Melvin Feller Business Ministries Group Looks at Business as a Ministry
Melvin Feller Business Ministries Group Looks at Business as a Ministry
Melvin Feller Business Ministries Group in Burkburnett Ministries and Dallas Texas and Lawton Oklahoma. Our mission is to call and equip a generation of Christian entrepreneurs to do business as ministry. We provide workshops and resources that help companies discover how to do business God’s way and provide a positive outreach as the director. When the heart of a business is service rather than self it can be transformed into a fruitful business ministry earning a profit and being of service to the community and their customers. Melvin Feller is currently pursuing another graduate degree in business organizations.
The Greek word used for ministry in the Bible is diakonia (service) or diakonos (servant). Ministry means "to be of service" or "to serve." Therefore, I believe that business is an effective tool for serving others, from macro-level serving society to micro-level serving an individual client, customer, or work colleague. For believers in Jesus, all of life can be lived as service, including our business lives.
One might ask, “How do you get this business as ministry (or service) approach from the life and teachings of Jesus?" Great question. In two similar passages in the Gospels of Matthew and Mark, Jesus is teaching his disciples about the role of leadership and greatness, and he tells them this:
“You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant (diakonos), and whoever wants to be first must be your slave- just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many”. Matthew 20: 25-28.
Jesus turns the organizational chart upside down and says that those who want to lead must serve or minister to their followers rather than be served by their followers. In addition, this is not an isolated teaching of Jesus. In Mark 9:35, Jesus is again addressing an argument among his disciples about who is and will be the greatest among them. It is reassuring to see that human nature has not changed much is 2,000 years! Jesus tells the twelve of them, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last and the servant (diakonos) of all”.
In Luke, the gospel writer records a conversation between Jesus and the disciples that happened literally during the Last Supper (imagine the painting and this conversation), again regarding which disciple was considered the greatest among them. This time, Jesus contrasts traditional leadership with servant leadership, and uses an illustration very appropriate for sitting around a table to eat supper. Speaking of a traditional leader, Jesus says,
“But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules, like the one who serves. For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.” Luke 22:26-27
Again, turning the organizational chart on its head, Jesus puts the leadership emphasis on the one who serves rather than the one who is served.
However, is it relevant for today?
Okay, but how is business activity and management decision-making service or ministry? What is the connection between Jesus’ teaching 2,000 years ago and your business today?
Well, let us return to the idea of business at the macro and micro levels. At the macro level, business serves society, it is an organized activity, that meets the human needs of the many, and if done in a proper, sustainable way, it serves the common good. Stated another way, business enables human flourishing by stewarding all of God’s resources to meet the needs of the created world. When viewed in this way, it is not hard to see business as a high calling and management as a true “ministry” (diakonia) to all.
At the micro level, business affords the opportunity to influence for good many individual lives. This is done when we meet the needs of a single customer, a single client, or an individual colleague or employee on our staff. Meeting the needs of others through our business is a tangible expression of Jesus’ command to “love your neighbor as yourself”. The ripple effect of a business or organization that provides an income that sustains a family and provides the building blocks of a thriving society connects the micro to the macro levels. Business can simultaneously serve all of society and provide for the individual needs of many.
While it is significant that conducting business in a Christ-like way can provide global goods and services that meet the needs of society, there is more to my vision of Business as Ministry. As we conduct our business and management roles as service to others, I believe we are serving as the “hands and feet” of Christ in our local context.
An Expanded Role for Business in the Created World
It is through our organized human energy that God meets the needs of the world today, and if our businesses and organizations do not rise up to the challenge of meeting these ongoing human needs, quite literally it won’t get done. On the other hand, more accurately, it won’t get done in a just and sustainable way. We together are the hands and feet through which the Creator is providing for the creation.
Yet, beyond the provision of “our daily bread”, the eternal message of Christ to a fallen and broken world is that he came to redeem and heal the world and to offer grace and peace to those who will accept it. When Jesus came to serve, he also came to “give his life a ransom for many”, that is, to give the ultimate sacrifice of service. Conducting business as ministry gives followers of Jesus the opportunity to both demonstrate the love of Jesus through service, but also to share with others how to know the God who turned creation’s organizational chart on its head and sent his son to serve and save a broken world.

