A shrill screech echoed throughout the venue as Peter adjusted the microphone stand. "Erm, I believe everyone onstage has said every possible thing they could say about and to the birthday girl, but I'm gonna switch it up a bit," he said, sending a look to his youngest sister, who paid close attention to him. He chuckled, knowing exactly why.

"Now Elizabeth Aria Hernandez is every sibling's nightmare," he started off, earning him a laugh from all the visitors. "And I know every younger sibling is a devil, but she's a little more than that. I mean, come on! She's been arrested at the age of fifteen – way before I did. My first juvie experience was sixteen by the way." Laughter. "At sixteen, she tried running away from home, circling around the neighborhood, only to come back crying fifteen minutes later." More laughter. "The following year, she attempted to elope with her hot-shot boyfriend who was ten years older than her at that time, but thank goodness I caught them climbing down a makeshift twine using my bed sheets. If dad hadn't noticed the sheets were gone, she was probably somewhere in a house trailer with her jobless 'soul mate' or was the new face of MTV's Teen Mom." And that was when everyone broke down into hysterics.

"All I'm saying is, man, she's gone through more things, and caused more trouble than any other decent adult would in their lifetime. Which is why we never trusted her with a car—"

"OH MY GOD SHUT UP!" the petite brunette screamed, running onstage and yanking the mike out of her bullying brother's hold. Eyes fuming and cheeks pink, she glared at her brother, almost on the edge of crying.

"—but, all that is gonna change now," he smirked, digging into his back pocket and pulled out a key.

She gasped, along with the partygoers, realization finally dawning on her. Her gaze stayed glued on the metallic object and he laughed before taking her hand in his and enclosing it in there.

He gently took the microphone from the bewildered lass and raised his wine glass half-filled with punch towards the audience. "To another year of havoc! God forbid not with that new Audi though."

The younger of the two gasped louder and the size of her eyes doubled, tears suddenly slipping from them. She lunged herself unto Peter and embraced him so tightly, he stopped breathing for a few seconds. "Thank you so much, Peter!"

"Bro," Katy whispered to her brother over on the driver's seat.

"What?" he murmured in reply, careful not to awaken the sleeping beauty and his nephew Vance on the backseat of their car. It was well past two o'clock in the morning and the two were on the brink of surrender when the clock hit midnight. And they understood. They exhausted from all the travelling, preparations and the merrymaking all in one day.

"Why were you and Charlotte so...uneasy tonight?" she asked. "And you two were actually fine earlier, but it became really tense between you two after your speech. I had to stop myself from leaving the table because the atmosphere was so heavy."

"We, um—," he chewed on the inside of his cheeks, hesitating whether he wanted to share his girl problems with his sister. "—we almost kissed."

"What?!" she gasped as if she got a new car herself. She smacked the man on his chest, not caring if he was behind the wheel. "Was that what happened with you and Charlotte at the beach? Did I interrupt the both of you?"

He nodded, scratching the back of his neck. "Thanks a lot for that by the way, sis. Now she's as shy as ever around me again."

She covered her mouth, still in shock that her brother was falling in love again – not that it wasn't obvious enough. "Oh my God, I'm so sorry, Peter. Did you tell her you loved her?"

"Something like that," he side-eyed her and she knew immediately that those weren't his exact words. Peter was a songwriter, he knew how to sugar coat things. "And it's different with her, really, because in her time, women were—" he paused, eyes wide, remembering his sister knew nothing about the complicated mess they were in.

"What do you mean with 'in her time'?" she noticed her brother's abrupt stop mid-sentence, perfectly done eyebrows furrowed in confusion.

Of all the people in the entire world, Peter trusted Katherine with his life. She was like his second mother and she almost knew all the solutions to everyone's problems. She was the siblings' backbone and he didn't know what kind of man he could've become if it weren't for her continuous support for his dream. She was the only one who knew about Charlotte when she and Peter were only writing to each other and Katy insisted and looked forward to the London girl's visit in New York. "Can I tell you something crazy?"

