I don’t want to be read for filth when he flops but I really feel like Cory might be the closest to Dan we get in modern BB - he’s throwing comps, he’s playing up the goofy younger boy card, he’s got a solid social game and read on the house, he’s got one of the pretty girls attached to him (I.e., Keesha), and of course he’s wearing the bandana. I rest my case. 🤷🏼‍♀️

( Notice: OKAY - The pic there says ‘The Hobbit/LOTR’ but for times sake, and my own sanity, there is none listed thus-far (same goes for the ‘other’ category’). Merci for understanding! )
So I’ve been meaning to do this for a while, and I already have a blog for it ( @nemosrepost ) but that doesn’t get too much attention. Thus, here we are!
(This was a nightmare to get done - it took weeks to get all the links and pics done up in my spare time - I hope you appreciate that.)
They’re all sorts here, from Medieval Marvel AU’S, to Modern Attack on Titan one shots. They’re all organised via fandom, and I’ve tried my best to link and tag everything properly, but that is a difficult feat, so beware - for some it may not have worked too well.
Like my *actual* masterlist, this will be updated regularly with new fic recs, and even new characters and fandoms as I read them. All fic’s currently listed (as of November 26, 2020) are found on my reblog account.
I’ve also tried to add in a ‘recommendation summary’ thing of each - so basically just my thoughts on the fic(s). But anyway, have fun browsing, and overall - enjoy!
(AND also - LMAOOOO - Have fun scrolling lololololol!) - Nemo
( Pre - Warning: I am not tagging anything as NSWF, 18+, or triggering content. However some fics listed do contain such material. Please refer to the warnings or Authors Notes on each Fic before reading. Stay safe guys! I love you! )
Bluebellhairpin’s Masterlist

Bucky Barnes
Knight in Rusty Armour - Medieval / A/B/O AU! Series - by @revengingbarnes Honestly I binged the first eight chapters (+ prologue) in close to one sitting. That was mostly because that was all that was published at the time. It is completed now. I love both these AU’s, and I love Bucky - win, win!
Flowers Bloom - Soulmate AU! Series - by revengingbarnes  Another great series, and honestly I’m a slut for soulmate au’s, so this author might be coming after my heart - keep up that good work, if you know what I mean.
The Great Build Up - Modern / Firefighter Au! One Shot - by @thottybarnes  This ones goes from cute, to hot and steamy, to angsty, and back to cute again. A one shot rollercoaster, and I thoroughly enjoyed every word of it.
Maybe This Time - Mob Au! One Shot - by @propertyofpoeandbucky Okay, so if there’s one thing I like more than an mobster au, it’s adding children into the mix. Something about big bad guys going all soft for this tiny human - and then making them - and that’s called perfection.
Whatever It Takes - Biker AU! One Shot - by @sgtjbuccky He like’s to be loud, so what. He rides a bike, so what. I what to ride him and his bike, so what.
(Un-Named) - One Shot - by @softlybarnes  I’ve never liked Bucky’s metal arm more in my entire life. Using it for a baby going through teething? A+ idea.
Hero, Waiting - Medieval AU! One Shot -  by captain-ariel-barnes Sadly, this fic is unavailable now, and that - obviously - makes me sad. But I’m adding it her anyway because of how much I adored it. The love triangle between Bucky, Reader, and Steve was amazing, and the feelings? Phenomenal.
Steve Rogers
If Walls Could Talk - One Shot - by propertyofpoeandbucky  I’ll recreate my original comment on this fic - ‘Ouch’. And that’s all I have to say about that.
The End of the War - College AU! One Shot - by @redgillan There’s nothing quite like a enemies to lovers trope that’s well-written. But then throw in fight club, a jerk date, ice-cream and pizza - just read it. You’ll understand then.
The Edge of the Water - Mermaid AU! Series - @floatingpetals I have to admit now, I haven’t read all of this yet. But I also have to say, what I have read was fantastic. Mermaids - and Mermen - they just hit different, you know?
Pseudo Princess - Medieval AU! Series - by @shreddedparchment To date, it’s one of the best fics - nay - stories I’ve ever read. I’d dare to say it’s easily the length of a novel, so if you’re up for the long haul, I’d definitely recommend it. It’s worth the wait - trust me. Op obviously put a hella lot of work into it, and it shows.
Loki Laufeyson
Loki’s Happy Ending - Series (?) - by @gingerwritess  Listen, I have been and forever will be a Loki girl. Nothing will change that. And every scrap of content Theo produces for Loki I will cradle in my palms and keep warm until they’re ready to go out into the world or whatever - point is, read this.
Just One Quick Glance - One Shot - by @imagines-trashcan  After watching ‘Endgame’, and squealing at every moment Loki appeared on screen, only to not have him show up in the final battle - this was one of my comfort fics.
thunderstorms. - One Shot - by @tarynkauai Naturally, Loki’s child would inherit his unease of thunderstorms. And naturally, seeing Loki as a dad makes me happy.
Stitches - One Shot - by @lokibug  Loki being nice. I like that. We stan.
Quentin Beck
The Curveball - One Shot - by @healingchurch  Listen, this is on here for a reason. I didn’t really like Mysterio ‘cause of what he did to Peter, but hey, some people are good actors, and some write characters acting very well.
