Outside of Cuba, Palo is generally called Palo Mayombe ; however, this is a misnomer since not all lineages and houses are truly Mayombe – in fact, most are not. To my knowledge there is only one (perhaps a couple) Munanzo outside of Cuba that are accepted as a true Mayombe houses amongst the elders on the Island.
Tumblr media
In Cuba, “Palo Monte” is used far more frequently to speak to the entire body of Regla-Kongo Palo tradition. Other terms such as Palo Cruzado (‘crossed palo’, denoting heavy syncretization with other religions), Palo Cristiano (‘Christian palo’) and Palo Judio (‘Jewish palo’, not actually jewish, but simply non-Christian) deserve a brief mention. However, these are not specific ramas of Palo, but rather terms that are used to denote the degree of syncretism and mixing in individual lineages and practices.
There are many houses (munansos) and foundational lineages (ramas) of Palo Monte, but commonly they are understood to fit within three major  forms or sub ‘reglas’ within the greater Regla-Kongo:
Mayombe
Biyumba (Vrillumba o Brillumba)
Kimbiza
Palo Mayombe is the oldest and most orthodox form of Palo. The origins trace back to a specific Nkisi cult in the Mayombe region of Cabinda (NW Congo) from where it gets its name and the tradition came into its own in the caves and wilderness of the Pinar del Rio highlands of Cuba. Mayomberos typically shun away from syncretism and are extremely orthodox in our practices. The most well known of the Mayombe houses are the houses of “Batalla Saca Empeño” and “Bejuco Nfinda”.
Palo Biyumba developed out of Palo Mayombe and rose in popularity during Cuba’s war of Independence. It was the first regla to initiate people of non-Bantu ancestry and frequently worked with and developed pacts with dead spirits of no particular blood or spiritual lineage (often times to send them out for warring intentions). It is a vast regla and has many ramas and sub-lineages. Indeed, a great number of houses today are some offshoot of Biyumba. Broadly speaking, Palo Biyumba is more oriented toward the various mpungos and over time some lineages have introduced a degree of syncretization with elements of Ocha and Catholicism.
Palo Kimbisa was popular on the eastern side of the Cuban island and has absorbed many influences from Catholicism to Freemasonry to Haitian Vodou. Kimbisa likely originated within an already syncretized Catholic-Kongo religious tradition from the Kingdom of Kongo following Kimpa Vita’s Christian reform in the 18th C. In Kimbisa the mpungos are paramount and are seen as divinities and saints. Thus, Kimbiseros will venerate the mpungos and focus much of their work calling upon them, instead of upon the dead. The most well known Kimbisa rama is Andrés Petit’s La Regla Kimbisa de Santo Cristo del Buen Viaje.
The Kimbisa prendas/ngangas I have seen also tend to be huge in comparison to Mayombe. Although my elders have reassured me that there are Kimbisa prendas that are built almost identical to Mayombe as there is more variance per house/lineage than across the greater sub-reglas. It is also common to see Kimbisa (as well as Briyumba) prendas with crucifixes. Moreover, many Kimbiseros and Biymberos will make a distinction between prendas judias or prendas ndoki(those without crucifixes and containing the bones of non-baptized individuals) used to curse, kill, and other malefica; and prendas cristianas (with cross and baptized nfumbe) used to heal and general benefica. This distinction does not appear in Mayombe.

ATR's, For Followers - NOT Leaders
Tumblr media
My altar to my muerto a couple of years ago. Lights, water and fruit. Happy muerto!
Before reading, take note: I've always been on the fringe of the ATR's because I absolutely refuse to comply to certain rules and behaviors. I won't stay on the straight and narrow, I won't be anyone's concept of "normal." Why? It feels wrong to me.
What are my issues with ATR's? For one, the male dominance. Babalawos do take precedence over iyas. There are far less women priestess' who work with Orula/Orunmila for divination. There's more diliogun but...it seems lesser, even though the same Odu are read and interpreted.
I do not like that women (at least in Palo) do not perform animal sacrifice because "women are the givers of life." I don't want to kill animals, get that straight! But women CAN be the takers of life too! So just because we give life doesn't mean we shouldn't be able to fucking sing to the animal and properly cut their throat for offering. Sorry! It seems like Yaya's do get the shorter end of the palo, oh, I mean STICK.
