So what are the stamps and user boxes actually used for other than just being silly and cute
IS THIS MY CHANCE TO INTRODUCE SOMEONE TO THE CULTURE OF THE OLD WEB AND PROFILE CUSTOMIZATION!?!?!?!?
OK, so other than being cute and silly their purpose is to uh… be um… cute and silly decoratio- who wrote this script?? Whoever did is horrible at its job, like yeah it's right but- let me just sugarcoat it a bit mor-
WHAT ARE USERBOXES
“Userboxes are boxes containing a little bit of information about someone! They originated from wikipedia and were meant to be put on people’s user pages, but here people either choose to reblog those that apply to them or put them on their about pages (or both!)”
—Definition stolen borrowed from Userboxed's FAQ
So, basically, Wikipedia had this little thing where NERDS would code* boxes of information and people said “HEY, THAT'S SO COOL WHY DO ONLY THE SMART PEOPLE HAVE THOSE” and said “IMMA MAKE MY OWN, SCREENSHOT IT AND PUT IT ON MY WEBSITE/PROFILE/PINNED POST”
*Zzz boring code (I have a website myself, I'm allowed to call it boring)
WHY I LOVE USERBOXES
✦ Most people won't read your pinned post in its totality, but will read the userboxes. ✦ They're colorful, have one or two sentences max per userbox and have an image on the side, so it catches people's attention more than just plain text. ✦ They get their point across: your personality, interests, sometimes aesthetics… ✦ MAKING YOUR OWN IS SUPER EASY!!
The standard size is 239px × 49px, but bigger/high quality userboxes can be found, always following that ratio, of course.
WHAT ARE STAMPS
Basically, just images/GIFs with a border resembling a real life stamp. These are called static or animated stamps, AND I'M IN LOVE WITH THE LATTER TYPE. I believe they come from Deviantart and serve a similar purpose to userboxes: decorating your profile.
WHY I LOVE STAMPS
✦ Collecting them is super fun!! It reminds you of which parts of the internet you have visited. ✦ Groups of stamps look super cool together. ✦ That thing about getting your point across but without text and writing AESTHETIC in bold red underlined text.
The standard size is 99px × 56px, but bigger/high quality stamps can be found, always following that ratio, of course.
BUT WHERE DO YOU PLACE THEM !?
You can have a couple on your profiles (Spacehey), pinned posts (Tumblr)… But where people COLLECT THEM is in
A CORNER ON YOUR OWN WEBSITE / NEOCITIES
EXAMPLES OF COOL NEOCITIES THAT WITH COOL STAMPS/COLLECTIONS
✦ Shishka ✦ Cinni ✦ Oddity Commoddity ✦ Ko's Crag! ✦ Cloud Cover ✦ Echo's Graphics ✦ silly zone ✦ Mad Paddington ✦ My own website lmao
THIS IS YOUR CALL TO MAKE YOUR OWN NEOCITIES !!
(Because it's my hyperfixation, topped only by TF2, and I MUST share it with the world) (I already convinced my light to make a neocities, YOU ARE NEXT.)
CONCLUSION
TL;DR: They're silly and cute BUT, they're also nostalgic and an important part of internet culture
I also recommend watching the next videos just because (you won't understand userboxes or stamps any better, but the culture around it)
✦ Whatever Happened to Profile Customization? ✦ Old Websites Were Cooler, Actually
I hope you found my explanation/yapping interesting and also answered your question (if you can find your answer, there's so much filler, god) HEHE

unfortunately i have to yap more on the economic divides.
just there are so many implications and complications when it comes to generational wealth vs cycles of poverty. cycles of poverty my beloved in fiction and beloathed in life
i yapped a lot in the tags of my last post so read those too but i will be yapping so much here too!!! the way it affects familial relationships consumes me, two bits father leaves and suddenly now his mom has to go work and she sure as hell can’t get a great job cause she’s a greaser so she probably doesn’t have much education and she’s an asian woman in the 60s!! she’s now a single mom with kids to take care of. so she ends up working as a waitress or something similar and uses that money to scrape by, food stamps were starting to become a thing in the 60s as well so she def used those. and then she has two children. she can’t get them through college and two bit knows he has to step up and be the man of the house and that means finding some way to make money so he has to drop outta school cause he needs to get a job. that’s what greasers do and that’s what was always gonna end up happening to him. the cycle didn’t start with him or end with him but it has to keep going l
ace and steve too. bounced around to different homes, never having one home with a steady flow of income, having to find ways to get through it. ace who didn’t trust any men, especially when money was involved, and only trusted those close to her!!! the cycle of poverty hits them all again as her and her brothers can’t rely on a father to bring in income. god plus the way that poverty creates addicts due to the stress of it all and then addiction further fuels poverty since you have to buy your vices. some addicts can’t hold a steady job which makes it even worse. all cycling in on itself over and over again. and that’s not even mentioning the clear redlining that tilly mentions in her ace backstory (this may even be a whole other post tbh) the town is designed to keep the poor poorer and the rich richer.
johnny who in my mind is clearly food insecure (y’all saw the way that boy snatched that food from dally and hid it away immediately right) never quite sure where he is gonna get food from besides the curtis’s since his parents spend most of the money on alcohol. the anxiety that would bring him and it impacts his story so hard cause he always is at a disadvantage due to that. there is a reason that boy looks so small
dally has always travelled, choosing to steal to get what he needs cause he never stays long enough anywhere to get a full job. he’s been labelled a hood since day one anyway and wouldn’t get a great job anyway cause of his skin color so he decides to lean into it and do what he has to do to get by.
then we have the curtis brothers. who were so close to getting out of tulsa. they were able to try to break the cycle and send darry off to college after he was one of the first to get through high school and make it out just for him to have to come straight back. no matter how hard darry tried he couldn’t ever end it but at least he can try to get pony through school and get him a better job that he can succeed in and love comfortably with
more various thoughts i couldn’t fit into any one greaser story- a lot of the kids were most likely mistakes and/or teen pregnancies that they really couldn’t afford to have but had to go through with it anyway. the cycle of addiction that runs through these families. the parents hopes and dreams of getting out never getting fulfilled. the way race plays into poverty as well
then you have the socs who have all the money they need, who have the opportunity to get out and choose not to take it cause tulsa is a source of pride for them. they benefit from the cycle too even if the kids don’t always realize it. just ugh. the way all of it comes into play with the overarching story
#if you see a typo i’m tired so no you didn’t#i just be thinking soooooo much all the time about this#plus how all of this interacts with the way race is portrayed in the story#i think about the red lining every single day it’s so bad#not to mention the fact i know there would be a tonnnnnn of gerrymandering#the way kids mirror their parents too and so they do often adapt their traits and attitudes#anyway i hope the people enjoy#the outsiders broadway#the outsiders#the outsiders musical#sodapop curtis#cherry valance#ponyboy curtis#darry curtis#johnny cade#dally winston#dallas winston#bob sheldon#clark brillstein#ace outsiders#the outsiders ace#twobit mathews#two bit mathews#marcia the outsiders#bev jitney bush#paul holden#steve randle

Deja Vu
Dino x Reader
Summary:As exhausted Chan needs to unpack, but he ends up unboxing feelings and all his old memories with you instead.
Gene:Angst?,fluffy if you squint, friends to lovers, friends to enemies.
Rating:General Audiences
•Deja Vu•
"Where do you want this?" one of the movers asked, carrying the last of the boxes.
Chan rips his eyes from his soon-to- be room and points to the kitchen table.
"Over there, please."
The stocky man places the small box on the mahogany, and with a tilt of his hat went on his merry way out. But not before Chan handed the man a little something for his trouble.
Moving days were always a cocktail of excitement and stress. They almost always left Chan out of sorts. Which is why the 24 year-old decided to settle in alone, not sure if he had enough headspace to accommodate someone else, even if he needed the help.
Chan makes his way to the table and an envelope catches his eye. It's come a long way, judging from all the stamps and stickers and return to sender notes, but somehow it keeps finding its way back to him.