Stephen Strange
(Un-Named) - Imagine / One Shot - by @archieimagines A cocky bastard and a shy Reader, as far as I’m concerned that a one-way ticket straight to my heart. *wink wonk*.
(Un-Named) - One Shot - by @whirlybirbs  Honestly, there are multiple fics of hers on this list, and that’s because she’s a damn fine writer, and her stories are just that addictive. This one is no different. I was preparing to read more and then it ended. But all good things, right?
Crash and Burn - One Shot - by @lilyswritings  The angst, and the angst. I cry, you cry, everyone cries. Unfortunately there is only the one part, but much to my personal joy that means I can interpret the after-ending however I want!
Frank Castle
(Un-Named) - One Shot - by @alexsunmners This is just cute okay? I have no other words except this was plain and simply very, very, very nice to read, and that it makes me feel very soft right here on the inside.
Peter Parker
Super Smooth Genius - One Shot (?) - by whirlybirbs  Back at it again with the cute, awkward, friendly, neighbourhood, Peter Parker.
Just Don’t - Soulmate AU! One Shot - by @papel-creativo What’d I tell you about soulmate au’s? I can’t resist them. And of course Pete being a caring bf with his hero s/o. So nice.
Ronan the Accuser
Make You Proud - One Shot - by @kayleighhalliday2203 This is justifiable because I was going through a Lee Pace faze and I found it and loved it immediately.
Ultron
(Un-Named) - One Shot / Series - by @snarky-badger This I can also justify having read, because (and if you know me then you know) the robot thing ... Doesn’t bother me as much as it should. And I binged all of it on ao3, so.
Tumblr media
Poe Dameron
(Un-Named) - Masterlist - by propertyofpoeandbucky Okay, I know there’s a lot on this list, and it could take you a while to get through it all, but trust me - it’s worth it. Lani likes Poe, and it shows. He’s written so well.
Dashing - One Shot / Series ? - by whirlybirbs Birbs does it again. She’s got Punchy!Reader, and if there were a legal way to get all of this Poe thing down into a written book, I’d do it.
You Can See Me? - Modern / Ghost AU! One Shot - by @tintinwrites I just this this one’s really cool. And what Poe does for the reader at the end? So sweet! He would totally do that!
Across the Hall - Modern / Nurse AU! Series - by @starryeyedstories  It’s cute, it’s fun, it’s got tension, and a little drama - plus a smidge of angst and Corgi!BB-8. If perfection were ever made into a Modern/Nurse au Poe fic - this would be it.
Deepest, Lightest Secrets - One Shot - by @writefightandflightclub  It’s got the humour and overall feel  you’d expect to come from something Star Wars related - honestly I had so much fun reading it, and I’ll happily do it again.
Tumblr media
Levi Ackerman
Names for Him & You - One Shot - by @commanderserwin Again, op is one of my main sources for fic’s in this area - so there could be quite a few of them listed here. But this one? Cute as heck.
Levi’s Secret - Modern AU! One Shot - by @theamberwriter This one was damn funny in my opinion. Nothing can ever be hidden from Hange for long.
You Look So Beautiful In White - Modern AU! One Shot - by @alrightberries This fic, it carved out my heart, diced it, shoved it in a blender, then made it into an atomic bomb. I - I was not okay. That amount of angst shouldn’t be allowed. Read it.
Abeille - Modern / Mafia AU! Series - by @ackermans-freedom-inc Honestly, this isn’t finished yet but, honestly, I’m not ready for it to finish. The heartache. The betrayal. The child. I can’t even.
Lights - Modern AU! One Shot - by commanderserwin This was the first fic I ever read of op’s, and I couldn’t believe what I read so I went back and read it again. I can’t tell you how much I love it, or how I feel about it, so just go read for yourself and you’ll know.
To Build a Home - Modern AU! Series - by @vennilavee If you’re a fan of Levi, you must go read this. It’s so detailed, and just so perfect - whenever a new part comes out I have a quick reboot before going to read it.
Erwin Smith
One of Us - Modern AU! Miniseries - by commanderserwin I’m not going to lie, this one is here because I requested it, but also because I really liked it, and cried while reading it. So there.
Reiner Braun
Service to the Crown - Medieval AU! Miniseries - by @present-mel It should probably be illegal to write Reiner or Medieval au’s this well, and yet here op is writing both. Like, McScuse me, where do you acquire such talent and can I have some?
Tumblr media
Toshinori Yagi
Flirting with All Might - One Shot - by @lemonlordleah-shinzawa-kitten Toshi. The great. The hero. The awkward. He’s a blond boy doing what blond boys do even if he’s a little older he’s still part of the crew.
Stitches - Villain AU / Mini Series - by @itsallmightbitch  Okay, so I said above that I wouldn’t put warnings on these - but this time I have to. Nothing I’ve read in my whole life emmits such an amount of pure horniness - and I love it.
Godless - Fantasy AU / One Shot - by @pleasantanathema  Another ‘All Smite’ fic, yes, I know. But god. They’re so good. This one is another real horny one, so if you can’t tell there is a slight theme running here. And - sksksksks - this is actually from the same ‘general area’ as the Reiner fic listed above (Service to the Crown). There was a event. I read everything.
