Car
Jake lockey x reader
Word count:- 260
30 days writing challenge
You always wanted a car, it was as if you worked hard to get your hands on your first ever car. An absolutely gorgeous white mercedes. You could stare at it all your life. And that's why you feared of driving it, you wanted a pair of good hands to do so. So you looked for drivers, and you could trust none but, Jake lockey. And not just for his driving skills but.... you admitted to yourself having a fucking crush on him.
Damn this man is gorgeous and hot. You just felt proud he'd open doors for you, call you señorita, and what not.
"are we ready señorita?" he asked you popping your thought bubble.
"oh yes" you answered as he drove away with you.
"jake?" you called him from the backseat.
"hmm?" he humed in response.
"well, I was thinking, I should let you know.." you paused and then continued, "you drive really well."
"ofcourse" he replied, "that's why you hired me, your friend's house senorita".
You got down as soon as he opened the door for you, but before you entered you enquired,
"you know what you drive well?" this question seemed unnecessary to jake so he shrugged and said, "the car?"
You shook your head and answered with a quick glance at him, "me, you drive me crazy."
And yes, he stood holding the door not knowing what to reply, and you smirked, cruelly, seeing him like that, helpless, seemed exciting to you. So you ordered.
"park the car, I'll be back in three hours."

Girls Like You
A/N: I’m on a roll with Bucky as a daddy - @ruckystarnes let me join in her 2K challenge (congrats AND thank you!) with the prompt “Girls Like You” by Maroon 5, which also led to me filling a square on my own bingo card @star-spangled-bingo
Squares Filled: Giving Kids A Bath
Pairing: Dad!Bucky x Reader, appearances by Steve and Sam
Warnings: fluff, cute toddlers, sneakiness
Word Count: 1289
Normally the bathtub was your personal oasis. You’d use whatever bath bomb had been gifted to you from Wanda or Natasha, or pull out your favorite Bath & Body Works scent. Rarely you would use the Library of Flowers bath oil Bucky had splurged on for you one random shopping trip he did with Steve.
Tonight you were going out with Wanda and Nat, tasking Bucky with dinner, bath time, and bedtime. He had been quick to assure you all three would be in good hands and yes he would use the tub in your bathroom.
You hadn’t had a girls night since the twins were born. He practically shoved you out as the women greeted you at the door. Bucky then turned to Bianca with a wide grin. “Now that mommy’s gone, do you want some pizza?”
“Eetza!” the little girl repeated. The twins laid on their blanket, staring up at the play gym above them. Spencer reached up to grab a ring while Shawn blew bubbles. “Eetza!” Bianca squealed again. Bucky grabbed her in his hands and blew raspberries against her belly, making her squeal louder. The boys couldn’t see their sister but chose to yell along with her. Bucky stopped his antics hoping it would calm the group down. The boys quieted immediately but Bianca kept up her chant “Eetza!”
Bucky chuckled, reaching across all the kids to grab the cordless phone off the coffee table. He called the nearest pizza place and ordered an extra large pepperoni pizza and two small pizzas, one veggie, one deluxe. As soon as he hung up, the front door opened. Bianca’s eyes grew wide and she shrieked “Unk ‘Teve! Unk ‘Am!” Steve picked her up and gave her a big bear hug. Sam rubbed her head and squatted down beside the boys. “Little dudes, wassup?”
Bucky had roped Sam and Steve into helping him without telling you. What could it hurt, he wondered at the time. Already Steve had Bianca hanging upside down and laughing. Sam was trying to distract both boys who were trying to turn over onto their stomachs. Bucky shook his head. Did I just inherit two MORE kids instead of extra adult help, he wondered now?
Spencer finally made it over on his stomach and grinned at Sam. “Way to go little dude!” Sam lifted Spencer’s hand to high-five his own. Shawn saw it and started wailing in protest. Bucky scooped his son up and cooed. “Don’t worry buddy. You’ll get there.”
A heavy knock on the door sounded. Steve grabbed it, with Bianca’s ankle still in one hand. The pizza guy’s glance went immediately to the little girl. “Um…” Steve set the girl down on the floor gently and took the stack of pizza boxes, signing for the order. Once the door was shut, Bianca started up again. “Eetza! Eetza! Eetza!” Steve set the boxes down on the coffee table.
“Steve, you stay on Bianca duty, I’ll find the paper plates,” Bucky instructed as he headed towards the kitchen. He opened the cupboards above the sink where they normally were, but came up empty. Grumbling he pulled out a few of their everyday plates. As he took down the last one, he noticed there was silence coming from the living room. It was eerily silent. Taking the plates with him, Bucky walked quickly back to the living room; it was completely empty save for the pizzas. Bucky groaned to himself.
“Baby girl, it’s pizza time! Where are you?” He thought he heard her giggle, but it seemed so far away. “Baby girl, come on! Pizza’s getting cold!” It went silent again. Bucky’s heart started hammering in his chest. His first thought? You were going to kill him if anything happened to the kids. His second thought? He was taking Sam and Steve with him.
Bucky set the plates down and listened intently for a moment. He tilted his head before sneaking into the guest bedroom. He heard a small thump; Bucky opened the closet door closest to him. Steve frowned as he guided Bianca out of the closet. “Punk,” Steve whined.
