Chris' Surfing Lessons
In “Ocean’s 9-1–1” Shannon talks to Eddie about surfing lessons. She’s hesitant about Eddie’s providing Chris with surfing lessons because of their expense.
Due to that, it's unlikely that Eddie or Shannon introduced the idea of surfing lessons to Chris.
More likely, Chris told Eddie that he wanted surfing lessons, and Eddie would do anything to make it possible for his son.
But where did Chris get the idea?
Buck spends a lot of time with Chris, and no doubt tells Chris many stories about his past -- including how he learned to surf at Virginia Beach after leaving home.
Chris, wanting to emulate Buck, wants to learn to surf.
Which is why Chris draws a surfboard between him and Buck on the card for Buck’s welcome back party after the bombing.
Then the skills Chris learned during his surfing lessons -- because even if Chris learned to swim in Texas, there was no waves and ocean current, which greatly changes a swimmer's expertise and abilities -- helped Chris stay alive when he was with Buck in the tsunami.
Through some six degrees of separation, Buck gave Chris the ability to survive the tsunami, along with saving him throughout that day.

i know that it's because they need Somebody for eddie to bounce off of to instigate his decisions to move forward with chris bc he wouldn't do it himself but it's still SO crazy that buck buckley is somehow haunting the diaz family's narrative from 800 miles away. like helena and ramon don't realize that their shit doesn't work now because of a bisexual white man who's their son's guiding light and their grandson's other greatest influence and has both of their backs no matter what!!!!!!

No, but it's so important for buddie's development that Buck doesn't find Christopher. Eddie would never blame Buck anyway, but to force both of them into that moment where they think Christopher is gone is SO IMPORTANT. If Buck had found Christopher before Eddie found both of them, you lose the moment that's about Buck and Eddie and loss and with that you miss a key aspect there. If Buck already had Chris, Eddie would only know about it once everything was as fine as it could get, so it wouldn't test the strength of what they have going, same with if Buck never lost Chris to begin with. That moment where it feels like everything failed adds so much. Buck found a piece of himself with the tsunami and his relationship with Chris, but without losing Chris he wouldn't have found that piece of his relationship with Eddie. Both of them have a moment where for a minute they have to accept they lost their kid, and it was a natural disaster and Eddie dragged Buck out of bed and no one is really to blame because no one could've seen it coming and Buck is hurt and exhausted and only still standing because Chris is nowhere to be found and he needs to find this kid and he needs to somehow find the strength to tell his partner that he lost the person both of them love the most and Eddie doesn't blame Buck for a second. Buck is trying to say the words even though both of them know what it means that Buck is alone but the fact that they have that moment strengthens what they have. No one would've blamed Eddie if he reacted badly, Shannon died months before and for a minute he thinks Chris is dead too, but he doesn't. And after that it also shows how much faith he has on Buck because he takes all of that as proof that he's right to trust him because Buck will bleed himself dry for Chris and what else can he ask of anyone that steps into their life.
#they could've made buck find chris before eddie finds them#but that would lessen the moment eddie finds them because Buck would be the hero#both of them feeling the hit of losing Chris together builds them up#ugh#i LOVE THEM SO FUCKING MUCH#911#buddie#buddie thoughts#anna watches 911

Hypothetically speaking, if you were part of the team who worked on "Wish" (or any other Disney animated films that you consider as bad), what are the major changes you would make?
Hey, this is my favorite question so far! 😀 I’ll make a post about it and tag you. But bare bones, for Wish?
Change the Main Idea of the Movie from “Keep wishing; you’re powerful enough to make it come true.” to “Have faith, and you’ll get more than what you wished for.”
Then, because the Main Idea’s been changed, every character needs to change so that they support the new main idea. 🤷♀️ (You should always make characters that support a main idea, instead of trying to wedge characters you “like” under main ideas they don’t actually support.)
Get rid of the idea of tangible wish-bubbles. Wishes are intangible, like fears and affection and a feeling of hope.

Make the stars an otherworldly kingdom, where fairies and magic come from. (But keep it vague, so that it can still be associated with Neverland and Evangeline somewhere in the future.) What’s not vague is that the each star is a powerful being, but some are younger and less tested than others. The younger ones are messengers. The Kingdom of the Stars is ruled by the Council of the Stars; maybe the sun, the moon, something like that. The Kingdom of the Stars watches from above and chronicles the stories of mortals, and sometimes, when mankind needs it, they lend a magical hand that changes everything for the better.
Change the culture of Rosas to…an actual culture instead of a bunch of people standing around in a harbor castle. Make the whole kingdom a kingdom of inventors and explorers who used to have an alliance with the Kingdom of the Stars—their inventions would be magically blessed, and they’d be told where those inventions were needed most—but now they invent nothing and hide from the world and the stars because of a great betrayal and siege that destroyed their first home.
Change Magnifico so that he’s obsessed with keeping Rosas hidden and under control, because he believes their old ways, ( making inventions and the “meddling” of the Kingdom of the Stars) only brings attention from dangerous, greedy people. But on the outside, he hides his control-freakishness with a protective fatherly-like persona.
