How many relationships did Robespierre have and who were they? if you can tell a little about it

I’m currently working on compiling as much information as possible about Robespierre’s different relationships. Those I’ve done so far are:

The relationship between Robespierre and Saint-Just

The relationship between Robespierre and Desmoulins (btw, comparing the notes on this post and the SJ one, I think it’s pretty clear who has already won the shipping contest currently on…)

The relationship between Robespierre and Pétion (planning to remake this one)

I’m not an expert on any relationship beyond these yet, but when it comes to people of which it is established Robespierre was the personal friend (bc were we to talk about people he is confirmed to have had any form of contact/relationship at all with we would of course be here all night) this is basically what I’ve got so far (feel free to send an individual ask about those you consider more interesting, then it will be easier to give a more satisfying answer):

Pre-revolution

Robespierre and his five years younger brother Augustin grew up together at their grandparents’ house, but from 1769-1781 and 1781-1787 respectively the two spent the majority of the year studying in Paris and consequently saw very little of one another. Once the revolution rolled around Augustin came to visit his brother two times before being elected a deputy and permanently moving to Paris in 1792. We have several letters from Augustin in Arras to Maximilien in Versailles/Paris (but none the other way around). The two were evidently close, and when Maximilien was ordered arrested on July 27 1794, Augustin asked to share his fate.

After the death of their mother and disappearance of their father in 1764, Robespierre and his two years younger sister Charlotte grew up seeing each other only once a week until the former headed to Paris in 1769. After he graduated in 1781, he and Charlotte lived with each other up until the opening of the Estates General, after which Charlotte didn’t see him again for three years (save a short trip he made to Arras in 1791). According to Paul Villiers, who served as Maximilien’s secretary for a time, he sent a quarter of his fees to ”a sister in Arras whom he held a lot of affection for” during this period. In 1792 Charlotte moved to Paris with her younger brother where the two moved in with Maximilien’s host family. The three siblings got into a conflict and were seperated as enemies, different sources giving us different answers regarding exactly what for.

During his time as a lawyer in Arras, Robespierre and his siblings were close to his fellow lawyer Antoine Buissart and his family. They kept this contact up during the revolution, and we have several letters exchanged between Maximilien, Augustin and Antoine conserved. They did however eventually fall out with one another due to ”the terror” carried out in Arras in the spring of 1794, and after Robespierre’s execution Buissart was quick to abandon and denounce him. 

During his time as a student at the college of Louis-le-Grand it would appear Robespierre gained a friend/school rival in the future dramatist and man of letters Beffroy de Reigny. In 1786 Robespierre sent him two of his most recent works to insert in his journal, Beffroy responding by celebrating his success and saying he ”perfectly remembers the role played at the College by his amiable study companion; a talent like his is not meant to be forgotten.” He did however quickly grow to dislike the revolution, and in works written in the years following Robespierre’s death he claimed to have never been his friend.

The Revolution

Robespierre and Danton were good friends, or at least good brothers in arms. In 1792 Danton offered his ”dear friend” a job at the Revolutionary Tribunal, and the next year Robespierre adressed what is probably the most sentimental of his conserved letters to Danton, consoling him over the loss of his wife and telling him ”I love you (tu) more than ever, until death.”

Robespierre had a good relation with the Roland couple, Mme Roland writing in her memoirs that she thought him ”an honest man” and that they sometimes dined together. They eventually fell out with each other over the war question, but not before Manon had written Robespierre a letter asking for a meeting so that they could sort out their differences.

Robespierre was also at first good friends with the ”girondin” and fellow National Assembly member François Buzot, who in his memoirs wrote that Robespierre had told him ”I esteem you, because I know you well” even in 1793. In his defense (1793), the girondin Gensonné wrote that ”In 1791 and 1792, Robespierre had the most intimate liasons with Pétion, Buzot and Roland, how can he accuse them today without accusing himself?”

Robespierre and Georges Couthon quickly got to know each other after the latter’s arrival in Paris in September 1791, although it’s possible they started out on less than friendly terms. We have a letter from Robespierre to Couthon dated August 9 1792 where he tells him he ”anxiously await news of your (votre) health.[…] May you soon return to your homeland and we await with equal impatience your return and your recovery.”

Robespierre was also good friends with Philippe Le Bas. The best source for their relationship is the memoirs of the latter’s wife Élisabeth, where she numerous times has the two say flattering things about one another. On 9 thermidor, Le Bas, like Augustin, volonteered to share Robespierre’s fate.

Robespierre was good friends with Collot d’Herbois, who also knew his host family (this can be observed via letters from Collot to Robespierre dated November 23 and December 1, and a letter from him to Maurice Duplay dated December 5). They eventually fell out with each other in 1794, but it’s unclear exactly when and why. 

Robespierre had a friend in his doctor Joseph Souberbielle. In his Histoire de la Révolution française (1869) the historian Louis Blanc reported Souberbielle to have spoken warmly about him even decades after his death.

During his time on the Committee of Public Safety, Robespierre wrote a list containing the names of around 115 men he described as ”patriots with more or less talent,” many of which held (thanks to his list?) important functions. On first place on the list we find Martial Hermann, president of the revolutionary tribunal and later chairholder of the Commission of Civil Administration, Tribunals and Claude-François Payan, head of the Paris commune, who are both proven to sometimes have turned directly to Robespierre regarding things that concerned the entire Committee of Public Safety (1, 2, 3, 4), as well as François Dumas, president of the Revolutionary Tribunal April-July 1794 and Jean-Baptiste Coffinhall, judge at said tribunal, who both public procecutor Fouquier-Tinville and Barère, Billaud-Varennes and Collot-d’Herbois after thermidor would claim to everyday have gone home to Robespierre to discuss the tribunal’s upcoming affairs. If Robespierre was the personal friend of the four is harder to say, but all of them would nevertheless be executed as his ”accomplices.”

Another person on the list is the young Marc-Antoine Jullien who served as representative on mission 1793-1794 and often turned to Robespierre directly when reporting about things going on (according to From Jacobin to Liberal: Marc Antoine Jullien 1775-1848 (1993) by R.R Palmer: ”of Jullien’s known letters written during this period twenty-one were addressed to Robespierre, but eighteen were addressed to the CPS as a whole, and twenty-nine to four other members of the Committee.”) He was arrested right after thermidor and would deny having had any association with Robespierre, but it would still be more than a year before he was released. His mother Rosalie Jullien was her too a big admirer of Robespierre and dined with him a couple of times.

Another one of the people on the list is Jean Charles Guislain Mathon, an arragois childhood friend of Robespierre who, after the siblings fell out with each other, offered Charlotte asylum at his house ”in spite of [the brothers’] protests.” She moved in with him after their execution and stayed there for the rest of her life.

the original title for this fic was the (possibly) last summer, from this margaret atwood poem. this has been true for a couple months, since it was just a fic idea that i probably wasn't going to write. i was so excited for it! i love They are hostile nations & i haven't gotten to use it for a fic title yet! and i Do still very much recommend it both qua poem and as a pairing for this fic

