hello! your zutara posting today has finally motivated me to ask this question because I came to atla very late(last year, to be specific) and I Love It Very Much but am 1000% out of the loop as far as why what remains of fandom (at least that I've seen among my friends) is so very strongly zutara. I'm not opposed to it per se I just don't really know what has driven it to apparently be such a popular ship? can you help me understand and maybe convert me a little bit?

This got so long, I’m so sorry. I don’t know how to put it under a cut on mobile and it already got deleted once so I’m scared to mess with it lol. Moving on.

I’m gonna start this with a disclaimer that im on mobile so formatting is tricky and I’m also really new to atla in that I only completed my first watch through in like 2019??? So some of my info is all just based on what I’ve picked up from Discourse 👀 so anyway the sparknotes version: zutara was wildly popular from the beginning. To the point where the atla crew internally disagreed on which ship should be endgame. (Ex. Bryke [showrunners] asked the writers to rewrite The Southern Raiders to make Zuko seem less ideal for Katara than Aang [which failed, depending on who you ask]; the animation team purposefully created a visual parrallel between Oma and Shu in the Cave of Two Lovers and Zuko and Katara in the catacombs under Ba Sing Se in the Crossroads of Destiny; etc.)

The ship was popular enough that Bryke actually chose to display zk fanart at a con for the sole purpose of mocking the fans, but that’s neither here nor there. The entire episode Ember Island Players, while a love letter to/parody of the whole show, was an opportunity to address zutara’s viability as a canon pairing (while, again, mocking zutaras for romanticizing that catacombs scene). Point is! It’s always been popular but with it not being endgame, there’s got to be something that’s given it staying power.

And that’s honestly got to do with three things: their dynamic, thematic cohesion, and potential.

(You know what... you know what, it’s four things. The fourth is they’re so aesthetically pleasing together and individually. Like, they’re just good looking people [specifically when they’re grown but they’re also cute kids] and that absolutely doesn’t hurt) (but it’s not the Point, it’s just nice to point out sometimes)

The dynamic is hard to get into without also looking at the canon pairings, but I think I can do that without unnecessary bashing. It’s just that part of the magic of zutara is really highlighted by what they give to each other that their other relationships don’t.

First off, it’s classic enemies to (would be) lovers. The absolute truest form of it. It’s not too different from how CS started out: a rogue antagonist with a job to do—but no personal vendetta against the future love interest—who is deeply and emotionally invested in his personal storyline (revenge/redemption) with little regard for how it effects other people after his entire life and genuine good nature are marred by suffering, and a fierce warrior girl with a strong moral compass and her own personal investment in stopping him (protect her family and save the world doing it). Obviously frustration and animosity grew between them by the nature of them being on opposing sides, but that just lends itself to the sweetness of their later reconciliation.

The thing is that while they’re wildly different on the surface (he’s a hot-headed prince of a fascist regime who is trying to capture the Avatar to please his father; she’s a nurturing daughter of the chief who is trying to protect and train the Avatar in order to topple his father’s throne) they find out that they have so much more in common both in their experiences and their personalities.

(What follows is an excessive use of the word “both” and I’m sorry about that)(I can edit it. I can do that. That IS an option............)

They both have an innate sense of justice that they are determined to see done (zuko, at the war meeting, sticking up for the Earth Kingdom kid when the guards torment his family, choosing not to steal from the pregnant couple despite his circumstances, abiding by his word to leave the SWT should Aang come willingly, etc.; katara, literally.... at any point). They both have pretty one-track minds at accomplishing certain goals once they’ve put their mind to it, regardless of a lack of support in that endeavor (it goes without saying I guess, but zuko’s entire hunt; katara’s determination to get the earth benders to fight back, her determination to absolutely destroy Pakku until he agrees to teach her, etc.). They both lost their mothers at young ages. Their worlds are war-torn and traumatizing to them both, if in different ways, but that ultimately forces them to grow up too quickly to be wholly independent individuals. They both have issues with their fathers (for WILDLY different reasons, but). They both hold extreme prejudices that they need to learn to overcome (which ties into thematic cohesion)(bit like Lizzie and Darcy in that way but magnified by a million). They’re both extremely emotional and empathetic—which can and often does result in loud outbursts. Katara’s a bit better adjusted and can temper her anger for longer than S1 Zuko can, but they both feel that anger deeply and have no compunctions expressing it (Katara is, usually, more justified, particularly in S1. Again, S1 Zuko is severely maladjusted but at the point when they could’ve feasibly become a couple, he’s so much better off with the way he carries himself). They both struggle with feelings of inferiority in their bending abilities when confronted with prodigal benders like Aang and Azula, but have the work ethic required to double down and become two of the most powerful benders in the three remaining nations. This is a little more minor but it is a parrallel that appeals to some shippers that they both have these alter egos in the Painted Lady (notably fire nation coded) and the Blue Spirit (water tribe coded) that are pretty different from who they are day-to-day and are useful in accomplishing a purpose that they as themselves cannot.

(I’m.... I just realized that this could potentially get very long. Should I have made a slide show with bullet points??????)

Anyway, similar. I know there’s more but there’s literally so much to love about zutara that I’ll drive myself a little crazy trying to compile all the ways they’re similar. (Just gonna say that at this exact moment I went back to add more similarities.... so okay then)

Once they’ve reconciled, we see how all of these things only lend themselves to a deeper intimacy together than they share with literally anyone else. There’s a steady partnership that positions them as the mom/dad of the gaang, while also providing the support necessary to allow the other to not have to carry so much responsibility. A lot of zutaras will point out how zuko is actually depicted doing the more domestic chores that are normally relegated to Katara once he joins the gaang, since the others in the group are two 12-year-olds and sokka. The one that sticks out the most is how he makes tea for the group and then serves them, while Katara is able to just relax with her friends around the fire. Fanon expands upon this a lot to Zuko helping with the laundry or the cooking or whatever else needs doing since he, as a once-refugee, is used to doing his own domestic tasks. Before Zuko joined, Katara was the one mothering everyone, sewing for them, cooking for them, etc. She’s always tending to the needs of the group, and that includes emotionally. She does the emotional labor for the gaang 99% of the time, but when she’s the one falling apart, she’s usually doing it alone and without the comfort that she normally provides for others. Until Zuko. And that’s before they’re even friends.

Which is WHY people romanticize the catacombs of Ba Sing Se so much. Katara is verbally attacking Zuko out of her own righteous anger but also her own prejudice when Zuko, surprisingly, chooses to be vulnerable with her. He’s been on a journey that’s opened his eyes a bit, but he’s never actively chosen to expose the rawest parts of his past to anyone. But for some reason he chooses to do that with Katara of all people. While she’s yelling at him. He sees her humanity, and for once can look past his prejudice and empathize with her. And this time, when she breaks down, she gets to be comforted. Katara normally talks about her mother when she’s trying to explain to someone else that she sees and understands they’re pain, as a form of comfort to them. Here, Zuko uses the exact same tactic. He sees her and he understands. And for zuko? He’s not being shut down. He’s allowed to articulate his pain regarding his mother without being ignored and made to internalize it, and he’s allowed to process how he feels about his scar out loud without being told that he deserved it. And then he lets her touch his scar, something we’ve seen him actively avoid before. He’s completely open to her and she’s completely open to him and all it took was one five minute conversation. She was about to use the little bit of Spirit water that she had, that she was saving for something Important, to heal the scar that still daily causes him pain just because they had, somehow, connected.

Plus there’s the whole parallel to the star-crossed lovers forbidden from one another, a war divides their people—

And then zuko messes up, he regresses, he gets what he wants and he HATES it. And the sense of justice he had as a child has been restored to him against his will and he can’t think of anything he wants to do more than the Right Thing, so he joins team avatar. Before he does that though, we get to see his relationship with Mai, which is where comparison really comes in. And what we see is Zuko, fresh off of his encounter with Katara in the catacombs, trying to be emotionally honest with Mai... and getting shut down and dismissed. Which is just how Mai is and it’s fine, but not for Zuko. Still, he keeps trying, and he keeps getting ignored or scoffed at or yelled at. Which is really a larger symbol for how he doesn’t fit in his old life anymore, but again that’s about thematic cohesion. He tries to articulate his anxieties about returning home, he tries to make romantic gestures, he tries to explain how morally conflicted he’s feeling—and Mai diverts to some kind of physical affection to shut him up and a parting comment that is pretty much always, in essence, “I don’t wanna talk about this.” So they don’t. On the other hand, once zuko and Katara are friends, we see him again emotionally distraught and caught up in his anxieties about facing Iroh, and it’s Katara who comes to him and listens to him and comforts and encourages him.

