Whumptober Day 3 - The Scarecrow "Sticks and stones"

Scarecrow was no stranger to insults being hurled at him. In fact, he was rather good at receiving him. Or rather he'd learned how to not let it affect him.

He'd heard them all. Ichabod, failed experiment, my greatest mistake etc. He'd thought he'd shed the names once he left the confines of that awful school.

Unfortunately, the old saying was true. School never ends, not truly. Only instead of his peers openly mocking him now, he found the ever-present mocking was now resigned to water cooler gossip. Backward glances followed by hushed snickers when he turned his head.

It never truly went away. Not really. People only grew more adept at covering it. He grew bitter. He was taught never to say a bad word about anyone growing up but there was an obvious unfairness. They were tormenting him daily and the adults did nothing. They wouldn't lift a finger to help and yet he was expected to play nice and be the bigger person?

Jon found himself crying less and less over the years with each name he was called. The sting of their jeers and jibes no longer stung. Each comment morphed into something. Like a fire that needed fuel, each comment became the gasoline. And he was going to burn everything to the ground.

It was easy enough to track down everyone who had tormented him. He killed them. It made him feel better. Of course, it had. Hearing their screams of terror filled him with glee. It was their penance for all their years of bullying and torment. He became a monster to finally hurt them back after all they did. They deserved it.

Sticks and stones would break his bones but words would never hurt him.

At least...that's what he told himself.

Why does one person turn into a bully and another? The victim?

We try to raise our children to not be a bully, to be kind and considerate of another person's feelings. To not treat anyone with disdain or reverence, to always be loving and non-judgmental. Unfortunately, that is not the way society works. Everyone bullies another in one way, shape, or form. Not being bullied is not realistic.

Not just for school yards anymore, society stepped above that now and created the internet, where you can anonymously attack your victim via private messages, public posts, and even the private chat room where others who dislike you for their own judgmental reasons and going off what "she said" and suddenly it becomes truth. It’s easier to inflict pain and suffering on others when you don’t have to look them in the eye. Where you get to hide your stalking behind a computer screen and seemingly the only repercussions are those of the "block" button. The savviest stalker will create another account to stalk you again or stay silent just to mock you in private. It's like being in the FBI but on steroids for bullies. Most Social Media platforms do nothing to resolve the issue, they sit back and wait for certain key words and phrases to be used, but hey go ahead and torment your victim as long as you don't threaten them. When did this become acceptable?

My childhood was filled with bullies just like most. Sadly, most childhood bullies grow up to raise bullies and stay bullies their entire life. Did you know that approximately 20 percent of students report being bullied at school, according to the National Center for Education Statistics? How awful is that? Most adult bullies, who work with children, tend to do nothing to help, because they themselves believe there is nothing wrong with the behavior. Some bullies do leave the behavior behind. But many do not; aggression is a very stable social interaction style. Many who were bullies as children turn into antisocial adults, who are far more likely than nonaggressive kids to commit crimes, batter their wives, abuse their children—and produce another generation of bullies.

Studies of children show that victims easily acquiesce to bullies’ demands, handing over bikes, toys, and other playthings. They cry and assume a defensive posture; their highly visible displays of pain and suffering are rewarding to bullies and serve as an important signal of the bully’s dominance. Children who become victims offer no deterrent to aggression, which can make them disliked even by their non-bullying peers. This is true in adulthood as well.

You join the local PTA in your town. You become a reasonably well-respected member until you make a mistake on a project. You apologize for your error and proceed to fix the issue as most normal adults would do. You notice many of the parents are staring at you and whispering to each other. A few weeks go by, and you catch wind of a rumor that the PTA is going to vote no confidence in you and remove you from your position over a very minor mistake. Suddenly your children aren't invited to the birthday party of their best friend, because she is the head of the PTA, and you also notice, the kids at school are avoiding your children and calling them horrible names. This is bullying and intimidation. being ostracized from a social setting because of a mistake?