(i got the fic idea after the first vitalasy stream on s6; it changed from "fic idea i probably won't write" to "yeah okay i need to write this" after the second one)

but then i was struggling with Writing Happy Things and batting around ideas of what specifically they're doing in the fic and got the idea for a Funnest Room Competition Take Two, and soooo recently i had been thinking and talking about the vitalasy & zam conversation i transcribed, where zam is convincing vitalasy to come down a 1x1 hole and vitalasy mentions the moment from s4 where zam jumped down a similar 1x1 in order to kill herself on dripstone and vitalasy followed immediately and died as well, and zam says It’s different this time, there’s water and I’m down here. the way that this is a physical representation of the ways it's different: in s4, when zam wanted to prove her love to vitalasy, she killed herself, in a microcosm of so many of the problems in their relationship. in s6, she tries to recreate something that vitalasy loved. it's safe; there's nothing there to kill herself or anyone else. you can't take fall damage or die on dripstone. there's water. and-- in the original Funnest Room, vitalasy's room had a secret entrance which led to a room with a lectern. the room with the lectern (and what was hidden behind the lectern) is, i think, familiar enough to all eclipse fans that i don't need to belabor the point too much, but it's a similar concept: making their base again, but it's different this time. no dripstone, no secret passages. they're trying again, but this time they're doing it without the problems that tear them apart. so. new title

btw have new fans seen the OG funnest rooms. they're so incredibly ugly. i love them so dearly. look at these and know that they all three have even more details that i couldn't get in the screenshot, such as "an end crystal" and "concrete powder being repeatedly shot up and then falling back down"

look at them. aren't they wonderful. anyway back to the fic

i...sort of considered either "zam-and-subz conversation about eclipse" or "zam coming out" having more of a presence. but it was never more than sort of; i was pretty solid early on that i didn't want this to be a reconciliation fic, i wanted it to be a post-reconciliation "tentatively learning to love each other again" fic. all the big dramatic moments are in the past. now: a moment of happiness, together.

something i wanted to make clear is that it's a very temporary moment of happiness. vitalasy is only on the server for very short periods of time. zam and subz have other plotlines and alliances going on (or, in subz's case, lifesteal public) that they can't & don't want to drop. the server itself is going to end. but....it's still real? and what it symbolizes in their relationship, that they're repairing it and getting closer as friends again, is going to keep being real.

the idea to intersperse some of the most painful moments of s4 is one i went back and forth on a bit but eventually decided in favor. they have a lot of very genuinely hurtful history that is sort of coloring every interaction. in the present day, they're able to move forward from it, but it's not...small? it was really bad, they all hurt each other a lot.

related to moving forward. something i said on discord about this fic: "i have written two Not A Fix-Its that do canon divergence from s4. i have broadly maintained my stance that they are doomed from the moment they got together & you cannot fix them. but it turns out that you can fix them and the way to fix them is by going forward instead of backwards."

uhhhhh i'm not sure how obvious this is but all three of them are sort of on high alert trying to Be Careful and Manage everything so everyone stays happy and nothing explodes horrifically. this is most obvious from vitalasy bc he's the one whose pov we're in but rest assured: zam and subz are doing it too. this will get better with time as they get used to each other & nothing continues to happen.

which: i do think that in fact it will not explode horrifically! not only have all of them grown as people since s4, there's also a thing of... eclipse federation only went as bad as it did in s4 because their long-term season goals were fundamentally opposed and vitalasy had important reasons that he could not tell zam the full truth about things. neither vitalasy nor subz have long-term season goals in s6; none of them have material reasons to lie to each other or keep secrets. i think they'll be fine.

change vs staying the same is another big thing. subz isn't a builder anymore, zam is. zam's a girl. but also there's the same hammock, the same familiar friendship. the things that are the same, the things that are different. once again this ties into the title & where it came from & why it applies to the fic.

uhhhhh zam gives subz slime blocks bc they were the walls of subz's funnest room. what zam may not know is that they were ALSO the walls of the post-s4 vitalasy&subz house. anyway that's a thing

vitalasy's cat isn't referred to by name because its name is vitalapuss and vitalasy is a PG streamer who tends to avoid the name. sorry vitalasy.

vitalasy smiles a LOT in this fic and there are two references to vitalasy's face hurting from smiling. this is because i watch vitalasy pov when he streams on s6 and when he puts on facecam he is ALWAYS smiling so so so big and occasionally mentioning how his face hurts from smiling so much. lifesteal makes him happy 🥺 (this in turn makes me happy)

similarly: vitalasy cubito often spins when Particularly happy and i so rarely get to include this bc i usually write vitalasy miserable. but he gets to spin here!!!

behind the scenes fact: i wrote the entire first draft of this fic a week ago in a single 6-hour sitting, from 11pm to 5am, while incredibly sick and off-and-on feverish. and then a week later (today) i did a bit of vod review, did 50 words of edits, and posted it. halfway through writing the first draft vitalasy tweeted that he was going to upload again accompanied by a gif of eclipse federation. i take nothing but Ws forever

discord message by me at 3am: "i cant believe he did this. he Heard me writing eclipse federation happy ending and was like Not to worry. i will make this real for you"

also i mentioned this earlier but i struggle SO MUCH with writing happy things. i'm proud of myself for both this fic and my previous one (memory foam, the tgcf fic, not the previous lifesteal fic) for being happier than my usual? in both of those fics there's still very much The Past Horrors but i'm expanding my repertoire! and from the reaction i think i did a good job of it ^w^

for eclipse fed particularly though there's also a thing of.... the reason i didn't see myself writing happy things for them wasn't just bc i'm bad at writing happy things, it's also bc they were doomed when they were together and incredibly unhappy when they fell apart and i couldn't imagine a path from where they started to a happy ending. certainly not in s4, and s5 didn't really give me hope there, either, with zam refusing to talk to vitalasy about the previous season, and then with subz and vitalasy both banning themselves off the server and quitting content creation (cutting off the possibility of any future reconciliation or even further interaction within the context of the lore). and then, well, s6 happened. vitalasy and subz are back; vitalasy and zam had a genuine conversation about s4 which went better than i could have imagined. this happy ending hasn't happened for them, and it may never, but i have genuine hope for them and the future of their relationship on lifesteal in a way i never have before, even when they were together the first time. i'm-- genuinely, truly so glad to have been wrong.

Life has been very busy these past few months but is moving in a hopefully good and definitely exciting direction.

In this particular order (if memory serves correctly) I've:

decided to move halfway across the continent

marked the one year anniversary of the worst time of my life

had other people mark the one year anniversary of the worst time of my life with all that entails

quit my job (I'd been planning that for a while)

had my boss and hr offer to let me go instead and half my notice period to two months (aka 'give' me more money and facilitate my move, yay pity)

started looking for a place to live and organizing my move

found a new job in a slightly different corner of halfway across the continent (I start July 1st)

got my request for citizenship approved (epic timing guys)

found a place to live in an awesome area (I will be able to do all my errands on foot and my new job is only a short bike ride away)

told everyone I was leaving for sure

signed the paperwork to have my uncle in law take over the place here

had my cousin offer to move my stuff with his remodeled fire engine in exchange for gas and (bridge) tolls

did all the paperwork in the universe ever

started saying my goodbyes for now (I still have lots of family and friends etc here so I'll be back a lot)

had my cousin tell me he'd make a bro trip out of the move because his friends really wanted to see a basic bridge, and room and board plus no girls was all the compensation they needed for getting to carry my boxes

said thanks but no thanks to citizenship (sorry Wille, you'll always be my King)

was asked if I minded the move taking a bit longer because the guys wanted to stop for totally unplanned soccer (a not insignificant part of their motivation if not a deciding factor I dare say)

did more move and job leaving planning and paperwork

welcomed, fed and watered a bunch of guys really into soccer bridges and very disappointed I didn't have more boxes they could compete carrying

prepared a big lunch basket and said goodbye to said guys and my boxes

sat down to write this list wondering where I should celebrate midsummer (aka do I want to travel back and forth to get everything ready or stay until it's time to hand in my work laptop etc)

Phew, yes. Also a million other things which won't come to mind right now. Thank you to everyone who left me such kind messages btw. I appreciate them so much but am still learning to respond to kindness and compliments without awkwardness. They nevertheless give me life.

In more interesting news to everyone here I've also done a lot of writing.

