in this post, i explore valravn and how bronwyn differs from them. as a disclaimer, much of the valravn lore you'll see me talk about is of my own making. the original valravn myth does not go into great detail, at least from what i could find, so i'm taking creative liberties.

valravn

now! as a refresher, valravn are born after a raven consumes the heart of someone who has sacrificed themselves for another intentionally. this is why they are heavily associated with battlefields; there would typically be at least one soldier who sacrificed themself to save their comrade, and if a raven ate that soldier's heart, a valravn would be born. during times of war, valravn were said to be a major problem and the real reason differing peoples agreed to peace.

the truth? valravn are not that common of a creature, but the few times they come into existence, they are never received well and cause much bloodshed. while granted the intelligence of a human, their form is monstrous, sometimes appearing as a half-raven half-wolf hybrid, and other times appearing similar to a griffin. the fear and confusion that follows their creation almost always leads to a bloody rampage of sorts.

the average valravn must consume a second human heart to gain the ability to take a human form, and this heart must be willingly promised to them. this is usually done by making their first deal. to maintain this ability, they must continue to eat human hearts.

valravn make deals that are not magically binding but rather based upon honor. after all, they exist because of a human's honorable actions, so though they are bloody creatures, they are honorable. they will not harm you or your loved ones so long as you do not break the terms of your deal.

bronwyn

bronwyn's origin is different from most other valravn. she knows exactly what she is and what her purpose is when she becomes a valravn because of the deal she unknowingly struck with the sorcerer. while she might be overwhelmed, she at least has a task to focus upon, avoiding needless carnage along the way. she also devours a promised heart much sooner than her kin thanks to her situation. as far as origins go, bronwyn's is more fortunate than most despite the emotional turmoil she experiences.

she differs from most valravn in not only her origin but in her abilities as well. she does not have to consume human hearts as often as others do; she is able to take any form she wishes, be it human or otherwise; and a deal made with bronwyn is magically binding.

what makes her special? part of the deal made with the sorcerer was that bronwyn would inherit his magic as long as she protected his family to the best of her ability. his magic enhanced her abilities and made her stronger, more resilient. of all the valravn you might meet, bronwyn is by far the strongest and oldest.

in terms of power, she isn't as powerful as a god, and she will not claim to be. but bronwyn is old and clever and gifted with much; it is foolish to assume one will have the upper hand or even be a match... without the proper tools. if you hope to defeat any valravn, arm yourself with lead and copper.

3.75 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

What a cliffhanger!!! It caught me off guard.

I didn't realize that the story would revolve around Maeve and that the original group would be secondary characters.

Bronwyn & Nate were my favorites in book 1; and for most of this book I was upset at how they were behaving. Thankfully it resulted in 'End Game' talks 😄 and that left me satisfied.

I don't know where this Phoebe character came from, but they talk about how she was around all along. It was tough for me to relate to her. She wasn't given much depth, and the fact that her 'secret' was revealed so early before I could invest in her character made me not care about it.

Knox was briefly mentioned in book 1, but it took me a while to figure out his deal as well. There wasn't much indication in the first book that Maeve had any friends, so for them to suddenly be main characters felt off at first.

In the end I did enjoy Maeve's point of view, and actually liked Knox the most. (I pictured him looking like Griffin Gluck.)

Overall, it wasn't as exciting, and the characters weren't as charismatic as in the first book. I think I may even enjoy the second season of the TV series more now that my favorite characters are still the stars of the story.

WITH THAT SAID, I already pre-ordered my copy of the third book, so I will definitely be reading that to know how it all ends! 🗡️🗡️

Electric Youth Celebrate New Album at Music Hall of Williamsburg

Singer Bronwyn Griffin and multi-instrumentalist Austin Garrick have been dating since eighth grade—and they’ve also been making dreamy, cinematic synth pop as Electric Youth since 2011. The Toronto twosome broke into the mainstream thanks to “A Real Hero,” a collaboration with College, which featured heavily on the Drive soundtrack, before their debut long-player, Innerworld (stream it here), dropped three years later. “Lots of artist bios use the word ‘otherworldly,’ but the 13 songs on Innerworld really do sound like they're coming from somewhere else,” raved Exclaim. “They float in the ether, where light meets dark, and glide freely from one moment to the next.
