions or limitations to copyright on a European level different from country to country, and a lot of countries do not have exceptions for memes, for example. The second problem is that even where memes are legal, upload filters would not be capable of distinguishing between them and infringing material.”
Reda gives the example of someone making a reaction GIF from a popular movie. How would an algorithm judge the context that GIF was being used in? It would just spot the infringing content and take it down.
However, some people disagree with this interpretation, and say the text of the Copyright Directive doesn’t actually necessitate upload filters. Instead, it would be something more like YouTube’s Content ID, which scans content after the fact for copyrighted material.
“I’m not sure it does amount to an upload filter,” Mark Owen, an IP specialist at UK law firm Taylor Wessing tells The Verge. Owen says the version of the directive before this week’s vote “was more like that,” but was tweaked as a compromise to “enable parliament to vote for this version.”
The older version of the directive talks about “the use of effective content recognition technologies” to identify infringing material, a phrase that’s now been removed from the text. Exemptions were also added specifically for sites like Wikipedia and GitHub, which both share a lot of user-generated content.
If Article 13 does lead to super-powered Content ID, that’s not going to be a good thing. Content ID is known to make mistakes, like taking down a video for the “copyright infringement” of having birds chirping in the background. These sorts of mistakes would only multiply if Content ID had to cover a wider range of material, and getting mistaken takedowns reversed would become a more lengthy process than it is now.
“These laws are written to a large extent by politicians who don’t use the internet very actively,” says Reda. “If you think the internet is made up of just YouTube and Facebook, you will come up with this sort of sweeping legislation.”
ANY OTHER BAD NEWS?
Yes! While Articles 11 and 13 have gotten the most attention so far, the new directive does also tighten up copyright in lots of smaller ways. There are concerns over how the directive treats text and data mining programs (or TDM), for example, potentially exposing automated scanners to copyright claims. And one clause, only added recently, might give sports leagues exclusive rights over any images or video of a game, a significant escalation in the ongoing fight over sports GIFs that might extend to fan-taken photos of a stadium before the game.
SO WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
This version of the Copyright Directive now goes into trilogues — a type of three-way dialogue (hence the name) between select members of Parliament, the European Commission, and representatives of member states. This process generally happens behind closed doors, meaning there’ll be little public oversight or news coming out of the process. It’s possible that some of the more troubling parts of the directive will be removed, which is what Axel Voss, the MEP who’s been leading the charge on the legislation, has promised. But it’s also possible the directive will stay much the same.
After trilogues, the directive will face a final vote from the European Parliament some time in spring 2019. That could be as early as January, or as late as March.
This vote will be the last chance to reject the directive entirely. It’s worth noting that although the entire legislation passed with a decent majority (438 in favor versus 226 opposed), the vote on specific amendments was closer (393 versus 279 for Article 11, and 366 versus 297 for Article 13). This shows there was sizable opposition to these worrying parts. The vote will also be taking place close to EU elections in May, giving vocal citizens good leverage if they want to persuade their representatives to take up a specific stance.
But having got this far, it’s unlikely the directive will fail to pass altogether. Most experts The Verge spoke to say that’s just not how the EU tends to work. “The European Parliament is a body of compromise. If the agreement in the trilogues goes a certain direction, it’s super hard for the plenary to overturn that,” Gus Rossi, global policy director of US nonprofit Public Knowledge, told The Verge earlier this week.
IP lawyer Owen agreed, saying the groups backing this legislation have been after it for too long to turn back now. “This is the first major change to online copyright since 2001,” says Owen. “It’s taken a long time to get to this point, and you’ve got to wonder whether Parliament will just say ‘Well, we did that, and we’re not going to have another go in three years’ time.’”
If the final vote goes through, member states should have two years to implement the directive into their own legislation (the usual time period for this sort of law). What happens then is anyone’s guess. Reda suggests that if large platforms do have to introduce filters, it could lead to services stopping in Europe altogether — as we saw after GDPR.
