As someone who breathlessly checks the NHL standings several times a day (when no games are played. Do they change throughout the day? no), and who is newish to leafs hockey I have to know: Are you more stressed by the prospect of facing the Bruins or the Panthers?
OH BABY i loveeee this question.... also re standing-checking ME TOO !!! tf
anyway i prefer to think of this as a pros and cons list rather than a this vs that....
bruins: on paper, the worse of the two teams. pretty good at shot suppression but actually not very good when it comes to shot creation -- barely breaking even on expected goal % (213 xGF, 212 xGA)(the leafs have a TWENTY-goal difference here!). greatest strengths are finishing and saving (largely pastrnak and swayman respectively, both Very good), while the leafs are actually just about league average in both. you can see this in all of the leafs-bruins games we've played this year -- despite the record itself the leafs outchanced the bruins in three of four games and took two to overtime.
panthers: much better play-controllers (FORTY-goal xG difference wtf) and fantastic saving (fucking bobrovskyyyyy) offence is similar to the leafs (contrary to popular belief btw... offence and a hot goalie tends to win championships. fuck defence) in that it is absolutely nuclear w/ multiple gamebreakers (barkov, machuk....reinhart???) instead of just the one (pasta). also unlike the leafs they are great at the whole "tense playoff emotion" thing which um. Is going to suck ass.
both teams: play dirty, have eliminated the leafs in the recent past, have a good power play that Is going to kill us (lacking penalty-kill aside LMAO), have a pretty favourable bias (one of these three teams is bottom five in power plays for in the past ten years. can you guess who?) and will get as many calls as they can possibly get (still not over the panthers penalties taken per game per series last year lol. as in if i'm not laughing i'm crying. girllll they were the cleanest team in the league for 5 games <3 where they concussed a rookie <3) ANYWAY moving on both have a style that tends to take advantage of the leafs' lack of fuck-you attitude which means this is truely just a terrible terrible choice because neither option is favourable.
i think they have a better chance of beating the bruins tbh? like most of defeating that team is having a hold on either pasta or swayman/ullmark -- easier said than done but easier done than trying to hold onto the entirety of the panthers tbh. although of course this IS hockey and anything can and will happen. fingers crossed dice ready to roll lets go leafs baby

2-2 cats from one of the more bonkers goalie interference challenges i have seen this year which becomes even more bonkers considering how the league was going to ""heavily scrutinise" the BOSvsFLA series after the mattypasta fight but that being said benny goal with a lundy and erod assists HELL YEAH BROTHER
Tumblr media
i dont think this league will ever be able to fully define goalie interference nor make any consistent calls on it anytime soon but the reasoning being "well it was a little push he can have a little push, as a treat" is something i did not anticipate being a reason but you know what i live for the bit yeah sure toronto ill accept that (benny postgame explains it better which is swayman in that position whether he pushed coyle a little or not, would not have been able to save it anyways)
that flirting vs sexual harrasment meme but offensive player pushing the defensive player on top of the goalie is the former and defensive player pushing the offensive player into the goalie is the latter
Tumblr media
unperturbed man who has become enemy number 1 in boston hearing the call get confirmed never change benny

ok ill bite. what on earth happened with the bruins
okay so.
idk how much you know about hockey playoffs but basically theres up to 7 games per round, its first to 4 wins advances/wins the round
tonight was game six of the bruins vs toronto maple leafs series (in round 1 of the playoffs) and well. the bruins simply played like absolute garbage. so now the series is tied 3-3 and game seven will determine who advances.
this happened last year as well against the panthers (bruins blew a 3-1 lead and did not advance) and series against toronto have historically gone to game seven and resulted in the leafs being eliminated. so theres a lot on the line here and the bruins are NOT showing up.

