Hearing other ppls messy ass stories really has me like, goddamn I am so glad I am not about that life anymore. I don't regret anything I have done or experiences I had necessarily outside of what caused me physical harm but holy shit is relative solitude and sobriety in comparison is way more enjoyable.
#like arent you exhausted im exhausted hearing about it and it is only a drop in the bucket to both our former lifestyles.#never feel bad for me when you see me talking about spending all weekend at home im srsly enjoying myself and doing what i want to do frfr#going on an outing here and there or a show and talking to a few ppl a month max including who i live with is the peace i crave#no fucking joke.#this really is solidifying my “dont reconnect with old faces or old haunts” rule being the right move though#i fucking cant. like nope. nu uh. not why i was put on this earth. bye bye.#-pers#i could stand to be on my phone less and more productive but eh even then im not unhappy with that.#other than the doom scrolling which im working on.#engaging with things i enjoy though that is am#a net positive to my mood really

you ever have those random fic tropes that you’ve been just kinda indifferent to, could take or leave them, until you randomly decide to give one fic with it a try bc it has some other tropes you like and of course you like the ship except it was so upsetting (and not in a good way) that you physically cannot bring yourself to try another fic with that trope no matter the author or fandom
#it’s bucket lists for me#cannot read any fic with a bucket list in it#which is a shame! bc i was like meh take it leave it maybe ill like this one#and then it just upset me so bad i avoid the trope full stop no matter the fandom#read the fic that killed it for me like a year ago? maybe longer?#won’t touch that trope with a barge pole now nope nope nope

I’VE GOT YOU, BABY jjk men

feat. gojo geto nanami toji sukuna shiu higuruma
sum. they thought it would be a normal night. playful bickering, eat dinner together, maybe makeout session while you two are giggling like a lovesick fool. but heart cancer? stage 3? yeah, not on their bingo cards.
warning. non-sorcerer jjk men! 23 you & 31 them, established relationships, heart cancer, death mentioned, bit angst to comfort, fluff, and not very heart warming.

GOJO SATORU
he was supposed to be in meeting.
supposed to be.
but instead he was dramatically sprawled on the couch in your apartment, shirt half-buttoned, socks mismatched, one leg hanging off the edge like he was modeling for an early 2000s teen magazine. blue eyes flicked up from your coffee table, where your textbooks were open and your laptop screen glowed with your thesis draft. he had the attention span of a goldfish, and you were used to it by now. what you weren’t used to was the man pausing mid-ramble about how coffee shops should have loyalty programs that give hugs instead of free drinks, the moment you slid the envelope across the table toward him.
“what’s this? did you finally write me a love letter?” he grinned, picking it up and waving it. “wait—let me guess, you’ve confessed your undying love for my devastatingly good looks and impeccable fashion sense. i knew the mismatched socks would win you over.”
you smirked, resting your chin in your hand. “close,” you said. “just my medical results. fun lil update from my body.”
he blinked. the paper unfolded in his hands, and for once, he was quiet. his eyes moved faster than usual. you could feel the shift in the air. from playful to something dense. cold. heavy.
he read the words again.
“stage 3, heart cancer… twenty-four percent chance to live…”
“i know, right? guess my cells just got bored of behaving,” you laughed. it was too loud. too sudden. too wrong. “could be 24% chance or survival. maybe 50%. depending on how charming i am in the oncology department.”
you force a shaky laugh. “guess i must’ve loved you too much. my heart couldn’t take it.”
for a beat, there’s nothing. nothing.
it’s a joke. a bad one. a last-ditch attempt to soften the punch. your eyes betray you anyway — tears sparkle at the corners like broken glass, and the tremble in your fingers doesn’t go unnoticed.
“shut up,” he whispered. not in his usual joking way. his voice cracked at the edge, like he’d bitten into something sour and was trying not to spit it out.
you shrugged, crossing your legs like you were just talking about the weather. “i’m still hot though, right? at least if i kick the bucket, i’m going down with great cheekbones.”
“no. nope. return to sender. i don’t accept this bullshit,” he murmurs, voice cracking through the sarcasm. “you don’t get to pull the tragic heroine card on me. that’s my thing.”
you try to laugh. “so dramatic…”
“i’m the drama. not you. you’re the soft, pretty, sunshine type who cries during dog movies and hogs the bed. you’re not allowed to die. i won’t allow it. i’ll— i’ll—”
“you’ll what, kiss it better?” you tease.
“why the fuck would you joke about this?” his voice rose. panic behind the volume. the paper in his hand crumpled a little.
“because if i don’t, i’ll start crying,” you replied, softer now. looking at him with tired eyes. “and i really, really don’t wanna cry in front of you. you’d never let me live it down.”
“you idiot,” he breathed out, standing up so fast the coffee table shook. his hands were trembling. he paced once. twice. then suddenly dropped to his knees in front of you like gravity had yanked him down.
“you’re not going to die,” he said. like a promise. like a threat to the universe. “i’ll fight death himself. with my sunglasses. and sarcasm. and maybe a bazooka.”
you blinked. “you don’t know that.”
he grabbed your hands, clutching them so tightly you could feel how cold his were. “you think you can drop something like this on me and then just—laugh about it? you think that’s fair? i love you, you dumbass.”
you looked down at him. this ridiculous, beautiful man kneeling like you’d just proposed marriage instead of dropped a medical bombshell.
you sniff, smile crookedly. “i love you too.”
he grins, forehead pressed to yours. “good. you’ll fit right in with the chaos i’ve got planned for your recovery. step one: we replace your heart with mine. step two: we break into a hospital and demand glitter IVs. step three: we live. got it? we’re gonna fight this. i don’t care if i have to bribe, blackmail, or bend space-time — you’re staying with me. you’re not allowed to leave.”
you choke out a laugh against his shoulder. “that’s a pretty bold threat to make to the universe.”
“you think i won’t square up with the universe?” he pulls back, eyes shining with something wild and terrified and real. “i’ll fight fate with one hand and spoon-feed you pudding with the other.”
you look at him, tears falling freely now, and he smiles — a little broken, a little soft.
“besides,” he adds, voice trembling as he kisses the corner of your mouth, “you still owe me like, twenty dates. and my hoodies back.”
he stared at you.
you smiled. a little cracked. a little crooked. “worth it.”
“i swear to god,” he growled, burying his face in your lap. “if you die, i’m haunting your ghost just to yell at you.”
you ran your fingers through his hair. soft. familiar. he was shaking. he didn’t want you to see. “you’re not going to die,” he whispered again, like if he repeated it enough times, it would rewrite your diagnosis.
“but if i do,” you said gently, voice steady for both of you, “please keep wearing mismatched socks for me. preferably ugly ones. the uglier, the better.”
he lifted his head and kissed your knuckles. then your palm. then your wrist. like he could map your pulse, hold onto it, anchor it. i’m gonna annoy every doctor on this planet if that’s what it takes,” he muttered. “i’m gonna sit in every waiting room and argue with every nurse and—”
“you’re already annoying,” you smiled, brushing tears off his cheek. “just keep being you, toru. okay?”
he choked out a laugh. a real one. raw and messy and breaking. “yeah,” he said, pulling you into his arms. “okay. but just so you know—if you think i’m gonna let you go without a fight, you’re really underestimating how stubborn i am.”
and you believed him.
because it was satoru gojo.
and he was chaos and comfort and love in human form.
GETO SUGURU
you didn’t expect him to come over tonight.
he had been buried in work lately—endless stacks of logistics and community events and trying to solve the world’s problems like he didn’t already carry the weight of it on his shoulders. so when he texted you “omw. bring that pouty face I like,” you assumed he was just being his usual flirty self. nothing serious.
you didn’t expect to be sitting on your bedroom floor in an oversized hoodie with a manila envelope on your lap, legs tucked beneath you, chewing on the inside of your cheek as you heard the familiar knock-knock-knock. two beats, then one. his rhythm.
he walked in with a drink carrier balanced in one hand and a bouquet of flowers that looked like they were arranged by a man who walked into the shop and said “whatever she’ll like, just make it look expensive.” his eyes lit up the second they saw you, and he gave you that half-lidded smile that made it look like he knew every secret about you.
“what’s with the envelope, babe?” he asked as he kicked his shoes off and slid beside you on the floor. “you trying to sue me for being too good-looking? because guilty as charged.”
you snorted. “nah, i’d win that case against gojo way faster.”