Keigo Takami
Preening - One Shot - by @shoutaaizawas Literally the softest and cutest damned thing I’ve read for Keigo. No, I’m not just ‘saying’ that, it’s genuine. The feelings I get - or lack thereof due to them turning to mush - it too much for words. Honest.
Seasonal Special - One Shot - by @keiqos I’ll say this now and I’ll say it first - any Hawks fics written by op are *chefs kiss*. They’re amazing. Secondly, rut!Hawks is my weakness - this fic is one of such weaknesses.
Shouto Aizawa
(Un-Named) - Series - by @theamberwriter This is *technically* the second part in the series, but it’s the only part I’ve read and goddamnit, I’m in love. Hubby Aizawa. The disappearing Baby-Zawa.
Tumblr media
I Miss You Texts - SMAU - Kuroo Tetsurou, Bokuto Koutarou, Nishinoya Yuu - by @briswriting I miss them too. They ain’t dead. I just feel like I haven’t seen them in so long.
Little Things - Headcanons - Karasuno - by @haikyuudreaming Every single one makes me feel so nostalgic, and I feel so much longing. I love. I loose. I pine. I want. And yet I cannot have. I only dream.
Cheerleader - Headcanons - Karasuno - by @imagine-101  I want to be their cheerleader. Now I am able to be. Op, many thanks for the feeding.
Tsukishima Kei
Cherry Wine - Single Parent AU! Series - by @bakugou-jpg  I’m gonna head out and say that Tsukki was my first favourite Haikyuu character - then I ‘character developed’ but that only went so far as to give me more favorites. But deadass - read this and you won't regret it.
Ukai Keishin
(Un-Named) - Ballroom/Latin Dancer AU! Headcanons - by @imagine-that-haikyuu  I know nothing about dancing. Or ballroom dancing. But I do know I’d love to dance with Ukai. So how’s that for ‘middle ground’?

My 10 Comfort Films
Tumblr media
Movies have been a big part of my life for as far back as I can remember. And like any movie-lover, there are some I'll be more inclined to watch than others. Not my absolute favourites or the ones I think of as "the best movies ever" necessarily, but ones I'll always come back to when I have a free afternoon to watch them. And those are the ones I want to list out here. Films that might not be the objective best of their respective fields and franchises, but ones that I just always enjoy watching whenever they're on my screen.
The Isle of Dogs (2018) - Now, I realise that the visual style championed by Wes Anderson (lots of symmetrical shots, characters looking directly into the camera, and so on) can be a bit of an acquired taste, but it definitely works for an animated outing like this one. A story of a bunch of dogs living and trying to survive on an island covered in trash doesn't admittedly sound like the most appealing of movies, but let it never be said that Wes can't make film look good. Voice talent like Brian Cranston and Bill Murray help provide a deadpan style of humour that, while certainly not to everyone's liking, had me hooked from moment one. And of course, as someone who grew up with stop-motion animation, it's always nice to see someone try to keep that style alive, and yes kudos also has to be given to Laika for that. Anderson has only done one other animated work, Fantastic Mr Fox, and between them this is definitely my favourite. I have no idea if he'll ever return to animation, but I have a good feeling it'll be great when he does, because as unpolished as this might sometimes appear, it's nevertheless a great watch.
Porco Rosso (1992) - I may have watched a good number of other anime films in my day, but few have ever managed to match the enjoyment given to me by the movies of Studio Ghibli, and especially not against those of Hayao Miyazaki himself. In fact, I'll even go on record now and say that he might be my all-time favourite filmmaker, since he's never made a movie I didn't like, which I've never been able to say about anyone else. Porco Rosso might not have the kind of deep characters and story of Princess Mononoke, and it might not be anywhere near the sheer visual brilliance of Spirited Away, but it nevertheless engages me deeply whenever I watch it. Of all Miyazaki's films, this might have the fewest fantastical elements to it, with the only real bit of other-worldliness being that the main character is under a curse that turns him into a pig, but never let that lead you to think this doesn't have Miyazaki's signature whimsy all over it. Porco is often an overlooked and under-appreciated movie when compared to Miyazaki's other films, but as far as I'm concerned it deserves to stand alongside even the best of them.
Hercules (1997) - The Disney Renaissance is often lauded for its critically and commercially successful films, and rightfully so. From classics like Little Mermaid to Aladdin, this ten-year stretch of Disney's history has a lot to be pleased about. So it might seem odd that my personal pick from this era is the film often regarded as one of its lesser entries. And I'll grant you, compared to revolutionary films like Little Mermaid, this might not seem particularly special. But it still has a lot to enjoy, especially by me. Yes, the mythology buff in me does indeed wince whenever I see some inaccuracy, but the sheer joy I feel at watching Hercules always negates that. And of course, who could forget one of the most enjoyable villains ever to grace a Disney production, courtesy of the great James Woods. But don't think the movie is carried by him alone, as plenty of the other cast, including Susan Egan and Danny DeVito in particular, do great and making this a fun ride. Between the animation, the voice work, the often-catchy musical numbers and the simple pleasure this film offers, Disney's Hercules proves that it is indeed a hero, and not a zero.