Mostly on One Wild Summer, which has already grown into a monster, but I've been writing the exciting parts later on and still guesstimate a 15k or so stretch which needs bridging to get to all the fun stuff I've already written.

but also on The Prince and the Barista and As Long as We Have Each Other. I only need to make it coherent and once again fill the gap to where I stopped posting.

plus *cue exasperated sighs* I'm also 9k+ into a new fic! The (once more) absolutely most self-indulgent thing I've ever written in this fandom and something I swore I never would turn into a proper fic. Expect the prologue for that (which was meant to be 500 words and not 5k) soonish.

Everything else including regular updates not before mid to late July though I think. Because moving and starting a new job and life means busy times and while I can write scribble down connected sentences with half a mind, I can't beta read and edit with half a mind.

osamu dazai, demon prodigy, youngest executive in mafia history, and boss's right hand man— none of these titles would fit for the current situation. dazai finds himself lost.

the bandaged boy sat at one of the many port mafia towers, his body sat eerily close to the edge of the tower, feet dangling over the cliff. for any normal human person, this would seem both strange or concerning, and yet dazai knew better. his title, ‘demon prodigy’, didn’t stem from nothing, many knew that. his eyes seemed as hollow as ever, and if it wasn’t for the dim light in the midnight sky, one would think he's been completely submerged in the darkness. if dazai was a beacon for anything, anything at all, his beacon would be a beacon of darkness and despair. no one would find even the slightest speck of light in his shallow void of a heart. his port mafia outfit, a regular black suit with white accents, has always been what he wore for long periods of time, besides when he has to get out of it. emotions, trust, they are both valuable for one would need both. but for dazai, he thinks of them as a tool. a tool to utilize and manipulate. emotions are one’s downfall. show too much, you become addicted to the feeling, and show too little, you are rendered indifferent and cold. it is important to keep the balance between the two in dazai’s eyes. trust, is almost the same. if you show too little, you are instantly suspicious. if you show too much, people will take advantage of you. like emotion, it is important to keep a balance. for what, does this executive find himself in a trance for? for someone as adept and well experienced in the field of manipulation, he should know the answer to this, right? not exactly. when he and that familiar ginger — nakahara chuuya, first became partners, dazai thought little of him. dazai was a master at many arts, such as firearms, manipulation, emotions, and concealing, so why did he need a partner? he’s more than capable of working on his own, he used to think. and yes, this is true, but ever since that violent ginger came into his life, he’s been having second thoughts. he doesn’t know how to describe this strange and awkward feeling that keeps fluttering inside of him everytime he sees that ginger walk by. it’s not like anything he’s ever felt. as the demon prodigy, he should know, and yet, he doesn’t. he’s lost. his shallow, unreadable brain can’t comprehend what he keeps feeling. feeling lost, is something dazai has been well acquainted with. he’s seen the different sides of humans, people, and even animals, and yet, this is something he hasn’t. dazai is all too familiar with the sensation of being lost. he’s grown up with monsters, he thinks. and possibly, he’s nurtured into one too.

being in the port mafia at all was not on his bucket list, but he ended up joining anyway. was it out free will? he isn’t sure himself. it’s strange. his and chuuya’s first meeting didn’t go quite well at the start. dazai ended up being on the receiving end of a blow. but as time went on, his perspective of this partnership blossomed into something different. he thought chuuya was the dog in the partner, seeing as he partially obeyed dazai — keyword, ‘partially’. dazai saw no need in telling him the full parts of whatever plan he had rising in the cauldron, and again, he received another blow. this dog has a short fuse, he thought. he is like a dog, especially because of his height. dazai doesn’t understand how one is that short, but he uses every chance he can get to bully him about it.

what’s ironic? the fact that dazai is younger than chuuya.

he makes no move on dwelling on it further.

what dazai has never felt before, is the feeling of love. love is a concept that has never been present in his dull life over the fifteen years he’s been alive — unfortunately for him. over the many times he’s attempted to try one of the many suicide methods he had planned out, they’ve always been interfered with, no less, by a certain orange head. it is oddly strange, and yet dazai doesn’t question it further. why should anyone be happy about his existence? he’s not even human. something as sophisticated as a heart never suited his books. and yet, chuuya defends him every time. its eerily odd. why does he bother? dazai doesn’t know. yet he can’t bring himself to dwell. something about that ginger has opened up a new light to dazai, instead of the shallow empty void he’s so used to. hmm, is this what they call ‘being smitten over someone’? he thinks. does he know? definitely not. but he can see the resemblance, unfortunately so. dazai finds himself wondering if chuuya is filling his empty void where his heart stands. is he the light that dazai has been pining for his entire life? strangely enough, dazai finds himself unable to complain. even as a master of manipulation, the demon prodigy cannot find himself the strength to push away these feelings he finds himself drunk on.

maybe he has gone against his word to not feed on emotions. perhaps. but he feels himself drinking in the unfamiliar sensation. he cannot bring himself to deny it any longer, as much as he wants to. as much as he’d hate to admit it, he truly is smitten over nakahara chuuya.

the sound of a door creaking breaks dazai out of his trance, his head not looking back to see who it is, for he already knows.

“don’t even think about it.” the ginger sneered, his azure eyes seemingly peering into dazai, even though they aren’t. no one can truly read dazai to perfection, with the exception of mori, perhaps. he doesn’t know.

“mmh, I wasn’t planning to.” the bandaged boy replies with a tinge of indifference, almost as if he was going to, yet he would not. dazai would’ve, but he doesn’t want to leave his dog with no owner.

the ginger sighed, walking over to the brunette. he sat beside him, moving his head over to look at his shallow eyes. it’s almost as if nothing truly lived inside them. not even a spark of light. “how did you even get up here? the doors are always securely locked.”

they were locked due to the many times dazai attempted, but it’s not like chuuya would point that out.

“can’t a boy get some fresh air?” dazai feigned innocence, almost as if the raging storm inside if his head never existed, even though it was just a few minutes ago.

“if it’s you, then no.” the ginger snarled back, his brain quickly coming up with snarky remarks.

“really? i’m offended.” dazai feigned, his eyes moving to meet the ginger’s.

“you’ll live, shitty dazai.” chuuya scoffed, staring at those hollow eyes. if it was anyone else besides chuuya, they would’ve thought he was just a lifeless doll. but chuuya knows better. “you look like you’re in a trance. what were you thinking about?”

dazai smiled. chuuya isn’t sure if it is a genuine smile or one of his many façades. “nothing of importance, slug.”

chuuya sighed. “whatever you say.”

the boy moved to sit beside the brunette.

a few minutes passed by in a comfortable, yet uncomfortable silence, with none of the two young executives making a move to initiate a conversation, as odd as it is. perhaps the silence isn’t so bad after all.

dazai feels a weight on his shoulders. he looks to his side to see the same ginger sleeping on him, his body slumped on dazai’s shoulders. dazai doesn’t pull back. instead, he welcomes the embrace and warmth provided by the ginger. he welcomes the previously unknown sensation of love. 

perhaps, he too, the demon prodigy, the youngest executive in mafia history, a child, can too, bask in the warmth of love. perhaps it’s time to let go, he thinks. being smitten over someone isn’t so bad as he initially thought. growing up with monsters, being in the port mafia, all of that has led up to this point of time. a time where dazai can finally let go of his burdens. even so, he cannot find the strength to completely let go of his struggles. with no hesitation, he wraps his left arm around the gingers waist, pulling him closer. he is careful not to wake him up or go too close to the edge. even in a dangerous spot like this, he trusts chuuya to catch him if he falls. dazai finds himself drunk in the sight of what is normally a violent dog, now reduced to the form of a timid boy — or, he is. dazai can’t agree with that description for himself. he is not human, after all.

his thoughts are shifted away when he feels the ginger shuffling to be as close as he can to the bandaged brunette. dazai does not pull away. he instead welcomes the ginger. this sensation used to be strange to dazai, for he never understood the concept. and yet, chuuya has changed his perspective. he finds himself allowing chuuya to be his light. to be the one to show him another world. a world where dazai doesn’t have to suffer. a world where he doesn’t have to fear pain. a world where he doesn’t get constantly whisked away by mori for another mission. a world that is rid of dog attacks. a world where dazai can let loose.

dazai sees that world in chuuya.

