i get now why people say erha is so sad - it's absolutely lethal because not only are you torn to shreds over the trials and tribulations of your favorite characters, but you're also forced to contend with the grey morality inherent to existence.

for example, of course i can say i hate shi mei on a surface level, but i can't actually hate him even though i want to. i can see where he approaches the story from. knowing his heritage, background, and generational trauma - he had every right to be angry. he had every right to hate the cultivation world. not going into his ActionsTM because suffice to say *gestures*

but that's the kicker, isn't it: it's so easy to pin the blame on the antagonist but meatbun writes in a way that compels you otherwise. it's so easy to hate their actions but the core conflict is not their actions - it's the corruption, greed, and exploitation inherent to all hierarchical society that drives characters to hurt others who, in turn, hurt others, who, in turn... you understand.

and those who try to do good? like chu wanning, who goes out of his way to avoid credit for kind actions because it's basic decency and he detests that kind of vulnerability? he is at the center of one of erha's most expansive tragedies, but despite it all, he tries to do good. even when it hurts him. because cultivation society is exploitative, he is misconstrued and misunderstood for others' ulterior motives. sometimes i find myself almost yelling at him - just save yourself! just be selfish for once! but of course that's not who he is, is it?

that's why erha hits hard, in my opinion. because greed and exploitation elevate while kindness and vulnerability leave you open to manipulation and tragedy. but while the greedy can change however the wind blows to save themselves, it's always the kind characters who continue to suffer - it's a byproduct of their inherent drive to help others. they could avoid it, but they care, and so they won't. not can't. won't. and the people who perpetrate the hurt? somehow, you understand the twisted things that drive them, too.

how could you not?

you see them everyday in the real world.

and you ask yourself, why is this the way things are? why can't we change it? my favorite theme of erha is also perhaps the most painful: choosing to do good even when it hurts in a corrupt society. perhaps if everyone were a little like chu wanning, we'd be in a better place. but that is idealistic and unrealistic. you are left to wonder why the world is the way it is, why people are hurt and hurt people the way they do.

the more you wonder, the more you understand why people forgive the way they do. why chu wanning forgives the way he does. it's because when you understand the complex circumstances driving society, you understand that everyone who hurts is hurting themselves. it feels cathartic to hate, but you are left hollow. understanding hurts, but somehow, it's the least they deserve, isn't it? that's just the way kindness flows.

I did a small re-design\interpretation of kings\emperors, because all of them have default standart model (Aside from Lei Shen, he's just "chef kiss") Qiang - I think the toughest one, cause he is tad bit bland. He was very strict king. Thank you, like all mogu emperors pretty much. So he would stay looking as that boy next door. Meng - Mmmmm, yeee Meng. The most Majestic of mighty monarchs. One of my favorite ones. Gotta give him that majestic look... and scars that are mostly self inflicted because he is not all here. Zian - I would say Zian the edge lord. What pisses me off -he and Meng has identical model, while having copletely different character. Meng is a loon, Zian is nightmare incarnated. Will come to spook your sleep paralysis demon. I gave him new robes, because come on, he is a sorcerer. Subetai - Oh my, this one. He sure oozes personality, by saying all his lines half laughing. And again, he is also blue like Ziana nd Meng. Blizz, seriously you have other colours, why u do this to me? ;w; Well, I gave him that "smug and confident" thing going on Xin - Jumped straight from loreal commercial. He is quite ... fluffy. Would pet, even if it cost my hand... Lei shen - Gave him hair. I really didn't wanted to change anyhting. Was tempted to remove that crown of his, cause ... Lets say this is torture. Shan Bu - The only mogu that has a sin stone as far as I know. Imagine being worse that Thunder king. GJ Shan Bu, that's quite an achievement. Gave him a little more of that loreal hair, because, guess what: he joins the "blue mogu" brigade again.

Kinda planning to work on Stormspeaker Qian, but must not make him look like Xin, because, oh no, same model.

Reading Kinky Translations tranlation of Bu Tia Gang by Meng Xishi (Thousand Autumns, 14th Year of Changhua/Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty, Peerless)

It's modern with cultivation. Video game artist Dong Zhi is taking a break from work to travel and do some sketching, when he runs into some very strange goings on on the train he's travelling on. Which leads him to meet people from the Department of Exorcism. And things only get stranger from there.

It's fully translated 156 chapters and 17 extras.

It's danmei, and looks liks being as slow burn as Thousand Autumns and 14th Year of Changhua. I'm only on chapter 19 as yet, Dong Zhi and Long Shen have at least spoken to each other.

Setting wise and because there is some humour to it too, I think this might appeal to people who like things like Guardian (Priest) and maybe for people who aren't familiar with danmei, but like modern with magic type investigations stories, if you like Rivers of London (Ben Aaronovich) this might be worth a look.
