C-dramas I've seen at least part of and am working my way through.
Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace I rewatch this sooo much. I love it.
The Story of Minglan - adore. Haven't gotten all the way to the end but soon!
Curse of the Royal Harem - I'm only about 2 episodes in but man they already tried to entomb our main girl, Yee-lan alive.
Royal Feast - got a ways in but adhd struck. I plan to get back to it. Always made me so hungry...
The Legend of Yunxi - this one has a few more comedic moments to balance the serious. I'm enjoying.
The Sword and The Brocade - my current obsession. She's only just married in but ah! (Also nearly boiling her new husband alive.. 🤣)
Love between fairy and devil - I can only watch on YouTube so... I've only seen the first two episodes but I want more!
Consort Meng Arrives - this show is hilarious and I love it. Sadly at a certain point... ep 6 maybe? The subtitles get slow to where I just couldn't watch it 😭
Ashes of Love - 2 eps in I think...need to continue (and not just rewatch ruyi again...)
The Untamed - I actually own this on dvd. Wangxian forever ^_^
New Life Begins - just a few episodes left! So wholesome! I adore it so much.
Empresses in the Palace - enoying mostly just really confused why the put everyone's title in french which makes it harder to figure out who is being referred to.
Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty - I love it (kinda ship Su Wuming and Lu Lingfeng)
Story of Yanxi Palace - I just can't attach to this one... uncertain as to why.

Hi, I love your blog!!! Thanks so much for all of the history behind the hanfu and other fashions of China! Have you ever watched "Meng Fei jia dao"? The courtesans tend to wear flowers in the back of their hanfu. I was wondering if it was ever a historical practice, or a stylistic accent added to the drama.
Hi, I’m glad you love my blog, and thanks for the encouraging words!
I haven’t watched the Chinese drama “Meng Fei Jia Dao/萌妃驾到 (Consort Meng Arrives)”, but I did check it out. The drama takes place during the Sui and Tang dynasties (581-907), and the costumes are based on the fashions of that time period:
To answer your question, the flowers that the courtesans wear in the back of their hanfu are not historically accurate. As far as I can tell, such a practice did not exist in Chinese history. This is another one of those cases where a stylistic accent was added to the drama. It’s definitely very pretty though!:
The rest of the fashions in the drama seem to be more historically accurate. For example, the main character’s hanfu below (left) is tied and gathered much in the same way as that of a Sui dynasty figurine (right):
In addition, the hair and makeup in the drama accurately represent that of the early Tang dynasty, including the towering up-dos and huadian forehead decorations (Note - contrary to popular depiction, Tang dynasty women did not actually wear earrings):
Hope this helps!

Fei Liu AU, please :)
The premise on this one is - what if Qi Meng*did* get through to the Emperor with the message about Consort Jing being in trouble? And it got through because Fei Liu interrupted the 'bandits'; hence the title.
"The white jade seal carved with the personal sigil of the head of the Jiangzuo Alliance had opened the gate so quickly that it was a wonder the guards didn’t drop their keys, and Fei Liu was riding fast and silent for the south. He wasn’t entirely sure where the Royal Tombs were, but he’d seen the road the Grand Empress’s cortege had taken and somewhere so important must be fairly easy to find.
By daybreak, he could see tiny figures on the road ahead of him, and as he drew closer, he recognised the man who had nearly hurt Su-gege, riding with someone who was dressed like one of the palace maids. Now he knew he was on the right road, and he urged the horse faster. They were going to visit the Emperor, and the Emperor was with Nihuang-jiejie, and Su-gege had called out for Nihuang in his sleep.
The road fell into a slight dip, and he lost sight of them for a few minutes. When he came over the rise, the man was lying flat on the road, and the girl nowhere to be seen." It's in five parts - or will be, if I ever write the other two - with a different PoV for each part, but my favourite is still the opening, where I am attempting to explain to myself exactly *why* Qi Meng is in a role for which he is so eminently ill-suited:
There were dozens, if not hundreds, of men in Prince Jing's army who would gladly have taken an arrow for their commander. There was, to the best of Zhanying's knowledge, only one man who had actually done so, and Zhanying sometimes rather wished he hadn't.
Not that he wanted any harm to come to Prince Jing - Zhanying hastily made the sign against ill-fortune. But it would certainly have saved a great deal of trouble if only someone else had done it.
The whole thing had taken place about three years ago, out on the Eastern border. Zhanying himself had been commanding the south wing on the other side of the battlefield at the time, but he knew what had happened - everybody did. The general's party had been too far in advance, too fast, and had been cut off from the main force. Prince Jing's horse had stumbled, and an enemy spear had gone clear through his thigh. His standard bearer had flung himself in front of the arrow that would have finished the job, taking it full in the chest, then fought his way back to the main lines, wielding that ridiculous sabre of his one-handed, with the general over his other shoulder. He'd delivered the prince into the hands of the physicians, and then collapsed at his feet.
To Qi Meng’s credit, he had never sought reward. "No need, no need, this tough old skin must be good for something." But that hadn't prevented the general, rightly, from granting it. Neither Prince Jing nor General Zhanying were under any illusions about the man’s tactical abilities, but saving the prince’s life guaranteed the man a promotion, so a promotion he must have. By tacit agreement, they’d managed to put him in places where he could do no harm, and might even be an asset.
It had not been so bad when they were in the field, but in Jinling, finding somewhere in the duty roster was hard enough at the best of times. Sending him out to hunt for the monster had been a stroke of genius, if Zhanying did say so himself. He didn’t have much faith that Qi Meng would actually find the monster, if indeed it existed, but having Qi Meng and his squad crashing around at least made people feel safe, and might perhaps scare off a fox or two. Now, with Jing himself out of town, all troops in the city had been pulled back to Jing Manor, and even so, Zhanying had no-one of equivalent rank to spare when Consort Jing’s maid had arrived in the middle of the night, demanding an escort to the Emperor as a matter of urgency.
He was a capable bodyguard, though, and surely any maid brought up in the Inner Palace - let alone one who had managed to get out of it - would be familiar enough with the ways of intrigue that she could cope on her own once he had got her to the Emperor in one piece. Probably.