“They might decide to just geoblock Europe, and just make their services not available to people accessing the internet from Europe,” says Reda. “They won’t have a lot of good options.” This would accelerate the balkanization of the web, as the regulatory landscapes of different geographic regions drift away from one another.
But that’s yet to come. The bad news is that the fight over Europe’s internet is far from over. That’s the good news, too.

XXXTentacion and a peek into the Cult Effect in Hip Hop
It’s certainly interesting - at least in some sense - to see people go through infinite sets of mental gymnastics to try and justify the actions of their idols, elevating them to far reaching idealistic pedestals where they can do no wrong. It’s an easily observable element of human psychology, perhaps tying in with the seemingly instinctual desire contained in many people to never admit that there’s a small, small chance that their opinion on something could be incorrect. Sure, it may be funny from a distance, but it’s absolutely beyond frustrating to put up with when it’s actually in your proximity. When two parties face each other and both are thoroughly convinced being incorrect makes them inferior, how can one party ever let up their ideas? Even when people get backed into a corner, it really can be quite fascinating to see how they try and continue, either by what topics they try and switch to or with what fallacies they pull out to try and desperately justify their stance on an issue. Funny enough however, while certainly related in the same sense, I’m not even specifically talking about politics here. While I’d agree with anyone that hyperpartisanship is a major issue in the political climate - especially at the moment - I’m actually talking about a common occurrence in the hip hop community.
If you aren’t familiar with XXXTentacion, he’s currently quite the polarizing figure in Hip Hop. I won’t judge his music - at least not here - but if anything else, it’s very unique, combining lofi punk elements with traditional hip hop. He’s gathered something akin to a cult following, a brigade of dedicated listeners that one might compare to a displaced metal fan - popular anime avatars, names filled with symbols reminiscent of early 2000s myspace pages, and a passion for throwing threats at those who dare to criticize him. I don’t think the community he’s created around him - much like other rappers, who are essentially expected to be walking cults of personality at this point - it’s just all part of his aesthetic. XXX is an anomaly; with his wide range of music encompassing everything from depressed crooning to borderline screamo to his half blonde dreadlocks appearance,he’s already carved out a niche for himself. Perhaps in the modern underground hip hop landscape - where emo and punk are merging in aesthetic and partially in sounds, and acts like $uicideboy$ and Lil Peep are expanding the passionate fanbases brought in by influential underground acts from Raider Klan fame, XXX isn’t even that far removed or unique. But never say that - or even imply that - in front of many of his fans. Disregarding that for a second, it’s important to take his origin into account here; a large part of what’s helped XXX rise to fame, besides mainstream fringe breakouts like Look at Me, is just how much controversy he’s managed to accrue in such a short amount of time. And yet whenever controversy occurs - whether it be beating up a gay guy in prison for allegedly “looking at him funny when he told him not to” to being accused (unconfirmed) of beating his girlfriend to spending time in jail for armed robbery, resisting arrest, and other crimes - there will always, always be people who come to his defense to justify his actions.
r/hiphopheads, a large hip hop community on reddit, thrives on lots of these types of discussions. Whenever a headline is posted about a rapper, whether popular or underground, I always love regardless to go into the comments and see what people have to say. As expected, most peoples’ views on the situation are based off the rapper themselves and not off the action done. I’m very much into hip hop, probably unhealthily so, but if there’s one thing I’ve personally learned is that there’s many, many times where you just have to separate the artist from the art. Anthony Fantano, a popular music critic, brought this up a long time ago in a video entitled “Can Bad People Make Good Music?”, and the point is more relevant than ever - it’s almost akin to asking “Can a bad politician pass good legislation?”. A lot of people would say no, because overlap in belief is seen as sacrilegious to many. And you know what? This more or less applies to music as well. As I mentioned with XXX, many peoples’ opinions of him are solely derived from their view of him. It works two ways; people who dislike him as a person view his music differently, and people who like music view him as a person differently. Now, this is a bit of a generalization of course, but obviously it isn’t completely all encompassing. Going into threads about him beating his ex-girlfriend, you’ll see comments which indicate that perhaps she did something to him which provoked his actions. Now, this isn’t an excuse - at all - but I’ll hand it to them that, fair enough, this is more or less somewhat better of a response to an alleged act than some of the other comments which literally state that she objectively deserved it. You can say that this is unfair because the incident was alleged, but what about his other actions? Grand theft, burglary, armed robbery? Fans will use the same logic to justify his actions.
