Edward the Elder
Edward the Elder (r. 899-924) was the son of Alfred the Great (r. 871-899) and the King of the Anglo-Saxons in the early 10th century. He is known for his military victories over the Vikings of East Anglia and the East Midlands and for consolidating his dynasty's control over southern England.
In 865, about a decade before Edward was born, the Great Heathen Army invaded England, destroying the royal dynasties of several English kingdoms, including East Anglia, Mercia and Northumbria and establishing Viking rule across these territories. It fell upon Edward's father, King Alfred of Wessex, to lead the English resistance. He defeated the Vikings at the Battle of Edington in 878 and agreed to a peace treaty with their leader, Guthrum (d. 890), who retreated east to rule over much of the territory conquered by the great army, commonly referred to as 'The Danelaw'. Alfred would spend the next two decades fortifying Wessex, reforming the army and promoting learning and literacy amongst his subjects. He also brought Mercia under his overlordship, after which he took the title 'King of the Anglo-Saxons', denoting his rule over both the Mercians and the West Saxons.
Edward succeeded his father in 899. Most of what we know of his reign comes from a collection of land charters and the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, which presents him as a relentless and successful warrior-king. His epithet, 'the Elder', was not used during his life but was later used to distinguish him from his great-grandson, Edward the Martyr, King of England (r. 975-978). Though well-regarded as a ruler by medieval chroniclers and modern historians, Edward often remains in the shadow of his more illustrious father. However, there has been more interest in Edward recently due to the TV series The Last Kingdom, in which he is portrayed by Timothy Innes. Yet, the show depicts Edward as a king struggling to step out of his father's shadow, with many of his achievements being accredited to the show's protagonist, Uhtred of Bebbanburg.
Early Life
Edward was born c. 874-877. His parents, Alfred and Ealhswith (d. 902), a Mercian noblewoman, were married in 868. In addition to Edward, the couple had four more children: Aethelflaed (d. 918), who married the Ealdorman of Mercia and later ruled Mercia herself; Aethelgifu, who became the Abbess of Shaftesbury; Aelfthryth (d. 929) who married the Count of Flanders and another son, Aethelweard (d. 920). The earliest mention of Edward in contemporary sources comes from Bishop Asser – a Welsh priest and scholar at Alfred's court – in his work the Life of King Alfred. Asser recounts that Edward spent his youth at the king's court, studying religious and secular texts and was taught to show "humbleness, affability, and gentleness towards all." Edward was also trained in warfare, and while still in his teens, led the West Saxon army to victory over the Vikings at the Battle of Farnham in 893. Around the same time, he appears to have become a regular member of the king's council and married a woman named Ecgwynn, of whom we know little about, although the couple had a son, Aethelstan (d. 939), and a daughter, Edith.

In the final years of his father's reign, Edward was granted the title 'rex' (king), suggesting he had been appointed co-king alongside his father or, more likely, was given his own kingdom in Kent to provide him with experience ruling before he succeeded his father. Primogeniture (father-to-son succession) had not firmly been established in Wessex; succession was still elective to a certain degree, with the crown passing to the aetheling (prince), favoured by the nobility. Edward's main rival for the throne was his cousin Aethelwold (d. 902), the son of Alfred's brother, King Aethelred of Wessex (r. 865-871). As much of the West Saxon nobility owed their position to Alfred, they were naturally inclined to support Edward's succession, but his experience in warfare and royal administration went a long way to secure their support.

Soundwave's passiveness when it comes to other's mistreatment of Ravage has become an object of discussion lately. Here are my two cents:
Perhaps it is my bias towards the magnificence that is Soundwave's superiority, but I argue that his lack of direct action to counter both Starscream and Shockwave when the mistreatment happens does not display a docility in Soundwave's character that is worth criticising.
For one, we know that Soundwave is very calculative. He acts only after consideration of every possible outcome and never on impulse.
Tumblr media
Considering that Starscream clearly outranked Soundwave back then as well as Starscream's volatile temper, Starscream would have definitely considered it insubordination if Soundwave were to oppose him over something that does not obviously benefit the Decepticon cause; speaking up for Ravage would have been seen as more of a personal matter than a professional matter. Furthermore, although it would mean the revival of vital Decepticon personnel, it would also mean less resources for the larger Skywarp who has teleporting capabilities ("What?! You want to start with the smallest one?") in addition to a personal connection with Starscream. Thus, risking Starscream's ire for the alternative might have led to both Soundwave and Ravage sustaining even more injuries which would be the worst possible outcome in light of their lack of resources and Ravage's already severe comatose state. Therefore, knowing all this, Soundwave rightfully kept his mouth shut and his hands to himself until he was certain he would be able stand up for Ravage without repercussions i.e. when he himself took over the Decepticons as leader, such that no one else would be able to rebuke him for his decisions.