Zhanying realised he had been staring sightlessly into the lamp flame for the last five minutes and dragged his attention back to the stack of provisioning reports in front of him. Prince Jing could be back any day, and would expect a full accounting.
Unconsciously, his fingers curled again into the sign against bad luck.

Nirvana in Fire Rewatch Episode Nineteen
Events:
Meng Zhi visits Jingyan, gives him a fright by casually opening the secret passage, and pledges his support in the battle for the throne. He does not outright state that he's working with MCS but he hints it very strongly. They discuss the Chiyan case.
The Emperor stays overnight with Jing-pin and they talk about Jingyan and about Prince Yu. In the morning she gets promoted to fei.
Nihuang is sent back to Yunnan for military reasons. Mu Qing is kept in the capital as a hostage. MCS and Nihuang get upset over parting.
Gong Yu makes an attack on Xie Yu, gets wounded, and takes refuge with Banruo. This is all according to plan.
Yuwen Xuan, Prince Ling of Southern Chu, picks a fight with Mu Qing as everyone's saying goodbye to Nihaung.
Banruo and Prince Yu discuss Liyang's affair with the Chu prince. The Empress told Prince Yu she doesn't know why Liyang married Xie Yu.
Yuwen Nian, the Chu princess, spars with Jingrui. It is very portentous.
Names and titles:
Jingyan calls him 'Meng Zhi' instead of 'Meng-da-tongling' while they discuss the Chiyan case.
MCS refers to Mu Qing as xiao-Qing while talking to Nihuang in private.
The Chu princess is called Niannian by her brother, in public.
Characters:
Our first look at how Consort Jing deals with the Emperor.
Banruo and Prince Yu both dismiss Consort Jing's promotion as unimportant.
The excuse for keeping Mu Qing as a hostage is that the Grand Dowager can't bear to part with him, so she must have a grandmotherly relationship to him as well.
Mu Qing's presence in Yunnan is not militarily significant, Nihuang's is. The Chu prince teases him about that - it must be a common occurrence.
MCS tells Nihuang he wishes he was just Lin Shu again.
MCS asks after Gong Yu's injury with some concern.
Meng Zhi claps MCS on the shoulder, and Fei Liu takes offence and they nearly fight over it. This isn't significant, but it's hilarious.
Yue Niuze was number 6 on the Langya list. He recently defeated number five. He has twice fought Master Zhuo, who's number 4, and is thought to be gunning for him again.
Time:
Nihuang has been in the capital about half a year, maybe a bit more. That's regarded as a long visit.
Misc:
There's a tiny moment when the eunuch who's delivering an edict to Prince Yu angles for his favour.
The Southern Chu party doesn't travel or arrive in Jinling with nearly enough pomp - budget issues I guess.

《WITHOUT ENVY》 STORYBOARD 16
AU: concubine/sleeper agent!wwx & prince!lwj Plotlines are explained in chronological storyboards and snippets are detailed scenes which I felt more inclined to explore. All can be found in the masterlist here.
Nie Huaisang appeared unexpectedly at Nevernight. No sooner than Meng Yao's secret message arrived inquiring the identity of the spy did Wei Wuxian himself receive an unlikely visitor, Emperor Zewu's brother-in-law, Nie Huaisang. Wei Wuxian had met the young man several times during his time in Gusu, accompanying Lan Wangji to various functions. The Young Master Nie was famous for lacking in ambition and motivation to take up any gainful employment, the very antithesis of the accomplished general and consort his late brother had been. But the man that appeared at the tavern late one evening was not the lazy rich-boy Wei Wuxian remembered. Though he carried an air of ease and cavalier, his eyes were shrewd and sharp and knowing.
WWX: Meng Yao really keeps his cards close to his chest does'nt he? Wen Ruohan has no idea what he's up against.
NHS: Ah, Wei-xiong, don't be so surprised. A spy network is not a spy network without its secrets. Now, we don't have a lot of time. What I am about tell you is of the highest order.
WWX: I know about the spy. I don't know who it is. Wen Ruohan has me kept away from working fronts that would interact with Lan Zhan's forces. He trusts me but…I suppose he fears I may still have lingering sentiments. Truly I do not know the spy's identity, which is why I have decided to go -
NHS: That is all well and good, but the developments of frontline cannot be explained via missives, which is why I'm here, to ensure this information is passed only between you and I and no one else. About a month ago, Marshal Yin and the Iron Calvary had drawn Hanguang-wang's forces into the northern valleys and then simply vanished from pursuit. When Hanguang-wang realized the situation was suspicious and doubled back it was already too late. Not only were they not able to pursue the Iron Calvary, but Wen Xu's batalions have cut him off at the mouth of the valley.
WWX: A month ago, you say. He's been stranded this entire time...
NHS: Hanguang-wang's forces are strong but with that spy in their midst every battle has been a struggle. The winter dredges on, but their supplies run low. We do believe Wen Xu means to starve them in the valley. Lan Wangji's last communication was that he believed there to be a traitor in his camp. A rider managed to take it out of the valley in time, but since then all communications have ceased.
Nie Huaisang seemed to hesitate, but then continued: There are no missive stations in the valley. My ravens and doves do not know the lay of the land in that region and therefore have yielded nothing. The men we have planted inside Hanguang-wang's army to help and protect him cannot communicate with us. If we cannot rescue them, all of them will die there.
WWX: What do you need me to do?
NHS: Right now the biggest problem is we have no idea where they are, but Wen Ruohan must know the location of his armies. Do you think you can obtain Wen Xu's location in the north as well as the defence plan of his camp?
WWX: I can and I will.
Wei Wuxian obtained the information smoothly and safely. With this intel, NHS's small team of agents already close to the region was able to break into Wen Xu's camp and set fire to his storage supplies and tents, injurying some of his men. Thus Wen Xu required urgent reinforcement, giving Wei Wuxian the opportunity he needed to go to the front.
WWX: WRH will give this assignment to me, I am sure of it. Though he would prefer if I were not involved in any direct confrontation with Lan Zhan, he has no other choice now. I may not be a general, but of the remaining men left in the capital, I am the one with the most experience and familiarity with the northern terrain. And besides, I will provide him with absolute reassurance that I will return.
NHS: And how would you do that?