ATR's seem to have an obsession with cleanliness too. Is that because in the past, the environment that tribal ppl lived in was made of dirt and mud? Fuck if I know. I'm very clean, but I don't believe in scrubbing my walls all of the time and constantly taking cleansing baths, or wearing cocoa butter, cascarilla, goat milk, eggs, cotton leaf and sauco on my head to please Obatala or use any other rogation for that matter! Don't these ppl realize that this "cleanliness" actually attracts more negative emotions and entities in the long run - hence - the more need to use them? Especially with ppl who have depression!! I'm living proof that. Ifá practices just made me worse - being VERY serious here. My babalawo did not know anything about depression. He just insisted, more Ori cleansings, more oriki's to Obatala, pray to Shango (Papa) for strength and to Oshun (Mama) for balance of "womanly emotions." As he put it.
You know, come to think of it, the only good luck that I had in the ATR's was Tata Antonio, my dead padrino (godfather). I'm now convinced that EVERYONE else was a fucking fraud! They were!!! Total fakes! Even baba and iya. Sad but true.
That's a YUGE problem in ATR's - fucking FRAUDS! Taking thousands of dollars from ppl promising spiritual enlightenment and great POWERS. Bull-fucking-hockey!!! A very close and long time friend of mine got HUGELY ripped off by Paleros. Paid thousands for initiations but got extremely little education about the religion! They don't even stay in contact with him - FUNNY thing was...He met them through me. I was looking for rayamiento myself!! Had a bad feeling, but my friend still went for it. He did get a Baston de Muerto and a few other things but was not taught how to use them properly. I am teaching him Muerteria and will instruct him our use of the Dead Man's Staff.
Anyway, I'll go on. I've ever only seen light mention of Yaya's existing but never heard of one in any presence of a Tata I've known. There's never been anything I've seen written about women in Palo Mayombe, Palo Monte, Palo Kimbisa, or Palo Brillumba. There's one black woman's video I've run across and need to watch about why she left Palo for other Congo spirituality. I've been meaning to.
They SAY women are supposed to be important as mothers and nurturers but I know there are more roles. We are the natural herbalists and healers - don't care if men disagree here. Yes, in the Western world lots of doctors are male, always have been. But women, I believe have been the first of the healers because of our innate ability so sense where, what's the cause, and what the illness is. Orunmila may have been the Divine Physician, but...was there a woman around him perhaps? I haven't read all of his patakis or oriki materials.
I don't like LIES. I don't like THIEVERY. I realize that you have to have a con to live in this world of milk and honey - but ffs! Not with spirituality! Listen. I know the ceremonies cost money but a lot of things are donated. Animals are raised for ritual too. Now, when it comes to ngangas or fundamentos - yes, I understand the prices. Very work intensive and a lot of ingredients are needed, especially the kriyumba. That alone is thousands of dollars. And its hard to come by chemicals like mercury, which is essential for the nganga to function.
The nkisi and orishas don't appreciate this post of me bitching but they told me "to get it out of my system." They keep thinking that I'm coming back for good. I really doubt it but the look that I get from them is that nodding, knowing glance. I'm saying FUCK NO. Explicit enough? It has to be or I'm not taken seriously. Tbh, there's only ONE nkisi that I'm barely interested in: Centella Ndoki. And ONE orisha: Oshumare. And NEITHER are interested in me, so fuck 'em!
But why no real interest, again? I reiterate: Muerteria, that's why. It is developing! Though...I have found that I cannot write a lot of it down. Not for a book. The reason I'm getting from the muertos is that this information can be shared in emails but just as teachings - and only to my students. I just got this information too! Only students, otherwise, the muertos stay silent! 🤷 And I got all excited about a book project! Muerteria: Not for the masses which means not tumblr either. Sorry. I can share some stuff and photos though. My student, P. should be getting more info soon! He's a good worker, older than me and helped me with Santa Muerte. Got to get to work.
This post is a RANT, but one thing is that there is truth and things to ponder and maybe ask your padrino or madrina, Tata...or Yaya?

Hello Beloved...Who Am I?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hi, I am Luar Wolf, and I use Lulu. 32 years old. Sun in Aries, Rising Leo, Moon in Capricorn. I home many identities in my lived experiences carrying each with honor and grace. I am Puertorriqueñx and Dominicanx with ancestral roots and lineages of Afro-Descendiente, Indigenous Taino, and Basque-Iberian. I am non-binary, trans, queer, and intersex. I was born, raised, and lived on Occupied Munsee Lenape Land (New York City). I currently live in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
For more than a decade, my ancestral and cultural roots in Afro-Caribbean traditions have evolved into practicing Espiritismo, Palo Brillumba (Vriyumba), and Ocha. As a seasoned Espiritista, I function as a medium, facilitating and channeling the transmission of messages from spirit guides and ancestral beings. My expertise encompasses guiding Mesa Blanca (White Table) ceremonies, adeptly interpreting the guiding central figures of one's Cuadro Espiritual (Spiritual Court), and assisting in healing one's ancestral lineages and generational curses.