Change Amaya so that she agrees with some of Magnifico’s worldview: she thinks that their inventions will bring attention from dangerous, greedy people, but she doesn’t believe that the stars would meddle. She thinks they’re totally unhelpful and distant. She actually wants dangerous people to try and find them, so she can get her revenge—she’s been hoarding magical inventions and learning how to control them.
Change Asha’s whole family: her dad believed that the kingdom shouldn’t hide, then got sick and died. Her mom believes that even though the kingdom is in hiding, Asha would be happier if she found a way to do more than her current job. Her grandfather is basically a rebel and wants Rosas to go back to the way it was, and he’s always trying to get Asha to believe in the stars, or look at old inventions and spell books they’re not allowed to use anymore. Basically, the whole family wanted more for Asha than living in a hidden kingdom.
Change Asha: She’s not an adorkable, vaguely good shallow character. She’s more like if you took Rapunzel’s excitement about the world and buried that under layers of hopelessness after her dad died. Now she’s like the young teenage girl version of Nick Wilde from Zootopia. She no longer believes that her dreams can come true, or that the Kingdom of the Stars has any part in her life. That Rapunzel-excitement part of her is still there, deep down, and the movie is about how it gets brought back to the surface.
Change Valentino: I’d make Valentino 100% reckless, leap-first, look-later. He’s a baby goat, the only one Asha’s family was allowed to keep from their herd when they moved out of their cottage, and therefore Asha is very overprotective of him. He’s basically a manic ball of energy who gets into everything—like she used to be, as a little girl before her dad died. Valentino has zero fear and nothing but wonder and fun in his eyes.
Change Star: yeah everyone’s doing this but I think Star should’ve been kept as a person, with the ability to talk. Not because I’m sold on the idea of him being Asha’s love interest—but because I think a character who has lost her faith in magical, benevolent stars needs to have a personal relationship with one that actually cares about her, and proves it. Plus it’s about 1000 times more interesting. So he's one of those young stars I mentioned: supposed to be just a messenger, but once he gets down to Rosas, there's something keeping him from getting back up to the heavens—and he doesn't want to leave anyway, because he's convinced he's supposed to be helping Asha.
A more in-depth post coming soon! Might even have a little art.

Collision
TW/CW: Car accident, injuries.
Pairing: Evan Buckley x Diaz!Reader
You smiled to yourself as you walked beside Christopher, your nephew. You had watched him in the morning while your brother was working, and Carla was attending an appointment. You didn’t mind though, you absolutely adored him, and he enjoyed spending time with you.
You had an hour to kill before dropping him off to Carla, and heading off to work yourself, so you decided to swing by the station to have lunch with the team. It was quiet when you arrived, indicating the team were on a call. You took it upon yourself to make lunch for everybody, knowing it would be a relief to them when they got back. Chris was sat at the table on his tablet, in a world of his own, allowing you to focus on the food. You couldn’t help but smile to yourself as the sound of the shutters opening filled the station followed by heavy boots thudding against the floor as each firefighter jumped out of the truck. The footsteps got closer, the faint smell of smoke mixed with a familiar aftershave filled your nostrils and you instinctively lean back into the body that is now behind you as arms snake around your waist. “Isn’t this a nice surprise?”
You turn towards the voice, and smile, “Apparently, I can’t seem to stay away.” You lean up to kiss Buck, causing Chris to pull a disgusted face. This seemed to amuse Buck, and he kissed you again. Eddie appeared in the kitchen, and made his way over to his son, visibly happy to see him. “Come on guys, get a room.” You rolled your eyes playfully at your brothers comment, and pulled away from Buck.
You dished up the food for the team and took a seat, eager to hear about the call they had just been on. You listened intently as you ate, your complete focus on Buck as he spoke passionately about the call. Your heart warmed as you watched his face light up, he loved how much you genuinely enjoyed hearing about the calls, and how his day had gone. Chimney was the next to speak up, “It was a good call, except the part where Buck was playing hero and nearly got himself killed.” Bucks eyes widened and he turned to look at Chimney, giving him a look that immediately stopped him talking. Chimney, trying to help, began speaking again, “Don’t worry, it’s nothing out of the ordinary. It wasn’t any more dangerous than a simple call, the risk is always there. Besides, it was probably one of the safer times Buck tried to save the day, you should’ve seen him on the call last week.”
“Chim, stop talking.” Buck, who was now visibly on the spot, turned to face you. He studied your face, working out how to approach this. He opened his mouth to reassure you, but you beat him to it, “I thought we spoke about this…” Buck knew you understood that no day was guaranteed, and that saving people on calls was something he would always try to do, even if it put him at risk. He also knew that he had a habit of jumping the gun and putting himself in dangerous situations without thinking it through. “I’m sorry…”
You checked your watch, and stood up. “I just wish you’d be more careful, Buck.” Chris stood up and hugged Eddie goodbye, and you did the same. “Later bro.” You said goodbye to the team and walked back to the car with Chris by your side. The breeze hit you, and you took a deep breath. Maybe you were overreacting, maybe not but you just needed a moment. You helped Chris into the car and got in yourself, turning on the radio. The short ride to Carlas mostly consisted of Chris laughing as you sang along to the music, and the occasional conversation when Chris wasn’t overly engrossed in his phone. Carla was there to greet you when you pulled up on her drive, Chris was extremely excited and practically jumped out of the car to hug her. Carla gave you a hug, “Y/N, it’s so good to see you!” You smiled and hugged back, “It’s been a while, huh? Life has been hectic.” Carla laughs at this, “You’re telling me, your brother told me all about you and Buck. Moving in together? That’s a big step!”