Wichita Falls 💔
Ok so I’ve been on a road trip since 1/1 - I went through Wichita Falls on my way to Colorado - the sunset was possibly the most beautiful one I’ve ever seen - the sky was almost red - i drove by Sheppard AFB which is where we lived the majority of the time that we were married - I had such a mix of emotions - it’s hard to explain - I was happy seeing things that I used to see with him 26-28 years ago & remembering our life together but I also felt an indescribable heaviness on my heart knowing what I’ve lost, what I gave up - it is so painful - I was just a dumb kid & I made a terrible mistake - such fleeting, bad, immature decisions with such permanent, gut wrenching, grown up, mature consequences - to think we were married 2.5 years & I was seven months away from being 20 when we got divorced - he turned 20 the month before we met - what a difference those years in age make - his daughter is 20 now, my son is 23 & my daughter is almost 14 - obviously I don’t know his daughter but I look at my kids & think about us & our relationship & it’s amazing to me that I was even as mature as I was - I will say that although I was not mature enough to handle being married, the love I had for him & the love we had for each other was very mature & very real - I just couldn’t process it & I took it & him for granted - I still believe he is my soul mate & I’ve never stopped loving him - once I sowed all my wild oats & grew up I knew I had ruined the only chance I’d ever have at real, true love that actually goes both ways - all that to say my road trip is coming to an end - I drove 11-12 hours today from CO to - you guessed it - Wichita Falls - driving in & seeing the names of all the surrounding cities that I used to hear on the radio & news & such at our house was seriously about to give me a panic attack - I felt like I was losing my breath - Ardmore, Altus, Lawton, Waurika, Archer City, Burkburnett, Vernon, Iowa Park, Henrietta, Decatur & the streets - Taft, Kemp, Kell, Midwestern & of course MSU (where I got my GED) & Sikes Senter (where we got our wedding rings from Mission Jewelers) - gosh the memories are so strong, so vivid, but this place has changed a lot too in almost 30 years - I don’t know if staying here will help or make things harder - just like...to think I haven’t showered here or slept here since 1994! Man - what a flood of emotions - I want to find him & reach out to him so badly - not to cross any lines - as hard as it is, I do try to respect the situation & everybody involved - I just wish we could be a part of each other’s lives to some degree - like communicate once every so often so as not to be total strangers - no one has ever understood me like he did & no one has ever made me laugh like he did - & even still he is the only person I wholeheartedly trust - he was the real deal & words can not express how much I miss him & us & how he treated me & how he made me feel...I will always be left wondering - how does he feel about me, what would he say if he knew how I feel, is there ever any chance we can be together again - when our marriage was coming to an end, I remember him always telling me that we would always be married in God’s eyes - I wonder if he still believes that - I will always wonder a lot of things - I will always regret a lot of things too...

A Poor Man’s Mach 1: 1969 Mustang Fastback
A classic Mustang came into Terry James’ field of view in a very unusual way. He was driving around Wichita Falls, Texas, waiting for the opportunity to take a photo of his old truck’s odometer as it flipped to 300,000. He said, “I turned down a street where the sun was right, took a picture, and looked up to see a yellow ’70 fastback in this driveway and kids playing football in the street.”
The front end of a 1970 Mach 1 was “sticking way up in the air,” in James’ words, so he thought that maybe the owner wanted to get rid of it. James asked one of the kids if he knew who owned the Mustang. It was owned by the kid’s father, Ben, who was home at the time. James said, “He came out and talked to me and said it wasn’t for sale, but he’d just bought a ’69 fastback from his preacher. He was just helping his preacher out, and if I wanted that car I could have it, but it was rough.”
This 1969 Mustang SportsRoof is a project car no doubt, but a very desirable one, and just what Terry James was looking for—a “blank slate” to build a modified.
The preacher’s daughter’s husband had owned the Mustang since 1990, but they needed to sell the car. The preacher, from Oklahoma, was the intermediary in the deal that sold the car to Ben, who now offered the car to James. Are you still with us here?
James was hunting for a blank canvas to work on, and this ’69 seemed to be exactly what he was looking for, so he made an appointment to see it. “I’m 58 years old and for years I’ve had Shelbys and Machs and all these really nice cars,” James said, continuing, “I always kept them the way Ford made them. I did that for five years in a 1969 G.T. 350 and loved it.”
The entire driver-side taillight assembly had been cut out, and with it the lip of the outer wheelwell.
James wanted to build his next Mustang just the way he wanted. He could modify a plain Mustang, born as a two-barrel 302/automatic, not a Mach or a Shelby or anything special, but still a hot-looking SportsRoof.
James met Ben in nearby Burkburnett, Texas, at an old shop, where they had cleaned out a spot in front of the door to shove this car between a ’71 Cougar and a Fox-body Mustang being set up for drag racing. Half in red and gray primer and half in multiple colors of purple and blue, the SportsRoof was “rough,” as described, and in pieces with the driver’s side quarter missing—but nothing fatal. James said the ’69 was “just what I was looking for, just a car.” So he struck a deal and loaded the car on a trailer bound for his shop in Wichita Falls.
The driver-side front end had been hit, damaging the side apron and radiator support.
His plan was to paint it Black Jade, put a black hood on it, Boss 302 blackouts on the decklid and tailpanels, no stripes, convert to a four-speed, and just enjoy it; but then fate intervened in the form of a Marti Report. James was intrigued to see this Wimbledon White SportsRoof came from the Metuchen Assembly plant with Black-Out Hood Treatment and Sports Appearance Group with Tape Stripe, turning the Mustang into what James calls “a poor man’s Mach 1.”
So, should James go back stock or modify? He hasn’t decided. Send us an email with your opinion. For now, James will do the body work and then sort it out mechanically. Then, he may just put it back exactly the way Ford built it. He likes that white paint with the black hood, which turns out to be extremely rare—just 46 built with these paint/trim codes.
The only rust was in the bottom of the quarter panel behind the rear wheel on the passenger side and the front floorpans.
The car was original except for the engine, which was a 1978 vintage 302 with 351 heads (in the trunk), an Edelbrock intake and carburetor, and Tri-Y headers. The transmission is from a 1966 Galaxie. The drum brakes are manual. The car has power steering and no air conditioning.
The intake and carburetor were sitting on the driver-side floor.
This Rare Find is a project, originally Wimbledon White with red interior, which had been sitting for about 20 years.
Terry James may go back stock with this ’69 SportsRoof because he likes the stock Black-Out hood treatment with the Wimbledon White paint—a very rare combination, and much like a “poor man’s Mach 1.”

ROCKEFELLER'S SECRET SUCCESS sauce
Continuing my drive northwest from Fort Worth, I took the smaller road on past Wichita Falls to Burkburnett, Texas. A hole in the ground there made history back in the day. Originally settled by ranchers around 1856 with a population barely topping 100 until 1912. That’s when someone poked a hole in the ground deeper than the wheat plants were planted. Much deeper.
