I think, in our desire to make Shen Qingqiu a little guy who loves monsters in fics (very good, wonderful, we love this, BUT), we have missed the opportunity to make him the monster in the AU. I raise to you:

LiuShen Naga AU, where Shen Qingqiu is the naga.

Monster hunter/supernatural pest control guy Liu Qingge who gets called to a small rural town because there's some sort of monster about. The locals have not sighted it, but the behavior of their livestock and sudden dip in wildlife population indicates some sort of large, likely supernatural predator has moved in.

This can be modern AU or cultivator AU! The only important thing is this; nagas are not something Liu Qingge would normally deal with. They're huge and incredibly dangerous, with extraordinary stealth skills. If a naga's around you, you won't know it unless they want you to, and by that point it'll be too late. Their venom is also legendary. So whatever the context of the AU; a naga is something above Liu Qingge's roster of things he'll go after, simply because while bullheaded, he is not suicidal.

So, Liu Qingge investigates the mountains, but finds almost nothing to suggest the kind of beast he suspects to be there. He makes several trips over the course of several days, each time going deeper and deeper into the mountains beside the small village. He finds what he thinks are signs of something there, though he doesn't recognize exactly what could have made them (nagas are very solitary and exceptionally rare, and signs of their presence difficult to find or identify. Liu Qingge has never encountered one before this, nor is he expecting to, so he doesn't recognize up the signs for what they are)

The moment of realization comes when he's deep, deep into the mountains one evening and stumbles upon an odd object on the ground. Large, green, slightly translucent. He lifts it, and feels his blood run cold as he sees the pattern of massive scales and realizes he's holding the shed of a naga.

A fully grown naga, who absolutely knows he's here. Who's den he's probably standing dangerously close to, if there's a shed. A naga who, undoubtedly, has been watching him for the better part of his time searching these mountains, without him ever realizing it.

His heads whips around, searching the area around him. He's been allowed to move within and leave the territory unimpeded thus far; he may be able to get out now, provided the naga hasn't realized how close he's gotten to it's den. If he moves quickly...

It's at that moment his eyes catch on a shadow, falling strangely on the forest floor. He pauses, eyes faltering, before with a sudden harsh chill he finds himself starring directly into a pair of vibrant green eyes with sharp slit pupils. He can just make out the shape of a massive emerald green naga crouched in the underbrush, less than a hundred feet away from him.

And he feels the rush of cold harsh terror only experienced by a prey animal suddenly realizing it's in the sights of a predator.

We need to talk about Tartt’s character descriptions

More Donna Tartt praise.

She writes human physical descriptions in the most genuine and true-to-life ways. I didn’t even realize how many books do not go into the actual nuance of human appearances until I read TSH and Goldfinch.

I think most books kind of categorize people as pretty, ugly, or plain then lean into what generally makes people pretty, ugly, or plain plus hair and eye colors. I love how Tartt’s books make characters appear how the majority of people really do: an assortment of specific details. There’s Boris’s bitten nails and how Henry is big and square but does not carry himself as if he is. Bunny is a once-muscled guy (now more chubby) whose naturally good looks are starting to get a little sloppy. His nose is also a bit small/sharp for his face shape. Camilla is pretty, and we hear about her thick ankles and the way her curls rest at her temples. Francis is nice-looking because he carries and styles himself well, but we hear that those things compensate for his kind of beaky nose and boney angles.

Pippa is another great example! Theo describes her looks as tender and precious. She comes across as very cute in a homely way. But we hear that her eyes look “naked” because her lashes are so pale (I can imagine this so well!) and that her nose is long. Her cheeks are thin. Theo notes these things, and thinks she’s pretty anyway; he assumes he must have some personal affinity for her and is given a wake-up call when Everett also finds these traits cute.

OH actually let me squeeze in Mr. Barbour here. Because lol???

His eyes were a queer unstable gray and his hair was pure white, which made him seem older than he was until you noticed that his face was young and pink — boyish, even. His ruddy cheeks and his long, old-fashioned nose, in combination with the prematurely white hair, gave him the amiable look of a lesser founding father, some minor member of the Continental Congress teleported to the twenty-first century.

This is so specific and so easy to see. It stuck out to me when I read it, and my mom mentioned it to me when she read it. She said she was really hit by Andy’s dad’s description and thought it was funny but did a really good job delivering an image.