Of course this isn’t limited to just XXX. A recent controversy of Young Thug allegedly hitting a female rapper spawned an argument in which many people were saying it wasn’t an issue. While there are certainly cultural implications of this - especially due to the imbued imagery that tends to surround women in hip hop - Young Thug, much like XXX, is often by fans dedicated to justifying his antics. He’s no stranger to controversy, and it definitely shows in his image as a rapper. But even beyond these two rappers, how many hip hop fans have you seen wearing clothing that says or slinging around phrases on social media like “#FREE(RAPPER)”. Whether it be Kodak, Gucci, XXX, or whoever else, fans are more confident in their idol than they are in their actual actions. While there’s certainly an argument that sure, the trial was unfair, or the imprisonment or punishment was the result of some systematic oppression or unfair judgement, is this always the case? Well, just like everyone else, it depends who you talk to. I don’t think many people would argue that their idol is necessarily above the law, but rather than they were unfairly treated. This curved logic allows for many fans to bend the narrative surrounding their idol to something more acceptable. How many people want to walk around proudly saying they’re a dedicated fan of a murderer for example? I don’t know many people who are proud to say they’re Big Lurch fans. It’s uncomfortable to do, and it relates back to the idea of separating an artist from their art. It’s hard to do, so it’s better for people to create an idealized image of their artist to spread. The issue is, the people who they argue with don’t see things the same way they do - the arguing ends up being one-sided, and leads into what can be described as desperate attempts to justify otherwise unacceptable actions. There’s cultural factors to all of this for sure, and certain backgrounds will certainly make you more disposed to viewing strings of actions in certain ways, But when do those actions cross the line from disposition to desperation? When do cultural differences in media get overshadowed by image-furthering marketers and relentless hypebeasts? I think really it ends up, just like everything else, in the eye of the beholder.

The Viral Video Star Behind the Fitness Fad That May Replace CrossFit
“Bro, what kind of muscles you have?” asks Ido Portal in a short video introducing his philosophy. He’s barefoot and shirtless, his long hair pulled back as he tumbles across the frame and does handstand push-ups in the rain. “No—bro, what kind of patterns you have? Can you flip? Can you invert? Can you crawl?”
The 48-year-old Ido Portal has spent the past three decades honing a physical credo and method that’s now practiced by thousands of people all over the world—from office workers, to former CrossFitters, to NBA players, to the ever-controversial UFC titan Conor McGregor. Known as The Ido Portal Method, or simply “movement,” his approach purports to take the “most potent” parts from a range of physical disciplines by shedding the dogmas that often accompany them. As he puts it: “I want the contents, not the container.”
Videos of Portal in motion began circulating in certain physical circles in the mid-2000s—entrancing clips in which he flows along the floor like liquid, playfully combining capoeira-inspired flips, hand-balancing, and animalistic movements. But it’s only in the past few years (in no small part thanks to McGregor’s influence) that his profile has exploded, his following has expanded, and his business has revved up.
Star athletes reportedly pay Portal six-figure sums for two weeks of in-person training. He spent chunks of the past year doing “movement design” (something akin to choreography) for a multi-million dollar Bollywood film, and is set to star in a mini-series in which he works with elite athletes in sports ranging from surfing to fighting. (Some of his closest students have landed similarly glitzy gigs, with two recently serving as advisers to the current season of Israeli Ninja Warrior.) Portal has been called a “guru” and a “movement master” more times than I can count; one interviewer even called him “the smartest man in the world.” But the question—hotly debated on Reddit and on MMA blogs—endures: Is there value in the movement, or is Portal simply slinging snake oil?