Oil gushed up. Money rained down. People rushed in.
Roughly 20,000 people found Burkburnett on the map and set up tent camps around the oil fields.
I drove past two historical monument signs sticking up on metal poles along the roadside next to each other. Some iron and weathered wood contraptions lay behind the signs. Odd, I thought.
So, I turned ARGO around and went over to take a look. Turns out I was standing on a very important piece of Texas history. Important for two reasons. The first plaque commemorated Burkburnett, Texas for being one of the more famous Texas oil boom towns. I looked left, right. Just open agricultural fields. Didn't see any boom town.
Seemingly, all that remains of the boom part of it are the plaques planted there by the State of Texas. They mark the site where, nearby, a 2200 barrel oil gusher was struck on the S.L. Fowler farm setting an oil boom in motion. Incidentally, the term, "gusher," is used because these wells were drilled before the advent of pressure control systems. When a high pressure oil reserve underground was reached with the drilling bit, it literally gushed up through the drilled hole into the air. Some times the pressure was so great the pipe would be blown right out of the ground launching it toward the clouds.
I did see later that there were still a few pumpjack's bobbing up and down next to the rusty wire fence line further up the road. After all the years, the aging iron piston pumps are still producing and earning their keep. Some old timers call those pumps nodding donkeys, thirsty birds, crickets and such. Growing up in Texas, my friends and I called them Iron head horses. Iron head horses ... bowing to the ground for the Texas Tea, then raising their heads to Heaven to give thanks.
So why should you care? Well, pause for a moment and think about it. Wherever you live in this modern world your life would be very different right now if this and other oil gushers similar to this one hadn't happened. Different on multiple levels. For starters, you wouldn't be reading this on whatever electronic device you are reading it on. I'll leave the rest to your imagination. And, it goes without saying, if those huge oil strikes had not happened in this state, Texas would be a way different place; a lot more cows and a lot less Dallas and Houston.
Behind the historical plaques lay the remains of a few well worn parts that made up the body of the first drilling rig used there. An iron and wood testament to the black gold that came forth from the earth. A testament to the people who worked the wells to capture the resulting riches. A testament to the joys and conflicts that came with the riches.
One of the resulting conflicts was a big 'un. It was between the neighboring states.
Texas and Oklahoma’s border had been the Red River since the Spanish colonial days. Didn’t much matter where the exact boundary line was located, in the middle of the river or either bank of the Red River … that is, till oil was discovered in Burkburnett.
And yes, that leads to the second main reason Burkburnett is an important part of Texas history ... and … Texas geography.
Yep, you guessed it. Burkburnett was a spit and holler from that Red River. It took the Supreme Court to decide the matter in the early 20’s. "And dang it," Texans would say, "those dang Yankees up in DC gave away part of our state when they made the south bank of the Red River the Texas border." (I used the colloquialism, "dang," in case any children or Baptist are reading this far.)
This Supreme Court decision even had an impact on sports. Well, let’s just say it helped add a little fuel to a certain college football game rivalry. The one played out each year between the Texas Longhorns and the Oklahoma Sooners. A story all by itself for another time.
By the way, Hollywood got in on the action too. A movie was made about the rip-snorter wildcatter history of the area bringing worldwide fame. It was based on a book, Lady Comes To Burkburnett, written about the goings on there during that period. The movie Boomtown, starred Spencer Tracy and Clark Gable. Movie goers got an up close and personal romanticized view of the Texas oil gusher years and Burkburnett’s role in it all.
And better yet, on the scholarly side, some historians point to this period of gigantic oil discoveries in the Lone Star State as the starting point of the "World's Oil Age. They site Burkburnett's gusher, along with the even bigger one that proceeded it, the "mother of the gushers, Spindletop, near Beaumont and, of course, the humongous East Texas discoveries that made H.L. Hunt a very happy man. And a very very rich one. These historic oil finds and others around the state got everyone's attention worldwide in one way or the other.
Finding money in the ground, like say, in the case of gold and oil, gets people thinking when they here the news. And that kind of news travels fast. (Almost as fast as bad news. Almost.)
John D. Rockefeller wasn't from Texas, he was born in upper New York state and lived in Cleveland. But he could read a newspaper. And, having been an assistant bookkeeper, he knew enough math to add and multiply.
Barrels of oilxlots of money per barrelx lots of barrels of oil = lots and lots of money
So, nearly everyone who played a role in the oil booms in someway, but businessmen watching from afar like Rockefeller reaped the big riches eventually. I mention him because he ended up controlling ninety per cent of all the oil in America at one point.
“Rockefeller once explained the secret of success. ‘Get up early, work late … and strike oil.” According to Joey Adams. Well, that's exactly what happened in Burkburnett, Texas. People got up early, worked late and struck oil.
By the way, some historians who have studied this period of oil history and Rockefeller, suggest you might add a dash of greed, or maybe a cup or two, into Rockefeller's "secret success sauce." But that's "a whole 'nuther story."
And so, it’s on down the road I go. Driving past the oil fields and the wheat fields, and through the history of it all. Heading west.

In the modern era, many home buyers do not forget the usage of wood laminated floors and wallpaper in their homes. Many electric domestic appliances are used In the kitchen, such as microwave oven, fridge, mixer grinder, induction oven, cooking variety, and so forth. It is a great concept to opt for a spacious Restroom where you can hold your washing system.
