It was an odd room. Not too big, not too small. With so many things to look at she could hardly decide where to start. One of the walls seemed entirely made up of books. And everywhere Rachel looked she noticed the framed pictures, the paintings, the plants; all of the quirky ornaments. Wedged between two armchairs was a side table in the shape of a funny looking cat, upon which sat two coasters, a television remote, and -- a pot of Play-Doh? A perfect mismatch of stuff. Rachel kind of liked it. It felt... cosy. It felt lived in.
Only it felt like she was intruding. Or at the very least like she was in the way. So she tried making herself as small as she possibly could, pressed into the corner of the room as she watched the two women discuss where best to put the air mattress. There was only one place suitable for it, really, but the two seemed so lost in their own conversation that she didn’t want to interrupt. Eventually, Marielle’s wife, Zelda, dragged the coffee table to the side of the room. The bed was rolled out across the rug, in front of the log burner.
“Oh yeah -- fits perfectly.” Zelda said, her hands on her hips. “Just needs inflating.” The woman looked at Rachel with such kind eyes that Rachel could hardly stand it.
Then, a cat appeared. Bumped the side of her calf with its head. It wore a collar with a bell on it, which jingled as it weaved itself between her ankles; purring loudly. Rachel glanced down at it, half unsure of it, and when she looked up again she noticed a dog, too. Sitting in the doorway. Head tilted curiously up at her. He was a big, blonde, dopey looking thing which reminded her of Marielle’s wife. How funny.
“Th -- thank you for this. Really.” Rachel glanced between the couple. “I promise I won’t be here for long. J -- just a few nights. And I’ll pay you. You must let me pay you for it...” Please. She didn’t want to be a charity case. “You’re both really kind.”

I’ve had an anon ask come in that I think is better answered with a photoset:
Any ideas for cheap or diy stuff for a subtle sensory room for an adult?
I’ll observe that I’m not the best at adult things because ... well, for an adult, I pretty much specialise in not being one by NT metric.
(I apologise for the dust in the above photos. I haven’t had the spoons for dusting in two weeks.)
1: Chenille bath mat. I found this one yesterday on discount, $10 AUD from Big W, available in several colours. The fronds are so big and it’s so soft and fuzzy. It’s so nice to stand on I don’t quite even! This can work as a floor mat in front of your bed or chair or even a foot blanket on a single bed. Also functional as a lap blanket. I’ve got mine tucked over my feet as of writing.
2: Chair or bed blanket. This one is a folded electric blanket currently on sale for $39 AUD at Aldi. (I know you’re not supposed to sit on an electric blanket, but it is honestly the only useful way I can use said blanket because I like to be able to move and don’t enjoy being wrapped up like a burrito just to keep halfway warm.) Any plush blanket will do for folks who don’t have my cold sensitivity, though - just something soft to make your chair or bed cosy. This blanket is really comfortable to sit on even when it isn’t running, and running my hands over the plush is very nice.
3: Candle oil burner. The one I’ve photographed isn’t that great - the basin is too high above the candle flame. It cost me $2.50 AUD from a dollar shop, though, and it has a deep basin, so I’ll use it until it cracks. Mine is on the window sill right beside my desk. The cost of candles does add up over time if you use the burner a lot, but you can buy those and blended essential or perfume/fragrance oils (about $2 AUD each) in dollar shops. The quality of these oils isn’t fabulous, but for not much money you get pleasant, relaxing scents while you work, read, watch, game or stim.
4: Kinetic sand in a glass jar on a shelf or dresser. Seriously, anyone who looks at this is going to think it’s just decorative. Nobody who doesn’t see you play with the sand on a tray or plate is going to even question this.
(Same applies for things like counters, dice, worry stones, glass counters, puzzle erasers. Even things like playdough and slime, as long as the neck is large enough for you to easily get a hand in and remove sand, slime or dough. Have it in a glass jar and it’s not a toy, it’s a display. I’ve got glass jars filled with water beads, puzzle erasers, bouncy balls, marbles, beads and buttons. I get nothing but compliments on these. Old pasta sauce jars work just fine, too; you don’t even have to buy these. My big ones cost $2 AUD each from K-Mart.)