“Daddy!” Bianca hugged his leg. “You hide!”
“Come on baby girl, let’s find your brothers and Uncle Sam,” he lifted Bianca and put her on his shoulders. She grabbed his hair tightly. “Easy there!”
Steve pulled her off Bucky and put her on his shoulders instead. “Grab away! Besides,” he leaned over to Bucky, “you can’t afford to lose any hair.”
“Jerk,” Bucky muttered as he walked down the hallway. “Boys! Sam! Come on out!”
There was silence. Bucky turned back to Steve. “Do you hear that?”
Steve nodded. “It’s too damn quiet for all three of ‘em.” Bucky nodded. “I’ll take Bianca back to the living room for pizza and see if they snuck back. You check their room.” Bianca pulled Steve’s hair as he galloped away. “”Orsey, go ‘orsey!” the little girl urged.
Bucky started into the boys’ room. “Shawn, Spencer!” Silence.
He turned and stepped back into the hallway, still listening for the boys and Sam. Sam could never stay quiet for this long; Bucky considered where he could be and not be heard. He groaned and hoped beyond hope he was wrong. Bucky jogged back to the living room, passing Bianca covered in pizza sauce and opened the front door. Sam sat in the hallway, kid on each knee, chatting with Maria and Carol. Shawn blew Bucky a bubble in greeting.
Bucky rolled his eyes as he took Shawn, then Spencer, away from Sam; he went back inside and sat each kid in their highchairs in the kitchen. Both boys watched as Bucky pulled two jars out of the pantry. “All right. One stinker is getting Apple Spinach Kale and the other is getting Sweet Potato Apple Carrot & Cinnamon. Drawing straws?”
Steve poked his head in. “Um… Bianca needs a bath.”
Bucky rolled his eyes. “Ok, then you feed these two and I’ll take her.” She walked in, pizza sauce smeared across her entire face and streaked down her favorite pink blouse. Bucky groaned inwardly imagining having to buy her a new top. “Come on messy girl, bath time!”
Bucky took her into your bathroom and started the water in your tub. “Arms up!” he directed. She lifted her tiny arms and let out a squeal as Bucky placed another raspberry on her stomach. “Ok now we can take off your pants and diaper. Ready?” Bianca let him take off her remaining clothes as he snuck a small bath bomb you had gotten Bianca for Christmas. The little girl looked in the tub and giggled at the bright pink bubbles coming up. “Yay!”
Bucky lifted her and set her in the tub; Bianca giggled and splashed for a little while. A stray bubble popped in her face; she scrunched her face into a pout. Bucky was quick with a little cup of water. “Close your eyes baby girl,” as he gently poured the water over her face. She sputtered once and opened her clear blue eyes with a grin. “Again!”
“How ‘bout I sing to you instead, ok?” Bucky thought for a moment. “'Cause girls like you/ Run around with guys like me/ 'Til sundown, when I come through/ I need a girl like you, yeah yeah/ Girls like you/ Love fun, yeah me too/ What I want when I come through/ I need a girl like you, yeah yeah.” Bianca listened her dad, adoration clear in her bright eyes.
“Sorry to interrupt,” Steve said from the door. “Got room for two more?” Bucky turned to see both of his sons covered in baby food from head to toe. He pointed at the sink with a grin. “Have it Steve!”

2019 Mnet Asian Music Awards Nominations
The twenty-first annual Mnet Asian Music Awards will be hosted at Nagoya Dome in Nagoya, Japan on December 4.
Note: As usual, the list also includes points claims nominated where applicable. If a points claim was nominated for the award in real life in the year it was released, was released as a single in-’verse during this year’s eligibility period and experienced a similar level of success in-character (involves certain considerations like promoted vs. non-promoted, in-’verse charting and music show wins, etc.), it was added. If it wasn’t, it was either was not eligible following those specifications, the category was filled by nominees better fitting those specifications, or another song by the same muse was more qualified for the same category and was nominated. If something seems to have somehow been overlooked, please bring it to the admin’s attention.
*The only exception to the above rules here is that Lipstick was given a Best Female Group nomination in place of Girl’s Generation-Oh!GG’s Best Unit nomination since “Lil’ Touch” was not released as a sub-unit song in-universe.
All categories should also be assumed to have miscellaneous NPC nominees, so being the only nominee listed in a category does not mean an automatic win.
This is all for fun, so don’t take any of it too seriously! Nominations are based purely on MAMA’s own nomination history and do not involve the admin’s subjective opinion. These are only posted to give nominated muses more ongoing content to write about, but no one is required to write about them or even care about them!

2019: A Year in Kpop
Dickens once wrote in his novel, A Tale of Two Cities, “It was the best of the times, it was the worst of the times”. This phrase aptly sums up the year of 2019 for Kpop - a moniker for Korean Pop. Some called 2019 the best year for Kpop in this decade while others called it the worst year of Kpop.
