thoughts on 5x03
- this episode is a straight-up BUMMER, and it’s weird because usually when high school shows do a graduation episode there is at least some sense of optimism to it - like yes, things are changing, and in some ways that’s sad, but in other ways it’s exciting and new and right. this episode has absolutely none of that. it’s just bummer after bummer after bummer
- as such, i feel like i don’t actually have a lot to comment on? there are relatively few wild / outrageous things going on in this episode. i spent the whole episode with a pit in my stomach. it was not enjoyable to watch.
- but ok let’s start here: FP basically breaks up with Alice out of nowhere right in front of their children, lmao
- it’s incredibly strange how everyone treats JB’s videos as some sort of utterly depraved act and not just a weird thing she did to pass her free time in middle school instead of smoking cigarettes in a Wendy’s parking lot and shoplifting
- poor Jughead got flat-out rejected by his family for the 80 millionth time in his life just so they could have a dramatic scene of former Sheriff Idiot speeding away on his motorbike. god i hate FP, and the way Skeet Ulrich plays every single scene like he just found out his half-brother Jimmy will be going to prison for life if he doesn’t step up and admit he’s the one who left those drugs in the glove compartment the night they got pulled over driving home from a tense standoff over custody rights with his ex-wife
- Fangs and Sweet Pea walk at graduation as a pair, because god forbid we give one of them 5 extra seconds of screentime that might cut into Archie-staring-at-an-old-military-photo time
- when Archie stops by the army table one of the recruiters says “this is not a decision to make lightly” which wins the award for most unrealistic dialogue ever spoken on Riverdale
- still angry that Jughead just tosses his hat in the time capsule and no one even fkn blinks
- Cheryl and Toni’s breakup is just???????
- obviously the best thing that could have happened to Toni tho
- the scene of Archie’s confession on the bleachers really is fantastic. Veronica freaks out, Jughead looks mildly concerned, Betty’s just like “umm yeah sounds good Archie drive safe?”
- the fact that they don’t even begin to touch the Bughead fallout from 4x17 until the last 15 minutes of the episode really drives home how clear it is they just didn’t WANT to deal with it because it made no gd SENSE
- Veronica Lodge is a goddamn fucking angel, btw
- the last scene between Jug & Archie is a perfect encapsulation of what drives me fucking crazy about this show. i can see Jug having this “it doesn’t matter” reaction if the thought process underpinning it was “i’m incredibly fucking angry at you BUT i’m still processing everything and don’t know the right way to express it and also you’re going to Army to maybe die in The War so i’m just going to pretend like everything’s cool for now.” but instead of giving it any of that nuance that would make it believable, this show just plays it completely straight so we’re supposed to take it at face value that this is how Jughead feels, Best Bros Forever Bro!!!
- typing that out reminded me of one of the few highlights of this episode, which is when Reggie looks like he might go in for a kiss with Archie on the last day of school. we were so close
- the other highlight is when Penelope Blossom pops out of the bushes at graduation, but you didn’t need me to tell you that
- Betty and Jughead not talking makes me SO SAD. Jughead squatting in Archie’s house and then the fuck bunker makes me SO SAD. Jughead getting ditched at Pop’s one year later makes me SO SAD.
- what the FUCK, riverdale
- editing to add: i guarantee no one reading this will remember, but the first few minutes of this episode start with a) FP, Jughead and Archie showing up at Hiram’s door, b) demanding he reinstate Tom Keller as sheriff so that he can c) arrest a bunch of homeless kids who have been sleeping underneath the boxing ring at Archie’s gym, which they only know about because d) these are also the kids who helped JB make her videos?

This Side of Paradise
Fandom: Riverdale Pairing: Jughead Jones x Male!Reader Summary: so if you’re lonely, no need to show me, if you’re lonely come be lonely with me. a song you made for jughead. Word Count: 1,549 Warning: Smoking, mentions of weed A/n; inspired by the song this side of paradise by coyote theory
You stare at him inquisitively, you and Jughead are two different people. You were a music kid, very popular in school. You were in the band, and your school is very up the ass with music because there are so many talented kids. Jughead prefers to be alone and you were always in crowds.
Jughead had no bad feelings towards you, you went to the same elementary school, middle school and now high school - objectively you two grew up together alongside with Archie and Betty. He watched you from being his friend to drift away to bigger crowds, boys and girls alike to worship the ground you walk upon.
You were a popular band in Riverdale, you get a lot of money for gigs and parties. Jughead knows you’re going to a successful music college, you’re going to make it big in the world. Even as a high schooler, your band is getting streams on your platforms, you were already a rising star. Jughead was happy for you, but there are times where he wished there wasn’t a big crowd or a group around you.
He wished it was old times, just you and him.
That’s when he sees you under the bleachers, skipping out Chemistry. You were reading a book as Jughead smirks to see you. You were popular, but no one ever really knew you other than your band members, those you consider as best friends.
“It’s been a while, (Y/n).”
Your attention diverts towards him and give him an easy smile, “Alas, Jughead Jones arrives the scene.”
“You’re dramatic,” Jughead says laughing though, as he sits by you, “Why are you avoiding Chemistry.”
“Could say the same for you,” You replied, shrugging your shoulders, “Chemistry is boring and I had to get away from people, and you?”
“I like skipping class,” Jughead responded., “What are you doing?”
You flip the book to show him the cover, “Just reading, trying to find inspiration for a new song really. Been told we have to make a new single soon, to get the ball rolling for the new album. Nothing significant has happened in my life recently nor the two idiots.”
Jughead nodded, chuckling amusingly at your nicknames for your drummer and bass player. Jughead loves his best friend, but the atmosphere is different with you. You two are chilled that conversation flows smoother than ay interaction Jughead has ever had.
“How’s your dad?” You asked him after an hour into the conversation, a double period almost coming to an end.
Jughead shrugs, “He’s the same... Getting better though.”
“That’s good, heard you join your dad’s gang, but you’re always welcomed in my house whenever.”
Jughead smiles, keeping that thought in his mind. Every now and then, the two of you would meet under the bleachers, Jughead feels at ease and another feeling he couldn’t explain properly, but it was there. There was conversation ranging from his writing to the magnificence of Pop’s diner food. One point you talked about carnivals, and how you would love to go with someone like him.
You two talk about the weird happenings in Riverdale, sometimes his dreams and hopes in the future. He asked you how was songwriting going and you vented how you were stressed to the max that you had to roll a joint to calm yourself.
“Hey, Juggie,” You hummed, smoking the joint before offering him some which he takes - not every day you’re given weed, “Ask me why my heart’s inside my throat?”
“Really?” Jughead giggles, “This is what you’re asking me to do?”
“Aw come on,” You whine, pouting at him, “Ask it!”
“Why is your heart inside your throat?” He asked you, passing the joint back to you.
You take an inhale for a second, letting the smoke exit your mouth, “I’ve never been in love, I’ve been alone. I just feel like I’m living life asleep because I figure love is so strong it would make me feel so weak.”
“Are you lonely?” He asked you, almost in disbelief as you finished the joint, you shrugged your shoulders facing a high Jughead as well as you were.
“Why’s that surprising?”
“You’re always with a crowd, I figured it’s hard to be lonely with so many people surrounding you.”
“I’m alone in a crowded area, Jughead,” You say, “I like being alone, but to be lonely in a crowd, feeling lost? It’s a different vibe, atmosphere. A feeling I hate experiencing.”
“Right, well, I’m lonely most of the time.”
“Oh, I know, Jughead Jones.”
The bell rings signalling class period ended, at least the two of you had lunch next. You stand up, grabbing your bag to your shoulders as you did your old-time handshake with Jughead that you created with him when you were little. Your fingertips gentle caress his fingers, tips barely touching, a slow dance between the ends of the digits.
Jughead started to notice that you were drifting away, the occasional smile across the room would be given. There was a period of time where you hadn’t met him under the bleachers, he felt offended, angered. So, when you accidentally met him under there as you were making a speedy escape he caught you.
“Want to explain why you’ve been so distant?”
“Songwriting, I had a spark of an idea.”
“Right,” Jughead says, though you could tell you weren’t off the hook.
So, you stayed with him as he vented. You listened to him, the occasional encouraging nods and reassuring smiles that you were listening to him. When he got everything off his chest, he smiles at you.
“You’re very passionate,” You concluded as Jughead scoffs.
“Says you, you’ve devoted your life to your band and music.”
You chuckled, nodded that he seems to one-up you, “Alright smart ass,” you rolled your eyes, “Hey, Juggie?”
He looks at you questioningly.
“I’ll be busy in the next few days perfecting the song, but Veronica is holding a gig at her speakeasy were I’ll be performing. You’ll get to hear the new song live.”
“I’ll be there.”
Jughead stands by his dad in the speakeasy, he listens to his dad drone on about how he always thought you and him had something, but he couldn’t place a finger on it. You’re performing in the background, people engaging and some talking in hush tones.
“This is our last song,” You introduced, “This is a new song a wrote, it’s called This Side of Paradise. It’s inspired and dedicated to a special someone in my life.”
Everyone looks at you, fiddle with the mic, you’re hair and the plectrum in your hand as you readjust your guitar strap. Jughead watches you curiously, as your eyes flicker from the strings of your guitar to his eyes. Captivating him in a trance.
“This is for you, Jughead.”
FP pats his son’s shoulder tightly, gripping it hard and shaking him, proud that his son managed to inspire a local band into possible fame. The guitar strings vibrate the melody, Jughead can’t help but look at you as Veronica specially made different colour lights beam around the room but when it hits against you - it just feels different to Jughead.
“Ask me why my heart’s inside my throat,” You sang, Jughead falls a little bit in love as he recalls you asking him to ask that to you, “I’ve never been in love, I’ve been alone.”
Jughead smiles as you catch him smiling, you look down at your chords smiling to yourself.
“Are you lonely?” Your bandmates sing,
“I’ll be the only dream you seek, so if you’re lonely, no need to show me,” You sang, Jughead recalls you telling him that you could tell when he’s lonely, “If you’re lonely come be lonely with me.”
Jughead chuckles to himself, flashbacks of all the antics you and him had during under the bleachers. The conversations that were held there, stupid little enactments of your favourite plays.
“You’re the ground my feet won’t reach, so, if you’re lonely, darling you’re glowing.”
Jughead beams when he sees you brighten you smile as you sing the word darling. He gets a funny feeling when you address him as darling. FP looks at his son, with a knowing smile. His boy is in love, he hadn’t realised it until now. FP’s shoulders relax as he continues to watch the performance happily, throwing side glances at his love-stricken son.
“Underneath the pale moonlight, dreaming of a circus life, carousels and Ferris heights,” You sang so angelic like, “I’ll be yours if you’ll be mine.”
Jughead stops as he noticed that when you sang that line, you stare directly at him. It’s almost like the crowd of people watch you had disappeared and in the room was just you and him. You’re directly serenading him, nothing else could ruin this moment.
You continue to sing as Jughead returns to reality, he watches you lovingly, thinking of ways to accept your love. Because, at the moment, Jughead realise what that feeling was that was brewing in him for days, for weeks.
It was the feeling home.
You’ve opened the door and it feels so safe, Jughead cannot help but melt.
It’s home, right ahead of him, he can’t wait to settle back into warmth and love.

Christmas Prompt List
Warnings: Mentions of arguing families, running away, escaping troubled family, found family.
The arguing got so bad that you stuffed a few things in your bag and shuffled out of the side door. You’d walked for a while when someone beeped at you, ready to yell you turned, to see Archie and Jughead cruising along.
“You’re heading the wrong way, home is back there.” Jughead said as Archie stopped. “Oh. Yeah. I was going to see if Betty or Ronnie would let me stay with them for a bit.” you admitted and Jughead scoffed, leaning out of the car window to open the door for you in a dramatic way.
“We’ll give you a lift.” Jughead said as he shoved over so you could squeeze in. You realised that you weren’t going to Betty or Veronica’s when you pulled up at Pop’s several minutes later.
“Isn’t Pop’s closed?” You asked and Jughead shrugged. He held the door open and helped you out of the truck. As you got closer you saw people inside. Pop’s greeted you as you came in and promised your usual, on the house.
“Why is everyone being so nice?” You asked when you spotted Betty, her mother, FP and Veronica with her family, crowded in a booth.
“Because there is moral outrage at your great escape. Did you know that you’d walked for two hours and forty minutes from your house just to get to the main road into town? Your parents hadn’t noticed you were gone when I told Betty we saw you. We passed you twice!” Jughead said as he threw an arm over your shoulder and led you to the booth.
You took a seat and Alice lent over to squeeze your hand. “What’s happening?” Cheryl demanded as she stormed in, looking as ready to fight for you as Toni did, who hurried in behind her.
“Found a lost sheep.” Jughead jokes. You’d forgotten your jacket in your rush to leave and you were grateful that Jughead seemed unwilling to release you from under his arm. Betty squeezed in next to you and held the hand that her mother wanted holding. When you looked in your bag you realised you’d panic packed and grabbed things that weren’t exactly helpful. You would have rather taken the fifty bucks that you’d hidden under your mattress than your childhood bear. Though you were glad it was there now you thought about it. Pop’s came over with drinks and dinner for you.
“It’s not a Christmas dinner but, you’ve helped me so much, I hope it cheers you up.” Pop’s said. Tears pricked at your eyes and you nodded, wanting to thank him but finding yourself liable to burst into tears if you did anything more than tuck into the food.
“Thanks Pop’s. We appreciate it.” Veronica said cheerfully.
“So, you’re going to stay with Alice for a while and if things kick off a little. Veronica has said you can stay there with her, Betty too. There’s more security there.” FP said quickly. He added the last sentence with a sarp glare at the Lodge’s.
“The serpents have your back.” Toni added from somewhere behind you. As if to prove her point Sweet Pea and Fangs barged into the diner and hurried over.
“We got some of your stuff, Archie helped.” Sweet Pea said as he pointed out to Archie and his dad in his truck. You’d been so overwhelmed that you hadn’t even noticed he had left. Archie grinned and gave you a thumbs up.
“Polly has her own place and was more than happy to give up her room, to keep you well and safe. Everything is agreed and arranged with FP and Hermione has even paid for a lawyer on your behalf.” Alice said sternly. Betty scolded her when you burst into tears and hugged you tightly. You felt Jughead hugging you too and then Ronnie joined in, almost knocking your milkshake. Cheryl squeezed your shoulder and when you glanced at her Toni gave you an encouraging grin.
“I’ll pack this up for you.” Pop’s said as he took your food and put it in take away boxes. Alice invited him over for drinks and insisted that for once, someone give him some leftovers to take home. As Jughead and Betty got in the car you smiled to yourself.
“MERRY CHRISTMAS!” Jughead whispered to you as you held Betty’s hand and rested your head on Jughead’s shoulder. Alice and Veronica were upfront, FP was in his cruiser with Sweet Pea and Fangs following behind him, leading the way to the Cooper house.