“mm, true.” he nudged your knee with his. “what is it then?”
you clear your throat and drop the letter dramatically on the floor next to him like it’s a bomb. “got a broken heart. me. officially. medically. romantically tragic.”
geto raises a brow, gaze drifting from the letter to you. “did i forget an anniversary again? that sounds serious.”
giving him a lazy smile. “worse. i’m in a love triangle with death and a statistics chart.”
you handed it over. said nothing after.
he cocked an eyebrow but took it. slid the letter out like he was opening one of your essays. started reading.
his smile dropped.
his breath caught.
and for once—suguru geto didn’t say anything.
he finished the page. eyes moving over the last line again. and again. his fingers curled around the edge of the letter so tightly it crinkled.
you felt like vomiting.
“stage 3, heart cancer,” you said lightly. like it was the weather. like you’d just found out the vending machine was out of your favorite chips. “only twenty-five percent chance of making it. which is still, like, a quarter! that’s one out of four. i’ve played worse odds at those arcade claw machines. like flipping a coin with feelings.”
“don’t—” his voice was hoarse. “don’t joke about this.”
“why not?” you forced a grin. “i thought you liked my dark humor.”
he turned to you so fast, your smile faltered.
“i do,” he said, barely a whisper. “but not when it’s hiding how scared you are.”
and that was the worst part. the way he saw through you. you looked away. bit your tongue. tried to force another joke but your throat closed up and it never made it out. “you should be crying,” he said softly. “you should be screaming. you should be throwing things or cursing god or making me carry you everywhere like a princess.”
“yeah well,” you mumbled. “you’ve always liked me better when i’m quiet.”
“don’t say that.” his hand cupped your cheek, turning your face toward him. “don’t ever say that.”
you blinked. his thumb wiped away something you didn’t realize had fallen.
“baby—”
“i’m going to be here for all of it,” he said firmly. his voice steady, even if his hands trembled. “chemo. surgeries. crying fits. mood swings. i’ll buy you every stupid snack craving you have, i’ll hold your hair back if you puke, i’ll even let satoru come over if you’re bored enough to tolerate him.”
“wow,” you said, voice thick. “must really love me if you’re willing to suffer through that.”
he laughed, but it cracked halfway through. he leaned in and kissed your forehead. your nose. your cheeks. slow. deliberate. like he was memorizing your face before the world dared to change it.
“you’re the love of my life,” he murmured against your skin. “and i don’t care what percentage the doctors give. you’re not leaving me.”
you tried to joke again. to keep it light. but when he pulled you into his arms and held you like you were made of glass and might disappear if he didn’t hold tight enough—
you broke.
and he just let you.
silent. steady. his hand rubbing circles into your back. his voice a whisper. “i’ve got you, baby. every step. every breath. we’re fighting this. together.”
NANAMI KENTO
he was never one for surprises.
nanami lived his life in clean lines and structured time—an adult in every sense of the word. the kind of man who folded his clothes before bed, who ironed your uniforms when you were too tired, who always had a clock running in his head. you were chaos in comparison. soft blankets thrown over chairs, tea mugs with lipstick smudges left by your bedside, textbooks covered in doodles. yet somehow, you and him had always fit together like an odd, unlikely pair.
tonight, he showed up exactly at 7:00 p.m.
punctual, like always.
“i brought you dinner,” he said, holding up two paper bags. “i made sure it’s from that place you like with the spicy tofu you claim doesn’t make you cry but always does.”
you smiled, opening the door wider for him. “ah, you remembered. see? you do love me.”
he gave you a flat look, setting the bags on your kitchen counter. “i tell you every day. if you need evidence beyond that, i can start writing it down in your planner.”
“ooh, planner declarations of love? sounds sexy.”
he gave a soft, almost-smile. you could tell he’d had a long day. the way he rolled his sleeves up, undid the top two buttons of his shirt, and sighed like he was finally somewhere safe. you wanted so badly to keep it peaceful. to let him enjoy one evening without—
but the envelope sat on the kitchen table. taunting you.
“ken,” you said softly, “before we eat… can you read something?”
his brow furrowed. “is this another one of your thesis drafts? i told you i am not proofreading any more literary analyses about how tragic men are secretly hot—”
“it’s not,” you said, quieter this time.
he walked over. saw the envelope. took it wordlessly.
you watched him read. nanami read carefully—line by line. never skimmed. never rushed. so it took longer. you could hear the second his breath changed. shallow. barely audible. then it stopped altogether.
he didn’t speak. didn’t ask questions. he simply folded the letter back up and set it down with precision. like it was something sacred. dangerous.
“why didn’t you call me when you got this?” he asked, voice low. serious. his control was razor sharp, but you could hear the grief pressing against his throat.
“i… didn’t want you to leave work in the middle of a meeting,” you muttered. “and i didn’t wanna cry about it either. figured i’d tell you in person. like a grown-up.”
“stage 3, heart cancer is not something you break like a casual news update,” he snapped—then immediately closed his eyes, sighing. “i’m sorry. i didn’t mean to raise my voice.”
“it’s okay,” you said, wrapping your arms around yourself. “i figured you’d be mad.”
“i’m not mad,” he said, walking around the table toward you. “i’m terrified.”
“it’s still there,” you whispered. “it’s just… fuzzy now. like a dream i can’t quite remember when i wake up.”
you looked up at him. that composed, unshakable man. and for the first time in a long time, nanami looked lost. “you’re young,” he said, almost to himself. “you’re in college. you have plans. you talk about the future like it’s something guaranteed.”
“you really mean that?” your voice cracked.
his jaw clenched. he pulled you into his chest, his hands pressing against your back, like he could physically hold you together. you could feel how hard he was trying not to fall apart. “then i’ll remember it for you,” he said quietly. “your future. your dreams. if you forget them… i’ll carry them until you can take them back.”
“of course,” he said, resting his chin on your head. “you’re the love of my life. i didn’t choose you for convenience. i chose you because i wanted every part of your life—good and bad. if this is what we’re facing now… then we face it. together.”
you buried your face in his chest, inhaling that familiar scent of bergamot and black tea. the comfort of his heartbeat. the way he was always so steady, even when the world wasn’t.
“but just so we’re clear,” he said, pulling back slightly to look at you, “you’re not going to die. not anytime soon. not before i make you my wife.”
you blinked. “wait—what?”
“i’m not proposing,” he said flatly. “not while you’re crying. but you should know… that’s where this was always headed.”
your tears doubled. “ken—”
“shh,” he kissed your temple. “we’ll talk about it after dinner. and after you stop pretending tofu doesn’t make you sob like a child.”
you laughed. you couldn’t help it.
and for the first time since getting the diagnosis, you let yourself feel safe.
TOJI FUSHIGURO
toji was already lounging on your couch when you got home.
shirt half unbuttoned, legs spread like he owned the place—which, okay, he kind of did at this point, considering how often he crashed here. one arm slung over the back of the couch, the other nursing a can of beer he probably picked up on the way over. he didn’t look up when you walked in, just tilted his head slightly and smirked like he could smell the anxiety radiating off you.
“you look like shit,” he said casually, eyes still on the muted TV.
“thanks, baby,” you replied, dropping your bag by the door. “your romantic side is really showing today.”
“you want romance, go read a damn poem.” he finally looked at you. eyes narrowing. “you okay?”
you shrugged and walked into the kitchen, not answering. you knew that tone in his voice. low. suspicious. the kind he only used when he felt something off and didn’t like it one bit.
you took your time. poured a glass of water. leaned against the counter. stared at the envelope in your hand like it might explode if you set it down.
“toji,” you called.
“hm?”
“can you come here?”
he groaned dramatically but stood, beer in hand, and sauntered into the kitchen. he leaned against the counter across from you, expression unreadable. he scanned your face like he was piecing something together.
you handed him the envelope without a word.
he took it. read it.
you watched every flicker of emotion pass through his face. confusion. stillness. a furrowed brow. the tightening of his jaw. and then—rage. not loud. not messy. quiet. slow-burning. the kind that sat in his chest like a bomb with no timer.
he didn’t say anything at first.
just set the envelope down and looked at you. dead in the eye.
“how long have you known?”
“just a few days.”
“and you didn’t tell me?” his voice was low. flat.
you sighed. “i didn’t want to see your face like this.”
“like what?”
“like the world ended.”
he stepped closer. his voice dropped even lower.
“you think i give a fuck about the world?” he said slowly. “i care about you. you think you can just carry this shit alone and joke your way through it? you think that’s cute?”
“i didn’t want you to panic,” you murmured, avoiding his gaze. “i didn’t want to cry. or make it real. if i said it out loud—”
“then i’ll say it for you,” he interrupted. “you have heart cancer. stage 3. twenty-four percent odds. and guess what?”
you finally looked at him.