In my last review, I wrote how 2018 was a big year for Kpop as it wrecked havoc much of the western world like a storm. And as expected, in year 2019, Kpop is just getting even bigger and gaining more momentum outside its safe haven of South Korea and the larger Asian continent in general. Known for its dedicated and strong fanbases, Kpop industry has become a commodity. The soft power of Kpop — and the corollary fashion and beauty industry — catapults the South Korean economy, racking in billions of dollars back into the country, especially with the success of the global acts like BTS and BlackPink. Suddenly, everyone wants a bit of Kpop. The western media were scurrying to appeal and sign on with Kpop acts such as BTS, BlackPink, Monster X, Ateez, TXT and SuperM to name a few. 2019 saw Kpop acts appear in many American TV shows and music festivals, as well as performing concerts in many cities. In all, it is safe to say that Kpop has taken ground in America.
To begin, 2019 is a year of BTS. A year ago I also said 2018 was the year of BTS. I told my friend that BTS has such an amazing year in 2018. To that, my friend replied: BTS hasn’t even reached their peak yet. I was a little skeptical back then. How much bigger would they get? Oh boy I was wrong. 2019 is a huge year for BTS — and even huge might be an understatement. For those who are still unaware, they are the biggest boyband in the world right now. A short for Bangtan Sonyeondan or literally Bulletproof Boyscouts, BTS broke many records and took home countless of awards this year with the release of Map of the Soul: Persona. The album takes inspiration from Jung’s thesis in psychology of the same name: Map of the Soul. Following Persona, fans are expecting that Shadow and Ego could be the next releases. For the first time since the Beatles, they had three number one album in Billboard 200 within a year. This year, the septet completed their world stadium tour and sold millions of seats, with historic performance in Wembley London and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. However, for me, it is the performance for the MMA stage that left strong impression, especially so the solo performances.
Moreover, their single Boy-with-Luv, a collaboration with Halsey, is named the song of the year in Korean year end music awards, broke the Youtube records, and last but not least loved by many. Boy-with-Luv (Korean name: A Poem for Small Things) is a catchy pop-song with bubbly and cheerful tones complementing the visuals. The B-side tracks also shine with Mikrokosmos being the feel-good song and Make it Right, composed by Ed Sheeran, as your mainstream chill-pop song. Home is my personal favourite with its jazz and R&B textures, followed by Jamais Vu for its interesting musicality. The album ends with Dionysus, a hard-hitting hip-hop of old school Bangtan.
If the Kpop boy group is dominated by BTS, one could said BlackPink is the counterpart for the girl group. BlackPink released its most anticipated comeback yet with Kill This Love which top many charts. Kill This Love was briefly named the most viewed MV in YouTube, only to be sidelined by BTS’ Boy-with-Luv just a week after. Kill This Love is a marching-band style hip hop song that is a typical of BlackPink hard-banging repertoire. This comeback pulled through YG amidst the scandals embroiling their senior group Big Bang and YG’s executives. Some might even call BlackPink as a saviour for YG. However, fans lamented for the lack of supports for BlackPink, arguably the sole powerhouse of YG right now, with Kill This Love remains but another mini album. To date, BlackPink, a three-year old group has not released a full album yet. In this album, Don’t Know What To Do is my personal favourite, followed by Kick It and Ddu Du Ddu Du remix. Admittedly, Ddu Du Ddu Du was the most successful BlackPink release ever, with the MV crossing the 1B stream in YouTube this year. BlackPink too went for a successful world tour and was featured in Coachella this year.
Now that we have cleared the big acts of 2019, let us sails through the rest of the Kpop acts. Older and senior groups like EXO and Super Junior made comebacks this year as well with Obsession and Super Clap respectively. With the members starting military services, remaining active EXO members such as Baekhyun and Chen releasing solo songs and Chanyeol and Sehun as duo. In addition to individual EXO members having busy schedule, it is no wonder and expected that we will only getting only one comeback each year. The following year we may expect more solo activities or subunits as well, especially with more members serving the military. Meanwhile, Super Junior is finally coming back as a full group, with Ryeowook and Kyuhyun ending their military service.
It is worth mentioning that Seventeen, another rising star in Kpop is having a big year in 2019 with three releases, Home, Hit and Fear. Of those, Home catapults Seventeen to greater height earlier in the year. In my opinion, Home appeals to larger audience, while Hit is a banger and Fear just okay. Seventeen, known for their amazing vocals and dance synchronisation, is going for world tour in 2020. We can expect big thing from Seventeen. Meanwhile, MonstaX has a bumpy year in 2019. Embroiled with controversies, MonstaX saw Wonho leaving the group in the second half of the year, shocking fans both in Korea and internationally. This was a major setback given 2018 had been a big year for MonstaX. They were featured in many American shows as well as making cameo in Bare Bears series. We can only hope Wonho and the rest of MonstaX members are are coping well through this unfortunate incident. Alligator and Follow were two major releases from MonstaX this year. Both are arguably typical MonstaX sounds. Other acts like Got7, Nuest, Winner, NCT also make comebacks, but are lacking the hypes compared to Seventeen and MonstaX. Perhaps, NCT 127 who are riding into their popularity in America is worth a special mention. However, Superhuman isn’t as powerful as Regular or Simon Says. NCT dream meanwhile, cameback with Boom Boom, which surprised me with catchy chorus.