Betty//crush culture
Request: Can I request a Betty/Reader where Reader and Kevin are friends and reader tells him she has a crush on Betty and Kevin lets it slip about the crush, maybe Kevin tries to set them up?
hey! again, this is another thing i wrote a while ago! but don’t worry, this is the last one of those for a while! so yay! sorry if the style is a little different than usual. i still hope you like it though!
“So boys. Talk to me about them.” Kevin asks suddenly and you stare at him blankly across the lunch table.
“They’re idiots?” You shrug and he sighs dramatically, dropping his sandwich back on the wrapper.
“No.” He shakes his head. “Do you like any of them?”
“Nope.” You reply casually as you continue to eat, not even glancing at him.
“Come on. There’s got to be someone you like.” He says excitedly making you sigh and stop eating.
“There is.”
“So who is it?! Is it Arch-”
“Its not a boy, before you start.” You interrupt him and he stares at you, his eyes wider than before and his mouth slightly agape.
“A girl?”
“Newsflash Kevin Keller, this is the 21st century, not everybody likes boys.”
“Haha. So funny.” He says sarcastically and crosses his arms. “You never told me you liked girls.” He pouts.
“You never asked.”
“So, who is it?”
“Just some girl.” You reply, your gaze slipping from Kevin and to the blonde girl walking past your table.
“Hey Kev. Hey Y/n.” Veronica greets the two of you as she stops briefly by the side of your table. Betty stops just next to her and the two of you make eye contact for a few seconds before looking away. Kevin and Veronica make small conversation while you try to concentrate on eating and Betty looks around the lunch hall. The two of them finish their conversation and Veronica waves goodbye to the two of you before dragging Betty away to find Archie and Jughead. They sit opposite Jughead and Archie and they laugh loudly at something Archie has said making your lips curl into a smile.
“Y/n?” Kevin asks, tapping your arm and you turn to look at him quickly. Kevin’s eyes follow where you were looking, or more importantly who you were looking at and wide smile breaks out on his face. “Awww. You fancy Veronica.”
“What? No!” You say loudly. “I like Betty.” You mumble and he slaps your arm in shock.
“Ohhhhh. Betty Cooper. Yeah, I can see the two of you getting together, buying a house together, maybe get a few pets, getting married, having children, then dying together peacefully in each other’s arms.”
“Well, that took a dark turn, even for you.”
“What do you mean for me?” He asks offended and you send him a look.
“Do I need to remind you that you found a dead body in the woods and then tried to join a cult?”
“No thanks. I don’t need reminding.” He rolls his eyes. “Maybe I should have stayed at that damn farm, they were better friends, nicer. Even if they did harvest organs.” He replies crossing his arms making you chuckle.
“See, dark for you.”
“Shut up.” He huffs. “So. You and Cooper huh?” He wiggles his eyebrows teasingly and its your turn to roll your eyes at him.
“There’s no me and Cooper.” You reply, stabbing your fork into your food.
“Not with that angry attitude there isn’t.”
“Would you like to be in the foods position?” You ask and glare at him.
“Not particularly no.” He shrugs. “But, you and Cooper.”
“Kevin, I don’t care if you’re the ex sheriff’s son, I will put this fork through your eye.”
“No you won’t.” He replies. “Because then how would you and Cooper get together?”
“Right.” You stand up. “I’m leaving you now. I’ve got Chemistry homework that I’d rather do than listen to you go on an on about a non-existent, delusional relationship.”
“You could always do you homework with Betty. Bit of Chemistry, definitely some...biology.” He wiggles his eyebrows and you flip him off.
“Shut up.” You roll your eyes before walking away.
“Okay!” Kevin shouts after you. “I’ll see you tonight?!”
“Yeah!” You reply. “I’ll be round at about 6.” You add annoyed and he smiles to himself before grabbing his food and bag and making his way over Betty’s table.
“Hey, guys!” He greets everyone and they all smile and wave at him.
“Where’s Y/n?” Betty asks quietly as she looks around the room.
“Oh, she got annoyed with me so she went to do some homework.” Kevin shrugs while sitting down beside her.
“Oh.” She replies and looks back at her food. If Kevin didn’t know any better, he’d think there was just a slight bit of disappointment in Betty’s tone at the fact that he’d come alone, instead of with you.
“So, what’s are you guys talking about?” He asks, turning his attention to the rest of the table. Everyone looks at each other, and then at Betty before smirks appear on their faces.
“Just crushes.” Veronica shrugs and Betty’s eyes widen.
“Ooooo, tell me everything.” Kevin leans in closer to the table, excited to hear gossip that he doesn’t already know.
“Be-” Archie starts but she quickly glares at him making him shut up.
“Elizabeth Cooper?!” Kevin asks dramatically. “Do you like someone?”
“No.” She says far too quickly for it to be true and his eyes widen with excitement.
“Oh, come on. Tell meeee.” He pleads. “I won’t tell anyone I promise. Y/n told me that she likes you and I haven’t told anyone.” He rambles quickly and everyone gasps.
“Y/n likes Betty!?” Veronica practically squeals and Kevin sighs.
“Shit.” He mumbles. “She’s going to kill me.”
“Holy shit.” Jughead laughs.
“She likes me?” Betty asks surprised and Kevin nods his head slowly, refusing to make eye contact. “Like, she like-likes me?” She asks again and he nods.
“But you didn’t hear that from me okay?”
“Our lips are sealed.” Veronica smirks.
“So who do you like Betty?” Kevin asks, trying to change the subject.
“There is no way I’m telling you after you’ve just told everyone who Y/n likes.”
“That wasn’t my fau-”
“She likes Y/n.” Jughead interrupts.
“No way!” Kevin shouts, gaining attention from a few students sat around their table. “You like Y/n?” He whispers.
“Yes, fine. I like her too. Whats the big deal?” Betty replies.
“Erm, the big deal is, you’ve just found out that the girl of your dreams likes you back and you’re still sat here when you could be asking her out and sealing your future together so you will get together, buy a house together, maybe get a few pets, get married, have children if you want and then die together peacefully in each other’s arms.”
“What?” She asks confused, the rest of their friends also staring at Kevin with confused and concerned looks on their face.
“Never mind that.” He shrugs off. “The point is. You like each other, now what are you still doing here?”
“Coming.” She squeaks.
“What?!” Everyone shouts.
“No, Y/n. She’s coming back.” She replies and they all let out a breath before looking behind Kevin.
“Shit.” Kevin mumbles. “She looks mad. Do you think she knows?” He asks.
“How would she know?” Archie replies.
“I dunno. She knows exactly what I’m feeling, sometimes even when I don’t know and she aways knows how to cheer me up. She’s very sensitive like that.” Kevin says to Betty and she rolls her eyes at him.
“Are you seriously trying to talk her up to me when she’s literally five steps away from us?”
“Mayb-”
“Hi guys!” You greet everyone happily. “Hi-hi, Betty.” You mumble nervously when you make eye contact with her and she blushes before looking at the table. The rest of your friends take the awkward opportunity to share a look with each other before they come up with a plan in their heads.
“What are you doing back? I thought you had Chemistry homework to do.” Kevin asks.
“Turns out I’d already finished it.” You shrug.
“Thats so responsible.” Betty mumbles in awe causing Veronica to choke on her drink.
“Are you okay?” You reach across Betty to pat Veronica on the back and her breath hitches as your arm brushes past her.
“Fine.” She chokes. “Just fine.” She reassures you and you smile at her while standing up properly. Betty’s heartbeat increases as she watches you smile and then laugh at something Jughead has said, and then everything feels a little too much. Because now that she knows you like her, and she likes you back, she has to do something about it because you don’t know that she likes you back and she doesn’t know what she’s going to do. She’s never asked a girl out, she’s never asked anyone out. And what if you say no? What if Kevin heard you wrong. Or what if it was Betty Thompson? Or Betty Daniels? What then?
“Betty?” You ask, concern lacing your voice as you place a soft hand on her arm. “Are you okay? You zoned out.” You say and she looks around the table.
“I’m, err, fine.” She replies confused. “I’ve got to gay.” She stands up quickly almost knocking you over. “I mean go. I’ve got to go.” She corrects herself before hurrying out of the room.
“Is she okay?” You ask, sitting in her previous seat.
“Yeah.” Archie replies.
“She’s just found out some stuff about her crush.” Veronica says casually and your eyes widen.
“Betty likes someone?” You ask quickly.
“Yep.” Jughead says casually.
“Who!-who is it?” You ask, trying to act naturally but you’re entire body is on fire. Who does Betty like? Just tell me who she likes!?!?!
“Just some girl.” Archie says through a mouthful of food and you can hear everyone trying to suppress their giggles.
“Okay.” You cross your arms. “Whats going on?”
“We just said. Betty likes someone.” Jughead says.
“Hey, Y/n?” Veronica asks. “Do you like someone?”
“Kevin Keller I swear to god I’m going to kill you.” You threaten angrily. “What did you tell them?”
“Oh come on.” He says annoyed. “You guys promised you wouldn’t say anything.”
“Sorry Kevin. Its too funny.” Veronica apologizes.
“Collateral damage.” Jughead shrugs.
“Fine.” He sighs. “I may have told them all that you like Betty, including Betty.” He says making you smack his arm.
“You idot.”
“But, plus point. Betty likes you back! Yay, isn’t that great.” He tries and you glare at him.
“I suppose it is good, but you’re still dead Keller.” You reply and sit back in your seat. A few minutes pass and everyone makes small conversation around you until it hits you. “Wait!” You shout, standing up. “Fuck. She likes me back?! Betty actually likes me back.”
“Oh, we were wondering how long it would take you to realize.” Veronica replies, not looking up from her food.
“What do I do? Do I buy her flowers? What are her favourite flowers. Where does she stand with cats?”
“Just ask her out for God’s sake.” Jughead says annoyed.
“Yeah, obviously.” You reply. “Do you know where she is?”
“Outside her next class.” Archie replies.
“E-” Veronica starts but you interrupt.
“English, of course.” You shake your head and grab your stuff, rushing off again.
“Byeeee.” They call after you.
“Am I still seeing you at 6?” Kevin asks.
“What do you think?” You reply and he nods. “I’ll make it up to you!”
“Of course.” He mutters.
-----
“Betty!” You greet her, slightly out of breath as you lean against the wall.
“Y/n. Hey.” She says startled as she takes in your breathless form. “Are you okay?”
“Yeah, I er. I need to ask you something.” You say.
“I need to ask you something too.” She replies. “But, you can go first if you want.”
“No, no.” You shake your head. “Its okay. Go ahead.” You say nervously.
“Are you sure. Whatever it was seemed important.” She replies.
“Its fine. Really. Go ahead.” You smile at her a little and she returns it.
“Okay.” She takes a deep breath. “Do you want to-”
“Yes.” You interrupt and she stares at you. “Sorry.” You apologize quickly. “The answer is still yes though.” You whisper the last part making her smile.
“But you don’t know the rest of my question though.”
“Thats okay.” You shrug. “I think my question was the same as yours sooooo? Yes, I’ll go on a date with you.”
“Date...yeah, that was what I was going to ask you.” She trails off and looks at the floor.
“Everything okay?”
“Yeah.” She smiles sincerely.
“So how about tonight? At Pop’s, about 6?”
“That sounds great.” She replies and the two of you smile brightly at each other before the warning bell for your next class rings and the two of you sigh.
“I’ll see you tonight.” You say and press a soft kiss to her cheek making the two of you blush brightly.
“See you.” She waves you off.
“Soooo?” Veronica asks once she appears by her side. “Did you as her to be your girlfriend.”
“Not exactly.” She replies. “She assumed date and I didn’t want to scare her off, so I just went with it.”
“Of course.” She laughs.
------
“Y/n!!” Kevin shouts down the corridor and you slow down so he can catch up with you. “Did you ask her to be your girlfriend?”
“No, she asked me on a date. I thought girlfriend would be a bit too strong at the minute.” You reply. “I’ll save that for after the date.”
“...useless.”
“What?”
“Nothing! I’m really proud of you! And now you’re one step closer to dying in each other’s arms!”

Riverdale should have been a Disney show
Riverdale should have been a Disney show. There I said it. I'll admit the first season was fine Great even. Self-contained with an intriguing mystery and you waited at the edge of your seat for what will happen next. But then... Part of the problem for me is because I've read the original comics since I was a girl. I still do get some from my mom, and the way they have changed the characters just bug me.Betty used to be the girl next door, always hopeful, smart, trying to figure out the mystery. And it was perfect that she was a reporter because Betty was always someone who valued honesty so her being the roving reporter was perfect. And her taking pills for anxiety or some sort of disorder was also a nice take because she does take on so much, and tries so hard to help and be good and nice and perfect. All the stress. Archie was also great in the first season. A bit horny, but he means well, and he truly is an average American boy so his big trouble of choosing between music and football. He's a klutz and sometimes his plans go sideways but he means well, he's all for family and Riverdale and school spirit. None of this whole Red Hood/semi mafia/wrestling nonsense. I actually really liked their take on Veronica, she still a bit materialistic and thinks she can depend on her wealth to get her out of trouble but I do like their take on trying to be enterneauripal and working to act less high class society girl as she was used to.
Jughead, I'm conflicted with. Because he's good I guess as a brooding, investigative journalist he's good. It fits the setting of the show. But I do have a soft spot for him as the sane man to Archie. Going about his business, surprisingly philosophical. And you can't forget the most important attribute to him. His love of food! I miss that. Like the one scene in season 1, I forget what exactly but basically he ordered burgers and when Cole Sprouse just protectively held the burger to him...such a nice touch. That sort of guy I can see as a DCOM. The genius ditz I guess it's called. But he's not dumb. He just prefers napping to being awake.
Now the others...omg.I have a bone to pick when it comes to the other characters in Riverdale. Josie and the Pussycats-- they are such lively musicians who solve crimes, sometimes in space. ABsolutely wasted here. Melody barely had any lines. And they didn't have Alex or Alexandra Cabot which was such a shame. I know, I know they're in the new Katy Keene show but having them be step-siblings who used to date is wrong and weird and bad and no! Stop having the twins in these shows with vaguly incesteous feelings. It's weird!
Kevin Keller, all his storylines revolve around his bfs or lack of bfs or how much he wants a bf. The Kevin of Archie comics was so much more well-rounded. He was head of ROTC, he was class president, he ran marathons, he was Veronica's bff, he was a reporter. He had an appetite to match Jughead's. He even had a brief crush on Jughead! He was so much better than this sham. He was confident in who he was and did his best to help others feel good about themselves too because he knows not everyone is lucky to come out as LGTBQ in a supportive environment.
Reggie. I think not giving him enough of an arc in season 1 really backfired because if he appears, it's only as Veronica's arm candy. Which is a shame because he is a good contrast to Archie. A bit richer yet a cheapskate. Thinks he's a casanova, loves being the class prankster. A modern day politician with his sweet words when all he cares about himself. Basically like
Yet he has his hidden depths with his neglectful workaholic parents and jealousy of Archie's popularity. Cheryl. Omg Cheryl. They have ruined you here. I'm sorry, I do NOT find any of her lines iconic. It's like she swallowed urban dictionary and a gothic novel and came out all jumbled in a google translate. She may be abused but the way she still treats others like shit and gaslights her gf and makes everything about her is just...ugh!!! OMg, comics Cheryl is actually fun and iconic. She's as rich and pretty as Veronica and unafraid to use it. She wants to be a star like a modern day influencer. She's a red-haired Sharpay Evans basically.
Also Jason, her twin whom they sadly killed off. He was also fun like a meaner, snobbier version of Reggie. But with a huge crush on Betty which I think could have been used to milk such drama.
Polly also got hit badly. She was a good older sister. She was a reporter, and inspired Betty's enviormental-feminist activities. A sane person. Not a cult worshipping cuckoo. Toni Topaz, ah she was so good in season 2 and then they made her Cheryl's arm candy. Alas. I liked her as a friend to Jughead. In the comics, she was his equal in food contests. That's no small feat. She was cool, and joined Betty's band and... she was her own person. Remember when Toni used to be a photographer for the South Side paper. Yeah. Basically Toni as a 3d character with personality. Please return.
Dilton. Oh Dilton. Once the smartest person in the Archie universe and they turned you into a survival freak to get killed by the gargoyle king. Or whomever. I just remember he got killed somehow. Honestly, they should have stuck to smart Dilton. They need a smart scientist there, cuz no one is using their brains in Riverdale.
Chuck. They have done you SUCH A DISSERVICE! So so bad. Chuck was a good person! He was a cartoonist, and a basketball player and Archie's friend. (Yeah, that's right Archie has friends in the comics. Even though Riverdale makes some effort to show Archie and Jug's bond, they're mainly consorting with their gfs. In the comics, they had guy nights. Reggie, Chuck, Kevin, Dilton, Moose. Come on show. Friendships are just as important.) And what did they do, make him a lying scumbag, turn him good and then have him arrested because of what Cheryl did! No, no no. Bad writers. Just no. Ethel Muggs. You have also been wronged in season 3. Making her a crazy freak. Ethel in season 1 was nice. Ethel in the comics is nice. Plain but with a good heart even though she had a slightly obsessive crush on Jughead. Here, making her cult worshipper.... smdh. Okay at this point I know I sound like a bitter, bitter person complaining how it'S nOt liKE tHe cOmICs. But hey, I admit season 1 was good even if they changed the characters a bit. It’s just that I watched Riverdale because of the property it derived from. Because of the comics. At the least I expected some faithfulness to the characters. Not make them all so inconsistent and crazy.
It's just the writing is so inconsistent! The plots hop around and so do their moods. Bughead and Choni broke up for one episode and then they got right back together. Even though they had VALID reasons to break up. Nope. That made fans mad. So they had to get back together. Ugh. And Archie got attacked by a bear and was so traumatized that he broke up with Veronica because "he's changed" for like two episodes before forgetting about it and going back to Veronica. Oh which brings me to the ridiculous "love triangle" of Archie/Reggie/Veronica where she couldn't choose. Please, Archie and Veronica were reuniting and planning to go run away for a weekend together. Reggie was completely forgotten until he walked in on them. And Veronica couldn't decide because she loves them both? No, she didn't. She may have felt bad to tell Reggie but it's not because she loved him. Forgetting a guy so quickly...yeah great proof of love. Horniness maybe. But her indecisiveness makes her look bad. Don’t tease a will they, won’t they when the answer is so obvious. If you're going to do something like that, you should have there be something called CONSEQUENCES! They can get back together but at least wait. Wait 8 episodes at least so they can have character development. But who am I kidding. Character development is not the goal of this show. The character's just move because the writer's want them too not because it fits their personalities. Such as Archie's grieved reaction for baby Teeth in season 3.
Not only do I have no idea when (the ridiculously named) Baby Teeth appeared, much less why Archie or I should care about his death. But sometimes the show juggles too much. Too many characters. Too many plots. It's all so ugh!!! So my final thought on this is... Riverdale should have been a disney channel sitcom. Archie comics are about family friendly entertainment and sometimes imparted lessons... well so does Disney. I get the appeal of having Riverdale reach a new teen generation, but from what I can see the only big thing Riverdale on CW is that it allows alcohol and gartituous sex scenes.
Which is another small gripe of mine. I can handle sex scenes (hello Magic Mike XXL) but so many at such inappropriate moments too It's like that scene in an action movie where they suddenly kiss when they should be running for their lives. No teen is that horny all the time. Plus there's always less is more. If one kisses so much it loses the meaning. If you think your shirtless Archie is going to distract me from lack of plot haha. No. Plot and consistency still sucks and shirtless Archie does not make it better.
But Riverdale as a Disney show can work. After all the comic stories are a bit formulaic. It's all high school hijinks. And all the characters fit an archetype. Archie, the protagonist. Veronica, the fashionista. Betty, the reporter. Jughead, the slacker. Reggie, the class clown/bad friend. Cheryl, the Sharpay, Kevin, the sane one. And if people want a season long story arc with dramatics, Disney can actually handle it too. After all they had the mysterious "threat' lurking in the background of My babysitter's a vampire season 2. Or the Juliet and Mason saga of Wizards of Waverly Place. And if people want adult situations, look on to Jessie. Rewatching an episode now, there were so many adult jokes and references that flew over my head so they could sneak those in. Heck, Disney channel is infamous for all the innuendos they manage. And they handle consistency. Cody and Bailey broke up in Suite life on deck, they actually stayed broken up for a good half season. Gabe matured from a prankster tween to teen in love in Good Luck Charlie. Actions have consequences, characters grow. Storytelling 101
And the best part is they don't even have to think too hard for the plots of the week. They literally can build on stories from the comics. All 80 years of it. And I have put some examples right here from my own Archie comics. Like Veronica literally being the fashion police.
Veronica and Cheryl teaming up + rolling around in their money.
Cheryl changing the Cherry Blossom Festival to the Cheryl Blossom Festival
Archie doing his classic Valentine's Day mix up
Veronica and Betty buy Cheryl’s maid service when her father forces her to get a job.
Jughead and Trula (Jughead's nemesis & psychoanalyst in training) get amnesia and become friends.
A boy dares to change Veronica
Jughead falls in love with the lunch-lady
Betty and Veronica pretending to be distressed damsels to get Archie's attention (it backfires)
Toni and Jughead foil each other in a food eating contest.
Betty's cast causes more pain to other students
Reggie dates Cheryl (for real)
Reggie helps Kevin dress for the dance and his mystery date
Riverdale Shore.
Cabot vs Lodge
I think all this pretty much illustrates my point. Archie comics equals Disney sitcom all by itself.