Similarly, we have Aang clamming up and getting uncomfortable whenever Katara shows any negative emotion, usually resulting in him making excuses or running away. Or, in the case of the Southern Raiders, lecturing her on how she needs to just let go of her anger about her mother’s murder. People have talked this episode to death and usually better than I ever could, so imma... keep it brief. There’s a serious disconnect between Aang and Katara in his ability to empathize with Katara and her needs that has her tamping down her vulnerability and amping up her anger. He tells her that he was able to forgive his people’s genocide and appa’s kidnapping (petnapping? Theft??), which is blatantly not true but also not an entirely equal parrallel to Katara’s situation, and continues making these little remarks throughout the episode. But it’s Zuko that Katara opens up to. It’s with him that she’s able to talk about the most traumatic day of her life, and it’s with him that she’s able to get the closure she needs, cementing their bond as friends and partners. This disagreement between Aang and Katara is then... never resolved. They just never bring it up and hear what the other is saying.

There’s a fic called The Portraits of Ember Island that has a line that so completely sums up the heart of the matter for why people love their dynamic. For context, zuko has woken up early to help Katara with the cooking and they spend the whole time just letting one another talk, and zuko stops to ask why she always just lets him talk. And so she stops to ask why he’s always helping, and it goes as follows:

There’s just... so much mutual support! Trust! Intimacy!! And it just continues like that from the Southern Raiders on, listening to each other, advising each other, watching each other’s backs! And then! Literally saving each other’s lives!! I will never be over the last Agni kai. Not ever. Zuko may have been willing to jump in front of lightning for anyone, but he actually did it for Katara. And in a show, that’s the thing that really matters. It’s a fulfilled trope usually exclusively applied to romantic pairings, and it ended up applying to Zuko and Katara. And then she ran out into the middle of a fight with tunnel vision just to get to him.

Also!! Also Zuko pushing Katara out of the way of the falling rocks at the Western Air Temple!! And Katara catching him as he fell from the war balloon that he fought Azula on!! Before they’re even getting along, they’re the ones reaching for each other. They come to this place of equal ground, as partners, who watch each other’s backs, call each other out but still listen attentively and understand, and provide the support that the other has been sorely lacking up until they knew each other (whether that be from lack of effort or lack of understanding from others, or an unwillingness to accept it for themselves).

Then, trailing along under the surface of this, we see the themes of the show totally embodied by Zuko and Katara as individuals and in their relationship to one another. There’s a YouTuber, sneezyreviews, who has a, like, 2-hour explanation on why she not only loves zutara but also believes that their endgame would’ve actually elevated the writing of atla to new levels particularly because of thematic cohesion and resolved character arcs. It’s the zutara dissertation I never knew I needed, and it’s funny and eloquent and effective, so I’m just going to sum up her section on thematic cohesion to the best of my abilities and then link it for whenever you have the time. And I HIGHLY recommend it, especially if you want a full understanding of what makes zutara so great and gives it such longevity.

Guru pathik has a line that goes something like this: separation is an illusion; things that seem different are just two parts of the same whole. Iroh also tells Zuko something similar: balance and strength are achieved when the different nations come together and influence one another and celebrate what makes them each unique. And this lesson is a massive central arc that both Zuko and Katara go through, moving past a black-and-white, good guys-vs-bad guys, us-vs-them mentality and into a greyer, more nuanced view of the world. Zuko sees the fire nation from an entirely new perspective and while he still loves and hopes for his nations future, he surrenders his blind loyalty to them in exchange for an unflinching loyalty to peace and love. Katara too had to come to terms with the fact that cruel people exist in the earth kingdom and water tribes, while some fire nation citizens are just regular, kind people who also need and deserve to have someone speak on their behalf. And this is honed in directly on how they view each other. They grow in their individual journeys to be open to the humanity in the other and then, once they’ve found that, they’re able to grow more in compassion for others in a beautiful feedback loop. And this is all matched in the symbolism repeatedly and intentionally associated with them in canon: sun and moon, fire and water, yin and yang, Oma and Shu who found love despite their warring nations. Their individual arcs are completed in each other and complement the themes of atla beautifully.

The canon pairs... just don’t. Which, again, is fine. But the very things that give atla longevity and popularity are anchored in zutara. Kat@ang doesn’t accomplish this. They’re... nice. Sweet. Especially when you erase a good portion of their interactions in S3. It could’ve been just a sweet love story. (Personally, the dynamic between toph and aang accomplish the same thing that zutara does, with complementary personalities that fulfill the theme of opposites blending in harmony) M@iko, on the other hand, is less sweet but I think wasn’t even supposed to last. Zuko’s relationship with Mai seems to represent his relationship with his old life as a whole. He can’t be emotionally vulnerable, he’s goaded into abusing his privileges, his agency and opinions aren’t respected. They just don’t have common ground with which to discuss anything that matters, so they don’t. As far as themes, the relationship doesn’t fit with atla. It’s zuko returning to and sticking with what is (on the surface) like him, what’s expected. Fire nation with fire nation. Fluid water bender with the flexible air bender. Like with like, separated from what is different and challenging and complementary.

And all of these things combined of course lead to the potential for the ship. I don’t know how familiar you are with the post-atla canon but... well, miss “I will never turn my back on people who need me”, miss “I don’t want to heal! I want to fight!” ends up living quietly in the SWT as a designated healer who turns a blind eye to the water tribe civil war happening right outside her front door. Which can be fine! People change! Some people just wanna stay inside. I just wanna stay inside! But the potential future for zutara is so much more satisfying, with Katara becoming the most unconventional Fire Lady the uppity old cads who are stuck on the old ways have ever seen. Fanon has her serving as a voice for the other nations within a kingdom at the point of its biggest political upheaval, as a confidante to Zuko who can actually help him while he’s trying to figure out how to move forward and make reparations. They have the opportunity, together, to accomplish what they both have set on their hearts to fight for: positive change that lends itself to harmony and balance. And the steambabies! A popular headcanon is that their firstborn daughter, the crown princess, is actually a waterbender, which causes such an uproar among the people who are adamantly clinging to the old ways. It’s just a future full of potential to be forces for good together, full of trust, intimacy, joy. The exact era of peace and love and balance that zuko announces that he intends to ring in with the start of his reign as Fire Lord is, again, magnified by the very personal zutara relationship. And we love to see it.

tl;dr zutara isn’t for everyone. Some people just don’t vibe with it. Some are nostalgic. Some love the canon they grew up with. Some have been disappointed for years. Some just see themselves in other characters and want their happiness instead. Whatever the reason, that’s fine. But for me, I love the way these two, from the moment they give each other a fair chance, are able to lower their walls and prejudices to see the other for the kindred spirits they are. They see each other’s humanity, and their response is to pour out love and support and compassion. I love that they’re a power couple in battle. I love the symbolism and, honestly, soulmatism that colors their every interaction. I love that they embody the whole storyline of atla in their relationship and how it develops, which is notably why their seasonal arcs always culminate in each finale with how they relate to one another. I love that zuko adopting a waterbending move is what actually saves his life and then katara’s. I love the chemistry! And I love the future they could’ve had, instead of the ones they were given.

So, in conclusion: I just think they’re neat and I hope you do too, at least a little bit. Even if it’s just respectfully from a disinterested distance cause you do you. And now here is the video I mentioned. I’m sorry this post got so long and then I gave you an even longer homework assignment, but I can’t recommend it enough. She says it all better than I can.

Insight vs. Truth

That’s a distinction that can seem a bit vague at first & maybe lead to confusion.

On the surface “insight” and “truth” sound kinda the same.

It’s often explained by the adage that “type 6 wants fundamental truths while type 5 wants information for its own sake” but - no one wants incorrect/irrelevant information, right? In that sense I also want the truth & certainly would have cited truth as an important value.

