Symbols surrounding Boufuurin's leaders and their meanings
This post will go into explicit symbols (ones that are clearly drawn with the intention to show the audience) of the flowers that represents our Four Heavenly Kings, and Umemiya Hajime.
(Implicit Boufuurin symbols)
Tumblr media
The fanatic - Sugishita Kyoutarou
The first, and most impressive piece of symbolism that hit me is from chapter 3, when we meet Sugishita for the first time.
Tumblr media
While I was doing research, I came across @/sawacore on twitter who had pointed out that the 5 flowers are the flowers of Boufuurin's Heavenly Kings and Umemiya.
Tumblr media
The 5 flowers
Below is my effort to match and name these flowers. I don't think I am 100% correct, but I've identify the most distinguishable details about them. (And all of them are edible! What a surprise!)
Umemiya - Ume (Plum blossom)
Tumblr media
Plum blossom means good fortune, health, and a talisman against evil. Moreover, Ume flower is also considered Sakura (cherry blossom)'s older sister, as it blooms at the end of winter and beginning of spring, right before cherry blossom does.
Tsubaki - Japanese Camellia
The flower is in their name, so there is no speculation here.
Tumblr media
Tsubaki resembles freedom of choice and perfect love, which is very in character for our Tsubaki. Tsubaki had broken the gender norms to wear skirt and make-up even if they were born as a boy. Moreover, I truly adore their opinion on love: Love's value is in its own and doesn't need to be reciprocated for it to be perfect. They loved being in love, and that was what's beautiful about it.
Mizuki - Amana flower (Tulipa edulis/アマナ)
Tumblr media
Now I can't find the meaning of this flower, so maybe I was wrong here. But this flower is, in fact, edible, and kind of fits the description: Pointy petals and cruciform. Please let me know if you find a better flower!
Momose - Momo flower (Prunus persica)
Tumblr media
Momo flower means "fascinating personality", love, and good luck. It's a little all over the place, yes, but maybe we haven't known enough about Momose?
Hiiragi - Holly berry
Tumblr media
Holly, or holly berry included, represents prosperity and focus strength. This is factually correct, as Hiiragi is the leader of a team whose name is taken from the god of warfare.

Wind Breaker Song Parody Doodles (2)
A collection of Nii-sensei's song parody doodles posted on Twitter! Will be linking sensei's tweet, the corresponding song, and windbreakerdaily's post of the illustration here on Tumblr.
(Part 1)
In this post: Panda Hero | Solar System Disco | Shinigami | Mahi | Shin Takarajima
Tumblr media
[ nii_satoru | windbreakerdaily ]
Hachi - Panda Hero
If you find yourself troubled, call for them, on the field enclosed by electric towers
A black-and-white hero of unclear morals, a metal bat in their left hand
Tumblr media
[ nii_satoru | windbreakerdaily ]
NayutalieN - Solar System Disco
Under the boisterous light of that first magnitude star
shall we dance a dance together?
In tune with the heartbeat of our solar system
let's sparkle with tangled steps, star!
Tumblr media
[ nii_satoru | windbreakerdaily ]
Kenshi Yonezu - Shinigami (full ver. covered by dongdang)
Alright, what needs to be taken care of?
Like to get a glimpse of him after he's been put through hell
Want to see his face
After he's gone off flying, slipped, cried and bawled
He can't get away from us anyway
Tumblr media
[ nii_satoru | windbreakerdaily ]
yama - Mahi
Even though I was fragile that I'll break
I was strongly seeking love
I don't want to forget what it means to be standing on this stage
I never want to forget it
Tumblr media
[ nii_satoru | windbreakerdaily ]
sakanaction - Shin Takarajima
In order to bring you along with me now
I'll draw oh so carefully;
With these shaky, trembling lines
I've decided
To draw oh so carefully
Notes: These are the 10 I could find so far! I'm going off on sensei's captions / the words in the drawings, so do let me know if I've missed any. Check out the songs too 🎵 Hope this has been an interesting read to you!

Satoru Nii's yet another clever usage of symbolism
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
side note : I use 'last name first name' format to address each character
starting from the top, clockwise direction, we got
Hiragi Toma
柊 登馬
Hiragi/Hiiragi (柊) : holly osmanthus (or) false holly
Tumblr media
Momose Takumi
桃瀬 匠
Momo (桃) : peach
Tumblr media
Mizuki Saku
水木 聡久
Mizuki (水木) : dogwood
(anime version has 5 petals but manga version has 4 petals
might be animation error in my opinion)
Tumblr media
Tsubakino Tasuku
椿野 佑
Tsubaki (椿) : camellia
Tumblr media
lastly, in the center, we got
Umemiya Hajime
梅宮 一
Ume (梅) : plum
I only included corresponding kanjis (漢字) to empathize the above mentioned panel. I didn't cover the characters' full names because someone else has done already.