A letter from Y/N. One he's been meaning to throw away.
Looking around at his new apartment—a two bedroom with pristine white walls and massive windows that let in plenty of natural light and offered a quaint view of the street outside—Chan felt a sense of déjà vu. It would have been easier to shake off, if only he had never been here before.
With you.
And with that thought, Chan doesn't even look for a cutter to tear the seal and paper apart.
0-0-0-0
"Damn. We really went through the trouble of finding him when he was the one who put up the wrong address, and he didn't even give us a tip!" a 19 year-old Chan moaned, not even waiting for the guy who ordered the Valentine's package (giant teddy bear, chocolates and flower, free handwritten note to boot!) to get out of earshot before complaining.
"Someday, we're going to move into a place like that. Did you see the windows?" you huffed, changing the topic and trying your best to keep up with your best friend's strides.
"Just say you have a window fetish and go." Chan teased and added, "I don't mind moving in with you, but you better not be a slob."
"Well if you quit your yapping and sold enough teddy bears, we just might be roomies in Seoul." You replied as you both got on your bikes.
"Sold our kidneys and enough teddy bears, you mean." Chan joked. "Hey [Y/N], race you back to the shop?"
0-0-0-0
Teddy bears, and pencil holders, the southbound bus waiting by the street. Quiet songs on off tune guitar strings—that is who you are to me.
The crashing surf, the maths and fractions, drying paint and homilies. Broken glasses, choir practice— in them it is you that I see.
Seoul. Chan was finally living his best life in Seoul. No more delivering teddy bears that gave him rhinitis. No more waiting for his moment. No more manning the cash register or refilling thermal rolls or Tuesday morning class duties.
He didn't have to wash his dad's pick up, or set up dumb marriage booths on Valentine's Day. No more making bookmarks for valued customers. No more [Y/N].
That was the price he paid in order to live the dream, and boy, did it cost him. He'd cut his losses to be where he is today. But to have his song and his stage he had to lose you. And yet you always found your way back to him.
Only if you felt the same. Then will you find me in things, these small things, around? When these memories stay clear as day, how can I forget?
0-0-0-0
"How do you sing this again?" you point to the words of an English Christmas carol. The manager wanted the teddy bear deliveries to come with a little song performance. It was good for business, but bad for your self-esteem. At least Chan was there to help.
" What a bright time, it's the right time ... Seriously, [Y/N]. You should have known this by now." Chan puffs, stuffing his hands in his pocket in an attempt to keep warm as you both make your way to the next delivery. You stop walking beside him to accommodate an oncoming sneeze.
Chan looks back at you with a shake of his head, but he hands his jacket anyway. "Here. Come on, or we'll be late."
Just as you mumble thanks, the pitter of patter of rainfall fills the evening and the busy street is suddenly clear of the crowd.
"Well, what do you know! Foot traffic problem solved!" you laughed, almost dropping the delivery.
"Only you'd think pouring rain is good news." Chan smiled, as you practiced the song once more on your way. "Would it kill you to sound happier when you sing too?"
0-0-0-0
Tuesday mornings, Christmas carols, pick up trucks and factories. Doodles, books, and calculators—they will bring you back to me. Homemade bookmarks, my initials, pouring rain, and marriage booths. March and May and all the Sundays— in them it is you that I see.
Reading the letter, Chan didn't know whether to laugh or get pissed—at the fact that your wrote this in the cards you both sold at the shop, or because you were still working there, delivering stuffed animals, and singing at people's doors and offices without him.
Only if you felt the same. Then will you find me in things, these small things around? Will these memories stay clear as day? Or will I forget?
He should've stopped there. Heck, Chan should have burned this letter and your memory long ago. He had left his old life for a room with big windows and a nice view in Seoul. It was all he ever wanted, but why was he holding on to a card that painted a stupid picture of his stupid past?
Why was this measly scratch of dusty folded paper the only thing that has made him feel closer to being whole and wanted in the past four years?
Why did you even choose to forgive? And how did Chan dare to forget? What good is a room with a massive window when [Y/N] wasn't there to admire it the way they do?
Will I let go? Surely not. Surely not today.
For the casualties, apologies, and whatever's left unsaid— I will not forget.
Chan sees the tear drop on the ink before he hears it... a voice in the hallway. A song. It's not perfect. You don't sound confident but at least you sound earnest.
"What a bright time, it's the right time..."
Chan would recognize it anywhere. It was the voice of someone who tries, who never gives up , who will always find their way back to him.
It's the voice of someone who forgives. The voice of someone who will never forget.

Nightingale - 46
Fandom: Naruto Pairing: Hatake Kakashi &/x Fem!OC Contents: Fluff, feels, angst, few NSFW hints, reference to past events. A/N: Oho? Another chapter? Well, I hope you enjoy it. ASK or REBLOG for tag! HUUUGE thanks to all who are reblogging already <3
Ch. 46
Packing their belongings had been quick and it only takes one load to bring it to the house – a load that’s primarily made up with the jōnin's boxes which somehow bothers Kakashi despite knowing why. It’s not his main concern, though.
Coming back from a longer mission, he has been worried that the woman’s decisiveness might have wavered. Most of her lifetime has been spent with nothing but a memory of a home, let alone safety or privacy, so no one would fault her for getting cold feet at the prospect of sharing what essentially is supposed to be a safe haven.
Still, he doesn’t feel any doubt or hesitation from Uguïsu as they empty the borrowed wheelbarrow. Her smile is brighter than the sun shining on the clear blue sky and the birds in the still overgrown garden are adopting the bouncy tune she’s humming.
Dropping down the last cardboard box on the kitchen table (courtesy of a friend from his ANBU days), Kakashi stretches his back. “Gonna head back with the wheelbarrow, alright?”
“Will you be back?” she answers from the living room, already busy unpacking books and sorting them, but she pauses to look over when he doesn’t answer. “’Kashi, sweetie?”
Uguïsu looks like she belongs. Not just in the house but in between the lingering memories that Kakashi still can’t quite talk about because...because there’s just so, so much all tangled up in it. He’s good at ignoring the old pain. Hell, he’s good at ignoring any pain and sometimes it feels like it’s just a dream.
Maybe that’s how it feels for her too? Yes, the past has hurt them both in different ways. Beyond words. Beyond repair. It’s strange to imagine something new and good being built right on top of the old ruins but that’s exactly what Kakashi, at least, is starting to believe can happen. Piece by piece, he’ll have to sift through the rubble to clear the site for what’s to come...and he’s happy he won’t be alone while doing it.
“Kakashi?” She’s standing right in front of him, carefully pulling the fabric away to reveal his face and kiss something wet away from his cheeks.
“Yes -” he has to clear his voice before continuing -”as long as there’s a chance you’ll be here, then I’ll come back...after a few other errands.”
The smile is back, moulding to his lips with a hint of salt. “I need to get something too, but I’m counting on you to come back.” Uguïsu buries her fingers in the unruly, white strands, making him weak-kneed. “Wouldn’t be any need for it, if you didn’t.”
“Mmmm-oho?” It’s amazing how one woman can make his mind almost blank and his body hum with a single nibble on his bottom lip. “What is it?”
“Wouldn’t be any fun telling you, now would it?” She giggles at his pouty face. “Alright, one hint.”
“Please, Uguïsu-chaaan!”
“I got the idea from one of your books,” she whispers into his ear.
And with that she’s gone, leaving Kakashi behind with a raging (albeit confused) boner that delays him before he can see to his own tasks.
...
You think the world of Naruto. Don’t you, Iruka?
Kakashi is smart enough to admit that the team isn’t 100% in sync, but both men know that that isn’t the important part – it’s the progress that counts. All three team members need equally unique motivations, and after writing and reading so many reports on the trio, Kakashi knows that showing them as much as possible is the right choice even if they risk getting hurt sometimes.
Iruka...well, he might not like how far Kakashi is willing to push the kids.
Because the captain of Team 7? He knows the time has come.