“we’re beating the shit outta those odds.”
you blinked. “what?”
he crossed the distance between you and pulled you into him. his grip wasn’t gentle—it was grounding. like he needed to feel your heartbeat against his chest to believe you were still here.
“you’re not dying on me,” he said, voice rough. “you hear me? i’ve lost enough people. you’re not going to be one of them. i’ll chain you to the damn bed if i have to. feed you. fight the doctors. i don’t care.”
“toji—”
“nah, shut up. you’re not allowed to talk until you admit i’m right and that i’m hotter than your oncologist.”
you choked out a laugh. “okay. you’re right. you’re hotter than any man with a medical license.”
“damn straight,” he muttered, lips brushing your forehead. “we’re getting through this. and i don’t care if you lose your hair or your strength or your mind a little bit along the way. you’ll still be mine. all of you.”
you didn’t say anything. didn’t need to. you just stood there with his arms around you, the only place that felt like home when everything else felt like hell.
he kissed the side of your head and sighed. “fuck. now i gotta start acting like a responsible adult.”
“guess you better start taking your vitamins, old man.”
“if i die before you, i’m haunting your ass. every time you try to pee, i’ll slam a cabinet door.”
you burst out laughing. crying. something in between. he held you tighter.
“that’s better,” he muttered. “cry in my arms like a normal person, not in the shower like a movie heroine.”
and just like that, you knew he wasn’t going anywhere.
RYOMEN SUKUNA
you found him in the bedroom, stretched across your bed like a damn king—which, technically, he insisted he was. shirtless, as usual. arms behind his head, eyes closed, expression too calm for a man with a bloodstained past and a mouth as foul as his reputation. the room smelled faintly like sandalwood and your shampoo, which he secretly used but would never admit to.
you stood in the doorway with the envelope clenched in your hand.
“oi, sukuna.”
his eyes cracked open, one brow lazily lifting. “what, brat? come to beg for kisses or annoy me until i carry you to class again?”
you forced a grin, walking in slowly. “tempting, but no. i’ve got something for you.”
“better be food or something perverted.”
you sat beside him, the envelope now shaking a little in your fingers. you hated how that tremor betrayed you. sukuna didn’t miss it. his eyes shifted to your hand, narrowing.
“what the hell is that?”
“diagnosis,” you said simply, tossing it onto his chest.
he caught it midair, scoffing. “what, did they finally diagnose you with being insufferable?”
“close. heart cancer. stage three. they gave me a twenty-four percent chance of living.” you tried to say it lightly. like it was a weather report. “cloudy with a chance of death, haha.”
sukuna didn’t laugh.
his eyes scanned the page. slower than usual. and his silence—it wasn’t dramatic, it was dangerous. the air felt like it thickened. you could almost hear his jaw clench.
“tch,” he scoffed. “twenty-four percent? what a bunch of weaklings. you don’t need their odds. you’ve got me.”
you blinked at him. “...you?”
“yeah. i’m keeping you alive. i’m not letting you leave me over some pathetic little tumor.”
you tried to keep the smile on your face, tried to keep the mood light like you always did. “damn. here i was thinking i’d finally get some peace and quiet.”
he sat up then—so suddenly the bed shifted with the force. his hand gripped your chin, tilting your face toward him, his expression unreadable but his eyes blazing.
“don’t you dare joke about dying,” he growled. “not to me. not when you know what it would do to me.“
you tried to look away, but his fingers held you still. “sukuna…”
“do you know what i’ve done to people who’ve left me?” he whispered, and for once his voice wasn’t teasing—it was trembling.
“terrible things,” you murmured. “you’ve told me.”
“and yet, you’re the only one i’ve ever let touch me without blood on your hands,” he hissed. “the only one i’d share my bed with. laugh with. let sleep on my chest like some damn lovesick fool.”
you bit your lip. your bravado cracked. “...i’m scared.”
and that was all it took for him to pull you into his lap, arms winding around you with the kind of desperation he rarely ever let surface.
“good,” he muttered into your shoulder. “you should be. but not because of death. because if you think i’ll let you go through this alone, you clearly don’t know who the hell you’re dating.”
you buried your face into his neck, breathing in his warmth, his scent, the familiar thrum of something ancient and furious living in his chest.
“you’ll lose your hair?” he murmured. “i don’t care. you’ll puke every day? i’ll hold the damn bucket. cry at three a.m.? i’ll cuss out the moon for looking at you wrong.”
you choked out a laugh. “the moon, huh?”
“fucking moon thinks it’s allowed to shine on you while you’re in pain? not on my watch.”
he leaned back slightly, cupping your cheek now with uncharacteristic softness. “you don’t need to act strong for me, you little brat. cry. scream. sleep for days. whatever you need. i’ll be here.”
“...even when i look like a zombie?”
“you already look half-dead when you wake up. won’t be much of a change.”
you smacked his chest. he grinned.
and then he pressed his forehead against yours, a rare show of intimacy, his voice dropping so low you barely caught it:
“you’re mine. and i don’t give a fuck if it takes all my strength, my fury, my everything. you will survive this. not because the doctors said so. but because i won’t let you die.”
and for once, even with your heart breaking and your future uncertain, you believed him.
because when a monster like sukuna swore something, the universe listened.
SHIU KONG
the sun was already setting by the time you made it to his office.
you found him exactly how you expected: sleeves rolled up, shirt slightly wrinkled, tie loosened like he’d been too busy all day to care about appearances. he was hunched over his desk, fingers typing something sharp, probably threatening someone with policy violations and scary legal jargon. a half-empty glass of whiskey sat beside his monitor, untouched for hours. the room smelled like cologne and stress.
you stood in the doorway, clutching the envelope.
“shiu.”
his eyes didn’t lift right away—just one flick of them toward you, annoyed, until he saw your face. that was all it took.
he straightened. “what happened?”
“nothing,” you said too quickly. “or, i mean... something. yeah. i brought you something.”
you walked in, trying to act normal. like this wasn’t going to detonate his whole night. you placed the envelope on top of a stack of case files like it was a stupid postcard or a coupon for pizza.
he picked it up, his frown deepening with every line he read.
“you’re joking,” he said flatly.
“i wish.”
he looked at you. hard. no emotion at first—just that sharp, calculating gaze that made grown men fold. but you knew him too well. you saw the cracks right away: his fingers tightening around the paper. the twitch in his jaw. the breath he held too long before letting it out.
“stage three?” he said. “twenty-four percent survival?”
you leaned against the wall, arms crossed, trying to keep it light.
“well, if i was a stock, you probably wouldn't invest in me, huh?”
“what the fuck is wrong with you?” he snapped.
you blinked.
“jesus, shiu, calm down—”
“no. i’m not calming down. you walk into my office with this,” he shook the letter, “and joke about it? you think this is funny? you think i can just read this and go back to work?”
you stayed quiet.
he stood up, pacing now. one hand dragging through his hair, the other still holding the paper like it was covered in blood. his voice dropped low. rough.
“why didn’t you tell me sooner?”
“i didn’t want to ruin your week.”
he turned slowly. "you think any of this matters if you’re not in it?"
that one hit harder than you expected. your throat tightened.
he sighed harshly and stepped toward you, eyes dark, voice steadier now but no less intense. “look at me.”
you did.
he cupped your face, thumbs brushing your cheeks like he was trying to memorize every inch.
"you don’t get to carry this alone,” he said. “not with me around. not for a second."
you bit your lip. “i didn’t want you to treat me like i was dying.”
“i’m not treating you like you’re dying. i’m treating you like you’re mine. and you are. and i don’t care how brutal this fight gets, how many appointments we sit through, how sick you get, how tired—i’m staying.”
you exhaled shakily, and his hands slid down to your waist, pulling you against him like he could keep the sickness away just by holding you tighter.
“you’re not allowed to go before me,” he murmured into your hair. “i’m the old one here, remember?”
you smiled weakly. “so what, you’re giving me permission to outlive you?”
“i’m giving you orders. and you always listen to your boss.”
“you’re not my boss, shiu.”
“wanna bet?”
you leaned your head against his chest, finally letting your tears soak into his shirt. his arms stayed locked around you like a shield.
“i’m scared,” you whispered.
he kissed your temple, voice rough and sure.
“then be scared. just don’t be alone.”
HIGURUMA HIROMI
he always stayed up too late when he was working. piles of case files, half-drunk cups of green tea gone cold, classical music humming low in the background like it could drown out the weight of the world. the desk lamp lit his tired eyes in soft gold, his brows furrowed in that focused way you knew meant he hadn’t even noticed the time—or eaten.
you hovered at the doorway for a second, gripping the envelope. stage 3. 24%. ugly numbers typed in a clinical font that suddenly felt louder than the damn music.