5: Weighted lap pad/pillow. I’ve got a kawaii watermelon one because, like I said, I’m not terribly adult, but you can use literally any pillow case if it has a zipper or you’re willing to unpick a seam. Stuff it with a mix of something weighted - like rice, beans, decorative gravel, poly pellets - and poly/toy stuffing, because otherwise this will be too heavy for most. I also turned a duster mitt into a large weighted lap plush. My pillow cost $7 AUD from K-Mart; I only paid a few dollars for a bag of rice.
(You might also like to DIY a weighted blanket, although that isn’t like to be inexpensive, even DIY’d. Here’s a tutorial for a tie blanket, and here’s a discussion about weighted blanket fillers.)
6: Decorative or tree battery-operated LED lights. Mine are Christmas lights, but in that colour scheme they don’t look very Christmas, so I bluetacked mine to my shelves. Please note that in this, you want LED lights, not the very cheap tree lights, because the cheap old-fashioned tree lights put out a lot of heat as well as light. I got those on clearance after last Christmas for $2 AUD.
(Also, candles. Available in all the dollar shops. Relaxing and soothing, and also warm up a space a little in winter. Not as cool as colour-changing lights, but nobody’s going to think anything of them. Tip: light candles with a gas lighter, not a match. It’s so much easier.)
7: Stim toys in a fancy basket. Everything looks more adult when it’s nicely arranged in a basket. I think I paid $3 AUD for this pink plastic basket from a local dollar shop. You can also have worry stones or glass counters arranged on a plate or tray (like the oil burner photo above), too. Think things like fruit squishies arranged in a cane basket, for example - how different is that from a fake fruit or plant display?
(If you don’t want your toys to be visible at all, try putting them in a nice box - think those patterned cardboard gift boxes you get in dollar shops, as they’re only $2-$3 AUD each. The box looks pretty and everything is neatly hidden inside.)
I hope this gives you some ideas, anon. I don’t really have a lot of DIY ideas for room ideas as opposed to stim toy ideas, but you might also want to look through our tutorial collections (one and two) or our DIY tag to see if anything clicks for you!

1 - a blue chenille frond/bobble bath mat with large, oversized bobbles sitting on the end of a single-sized bed.
2 - a grey-blue plush blanket doubled over and folded over the front size of a standard computer office chair. A white-with-pink-handled dresser holding candles, glitter jars, sand art jars, a soccer-ball stress ball and a Monster High Elissabat doll can be seen in the background.
3 - a green and brown porcelain oil burner with a green body and a deep brown basin, both dusty and streaked with dried oil. Burner sits in a light pink floral dish with river pebbles and green glass counters sitting around the burner.
4 - a tall glass mason jar with a brass screw-top lid holding green kinetic sand. A small star-shaped jar in with a silver-coloured screw-top lid holds pastel-coloured water beads and sits in front of the sand. A brightly-coloured Hoberman sphere sits beside it, mostly cropped out of the photo.
5 - a pink triangular kawaii watermelon slice pillow with round black eyes and yellow seeds, all printed onto faux canvas, sits besides a green worm-like creature made from a chenille duster mit, a red felt tongue and black button eyes. Both sit on a night-time print bedspread.
6 - Two white wall-bracket shelves holding books, trimmed with LED lights in orange, turquoise and mauve, all in the shape of doves, hearts, stars and bells. Books on the shelves are by authors Tamora Pierce, J. R. R. Tolkien, J. K. Rowling, Lian Hearn, N. K. Jemisin and Isobelle Carmody.