In the girl group scenes, Twice has a good year as well. I mean when will Twice not have a good year right? This nation-loved girl group has two major releases with Fancy and Feel Special. Fancy is another Twice-ish song, loved by many and doing well in charts, but pales against Boy-with-Luv and internationally against Kill This Love. In fact, all these songs were released back to back. 2019 is indeed a year fandom war. Besides BlackPink and Twice, Red Velvet made three comebacks with Zimzalabim, Umpah Umpah and Psycho. The first two were the ‘Red’ sound while Psycho ‘Velvet’. To be honest, Psycho trumps them all. Befitting the name, the soft yet piercing high pitch sound is the unique signature of this song. It’s new and fresh. Similar concept to Peek-a-Boo and Bad Boy, Psycho is a must-listen. Unfortunately, Wendy, one of the members suffered injury during the year end music festival and I wish for a swift recovery for her.
Mamamoo was another big girl group that dominated 2019. Riding on the rising popularity in 2018 with their four seasons’ albums, Mamamoo had a comeback with Gogobebe and Hip. Both songs earned high spots in Korean major charts. One of the members, Hwasa also had a successful solo career with Twit, a catchy song laced with flute textures. Other acts such as GFriend, AOA and APink also made comebacks among others. APink, being a senior group among the rest, is worth mentioning for their comeback %%. If you haven’t listen to it, please do. %% was definitely a good song to start 2019.
In the rookie scene, Tomorrow by Together, the new Bighit boy group and the junior group to BTS had an amazing year with two major releases, Crown (Korean: One Day Horns Grew Out of my Head) being the debut song and Run Away (Korean: I Will Wait for You At Platform 9 3/4), their first comeback. Crown is the fun and bubbly pop song with Run Away delivering emo-rock style. We give a round of applaud to TXT (the short form — Bighit with its naming sense) for fresh sounds, setting them apart from the senior group BTS. ITZY, the new JYP girl group also had successful debut year. If TXT is called global Global Super Rookie, ITZY is the Monster Rookie for stellar performance in Korean charts and abroad especially wth Dalla Dalla — though not my kind of sound. One special mention is Oneus with Lit, a banger with Korean inspired sound — think of BTS’ Idol.
The budding acts like Ateez and (G)Idle both have two comebacks this year. The former with Wave, a tropical house sound and Wonderland, a marching band-inspired sound, while the latter, continuing the Latin vibes with Senorita and Lion. Everglow also had successful comeback with releases such as Bon Bon Chocolat and Adios. Both are good catchy summer songs, with Adios being another marching band-inspired sound. It seems that 2020 will see the trend shift to this style of music. Meanwhile, Pentagon made a comeback with Humph!. This was the first comeback after EDawn left the group earlier. Humph! continues to deliver the signature sound of Pentagon, with its minimal layers of instruments.
The solo scene is dominated by Chung Ha, with successful releases such as Gotta Go at the start of the year and Snapping the second half. Chung Ha overshadowed Sunmi, who made a comeback with Lalalay. Lalalay is unique for its retro high-pitch eastern inspired instrumental sound. Big acts like IU and Taeyeon also made huge comebacks this year. IU’s Love Poem and Blueming performed well in charts as usual. Taeyeon had two releases, one at the start of the year with Four Seasons and one at the end of the year with Spark. Both songs did well. In the R&B scene, Heize released We Don’t Talk Together, composed by BTS’ Suga. The song is laden thick with emotions coupled with melancholic instrumental and visual. It seems that females dominated the solo scene, even in the OSTs scenes, with songs from Hotel del Luna blocking the charts. Of which, Heize’s Can You See My Heart?, Taeyeon’s A Poem About You and Paul Kim’s Goodbye are my personal favourites. Correction, Paul Kim is perhaps the only male act worth mentioning here who had a successful year with Me after You, Goodbye and Every Day Every Moment (a 2018’s release!).
In the duo scene, Bolbbagan4 and AKMU had an amazing 2019. Being digital Monster, Bolbbagan4’s releases are loved by Koreans. This year, the duo cameback with Workaholic. Meanwhile, AKMU is finally making a comeback after Lee Chan Hyuk’s release from military service with How Can I Love the Heartbreak, You Are the One I Love. Both songs earned them Perfect-All-Kill (PAK) in Korean charts (after the new system). The other PAK worth mentioning are IU’s Love Poem and Blueming as well as BTS’ Boy-with-Luv — the only PAK with the old system, arguably harder to achieve. Congratulation to all winners.
The band scene saw the rise of Jannabi, the indie band with retro sound. For Lovers Who Hesitate is an ode to the nineties, with its warm and tender retro sound. It’s also worth mentioning that the vocalist of Jannabi has charming and swoon-worthy vocals. Although the band faced some bumpy road that ended up with one member leaving the team, Jannabi is an act to watch for. N-Flying also had a successful start of 2019 with Rooftop. Originally the song didn’t do well in the chart but slowly rising and top the rank eventually, making them a rising newcomer in this industry. That leaves us with mature group like Day6 who has had stable releases over the years. This year Day6 releases Sweet Chaos, an alternative-rock bop.