WWX: There is a poison, a drug, that will kill me within 21 days if I am not given the antidote. It is what us spies take when we're sent on important short term missions. There are no other poison of its kind. It is developed by the Wens - they were a clan of alchemists and healers before they were lords and kings.
Wei Wuxian took the reinforcement and supplies to the front. Along the way, he discovered via his own communication with Wen Xu that the means through which Wen Xu and his spy passed intel was trained snow owls that were indigenous to that region. As agreed upon, Nie Huaisang's small team of recon agents trailed behind Wei Wuxian's squadron until they reached Wen Xu's camp. Though they knew there was a spy amongst the Wen squandron escorting the supplies, they did not know who, since NHS was the only one with direct contact with WWX. From there on WWX managed to send out a missive to NHS, telling them of Wen Xu's plans to launch a full scale attack on Lan Wangji's army now that their reinforcements/supplies have arrived. Wen Xu relied on the information he received from his spy in Lan Wangji's army to formulate his plan of attack, but Wei Wuxian was able to intercept the snow owl before one of its timely deliveries and switched out Lan Wangji's true plan with a forged one. The forged plan of course would mislead Wen Xu to make ruinous tactical decisions that would see his army fall on the battle field.
The night before the battle, Wei Wuxian implored Wen Xu, "Your Highness, I have but one request."
"Request?"
"Tomorrow when you win your victory against Lan Wangji, perhaps you will see your way to…spare his life."
"You mean to plead on his behalf?" Wen Xu raised a quizzical brow.
"Not on his behalf." Wei Wuxian chuckled. "Lan Wangji, as a man, is somewhat of a… rare specimen, one might say. I was his plaything once. Once we conquer Gusu, I don't think yifu would object to me keeping a souvenir - a trophy, if you will - as a personal reward for my contribution."
Wen Xu rolled his eyes. "Oh, that's what your getting at. And here I thought only my little brother was the hedonistic one. Very well then."
"I thank Your Highness for your generosity. Now, I really must take my leave of you. Bixia is still expecting me in the capital."
"Why the rush? Join me tomorrow and secure your prize for yourself, unless…ah, I see. Father really is careful. How many days do you have left?"
"Still a fortnight."
"Plenty of time then. Stay until the battle's won, Wei Wuxian, and perhaps you'll get to personally escort the illustrious Hanguang-wang back to Nevernight collared and chained."
Dawn came, but the crimson sun upon Qishan Wen's banners fell in the morning light. Wen Xu, though smarter than Wen Chao, was not a natural tactician. Without the spy's information, he was no match for Lan Wangji. Wei Wuxian's interference ensured Wen Xu's capture by Gusu's forces.
Wei Wuxian's original plan was rejected by Nie Huaisang.
NHS: "Do not be a fool. Wen Ruohan will never have enough reason to order a rescue mission for you. Besides, you've ingested the poison. He only needs to do nothing and you will be dead anyways. It is far more to our advantage to capture someone Wen Ruohan cannot allow to die - his eldest son perhaps. In such case, the mole in Hanguang-wang's camp will definitely be mobilized to save his prince."
WWX: "Then I will remain on the battlefield to ensure Wen Xu's capture. With Wen Xu gone, the mole will surely reach out using the snow owls to ask for further direction. Depending on which of the Wen colonels and generals are remaining...I only need to volunteer myself for the rescue mission in order to sniff out the mole."
NHS: "Preciously. And we need Wen Xu alive. If he's dead, it will be deemed your failure and you will be unable to return to Nevernight. Without the antidote, you will be dead in 14 days."
WWX: "I understand."
NHS: "After the battle, I must depart. I've been away too long and there are matters which require my attention. You will be on your own, Wei Wuxian. Hanguang-wang is no fool. He will see this opportunity for what it is and will be prepared to unearth the mole. I have confidence that the spy will reveal himself, but whether any of you will emerge from this alive...that is up to you. None of my men within Lan Wangji's camp knows of your identity. To them you are and have always been the enemy."
WWX: "I am prepared. Best case scenario is the mole reveals himself to Lan Zhan during the rescue, but still allowing time for Wen Xu and I to escape. If Lan Zhan does not discover the mole, after I make contact, I will report his identity via the usual channels. Worst case scenario, the mole is discovered but the rescue fails and we are all captured..."
NHS: Lets hope it does not come to that. If it does -
WWX: You need not worry yourself. Let me handle it.
The plan worked. The spy's cover was made, and Wei Wuxian learned that his name was Xue Chonghai, a mole planted in Gusu for the last ten years by Marshal Yin himself. Together, they were able to orchestrate Wen Xu's rescue, but during their escape, they were quickly surrounded by Lan Wangji's soldiers. Swords were drawn, blood was spilled. Wei Wuxian was forced to kill many of Lan Wangji's best men, knowing that there was a bigger game at play. He must return to Nevernight to continue being Gusu's source of intel. For that, he must act the part of a Wen loyalist in front of Lan Wangji and Wen Xu.
Lan Wangji watched him slay Gusu's men, and Wei Wuxian knew that any lingering love that may have dwelled inside Lan Wangji's heart, in that moment, was completely reduced to ash. Of those who fell under Suibian, two were Lan Wangji's personal lieutenants, young men who once served the prince in his manor, and whom Wei Wuxian once thought of as friends. Still...it was not until he heard Lan Wangji cry out - "xiao-Yu!" - that Wei Wuxian realized the young man whose belly he had just pierced through with his sword was the prince's mianshou, the once frail and timid Mo Xuanyu. Wei Wuxian did not know that at the onset of war, Mo Xuanyu had requested to enlist in Lan Wangji's army, to do his duty to his country instead of hiding behind the walls of the harem. The shock of it all gave Wei Wuxian, Wen Xu and Xue Chonghai the opportunity to finally break free and make their escape, but the memory of Lan Wangij dropping to his knees in the blood-stained snow and cradling a dying Mo Xuanyu in his arms would be forever burned into Wei Wuxian's memory. There was no doubt in his mind that should their paths cross again, Lan Wangji would not hesitate to kill him with his own hands.