Wind Breaker Episode 13 Review + Final Thoughts - Second Season Announced For 2025!
With the way this episode ended, there’s definitely no way they wouldn’t announce a season 2 and they did—it’ll come out in 2025! It’s to be expected because this was one of Spring 2024’s biggest hits. I certainly enjoyed this and it’s high up on my midyear anime list that I’ll be posting  next week!
Tumblr media
Meeting with the Four Kings of Bofurin is going to help Sakura open up a lot more, even though he’s still taking baby steps. The Four Kings have such cool designs. We all know Hiiragi, but there’s also Tsubakino (he’s male), Mizuki and Momose who are very cool on their own! None of them speak, unfortunately. The purpose of the meeting with the Kings and the Grade Captains to let them know that they will always have people supporting them so it’s fine to let them rely on their senpais. Umemiya always knows how to ease someone’s spirits!
Sakura’s taking baby steps as leader of his class! He actually decides to take on Anzai’s matters into his own hands and the rest of the class tags along too because they’re a team. It’s so nice to see Sakura, who was super distrustful, slowly grow into someone who can be relied on! I really liked the scene with him talking with Anzai’s childhood friend Tsuchiya. He normally doesn’t try to start a conversation towards others, so for him to initiate talk is such a novel but welcome feeling! I even liked how Sakura was thinking about Kotoha’s advice on leaving the matter to him. If you look at Sakura at the beginning to the finale of the first season, there’s some solid growth there.
Anzai may be a bit of an obscure classmate in Sakura’s class, but It’s obvious that, while he’s a nice guy, he’s trying too much to take things by himself. He’s also a bad liar to the point that the gullible Sakura can see right through him.You know you’re a terrible liar when Sakura knows you’re lying. His story with Nagato was really sad. It’d break my heart if I learned my childhood friend was hanging out with the wrong crowd. I hope that things can patch up between him and Nagato once Furin goes to beat Keel’s ass. This might be a bit of rambling, but I just learned that his voice actor is Shogo Sakata, who’s known for voicing Aki Hayakawa from Chainsaw Man. I didn’t know he can produce such a childish voice.
Speaking of Keel, the gang is so creepy. Even when I was reading the manga, they gave me cult-like vibes. The member that Sakura meets on patrol is voiced by Junya Enoki. I’m as shocked as you are! I always familiarize Enoki with heroic roles like Totomaru Isshiki from Ron Kamonohashi: Deranged Detective that it’s sort of hard to imagine him as a villain, but he’s here in Wind Breaker as a villain. This will seriously be a treat to watch because this is probably one of the rare times he’ll voice a villain and I can’t wait to hear it! Rambling aside, Keel is very cult-like because they have such a terrible method of discipling their members. If someone failed to do something, they get hit. It’s seriously awful. I do wonder how Nagato got entangled in all of this.
Even in the finale, the animation still is amazing. The way Anzai was fighting off Keel members and even the part where he was catching the purse thief, who turned out to be Nagato, were so good. My favorite part was when Sakura was chasing after Anzai and the camera pans to him going down the stairs and then jumps down to cut him off. Cloverworks really likes showing off why they’re so good with animation.
I seriously cannot wait for next year. It’s crazy how Wind Breaker is getting a second season already! If you’re curious about what happens next and want to read about, please start from Chapter 42, which is the beginning of Volume 6! Season 1 covered the first 5 volumes! I wonder how many volumes the next season will cover. What are your thoughts on the finale?
Final Thoughts
To be very honest, Wind Breaker was one of those animes that I wanted to watch primarily because of the stellar voice cast and that I had a very sour experience watching Bucchigiri, which was also about gang fighting. However, it slowly became one of the most exciting anime watching experiences I had. It’s because of Wind Breaker that I got a lot more online friends! It’s always nice to meet new people who watch the same things as you! While the anime is fun, I think what I gained these past three months feels as precious. Seriously, it’s such an amazing feeling.
Wind Breaker may be a straightforward story about gang fights and action, but the writing is a lot more heartwarming than you expect. It’s more about seeing the characters, specifically the MC Sakura, learn and grow. We learn why Sakura is the way he is and how being around people is beneficial for him. The concept of him going to a delinquent high school, but it’s also a place where the delinquents also have double duty as police officers of sorts. I also love that the fighting is just pure action and not crazy magic stuff. I love that it’s a little different from the usual delinquent stories in that it focuses more on characters and not fighting all the time.