"You always tell me the craziest things, Peter," she laughed, unsure. She has never seen Peter this serious about something before, besides speaking about their mom and his dreams of course. "In a scale of one to ten, how crazy?"

"Damn, woman, I don't know, three hundred million?" he said angrily, his knuckles turning white due to his death grip on the steering wheel. "You'd probably send Charlie and I to the mental institute after this."

"You're getting stressed now. Just breathe, Peter," she advised and he complied. "Okay, now, spill."

"I honestly don't know what to say," Katy mumbled under her breath, shaking her head, obviously puzzled.

"Well it would've made more sense if you took your phone out right now and called a psychiatrist for Charlie and me.

"The older woman snapped her head towards her brother, eyes filled with sympathy. "But that's not what you did when Charlotte explained her situation.

"He put the car in park in the garage and sighed, "I trusted her."

"And I trust you." She gave him a smile, resting her hand on top of his on the gear lever.

He returned her expression with a grateful grin and bit his lip in concern, "What do you suggest we do?"

She avoided his eyes and frowned, "I honestly don't know, Peter. This isn't just something we can figure out overnight. I don't know much about time travelling but it's either Science or something else, I'm not sure. What I do suggest, though, is that we get some rest tonight, enjoy our next two days here in Hawaii, and we'll get to the bottom of this when we get back in New York."

He nodded, convinced with his sister's proposal. Despite his calm and optimistic demeanor, he has had sleepless nights concerning his pen pal's condition. With his sister's willingness to help, he definitely was able to breathe better now. He had no ounce of regret informing her of their troubles. "Thank you, Katy."

They slipped out of the vehicle – Katy held her sleeping son in her arms, while Charlotte curled up in Peter's strong hold.

"Good night," were their last words to each other before proceeding to their respective bedrooms.

Peter was up and about at eight in the morning at the sound of movement downstairs. He stood from the couch too small for his stature and stretched for a few moments. He pulled a cotton shirt over his head, did his business in the bathroom, and walked over to the futon where Charlotte lay.

His heart swelled at the sight of her sleeping soundly as she hugged a pillow close to her. God, she was beautiful. Leaning closer, he decided to give her a kiss on the forehead and when he pulled away, her green eyes stared up at him in wonder.

"I'm sorry for interrupting you," he said and immediately drew back, folding his hands behind him. "You can go back to sleep."

"It's fine." She blinked and slowly sat up. She noticed she was still in her clothes from the night before and smiled, already knowing the singer must've carried her inside the bedroom. "Thank you for what you did last night, Peter. I probably weighed a ton."

"No you didn't!" He released an inaudible chuckle and shook his head. "You were light as a feather."

"Now you're over exaggerating," she giggled and fiddling with the ends of the sheets, falling into silence again.

"Well, I'm going to check on everybody and see if she needs help with anything," his honey-like voice cut through the momentary pause."I'll take a quick shower and join you downstairs."

They gave each other small smiles of acknowledgement before going their separate ways.

Charlotte stepped out of the shower, combing her hair. She stopped in her tracks seeing one of Peter's cousins, Daniel, inside her room, smiling directly at her. Hugging the robe to herself, she smiled back shyly, "Hello, Daniel. Are you in need of anything?"

"Just came to tell you that breakfast will be served in thirty minutes," he said, running his hand through his hair smugly. He bit his lip as he scanned the self-conscious lass from head to toe. She was undoubtedly one of the most beautiful girls he has ever laid eyes on. That, and she had an air to her that made her different, like she didn't belong to this day and age. She dressed a little more conservatively and spoke in a more formal manner. Her behavior piqued his interest from the day they met; practically speaking, yesterday.

Admittedly, he was a ladies' man himself — much like his older cousin. Meaning, he's had his own dose of fun with different girls. He had no type. But during all those ventures, he noticed he never did much of the chasing, girls threw themselves at him. Even the pretty, shy girls like Charlotte warmed up to him quickly and all he needed to do was flash that charming smile and signature wink.