“We were practically living together anyway, and if I’m being honest, Eddie is probably just relieved to have his couch back. I was starting to get on his nerves.” You explained to Carla, and she chuckled. “Well, I wish you all the best. I’m gonna get Chris inside, and I’ll let you run off to work. It was lovely seeing you.” You hug Chris goodbye and bid farewell to Carla before getting into your car and beginning your journey to your place of work. In front of you, the amber light turned to red and you stopped. You could see that traffic was beginning to build up on the other side of the junction, and you didn’t want to be late. You sighed, and made the decision to take an alternate route, so when the light turned green, you indicated and pulled out to begin taking your turning. You let out a sudden gasp before you could even properly register the car coming towards you. All you could do was attempt to brace for the impact, and so you did.
A loud crunching sound surrounded you, followed by the feeling of being thrown as your car was barrelled into. You closed your eyes tightly, scared of what was next. You didn’t have the courage to open them again until the car steadied. The first thing you could see was the airbag in front of you, despite not feeling it deploy moments before. You could smell the burning of the tyres, outside of the car, you could hear the panicked voices of bystanders, but all you could focus on was the blood that was now spread across your arms, unsure of where it was actually coming from. You weren’t in pain, at least you couldn’t feel any in that moment. Is that what shock feels like? You couldn’t think, but your eyes got heavy and you fought your hardest not to succumb to the darkness.
Back at the station, the call was only just coming in. The alarm blared throughout the station, alerting the team to the call. They were quick to jump into action, grabbing their gear and piling themselves into their assigned trucks. Eddie and Buck sat beside each other, speaking casually between themselves about what had happened earlier. “Just give her some time, she’ll come around. For her, two of the people she loves most are at risk everyday, you’ve gotta imagine it can’t be easy. It’s a risky job as it is, and when you put yourself into riskier situations without needing to, it decreases the chance of making it home at the end. She’s scared. Just talk to her.” Eddie attempted to reassure Buck, who was feeling terrible. He couldn’t shake the image of your face from his mind, the face that showed disappointment in his actions. Before Buck could respond, the truck halted and the team jumped out, ready to give help where needed. Buck stopped in his tracks as an all too familiar car was crushed before him. He tried not to panic, hoping that his suspicions were wrong. His eyes flicked to the number plate and his heart stopped. His feet were moving before his mind could catch up. He shouted your name, drawing Eddies attention. It took Eddie a few seconds to process what was happening. You had not long left the station, it couldn’t possibly be you. Right?
Buck arrived to your car first, nausea washed over him as he caught sight of your injured body. “Y/N? Hey, it’s me. I’m here.” You weren’t completely aware of what was happening, your eyes opened with a struggle. Your movements were weak as you turned your head to look at him. “Buck?” You spoke quietly, not completely aware of the situation at hand. “Don’t move, try and keep still.” He tried to remain as calm as he could, he didn’t want to scare you any more, he was terrified himself. Eddie ran right over to the car, his heart racing as he feared what he would find. His first instinct was to check the back seat, relief finally washing over him as he saw no sign of Christopher. Still, he needed to make sure, “Y/N, was Chris in the car?”
You shook your head, “Carlas.” Eddie felt a weight off his shoulders, knowing his son was safe. The weight soon came back when he saw the condition you were in. Your eyes rolled back, and you fell into unconsciousness. Bobby was running the scene, assigning Hen and Chim to medically assist you, and he grabbed the gear to support Buck and Eddie in freeing you from the car. Buck didn’t want to let go of your hand, but he knew he had to in order to get you out sooner. The team worked tirelessly, ensuring to be as careful as possible. Bobby handed the halligan to Buck, “Buck, you focus on getting the doors open. Diaz, grab the saw and be on standby.”
Buck groaned as he tried to pry the doors open, with no results, “Roofs too dented Cap, I can’t get it open.” Bobby nodded, and turned to Eddie, “Saws it is. Get in there Diaz, Buck, you too.” The roof was off in no time, Hen and Chim jumped straight in and equipped you with a neck brace, and got the back board in place to move you. Hen checked your vitals quickly, trying to make sure you were steady enough to be moved. “I’ve got a faint pulse, we gotta move.” They moved you out of you car quickly, and transferred you to the ambulance. “Trauma to the abdomen, possible internal bleeding. I’ll let the hospital know we’re en route.” Buck jumps into the back of the ambulance with Chimney, and instantly takes your hand in his. Hen places herself into the drivers seat, putting the ambulance into 911 mode and begins the journey as fast as she can to the nearest hospital.