All the signs are there (including the messages he “coincidentally” has heard during the last month): visitors, many of whom are kids or young teens, from other countries; the passports being inspected at the gates and stamped after being compared to a specially issued list, signed by the Hokage; the extra work several of Kakashi’s colleagues has been burdened with as the deadline has neared. The exams are coming.
As if on cue, he hears the tell-tale screech of old Third’s eagle calling to assemble.
...
The comforting scent of dogs catches Kakashi's attention the moment he opens the door to his old and new home. Dogs and tea. He can hear the gentle crackling from the firewood stove and sees the kettle standing on the stone counter next to a smaller box with tea tins, whisks, and cups. Grabbing his favourite (one Uguïsu had added to her tiny collection for whenever he came around), he goes in search of the woman. Bare feet don’t make a sound against the wooden floorboards but he knows that she’s aware he’s there.
The jōnin finds the Ninken before spotting Uguïsu half-buried between them, back against the solid mountain that Buru is. Not too far away stands the tea pot and a steaming cup.
“Think there’s room for one more?” None of the piled up individuals say anything but at least a few of the dogs wriggle around to create a spot next to the woman.
This is bad, Kakashi admits now that he can see her. Dark eyes remain fixed on infinity even as she presses herself close against his chest, lips drawn into a thin line, and the lively glow of her skin diminished. Thankfully, a sense of calm seems to return to her with the first kiss on her forehead.
“When does it start?” Seemingly realizing that she’s talking as if Kakashi has been privy to her thoughts, she adds, “the exams?”
“The first is a week from now,” he explains and tugs her closer, “but the trio and the two other rookie teams need to pass a preliminary first.”
Finally, Uguïsu looks up at him. “I’m sure they’ll do fine. They’ve had the best senseis, after all.”
“And here I thought, I was supposed to make you feel better...”
A furry head lifts lazily. “Want us to leave?”
Shiba’s question contradicts the way he remains almost glued against the blue-haired woman, head resting on her thigh, and eyes trained on her – Kakashi realizes he wasn’t the one being asked. Traitor, but really it makes him happy to know that she isn’t completely alone when he’s gone.
Slender fingers scratch through the stiff hair on the Ninken’s head. “That’s probably best...but thank you all for coming.”
The chorus of gentle yaps fades away with puffs of smoke (the last and biggest only after the humans sit up properly), dumping the room into silence as they lie back down on the warm floor. Tugging Uguïsu closer, the jōnin appreciates the fact that it’s possible to do so, even now, without her tensing or pulling away – instead, she seeks out the contact by draping herself partially over him with a deep sigh.
“So...talk about it or distract you from it?”
She ponders the option for a moment. “Maybe...not a long talk but just...explain what happened so it makes sense?” Looking up at him, the dark eyes are filled with a doubt that Kakashi isn’t used to seeing there, so of course he nods for her to begin. “Yes...well...” she collects her thoughts, “first off...it’s not like visitors are completely unheard of here, I know that, but as I was getting further downtown, it started to be a lot of strangers that clearly weren’t merchants or something like that.”
Despite the best of skills of any given team of shinobis, it’s near impossible to hide the way the individual members rely on each other while in new surroundings. All of them would be on high alert and as such subconsciously move in a certain manner, almost as if sticking to a formation. A good team can be discreet at this so civilians won’t notice and the same applies to the hand signals or the whistles, all of it executed in a flash too quick for a commoner to be sure they even saw anything. It’s an entirely different matter if the observer is a ninja too.
Of course, the visitors in question aren’t supposed to be blending in as if on a mission but rather show openly who, or rather what, they are.
“It’s a lot of different headbands and faces,” the blue-haired woman laments, “even more unknown factors and risks.”
Kakashi rubs her arm in an attempt to soothe her. “I admit it’s tense as some of the nations represented aren’t necessarily our allies. Officially, there’s a ceasefire...but the towns guard has been strengthened and every foreign participant, be it students or senseis, are issued a passport after verification of their identity. Much like we always do except this time we have their information in advance.”
“Passport. Identification.” Sitting up, Uguïsu pulls out something from one of her pockets. “These things are easy to get.”
Taking what he’s handed, the man looks with slight surprise at the documentation in his hands. Already, the edges are worn and there are smudges here and there. He recognizes the woman on the picture, the name “Mei” as well.
“That explains how you could circumvent the wards...how did you...?”
She has the decency to look a tad remorseful, fingers interlocked and gaze averted. “You know how...”
Kakashi has had his suspicions after learning about the kekkei genkai she possesses and he can see on the sheepish expression on his girlfriend’s face that she isn’t proud of having used the power on the duo at the gate. Poor Hagane and Kamizuki.
“Yeeeeah....I had some apologizing to do after the hokage had okay’ed me,” Uguïsu mumbles. Her fingers are busying themselves with a strand of hair and the jōnin can hear the rapid heartbeat in the silence that follows. “They took it...kinda good?”
Thinking back on the worry on Hagane Kotetzu’s face in the winter when Uguïsu and her teammates had been brought to the hospital, the white-haired ninja feels confident enough to squash any concerns she still harbours. In fact...it’s almost surprising that more people haven’t maintained any animosity towards her. He looks at the woman.
Sunshine is slanting through the window behind her, creating a golden aura with flickering specks. The warm colour from the wood is reflected onto Uguïsu’s face, preventing it from being concealed by shadows and softening the contours – it cannot lessen the unease that sharpens her frown and has buried into the distant gaze like steel.
“Sweetheart...” Kakashi begins but doesn’t know how to continue in a manner that truly conveys what he is thinking, so instead he backpedals a bit, “we knew this day would come and I’ve already taken some steps to keep your presence hidden.”
Quietly, he explains about the meeting and the request (order, really) he has gotten issued for everyone to only refer to her as Mei and deny any knowledge of her real identity. Then he finds one of his boxes and reveals the contents: wigs, beards, tins of colours for makeup and hair, and even some masks and costume pieces. None of those items are likely to be necessary, knowing a bit of Uguïsu’s skills when it comes to remaining undetected, still the existence might add to the sense of security.
“We can piece together a persona that no one would be able to see through.”
A twinkle in her eye makes Kakashi frown. “Not too good, though.”
“Why...why not?”
“I don’t want you to forget I’m your girlfriend,” she teases.
What else can he do than scoff at that? “Silly-head. Like that could ever happen.” Giggling softly, the woman allows herself to be dragged onto his lap and lose herself in the kiss. “I promised I’d be there for you no matter what,” Kakashi mumbles against her lips, “so don’t you dare think a new face will change that.”

UwU the rest of the outline at per request. @lumpy-veev (still unfinished but it's okay! This should be thought of as a rough draft.) 💙
🦝 "RaR 3" or "Breaking Point" 🐍
It would be an unofficial Brawl, which is not allowed, but it happens, and what can you even do?
I see the two as basically ignoring each other's presence upon finding out that the other is there. Of course, as much as they won't admit it, it's making them think of. Everything.
This leads to even more on edge tense atmosphere whenever they would cross each other's path, because even if it’s a big park, you can only avoid someone for so long, especially when you happen to have common associates. (the Coworkers, Tara, etc.)
It doesn’t help they have growing animosity and take every little thing personally for every interaction.. and it’s only been a month or two.
Rumors begin to pick up around the park-- Just a little chatter at the bar. Just a little observation that those two sure have something between them huh? The gossiper is shushed, because did you forget who runs the place? his connection to Byron?
Luckily, the bartender didn’t seem to hear. He was busy cleaning glasses. The topic’s changed. customers continue to come and go.
One who arrives is Piper, who sits down at the bar. It’s busy, so she waits patiently for Barley to get her usual. (he’s good at that.) He sets down a coaster and the glass in front of her, but instead of a greeting and bustling away this time, he sticks around.
“Byron is well on his way to becoming a topic of interest around here...” he tells her.
She leans forward with a smile. “What have they said? And who, for that case?”
He explains what he heard, and omits the names.