But when I say truth I usually use it as a synonym for “objective reality”.

In thinking about it I considered that line in Serial Experiments Lain where Taro has this dialogue about “the truth beyond the truth” - that bit about how “the truth has power because it is the truth” - which power is that? For example, the one to make illusion & falsehood dissapear. That’s truth not just as fact but as opposed to falsehood.

In this sense truth isn’t just “correct information”, its information plus. A ‘higher-vibrational’ version of the normal 6 communication mode where info comes tied with morality or allegiance. Truth in not just correct but its correctness has implications, things that follow from it (for people).

it can be a personal truth also - the enneagrammer peeps have this video where they type this motivation speaker guy as 6, & at one point he outright says “I realized that I am the truth!” where that seems to be meant as being in alignment with himself, his PoV being legitimate.

I guess ultimately it comes down to 6 being a tad more action oriented. They can tie themselves in a knot not knowing what to do, but they actually want to do stuff. So much so there’s this whole superego fear about doing the wrong thing - what if it goes wrong? What if the opposite is true? and all the usual 6 patterns.

Whereas if you have The Truth - even a personal truth - & you act in accordance with that then your actions become right, solid & well-funded too. No need for anxious fretting if your action is based on The Truth.

“Insight” is more like what the kaballah calls “The Vision of Splendor” or the japanese philosophical term “Yugen” (roughly, “profound mystery” or “awareness of the universe”) - you can see how the concept struck me just from the fact that I still remember these terms after coming across them years ago

its described as “reality continuosly unfolding” - if i got this right its what id describe as “how everything fits together in all its interlocking parts”, but the former phrasing certainly catches the ‘ongoing process’ aspect of it.

The cheapest knockoff version of this is probably a nature documentary. It# not per se related to people (though those can be part of it), It’s not to do with action, you sit & watch it & witness everything that makes up a jungle ecosystem or the human body, or the night sky etc. & then later you can recognize the presence of the “parts” in the wild.

& in this maybe it becomes clear how it’s a rare, peak experience, not quite the same ‘insight’ as you get every day reading articles, cause your typical mode is to be focussed on the components, the parts, or the kind of ‘underlying principles’ that are new ways of chopping things into parts...

Whereas The Vision of Splendor is a bigger picture, the parts coming together, the desired end result that you dont quite get to if caught in a loop.

Unlike 9-y holistic vision, its the understanding of the whole that comes specifically from understanding the parts, but its also a counterpole to overrestriction/overfixation on particular aspects, its watching it unfold instead of scrambling to hold it static snapshots... which means that you, too are a moving part.

Though there is probably a commonality in “standing still” to see a moving thing which then itself creates a distortion & thats how you get a withdrawn type. (if your interested in the 9 thing, scroll down to the bottom half of this reply to my recent writeup - in a way thats more something of an exactly complementary/”opposite” view of precisely all that might be spoiled by imposing structure on what you see. - to me its not even apparent that there is such a thing & i might have dismissed it when i was younger, but, ovsly, the 9s are probably not all making this up to pull a prank on us xD... )

perhaps theres an equivalent “standstill trap” for the 4 in that a “true self” is not necessarily a static thing either but im not making a confident ruling here yet

Mbti anon again. I'll try to make the blog when finals are over maybe lol. Also no need to apologize, i enjoyed reading your answer. It was really interesting. I probably should've explained the cognitive functions tho lol bc that's actually the best way to type people😅 this is probably gonna be long sorry

So in mbti, there's cognitive functions. It's how each type processes info, makes judgements and decisions, how they express, etc. There's 8, each type has 4 as their main set and the other 4 are hidden. They can be developed alongside the main set tho; sometimes they show through stress. Introverted functions are internal based, analysis, and reflective(Ni, Ti, Fi, Si). Extroverted functions are external and rely on environment, action oriented(Ne, Te, Fe, Se). N = intuition, T = thinking, F = feeling, S = sensing.

I'll just use Chani bc I'm sure we're both INTJs lol. INTJ stack: Ni - Te - Fi - Se. He has the lame Ni sense of humor lol, he does make some dumb jokes ngl but I still laugh at them. I think it shows well in the way he talks and writes. I can't remember the exact details(which i think is also the case with chani adjdj. Ni is more impressionistic, so yes a lot of INxJs tend to have awful memory lol. Also why i doubt he's ISTJ - ISTJ uses Si, which is reliant on past experiences, structure, more detail oriented, concrete. He can barely remember their bdays lol), but he wrote a letter to hwi on his bday once right? He briefly mentioned their past experiences together and looked more towards their future. Ni is more future oriented. Te is shown through his straightforwardness and how hard working he is. He's pretty much been working his whole life, so I guess that's just natural. His Fi actually seems well developed. He's not angsty or detached, he's honestly...pretty soft. He's very expressionless tho lol, very common with intjs(the amount of times i've been told to smile😑😑 i cant help my rbf). Fi can't be bothered to fake emotions, is a lot more private too. Se is his last, the inferior function(the function that fucks you up until you learn to use it correctly lmao. For me since I also have this, it's being clumsy af and relying on physical things under stress...Se is focused on the environment and 5 senses, so eating too much or spending way too much time on my phone, etc). I don't rly think Chani is clumsy, but he has like...impulsive moments lol. Se is reactive and when chani gets annoyed, he can be physical lol. Also why he's kinda slow lol i'm slow too. I haven't seen him under a lot of stress yet(maybe he has already shown it? I'm still like a new fantasy lol barely 7 months, so i'm sure there's a lot about sf9 i still need to learn)

Honestly there's a lot more...tempted to explain the others but i think this is already too long. I hope this all makes sense. I can explain more if you want or google can lol

Byleth, Hanneman and Manuela herded the students back through the elevator, the atmosphere around them once of absolute shock, understandably so. Claude walked beside the young Professor, his expression serious.

“Hey, Teach, those things you said back there…”

“All true.” Byleth said in a low voice, looking back at the astonished Blue Lions as they made their way out of the large underground.

“I’ll need more than that, Teach, come on. Can we go to your room to talk?” The young man looked back to his lifeless classmates, “there’s too many people around to talk freely.”

Byleth simply shook his head slowly. “On the contrary. I want to talk to all of them -- all of you -- he looked straight to the heir of House Reagan, “at the same time. I can’t allow doubt to be sown right after the truth was revealed.”

“Okay, I understand that much, but you do know that that was a bold statement, right, Teach? Do you have any plans about what to do from now on with all this new knowledge? Lady Rhea was in a rough shape down there, so this is the future of the Church we’re talking about here.”

Pressing his lips into a thin line, Byleth looked away from the inquisitive young man.

“No, no, wait,” Claude let out a nervous smile, patting Byleth’s shoulder carefully. “You didn’t think this through at all did you, Teach?” He snorted, cold sweat rolling down his temple, “I don’t think you know the scale of the scandal you just brought up, man.”

“Believe me, Claude,” Byleth’s voice deepened an octave, making the young man’s hairs stand on end. “I know more than anyone the scale of the things I just said.”

However, it was true that Byleth didn’t have an immediate plan of how to tackle the matters of the Church for the moment -- he simply wished fervently for the truth to be known; for his friend’s suffering to be noticed and grieved instead of glorified that… he was at a loss for the moment.

He had Sothis’ memories, yes, but he was but a human with the consciousness of the Goddess -- his vessel couldn’t hold the almost infinite power the Fell Star had brought along with the records of her life. Meaning he might have had her memories and a faint intent of how she had been leading mankind alongside the Nabateans, but it wasn’t as though Byleth himself had the practical experience of it, so he had to actually think about the consequences of his actions.

He had answered Edelgard’s question about the future of the Church -- it had been a subject that was marinating inside his mind for quite a while as well, though he had never given it proper attention to the development of it to actually see it blossom. There needed to be a reform.

How could one start to dismantle the base of a belief that had been rooted in a nation for centuries? Would he start preaching about the misdeeds that had been perpetuated through generations of Archbishops that were most likely controlled by Rhea from the backstage? Would he be able to uphold such a task at all while still pursuing the true enemies he should be setting his eyes on?