When Shockwave came into the picture, Soundwave fell back on his familiar position as a follower, placing Shockwave in charge. Although there was no official transfer of leadership, it is easy to see that Shockwave outranks Soundwave since his arrival to Earth from his commanding and decision-making attitude towards Soundwave and the sudden reduction in Soundwave's initiatives (he no longer has plans of his own). One could even argue that Soundwave took so long to overthrow Starscream because of his preference to follow rather than lead, as evident in his utter lack of leadership opportunities in other continuities. One could also argue that he contacted Shockwave so quickly to rid himself of the mantle of leadership and pass it to someone else. With Shockwave's rank in mind, when he threatens to toss Ravage into the incinerator, Soundwave is once again put into the difficult position of choosing between Ravage and his superior. Naturally, he is bound to hesitate; he wouldn't outright pull a blaster on Shockwave, who also happens to be his "brother" in arms. Soundwave isn't going to rip out Shockwave's singular optic like he did to Starscream.
Tumblr media
However, it is worth noting Soundwave's body language. When Shockwave first grabs Ravage, Soundwave's shock and some indignance can be interpreted from his braced position (bent legs, partially raised arms, awkward head position as if surprised). The unexpected callousness of his "brother" could have contributed to his hesitation. Additionally, instead of depicting him standing obediently aside to allow Shockwave to do as he pleased, this reaction demonstrates Soundwave's displeasure and disagreement with Shockwave's behaviour. This is not a subservient subordinate allowing himself and his team to be walked all over, this is a soldier that is so respectful and logical to a fault also momentarily caught off guard.
Tumblr media
Following that, in the subsequent panel, Soundwave's arm is outstretched, as if he is reaching out to Shockwave to stop him. Of course, he doesn't, because Shockwave is now his superior, but you can almost here the frantic scramble of incoherent protests that might have stumbled out of Soundwave's vocaliser if he was any less disciplined of a bot. Therefore, I assert that Soundwave would have loved to protest against the mistreatment of Ravage. However, he is held back by his obligation as a member of the Decepticons rather than their leader as well as his comprehensive considerations for the best course of action.
Simply put, to criticise Soundwave for being passive without considering the difficult situation his faces and the complicated background behind it lacks the nuance that would justify his behaviour. That being said, one could certainly go down to the root of the issue which is Soundwave's preference for being a follower and his lack of daring, which I believe is a far more valid argument.

Ok absolutely no one asked but i'm going to talk about Identically Different anyway because twinyards brainrot.
As a changeling, as a faerie, andrew can not lie, and can not break deals he makes. So when aaron continues to spout lies big and small, continues to seemingly easily circumvent deals because the wording wasn't careful enough, it feels like deliberate slow torture to andrew.
He does not know he is fae. He thought he had finally found the answer for why he was different. He thought he had just been missing his other half, thought that meeting his twin would mean finally having someone like him, someone who understands.
But aaron doesn't seem to understand or so andrew hopes, because if aaron does understand but actively chooses to do this, andrew does not know if he can survive. Andrew has known since he was seven that even though he never lies, even though he cannot lie, people don't believe him. He just thought aaron would.
They spend the first couple of years spiraling downwards in eachother's orbits. Andrew offers protection, aaron accepts it but then doesn't like the forms it takes. Aaron says "we'll stick together but you can't kill anyone again" and andrew stupidly agreeing, thinking sticking together meant just them (since he's not aware of his own nature he doesnt know how to sway an agreement in his own favor except with careful wording).
For a while, especially through college, they make more deals, small agreements and promises, each trying to asser their will. Neither of them really get what they want, both are unhappy. Growing resentment and anger. And then they stop talking to eachother.
They continue living together. Aaron wants to move out, get away, be anywhere else but he can't because they need to stick together. Andrew wants to leave a different way but he's not allowed to either.
They can't be apart but living even living together they're as estranged as can be, practically strangers to eachother.
And then andrew's world gets turned upside down by a strange redhead and he finally starts understanding himself and maybe he could still have a brother even if that's not what they really are.