Buck hated seeing you like this. He was filled with anxiety, the nausea constantly there as he studied your visible injuries. His heart sank with every second that went by, the more he thought about you laying there almost lifeless, expecting you to flatline any second now. “I’m sorry baby, we can’t leave things like this. I need you to get through this so I can apologise to you. I know I’m not the easiest person to love, and I also know that I’m the biggest pain in the ass, but I love you, and I need you. Please.” Buck sobbed as he held your hand tighter. Time seemed to be going extremely slow for Buck, yet moments later Hen was pulling up at the hospital. You were rushed in, Hen spewed all your information to the nurses as you were wheeled in and handed over. Buck, Hen and Chimney stood there as you were wheeled out of sight. One of the nurses stopped Buck from running after you, and he sat defeated in the waiting room. The rest of the team arrived soon after, Eddies face was similar to Bucks. Eddie spoke first, “Any update?” The lack of response from Buck had him on edge, fearing the worst. Luckily, Chimney filled the silence. “There’s no update, but no news it almost always good news.”
Eddie placed his hand on Bucks shoulder, giving it a reassuring squeeze before sitting down next to him. “How’re you holding up?” Buck didn’t look up, instead he kept his head in his hands. He couldn’t respond, he couldn’t trust his voice not to give out. His leg bounced anxiously, and despite not talking, his feelings were painfully obvious. Eddie could empathise, he knew exactly what was going through Bucks mind. It was happening to him too, but he concealed it as much as he could, knowing Buck needed him. “You know, each time we’re sat in these chairs, it never gets easier. You don’t have to talk, I get it. I think you should know that I’m right here for you, I understand. Y/N is going to be okay, that I have no doubt about. She’s my sister, and us Diaz’s, we don’t back down. We fight.” Eddie continues talking, and he’s not sure whether he’s trying to convince Buck or himself.
A few hours go by, and the team are waiting as patiently as they can for an update. Maddie had arrived some time ago, and was sat with Buck. She was not only there to support her brother, but also her brothers girlfriend, who Maddie had claimed as her best friend shortly after meeting her. Bobby hands a coffee to Buck and Eddie, who hadn’t moved from their seats since arriving. This changed moments later as a nurse approached, making them stand. Buck felt as if his legs were going to give way any second. The nurse cleared her throat, “She’s stable. She’s incredibly lucky to have made it out with the injuries she did, it could’ve been a lot worse. She’s awake, if you’d like to go see her.”
Buck didn’t stick around to hear whatever else the nurse had to say, he darted through the corridor until he got to your room. He stopped to take a deep breath, and stepped inside. He was scared to look at you, all he could picture was you covered in blood still. His head shot up as he heard a voice, your voice to be exact, “Buck?”
He was by your bedside in a blink of an eye, taking your hand in his. His eyes wandered over your body, taking in each of your injuries. His heart broke a little more with each one. He finally looked you in the eyes, and that’s when it hit him. His eyes filled up with tears, “Y/N…”
“Hey, don’t cry. I’m fine, see. I’m right here.” You gave his hand a squeeze, trying to give him the reassurance he needed. Buck took a seat close to your bed, your hand in his and against his lips. You move your hand up to his cheek and wipe his tears, Buck practically melted into your touch. “I really thought I had lost you.”
“I’m right here, I’m not going anywhere. I need to apologise for my reaction earlier, that could’ve been our last conversation earlier and left without saying goodbye, or telling you how much I love you.”
Buck shook his head, “You have nothing to apologise for, I’m the one that owes you an apology. I’m sorry that I’m not more careful when I’m out on a call, I shouldn’t be that reckless. I’m sorry that I can’t promise to walk through that door every night, safe and unscathed. I can appreciate how you feel now, and I promise I’ll try my hardest to be more careful. I love you, and I don’t want you ever feeling anything close to what I’ve felt today.” You wince as you sit up, making Buck panic. You push through the pain, and pull Buck to you. “Come here.” He stands from his chair and leans down to kiss you quickly. He carefully moves your hair from your face, ensuring he doesn’t touch any of your cuts or bruises.
“I love you too, and even though I’m petrified that you won’t make it home one day, I trust that you’ll try everything in your power to make sure you do. I’m proud of you, Evan.” As you spoke, Buck smiled to himself. A sense of relief washed over him. Before he could respond, you continued. “So… does this mean I can finally get a new car now?”
Buck chuckled, “You’re a pain in the ass, Diaz.”
“Takes one to know one, Buck.”
A/N: So, I think I rewrote this like 10 times. Its been a while since I've done any writing, so please bare with me while I figure out my writing style again. Any criticism is welcome, I appreciate the feedback.

He's drunk when he sends it. Pissed because Buck won't just let this die. Tired of seeing his name flash across his screen, texts full of anger and sadness and hurt.
I suspect you've already met your last and it's not me he sends, and then turns off his phone and reaches for the bottle of whiskey on his top shelf.
---
If he'd been sober he would have known better. It's not even like it's been a pervasive thought - just an inkling at the start of things that seemed to be completely off base once he got to know everyone better, but looking back... He can see it. The built in life. The steadfast support. The knowledge that they'd always, always have each other's back. The kid who hero worshipped him.
The thing is he's fielding texts from Eddie, too, checking in and then circling around to being so goddamn judgmental that it's like they've coordinated their attacks to give Tommy no room to breathe.
He ended it to save himself from slipping so far under the surface he wouldn't make it back.
The fact that he's lost them both to his own fear is icing on the cake for the demon on his shoulder that keeps trying to remind him that once upon a time he'd fully thought Eddie and Buck were amicable exes.