He had promised Sothis he would hunt down the remnants of Those Who Slither in the Dark and he would do so until there was nothing left of them to grieve. But he was only one man. Could he lead the hunt and change the people’s hearts at the same time?

Claude’s single question had made Byleth doubt his entire resolve, to the point that the Professor felt Sothis’ absence even more keenly.

She would have been the one to scold him and bring this subject to light before anyone else. She would be there, pulling his ear inside their shared mindscape to force him to think through his actions and those they affected while still grumbling that she would of course help him throughout it all.

The Professor sighed, shaking his head. “I’ll answer your questions, Claude, but we need to gather everyone-”

“Dear Professor, I don’t think now is a good time, as eager as I know that some of my students are to listen to your explanations.” Manuela approached with a worried look. “The news was too much to take for some of the kids, so I’ll be taking them with me to the infirmary. I think others need their space now more than they need answers to questions they don’t even have yet.” She glanced back at the pack of soulless students. “Give them some time to gather their thoughts and come up with their own questions, okay?”

Hanneman scratched his mustache uncomfortably, not wanting to admit that there were people who could turn away from new knowledge so readily, but agreeing that what a greater part of the students present needed was time to sort their heads. “As it stands, I will have to agree with Manuela on this one. Let us disperse the class and come back at this on Monday, how does that sound?”

“what?” Claude whined from Byleth’s other side. “You want me to wait two days to get the answers I need? Can’t I just go back with Teach and ask the stuff I want to know now?”

“Don’t be selfish, young man. Lead your House back to their quarters; look at how crestfallen they are.” Hanneman scolded his House’s Leader, gesturing with his chin to the Golden Deers’ expressions. Some were so shocked they looked like rag dolls while others were thinking deeply of how such knowledge could affect their lives -- only one or two looked like they were mostly fine with the situation, whichever it would be.

The same could be said about the other two Houses, though perhaps the Blue Lions had taken more damage since Faerghus had always had close ties to the Church, so most of its citizens were devout believers.

Edelgard observed everyone’s reactions carefully, not daring to approach Byleth like Claude did so as not to draw attention to herself. In two days, they would reunite, at the Blue Lions’ classroom, it seemed, so the Imperial Princess had time to think her options through until then.

Thankfully or not, Hubert had returned from the trip to the Empire in record time -- proving that the new teleportation magic they had painstakingly acquired was indeed a necessity for their plans to work properly. Edelgard filled Hubert in on the happenings at the Holy Tomb, urging him to follow her to the Blue Lions’ classroom early on Monday so they could bear witness to how strong Byleth’s resolve was in changing the Church.

Depending on his answer, Edelgard could have the upper hand in the upcoming invasion. She already had much more information than she had ever managed to dig through on her own over the course of her life just by watching that pathetic scene between the wailing Archbishop and the young Professor. Edelgard had had a faint idea of how the Crests came to be, but to think it all was linked to the bodies of the goddess and her children… Amusing.

The classroom, although usually on the empty side since it was rather large for the small amount of students it usually had, soon became packed with people from the other two Houses. There were plenty of places to sit at, of course, but Edelgard and Hubert chose to stand close to the door anyway, wanting to look over the students’ reactions to the Professor’s answers.

“As all of you are aware, we’ve gathered here to clear up any misunderstandings you might have had after that happening at the Holy Tomb.” Hanneman placed himself in the middle of the teacher’s desk, looking over the students’ eyes. “We all know how sudden everything was, so don’t be afraid to speak up and we’ll do our best to give you satisfying answers.”

“So you knew it all, Professor Hanneman. How didn’t you break after I spent the whole day asking you about it… Should I have haunted you in your sleep too? I know how well that would’ve ended…” Linhardt muttered from the front seat, a place he would usually never take but quickly took due to the severity of the situation.

“Believe me, lad, it was a living nightmare, as I made it clear for the past 30 times.” Hanneman exhaled in exhaustion, taking a step to the side to allow for Byleth to take the center of the stage. “The Professor here is the one who has the core knowledge of it all, so Manuela and I shall monitor the questions: raise your hand if you want to ask something and we will make a tally.”

Several hands filled the space, followed by a furious scribbling from the part of the two older professors, each taking into account the students of their own Houses while Byleth memorized the Blue Lions. Evidently, the first one to get the question was Claude.

“Can you tell us in detail about the origin of the Hero’s Relics and the Crests Stones? Are they related to the Crests per se at all? And-”

“One question at a time, lad, be patient!” Hanneman interrupted his House Leader, raising both palms in a placating manner. “We have all day to answer everything you all want, but one person at a time, alright?”

Flashing a dissatisfied pout, Claude crossed his legs under the table. “Yeah, alright. So?”

Byleth took a deep breath. “As I said before, the Hero’s Relics are weapons made out of the bones of the Children of the Goddess -- the Nabateans as they called themselves at the time.”

“Nabateans…” Claude muttered under his breath, nodding his head as though he understood. The name was murmured all over the students’ mouths, though Byleth hadn’t stopped speaking yet.

“The Goddess descended into the world and created the Nabateans from her own blood -- then they all started to impart their knowledge on the humans to help them prosper.” The Professor spoke as though talking about a legend, though all of the present were aware of the true myth passed along the religious carols, and it differed greatly from what he was saying. “Some humans started to feel intimidated by how powerful the Nabateans were and waged war upon war against them, wanting to topple the beings they saw as gods… But such wars nearly destroyed the world.

“Some of the defeated humans left bearing a large grudge, promising revenge, but Sothis had to focus her powers on healing the land instead, leaving it to her children to look for the stragglers. Some of them never returned, being the first prey to the experiments of Those Who Slither in the Dark.”

Edelgard’s hand twitched inside her crossed arms at the mention of the experiments as she narrowed her eyes.

Byleth continued. “Exhausted from healing the land, Sothis had no choice but to leave the land to her Children and retire to the place we saw as the Holy Tomb to rest and regain her energy -- but it was then that the tragedy of the Red Canyon happened: The enemy ambushed the weakened Nabateans, killing them with weapons made out of the blood and bones of their siblings, using these very same weapons to kill Sothis and forge,” Byleth took his sword out of his belt, “the Sword of the Creator.”

“Bloody hell,” Claude leaned on his chair, digesting all of that information. Ignatz was holding his chest as though in physical pain, tears clouding his vision -- and the same could be said about Marianne and Mercedes, being comforted by their closest friends.

“Through the experiments, the enemies realized that they could acquire the power of the Nabateans by drinking their blood -- and that was how the power known as ‘Crests’ were bestowed to the humans who weren’t born from the Goddess. It is also the ancient Nabateans’ crystalized blood that composes the rare Crests Stones -- it’s because of them that the Crest-bearers can wield the Hero’s Relics… Though I should leave the technical details to Hanneman here, if you all are interested.” He took a step back to allow the Crestologist his five minutes of fame.

“Well, as you all know…” Hanneman adjusted his monocle, picking up a piece of chalk to start writing on the board.

Manuela nudged Byleth’s shoulder, “are you sure about this? He’s gonna keep talking all day.”

“It’s fine, I just think he’s better at explaining the relationship between the Crests Stones and the Crest bearers. Besides, no one’s complaining.”

“For now, at least.” Manuela shrugged.

Byleth gave an once over around the classroom, his eyes meeting the Imperial Princess’ by the door. After she had made that radical-sounding comment at the Holy Tomb, the young woman had been oddly silent. Now, however, she looked paler than usual, as a frown covered her brow.

“Don’t you think Edelgard is behaving a bit strangely?”

Manuela glanced at her House’s Leader, looking back at Byleth. “She had been grumpy ever since I had to revoke her permission to return to the Empire, so I suppose it might still be about that?”

The young Professor narrowed his eyes, still in a staring contest with the Imperial Princess. “I’ll go ask her what’s wrong.”

“Wha- Byleth!” Manuela pulled his sleeve, whispering gravely, “if you leave, it will truly turn into a Hanneman-only class, you know!”

“Don’t worry, I’m only going to talk to her; I’m not going anywhere.” He flashed something akin to a smile, patting his colleague’s hand before circling through the desks towards the door by which Edelgard stood. “You seemed to be interested in the explanation I was giving earlier. Do you have anything to ask?”