"A tyrant after the manner of her father."
As one of the children of Offa of Mercia and his celebrated queen Cynethryth, Eadburh inherited an elevated view of queenship. By the time of Eadburh’s marriage, the office of queen was developing into something more akin to the position recognised in the 973 Regularis Concordia, which recognised queens with their own anointing ceremony and made them, like the king, protectors of monastic houses. The queenship Eadburh had modelled to her in the person of her mother was influential, involved in the everyday running of the court, and possessed considerable independent power.
Eadburh’s marriage to Beorhtric does not usually crop up in discussions of conventional peaceweaving marriages because she is most usually considered in terms of political biases reacting poorly against women: her story is recorded in a history written by the victors, in which she is both nemesis and victim. Nevertheless, when considered closely, her marriage does appear to fit the characteristics of a peaceweaving marriage. Her union with Beorhtric seems to have been intended to draw the two peoples more closely together, especially considering the adverse history between the two kingdoms.
The peaceweaving aspect of the marriage becomes more apparent when the considering the relationship between Offa and his son-in-law. Beorhtric’s succession to the West Saxon throne seems to have ushered in a spirit of cooperation between the two traditionally rival kingdoms. In 789, Offa banished Ecgberht, later king of Wessex, and the grandfather of King Alfred. Although he clearly also benefited from the removal of a rival for the throne, Beorhtric enforced this exile as well. There are no formal documents outlining what the relationship between Beorhtric and Offa constituted, although S.E. Kelly detects ‘some hint of subservience … betrayed in the three surviving charters of Beorhtric, where the royal styles are curiously humble and tentative’. Asser’s text similarly confirms the close political relationship between Offa and Beorhtric – which, according to traditions handed down by Ecgberht’s line, is attributed to Eadburh. Asser writes how Offa made the match: ‘Beorhtric, king of the West Saxons, received in marriage [Offa’s] daughter, called Eadburh. As soon as she had won the king’s friendship, and power throughout almost the entire kingdom, she began to behave like a tyrant after the manner of her father’ [...].
The account given by Alfred to Asser is designed to discredit Eadburh and explain why the office of queen had been abandoned in Wessex, and does so by undermining the wife of a dynastic rival. There is considerable bias in seeking to discredit both Beorhtric and Eadburh, but the account fails to conceal that Eadburh probably was, at least at first, a rather effective queen. Before her marriage, she had witnessed charters as the daughter of the king and queen of Mercia. To be able to muster power of the sort attributed to her suggests that she had good relationships: she won the friendship of the king, her most important relationship. For Eadburh to have power throughout the kingdom, she must have maintained a good relationship with her father and brother to protect her, but possibly also forged new relationships by a mixture of patronage and promoting their interests at court. These are skills she may have learned from her mother Cynethryth. [However, Cynethryth] had the distinct advantage of having a Mercian background herself, and as a result did not have to negotiate the difficult position of mediating between her natal family and identity and her status as queen of a different kingdom in quite the same way.
The West Saxon traditions handed on by Ecgberht’s descendants clearly blame Offa and his tyrannical ways for influencing his daughter’s practice of queenship [and indicates that she might have acted as ‘an active representative of Mercian interests at the West Saxon court', as Barbara York points out]. On closer consideration, Eadburh is far more likely to have emulated her mother’s practice. Unusually, Asser and Alfred ascribe Eadburh’s monstrous behaviour as deriving from her father’s model of kingship. Other texts tend to emphasise feminine monstrous and overly assertive behaviour, especially where Offa’s queen Cynethryth is concerned.
Misogynistic leanings influenced the way that both Cynethryth and her daughter Eadburh are portrayed. Traditions at St Albans blamed Cynethryth for the murder of Æthelberht, drawing on a biblical tradition associated with John the Baptist. It is hardly surprising, therefore, when Eadburh herself was blamed for the deaths of unnamed nobles as well as Beorhtric and a well-loved West Saxon noble, probably Worr, as recorded in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle entry for 800 [...].