---
He has to blink to figure out who's standing on his doorstep. The mustache is gone.
"If you meant who I think you mean, you're dumber than you look," Eddie says, and shoulders past Tommy before Tommy can even muster an affronted expression.
Tommy wanders after Eddie into his own kitchen, immediately annoyed that he looks more at home there than Tommy has felt in weeks. He'd gotten used to the loft - the space, the echoes, the lights of the city. The smell of his own aftershave on Buck's pillow.
They never spent much time here. The loft was closer - to Harbor, to the 118, to all the things in the city that tempted them out for a night. And staying at the loft meant he wouldn't have the echoes of Buck in every room, around every corner. (The echoes are in him, instead, and he still feels the absence like a lanced wound.) Tommy has always been good at making other people think he's good at putting distance between himself and them.
Eddie digs in a drawer, pulls out the bottle opener shaped like a cow and pops two tops. Holds one out for Tommy and scowls when Tommy wrinkles his nose at the Corona.
"Absolutely screw you if you think I'm driving halfway across town for you just to get the ones you like, right now."
Tommy can't argue that. He takes a drag and swallows. Stares. Is everyone else experiencing whiplash seeing him without the mustache? It looks fine but it'd taken so much fucking work to get used to it and now it's just gone. Clean shaven, an acre of skin he hasn't seen in months.
Tommy blinked and the entire world was different. Tommy freaked and the world changed.
"What are you doing here?"
Eddie's eyebrows both lift, a frank Are You Fucking Serious look on his face that makes Tommy want to take him to the mats and have it out in the garage instead of over beers.
"Buck may be spinning his wheels trying to figure out what the fuck you meant but I know damn well what you were implying."
That seems unlikely. Eddie always seems to be the last person to have a single clue what was going on, with Buck scraping in just before him. It's a tight race.
He used to find it charming.
(He absolutely does not still find it charming, he tells his heart, and wonders if he could hire some tiny asshole gnome to go stomp around in an atrium or two and get it to stop doing what it's doing. Fucking traitor.)
"Do you actually believe that, or is it some dumb excuse because you're terrified of being happy?"
Oh, that's fucking rich.
Tommy opens his mouth to tell him exactly that but Eddie just steamrolls right by him. "You don't have to point out the hypocrisy, jackass. I'm well aware of my own issues. Thing is - you're like, almost right. Buck does make me happy. Next to Chris there's no one else in the world I'd rather have by my side, rain or shine, good or bad. I love him. He's my person."
Tommy rolls his jaw. It's not a vindication to hear it.
"Except I'm not gay, Tommy. And I don't want that. I never have. And neither does Buck, just in case that argument was about to hit the airwaves."
"How do you know?"
Something sparks in the back of Eddie's eyes. Understanding. Triumph.
"You want an itemized list or a demonstration?"
Which is when Tommy knows he's stepped into an absolute minefield. No markers. Just free balling his way through a conversation that could explode with even the slightest pressure.
Eddie's got his phone out.
None of this is ideal.
When he looks up, his eyes land squarely on Tommy, who would like in this moment to be able to curl so far in on himself he gets sucked clean through the other side. "First of all, Buck may have just been improvising his entire journey of sexuality but for once I was trying to get ahead of the curve so that whole starry-eyed newly not straight vision you have of Buck is bullshit. You let him pull you along by the shirt strings for months without pressing pause and then you freak out when he thinks his speed and your speed are the same speed?"
This is feeling a whole lot like an ambush, now.
"Did you ever even try to slow him down?"
Tommy has some choice words that aren't remotely appropriate to say to someone who is at least tangentially still his friend, so he takes another swig of shitty beer. God, this shit is awful.
"You wanna know how I know I'm not his one? How I know he's not mine?"
Tommy really, really doesn't. Honestly he'd like to kick him out.
"Because he went at our friendship at the same warp speed pace he took your relationship and it never fucking scared me."
Proof in the pudding, for Tommy. He's not the sort of jackass who actually thinks he can make a different judgement call on someone else's sexuality than the one they've made themselves, but come on.
"Shannon's been dead for half a decade," Eddie says, voice dropping so suddenly Tommy feels it like an icy draft. "And maybe one day I'll make my peace with that. Maybe one day I'll get out from under it. The point is I've lost them both and the loss wasn't the goddamn same."
"Buck came back," Tommy argues.
Eddie scoffs. Wrinkles his nose. "Jeez, he wasn't kidding about how weird that sounds." His phone buzzes on the countertop, and Tommy wonders what the hell that look on his face means. "Don't change the subject. I'm not here to talk you into anything. I'm just here to drink a beer with you and tell you how goddamn stupid it is to think that an uncertain future with Evan Buckley isn't worth every second of terror it causes you."
"You don't know me as well as you think you do."
Eddie tips the bottle against his lips. Swallows. God, why hadn't Tommy just pursued the self-proclaimed straight guy for a couple weeks before he scratched the itch somewhere else and kept a friend, instead?
"Maybe." Eddie tips his head. "Maybe I do, though. Maybe in the months and months you were invited to all my mopey nights in with Buck and all the crazy crap we end up involved in at the station and all the times you couldn't shut up about him when he wasn't around and all the times I got to see you falling ass over teakettle for my best friend, I learned a fucking thing or two about Tommy Kinard." He wags his head back and forth. "Maybe."
