Food is always a philosophy for me...the philosophy is 'hunger is the best sauce'. I don't remember the name of this food that we took on our way to Mackay from Brisbane through Bruce Highway. We were so hungry that we could eat a horse and we were looking for a place to eat something. We had to refuel our car as well. Finally we found a Puma service station with a little outdoor space to sit. We refueled our car and went inside to get whatever kind of thing to eat. I don't remember the ingredients of this food because we just ate them without trading words. I tried to replicate this food at home later with fried smashed potatoes on mildly toasted bread but that was nothing close to the Puma one. Australia - Queensland - The Whitsunday Islands - February 2015

So I hadn’t seen some of my best friends, Rosie and Hannah, since July 2014 and we were all planning to meet up to experience The Whitsunday’s together. I was absolutely ecstatic! They had packed their jobs in and decided to travel around Australia, New Zealand and the USA for 3 months!

We had been out for Jess’s 26th birthday the night before our flight, so we were feeling a bit ropey to say the least. To make it a bit better we had two flights to catch, one to Brisbane and then from Brisbane to Proserpine. The very same day Cyclone Marcia had hit Queensland, causing havoc with flights and travel throughout the state.

After an outrageously bumpy journey to Brisbane, Jess filling 4 sick bags and fighting our way through a hideous amount of rain to Proserpine, we arrived to gorgeous sunshine on Airlie Beach! Within hours we were with the girls sailing across the beautiful emerald ocean to The Whitsunday Islands.

Over the next couple of days we experienced the stunning islands, the one and only Whitehaven Beach (where the sand was so white you could clean silver and whiten your teeth), and snorkelled to see some of the most beautiful marine life. We trekked through jungle, saw giant turtles, tropical fish and experienced some of the most colourful coral we had ever seen. We partied beneath thousands of stars, met new friends and had humongous fish jumping around the boat throughout the night. (Though I’d say they were dolphins or baby sharks!)

After 2 nights on the sailing boat, experiencing motion sickness on a whole new level and having the most incredible time, our Whitsundays experience had come to an end.

Sydney civilisation awaited us, but not without a bit of drama (as usual). Due to Cyclone Marcia, all greyhound buses were cancelled! There we were, driving down Bruce Highway in only what I could call a monster truck, which was absolutely ideal for me considering I hadn’t driven for two years! It was 36 degrees, eagles were circling us and the only tunes that would come out of our shack of a radio was Aussie country music…picture that!

2000 km on Brucie, driving becomes a way of life. In Northern Queensland, the main encounter is infinite rainforest, sugarcane and banana plantations, spiced up with all kinds of extremely nice “Mates”, who take care of whatever business they are into. Trains carry sugarcane south and concrete north, no people. This still feels very much like the last frontier for people with a gold rush mentality. Once you pass the tropic of Capricorne, vegetation changes from tropical to pasture and cattle, more people on the streets and businesses, we know of.