Within the complex framework of Palo Brillumba (or Vriyumba), I hold the initiatory titles of Tata Nkisi and now Tata Nganga, defined and translated as the 'Father of the Spirits' and 'Father of the Nganga'. This tradition, deeply rooted in the Afro-Cuban Bantu/Kongo traditions, weaves together elements of sorcery, necromancy, and a profound connection with natural forces, utilizing the sacred bones of the dead and tools of the natural world.
My exploration extends into Ocha (also known as Lukumi and Santeria), where I am known as an Aborisha, walking towards the revered Kariocha initiation. My Alagbatori is Oya Yansa, the Orisa marked on my head (Ori), who is the Orisha of Storms, Gatekeeper of the Cemeteries, and Queen of the Dead. I have received through ceremonies by my Elders the following: Elekes, the Warrior Orishas, Olokun, Ibejis, & Inle.
Originating from a foundation in Witchcraft, I am an eclectic practitioner of Traditional Witchcraft and hold an intimate relationship with Hekate, Queen of Witches. I work exclusively with Her epithet of Hekate Lyko, Lukaine, & Lukodamna. In these epithets, She is the Wolf-Formed, Wolf-Tamer, & She-Wolf.
Finally, I am a Reiki Practitioner. My skills have been refined through decolonial training with the NYC POC Healing Circle. I have shifted my reiki practices to be respectful of their cultural origins to one more aligned with my cultural practices of 'Laying of the Hands', a similar energetic healing practice.
In my community work, I am dedicated to crafting sacred spaces grounded in a decolonial and healing justice framework. My focus is on nurturing the transformative journey, embracing the metamorphosis into the rooted sacredness of our true selves. Drawing upon the intricate webs of ancestral lineages, I actively dismantle generational trauma and break curses through the practice of ancestral veneration and spirit work.
I extend an invitation to you to engage with my approach by bringing your full authenticity, sharing your personal truths, and embracing your lived experiences. Together, let us embark on the profound work of honoring ourselves, ancestors-in-the-making. As the living dreams and legacy of those who paved the way before us, we straddle two worlds—one foot planted firmly in this reality and the other in the realm where we connect with ancestral dead and our guiding spirits, present in our first and last breaths.
Sincerely,
La Loba Luna Luz,

STOP ASKING PALEROS FOR NGANGAS!!!!.
Let's give you a reality check. Everybody can't and shouldn't be scratched. Everyone can't and shouldn't have an nganga. It has to do a lot with ancestry, path and energy.
1) ANCESTRY - palo is a bantu way of working with spirits meaning people of bantu origin worked that way. NOT BLACK PEOPLE, NOT ALL MELANENATED PEOPLE, BANTU. There are a lot of different bantu tribes and they each did different things in terms of preparation of fetishes, how they handled their dead and even divination techniques. Even in bantu tribes, not everybody was an Nganga/Mganga. It was a title given based on initiation and training.
BUT WHY ARE SO MANY LATINOS IN IT? Believe it or not, latin americans got more bantu slaves than USA, they were christianized by portuguese first and they have a longer history with the portugese and spanish than the dutch, french and english. SO, there are more cubans and brazilians walking around with bantu ancestors than the typical african american. Again, not every descendant is initiated.
BUT WHY ARE WHITE PEOPLE IN IT? There are always exceptions, who the hell knows who white americans had sex with back in the day. A lot will have some brown people, if you shake that family tree. Plus money talks especially in cuba, mexico and USA.
PALO IS ONLY ONE WAY OF WORKING BANTU SPIRITUALITY SPLIT OVER DIFFERENT BRANCHES CALLED RAMAS
Hoodoo and umbanda are bantu derivative practices that work with just the techniques or spirit guides of bantu (and other groups) origin. There are also bantu spirits in haitan vodou and techniques in Makaya secret societies. However, when you look at priests in ghana, senegal, togo and benin, these "techniques" look similar more now than originally.
2) PATH- every potential palero has to be checked by a qualified palero through a reading to see if this is even something in your spiritual path, then you are given a registro to see if you can initiate in that rama or house. Again, money should not be a factor, but guess what even the spirits want to get fed sometimes. Just because someone will initiate you doesn't mean, they will train you, doesn't mean they won't use you as an atm or a power source.