"Is there a point to this?"
Eddie tips his eyes to his phone, and it's probably too late at this point for the suspicion to begin to creep in.
"I mostly just came to confront you about your completely off base bullshit excuses, but there's actually a pretty simple solution to at least one of your multitude of issues, so. Now we're waiting."
Tommy doesn't like the sound of that at all.
"Chris is mad at you, by the way."
It's a distraction. It's fully a - "Why is he mad at me?"
"I should actually thank you, because it's the first time he's actively talked to me in months," Eddie continues, like Tommy hadn't asked a question. "He's pissed because Buck is sad and there's literally nothing in the world that gets a rise out of the Diaz boys like sad Buck."
"You can just say you're pissed at me and go, Eddie."
"Oh I'm angry. Don't think I'm not. Mostly I'm just sad for you. You had six months to get to know Buck and never thought to yourself 'hes going to love me and it's going to hurt' until he skipped too far ahead in the program."
And that's - kind of the final straw. He's let Eddie get his licks in. He deserves it, he knows he does. Honestly it's a little cathartic to hear - to know exactly what Buck has spent his time dissecting post-Tommy. "That's all I ever thought about. Do you think I didn't know going in? I tried to put a stop to it before it even started and he just doubled down! Do you think for a second I wasn't viscously aware that I was setting myself up for -."
No. He's not gonna say it. He's not giving that to Eddie when he couldn't even give it to Ev-Buck. When he couldn't give it to Buck.
Eddie looks victorious anyway.
"And for six months you thought it was worth it."
"For six months I was too much of a coward to stop thinking about it."
Eddie drains the rest of his beer. "I'm not gonna lie. You screwed up pretty bad. Like. Astronomically bad. Giving up your location in a firefight bad."
Tommy does everything he can not to wince.
"It's salvageable, though. If you want it to be. If there's anything I know about Buck it's that second chances are his bread and butter." He's been dancing around saying anything of substance about Buck's feelings, in all of this, but the hints are there. As if the bouts of angry-depressive texts from Buck weren't clue enough.
"And what if it's not what I want?"
Eddie's eyes dart to his phone one more time. "Then you can make it a clean break in about ... three and a half minutes."
Tommy nearly tosses his beer across the room.

homecoming - eddie diaz x reader
Eddie hears her before he sees her.
An adorable voice that comes from several feet away. A voice belonging to a child, a child that was roughly 7 or 8 years old, probably the same age as Christopher.
Eddie had been with the 118 for three months by now. He truly loves the job; it was rewarding and he loved being in service of people. Among their calls though, there were quite a handful of cats getting stuck in trees. Which was why they were currently at a park, Eddie resting a foot behind him against the fire engine, while he watches Buck climb up a ladder to extract the cat. Chim was popping his gum, explaining a new sci-fi flick that just came out to Hen, who to her credit, was doing a great job acting like she cared.
“Are you a firefighter?” The voice had asked. Eddie looks down at the little girl, a girl who looked so very familiar with her hair in two braids and brown doe eyes.
Eddie smiles automatically, and crouches down to be at the same height as the girl. “What gave it away?” He jokes, and he’s met with the sweetest giggle that he swears could cure diseases.
“My mommy said that firefighters are unsung heroes. We actually had one come to the coffee shop that my mommy owns. It’s named after me! I don’t drink coffee though, I’m still too little. I do love the honey banana bread she makes though! That's why my mom calls me bee."
Eddie listens with patience, a soft smile on his face at the little girl’s rambling. Chris does the same thing - gets very enthusiastic and starts over-explaining with run-on sentences. It’s the most endearing quality ever, in Eddie’s opinion.
“Yeah? Do you know where your mommy is now?” Eddie asks.
“Bee, what did we say about you running off without telling me?” A voice asks. Eddie’s eyes follow the voice and is met with an assault on all his senses, including a very clear pang in his chest.
You look even better than you had nine years ago, which Eddie didn’t even think could be possible, since he already thought you were gorgeous when the two of you had dated at 18 years old.
Your face drops when you realize who your daughter was talking to. The boy, or rather the man, who had broken your heart all those years ago. The one who your daughter shared DNA with. The one who didn’t even know he had another child, because you had left Texas for L.A. the second the strip turned pink.
You recover quickly, putting your hands on your daughter’s shoulders. “Hey bee, Milo was asking if you wanted to play go-fish. Can you head over there? Mommy will be just a minute.”
“Okay!” She tells you with a beaming grin. She then turns to Eddie, and says, “I liked talking to you firefighter man! You should come to my mommy’s shop sometime!” With that, she runs over to where your friends and family were.
You internally curse the fact that your daughter was such a social butterfly, before finally meeting Eddie’s eyes. He looks like he was struck by lightning; eyes wide and mouth gaping. He was reeling, and you couldn’t really blame the guy.
“She’s mine.” He says, eventually. It isn’t a question, rather, a simple statement, but you nod anyway. The familiarity that he had seen in the child makes so much sense now, down to the quirk of her smile that you have - but he could also see features of himself in her. The pang in Eddie’s chest was now reduced to a chronic, dull ache at all the years and memories he wasn’t there for. Again.