Piper thoughtfully considers this. She had noticed this, but hadn’t chalked it up to a personal history, just conflict of interest. (byron was well off, belle was a thief. he would be cautious) Now that she knew, she wanted every drop of intel.
“I can talk to him. we wouldn’t want our dear coworker being talked about, do we?”
“I do not.” Barley replied, tipping his hat to bid her goodbye as he steps away to another client. He lets Piper take care of this, because he likes letting people come to him if they want to talk, and he feels that Byron would have already approached him if that were the case.
~
So, it’s another one of their patented teatime tête-à-têtes.
Piper skirts around the issue before dropping the news of whispers about the two.
But Byron doesn’t humor the topic, and refuses to talk about it.
Piper cheerfully pokes at him. “Crossed paths? Did you know her before the Park? maybe previous business associates? She robbed you, but you had good insurance, and one day she tricked you? Ooh~ Former flames-?"
And then Byron stands up and is about to leave wordlessly until that last suggestion processes bc if he doesn’t clarify now, ugh that’s gonna be what Piper thinks is plausible (kind of, bc he gay af) and he does NOT want that to be a thing.
“She’s a relative,” he says with so much distaste before he leaves that Piper is even more intrigued. but at the same time, there’s something that tells her she shouldn’t fan the fire any further.
they’ve had their share of back and forths, and it’s been a blue moon since something had gotten him so upset that he just up and leaves.
she drops it, and as the #1 gossipmonger of the park, the hushed whispers of “mystery between byron and belle?” is completely stamped out with a dismissive attitude and several “Really? I didn’t notice anything.”
If Byron really and truly didn't want this around the park, she'd honor that.
~
Of course, with QD Edgar on occasional trips with the Gang, that’s the biggest connection the sibs have at the moment.
The first time Edgar name dropped Byron, Belle froze and listened to 2.47 more seconds of the teen's rambles before telling him to get a move on around camp and quit yapping.
Edgar didn't notice this first time around and grumpily went about his way.
But I'm sure there's one thing or another that makes Edgar talk about his dad manager again, and one thing that will really piss Belle off, is comparison.
Tara, who notices the shift in mood, puts herself in between Edgar and Belle and swiftly soothes things over. She suggests getting on with the plan they have (already knowing what Belle will respond with).
"heist cancelled," Belle states, rearing up Elodie and galloping away from camp. (She usually winds down on her own after celebrating a big heist, but never before-- and never had called it quits at that.)
Edgar is put off. Tara muses that it's nothing he could help...
On her own, Belle just contemplates everything. Hours. It brings up familiar memories of being up on the rooftop with her head buried into her arms and knees feeling terrible.
Except now she's more than grown, with her share of things to be proud of and great memories she forged on her own. She's not curled up on herself anymore. She's staring to the long distance of the desert-- her home-- traveling with ease.
That stupid rooftop section of her life is nothing more than a fraction of her well-lived life.
It doesn't make her feel better.
Yet another thing Byron ruins for her without even trying.
She needed a drink.
~
Not wanting to head back to her camp for the night, and not in the mood to try nabbing some good drink, Belle simply walks into the bar and orders something.
Barley treats her the same as any Brawler, despite what he now knows about her.
As far as he was concerned, she came in there as a customer. And as long as she paid, he saw no problem in serving her...
She drinks quietly, and he keeps an eye on her intake.
And eventually, just like with any other customer with something heavy on their mind and enough drinks, words flow easier.
She doesnt use names, and keeps terms vague. Speaks angrily of her parents. Calls the brother a "dumbass of a pushover."
Now, it isnt like he associates Byron as a (pardon his french) 'dumbass' in any way, but it's the way she uses it that makes Barley connect the dots. The tone wasn't as bitter. Almost fond. Almost.
He lightly prods for a little bit more insight, and she gives up a little more as she drinks.
Unlike the other two members of his Trio, it wasn't in his nature to gossip, so this would stay between them.
Barley listens, because that's what she needs right now. Not advice, not interjections or lectures or deflecting the subject. Just someone to listen.
Eventually he cuts her off before she gets too inebriated (and probably causes trouble.)
{I AM going to write this scene out in depth. And cry while doing so.}
~
On the other side, after the season and back at the Gift Shop, Edgar is 🤔🤔 over that incident. He considers talking with Colette but 1) she's as mad as a Colette could be at the fact that he hung out with the NEW BRAWLER and TARA and didnt bother getting her ANYTHING. and 2) tbh she's a blabbermouth.
Byron does his regular check of the shop that day. Making sure Colette hasn't run off and Edgar isnt sneaking a nap.
He welcomes Edgar back from his little trivial loot and shoot games.
While Edgar hadn't even thought twice about it before, he recalls that when he had told Byron he'd be working at a different section of the park (namely with the new Brawler, Belle) he had acted just as dismissive.
Like yeah, there was your usual "old man doesn't get the teens" shenanigans, but Byron had never belittled his interest in anything before. Calling his involvement in the season a 'trivial game' sounded... personal.
He outright asks Colette if Byron was acting weird.
Any snippiness that Colette may have had for 2 minutes diminishes when there's a chance to talk with her favorite person in the world that she's seen little to none of for two months, AND about her favorite topic: Brawlers!
She spills everything she knows, because despite Piper's efforts, theres no secret a Brawler can try to keep when shes around.
She didn't find out everything of course. But she knows that there were questions involving Byron and Belle. Piper hushed it up, so for sure there was something.
Edgar nods. "Totally. I think she was close to rippin' my head off once. I brought up Byron once and she was ready to chew me out." (in case i didn't make it clear, Edgar picked up a slight drawl because of belle)
"Cool!" Colette exclaimed. "..I mean, not the rip your head off part. But that is cool too. I meant do we have lore on our hands?? That nobody ELSE knows!!?"
Edgar shushed her. Byron is in his office but the shop wasn't really sound proof.
......cue shenanigans from the Coworkers trying to figure things out in their very amateurish ways compared to Piper by "sneaking" around and "nonchalantly" trying to get him to admit something.
Byron knows they're up to something, and humors them until realizing the topic when Edgar tries bringing up the Goldarm Season.
He shuts them down even faster than Piper.
Of course, instead of deterring them like her, he just confirms their suspicions. Colette and Edgar are "o yeah we are def going to get to the bottom of this."
~
So, it's plan B! If they even try asking Piper she throws them for such a loop and leaves them so bewildered that Colette even forgets to ask for anything she could keep, and Edgar didnt realize she gave them nothing to work with until they're already out the door and down the street with cake pops in their hands.
So, Plan C! ...Barley.
It's hard to find a time to go there, since it's busy when they get off work. And Barley always seems to be at one place or another....
So the kids choose the perfect time (roughly midday), and just wait for the perfect day... when Byron comes in and checks the shop, then decides on his own that they could handle it for the rest of the shift and leaves them to it.
When the stars align, the teens wait until Byron is out of sight, and close up the gift shop. Their plan is to head to the bar... and maybe try and get something out of Barley..... not much of a plan, but they don't realize it there.
They make haste, running to the bar, because time crunch (when/if complaints start rolling in.)
Bursting through the doors of the Bar, Barley gives them a look. "Don't.. do that, please."
Colette apologizes enthusiastically, and urges Edgar forward. "Ask him! I'll keep watch!"
She hops over to the door and peers through it periodically.
Meanwhile, Edgar is stammering because he didnt plan anything to say, he expected Colette to talk to the robot.
"If you two think I allow underage drinking, I most certainly do not, no matter what Penny says." Barley warns.
"Uhh, no it isn't that. ...Umm. do ya know... well, you would know about Byron, and not Belle, I guess. But they've been acting weird lately, and we want to know why."
. . .
Barley pauses in consideration.
Options and questions flood around his mind, and he still had no answer.
Wonders if he should even mention Belle's visit some time ago, or the fact that he knows more in depth about it than Byron would care for, or that if Piper found out he knew more than her, and then told these two over would she be offended? ....Actually, in that case, why was he considering telling them anyway? Well, if they were interested in the topic for genuine reasons...