The characters are the highlight of the show. Each of them have their own unique design and personality. It’s just so nice to see how well they mesh together. Not only does Furin have intricate designs, but Shishitoren does too! My favorite part of the characters is learning that their names have a theme! Bofurin characters’ names all revolve around plants. Shishitoren’s names revolve around animals. I can tell the author took so much time and effort to name these characters. As a writer myself, naming characters is both the funnest and the most tiresome aspect of the writing process.
Cloverworks did an amazing job with the anime adaptation. From the memorable first episode where Sakura goes all out against a gang by himself to animating the Shishitoren fights were so great. Though, my favorite part of the animation was seeing the studio elevate some of the characters’ backstories. I really loved how they animated Togame and Choji’s backstory! Togame got a backstory extension and Choji had such quality detail in his! Let’s just hope they keep that quality next season and not turn it into a mess like The Promised Neverland Season 2. Don’t f*** this up, please. The music was also really nice! The OP and ED songs were catchy and the OST were good! I especially loved the song Stronger! I love how there’s a piano remix of it too whenever something emotional happens.
The voice actors are seriously amazing. They legit casted extremely star-studded voice actors for this anime. We’ve got Yuma Uchida as Sakura, Nobunaga Shimazaki as Suo, Koki Uchiyama as Sugishita, and even Yuichi Nakamura as Umemiya. Look at those names! Shishitoren got some big names too like Yuichiro Umehara as Togame and Chiaki Kobayashi as Sako. If they’re going all out for this season, I can’t wait to see who’d they cast for the Keel characters because having Junya Enoki as one of the members is INSANE!
Like I said before, if you want to start reading the manga, start from Chapter 42 because Episode 13 ends on Chapter 41. I hope that you all had a wonderful experience with this manga! I hope that energy returns next year!

Momose seems the type to be sitting next to you somewhere and he just starts going ham drawing on your arms/hands with little tattoo markers and before you know it you've got a whole sleeve. Like it starts out with the smallest little heart or leaf of a plant and if you get distracted by something he goes for the other arm too watch out
this is such a cute idea i'm gonna throw up i need him yesterday
like now i'm thinking . . . i feel like he's the type who thrives off the comfortable silence he's able to share with you, where you both can do your own thing. granted, there are times where he'll just tail you around or sit next to you and talk your ear off, but he really enjoys simply having you in his vicinity while he draws.
being the girlfriend of one of the four kings means you occasionally get to sneak onto the rooftop during the early hours of the morning before school begins and join momose as he sketches the skyline or a section of umemiya's garden. he finds solace in the brush of your knee against his as you settle at his side with an open book propped up on the picnic table you're seated at, basking in the tranquility of the atmosphere where the only sounds are the soft chirping of birds and the quiet scratch of his charcoal pencil over paper.
you can tell that he's finished when he falls silent, but you don't look over, unsure whether it is a product he would be satisfied with showing off to you. there's a moment where he remains still before he flips his sketchbook shut and leans over to take a peek at the contents of your book.
"what'cha reading?" he scoots closer and cranes his neck.
"just some novel i picked up at that one secondhand shop." you explain, only to chuckle when your eyes absently skim the following paragraph. "it's not very interesting, though."
"oh . . ." momose muses. for a moment, he doesn't say anything else and simply turns away to reach for his pencil case, so you continue reading, figuring that he found something else to draw. there's a quiet rustle and a pronounced click! before, much to your surprise, your boyfriend scoots even closer to you. in your peripheral vision, you watch him fold his body over the edge of the tabletop to rest his temple against the arm he has lackadaisically tossed over the wooden surface.
his face is close enough to your free hand that you can feel his rhythmic exhales ghost over your wrist, and you're about to move your arm for his convenience before you feel something cold and remarkably tiny land on the back of your hand.
"what are you doing?" you laugh softly. when he doesn't answer, you spare him a glance and find him preoccupied with dragging the tip of a ball-point pen over your skin. you find the way the tip of his tongue pokes out from between his lips in concentration to be endearing, and you smile fondly.
"it's a surprise" is all he says, and that's all you need to hear. his drawings range from decorated hearts to winding vines that curl between your fingers to abstract art that only makes sense to him, but you don't stop him, not even when his pen gradually makes its way beyond your hand and up your arm. he's so focused, you'd hate to disrupt him.