“I know it’s a lot to ask”, he starts, voice rough but surprisingly steady for someone who just received world-altering news, “but I think Christopher - my son, and I would love to get to know her more. I feel like they’d get along great. Could we all get to know each other?” The words feel wrong a bit, because there was a time where Eddie and you had known each other inside and out. Likes, dislikes, dreams, fears, and life goals - you had practically been an Eddie Diaz encyclopedia.
You’re pensive as you consider his request. You knew this day would come, where you would have to have this conversation with the father of your child. It doesn’t stop the fear gripping your insides, the fear that he would get close to the two of you, and then proceed to leave. It was a fear that was supremely unfair to Eddie, because he didn’t know when he chose to marry Shannon that you had been in the same predicament. And you didn’t know that hours before he was due at the altar, he had stood in front of your then empty house, desperately hoping you would tell him not to marry Shannon.
So with a rapidly beating heart, you smile softly. “Yeah. Yeah, let’s get to know each other.”

it's 2019, and eddie's in his kitchen, grabbing snacks while buck and chris color at the dining room table. buck's cast is set up on a chair, resting on pillows, and he said he was comfortable but eddie should check again when he heads back in. over the waxy scribbly sounds of their crayons, eddie hears them talking.
"were you scared?"
"hm? when?"
"when you hurt your leg."
"oh. hah. right." eddie can picture the way buck ducks his head, the self-deprecating grimace on buck's face. he smiles.
someone's stopped coloring. probably chris. when that kid has a question he does not let it go.
"so were you?"
buck makes a non-committal noise, weighing his options. how much of the truth to tell to a child so young, who recently lost his mother? is it better to hide your pain, or to make sure they know pain is okay? is it possible to do both? this one, eddie is still asking himself.
he trusts whatever buck decides to say, but he moves the bags of chips a little slower, trying to catch the words.
"yeah, buddy, i was scared. but your dad was with me, so i knew it would be okay."
oh.
that's sweet of him to say. like, really sweet. and eddie knows, of course he knows, buck is saying that for christopher's benefit, that it very much might not have been okay, whether eddie had been there or not. that eddie hadn't been, at first, and buck had been all alone, crushed and bleeding and on fucking video, jesus christ. that when they got to him, all eddie could do anyway was hold his hand, with a fucking glove on, for fuck's sake.
he doesn't know why it matters that he had to have a glove on. but it does matter, okay, it would've been different if they had been able to touch.
eddie looks at the ceiling, blinking back to the present moment. he tries to tune back in to what they're saying, make sure they haven't noticed he's gone quiet.
"that makes sense." oh, chris. "he's my hero."
"you wanna know a secret?" buck whispers, and eddie can't tell if he means for it to be loud enough for eddie to hear, or if buck just sucks at whispering.
"he's mine, too."
#sorryyyyy sorry the “he has a silver star!” got to me#i wrote this last night drunk#and then realized it was lowkey sad as shit and the vibe was too celebratory for it#911 spoilers#only in the tags but whatever lmao#buddie ficlet

I really want Eddie to have his own two-part solo adventure (like Buck's tsunami arc) so bad. I have absolutely no idea what the disaster would be, but I just really want to see Eddie going through it and being a Big Damn Hero all on his own. He's at rock bottom, his kid isn't talking to him, he thinks he's a failure at everything and has no idea where his life is going - he needs something to remind him of who he is and how capable he is.
I want to see him leading some small rag-tag group of civilians through the fallout of disaster. Because that's the thing about Eddie - not only is he capable, he's a natural leader as well. I can totally see him figuring out which people in his group have which skills and guiding them through different maneuvers, like bandaging wounds, building shelter, etc, etc. And if there are kids in the group, you know Eddie would be both comforting and practical, distracting them by giving them small tasks. Maybe he admits what he's going through with Christopher to one of them and that kid confirms that, no, Chris is lucky to have Eddie as a dad, even if he's angry now. And Eddie should keep fighting to bring him home (like he's fighting to bring this group of civilians home).
There's been a lot of unfair criticism of Eddie recently and so I think the show needs to remind, not just Eddie, but also the general audience, of exactly who Eddie is and what skills and experiences he brings to the 118. Plus, lbr, Tim owes Ryan Guzman something juicy after that mess of a Vertigo plot in the back of s7.
Of course, as a bonus, we'd get Buck freaking out while Eddie was lost/presumed dead. But I would really want the focus to be on Eddie learning to trust himself again and thriving under pressure. Back in s3, Buck was lost, afraid that he would never be a firefighter again. The tsunami gave him back his confidence and put him in the right frame of mind to fight for his job. Now, Eddie needs something similar if he's going to fight for Christopher and fight to untangle his own issues. He needs to start the journey from a place of confidence in order to make it to the end, and I think a solo presumed-dead arc could give him that.
(Plus, lbr, BAMF Eddie is never something I'll pass up).

People have very rightly pointed out Bobby and Chimney and Buck for being dismissive and aggressive with each other in the past as well. Maybe because it is so recent, but the difference, imo, is that this is certainly not the first time Eddie has minimized and ridiculed Buck in this way. I’m sorry, but this is starting to look like a repeated behavior for Eddie which comes off as manipulative and as gaslighting.