But Charlotte never noticed his stare, nor did she glance his way and it irritated him greatly. He noticed her tense state as she kept her eyes down on her soft, fluffy slippers in embarrassment. "Oh, I'm so sorry if I seemed like a creep just entering in here, Charlotte. I knocked, I promise."

She nodded meekly and picked on the end of her robe, "Well, is it alright with you if you leave now? I'll change into more fitting clothes and join you all downstairs."

It was then when someone knocked softly on the door and pushed it open. Peter's eyebrows furrowed in confusion at the sight of his cousin inside their room in such an inappropriate setting. He read the discomfort in Charlotte's face and he angrily snatched Daniel's arm and ushered him out of the room before closing it behind them.

"What the fuck was that about, man?!" he glowered at the lad, ready to knock him out if he attempted to harm Charlotte in anyway. Blood relations would be out the window at this point.

"Nothing!" the younger of the two men raised his arms in defense, shaking his head fervently. "Mom just told to invite her to breakfast."

"Dude, you could've waited until she was decent or at least stayed outside of our room. You have no idea that she's too sensitive when it comes to these things. She almost got raped once, Daniel," he spat, grabbed his shoulder, and locked eyes with the boy, hoping his words were getting to his brain and not out of the other ear. "I know you're used to those young, wild girls, man, but Charlotte...she's..."

"Different," Daniel sighed and nodded. "I know, man, I'm sorry."

"I don't need your apology, D. She does."Charlotte felt her heart rate return to normalcy again when the two boys left the room. She couldn't hear what they were saying nor did she have any idea what they did, but it was obvious Peter was mad. She smiled at herself at the thought of Peter. He saved the day once again. He always did; and she felt beyond blessed knowing she had met him. He made her feel things out of this world and she was afraid it meant she was in love with him. But she didn't know if she really did love him. Maybe it's just a mere crush, she told herself. Whatever it was, she felt a certain attraction to him and the desire to be around him as much as possible was slowly developing in her system.

And then a recollection came to her: he told her he liked her last night. Like. She wasn't sure if it meant their feelings were mutual, if the level of admiration for each other was equal with his. And that scared her even further.

She pulled out a bright yellow sundress from a neat pile of sundresses in her luggage and slipped it on as she thought about the great Peter Hernandez. Ever since his confession of endearment, all she could think about was that boy – his handsome face, his kind nature, those sweet little gestures, his patience, him.

She held her blushing cheeks in her hands as she stared at her own reflection in the mirror. "Blimey, I might be going crazy."

Shaking all her thoughts off, she proceeded to the dining room, returning everyone's warm greeting and making sure to avoid Daniel. His arrogance irked her and one would've thought she was accustomed to it for being around Peter so much, but the singer was much more different. The man did it to ease tensions, make people laugh and impress ladies, plus he's had two nights' worth of applause since he was four years old so he had the right to carry his crown. But the cousin, he carried it around to impress the ladies as well, point taken, but with a different intention in mind, especially when he just sneaked into her room earlier and not even react too much knowing she wasn't in the perfect condition to see him.

She found Peter slicing some fruits with Katy's husband as they conversed. Feeling her gaze on the back of his head, he turned and sent her a wink which in turn, caused her cheeks to turn beet red once again. Shyly approaching them, she mumbled an earnest, "Good morning. Do you need help with anything?"

"No, we're fine sweetheart." Andrew flashed his pearly whites and motioned to the table, "Just take a seat with Vance and the ladies."She settled next to Katy who was combing her son's wet curly hair on her lap. "Hello, Charlotte."

"Hello," she replied with a small smile, pinching Vance's soft cheek, making him giggle.She told her son to go and help his dad and uncle, leaving the both of them alone. Silently, she said, "Charlotte, I know."

"Know about what, Katy?" She raised her eyebrows, biting her lip, unsure.

