Being familiar with BrownMark I immediately requested the ARC of My Life in the Purple Kingdom from NetGalley. I received this copy in exchange for an honest review with no promise of writing a positive one.

This is the story of another person from Prince's bizarre court. Mark Brown was a young naive musician who became enthralled with an individual he viewed as a musical genius. Once he discovered his love for the guitar it compelled him to not only master the instrument but to pursue a career in a city where venues were primarily segregated.

After being taking through a strange audition Mark replaced Andre' Cymone as the bass guitarist in Prince's band. He is then renamed BrownMark and subjected to physical, financial, and psychogical abuse by a man that he still considers a brother.

It's amazing to me that there is another account in the world detailing the bizarre behavior of someone who was clearly an insecure narcissist who only cared about making money. I really loved the details about Mark's childhood and family life. I admire his ability to forgive Prince for his irreprehensible behavior. Mostly I am impressed at the fact that he learned from his mistakes and went on to establish a career in spite of being cast into the shadows.

I don't think I've ever really expressed this in verbose terms here, but discovering Prince/The Revolution's music over the last two years has been one of the greatest joys of my life. I have spent a countless amount of time just intently listening to albums, live shows, rehearsals and other recordings in absolute disbelief that music could sound so good. I have never experienced music like I have experienced it with Prince. It's somehow strangely helped me unlock new parts of myself, new emotions, new confidence and personality. I couldn't be the me I am now without Prince. This morning I was reading this interview from a few years ago with all the members of The Revolution after Prince's passing, and I was so touched reading how after all these decades they are still so close and such a family with so much love for each other. They remind me of my college friends and I, just a group of goofy kids enjoying life and making music together. I don't know why I gravitated towards their music so intensely but it's been so much fun and now all my friends think of me when they hear Prince on the radio. And they occasionally humor me when I send them an obscure 15 minute jam session of Noon Rendezvous. I'm really happy to help spread their music to other Gen Zs. Just happy to have the pleasure of being alive at the same time as these amazing folks and to witness their genius. 💜