7 - A pink plastic basket with cut outs from the plastic to give a pattern of birds and leaves, like that of songbirds sitting in a hedge. Basket contains Play-Doh, a fabric stress ball, a car-shaped chewable, a red apple squishy, a coloured slinky, an orange makeup blending sponge, a wooden nut and bolt, a cork and a smaller green plastic basket. Green basket contains a silver and a red camo spinner, three Tangle Jrs, a green hedge monkey, a brown hedge monkey, a purple/blue/pink snake puzzle, a blue hedge creature and a green edmame popper. A white basket containing coloured hedge balls can be seen in the background.

Darcy’s Meatloaf Sliders
It’s been said that there are two different types of people - those that like meatloaf, and those that don’t. I’m a meatloaf lover, and after trying this recipe, you will be, too. The original “Mini Meatloaf” recipe can be found HERE, but, as usual, I Darcyfied this thing to heck so get ready for it. Also, since I am so very charmingly American, I use American measurements. Google can help ya convert stuff. This recipe makes about 8 meatloaf patties - 4 per 9x13 pan. So you’ll either need two pans, or your patties are gonna have to take turns. ALSO BE AWARE THAT THE BEST WAY TO MAKE PATTIES IS BY STICKING YOUR BARE HANDS INTO RAW MEAT AND EGG AND MIXING THAT SHIT TOGETHER BEFORE SHAPING THE MIXTURE BY HAND (unless you’ve got a Burger Press) SO MAKE SURE YOUR HANDS ARE CLEAN, AIGHT? Aight, cool. Moving on. -----------------------
THINGS YOU NEED IN ORDER TO MAKE THE MEATLOAF:
~ 1 Egg ~ 3/4 Cup of Milk (I’ve used both 2% and Fat Free. Not sure how lactose free milk would work, but if any of you guys try it, lemme know how it works out) ~ 1 heaping Cup of Shredded Cheddar or Coby Jack Cheese (the cheese helps bind the patties so they don’t fall apart into Meatloaf Crumbles.) ~ 1/2 Cup Quick Oats (THIS DOES NOT MEAN AN ENVELOPE OF QUAKER OATS INSTANT OATMEAL. I’m talkin’ about the stuff that comes in the big cardboard tube/barrel thing.) NOTE: crushed saltine/oyster crackers can be used too. ~ up to 1 Teaspoon of Salt ~ 1 lb of raw Ground Beef
------------------------------- ~ GET THOSE DIRTY POTS AND SHIT YOU’RE HIDING IN YOUR OVEN OUTTA YOUR OVEN YOU HORRIFIC SLOB. ~ Preheat your oven to 350* Fahrenheit. ~ Grease your 9x13 pan(s). Again, the ratio of Patty to Pan is 4-1. That’s Four Patties in One Pan. And that’s terrible ~ Mix everything BUT THE MEAT together in a big bowl. Make sure that there aren’t any bits of eggshell in there because that shit’s gross.
~ Add the meat and get your hands in there. Squish everything around until it’s mixed thoroughly. Yes, with your hands. No, you cannot use a blender. ~ Form the Patties (here’s a how-to for the poor uninitiated souls who never played with Play-Doh as children) ~ Place those Patties in the Pans ~ Stick the Pans in your oven for about 25 minutes _____________________ Now, you may be asking, “Hey Darcy, what do I do while my meat is loafin’ around in the oven?” YOU MAKE THE SAUCE, OF COURSE! ______________________
Darcy’s Meatloaf Sauce