Toy Story 4 (2019) - Toy Story was a groundbreaking movie that kicked down the door for the success of all future computer-animated films. Toy Story 2 was a more-than-worthy addition to the ultra-exclusive club of sequels that were better than the original. Toy Story 3 was a poignant and heartfelt goodbye to a franchise and cast of characters that we had come to know and love over the years. Let's not mince words here, people. Being tasked with creating another sequel in a franchise that had been capped off almost a decade earlier in a way that led many to calling it one of the greatest trilogies of all time must have been an exceptionally daunting prospect. But let it never be said that Pixar can't rise to the challenge when one is presented to them, as Toy Story 4 is a hugely engaging and entertaining flick. Is it as good as those that came before? Well, it's certainly not pushing any boundaries like they did, with the exception of the clear advances in animation that have been made, but even wit that taken into account, it's just a nice film to watch. The farewell given to us here might not have brought a tear to my eye the way the third movie did, but I'd still be happy to have this be the final word on the Toy Story theatrical releases.
The Avengers (2012) - Like everyone, I had been watching and enjoying many of the MCU movies that had been coming up in the years leading up to this big crossover, and like those other people I too had been learning about the eventual team-up through all the various end-credits scenes Marvel had become so famous for. But whether the eventual film would be good was still up in the air. I certainly hoped it'd be entertaining, but I also didn't want to get too hopeful, just in case. Thankfully, Marvel met my expectations and smashed through them, delivering what is, quite possibly, my all-time favourite superhero film. The idea of comic book continuity and crossovers working in a live-action movie had been thought of as almost a laughable notion, but Marvel proved those naysayers wrong in the biggest way possible, showing that not only were these movies capable of being good when all these disparate characters got together, but that they thrived while doing so. Avengers was the first of these big team-ups, and in my eyes it has remained the gold standard. Other entries like Age of Ultron or Infinity War all had their value, but to me nothing will ever quite measure up to this first meeting of such iconic and wonderful characters.
Star Trek Beyond (2016) - I'll be upfront, I wasn't a big fan of the 2009 reboot of the Star Trek franchise, nor was I particularly fond of its 2013 sequel, Into Darkness. For me the movies were just trying too hard to be serious and heavy, and while I fully acknowledge that the Trek fandom has a lot of people who enjoy the more gritty directions the franchise has gone in, I cannot count myself among them. Beyond, by contrast, actually seems like it wants to just be a fun ride, which is something I appreciate a great deal. This is not, in any way, a deep or complicated movie. In fact, when you get right down to it, what we have here is just an episode of the original Trek show just blown up to feature length with some modern-day visuals and cast. But you know, that's okay by me, as the end result was hugely enjoyable. Pine and the rest of the cast, in terms of their acting, seem far more comfortable here than they were with the other films of the trilogy, and special mention has to go to Zachary Quinto as Spock, who was able to perfectly balance not only the character's famous stoicism, but also the moments of drama and humour the role called for. This is not the greatest Star Trek movie ever made, but it's one I enjoy more than anything else in the franchise.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) - A common trend with me as far as Star Wars trilogies are concerned is that the first movie in that grouping will always be the one I enjoy watching most, and it seems that pattern continued with the release of Disney's foray into the franchise. Force Awakens is often maligned as being too similar to the original 1977 film, and while I can certainly see those similarities, that isn't anywhere near enough of a reason for me to dislike it. New characters like Rey, Finn and BB-8 were instantly endearing to me and I always enjoyed seeing the three of them together and working off one another. Harrison Ford's return was welcome and he definitely gave it his all, though Carrie Fisher was no slouch either. There's nothing especially revolutionary about this movie, and really the only thing that gets it on this list is just pure likeability. But as far as I'm concerned, that's all a movie needs. Abrams has a noted talent when it comes to recreating the look of sci-fi movies of past decades, and that talent is on full display here, as the movie looks right at home with every other Star Wars story out there. Disney's other films in this trilogy might not have brought me as much joy, but I'll always have this one to pick me up again.
Shin Godzilla (2016) - Okay, given that this is a list of movies I like to just watch while chilling, Shin Godzilla probably seems like an odd pick. I've talked about it before and mentioned repeatedly how it's probably the most serious and unhappy Godzilla film to date. So why go for this instead of something more exciting like King of the Monsters? Well, it's hard to put into words, but there's just something about this movie that draws me to it. It's one I respect certainly, owing largely to its goal of recreating everything that made the original Gojira movie great but putting it in a modern setting, but besides that there's just a quality that I can't put my finger on. Maybe it's the fact that, despite my previously-mentioned dislike of movies trying to be serious, this is one of the rare examples of that seriousness actually fitting the kind of film I'm watching. It's a movie of Godzilla at his most dangerous, horrific and nightmarish, and whose great terror is thwarted only by the collective efforts of a group of political, scientific and military misfits, yet I'm on the edge of my seat unable to look away throughout the whole thing. No idea if that rumoured sequel will ever come to pass, but I can only hope it's as engrossing as this one was.
Legend (1985) - By far the oldest movie you'll find on this list, this gem of a story by famed director Ridley Scott is a fairy tale of a young woodland boy hoping to rescue his fair love from a wicked demon. Now that sounds about as generic a fantasy story as you can make, and in truth the movie is more interested in creating as unique visual portrayal of that classic setup than it is in revolutionizing or pushing it in any way. But what a visual spectacle it is. It's really hard to put into words just what it's like to watch this movie, and most of the time it feel like you're watching some feature-length dream sequence. That certainly makes it an oddity among other fantasy flicks of its era, but "classic fairy tale executed perfectly" is a pretty good reason to love it. Thankfully, it also has some great performances to help bring that whole thing to life, with the star-making turn of course being that of the great Tim Curry as the movie's central antagonist. If there's a list of great movie fantasy villains out there, Curry's character absolutely deserves to be on it, and chances are he'll be the thing you end up remembering most if you ever decide to watch this yourselves.