Edelgard shifted her weight to one leg, looking up at the tall young man. “Only one thing: How do you plan to handle this situation with the Church? The power of the Nabateans can no longer rule over the humans, but right at the heart of this Monastery, lies the strongest one of them… She’s not mentally stable, either. What do you plan to do?”

“I’ll protect Rhea from whatever I can. It’s the least I can do to fulfill a promise.” Byleth replied without hesitation, though looked to the surly Hubert beside Edelgard before continuing, “there is much to be done in regards to the distribution of information, but first I’ll have to deal with Those Who Slither-”

“Enough. That is all I needed to hear.” Edelgard turned on her heel to leave. “It is a shame, Professor. I thought that we could have been allies in this.” She muttered as her white hair fluttered behind her small figure.

Hubert shook his head in disapproval. “To think there was so much potential. Perhaps later you’ll realize the true meaning of your statements, Professor, though by then it might be too late,” he smiled derisively before following his liege, leaving a suspicious Byleth behind.

What was the true meaning of Edelgard’s question? Byleth had so much to think about, he could barely sort his thoughts by himself, missing his mindmate so very dearly each time he felt overwhelmed.

Sighing, the young Professor turned back to the classroom filled with Hanneman’s voice, clenching his fists to resolve himself. One step at a time. First he would clear the students’ doubts, then he would think about what to do next.

If only he had the power to see what was going to happen instead of being able to go back a few moments in time… Perhaps then he would’ve been able to predict the preemptive strike the Empire would deal to the Monastery a few weeks from then.

these are just for fun and fitting any character (or person for that matter) into a box is tough. made a couple guesses here and there since there are still elements of these characters we know nothing about but we’ll see what happens

charlie - ENFJ (FeNiSeTi):

charlie’s entire character motivation is helping other demons and making them into better people (Fe). the hotel is an important project to her and she’s put a lot of heart into making it a reality that people will be interested in (Ni). even though new info is able to shake her up, she’s still capable of processing and working with sudden changes (Se), but she isn’t always 100% honest with herself or other people when it comes to logic and thinking things through (Ti).

angel dust - ESFP (SeFiTeNi):

angel is very quick on his feet and absorbs outside information rapidly (Se). he also is intensely emotional but tends to internalize his feelings (Fi). he’s good at using info he’s gathered to implement practical solutions when he wants to (Te) but often has a twisted and regressive way of thinking (Ni).

vaggie - ISTJ (SiTeFiNe):

vaggie is very straight-laced and skeptical and doesn’t want to go too far outside of her comfort zone (Si). she also sets about thinking things through once a goal (e.g. the hotel) has been established so that she find find a practical way to go about things (Te). she’s honest with her emotions, though not open with them (Fi), and is strictly averse to taking risks, such as working with alastor (Ne).

alastor - ESTP (SeTiFeNi):

alastor is great at making sure he has access to the upper hand by keeping an eye on what’s going on around him (Se). he seems to enjoy questioning things just for the sake of his own entertainment (Ti) but is also capable of manipulating others’ moods and emotions through his own natural charisma and understanding of what makes others tick (Fe). while he seems to have a plan in mind, it’s likely that it’s got a hole or two in it that he doesn’t know about yet and will come back to bite him in the ass later (Ni).

husk - INTJ (NiTeFiSe):

anyways, husk spends a lot of time in his own head and is more concerned with going through the motions of his responsibilities while drowning in his own neuroses than anything else (Ni). he doesn’t seem interested in dissecting ideas, he’s a little more on the practical side and would rather have an end goal so he doesn’t have to intellectualize too much (Te). he represses his own positive emotions so much that he tells other people he doesn’t have them (Fi) and is stubborn, reacting angrily when thrust into a new situation (Se).

niffty - ISFJ (SiFeTiNe):

niffty seems rather preoccupied with doing things properly and comfortably holds 1950′s social views regarding constructs such as gender roles; she seems content living and working as she always has (Si). she’s also very interested in making friends and taking care of people, and seems eager to please (Fe). she might be a bit on the neurotic side and can get into her own head (Ti), and she might have issues when it comes to adjusting how she thinks about the world around her (Ne).

cherri bomb - ESFP (SeFiTeNi):

pretty much the same as angel, though she applies Fi differently in the sense that she doesn’t so much hide her own emotions as naturally consider them private and not feel the need to share them with anyone but herself.

sir pentious - ESTJ (TeSiNeFi):

pentious is extremely devoted to his goals, the foremost of which is of taking over hell, and spends lots of time figuring out how he’s gonna do that (Te). he's methodical and sets out with a plan (though he’s easily thrown off course) (Si). he’s an inventor so he has new ideas all the time (Ne) and as we’ve seen, he seems to experience difficulty empathizing with or understanding others, including the egg bois and other characters; he’s too focused on his own emotions (Fi).

redguards dont really have armies, per se. they have different knightly orders, which are technically under the rule of the high king, but in practice function more like mercenary companies with very strict codes of honor. i imagine there is a system in hammerfell similar to morrowind's morag tong: a system of legal contracted murder through these knightly orders.

each order has unique cultures and fighting styles. in a way you could compare them to morrowind's houses, as they also possess great political influence. there's even a similar divide between two major political ideologies: the crowns (a more traditional idea of the culture) and the forebears (a more progressive ideal favoring cooperation with the empire/other neighbors).

i’d say a lot of redguard culture, especially this martial culture, is largely the result of two men’s legacies: frandar hunding and gaiden shinji. (no, i really don’t have a clue about shinji’s name. it’s a very clearly japanese-derived name for a man from a very clearly arabic/egyptian/subsaharan african based culture. perhaps he got the name from akavir, which is more known for japanese influence? we don’t seem to have much info on him beyond his founding of the arena and role in the siege of orsinium, so perhaps he had traveled to akavir (learned some of his combat philosophies there?) or may even be one of the tsaesci men.)

and then there’s hunding, known for writing the book of circles, which almost seems like a bible/quran to the redguards. there’s a lot of really interesting quotes in that book, too many for me to really list here. he’s also somehow responsible for/tied up in whatever happened to yokuda. he seems to have been a vital part of a lot of the devastation there, but not necessarily its “sinking.” i want to say he led a bunch of sword-singers to hammerfell (or highrock?) before the majority of the yokudans fled.

again, im not so sure what i think about what happened to yokuda. i think the whole “pankratosword” - which i think is literally somehow intended to mean splitting atoms with swords - is probably kind of ridiculous. i think there’s some actual evidence for the whole hiradirge sword-singers somehow destroying yokuda, but it’s in eso, so im not really familiar with it. im more inclined to look at it a bit more realistically - maybe yokuda’s “sinking under the sea” wasn’t really literal. maybe the leadership vacuum after the war and hunding’s subsequent exile, on top of the overall costs of the war in terms of lives and resources, may have caused yokuda to simply not be a sustainable place anymore, leading its people to flee and seek new homes.

it’s definitely somewhat ironic that they exiled hunding, and then almost certainly ended up having to follow him. (i think there might also be a correlation between hunding and nerevar, but i’m mostly saying that bc both are obviously war criminals, lol.)

look, i think there’s a lot of similarities between the redguards and the dunmer. i’d say the redguards are almost certainly like the men’s equivalent of the dunmer. but there’s also the question: how did the redguards end up so vastly different culturally not only from their fellow men, but also from just about every other race of tamriel? they’re even almost more similar to what little we know of akavir than to the other men and mer. (almost makes me wonder: was yokuda the eastern coast of akavir? we don’t know a lot about akavir, and we know even less the further east you go. maybe yokuda was the sort of wrap-around portion of akavir, so far east it’s west. but i don’t really have much proof for this.)

Explanation of cognitive functions

Hongjoong: INFJ (Ni - Fe - Ti - Se)

Ni (introverted intuition) is focused on long term goals and planning. Hongjoong has always been very passionate about his music. He even skipped school sometimes just to work on it. He's constantly striving towards his goal of becoming an inspirational artist, influencing the world and society with his thoughtful and meaningful music. He even had a laptop with so much music in it, completely prepared to show them to the world until it was unfortunately stolen and the songs were deleted.