"About you. Where you're from, what happened, everything," she deadpanned and locked her gaze on the London girl to let her know her intentions were pure."Peter told me about you guys and I'm willing to help, Charlotte."

The younger of the two women frowned, holding back tears. "Thank you so much, Katy. I am clueless as to how this all began."

Katherine hugged her and wiped her tears away quickly before someone notices and begin questioning.

Charlotte found her time with them pleasant and enjoyable, filled with remarkable music, excellent food, and endless laughter. They rented beaches, held swimming parties in their backyard pool, and went hiking all as a family. Peter even attempted to give Charlotte standup paddleboarding lessons, but she ended up kneeling and sitting on the board ever so often, scared for her life. The whole thing was an inexplicably wonderful adventure and never in her whole eighteen years of existence did she think she would ever experience these things if she only ever lived in London and didn't meet up with her pen pal.

After two fun-filled days in Hawaii with the Hernandez clan, Peter and Charlotte were back in New York along with Peter Sr, Elizabeth and her friends, and Katy's family. Aunt Rachel, Mike, Isaac and Daniel were heartbroken to see them all leave and sincerely expressed that they could come visit anytime they wanted. Daniel, especially, wanted Charlotte to stay badly, admitting that he fancied her and even gave her an expensive diamond necklace before she left. Charlotte, however, felt horrible to have been avoiding the singer's cousin during those two days. She just didn't want to lead him on because she certainly knew she didn't feel anything for him. It all felt overwhelming.

April 30, 2014

New York City

Two days after their arrival in the city, Peter knocked on Chalotte's door at six in the morning, telling her to get ready for a morning walk in Central Park with him and Geronimo.

Charlotte had gotten accustomed to Peter leaving her every day at the crack of dawn for a morning run and returning moments later to breakfast which she cooked. She was surprised that he invited her this time, excited that they were going to be close to each other again. Peter never acknowledged and acted upon his words of fondness for her ever since that night he actually told her and it made her sad, thinking he regretted his declaration.

"See? Isn't a morning walk relaxing?" he beamed at the brunette. She was clad in a black sweater, tight jogging pants, Adidas running shoes, and a fitted cap – all owned by his sister. It took him a while to convince her to put the ensemble on in his apartment.

"I doubted it at first, but then I realized it really is." She closed her eyes and inhaled the cold air, patting Geronimo's head, who walked between her and the man.

Her eyes shifted from one area of the park to another, seeing some New Yorkers doing the same things as they are. She loved parks, this one especially. It was huge and can definitely used for different activities without anyone disturbing you and your peace.

Turning around, she saw a young boy who looked oddly familiar in a bike trailing behind them. He sent her a mischievous grin and she smiled in return with uncertainty.

Peter swung around with curio and he immediately recognized the kid. "Hey buddy!"

The child stopped paddling and hopped off his bike, deciding to join them. He did a fist bump with the man, grinning big, "Hi Peter!"

"What are you doing here this early?" the chap asked in concern, rubbing the soft curls on the child's head. "Are you alone?"

"I just picked up some papers so I could get them delivered," he answered, pointing to a clasp of The New York Times dated today inside the basket of his bicycle.

Peter cocked an eyebrow, "You're a newspaper boy? But you're only eight!"

"It's what keeps me eating while my parents figure out things," he shrugged, eyes moving between the two of them, as if conveying some sort of message.

"What?" Charlotte questioned, feeling bad for him and at the same time, a little disturbed that he's watching them in such an intense manner, wanting them to understand something. "What are you trying to say, boy?"

"Are you two kidding me?!" he suddenly exploded, raising his arms in defeat. "Don't any of you remember anything?!"

"Woah, what is the matter with you?" Peter watched his outburst incredulously, not fully grasping what was happening. "All I remember was paying you twenty bucks a week or so ago so you could ask her—" he motioned over to Charlotte. "—her name!"

And then it hit her. It was indeed the child she first met when it all happened.

His little fists balled in anger. "I can't believe this!"