Upon his return to Nevernight, Wei Wuxian was hailed as a hero who saved Qishan's prince and heir. Even Wen Xu had grown warmer over the course of their life-and-death adventure. Wen Ruohan praised Wei Wuxian for his undying loyalty and from then on allowed him to participate in all aspects of the war, privy to any and all of Wen Ruohan's plans. During the day, Wei Wuxian accompanied him in the war room, and at night, he yielded before him beneath the canopy. Soon everyone knew that there was no one the mad Wen Ruohan trusted more than his ward Wei Wuxian.
Wen Ruohan didn't know it, but the more he trusted Wei Wuxian, the closer the war was drawing to its end.

Restless Rewatch: Nirvana in Fire, Episode 02
(Masterpost) (Other Canary Stuff)
Warning: Spoilers for All 54 Episodes!
A Cunning Plan
Let's start by checking in with the in-progress schemes. Nirvana in Fire features many, many overlapping schemes that stretch across multiple episodes.
Princess Nihuang's Marriage: Princess Nihuang is betrothed to a dead guy, and that's fine with her. If she needs tender emotional care she's got Xia Dong. Xia Dong is married to a dead guy so this works well for both of them.
The Emperor wants to marry Nihuang off, because she's got a loyal heap of troops at the southern border, and he's a paranoid old fuck, who doesn't like anyone to have the power to overthrow him. Marrying her will sort of force her to hand her troops off to her impulsive younger brother, or something.
The Emperor has a soft spot for Nihuang, however, so he's allowed her to set a bunch of impossible conditions on the marriage, including a martial arts contest. NIF is a hybrid palace drama and Wuxia drama, so there are courtesans and backstabbing and sneaky maids and sneaky eunuchs but also, people can fly.
The two main power seekers, Prince Yu and the Crown Prince, have flunkies that they want Nihuang to marry, but their flunkies suck at martial arts, so if they want her to marry one of their dudes, there will have to be cheating.
Note that Nihuang's good friends Jingrui and Yujin are taking part in the contest to marry her, which might be weird, except they both know she can beat their asses so they seem to just be joining in for fun & prestige.
The fact that she doesn't want to marry either of these loveable cuties means that she's pretty serious about staying betrothed to her first love, despite his apparent deadness.
(more after the cut!)
Recruiting Mei Changsu / Killing Mei Changsu: Team Prince Yu wants to recruit Mei Changsu. Team Crown Prince wants to recruit him or kill him, if recruiting him doesn't work.
Mei Changsu acts like this is so tedious; all he wants to do is rest. But they only want to recruit him because he and his pal Lin Chen made them believe he is the answer to their problems. Whenever Mei Changsu acts annoyed at something, it's probably something he actually orchestrated. "Pork chops again?" (secretly buys more pork chops).
The Duke Qing/ Landgrab Case: In Episode 1, the Jiangzuo Alliance protected some witnesses against Duke Qing in an enslavement/land grabbing case. It's difficult for me to find anything about historical land grabbing in China because Google is full of 21st century land grabbing information. Anyway Duke Qing works for Prince Yu, so the witnesses are (whether they mean to be or not) on The Crown Prince's side. The Emperor has an interest in this case, because land grabbing is bad, apparently, even by corrupt-emperor standards. Xia Dong is in charge of investigating.
The Chiyan Army Case: This is the big conspiracy that the entire show is about. 11 years ago, the Emperor received evidence that Prince Qi, Lin Xie (Mei Changsu's father), and the entire Chiyan army were going to rebel. This was supposedly reported by Xia Dong's husband, Nie Feng, before Lin Xie supposedly killed him. The emperor ordered executions for everybody.
Prince Jing thought this was a bunch of bullshit and didn't hesitate to say so, which got him sent off to distant regions to do army things for years at a time, and landed him a place high up on the emperor’s shit list.
The Hazelnut Pastry Scheme: This is a small scale, benevolent scheme, in which Concubine Jing will eventually stop making cookies with hazelnuts in them, because Mei Changsu is allergic to them.
Ok, that’s the scheme roundup for this episode. On with the show!
Everybody Was Kung Fu Fighting
After a quick expository chat between the Emperor and Gong Gao, laying out the reasons for the Nihuang Marriage Scheme, we go to Prince Yu’s place to watch superhot Meng Zhi, commander of the emperor's guards, whip some ass. Not, alas, literally. Despite his leather shoulder thingies and his handsome beard, and his commanding ways on a battlefield, when it comes to interpersonal relations he is pretty much a labrador retriever puppy in human form.
Meng Zhi is kicking the asses of Prince Yu’s fighters to determine if they're qualified to compete in the Marriage contest. They are not. He points out to the Prince that they can't put such terrible wimps into the competition because it will make the country’s defenses look weak.
This beatdown is observed by Prince Yu and by Xie Yu, who Prince Yu thinks is on his side. Xie is 100% on the Crown Prince's side, but is carefully hiding that fact; he has his son working for Prince Yu as part of his cover.
In determining how severe an ass kicking is, everyone talks about how many moves it takes to defeat someone, like it's chess. Meng Zhi can beat literally anyone else in the show. He's number two on the Langya List of fighters & we never meet #1.
Fe Liu Was Fast as Lightning
Mei Changsu is hanging out in the garden at Xie manor while Fe Liu jumps around. Fe Liu wants Mei Changsu to play Roblox with him, and pouts when MCS opts for staying in the garden and reading a book.
Fe Liu is utterly devoted to Mei Changsu; I really love their relationship. Fe Liu’s backstory isn't fully explained in the show, but apparently he was raised from an early age to focus on being extremely lethal, and didn't spend much time learning to talk or other skills, making him the epitome of the asynchronous/ gifted teen. Mei Changsu isn’t who raised him to be like this; MCS and Lin Chen rescued him, which is why he is now Mei Changsu’s personal murder pet.
Fe Liu is both a complete fantasy character and also a really believable teen, beautifully acted by Leo Wu, who DMBJ fans know from Tomb of the Sea, and who Xiao Zhan fans know from Battle Through the Heavens.
Fe Lui promptly gets into a fight with Meng Zhi, who's visiting Xie manor. All Fe Liu was doing was leaping about the rooftops like an assassin, but since Xie Yu is the sort of guy that a lot of people would like to kill, Meng Zhi doesn't think this is so good. They have a hilarious, entertaining fight with many, many wire-assisted moves.