Riverdale 5x08 Thoughts
So usually I would write a review for an episode where I go really in depth and analyse everything that happened in the episode, give you all some of my theories for next but to be honest I just don’t have the energy for that. I thought after a couple of days processing everything and giving the episode a rewatch I would be able to but nope. So instead here are just some thoughts and opinions on the episode. Again just my own opinions I am sure there will be some out there who disagree and that is fine. Also there are spoilers.
1) So I didn’t like this episode and a large, well to be honest nearly all of that was because of the writing. The writing in this episode wasn’t their best and made me dislike so many of the characters, I mean they were all doing things that just seemed really random and out of the blue and I think the reason why it felt this way is because it was too rushed and these were character arcs that should have spread across several episodes but were instead crammed into well not even one episode really, it was more like half an episode. I just feel like in the first half the episode nothing really happened and then the second half everything happened which was really jarring. Overall too many storylines in this episode just felt rushed and alot of them just didn’t make sense.
2) Ok so the key party was way too hyped up for what it was. It had the potential to be soo much more interesting than it was. I mean it lasted no time at all and not much really happened I mean half the characters walked out and the other left with the people they came with. The most interesting thing that happened was the kiss between Reggie and Fangs. I also find it kind of funny that this was a key party and yet the only people who actually end up sleeping together is Eric and Minerva, off screen but its still heavily implied. I just think that the writers hyped this up to be some big dramatic scene and then nothing really happened. And like even within the show Cheryl really hyped the key party up, with all that talk about throwing some chaos at it, and it’ll be a sexual switcheroo, one last night of wanton abandonment to remind them of their youth and yup literally nothing happened. If I had written this scene I actually would have had Eric go first and pull Minerva’s key to set up the fun vibe. Then followed with Reggie to keep that oh this is kind of fun vibe going. Then I would have had Betty pull Archie’s key first or rather instead of Veronica pulling it. Then maybe Kevin could have made some kind of comment or joke about how Betty and Archie have already been hooking up, then Veronica could seem shocked and question them about it, which leads to Chad accusing her of being jealous of Archie and still having feelings for Archie, which leads to Archie standing up for Veronica and telling Chad to leave her alone, which leads to Betty asking Archie if he has feelings for Veronica. They could also have then ended the scene with Jughead drunkenly deciding to pick a key because he just can’t deal with this drama right now which interrupts all the arguments and leaves everything between all those couples unresolved at the key party which could then lead into those scenes that followed. It would have been more dramatic and tense but would still have lead to the same place if that’s where the writers really felt they wanted to go though I have my own opinions on that too.
3) Kevin. Oh Kevin I just, I don’t know what was going on with him this episode. I mean the opening was shocking, I do think the writers wrote that well, it did kind of send you for a loop and wonder what the hell Kevin was doing, because it did look like a was cheating on Fangs but then later we get the reveal that they are actually in an open relationship. Which fair do’s. However Kevin just seemed very self destructive in this episode it was like he wanted him and Fangs to fail. Something is clearly going on with Kevin and the synopsis for episode 9 talked about Kevin having to face something dark from his past so I am assuming his behaviour this episode has something to do with that. My theory is that it is related to the storyline from Katy Keene with Kevin and that Director Lester Darin. Whatever it is I do think he needs to talk with Fangs about it. I was 100% on Fangs side when he pointed out that they were having a baby together and asked what about Toni. Like a child isn’t something you should mess about with if Kevin wasn’t ready then he shouldn’t have brought up having children. And that’s what’s so odd about this situation is we find out that Kevin is the one that pushed for it all, it was him that wanted to have the open relationship, it was him who wanted to get married and it was him who wanted to have a child. Also its not just Kevin and Fangs who are involved in this its Toni too, Kevin needs to get his head on straight and fast because that baby is coming and soon. Look I wasn’t entirely happy with the Kangs storyline this episode because once again it felt rushed. It again felt like it should have been drawn out over several episodes. Just in this episode we for a moment believed that Kevin was cheating, then we found out they were in an open relationship, then we found out they were getting engaged, then we found out they and Toni were all having a baby together, which you know I called that all the back when they first announced Toni was going to be pregnant post time jump, we get all this infodump in the first half of the episode then by the end of the episode Kevin and Fangs are on the rocks. A lot of people are saying that they have broken up and I’m not sure they have technically broken up, they definitely aren’t in a good place though. But again if they had just had the engagement and baby announcement in say 5x04, then revealed the whole open relationship in say 5x06 it would have felt like a much more fleshed out story and not as rushed.
4) Ok so this is one that has probably split some opinions in the fandom but I want to talk about Veronica. Now I do want to make it clear that I am not hating on Veronica here but there were some things she did this episode that I was not a fan of and again I think alot of it was just bad writing. I was not a fan at all of the way Veronica used Archie to make Chad jealous, to me that was very petty and very childish and yes I know that Chad was also behaving childish but I was kind of hoping Veronica would rise above it. I also was not a fan of the way she was flirting with Archie whilst still married to Chad, I don’t care how crappy of a person Chad is that still made me uncomfortable. But on the flip side of that like with the whole Barchie cheating storyline I am aware that people can make mistakes and get caught up in their feelings, I mean they are still only young adults, so they are still growing and learning. I think the thing that bothers me the most with Veronica or rather I should say the way they wrote Veronica is that whilst Betty and Archie clearly showed that they felt remorse and guilt for cheating Veronica did not seem to give two hoots about the fact that she was flirting with her ex behind her husband’s back. And I know people will say ‘oh but Chad’s a bad person and treats her bad.’ Ok fine then just leave him, that's not an excuse to behave that way. Also the other thing that bothered me was her attitude at the key party when she pulled Archie’s key. Now at first I thought that meant Archie would go home with them both if they followed the rules but then when I rewatched it I realised that when someone picked keys they would then retrieve their own from the bowl. After Veronica announces ‘oh look I’ve got Chad’s keys’ she then picks her own up out of the bowl. Also the fact that Kevin and Fangs both had their own keys in the bowl and yet they left with separate people. So I actually think Chad and Veronica were going to leave with separate people so it wasn’t that the three of them would be hooking up it was that Veronica was going to leave to hook up with Archie. It makes sense then that Chad would not be comfortable with this. I mean I can’t blame Chad for not wanting his wife to leave a swingers party with not just her ex but with the same guy who Veronica was deliberately using to try and make him jealous and who he has already voiced his suspicions about. The part that bothered me was when Chad first protested she said don’t be rude those are the rules, I was just like girl what are you on, she might as well have said ‘don’t be rude Chad I want to have sex with my ex and you need to be happy about it ok’ and yet a few moments later when it gets too tense for her liking and she gets Chad’s keys instead and Cheryl says that’s breaking the rules, she tells Cheryl to call her lawyer. So basically when it suits her and she wants an excuse to hook up with her ex its the rules but when it becomes an inconvenience then she’s breaking the rules and you can call her lawyer. It just did not paint Veronica in a good light at all in my opinion. But I also hated that scene when Chad confronts her asking if she just called him to humiliate and make him jealous. Firstly this tells us that Veronica called her husband and asked him to come to the party with her which really why would you do that if you are having feelings for another man and you felt like you needed time away from your husband? It makes no sense. Also she lied and then said no she wasn’t trying to make him jealous and the way she said it made it seem like she was insulted that he would even think that. Again didn’t paint Veronica in a good light. Also to be clear I am not saying that because it didn’t paint Veronica in a good light that it did paint Chad in a good light, he’s still trash but I don’t really care about him so you know whatever. And once again I was not ok with the fact that what brings her to the realisation that she needs to end her marriage was again the fact that he wasn’t ok with her hooking up with her ex at a key party. Like I am sure this isn’t how the writers meant it to come across but that’s how it did and I just feel like there were so many other ways and other things that could have brought her to that realisation then the key party. I also I was not ok with the fact that literally 5 seconds after she decides to divorce Chad she is making out with Archie. I just, no it’s too fast and it’s too rushed. I do not think it was necessary for them to kiss in that moment. Like it would have been fine if she had just said you know ,’I’m divorcing my husband,’ and then have Archie have some kind of look not even necessarily say anything and leave it there. It would have left some intrigue for next episode like ooh does this mean they are going to rekindle things, will they kiss next episode. Instead because of how close it was to her deciding to divorce her husband the scene where they reunite just felt icky to me, I mean the ink on her divorce papers isn’t even dry yet, hell scratch that it isn’t even wet yet because she only made the decision to divorce she hasn’t even filed for divorce yet so technically she’s still married. But more than all of that my biggest problem with Veronica’s storyline this episode is once again it revolves around the men in her life. Like the writers seem incapable of writing this woman as single. Even when Archie left Riverdale in season 3 which would have been the perfect opportunity to have Veronica be single for a while they matched her with Reggie. Now don’t get me wrong I loved those two together in fact out of all the people Veronica has been with her and Reggie are my favourite, I just think they worked really well together. But again it brings me to another thing that made me feel uncomfortable and that is I’m sensing this pattern with Veronica where she’ll be with someone when Archie is away and then when he comes back she’ll ditch the other person for Archie. Which would be ok if it weren’t for the fact that she always seems to do it in a way that makes it look like she doesn’t have any care for the other person’s feelings. Unfortunately this makes Veronica seem not just disloyal but kind of cold and that’s not a true testament to Veronica’s character at all. I just get so frustrated with the way they write for her sometimes. I mean there was so much that was badly written about her marriage to Chad and just this episode in general as I said before painted alot of the characters in a bad light. I just wish they would keep Veronica single for a while and write a storyline that is solely about her because there is a heck of a lot more to her character than just who she’s attracted to.
5) Ok Archie, this episode I just. To be honest I’m still too mad about it to even really talk much about it. I feel like out of everyone, the one the writers made look the worst this episode was Archie. I mean outside of who you ship, that conversation he has with Eric after Betty calls him because of her nightmare, was just well I don’t have words for what it was. It made it seem like all he cared about was sex and that he was annoyed/ didn’t care that Betty was upset. This is not our Archie Andrews, in no world would he be that cold about Betty upset he has always been there for her. It wasn’t just insulting to Barchie it was insulting to Archie’s character and who he is at his core which is someone who always cares about his friends above all else.
6) Cheryl is once again going about everything the wrong way. I could understand her being a little upset at the fact that Toni is making this big happy non traditional family for herself because she probably thought that one day it would be her and Toni having the baby and so this might make her feel left out. I mean she was genuinely happy for Kangs when they announced their engagement. So its not like she doesn’t want anyone to be happy when she’s not. I also feel like given that Toni came to see her twice during the time jump which we learn when her and Archie are catching up in 5x04 that maybe originally she was hoping to include Cheryl in the whole baby thing and raise the baby all four of them together. A part of me still hopes that might happen but I feel like there needs to be alot of growing and healing for all four of the characters first. However unfortunately Cheryl’s jealousy at the situation leads to her being too manipulative and she arranges the key party so that she can show Toni how ‘fragile some unions can be’ and makes her the creepiest nursery in the world hoping that they can all hole up in Thorn Hill together. I am glad that Toni called Cheryl out on her manipulation I do think Cheryl needed that. Also as a side note I was expecting some explanation as to why Toni won’t be appearing in the next few episodes but at first I thought we didn’t. But then again on the rewatch I realised they kind of did. When Cheryl comes barging in after the baby announcement Toni tells her that she wants to take a step back from the Vixens. But then Cheryl interrupts her. I think the writers were expecting us to put the rest together ourselves which is Toni now that she’s nearing the end of her pregnancy she is likely going to be staying at home more and resting up.
7) I am ok with the kiss between Cheryl and Minerva. My hope is that Minerva is not going to manipulate her in some way and that this relationship will give Cheryl something that will make her a better person so that when she is ready to go back to Toni she has learnt something if that makes sense.
8) Ok so I want to talk about some positives because at this point it feels more like a rant than anything else and there were some things I liked in this episode. Obviously as a Barchie shipper I thought the firefighter scene in the beginning of the scene was really sweet and it was very aesthetically pleasing with all the candles and everything, it was just a well shot scene.
9) I am very intrigued by Jughead’s blackouts and trauma that he experienced in New York. I do have a theory that the visions he is seeing of the mothman and how twice they are shown as a reflection is suppose to be because he is seeing the mothman/ this monster in himself. I really do think that Jughead killed someone while blacked out and subconsciously he remembers it but he’s so traumatised by it he’s keeping it repressed. Now whether he killed someone accidently, or whether it was self defence or the drugs just made him lose it on someone I’m not sure but I am convinced that he is responsible for someone death somehow.
10) As always I loved Jughead and Tabitha’s interaction this episode. Tabitha is an absolute angel and such a supportive friend. The way she went to the support group with him and got him to open up to her. How she took care of him after the key party. She’s clearly come to care about him a lot and its nice to see someone supporting Jughead.
Ok and that’s it for this episode. I don’t have any theories for next episode but I’ve also kind have lost any enthusiasm I had for the show which is frustrating because up until this episode I was really enjoying this season but this episode was so bad its literally knocked the wind right out of me.