"Believe what?" Peter grew more and more confused and he just wanted the little boy to tell them what his problem was.And then he breathed, inhaled and exhaled heavily for about ten seconds before looking up at the man, "I am from your past." And then to the lass, "I am from your future."

They looked at him like he had grown two heads, unsure if he just gave them a riddle they had to solve.

He cried and cried, his little figure shaking as he sobbed. He didn't know how this even happened, how he let this happen. They kept telling him it wasn't his fault, but he knew it was because of him. He sniffled and spoke, "I'm your son."

Under temporary layoff, but still occasionally on-call...

Wife, child, and two cats.

As above, two cats.

4. Who do you miss the most?

My IRL gaming friends and local shop owner.

5. When was the last time you left your home?

Got called in for a few hours of work yesterday.

6. What was the last thing you bought?

Groceries.

7. Is quarantine driving you insane or are you finally relaxed?

It's a bit of a mix. I like being home, but the financial stresses and attempting to assist with the online schooling is challenging.

8. Are you a homebody?

Yes I suppose I am if I don't have something to do out.

9. What movies have you watched recently? What shows are you watching?

The Whip of the 80s

My sister and I were baking banana loaf (they’re surprisingly easy to do) one Wednesday night. The kitchen is usually boring and silent at this time, so I decided to play some music. The kitchen being a public area and with my parents in the vicinity, I had to be very careful with my music choice. Being very thoughtful, I “hey Google”d Africa by TOTO, something that would be very much familiar to the Gen X parents. Spotify, by default, plays the Spotify Radio for a specific song when you request for it via Google Assistant. And so the 80s nostalgia train chugged on incessantly with songs like We Built this City, Every Breath You Take, Rosanna, and this iconic anthem of today's generation.

After accidentally rick-rolling myself in the most unfunny way possible, I remembered Estelle Caswell's great analysis of music from the 80s. There’s this artificial sound-processing technique artists of this decade used called gated reverb. And it’s eVERYWHERE. It’s that punchy, almost whip-like sound that you hear in nearly e v e r y song of the 80s. You’ll hear it on a-ha’s Take On Me, Tears for Tears’ Everybody Wants To Rule The World, and Deniece Williams’ Let’s Hear It for the Boy. Oh and literally all Michael Jackson songs.

So what is it with this sound, and why specifically this snappy whip sound?

I think we need to start with how the sound is made. Reverb, in the most basic way possible, is produced by playing an instrument in one side of a sound-reflective room and placing the recording device on the other side. It’s effectively that lingering sound, the sound that gets left behind when you scream in a tile-laden bathroom. It’s close to an echo, but not quite. This is achieved when the sound waves reach your ears at very v e r y small delays that you won’t perceive them as echoes but instead a lingering effect.

This recording technique has been around even before the 80s. Experimental rock bands like Pink Floyd have played around with reverb to heighten the aural atmosphere of their music. This is very prominent on all parts of Shine On You Crazy Diamond and you can hear it to great effect with that iconic guitar riff at the start of Part II.

But the key to understanding this 80s whip sound stems from the gated part of gated reverb, and it was only truly made possible around this time.

You see, gated reverb isn’t a sound that can be reproduced in the natural world. It’s artificial. That whipping, punchy sound is produced by cutting off the volume below a certain threshold and reverb then amplifying the resulting sound. The result of this is that immediate punch sound that whips, disappearing as fast as it cracks. Aurally, there’s no recognizable reverb in the traditional sense. The entire sound is the reverb. It all just sounds like one snapping whip sound because of the gating.

The development of this sound was truly made possible by the great strides in technology brought forth by the turn of the decade. The 80s was prefaced by the digital revolution of the 70s which brought us technologies like integrated circuits (IC) which paved way to (relatively) inexpensive computers. Tech giants today in the names of Apple and Microsoft all trace their roots to this decade. By the 80s, this technological advance trickled to many real-world applications and music production is one of them.