“hiromi.”
he glanced up, his features instantly softening the second he saw you. “you’re still up. what’s wrong?”
you tried to smirk. “well. i’m about to ruin your night. so buckle in, counselor.”
he frowned and pushed his chair back, straightening. “what happened?”
you crossed the room, placed the envelope down in front of him like you were handing in an assignment. “that’s my diagnosis.”
he didn’t move for a few seconds. just stared at it. like touching it would confirm the dread blooming in his chest. but he opened it, scanned the words, and then—
his shoulders stiffened. just slightly. like a man being sentenced.
“heart cancer,” he murmured, voice almost too calm. “stage three. twenty-four percent survival rate.”
“yeah,” you said with a dry chuckle. “bit dramatic, right? could’ve given me a 30% for optimism.”
his eyes snapped up to yours, unreadable.
“you’re making jokes?”
“if i don’t, i’ll cry. and i figured one of us should hold it together.”
his jaw tensed, and he stood slowly, walking around the desk with a kind of methodical grace that always made your heart skip. he stopped in front of you, one hand resting on your cheek like he was scared you’d vanish.
“you’ve known… how long?”
“got the results a few days ago.”
“and you didn’t tell me?”
you looked down. “i didn’t want to be the reason you stopped working. you’ve got enough to deal with. i didn’t want to be another case file on your desk.”
he flinched like you slapped him.
“you’re not a case file,” he said firmly. “you’re not just another name. you’re—” his voice broke, just a little. “you’re everything.”
you couldn’t hold it anymore. your voice cracked. “i’m scared.”
his arms were around you instantly, firm and grounding. his hand cupped the back of your head, pressing you into his chest like you belonged there and only there.
“then be scared,” he whispered into your hair. “and i’ll be scared with you. but don’t think for a second i’ll let you go through this alone.”
you held onto his blazer, gripping the fabric like it could anchor you. “i don’t want you to see me fall apart.”
“i’ve seen people fall apart,” he said. “i know what that looks like. this isn’t that. this is you being brave. this is you still showing up, still standing, even when you're hurting.”
you pulled back just enough to look at him, eyes glassy. “what if i die?”
his hand slid to your cheek, thumb brushing a tear away. “then i’ll have spent every last day making sure you knew you were loved. and if you live—and you will, because you’re stronger than any verdict—they’ll write books about how you told death to wait.”
you laughed through the tears. “that’s a little dramatic, even for a lawyer.”
he smiled, just barely. “i learned from the best.”
and then he kissed you—soft, reverent, like a man clinging to hope.
“we’ll fight this,” he whispered. “and i’ll be with you every step of the way. suits and all.”
i made this after re-watch now is good and just can’t help myself. i know, i know it was basic, classic drama, the girl is sick, has cancer, everyone wrote about it, i know. but i enjoy writing this so much, i may or may not make a mini series about them, do you guys will enjoy it if i make this longer? please let me know! 🫣

Hey Perky

Chris x fem!reader
Warnings: Suggestive MDNI
Genre: Best friends, fluff
Summary: Your best friend Chris drags you out for a run early in the morning. And you regret not carrying a hoodie with you, when you face a rather perky situation.
a/n: Somewhat based on a real life situation 🤭Hope you all had a nice weekend. I hate Sunday evenings, they're really the most miserable time of the week for me. Anyway. have a goodnight!
It was 5 a.m., and the air was crisp and everything around you was covered in fog. You stood outside your apartment building, rubbing sleep off your eyes, dressed in a tank top and running shorts, because someone - aka your obnoxiously health-conscious bestie, Chris - had decided that you’re done living like this.
You scoffed as he approached you, dressed in a fitted black hoodie and shorts, looking annoyingly awake and bright for this hour. His dimpled grin was far too cheerful for the crack of dawn.
“You ready, babe?” he teased, bouncing on his toes.
“Chris, I’m only here because you bribed me with breakfast. Let’s get this over with.” You snapped.
He squinted at you, his gaze landing on your bare arms.
“Where’s your hoodie? It’s freezing out here.”
“I’ll be fine,” you said, stretching dramatically to prove your point. “It’s gonna get hot once we start running. I’m not sweating buckets in a hoodie.”
Chris raised an eyebrow, his lips twitching like he was holding back a laugh.
“You’re gonna regret that. It’s like 10 degrees out here.”
“I’ll survive, Mr. Aussie. Let's go.” you retorted, sticking out your tongue.
He shook his head, muttering something about your stubbornness, and tried one more time.
“Last chance. Grab a hoodie, or you will be whining later.” he said again.
“Nope!” you chirped, already jogging in place to warm up. “Let’s go, gym bro.”
Chris sighed, but his eyes sparkled with amusement. “Fine, but don’t come crying to me when you’re a human popsicle.”
---
The run started off okay. Chris set a steady pace, making it look effortless while you huffed and puffed to keep up. The fog swirled around you, clinging to the empty streets, and the cold air stung your lungs with every breath. You were wheezing, internally cursing your fate. But you were too stubborn to admit that Chris may have been right about the hoodie situation.
You were sweating. Yes. You thought you would be fine.
But when you slowed to a walk, catching your breath (panting like a dog) - the cold hit you like a truck. The chill seeped into you, arms prickling with goosebumps, a shiver running down your spine.
You ran your hands up and down the skin of your arms, trying to warm up, but your body wasn't taking it. Your skin continued to tingle - from head to toe - and you shivered almost violently.
Chris, who was walking ahead of you, turned around just then.
“Hey, I was thinking-”
His words died in throat just as quick, and he whipped his head away, cheeks flushing a bright shade of pink. He stared at the foggy street ahead like it was the most fascinating thing he'd ever seen.
You frowned, confused. “What’s wrong with you?”
“Nothing!” Chris said, way too quickly, his voice an octave higher than usual.
You followed as he starting walking again, and you could see that he was looking anywhere but at you, his ears glowing red.
You narrowed your eyes, suspicious, and then it hit you.
Dear God.
You glanced down at the obvious problem - your tank top was a traitor. Because it did absolutely nothing to shield you from this situation - the situation being your nipples standing at full attention, literally screaming through the fabric.
You gasped, throwing your arms over your chest.
“OH MY GOD!”
“What -” Chris whirled around to look and saw you standing there with a pout, you arms covering your chest dramatically.
“Chris, you perv!”
“I didn’t do anything!” he protested, finally meeting your eyes, his hands flailing defensively. “I just turned around, and - boom! They were just there! What was I supposed to do, not see?”
“Oh my God, you’re the worst!” you squeaked, but you couldn’t help the laugh bubbling up. His flustered expression had you cackling.
“I’m not the one who refused a hoodie!” he fired back, pointing an accusing finger. “I told you it was cold! This is on you, Y/N!”
You snorted, throwing your head back as you laughed.
“It’ll Be Too Hot When I Run.’” Chris imitated you, and you were both laughing now, doubled over on the sidewalk, your arms relaxing now.
“You could’ve warned me, you idiot!” you managed between gasps.
“Warned you?!” Chris asked, wheezing. “What did you want me to say?”
The laughter was so loud it echoed in the quiet street, and you were too busy cackling to notice a random guy walking past, his eyes blatantly lingering on you. Chris, however, clocked it immediately.
His laughter cut off, and his eyes narrowed as he watched the guy like a hawk. He started shrugging off his hoodie, but then there wasn't that much time when the guy was being a creep and staring at you like that.
“Oh, hell no,” Chris muttered under his breath.
In one smooth move, he stepped in front of you and pulled you into a hug, wrapping his arms around you to block the guy’s view. His chest was warm against your chilled skin, and you almost sighed in relief (from the cold), wrapping your own arms around him, feeling his heartbeat through his shirt.
“Nothing to see here, mate,” Chris said loudly, his voice dripping with protectiveness as he glared over your shoulder at the guy.
You were snickering against his shoulder so hard you could barely breathe.
“Chris, what are you doing?”
“Saving your dignity,” he said, his tone mock-serious, but you could feel his grin against your hair. “Gotta make sure he knows who’s got your back.”
The guy scurried off, and Chris pulled back just enough to drape his hoodie over your shoulders.
“There. Now put those things away before they poke my eyes out.”
Your jaw dropped, and you swatted his arm, hard.
“Christopher Bang!”
He laughed, dodging another swat, his dimples on full display.
“What? I’m just stating facts! They were, like, aggressive.”