The accounts of Eadburh following the death of Beorhtric come solely from the West Saxon dynasty hostile to her husband and father, but other independent sources may corroborate certain details. The account of her behaviour at Charlemagne’s court in Asser’s text may contain some kernels of truth, but seems to be a wild attempt to further discredit Eadburh and her Mercian heritage. After her husband’s death, Eadburh fled with a quantity of treasure, which may have either been her own treasure, or the royal treasury. The West Saxon tradition states that Eadburh later sought refuge in Francia, where she came to Charlemagne’s court and was offered a choice of husbands – either Charlemagne, or one of his sons. In the story, Eadburh selfishly chose the younger option, and as punishment for her selfish choice, was given neither, but instead received a nunnery (V. Alfredi, c. 15). There is a kernel of truth at the core of this tradition: Offa and Charlemagne had been in negotiations for one of the Mercian princesses to wed to one of the Frankish king’s sons. The talks broke down, reportedly, because Offa insisted on a reciprocal Frankish princess bride for his son Ecgfrith. The attribution of Beorhtric’s death to Eadburh is difficult to either confirm or deny: Ealhflæd’s involvement in Peada’s death demonstrates that a queen could be involved in her husband’s death, and poison was a favoured accusation to use against unpopular queens from antiquity into the modern age*. The account contains yet one more kernel of truth: Eadburh’s geographic peregrinations. Asser’s account in Chapter 15 of his Life of Alfred records that Eadburh spent some time as an abbess in a Frankish abbey before being ejected for having an affair with one of her countrymen, and ended her life begging in Pavia. Janet Nelson’s analysis of this information points out that there are some reasons to believe Asser’s version: Frankish abbesses tended to be royal appointments, and an entry in the Reicheneau Liber Vitae has an ‘Eadburg’ who was abbess of a convent in Lombardy. Pavia was on the traditional pilgrimage route to Rome, which was popular with early English pilgrims. Eadburh’s continental peregrinations also fit with the developments in Mercia following her marriage. In 796, Offa died, leaving the throne to his son and heir Ecgfrith. Unfortunately, Ecgfrith passed away within months, ending the dynasty. With the passage of the throne to a relatively distant relative in Coenwulf, there was little to offer Eadburh on her return. Like Osthryth, the collapse of her family caused by the deaths of her nearest male relatives weakened her options to a delicate situation, thereby obliging her to seek assistance abroad.
Eadburh is vilified in the West Saxon sources as a wicked queen whose appetite for fame and power were her undoing. Because Offa helped drive Ecgberht from Wessex and into exile, the royal line descended from Ecgberht largely effaced the office of queen, recently expanded and abused by Offa’s daughter, from the way they ruled. Asser comments how the West Saxon kings following Ecgberht did not follow the custom of nominating the king’s wife as a queen as a response to Eadburh’s wickedness. He remarks on ‘the (wrongful) custom of that people … [f]or the West Saxons did not allow the queen to sit beside the king, nor indeed did they allow her to be called “queen”, but rather “king’s wife”.
Stefany Wragg, Early English Queens, 650-850: Speculum Reginae
*The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, when writing about Beorhtric's death in 802, makes no mention of any alleged treachery and/or poison on Eadburh's part. This is in sharp contrast to the way chronicles did almost unanimously emphasize the role of another queen - Ealhflæd - in the murder of her husband. It's possible, though unlikely, that Beorhtric may have simply died naturally. Alternatively, considering the death of his Mercian protector Offa just a few years before his death, considering that he was succeeded immediately by Ecgberht, an enemy he had exiled from the kingdom, and considering how there was apparently a battle between a Mercian and Wiltshire ealdorman on the same day Ecgberht ascended the throne (resulting in Mercian defeat), it's quite possible that the cause for Beorhtric's downfall was dynastic, and more akin to a traditional defeat or deposition, than any conveniently miscalculated treachery by his wife. In this context, Eadburh's sudden flight abroad with a quantity of treasure after his death resembles that of other queens who witnessed the downfall of their dynasties and had to flee to protect themselves - though Eadburh is one of the rare few whose birth family had also been extinguished, presumably leaving her with no home or support at all.

Also for the WIP game:
How the team studies
I know they're probably studying, but the "how" has me curious 👀
Okay!
So, this was just me coming up with different methods for how each member of the main cast usually studies. Each have their own methods that factor into their personality and weaknesses/strengths/interests. Character quirks basically.
For context: Karim is good at drawing, and his memory relies mostly on visuals rather than text, so he draws quick and rough sketches/diagrams to remember things better, or to mark the important stuff. He has another habit of writing stuff down a ridiculous number of times because using his hands works wayy better for him than verbally.
He also consumes an unholy amount of caffeine (like both coffee and energy drink straight after) because he pretty much has an addiction to that stuff. He might get a small snack if he's feeling up to it. He also uses painkillers because studying gives him migraines. He takes short and frequent breaks.