(very sorry for being long winded, i appreciate your takes being so rational <3) the more i think the more i wish our first round matchup had been anyone else like even the panthers would’ve beat this…the narrative around the bruins and leafs is just far too personal and emotionally charged to the old men who’ve lived through every series between the two in the past few decades and each time the frustration just piles on worse and finds a new person to be directed at. this is half inspired by the post you just reblogged but it’s kind of unbelievable to watch in real time sports analysts and media figureheads be swayed enough by the narrative around mitch (which has little to do with actually reality and more to do with him being who everyone decided was the easiest to mount decades worth of frustration onto) to actually be commenting on this stuff on like…live broadcasts and in public spaces. idk it’s just upsetting that the team is all so aware of it…auston’s quote in his exit about it bringing everyone down was the worst like…i can’t imagine how it is for mitch if it’s affecting the people around him. idk it’s unfortunate that this is going to be the conversation on loop until something happens and even then
AGREE TO ALL OF THIS. i'm not a big enough sports fan in general to observe the patterns of fans and how other teams and markets treat their star players, but like... this just feels so damn absurd. i know mitch has been a scapegoat for some reason or another basically every offseason since he signed his last deal, and no one has the ability to step back from the situation and see WHY that deal happened the way it did so they just blame the person whose name is on it, lol. it's silly. it's the culmination of lots of heartbreak. i think people would be saying all of this even if we lost to the panthers because they were saying similar things last year.
i do think it's important to think about the fact that this time of year is free fall as far as 'insiders' and analysts go. there's nothing to do.. most people aren't even discussing that stuff yet. even mitch saying they'd start talking about this week probably like... there's no way for elliotte friedman or any bitch out here acting like mitch is Probably gonna be okay with waiving and going bc "everyone" hates him to know ANYTHING at all, lol. all of their statements are prefaced with a whole lot of 'i think's and 'maybe's and it's so silly to listen to them talk just bc they like the sound of their own voice and their own specific news cycle for the year is coming to an end. i'm not sure what the leafs are going to do about mitch... i feel like friday's conference is gonna have me leaning one way or another abt a potential extension this summer vs letting him play into the year, but like. it is so fucking infuriating that he's become the scapegoat for it all when he IS the leafs. he's the heart of the team. he's the hometown boy. it's so baffling to me that he has to take the fall for it all rn and for grown mens inability to regulate emotion or use their brains. like no i don't have to accept that everyone processes losses of a fucking sports team differently if that method includes spewing vitriol or being a nasty person about your own specific team.

after 2 nights, 8 playoff games, 16 teams in various states of preparation for playoff hockey, many controversies and somehow finding the time to watch at least two periods of every game, i have my analysis of every game 1 of the stanley cup playoffs. these are just general thoughts, theres no possible way i could do detailed positional analysis when there were multiple games going on at the same time. i did my best, i hope you enjoy!
NIGHT ONE
carolina hurricanes vs new york islanders, 2-1
game at a glance: clean, traditional hockey
this was the first game i watched, and it was a good way to start of this year's playoffs! it wasn't the most exciting game, but the hurricanes were playing good, clean hockey with beautiful passing and heavy possession, the isles couldn't get the puck away for long enough to have many high danger chances. the canes defense, especially burns, had such a good night, which was good because raanta had a truly bad bounce. isles forwards were ghosts, they didn't produce anything of note, and shoutout to the canes' sebastian aho who scored the first game of the playoffs! the crowd in carolina was great, very loud, they were very optimistic and cheered for most of the plays, which obviously gave the canes lots of energy! definitely a good way to start!
boston bruins vs florida panthers, 3-1
game at a glance: expectations of greatness
after a historic regular season, anything short of winning the cup is a failure for this boston team. so much so, in fact, that the crowd was chanting "we want the cup" at the end of the third period. there's not much to say about this game, because boston is everything in hockey maximized to be the best it can be, and even missing their captain they played a remarkable game of hockey that was frankly a joy to watch. ullmark in boston's net was outstanding as he has been this season, and lyon in florida's net wasn't, which was to be expected. the crowd was in a celebratory mood, as if this game was a victory lap for the bruins. they can't get to comfortable, but this was fun hockey to watch and i thoroughly enjoyed every second of the two periods i tuned in to.