“Oh my God, stop!” you said, pulling the hoodie tighter around you.
His eyes were still dancing with mischief, but there was a softer edge to them now, like he was checking to make sure you were okay.
“You good?” he asked, his voice dropping to that low, warm tone that always made your stomach flip.
“Yeah,” you mumbled, suddenly shy. “Thanks for the hoodie, perv.”
“Anytime, perky,” he shot back, winking.
You groaned, shoving him playfully, but the air between you was buzzing with something unspoken. As you started walking back toward your apartment, Chris slung an arm around your shoulders, pulling you close to keep you warm. You leaned into him, your laughter fading into comfortable silence, and you couldn’t help but think that maybe these early morning runs weren’t so bad after all.

Baby
Pairing: Dean x you | Established relationship
Summary: Dean’s taking care of his Baby, and you take care of yours.. 😏
Warnings: Sexual tension, smut, Rated R, taking care of Dean, oral receiving, overstimulation, no use of y/n. Proceed with caution
The sun was high and merciless, casting golden light across the bunker’s driveway. You stood just outside the garage, leaned against the doorframe with your arms crossed, pretending to sip your iced coffee—but you hadn’t taken a drink in at least five minutes.
Not when Dean was out there, shirtless, jeans slung low on his hips, bent over Baby with a sponge in one hand and a bucket at his feet. His movements were methodical, focused. The kind of care he usually reserved for a hunt, or for you.
Water clung to his skin, rivulets snaking down his chest and soaking the waistband of his jeans. A single drop slid from his temple, tracing his jaw before it disappeared into the scruff on his throat. And the way his arms flexed as he scrubbed the hood?
Yeah. You were sweating and it wasn’t from the heat.
You bit your lip, watching the muscles in his back shift, every line of him on full display under the afternoon sun. It was honestly rude.
You turned, sauntered back inside just long enough to grab one of the cold beers from the fridge, then stepped out again—this time with purpose.
Dean didn’t hear you right away, too busy rinsing off the soap with a low whistle under his breath. But when you crossed to his side and held out the beer, his eyes flicked over with that lazy, sun-warmed smirk.
“Well hey there, sweetheart. You tryin’ to steal my heart with a cold one?”
“Think you could use a break,” you said sweetly, handing it over. “You’re starting to glisten.”
He chuckled, twisting the cap off and taking a long pull. “Glisten, huh?”
“Mmhmm.” Your eyes trailed down his body, not bothering to be subtle. “Or maybe sweat like a sinner in church.”
Dean gave a slow, smug look in your direction. “And what’s that make you, starin’ like that?”
“Thirsty,” you replied, licking your lips, voice low.
And then—without giving him a second to reply—you dropped to your knees right there, beside the Impala’s tire, resting your hands lightly on his thighs.
Dean froze. The bottle hovered mid-air.
“…Sweetheart?”
You looked up at him through your lashes, playful and wicked all at once. “Figured I’d help you cool down.”
He blinked, then glanced around the mostly-empty garage lot like he couldn’t believe his luck. “You’re serious?”
Your hands slid higher, fingers teasing at the button of his jeans. “I don’t joke when I’m this turned on.”
Dean let out a slow, wrecked breath—one that came from somewhere deep in his gut—and leaned back against the Impala with a crooked smile. “Remind me to wash Baby more often…”
Dean’s hand tightened around the neck of the beer bottle, knuckles flexing as he stared down at you like you were a mirage. The sun was beating down, his jeans clinging to his hips from the water, his skin slick and hot, and now—this.
You. On your knees. Looking up at him with that spark in your eyes that never failed to knock the wind out of him.
Dean’s breath caught when your nails lightly grazed over the damp denim between his legs. He let his head fall back with a low groan, the bottle dangling from his hand.
“Jesus…”
“Nope,” you teased, pressing a kiss to the sharp line of his hip, right where his jeans dipped low. “Just me.”
Dean hissed through his teeth, hips shifting ever so slightly toward your mouth. “You’re dangerous, y’know that?”
You glanced up at him again, eyes locked with his. “Then stop me.”
He didn’t. He wouldn’t. Not even if his life depended on it.
Instead, he exhaled hard and set the bottle on Baby’s roof with a thunk, both hands coming down to tangle in your hair as your kisses got lower, slower, maddeningly patient.
“God, sweetheart…” he rasped, voice all gravel and need. “You’re gonna kill me.”
“You’ll die happy.”
You let your hands slide up, undoing the button on his jeans like you had all the time in the world, then tugging the zipper down, slow and deliberate. You pressed your mouth to the skin just above the waistband, soft, open-mouthed kisses that made his thighs tense under your touch.
And when you finally pulled him free, when your hand wrapped around his cock and you leaned in, Dean’s head thunked softly back against the car.
“Fuuuuck.”
The heat, the sun, the glint of sweat still on his chest—everything felt electric as you kissed his tip once, soft and slow. Not even taking him in yet, just tasting, teasing, letting him feel every ounce of restraint you still had.
He looked down at you, pupils blown wide, chest rising with each unsteady breath. “You’re gonna make me lose my mind.”
You smiled, your breath hot against his skin. “That’s the plan.”
You didn’t give him a warning. Just wrapped your lips around him, slow and warm and steady, your tongue tracing the underside of his shaft like you already knew every inch by heart.
Dean choked out a low curse and immediately grabbed hold of the car’s roof with one hand, the other staying buried in your hair like he needed that anchor to keep from floating off the ground.
“Oh—shit, baby…”
His voice cracked somewhere between pleasure and disbelief, already breathless. The kind of sound that made you feel powerful, needed, like your name was echoing in every corner of his body.
You set a rhythm—slow, steady, intentional—like you wanted him to feel every pass of your tongue, every flick, every tight pull of your lips around him. Your hands held him gently but firmly at the base, not letting him thrust, not letting him take. This was yours.
“God, you feel so good…” he groaned, chest heaving, sweat trickling down his neck. “Sweetheart… I’m—fuck.”
You hummed around him, eyes flicking up just in time to catch the way his lashes fluttered, the way his mouth parted, and then—there it was. That soft, broken moan. The one he couldn’t control. The one he only gave you.
His hips jerked the tiniest bit, and you squeezed your lips around him gently, letting go with a quiet pop before licking slowly up the length of his cock—just to make him whimper.
“Y’alright there, Winchester?” you murmured, breath hot against him.
He let out a laugh that was half a gasp, voice wrecked. “You’re… evil.”
“Mmhmm,” you purred. “And you love it.”
Dean’s hand tightened in your hair, the muscles in his thighs twitching beneath your touch. “Too much,” he admitted. “Way too much.”
And then you took him again—this time deeper, slower, holding him at the back of your throat just long enough to make his knees buckle.
“Oh God, sweetheart—”
He was panting now, torn between gripping the car and your hair, his stomach tensing under the pressure, his voice unraveling in your name and little broken sounds you didn’t think he even realized he was making.
“Baby, baby, baby—fuck—I’m not gonna last, not like this—”
You didn’t ease up. If anything, you tightened your grip on him, your pace steady but still gentle, coaxing, loving. Letting him fall apart under your mouth.
And when he finally came—his hips giving one last, helpless buck, your name torn from his throat like a prayer—you didn’t stop.
Even as Dean’s hips stuttered and his grip loosened in your hair, even as he groaned your name like he thought he was done—you stayed right there, swallowing everything he had to give. Lips wrapped around him, tongue teasing the tip and underside of his cock, slow and deliberate.
Dean cursed, breath hitching hard. “Oh—Jesus, baby, wait—”
You pulled back just slightly, just enough to speak—your voice a sultry whisper against his flushed skin. “Mm-mm. Not done with you yet.”
His hand fumbled at the roof of the car like he needed something solid, something to keep him upright. “Holy fuck.”
You smiled, devilish and sweet, then dragged your tongue up the sensitive underside of his cock again, slow enough to make his knees tremble. His thighs were already tense, his stomach jumping with every flick of your tongue over the tip of his dick. And when you hollowed your cheeks and took him deep once more?
Dean gasped—a wrecked, desperate sound—and his knees gave just a little.
“Baby, please, I—I can’t—“
You hummed, vibrations shooting straight through him, and the hand in your hair tightened again—this time more like a lifeline than control.
He was a mess now. Breath ragged. Muscles trembling. The kind of overwhelmed that made his voice break when he tried to say your name and could barely get it out.
“I’m—fuck, sweetheart, it’s too much—too good—”
Tears pricked at the corners of his eyes as his head fell back against Baby, lips parted, skin burning from head to toe. You kept your rhythm—soft but unyielding, dragging every single second of overstimulation out of him until his thighs quaked and his voice cracked into a broken moan.