Ben is a fairly sweet child with shimmery silver eyes and freckles sprinkled throughout his skin. When Ben was alive, he was a bit of an outcast. He didn't have many friends or people to talk to. In addition to being big-boned, having vitiligo and autism made it hard to connect with other kids.

His voice was squeaky, and there was always a lisp present due to his missing front tooth. Ben's school experience was mediocre at best, and at worst, there would be days he wouldn't attend. The overwhelming environment sets off his selective mustiness.

Back home wasn't much better, but at least he had some space to himself. Ben lived in a trailer with his mother and father. It would've been a quaint place to live if there was continuous upkeep. There were piles of accumulated clutter that made certain areas claustrophobic. The home's wasted potential of the home was being eaten away with mold and rot. Questionable living conditions for anyone, especially a twelve-year-old.

As for his parents, they were also questionable. They were never home for long periods, and were poor listeners. Life hadn't been rough for either of his parents, leading to them using unfavorable coping skills.

His mother was a job hopper. She was kind-hearted but jittery and not all there. She would take any opportunity to shower her boy with affection. In a way, she was attempting to make up for the lost time.

Ben's father was a blue-collar worker, with calloused hands and a rough exterior. The man spoke with a drunken slur. He loved Ben but did it through tough love. He wants his boy to grow up strong and know how to stand his ground. Ben was too trusting for his own good.

Their unintentional neglect made Ben find other avenues of entertainment besides doodling images of Link in his sketchbooks and playing Majora's Mask. There were a select few of the kids he met up with after school to play with in the park.

Through a friend of a friend, Ben met Matt. An older kid, who seemed like he had his life together. They hit it off instantly, growing close like brothers. The two called, played games, and had sleepovers when Ben's parents weren't there to supervise him. If Ben needed something—anything—he could trust Matt.

Of course, when Matt started to talk about this group he was a part of, it piqued Ben's interest. Did Ben understand the logistics of it? Absolutely not! Yet if there was a chance to be like his idol, he'd take it. He'd be strong and courageous, and more people would like him. What was not to love?

Soon enough, it was time for his ascension. The gentle neighborhood boy died scared and alone. Struggling for his last breath in an insignificant body of cold water. Ben's body was left to decay at the bottom, getting washed out by the sediments.

His body was never found. Everyone in the area knew how Ben died. Some murmurings circulated about the cause of his death. However, those theories didn't last long. It was written off as an accident with no further investigation. After the initial short-lived panic, everyone was quiet. Details were kept vague. As if everything were fine.

Ben was stuck in this digital purgatory. He didn't get to be the hero he wanted to be. He couldn't move; he couldn't even speak. Ben was trapped within this statue, like locked in paralysis. Time passed, and he grew sadder that his death was the catalyst of this experiment. The thought became horrifying when Ben realized he wasn't alone.

hii thanks so much for the support!! i've gotten two asks for Zeus x Hera, and frankly i have a bit to write, so i'm going to split this into TWO PARTS-- this set will be Zeus x Hera: before marriage, and the next ask i answer will be during marriage.

here ya go, PART I (largely Zeus' perspective):

so i guess i should probably start off by explaining one of the previous hc's i've already written before which is that i don't think Zeus and Hera saw each other and it was love at first sight.

i think Hera emerged from Kronos' stomach, and like her other eaten siblings, was a bit reserved... a bit tense. it's hard to suddenly assimilate into a world that you literally just popped into.

i do like the idea that all of Zeus' siblings were quite awkward at first- i mean, they look grown up but they don't have "grown up" experiences. not immediately-- it takes time.

so i think they all just kinda stood with each other. Hera and Demeter, i think, are especially close. they bond with Metis, Hesione, and Asteria particularly- they have a sort of "girls club".

i do think Leto may have flitted in and out of this group, her main link being that Asteria was her elder sister... but i think she has a bit of a rougher, wilder side. ((i'm talking about Leto here because she's relevant to my Zeus x Hera hc's btw))

but throughout this whole period, i think Zeus and Hera are strictly siblings. friends. nothing more, nothing less. i think Hera would find Zeus quite cocky. Zeus i think would respect Hera's fierceness but that's it. also, during this time, i do believe that Zeus was fully devoted to Metis-- i mean, they were supposed to be the end goal, the king and queen of Olympus.

UNTIL. Metis dies. and that's a tragic accident that really breaks Zeus into a million tiny irreparable parts. or so he thinks.

i think after Metis, Zeus keeps his distance from EVERYONE. he can only see Kronos' terror when he sees his own reflection and that scares him. so he thinks it'd be best to isolate. never get attached.

and that works for a long time until Leto, who i think has always been close to Zeus, starts becoming more than a friend. she's sort of the only one who's been there with Zeus right from Metis' time. and so Zeus falls in love again. but i do think it's short lived, because there's a part of Zeus that just can't let go of the thing he did to Metis. and to his unborn daughter.

i think somewhere throughout all of this, Zeus and Hera and all their siblings actually start growing closer. a lot closer. they start functioning like a proper family and all of a sudden, it seems like they've all known each other right from the start. i think this is important because part of the reason why Kronos fails is because he starts thinking that everything depends on HIM... he stops trusting his family. so Zeus intends to avoid that mindset by knowing his family better so he'll be less inclined to "give up" on them.

truthfully, i think right from the start, Zeus and Hera have gotten along like a house on fire. even before their courtship... they were "attuned"... they knew each other's thoughts in one glance. they have similar fighting styles-- i think in their youth, Zeus and Hera would team up against Hades and Demeter against Hestia and Poseidon-- that's how they practiced.

no one recognises the blossoming romance between Zeus and Hera more than Rhea i think. and that worries her. in the myths, Zeus and Hera have a secret relationship because Rhea disapproved of it, and i think it's because she thought Zeus wasn't ready for it. because Zeus and Hera were so in sync it reminded her so much of herself and Kronos and she didn't want a repeat. so i think Rhea might've encouraged Zeus and Leto to be together; maybe she thought they'd end differently.

but i hc Leto to have prophetic abilities like her mother Phoebe (hence how Apollo has them too), and so i think Leto sees the future. not clearly. not all of it. but she does see very clearly that there is a woman by Zeus' side as his Queen and it isn't her. i don't believe that Hera and Leto have ever been especially close, and i do think it would have broken Leto's heart into a million pieces to learn that it wasn't her fate to be with Zeus because i do think she loved him completely; i think he was her end goal but she wasn't his... but i think even feeling all of this, she knew that that was Hera's destiny, so she tells Zeus.

i think while Zeus and Leto are together, he's already started seeing Hera in a different light, and he feels guilty about it until Leto tells him that she really is the one. and i think Leto's the one to call things off with Zeus.

and so Zeus finally lets go and pursues Hera. and that doesn't go smoothly at ALL-- compared to all the other goddesses Zeus has chased, Hera takes "playing hard to get" to a new level. but Zeus tries. he tries and he tries and he tries because he does love Hera.

from Hera's perspective, Hera never planned to like Zeus back. when he first start courting her i think she would have been incredibly bored of him... she'd have thought him to be superficial and that he'd leave her after a week, so she'd have just ignored him.

i don't think that Hera knows why Leto left Zeus. everyone thinks Zeus just bored or scared of commitment and ran away- no one knows the truth besides Zeus and Leto. so that wouldn't have helped Zeus' case.

y'know how in fiction (and actually in reality too lol i've seen it too many times), the guy the girl says "i'll never like him" ends up being the guy she gets with? that's Zeus x Hera in a nutshell.

now i have more, but this post has become lengthy i think, so i will stop there and post PART II later today.