Estelle Caswell of Vox presented this fact on her well-produced (as always) video, How a recording-studio mishap shaped ‘80s music. Back in the 70s, only the big, well-known bands had access to expensive equipment and studios to produce the sound they want for their music—reverb is one such sound. The first-ever application of the gated reverb in pop music was in 1981 when Phil Collins released In The Air Tonight. This is widely considered to be his greatest and most influential work and for good reason—this song paved the way for the decade’s musical character.

But the breakthrough really only happened with the release of a reverb unit named AMS RMX16 in 1982—the first of its kind to be powered by a microprocessor (yes, it's that chip that runs your computer). This shoebox-sized circuit wizardry allowed for musicians and sound engineers to put reverb on whatever sound they wish. There was no longer any need for renting out expensive studios and elaborate (often bulky) equipment. Suddenly everyone had access to these luxuries, and these luxuries were thoroughly made use of. Gated reverb cracked its whip across the charts. And by across the charts, I meant aCROSS THE CHARTS. Every year from 1983 to 1989 had AT LEAST a month where the chart-topper was a song with a gated reverb drum line. This sound became so quintessentially 80s that artists today (looking at you Bruno Mars) make use of gated reverb to infuse a throwback-ist vibe to their music.

The widespread use of gated reverb might suggest that there has been no resistance to making use of the whip. There was a 1985 cover of That's What Friends Are For by a powerhouse four-way that you'll forget gated reverb even existed. Dionne Warwick, Elton John, Stevie Wonder, and Gladys Knight sang the melodramatic song to the top of the 1986 charts. From radio stations to MTV specials and even in kitchens where your mother had probably sang the eponymous line, it's an instant classic. And there's no denying it of that achievement. But doesn't it seem like the song that just sticks out? When you think of 80s music, is it really the one that comes to mind?

Not only is there a gated reverb, but there's a particular mood to both songs. This mood permeates with other songs of the era.

A close listen to Bleachers' Don't Take The Money makes it instantly recognizable. Comparing it to another song of the same era, Everybody Wants To Rule The World by Tears For Tears, and there's a tangible connection. Not only is there a gated reverb, but there's a particular mood to both songs. This mood permeates with other songs of the era, only they're not from the same era. Don't Take The Money is from Jack Antonoff's side project Bleachers, from 2017. But the music footprint is so distinctly similar with that mood so very persistent that they just belong so much together. And, I don't know if I'm the only one who hears it, but doesn't a gated reverb snare sound close to people clapping in a concert?

The character is in the beat, the beat is in the drums, and the drums are in gated reverb. It's the punchy drums that whip your feet to the beat.

Arguably, the most iconic song of the decade has to be Every Breath You Take by The Police. Its sweet, simple guitar, bass and drum line accompanied with Sting's smooth vocals make for its deliciously captivating tone; you'll bob your head for days on end. It's the song that you'll gently glide and snap and clap your body to while you cook dinner. Qualitatively, it's not even a sweet song (it's actually about big-brother-esque surveillance) and the mellow bass line isn't really one to dance to, but you dance anyway. If you listen to the song without the drums, it's an entirely different song altogether. The character is in the beat, the beat is in the drums, and the drums are in gated reverb. It's the punchy drums that whip your feet to the beat.

Listening to other gated reverb classics like We Built This City, Karma Chameleon, and I Think We're Alone Now exemplifies the 80s mood perfectly. It's the enthusiasm, the tempo, the outpouring energy of these songs punctuated with the gated reverb drum line that make them irresistible to slide and pump and clap to. And that's not even a figure of speech, that gated reverb snare drum is the one you'll clap along to, along thousands of people listening independently like a concert that permeates through space and time. That sound is no coincidence. That pronounced snare drum claps very prominently throughout all those 80s songs. It's a Footloose in each and single one of them. (And yes, Footloose by Kenny Loggins has a gated reverb drum line). Even the mellow Every Breath You Take reeks of the energy. It's this transcendental vigor of energy and dance of most gated reverb songs that enveloped the music scene of the 80s. It's the natural evolution of the disco, albeit a much lively and more electronic evolution.