Edgar doesn't even know what to do either. Barley's not saying anything.
Colette squeaks, and scrambles from the door. "Edgar!! Any luck here? Because we're out of it over there!"
"What?"
"I think I see Byron heading here!!"
Who would have thought.
this is where i kind of dropped off the outline, but to continue/wrap it up, Barley points them to the curtain that covers the back room. There's an exit there which he tells them about, but the teens stay to EAVESDROP bc they care.
Barley and Byron chat. the conversation dips into the area having to do with Belle.
Byron frowns. "If I didn't know any better, I would think you're trying to get me to admit something, Barley. I can understand Piper, but you?"
"Me?" Barley asks. "Sir, you know I never mean harm."
"..." Byron stares at him unconvinced. "If Piper did put you up to this, you can tell me."
"U.. Believe it or not, I am among others in this park who care about you, Byron."
"...." wouldn't that be nice. But Byron believes him. My bad. He humors his coworker for now. "Fine." And asks for a drink.
Barley gets him his preferred one. [Lol I'll come up with it eventually.]
They talk. Barley finds out a little more. But just a little bit. Byron... it isnt like he has practice talking about ☆~feelings~☆
The teens listening in leave before too long. Colette is like O.O;; and Edgar decides that all they wanted to know was the relation between Byron and Belle, and they got that.
She agrees, and they both leave through the back door.
Byron didn't get as drunk ofc, it's still his working hours. Just enough to loosen up a bit and get through mild robot therapy.
After his leave, Barley sees him off, and then goes to check in the back. They're gone and he has a brief "oh, thought they would have gotten the hint to, listen in. Oh, well."
[There's one more event, involving the Coworkers interacting with Belle one last time, but still unplanned <3 it leads to the meet up and the fight... somehow though. I'll release that when I think of it.]
I can also see Piper being ":0 you knew before I did? And didn't tell me? You're mischievous, Barley!" In a very light hearted way at the very end.
Barley frets ;;; "I am not!"

It had not taken him long to learn that he was not to speak of what he could see. His mother, The Doe, had laughed and patted his head. But his father, The Badger, had harshly taught him to hold his tongue. He quickly learned to read them; to hide when his father’s fur was bristled. As he grew older, he would learn to tell a potential mark by the state of their ears and tail. Now, as Dutch’s Boy, it was impossible to ignore the unspoken aggression of his family.
The Stag was weary.
His head hung low, sprawling antlers a heavy weight atop his head.
The Lion stood, fur having long gone dull with the beginnings of mange, once-handsome mane patchy, throat rumbling with a muted roar as it thundered a speech to the rest of the Gang. The Stag flattened his ears; a hoof stamped the ground. In the place where The Fox had once sat was The Rat.
The Stag had learned when he was young that no one else had the gift that he had. They did not see what he could see, did not know others for what they were. Could not read the twitching, moving ears and far too expressive tails. Saw only weathered flesh, rounded ears, never the animals that overlaid them, hovered over them like a second skin. It was only he that had to focus to see the human beneath the animal.
The Rat’s eyes may have been on The Lion, and to everyone who merely saw his human skin it would look as though The Lion had all of his attention. But its bald ears twitched this way and that, taking in the reactions of the Gang. They flicked at the ‘doubters’, the Coyote and The Stag especially. The Stag raised his head, stood tall. He would not appear weak before The Rat, no matter how heavy his head.
The Coyote, he saw, was nervous, and for good reason. Tension was high in the air. The Vixen leaned into it, the Cub - he couldn’t tell, yet, what it would be, it would just be a tangle of blurry ears and an indiscernible tail until it reached its majority - kept between them. The Coyote’s ears were back, its tail tapping nervously on the ground. It looked like a cornered beast, ready to run when given the slightest chance.
The Grizzly sat near the fire, its glassy eyes focused on The Lion. A glass bottle was cradled in its massive claws, although The Stag could see it was empty. The Grizzly swayed, causing The Wolf to step away. The Wolf and The Grizzly had gotten close as the Gang had fractured, becoming fast companions despite their previous differences. The look of reverence on The Wolf’s face was revolting, and The Stag wondered if he had ever looked as such. Would his blocky face look half so ridiculous twisted as The Wolf’s pointed muzzle was?
Perhaps louder than the roaring of the Lion was the absence of The Mouse, The Bear, The Fox and The Setter. He found himself seeking The Mouse in the corner of his eye, expecting to find it skulking among the horses. But it was gone - long gone, and yet its ghost haunted him, just as the others did. He felt it was his fault, for he had been the one to bring The Mouse into their fold, and if it had not become one of them it may have lived a much longer life; or, at least, suffered a much kinder death.
His ears twitched, the Setter’s bark carrying on the wind. The Stag caught a flash of red fur near The Tigress, and turned his head. But there was only striped orange fur, a trick of the light, perhaps. If The Setter were here, it would have been yapping, calling out The Lion. But The Setter was gone, and no one dared loose their voice.
The Rat was where The Fox had stood, and some part of The Stag - a primitive part, where the buck paced and grumbled and raged and guided him - urged him to act, to charge and fling it away, throw The Rat into the dirt and crush the life out of it as he would any vermin that managed to sneak into camp. The Rat had no right to stand where The Fox once stood, guiding The Lion with a soft voice and a steady hand; replaced with flattering, false words and sharp, leading teeth.
But he hushed the buck, calmed it as he would a wild horse. Harming The Rat would destroy what shreds of trust The Lion still held in him, ruin any chances The Stag had of getting through to it. And so there was little he could do but stand and watch, ears flicking, as he watched The Rat’s tail coil around The Lion’s paw, teeth bruxing and eyes boggling in sheer glee. The Lion roared, speaking words that were not its own, a cadence and phrasing that was wrong, and The Stag felt the noose tighten as a silver clump of fur came loose from The Lion’s dark mane.
He shivered, and shook himself, body aching with old pains. The Stag had an urge to turn and walk away, approach a watering trough, take in his appearance.
Would he see a fine brown face, streaked through with coarse grey, as though The Fox had sewn his torn flesh with its own fur? Would he see weeping bullet wounds, one for each betrayal he had suffered? For each loss that The Hounds had cost him? Would he see the noose that he constantly felt around his neck, tightening and tightening and tightening with each slip of The Lion, until he felt he would be choked and left to be skinned, to be turned into a rug and left to decorate The Rat’s tent?

Pairings: Established Kondo/Hijikata Rating: M Summary: It’s simple. Peddle medicine and find purpose. But after Hijikata is caught in a downpour that leads him right into Kondo’s arms, he realizes things are a little more complicated than he’d like to believe. [AO3]
<< Chapter 3
.*After the Rain*. Chapter 4
Tendrils of honeysuckle twisted fragrant blooms over the outer stone wall, bringing embellishment and vitality to a modest silver nameplate that bore the words Sato Residence. The habitant butterflies and hummingbirds were unfazed when Kondo hurried by their earthly paradise of flora, still impassively flitting about even when he swept beneath the bough that had grown over the main entryway.
That wasn’t to say a proper welcome wasn’t in order, however.
“Kat-chan!”
Kondo unclasped his hat and pulled it free with a shake of the head, his chin immediately lifting to the woman who stood up on the porch before him. At her side were a young girl and boy, each flailing and cheering while jumping about in delight. “Uncle came to visit! Uncle, uncle!”
“Shh!” she hissed, swatting at the space around them. “Not so loud!”
“Nao-chan, Gen-chan! Hello!” Kondo offered a wave to help placate their excitement and then turned back to Nobu, his voice falling as serious as his expression. “I’m real sorry for showing up like this without notice, but I rushed over the moment I got your letter.”
“Oh, Kat-chan, please. Do you not see these kids right now? You’re always welcome here.” She guided the children a few steps back to give him room. “Come on up!”