Hiii! 💕 oh yes I'd love to!! Tysm for liking my art and your interest in it! Ah, yes! The script was pretty much finished and I planned on drawing it already... but I felt like I had to research something Kishimoto used as reference a bit better and then... I fell into the student/research rabbit-hole.. >.< I had to make a change and it's taking me a bit of time, but I'm getting there 🥹 ((I'm also not too sure about Kakashi as Hokage around that time, I can't really find much and I refuse to read more novels or watch that terrible movie -.- does anyone know?)) Hmm'~ It's an SNS-story, but the plot isn't focussed on romance. Doesn't mean there won't be any though...... ((Maybe unpopular opinion but I don't think either are ready to accept it at that point in their lives despite VotE2. Acknowledgement is one thing. Acceptance another. But taking the next vulnerable step when both are (secretly) terrified of loss and rejection? Oh man. Anyway, there'll be no (immediate) hand holding or skipping over happy rainbows, I'll say that much 👀)) There are things I want to say, but in essays my words fall short and so, I wanted to create a story with that purpose ^^ The plot isn't spread over a long time at all and starts around 2 years after the war when they're 19y- blank period. I may have to switch it to 18-20y because I'm not too sure about Kishimoto's timeline and I weaved in background info through the original. It may not be perfectly aligned, but I did my best >.< And so, the story itself starts much earlier- there are a few flash-backs. I entirely made up the conflict of course, but it is focussed around.... hm, I guess problems that we expected were going to be solved during that time but clearly never were? I'm not 'fixing' the future that is shown in the sequel, but I'm challenging the possibility of that outcome and consequences in my story anyway. Fair warning, there is quite a bit of satire.. Naruto and Sasuke not excluded 😬🤷🏻‍♀️ (It has purpose, I promise.) If anyone saw the design of an OC (I made changes already xD), then you probably saw that Amegakure will play a role as well. I guess you could see the story as some sort of filler-arc made by a dedicated fan, because those also have some characters you'd only see during that arc and then never again :') That's kinda how I approached it anyway. I asked myself 'If I could fill in the timeline here after Sasuke left Konoha and having the future in mind, how would I do that? 🤔' I tried thinking about things I can reveal already or things that will happen, but I feel like it's better to keep it as a surprise!!! 🫢 I haven't written a blurb either. (Why did no one tell us how hard it is to do that? Props to all authors, honestly.) I'll probably post some sketches soon, there are still a few things I have to design as well ^^ aaannndd... it will also come with cw/tw's... it definitely isn't suited for everyone but I can't wait to start the journey~

I'm new to writing, especially about Wilson, and I LOVED your stories and blurbs and etc. I'm just having trouble like getting out there and getting my own ideas written as well as certain requests. Anyways again, it's totally ok if you don't have an answer! Great work, btw!

oh my goodness nonnie i’m so honoured you came to ask me about this and i’d love to share a bit about my process with you!

first i wanna put a little disclaimer: this is just my process and not necessarily some tried and tested thing, it’s just what works for me, and if it doesn’t work for you that’s okay! sometimes you’ll find things that don’t work for you before the stuff that does

so usually most of the stuff i write starts with a small concept or idea, and from there depending on how much motivation/inspiration i have i go one of two ways. if i have a lot of motivation and inspiration i often just go in head first and write without an outline and just get everything out into a document while the creative juices are still flowing.

if i’m feeling like i enjoy an idea but am a little stuck on the progression of things in my head, or i have motivation but a LOT of ideas i want to include, i’ll make an outline to help guide me, this is just really rough bullet points, sometimes interspersed with small pieces of dialogue i want to include for certain scenes

i think getting a feel for what type of things you enjoy is pretty key, but that just comes with practice which is also how you can improve your writing skills (along with reading! my english teacher always used to say a good writer is also a good reader)

i’ve done a lot of fandom hopping since i was a teen and so not being hard on myself when inspiration begins to fade for one thing or move to another helps me always come back to writing even after hiatuses that can last years (i never force myself to write if really not feeling it, because then it’s not enjoyable anymore and this should be a fun experience!)

in terms of characterization, sometimes having a beta reader who is familiar with the fandom is helpful because then they can tell you if they’re struggling to hear something in the character’s voice or think they may respond to a situation differently than you had described

i think all writers have certain preferences for certain parts of stories, for example, i know some people who much prefer dialogue to description or vice versa, now sometimes when you’re stuck there’s ways to get around doing one or the other, but really you can do whatever you want as long as the flow of your story is good. also on this topic, if you’re really feeling drawn to writing a particular scene that’s not linearly next in your storyline, do it anyways! there’s no rules that say you have to write your story linearly, if jumping around from scene to scene works for you then go for it

okay i think this is probably a lot and i can’t really think of anything else that would be helpful at the moment, but i hope this helps on your writing journey and please feel free to continue to reach out and update me on how things are going!

Q: is there a character from their source who isn't/wasn't originally an f/o but that has lore connections to your s/i? in other words, a (potential) f/o for lore reasons?

A: i think maybe scaramouche would fit this one? but i can’t even begin to conceive the idea of sacha liking him romantically, only ever platonically as a close friend or brother figure. i imagine that it wouldn’t be purposeful, they just happen to grow close via their connections with childe + them both being in the fatui. after sacha leaves the fatui, scaramouche ends up becoming wanderer— so he remembers sacha, but because of him wiping himself out of ( basically ) everyone’s memory, it doesn’t remember him. i never intended for them to be friends, but i genuinely can’t imagine them not being this odd pair of pals now, lol.

Q: if your s/i is used for multiple f/os, how would all the timelines look if displayed together?

A: currently i only ship sacha with childe & neuvillette, so it would be like three major periods: in fatui arc ( childe ) , post fatui arc ( neuvillette ) , fatui reunion arc ( childe ) , and then maybe a poly relationship afterwards. most of the time i think of neuvillette’s relationship with him as a short but passionate relationship that ends up being a tragic thing bc neuvillette is only an “ in between “ thing for sacha. he ends up going back to his “ true “ lover, childe in a good 80% of my thoughts.

Q: do you have several timelines in your selfship? if so, describe them. alternatively, do you imagine your selfship in different stages of the relationship?

A: i have a few different timelines! the “ main “ one or the one i operate in most of the time is a timeline where sacha leaves the fatui, becomes a famous conductor, has a short relationship with neuvillette, then goes back to childe. his backstory is consistent amongst all timelines btw, so i won’t get too much into it. secondary timeline is one where sacha stays with neuvillette. third timeline is one where sacha stays in the fatui & is actually the one to kill signora in order to prove loyalty to the tsaritsa + rise and become a harbinger. in this timeline i imagine he’d hunt after scaramouche for “ reasons unknown to even himself “ ( it misses his pal, basically ). childe still loves him but sacha is a lot more intense and freaky.. naturally. more timelines on the way, probably.

Q: what is your s/i's backstory? how does it make them meet your f/o(s)?

A: sacha lovell was found in the woods of fontaine by arlecchino & was adopted into the hearth program. he basically grows up in the fatui, being known for his beautiful voice in the chorus and his willingness to bite. also, it was found eating from a wolf’s carcass. his mother was dead in the snow nearby.