“Most people don’t have the user manual to their own machinery,” Portal told me emphatically when we connected over Skype. “Your being is a physical being. You brush your teeth everyday, you need to move everyday. It doesn’t take five minutes, and it does take a certain education.”
Portal seems like the the right guy to be dispensing such an education. He appears in control of every vertebrae and muscle fiber, he’s charismatic, and he looks the part. (“Why do all these movement teachers look like Jesus?” comedian, MMA commentator, and member of the Intellectual Dark Web Joe Rogan once joked.) For years, Portal tied his hair in a topknot and was so jacked he says he was once asked to shed muscle for a photoshoot. These days he’s ponytail-less and a bit less buff—he told me his muscles were getting in the way of evolving his movement practice in certain directions—but his body-fat percentage still hovers in the single digits and he can bust out a one-arm handstand or helicopter at will. The only clear sign he’s aging are the flecks of grey in his dark-brown beard.
And he is, fittingly, always on the move. Born and raised in Haifa, Israel, for the past decade he’s been effectively nomadic, carrying his possessions on his back as he brings his method across the globe. A few weeks before we spoke, he’d been leading a movement camp in Phuket. The week before it was Seoul. Next up: Cyprus. In between camps, he works with elite athletes—from Olympic swimmers, to MLB players, to professional mixed martial artists—applying his broad perspective to their sport to try to give them that extra edge. That might mean focusing on spinal articulation for a swimmer, or developing a baseball pitcher’s shoulder mobility through oft-neglected hanging work. Portal described himself as an “information-and-systems broker, mobilizing knowledge from one discipline to another.”
In Tel Aviv, much of this work takes place in what looks like a CrossFit box, but with more free floor space. The walls of the Ido Portal movement school are covered in handprints, scuff marks, and phrases like isolation → integration → improvisation and Let them DIRTY the walls, motherfucker! The equipment scattered about is basic: gymnastics rings, monkey bars, wooden sticks, tennis balls. As Portal—who tends to be either barefoot or in basic canvas shoes—puts it: “The more expensive the toys, the cheaper the mover.”
Some 700 people have joined the school since it opened in late 2014, he said. Throughout the day, you’ll find muscular men and women bouncing a tennis ball against a wall with their fists, working on inversions, experimenting with different kinds of squats, or slowly swinging a dowel while a partner evades it using spinal waves and soft acrobatics. Or, to hear Portal tell it, in each session students “step into the cloud of movement and attack a subject” by doing drills or challenges, “maybe it’s coordination, or speed ... ” Training in “movement” might look or sound frivolous to outsiders, but Portal and his tribe are nothing if not serious about it. “It’s not some hippie concept as many people make it out to be,” he said. “I am a radical person, for the good and the bad.” He and his “inner tribe” train from six to ten hours a day.
“How many movements did you learn today? This week?” he challenged me. “A contemporary dancer might learn hundreds of new movements in one class ... and the neurological connections being made, the type of brain that is being developed ... ” Portal has long preached that learning new, complex movements betters the brain in ways straightforward cardio or weights do not—and some recent research supports this. One 2015 study found that adults who undertook a regime loosely based on freestyle wrestling performed better in cognitive tasks than people who spent the same amount of time performing tiresome brain-training tasks or gutting it out on a stationary bike. Similar benefits have been seen in those who practiced Tai Chi as compared with brisk walking. But Portal believes his method is superior to other forms of training. “It makes you smarter, I know it, I feel it,” he told me. “There is no more potent tool to make people sharper, more complex, more ethical, more realistic.”
Portal presents his approach as a sort of atavistic antidote to our lifestyles—a bent that aligns him with the recent “evolutionary fitness” movement. Chief among the movement is Erwan Le Corre, the former parkourist and founder of the popular “MovNat” (a portmanteau of the French term for “natural movement”). Supposedly modeled after the challenges faced by our hunter-gatherer forebears, Le Corre’s wilderness workouts involve vaulting across rivers, heaving boulders, and climbing trees. Though Portal’s approach is perhaps more palatable for the urban set, the men lament similar things: Our 9-to-5 cubicle jobs, smartphone addiction, hyperspecialization in sports, and the rising obsession with fitness for aesthetic purposes have robbed us of our capacity to truly move, leaving us empty.