Going back to the AMS RMX16, there's really more to it than just gated reverb. For everything it is, it's actually a very revolutionary piece of tech.

Functionally, it only really is a reverberation processor and the world was still long ways far from the studio-in-a-garage technology, but it marks the starting point. Its predecessor, the DMX15R, was the first-ever microprocessor-controlled digital reverberator, the keywords being microprocessor and digital. Before this, the norm was analog sound processing. Pink Floyd made use of the EMS VCS 3, an analog synthesizer for their most famous albums, The Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here.

This archaic technology looking the likes of early-WW2 air force equipment was released in 1969 and was extremely popular with progressive rock bands. It was a dainty piece of equipment, prone to tuning instabilities and incredibly difficult to use. It was so bad that bands avoided using it for producing the melodic tunes of their music, instead opting for producing electronic background effects and ambient sounds. In contrast, this is how the AMS RMX16 looks:

Before this fantastic piece of music circuitry, really the only effective way to produce and manipulate reverb was through plate reverberation. In essence, sound is transmitted through a large plate of sheet metal from one side then picked up by contact microphones on the other. Reverb time (time before the sound completely fades away) is adjusted by moving framed acoustic tiles, called a damping pad, closer to the metal plate without touching it.

This hulking contraption is about the size of a large classroom chalkboard, including the wall it's hinged on. At least one person has to be dedicated to operating it as has large moving parts that need to be adjusted to get the much-wanted r e v e r b e r a t i o n w a v e s. With all the fuss in operating reverb machines there was no time for gated reverb to be accidentally created—you'd have had to be very specific in finding that sound if you wanted it.

Gated reverb only really happened by accident when Hugh Padgham, the sound engineer in Peter Gabriels' eponymous third solo album. The sound was picked up by an overhead studio mic that was used as an intercom for the band to communicate with the people in sound processing. It made use of a noise gate that cut off sound below a certain level and a sound compressor which modified the loud and quiet sounds to be closer to each other in level, resulting in that classic whip sound. When the AMS RMX16 came to the scene, it included gated reverb built-in. It made use of a microprocessor to do everything. Instead of having to turn knobs and move huge metal plates to manipulate the sound waves, a push of a button will command the microprocessor to do all that for you. The reverb processor comes built-in with multiple presets that would require significant effort and fine-tuning with previous technologies. No need for the overhead mic and a separate reverb processor; it's all in the box.

This paradigm shift in music production established an era of digitally-produced music.

This digital (music) revolution allowed for everyone to achieve that sound in an easily-reproducible way, thus allowing for its proliferation throughout the airwaves and into the lives of everyone who had at least a radio. Earth, Wind & Fire, a band that rode the disco scene to superstardom, incorporated the electronic sound in their 1981 album Raise! with the sound fully realized in the disco-synth hit in Let's Groove. While their disco roots was still prevalent, that heavily synthesized bassline and intro vocals is undeniably 80s; and the electronic shift that came with the era. It proved irresistible even to bands that were long-standing vanguards of their genre. Jefferson Airplane, a much-loved hardline rock band from the 60s which through its tumultuous history morphed into Jefferson Starship then finally Starship, with that final incarnation completely embracing the commercial, electronic wave of the era—much to the chagrin of their long-time fans. Even The Smiths, a band known for their rejection of synthesizers and dance-pop, couldn't resist the use of electronic wizardry. A listen to their best work, There Is a Light That Never Goes Out, and there's that recognizable whipping beat. The appeal was undeniable, and the soundscape forever changed.

At this point in time, the banana loaf we baked has long since been completed and consumed. And similarly, that 80s sound has also been widely consumed to the fullest extent of everyone's music palate, completely sickened by that repetitive whip sound that is gated reverb. But the music revolution persists. The culture of electronic music production and digitalized soundwaves lives on until today, and will continue to be alive into the future. So how do you like the taste of it? That banana loaf still lives rent-free in my head, and I'm not complaining at all.