While 2019 was a good year for many acts, 2019 also saw the rear side of Kpop. I won’t go through them in detail but it’s good to reflect on these series of events and hopefully do better in the next decade. To begin, 2019 is marred by the Burning Sun prostitution and drugs scandal that led to Seungri quitting Big Bang and Yang Hyun Suk leaving YG. Following this, the Jung Joon Young’s scandal on the sharing of explicit content in KakaoTalk, a Korean messaging platform, caused many acts to retire from the entertainment industry and brought others into the spotlight. The floodgate didn’t just stop there, B.I., the leader of iKon was also reported to have purchased drugs some years ago. B.I. left iKon, who had a successful 2018. The end of the year, we also learnt that the Produce 101 series were rigged with briberies and vote manipulations. The producers reportedly picked the final line-ups prior to nation-producers’ final voting counts. That is why also X1 and IZ-one had tough year in 2019, despite both of them having good releases prior to the exposé. I wonder how their future will look like? Lastly, Park Kyung exposed some artists for suspicion of sajaegi, or chart manipulation, that sparked a nationwide discussion. In fact, the issue of sajaegi had been raised up multiple times in the recent years but seemed to have blown-up more this year, with many artists stand in solidarity against sajaegi and fairer system.
Before we end, allow us too a moment of silence. 2019 saw the passing of fx’s Sulli and Kara’s Hara, victims of malicious commenters and haters. It seems we didn’t learn from the passing of Jonghyun two years ago. While we are deeply mourning for the loss, I hope they are now in better place, happy and resting in peace.
In short, 2019 is indeed the best year of Kpop — and the worst at the same time. However, as previously said by Jang Geu Rae of Misaeng: when a project fails, it means we never planned properly, but we shouldn’t throw away the lessons from this failed project, we should learn from the setbacks and plan for better future. Echoing RM’s speech in Golden Disk Awards, we hope that Kpop artists will continue to work hard, produce good musics and be rewarded fairly. Let us hope for better Kpop scene in the new decade.
Happy New Year.

feb eval ‘20 perf song choice ; 7 rings + bad guy + senorita | pop medley
even with all the preparation jibeom had done for the evaluation this month, he wasn’t sure how much of it would have actually prepared him for the actual performance. despite having gotten better with his confidence in performing, he still let his nerves psyche him out.
he paces back and forth through the hallways of trc as he clenches his fists around his water bottle. he twists off the cap and takes a long swig and swishes it around before swallowing and sighing with deep relief. deep breaths, breathe in and breathe out. he could do this. he was ready. he was more than ready. he would blow the trainers away and prove why he’s very deserving of the title of winter singer and why he deserves to be a trainee under trc.
when it comes time for his turn, jibeom closes his eyes and exhales before walking into the practice room and getting into position. he bows first before timidly smiling. “i’m one month trainee, kim jibeom.”
he tilts his head left and then right as he lifts the microphone to his lips to sing his special rendition mashup pop medley.
Yeah, breakfast at Tiffany's and bottles of bubbles Girls with tattoos who like getting in trouble Lashes and diamonds, ATM machines Buy myself all of my favorite things (yeah)
the good thing about knowing english is that covers of english songs come just a little bit easier. he can also add in spoken “rap” parts to songs, too to spice things up a bit.
My wrist, stop watchin', my neck is flossin' Make big deposits, my gloss is poppin' You like my hair? Gee, thanks, just bought it I see it, I like it, I want it, I got it (yeah)
he switches over to the next song in his mashup and the vibe changes again.
White shirt now red, my bloody nose Sleeping, you're on your tippy toes Creeping around like no one knows Think you're so criminal
So you're a tough guy Like it really rough guy Just can't get enough guy Chest always so puffed guy I'm that bad type Make your mama sad type Make your girlfriend mad tight Might seduce your dad type I'm the bad guy, duh
the next song is another popular pop song that’s been playing on the radio. it’s a contrast from the darker vibes that bad guy had and feels a lot more summer-y and hot and fun and also very flirty.
Land in Miami The air was hot from summer rain Sweat dripping off me Before I even knew her name, la la la It felt like ooh la la la Yeah no Sapphire moonlight We danced for hours in the sand Tequila sunrise Her body fit right in my hands, la la la It felt like ooh la la la, yeah
he makes it through the last song in his mashup which happened to be his second favorite of the three after 7 rings. senorita had a fun and flirty vibe that jibeom wished he had out right. he had to mentally prepare himself to sing in a sexier tone just for it.
it’s not the best performance jibeom’s ever truly done but also not even the worst. as far as evaluations go, he’s pretty content with this being his first one. not to mention he really enjoyed his rendition of a rock-esque mashup of these songs.

REVIEWING THE CHARTS 2020: 17/01
I don’t really have an intro for this one so: REVIEWING THE CHARTS 2020. Let’s get into it.
Top 10
At number-one, for the third week in a row, is “Own It” by Stormzy featuring Burna Boy and Ed Sheeran, and honestly I don’t really see a foreseeable threat to this song’s throne, but much like all songs in January, it’s a pretty weak stance and could easily fall to an unexpected climber.
Lewis Capaldi’s “Before You Go” is once again stalling at the runner-up spot.
At number-three, we have a surprise debut from an artist I didn’t think would ever peak this high in the UK, Future, who has partnered with Drake for “Life is Good”, a collaboration that is clenching the top spots on a bunch of charts, I’d imagine, mostly because of Drake. God knows how many top 10 or top 40 singles he has at this point, I’m not going to even bother counting them. Future, on the other hand, has had his highest ever charting song on the UK Singles Chart this week, and his third UK Top 40 single (His first hit in the top 10 ever). Congratulations, I suppose, but we’ll talk about the song a bit later.