They're pretty evenly matched, and Xie Yu watches them with extreme interest until Mei Changsu shows up and tells Fe Liu to stop. Xie Yu is watching because he needs to know how many dudes he should send to assassinate Mei Changsu. Answer: more. Always more.
Unfortunately, (or fortunately since it’s probably all part of MCS’s plan) Fe Liu's extreme skilz make it obvious that his boss is someone important. Mei Changsu discusses this with Jingrui and Yujin in an open-air setting where Jingrui's brother Xie Bi can totally hear them. In no time flat, father and son have reported his identity to their respective princes.
Over at Prince Yu's place, Qin Banruo and her awesome eye makeup join the party. She's Prince Yu’s advisor/manipulator, working for the (fallen) Hua kingdom, led by the (deceased) Princess Xuanji . She has a network of spies who work for her, that she deploys for Prince Yu's schemes. Her ultimate goal is not to help him, however, but just to fuck up the Da Liang Empire, which conquered the Hua.
(Nearly) Everybody Hates Jingyan
Xia Dong heads out on her assignment in the Land Grab Case, and Nihuang goes to see her off. They talk about gender expectations and how annoying it is to have to marry a dude, and briefly hang out being WLW goals with their mutual devotion, excellent fashion sense and deadly fighting abilities. Nihuang, in particular, wears the prettiest things and also stands at attention like she's commanding an army; I adore her.
They're interrupted by the arrival of Prince Jing, who is greeted cheerfully by Nihuang and eye-rollingly by Xia Dong.
He's wearing an awesome brass-and-blue armor that we never see again after this episode. It's too bad - it's a good color for him and it has a cool vampire cloak with a high collar.
Prince Jing takes the opportunity to snark at Xia Dong about her investigation and the Xuanjing Bureau’s penchant for inventing finding conspiracies, and then rides off before she can reply.
This leads Nihuang and Xia Dong to get into their chronic argument about the Chiyan Conspiracy and the Lin family, and then Xia Dong hits the road.
Prince Jing and his subordinates stand around outside the palace waiting to report to the emperor while the emperor ignores him. They get sweatier and sweatier while they wait. which makes me like the Emperor a little bit more.
Prince Yu and CP Xian are busy sucking up to the emperor as they look at a manuscript. They are a bunch of assholes and you can see that Gao Zhan isn't a fan of this bullshit.
Eventually Gao Zhan reminds/persuades the emperor to summon Prince Jing, whose brothers snark at him like a couple of 12 year old girls while he radiates manly vigor and handsomeness.
Consort Jin is bummed that she can't see Prince Jing for another 5 days, and her maid sidekick says random comforting things. This maid, Xiao Xin, is actually a little snake, who works for Qin Banruo's network. We don't learn that until sometime later.
All of the maids have this same hairstyle. If you are a westerner and you think this hairstyle is crazy, have a look at some Roman and Byzantine historic hairstyles. I'm not saying this hairstyle is NOT crazy, mind you; just that crazy hair was a feature of many, many historical empires.
Consort Jing has someone deliver her hazelnut cookies to Prince Jing; she doesn’t know about Mei Changsu yet so hazelnut is still on the menu. Nicest mom. Also smartest, helpful-est mom, as the story develops.
Suck-Up Contest
At Xie manor, Xie Bi tries to get Mei Changsu to go meet the Empress, who has stopped by with Nihuang specifically to meet him, as part of the Recruit Mei Changsu scheme. Jingrui says nope, fuck that, he's not going to be a pawn in your political games, fuck off. We get to see Jingrui being steely and righteous, which is both cool and hot. Nihuang should totally marry him.
The Empress is annoyed that Mei Changsu doesn't show up, and Nihuang is like, it's ok, I don’t actually give a fuck about meeting new men. But I did want to meet his murder puppy Fe Liu.
Grand Princess Liyang says they don’t need to bother meeting pugilists, despite her son being one and her supposed best friends/co-parents also being pugilists.
Grand Princess Liyang will probably be glad Mei Changsu didn’t come to her little party, once she realizes what tends to happen when Mei Changsu comes to a party.
Then we go to the suitor tournament, in which everyone more or less sucks.
The princes really want to go over to Mei Changsu’s balcony to meet him, and they have a hilarious silent interaction where they both try not to be the first one to move. They finally cave, and go together.
Then they compete to see who can be the most cringe and blow the most smoke up Mei Changsu's ass.
They ply him with gifts and flattery, which he mostly manages to resist.
Cookie Time with Granny
Then they get summoned to go meet the grand empress, who is (I think) the mother of the previous emperor, the grandmother of the current emperor, and the great grandmother of basically every highborn character of the current generation, including Nihuang and Yujin, although it’s not clear where they sit in the family tree. Historically, cousin marriage - particularly of maternal cousins - was no big whoop in China, so it's not surprising that a lot of nobles would share a great-grandmother.
The Grand Empress is a sweet lady with dementia. She can’t figure out who the hell anyone is. First-time viewers feel the same way.
Her dementia is pretty well depicted, unlike a lot of TV dementia, or at least it matches up to my experiences with my own elders. She remembers the distant past more vividly than recent times; when she understands who’s in front of her she connects with them emotionally, but she falls off track easily. And she projects the identities of people she misses onto people who are around her.
Like many other grannies, no matter who is visiting, she wants them to 1. get married 2. produce offspring 3. eat something, you’re so skinny
When Mei Changsu meets Granny she immediately calls him Lin Shu, either because she recognizes him or because she really misses Lin Shu, or both. She calls Nihuang over and joins their hands, and Mei Changsu grabs onto Nihuang's hand and holds it for a while.
Everyone thinks it's adorable that Granny has dementia and is confused about that guy who was horribly killed, except Nihuang, who was already checking Mei Changsu out and is somewhat verklempt. She might have to revise her anti-man feelings a little bit.
Everyone leaves, and Nihuang hits up Mei Changsu to take a walk with her, casually mentioning that she could have his hand cut off for touching her, but since she's not in the mood, he's ok.
She prods a bit to find out what he's doing in town and what he's up to. “Do you have a girlfriend? Like a serious girlfriend or just a stalker who works for you?” She asks him which of the two princes he's going to support, but they’re interrupted by a eunuch beating a slave child. That’s the price you pay for trying to have a date in the palace, I guess.

