every time someone writes a man doing carpentry and home repairs as some kind of shorthand for said male character living out a common masculine ideal i find it really disconcerting because that's the thing my mom does in her spare time.

it's very much a, I know exactly what you're doing BECAUSE it is not having the intended effect on my conclusions/assumptions about this character as a reader, sort of dissonance
