Ladies and gentlemen,

Thank you for joining us tonight at the Swynlake Veterans Ball, a special evening to honor the service and sacrifice of those who have worn the uniform and stood for something greater than themselves.

It is my privilege to introduce tonight’s honored guests. First, I am humbled to stand here as a former diver for the Royal Navy, representing a brotherhood of service I will carry with me forever. Joining us is Errol Woolf, a veteran of the UK Special Forces, whose dedication and valor have set the highest standard of excellence. And we are also honored by Willis Tibbs, who served with distinction in the Royal Army Medical Corps, bringing hope and healing to those in the darkest of times.

We are grateful to have these remarkable individuals with us tonight and thank them for their service and presence.

As we celebrate, we also pause to remember those who are no longer with us but whose legacy remains strong in our hearts. Arthur Badun, a Royal Army pilot, gave his life in action in 2018. James Slade, who served bravely in the Royal Navy during World War II, contributed to shaping the world we live in today. And Cairán Van Blair, who stood for freedom during the Revolutionary War of 1776, reminds us of the enduring spirit of service across the generations.

To their families, and to the families of all veterans, we offer our deepest gratitude and respect. It is their sacrifices, too, that we honor tonight.

"Wow," Steve says. "You cleaned."

"Did it for you, sweetheart," Eddie says, and almost bites his own tongue off at the soft giggle that gets him.

"Looks weird without your posters." Steve's arms are crossed over his chest as he surveys Eddie's strange, blank bedroom. "And all your junk. Like you gutted the place."

Eddie chooses not to react to the junk comment. It's honestly pretty deserved. "Yeah, well. I got a bunch of them after ’84, so."

"And you're sure you checked all of them?" Steve gestures to the few still hanging up. "These ones were all here back then?"

"I'm sure," Eddie says.

Steve nods and starts setting up their stuff for filming. Eddie does his makeup while Steve gets the camera on the tripod, and then they swap. Steve smears flesh-colored goo on his sides and a little on his chest and neck to hide the fucking hickies Eddie gave him, and Eddie squats down to check the date.

Late November, ’84.

"When, um," Eddie starts, sucking the inside of his cheek when Steve turns to face the camera and his stomach hair is just right there through the eyepiece. "When exactly was the Upside Down shit in '84?"

"Uhh…" Steve spits the hem out of his mouth, curtaining Eddie's view of his happy trail. "I think it started on Halloween? And I got involved pretty quick after that."

"Okay." Eddie stops squatting. Steve's right there when he stands up and it makes the slightest flush appear on his cheeks, this proximity. "So the camera says the twenty-ninth, were you all healed up by then?"

"I think so. My face always heals pretty quick. Dunno about the ribs, though. I think the bruises were gone around Christmas."

"Should we... not show your chest,then?" Eddie's trying to think logistically here. Trying not to linger on how Hargrove bruised his fucking ribs.

Steve hums. "Yeah, maybe not. We could do, like, me fully clothed, you naked. That's always hot."

"Sure," Eddie says, extremely casually. "Yeah, great idea."

Veterans Ball - Speech

Join us for a night of sophistication, gratitude, and hope - as we come together to support those who have given so much.

The evening will feature fine dining, music, and a chance to give back in style. Funds raised will support The British Legion’s mission of providing assistance and fostering solidarity among veterans and their families.

A speech by Jasper Badun -

Ladies and gentlemen,

Thank you all for gathering here tonight to honor the men and women who have served and sacrificed for their country. Veterans are the backbone of our communities, a reminder of courage, resilience, and the power of unity in the face of adversity.

For me, serving as a diver in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces was an honor I carry with me every day. But alongside the pride, there is a weight. The weight of memories—some of camaraderie, of brothers and sisters in arms standing together, and some of loss, of faces we’ll never see again. Tonight, we stand not just for those who made it home but for those who didn’t, and for their families who carry that same weight.

It is because of their sacrifices that we live with the freedoms we enjoy today. We owe them more than thanks; we owe them our action, our respect, and our unwavering support.

Here in Swynlake, we have a unique opportunity to continue that support by welcoming the Royal British Legion into our town. The Legion is more than an organization—it is a lifeline for so many veterans and their families, offering assistance, fellowship, and a sense of belonging.

I urge each of you to join me in signing the petition to bring the Royal British Legion to Swynlake. Together, we can ensure that no veteran feels forgotten and that their sacrifices are honored not just in words, but in lasting, meaningful ways.