Demolition Man (1993) - I'm admittedly not a big watcher of the big, muscly action flicks that dominated the 80s and 90s, but this one actually caught my interest a few years back. A film that, while certainly showing off some pretty intense fight scenes, also had a lot of smart things to say. Ideas that you didn't normally see in beefcake action titles, like the importance of the balance between personal freedom and the collective good. A society where murder has been eradicated, but at the cost of many of the things we know and love today. It might not be the best at that particular discussion, but it's certainly something to note given that I don't normally consider this particular genre to be the place to think about it. But of course the big draw is the two leads, Stallone and Snipes, and yeah they are definitely having fun in their roles. Stallone is a far better actor than most people give him credit for, and this is definitely a role I enjoyed watching him in, especially since they actually allow him to be occasionally funny. Any action movie that remembers that you need to tell a joke every once in a while has my respect, and it's just one more thing about this fine move to like.
So yeah, those are my regular comfort movies. Some odd choices maybe, but hey, I like what I like 🥰

Contraband
As promised, here’s my ficlet. its about Gudako accidentally terrorizing some poor mage
The Magus Association was coming in for their regular check on Chaldea. Which meant that Gudako was under explicit orders by Da Vinci to be on her best behavior, and by extension all the servants.
She’d been warned of the fact that Chaldea was already on thin ice with the Magus Association for saving the world from Goetia where they couldn't, something Gudako found ridiculous, but her history with Mages had already shown them to be petty to an extreme not even most servants were capable of. In any case, her task was simple: show the inspector around the second archive to inspect their magical inventory. The servants were all in their rooms and out of the way, and there were no recent accidents or property damage. Easy enough.
What she didn't account for was the inspector almost immediately popping a vein over their inventory.
“Do you KNOW what this is!?” Karl Zeplus, as he had haughtily introduced himself, had not taken more than ten steps before falling over himself. In his hands he very carefully held a Jeweled Sword Zelretch, doing his best to not move to much for fear of dropping it.
Gudako didn’t understand.
“Um, that’s just a Jeweled Sword Zelretch? What’s the problem?”
That was apparently the wrong question to ask, as the Mage turned several shades red.
“Just? JUST a Jeweled Sword-!? This is one of the personal Mystic Codes of the Kischur Zelretch Schweinorg, one of the most infamous Magus out there and can only be-!" He paused at her phrasing. "Wait, what do you mean a sword?” Karl promptly exploded and deflated in one breath.
“Well, we have more than one?” Gudako started as she walked over to a nearby crate and opened the cover. Inside, the Mage was witness to a full box of jeweled swords, all pulsating with power. “I still don’t follow.”
“What-HOW!?” Karl was shocked. How could this low ranking Cause have such an artifact? How could she have so many!? Did Zelretch support Chaldea from the shadows? Was there an internal leak within the Association? The reports received from Chaldea had indicated that the late Romani Archaman was responsible for the resolution of the Grand Order, but was that just a cover up? What could be going on-?
“I mean, they're cool but also kinda outclassed by some of the other stuff in here, so I don't see what's wrong.” Gudako idly stated as she picked one up and lightly slashed empty air with it, leaving a flowing arc of mana to fly a few feet into the air to dissipate. Karl felt one of his eyes twitch. Outclassed?
“So...can we continue?” The child had asked, looking up at him. Well, these inquiries could continue later.
“Y-Yes, let’s continue…” He squeaked out, barely finding his feet to follow.
Gudako could tell that something was wrong with him, but didn’t know what. Was this Zelretch guy important or something?
“Well, this is where we keep some of the more mundane mystic codes.” Gudako had pointed to an unsorted pile of equipment haphazardly laying on a table.
“Hmph. This should be better organized” Karl chided as he started to sort through them. Unknown to Gudako, he was having several panic attacks all at once.
‘What is with this collection of weapons!? There are some usual ones like those black keys and hydra daggers, but Fragarch, the Fraga Families ancestral weapon? The Yggdmillennia’s personal Bronze-Link Manipulator? A red staff…?’ Karl held the strange, childish looking staff up before he felt is wriggle in his grasp. Gasping, he dropped it.
“Huh? Oh, didn’t know we had an extra Magical Ruby. This can be useful later.” Gudako nonchalantly said as she swiped it from his hand and pocketed it. He would have scolded her for that action but his attention was brought to the silver vial he ended up grabbing.
“...Gudako. Is this a Volumen Hydrargyrum?” Karl asked calmly, turning to her.
“Is that how it’s pronounced? I always just call it-”
“Gudako. Do you understand that this is one of the most powerful modern achievements of Magecraft, created by and solely for the use of the Archibald Family? Do you?” Karl loomed over her, his expression crossed somewhere between anger and mania.
“...Yes?” Gudako wasn’t really scared of his expression, having dealt with more dangerous individuals daily, but she figured she could stand to not have the man explode once more. It probably wasn’t healthy for him.