until the stars burn out
where betty and jughead are seniors in quiet little riverdale, and the future is uncertain but their love for each other is set in stone.
——————————————————
The best kept secret in Riverdale is that it’s actually a very beautiful place.
Growing up, Betty had thought it was magical. She loved going to the river and having picnics with her family. She would often go for little adventure walks in the woods by herself before dinner time; trying to find interesting looking rocks or plants. When she got older, that love she’d had for the town disappeared. She began to resent the small town and how everyone knew everyone and how there was no such thing as privacy. She didn’t go to the river anymore and she stayed far away from the woods. She just didn’t think it was beautiful.
And then she met Jughead Jones.
Well, granted, she already knew Jughead. They’ve been in the same classes since they were children, and they’ve always existed in the same orbit, but she didn’t know him.
At least, not until Archie’s seventeenth birthday party last year where her and Jughead spent all night hanging out in Archie’s garage and talking, away from all the alcohol and their wild friends.
And now, they’re driving through the backroads of Riverdale in Jughead’s old truck. The windows are rolled down as they let the sun shine down on them. Jughead has one arm out of the truck and the other steering the wheel. Betty’s dancing and singing dramatically in the passenger’s seat, causing Jughead to laugh every now and then as he sings along with her.
“If I can’t have you,” they belt out loudly together, somehow off key and yet completely in tune with each other, “I don’t want nobody, baby! If I can’t have you, ah-ah-ah!” Jughead sings it loudly, dragging the ‘ah’s out, causing Betty to clap gleefully.
He takes his eyes off of the road only for a moment so that they can look at each other as they belt out the chorus together.
It’s 4:30pm on a Friday and it’s Riverdale’s Homecoming, as well as the last football game of the season.
Jughead’s dressed in his football jersey and Betty’s all dolled up in her River Vixen uniform. They should be getting back to the school to get ready for the game, but a small detour won’t hurt anyone. It’s not like the Bulldogs can start the game without their captain anyway.
After ten minutes and two more songs, Jughead pulls the truck over on the side of the road.
He turns off the truck, gets out, and walks over to Betty’s side so that he can open the door for her.
“Thank you,” she says as she grabs ahold of his hand and hops onto the grass.
“Have I ever told you how much I love when you wear this?” Jughead asks as he pulls on the hem of her cheer top. Betty smirks.
“You usually tell me that when you’re trying to get me out of it and we do not have time for that.”
He laughs. “You’re right, you’re right. That’s not why I brought you here.”
Right. Jughead’s been telling her all week that he has a surprise for her and Betty’s been practically bursting at the seams trying to figure out what it could possibly be.
He leads her into the clearing of the woods, to their own secret place that no one else knows about. It’s a beautiful garden of flowers and plants that always stay blooming and green, although she has no clue how. She figures someone has to take care of this, but they’ve never seen anyone else here. Nature is mysterious and beautiful like that though.
“Are you nervous for tonight?” Betty asks him as she leans down to pick a daisy.
He shakes his head. “Why? Because the recruiters from both Notre Dame and Yale will be there?”
She gives him a pointed look. “It’s okay to be nervous, Juggie.”
“I just want this so badly,” he admits and Betty nods in understanding. It’s his dream to play college football and then professional, but he’s always wanted to get into an Ivy League as well. It’s one of the things that made her so attracted to him; he took his classes seriously. A lot of people like to think that just because he’s a football player, that he isn’t smart or that he doesn’t do the work on his own, but they couldn’t be more wrong. He’s worked his ass off to be in the top five percent of their class and she’s proud of him.
“They’ll love you,” she tells him. “If I know anything in this world, it’s that you’re going to get everything you want, Jug.” She takes a step towards him and reaches up to put the daisy behind his ear. He smiles gently at her before hugging her close to him.
“I already have everything I want.” He kisses the top of her head and Betty blushes. “You’re everything I want, Betty. It doesn’t really matter what happens tonight as long as I have you.”
“Well, it would be nice if you did get into Yale,” she teases. “I could go to all your football games considering I’d be there too.”
It’s the dream— both of them getting into Yale together. Realistically, she knows that the chances of that happening are pretty low, but it doesn’t really matter. It doesn’t matter where they go, or how far away from each other they are, she knows that they’ll make it work.
“My biggest cheerleader,” he says into her hair, “what would I do without you?”
“Crash and burn, baby. Crash and burn.”
Jughead laughs and she pulls away from him with a smile.
“But really, Jug. No matter what happens with this game or college, promise me that we’ll figure it out together.” The inevitable ending of high school is just around the corner. In just a little over five months, they’ll be kissing Riverdale High goodbye and moving onto their futures. It’s scary and exciting and Betty’s ready and yet not ready at all.
The smile falls from his face and he takes a step back from her, putting his hands inside of his varsity letterman. Betty looks at him in confusion.
“I love you,” Jughead says suddenly, as if he’s barely realizing it for the first time, despite the fact that they said it to each other long ago.
“I love you too,” she replies, confused.
“I mean, I love you, Betty. I’ve loved you from the moment you told me I looked like a creep hanging out in a garage by myself during a party.”
Betty laughs at the reminder of their first real interaction.
“And I’ve loved you everyday since. You’re my best friend and you’re the only person in this world who knows me, all of me. I don’t know what’s going to happen tonight. I don’t know where I’ll be this time next year. I don’t know if I’ll make it to the pros or if I’ll be working for my dad for the rest of my life.” He smiles now, almost like he’s laughing at that idea. Betty’s smiling too but her confusion is starting to grow.
“I’m not sure about a lot of things, but there’s one thing I’m sure of and that’s you.” He pauses. “Always and forever. Until the stars burn out, right?”
“And a million years after that,” she responds, voice shaky. It’s their special way of saying ‘I love you’.
Jughead pulls his hand out of his pocket and Betty gasps as she sees what he’s holding.
He kneels down and she covers her mouth as tears well up in her eyes.
“I promise you that no matter what happens, you and I will figure it out together. Whether we’re both at Yale or I’m at Notre Dame, we’ll be okay, because we’re Betty and Jughead. We’re meant to be together.”
He’s looking at her with so much love in his eyes and Betty feels like her smile is bordering on being manic, but she doesn’t care.
“Marry me,” he says softly as he opens up the tiny black box.
It’s a simple platinum band. There’s no diamond. It’s not fancy. It’s not expensive or expressive. It’s plain, simple, and it’s the most beautiful thing that Betty has ever seen.
The sun shines down on it, making it gleam brightly and look like it could be worth all the money in the world. She tears her eyes away from it to look at Jughead and she doesn’t even try to hide the tears that are falling onto her cheeks now.
The sun is shining on him, too. His hair looks lighter underneath the harsh rays and he’s a little more tan from the many afternoon football practices. His eyes are shining up at her and she loves him. She loves him more than she has ever loved anyone or anything.
“Not today,” he says quickly, “or anytime soon. Hell, we can get married in ten years if you want, or we can just be engaged forever and never actually tie the knot. Just…” he trails off and then smiles softly at her, “marry me, Betty Cooper. I want to figure life out with you. I want it all with you. I want a mansion paid for with my NFL salary and a huge indoor pool that we only use once every two years with you. I want a tiny one bedroom apartment in Riverdale with you. I want a cottage in the middle of nowhere with you. I don’t care where we end up, as long as I’m with you.”
“Yes,” she whispers so quietly that she can barely hear herself. She laughs, tears in her eyes and her heart feeling happier than it ever has. “Yes! Jughead, yes!”
“Yeah?” He asks like he can’t believe what he’s hearing.
“Yes!” She laughs, louder this time.
“You’ll marry me?”
“I’ll marry you.”
He grins so wide that it takes up his whole face. He rarely smiles like that and Betty knows that he’s as happy as she is right now.
Jughead laughs once, like he’s still unsure that he isn’t dreaming, and then he jumps up to his feet. He takes the ring out of the box and holds it out to her.
“It’s not much,” he tells her, “but I wanted it to be purely yours.” He angles it so that she can see the inside of the band, where words are inscribed in cursive.
She looks closer and gasps as she sees the engraving.
Until the stars burn out
“It’s beautiful,” she says and she means it. “It’s perfect.”
He shakily puts it onto Betty’s finger, and she looks at it in admiration before she throws her arms around Jughead’s shoulders.
He picks her up off of the ground and twirls her around, the sound of their undeniably happy laughter mixing together with the song the birds are singing to create a beautiful melody.
For the first time in a long time, the future doesn’t feel like some kind of impending doom; it feels like the beginning of forever, like the beginning of happiness.
And as Jughead stops twirling her to kiss her deeply, her feet still dangling off the ground as he holds her in his arms, she knows that she’d been right before.
Riverdale is beautiful, because what they have here is beautiful. They’ve made something beautiful out of dust and they made it together.
And they’ll have it always and forever; until the stars burn out and then a million years after that.

Cruel Summer - Part Two
Pairing: Sweet Pea x Reader
Words: 2100ish
Warnings: Lying
Summary: With your past blurring with your present, you find yourself struggling to be around Katy and Sweet Pea. But when he makes a point of tracking you down you can’t help but spend time with him.
Read part one here
What doesn’t kill me makes me want you more.
You should have been honest from the start.
You should have told Katy who Sweet Pea was, what it had meant to see them together, how everything you thought you had felt had shifted since you’d found out the truth.
But instead you ignored it. Acting as if Sweet Pea being thrust back into your life wasn’t confusing, that your best friend dating the only guy you’d ever loved wasn’t a problem and that you were totally fine about the whole situation.
After the party you decided to throw yourself into work, focusing your mind on your growing business so it wouldn’t be tempted to wonder. You used it as a perfect excuse to avoid catch ups with Katy, to duck out of get togethers organised by Betty and Veronica and even though you’d stayed in contacted with Fangs and Toni you’d swerve the conversation every time it headed to something Sweet Pea related.
It has worked for three whole weeks until he surprised you at work.
You shouldn’t have even been at your Bakery when he walked in, but the minute the small bell above the door rang out you could feel his presence, the sense almost overwhelming.
He knew he shouldn’t have come, shouldn’t have wanted to, but it’s all he could think about.
“One vanilla cupcake please.” His voice held a note of uncertainty, but it was still warm, and it had a way of making you think of home even though Sweet Pea had stopped being that a long time ago.
“Pea what are you doing here?” You will yourself to turn and face him, a fake smile plastered on your lips as you tried to ignore the way your heart rate picked up at just the sight of him.
“I was just passing and I saw this little bakery, thought I’d stop in and here you are.” You could tell he was lying by his over dramatic hand gestures as he pointed towards you, feigning shock as he fought off a nervous laugh.
“Really?” Your raised eyebrow told him you were definitely on to him, the tips of his ears turning red at the thought of being caught out.
“No.” He admitted, self consciously scratching the back of his head, his cheeks starting to burn pink. “Jug mentioned you own a bakery and I’ve been craving one of your cupcakes since.”
You know you should have been mad at him, annoyed that he was making avoiding situations like this so difficult but you couldn’t but laugh as you reached down into the counter and placed a cupcake in front of him. “It’s a good job you found it then.”
You watched in silence as he accepted it, a child like grin on his face as he excitedly peeled back the paper. You wonder if he’s thinking what you are as you recall all the times you’d baked together in the past, Sweet Pea assigning himself master taste tester just so he could eat everything.
“Just as good as I remember.” He groaned after he took a bite, his tongue coming out to lick the frosting off his lips as he savoured the taste, realising how much he’d missed it. How much he’d missed you. “Are you busy right now?”
His question caught you off guard, your eyes widening in surprise as you began to shake your head. “Actually I-“
“Was just leaving, you’re shift ended 10 minutes ago, I’ve got it from here.” Ethel cut you off from the other end of the counter, oblivious to the fact you wanted to spend as little time as you could with Sweet Pea.
“Maybe we could go for a walk?” His smile was warm and he had an inviting look in his eyes that made you instantly regret even thinking about saying no. “Catch up?”
“Just give me five.” You sighed, already knowing it was a bad idea.
-
After you left the bakery, you and Sweet Pea fell into a comfortable routine of telling each other about the last seven years of your lives. You explained how you met Katy, the highs and lows of university life and how you’d come to own the bakery as he told you about how different Riverdale was now, recalling his version of a story you knew all too well, of how the Serpents and FP had worked together with the occasional help from Jughead and Archie to bring down Hiram Lodge for good and save the town. You smiled sadly as he explained his decision to travel and reminisced about meeting Katy in the South of France. You wanted to be happy for them, you truly did and even though part of you was, you also couldn’t ignore the aching in your chest.
“This is weird isn’t it?” He asked, almost as if he could read your mind as you found a bench to sit.
“Definitely isn’t what I thought I’d be doing today.” You confessed, wondering if your best friend dating your ex boyfriend would ever feel normal.
“Katy thinks you’re avoiding her.” He blurted out, already worrying if he’d crossed a line.
“I’m not avoiding her-“ You tried to back track, the air between the two of you thickening with unease as the conversation stuck on Katy and you felt yourself beginning to spiral.
“Then it’s me you’re avoiding.” He cut you off, his sentence more a statement than a question, he didn’t need an answer to know he was right.
“Pea I’m not... it’s a lot to get my head around okay?” You knew there was no point in lying, Sweet Pea could read you just as well as you could read him.
“I get it, trust me I do...” He ran a hand down his face, his composure slipping slightly as he showed how difficult it was for him too. But then he took a deep a breath, a smile back on his face as he spoke with a sense of hope. “But we were friends once, maybe we could be again?”
“Yeah, maybe.” You returned his smile, a small gust of wind making you shiver but you barely noticed the goosebumps on your arms as you question whether you and Sweet Pea could ever be just friends again.
“Are you cold?” He asked, already shrugging his jacket off instead of waiting for you to answer.
“I’m fine-“ You insist, hands held up to object.
“Here.” Despite your protests Sweet Pea wrapped his jacket around your shoulders, his fingertips lightly brushing against your skin making you shiver. The minute it touched you it was almost as if you could feel the cold leather touch of his old Serpent jacket, the smell of him consuming your senses and making you think back to your first ‘unofficial’ date.
-
You made a mental note to kill Betty and Veronica as you checked the clock for the sixth time, finally realising the date they’d set you up with definitely was not coming.
You grabbed your bag, getting ready to leave when a familiar face slid into the booth opposite you.
“Leaving already?” He grinned over at you, leaning over to take a sip of your half empty milkshake.
“Please don’t tell me you’re the blind date B and V set me up with.” You rolled your eyes but the smirk on your lips told him maybe you wouldn’t mind if he was.
“No, but I’ve watched you sitting here for an hour now and I felt kind of bad for you.” You were waiting for him to come out with some witty remark he was infamous for, but his smile softened. “Thought you might want some company?”
“Only if you’re buying the curly fries.” He laughed at your response, a sound that made the last hour worth it, and you swore you saw his body relax slightly in relief at your answer.
“Deal.”
That was the first time Sweet Pea really surprised you, where he showed you that there was so much more to him than the tough, mysterious Serpent front that he presented. He was warm, and kind, and even funny to a point where your cheeks would ache from laughing too much.
That night curly fries weren’t the only thing you shared as he let his mask slip and invited you to get to know him a little better. You remember never wanted the night to end but you knew your parents would kill you, and probably him too if you skipped past your curfew.
So when it came to time to go home, Sweet Pea insisted he walk with you, your feet stepping in sync, your arms touching ever so slightly.
“Are you cold?” He looked down at you, noticing the way your teeth had started to chatter, your body slightly shaking.
“A little.” You admitted sheepishly with a shrug, goosebumps already littering your skin.
“Here-“ He was instantly shrugging his jacket off, both of you stopping in the street as you insisted you’d be fine. But he ignored you anyway, his teeth sinking into his lower lip as he wrapped it around your shoulders. “Looks good on you.”
His voice was dangerously low, his hands still clinging onto the jacket as the leather drowned your frame. All you could smell was him, your whole body surrounded by Sweet Pea and you couldn’t help but reach up, mind spinning as you hoped your lips would meet his.
But then he pulled away, awkwardly mumbling something about how late it was and how you both needed to get going, the two of you walking the rest of the way in silence.
-
If anyone asked you now when the first time you fell for Sweet Pea was you knew that memory would be your answer. It was the first time you’d truly noticed him, and the two of you had laughed months later at the way he’d backed away from the kiss, his nerves getting the better of him.
“Pea I’m sorry, I-“ You shrugged his jacket off, shoving it back into his chest, everything starting to get too much. “I’ve got to go.”
You were stumbling to you feet before he had a chance to stop you, letting them drag you away as fast as they could as you ignored him calling your name.
You were right, it definitely was a bad idea.
-
Once you finally managed to escape Sweet Pea’s sights, you retreated back to your apartment, the walls around you feeling like they were closing in. You found comfort in your duvet blanket, wrapping it around your entire body as if it would shield you from the outside world and pairing it with a tub of Ben and Jerry’s, the only two men you ever needed in your life.
“It’s only me!” Katy called out as she let herself in, the two of you staring at each other in shock once she found you on the couch. You should have felt embarrassed that she’d caught you during the middle of a pity party but you were more annoyed that she’s walked in unannounced but she already knew you wouldn’t stay mad. “You should really lock that door.”
“Most people normally knock.” You countered, untangling yourself from the duvet.
“I’m not most people.” She was smiling now, lifting up the pink box in her hands. “And I come baring gifts.”
“What’s this?” You eyed it suspiciously as she pushed it onto your lap.
“Open it and find out.” She was practically bouncing up and down now, too excited to sit still as she joined you on the couch. She watched eagerly as you lifted the lid, jaw dropping as you saw it was filled to the brim with things labelled with your initial and a card that read ‘Will you be my Maid Of Honour?’
“Katy...” Your voice trailed off as you stared down at the card, hands trembling slightly. You should have been honest right there, you should have told her that you couldn’t agree until she was okay with the past you and Sweet Pea shared but the look she was giving you made it impossible.
“Well?” She playfully hit your leg, impatiently waiting your answer. “And just so you know, I won’t take no for an answer.”
“Yes!” You plastered on a smile, laughing alongside her as she dived at you, arms wrapping around her neck.
That was your second bad decision of the day.