NKISI ARE NOT OMNISCIENT ALL BENEVOLENT SPIRITS, SOME RAMAS DON'T EVEN WORK WITH MPUNGO (THE BANTU FORCES OF NATURE) JUST THE NFUMBE (THE SPIRIT OF THE DEAD PERSON IN THE NGANGA/VESSEL)
SO A RANDOM DEAD PERSON CAN SAY ANYTHING.
REALITY CHECK: STOP THINKING JUST BECAUSE A PALERO TOLD YOU COULD POSSIBLE BE A PALERO THAT YOU ARE CHOSEN.
3) ENERGY - Everyone has a different capacity for working with different types of energies based on their soul, ancestors, spirit guides, gifts, etc. SOME PEOPLE WILL NEVER DISPLAY PSYCHIC OR SPIRITUAL GIFTS IN THIS LIFETIME. SOME PEOPLE WILL NEVER BE MEDIUMS. SOME PEOPLE WILL NEVER BE PRIESTS. This is determined at birth. THERE ARE LEVELS IN PALO. PAYING DOESN"T DETERMINE YOUR LEVEL. IN FACT, IF YOU GET INITIATED PAST THE LEVEL YOU ARE DESTINED, IT CAN CAUSE YOU PROBLEMS, AND MAYBE EVEN FUCK YOU UP. PALO IS NOT FORGIVING, YOU CANT TRICK THESE SPIRITS. YOUR OWN PALO SPIRITS ARE ALLOWED TO KILL YOU IF YOU BREAK YOUR PACTS. THIS IS CORE CONCEPT OF AN NKISI, A CONTRACT WITH A SPIRIT. THE REAL NGANGA IS THE PRIEST, THE TATA or YAYA/I.
STOP ASKING PALEROS TO MAKE YOU AN NGANGA, I SAY PALEROS BECAUSE IN MOST RAMAS WOMEN CANNOT MAKE/BUILD THEM, SOME DON'T EVEN LET THEM RECEIVE ONE AND IF THEY DO IT'S LIMITED TO FEMALE NKISI. THERE ARE OUTLIERS BUT SOME DON"T RECEIVE THEM UNTIL MENSTRUATION STOPS.
EVERY RAYAMIENTO NEEDS A YAYA THERE. IF SOMEONE IS TRYING TO SCRATCH YOU WITH ONLY ONE GENDER PRESENT, IT IS NOT AN INITIATION, THEY PLAN TO DO A SHOW AND FUCK YOU UP.
AND A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE GETTING FUCKED UP EVEN WITH TATAS WHO KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING, CUTTING CORNERS TO REDUCE COSTS.
NOT EVERYONE GETS TO BE A TATA!! THERE ARE LEVELS OF TATA!! NOT EVERY TATA WILL HAVE A PRENDA!! NOT EVERY TATA WILL HAVE A PRENDA TO SCRATCH YOU ON!! NOT EVERY TATA CAN BUILD AN NGANGA! NOT EVERY PALERO IS ALLOWED TO SCRATCH YOU!
SO NO, A NON-INITITATE IS NOT GETTING A PRENDA/NGANGA

Palo mayombe, is closely related to the origins of the Bantúes tribes as part of a kind of religion that developed in Central Africa, was later taken to the Isle of Cuba, where he joined other religions coming from Africa, specifically Yoruba, taking specific characteristics with regard to the traditions of the island, knows more about this religious current by reading this article.
Tumblr media
The Palo mayombe comes from the oldest African beliefs, where “Palo” means tree, and it was considered sacred spirits, because where the souls of the dead lived, this belief reached the northern part of America, especially in all the Antilles, which along with colonialism dispersed towards Central America, however, it is in Cuba, where this religious current took hold and mixed with other African spiritual currents that during that time arrived in Cuba, the Yorubas and the Lucumí. These religions also developed in Brazil and certain regions of the United States. Where they joined with spiritual lines such as Santería and Candombié, creating particular religions such as Shamanism and Voodoo. El Palo, as many call it, has a series of rules called:
Mayombe.
It is a religious cult contained in Palo Monte, where the main belief is based on the natural powers and the veneration of the ancestral spirits that have lived in the African regions. It is a ritual that attempts to establish communication with the dead, through songs, dances and prayers in the “Kikongo” language. For many it is a magic that is responsible for keeping Good (Mbote) and Evil (Mbi) level.