Patient Rights – Top Ten List Of Most Violated.
Advent
Affected person rights are under siege, as evidenced in a current survey conducted with the aid of the Countrywide Institute for Affected person Rights (NIPR). NIPR team of workers compiled the consequences based totally on responses from one-thousand randomly decided on, former medical institution sufferers who took element inside the have a look at. The results of the survey display that, despite billions spent on advances in clinical technology, patients day by day experience an erosion of their rights “at the health facility bedside.” Ironically, it could be a result of the fulfillment of technology in the remedy.
Amongst the ones responding to essay questions, the following turned into a normal state of affairs. A clinic admits a cherished one with “complications” (a clinical euphemism for “we without a doubt don’t know all it is occurring here, however, there are numerous organs worried”). Whilst the cherished one rests solidly in the mattress, a line of doctors and nurses appears to shape at the door. One after another, doctors input the room, make some feedback, then turn around and go out. Number one care physicians refer sufferers to experts who depend upon subspecialists. It looks like each separate organ has its own special health practitioner.
inside the fitness care industry, that is normally referred to as “element management,” which ends with a focus at the remedy of individual organ systems in isolation from others. It suffers from two shortcomings: (1) experts and subspecialists have a tendency to segregate organ structures on the cost of the whole Patient; and (2) it’s far inefficient, because it unavoidably results in “episodic intervention” where if something occurs, you spot one expert for a selected organ gadget; if something else occurs, you then see some other expert or subspecialist, and so forth.
Episodic intervention leads unavoidably to uncoordinated care that lacks continuity for the Patient and for the Affected person’s circle of relatives. Many man or woman decisions in Patient treatment with the aid of numerous professionals and subspecialists entail a fragmented shipping system. According to the findings of the NIPR study, this results in the primary hassle in contemporary healthcare transport: a failure to talk.
PIECING Collectively BITS OF Information
The examine indicates health care suffers from a decided loss of coordination and cooperation Amongst various healthcare experts. Individuals inside the survey continually stated that with nobody to deal with the entire Patient and coordinate care, patients, and their families are left in large part on their own to combine their very own care. In step with one respondent, “We needed to come what may piece Collectively bits of Statistics from one-of-a-kind docs to try and get an entire image of our mother’s progress.”
This will be very hard to do in a clinic setting and extraordinarily frustrating. Contributors inside the examine frequently said that nobody regarded willing to tell them exactly what was taking place with the whole Affected person. doctors had been more than willing to proportion Statistics approximately their specialty, about exactly what become happening with their particular organ device, however, no person regarded particularly inclined to mention anything about how the entire Patient was doing.

We’ve managed to make it to just outside Quanah Texas before running into an issue with an axle on our 5th wheel. I had noticed an increase in tire temperature on my EEZ Tire minder and began watching the tires as we sailed along Texas 287 toward our destination, Amarillo TX. We had been talking just before this issue occurred how thankful we were that these Texas highways, not just the interstates but their secondary roads, are very well maintained. Anyone who has driven through Louisiana then into Texas really appreciates and knows what I mean about the roads.
Our coach is in the background on the far right
Anyway, apparently the seal on the bearing failed causing the grease to leak out and then the bearings to fail. Actually the whole thing just sort of fell apart when I pulled over just short of a rest area. I called Good Sam Roadside assistance and they were quick to send out a maintenance guy named Steve from Quanah ( Quanah Service Center, Quanah Texas 79252 ).
Steve checking the serial number on the axle
The Texas Department of Transportation were at our side, three trucks, before I could get off the phone with Good Sam Roadside Assistance. You know despite bad things happening to you, sometimes you get to meet some fabulous people and we did in Steve. Between his excellent service, the help received from Good Sam Roadside Assistance and Extended Warranties ( @thegoodsamclub ) and they were able to put us in touch with both Jayco ( @jaycorvs ) and the actual manufacturer of the axle, Lippert Systems (@lippertproducts ) and despite all the phone calls I was treated very well and their offers of assistance were gratifying.
We’re hoping that our mechanic Steve will be able to locate the parts necessary today so that we can be on our way as soon as possible. Today’s high temperature predicted at 91 with a sustained 30 knot wind from the Southwest sounds like quite a challenge. We’ve managed to hook up to the rest area’s power and despite only pulling about 20amps we have enough to power the living room’s a/c making living more enjoyable. With our fresh water tank filled as we left the KOA in Burkburnett, Texas ( @Koakampgrounds ) we have plenty of water and supplies to last a few days without too much panic
A sign you don’t see too often
Being “camped” at a Texas Rest Area (Hardeman County Rest Area ) is not for the meek, but this place is manned 24/7 and the lighting in the area is wonderful; almost like day-light during the nighttime hours. We’ve had to delay our arrival at a few places we had planned and made reservations along the route, but most campground owners are very accommodating in changing or cancelling reservations.
Coach again on the right – check out all the lights
The one thing I did not have (because this would never happen to me I’d tell Monica who now gives me the “I told you so” look) are the emergency triangles to place behind the coach to warn incoming traffic. Steve let us use his and he even placed them behind the coach for us. He gave us his card and told us to call him anytime throughout the night if we needed anything. Super service from this gentleman and my hat’s off to the people of Texas and their assistance.
Wide Open Spaces We've managed to make it to just outside Quanah Texas before running into an issue with an axle on our 5th wheel.