Through The Snowfall
Or Read It On AO3
Pairing: Betty Cooper x Jughead Jones
Summary: The Coopers and Andrews have rented the same cabin in the woods every holiday season since their kids were two years old.
And with Archie and Betty leaving for college in just a few months, Betty is determined to make this Christmas a memorable one…by telling Archie how she really feels.
What she doesn’t plan for is Archie bringing his best friend.
Or the way her gaze is suddenly lingering on the wild dark curls peeking out from beneath a crown beanie rather than the ginger spikes she’d set her sights on so long ago.
Chapter One: Moonlight
She wrings her hands together in front of her body as she takes a shallow breath and straightens her shoulders.
“Archie,” she begins softly, tugging her bottom lip between her teeth nervously before releasing it to continue. “I like you. Like really like you. I have for a long time now.”
Her reflection stares back at her blankly and if that’s any indication as to how this confession is going to go she’d rather shove her hand in a garbage disposal.
Shaking her head, Betty turns on the faucet and splashes the cool water on her heated cheeks in an effort to relax. When that’s not enough, she turns to the clawfoot bathtub behind her and begins running the water, tossing in a lavender rose bath bomb. There are dried petals laced throughout and watching them rise to the top of the now swirling purple water begins to calm her nerves.
She can do this.
She’s spent two weeks of every winter holiday break with Archie Andrews for the past fifteen years, since they were both running about this very same cabin in their diapers and ugly toddler-sized Christmas sweaters.
Though they had never been able to spend more time together than that, they’d grown closer every winter and a few years ago they’d declared themselves the best of friends. This had lead to the occasional impromptu FaceTime conversation, encouraging texts before her school paper article releases and his important football games, and even a phone call before bed if either of them were feeling especially anxious.
Her family had moved to Connecticut, away from their hometown of Riverdale, when she was two years old due to her father’s new job. Archie and his family had remained in Riverdale, which had only broken her mother, Alice, and Archie’s mother, Mary’s, hearts. They’d quickly decided they couldn’t bear not to come up with an annual reason for the families to spend an extended amount of time together and after several glasses of wine and much research, the ladies had decided on a yearly holiday trip to a little upscale town outside of Whistler, Canada.
She peels off her pajamas and undergarments as soon as the water fills the tub and the hot water is exactly what she needs to quiet her overactive mind. She tilts her head back against the tub rim and runs her fingers absentmindedly through the colorful bubbles atop the water.
The chime of her cell phone interrupts her efforts and she glances at the device resting on the small side table near the tub.
Reaching out to see who the message is from, a small smile forms on her lips when she recognizes the name.
V: Is three full suitcases too many for this winter wonderland vacation? Be honest.
Betty rolls her eyes and chuckles to herself as she imagines her - and she means this in the kindest of ways - high maintenance best friend dragging all of these suitcases up their snowed in cabin driveway.
B: I’d strongly advise cutting back to two.
V: Please tell me you’re joking.
B: Are you packing with Cher? Only she could convince you to pack that much for a two week trip
V: Fine. Cutting back to two and a carry on!
Betty smiles and closes her eyes once more, about to set her phone back on the nightstand when the sound of her phone pings once more.
Cher: @ me next time, Betty Dearest.
B: 😘
Betty grins at the fact that her best friends are currently together and turns the sound off of her phone in an effort to focus on the relaxation she’d drawn this bath for in the first place.
The steam from the tub has been rising against her face and she welcomes the warmth and the invigorated way it makes her skin feel. She’s wondering whether she should apply a deep clean clay face mask - one can never look too refreshed and moisturized when professing their longtime feelings for their even longertime friend - when she spots her phone lighting up out of the corner of her eye.
Groaning, she’s about to flip it over until her heart begins to thump erratically.
Archie: packing to see u tomorrow
B: Shouldn’t you already be packed? I thought your plane was leaving around noon!
Archie: it is! considered packing in the morn but gotta get in that last work out u know
Betty smiles to herself, knowing she hasn’t seen him in an entire year and she’s sure football has been working wonders on his already impressive body. Although, she’s never been that interested in overly muscular guys…but this is Archie. It’s different. Right? She brushes the thought away as she runs her tongue along her bottom lip and decides whether she should take a little risk with this next text.
B: I’m excited to see you tomorrow :)
Archie: same. see u then ;)
She tries not to overanalyze the winky face emoji as she sinks further into her now lukewarm bath.

Veronica arrives promptly at 3:00PM and Betty rushes out the front door the moment she sees Veronica’s private driver pull into the driveway. She looks like a picturesque beauty snow queen as she steps from the car in a lovely periwinkle snow jacket and matching beret, but the second she sees Betty, she squeals excitedly.
They throw their arms around each other in a tight hug as though they hadn’t just seen each other at school a few days ago. Veronica had agreed to come with Betty on vacation this year as soon as Betty had asked and she knows it’s because Veronica’s home life is currently a parental war zone.
She also knows she’ll have to ask more about that later.
“Oh, Betty! This cabin is absolutely gorgeous! I can already feel how cozy it is from here,” she says approvingly as she waves for her driver to follow behind her with her bags.
Betty wonders if she should help him, but he seems to have an understanding with Veronica and follows suit.
“It’s so wonderful! Mom has the fire going and wait until you see our bathroom,” Betty gushes as Veronica loops her arm through hers. “We even have a clawfoot bathtub!”
They make their way inside and Veronica tips her driver an amount of money in cash that Betty’s only seen a couple of times in her entire life. Alice rushes over to squeeze Veronica tightly while berating her for not wearing a heavier jacket with these freezing temperatures.
Hal brings her into a quick hug and lets her know that he’s got a pot roast cooking in the crockpot for dinner, if she’s interested.
Betty’s laying on her stomach across Veronica’s bed in their large shared room on the second floor of the cabin, her ankles crossed as she swings her feet gently back and forth. Veronica is unpacking and chattering on about the latest drama with her parents before she shakes her head.
“Okay, enough of that! When is the infamous Archie Andrews coming?”
Betty’s cheeks warm as she rests her head against a pillow and looks up at her best friend. “Around 8:00PM, I think? That’s when we’re expecting them anyways.”
“I’m so excited to meet the boy you haven’t stopped gushing about since you fell for him three years ago,” Veronica says, giving her a teasing smile. “He better be everything you’ve amped him up to be.”
“No pressure,” Betty groans, tugging the pillow from beneath her and smacking her friend with it. Veronica laughs and tosses a pair of rolled up pantyhose at Betty’s head.
“Do you think you’ll tell him tonight?”
“Of course. The earlier I tell him the more time we get to spend together,” Betty replies happily before grimacing. “Or the longer amount of time I have to face rejection.”
“He won’t reject you.” Veronica arches an eyebrow dramatically and purses her lips as she says, “unless he’s a complete idiot.”
Betty laughs just as Alice waltzes into their bedroom and she fights the urge to ask her mother if she has any idea knocking exists.
“Elizabeth, darling, have you told Veronica about the Snowflake Soirée?”
“Not yet, Mother.”
“Oh, do tell, Mrs. Cooper!” Veronica sits down next to Betty, crosses her legs, and smiles up at Alice, clearly excited about the prospect of an event.
“Every Christmas Eve, everyone in this little town dresses to the nines and heads down the road for an upscale evening party. There’s dinner, decorations, dancing, champagne!” Alice is currently opening her drawers and refolding the sweaters Betty already folded yesterday and she curls her fingers into fists to keep from snapping.
“That sounds absolutely wonderful! B, you could go with Archie!” Veronica claps her hands excitedly as Betty’s eyes widen in her direction, attempting to send an ohmygod, not in front of my mom, V! message.
Alice finishes with the last of Betty’s sweaters before flashing Veronica a bright smile of approval. “That is a great idea, Veronica. Elizabeth, be sure to straighten your shoulders when the Andrews arrive, slouching makes you look lazy and indifferent.”
She plants a kiss atop Betty’s head before waltzing out of their bedroom door and Betty’s nails are now threatening to pierce the skin of her palms.
“She makes my mother look like a nominee for Mommy of the Year,” Veronica scoffs, making Betty chuckle as Veronica reaches over to clasp her hands in hers, somewhat effectively releasing the tension in her fingers.
“Do you want to FaceTime Cher?” she asks in an attempt to distract Betty from her mother’s whirlwind appearance. “She and Toni are dying to see the cabin and you know they’ve been snowed in at Thistle House for the past two days.”
FaceTiming Cheryl and her girlfriend, Toni, lightens Betty’s mood until she forgets about her mother’s controlling ways and can only think about the impending arrival of the Andrews.
__________________
Betty and Veronica are sitting on the loveseat admiring the cabin’s over-the-top holiday decorations and sipping hot chocolate with marshmallows from festive mugs when the Andrews pull into the driveway in their rental Jeep.
Betty pulls at her black tights anxiously as her father swings open the front door.
“Fred! It’s been far too long, my friend!” The men embrace as Betty and Veronica stand and Betty finds herself smiling. Fred Andrews has always been nothing but kind to her and today is no different. He greets her with a bear hug before turning to hug Veronica, a girl he’s never even met.
“How are you, Betty?” he asks and she knows the question is genuine.
“I’m good, Mr. Andrews! Excited for these next couple of weeks off.”
“I already told Mary I’ll be sleeping until 11:00AM everyday,” he says with a look of defiance and the girls can’t help but giggle as Mary comes bustling into the house with a few containers of home baked Christmas cookies.
“And I’ve already told him he will absolutely not be doing that,” Mary says loudly, making Fred huff teasingly before heading back out to bring in their bags. Mary hugs Betty and introduces herself to Veronica before adding, “honestly, he couldn’t sleep that late if he tried.”
Betty’s trying to focus on what Archie’s parents are saying, but her eyes dart to the front door at any sign of movement and she tucks a few loose strands of hair behind her ear nervously.
“I see him!” Veronica whispers excitedly, standing on her tiptoes to see through the branches of the elaborate and large Christmas tree Alice and Hal had been working on all morning.
Archie barrels through the door, not a moment later, his duffel bag slung over his shoulder and a wide smile on his face. Betty’s heartbeat quickens and her face breaks into a wide grin at the sight of him.
But he looks...different.
His muscles are large and defined now from his football training and instead of the cropped haircut she’s used to, his hair is coiffed to perfection. He spots her out of the corner of his eye and his entire face lights up.
“Betty!” He makes his way over and quickly wraps her in a huge hug, his arms and body enveloping her petite frame. She giggles into his chest, happy that, at the very least, he smells familiar. Like a dash of men’s cologne and spearmint. “Still rockin that ponytail?”
He releases her and she rolls her eyes, shoving him playfully. “Archie, this is my best friend, Veronica Lodge.”
She’s now hyper-aware of her ponytail swinging gently behind her, brushing her shoulders. Does he not like the ponytail? Should she wear her hair down more often? But the ponytail is her signature look…
Her thoughts are interrupted as an unfamiliar feeling of dread settles in the pit of her stomach. Veronica has stepped forward, slipping her hand in his in a formal greeting that Archie seems all too eager to take part in.
“Veronica? Betty’s told me a lot about you.”
“Oh, I’m sure she has,” Veronica answers easily, tilting her head and smiling that 100 watt Lodge smile. He smiles back, but there’s a curiosity behind his eyes that makes Betty’s fingers close into fists once again.
It’s not that she hadn’t thought about this predicament occurring when she’d invited Veronica, but she had convinced herself that Archie’s wandering eye only applied when she wasn’t in the room. Standing right next to him.
“Shit.”
There’s a commotion near the front door and Betty immediately turns around to find another guy their age attempting to pull what looks to be the Andrews’ small wagon overfilled with gifts through the front door.
“Oh, son, I should’ve helped you with that!” Fred and Hal immediately move to where the guy has managed to get it halfway through the front door.
Archie is laughing as he watches the scene unfold, his eyes glittering in amusement. “Oh, Betty, you remember me telling you I was bringing Jughead, right?”
Betty’s eyebrows furrow because she absolutely does not remember this. She does remember that Jughead is Archie’s best friend from home, but she’s never actually met or seen the guy.
“Jughead, come meet the girls!”
Jughead drops his own duffel bag near the front door, shaking hands with Hal and Fred before he turns around and shakes his head in fake irritation at his best friend’s lack of assistance with the wagon.
Betty’s mouth parts.
She’d always assumed that a boy named “Jughead” could only be some weird Jeffrey Dahmer-esque kid covered in dirt who curses loudly and demands extra meat with every meal.
But Jughead is nothing like what she had spent the last few years imagining whenever Archie spoke of him.
He’s handsome.
Tall and lean with a smile that tugs on the corners of his mouth as though his happiness is a secret only a few are privileged to know. A worn gray beanie in what looks like a misshapen crown rests atop his head in an attempt to tame the wild dark waves peeking from beneath it and falling just above his eyes.
“Hey, you must be Betty Cooper,” he says as he closes the space between them, tugging his snow-dusted gloves off and shoving them into the pockets of his flannel jacket before offering his hand to shake. “My sole competition for Archie’s friendship.”
Veronica nudges her and she finally blinks, registering the introduction. She slides her hand into his and, despite the fact that he’d just had gloves on, is surprised to find that his hand is warm and soft. She smiles at him and shakes her head causing her ponytail to swing gently once again.
“That’s sweet that you think you’re any competition at all.”
He chuckles good-naturedly, his free hand moving to tug at one of the points on his crown beanie and her heart suddenly feels warm. She’d made him laugh.
“I guess we’ll have to let Archie decide.”
“Then I guess we’ll never know.”
“Touché.” His playful smile widens at their shared knowledge of Archie’s indecisiveness being an obvious character trait.
After another few seconds her gaze follows his to where their hands are still currently interlocked in what could now be debatably referred to as the longest first meeting handshake of all time.
His grip is warm but lax, as though he’s waiting for her to make the move to break the contact and she feels her cheeks burn.
She immediately drops his hand and turns to Archie and Veronica, who are now both watching them with curious expressions.
“This is my best friend, Veronica Lodge.” Betty introduces them and quickly moves next to Archie in order to put some space between herself and his best friend.
“Is that Alice’s famous hot chocolate?” Archie asks suddenly and Alice confirms from across the room that it is and that both of the boys should come grab a mug.
They make their way over to the kitchen and Betty swallows audibly, touching the ends of her ponytail that fall against her shoulder. She’s watching Archie talk animatedly as he adds marshmallows to his mug, his arms flexing in his long-sleeved Under Armour shirt even from the small movement.
But then her gaze shifts to where Jughead has shrugged out of his large flannel jacket, nodding along with whatever Archie’s saying as he grabs one of the cookies from Mary’s tupperware.
“He is good looking,” Veronica observes next to her and it takes a moment for Betty to realize who she’s talking about.
Archie.
“Yeah, he is,” she confirms, turning back to the small table where they’d left their own mugs of hot chocolate resting.
“So...are you still planning to profess your love for him tonight?”
Laughter from the kitchen fills the air and Betty immediately looks in the direction of the sound, the tips of her ears burning. Jughead.
“Um...no,” she decides suddenly, ignoring the look of confusion crossing Veronica’s face. “Maybe not tonight.”