You follow a band; you have loved for a long time and join their Fanclub chat groups online that you pay access to just like everyone else does. You get into a heated discussion with the resident bully. This bully then proceeds to become a tyrant and persecutes you via private messages, public posts, to other fans and even instigates other fans to do the same. So much so, you set your pages to private, stop going to shows, and even sell all your merch, refusing to listen to the band's music anymore because it is too painful.

Mean Girls 101

You book a "girls' trip" with some friends you have made over time with a mutual love for comics. You all decide you're going to meet up in a city you have never been to before to go to a convention and hang out together for the weekend. The weekend comes and goes, and you are so happy because you think you finally met people who enjoy the same things you do, only to hear through the grapevine that the same people you thought you had become close with, have a private chat room to make fun of you. One person came clean because they felt bad for you and didn't want you to trust these people anymore. Your broken. You confront them, they apologize and you being who you're, decide to forgive and move forward. Months go by and no one speaks to you directly, they only respond on posts. Suddenly another convention is announced, and you all decide to room together again. Plans are made. Money paid.

You board your flight, and no one reaches out to see what time you land. Once you do land, you message the friend group you have landed. 20 minutes go by with no answer. Finally, someone responds we are on our way. When they finally arrive, you notice the frosty response to your hugs and excitement. You become silent and guarded the rest of the trip. One girl in particular continues to give you dirty, unwelcoming looks, and 2 others ignore you completely leaving you pretty much on your own. Thank God you have other people you now know that you can be with. At the end of the weekend, you notice, they have all but stopped speaking to you.

Weeks go by and you notice a picture posted with the 3 girls at a location you wanted to go to, that they went, without you. This is after you had told them previous to the trip, that you wished to go to said location. You cut off contact and block them. No one ever reaches out to you to apologize or even talk about it.

When did it become acceptable behavior to treat someone like this? It's absolutely abhorrent. Just because you do not like them. Why not be honest and have a conversation. Instead, you leave them wondering what THEY DID. Disgusting behavior. Cruel beyond measure.

All of these are examples of ways bullying can occur. It's heartbreaking, confusing for the victim, and just downright cruel.

Society however has accepted this all as "normal" human behavior. This is not normal, this is taught. No one can ever convince me that you are intentionally raised to not hate & be judgmental of someone. Your parents raised you to be this way. Even if you wish to claim otherwise, every time you overheard your mother talking about your neighbors "ugly new dress" or your father talking about how his boss' "wife is the ugliest broad he ever saw" or how about when your mother doesn't want you to play with a certain child in the neighborhood because " her parents are strange" (EVEN THOUGH SHE DRINK MARAGRAITA'S WITH THE MOTHER EVERY WEEKEND) As simple as it sounds, it's really not. It's judgmental. Child do learn what they live. So, if you're seeing your parents judge others for their lives, what they wear, what car they drive. You too will grow up to do the same and maybe worse. Like excluding them from trips, looking down on others, and all around being a shit person. Poking fun, making up rumors, teasing, bullying, stalking...it's all tied in.

This is something we all can do, including myself.

Most bullying sites and blogs are founded out of hate for a certain subject or person. Normally it's a celebrity that has triggered a mentally unwell 'FAN" who has an axe to grind. It's really easy to get "rid" of these bullies. DON'T BE THEIR AUDIENCE. Seriously, don't participate.

Not all of us follow the above recommendations, but I can say overtime, most of us are smart enough to avoid the troublesome ones and stay to a small block of those we have met in person.

So, the next time you encounter a bully, do yourself a favor. WALK AWAY, don't engage. Do your mental health a favor and distance yourself. & Remember this, NO ONE regardless of skin color, dress size, bank account size, actor or not, religion, creed, Sex, or living arrangements, deserves to be judged and manipulated to feel bad about themselves in any way shape or form.

THE ONLY TIME YOU SHOULD LOOK DOWN ON ANYONE IS WHEN YOU ARE HELPING THEM UP.