“Baby, I’m gonna—God, I’m gonna cum again—”
You didn’t stop. You didn’t dare. You kept your hands steady, your pace just enough to push him straight over that edge a second time.
And when it hit—when his entire body shuddered and his knees finally gave out—you caught him. Hands sliding up to hold his hips, grounding him as he collapsed half-limp against Baby, gasping like he’d just been hit by lightning.
He whimpered, hand still tangled in your hair, body spent, wrecked, twitching with every aftershock.
You kissed the inside of his thigh as you finally pulled off of him, slow and gentle now. Soothing. Worshipful.
Dean could barely lift his head, eyes glassy, jaw slack, still trying to remember how to breathe.
“Y—you…” He swallowed thickly. “You’re evil. Holy shit, you’re…”
You climbed to your feet, brushing your lips across his cheek. “Still think I was just bringing you a beer?”
Dean let out a hoarse, breathless laugh, wrapping an arm around your waist and burying his face in your neck.
“Next time I wash Baby, I’m doin’ it fully clothed. In a locked garage.”
You grinned. “Not a chance, Winchester.”

But what about Oscar? (!)
Request: anon <3
Pairing: Brother!Max Verstappen x Sister!reader
Themes: max fluff is back my books
Warnings: favoritism (with a child okay chill)
Summary: Cheering for her brother? Nope! Oscar is so much better.

“Pole just means you go first,” she deadpanned, looking about as excited as someone waiting for a dentist appointment. Max honestly felt like he’d just been dunked on by a moody pre-teen in a Lightning McQueen tee.
He made another go at it, sounding a bit desperate. “But my car was the fastest.”
Y/N just shrugged, twirling the string of her Verstappen cap like it was the world’s most boring fidget toy. “Oscar’s cool.”
Savage. The brutality. Max started wondering if this was cosmic payback for every time he’d punted someone wide at turn one.
Lando wandered over, grinning like he’d just watched a cat fall off a table. “Yikes, mate. She’s ice cold.”
“Yeah, cheers, Lando. Super helpful.”
Later, in the drivers’ room, Oscar strolled in, halfway through a granola bar. Max gave him a look. Maybe a bit too much intensity there. Oscar froze, granola mid-chomp.
“Uh, you good?”
Max groaned and dragged his hands over his face. “She didn’t even care about pole. Just asked where you were.”
Oscar blinked, then smirked. “She’s got her favorites.”
“Yeah, and apparently, it’s not me. Betrayal.”
Oscar flopped into a chair, looking way too relaxed. “Would you rather she liked Lando?”
“God, no. He’d have her driving a golf cart into Lake Como.”
Oscar cracked up, and, honestly, Max couldn’t stay mad. Not at Oscar. The guy was like if a Labrador put on a bucket hat and learned to talk.
After the race, Y/N was waiting in the garage with a tiny McLaren plushie clutched in her hands. She didn’t even blink at Max’s champagne-soaked race suit—just bolted straight for Oscar, who scooped her up like it was the most normal thing ever.
“Good race, Y/N?” he asked.
She nodded so hard her hat nearly fell off. “You went so fast.”
Max, still dripping, threw his hands in the air. “I win at home and my little sister’s giving all the credit to Piastri. Unreal.”
Lando sidled over, smirking like a little gremlin. “Guess you’ll have to step up your game, champ.”
“Or just bribe her with cookies,” Max muttered.
Oscar glanced over, sheepish. “She, uh, gave me this.” He held up a crumpled, slightly sticky drawing. It was… probably him? Maybe? Hard to say.
Max squinted. “She’s never drawn me with that many hearts.”
Oscar tried not to look smug. He failed. Miserably.
Weeks ticked by. Max tried everything—matching socks, extra bedtime stories, even a sneaky turn in the Red Bull sim (Christian would actually combust if he found out). Didn’t matter. Oscar was still her sun, moon, and all the stars.
One night, after a long slog at the track, Max found Y/N crashed out next to Oscar in the hospitality lounge, mouth open, dead to the world. Oscar looked over, awkward but weirdly proud.
“Sorry, mate. Think she likes me more.”
Max just sighed, a little defeated but kinda okay with it. “Yeah. She’s got pretty solid taste.”
Oscar grinned. “Must run in the family.”
Max rolled his eyes, but his chest didn’t feel so tight.
Honestly? If his little sister was gonna worship someone, Oscar wasn’t the worst choice. Not even close.
And maybe Max could get used to sharing the spotlight—at least until Y/N decided Toto Wolff was her new obsession. At that point, all bets were off.

Chapter 3 of Blurr’s storyline in Mecha AU!
Previous chapter
“Speaking of Mechs.” continues Blurr, ”That thing's evacuation system sucks. What if you were stunned by the fall? What if something short-circuits and starts a fire???”
Swindle just clenches the glass in his hands. Feels the cold moisture of condensation dripping down onto his fingers.
“Then I'd burn.” he doesn't say
Under the cut⤵️
——————————————————
It's Swindle's birthday.
He thinks it is.
He's pretty sure.
Since he was taken into the program, it's always hard to tell. It's like time flows differently here. He had a calendar, but Brawl put it somewhere a while ago and then forgot where it was. And they're not allowed to have phones yet. Though Swindle assumes Onslaught managed to steal one from someone anyway.
Shit. Where's the calendar?
Swindle remembers the date, but can't remember the month.
There's a strange static tingling sensation in the back of his head. If he turns his head too fast, it'll grow into an unpleasant pricking pain.
The last time in the lab was disgusting.
He can't remember what month it is. He's not even sure why it bothers him so much. Not that birthdays mean anything within the walls of the program.
He stops in the middle of the living room and looks around with a meticulous eye. He's already checked the beds, desk, and nightstands...hah.
“Hey have any of you seen my calendar?”
Vortex, sitting on top of the bunk bed shakes the ash off his cigarette right down into Blast Off's lap.
“Nope.”
“TEX YOU'RE LITTERING ON MY BED.”
“I could have ..torn it up” offers Brawl from across the room.
Swindle turns on his heels and angrily rests his arms at his sides.
“You tore it?”
“I might have,” Brawl scratches the back of his head.
Swindle pinches the bridge of his nose
That's fine. Not that he cares that much. Not that any celebration at all would save the crappy day.
He has some new “experimental” medical procedure scheduled for later, which generally means suffering. Or if he's lucky, some critter will attack the city and instead of squirming on the slab, he'll have to go cuddle with huge nasty beasts. Which is slightly better than the actual procedures. He'd like that to happen. If only his head would also stop buzzing....
“Happy birthday to me” Swindle thinks, sticking his Mech hand under the plates of a particularly ugly monster and pulling something disgustingly oozing green blood out of there. He can see the faces of the random gawkers who didn't have time to evacuate. Ooh, some of them got that nasty stuff on their faces. Swindle has no time to feel sorry for them.
The monster did attack, but it's entirely possible that this monster ended the last meager supply of luck Swindle had. Because somewhere. Something. In his head begins to hurt again and the world in front of his eyes begins to slowly blur and..
ahh FUCK….
The monster grabs him knocks him to the ground and Swindle can literally feel in his bones that something's wrong, but the data from his Mech doesn't give him any useful information. Which isn't that uncommon. These things are glitchy as hell and aren't designed to recognize anything but the most basic popular malfunctions.
The word “error” shines mockingly in his face. Blurring in his eyes and reflecting in red on his uniform.
Error, error, what the hell is this error. He needs to know what's wrong so he doesn't accidentally kill himself, but all this bucket offers him is oops. You're in trouble teeheee~
He can hear the sound of Blast Off's giant cannon in the distance. And the loud rumble where Vortex and Onslaught are trying to get out of the ring of monsters.
His Mech is unresponsive. His damn machine refuses to move and Swindle isn't quite sure if it's the Mech that's the problem, because his head feels like a piece of raw rotten meat and maybe the error meant that what's broken is him.
The monster leans over him, trying to rip off whatever it can rip off and thank god this thing apparently isn't smart enough to realize that the Mech is controlled from the head because it's aiming straight for his chest.
He needs to get out. If he can't get this thing to move, he needs to get the fuck out of it before the alien gets him.
He manages to open the emergency hatch and quietly slip out and ohhhh the world is spinning, this is not bloody good.
He manages to take a few steps before a loud B A N G comes from somewhere above and IS THAT A TRAIN???? Who in their right mind would think of using a fucking train as a throwing weapon???? Is that Brawl? It's got to be Brawl. Oh, Swindle is so gonna kill him.