At the heart of movement culture is an emphasis on play. Animals and kids play as they navigate the world, Portal often says, but as adults we channel this instinct in futile or destructive directions. “That workmate of yours who’s always clicking his pen? That’s his body screaming, ‘Let’s play! Let’s play!’” he said in a recent interview. Portal frequently cites a Dutch text from the 1930s called Homo Ludens or “Man the Player,” which argues that play preceded mankind and is central to thriving societies.“ Most people think play is juvenile” he told me, “but it’s actually a training tool of all animals and must be undertaken with utmost seriousness.” Which explains why he’s as inspired by monkeys as he is by guys who break orbital bones for a living.
Portal lizard-crawled into the popular consciousness in 2015, when he was recruited as the “movement coach” of soon-to-be UFC “champ champ” Conor McGregor. The brash Dubliner was just beginning his rapid rise from little-known fighter to the UFC’s most-bankable star when, in 2013, he tore his ACL. While recovering, he started to look at training through a new lens: He discarded his more-conventional workouts, he studied footage of predators hunting their prey (and he got the ink to match—his sprawling chest tattoo depicts a crowned gorilla devouring a human heart). “I learned a lot more about how important balance is, how important control of the body is," he told Esquire. McGregor came across videos of Portal in motion and, fascinated, sought out the Israeli.
Numerous UFC fighters had dabbled in broader training before Portal appeared on the scene, aiming to improve not just their conditioning, but those qualities that sit somewhere between striking and the ground game. Carlos Condit had been frolicking outdoors with Le Corre since 2014, and Georges St-Pierre had been training gymnastics for years. Back in 1999, jiu-jitsu-legend-turned-MMA-star Rickson Gracie showcased his own discipline-melding workouts in the documentary Choke. But Portal’s approach—thanks to his loud-mouthed star student and his own habit of calling out doubters on social media—was immediately much more polarizing.
When videos emerged of the Israeli brandishing a pool noodle to test McGregor’s reflexes, the fighter Nate Diaz taunted McGregor for “playing touch-butt with that dork in the park” and criticized Portal, “that goofball with the ponytail,” for using the exposure to promote his own schtick. (McGregor would soon suffer his first UFC loss at Diaz’s hands, by second-round rear-naked choke, before winning a bloody rematch months later.) Sports writers and keyboard warriors mocked the seriousness with which Portal spoke about silly-looking drills. “Using the chaotic trajectory of a flying card to keep [Conor McGregor] sharp” reads Portal’s caption for a video of him flinging playing cards at the Irishman in preparation for his boxing bout against all-time great Floyd Mayweather. Here’s McGregor “risking a severe paper cut as he gets ready for his megafight,” one sports blogger rejoined. McGregor’s cartoonishly loose-armed warm-up, a product of his work with Portal, was memed to no end.
Some MMA commentators have suggested that any gains Portal provides might be mental. But McGregor credits movement training with his ability to ”fight in many stances, from many different angles,” with feeling “loose but connected at the same time.”(“I’m more a squeeze of the lime at the end of the dish,” Portal said about his own influence.)
As McGregor racked up wins with Portal in his corner—most memorably knocking out longtime champ Jose Aldo in a record 13 seconds—Portal says he was inundated with coaching requests. “I got some NBA players, some NFL players reaching out,” he told SBNation. “Tony Robbins reached out.”
“Whatever you do, don’t call him a guru or a master of movement,” a couple of his students told me seriously. “He hates that.” When we spoke, Portal emphasized that movement can’t be mastered—it’s too encompassing. “When people say ‘I’ve got it,’ I think, you’ve got nothing; you didn’t get shit,” he once put it, ”That only shows me how much they didn’t get it.”