“I don’t believe you do, but I absolutely must know. Where did you get all of these weapons?” Karl, while inspecting inventories, was also part of investigating the truth behind Chaldea. Even if the reports about Romani were likely to be true, all of these weapons from several different, high ranking Magus families painted a very different story.
“Oh, those are from summoning.” Gudako’s expression told him that she expected that to answer everything.
It very much did not.
“Summoning? As in the Chaldea Summon System?”
“Yeah, that thing.” She confirmed, and explained no further.
Karl was very much ready to head home, and hang himself in his workshop. Or maybe feed himself to some of the Chimeras he had recently acquired. Maybe feed Gudako to them instead.
“Well, while I have many, MANY more questions, I figure we should finish whatever this…” Karl didn’t finish and continued onwards.
Well, that probably wasn’t good. Ah well, Gudako figured it’d all work out.
“This is where we keep the special essences. Most of this equipment count as Craft Essences but these essences are like moments in time captured in a picture.” Gudako explained as she held up what looked to be several images of vaguely historical events.
The explanation flew over Karls head as he stared at the Mona Lisa staring right back at him.
“Oh, this is where it was! I’ve been looking for it…” Gudako went beside him and picked up the portrait, holding it below her arm and moving it to another part of the room.
Karl, starting to feel numb from the multiple shocks, simply decided to continue surveying. He noted the motorcycle strewed about, a replica of Gae Bolg (probably), a strange glowing blue cube that kept yelling ‘BB Channel!’, some strange vials labeled ‘Alpha’ and ‘Beta’, and…
A Holy Grail. Right there. Perfectly unguarded. Pulsating with magic power, though weirdly shaded at certain points.
Karl felt a surge of excitement rush through him. Could he take it…? It was right here.
The Zeplus family wasn’t very highly ranked amongst the Magus families, barely a second generation lineage. This Grail could change that. Yes, he could take it! He could use it to destroy these fools who dared think they could tempt him with all these artifacts! To hell with it! He would take it and-
And witness Gudako beating him to it.
“Sweet, a Black Grail.”
Karl numbly witnessed Gudako destroy his prospects of rising amongst the dredges of the lower families by grabbing it  and absentmindedly tossing the Grail into an unmarked box.
“Just two more and I can...Um, Karl, are you alright? You look kinda…” Gudako trailed off, unsure of how to proceed with him.
He was livid. Furious. Apoplectic with rage. This child was so idiotic. This child, this unwashed vermin who barely qualified as human, with no magic crest or notable lineage to them, had just ruined a chance the Zeplus family had at rising amongst their peers.
This child would pay. This child would pay dearly for daring to-
“Oh hey, is this that Zelretch guy you were talking about? It has his name on it. I never noticed, actually.” Gudako presented a card to him. Karl barely managed to look down at it before all his rage immediately faded into fear.
The visage of the Kischur Zelretch Schweinorg was present before him, but that wasn’t cause for concern. What was cause for concern was the fact that he could feel the barely restrained power within that card. What was it?
“...Gudako.” Karl managed in a clipped tone. “What is that.”
“It’s called a Kaleidoscope, or KScope for short.” She smiled at him. He felt like strangling her. “Da Vinci tried explaining to me about how it’s apparently a manifestation of True Magic or something but…” Karl didn’t hear past this part.
True Magic. In her hands, this child had True Magic that they could use to literally recreate reality. The True Magic wielded by Zelretch that let him draw power from other worlds and realities. The Second Magic, right here in literal arms reach.
He had enough. He marched over to her and grabbed her arm.
“Hey!” Gudako’s cry went ignored.
“Alright! Listen to me, you unwashed mongrel, you will turn over ALL these articles to-”
“And just who do you think you are calling a mongrel, mongrel?” A third, male voice had cut in, laced with venom.
Karl craned their neck up to see a shirtless man with golden hair and red eyes that looked ready to eviscerate him.
A servant?
“Gilgamesh! What are you doing out of your room? I thought I asked you to stay in for today! Did you run out of wine again?” Gudako turned to him, completely ignoring Karl as she effortlessly got out of his grip.
He was convinced that she was aiming to piss him off.
“Do not ignore me, child-!” He reached over to grab her again and was promptly met with multiple weapons burying themselves near him.
“Listen to me, Magus, your very presence insults me. Were it up to me I would have ripped you apart for daring to exist in my presence, but lucky for you, Da Vinci asked us to pick you up. Your investigation time is up.”
“Us?”
Behind Gilgamesh, Karl saw various different servants. All wielding their weapons. Looking at him like a target to slaughter.
“What the- Did none of you listen to me?” Gudako exclaimed, looking over the crowd.
“Ah, C’mon kid, you can’t seriously expect us to listen to you all the time. It’s no fun that way.” Beowulf casually strolled in, putting an arm around Gudako and casting a sideways, murderous glance at Karl.
“Yeah, who knows what could happen. Knowing you, you’d find a way to detonate all the explosives in here.” Hans cut in, tapping away on his tablet.
“No I wouldn’t!”
“Need I remind you of the Love Potion Incident?” Hans arced an eyebrow.
“THAT WAS FERGUS’ FAULT AND YOU KNOW IT!!!” Gudako shrieked at the shorter man, blushing furiously.