Fe (extroverted feeling) is focused on the feelings of others. Hongjoong definitely cares and looks after the others so much that he tends to forget about himself. With Ni - Fe, he has made it his goal to inspire others through his music, serve as a role model. He also spreads awareness of social issues through projects like Polished Men, Dear Heart, BLM, etc

Ti (introverted thinking) is a very logical and analytical function that picks apart info in order to keep consistent data for self. I don't see him use that much other than him saying he doesn't really understand his own emotions. He may be comfortable using Ti a bit more than Fe sometimes.

Se (extroverted sensing) uses the 5 senses in order to perceive the world. Very present minded and realistic. Being Hongjoong's inferior, he is sometimes clumsy. And according to Wooyoung, Hongjoong often struggles to keep up with daily life. Has an interest in fashion and arts.

Seonghwa: ISFJ (Si - Fe - Ti - Ne)

Si (introverted sensing) takes details from the external world and recreates a detailed internal world. Seonghwa is clearly very neat and tidy, as Si needs structure. Si also prefers familiarity, which is why Hwa can be a bit reserved and in a way, traditional (e.g warning Wooyoung about formalities when he was talking to Stray Kids' Changbin on Kingdom lol). He also couldn't bring himself to informally address Jessi on Showterview despite having a casual talk segment. Only dom/aux Si people would be that bothered by something that different tbh.

Fe - Like Hongjoong, Hwa uses his Fe in order to act as a caretaker for others. He's sensitive to other's emotions. Fe is sometimes a mirror, so may be why Hwa can act "weird" - he just understands the energy of the environment and tries to match it.

Ti - Seonghwa can make deductions and piece information together sometimes

Ne - Seems like he's been more comfortable using this lately. Hwa is natually quiet and a bit shy, but he may have gotten more comfortable to say/do goofy things. Other than that, I haven't really seen him name any ideas he has, making new ideas from patterns and connections, etc

Yunho: ENTP (Ne - Ti - Fe - Si)

Ne (extroverted intuition) is all about future possibilities and outcomes. Yunho is very creative, often coming up with many ideas for different situations. He definitely has the Ne goofiness and optimism. He's very Ne-Fe so he's constantly showing a positive silly side to everyone.

Ti - Evaluates and analyzes his ideas. Ti may be why he's sometimes a bit uncomfortable with very emotional situations. E.g when Hwa was talking about his rib injury onstage and got teary, Yunho didn't really get why he was being so emotional. If his Fe was aux or dom, he would have likely quickly understood why Hwa was crying instead of being confused.

Fe - Yunho's Fe seems quite developed and likely why he scored as an ENFJ. However, I don't see him using Ni - Se. He's definitely not very shy and is receptive to other's feelings. He's fun and charming, overall very likeable and friendly energy. Having Ne - Fe though, he seems to try and keep a happy face a lot, even when something has bothered him. Ne is often optimistic, Fe doesn't want to cause conflict

Si - Seems to be a bit sentimental. Also tendency to relate to things in his past experiences, like events, childhood, etc.

Also due to demon Se (ENTP's shadow function; inferior's inferior function), it is probably why he thinks his anger is his weakness and may feel really emotionally impulsive if he's not careful. May also explain his clumsiness...he has so many stories related to injuries (e.g breaking his nose on the bus, hitting his head on the fish tank and breaking it, etc)

Yeosang: INTP (Ti - Ne - Si - Fe)

Ti - Makes Yeosang really private and internalized. Also may be why he's blunt; most Ti users are just naturally straightforward. He also has great deduction skills.

Ne - Witty jokes and can easily connect patterns externally. Ne comes up the ideas and helps his Ti connect the details and figure out possible answers for a situation. This was definitely prominent in their salary lupin series, in ep 7.

Si - Keeps tracks of details, can easily pick up routine. Likely why he can pick up choreo quite easily.

Fe - As the inferior function, Yeosang may just say what he wants without thinking of the impact on others. Although he does seem aware of his bluntness, so he's not purposely being mean - that's just how he is. Doesn't like worrying others, only going to Hongjoong for help.

San: ISFP (Fi - Se - Ni - Te)

Fi (introverted feeling) is focused on their own feelings, values, and morals. San is sentimental and emotional. He also judges people by their character, no matter their status. He also advocates for people to have their own goals amd values, to just basically be yourself and live for yourself instead of going along with what others want.

Se - San's quick reactions and flexibility. He's also so captivating on stage with the way he peforms.

Ni - Seems to think of future implications of things. E.g gifting someone an item and wondering how much the person will like it. Also has always been passionate about music, always wanted to be a singer since childhood

Te - Ni + Te makes him push forward toward his future goals. San constantly improves as an artist and as a performer

Mingi: ESFP (Se - Fi - Te - Ni)

Se - Love for fashion, only thinking of the moment and not the future consequences. Always wants to try new things now in order to gain the experience and reference it for the future.

Fi - Wants to be his authentic self, wants to truly express himself. Can be seen in the unique yet creative fashion styles, his lyricism, and rapping style

Te - Goes for what he wants. Fi + Te makes him work hard to truly make a name for himself. Mingi wants to be recognized for who he is

Ni - Has a few long goals here and there, but Mingi truly does live in the moment. Admitted he didn't really understand the future implications of being an idol, yet here he is, working hard to show what skills he has

Wooyoung: ESFP (Se - Fi - Te - Ni)

Se - Both him and Mingi have the "loud" and physical sense of humor. They are both amazing dancers as well, being able to use their bodies well and know to exude a particular energy of the performance. Also quite hyper

Fi - Wooyoung wants to focus on being the best version of himself. Likes praise for what he does. Always expresses his honest feelings (e.g not being afraid to show when he's bothered. Has called out some rude "fans" on their socials. Fe likely wouldn't say anything or sugar coat it a bit as Fe doesn't want to cause conflict. Fi won't stand for it though and does not mind expressing their true thoughts if it bothers them a lot.)

Te - Can nag and is very straight forward. Like many Te users, what he wants, he goes for it.

Ni - long term in wanting to be his best self

Jongho: ISTJ (Si - Te - Fi - Ne)

Si - Makes Jongho quite reserved and observant. Compared to the others, he's a lot more calm

Te - He's good at organizing people and leading when he needs to(Salary lupin is a good example). He is the oldest sibling in his family too, so I'm sure it comes to him naturally

Fi - Si + Fi makes him very reserved. Fi is generally more private compared to Fe. Not the most openly affectionate type either - especially as his tertiary - which San has called him out on lol.

Ne - Has the playful nature of Ne at times. Ne also helped his Te come up with and execute the idea of the fake kiss mission in order to not have the other members sabotage his real mission. His Si knew and figured his members wouldn't let him complete his mission peacefully, so he needed to figure out a way to do so.

Review of the Surface Book 3 for Developers

I was offered a Surface Book 3 to use as a loaner over the the last 5 weeks. I did a short video teaser on Twitter where I beat on the device with a pretty ridiculous benchmark - running Visual Studio 2019 while running Gears of War and Ubuntu under WSL and Windows Terminal. I have fun. ;)

Size and Weight

My daily driver has been a Surface Book 2 since 2017. The new Surface Book 3 is the exact size (23mm thick as a laptop) and weight (3.38 and 4.2 lbs.) as the SB2. I have had to add a small sticker to one otherwise I'd get them confused. The display resolutions are 3000×2000 for the 13.5-inch model and 3240×2160 for the 15-inch one that I have. I prefer a 15" laptop. I don't know how you 13" people do it.

Basically if you are a Surface Book 2 user the size and weight are the same. The Surface Book 3 is considerably more power in the same size machine.

CPU and Memory

They gave me an i7-1065G7 CPU to test. It bursts happily over 3.5 Ghz (see the compiling screenshot below) and in my average usage hangs out in the 2 to 1.8 range with no fan on. I regularly run Visual Studio 2019, VS Code, Teams, Edge (new Edge, the Chromium one), Ubuntu via WSL2, Docker Desktop (the WSL2 one), Gmail and Outlook as PWAs, as well as Adobe Premiere and Audition and other parts of the Creative Suite. Memory usually sits around 14-18 gigs unless I'm rendering something big.