“Nirvana in Fire” watch summary
Spoilers NOT Welcome: (I’m posting these to help myself keep track of where I am, not so people can spoil things for me please and thanks.)
NiF Recap Eps 19 & 20
Meng Zhi and Prince Jing bring the sad backstory hours as Meng Zhi pledges to join Team Jing (which is secretly team MCS) and the duo talk about the Inciting Incident and the Way Things Were Before.
Over in her Palace, Concubine Jing (with an assist from Head Eunuch Gao Zhan) tries her hand at some subtle politics to help her son.
The Emperor picks up on how awesome Concubine Jing is while he's there, and promotes her to actual Consort rank... unfortunately he also eases up on Crown Prince's house arrest by moving him from the not-so-good-palace to the very comfy Eastern Palace to continue his house arrest.
Because the Emperor's a jerk who cares not for the lives of his people unless they have a lot of money and influence. Just like 98% of the gentry.
Meanwhile, The Envoys of Southern Chu arrive, including the cute yet enigmatic Princess... who unfortunately puts the show over it's “Amazing Lady” quota, so the Emperor send Duchess back to her station by the boarder.
Duchess's Goodbye party at the gates are interrupted by the Southern Chu envoys, who take the chance to sew a bit of mischief, and Princess Nian nian has a spar with Jingrui.
The gates aren't the only place tensions are raised though, as Fei Liu and Meng Zhi have a tense stare down in MCS's courtyard.
Elsewhere Gong Yu sets her own part of the oncoming plan into motion just in time for Jingrui's birthday party.
While most of the Main Cast gathers for Jingrui's party, FeiLiu decides to have a good time exploring the Ning manor by himself.
Xia Dong kicks the party off by challenging Zhuo Dingfeng to a fight, looking to prove his martial arts are linked to the murders from New Years. The two display some outstanding skills but eventually call it a “draw.”
Gong Yu takes the next act with some music, which brings tears to several eyes, though seemingly for different reasons as Grand Princess Liyang seems to struggle with a serious case of the Personal Trauma Sads.
And then the Southern Chu envoys arrive to get the Jingrui Traumatising portion of the evening going.
Their Swords master Yue Xizue challenges Zhuo to a fight, one he really can't get away with refusing because 'honour'... or something, but the Marquis escalates the situation by calling in his troops.
Zhuo tries to pretend he still has some honour, but calls in sick halfway in with an injured wrist. (MengZhi and XiaDong spot his bullshit from the sidelines.)
Meanwhile, FeiLiu finds the swords of the Marquis armoury kinda lame, and takes up a brief musical career playing tunes on the bow strings with a knife. (He's so talented.)
Elsewhere, Prince Yu decides he rather enjoyed crashing MCS's tea party, and prepares his troops to join Jingrui's birthday celebrations.
Back at the party, the Southern Chu's prince decides to cause problems, and Princess Nian nian drops a huge truth bomb: Jingrui is the son of neither Zhuo or Marquis, but the son of Prince Sheng of Southern Chu, born from a pre-marital affair with Liyang.
But the shocks don't stop there, because Gong Yu has some news of her own: the death of Jingrui's birthday twin was no accident, but a 'wrong target' assassination orchestrated by Marquis Ning himself.
The news drives a wedge between Jingrui's two families, and XieYu once again attempts to escalate things by calling for his soldiers, but FeiLiu's fun leaves him without archers, and Yu is outside.

What I Watched February 2023
the animation was pretty and parts were good/fun but the overall message was...really, really bad. Sadly a disappointment overall.
a very fun movie, they really went for the “dreamlike” especially with transitions and Alice seems quite happy to go along with things. A few of the masks were a bit horrific but not as bad as I’d feared.
fun re-watch
Episodes
mmm watched episodes 1-5 and the princes are so annoying, not sure if I’ll continue
watched episode 1 and it was hilarious
would have watched more than 5 episodes but the subs aren’t synched properly so it got to where I had to give up. Very sad.
watched eps 1 & 2 and really enjoyed them. Hopefully will be able to watch the rest soon.
yes I’m re-watching this again, I’m at about episode 15 I think? Sooooo good!
Have also watched a bit of Dragon Ball Season 2

Hello, sorry if this has been asked before, but I'm new to Chinese dramas. The drama I'm watching is 萌妃驾到 (Mengfei Comes Across) and I noticed some of the ladies had floral tattoos on their back. Would this (tattooing) happen to be a part of the time period or just a costume/style choice for the show? Thank you!
Hi! The tattooing, as far as I know, is just a costume/style choice for the show. You can read more in my previous replies on “Consort Meng Arrives” here, here, and here ^^

accidentally made another witcher oc last night and can’t stop thinking about her so i had to write this!!! her failed execution hehe 🤭 her name is orla and she’s a nilfgaardian sorceress, a bit like fringilla being used by emhyr... “emhyr’s curiosity” more than an actual ally. i’m gonna steal the unused “yennefer betrays the lodge” plot because it’s dumb and use it for orla 😝 either phil kills her or she flees and emhyr kills her but yeah she’s got a very bad ending! at least one of my witcher oc’s has to have one and she’s kinda... not doing anything to help herself lol (also her fc now is natalie dormer.... maybe will be changed though 🤫 now it’s eva green...)
Novigrad was never quiet. It was a cultural melting pot of people from all walks of life, whether they be human, elven, dwarven... Rich folk and common alike. Even the supernatural found it difficult to stay away.
Geralt hadn’t left since his arrival two weeks ago. The city was good for a witcher, business wise. There were no end to mysteries folk wanted solved, rumors of supernatural beasts and murders in broad daylight were prime contracts - oft the best and most steady coin a witcher could ask for.
The marketplace was busy at the best of times, but this afternoon they’d grown exceedingly loud, so much so that Geralt could no longer ignore it.
He could hear the shouting, the jeering, and the laughter from several streets away. It was only as he approached the entrance did he hear something else: muffled sobs of those in the crowd hiding their faces, unable to look.