dallas stars vs minnesota wild, 2-3 (second overtime)
game at a glance: the powder keg exploded
this is a series that i thought would be boring, as neither team is known for super exciting hockey. boy was i wrong, this series i think is one of the most exciting for me right now. score was pretty even, with the teams trading blows, but what really got me was the physicality. both teams were starting fights, checking and hitting each other, and there were lots of penalties given out. the pavelski hit was a big moment in the game. in my opinion? a dirty hit, but it was legal as it was a shoulder-to-shoulder hit, just unfortunate that pavelski hit his head on the ice. going into double overtime just extended the battle, as each team worked to get that third goal which the wild eventually ground out. the goalies on both sides were stand out players, making multiple great saves each, and the man who should've been the difference maker, robertson, was a ghost after the end of the third. definitely a series to keep an eye on, i have a feeling it will be a close one.
edmonton oilers vs los angeles kings, 3-4 (overtime)
game at a glance: the great end-of-game collapse
have you ever seen the hope of tens of thousands of fans die in 20 minutes? the oilers started out so strong with a powerplay goal, and they kept the momentum until there was 10 minutes left in the 3rd period where they just fell apart. a disallowed goal in overtime that left time for the kings to win it was just the cherry on top of an epic collapse. draisaitl did his part for the oilers, but mcdavid didn't make an impact on the scoresheet or in the game outside a few pretty spins. korpisalo was great, and if he keeps playing like he did on monday he could drag the kings out of the first round. the atmosphere in edmonton was electric, they were so loud and when the oilers started their collapse, they started throwing beers on the ice. can't say they aren't passionate, but i think the pressure of doing well in a building that expected so much out of the oilers got in their head in overtime. hopefully, they smarten up for game 2
NIGHT TWO
new jersey devils vs new york rangers, 1-5
game at a glance: young upstarts against the old guard
this was a the most boring game i watched out of the 8, it just really didn't hold my attention at all. the crowd in jersey was lame. i said it! there were so many empty seats and rangers jerseys, and the people who were there were quiet (and left during the game!). as for the game, it was obvious that the rangers had playoff experience and were generally bigger and sturdier as a team, they bullied jersey's smaller forwards especially jack hughes the whole game, so they couldn't get any meaningful possession. igor shesterkin in net and the rangers defence blocking shots did most of the work in ensuring the low scoring chances for jersey, and the only goal, that came off a penalty shot, was more of a consolation than anything after the rangers had controlled the whole game. it will be interesting to see if the devils get more comfortable as they adapt to playoff hockey or if the rangers just eat them whole.
toronto maple leafs vs tampa bay lightning, 3-7
game at a glance: heavy is the king that sits upon the thone of expectations
this was the game i was looking forward to the most, and to be honest i was a bit disappointed. the leafs were so out of it, they looked like they were a minor league team playing against pros. they were able to use their speed and skill for a couple minutes at a time for a few goals, but they couldn't maintain it or use it on the power play to convert their chances, in addition to having absolutely horrendous goaltending (with little defensive support). tampa looked like the season vets they were, roughing the leafs up a bit and keeping to their rigid structure. it was obvious that tampa didn't have the same tricks and speed as the leafs, but by sticking to their structure and playing smart, safe hockey, they thrashed the leafs at home. the bunting hit was stupid, dirty and illegal. i hope he gets suspended, you can't elbow someone in the head and just get away with it. the leafs' lack of confidence wasn't helped by the crowd, who had very high energy but most of it was put into heckling the leafs, who were booed off the ice at the end of the first period. the expectations in toronto are so high, another failure after 19 years of failure is unacceptable. toronto needs to adapt to the pressure or it doesn't look good for them. very exciting watch, even though toronto looked so shaky.
vegas golden knights vs winnipeg jets, 1-5
game at a glance: they're the knights, but couldn’t protect their net
winnipeg looked ready for playoff hockey. vegas didn't. winnipeg looked fast, they played with discipline and their defence was exemplary. they could shut down knights chances and if one got through, hellebuyck in goal was able to shut it down. the knights continually tried to engage the jets in fights, but the jets kept composure and refused to engage. a masterclass in strategy, and the dominated the knights, who seemed to underestimate the jets. unpopular opinion: i really don't like the vegas atmosphere, it feels so aggressively like a less-enthusiastic american football game, i feel like im watching another sport. crowd wasn't great, knights weren't great, but the jets were incredible and their coach's system is absolutely stunning to watch. not my favourite series, but was interesting to see!