With a nod, Kondo placed his hat and the cloth-covered box he’d carried on the wooden floorboards, before pivoting to toe off his sandals. “Sorry for the trouble,” he said out of polite habit (and over little voices now chanting, “Big feet! Big feet!”), while bounding up to join them on the porch. Within seconds, tiny arms were tossed around his legs to deliver enthusiastic hugs. Kondo’s shoulders dipped forward so he could place one hand atop each child’s head and he greeted them with warmth. “Hey, you guys.” However, worry was written across his features when he looked to Nobu again. “How is he?”
“Besides his usual stubborn self?” The words alone were harsh but they’d been delivered with the same fondness Nobu always used when talking of her brother. She crossed her arms and one hip leisurely swung out to the side. “Doing better, thankfully. He’s still feverish but at least he’s finally in bed.”
Kondo exhaled with relief, his lashes falling as he nodded once. In the background, he was vaguely aware of teeny toes stepping on his, their owners continuing to yap about the extraordinary size of his shoes.
“Ugh, the strings I had to pull to get him to rest, Kat-chan…” Blowing out a breath, Nobu’s brow creased and she tilted her head. “You should’ve seen him this morning. Flushed! Sweating! Exhausted and grumpy, and completely unreasonable. But he was so insistent on getting dressed, no matter what.”
Connecting the dots, Kondo felt color rush to his own cheeks then and his eyes parted a little wider. “Oh no…”
“I felt so bad that it came to sending a courier and worrying you like this. But with Hiko-chan out giving lessons like the good husband he is…” Nobu closed one eye and raised her shoulders a touch. “Honestly, that letter was the only way I could convince Toshi to get himself back in bed this morning. Even then, he was up and about soon after, pacing.” A beat. “He was really looking forward to seeing you today.”
Raising his palm to his cheek, Kondo huffed as his features softened and he peered off to the side. Soon after, his focus crept back up to her with a shy apology. “I’m so sorry for the trouble, Nobu-san.”
“What are you sorry for? You know best of all that obstinacy and flair for drama are traits around these parts!”
In response to that bit of truth, Kondo could do nothing except stifle the laugh which demanded escape from his tongue. So, the pot was calling the kettle black again… His hand fell and he absently pulled at the hem of his hakamashita to keep himself in line; the last thing he needed was another Hijikata on his case for something minor, especially when Nobu could be just as irascible as Toshi—if the mood was right. “Hardly,” he finally replied, not daring to agree with her assessment, no matter how accurate. “Anyway, I’m just glad he’s okay.”
“He’ll be fine. And speaking of the other dramatics in this family.” Nobu’s gaze appropriately fell to her children then. “All right, you two, that’s it! Let’s give him some space.” The girl of seven, Nao, pouted before releasing Kondo as her mother insisted but her younger brother, Gennosuke, made no such move; he clung even tighter, then lifted his chin. “Is Souji-niichan coming?”
“Souji, huh,” Kondo exhaled. “Afraid not. He stayed home today since Uncle Toshi caught a cold.”
“Aww…”
Kondo grinned and ruffled Gennosuke’s hair. “Don’t worry, you’ll be seeing him soon.” It was a promise he’d have to make good on, for as much as this boy wanted to see Souji, Souji had wanted to accompany Kondo on his visit here; the deadpan look and manner with which his brow had twitched upon hearing the remainder of his day would be spent with Gen-san were almost comical. Alas, though, Kondo had known war tales and tea would pale in comparison to the potential thrill of antagonizing Hijikata when he was already contentious and moody. His decision to come alone had been made in the best interests of all.
In all honestly, he’d felt awful about breaking the plans which occupied Souji’s excitement for the last few days, and even sought his permission to do so; unimpressed green eyes had fallen half-lidded with a sigh. “Hijikata-san is ruining my life as usual, I see.” Despite the warranted complaint, Souji had turned on his feet afterward and wandered in the direction of the sitting room, all as Kondo’s palms met in appreciation before taking off, himself.
He’d make the blunder up soon enough. For now…
Upon hearing Nao call his name, Gennosuke let go of the leg he’d wrapped himself around, instead favoring to chase his sister across the porch and through open shoji. Kondo used this opportunity of newly granted freedom to retrieve the elegant box he’d set down earlier. Picking it up, he offered it to Nobu once she finished gently scolding the children again for their noisiness.
“Nobu-san, it’s not much, but…”
“Kat-chan!” she admonished. “You never have to bring anything.”
“I know, I know. But I ran into a fruit vendor and couldn’t pass this up though, look.” Reaching for the tied ends of fabric, Kondo loosened them slightly and fragrance drifted up from inside.
“Ara?! Peaches?!” Nobu exclaimed. “They smell so good!” She inhaled again and a large smile graced her lips. “Oh, Kat-chan, Toshi’s gonna be so happy, you don’t even know. Between you visiting and bringing these? I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s cured in a split second.”
Kondo smiled widely at that, a hand coming up to rub at the back of his neck. “That would be ideal, wouldn’t it?”
“Only one way to find out! C’mon,” she said with a wink and toss of her head, “let’s go see how bad of a mood he’s in.”
~
Companionable silence descended as Nobu led Kondo down a long stretch of porch and then around the corner, leaving them both standing at the threshold of a closed door.
“Toshi,” Nobu called softly while placing her palm against the entrance. When no reply came she tried again. However, upon being greeted with quiet for a second time, she carefully slid the shoji aside and peered in with Kondo leaning over her to do the same.
“Ah…” he whispered, lingering a moment more before righting himself. Nobu looked up at him with questioning eyes and Kondo nodded once to offer his agreement. And just like that, the door was closed as quietly as it had been opened.
“You know, Kat-chan…” When Kondo offered to carry the box for her as they began walking again, Nobu only hugged it closer. “I’ve known my brother for almost twenty years at this point and it’s still hard to believe that that…innocent face he makes while sleeping belongs to him.”
“Mm?” Kondo chuckled.
“Almost makes me believe in those ridiculous stories about shapeshifters…those scary ones that really do terrify the hell out of you when you’re younger but you never want to admit it.”
“Are you admitting it now?”
“I guess I am!”
Suppressing what would have been a hearty, resounding laugh, Kondo managed to control the volume of his amusement and then agreed. “You have a point, though. Angry Toshi is certainly scary Toshi.” A beat. “And it’s always a good idea to stay on his good side…unless you’re brave.” Upon arriving back at the front of the house, he cast a glance toward the main gate and his lower eyelids lifted just a touch. “Souji is brave.”
“Oh, that kid is a master of getting under my brother’s skin for sure. But make no mistake about it!” Nobu stamped one foot to drive her point home. “Toshi cares deeply for him. I know, if just from seeing how he interacts with my own.”
“Heh, I know it, too!” Kondo crossed his arms with a grin pulling far into his cheeks. “Those two may be like oil and water, but in some cases, oil and water can actually work together, you know. I can’t imagine my life without either. Everything just feels…” Affection swelled in his chest and perhaps had him speaking a bit too openly. “…so complete.”
“That’s good,” came the matter-of-fact voice at his side. “Because I can’t imagine Toshi’s life without you in it, either.”
With a blink, the contented expression fell from Kondo’s face and when his attention turned back to Nobu, he found her studying him with an inkling of pensiveness. “Oh…um—”
“Ne.” She cocked her head toward the kitchen. “You comin’ in?”
“Ah, Nobu-san, I don’t wanna put you out or anything. I just came to make sure—”
“Here, then. Since you’ve been insisting on carrying them.” Nobu thrust the peaches into Kondo’s arms. “Now you’re useful. Follow me.”
“I—” Kondo pursed his lips when he received a very familiar piercing gaze over her shoulder and the sight of it had him immediately relenting. “Mm, right. Yes, on my way.”
Tiny crimson baubles dangling from Nobu’s hair pin danced with a laugh just as animated. “That’s more like it! My last name may be Sato but never doubt I’m a Hijikata through and through!”
“Believe me.” Kondo stepped into sandals (small and uncomfortable, but they would do) waiting on the finished stone floor of the kitchen and set the box on a counter. “I’m smart enough to never dream of doing that.” His gaze drifted around the space and he watched while Nobu approached the pot that had been set over a small flame. The air smelled of comfort—of burning wood and appetizing rice porridge.