It's a 10th gen Intel chip and as the Surface Book 3 can detach the base from the screen, it's both a laptop and tablet. I gleaned from Anandatech that TDP is between 10 and 25W (usually 15W) depends on what is needed, and it shifts frequencies very fast. This is evident in the great battery life when doing things like writing this blog post or writing in Edge or Word (basically forever) versus playing a AAA game or running a long compile, building containers, or rendering a video in Premiere (several hours).

FLIP THE SCREEN AROUND? You can also when docked even reverse the screen! Whatever do you mean? It's actually awesome if you want an external keyboard.

All this phrased differently? It's fast, quickly, when it needs to be but it's constantly changing the clock to maximize power/thermals/battery.

SSD - Size and Speed

The device I was loaned has a Toshiba KXG60PNV2T04 Hard Drive 2TB NVMe M.2 that's MASSIVE. I'm used to 512G or maaybe a 1TB drive in a Laptop. I'm getting used to never having to worry about space. Definitely 1TB minimum these days if you want to play games AND do development.

I ran a CrystalBenchmark on the SSD and it did 3.2GB/s sequential reads! Sweet. I feel like the disk is not the bottleneck with my development compile tests below. When I consulted with the Surface team last year during the conception of the Surface Book 3 I pushed them for faster SSDs and I feel that they delivered with this 2TB SSD.

GPU - Gaming and Tensorflow

The 13.5-inch model now comes with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 Max-Q GPU with 4GB of GDDR5 memory in its Core i7 variant, while the 15-inch unit features a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti Max-Q with 6GB of GDDR6 memory. When running the Gears 5 Benchmark while plugged in (from the Extras menu, Benchmark) is has no issues with the default settings doing 60fps for 90% of the benchmark with a few dips into the 57 range depending what's on screen.

It's not a gaming machine, per se, but it does have a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti so I'm basically able to 1080p 60fps AAA games. I've played Destiny 2, Gears of War 5, and Call of Duty Modern Warfare on default settings at 60 fps without issue. The fan does turn on but it's very manageable. I like that whenever we get back into hotels I'll be able to play some games and develop on the same machine. The 15" also includes an Xbox Wireless Adapter so I just paired my controller with it directly.

I was also able to run Tensorflow with CUDA on the laptop under Windows and it worked great. I ran a model against some video footage from my dashcam and 5.1 gigs of video RAM was used immediately and the CUDA engine on the 1660Ti is visible working in Taskman. The commercial SKU has an NVIDIA Quadro RTX 3000 that is apparently even more tuned for CUDA work.

Developer Performance

When I built my Intel i9 Ultimate Desktop 3.0 machine and others, I like to do compile tests to get a sense of how much you can throw at machine. I like big project compiles because they are a combination of a lot of disk access and a lot of parallel CPU work. However, some projects do have a theoretical maximum compile speed because of the way the dependences flesh out. I like to use Orchard Core for benchmarks.

Orchard Core is a fully-featured CMS with 143 projects loaded into Visual Studio. MSBUILD and .NET Core supports both parallel and incremental builds.

A warm build of Orchard Core on IRONHEART my i9 desktop takes just under 10 seconds.

My 6 year old Surface Pro 3 builds it warm in 62 seconds.

A totally cold build (after a dotnet clean) on IRONHEART takes 33.3 seconds.

My Surface Pro 3 builds it cold in 2.4 minutes.

I'll do the same build on both my Surface Book 2 and this new Surface Book 3 to compare. I've excluded the source folders from Defender as well as msbuild.exe and dotnet.exe. I've also turned off the Indexer.

A cold build (after a dotnet clean) on this Surface Book 3 takes 46 seconds.

A warm build is 16.1 seconds

A cold build (after a dotnet clean) on my Surface Book 2 takes 115 seconds.

It's WAY faster than my Surface Book 2 which has been my daily driver when mobile for nearly 3 years!

Benchmarks are all relative and there's raw throughput, there's combination benchmarks, and all kinds of things that can "make a chart." I just do benchmarks that show if I can do a thing I did before, faster.

You can also test various guesses if you have them by adding parameters to dotnet.exe. For example, perhaps you're thinking that 143 projects is thrashing to disk so you want to control how many CPUs are used. This has 4 physical cores and 8 logical, so we could try pulling back a little

dotnet build /maxcpucount:4

The result with Orchard Core is the same, so there is likely a theoretical max as to how fast this can build today. If you really want to go nuts, try

dotnet build -v diag

And dig through ALL the timing info!

Webcam Quality

Might be odd to add this as its own section but we're all using our webcams constantly right now. I was particularly impressed with the front-facing webcam. A lot of webcams are 720p with mediocre white balance. I do a lot of video calls so I notice this stuff. The SB3 has a 1080p front camera for video and decent light pickup. When using the Camera app you can do up to 5MP (2560x1920) which is cool. Here's a pic from today.

Ports and Power and Sound and Wi-Fi

The Surface Book 3 has just one USB-C port on the right side and two USB 3.1 Gen 2s on the left. I'd have liked one additional USB-C so I could project on stage and still have one additional USB-C available...but I don't know what for. I just want one more port. That said, the NEW Surface Dock 2 adds FOUR USB-C ports, so it's not a big deal.

It was theoretically possible to pull more power on the SB2 than its power supply could offer. While I never had an issue with that, I've been told by some Destiny 2 players and serious media renderers that it could happen. With the SB3 they upped the power supply with 65W for the base 13.5-inch version and a full 127W for the 15-inch SKUs so that's not an issue any more.

I have only two Macs for development and I have no Thunderbolt devices or need for an eGPU so I may not be the ideal Thunderbolt consumer. I haven't needed it yet. Some folks have said that it's a bummer the SB3 doesn't have it but it hasn't been an issue or sticking point for any of my devices today. With the new Surface Dock 2 (below) I have a single cable to plug in that gives me two 4k monitors at 60Hz, lots of power, 4 USB-C ports all via the Dock Connector.

I also want to touch on sound. There is a fan inside the device and if it gets hot it will run. If I'm doing 1080p 60fps in Call of Duty WarZone you can likely hear the fan. It comes and goes and while it's audible when the fan is on, when the CPU is not maxed out (during 70% of my work day) the Surface Book 3 is absolutely silent, even when running the monitors. The fan comes on with the CPU is bursting hard over 3Ghz and/or the GPU is on full blast.

One other thing, the Surface Book 3 has Wi-Fi 6 even though I don't! I have a Ubnt network and no Wi-Fi 6 mesh points. I haven't had ANY issues with the Wi-Fi on this device over Ubnt mesh points. When copying a 60 gig video file over Wi-Fi from my Synology NAS I see sustained 280 megabit speeds.

The New Surface Dock - Coming May 26th

I'm also testing a pre-release Surface Dock 2. I suspect they wanted me to test it with the Surface Book 3...BUT! I just plugged in every Surface I have to see what would happen.

My wife has a Surface Laptop 2 she got herself, one son has my 6 year old old Surface Pro 3 while the other has a Surface Go he got with his allowance. (We purchased these over the last few years.) As such we have three existing Surface Docks (original) - One in the kids' study/playroom, one in the Kitchen as a generalized docking station for anyone to drop in to, and one in my office assigned me by work.

We use these individual Surfaces (varying ages, sizes, and powers) along with my work-assigned Surface Book 2 plus this loaner Surface Book 3, so it's kind of a diverse household from a purely Surface perspective. My first thought was - can I use all these devices with the new Dock? Stuff just works with a few caveats for older stuff like my Surface Pro 3.

RANDOM NOTE: What happens when you plug a Surface Pro 3 (released in 2014) into a Surface Dock 2? Nothing, but it does get power. However, the original Surface Dock is great and still runs 4096 x 2160 @30Hz or 2960 x 1440 @60Hz via mini DisplayPort so the Pro 3 is still going strong 6 years out and the kids like it.