Nour is a guy who likes to eat. His crazy fast metabolism helps. So you bet anything that the guy is going to eat a ton of snacks while he works. He likes to stick all these random, brightly coloured post-its in his textbooks to make brief notes. He changes positions a lot, and he's really weird about it. See, he's pretty flexible, so you might find him hanging upside down while reading something. He generally has a good memory, so he only needs updates on the details (hence the post-its). His handwriting sucks. He takes a few very long breaks and works for long periods of time.
Asser prefers to watch videos to study because it helps him understand better than reading, since obviously it stimulates more senses. He takes notes on a computer because surprisingly he's faster at typing than writing. See, he's the team's designated hacker, and he's been hacking even before he met them, so his fingers are super used to it. He needs sugar to function, so he usually ends up drinking very sugary tea or eating something equally sweet.
He takes one break because it's really just him falling asleep in the middle.
Laila procrastinates a lot. So when she actually gets to the studying part, she has to do all the work in blocks. She doesn't eat or drink anything aside from a big cup of coffee. Just one. She doesn't have her brother's addiction. She has the best memory out of all of them, so just reading the material aloud well is enough for her to memorise it. In rare cases, she recites things. Whatever she solves, she scribbles down furiously. She writes very fast and it's somehow neat. She's a one-night crammer, but has the best grades. Her 'breaks' are honestly just procrastination.
Thanks for asking! I hope this satisfied your curiousity. ❤️

The Battle of Ashdown, was a West Saxon victory over a Danish Viking army on about 8 January 871. The location of Ashdown is not known, but may be Kingstanding Hill in Berkshire. Other writers place the battle near Starveall, a short distance north of the village of Aldworth and south east of Lowbury Hill.
The West Saxons were led by King Æthelred and his younger brother, the future King Alfred the Great, while the Viking commanders were Bagsecg and Halfdan. The battle is described in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and Asser's Life of King Alfred.

In Medias Res: A KOTOR Fanfiction - Chapter Two
A chapter that leaves Corem's point of view. It's weird, I know. It's a chapter I wrote when my story adopted a rather omniscient point of view. It certainly doesn't fit in with a story that runs through the eyes of a single character, but never mind! I liked that small passage. The scene takes place in the Commander's quarters, where Carth Onasi somehow gauges Bastila Shan.
Tumblr media
There was a sound, then another, and another. They were muffled. Finally, an insolent clarity settled into her mind, thundering and hurting.
At last she ventured to remember. Robust boots pounding on steel; the rhythm they imposed drew her back into that memory she kept buried in the depths of her being. Images flashed back to her, fleeting, then more and more detailed. She saw herself again, stepping with haste and determination, accompanied by three of her brothers-in-arms, whose expressions were simultaneously frozen and filled with emotion; fear, that could not be anything else. That form of fear, preceding the abdication, which ran through the whole being the moment it realised that death was just around the corner, and that it was now only a matter of minutes. Memories were rushing back, as if her brain had ruled to take complete power and was having fun dragging her soul and mind to their darkest reminiscences, meticulously chosen. She could see the scene again. The corridor, the hatch opening onto the ship's deck. Dead bodies, the smell of blood, a tall, dark figure, his glowing red lightsaber barely raised, yet so threatening.
On the Endar Spire, Commander Bastila Shan was brought out of her torpor by the metallic sound of the butt of a weapon banging lightly against the door of her quarters. She took a few seconds to regain her composure, reached for her lightsaber, which she fastened carefully to her belt buckle, and walked the few steps to the door of the higher-ranking officers' quarters she was occupying, then opened it with a sense of relief; she couldn't bear to replay those times, but sometimes, despite her Jedi training, she couldn't find the will to keep those images at bay. She praised the Force for having been interrupted for the umpteenth time.
The door opened to reveal a guard of nearly adolescent age, who, at the sight of Bastila Shan, assumed a solemn stance, expressing an almost disproportionate respect for the young woman. She smiled imperceptibly, somewhat amused by the exemplary behaviour of the very young soldier.
« Commander, Lieutenant Onasi requests to speak with you. »
Bastila made no immediate response. She knew that talking to the officer could be an unpleasant experience. She was well aware that he resented the Jedi interfering in the affairs of the Republic's military. And, to a certain extent, she could understand his views. However, she was convinced that she had a place on the Endar Spire; there was a mission to be carried out.