Because (sadly) in addition to the monster, the train and Swindle, there's also physics involved in this circus.
So while the monster is effectively brought to rest and knocked sideways with a hole in it’s head, the train stops its forward motion and starts its downward motion.
Right onto Swindle's head.
He just has time to think that dying from a train falling out of the sky is a pretty creative death. His legs are shaking, his head is buzzing and he only manages to take half a sluggish step in an attempt to avoid the inevitable when a loud “MOVE” comes to his ears and something yanks him to the side.
The tug sends fire down his spine and head. The ensuing landing reverberates with pain in his shoulder and sides. He barely has time to process the first two sensations until a moment later he hears a rumble so deafening that he thinks his eardrums are about to burst.
Swindle props himself up on his elbows and hisses in pain as the movement causes the back of his head to sting.
“Ah I'll fuckin' kill him...”
A voice comes above him
“Ouw dude. You okay?”
There's.. Some teenager hovering over him. And behind him is lying...the wrecked train...right where Swindle himself was standing a second ago.
The strange teen frowns worriedly and pulls Swindle upright and drags him somewhere else
“Come on, it's best not to be in the open during monster attacks”
“Ah” thinks Swindle ”right. Without Mech you're a pathetic tiny piece of chop begging to be stomped on by Brawl.”
He tries to focus on balance so he doesn't hang too much on this kid.
They find the nearest unlocked door, which turns out to be the entrance to an underground bar.
“So” says the stranger, letting go of Swindle and shaking the dust off his hair ” You're a pilot! That's so cool, but you're kinda small for a pilot.”
Swindle sighs sullenly.
“I'll let you have that one comment about my height because you helped me, but next time you're dead.”
“Helped? I saved your ass.”
“Helped a lot” says Swindle grudgingly. “Thanks.”
The teen laughs and climbs into the bar. It's a mess everywhere, people clearly evacuated in a hurry and threw everything in haste.
“What's your name? Oh, or, wait. Do you guys use code names? I've heard pilots call each other by call signs, but half the time those call signs sound so dumb, I don't see how they can respond to that.”
He waits for the kid to cut off his flow of words to take a breath. Man, what a chatty boy.
“You can call me Swindle.”
“Kay” the kid pulls out a couple glasses ”I'm Blurr. Would you like something Swindle? I don't mean to brag, but I'm pretty good at mixing cocktails.”
Swindle looks around the room suspiciously. The bar, even though it's underground, looks pretty good. Too good, in fact. The place is clearly not for the poor.
He walks over to the bar and climbs onto a bar stool. There's no one else in here but them, but the electricity is on so he doesn't doubt for a second that they're being filmed by a security camera right now. Maybe a few even.
Blurr throws him an expectant look.
Swindle pretends to go through his pockets. As if there could be money in them out of nowhere. Then he makes a comically confused face and spreads his hands.
“Oh, no, I think I left my millions at home. What's the cheapest thing you have?”
Blurr snorts.
“Ice is free.”
“I'll take the ice then” nods Swindle.
There is a loud rumbling sound above them. It must be Vortex having fun again bouncing on the aliens that have fallen to the ground, crushing their heads.
Swindle is just. He takes off his helmet, takes a glass of ice and presses it to his head enjoying the way the nasty buzzing recedes.
Blurr waits for the rumbling to recede before speaking again.
“But really. You're a pilot but...uh. Are you even old enough to drink?”
Swindle sends him his best grumpy look. It's not exactly a joke about his height, but it's damn close.
“Are you old enough to pour?”
“Sure,” says Blurr too fast for it to be true. If Swindle had to guess, he'd say the guy in front of him is no older than seventeen. The tattered jeans and the T-shirt with the F1 logo printed on it definitely don't help. And, hey, those headphones look very expensive. So do the sneakers. Kid's clearly from a wealthy family.
Blurr pulls out a bottle of syrup from somewhere and pours it straight into his mouth. Doesn't miss, which is amusing. Doesn't wince, which is frankly impressive. Swindle feels the unbearable sweetness just looking at him.
It suddenly hits him
“Hey, do you have a phone?”
“Sure,” Blurr pours himself more syrup. Swindle twitches.
“What's the day today?”
Blurr's mouth is full of an unimaginable amount of sugar, so he just pulls out his phone and turns its screen toward Swindle and oh...oh. He was wrong about the date. And the month, too. It's not his birthday. His birthday was a week ago...
Does that mean he must be nineteen now? Yeah, that makes him nineteen.
Blurr takes the phone back and slips it into his pocket.
“Your face looks funny.”
“I just realized it's my birthday today,” smiles Swindle.
“Oooooooohh~~~” rejoices Blurr ”Congratulations! It's kind of poetic that you almost died just today. Can you imagine how funny the numbers on your tombstone would have looked.”
Swindle chokes on air.
“That's certainly a very appropriate comment, thank you...”
“Sorry haha said without thinking.” Blurr reaches under the counter again and pulls out a bottle from there “Hey, they have more syrups!”
There's another loud rumble from upstairs.
Blurr presses his head into his shoulders and stares up at the ceiling as if hoping to see something through it.
Swindle puts his elbows and head on the tabletop
“Don't worry, it's just Brawl.”
Blurr doesn't take his eyes off the ceiling
“ You can tell that by the sound of falling concrete?”
Swindle lazily dangles his feet. The chair is high and even the toes of his shoes don't reach the floor.
“Brawl is the loudest. And the heaviest, too. He's always crashing into everything, throwing things and breaking things too. You can hear him a mile away.”
He pauses to listen
“And that kch-ooooooooomm is Blast Off's cannon. It's some super rare experimentally advanced one, so it sounds like something out of a space movie. He couldn't stop bragging about it for half a year when he got it.”
Blurr chuckles and leans his elbows on the counter, relaxing.
“ And this...uh...what's this?”
“That's Vortex, he's our local lunatic. Best not to listen too much to what he does, it's almost always disgusting in ways you would never even consider.”
Blurr makes a disgruntled face and is silent for a couple minutes.
“It's weird hearing you call them by their names. I mean, I kind of always knew Mechs were run by people but you guys are never seen, so most of the time it's just.. Huge robots and huge monsters. You know what I mean. I was actually surprised when I saw you get out of that Mech.”
Swindle just nods. Because, what else is there to add.
“Speaking of Mechs.” continues Blurr, ”That thing's evacuation system sucks. What if you were stunned by the fall? What if something short-circuits and starts a fire???”.
Swindle just clenches the glass in his hands. Feels the cold moisture of condensation dripping down onto his fingers
“Then I'd burn.” he doesn't say
Blurr doesn't seem to notice his glum mood
“Oh, hey. If it's no secret, why did you go into piloting in the first place?”
Because he had no choice? He can't answer that, that information isn't for civilians.
Because he didn't know what he was getting into until it was too late? That's not vague enough either.
Because he was up to his neck in debt and barely into college before a smiling man showed up on his doorstep and offered him good money if he agreed to a couple tests...?
“I had to do it for the people.” Swindle decides to repeat a line of propaganda.
“Ohhhh.... That's...a good reason. The monsters are disgusting, of course. But the reason is cool.”
Swindle just. Holds his glass of melting ice, listens to Blurr's mutterings, and enjoys the peace. This random teenager is not his superior or colleague and has nothing to do with the organization at all. Swindle doesn't have to remember to salute or follow orders or fear being reported to his superiors.
He can just. Be.
Just him and his free ice and his saved for free life.
That's. Sweet.
Blurr's drinking syrup again.
...and a little disgusting.
—————————-
Brawl jumps out of bed, hits his head on a shelf hanging on the wall and drops everything on it onto Blast Off's head
“Swindle!!!” yells Brawl.
“Why are these books sticky???” shrieks Blast Off.
“You don't wanna know~” giggles Vortex.
Swindle sighs.
“You're alive!!!” ignores Blast Off Brawl's complaints. And a second later runs up and pulls Swindle off the floor in a crushing bear hug.
Behind them, Blast Off, with his face wrinkled in disgust, gathers all the dropped books back onto the shelf.
Swindle wheezes pathetically and slaps Brawl's arm with his palm, either to reciprocate the gesture or to beg for mercy
“Br...khaaaaah...Brawl I can't breathh.”
“OH. I'm uh. Here. Wait.”
Brawl puts him back on the floor and runs back to the shelf.
Onslaught, who has peeked into the room, puts a hand on Swindle's shoulder
“You've been gone a long time. Boss said you tried to escape.”