Something Not Quite Wrong, But Not Quite Right || Ch. 3
T/W: Panic Attack, Anxiety, Implied/Referenced Homophobia (it’s like one or two comments made by Betty, and they’re a little iffy)...will add more triggers if asked!!
Reminder- Jones IS Jughead, it’s a little confusing right now, but will be explained soon.
Please make sure to read the previous chapters first before this one.
Word Count: Just Under 2k
Masterlist
Betty, admittedly, had spent more time thinking about Archie Andrews that summer than any times previous. It was something to do with finishing her first year of high school, mixed in with her summer internship- she was feeling, almost, grown up. Able to take on any world challenge that she happens upon- including her big crush on Archie. Kevin even spent the evening of the Pop’s meet up hyping her up about it in her bedroom.
Kevin was always good for that. He liked chatting about cute boys, and drama and the everydays of high school life...and what they’d do if they weren’t in Riverdale, and bound by parental expectation (the last part holding mainly true for Betty). It’s all stuff she couldn’t talk with Archie about (for obvious reasons), or Jones- who had always preferred artful movies and scary stories over anything Betty and Kevin enjoyed. Jones would always input his own playful quip to conversations- which she liked. She liked that he tried to connect in his own way, and sometimes what he said made her laugh- but it wasn’t the same with Kevin.
And as bad as it was for her to say- Kevin was always more of the girl friend, than Jones ever was.
But it was that night, with Kevin helping her get ready- that she told Archie. Told him she liked him. She was bound with so many nerves she could hardly notice how off-put he seemed. Not by her, in particular- but in a general sense. Caught in a haze. It didn’t really dawn on her till after they had left Pop’s, and she was laying in bed, grinning at the thought of how he likes her. And it hits her so suddenly, Betty almost feels sick.
She doesn’t mention any of this to Kevin. Who she’d previously tell everything to. And she certainly doesn’t tell her mom, who’s still so worked up over Polly running away with her red-headed boyfriend- that she thinks her mom might have a heart attack if she found out her and Archie were anything more than friends.
And she doesn’t talk to Archie about it at first- and then, before it gets too much, she confronts him. Though, less confront (Betty was still working on that strong, confident attitude that other girls seemed to have), and more so confirmed what they’re feelings meant. With all the bubbly feelings that surged through her that night, she didn’t think that far past telling him. It was all confusing and odd and a new terrain past that. She supposes as Archie’s first...whatever they are...that they’d both be going into the unknown together. Which was still scary, but comforting to know.
She lets him know over text. It’s well read, with no spelling (or grammar) errors. She asks him if this means she’s his girlfriend. And Archie replies with an odd “of course!” followed by a smiley. Betty gets that over bubbly feeling again, and tries not to think about the smiley face too much. She tells him she wants to keep it on the down low- and Archie says he’s okay with that.
And while Betty, who said she wanted it on the DL, and knew it was safer this way- still felt strange when Archie said okay.
When they meet up the first day of school- Betty’s nervous. It’s the same nervousness that she had at Pop’s. But the way Archie smiled at her, and held her hand all the way to the school doors- it made her heart swell with joy. And maybe, the smiley face text isn’t something to fret over- it’s just the beginning of this after all. And she feels safe, and okay, and almost confident when she walks into class that day.
///
Betty meets Veronica that morning, having volunteered to show her around for a while before school starts. Except, when she meets Veronica- it’s not who she expects. The school counselor would give Betty a sheet with the kid’s name and classes- so she could be prepared for their arrival.
“Hey, you must be Jaime- I’m Betty.” She reaches out a hand to her.
Veronica tries hiding a grimace, and replies politely, “It’s Veronica, actually.”
“Oh, I’ll make a note of that,” she smiles, crossing off the name on the top of the sheet, and writing her real name in cute, cursive letters.
Betty tells her about the history of the school, and V jokes about the outdatedness of it- and it makes Betty laugh more than it should. And before they know it, other kids are filtering through the halls- including her best friend, Kevin. He tags along, excitedly clasping his books between his arms and introducing himself.
“Oh, you must be the gay best friend- sorry,” she lets out a forced, nervous laugh. “It’s nice to see I’m not alone here.”
Kevin arches a brow at her, not wanting to pry too much. But the gossip queen in him took over- “So, you’re gay, too?”
She laughs, “Something like that.”
The three of them stop by a cluster of lockers, and the hallways were crowding with students. Stuffing their lockers with books and sweatshirts and other miscellaneous objects- that definitely weren’t all school related, as they should be- before being shut forcefully shut. It was a loud and chaotic event, and yet Archie- who’s putting away his books almost noiselessly, and appears in his own world- who receives the full attention from the group.
“Oh, he’s really cute,” Veronica smirks, and eyes Archie, who’s putting books into his locker. “He’s not taken, is he?”
“He’s not but, Betty’s got eyes on him-” Kevin starts.
Betty cuts him off in a blushy, awkward way. “We’re actually dating.”
He looks at her with wide eyes, “Woah, when did that happen?”
She smiles, “I’ll tell you later, Kev.” She turns back to Veronica, who’s looking guiltily down at her hands.
“I’m sorry, really,” Veronica rushes out. “I never would have said anything- I wouldn’t if- I’m trying to be better than I was at my last school.” She admits.
Betty wasn’t expecting that, but smiles at her response. “It’s okay,” she tucks a loose strand of hair behind her ear, giggling. “It’s still new, even Kevin didn’t know. Sorry about that, Kev.”
He rolls his eyes dramatically, “Okay, Betty. But next time, you’ll have to tell me all the details!”
With that, Kevin scampers off to class, leaving Betty alone with Veronica again. “Sorry, again.”
“It’s fine, Veronica,” she smiles back at her- and Veronica seems to ease just at that. And really, it was fine. Betty had always noticed in chick flicks, how the girls would get insanely jealous when other girls made eyes at their boyfriends’. And Betty, truthfully, should have felt more jealous than she did. She wasn’t sure she’d tell Kevin about that though. “Let’s just get to class, right? You can meet him at lunch.”
The girls walk to class together, and afterwards head to the gym- where an all school assembly was being held.
///
Archie should have known the moment he walked into the gymnasium- with his sweaty, shaky, palms and knotted stomach. How the room buzzed with noise from people he’d known since he was just a kid, and how it should have felt comforting and familiar and it just made him nauseous. All of this should have been warning enough for him, but he still filed in with the rest of his classmates, and sat in the bleachers. What was worse- was he wasn’t by any one of his friends. All forced to sit near kids you’d come from class with. They were all people Archie knew but he didn’t know like Betty or Kevin. They didn’t feel safe.
There’s a small section with a podium and chairs. The principal and vice principal and a few other staff members are seated- and one of his classmates who he recognized (because of course he recognized her- who wouldn’t?) as Cheryl Blossom. As pretty, respectable, rich Cheryl Blossom. With a fiery attitude like her red hair. She’s bold and bright and a little viscous. And she’s always intimidated Archie, if he’s honest.
Archie wasn’t sure what the assembly was for, or why Cheryl was standing up there with the faculty. It wasn’t that people hadn’t told Archie on purpose- he could handle big news, whether people would like to think it or not. But rather it wasn’t good news- and no one was jumping at the opportunity to let him in on it. And Betty would have, really, if it hadn’t involved her sister. But telling someone that your sister and her boyfriend ran away over the summer? It wouldn’t be on the top of your list.
It was scary and hard for Betty to think about- and she was sure, even with all the working Archie had done, that he’d have at least heard about it. In any other circumstances he would have. But Archie had spent a vast majority of the summer stuck in his head. Cloudy and unsure.
To say that when the principal stood up to the podium, and gave way for the Blossom to speak- he was surprised was an understatement. He tries to listen to her closely, but loses track early on. He supposes he’ll just ask Betty or Kevin afterwards for clarification. He finds his eyes wandering around the crowds, nearly forgetting about the Not Good feeling he’d walked into the room with.
And there it was again.
It’s when he locks eyes with her. Long hair pulled in a professional ponytail.
His chest tightens and he can’t breathe. He tries to gulp down air but he has to be Good Archie. Good, Respectful, Obedient Archie. He can’t be disruptful, so he tries to do it quietly. They’re shallow breaths. He tries looking away, but the same uneasy- unsafe- feeling stays with him. He shakily gets up, and sneaks from the group of students. He’s not sure if anyone sees him- his head too cloudy. The one thing he’s sure of, is he can hear his heart pounding in his ears as he stumbles out of the gymnasium. He turns the corner, and hits his body all too hard against the wall- falling to the ground, knees curled by his chest.
He gasps for air, and it’s sharp when it hits his lungs. Even with the oxygen, he still feels as if he’s suffocating. He’s breathing feels labored, gasp and gasp and gasp- and then he hears a garbled voice, and he can just barely sense someone crouching down beside him.
“Hey, Arch- Archie.” It’s calm and firm. “Can you hear me, buddy?”
Archie instinctively freezes- and part of him thinks he should leave. He’s not sure he could, even if he wanted to though.
“It’s just me, Archie.” The voice sighs, and combs a hand through their hair- a beanie held in the other hand. They fix the hat back on. “It’s just Jones.”
“Can I touch you?” Archie doesn’t respond, but he’s not as shaky as before. Jones reaches a hand to his shoulder, and Archie freaks out.
“Woah, woah,” Jones takes his hand back. “Easy there, Arch. Do you know where you are?”
He doesn’t respond.
“You’re at school. Riverdale High- you know, the Bulldogs?” He tries joking.
He doesn’t laugh, and it’s that miserable ache that fills him up instead.
“Arch, c’mon, man.” It’s a desperate attempt- he can hear it in Jones' voice. How they try to stay strong and calm, yet it wavers as they comfort him. He hates to make his friends feel like this- not entirely sure what ‘this’ even was.
Archie falls into his arms, sniffling and crying, and Jones holds him tight- as if they hadn’t had a falling out that summer and they were still best friends.

A Decade In Ships
The decade is ending and with it so are many of my favorite shows, couples, and fandoms.
Here’s a countdown of the loves that got me through the last ten years 🖤
10. Olicity
When I first started to see sparks between Oliver and Felicity I figured it was wishful thinking. Oliver seemed too caught up with the Lance sisters to notice the incredible woman under his nose. That is until the epic Season 2 finale when Oliver surprises everyone by declaring his love for Felicity, not Laurel.
9. Bughead
What can I say? I love when the nice girl picks the bad boy. Jughead is the heart of Riverdale and Betty’s love for him is what keeps the show grounded even when Archie is off in Canada being a 17 year old park ranger and fist fighting a grizzly bear 🤷🏻♀️
8. Choni
Speaking of Riverdale, it’s impossible not to be in love with the chaotic, sexy, devoted love between Cheryl and Toni. Thank you Riverdale for letting this lesbian love story be as romantic, dramatic, and sexual as any of the het ones on the show.
7. Deckerstar
O.M.G. Lucifer and Chloe are the ultimate slow burn ship and I am living for it. There hasn’t been a burn this good since Booth and Bones!!!
6. Leslie x Ben
Holy crap these two epic, nerdy, sweet, beautiful, perfect, powerful musk oxen...Ben and Leslie are everything. The kind of love we all want and deserve.
5. TomTom
So, normally I am VERY anti shipping real people but Tom Schwartz and Tom Sandoval lean into their ship so hard they named a restaurant after it. If they can love the love then so can I! Tom and Tom have the purest, sweetest, craziest friendship and they aren’t afraid to let the lines get a little blurred in the name of fun and ratings.
4. FinnPoe
Even Oscar Isaac knows these two belonged together. They had a bond forged in battle, in finding themselves and their purpose. The way they look at each other is everything. Finn was looking for a light at the end of the tunnel and he found Poe, a hot shot resistance fighter who gave Finn a way out and a way forward.
3. Spuffy (comics)
The Buffy comics expanded on the TV show in such an incredible and valuable way. They had some ups and downs but the character development was undeniable. Buffy and Spike created a real bond based on trust, friendship, partnership, and genuine affection. They fell in love with one another slowly and truly in a way they never could have before. They talked openly about their issues and worked through them.
2. Jamie and Claire
Wow. Wow wow wow. What a love story. What a pair! Jamie and Claire have a love that spans lifetimes. Their passion, commitment, and determination to find one another no matter the odds is beyond romantic. It’s soul affirming. Even after 20 years apart they pick up like it’s the very next day. There could never be anyone else for either of them and that’s so amazing to read and watch.
1. Delena
“You want a love that consumes you”
This ship consumed me. Damon and Elena were endgame from the very first second of the very first episode and there was never any other choice for either of them. Season 3 will forever be one of the best seasons of TV in the last 10 years. It perfected the concept of the YA love triangle. It perfected the vampire genre. It defined the show and encapsulated everything that made it great. Damon is one of the most complex and rich characters I’ve ever watched on TV and Ian Somerhalder brought him to life with a tortured charisma that was impossible to look away from. Nina Dobrev doesn’t get enough (any) credit for her work on TVD, juggling two characters, two love stories, and the majority of the scenes. Her sensitivity allows you to root for Elena even when she’s tearing the Salvatore brothers apart. Delena is my ultimate ship of the 2010’s. I hope another show and another romance can do to me what this one did. I am forever a diehard Delena shipper.