Q: any major changes in your selfship lore over time? if so, compare how it used to be with how it's now.

A: not really! no major changes because i like his wolf symbolism a lot. might play around with location ( snezhnaya instead of fontaine, maybe ) and time frames ( i imagine arlecchino to be much older than childe, so sacha’s adoption comes a little while after childe’s acception into the fatui, they grow up together ) ( sacha’s adopted FAR before lynette, lyney, & freminet in my mind ).

Q: any favorite reoccurring scenario?

A: i keep thinking of sacha going on dates to the opera with neuvillette,, like that’s their spot. they frequent it so often, they have their own personal seats practically. childe wise, i like to imagine them in the fatui as two older teenage boys who don’t understand that their “ friendship “ is like actually just a gay relationship. but it doesn’t matter! they don’t need labels yknow? there’s a playful innocence with it.

Q: are you more of a "has everything written down" self shipper or a "what happens in my daydreams STAYS in my daydreams" self shipper?

A: the first until it comes to anything suppperr personal

Q:alternatively, do you have tons of s/i lore or just wing it on the spot?

A: usually lots of s/i lore! it’s one of my fav parts of selfshipping :3

A: 2000S PUNK ROCK X CLASSICAL PREP AU. childe is a punk rocker in a band called the “ fatui “ and sacha is a prep who is training / learning to become a conductor! except, childe is his teacher’s nephew, so they see each other & bicker sometimes. everyone in childe’s band knows he’s whipped btw. also i imagine they’d either be juniors - seniors in highschool or freshmen in college, and they’d go to the same school or college, whatever. so they just keep running into each other, especially now that they know the other exists. childe with piercings.. yummmm. good ol’ “ enemies “ to lovers ( they don’t actually hate each other but ew punk! vs ew prep! )

You’ve written it so well that you’re like no Ross isn’t a rebound or a plan B but when you do a reread (different anon btw just also did a recent reread) I truly think that Matty would still choose George if he was given the opportunity. It’s not like George is single and Matty has chosen Ross, Matty literally can’t have George in any real way right now and is choosing the safe and stable option, just like what George is doing. I truly believe that if George showed up in NY and was like I broke up with Charli, let’s do this then Matty would grab that Italian take out and follow him anywhere (just a quick pit stop for a tattoo cover up before they go anywhere). They just have a history and connection that sadly I don’t think can be matched by Ross no matter how sweet he is. The thing with Matty and George just seems like something you don’t move on from and there will always be a what if in the back of their minds. The NY chapter was so sweet but they’re also in a bubble and that isn’t realistic for life. In a few weeks they go back to living in tight quarters with George 24/7 and I don’t think Matty has moved on, more out of sight out of mind. Especially if George is going to be nice and understanding now which is harder to hate than when he was being an asshole.

I know we have the tattoo and the remix coming up which is cringe, but is it wrong? They said goodbye to each other and Matty is now with Ross. Just like George couldn’t be mad at Matty’s actions because he had a girlfriend, Matty has Ross now and George doesn’t belong to him in any capacity. He made his choices and I don’t think George owes Matty anything in this regard.

And come on, that goodbye scene in the last chapter. That was heartbreaking, clearly two people that truly want each other but the timing and situations aren’t aligning.

Matty would still choose George if he was given the opportunity: I feel like this is correct in some way, and I feel like Normal People has both made me and ruined me as an author, because I am now an absolute sucker for the will-they-won't-they star-crossed lovers dynamic, the couple that seems to be destined to be together but also who doesn't ever seem to align at any time. Or better, they do, but it never seems to last for whatever reason. (Mostly, because they don't talk to each other much.) And I know I shouldn't draw comparisons between me and actually celebrated published authors because now you'll all think my writing is shite, but please be aware that that's the kind of heartache I'm shooting for. So no, you're not wrong here at all.

If George showed up, Matty would immediately go with him: honestly, I don't think it's that simple. And I'm not saying this because I'm rooting for the healthy relationship here, even if in some capacity I am, but because it's just not that simple. But again, I see where you're coming from with this and it seems to be that eternal loop of going back to the One Person You Think Is Your Person even if the Person hurt you over and over again, or maybe more accurately you can't seem to stop hurting each other. I get it, and it's a valid point too.

Update 1 (short but awful):

Kat, Hbomb's producer, got emails claiming to be from James, including one that explicitly threatened suicide. We don't know if they are from James or not – they could be sockpuppet accounts or just imposters sending harassment – but clearly it was on Kat's mind, at the very least, when James posted the suicide note on Twitter.

Update 2 (MORE fraud): In addition to his Twitter and Tiktok sockpuppets, he had a LinkedIn account under a fake name with fake credentials (since deleted, but screenshots are below).

I am specifically calling them "fake credentials" for two reasons: 1) it's James Somerton, no one should believe a word he says without independent, documented proof to back him up, and 2) in his second apology video, he discussed at length how he'd had trouble finding jobs, both in and out of his areas of expertise, because he had epilepsy and therefore was considered a safety hazard, and so couldn't be insured under his employer's insurance. Because of his inability to work a "normal" job, he turned to Youtube for money.

Now, this is bullshit for different reasons: employment insurance is based on the kind of business and whether it's high or low risk (ex: the insurance premiums for a library are going to be much lower than those for a coal mine), not the safety profile of any individual employee, and anyone straight telling him "we don't think you can do this job because you have epilepsy" is looking at a very easy employment discrimination lawsuit. But regardless, that was his claim: "I can't work because I have a head injury."

So, there are three possible scenarios:

James is lying about his credentials on his LinkedIn, and does not have the experience he claims to have had. I'm particularly dubious of his claims to have attended Carleton University for his MBA the entire time he was a "Marketing Specialist and Account Manager" in London, on site, particularly given his other claims that he grew up extremely poor and was still poor enough to need a roommate (Nick) for the first few years of the channel, and AFAIK has never discussed living or working anywhere other than Canada. In both apologies, he only ever mentions moving between different locations in Canada, without mentioning anything like living in the UK for multiple years.

James was lying about his inability to work in his second apology video, and was in fact able to balance multiple jobs while also producing content for Youtube, and hold down those jobs for significant periods of time. This is all despite allegedly being turned away or fired from jobs due to his epilepsy and having such bad memory issues that he could not tell when something was written about his own experience or was copy-pasted from someone else.

James was lying about both: he is capable of working a regular 9-5, but something else (lack of experience, lack of work ethic, lack of the kind of prestige and money he'd want) keeps him grifting on the internet instead.

what's happening with James Somerton right now: a probably-incomplete primer

TW: suicide, including suicide as a threat and a manipulation tactic.

The short version:

James Somerton is a former Youtube essayist who focused entirely on queer history, queer media criticism, and queer issues in general. He is also a flagrant grifter who has made tens of thousands of dollars via fraud, both directly (lying about his finances to beg for money and getting donations for films he never even started making) and indirectly (stealing whole essays and articles and books, reading them out loud verbatim for his videos without indicating they were anything other than his own work, and then using the prestige he gained from using their work to get Patrons and sponsorships).

The story as told James and James apologists was that James attempted to apologize twice, was hounded mercilessly on the internet for weeks, and then, driven to the end of his rope, he posted a suicide note on Twitter, was MIA for several days, and from then on has been avoiding the internet.

The actual story, as revealed yesterday, was that James used two sockpuppet accounts to defend himself and parrot his talking points (again, while publicly claiming to be trying to take responsibility for his actions), using one to try to rebrand the con under a different name and another to deliberately stoke the panic caused by his suicide note. He was not only aware of the pain and anxiety he was causing people, but he encouraged it on one alt while hornyposting about his favorite movies on the other.