Due to the sudden debut, most of the top 10 is falling this week. First of all, “Don’t Start Now” by Dua Lipa is down a spot to number-four.
“The Box” by Roddy Ricch seems to immediately abolish that trend as it has rocketed up 11 spaces in the chart to number-five, perhaps highlighting a possible #1 candidate in the coming weeks. It’s Roddy’s first top 10 hit in the UK.
“ROXANNE” by Arizona Zervas is down two spaces to number-six.
Lewis Capaldi’s “Someone You Loved” is stable at number-seven for some God forsaken reason.
The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” is up two spots to number-eight and with the video release, I could see this peaking even higher.
Justin Bieber’s “Yummy” falls hard off of the debut, being nearly pushed out of the top 10, losing four spaces to number-nine.
Finally, “Dance Monkey” by Tones and I is down four spots to #10. Sure.
Climbers
We have a rare week where there are no notable climbers at all outside of the top 10, which is emblematic of a certain period on the chart.
Fallers
In January, popular music repeats itself and the chart regurgitates the biggest hits of the year for a brief month where nothing can seemingly actually make a spin for the top spot or become a smash hit, and everything somehow collapses, and every debut goes nowhere, only to be gone by March. It should be the month where the smash hit songs appear on the charts for the first time, and it usually is, but it definitely never seems like that, as the chart is so dry and after the influx of 2019’s greatest hits, we seem to have reached a new equilibrium, so we can start waving goodbye to our fallers and drop-outs; I doubt we’ll see many of them again. “Ride It” by Regard featuring Jay Sean is down six spots to #16, “South of the Border” by Ed Sheeran featuring Camila Cabello and Cardi B is down seven spaces to #24, as is “Gangsta” by Darkoo and One Acen at #26, “HIGHEST IN THE ROOM” by Travis Scott and remixed by ROSALIA and Lil Baby is down five to #30, “Senorita” by Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello is down five to #35, and finally, “Lights Up” by Harry Styles is down eight positions to #40.
Dropouts & Returning Entries
There aren’t any returning entries, after all, we seldom have too many re-entries to the chart, but there is a handful of dropouts from the chart. First of all, we have the three-songs-per-artist rule coming into effect for the first notable time in a while, as since there’s a new Stormzy song, “Audacity” featuring Headie One is out from #26 and I’m going to predict it’s definitely back next week. Also out is the promising new arrival “Savage” by MIST out off of the debut at #35, non-starter, “Into the Unknown” by Idina Menzel and AURORA from the Frozen II soundtrack, out from #37, and “Heartless” by the Weeknd, out from #38.
Before we get into the new arrivals, here are some songs in the top 75 that have a trajectory seemingly aiming for the top 40, that I’d like to see get there. Not all of these songs are good but they are all healthy predictions. We have “Good News” by the late Mac Miller at #49, “Power Over Me” by Dermot Kennedy at #60, “Say So” by Doja Cat at #65, “SUGAR” by BROCKHAMPTON at #66, “Eleven” by Khalid at #70, and “Roses” by Saint Jhn at #72. I’d bet money on most of these eventually making the top 40. Anyway, here’s the main attraction:
NEW ARRIVALS
#37 – “You should be sad” – Halsey
Produced by Greg Kurstin
It should be no surprise that I’m not the biggest fan of Halsey. Part of her alternative-pop-girl image was really pretentious and turned me off initially but once she fully embraced she was a pop singer, whilst I respect her more, I still found her lacking, arguably more so, as a singer and songwriter. This song, however, is pretty unique, and it comes from her album Manic, which I’ve yet to listen to. It’s a country song, funnily enough right next to the only other country song that made a big splash in the UK last year, “Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, which is at #36. It’s not a common occurrence for country songs to appear on the UK Singles Chart, for obvious reasons, but I’ll take a Shania Twain-influenced country pop song dependent on more neo-traditional 90s pedal-steel—Listen, I know little to nothing about country, and I’m throwing all these random key terms around... I’m not necessarily the best person to speak on this, and I know that, but I guess I’ll see if I myself prefer Halsey’s ninth UK top 40 hit. For what it’s worth, the guitar line here is really sweet, but Halsey’s voice with an additional country twang and drowned in reverb, just sounds kind of gross and ugly? I guess that’s the best way to say it, and even though sometimes it works, she seems way too downbeat and subtle for a vengeful kiss-off... until the entire flow of the verse obstructs for the chorus, which is introduced by a really dodgy, awkward wave of distorted strings that just sound awful. Whatever tone, genre, style or mood this song attempts to build up is immediately broken by that, and whilst some of these lyrics are really specific and genuinely pretty good, I’m tuned out until that killer electric guitar riff comes in and steals the show... before it just goes again. It’s not like there’s build-up to the riff either, or that it’s a break from the momentum because everything just keeps happening in the background. It’s not a drop because there’s no climax or catharsis to it, it’s just a cool riff that’s... there. Yeah, this is wasted potential, and that’s not even including the questionable at best mixing and whatever the hell that bridge is. This song might actually be broken, like what happened in the mediating process, guys? Who leant on seven wrong buttons at the same time? God, what a hot mess of a song.