~ Brown Sugar ~ Barbecue Sauce (I use Sweet Baby Ray’s) ~ Ketchup/Catsup (they’re the exact same thing but I wanted to make sure everyone felt included) ~ a couple drops of Worcestershire Sauce  ~ lil’ bit of Pickle Juice Notice how I didn’t give you measurements for this shit? That’s because I just pour stuff into my (small) saucepan and keep tasting it until it’s acceptable. Some people like to add Mustard to it, but I ain’t about that life. General rule of thumb (for me) is 1/3 Sugar, 1/3 Barbecue Sauce and 1/3 Ketchup with a chaser of... Let’s say a 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire and 3 teaspoons of pickle juice. But y’all should do your own thing; as an old friend of mine always said, “Take chances, make mistakes, and get messy!” Meatloaf Slider Sauce is a personal thing, Fam. !! Make sure you take the pot off the burner when the sauce starts to bubble around the edges of the pot or you will ruin the sauce !! ------------------------- What to do when your timer goes off: ~Turn off the timer. Duh. ~Take the pan(s) out. Also Duh. ~ If the patties are cooked all the way through, Turn off your Oven. If not, stick ‘em back in the oven for another 5 minutes. Repeat as necessary. ~ If you’ve got a lot of grease in the pans, get rid of it by pouring it out into a cup or anything that IS NOT YOUR SINK OR TOILET, BECAUSE YOU WILL RUIN YOUR PIPES WITH THAT SHIT (You can transfer all of the patties to a single pan now if you want)  ~ Sprinkle Shredded Cheese on the patties. If you’re into that, that is. I am. I’m all about cheese. ~ Spoon your sauce over the patties.  You control how much sauce goes on these things - I use half of it at this stage and save the other half for serving, but y’all can do whatever you want. ~ Stick the pan back in the oven so the cheese can melt/sauce can glaze the patties while you complete the next step, which is... BUN PREP TIME! It’s like making a grilled cheese, only without the cheese. Or sandwich. ...It’s like making grilled bread. ~Take out yo’ Buns (or sandwich rolls, or Hawaiian Rolls - whatever you’re making these sliders on) ~ Slather the insides with butter OR mayonnaise (I use mayo because it makes the bread crispier) ~ Stick the carbohydrate of your choosing SPREAD SIDE DOWN in a hot frying pan and let it crisp up. Shouldn’t take more than 5 minutes. ~ Retrieve Patty. Place on Bun. Add more sauce if you want.

May 6.  The LWA image I intended to be in the coloring stage is still in the planning stage.  Pictured are two layers of the 7-8 layers of tracing paper I have going right now.  The obstacle is drawing Akko and Lotte’s hips and thighs in a way that doesn’t look like Play-doh anatomy.
I’ll be honest, I’ll probably put the LWA on the back burner and work on it in pieces here and there while I blast through images I’m more sure about, like Evangelion or Halo.

I met Pia once when we worked on a documentation project for DOH/WHO in Manila in 2014. We were roommates in the hotel for an evening, and in between trying to get our bearings sorted out, we talked and she told me she was a writer. I remember we were looking out the window watching the sun go down over Manila Bay and she asked me what metaphor I would choose for my life. I paused as I had never thought of the answer to that question before. She said she was a sunset. Something about each one being different from the other, about things ending but being born anew the next day (tbh I forgot the actual details). We didn’t get a chance to hang out again after that project, but today I found out she had just self-published a book of poems called “Manic Pixie Depressive Gremlin,” a sort of “eff you” to the film stereotype of pretty, quirky girls whose sole purpose in life is to cheer up ‘dem boys. You go girl!
Anyway, I found her spoken word performance of one of her poems, “I dare you to stay.” It sort of hit hard for me, so I am sharing the video here.
(The text is best appreciated when read with the video.)