Guardsmen pushed past, their shoulders holding up piles of wood. They marched to the area just outside of Vivaldi’s Bank, dumping the logs on an already large pile. It struck him then that he was to witness yet another execution, most likely of a sorceress. He just hoped it wasn’t one he knew, his mind going to old, and perhaps best forgotten, acquaintances. Philippa, Margarita… Fringilla…
A man Geralt recalled from his first visit to Novigrad appeared on the platform. He was brandishing a rolled up piece of parchment in one fist and an unlit torch in the other. Caleb Menge.
“Good people of Novigrad,” He bellowed out to the bustling crowd. “Our quest to rid this fair city of it’s magical pests has developed once again, bringing a new success to your ears and sights. For too long, you’ve lived under the thumb of wicked sorcery and those who abuse it. Radovid stands for it no longer!”
The crowd cheered, several bumping into Geralt as they jumped up and down in glee. A woman collapsed on to the floor in floods of tears and went largely ignored by those around her until a young man rushed to her side.
“Tonight, I present to you a tarnished jewel in the crown of the Nilfgaardian Empire,” The man grinned, a sight that turned Geralt’s stomach. “A snake sent from Emhyr himself, to slither into your very homes and do his malevolent bidding - tearing our city to pieces for nought more than cruel entertainment. A sorceress of vile deeds, an enchantress and thief who consorts with demons.”
The noise around Geralt became even more unbearable, as more people joined the gathering and he found himself tunnelled in, moving closer to the front of the crowd. He pulled his hood up, hoping to conceal his identity to Menge who could surely spot his face.
“And I give you my word, she will burn!”
A woman with a plain cloth sack over her head appeared behind Menge, two guardsmen holding her arms with an ironclad grip. She seemed to be cooperating well, being the one to lead the guards rather than the other way around.
“I present to you: Orla var Malhoun!” Menge roared.
The plain cloth sack was ripped from her head and Geralt had the immediate displeasure of recognising her. Her dark hair was stuck to her forehead, frizzy and unevenly cut as if hacked off with a knife. Her eyes were dark, bruised and unreadable from this distance but one clearly swollen shut. Her lips much the same - puffy and bleeding, a several tracks of dried blood resting on her dirty chin. Her frame was gaunt and battered, but Geralt would know her face from anywhere.
Orla var Malhoun, once a beloved curiosity of Emhyr, bloody and broken before a jeering crowd.
Her lips contorted and at first, Geralt braced himself for the sight of her throwing up. She looked as though she would collapse before she reached the pyre, and those around him would surely riot for being robbed of her slow and painful death.
Instead, her eyes roamed the crowd fleetingly and her expression quickly developed into a smirk. She threw back her head, cackling loudly, her bony shoulders shaking.
Not as broken as I thought, Geralt mused, unsure if he should feel sympathy or pride. Or maybe she’s finally lost it. Not even sorceresses are immune to prolonged torture.
Menge took a step back and slapped her across the face, her entire body crumbling as she leant back into the hold of the guards.
“Hold your tongue, bitch!” He snarled, turning to the guards behind her. “Put her up on the pyre.”
She was pushed up on to the ledge, her head lolling against her chest and she offered no resistance as her hands and feet were bound to the pole. Geralt grew frustrated.
He’d expected she’d die one day at the hands of another, for Orla had never done well at staying out of other people’s (or nation’s) business, but not like this: meek, not memorable nor remotely shocking. He expected hell to break lose, to give the crowd a show, as awful as that sounded to him as he thought on it. But what could he do? Orla’s life wasn’t worth his own, nor his quest to find Ciri. He’d sooner kiss a drowner than let Ciri be captured by the Wild Hunt because he had to save Orla var Malhoun, of all people. Of all sorceresses.
Wanting a show, a guardsman poked her side with his spear. She stirred, her head raising to lean against the pole.
Menge turned to address her.
“Do you confess upon this pyre, your treacherous abilities and loyalties to Nilfgaard?”
She said nothing, gazing at him impassively with a lazy smile on her face.
“Do you, Orla var Malhoun, confess to the crimes you have been found guilty of?” He pressed, louder and angrier.
“I confess to everything, you fat-headed idiot,” Orla laughed. “But I have no guilt to speak of, only pride and longing.”
She turned her attention to the crowd, the booing only seeming to better her mood. Her one good eye shone in the light and her broken teeth glittered.
“Glory to Nilfgaard, and to the White Flame Dancing on the Graves of his Foes!” She shouted with mirth. The crowd retorted with louder boos and rotten fruit, several tomatoes staining her already soiled white dress. “You’ll all die on your knees, you rotten Northern pigs! Fuck you all!”
Orla snarled the last part, the joy now gone from her face. “All who oppose him will fall, and you will suffer for this humiliation! I will not die, I will return! With blood!”
“Shut the fuck up,” A guardsman called as another threw a lit torch and the flames began the crackle. Smoke was thrown up into the air, and it tickled Geralt’s throat.
Orla thrashed against her her restraits, wiggling her bare feet and shoulders as the flames grew around her but kept suspiciously quiet. The smoke had become so thick, Geralt could no longer see her and he gritted his teeth in annoyance, knowing she wouldn’t go out like this: utterly silent. The guardsmen seemed equally as annoyed by her silence, bringing out several large fans likely to increase the strength of the flames and waft away the smoke for easier viewing. As they did this, a distinct smell reached Geralt’s nose. It smelt of… saltpeter? Who would be making a bomb at an execution?
He narrowed his eyes, using his witcher senses to hone in on the scent. A red trail of a smoke-like substance appeared before him, snaking through the crowd between the throngs of people. Geralt followed it.
Pushing past spectators, he found himself at the edge of the crowd. There were several empty stalls, devoid of produce and products, that the trail had touched. He continued on, passing by stragglers of the crowd, until he reached a heavy wooden door just outside of the marketplace. A beggar sat outside on the dirt, a misshapen hat on her head and an empty cloth bag at her feet. Her clothes were torn and resembled potato bags tied together with rope. One of Novigrad’s many forgotten folk.
“You know who lives here?” Geralt asked her.
“Depends,” She answered, not sparing him a look.
“Guessing you want coin.”
“Aye. Several.”
He sighed. “5 Crowns enough?”
“Not a chance.”