#28 – “Rare” – Selena Gomez
Produced by Sir Nolan and Simon Says
Selena Gomez has a new album. It’s where “Lose You to Love Me” comes from. It’s probably pretty mediocre. I do not care for Selena Gomez. She makes robot pop music. It is about as standard and droning as these sentences. This is her 16th solo UK top 40 hit, or without “the Scene” if you prefer—that clause alone gives me more character than a Selena Gomez album. Sometimes with good songwriters, she can get something decent out of her limited range and bland production, and with Madison Love as a songwriter and Charli XCX involved as the person originally handed the song, I actually have somewhat high expectations for this, and you know what? It’s promising. The lo-fi bass groove and steady funk/soul groove in the intro is pretty sweet, but then the whole 2019 pop schtick comes in, and some of the soul is lost, but it has a pretty quirky, fun string instrumental with nice, bubbly synths and seemingly randomly-placed hi-hats. Here, Gomez actually works pretty well as she stays calm until the chorus, and she doesn’t sound too bad there, even if she’s desperately filling up the meter with nonsense, because it does sound like a child’s nursery rhyme. Hence, she fits in perfectly with the petty lyrics and cute instrumental. The guitar in the post-chorus/bridge sounds really great too. Perhaps it is over-long though, as three minutes and 40 seconds does make the chorus wear off, although it really could not have been as good as a song without that bridge, as the slow sense of dread is keeping up in the pre-chorus, with that intense bass groove and what seem to be airplane crash sound effects, only to propel itself back into a really cute chorus, with kind of an 80s sound I’m just noticing. Yeah, this is pretty good, and it has Charli XCX kind of written all over it. I’d like to hear a remix if that’s fine with you, Selena. You’ve impressed me with this one.
#21 – “STILL DISAPPOINTED” – Stormzy
Produced by Mikey J
This is Stormzy’s 22nd UK Top 40 hit and Christ, there’s a lot to unpack with this one. Okay, so this is the 2019-2020 Grime War, or at least that’s what r/grime is calling it. There have been 32 rappers or MCs involved in the war so far, including Ed Sheeran, but most are just mentioned in diss tracks, or “dubs” as the grime scene calls them, without responding. Basically, JAY1, who has been on this show before, didn’t pay Dot Rotten for producing the song “Million Bucks”, which was credited to Steel Banglez (It’s actually a great beat, by the way, I’d want credit too), so Dot Rotten released three dubs, one of which was copyright-claimed by JAY1, thus in response Dot released another song called “Copyright Claim This, P***y”. Classy. Then two of the most desperate-for-attention people in the grime scene find themselves dissing each other: Dot Rotten and Wiley. Within four days, Dot Rotten releases eight dubs. There’s this whole mess with Wiley, Dot and Jaykae, but then finally, a fan asks if he will be dissing Jaykae. Wiley says, “Never, he’s with Ed and Stormzy now”. Hence, Wiley and Stormzy go back and forth for a while on Twitter, and the beef escalates, with Wiley posting a Stormzy dub called “Eeydiat Skengman”, which is just okay, but has a pretty killer beat. Stormzy responds with “DISAPPOINTED”, but the reception is lukewarm. Sure, the Brexit joke was funny, but he had mostly weak bars and he also called himself the King of Grime over a drill beat. In fact, might as well cover all the Wiley tracks: they all sound the same. The beef has mostly stopped for now, but it’s still going on in the lower echelon. I would argue it probably stopped because of Stormzy’s final dub, “STILL DISAPPOINTED”, which is hilarious, and actually on a grime beat, in fact it’s on an iconic beat from the first Lord of the Mics in 2004, “Mic Check 1-2” by Kano. It starts out pretty okay, Stormzy just saying that he’s a real G and all... but then:
So why you love to talk about mums so much?
The entire diss track is about Wiley’s mother, and that when Wiley’s house was threatened by bricks and guns during gang violence, he (supposedly) sent her to Cyprus instead of trying to rescue her and improving her quality of life. He then says that his mother is pregnant because Wiley is fraud (Huh?), that Stormzy will have sex with his mother, and that she is a whore, but it’s not her fault that she had to move to Cyprus, but he will still have sex with his mother and become the man of the house. He takes only a few bars to relax and stop going on this tangent detailing Wiley’s mother’s move to Cyprus, but then comes back to the topic again, and whilst some of the bars make seemingly no sense at least to me, the dub is cruel and so oddly specific that I’d be incredibly offended. I’d probably want to fight Stormzy after this, honestly, and the song isn’t even that great. It’s a diss track, so I can’t really critique it as a song and not a personal attack, but Stormzy’s flow and charisma is definitely there and this was a funny listen.
Also, this line had me cackling:
I never wanna hear you say, "Free the mandem" (Yeah) / Let's go Cyprus and go free your mumzy
#3 – “Life is Good” – Future and Drake
Produced by OZ and D. Hill
It is so weird to see Future here. Drake not so much obviously, but this song peaked at #2 in the US, nearly giving Future his first #1, all thanks to Drake. Without Drake, the song would still be entirely coherent but it wouldn’t chart at all. That’s because this is not a collaboration in any sense of the word. It wouldn’t even fit under the guise of their little collaborative effort, What a Time to be Alive. It’s a Drake song, and then a Future song. Hold on, let me change this.