Anyone working in a “secular” job will be tempted to think of work as less significant or less God honoring than that of, say, a pastor. I have struggled here, and over the years I have met many others who struggle with a sense of purpose in their daily work — wondering if they need instead to give themselves to pastoral work or Christian ministry in order to truly “do God’s will.”
Done rightly and in the fear of God, ministry is an excellent God-honoring vocation, but ministry is not the only work that can be God honoring. So often businesspersons like me think this way because we fail to really take hold of the doctrine of vocation. To put it simply, vocation is the specific work that God has called each of us to do. In addition, vocation is not limited to those who serve in Christian ministry.
In fact, God calls the vast majority of Christians to “common” spheres of work such as business, or academia, or carpentry, or law, or healthcare, or homemaking. As we faithfully give ourselves to this calling, we are God’s agents to love others and to even accomplish his will on earth.
Assuming your work is honorable and honest, assuming it is a means to serve the needs of others, that work is ministerial in nature. In that sense, your work is no different from that of a pastor or missionary.
Here are three reasons that our work is ministerial.
First, our work is ministerial when our labors are first an avenue of faith in God and worship of God, not in self-reliance and personal glory.
In short, our work really is not about us. Paul spells this out in Ephesians 1:11–12:
In him, we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory.
For the Christian, life and work is not primarily about the self — self-achievement, self-accolades, or even self-wealth, or a surplus of monetary rewards. A Christian’s labor is foremost about working in a way that expresses faith in God and worship to God. It is in the way we conduct our work and the substance of our work that provides us with a means to proclaim his excellences.
So what does this look like? It will appear differently for each of us. For one, working to the glory of God might mean celebrating God’s kindness in the outcome of a successful project. To another, it may involve trusting God in the midst of difficulty and even failure. In my career, I have experienced both (but the latter being more challenging). Yet, it is trusting God during those challenging circumstances that speak most loudly of the rich sufficiency of knowing Christ.
Second, our work is ministerial when it serves other people rather than mere projects or profits.
People, made in the image of God, matter more to him than profits. Our take-home commission is not as important as Christ’s commission to love our neighbors in the workplace. In addition, that means we must seek the interests of our coworkers, our customers, and our business partners.
For me, this is a simple, but too easily forgotten truth. In the urgency of my day, I frequently forget the people around me, viewing my day as nothing more than a series of tasks to check off. When I adopt that task-oriented mindset, I easily overlook the people that God has placed in my path. In my thoughtlessness, the people in my workplace quickly become incidental to my day, or they are misused as either resources for my personal gain or hindrances to my personal productivity.
As a Christian, I am called to love my neighbor, and God has given me a workplace where he intends for this to happen. Therefore, in this setting, taking the time to encourage a co-worker is ministerial. Going the extra mile to help a customer is ministerial. Serving your manager by providing an update report is ministerial. When we accomplish tasks, even the most mundane tasks, with a heart of serving and loving our neighbors at work; we are instruments of God’s kindness to them.
Third, our work is ministerial because we are ambassadors of Christ to the specific realm of work he has called us to do.
We love our neighbors best when we bring the good news to them. Like Paul, we must see ourselves as ambassadors, bearing the message of reconciliation to an unbelieving world (2 Corinthians 5:20).
For many years, I viewed my career in the coaching /consulting industry as incompatible to “Christian ministry.” During those years, I failed to appreciate the privilege of representing Jesus to my co-workers and my customers. I wasted my vocation, and I overlooked the fact that God has called me to represent him in the business realm.
You are not in your present career by accident. It may have felt as you landed there due to random circumstances, but God has been sovereignly guiding you. Your line of work is no accident. Your workplace is no accident. Your vocational ship has sailed to where it is thus far because God has been guiding you. He has placed you where you are because he has need of you — or, better, as Luther puts it — your neighbor has need of you. May we joyfully and faithfully pursue this high calling of God.

Melvin Feller Looks at Low Self Esteem and Why You Want To Please People
Melvin Feller Looks at Low Self Esteem and Why You Want To Please People
Melvin Feller Business Group in Burkburnett Ministries and Dallas Texas and Lawton Oklahoma.
One common trap that causes people to suffer from poor self-esteem is the need to please people.
When you were a child growing up you probably sought the approval of your parents and chances are when you did something they did not as if they got angry with you and maybe you got into trouble. That is where this all starts. Many people spend their lives trying to please people and make this their main aim in life.
This way of living causes many problems for you. Why?
Firstly, by trying to please other people, you may ignore your own wishes and this will make you feel like a victim. You need to have a balance between your own wishes and those of others. When this balance tips over so you feel like your whole life is controlled by your need to please everybody, the result is not only stress and unhappiness but also low self-esteem.
If you suffer from this problem and want to break free then you need to do several things.
The first thing you must do is ask yourself why you are trying so hard to be liked by everyone else. Let me ask you this – do you think it is even possible for everyone to like you? How difficult is it to keep everyone happy?
Pleasing others means you start to forget how to say no. If you try, you will feel guilty. Maybe you believe that a good person thinks of others more than themselves. Well, yes up to a point. If you want to be a saint then go ahead but remember that you can have a balance where you continue to think of others but give your own wishes and desires higher priority.
Self-esteem means valuing yourself and that means being a friend to YOU. Weigh up your own needs against those of others and understand that you simply cannot please everybody.
Pleasing others all the time can give you a victim mentality and that is no good for you or for others. If you believe you are a victim then even though you try you will do things for others and feel resentful and this will give you low self-esteem. Stop feeling like a victim and learn to say no. Put your own needs first, that is not selfish because if you do not look after yourself you cannot be a good partner, wife, husband, parent or whatever. Learning to say no and to stand up for yourself will boost your self-confidence too.