colorado avalanche vs. seattle kraken, 1-3
game at a glance: a selection of stars against a balance of powers
the avalanche, the reigning stanley cup champions, were exposed as very reliant on a few stars in this game. without those stars producing points, they couldn't effectively create chances or set the rhythm of the game. seattle, on the other hand, has a pretty evenly dispersed amount of talent between all the forward and defensive lines, which showed as they got scoring and playmaking from pretty much everyone on the team. their goalie grubauer having a great night in goal sealed the deal, and the kraken win their franchise's first playoff game ever. we will see how this series develops, as the avs are a much bigger, tougher team who could bully the kraken with their speed if they control play for long stretches of time. the kraken aren't shrinking violets though, and their ability to smoothly break the puck out of the neutral zone is composed and almost clinical with how they undressed the defensemen who weren't named cale makar. atmosphere was great, i love the crowd in colorado and the in-arena announcer has so many cool sound effects and songs they play which makes the game fun to watch.
TLDR
series i recommend if you want to watch beautiful hockey: boston bruins v florida panthers
series i recommend if you want a close series: toronto maple leafs vs tampa bay lightning
series i recommend if you want to see fights: dallas stars vs minnesota wild
i hope you enjoyed this analysis, and happy watching everyone!

i will say that the leafs did not look like the better team for the majority of that series and that whoever advances to the second round of the bruins vs panthers series has a good chance of making it to the ECF

Round One - Night One of the NHL Playoffs
-Florida Panthers lose to the Boston Bruins.  Panthers are a playoff pick.  Lots of people want the Bruins to choke.  It would be hilarious if they did. -Los Angeles Kings defeated the Edmonton Oilers in overtime.  Suck it Oilers.  Kings are a playoff pick. -Of course the New York Islanders lost to the Carolina Hurricanes.  The Hurricanes are a playoff pick. -Minnesota Wild defeated Dallas Stars in double overtime.  Ryan Hartman is the hero.  Filip Gustavsson was very good in net for the Wild.  This series can go either way for me.  But after this overtime win, I might be leaning towards the Wild as a playoff pick. A lot of physicality in some games.  Lets see what tomorrow brings with the Maple Leafs (my team) vs. Lightning, Avalanche vs. Kraken (leaning towards Avalanche for the playoffs), Rangers (playoff pick) vs. Devils, Golden Knights (playoff pick) vs. Jets.

Long answer: Winning the Cup is -- easier isn't the right word, but it's a lot more straightforward than people think it is.
If you ask a hundred hockey fans how to win the Stanley Cup, they will give you a hundred different answers, most of which are easily contradictable by looking at past Cup runs. "Have a good goalie," and Colorado won the Cup with a .905. "Build through the draft," and Vegas' leading scorers were a) an undrafted, undersized forward they got for nothing and b) someone they traded for. Every time people say something about how to win or not win, someone else comes along and wins the Cup in a way that disproves them.
Here is my "how-to:" be as good as possible as long as possible. It's way too broad and way too simple, but it's as close as I think you're going to get to actual reality. Just over 50% of Cup winners in the past 20-ish years are one of the top four teams in the NHL by standings. The remaining 50% is usually between numbers five and eight. It's also, of course, helpful to compete as long as possible rather than be the best of the best for a shorter period of time -- going from #4 overall to #1 overall increases your chances of winning the Cup far less than being #4 overall for a second year does.
The main issue obviously in playoffs versus regular season is that you are playing series as opposed to individual games, which gives way more opportunity to pre-scout and use specific tactics to highlight the weaknesses of the other teams.
This leads us to the Leafs. The old-school view of things really highlights things like "toughness" or "size" or "veteran presence" as opposed to measurable on-ice impact, which brings in people like Ryan Reaves (pure enforcer)(for WAY too much money) or Nick Foligno (did we seriously spend an entire first-round pick on him). The Leafs have gotten Bigger and Scarier and have not actually fixed the issue that has been plaguing them the entire time: the inability to mount a quick counterattack.