Sweeter Than Maple - Cheronica
I finally took a shot at writing fanfic after watching Riverdale for so long! I thought i’d share it to this blog since that’s what it’s all about anyways. It’s based on the episode in season one about Jughead’s birthday party, but with a focus on some core 4 interaction, Cheronica fluff, and more intense Bughead angst then there was in the original episode. Reggie mantle is gay in this but still acts like a dick to the wlws because being an asshole is what he does best. If that’s got you interested, Read away!
Jughead knocked on Archie’s door. He cupped his hands around his mouth before calling out. “You promised me birthday burgers and horror movies, Andrews, and you know better than anyone that I can’t refuse an offer like that.”
“Come on in, Jug!” Archie yelled from inside his house.
“As long as nobody calls pest control because they saw a 5”10 rat entering your house without your permission.” He mumbled, pulling the screen door back and stepping inside. He looked around before flipping on a light.“I know I like it dark, but what happened here? Were you brooding about V-” Jughead was cut off by the sound of a party blower, Archie jumped out from behind his couch, blowing into a party horn. Jughead clutched his chest in terror before realizing what was going on and relaxing.
“Surprise!” Archie yelled. The living room closet door started opening from inside, and out jumped Betty and Veronica. “Surprise, Jug!” Betty laughed. “Happy Birthday, Jones.” Veronica said as she smiled and awkwardly waved her hand.
“You guys almost gave me a freaking heart attack.” Jughead laughed, “Parties aren’t my favorite, but can tolerate you three.”
“All Betty’s idea.” Archie smiled, Patting Betty on the back.
“Way to throw me under the bus, Arch.” Betty huffed out a laugh before playfully shoving archie on his shoulder.
“Get used to it.” Archie smiled.
“Anyways,” Betty started. “Would you mind doing the honors, Veronica?”
“Of course.” Veronica walked the group to the kitchen. “Now I wouldn’t be paying your tab if this wasn’t a special occasion, but I figured I’d put the Lodge family’s funds to good use today.” She motioned over to the island in Archie’s kitchen, where a large silver platter sat at the center.
Archie jogged over, grabbing a white towel and tossing it over his wrist, doing the best he could with his face to make an impression reminiscent of a snooty waiter. “Your dinner, Mr. Forsythe.” He feigned a British accent that Jughead snorted at. Archie leaned over to the table, using his thumb, middle, and index fingers to make pulling off the cloche as dramatic as possible. Under it sat an array of burgers and fries, still steaming hot.
“Holy shit.” Jughead laughed.
“But before we get started!” Betty ran over to the living room, walking back slowly, she carried a huge plate with a cake- its fondant exterior made to be that of a burger. “Happy birthday...” she started to sing, her eyes locking with Jughead.
“Haunting.” Jughead commented.
As Betty, Archie, and Veronica finished singing, Betty put the cake down on the counter next to the platter of burgers. Jughead blew out the candles on his birthday cake. Betty wrapped her arms around him and pulled him into a hug. “Happy birthday, Jug.” she spoke softly behind him. He rested his hands around hers. Betty leaned in, pecking him on the side of his cheek before he turned around, kissing her on the lips.
Veronica smiled at the two of them. “They’re the cutest, aren’t they?” she whispered to Archie as she cocked her head, watching the two in wonder. It was everything she wanted. To feel seen, accepted, loved. “They really are.” Archie said, leaning back on his kitchen counter, sliding his arm behind Veronica. He looked at her, waiting for her gaze to reach his. Veronica felt her teeth grind against each other and her shoulders raise. “B-Bathroom.” She blurted out.
“Okay...” Archie stared at her, bewildered.
Veronica sped down the hallway, running up a flight of stairs and heading into the second floor’s bathroom. She flipped the light on, staring at herself in the mirror. She forced herself to take one slow breath. In. Two. Three. Out. Repeat. Again. And one more time. She pushed down the cover of the Toilet seat, sitting down and putting her head in her hands. “Jesus Christ.” She said to herself, taking another breath and leaning back looking to the window, letting her mind drift off. She tried fiddling with the window from the seat, but couldn’t lift it. She got up, and pushed open the window, breathing in the fresh air. She looked out into the street, watching what looked like a parade of teenagers coming down their street. She checked out the front of the flock. Son of a bitch. It couldn’t be. They made their way to the front door. And the house felt like it shook when it flung open.
“You really thought you could have a party without inviting moi? ” She heard the words belted throughout the house by none other than Cheryl Blossom.
Veronica exited the bathroom and rushed down the staircase, trying to make sense of the commotion. She spotted members of the football team, each carrying a keg and going to different ends of the house Leaning against the railing by the bottom of the staircase in her white fur-coat was Cheryl Blossom, Twisting her locks of furious-red hair around her finger, she looked up from the spider-brooch on her lapel, pretending to just notice Veronica.
“So glad you could make it! You’re Just in time for the real party to get started.” Cheryl called up to her. Veronica furrowed her brow at Cheryl, who reacted at her confusion with delight. Veronica shot a look to Betty, who was in a panic, then moved along to Jughead, who couldn’t contain his frown as he folded his arms across his chest. Speakers from different corners of the house had begun blaring music with bass lines so strong it made Veronica’s legs feel like Jelly. Reggie Mantle made his way around the house, pouring way more than a single shot of vodka into every cup he could as more and more students from Riverdale High flooded the house.. Veronica looked at Archie, who met her gaze before shrugging, downing a shot and entering the sea of people dancing in his house. Jughead stormed downstairs followed by Betty, who clung to his arm. Making his way into the basement, he spun around, forcing her hand off.
“Jug, I’m sorry. You know I didn’t want the party to get this crazy.” Betty let out a nervous laugh; it was met with Jughead’s silence. She watched him seeth.
“We wouldn’t be in this mess if you didn’t have a party in the first place.” Jughead glared at her.
“What were we supposed to do, Jug, just let you spend your birthday alone? Do you know how depressing that sounds?”
“Well if you knew the first thing about me, Betty, you’d know that I’m my happiest when I’m alone. I could have spent this night watching movies with Archie, which is the wonderful lie you came up with to get me here, but instead I’m stuck at some rager that’s apparently in my honor.” He gestured, flinging his hand toward the ceiling.
“I just wanted to do something nice for you.”
“Well maybe the best thing for you to do would’ve been nothing.” Jughead felt the venom in his words, pangs of guilt weighing him down the moment they left his mouth. Tears rolled down Betty’s cheeks.
--
Veronica stood in front of Cheryl, who stopped sipping her drink from her perch on the staircase to glare.
“What’s your problem, Lodge?”
“My problem? How about you dicks crashing my friend’s birthday for starters? Seriously, what the hell, Cheryl?”
“Oh please, we’re doing you guys a favor, saving you from having some depressing little ‘get-together’ for Jughead Jones of all people. Besides, He and Betty seized the opportunity and ran off together, so you're welcome for giving them their moment.” Cheryl pursed her lips and raised her eyebrows. Veronica scoffed and rolled her eyes.. Cheryl glanced at Veronica, looking her up and down before looking off, watching the party unfold. She watched Archie Andrews flail without rhythm amongst the crowd. She guessed that as drunk as he was, his years of football practice made him strong enough to stay afloat the sea of bodies. From where she was, the amount of people in her way made moving from her perch on the staircase too much of a hassle just to get another drink.
“You’re not even paying attention to this conversation.” Veronica huffed. “Maybe if you thought about anyone but yourself, you’d have noticed that the things you do make other people uncomfortable. That’s why Betty and Jughead left.”
“Of course I noticed. There’s no point in hellraising if it’s just harmless. Lodge.”
Veronica stayed focused on Cheryl, trying to understand.“What’s your damage, Cheryl? Why keep at it?”
“What are you going to do, stop me?” The redhead stood up, finishing her drink and walking up the staircase. As she moved past Veronica, their arms brushed against each-other, and Cheryl’s hair swung in her face. Veronica was annoyed, but the aroma of cherries coupled with a hint of vanilla ambushed her, soothing her as she breathed in. She felt the hairs on the back of her neck raise and her cheeks warm. She hadn’t even had a drink yet. She was going to need to fix that.
--
Jughead paced around the room, one hand covering his mouth, thumb pressing against his cheek. He stared at her, for a moment, shaking his head before speaking.
“Do you know what’s crazy to me?” Jughead said, watching Betty. She stayed with her back turned to him, pretending to inspect the room around them. “You know how with horror movies, you can be scared for the characters, but you never feel like you’re in any real danger?” He held onto the thought for a moment, stifling a chuckle. “It’s strange really, because for romance movies, when you watch these fake couples force themselves to love each-other for a paycheck, you feel it. You can feel how much they care about each-other, how much they want to spend their lives together, you know it’s real, because why wouldn’t it be? And part of you even hopes the actors are falling in love with each-other right then and there, because that would make it even sweeter.” He started to look around the room, studying the bits and pieces of Archie’s garage, thinking about how each tool in the room had been used for something. Everything fulfilled its use; nothing was out of place. “But it’s fake.” He felt the lump in his throat. “You know it, the actors know it, everyone does, but it’s so bright, so good, so happy, everyone wants to love like that. When they’re watching those couples get together, they’re hoping to god that they’ll find something like that in real life, and who could blame them? You know? Where’s the harm in something like that? It lets them dream, but it almost feels like those movies have ruined it all for me.” Jughead walked to the garage door. “It’s like, I’ll never have what a romcom couple has, because it’s perfect!” He let go of the door, throwing his hands into the air. “And why even try to, when you can just watch the next one, and get it instantly? They aren’t real life, they know that, and we know that, it’s what they’re there for, so why even bother? Nobody can be that. You can’t force someone to be perfect for you; why would you try?” Jughead scoffed. He turned the doorknob and walked out of the garage, back into the party.
--
Betty swung the door open and pushed her way through the crowd of people. She made her way to the island in the kitchen, spotting Veronica, who was fixing herself a drink.
“Mind pouring me a cup, V?”
“Only if you tell me what’s going on with you. Your face is bright red, B.”
“I tried to do something good for Jug and it fucking spins out of control.”
“He’s mad at you?”
“More than mad. I’m not even sure we’re still together.”
“You know what? Forget him, at the very least least for the night. After all the effort you put in, deserve to catch a break anyways.” She poured Betty a red solo cup, stopping at the halfway point.
“Right? I’m tired! I’ve worked my ass off for someone who doesn’t appreciate anything I do!” Betty grabbed the cup and took a sip. her lips puckered and she almost spit it out. “What is this exactly??”
“One of the Bulldogs just set the pitcher down here when they stormed the place.” Veronica laughed, pouring a little more into her own cup. “You think it’s that bad?”
“I don’t know how you can handle this stuff.”
“Follow my lead, Bee, You need this. It’s your junior year, and you deserve to spend it free of boy troubles!” She locked her elbow with Betty's, the both lifting their cups into their mouths, and not letting them down until their drinks were finished.
Veronica reeled back for a moment, then regained her balance. “Yep, I think I’m ready.”
“For?” Betty coughed.
“Cheryl.”
--
Veronica went up the stairs, glancing at the party from above. She could make out Archie’s flailing (dancing would have been too generous a statement) from the rest of the crowd, and smirked. Leave it to Archie Andrews to enjoy whatever the universe threw at him, even if it was wrecking his house. He may as well get as much out of it as he can before he had to deal with the consequences, Veronica thought. She reached the second floor of the house, and walked along the hallway. Cheryl had to be in one of these rooms. She wasn’t anywhere to be seen throughout the house, and it wasn’t like ‘Cheryl Bombshell’ to leave a party early. Past the bathroom, she noticed the door to Archie's bedroom was still a crack open. Veronica tiptoed to the door, peering through to see Cheryl sitting on Archie’s bed, looking out the window. As lightly as she possibly could, she pushed against the door, trying not to alarm Cheryl. As she leaned into the door, she felt the effect of the Riverdale Bulldogs’ mystery punch setting in. Veronica’s grip loosened from the knob and her weight carried her through, the door flung open and she landed on the floor.
“Christ!” Cheryl jumped up from the bed. “Maybe they don’t have manners back in new york, but you’re supposed to knock before entering, you buffoon!”
“I’msorry” Veronica’s words slurred a bit as she moved to sit up, knees against the ground. “I didn’t wanna disturb you.”
“And yet you did.” Cheryl glared.
“To be fair...” Veronica stumbled as she grabbed the bed, pulling herself up. As she put her other hand out, Cheryl caught it, pulling her up. Veronica was too tipsy to hide her grin. “To be fair, You’re really pretty.”
Cheryl felt her nose twitch as she suppressed a smile. “That’s your reason for intruding?” Cheryl exhaled, sitting back down on the bed.
“What was I gonna do, leave you alone?” Veronica pulled herself up, laying her head on Cheryl’s lap. Cheryl felt her arms start to relax as she put her hands on Veronica’s shoulders. “Look at you, getting handsy.” Veronica kept grinning.
“Oh. I wasn’t thinking.” The color of Cheryl’s cheeks started to match her hair as she froze up again.
“I wasn’t complaining.” Veronica cooed, “I happen to like you when you’re out of your shell.” She lifted her right hand across her chest, resting it on top of Cheryl’s hand.
Cheryl smiled, holding Veronica’s hand. “It’s a shame you won’t remember this moment when you’re sober.”
Veronica sat up slowly, grazing her cheek against Cheryl’s neck before pulling back, their eyes met. “I’m not going to forget.” Veronica’s heart was fluttering, her cheeks burning. She brought her hands down, resting them around Cheryl’s waist and then leaned in, kissing her. She felt Cheryl’s arms wrap around her, pulling her closer. She smiled, laughing for a moment and looking Cheryl in the eyes.
“What?” Cheryl whispered.
“You’re just really good at this.” Veronica smiled, leaning back in. She kissed Cheryl on the cheek before going back to her lips.
The door flung open, Archie fell backwards into his room, crashing to the ground with Reggie Mantle on top of him.
Cheryl froze up, standing up and dusting herself off. “Does nobody fucking knock in this house?”
Veronica watched the fear creep into Cheryl’s expression. She tugged at Cheryl’s hand, but Cheryl swiped her hand back.
“Why’re you guys in my room?” Archie blurted out.
Reggie stood back up, eyeing the two, before looking at Archie and huffing. “Red, you’re telling me you have no idea?”
Archie’s eyes widened, looking at Veronica, who shrugged and motioned with her head to Reggie. Archie pursed his lips and shrugged back at her in utter confusion. Cheryl darted out of the room.
“Arch, it’s obvious.” Reggie stepped back for a moment.
“Wait.” Veronica tried to call after him.
Reggie stumbled down the staircase, getting to the bottom, and belting as loud as he possibly could “Hey, everybody!” a couple heads turned, before he shouted again. “Riverdale’s got a new couple, Everybody!” He had the attention of the party. “Cheryl Blossom,” everyone stopped talking. “And Veronica Lodge, are huge fucking LESBOS!” people started whispering, staring at Veronica, who was storming down the staircase. Heads kept turning, looking for Cheryl.
Veronica met Reggie, who stood, in the middle of the front door’s frame, hands gripping either side. “Why would you do something like that?” she stammered. “I mean, sure, people knew I was bi, whatever. but why would you out Cheryl like that?”
Reggie wiped his nose with the side of his fist. “Come on.” He laughed. “It was fucking harmless.” He looked Veronica in the eyes. “Besides, the bitch needed to be taken down a peg.”
Veronica decked Reggie in the face, knocking him out of the door-frame. He stumbled into Archie’s front yard, falling down. Veronica recoiled, pulling her fist back in pain, but stifling it and standing firm. She took a look at Reggie, who laid flat on the ground, then turned back to Archie, mouthing “sorry” to him, cringing a bit.
Betty walked up to Veronica, taking a swig of her drink before addressing everyone. “Party’s over! Get the hell out!” She put her hand on Veronica’s shoulder.
--
Archie, Jughead, Betty, and Veronica all sat on different couches in Archie’s living room. Jughead stayed silent. Archie stared up at the ceiling. Veronica looked across the house at the mess left by the party. Betty looked at Veronica. “So, you and Cheryl, huh?”
Veronica nodded.”The heart wants what it wants, right?” “Speaking of, I’m sorry I knocked out your boy-toy.” Veronica looked at Archie.
“You packed a hell of a punch.” Jughead spoke up.
“You’re right about that, Jug.” Archie said. “And honestly? No worries, Ronnie. He was being an asshole, I don’t blame you. You care about Cheryl and you were sticking up for her.”
“I’ve been calling her and she won’t even respond.”
“Just give her some time.” Betty looked at Veronica. I’m sure she’ll turn up at some point.
Veronica nodded again.“What a party, though.” She leaned back into her chair. “Happy birthday, Jug.”

The Southsider (pt. 12)
Sweet Pea x reader
Chapter Summary: As y/n notices that there's someone after her, more people seem to want to make an end to her.
Word Count: 2288
Chapter 1 • Chapter 11 • Chapter 13
You were starting to become nervous when you practiced for the Carrie musical. Things were happening, and they seem to be gravitating towards you and Cheryl. Accidents were made, and they were unexplainable. What you didn't know of was that there was a serial note given to Kevin that said to take you out of the play.
"What are we going to do?" Jughead asked, holding his camera up as he filmed the conversation between him and Kevin.
"This is a minor setback, but I don't think anything bad could really happen. There's too much work that y/n and Cheryl have put into this. As they say, the show must go on."
Hal Cooper knew your father. They were friends, and they both saw eye to eye on things. Sinners, for instance. Hal was perfectly okay with what his friend was doing to his family. According to your dad, your mother was sinning in the Serpents.
Hal was disappointed when he was taken to prison. He beliefs were the same as his, and he had nobody else to share his passion with. Other than Penelope Blossom, but they shared that later in life.
When he went to visit his friend, your father told him of what happened, and how your sin was that you didn't lift a finger to help your mother. You were only protecting yourself.
So he kept a close eye on you. He saw through the happy facade you put on. Every day he saw you walk home, lonely and head down. He knew that you were haunted by your parents. You were punishing yourself. He didn't have to do anything, you were doing all the work for him. He stopped watching you and let you live your miserable life.
Until you stopped punishing yourself. You joined the Serpents, he had heard Betty talking to someone else about it. He started to watch you again, and this time he saw that you were genuinely happy. You even had a boyfriend. He would attack your boyfriend for now though; it wasn't his fault that he was dating a sinner. For all Hal knew, you could be deceiving that poor boy.
After rehearsal you went to Pop's where you began to work. But something was different. This time the Ghoulies came in and sat down at a booth. You and FP stared at each other. "Don't worry kid," he said. "I got it."
But they started to come almost everyday. Specifically on your shift times. FP called Jughead, who called Sweet Pea, when the Ghoulies came in for the third time. They rushed over to the diner, making a pit stop to get Fangs.
You grabbed your notepad and pen and huffed, feeling extremely uncomfortable in the presence of the drug dealing gang. The three serpent boys rushed through the door as you were walking towards the booth, and you stopped in your tracks and smiled, turning around to greet them.
The Ghoulies watched this. You hugged each of them. "Hey guys. I'm so glad that you're all here." You said perkily but also quietly. "I'll take your order after I'm done with them."
You then walked back to other table, a smile still on your face from the sight of your amazing boys. "You done talking with that wannabe gang sweetheart?"
You sighed, your mood going back to being ruined. "What can I get for you guys?"
"A sweet piece of that ass, for starters." The rest of the gang laughed at that one's comment.
"Drinks?" You asked, annoyance laced deep in your voice.
"You sure we can't have you babe?" Another asked. "If only you knew what my tongue could do."
"Milkshake or soda?" You asked a little louder. They finally gave there drinks. "It'll be ready as soon as possible." You said, monotone. You then walked over to a nearby booth with the three Serpents sitting there, making your mood change to happy and your voice to sweet. "Are what would you guys like?"
"I'm pretty sure my dad's already on my order right now." Jughead said.
"He started making it before you even walked in." You said.
"Chocolate chip milkshake." Fangs said.
"Banana milkshake." Sweet Pea said. You looked at him questioningly. "Please?" He smiled.
You let out a short laugh. "That's different."
"Are you making it?"
"Yeah."
"Then it'll be good." He said with a smug expression.
"Swoon." Fangs mockingly said.
"More like barf." Jughead replied.
"Calm down Jug." you said. "I've never said anything when you and Betty get all flirty with other over homicides." And with that you left a speechless Jughead and two weirded out boys across from him.
When you came from the kitchen the Ghoulies all stared at you, taking in your looks. They all found you attractive, not that you noticed or cared about what they thought since they all looked at you like you were a piece of meat.
That's why they were all so disappointed when you had a tray of milkshakes in your hand and a big smile on while walking towards them, only to keep walking and head to the table with your boyfriend and friends. They then turned their attention to FP, who was holding a tray for their milkshakes. "Here you are."
"We want the hotty." One of them blurted out. The others nodded.
"Sorry, but she's dealing with another table right now." They then all heard your giggle, looking back and seeing you happy as can be with the serpents. "Don't worry boys, I made them myself, and I put a little something extra for you all." He then winked and walked back to the kitchen. He didn't put anything.
You then took their orders for food, ignoring the inappropriate jokes about you. When you were done you headed to the counter, but stopped when you heard Fangs call out, "Aren't you gonna take our order?" With a smile on his face.
You turned around and smiled. "You already know I got you guys." You said with a dramatic shrug.
The three of them cheered as you laughed. "That's my girl." Sweet Pea proudly said.
This got the Ghoulies pissed. When Penny said to keep an eye on this cute girl, she never mentioned that she had a Serpent boyfriend. You blew a kiss to Sweet Pea and headed to behind the counter.
You served both booths their foods. When the Ghoulies were done with their food you went to grab the plates, only for one of them to grip your left wrist. "Look at what we have here boys." He showed your hand. "A snake."
You ripped your hand away from his grasp. "That's a shame." Another said. "And such a nice ass too."
Sweet Pea stood up, followed by the other two, but you motioned for them to sit back down. You saw a man in the back hold up their coffee cup to signal that they wanted a refill, and you nodded to him, thinking of an amazing idea.
You carried a tray of two coffee cups and rectangular solid ice pack over, 'accidentally' spilling a cup on the guy who grabbed your wrist's groin area, igniting a yelp from him. "Oh no, sir I am so sorry." You said in a dramatic way. "Here, you should cool that off." You then forcefully tossed the ice pack to the area of the spill, causing him to bang his fist on the table in pain.
On your way to the back table, you brushed your hand against Sweet Pea's as it was on the table. They all smiled at you. "Here you are sir."
"I saw that, y'know." You began to panic a bit, considering that this job is what kept you eating. "Don't worry, I saw everything else. He deserved it."
You put a hand to your heart and offered him a smile. "My regulars get me." He nodded his head and smiled, and you went back to your job.
After a while the Ghoulies didn't leave, so neither did the Serpents. You offered free chocolate cake to the three of them for staying with you while the others were there. "What's this?" Fangs asked.
"It's your guys' birthdays, remember?" You said, smiling. "Well, that's the only way I can get you free dessert."
Jughead immediately took his slice. "Thanks. We're fraternal triplets."
You gave him a smile. "I knew it." You kissed Sweet Pea's cheek. "Enjoy." You and Sweet Pea shared a look as you walked away.
After your shift was over you came outside and slid beside Jughead in the booth, exhausted. Just then FP came out with a to go box of a big hotdog and fries. "I figured you didn't eat." Sweet Pea excitedly said, proud of the surprised look on your face.
"Thanks babe." You gave him a cheeky smile, quickly eating it and the four of you stepping out of the diner, the Ghoulies following you out.
"We're gonna go to the Whyte Wrym." Jughead said lowly. "Wanna come?"
"Yeah. I don't like the way those Ghoulies are looking at me."
"Neither do I." Sweet Pea said, eyeing them.
"See you guys there then." And with that the other two took off.
Sweet Pea saw how those four guys kept looking at you. He heard all the comments they made, both to you and while you weren't there. He hated the way they were looking at you now. "Sweets, what's wrong-"
He pulled you in for a mind blowing kiss. He knew they were watching, he was counting on it. He needed them to know who's girl you were. He needed to protect you from those disgusting guys. You were the love of his life after all.
When he pulled back he shimmied off his jacket and draped it over your shoulders. "Put it on. It's cold."
You smiled and put on the oversized jacket. You cocked your head to the side. "Where's all this coming from?"
"Just want to make sure my girl's feeling safe and appreciated." He smiled down at your adorable form.
You hung your arms loosely over his shoulders. "You're too good for this world Sweets."
He gave you the biggest smile, bringing you closer to him and telling you in a very quiet and low tone, "That's why I'm your world."
A serge of happiness came through you and you jumped up on him, him holding you by your thighs as you wrapped your arms and legs around him. "Ohmigodsweetsthatwasthecutestthingeveriloveyousomuch!" You said while assaulting his face with kisses.
He knew you would act this way to that comment. When it was low enough for only you to hear it, making it more meaningful. Not that he wanted anyone else to hear that, but still. "I love you too." He laughed out, forgetting about the audience watching.
You leaned your forehead to his. "But I love you more."
His hands dipped down to your ass, squeezing. "Prove it."
You hummed in his ear. "If only I could." You said lowly.
Sweet Pea was then getting excited. "What's stopping you?"
"We said we'd be at the Whyte Wrym."
"We'll make a quick stop by."
"We could say that I'm too tired."
Sweet Pea kissed your neck. "I like the way you think." And with that he put you down and you both excitedly took off, leaving those four Ghoulies to angrily watch as you two Serpents was busy being madly in love with each other.
The next day you both woke up late, rushing to school together. You didn't even notice that you were wearing his shirt and jacket. He did notice the jacket, but the shirt was a pleasant surprise. You got teased by all of your friends for it, especially when you both went to the Whyte Wrym after school.
Toni then proceeded to grab a hair tie and tie the shirt into a crop top, causing Sweet Pea to be in an even better mood. Whenever you tried to take it off, the two of them wouldn't allow it.
It game all fun and games until Penny Peabody entered the bar. The whole place became silent. She smiled and sat on a bar stool. "Don't mind me, I'm just getting a drink. Whiskey Toni, if you could."
Toni gave her a dirty look as she poured whiskey into a glass. "What do you want Penny?" Jughead asked.
"Jeez Jug, where's the hospitality? I just came to see how you all were doing." She then looked at you, Sweet Pea immediately putting his arms around you and tugging you closer to him. "And is that y/n? Wow, you've certainly whored up, haven't you?"
She got no response from you, only a glare. She downed her drink, causing Jughead to speak up again. "There, you've had your drink. Now leave."
"I was hoping for a welcoming crowd, but I guess I was wrong." She tossed some money onto the counter. "Bye guys. I'll be seeing some of you sooner rather than later." She then left.
You didn't put much thought into what she said, assuming that if was meant for Jughead, but you were wrong. Sweet Pea took you back to your house and kissed you goodnight, leaving you by yourself in your house while your aunt was gone again.
All lights in your house were turned off as you got ready to sleep. And that's when you saw the bright lights peering out of your window on the second floor. You carefully looked out of the window, only to see a few trucks parked outside, accompanied by multiple Ghoulies.