"done!" he finally announces, a bright smile playing on his lips as he clicks his pen once more. "you like it?"
only a fool wouldn't.
in the process, he discovered that he enjoyed drawing on skin more than he thought he would, but you're definitely his favorite canvas. you'll never be safe again. you can't sit on the stairs above him, either, because he'll get your ankle for sure. his drawings on your skin are constant reminders of his presence in your life, and it becomes common for you to sport a half sleeve done in pen ink or a drawing of a cat on your knee or a drawing of saturn on your ankle or a heart at the base of your neck. once he gets his hands on you, you're done for. he's so cute i need him.

i’ve been thinking about leaving hickeys on the back and sides of momose’s neck while he tries to focus on drawing and i’m SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
sorry i just needed to say that LMAOOO
he gets frustrated, but not at YOU technically. Ends up with stray lines he ends up needing to integrate into something else but sometimes it comes out better for it and when he sees it he just remembers that technically you also had a hand in that picture. Asks if you wanna put a little signature on it next to his.
If you really start teasing him too much he's slamming that sketchbook shut and grabbing your face right then and there. He may as well be gnawing on your lips from how rough he's kissing. You wanna paint him with hickeys? he can paint you right back but it's tenfold and he's not shy with where they'll go

Boufuurin's Four Heavenly Kings and their Buddhism counterpart
We have established that Boufuurin's four teams are based on the four Buddhism gods that watch over the four directions of the world. In this post, we will dive into the correspondence and symbolism behind each team's title.
Notes: they/them pronouns for Tsubaki.
Tumblr media
Jikoku Team (Tsubaki's team)
Tumblr media
Jikoku Team is named after Dhṛtarāṣṭra, or Jikoku-ten (持国天) in Japanese, Guardian of the East. Jikoku-ten has white skin and carries a pipa (a stringed musical instrument), the sound of which calms listeners' minds. His name means "Upholder of the Nation", that is, to rule and keep the order of the kingdom, and protect its people.
A remark should be made about his role. Not only does Jikoku-ten protect all people, but he also shields the gandharva's (or gandhabba's)—non-human beings who seek shelter in trees and flowers that emit scents. Hence, Jikoku-ten is strongly connected to plants.
Now, Tsubaki's name means Camellia—a flower that represents inner strength and deep love. Story lines surrounding them also involve love and flora. From Tsubaki's feelings for Umemiya, who enjoys gardening, to the story between grandpa Ito-san and his late wife Yui-san centering a dogwood tree, it seems like the theme is very consistent.
Komoku Team (Mizuki's team)
Tumblr media
Komoku Team is named after Virūpākṣa, or Komoku-ten (広目天) in Japanese, Guardian of the West. Komoku-ten has red skin, and his name means "All-seeing" or "He Who Has Broad Objectives". His divine eyes can observe the living world, oversee all beings' actions and karma.
Mizuki, true to his title, was the strategist for Boufuurin's defense against Noroshi. He was the one to organize teams into their suitable positions and had kept an eye on Boufuurin's situation during the whole battle.
Zojo Team (Momose's team)
Tumblr media
Zojo Team is names after Virūḍhaka, or Zouchou-ten (増長天) in Japanese, Guardian of the South. Zouchou-ten has blue skin and his name means "growth" or "increase". His role is to oversee hostile gods, protect the younglings, or sprouts, and maintain Buddhism principles.
I think Momose connects to the "fostering sprouts" mission the most. From what we can pick out, he's an artist and we can assume that he somewhat influences the graffiti arts around the Fuurin school building, hence why graffiti in Fuurin has a very consistent and distinguishable style (which is a post that I'm cooking up!!!). By inducing art (not just graffiti, as we can also see random canvas paintings around Fuurin), Momose is indirectly nurturing Fuurin students' personal growth.
Tamon Team (Hiiragi's team)
Tumblr media
Tamon Team is named after Vaiśravaṇa, or Tamon-ten/Bishamon-ten (多聞天 /毘沙門天) in Japanese, Guardian of the North. Tamon-ten has yellow or green skin, is the highest ranking in the Four Heavenly Kings, and is considered the god of war. His name means "Listening to Many Teachings". Besides overseeing the living, Tamon-ten also keeps guard for Buddha's preaches. Thus, one could say he is the closest to Buddha.
Hiiragi perfectly fits into this description. Among the Boufuurin kings, he is the closest to Umemiya, even considered his right-hand man. Hiiragi is probably the strongest, too, as he was given the title of the god of war.