Karl couldn’t handle this anymore. He briefly considered turning around and swallowing a Volumen vial and downing it with some hydra poison before he felt something latch onto his arm. He looked down to see a fox woman holding onto him, digging her very sharp nails into his arm and giving him a particularly vicious smile.
“If you could follow me, we could take you to meet up with Da Vinci and all have a nice, private conversation.”
“Well, I-” Karl felt another set or arms grab his other side and felt the immediate need to escape.
“Now now, don’t keep the Director of Chaldea waiting. Maybe we could even teach you some manners about personal space.” A vampiric woman purred near his ear, faintly hearing the gnashing of fangs.
“But-”
“Stop wasting time and let’s go already. If we’re late for this meeting then we’ll miss our chance to pick for movie night and I don’t want to sit through another rom-com.” A dark haired woman glared at him, her glowing blue eyes glaring at him. Karl tried his best to pretend to not notice her thumbing the knife in her red jacket pocket.
“..Yes, let’s go.” Karl figured he may as well accept his fate and walk away with dignity. A dignity that was robbed when the two women effortlessly picked him up and carried him out.
“Um, see you later Karl?” Gudako called out uneasily, seeing the mob of servants pile around him and carry him away, leaving her alone. Eh, he’d live. Probably.
She let a few seconds pass before sighing audibly. “Alright, you guys could come out now.”
Gudako heard a few distinctive thumps of mass and a large, armored hand plant itself on her shoulder.
“You should be more wary, contractor. That man aimed to harm you. The only reason he yet breathes is because thou asked me to show restraint to...guests.” King Hassan looked down at her, blue flames flickering and occasionally turning red.
“Ah c’mon Gramps, I was fine.” She looked over at the various other Assassin class servants gathered around.
“Yeah, not gonna believe that. Had Goldie not intervened when he did I’d probably have cut his hand off myself.” Yan Qin jovially added, as if he wasn’t talking about horribly dismembering someone.
“...Be more careful. Mages are dangerous and unforgiving.” Kiritsugu whispered lightly, cleaning his knife.
“...Yeah, I know they are. But it’s fine. You guys’ll protect me no matter what.” She smiled softly at the man.
“You really are too carefree, master. Let us hope that Da Vinci or the others don’t murder that man for trying to threaten you. Hopefully she can proceed without issue now that he completed his inspection.” Danzou added.
“...Did Da Vinci plan on having the mage lose his temper with me and having an excuse to not invite any more of them over? Is that why all of you were here when only one of you would have been needed?” Gudako asked, suddenly suspicious of how carefree most of them were when a minute ago she was in danger. She remembered how some of them had planned a heist on a hospital from when she had a broken finger from a fall. Overprotective to the point of lunacy.
There was silence for a few seconds before they all vanished using their Presence Concealment.
“Of course…” Gudako sighed, entirely used to this type of chaos.
-
Unbeknownst to her, the Magus Association would receive the report of one Karl Zeplus, who had stated that Chaldea had no suspicious weapons or equipment. About two weeks later, he would retire from his job and move to America, taking all his assets and staying far away from the Associations reach, never to be heard from again.
While there was suspicion of a cover up, most of the files that had been received were somehow lost in a fire on the archive. The received documents had been noted to have some strange type of magecraft applied to them in order to reveal more information, and were placed in the archive for further review in the coming weeks. A nearby Magus was accused of having started the fire to damage some earlier records but nothing has been confirmed. There were reports however of a suspicious looking man seemingly warping into and out of the archive.
Reading over some of the redacted inventory and investigation reports he managed to smuggle, which Karl Zeplus had secretly modified as a cry for help, Kischur Zelretch Schweinorg, the Kaleidoscope himself, found himself rolling on the floor with laughter.

Art F City: An Interview with Brian Belott: Frustrating Expectations
Brian Belott at Gavin Brown
Brian Belott admits that he’s “anything but subtle.” The artist has carved out a reputation for creating exuberant over the top spectacles wherever he goes. Known for his wildly uninhibited paintings that vibrate with movement and motion, Belott also courts chance and accident in his hilarious, absurdist performances.
Belott’s latest project at Gavin Brown’s Harlem outpost expands on his 2015 show at 247365, (discussed with AFC’s Paddy Johnson here)— and is a multi-faceted homage to Rhoda Kellogg, a little known children’s art pioneer. Her obsessive studies innovated child psychology and contributed to the formation of the Montessori method of teaching that places its emphasis on teaching children based on their own individual interests and skills. By collecting over a million examples of children’s art over the course of her lifetime, Kellogg discovered that universal patterns and developmental stages emerge in all children’s art from around the world.
The sprawling, rambunctious exhibit comes to life in three parts. For the first part, Belott hand-picked approximately 300 pieces of children’s art from the Rhoda Kellogg International Children’s Art Collection, which is the first time that such a large portion of the collection has been shown to the public. The second layer features 50 paintings that Belott recreated on canvas, based off of Children’s paintings, and drawings. The third aspect of the exhibition; is an actual children’s art classroom that’s channeling Kellogg’s own approach, which allows children from around New York City to make art based on their own interests and instincts with very little interference or guidance from adults.
I had a chance to sit down with Belott to discuss the show, the impact of children’s art on modernism, as well as his own lifelong obsession with children’s art that mirrors Kellogg’s.