#3 – “Life is Good” – Drake, then Future
Produced by OZ and D. Hill
I don’t mind guest artists having solo sections of songs, hell, Drake had one on Travis Scott’s “SICKO MODE” a year back, but there’s a beat switch in the middle that completely separates both performances. Drake has a chorus, as does Future. Drake has a verse, Future has two—under two completely separate beats. At least on “SICKO MODE”, Travis joined in with Drake and Tay Keith for a verse and a couple ad-libs under the same beat. Sigh, I guess it doesn’t matter in the end, even though Future cheated a chart placement; it’s not as obviously fraudulent as Ellie Goulding’s efforts, or John Legend’s. I’m surprised that a plain and simple trap-rap song charted this high in the first place, even if it was just Drake (And for most people who skip after the first two minutes, it might as well be). I don’t know why I’m complaining honestly, because the song is honestly pretty good. I would have usually dismissed this as dark trap-rap nonsense with no redeemable qualities, but this is one of those songs with such a lack of energy it’s almost eerie, and those creepy synths in Drake’s part are fantastic in making it sound like that. Repeating inflections from “Mob Ties” aside, Drake’s performance is pretty good, with a couple funny lines, although I’m not sure how intentionally funny they were.
Haven’t done my taxes, I’m too turnt up
[Gnarly dude]s caught me slippin’ once, okay, so what?
I think Pusha T’s diss track about you hiding a child was a bit more than being caught slipping once, Aubrey. Anyway, after a voice memo interlude from Future, we have a pretty great beat, with an admittedly stiff but still impressive trap groove, and while Future is less on beat than Drake and arguably less interesting, he rides the beat well enough, and the synths are really quiet, for whatever reason. Regardless, this is a pretty cool song with great flows from both rappers and an eerie, cool beat from OZ.
I’m trying to avoid nonsense, get Osama spray in this b****, woo!
HUH
Conclusion
This was actually a pretty great week, with the obvious Worst of the Week going to Halsey’s “You should be sad”, and a surprising Best of the Week for “Rare” by Selena Gomez. In fact, I’m going to give a tied Honourable Mention instead of any Dishonourable Mentions, so it’s going to Stormzy’s “STILL DISAPPOINTED” and Drake’s, then Future’s, “Life is Good”. Follow me on Twitter @cactusinthebank, I’ll see you next week.

Something, something, something... Beaufort scale...
... metaphors for high speed air currents and their effects are bound to spring to mind with a band called Little Hurricane, But. Must. Be. Resisted...
Their only UK date drew a full-house of ardent fans who seemed to know all the words (even when they were talking over them) and who were very much up for a fizzing, high-energy show. The San Diego duo certainly didn’t hang around, opening their 18-song set with the brutal drumming and wild, spare frenzied guitar of Superblues and the pace barely relented for the next 70 minutes. The raw and vital Fourth Of July, a twangsome Get By, the dark, eerie 50s-flavoured Summer Air, and the staccato strut of a brief snatch of Hold Me Back followed in rapid succession, propelled by CC’s hypertensive-heartbeat drums, and Tone’s jagged guitar and strangely vulnerable-yet-defiant vocal.
A clutch of tracks from new release Same Sun, Same Moon began with the quirky percussion and airier guitar chords of Mt. Senorita, and that (marginally) more relaxed mood continued into the spacey, hazy soul vibe of For Life. The impassioned vox-and-rimshot intro to Bad Business burst into a gritty 21st century Delta juggernaut à la Gary Clark Jr, Tone adding fierce slide (played lap-style on top of a flight case!) while March Of The Living was a Duane-Eddy-does-Ace-Of-Spades thrashy instrumental, with a frantic rockabilly beat.
Little Hurricane have said they were influenced by touring with the Specials a while back, and there were snatches of 2 Tone and reggae bubbling under (or over) throughout: in the strangely dancey Ashes-To-Ashes-inna-dub-stylee Isn’t It Great; in the jerky Roxanne feel of Haunted Heart and the choppy, Waileresque OTL.
A trio of unexpected covers popped up: first a mesmeric take on Johnny Cash’s God’s Gonna Cut You Down, CC’s pile-driving beat overlaid with Tone’s gruff low-register vox and meaty slide; Moby’s Natural Blues, given a brooding, insistent 80s New Order feel; and a pretty faithful mellow and moody rendition of Bill Withers’ Ain’t No Sunshine.
The set closed with Crocodile Tears: Tone and CC sharing a sinister, cynical vocal call and response, fuelled by a techno kick-and-hi-hat beat with overdriven, reverb-heavy, savage slide adding both the Hooker-style spare riff and wild siren calls. And then it was over, with no encore (despite enthusiastic calls for ‘One more song’).
Plunger will admit that the ‘new blues duo’ format (very much in vogue right now) isn’t really their hot beverage of choice: restricted to guitar and drums it can all get a bit ‘samey’ and a strict diet of three-minute canters doesn’t leave much room for nuances of tone or colour, development of themes (or long solos, yes fair enough, you’ve got Plunger bang to rights...) but Little Hurricane showed they can do more than just thud-whack-jangle-growl... and the show certainly didn’t drag. In fact it felt like it had been a lot shorter than it really was, which is probably a good sign, right?
Oh, and if you want wind-related waffle ask the Met Office.