« Do you know what he wants? » Bastila asked rather reluctantly.
« No, Ma'am. »
With resignation, the young Jedi allowed the guard to let the officer in. The man, after bowing respectfully to his Commander, complied and walked away from the woman's quarters towards the hallway where Onasi was waiting. Bastila stepped back and used the brief remaining time to slip on the Commander's jacket she had been given shortly after landing on the Endar Spire - the one she had worn during dinner. She was somewhat ashamed to admit it, but was slightly entertained by her decision to show up in that outfit. It was obvious that Onasi considered this action to be another provocation on her part, and Bastila felt a childish urge to upset him more than he already was.
She sat back down at her desk and resumed her duties when the sound of someone's footsteps could be heard. The young woman lifted her eyes and spotted the officer leaning lazily on the door frame, apparently awaiting Bastila's permission to enter. The Jedi saved herself a few long seconds to study the man before addressing him. She needed to assert her authority, even if it meant taking small, futile actions. This was especially true with Carth Onasi, who was a highly experienced soldier: the officer was in his early forties, while Bastila Shan was barely over a quarter of a century old; an age gap that intensified the general discomfort of the whole situation.
Bastila noticed that he had most likely chosen to compete in the same game as she had. He had obviously renounced the need to wear the standard outfit. He was presenting himself to her in this same thick orange jacket: a pilot's uniform. An outfit that was normally quite inappropriate in the presence of a higher ranking officer, especially when the man was not expected to pilot any kind of ship. The fact was, however, that Bastila Shan remained an untrained officer, and she was well aware of this. Every aspect of her suggested that this high status that had been granted to her on a provisional basis could be seriously challenged; she had never belonged to the Republic army and, although she had been taught how to fight, she had never received any instruction in the military arts, and her youth hardly pleaded her case either. Bastila Shan was not even a true Jedi yet; in spite of all her talents, she remained just a Padawan, and there was no intention of taking the next step yet. The war was consuming too much of the attention of the Masters of the Order to bother with that for the time being.
Onasi also took a couple of seconds to examine the woman staring at him with what looked to him like a rather exasperated frown. He assumed that she was waiting for him to speak first. Deep inside, Onasi was delighted. He held no particular dislike for Bastila Shan as a person - despite her somewhat disconcerting arrival - but this situation did not suit him at all; he was perfectly aware that she had no part in this mess and that she had certainly not chosen to be in that place at that particular time. However, if he had the opportunity to annoy the Jedi leaders through her, he would certainly do so unashamedly.
Carth Onasi grinned playfully as he realised that his Commander had once again been careful to appear in an outfit that she was not entitled to wear. He could have been extremely upset, but he preferred to view the act philosophically. After all, he was playing the same game as she was at this hour. Perhaps they had more in common than he imagined.
Bastila Shan, still waiting for some sort of interaction, stood up and, both hands firmly pressed against the top of her desk, she kept staring at the man - he was still leaning against the door frame and was silently watching the woman. He could now better see the Jedi, and was once again struck by her youth. Besides the fact that Bastila Shan was far too young to hold such a rank, Carth couldn't help but feel a touch of enthusiasm about her. Sure, she didn't belong there, but there was a valid purpose for her being placed in that position. The Padawan, though very inexperienced, was by no means incompetent. After all, she had earned a name for herself with her Battle Meditation. Moreover, the Republic owed her the death of Darth Revan a year before: a tremendous blow to the Sith. However, Darth Malak, Revan's former apprentice, had since seized the reins of power and was exerting colossal pressure on the Republic, which was only able to stand thanks to Bastila Shan's Battle Meditation.
« Have you come here just to stare at me, make me feel uncomfortable and waste my time, or perhaps you have some real reason for interrupting me, Onasi ? » Bastila eventually spoke, as she focused her attention back on her folders lying on the desk, in a tone reflecting some sort of disappointment that she had to initiate this talk - a conversation she would so gladly have been spared.
« As much as I feel very enthusiastic about the idea, I have not come here to annoy you, Madam. Not now. » Carth teasingly responded.
Bastila raised her eyes to the soldier in dismay. Her gaze was impatient but confident as she tacitly ordered Carth to get to the point.