I don’t care who the character is or what the show is, I’m not a fan of when people say they were triggered by something and then others posting “well let’s not say the actions are abusive” — people can bring whatever interpretation they have to a scene. You (general you) might not agree with it but dismissing people’s experiences bc they don’t have “nuance” feels bad to me.
And I think the real issue is with the writing. This repeated behavior from Eddie is not being fully addressed as hurtful to Buck in the show which has presented these two AS BEST FRIENDS. This isn’t a story about a toxic/complicated relationship, this is a story about friends. Eddie is not learning from these situations. He’s not listening to Buck. And yes, that can also be said of other past incidents with Bobby and Chimney and Buck but the fact that it keeps happening with Eddie is an issue that can’t be said about the other incidents.
Anyway sorry for rambling in your inbox! Feel free to ignore! ❤️
I agree. And I hate that when people say this, like you have, others are quick to say we're racist or we're excusing the others.
But, we're not. Those incidents with Chim and Bobby were bad. I hate that they happened.
The difference, as you pointed out Annie, is the PATTERN and the CYCLE of abuse (not technically physical) towards Buck.
This always happens with Buck and Eddie. There's an issue, followed by tension, followed by an outburst, followed by gaslighting.
One scene between Eddie and Buck that I hardly ever see discussed is in season 3 after the lawsuit arc when they make up after Buck returns to the 118.
"Did you ever stop for a minute and think what that would do to us?"
Uhm... Buck was losing his found family.
"Lot of 'I's' in there."
I'm sorry, did you get a firetruck crushing your leg to smithereens while innocenly riding in a firetruck, thus potentially ruining your career?
"I forgive you. That's also what it means to be part of a team."
Thanks for letting him know you're obligated to forgive him.
The really crazy thing imo is that this whole exchange comes AFTER the fucking tsunami arc. Once again, no one is thinking about what Buck went through.
He went toe to toe with a fucking Natural Disaster, saved a handful of people, saved Chris, lost Chris, searched for Chris for HOURS. The entire time he was on blood thinners. And yes, I understand that he had a pulmonary embolism before that and quit his job, but I understand the frustration from Buck. He just did some Superman hero shit and they still won't let him come back to work??
Sorry... went off on a rant there.
Anyway, the Bobby and Chim incidents were isolated to show that either something was very wrong (Bobby) or that the character is cracking (Chim).
These events with Eddie have never been used to show that something is up or about to happen to the GA. In fact, at this point, if you asked the GA about Eddie, don't be shocked if they tell you that he needs therapy or even anger management.
Personally the reason I'm so irked at this continuation of behavior is not only because of fandom reactions but also because I really thought we were passed this with Eddie. The Texas arc made it seem, to me, that Eddie was more relaxed and happy. Something the character 100% deserves... but then something traumatic happens and suddenly we're back to square one.
It's tiresome, boring, and a huge concern if not addressed.
Also, thank you for this:
I don’t care who the character is or what the show is, I’m not a fan of when people say they were triggered by something and then others posting “well let’s not say the actions are abusive” — people can bring whatever interpretation they have to a scene. You (general you) might not agree with it but dismissing people’s experiences bc they don’t have “nuance” feels bad to me.
This this this this thisssss
This is the main problem with this fandom. People are so quick to dismiss other people's, REAL PEOPLE'S, feelings.
Your trauma is valid and you shouldn't have to log on to a platform that once brought you joy only to be told that your experience doesn't matter because xyz.
It's shocking to me that they act this way ESPECIALLY when they are quick to jump into inboxes (mine specifically) and be pissed about a phrase I use because it's allegedly 'racist' and 'if we tell you it's not okay, you should respect that!'
Exactly. Take your own advice, BoBs, and realize that just because you think everything spells closeted love for Eddie Diaz, that may not be the same for others.
I apologize. This went really off the rails lol

My wish list/predictions for the final 2 episodes of 911 s8:
We end the season without a new captain at the 118 because Hen still isn't sure she wants the seat. (S9 should start with Hen as captain though).
Athena starts to wonder what she's doing with the rest of her life without Bobby. Maybe career change? Maybe retirement?
Bobby's alive (yes I am an alobby truther, what of it) and the audience finds out he's alive at the end of 817 and the team finds out in 818. Maybe there's a cliffhanger where the team doesn't know Bobby is alive at the end of the season, but I think it would be really nice to end the season with them all finding out/reuniting.
There's at least one moment where the audience goes "Oh" about Buddie. I hope they don't do unrequited, even if it's not actually unrequited. It would be fun to end the season with a soft Buddie moment, maybe Eddie and Chris settling back into the house with Buck and the audience realizes it's a true will they/won't they situation.
Hen and Karen officially adopt Mara. They've been on the journey to add to their family for like 5 seasons at this point, it's fine they get to make it official.
Madney baby is born (bonus points if the baby is born during a montage of Henren adopting Mara, Eddie and Chris moving home, and Athena and Bobby (who is alive) reuniting.
Ravi gets a big hero moment (he deserves it!!!)
I think the season will end with at least 2-3 loose ends. The show is best when it ends with some loose ends that get tied up in the opening few episodes of the next season and I hope we get that energy back for the end of s8 and start of s9.