Irena Jurek: When you set out to create the exhibition, did you anticipate it being so complex from the beginning?
Brian Belott: I didn’t want to make a polite show. My aim was to create this dense, overlapping nexus of children’s art. It all started with my devotional copies of children’s paintings, which led to my interest in the wallpaper, the Rhoda Kellogg collection, the soundtrack from the found recordings, and then finally the outreach to the Ps1s in the local communities, and having work made on site.
IJ: When did you first start working with children’s art?
BB: I’ve always been interested in it. My parents saved a really big chunk of my own childhood art; I have around a couple hundred examples. When I first went to Cooper Union, I tried to dig this stuff up and copy it myself, but I found that to be a little loaded, because it was coming from my own psyche as a kid. When I finished my schooling at SVA, I found some garbage bags of children’s art on the street in the Lower East Side, and ended up making an entire series based off of it.
IJ: What would you say fueled your fascination with childhood art?
BB: Children’s art has always been a thread running through my production. It has to do with the nature of children, and their exuberance, overflowing of excitement, as well as their innocence. That unpretentious way of experiencing the world excites me. In school I was trying to figure out how to tap into that spazzy zone.
IJ: So in a way, your interest in children’s art has to do with the mentality of children.
BB: Absolutely. We still have ways into tapping into that mentality. When you wake up in the morning with an incredible amount of energy, and it’s almost spastic, like you’re bouncing off the wall! Maybe you have your first cup of coffee and you feel like a kid. When you make a crank phone call to a friend and leave a crazy message! Even going on vacation creates a different strata; the first day of vacation is jam-packed with excitement, because you’ve cut all strings to responsibility. You’re not thinking about limitations, you’re just thinking of soaring into a world of no expectations and pleasure.
Brian Belott at Gavin Brown
IJ: The modernists were also in pursuit of that childlike freedom and lack of self-consciousness that you’re talking about.
BB:  One of the most outspoken authorities on children’s art was Picasso. What’s funny is that his work never really became that childlike.
IJ: Definitely. He had that one quote on how it took him his whole life to draw like a child; meanwhile he was knocking off Ingres!
BB: It really doesn’t make any sense. Picasso was seasoned by a group of writers like Apollinaire and Gertrude Stein. He was so good at those zingers, and there’s no doubt he picked up steam from that milieu.
IJ: How did you come across the Rhoda Kellogg collection?
BB: When I was working for Donald Baechler, I came across one of her [Kellogg’s] books in his immense collection of books on children’s art. A great deal of the book was dedicated to scribbling and the early developmental stages of children’s art. Her contribution led to so much writing on the psychology of children and their first marks made. From there I started to find the rest of her books, and there were these incredible books on drawing, where she collected drawings from around the world. She was going around to multiple classrooms, obviously in communication with a whole string of teachers. It was really important for her to make the sample a large one.
That’s especially true when she focused on these early developmental stages of children’s drawing, you know, right after dribbling saliva, they’re scribbling and finger painting.  Her colleagues weren’t interested in these stages of development. They thought it was nonsense. What she found out was that before we get socialized, that every kid is essentially making identical drawings from around the world. Before we are socialized we are part of the same family.
Joseph Campbell was interested in comparing hero stories and myths—in finding a common thread between Christianity, Islam, and Hinduism. Rhoda was doing something identical through studying messy art making made by two to three year olds.
IJ: So through her studies she also discovered these implied shaped that are universal?
BB: Yes, through the act of scribbling, as the young human hand goes over the surface of the paper repeatedly, the drawing begins looking like a mish mosh or a web. What she started to see is that the arms like making squares, triangles, or mandalas. So what she pulled out of this gobbledy gook is implied shapes. Not only do you see our universal similarities in these examples, but you also see the beginnings of language emerging from children’s scribbles.
IJ: So essentially this is something that’s intrinsic and universal to human development?
BB: It comes directly from the motor skills of a human.
IJ: Aside from showing three hundred examples from the Rhoda Kellogg collection, you’ve also copied 50 children’s paintings, which you describe as being devotional.
BB: I actually returned to making copies of kid’s art while I was on vacation in Vermont in 2014. Having had all my responsibilities put on pause for a moment, I decided to make the copies once again. I love doing copies because it’s smooth sailing; you have everything laid out for you, it’s a matter of translating that onto another surface and thinking about the composition and its parts in relation to its colors. Once I started making these copies, I couldn’t stop.
IJ: You mentioned before that your colleagues were wondering why you weren’t riffing off of these paintings and using them as a springboard to make a different type of painting.
BB: Yes, and I wasn’t interested in doing that. I wanted to humbly make a copy. Quite a few people told me that I should blow up the scale, which would signal to the viewer that art had been made and something had been transformed. If you see a five or six foot painting done in a child’s style, you’re probably going to think that an adult did it, because of the materials children usually work with and the materials that are normally at their disposal. I wasn’t interested in any of the solutions that the holy white cube insist we do.
IJ: Another parallel seems to emerge between Rhoda’s colleagues’ reactions to her work, and your own colleagues’ reactions to your work. Stepping outside of accepted convention can often make people uncomfortable.
BB: I’m stubborn and I don’t want to do what’s expected of me. This should be a trait in all artists. At some point in their production, they should dig their heels and do the opposite of what’s expected of them.  Essentially any good joke or story is about frustrating expectations.