In theory, the Leafs are a high-offence team that isn't too shabby on defence either and has steady enough goaltending that rarely expects their netminders to steal a game but rarely expects them to blow one either. This holds up in the regular season; they have been a top-five team offensively pretty consistently over the past several years, as top-heavy as it is (this means both fewer points of failure in case of injury *and* higher peak when firing on all cylinders. win some lose some, although it's the Leafs so there's the Curse so it's always lose some). However, they have a really bad transition and breakout game -- ability to move the puck out of their own zone and into the offensive zone -- and this is the crucial thing that absolutely Kicks Their Ass. Over the past four series (2022 vs Lightning, 2023 vs Lightning, 2023 vs Panthers, 2024 vs Bruins) the inability to "go forward" after they have been knocked back is THE thing that kills them. It stifles their offence and forces them to rely on their middling defence and goaltending -- and because this is THE PLAYOFFS everyone else's offence is going to be better than their defence and goaltending.
This is accentuated by their coaching -- the first few years of playoffs (2017, 18, 19) were under the abusive piece of shit Babcock, and the rest of them were under Keefe, whom I actually do like in all cases except playoffs. During the regular season, the Leafs are a team that is designed to win games 5-3. It theoretically goes to stand that a team can also win in playoffs with this strategy too, but Keefe apparently thought that Not Doing That was going to be his winning play -- he constrained the Leafs' offence in favour of tightening their defence, reducing the effectiveness of their biggest strength and making their biggest weakness even worse. Safe is dead.
This is also why players such as William Nylander, Matthew Knies and Morgan Rielly tend to be the Leafs' best playoff performers -- all three players are good in breakout and transition, especially Nylander who is one of the best in the league at it. Matthews is not much of a puck-mover and Marner is "just okay" at it, but both of those two were the biggest subjects of Keefe's mandate that everyone switch to defence, so their strengths were stifled the most.
Here's how I would fix it: coaching number one, which they've already done. Fine okay cool great. Berube has Cup pedigree, which is okay, but ultimately I just hope that whatever he does he plays the rookies and makes the team do Offence.
Number two transition. Get them on that metaphorical HRT!!!! Jeff Skinner would have been a perfect Leaf -- he adds extra finishing ability and has some transition skills. The defence is arguably more important though: I am firmly in favour of having more offence from D, both in players who are more willing to actually try shooting and scoring And in players who can create that breakout pass. Tanev is great, although he's a million years old; not sure how I feel about Hakanpaa and OEL (frankly I would have preferred Montour).
Number three exorcism. Obviously.
hi! love your blog! i’m watching hockey for the first time this upcoming season, and i had a question. a bit of a loaded ask, and i’m not sure if you’ve already answered questions like this before, so i hope you don’t mind! but asking in the most respectful way possible, what is wrong with the leafs? what are their most prevalent issues? like, if you instantaneously had all the power/money/etc etc, what all would you do to Fix them? from my purely spectatorial stance, it seems that they’ve got a lot of really great players, so what always inhibits their overall success so much, especially in the playoffs? thank you !!
Medium answer: The traditional focus and somewhat of an old-boys-club in their front office and management combined with the fact that they don't actually need to win games to sell tickets means that while they're good, they're not as smart as they think they are. They've also definitely had a couple just purely unlucky runs in there.
Short answer: The Curse

I'm proud of the Leafs finally getting to the second round! Know it would be really funny if they get swept in the second round, especially if they were against Boston. (Like what happened to the Panthers last year, they also broke their curse of being stuck in the first round in forever only to immediately get swept by the bolts in the 2nd round) I would love if the Leafs went all the way but at the same time it would be so funny to me of they just got destroyed.
Hello! It would be hilarious if the Leafs get swept in the second round, but I'm also legit curious about a world where they beat the Bruins. As it is Bruins vs Panthers is going to a Game 7, and I'm so EXCITED for it. The most likely result is the Bruins wins against my Kittens and advances to the second round where they will curb stomp the Leafs bcos the Leafs are probably still out of sorts about getting to the second series.