His tone isn't judgmental. And not pressuring. Not even questioning, but Swindle knows Onslaught wants more information. Swindle clutches a piece of napkin with a phone number in his pocket and smiles weakly.
“I've found a...friend? I think?”
Onslaught nods. In a manner that only he knows how to do. Not giving an opinion, not encouraging or condemning. Just taking in the information. Swindle admires him for that.
Behind them, Brawl pulls some piece of paper out from under the books that have just been put away and drops them again
“FUCK!” yells Blast Off. Vortex just starts hooting like a hyena.
“Hey Swindle I found the calendar!” yells Brawl waving the paper.
Swindle frowns in surprise.
“It's a different calendar...”
“I found you a new one.” nods Brawl.
“...Why...is it...it's torn in half?”
“It had stupid flowers drawn on it, so I ripped them off. And I accidentally ripped off more than I needed.”
“Ah,” says Swindle, clutching the calendar, ”That's...Thanks. I forgive you for losing the previous one.”
Behind them, Blast Off is trying to strangle Vortex with a jacket.
------------
Blurr waves his arms happily like a hyperactive windmill.
“Swindle!!!”
Swindle smiles and adjusts his glasses
“Your party can be seen from across city.”
“I know~~” primps Blurr “Are you hungry? There was a snack table around here somewhere.”
“I didn't bring any money.” lies Swindle.
“Hey man, it's a party. Help yourself, it's free.”
“Оh.” Swindle's mood instantly brightens. “All right, then.”
“You look terrible” Blurr decides to share.
Swindle, busy shoveling food into his pockets, nods.
“I've had a rough week. Actually, it'd be cool if you didn't tell anyone you saw me here. I'm kind of not supposed to be here.”
He doesn't elaborate.
Blurr is a civilian. In his mind, a rough week is rude people or an exam or bad weather. Swindle's bad week is strap marks on his wrists and double vision. It's nausea from injections and sleepless nights because Vortex won't stop screaming in his sleep.
Blurr doesn't know that. With him, Swindle can pretend to be somewhat normal.
-----------
“Heeeeey“ says Blurr ‘I haven't seen you in a long time~"
“That” thinks Swindle ”is a pretty standard phrase for both of them.
Blurr looks older. Taller too. He was taller than Swindle before, but now that difference is starting to look almost comical. He's also flaunting a cast on his arm.
“Did you get hurt?”
“Didn't make a turn at training” waves Blurr off “It's no big deal. Wanna go find something to eat?”
Blurr is always trying to feed him, Swindle notices over time. Offers him drinks or snacks or whatever.
“ I like your uh..cap?”
“I got a promotion” Swindle smiles proudly “Me and the guys were made a special group...actually you're not allowed to know more than that, so you'll have to take my word for it when I say we are officially cool.”
He purposely adjusts his cap by the brim so Blurr can get a good look at it.
Blurr makes a delighted sound. Something between a “wow” and a giggle. He generally makes a lot of sounds all the time. Tapping his fingers on every hard surface, stomping in place like he's always late for something, laughing, whistling, clicking his tongue. A human orchestra.
__________
Onslaught sits down next to Swindle and clutches his hands in his lap in front of him. This makes the bed legs squeak pitifully. Onslaught has grown surprisingly large. He can almost rival Brawl in height already. Most people find that intimidating, but Swindle just thinks Onslaught is like a wall. A big, solid concrete wall that's so good to hide behind.
“Be careful with what you tell this guy.”
“Don't worry” says Swindle ”He's not the type of friend you tell secrets to. He's just a fun dude who's great to hang out with.”
Onslaught hums.
“And who feeds you for free.”
“If that's how you're trying to ask me to share, you're not doing a very good job.”
Vortex snaps his fingers as he walks past them
“Hey Swindler, the lab is closed for today. It's your day off.”
“Wha...”
Onslaught tilts his head.
“Vortex. What did you do?”
“I spat in their dna sample vault” proudly proclaims Vortex “and didn't tell them exactly where.”
-----———————-
Blurr frowns.
“Hey...are you okay?”
“No” thinks Swindle.
“My friend died” he says instead.
He's not okay. He feels like an animal caught in a beartrap, trying to chew off its own paw to get free.
Except the trap is closed around Swindle's head and it's not a body part he can afford to lose.
There's been a lot of talk. Even more rumors. Swindle listened but tried not to believe.
And then one of pilots, Shockwave… was taken to the lab and brought back a different damn man and it felt like Swindle had the rug pulled out from under his feet with hot coals underneath.
Because Swindle's boss, with his stupid, rehearsed smile, started writing reports about how “human personality flaws are something that can be fixed. That challenging behavior is something that can be repaired with tools.
Blurr freezes.
“Who?”
“Vortex.”
Because of course it's Vortex. Talented but difficult to handle. Powerful but uncontrollable.
They wanted a pilot who would be a beast on the battlefield and a loyal dog on base. And who else would be a more ideal test subject than him?
Vortex was being very rude that day, even by Vortex standards. Yelling and swearing and throwing things around. Kept saying that no shitty lab could make him “a fucking puppet.”
Scratching the stitches on his head until he started leaving a trail of blood behind him.
He went on a mission.
And never came back.
The reports said it was all the monsters' fault. That Vortex was unstable. That the accident had nothing to do with the new technology. But it was nevertheless suspended.
Swindle is both bitter and amused by this. Vortex would eat the same monsters for breakfast any other day. The bastard was unkillable.
“Oh my god” says Blurr “I'm so sorry to hear that.”
He says something else. Probably comforting. About how Vortex died protecting people, maybe. About Vortex being a hero.
“Vortex,” thinks Swindle, ”loved life. He loved adrenaline and danger and pain and thrill and fear, but he never wanted to die. They did something to him. Something that made him go over the edge.”
Vortex got his head in the trap and ripped it off to escape it.
Swindle knows him and the others are next. And knows that no one but themselves can help them.
---------------------------
Blast Off seems...very quiet. He could never stop complaining about Vortex before. Yelling about the garbage. Resenting the unmade bed and the cigarette ashes.
Vortex's bed remains unmade.
Blast Off regularly cleans everything up, but never wipes away the little circles of ash from the places where Vortex used to put out cigarettes on the furniture.
Onslaught puts his hand on Swindle's shoulder and squeezes. Not hard. Just enough for Swindle to register the gesture as important.
Standing nearby, Blast Off lights a cigarette and leans on Onslaught.
“Ons told me about your plan. I want to join in.”
“What kind of plan? Can I get involved?” inquires Brawl.
Onslaught sighs.
“Repeat after me - I don't know, they don't tell me anything.”
“I don't know, they don't tell me anything.”
“Good job” nods Onslaught “From now on, every time they ask you any - listen. Any! Question about us, you will answer them with this phrase.”
“Got it,” grins Brawl.
Swindle smiles.
“Gentlemen, it's time to violate all that is written, and rewrite all that is violated.”

Blurr lazily takes his eyes off the phone. He's wearing a racing suit and tons of hairspray. He's shiny and gleaming like a fine collectible figurine that should be on the shelf of an expensive exhibit. He's also bored.
“Sorry buddy, the interview is long over, if you have any questions you'll have to pay for the session.”
Swindle smiles.
“How about one tiny little question?”
Blurr makes funny big eyes.
“SWINDLE!!! I haven't seen you in a thousand years! You...oh I didn't recognize you haha sorry. Nice coat. You quit being a pilot?”
Swindle proudly adjusts his glasses. He's wearing a brand-new, ironed shirt that's exactly his size. Nice neat tie, expensive coat. Swindle isn't surprised Blurr didn't recognize him immediately. Sometimes he looks in the mirror and doesn't recognize himself. After all those years of wearing the pilot's uniform, he felt almost attached to it. And yet here he is.
“You could say I moved.” he winks snarkily, “Up. All the Mechs you see on the streets now are my Mechs~”
Blurr completely forgets about his phone.
“REALLY?? Oh man congrats to you!”
“Thanks” nods Swindle ”You want something to drink? I'm buying.”
———————-
Onslaught adjusts his tie. It's still, years later, a little strange to see him in a uniform instead of a pilot's suit.
“You do realize it's going to be hard to find a person like that, right? We need someone famous enough to be effective and dumb enough to want to save mankind instead of sunbathing on a yacht.”
Swindle adjusts his glasses and leans back in his chair.
Someone outgoing so they can quickly befriend all the right people. Handsome enough to have their face printed on a poster. Smart just enough not to say too much. And not associated with Mecha program so they can't be accused of trying to get promoted through their acquaintances.
Someone who already has everything but still willing to put themselves at risk for the cause.
“You know, I think I have a possible candidate.”