Tumblr media
It is characterized by working with the energies of the Nfumbe or dead person and uses two Nganga: one for good and one for harm, it is a traditional and conservative rule. Its practice is carried out entirely in Cuba and has spread to other regions of America, such as the United States, Colombia, Venezuela, Panama, Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Panama. However, the large brotherhoods annually receive large numbers of santeros, where they are trained in the ceremonies, rites and activities that allow them to be carried out in different countries.
Tumblr media
Brillumba.
Second rule or current within the Palo Monte, which is born from the rules of the previous one. It is very common among the so-called paleros, it comes from the Mayombe rule, where the main characteristic is the use of skulls, in Cuba it was syncretized and Christianized, its foundations are: lightning, zarabanda, mother water, earth. The rite is based on the innovation of the Congo god called Mpumgu, who is the African version of the Yoruba and Lucumi Orishas.
Changany.
It is a current that derives from the Brillumba, original from Cuba, within the Palera spirituality, they cannot deliver Lucero, it is really a sacred house that the Tatas use to perform the Rayas and it is closely related to this current in the ceremonies and spiritual procedures , is a kind of variation that is a little more complex in the rituals and energy processing.
Tumblr media
Kimbiza.
The Palo Kimbiza Rule is characterized by linking the forces of nature as animated spirits, to whom it offers shelter to all the souls that inhabit the earth. Its ceremony is performed near a cedar tree called Ngangas, where it becomes a recipient. of the soul of a deceased person, who has previously established to reach Ngangas when he was alive. The Kimbiza order of Santo Cristo del Buen Viaje, created by Tata Andrés Facundo Cristo de los Dolores Petit, is the first completely Cuban religion. The priests of Palo Mayombe are called “Palero” or “Tata”, which represents the father, and “Palera” “Yaya”, mother if she is a woman. Each one must have great knowledge about magic and divination, but to aspire to be a Palero, the person must first pass a test, and check if they are accepted by the spirits, then perform the “Rayamiento”, which consists of a initiation ceremony, where the person assumes full responsibility for all spiritual assignments.
Tumblr media
El Palo becomes a Nguey (newly initiated priest), which represents an Iyago in Santeria. Subsequently, it must be initiated by a godfather or godmother in a ceremony similar to that in Santeria, it is secret and the rules are somewhat strict for the initiates, homosexuality is not allowed and when this inclination is discovered it is rejected throughout the Palo Mayombe community.
The house of a palero is called munanso or house, it can only be opened by the palero or palera himself. Each Palera tradition is carried out orally, its priests are in charge of transmitting the traditions to the initiated in this way, the idea is to preserve the secrets of the Palo Mayombe through the fidelity of the person, the secrets of this religious current They are not easily available in books or texts, they are in the mind and knowledge of each Palero. (See article Olodumare)
History.
The history of Palo mayombe dates back to the region of Cameroon, before the migration of the Bantu to the south and settling in Angola, Congo and Cabinda. From there came a large number of slaves who with them also came the Palo Monte belief, the ceremonies and songs used by the slaves reached the Island of Cuba and began to be combined with the Spanish language, the same influence fell on other regions. from Central America and the Caribbean. Towards the 20th century, Palo mayombe began to proliferate and spread in Cuban communities settled in countries such as Venezuela, the United States, Haiti and the Dominican Republic, where in some countries the tradition remains intact, just as it develops in Africa.
Currently the Palo Mayombe culture is very large, especially in the Cuban regions of Santiago, Matanzas and Pinar del Rio, most of the practitioners are black, who in turn are followers of Catholicism. (See article African rites).
Vista como religión
Palo mayombe, also known as Palo, is considered a religion that mixes the shamanic current and elements of spiritualism, black magic and Catholicism, the main root arises from the Congo region that later expanded to other regions of the African continent and with the arrival of slaves to America, it spread throughout almost all of Latin America.
On this continent, the Palera religion began to take its first steps in regions where African tribes were beginning to establish themselves, these tribes were Mondongo, Bisongo, Timbiseros and Mandingas, who maintained their tradition of Bantu culture, in this way it took shape until that the three most important currents were born and then dispersed throughout the island.
Its strength consists of possessing and using the spiritual criteria of other religions, the mixture of African and European spiritual concepts allowed it to become a strong spiritual current, each one (Mayombe, Criyumba and Kimbiza) establishes a series of criteria that each palero must comply to the letter, however there are communal elements among them that allow the implementation of the Palo Mayombe criteria.
THERE ARE MORE THAN 50 Remaining Pages of this very important Historical document on Palo Mayombe - so if you click the title you can read the entire piece. Use Google Translate to make it your language in one click.