So this Surface Dock 2 replaces the original Dock my office. The Surface Dock 2 has

2x front-facing USB-C ports (I use these for two 4k monitors)

2x rear-facing USB-C ports

2x rear-facing USB-A 3.2 (10Gbps) ports

1x Gigabit Ethernet port

1x 3.5mm audio in/out port

Kensington lock slot - I've never used this

First, that's a lot of USB-C. I'm not there yet with the USB-C lifestyle, but I did pick up two USB-C to full-size DisplayPort cables at Amazon and I can happily report that I can run both my 4k monitors at 60hz plus run the main Surface Book 3 panel. The new Dock and its power supply can push 120 watts of power to the Surface with a total of 199 watts everything connected to the dock. I've got a few USB-C memory sticks and one USB-C external hard drive, plus the Logitech Brio is USB 3, so 6 total ports is fine with 4 free after the two monitors. I also Gigabit wired the whole house so I use the Ethernet port quite happily.

Initially I care about one thing - my 4k monitors. Using the USB-C to DisplayPort cables I plugged the dock into two Dell P2715Q 4ks and they work! I preferred using the direct cables rather than any adapters, but I also tested a USB-C to HDMI 2.0 adapter I got in 2018 with some other Dell monitors in the house and that worked with the Surface Book 3 as it had previously with the Book 2.

SURPRISE NOTE: How does the super-thin Surface Pro X do when plugged into a Surface Dock 2? Amazing. It runs two 4k monitors at 60 Hz. I don't know why I was shocked, it's listed on the support page. It's a brand new device, but it's also the size and weight of an iPad so I was surprised. It's a pretty amazing little device - I'll do another post on just the ARM-based Surface Pro X another time.

One final thing about the new Dock. The cable is longer! The first dock had a cable that was about 6" too short and now it's not. It's the little things and in this case, a big thing that makes a Dock that much nicer to use.

Conclusion

All in all, I'm very happy with this Surface Book 3 having been an existing Surface Book 2 user. It's basically 40-50% faster, the video card is surprisingly capable. The SSD is way faster at the top end. It's a clear upgrade over what I had before, and when paired with the Surface Dock 2 and two 4k monitors it's a capable developer box for road warriors or home office warriors like myself.

Size and Weight

Basically if you are a Surface Book 2 user the size and weight are the same. The Surface Book 3 is considerably more power in the same size machine.

CPU and Memory

FLIP THE SCREEN AROUND? You can also when docked even reverse the screen! Whatever do you mean? It's actually awesome if you want an external keyboard.

All this phrased differently? It's fast, quickly, when it needs to be but it's constantly changing the clock to maximize power/thermals/battery.

Okie dokie, a long post about Commodities. This is not rigorous scholarship, history is not my field, I knew nothing about this subject before, really. It’s just a quick google. So, without further ado.

“Well, there was this one time I dropped anchor near a small island called Gorée…”

Gorée Island is a small island off the coast of Senegal which played a part in the transatlantic slave trade. The House of Slaves and the Door of No Return, now a museum and UNESCO World Heritage Site, was built in the 18th century. There are so many different estimations of how many people passed through Gorée and different analyses on how important it was to the trade. However, it is important now, and now is when the series was made. It’s a name that carries connotations of not only the lives directly affected by the slave trade then but the continuing repercussions that we’re still seeing and still understanding. There’s an annual festival, “a way to use art and culture to remember [the sad page in history] and to unite the island's diaspora… it is not enough to remember the past, but that it must be used to build a better future in which communities can grow closer to eliminate all forms of discrimination”, (Augustin Senghor, the mayor of Gorée Island, speaking in 2010 about the festival). The Facebook page for the festival says

“Le Gorée Diaspora Festival est un ciment fédérateur entre la Communauté Sénégalaise à travers Gorée et l’ensemble des visages et voix de la diaspora Africaine s’engageant à « rectifier voire inverser les conséquences négatives de l’esclavage et du lourd tribu payé par le continent noir et ses enfants sous le vocable de Renaissance Africaine qui englobe la notion de Développement que l’Afrique n’a pu connaître du fait, justement, de l’esclavage”

I don’t speak French but I can translate a little… the Gorée Diaspora festival is… something about unifying the Senegalese communities through different voices…. Something about reversing and counteracting the consequences of the slave trade, something about a heavy tribute (price?) paid by the ‘children’ of the continent and the diaspora, and includes ideas about the development that Africa could not know because of the slave trade. My dudes, je ne parle pas Francais, so do correct me or translate better.

The Gorée Institute promotes culture and arts in Africa and in 2015 (I think) they ran a poetry residency on the island that aimed “to reignite a literary tradition that has begun to fade, and to help promote arts, culture, and freedom of expression as intrinsically effective methods of fostering open societies in the region”

Ok. So, these are a few facts I’ve come up with after a quick Google around, and a few things that are coming out of Gorée today. Back to the series, Bonnaire name drops an island that would have already been involved in the slave trade in the 17th century. The thing about the transatlantic trade was that even when not trading people, trade was deeply involved in slaving. The transatlantic triangle meant that cargo was being shipped to pay for slaves and nurture ties in Africa and supply the colonial settlements, a cargo of people was then shipped to the Americas, then the produce of the Americas was shipped to Europe. Paul Munier, as a trader, was as implicated in the trade as Bonnaire, just a different side of the triangle. His cargo might not have been people, but it would have been from the Americas and in all probability produced by the people taken on Bonnaire’s slave ships. The name-drop, then, is suggestive of the slave trade and brings up a whole host of connotations and connections.

I suppose it was probably put in to suggest to an audience that Bonnaire is a slaver, as a ‘clue’. I think it works beyond that, though. It is also, because of what the island is now, suggestive of a diaspora, and the series brings in Samara, and Porthos, people who are perhaps part of a diaspora (I am not naming Sylvie because her story never brushes on her… what is it Bonnaire calls it? Ah. Here we go: “ancestry”). I don’t know what else is within that allusion, probably many things, but I just wanted to pick up the casual reference and think about it.

I just want to quickly pick up on this allusion, mostly because it is used to make musical instruments and you know, I like music. So. I’m just gonna share a couple of things I found. Last allusion I’m picking up, I swear, and again I’ll be quick about it. John J. McCusker says that “rum and molasses early became strategic items in the vital trade with the West Indies, being readily available and readily acceptable returns for colonial goods shipped there. The distilling of rum from molasses created a substantial colonial industry, employing local capital, management skills, and labor[sic]”. Bonnaire’s rum is again just an indication of both his trade and the deeper implications. Rum is a ‘commodity’ (a word McCusker uses over and over that I can’t hear without wincing anymore) that was used substantially in the transantlantic trade. Again, the commodities and luxuries that Bonnaire is shipping, his cargo, is all implicated in the slave trade and, again, I want to point out Paul Munier as a trader who might not actively be a slaver but is still part of the slave trade.

FINALLY I want to just mention how confused I am by Louis and Richelieu and their conversation about the navy. I always read that as the French didn’t have a navy, and had a trade agreement with Spain about exploration/colonisation. I can’t find any evidence for this, however, and in fact Richelieu pretty much is the source of the modern French navy; he built the damn thing. And in terms of colonization, while it seems to be true that the French in 1630 were only just starting really, they WERE starting. Richelieu [historical type not Capaldi] went on to colonize the Antilles, and the French navy took Gorée from the Dutch in… 1677. David Gegus says that “for the little-studied seventeenth century, some data recently uncovered by Clarence Munford and others are combined with material from older works by Elizabeth Donnan, Abdoulaye Ly, and John Barbot. The compilers note, however, ‘much of the seventeenth century French traffic is missing.’ A large part of France's slave trading was then clandestine, conducted by interlopers challenging royal monopoly companies”. Which seems to fit in with Bonnaire’s position with the court. Richelieu actually set up a Company of San-Christophe with an explorer called Pierre Belain d'Esnambuc in approx. 1626 (“I found myself my own little utopia, a little piece of heaven called San Christophe”). [‘San-Christophe’ is ‘Saint Kitts’]. The company failed, d’Esnambuc died, Richelieu set up the Company of One Hundred Associates instead and they colonised Canada, the Antilles, etc.

mm yeah okay so most people say intp or intj or something cause thats the intp/j stereotype right? intj is immediately out of the question bc sherlock very obviously thinks in Ti not Te. he also displays so many Se traits like he’s super impulsive obviously but also in the way he makes observations. an argument could be made for Ne i suppose? but still definitely more istp’s Se than intp’s Ne. and his thinking style is collect data, then organize and draw conclusions based on that info? that’s like textbook Ni.