Now many people pleasers try this and go to the extreme so be careful. Do not become the opposite and ignore others completely as this kind of reaction is just as bad. You are looking for a balance.
How to stop trying to please others
Here are some suggestions:
Know yourself – this is the first step towards self-awareness. When you know your own wishes and goals then you can decide to make it a priority to doing what you want to do in your life and restore balance so that you put your needs forward.
If you have been looking for the approval of others and spent your time trying to please everybody but yourself you need to do one very important thing. You need to look for your own approval. What is more important, what others think of you or what you think of yourself?
Become your own friend. You need to start taking care of you. The first and most important step towards becoming your own best friend is self-acceptance. Be happy with who you really are and then you can learn to like that person.
Set your own boundaries and stick to them. You decide what your priorities are. What do you want to give your time to? You have the right to decide and you have the right to say no to others. Create your boundaries so that you allow yourself time to fulfil your needs and allow that balance between saying no and helping others to develop. There is no need to feel guilty about these boundaries, as they are necessary.
So stop playing the victim and no matter what your past has contributed to your need to please people, you can change. Your new attitude will bring more happiness, confidence and self-esteem into your life and you will be a more balanced person.

Melvin Feller Discusses Being Right
Melvin Feller Discusses Being Right
Melvin Feller Business Group in Burkburnett Ministries and Dallas Texas and Lawton Oklahoma. Our mission is to call and equip a generation of Christian entrepreneurs to do business as ministry. You are a human and so am I. There is no argument there. The sky is blue and the grass is green. There is no argument there either. After all, they are FACTS, and we are all in agreement with them. However, why do so many of us have a need to ‘right’ regarding OPINIONS? Another driver cutting him off outrages a man driving in LA. In his opinion, the driver who cut him off is unbearably rude. “I’ll show him,” he thinks, as he now tries to cut off the ‘rude’ driver. This incident explodes into a full-blown case of road rage, which leads to an accident and the death of the outraged driver. He might have been ‘right,’ but now he is dead right. Does it make any sense to fight to the death over an opinion? Besides, how could the dead driver be ‘right’ when his behavior was wrong?
An obsessive need to be ‘right’ is irrational, but, sadly, very common. For instance, what makes one believe that our neighbors are incompetent to think for themselves and need to be ‘saved’ by our own brand of religion? In addition, if they refuse to recognize our merciful God, we can always kill them! It is like an anti-abortionist who preaches about the sanctity of life and then murders a doctor who performs abortions. Why do we kill one another for having different opinions?
Some of us get easily upset in the workplace. We insist that others do things the ‘right’ (our) way. Yet, isn’t it more important to do the right thing than do things right? The high divorce rate suggests that married life is another arena for the clash of opinion. Something as trivial as how one’s spouse
s squeezes the tube of toothpaste is enough to cause anger in some people. Quick, answer this question. What is the ‘right’ way to squeeze a tube of toothpaste? From the middle or from the end of the tube? Well, half of those who were surveyed in a university study answered, “From the middle,” and the other half said, “From the end of the tube.” Therefore, no matter which opinion you hold, you were not ‘right’ in the mind of half of those surveyed. Can you see how ludicrous, how irrational, it is to demand that others share our opinions?
There are many reasons to give up our addiction to being ‘right.’ First, consider what we are doing when we make pronouncements that you are either for me or against me, or that it’s my way or the highway, or that I’m ‘right ’ and you’re ‘wrong.’ Aren’t we being arrogant, combative, self-righteous, presumptuous, judgmental, narrow-minded, and alienating? Aren’t such attitudes divisive and dysfunctional? Don’t they disrupt harmony and peace and lead to conflict and suffering?
When I insist that I am ‘right,’ I slam the door of my mind. I remain locked in past beliefs. I stop growing. I have a shallow understanding of the world and limited choice. However, if I change my focus from what IS ‘RIGHT’ to what IS something magical happens. The moment I accept the fact that others have different views and willingly consider them, rather than fight them, I am transformed. Transformed from a prisoner to an adventurer and explorer. By opening myself to all ideas, I open my life to infinite possibilities. In addition, on that day, I discover what it is to be rich.
To be dead right is to be dead. To be cut off from the limitless wealth of life. It is also to be unhappy. For it is impossible to control the thoughts and opinions in the minds of others. So, when they fail to live up to our demand for agreement, we feel frustrated and disappointed. Does it make any sense to follow the road to unhappiness?
If the demand to be ‘right’ is self-defeating, why do we engage in it? One reason is the discomfort of uncertainty. Living in a world of uncertainty makes some feel like the earth is crumbling beneath their feet. There is no stability, nothing to hang on to (except their opinions and beliefs). Yet, when we change our perspective and think of uncertainty as surprise, wonder, awe, growth, opportunity, and delight, we can embrace it. Another reason for tenaciously clinging to our opinions is the fear that changing them would lead to the loss of our identity.
However, we are not our opinions. We are people who hold opinions and can let them go if we choose to. When we learn from others, we do not lose our identity; we expand, enhance, and enrich it. A third reason for wanting to be ‘right’ is low self-esteem. Some need to show off their ‘superiority’ to compensate for their feelings of inferiority. They are afraid of appearing stupid and need the approval of others. Nevertheless, the way to grow superior is by opening one’s mind, not by closing it.