This is for the 3 am poets This is for the midnight Youtube DIY video watchers This is for the true hour shower takers and the nightmares they relieve over and over This is for the dwellers This is for those who never outgrew their childhood monsters I dare you to stay
This is for the siblings of geniuses For the midnight oil burners who never got first place This is for class presidents who want to be muses This is for the pretty girls who never get picked for Valentines Fair marriage booths This is for burnt journal pages describing wish-list boyfriends This is for the reject pile of submitted works hall of famers I dare you to stay
This is for the shitty jobs This is for the even shittier time getting to the thankless jobs This is for those who have to hold three shitty jobs so their children will go to school with full stomachs This is for those who shoulder their family’s debts This is for those who just want to rest but cannot afford to die I dare you to stay
This is for the broken pieces This is for the fourth cup of coffee just to get through the day This is for the sweatpants who was there to hold when everybody else told you to sleep it off This is for the wall who held up even when you banged your head enough times to make it crumble This is for the empty speed dials and unsent SOS messages I dare you to stay
This is for the fallen heroes This is for the lighthouses that turned dark when the rain came This is for the pink slips and the door banging shut when you needed most a second chance This is for the “yeah let’s hang out sometime” and the “sorry I’m busy right now” after This is for the childhood monster’s voice in your head saying “nobody cares” I dare you to stay
This is for the misunderstood This is for those who cannot graduate because of a late final paper This is for those accused of theft for safekeeping a misplaced iPhone 6 This is for those singled out for those trying to do their shitty job well This is for those persecuted for pointing out things that should be changed I dare you to stay
I dare you to keep seeing through the tears To keep writing poems in a world you fear dominated by extroverts and personal branding Stay here with me
When the dead of night punches you in the gut Electricity flowing through your arms Leaving you gasping for grace Stay here with me
When you have lost your faith in God But know that He still believes in you Stay here with me
Stay here with me inside this poem that rocks you Back and forth Back and forth Back to mother’s fingers running across your scalp Like the blood coursing through your veins Like blanket forts and lava floors There were so many good things before you wished you could go Stay here with me
When your lips quiver when you smile, stay here with me. When all you can think about is “why,” stay here with me.
Back and forth Like waves crashing home This poem is yours.
Take off your military boots You can take off your pants too Because you are home You are safe here Nobody asks you to cheer up Nobody tells you to be brave Sometimes brave means eating chips all day Extra salty because they’re dipped in tears But it’s okay Nobody needs to understand you Nobody needs you to play a part But somebody out there needs you not to fall apart Even if it’s 3AM and everybody else is busy dreaming Somebody likes you for who you are, warts and all Somebody likes the same shit you obsess on Somebody will Wolverine your Jean Grey and remind you of home And stay with you so Calm down. Calm down. Calm down.
The sun’s coming up any minute now.

Synopsis ↓
I used to be bullied and it broke me down but it also built me into the ruthless bitch I am today.
I don’t take no prisoners and I don’t beat around the bush. People call me mean, heartless, and that’s exactly what I am; I’m not going to deny that. But what’s the alternative? A broken little mouse who walks along the side-lines? The one ignored and picked on for being quiet? The one excluded from activities because I just don’t fit in? Nah, that’s not me. That’s the old me.
Jemma Jade Jackson transformed her life after high school, now three years on and attending college, she’s changed her whole persona and lifestyle. She’s no longer the beaten but the beater. She’s no longer the cowardly tramp that sits in the corner. She’s ruthless, badass, and she doesn’t take no shit from no one, much less from bullies.
She’s nicknamed Tigeress; her roar is almost louder than her claws, but she embraces it. She embraces the fear she puts into people when she walks passed them. Covered in tattoos with bright purple hair, she makes herself as unapproachable as possible. Jemma is so full of hate that her aura is red and visible to everyone. She throws warning signals just in the way she carries herself and it’s taken three years to perfect.
Long gone is the goofy teen who let people hurt her, she’s a spanking new person inside and out and uses her assets to ruin men’s lives. She’s paid well to honeytrap stupid idiots who hurt their woman just because they can. Just like what happened to her.
But is her perfectly put together life about to be shook? Is her ice-cold personality about to be thawed? More importantly… is he ready to play her games?
#Excerpt
His finger traces the side of my neck and the shocks of electricity that zips from him to me makes me clench my jaw in an attempt to distract me from the contact. “You’re very persistent. I’m not interested.”
“Your body’s reaction tells me otherwise,” he whispers into my ear and a shiver skirts down my body, my toes curl instinctively and I have the urge to groan as his husky voice floats over me like another layer of skin.
“Back off, Damon.” My tone is cold, icy. I’m not familiar with these feelings racing through my body, every inch of me burning. It scares the hell out of me.
“Or what, Tiger?” His lips are whispering against my ear and I fight the fluttering of my eyelids.