“I want to talk with you about some things, but I need to take care a few odds and ends in here first.” She picked up a hand towel to protect herself from the heat and then slid the cover off just enough to look inside. A billow of steam rose from within and the lid was immediately replaced. “Am I right to assume you’re gonna fight me if I tell you to go relax in the sitting room?”
“Who could possibly just sit around when there’s porridge to garnish and other things around here to do?”
Nobu huffed out of her nose. “You’re a good man, Kat-chan.” She opened a nearby cabinet and procured a jar. “Impossibly humble, but certainly good.”
“So, those scallions over there…which knife can I use?”
“Taku.” However, Nobu was grinning softly as she nodded toward a drawer. “Any one you want.”
“Got it.” With that, Kondo plucked the light green stalks from the vegetable basket, brought them to a free area of countertop, and began dicing. Across the way, Nobu removed handfuls of pickled plums from the jar and began extracting the pits.
“You know,” she started, while nimble fingers worked at their task with quickness and efficiency. “I’ve known you for a pretty long time too, but I don’t know if I ever thanked you. Have I?”
“Thanked me?” Kondo asked, his tone gentle and rising with curiosity. “For what?”
“Toshi’s my brother, but…well, I suppose it sounds a little silly since we’re so close in age, but I also think of him as my first son. After our parents died, someone had to step up and I guess it was just in my instinct to be the one who would.”
“It’s not silly at all. That explains why Toshi is so strong.” Chop, chop, chop. “Because Nobu-san is.”
“Cht…please.” Her voice fell, but Kondo could hear the smile she tried to conceal. “Anyway, he was our family’s little prince and I just wanted him to have a good life, especially after all that happened. And I still do.” Kondo finished his task then and peered over at Nobu; she stood still, her digits paused in mid-action of pitting with her chin raised and eyes focused on the wall before her. “It’s tough, though, the balance of having my own kids and everything.” Her shoulders shrugged and she went back to her work.
“I can only imagine…”
“That’s why we tried sending Toshi for that apprenticeship. Everyone here was so adamant on turning him into a successful merchant.” Nobu cocked her head. “But we all know how that turned out.” A beat. “…Bowl’s over there if you wanna put those scallions in something.”
“Well, I’m not following…didn’t it turn out for the best?” Kondo asked, while doing as he was told. “I mean, sure, the textile business didn’t work out but now he’s so good at selling your family’s medicine, so…” He drifted off when Nobu quietly chuckled, and then joined her with a small laugh of his own. “What?”
“That’s the point I’m getting to, Kat-chan. You’re always so encouraging, always have something good to say. Can Toshi do no wrong in your eyes?” She looked up to meet his gaze.
“Uh…I mean, no one is perfect.” He set his mouth in a line. “I’m certainly not, so how could I expect that of someone else?”
The corners of Nobu’s mouth twitched further with fondness. “If you want my opinion, I don’t think the reason why he’s so good at medicine peddling is because of his apprentice work. Maybe he learned some skills there that helped, but…” She paused. “I think it’s because you drive him to do his best.”
Kondo finally turned all the way to face her. “…Me?”
“Toshi was never exactly going down the wrong path, but I still worried about him,” Nobu spoke while tossing the readied plums on a dish and gathering discarded portions in her palm. “He wasn’t happy with the idea of just owning a shop or even inheriting our land. And I agree. I think he’s made for something different.” She discarded the refuse in a bag, then found Kondo’s eyes. “Something more.”
He licked his lips and glanced at the floor, as guilt began to pang within his stomach. What Nobu was saying sounded positive, but Kondo wondered if there was an ulterior motive to this conversation that wasn’t so promising in the end; after all, he’d been the one to tell Hijikata it was all right to have not finished the apprenticeship, that it’d been okay to not want to spend his life on a farm.
Kondo hadn’t said any of it lightly or with the intent of frivolous enablement; the words had been meant to both comfort and appeal to Hijikata’s best interests—but perhaps his best interests hadn’t aligned with the vision this family had for their youngest. And if that had caused a wedge between them…
“Kat-chan…” The kindness in Nobu’s voice brought Kondo back to her. “What I’m saying is, I wasn’t sure how to set him on the path to finding happiness. But I think you can. Or, that you already have.” She closed her eyes and with a huff, shook her head. “My older brother would go crazy if he heard us talking now because I know for damn sure he doesn’t agree. But, this world is changing. And I think we should all be able to chase what we dream of most. Like…what makes us excited to get up in the morning, instead of just living out of obligation.”
A choppy breath left Kondo’s lips then and his chin fell in a strong nod. “I agree.” His hands met his waist before a second guess made him wonder if it was too direct a stance; he therefore settled on crossing his arms before him instead. “I agree with that so much. Especially with my situation.”
“It’s what I’m doing too, after all.” Nobu grinned. “I have my family. That’s really what I wanted more than anything. And I want each of them to lead the best life possible, but it’s hard to keep tabs on them all, especially with…” She patted her midsection.
Kondo stared at her in confusion—and then it clicked. “…Oh.” His spine went a little straighter. “Oh, wow! That’s…that’s great news! Congratulations!”
“But when your family’s growing, everything’s so busy all the time. I can’t always be there for Toshi.” Nobu put out the flame beneath the porridge and once the bubbling background noise died out, she turned back to Kondo. “So, thank you for being the one who is.”
Absentmindedly itching at his jaw and then massaging the side of his neck, Kondo’s gaze fell down and off to the side. “Um…it’s…” He found himself incapable of stopping his own shy grin then. “It’s mutually beneficial. If you think I’ve done him any good at all, well…you should hear about all he’s done for me. It’s incomparable. I mean, if it weren’t for Toshi, then I—” His words trailed off when he noticed the softness falling from Nobu’s expression. “Sorry, I’m…talking a lot, aren’t I?”
A huff. “Oh, no.” With a swift turn to the counter, she braced the heel of palms against it and pushed her lips out. “Not at all.” Nobu’s tone dropped. “But maybe I have.”
Bewildered, Kondo caught onto the conflicted expression that was ascertainable even from seeing just the side of her face. His mouth opened but he stopped himself before speaking again, as the clear shift in demeanor indicated something profound had happened right under his nose without him even noticing.
“...Nobu-san,” Kondo ventured gently, taking a step toward her.
“Kat-chan, look. This might be overstepping. And maybe it makes me a terrible sister who can’t mind her own business. But.” She drummed her fingertips twice before pushing away from the edge, and when their eyes met, concern was clear and present in hers. “Has Toshi…” Nobu shook her head once with a wince before finally giving in. “Has he talked to you about this long trip he’s planning to take?”
Kondo blinked.
And though he couldn’t say he’d been surprised by her question, his heart seemed to grow a mind of its own as it began pounding hard against its ribbed enclosure. Then, from that central place in his chest, an ache swelled and burned—permeated right from the core to paralyze him.
Or at least that’s how it felt, for in that moment, it seemed to Kondo that he’d forgotten how to speak.

Let’s Play “Moments: Going Up” Part 8
Nella goes to get “rubber stamped” by HR in the morning, and then she was given the grand tour of the office. Her new boss, Ivor, asks if she's good with computers, and asks her if she knows how to use a tablet. She says that she gets the general idea of them, so it probably shouldn't be too much a of a problem. One of the other co-works comes in with coffees, and asks why it's so hard for some other people to get the gist of what it is that they do there. June then says that they're going for lunch at the coffee shop Nella used to work at, if Nella would like to join them.
Nella goes down to Edge. She still feels bitter that Julian was going to fire that other girl just to keep her on, but offers him a friendly smile when she gets into the shop. June is by herself, and says that the others are behind on a deadline. June gives Nella a salad, and says that Nella will be reporting to Selina. She laughs and says that the 13 floor is the “devil's lair”, but is bolstered by Nella's opinion that she can handle it. She tells Nella about the report that she can send in to the bosses up stairs. June also asks that Nella should hang around that floor to pick up on any gossip. But Nella doesn't want to be a spy, especially not against Selina. But June insists that Nella should at least keep her ears open. Nella is more pissed off that she's been dragged into something like this. Nella then changes the subject and asks June how long she's been working there. June says six months after Selina, and she's pissed that Selina climbed the cooperate ladder faster than she did.