Kevin//you know i'll never be lonely, you're my only one
Request: Hi can I request a platonic Kevin/Jones!reader where Jug'a sister is best friends with Kevin and is with the core 4 when they find him alone at the Farm and she brings him home with her and there's hugging and hot chocolate and cuddling? Please? My boy needs love!
hey! i’ve said it before and i’ll say it again...kevin keller deserves the world! anyway, i hope you enjoy! also, the title is from a queen song (you’re my best friend) if you’re wondering! i absolutely love this song, and i recommend you listen to it if you’re sad (which i hope you’re not). also, to the anon (and anyone else who needs it) who was sad last night, i don’t know if this is something you’re going to read, but if you do, i hope it cheers you up!
When the sun rose over Riverdale, bringing with it a new day as well as a second chance, you thought it was the end of your troubles.
A night of being hunted down with your friends and brother through the dark woods had eventually ended. And as you hugged the people you thought you’d die with, you knew you don’t think you’d ever be as happy to see Cheryl Blossom ever again.
However, just as day was bringing a new dawn, effectively solving all your problems, across town they were just starting for your best friend.
You just didn’t know yet.
Its only when Betty pulls away from your group hug, frantically asking about her mom do you realize that maybe not everything is okay. Because despite the fact that the five of you are safe, it doesn’t mean everybody else is.
And at the top of that very long list is Kevin Keller.
Betty is first through the chapel door, but you’re not far behind her and as soon as you run in, you come to an abrupt halt. If it weren’t so depressing, the scene in front of you would have been breathtaking. The candles flickering, the clothes neatly folded and the general atmosphere reminds you of something from an old film.
But as soon as you see Kevin sat on the floor, legs pulled up to his chest and a completely broken look on his face, the allusions shatters...along with your heart.
“Kevin?” Betty asks and his head lifts slightly.
“They left me.” Your expression softens at the tone in his voice and you swear you can actually feel your heart cracking.
Kevin has been your best friend for years, he’s stuck with you despite the obvious divide between the two of you. Him being from the Northside with a sheriff dad, and you being from the southside with a gang member dad, its far to say there were a few people who disapproved of your friendship. Not that either of you cared, you were best friends...platonic soulmates...who cares what anybody else thinks. And even though the two of you had grown apart over the past few months (specifically when the farm came to town), you always managed to find your way back to each other.
So seeing him like this physically hurts you. He’s already been through so much and right now you want to scream and shout at the universe for treating the kindest and by far the best human like utter crap.
“I wanted to go, but they said that someone had to stay behind to explain what happened.” He sobs and the seven of you exchange looks.
“What did happen?” Archie asks.
“The worthy ascended, of course.” He scoffs.
“Who did? Where’s my mom? And Polly?” Betty asks and you roll your eyes at her.
Despite her being sweet and kind the majority of the time, she did sometimes get a little wrapped up in herself and her issues, and right now, that annoys you. Because here Kevin is, abandoned by this group that brainwashed and alienated him, only for Betty to care more about two grown adults who can usually make their own decisions.
“Gone.” He states, anger in his voice as he stares vacantly in front of him. “Everyone is. And we’ll never see them again.” The room suddenly feels colder all of sudden, Betty lets out a small cry as she practically falls into Jughead’s arms, while the rest of you stand around, none of you wanting to move...just in case.
You’re the first one to do anything. You make your way towards Kevin and cautiously sit beside him.
“Are you okay?” You ask. You’ve asked him that countless of times, but this is the first time its ever felt like you’re asking a stranger. You may be sat beside him but you feel a thousand miles apart. Usually you’re attached at the hip, but there’s a rather large space between you, physically as well as metaphorically and it just feels wrong.
“I-” He cuts himself off before he can say anything further. Instead he just cries, his head drops to his hands and you’ve never seen somebody look so lonely, despite being surrounded by people.
You don’t say anything in return, you just wrap your arms around him and pull him into a tight hug.
The two of you stay like that for at least half an hour. Eventually everybody else goes, Jughead being the last one to leave, sending you a small smile before closing the door behind him, until its just the two of you again.
It takes some persuading, but eventually you get Kevin back to your house. Thankfully your dad has already left for work so there’s no awkward questions about why you’re covered in mud and why Kevin is crying.
“Here.” You hand him a mug. Its his favourite one. Something you got him to keep at your house. A small smile twitches at the corner of his lips as he takes it, but it disappears as quickly as it came, instead leaving behind a miserable expression.
You remember the last time you gave him hot chocolate in that mug, but the memory does nothing to make you feel better. If anything it just makes your heart ache more.
“You always make the best hot chocolate.” He’d said, an eager smile on his lips as he watched you slowly bring it to him.
“I always put double the recommended powder in.”
“Ahhh, so now I know you secret recipe.”
“Plus, the cream and sprinkles help a lot too.”
“Yeah.” He agreed. “Very true. But we can just pretend its all you.”
“Aww, thanks.”
“Hey. If there’s ever a day that your hot chocolate doesn’t make me smile, just assume that I’m dead inside.”
“You’re so dramatic.” You’d rolled your eyes at him, and he’d gasped loudly, feigning offence.
“I know. But its part of my charm.”
“Keep telling yourself that.”
“It is.”
“Has that ever actually worked on anybody.”
“Not yet...but it will.”
His eyes had been so full of hope, now they were just dark. Like all the light had been sucked out of them.
The house is quiet, but its nice. Compared to the eery quiet of the woods and the farm, its quite comforting and you’re very glad to be back home, especially after thinking you wouldn’t be so lucky.
“Thanks.” He replies, taking a sip before placing it on the coffee table. If you’re being honest, its nice having Kevin here. Its something else to focus on instead of being stuck in a continuous loop of your memories of the previous nights. Although you’d much rather prefer he was upset over some boy thats broken his heart.
“Do you want another blanket?” You offer, rearranging the one you’ve already draped across his shoulders. “Or the TV? I can put a film or something on? Or we can just see what’s on? Or music? Do you want anything to eat?” You know you’re fussing over him, and you know he’s going to hate it. But there’s nothing else you can do. You can’t go back and change everything, no matter how hard you try.
A part of you feels like its your fault. Kevin is supposed to be you’re best friends, but you still let him get caught up in all of this. You let the farm take him, you made him feel alone. You made him feel the need to find friendship and family somewhere else, somewhere dangerous.
And by the time you realized what was happening, it was too late. Despite the numerous attempts. It was too late to help him.
Now he’s sat on your couch, clutching an old blanket around him like his life depends on it, and you really don’t know if he’s ever going to fully recover from this.
“Why do things like this keep happening to me? Am I cursed? Do you think I’m cursed?” He breaks the silence. Maybe he know’s exactly what you were just thinking. Or maybe he’s just thinking out loud, but either way it makes you frown and quickly face him.
“Kevin. You’re not cursed.” You grab his hand and he forces himself to look at you.
“It sure feels like I am.”
“The only thing that is cursed, is Riverdale. But we’re not going to be here forever. We’ve got one year left at school, and then we’re out of here. We’re going to do all of the things we’ve had planned since we were little. Our road trips across the country. Our apartment together thats filled with trinkets and utter junk that we’ve picked up over the years. We’re going to meet so many new, normal people and we’re going to shock them with our shared trauma. You’re going to meet a nice boy who treats you like you created the universe. You’re going to be so happy, I just know it. And one day this is all going to feel like a far away nightmare. Riverdale and all of its horrors will just be distant memory, something you laugh about from time to time. Okay?” You hold your pinkie out towards him and he sends you a look. “I promise. And I never break a promise.”
“That is very true.” He nods, wrapping his finger around yours. “Y/n?”
“Yeah?”
“I’ve been so alone the past few months.”
“I know.” You smile sadly at him, wiping a few tears from your cheeks. “But I’m always going to be here for you, no matter what happens. You’re my best friend and I love you so much. You brighten my day just by walking through a door, and no matter how much I dread doing something, you make it 1000 times more bearable.”
“Y/n.” His expression mirrors yours. Sadness mixed with hope, and more than a few tears, but you know what he’s trying to say.
“No matter how alone you feel, you’re not, okay? You are never ever alone. No matter what day of the week, or what time, or even how far apart we are. I’m always going to be here.”
“I love you.”
“I know you do.” You nudge him softly. A slight smile appears on his lips, and even though its not the same as his usual, its better than nothing, and so you take that as a win. Your head falls to his shoulder and he rests his on top of yours, both of you finally feeling somewhat at peace after months of hell.
“What the hell happened to you?” He asks suddenly and you pull away from him. He’s looking you up and down, a concerned expression on his face while he waits for your answer. “Why do you look like...that?”
“I was hunted through the woods by Penelope Blossom and a bunch of other psychos.” You shrug and his eyes widen.
“Wha-”
“But thats not important right now.” You shake your head. “What’s important, is that you’re safe. And we’re going to need re-fills soon.” You look towards the mugs on the table. Neither of them are anywhere close to being empty, but you just want to change the subject and thankfully Kevin gets it. “I think we both deserve extra sprinkles this time.”

Drabble | Harvest to Home: Summer
Author’s Note: Here’s a drabble from what should’ve been a Harvest to Home coda. I don’t know if I’ll ever finish it, but I like what I’ve written and I thought maybe it was time to share it. Thanks to @i-know-you-can @strangenightsofdaydreams and @melimelrockswell1204 for inspiring me to post this.
If you want to read Harvest to Home first, that might help you appreciate this one.
************************
The central air conditioning was dead.
Betty had, for the past three years, expressed concern that the thing was way past its expiration date and had been predicting its demise since, and each year it sputtered on, roaring its cool air into the house. Twice it had blown a fuse and Jughead, challenged by Betty’s dismissal of it, grappled with Google and managed to replace the blown fuse and got it working again.
He was never a handyman, but when it came to this air conditioner, he claimed himself an expert on it.
This time, however.
This time.
Replacing the fuse was not working, and Jughead, sweating bullets from his body and a stream of profanity from his lips, was by turns Googling and fiddling with its monstrous motor with a tool that was probably wholly inappropriate for the task.
“Those were intensely bad words, daddy. Mommy’s going to be incredibly angry.”
Madeline Vee Jones, Jughead’s 5 year old daughter had been taught by both of her writer parents that there were words better than “really”, so she was using two that she had recently learned. Using those words to tell her father what was what would’ve been a delightful thing, but at the moment, Jughead couldn’t bring himself to care.
“Maddy, sweetheart, sometimes daddy needs to express himself and a ‘gosh darn it’ just doesn’t cut it, ya know?” He banged on the side of the casing in frustration. “Work, you goddamn piece of!”
Madeline stared wide-eyed at him, expecting the worse.
He bit his lip and sighed. “Trash.”
Something sparked, and Jughead jumped back, screaming the F word as he picked Madeline up and brought her a safe distance away. There was smoke, and all he could think was that if Betty, out shopping with the other kids, came home with Riverdale Farms burnt to cinders, he was probably sleeping with the goats.
******************
When Betty walked in with their eight year olds Trevor and Peg, and 2 year old FP from the truck, the house was blessedly unharmed and as beautiful as the first day Jughead set foot in it, but when she walked through the front door and felt the overwhelming heat of no air conditioning, she eyed Jughead suspiciously.
“It’s dead, isn’t it?” she asked as he and Madeline sat on the couch, an electric fan directed right at them.
“Daddy said so many bad words,” Madeline wailed, her dark hair blowing in ringlets.
“Traitor,” Jughead told her.
“Hi, Dad! It’s so hot!” Trevor cried, heading for the kitchen.
Peg ran right after him. “If you’re having ice cream, I’m having ice cream, too!”
“No ice cream! Not until after dinner!” Betty cried after them as she waddled to the couch. FP wiggled to be let go and when she set him down, he climb right onto Jughead, his chubby arms clinging to his dad.
“Just the ice pops, mom!” Peg cried back. “Just a little! Trev and I will share!”
“Hey there, little guy,” Jughead cooed at FP, rubbing his back soothingly. “What’s going on?”
FP burrowed his face in the crook of Jughead’s neck.
“He just missed you,” Betty said, rubbing Jughead’s knee. “He’s such a daddy’s boy. He kept saying Da the whole time we were shopping.”
She sat between Jughead and Madeline, pulling Madeline onto her lap. She kissed Madeline’s forehead. “I missed this one.”
Madeline giggled and kissed Betty’s cheek.
Betty pinched her nose lightly, hugging her until Madeline complained. She always missed her kids, whether she had to be away from any of them for days or just a few hours. “And how about you, baby? Do you want ice pops?”
“Daddy gave me loads.”
Betty shot Jughead a chastising look.
Jughead grinned. “I was bribing her. We’re still working on the concept of me giving her something and her giving me something back in return.”
“What have I been telling you about that air conditioner?” she asked, primly.
“That your husband’s magic hands can get it to work again.”
“I never said that. Never. Can we finally get it replaced? I don’t know why you cling to that old thing. It’s not like we couldn’t afford it.”
He rubbed her arm. “Hey, I’m a handyman.”
Betty rolled her eyes and tried not to laugh, but not to spare his feelings. It was purely so that she could more effectively make fun of him. “You are a writer and an unofficial farmhand, but never a handyman.”
“I’m just padding my resume, honey. You never know when I’ll need a new job.”
She gave him a fond smile. It was the Jones in him, she knew. This constant state of having something he could call real work.
Over the last eight years, Jughead’s books had skyrocketed up the lists, with a long-running, critically acclaimed and immensely popular series to accompany each one.
He’s had a hefty paycheck altogether that would probably allow him to never work another day in his life and send their four kids to college, but work he did. He wrote and published his books, promoting them as if the show didn’t do that for him already, and he was a constant presence in the show’s writers room.
But yesterday, he submitted the final draft of the book in his series to his editor. It would be the glorious end to his beloved crime universe, and maybe, she thought, he felt old, and perhaps he didn’t want to be tossed aside just yet.
He was by no means broken, either. He was a thriving, handsome man who had four children that adored him and a “trophy wife”—as Betty joked and Jughead hated. It was a reference to a gossipy blog that had called her “Jughead Jones’s trophy wife, domestic goddess and entrepreneur, Elizabeth Cooper-Jones. Take that, Trula!”
“The patriarchy rears its ugly head, still,” Jughead had moaned, dramatically. She loved his dramatic streak. She loves everything about him, still.
Her desire for him hadn't waned in the least, which was definitely why they kept having these children.
“Why don’t you let me give Reggie a call so he could hook us up with his air-conditioning buddy, okay? That way, we don’t have to think about it and we'd probably magically have a new unit by the end of the week.”
Jughead made a sound. “He’s gonna know I lost the fight.”
“Oh, please.”
Eight years and Jughead and Reggie were still as competitive as hell.
Jughead quirked his eyebrow at her, his eyes giving her the once over. “But I still get to sleep with you, so I still win.”
Again, she had to roll her eyes.
“I get to sleep with mommy, too! So I win like daddy!” Madeline cried.
Jughead pinched Madeline’s chin. “Believe me, pumpkin. When it comes to sleeping with mommy, daddy always wins.”
Betty’s no-doubt scathing reproach was, fortunately, cut off by Madeline’s “I’m not a pumpkin, I’m jicama!”