Portal may shun the “movement guru” title, but his narrative about how movement culture came to be only bolsters this image. As he tells it, his method was born of a personal quest of sorts. Growing up in the beachy city of Haifa, he was an active kid, practicing kung fu. At 15, he took up the Afro-Brazilian martial art of capoeira. Skeptical of the dance and drumming aspects of the discipline, he was dragged to his first class by a friend but quickly became hooked. “I was living it, training night and day,” he told me—not just mastering the techniques, but dressing the part and learning Portuguese. Within a couple of years, he’d earned himself the nickname “The Missionary” for his radical dedication, and had started an academy in the basement of his family home.
Feeling constrained by the limits of the martial art, Portal soon began experimenting with other disciplines. While dabbling, he came to the “epiphany” that he wasn’t satisfied with any one realm, but was obsessed with movement as a whole. So, Portal says, he embarked on a years-long journey to find a movement teacher. “After countless searches, I could not find anyone who HONESTLY could represent that title,” he writes on his website. He decided he would become the movement teacher the world lacked, by continuing his travels and curating knowledge from experts in an array of fields.
Portal’s old blog recounts stints training with former U.S. junior national gymnastics team coach Christopher Sommer, balance expert Claude Victoria, and circus performer Yuval Ayalon, as well as a “crazy year” spent working as a physical theater performer in Bangkok and Berlin. He has cited as influences “strength sensei” Charles Poliquin and paleo patriarch Robb Wolf (who, Portal told me, sent him money to keep his capoeira school afloat when funds were tight). Over the years, he’s practiced boxing, jiu jitsu, and yoga; learned from parkourists, dancers, and osteopaths. All the while, he read voraciously—about speed, coordination, “the riddle of the fight”—and documented his evolving method on a blog and, later, on Facebook and Instagram.
In the mid-2000s, Portal founded a new training space in Haifa where he and his devoted capoeira students began experimenting with movement outside of the martial art. He built a “special-ops unit” of movers, he told me, doubling the gym fees and “eliminating all the unnecessary ... the people who weren’t willing to train many hours a day, six or seven days a week.” When he began traveling frequently to teach hand-balancing workshops and perform physical theater, he closed the school. But his students weren’t content to stop training; one of his closest students, Odelia Goldschmidt, started a small training group in a local park called “The Freaks.” Shortly thereafter, her brother Roye opened the movement facility in Tel Aviv and helped start a mentorship program to pass on Portal’s methods. (Each of the 40 mentees check in with Portal regularly, receive personalized programming, and attend a couple week-long camps each year.)
Critics in the MMa sphere often attribute attribute Portal’s fame to McGregor’s star power or the Israeli’s cult of personality, rather than the substance of his ideas. But the rise of movement culture maps onto a broader shift toward more-functional approaches to fitness. Beginning in the 1970s, Arnold Schwarzenegger and the Nautilus machine helped usher in an approach to training that privileged form over function. By the 2000s, the fitness pendulum had swung so far in this direction that even kids’ figurines were more jacked—scale up a GI Joe Extreme doll from that era to the height of 5ft 10 and his chest would’ve been just three inches smaller than Schwarzenegger’s at his steroid-inflated peak. In 2003, the word “bigorexia” appeared in the Oxford English Dictionary, and a decade later, a condition called muscle dysmorphia—anorexia’s brawnier counterpart—abruptly entered the DSM.
A forceful countercurrent to this image mania emerged in the 2000s, led by CrossFit. Within a decade, thousands of mirrorless “boxes” had spread across the country, whose trainers touted “functional fitness” through daily workout challenges drawing from gymnastics, Olympic lifting, and sprinting. Soon, freerunning and parkour gyms began cropping up, and a number of more-traditional gyms traded machines for floor space and some battle ropes, to allow for more bodyweight work. Tough Mudders, Spartan Races, and their ilk made a take on Le Corre’s favored training format—the outdoor obstacle course—more accessible, and continued an emphasis on a more versatile body.