They go back to the office, and Nella goes up to the aforementioned 13th floor, despite her initial unease over the entire thing. Selina greets Nella, and asks how her first day is going. Nella gives her the report, and Selina says that most of them would want to come upstairs to talk to Selina. They sit down to talk about the report, and halfway through, she asks about June. Specifically, if June asked Nella to spy on Selina. Nella says that she doesn't want to get involved, but Selina asks “why do you think that I hired you?” Ugh. She says that she's joking, but then says that if Nella hears anything... Nella says that she's not going to spy for Selina, either. She then thanks Nella for coming up, and says that Nella can give a proper report later, when she knows more info on what it is that she's saying. She then expresses shock over how late it is, and that June will want to speak with Nella before she leaves. She then asks Nella to dinner again later, at the same restaurant. What, really? Twice in as many days? Girl, you gotta mix it up a little. Nella says that she's not going to spy for Selina, and Selina only grins.
Nella goes back downstairs, where June is the only one left. She's kind of disappointed when Nella says that nothing exciting happened. Nella says that she doesn't want to play Switzerland for whatever is going on between June and Selina. June says that when she has Selina's job, then Nella can have June's current job. She then says that Nella can go home, and asks where Nella lives, in the hopes of carpooling in the future. Nella lies and says that she's pretty far away, and decides not to get into her circumstances. June doesn't question this, and says goodbye.
Outside, Nella muses over the weird Selina/June situation. She then fusses over her appearance before deciding that it probably doesn't matter and walks to the restaurant. She finds Selina looking grumpy, and asks what's wrong. Selina says that it's not something that Nella can fix, and quickly changes the topic to food. They eat, but when they're done, Selina brings up work. This makes Nella think that she's going to continue yapping about June, but Selina says that there's always drama at work. (Ugh, what is this, high school?) She insists that she doesn't want for Nella to get caught up in that nonsense, and says that they should put out boundaries. Work is for work, and no private life there. Outside of work hours, they can talk about anything except for work. But the way that she says it makes Nella think that Selina is looking for a relationship with Nella. But Nella agrees that what Selina says makes sense. Selina once again offers to let Nella stay with her, but Nella is too afraid of becoming dependent on somebody, and says no. They hug goodbye, and Selina says that she's proud of Nella before she leaves. Then Nella is like “shit, are we dating?” She's also upset to find that Selina paid the bill for their food before she left the restaurant. Again.
That's June
And that's Ivor.

The Europas Unconference & Awards is back on 3 July in London and we’re excited to announce major European investor Saul Klein, founder and partner of LocalGlobe, is joining as a main speaker. He’ll be talking about his ideas for startups in this new era, as well as bringing Zinc.vc, his new initiative to back ‘startups for good’.
Saul is a Founding Partner at Localglobe, a seed fund focussed on helping London’s great most ambitious founders build game-changing businesses. Previously, Saul was a Partner at Index Ventures from 2007 until May 2015. In 2012 David Cameron appointed Saul to be the UK’s first tech envoy to Israel and a Technology Business Ambassador.
Saul is a serial entrepreneur with two decades of experience building and exiting companies in the US, Israel and Europe. He has a passion for working with seed and early-stage businesses. Most recently Saul co-founded Kano and Seedcamp, as well as a co-founder and original CEO of Lovefilm International (acquired by Amazon). He was also part of the original executive team at Skype (acquired by eBay).
Additionally, we’ll also be joined by Eileen Burbidge of Passion Capital, the early-stage VC fund based in London. She brings extensive operational experience to her investment activities gleaned from business and product roles at Yahoo!, Skype, Apple and elsewhere.
In addition to Passion Capital, Eileen is also the Chair of TechNation UK, which is the British government-backed organisation supporting digital business across the UK. She is also HM Treasury’s Special Envoy for FinTech appointed by then Chancellor George Osborne; Tech Ambassador for the Mayor of London’s office and served on former Prime Minister David Cameron’s Business Advisory Group.
Eileen was made an MBE for services to Business in June 2015 and holds a BSc Engineering degree in Computer Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
You’ll also hear from angels and investors including Seedcamp’s Carlos Eduardo Espinal; Accel Partners’ Andrei Brasoveanu; Jeremy Yap; Candice Lo of Blossom Capital; Scott Sage of Crane Venture Partners; Tugce Ergul of Angel Labs; Stéphanie Hospital of OneRagtime; Connect Ventures’ Sitar Teli and Jason Ball of Qualcomm Ventures.
There will be more speakers and panel sessions as the event takes shape.
Crypto and Blockchain will be a major theme this year, and we’re bringing together many of the key players. TechCrunch is once again the key media partner, and if you attend The Europas you’ll be first in the queue to get offers for TC events and Disrupt in Europe later in the year.
You can also potentially get your ticket for free just by sharing your own ticket link with friends and followers. See below for the details and instructions.
To recap, we’re jumping straight into our popular breakout sessions where you’ll get up close and personal with some of Europe’s leading investors, founders and thought leaders.
The Unconference is focused into zones including AI, Fintech, Mobility, Startups, Society, and Enterprise and Crypto / Blockchain.
Our Crypto HQ will feature two tracks of panels, one focused on investing and the other on how blockchain is disrupting everything from financial services, to gaming, to social impact to art.
We’ve lined up some of the leading blockchain VCs to talk about what trends and projects excite them most, including Outlier Ventures’ Jamie Burke, KR1’s George McDonaugh, blockchain angel Nancy Fenchay, Fabric Ventures’ Richard Muirhead and Michael Jackson of Mangrove Capital Partners.
Thinking of an ICO vs crowdfunding? Join Michael Jackson on how ICOs are disrupting venture capital and Ali Ganjavian, co-founder of Studio Banana, the creators of longtime Kickstarter darling OstrichPillow to understand the ins and outs of both.
We’ve also lined up a panel to discuss the process of an ICO – what do you need to consider, the highs, the lows, the timing and the importance of community. Linda Wang, founder and CEO of Lending Block, which recently raised $10 million in an April ICO, joins us.
We are thrilled to announce that Civil, the decentralised marketplace for sustainable journalism, will be joining to talk about the rise of fake news and Verisart’s Robert Norton will share his views on stamping out fraud in the art world with blockchain. Min Teo of ConsenSys will discuss blockchain and social impact and Jeremy Millar, head of Consensys UK, will speak on Smart Contracts.
Our Pathfounders Startup Zone is focused purely on startups. Our popular Meet the Press panel is back where some of tech’s finest reporters will tell you what makes a great tech story, and how to pitch (and NOT pitch them). For a start, TechCrunch’s Steve O’Hear and Quartz’s Joon Ian Wong are joining.
Sound great? You can grab your ticket here.
All you need to do is share your personal ticket link. Your friends get 15% off, and you get 15% off again when they buy.
The more your friends buy, the more your ticket cost goes down, all the way to free!

The Europas Unconference & Awards is back on 3 July in London and we’re excited to announce more speakers and panel sessions as the event takes shape.
You’ll also hear from angels and investors including Seedcamp’s Carlos Eduardo Espinal; Eileen Burbidge of Passion Capital; Accel Partners’ Andrei Brasoveanu; Jeremy Yap; Candice Lo of Blossom Capital; Scott Sage of Crane Venture Partners; Tugce Ergul of Angel Labs; Stéphanie Hospital of OneRagtime; Connect Ventures’ Sitar Teli and Jason Ball of Qualcomm Ventures.
Sound great? You can grab your ticket here.
All you need to do is share your personal ticket link. Your friends get 15% off, and you get 15% off again when they buy.
The more your friends buy, the more your ticket cost goes down, all the way to free!
