"but I can't find any adult books I like :( it's too hard" go to a library. please. go to a library and walk up to a librarian and say "please help me find a book" librarians WANT to help you. give them a list of YA and kids books you like and there will be someone there who WANTS to go wandering the adult fiction section giving you suggestions. take the books home. try them. hate some of them. try another one. until you find something you like. make a librarians day and give them a book recommending task and you will find something you like. there are so many books out there stop reading the same kids series over and over again.

everyone is more capable of reading books and academia they’re intimidated by than they think they are. it’s like working out a muscle. it takes a little practice but anyone can increase the limits of their reading retention, vocabulary and imagination. it’s an effort worth pursuing and a skill to be coveted as society grows more and more anti intellectual. and i think pursuing more challenging materials actually enriches and adds more value to your lighter reading as well

Hi, i just wanted to ask how you were doing, as I appreciate your writing a lot and would rather you didn't burn out as it is not fun (says a burnt out writer)
hey baby! thanks for checking in on me, that's very sweet of you <3 I'm doing alright, unfortunately I am getting burnt out but not necessarily on writing! I'm taking 4 classes this semester and one of them is extremely rigorous, I'm talking 2 8-minute long speeches researched, written, memorized, and performed every week. on top of that I work 40 hours and I'm trying to maintain a stable romantic relationship so i find myself with very little me time which can make it hard to write! but I'm on vacation in ny with my best friend this week so I'm hoping to unwind! We're actually writing side-by-side right now it's very cutesy and fun and healing <3

The two faces of creativity
Creativity is often considered a mystical and unprovoked phenomenon—a spontaneous burst of inspiration that leads to groundbreaking ideas, artistic masterpieces, or revolutionary solutions. Photo by Pixabay on Pexels.com But to me, creativity is far more nuanced, more deliberate, and profoundly integrated into every aspect of life. I see it as a coin with two distinct yet inseparable faces: one…

every time someone writes a man doing carpentry and home repairs as some kind of shorthand for said male character living out a common masculine ideal i find it really disconcerting because that's the thing my mom does in her spare time.
it's very much a, I know exactly what you're doing BECAUSE it is not having the intended effect on my conclusions/assumptions about this character as a reader, sort of dissonance

so we know that dehya can read seeing as she reads the letter her father left for her at the very end of her story quest ( i feel like literacy rates are not particularly great in the desert, so dehya is probably a rarity in that regard ), but i don't think she bears any great love for reading. i think she was taught to read by kusayla in his well-meaning but fumbled attempts to prepare her for a life beyond the desert ( knowing that literacy would stand her in good stead when she eventually left the desert and was employed by the homayani family ), but dehya only learned to the extent that it was a functional skill. she could read letters, she could read signs and documents and merc contracts, but you would be hard pressed to ever find dehya reading a book.
this doesn't mean that she doesn't enjoy stories, however. her father would stage plays for the whole of dakah al-ahmar and was clearly a man with a very vivid imagination who enjoyed verbal storytelling ( and for all the man's faults, as a child dehya enjoyed that escapism from the harshness of desert life ). so this means that dehya would much rather someone read or tell or even act out a story than she would actually sit down and read a book herself.

Albedo shows you another memory. This one is a storybook, illustrated elegantly but undoubtedly for children.
“Was this yours?”
He shakes his head. “No. My sister’s.”
He turns a page. A young girl’s face smiles up at you from the paper. She looks kind. You glance between her and Albedo; you can see the resemblance.
“You loved her?” you ask.
“Very much. She was the brightest thing this world ever knew.” He combs through the storybook, talking about his sister and the lost memories he can only ever brush against here; the games they played, the smiles they shared, and the fondness he has never lost for her, even now.
The look in his eyes is faraway. He’s lost, you notice. Lost in a different time and in some ways a different place. His attention is completely elsewhere. He’s wandering away from you and into what was with that hint of a wistful smile on his face which doesn’t quite mind being there. Honestly, you think he’s telling himself all of this more than he is you.
And, for now, you let him.
-🎻 anon
i wonder how heartbreaking it would be if, when you asked if he loved his sister, he paused...
"did you love her?"
and albedo's little smile fades into nothingness. there's a slight draw to his brows when he replies, "i don't know." he seems confused. "perhaps i did, once upon a time. it was so long ago." his smile returns but with a bitterness that is palpable. "time is not kind to survivors."

No babe it’s so cool and hot that you always insist that fantasy books written to meet a 4th graders’ comprehension skills have more complex themes and a greater sense of praxis than anything written for adults
EDIT: After a week of this, not one person yelling at me has made a compelling argument for why they, at an age greater than 21, have a reading diet that is more well-rounded and healthier than someone who branches out even occasionally beyond ONLY reading books for children and young adults. And that ONLY is really tripping you guys up. And many people seem to think that this stagnation is just a natural state that cannot be worked on or that it’s rude to think a grown adult should want to better themselves and broaden their horizons. I feel sorry for everyone who thinks that way. Beyond the snark and sniping at a fraction of the absolutely deranged responses to this post, the almost-defeatism of that mentality makes me more sad than I can express. I hope one day you all change your minds and flex your muscles. You might surprise yourselves.