« Commander. » He resumed with greater solemnity and recovering a more appropriate posture. « I'm certainly overstepping my duties, but I've come to make sure that everything is going well. No offence, but your presence here gives me no great comfort. Lord Malak has been hunting you relentlessly throughout the galaxy since Revan's death. How can I be sure the Sith won't spot us? Forgive me, Madam, but I am most concerned for the lives of the men here on this ship. »
Bastila kept staring at the soldier, but this time with eyes that suggested a degree of embarrassment. However, she also appeared to be fully aware of what Carth was telling her.
The Jedi spoke up calmly: « "I know the dangers we are running. And I know the risks my mere presence brings to the Endar Spire and her crew. And, believe me, these are not parameters that make me feel very relaxed. But I'm like you, and like everyone else on the ship: I've been given orders, I haven't been consulted. I understand your fears, and I will not be among those who tell you that they are not justified. I cannot guarantee that the Sith will not find us. I cannot tell you that there is no real threat. There is a possibility that the operation will run into trouble. In which case, you must all be ready. Those are your orders. »
There was suddenly a very different atmosphere between the two officers; their looks had softened. Understanding and respect on both sides came through. As for Carth, he now realised that Bastila was a reasonable woman, fully aware of her current position and the dangers she could bring to an entire crew; she would not do anything that could compromise the physical or moral integrity of anyone. Nevertheless, as she had just said, she unfortunately had no real power over the course of events.
« Thank you for your words, Madam. You can of course rely on my full commitment. If I may say one last thing... »
Onasi stopped speaking, awaiting his Commander's permission to go on. Bastila immediately nodded approvingly. The man then resumed:
« Don't cut yourself off from the men on this ship. You are a Jedi, indeed, but you are their Commander. They need to see you, or at least catch glimpses of you. Don't be one of those general officers who continually retreats to their quarters. They don't like that. »
« I understand, Lieutenant. » The Jedi replied gratefully, then added : « Thank you. »
Carth Onasi nodded respectfully one last time and turned to leave Bastila Shan's quarters. Before he could walk away, the Padawan called out to him:
« Lieutenant ! » The young woman exclaimed. Carth Onasi glanced back at her in expectation. Bastila then took a few steps away from her desk, which until then had been some sort of comforting ground - a symbolically guaranteeing her authority - and joined the officer by the door of her quarters. When she got to him, she spoke:
« I am truly sorry for the first impression I made when I arrived. I know that much more was expected of me; I never wanted to look cold, but I was extremely nervous about the whole situation. I will apologise to the servicemen who welcomed me as soon as I get the chance. I will also apologise to this man who perhaps did not deserve such treatment from me; I failed to weigh my authority. »
At this, Onasi flashed a contented smile. Perhaps something could be done with her after all. Perhaps she was a more responsible person than what she had suggested so far.
Only time would tell.
« I understand, Madam. The men will hear your apology wisely, of that I'm sure. As for Galhor... you shouldn't worry too much. Tavhir would have done far worse than you have. »
Bastila Shan released a muffled chuckle. The Lieutenant's last words had soothed her.
« May I be excused, Commander? » Carth asked, which seemingly snapped Bastila out of her thoughts.
« Of course, Lieutenant. Thank you again. » She simply replied.
Onasi walked away and left the Commander's quarters once and for all. The woman settled back at her desk, and resolved herself to meet her regiment as soon as the occasion presented itself. For the time being, she had to get back to work.

22 January 871 … the West Saxons were defeated by vikings of the Great Heathen Army at Old Basing (near Basingstoke, Hampshire).
This came two weeks after the bloody encounter at Ashdown (a West Saxon win).
This left Halfdan as the main leader of the Great Army, especially with his brother Ivar ‘the Boneless’ back in the family base of Dublin).
Halfdan and his men had broken out of their camp at Reading. Their aim was to seize winter supplies from the vast royal estate at Basing, or they planned an audacious raid on the royal city of Winchester itself. Either way, they were intercepted by the West Saxon army near Basing.
Asser, the Welsh monk who wrote King Alfred’s biography 20 years later, picks up the story:
“King Æthelred, together with his brother Alfred, combined their forces for a battle against the Vikings, and went to Basing. They clashed violently on all fronts, but after a long struggle the Vikings gained the victory and were masters of the battlefield. When the battle was over, another Viking army came from overseas and attached itself to the band.”
It was the middle of winter, and both sides had taken a mauling in recent weeks (at Reading, Englefield, Ashdown and now Basing). For the next two months, they will take a break from fighting … and Wessex, ‘The Last Kingdom’, will soon have a new king.