Geralt tossed 10 Crowns in the cloth bag. The beggar checked and seemed pleased by his generosity, turning up to face him.
She jabbed her thumb behind her shoulder. “Lady named Hedwig lives there. Word is, she’s a witch.”
Geralt didn’t have time to react. A loud explosion sounded from the marketplace, the ground rumbling and sparks of light shooting up into the sky. He heard screams before the thunderous footfall of a hundred odd spectators drowned it out and people poured out from the entrance. He pushed himself against the wall to avoid being trampled and looked down at the beggar woman, seeing she’d already fled.

MDZSBURB
I've settled on Classpects and moons and Lands but I've still got two distinct possibilities for timeline. Here's one of them.
It starts sometime in the chaos that should be leading up to the Sunshot Campaign but won't, exactly, in this timeline. It starts slowly, subtly even -- maybe there are meteors and maybe there aren't, but there's no rain of them, and people are already disappearing for months at a time. They could easily just be dead. There's no Game structure to lure them into it -- it just takes them, with little warning, and they have to learn the rules afterwards.
Maybe it's Wen Ruohan triggering it somehow -- he certainly tries to take advantage of it once he understands what's happening (as much as it's possible to understand anyway). He's powerful and cunning and he gets himself and some of his into the Medium, to try to seize the power there, and they do impressively well. For a while. He doesn't really understand how to deal with an environment where he is defined as a superfluous obstacle. Skaia has chosen its protagonists and will not be swayed.
I'm not sure of the full order entry, or the exact circumstances under which they're all taken, but I know a lot of it.
Wen Ning is taken early. He's Page of Life, a Derse dreamer, of the Land of Chains and Flowers. He is probably the Hero Least Traumatizing To Consorts.
Wen Qing follows not long after, and she was one of the very few to actually anticipate it. She's Seer of Doom, after all. --And she even understood it would be wise and safest to take her close kin with her, as little sense as that seemed to make, so she has quite a lot of company in the Land of Silk and Needles. She's a Derse dreamer, too, and wakes up fast to look for her brother.
Nie Huaisang goes pretty early, too, completely unobserved, out of somewhere that was supposed to be safe. He's just missing, no clues. (NMJ is Very Unhappy About This.) In fact, of course, the Bard of Void is sound if not safe in the Land of Wind and Whispers. He's not very happy about it either, but at least the current situation enables more unconventional fighting. Derse, again.
Jiang Cheng is snatched out of the ruins of Lotus Pier (before he can get his core destroyed). It is the opposite of subtle. The good news is that a handful of not-yet-executed disciples were hauled along to the Land of Mist and Causeways, too, and attending Wens helpfully were not. The less good news is he ends up with his mother for a sprite. It's stressful. He's Knight of Rage, and yet another Derse dreamer.
Wei Wuxian has his core intact but still runs afoul of Wen Chao and flunkies and still gets thrown into the Burial Mounds. A rather regrettably large chunk of the Burial Mounds accompanies him to the Land of Chimes and Ashes, leading to his not actually realizing he's in another dimension for about a month until he manages to get out through the borders which are at least not warded. He's still developed demonic cultivation, although in the end he uses Chenqing less for controlling corpses and more for his new powers as Rogue of Time. --The corpses do come up some, though.
I think at this point we finally get a Prospit dreamer with Lan Wanji, Mage of Space. He's not completely alone like some of the others, but he was off roaming. He may end up bringing some random people along to the Land of Rabbits and Frogs, but no one terribly interesting.
I'm not sure if there's any feasible way for Jiang Yanli to figure out where the hell her brothers have disappeared to and how to trigger the thing that will take her after them, but she's Witch of Hope, so maybe. She rounds out the Derse dreamers from the Land of Earth and Sky. Don't have more details here yet.
Next up we have a spectacular exit from Jin Zixuan, accompanied by way too much of Koi Tower, way too many hangers-on, and both his parents. It's frankly a nightmare. He spends as much time as possible out exploring the Land of Twists and Feathers. He's Heir of Light, although he's not particularly good at it. --Both his parents will end up sprites eventually, but he's fortunate enough that his is his mother. Prospit.
Depending on what canon we're going with Mianmian may or may not be in fairly close proximity, but either way she's next. Maid of Breath, and I can't say more about her circumstances of entry but I can say she's the only candidate for a Breath player in this horrifically unfree and entangled group (with the possible exception of WWX but I need him for Time).
I'm not sure what order the next two are in. By this time they definitely know something bizarre and catastrophic is going on at least.
Lan Xichen is Sylph of Heart, Land of Leaves and Hindsight. He probably gets pulled out of the Cloud Recesses survivors' camp; he probably has a lot of company; his sprite is probably either his father or Lan Qiren and I'm honestly not sure which would be worse. Prospit.
Nie Mingjue is Prince of Blood and probably gets yanked off the battlefront somewhere. (He's one of the top candidates for Wen Ruohan to follow into the Medium.) Prospit. He is arriving late if not last and a lot of other people understand the rules here a lot better than he does and he does not enjoy it.
And, finally, Meng Yao. Thief of Mind (I wanted to give him Vriska's Classpect but I was running low on Aspects and I didn't think JZX could carry Mind). I have no idea when and where he is when he falls off the map and into the Land of Mirrors and Stains. Has he become a spy yet? Did he even get a chance to start working for NMJ? Did he meet LXC? Had he fallen down the stairs yet? Which Meng Yao is being asked to become a hero? This is obviously a very important question but I do not know the answer. --But regardless of the answer he ends up with JGS as a sprite, and then probably kills him.
So anyway there's quite a bit of carrying on and fighting and reunions and dealing with Wen Ruohan's doomed but troublesome power grab, and it all ends up… I don't know. Everyone's alive, anyway.
—The other possibility is similar in its mechanics but kicks off right about when WWX absconds with the Wen remnants — they end up in LOCAA instead of the Burial Mounds, or possibly the Burial Mounds immediately followed by LOCAA. And then there's increasing chaos and confusion that's all blamed on the completely unlocatable Yiling Patriach (despite demonic cultivation's lack of association with giant meteors) as everyone else gets grabbed up over the next… while. (Not too long a while, though, because I have limits and I am not throwing JYL into a Game with an infant, let alone pregnant.)