My team in this playoffs is the Dallas Stars, if they get knocked out I'm gonna support the Leafs full on bcos I love the suffering of every other teams' fanbase.
I want the Oilers to lose bcos it is honestly the funniest thing for me. But if my fuckup Stars loses (NOT against the Oilers) I might truly start campaigning for a Oilers vs Leafs finals. Bcos let the world BURN!
BURN!!!

So it’s halfway through my first hockey playoff round one and I want to record my thoughts on each match up to see how if my feelings change/shift.
Eastern Conference
-Canes vs islanders- boring boring boring. I really want to like the Canes but BORING. Both teams do have at least one really pretty player though. But I’m five tried to watch multiple games and just can’t.
-Toronto V lightening (there is gonna be no rhyme or reason in my naming conventions… it’s just how I think of the team)… I haven’t watched any, I feel bad for Toronto bc even their fans don’t think they can win. I do t really care about this series.
-devils v. Rangers- Jack Hughes bitchiness with media makes me laugh. I think the Rangers are thrives bc they stole the Texas rangers name so therefore want the devils to win so the fake!rangers can once again disappear. Not a fan of the fake!rangers and after trade deadline day I started feeling that they are massively overrated… not sure if it’s true bc they were predicted to crush the devils and it’s a 2-2 series…. Probably gonna watch the highlights of these games but I don’t care enough for anything more.
-bruins v panthers. I think the Bruins are massively overrated. Like they are good but I don’t think they are the best thing ever and I’m not super impressed by Ullmark. He kind of completely lost game five of the series for his team and it’s both funny/sad. Also I think it’s dumb af to count the panthers out bc when I first started watching hockey/listening to hockey podcasts and just obsessing over the sport. Everyone said they were in a rebuild year and had fucked up the Tkachuck trade and weren’t even gonna make the playoffs. Then everyone said they were gonna be swept in round one, that it would maybe (maybe) go to five games… we’ll game six is Friday. So I think that they are hungry and Jane something to prove.
Western Conference
Oilers v LA kings- fingers crossed for the oilers bc I want more GIFs of Leon drasaitl (I think that’s how you spell his last name) on my dash. He’s sooo gorgeous. Like seriously unfairly hot. The kings are kind of a nothing team to me so I reall do not care abt them and I think that the announcers kiss Connor McDavid’s butt a lot… but Leon??? He’s unfair and unreal.
Jets V golden Knights- I want the knights to win bc the stars have a great record against them. I don’t really care about any of the players though Jack Eichel has a spot in my heart bc of fanfic. But not enough for me to watch his games.
Avs V Kraken- the Kraken bore me and it makes me sad bc I love their sweaters. I love their three star tradition. I like their mascot. And I feel like the avs are massively overrated bc of their win last year when this year’s team seems okay? Like a few great players but over all very meh. But the Kraken put me to sleep.
Stars (babies) v Wild- Kay this is the one series that I’ve watched the majority of… like I missed one game and im not willing to watch it (game three) but im gonna watch highlights. So I want the stars to win bc hometown team, babies, pretty hockey, love them, they deserve it, never done anything wrong (okay I disagree no penalty on the hit in Reaves last night or Suter’s everything)… oetter is amazing. Miro is phenomenal. Roope is unreal. Robo is (sucking according to podcasts but still has at least one point per game.)… I think it takes class to go out against a team that gave one of your guys a concussion with no major repercussions and still play good hockey. However, all that being said if the Wild win games six and seven I’m gonna be cheering for them to win the cup. If they were playing any other team I’d be cheering g for them right now. They play the kind of hockey that catches my attention bc I like pretty skating, good passes, unreal goalkeeping, and lots of hits. I don’t want hurt players but physical hockey is fun. It’s why I like the game. I’m gonna need to watch their games next season too bc they intrigue me sooo much. I also feel like they are kind of an overlooked team with a lot of potential. So if they weren’t playing the stars I’d be sooo much happier.
(Also I think the Avs are dumb for not throwing the last game against the predators. They have a much better regular season record against the Wild then the kraken. And would have maybe been done with their series at this point bc the wild really sucked against the Avs)
