“Walkabout” 16 x 20” Oil on canvas Painting By: Roxie Avalon . . “The theory is, if you’re separated from yourself, you start walking and you keep walking until you meet yourself. Then you sit down, and you have a long talk. Talk about everything that you’ve learned, everything that you’ve felt, and you talk until you’ve run out of words. Now, that’s vital, because the real important things can’t be said. And then, if you’re lucky, you look up, and there’s just you.” - Babylon 5

Boufuurin's Four Heavenly Kings and their Buddhism counterpart
We have established that Boufuurin's four teams are based on the four Buddhism gods that watch over the four directions of the world. In this post, we will dive into the correspondence and symbolism behind each team's title.
Notes: they/them pronouns for Tsubaki.
Jikoku Team (Tsubaki's team)
Jikoku Team is named after Dhṛtarāṣṭra, or Jikoku-ten (持国天) in Japanese, Guardian of the East. Jikoku-ten has white skin and carries a pipa (a stringed musical instrument), the sound of which calms listeners' minds. His name means "Upholder of the Nation", that is, to rule and keep the order of the kingdom, and protect its people.
A remark should be made about his role. Not only does Jikoku-ten protect all people, but he also shields the gandharva's (or gandhabba's)—non-human beings who seek shelter in trees and flowers that emit scents. Hence, Jikoku-ten is strongly connected to plants.
Now, Tsubaki's name means Camellia—a flower that represents inner strength and deep love. Story lines surrounding them also involve love and flora. From Tsubaki's feelings for Umemiya, who enjoys gardening, to the story between grandpa Ito-san and his late wife Yui-san centering a dogwood tree, it seems like the theme is very consistent.
Komoku Team (Mizuki's team)
Komoku Team is named after Virūpākṣa, or Komoku-ten (広目天) in Japanese, Guardian of the West. Komoku-ten has red skin, and his name means "All-seeing" or "He Who Has Broad Objectives". His divine eyes can observe the living world, oversee all beings' actions and karma.
Mizuki, true to his title, was the strategist for Boufuurin's defense against Noroshi. He was the one to organize teams into their suitable positions and had kept an eye on Boufuurin's situation during the whole battle.
Zojo Team (Momose's team)
Zojo Team is names after Virūḍhaka, or Zouchou-ten (増長天) in Japanese, Guardian of the South. Zouchou-ten has blue skin and his name means "growth" or "increase". His role is to oversee hostile gods, protect the younglings, or sprouts, and maintain Buddhism principles.
I think Momose connects to the "fostering sprouts" mission the most. From what we can pick out, he's an artist and we can assume that he somewhat influences the graffiti arts around the Fuurin school building, hence why graffiti in Fuurin has a very consistent and distinguishable style (which is a post that I'm cooking up!!!). By inducing art (not just graffiti, as we can also see random canvas paintings around Fuurin), Momose is indirectly nurturing Fuurin students' personal growth.
Tamon Team (Hiiragi's team)
Tamon Team is named after Vaiśravaṇa, or Tamon-ten/Bishamon-ten (多聞天 /毘沙門天) in Japanese, Guardian of the North. Tamon-ten has yellow or green skin, is the highest ranking in the Four Heavenly Kings, and is considered the god of war. His name means "Listening to Many Teachings". Besides overseeing the living, Tamon-ten also keeps guard for Buddha's preaches. Thus, one could say he is the closest to Buddha.
Hiiragi perfectly fits into this description. Among the Boufuurin kings, he is the closest to Umemiya, even considered his right-hand man. Hiiragi is probably the strongest, too, as he was given the title of the god of war.
#joke isnt mine but i think yall need to hear this#komoku-ten has divine eyes but mizuki is short-sighted haha#and Zouchou-ten's name means 'grow' but Momose is the shortest aksdhsdhfud#wind breaker four heavenly kings#tsubaki chan#tsubakino tasuku#mizuki saku#momose takumi#hiiragi touma#hiragi toma#umemiya hajime#wbk analysis#wind breaker#wind breaker nii satoru#wbk

anyway I'm gonna unethically make my mom a painting for christmas! because I'm basing it off a photo I took with my phone's astrophotography setting, which uses AI to more effectively take long exposures (if I had taken the photo with my DSLR, the exposure would have been so long that the stars were visibly moving across the sky or I would need a rotating rig which compensates for the earth's rotation, which i Do Not Have). having thus Contaminated my photograph with AI (stealing from other photographers to train the model!) I will thus painstakingly hand-paint Unethical and Contaminated Art.
I hope - if she has time - that my sister will make me a collage. She'll take inspiration from work by other artists, she'll look at reference images, she'll lean on the instincts and ideas she's built up over her lifetime of looking at other people's art, and then she'll cut up magazines and old newspapers and she'll print out things she likes and she'll cut and assemble them into a novel whole. If she gives it to me I will not know where she sourced any given piece of paper OR any idea about composition or subject or structure. But, it will still be Her Creation and in it I will see all of her fingerprints alongside the unacknowledged fingerprints of the photographers whose photos she collected. It will be a product of her vision and I can rest assured that all her theft is ethical since she used a scissors to do it.
certain AI art discourse is funny to me because some of my favorite artwork in the real physical world is collage - literal cutting and pasting of other people's work (photos, writing, graphic design, paintings) without credit. my sister makes fantastic collages and I would hang dozens in my home if I could. and some that I've seen in galleries or artwalks have been incredibly impactful juxtapositions (thinking of a couple at the Native American photography exhibit this weekend but also some at the Brewery Artwalk the weekend before, just because they're on the top of my head).
but yeah. there's a work of my sister's that's hanging in my dad's house that I've wanted for myself for ages. cut-and-paste.
#on some kind of bent about this#usually I block the AI art tag bc it gets me arguing with imaginary people but.#seeing museum collages sunday and my sister's collages yesterday and dumb posts on the for you feed today had me Feeling#my sister's handmade collages vs. the generic Aesthetic Canvas Thing my mom bought at Target vs. a Rothko vs. my photography#vs. the multi-thousand-dollar pieces at the art walk that I could neither afford nor justify buying even if I could despite their beauty#vs the little prints I got from a cafe in joshua tree that are stuck next to my desk at work next to paintings I did#that i need to get a (former) coworker to take down for me#i have far too many feelings about ai art as someone who does not make ai art and does make traditional art#deep breath#no more ai art posts today i have the buddha nature

“This is the secret of spiritual life: to think that I am the Atman and not the body, and that the whole of this universe with all its relations, with all its good and all its evil, is but as a series of paintings...scenes on a canvas...of which I am the witness.“ — Swami Vivekananda