To awaken from the delusion that our opinion is the only ‘right’ one, all one has to do is study history and the evolution of science. For when we do, we will quickly learn that we are fallible creatures. Even the brightest minds changed their opinions on innumerable occasions. In fact, that is how they grew so bright, by integrating opinions that at first appeared diametrically opposed. In addition, by willingly adding the opinions of others to their own. They were not afraid of accepting new ideas and making mistakes.
Here is how Lewis Thomas (1913 ~ 1993) explains it in his book THE MEDUSA AND THE SNAIL, “Mistakes are at the very base of human thought, embedded there, feeding the structure like root nodules. If we were not provided with the knack for being wrong, we could never get anything useful done. We think our way along by choosing between right and wrong alternatives, and the wrong choices have to be made as often as the right ones. We get along in life this way.”
When the populace of a certain village were evenly divided on the ‘right’ way to punish a disobedient child, they decided to seek council with the village elder. The representative for Opinion A gave his view to the elder. As the others listened in silence, the elder spoke, “You are right.”
While maintaining his decorum, but visibly upset, the representative for Opinion B said, “But Wise One, you have given your counsel before hearing from me!” He then shared his opinion with the elder. After listening to it, the Wise One said, “You are right.”
“But, Honorable One,” protested another villager, “you have just agreed with two opposing viewpoints!”
The Wise One turned his way and said, “You are right.”
We can never be right until we realize everyone is right. The truth is owned by none and shared by all. Whether you agree with this or not, “You are right.”
That is the great thing about business. We canal agree and if we do not we start a way to create something for people that require something different!

Melvin Feller asks if Your Business has These Time Management Tips

So you think you’re organized? Maybe that’s true of your dusty, messy desk that you cleaned up just the other day. Windex, Pledge, a few file folders and a shredder can work wonders, it’s true. However, have you given the same degree of thought to organizing your time?
Getting added value out of the oh-so-limited time you have at work can be critical to your success. Why not add to your list of New Year’s resolutions the commitment to manage your time more effectively?
If you are anything like most other home-based or other small business owners, wearing different hats and jumping from job to job and task to task during the course of a single day or even a single hour is commonplace. Running so fast and furious all the time, you may feel like a bit more focus on maximizing your efficiency and productivity is in order.
As we, all know too well, there are only 24 hours in a day. Given this tremendously inconvenient limitation, I submit that this whole concept of “time management” is actually a misnomer. After all, you cannot ever really manage time…it just marches on and waits for no man (or woman), right? What you really need to focus on is how to more aptly manage yourself.
Managing yourself requires dedication, a plan and focus, which then pay off in the form of greater productivity and hopefully more revenue. Increased profitability is often a great, potential side effect of better self-management.
So, how do you “manage yourself” more effectively, and what steps can you take in this direction? Here are my tips to better self-management:
First, you’ll need to have a realistic understanding and appreciation for exactly what it is you do in a typical one-week cycle, what activities you make a priority and why. If you have not ever taken the time to map out your workweek, you may be in for a shock. Oftentimes the things that take up the most time in our day are the ones we think about the least. Take five workdays (or more) to write down everything that you do, as well as when and how long you do it. Keep detailed notes. Commit to doing this for one week without changing your normal routine. You will soon start to see patterns. Despite the fact that you may become aware of where you can begin to make improvements, you must resist the urge to change anything at this early stage. Just keep doing everything you would normally do in an “average” week until this exercise has been completed. Use your smart phone, a piece of paper or whatever you need to that is quick and easy, so that the task of keeping a record is as simple as possible.
Whatever note-taking approach you use, make sure it is accessible and with you at all times, or you will not follow through. Do not try to use your memory. Only by writing everything down with start and completion times will you be able to review everything the way you need to later. Make note of even the shortest and slightest tasks, like phone calls and even a coffee or food break.
Now that you have spent a week detailing what you typically do, it is time for you to analyze the “data.” The best way to get started is to break the week down into days and hours, if you have not already done so. Next, you need to analyze your findings to figure out where you are wasting the most time in the most unfocused ways. More often than not, these kinds of things will jump out at you readily.
The next step is to design a new self-management plan. Changing your behavior means being honest with yourself. Where are you wasting time the most? Do you really need to take every phone call that comes in right that minute, especially when it detracts you from getting a deadline met? Are you spending too much time chatting with current customers, when you need to be drumming up new ones? If you can make the conscious decision to stay away from tasks that are less important, your newfound focus on what is most critical for success might allow you to take some risks for a change. Who knows, you might even find you can bite off more than you ever thought you could chew and feel good about it for a change. Be careful not to over schedule yourself or assign yourself too many tasks at first. Keep in mind that good self-evaluation and any subsequent and meaningful change is always conscious and starts out slowly. Becoming more focused and productive is a process, one that may take weeks or even months. Get started by setting aside a minimum of ten minutes each day at a specific time of day to focus and articulate to yourself what it is you need/want to get accomplished before the day, week or month is out. It takes a fair degree of discipline to do this in a regimented way, but it is worth it when you start to see results.
Once you have mastered the planning process for focusing your energies and doing things differently, it is time take action. Start by cutting out the small things that you identified as “time-suckers,” as I like to call them. Taking personal calls from friends or even family during scheduled work time is just one example of something that can easily be reprioritized, unless there is an emergency of course. Managing yourself and how you spend your precious time means dealing with the smaller issues before delving deeper into the larger challenges. Remember to always assign time limits to your tasks, no matter what their size. Then do your best to stick to it.