He is an unrepentant con artist who successfully used a suicide threat to prevent further interference with future cons. The only reason he was caught is because he is apparently incapable of going more than a couple of weeks without trying to get back in the internet spotlight, allowing people to tie his alts back to him. He lies for fun and profit and he should not be taken seriously, ever.

The long version:

In December 2023, Youtube essayist Hbomberguy (Harry Brewis) put out a four-hour-long video about plagiarism on the internet, and devoted two hours to addressing as much of JS's plagiarism as he could. I strongly recommend watching the entire thing, as the first two hours build on the concepts that he uses later in the video.

He also blew the whistle on James' fraud surrounding Telos, a studio James founded using thousands of dollars of IndieGoGo money that never actually produced any films despite him definitely working on them! Any day now they'll be released! Don't you worry!

A day later, Todd in the Shadows, a guy whose entire thing is music reviews, posted his own video debunking multiple outright lies that James had told about history, especially queer history. A few more days later, The Ace Couple, who run a podcast about asexuality, released an episode detailing how they'd lost $1.5k donating to Telos.

I have put the videos, Twitter threads, Patreon posts, and Reddit posts by other people discussing different aspects of James' fraud under the cut.

Every other time James was caught plagiarizing, prior to Harry's video, he would lie about it. Either he'd have some excuse (easily proven to be a lie) or he'd retreat to his favorite deflection: "I'm just being harassed because I'm gay."

This last lie was one he'd use not only to deflect accusations of plagiarism, but all criticism in general, no matter how trivial. Every time, the critic or someone associated with them would somehow dox him, or harass him, or send him death threats, or threaten to falsely accuse him of sexual assault.

This happened to The Ace Couple (who'd tried to correct him on something extremely acephobic in one of his videos), Jessie Gender (who'd tried to correct him when he claimed that there were no queer content creators on Nebula, given that she and a bunch of other queer creators were definitely on that platform), and the person who first blew the whistle on him stealing from Tinker Belles and Evil Queens by Sean Griffin (who was accused of being behind death threats he'd received, and hounded so harshly they had to leave Twitter).

It is important to note that every time James faced potentially damaging criticism, or even just a threat to his ego, suddenly he would claim to be harassed by people connected to the critic, including threats to his life. There has never been any proof of any threats being directed at him, nor evidence that, if the threats were real, that they are actually from people connected to the critic.

In the original video by Hbomberguy, Harry makes a compelling argument that James brought on a friend of his, Nick, as a co-writer specifically as a shield against accusations of plagiarism. "How dare you accuse me of plagiarism! Nick would NEVER do that!" This is even more apparent given subsequent developments which I will get into.

When evidence started dropping about different aspects of his fraud (not only Harry's video, but Todd in the Shadows' video debunking his misinfo, The Ace Couple's podcast about their experience donating to his fraudulent film studio, and Dan Olson's tweet thread about James' obvious lies about his finances), he went into hiding for two weeks, and then put out the first of two apologies. He then deleted that one and put out another one a few weeks later. And then he immediately deleted that one.

While his first apology was rambling, vague, and dramatic (lots of sniffing/crying), and his second was more measured, thought-out, and totally batshit (lots of hilariously and bizarrely implausible excuses for why he'd done what he'd done), they had roughly the same points:

Not ALL of his stuff was plagiarized! Actually, a lot of it wasn't! No specifics as to what, though!

Most of the stuff that was plagiarized was just a failure to properly cite sources, as he had no idea that putting someone's name in your end credits or video description (without specifying what parts are attributable to that person or disclosing that you are using their words verbatim) is not sufficient credit,

Also, he totally had permission, in some cases, to use their work verbatim prior to publishing the video (this is not true, and is disproven both in Harry's video and his own screenshots);

He definitely didn't commit fraud with Telos and would soon have a good explanation for where the money went! (he did not)

He was going to keep the videos up so that he could either donate the funds from any monetization to the fund Harry had set up for his victims or to "help Nick's portfolio" by showcasing his work;

He lost his best friend (i.e. Nick) over these allegations, who absolutely definitely wasn't a scapegoat, except Nick was also responsible for a lot of the stuff James was being criticized for;

He was going to keep the videos up so he could either donate the advertising proceeds to Harry's fund for his victims (first apology) or to "help Nick's portfolio" by showcasing the work he'd done; and

As a result of this entire ordeal, he had attempted either self-harm or suicide (he merely alluded to "doing something stupid").

Again, his response was to 1) downplay the severity of his actions or flat out ignore allegations against him, 2) come up with ridiculous excuses for his behavior, 3) throw Nick under the bus, and 4) claim to be in mortal danger. As far as I am aware, he has never taken any concrete action to make amends to any person, not even donating money to charity.

This was coupled with some kind of attempt to profit: monetizing his apology videos, closing and then reopening his Patreon right before the monthly charge cycle happened (totally to let people unfollow him, not at all as a grab for that money), creating a new Patreon under a different name, and changing his Twitter and Youtube handles to distance himself from the controversy while gathering new followers.

At one point (I forget if this was on Twitter or Instagram), he also said that someone had broken into his apartment due to the notoriety he'd received from Harry's video. I believe that was after his first apology, when people started to point out that he'd just changed the name of his Twitter and Youtube channel and had restarted a new Patreon under a pseudonym. (BTW, the pseudonym he used for his new Patreon was "The Gay Raconteur"; this will be important later).

It had what I think was the desired effect: any attempt at pointing out that he was rebranding his grift now came across as weirdly fixated on minor things he was doing, which certainly wasn't worth putting him in physical danger. (Again, he has never provided any proof of this happening, nor provided any evidence that these people allegedly threatening him were, in fact, in some way inspired by Hbomb).

So along comes March 5, 2024, and James posts a suicide note on his Twitter, saying that he is going to set up his videos to automatically publish (for Nick's portfolio), provide in some way for the ad revenue to go to a suicide prevention nonprofit, and then kill himself.

The immediate response from the internet was compassion and totally chilling any further criticism, since you might be callously criticizing a dead person. Harry and Kat worked for a couple of days to get a wellness check for him while a substantial section of the internet called them murderers.

On March 6, a day after the note was published, Nick tweeted that that he had cause to believe James was fine. Kat confirmed that James was safe on March 11. Due to the drama of the "suicide attempt," however, the chill on criticizing James stayed in place for months.

And then yesterday Lady Emily, one of the cowriters for Sarah Z., drops two more bombs:

James has not one but two alt accounts that he was using to rebrand and start over.

The first one was created between his first and second apologies, and originally was for "The Gay Raconteur" until he changed it to "Will"/"thatgayyouknow" and, later, "The Achillean Boy."

The second one was much older, under the pseudonym "Mikey JB," and used stolen pictures from Grindr instead of his own face. However, it is pretty obvious that it is, in fact, a sockpuppet account and not just some other person who happens to like James, as detailed below.

Both accounts, both between apologies and after his "suicide," talked about how criticism of James was unfair because the plagiarized stuff was "like a decade old" and repeating the same excuses that James had also made.

The "Mikey JB" account not only supported James, but actively threw Nick under the bus, saying that a criticized part of a video "reeks of his co-writer."

On March 6, the day after James' main Twitter posted the suicide note, The Achillean Boy account was hornyposting about Ryan Phillipe. James didn't even take a day or two off of Twitter. If he had been completely off Twitter for a couple of days, that could have been an indication that he really had hurt himself and was unable to access his phone, or at the very least unaware of the panic. But he wasn't. He was aware of it and did nothing. Actually, no! Worse than nothing!

On the same day (March 6), the Mikey JB account was actively contradicting Nick saying he was okay (they "haven't spoken in months" so there's no way Nick could know if he was alive) and saying that "people like you" i.e. his critics, "drove him to it." Not only did he ignore the panic he'd intentionally created, he actively drove it.