It’s just so real and gets at how normal people actually are: not always pretty in a “safe” way. Tartt has the guts to give you a description of an actual unique, textured person and say “This is nice.” Or, in Bunny’s case, give someone who is basically handsome but not necessarily pleasant-looking. Theres so much nuance, and it’s honest.

It kind of made me rethink how I write human descriptions. There are “safe” things to point out that become a little insubstantial if you combine too many of them: “The pretty girl has glossy hair and curves and bright blue eyes.” And then there’s going into actual shapes and the way people carry themselves and how some features look against others. It honestly just makes the characters really pop and they’re easy to envision.

I can't believe I missed it, but look at Fizz here putting his bunny poof-ball tail on his actual tail! XD XD XD I guess it would have look weird if he put it at the base instead of the tip. ;) XD

*I do find it interesting too that Fizz is showing off all his prosthetics in full view of the crowd, but his horns are still kept hidden, so for sure they are the spot he's most sensitive about/seen as one of if not his biggest flaw. :( Also, the fact that his knees have hearts on them is so cute as well as that he came with multiple sets of prosthetics and costumes for the pageant. ^_^<3

thana's bunny traits, in summary:

nose twitch. often happens when they're very focused or trying to concentrate, and is completely involuntary.

thumping. when thana is frustrated or upset, they'll stomp their left foot. also completely involuntary and they will be even more upset if you point it out.

chinning. when hugging or cuddling someone, they'll rub the underside of their chin on a shoulder or arm. this is voluntary and a show of trust and affection from them.

Present day thoughts:

Typical, Daffy coming over to Bugs' side of the forest.

Also Bugs is consistently very cheerful about Christmas throughout media, so that's neat little thing. He info dumps factoids about Christmas to Daffy in Bah Humduck. Also also! Bugs "I could explain it but it's much more fun to just watch" is so typical of him. He applies this thought process to everything. This is why his eyes tend to draw towards Daffy. And Elmer's reliably entertaining to watch because of how easy it is to toy with him.

When Mihawk decides to join the battle, he's shown jumping, presumably down as a kind of "acceptance" or whatever.

Except he was standing next to the other warlords the entire time. And when it pans out... you can see they were all stood on a completely flat path

There’s something almost surreal about seeing the AoStH and SatAM Robotniks side-by-side in a Fleetway publication, isn’t there? Anyway, on this page they talk about how two Sonic cartoons are coming over from America to air on Channel 4. I actually remember watching SatAM on Channel 4 as a kid, though not AoStH, which I mostly watched on VHS tapes. This page shows a quick guide to both of the cartoons. It mostly grabbed my attention due to the inclusion of Bunnie, Antoine and Snively in the images at the bottom. A fun fact about Snively is that he almost was used in StC and got cut from the comic, but I’ll talk more about that when it becomes relevant to my read-though. There’s also an unnamed Freedom Fighter who I think was used as a background character in SatAM? It’s been a while since I rewatched SatAM and that’s also on my longterm list to cover for this blog, so I’ll be sure to keep an eye out for this character. Perhaps they were originally going to be given a bigger role

Also, I believe the text about SatAM might be referring only to the pilot episode, which could be why the various badniks are mentioned with heightened importance compared to what they actually received in SatAM and why Rotor is still called Boomer On the other hand, AoStH is talked about pretty much as it is, though the note at the end about Sonic & Tails needing to live on the run gives a sadder feel to their situation than what the cartoon presented it as. There’s also another page that I didn’t include after this one, with an episode guide for several episodes of AoStH, furthering my belief that they just knew more about AoStH than they did about SatAM at the time this was made

So that's it for the first of the poster mags. I was excited to get to this one for the insight into what could’ve been, but after reading through this and the two annuals, I’m looking forward to getting back to the regular StC for the next update EDIT: Another interesting thing I noticed literally before posting this is that Antoine is called "Antoine D'Coolette". This almost slipped under my radar, because he was called this in Archie and is most-commonly known by this name. But in SatAM, his name was Antoine Depardieu. I had a quick look, and apparently in the Sonic Bible he was called Antoine D'Coolette, so it makes sense that name would appear here instead of Depardieu