The key to focusing your energies so that you can maximize your productivity and contentment at work is consciousness. Be conscious of what it is you are spending your time doing. Be conscious of what it is your employees are spending the most time on. Stop and make a plan for how to refocus your and their energies and then take the steps to change the way you get things done ― one day, one week, one month at a time.

A recent poll of 250 unemployed, middle-aged men commissioned by Newsweek and featured in the April 25 issue’s article entitled “Dead Suit Walking,” found that 84% of them had been unemployed for six months or more and 60% think it is unlikely they will ever get to their previous level of work again. Despite the fact that 82% of them expressed concern about their predicament, the poll also showed that well over half had not yet resorted to taking a job they would consider “beneath them.”
Focusing primarily on the psychic toll the current and unprecedented so-called “Man cession” is having on educated, middle-aged white men in particular, the article concludes that far too many of them are simply in denial about just how different things are this time around. Past economic downturns have actually left the middle-aged, college-educated white male relatively unscathed. Not this time. With nearly 600,000 degree-wielding, white men between the ages of 35 and 64 unemployed in the first quarter of this year alone and not much relief in sight on the job-availability front, authors Marin and Dokoupil assert an “historic change” is afoot. In fact, according to Heidi Shierholz, a labor economist at the Economic Policy Institute who is cited in the piece, “the suits are ‘doing worse than they have at any time since the Great Depression.’”
So what is a college-educated, unemployed, middle-aged white male to do when and if he comes to the realization that his old working life may be gone for good and that he needs to reinvent himself? Marin and Dokoupil touch on retraining and rebranding as viable options, both of which have downsides they point out. Companies that used to pick up the tab for outplacement services to retrain people who were let go are now a rarity, meaning the cost all too often falls back on the individual and it can be pricey. As for the whole concept of rebranding, the jump in the number of consultants (aka independent contractors) has skyrocketed in the last five years. Competition in this arena is fierce for sure. Great work if you can get it...and steadily.
There is a third option the authors leave unexplored, one that also has its share of challenges to be sure, but is valid nonetheless―home-based or other small business or franchise ownership. The fact is that there are literally thousands of legitimate, proven and reputable business, distributorship, licensee and franchise opportunities out there to choose from and that offer individuals with the right skill set and an entrepreneurial spirit the very real possibility of both financial success and personal fulfillment. Many of them do not require a tremendous start-up investment and, for the right candidate, may even offer financing options or some degree of assistance in this regard.
Now, business ownership may not be the first thing any of us who has spent much of our life working for someone else thinks about when it comes to reinventing our professional future, that is for sure. However, let us face it; “I’m the boss!” has a nice ring to it. If nothing else, it certainly beats working far too hard for someone else, doing less than you’re capable of and making money to fill someone else’s pockets while you make less than ever before, right? So isn’t it worth looking at what is out there? What can it hurt?
As American industrialist and philanthropist John D. Rockefeller once said, “If you want to succeed you should strike out on new paths, rather than travel the worn paths of accepted success.” No denial here…that is good advice.

As a Christian and a family focused entrepreneur, I believe that faith is a key ingredient in small business success. In this current economy, the people of God must remember that if you honor God through your business he will direct your path.
Use these bible verses in the good and tough times in your small business.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your path.” Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV) learn something every day. If you only lean on your own knowledge in your business, you will not be able to grow. You must grow yourself to grow your business
“Behold, I am doing something new! It is already happening; don’t you recognize it? I will clear a way in the desert. I will make rivers on dry land.” Isaiah 43:19 (GOD’S WORD® Translation) sometimes your business will need to move as the market pulls you in a different direction. You might need to reinvent your business, and you should not be afraid. God always has your back.
”Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” Philippians 4:6 (NIV) One of the most important things you can do for your business is to pray every day.
“Faith without works is dead.” James 2:26 (KJV) You can’t just pray for success. Develop a plan and work your plan. If you can do something about your situation, then do it. Stop making excuses, stop procrastinating, and do it!
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9 (NIV) There will be contracts that you really need that you will not win. There will be days when you drop the ball on your customer service, but you cannot let that define you or your business. You will get another opportunity and even if you do not, God is with you always.
“As I think in my heart, so am I.” Proverbs 23:7 (NKJV) Your thoughts can be your number #1 asset or your biggest liability. When you are alone in your office or back bedroom, your thoughts can easily turn on you. Your ability to stay positive, learn from all experiences and shake off mistakes quickly will be a big asset to you and your business.
“God has not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, love and sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7 (NKJV) Making decisions in your small business based on fear is never helpful. For that matter, making decisions in anger is not good either. Try hard not to be reactionary with clients, vendors or employees. Use information and up-to date financials to make sound business decisions.
“But these things I plan won’t happen right away. Slowly, steadily, surely, the time approaches when the vision will be fulfilled. If it seems slow, do not despair, for these things will surely happen. Just be patient! They will not be overdue a single day.” Habakkuk 2:3 (TLB) You need to understand that God’s time is not your time. There may come a time in your business when you just know you have a contract, one that you really need and things fall through. Those are the times when you need to trust in the Lord the most. When we accept God’s timing, we can learn to live in hope and enjoy our lives while God is working on our problems.
“Happy is the man who finds wisdom, and the man who gains understanding;” Proverbs 3:13 (NIV) You need to be a lifelong learner in order to be successful in business. You should constantly seek to improve yourself and increase your knowledge about the business of running a business.
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. However, take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 (NIV) this is my new bible verse for 2019. It came to me watching a college football game. I believe I was only watching the game to see it.
Remember, whether you are religious or not you can always pray about your business.