He saw people going emotionally through the wringer over the idea that they might have somehow caused his death, and intentionally made them keep thinking it. He say people calling his critics "murderers" for "driving him to his death," and he joined in.

Why am I explaining all of this? I want to make a couple of things extremely clear, and the context is necessary to my ultimate points, namely:

James Somerton didn't merely "credit people improperly;" he conned his followers out of more money than some people make in a year with the Telos con, while raking in thousands more per month on Patreon and buying expensive equipment, while claiming to be near insolvency and in desperate need of money.

James Somerton has never taken full responsibility for his actions or attempted to make amends. He has only ever tried to dodge responsibility, particularly by throwing Nick under the bus.

Every time he has ever been criticized, for any reason, he has lied about threats to his life to gain sympathy and quell criticism. This is a standard part of his MO. He has done this over and over and over again. At this point, I think if he says the sky is blue, someone should go out and check first before doing anything.

"But BB, what if he really is getting harassed/threatened or really is suicidal?"

So, okay: people who are attempting to manipulate you may use legitimate problems as a tool. It doesn't need to be fake to be effective - in fact, it might be more effective if it it's true. An abusive ex who says "if you leave me, I'll kill myself" and genuinely means it and actually attempts it (and possibly even succeeds!) is a lot harder to leave than someone who says the same thing but is clearly just bluffing, because the threat is real.

My rule of thumb in these cases is to treat the threat like it's real, without caving to the intended manipulation. Whether your ex is lying or telling the truth when they say, "I'll kill myself if you leave me," the appropriate response in both cases is to immediately call a mental health service or supportive family member. If it's fake, it's inconvenient for them; if it's real, you reacted appropriately. Your response needs to be the same regardless.

You don't get back together with them because it's a real threat (presumably you wouldn't do that if you knew it was fake and they were never in any danger), and you don't tell them that they're a piece of shit who should be dead (HOPEFULLY you wouldn't do that if you knew for a fact that they were telling the truth).

In this case, I am extremely confident in saying that he was coldbloodedly lying the entire time and was never once threatened, and certainly not to the degree he claimed to be. But even if he wasn't, that does not and should not change anyone's behavior in terms of holding him accountable.

And I mean actually holding him accountable: making sure he doesn't try to start a new con on new people, continuing to point out that he hasn't paid anyone back for his previous con (so long as it's still true), that sort of thing. It doesn't mean people should tell him he should go die for real or, I don't know, try to get him fired if he gets a job at Tim Horton's or Target or something else that's not fraud. That would be wrong regardless of whether he's actually in danger or not. The point is to avoid being cruel without negotiating with terrorists.

I'm the anon who send about ons writing, thanks for answering i wasn't expecting since it's been so long. I agree with all your & slacky's points however I don't see it getting better as kagami don't seem to write to tell a story but to make money. I don't want to see rest of cast get butchered or become background cutouts anymore (that phsyicaphy hurts) si I decided to not continue here on. Btw to the point what X series you were talking about? I want to try it :D

Sorry again 🙏 It took me some time to get the strength and inspiration to reply to it. So welcome back.

I don't think that the reason for the current writing is solely making money. Though I also heard that a lot of times from within the fandom and there is some truth in it. But as a writer myself, I have experienced similar situations and can think of a lot of reasons why the writing is like that apart from solely making money.

I don't want to go into too much details as this would be really long, but in short, the problem is not knowing where to go and losing touch with the story and therefore the motivation to write.

In writing this can be described as a writer's block. It's a state where you can't be creative and don't know what to write. You lose the motivation and there are multiple reasons why you get it. The three main reasons for me are:

an irritation in the plot you haven't fixed yet and seem to not be able to fix

Losing touch with the story - because of the irrigation or because you haven't written in a longer time period

Mental health issues in general, like stress and depression

a combination of all of the above

The reasons can be even more complex but of your an author and suffering from it, it's essential to find out what is causing it because it's stopping you from writing. Or more precise; from writing good.

If you write in the state of a writer's block and this state was not cause only by not writing for a long time, the result just won't be good. Because you are forcing yourself to produce something without being creative. Without feeling it. And if you, the author, don't feel it, how should the reader?

I can imagine, a writer's block must be horrible for a professional writer that has to write in order to basically keep his job. The only way to get a stable income is to write frequently. And as Kagami quit writing all his light novel series (most probably because of writer's block), he might be dependent on the manga to continue at least.

Of course, I can only speculate, but I am sure that it's not to make money but because Kagami just isn't able to write any better at the moment. I don't know the reasons, I can only guess.

And my one of my guesses would be: Covid-19

Though the struggle started before Covid came and changed everyone's life, it seems to be a huge part of the problem.

He's writing a lot about it in his afterwords and I feel that it changed his way of life and how he responds to things. Maybe it's because he's getting less in touch with other people or lost sight of friends and colleagues. Or the whole situation affected him in a different way.

The way people deal with difficult situations is different around the world and in Japan. And by that I mean, that Japanese tend to avoid inconvenience and therefore rather don't want to remind people of current events in stories. We hear Kagami talking a lot about "in those times we have to stand together" and this sadly reflects on his story. In a situation where we readers want conflict, he's making the story all happy-go-lucky.

One other reason might of course be that now that the story is in need of tying the storylines together, it doesn't work out like planned and that can be frustrating. And the only way out is to talk to people. An author will never be able to find the best solution only by themselves. They can find a very good one, but the best plots and ideas will only be born if you talk to people. And this seems to have suffered a lot in case of this story. But again, we sadly don't know why.

So. Whatever caused the writer's block in the first place, the only way out is, to overcome it. And I see hints that Kagami is slowly reconnecting with the story. Mainly in him writing Twitter posts again. A writer that is excited about their own work is the first step in the right direction. And we see more plot points making some sense (my standards got really low by now).

But I can also understand if you say you will stop. I would like to stop as well sometimes and then I remember how much effort I already put into this and then I can't. I'm still curious if the story will be able to turn around and gain my interest again. And if all of this mess will make some sense in the end... Maybe there is an explanation though most probably I will have to find it myself.

Good that you ask 😁 I didn't think about explaining as I have been posting a bit about it. But as it's my favorite series of all times, I'm happy to explain it a bit.

You can find it easier if you are looking for X 1999 or X/1999. It's a dark fantasy manga by CLAMP and has two adaptations. And anime and a movie.

What I love about it, is that it has everything I look for in a story. It has a good mystery plot about the end of the world, a lot of characters which play their individual and important roles, a lot of cool and sometimes brutal and gory action and most importantly, in the end it's a story about the character's relationships with each other and human relationships in general.

I don't even know what made me fall in love with the series in the first place, but part of it might have been the sexual under overtones between the main leads. Though the tension is never resolved, it still gets me every time. Damn.

Though the manga is gorgeous and just love 💕, it might not be the best start into the series as it takes its time to build up the plot. Also the style at the beginning is still very rough. It gets more and more beautiful throughout the series but you will have to survive 5-6 volumes first. Nevertheless the artwork is still breathtaking also in the old style and is even more impactful if you are reading it as a physical copy. Also the manga was sadly never finished. But it's worth the ride. The way is so much more important than the goal.

Still, it might be easier to start with the anime. It mainly follows the manga just that they rearranged some of the plot points to fit the pacing of a TV series. Though it cut out a lot of the gore which in my opinion, is essential for the impact of the story. And it also cut a lot of the gayness and the bonding of the characters. Oh and the soundtrack is awesome! And it has an ending.

The movie was made really early. And you can watch it, but more as an addition to the manga and anime.

So please, read the manga. It's absolutely awesome. 🥹