Then, in 2013, David Epstein’s best-selling The Sports Gene prompted fevered discussion about the “epidemic of hyperspecialization” in sports. Epstein pointed to a spate of studies showing greater rates of injury and burnout among high-school students who honed in on a single sport before their teenage years. Even more compelling, his book debunked the so-called “10,000 hours rule” to mastery, popularized by Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers in 2008. Epstein cited research showing that those who entered the topmost rung of their field tended to dabble across disciplines further into their teen years than those who topped out at a sub-elite level. Kids who played a range of sports for longer tended to develop “physical literacy,” Epstein explained, which meant they were quicker to pick up the skills of the sport they ultimately settled on quicker than peers with a narrower sporting background. Epstein advocated that kids and teens do the very things Portal preaches for adults: experiment with a range of disciplines, play in unstructured ways.
In Just Move, a 2017 documentary about movement culture, one of Portal’s students says the community aims “to bring movement and life and everything we do out there to as many people as possible.” And in the past couple of years, his inner tribe has begun to fulfill this prophecy. Movement schools have cropped up around the world—in Boulder, New York City, Miami; in Europe, Hong Kong, Brazil, and Australia—mostly started by the students of the Ido Portal mentorship program.
Matt Bernstein and Zack Finer were both heavily involved in CrossFit when friends sent them YouTube videos of Portal in motion. Intrigued, they reached out to him, attended camps and workshops, and quickly became hooked on his method. They started introducing elements of Portal’s method to their personal-training clients and, after a few years, left their respective jobs and cities to start a movement school together in Boulder, Colorado. They told me more than thirty people uprooted their lives so they could regularly train with them, and talked at length about the various ways Portal’s approach had impacted their lives for the better. “Ido’s nickname for me was ‘the refrigerator,’ because I had the build and athletic prowess of one,” said Finer. “The stuff I can do now, I would never have dreamed about doing years ago.” (Their Instagram profiles feature videos of them nailing inversions, working on acrobatic maneuvers, and learning to balance a soccer ball on their head for a minute, among other things.)
Bernstein added: “CrossFit is physically hard, but [Portal’s method] is physically challenging, it’s intellectually challenging, it challenges your ego ... a lot.” (This, too maps onto a larger trend: A 2015 study by students at the Harvard Divinity School noted that as feelings of loneliness have risen and young Americans have become less religiously affiliated than ever before, “spaces traditionally meant for exercise have become the locations of shared, transformative experience.”)
But such personal transformations aren’t accessible to just anyone. Portal makes no bones about the fact that involvement in the community requires a significant investment of both time and money. In a 2013 Facebook post, he wrote that his movement camps were for the “got money and a ton of motivation and willing to travel kind of person” (for the “no-money, little motivation, want to fuck around kind of person” he recommended Zumba). In 2015, he lost fans in the parkour world and beyond when he announced he wouldn’t train vegans, saying they wouldn’t be able to keep up with his meat-eating “tribe.” The dozen or so movement schools that have cropped up in these past few years have made Portal’s methods more readily available. But even now, those wishing to take part in one of his camps are required to sign non-disclosure agreements and fork over between $600 and $1000 for two to three days.
“I’m willing to elevate the crowd by providing them with some of the things I’ve found to be useful. But I’m not willing to be pulled down by them into some watered-down thing—some P90X, some CrossFit-certification weekend event,” Portal told me, when I asked if he seeks to spread his method further. “If [the public] come with me, that’s fine, but I’m not going to them.” He added: “Sometimes I think, let’s let the trend die already for God’s sake, and have only the really hardcore practitioner group.”
When we spoke, Portal kept emphasizing that his approach has to be experienced, not just described. “It sounds very vague because there is nothing that I can say beyond these descriptive words,” he said. Maybe Portal’s elusiveness is just a way to convince outsiders he’s offering something new and revolutionary, as some have argued. Maybe its just another cultish fitness fad with a short shelf life. Maybe you could achieve similar results, and the promised “paradigm shift,” training some other discipline multiple hours per day—like dance or martial arts.
All of these “maybes” are good for business: How will you know, Portal and his followers insist, unless you try it?
