A Surprising Crush: Brian Gleeson in Phantom Thread
Hey Tumblr fam! Just finished watching Phantom Thread and, whoa, what a ride! Can we just take a moment to appreciate every detail of that masterpiece? 🎥✨ But let's talk about a particular moment that caught me off guard – when Reynolds got sick and they brought in Dr. Robert Hardy.
Now, maybe it's just me, but does anyone else think he looked oddly familiar? 🤔 And dare I say… attractive? Yep, I totally went there. But here's the kicker: turns out, Dr. Hardy is played by none other than Brian Gleeson! 🤯
Hold up, rewind. Brian Gleeson? The same guy who had me in stitches as Frank in "Frank of Ireland"? I couldn't believe it! Seeing him all clean-shaven and serious in Phantom Thread was a total game-changer. Talk about a versatile actor, am I right? 🙌
But let's get real for a sec – can we just appreciate how good he looked in that role? Like, really good. It's like seeing him in a whole new light! Props to the makeup and costume team for that transformation.
So, confession time: despite knowing it's Brian Gleeson, I couldn't shake off the feeling of finding Dr. Hardy oddly attractive. And hey, I'm not the only one, right? Let me know if anyone else had a similar revelation! 😅
Have you ever had a similar experience with an actor playing a completely different role? Share your thoughts! 💭

Review : Logan Lucky (2017)
Tumblr media
There’s only one thing better than a countrified heist movie done in the style of Steven Soderbergh, and that’s a countrified heist movie directed by Steven Sodergergh.  While the trailers for this movie made it seem slightly intriguing and eventually worth seeing, I am now realizing that I made a huge mistake not seeing Logan Lucky in the theaters.
As previously mentioned, this film is a heist movie set in West Virginia and Charlotte, North Carolina.  The Logan brothers (Channing Tatum and Adam Driver), tired of the hard luck that seems to follow their family, decide to take advantage of an opportunity at the Charlotte Motor Speedway to make off with all of the money, stored in an underground vault fed by a system of pneumatic tubes.  With the help of their sister Mellie (Riley Keough), Joe Bang (Daniel Craig) and the Bang Brothers (Brian Gleeson and Jack Quaid), the hilarious hi-jinx ensue, and everyone attempts to survive the fallout.
Soderbergh is a master craftsman, and Logan Lucky is his equivalent to ‘whistling while he works’.  This film could easily have the humor dissected from it and probably stand up as a low-budget suspense thriller in its own right, but setting it in West Virginia provides a wonderfully colorful palette of personalities to explore (shout out to the Jesco White shout out during one of the jail scenes... well played, Soderbergh).  All of the visual earmarks are there, but they are forced to stand toe to toe with so many levels of funny (from low-key humor to balls out hilarity) that the film feels like an amusement park ride.  The final third of the film switches to a tense investigation film, but it never loses its heart, even during the serious moments.  When the string is eventually pulled, the culminating events are satisfying to the highest degree.
The attention shown to the importance of family is also one of the standout elements of the film.  The Logan family, as down on their luck as they may be, never wallow in their situation, always remaining as upbeat and optimistic as possible.  The Bang brothers (especially the younger two) are extremely content with their lot in life, drifting from adventure to adventure like leaves in the wind.  Even Jimmy’s family issues pale in comparison to the love for his daughter and his efforts to make sure he is involved in her life, despite his job issues and mischievous tendencies.
The niche that Channing Tatum is carving as a handsome leading man with charisma and comedy timing to spare is a wonderful one.  Adam Driver shows performance levels that I was unaware he had, hitting every weird beat possible without coming off as a cartoon character.  Farrah Mackenzie is wonderfully engaging as Sadie Logan, the daughter of Jimmy.  Katie Holmes is always a pleasure to see on screen, playing slightly against type to wonderful effect.  Words cannot describe how amazingly entertaining Daniel Craig is in this film... if for no other reason, his performance makes this movie worth seeing.  Riley Keough draws the slow-burn card this go-round, slowly unveiling layers to her character that keep leading the viewer deeper down the rabbit hole.  Guest appearances by Dwight Yoakam, Seth McFarlane, Sebastian Stan, Hilary Swank, Macon Blair, and self-appearances by LeAnn Rimes, Jesco White, Jeff Gordon, Darrell Waltrip and Mike Joy add depth to the rich character tapestry and world of the film.
Word around the critic’s circles is that Logan Lucky was the must-see film of 2017 that many did not see. While the movie is highly entertaining, I’d still have to give The Florida Project the title of most slept-on film of 2017.  That being said, if you’ve got an Amazon Prime account or a few bucks to spare, Logan Lucky is worth your time (and will do your funny bone some good).

Logan Lucky (2017) Review!!!
‘Logan Lucky’ is a very entertaining heist adventure, with sharp visuals, great characters and a quirky and off-kilter sense of humor, this one is easily one of my favorite films of the year. #AdamDriver, #BrianGleeson, #ChanningTatum, #DanielCraig, #DwightYoakam, #HilarySwank, #JackQuaid, #KatherineWaterston, #KatieHolmes, #LoganLucky, #RileyKeough, #SebastianStan, #SethMcFarlane, #SethMcFarlene
Synopsis – Two brothers attempt to pull off a heist during a NASCAR race in North Carolina.
My Take – I have special kind of admiration for filmmaker Steven Soderbergh as his 2001 film, Ocean’s Eleven, a remake of the 1960 heist caper, was the first the adult oriented film I saw on the big screen. With films like Erin Brockovich, Traffic, Magic Mike, Contagion & the Ocean’s Trilogyunder his…

Review : mother! (2017)
Tumblr media
Another triumph for Darren Aronofsky.  He exists in the rarified air of modern day directors such as Tarantino, P.T. Anderson, Nolan, Fincher and so on.  mother! is further proof that Aronofsky is a master of turning high-concept into visually stunning and highly relatable.
Jennifer Lawrence carries the weight in a star-studded cast that supports her brilliantly in ensemble form.  Javier Bardem plays the antagonist in a payoff so beautiful that it deserves being experienced rather than spoiled via deep analysis.  Their chemistry and pressure builds throughout the film in a way that is wonderfully tense... you know who you want to connect with emotionally, but nobody is truly portrayed as right or wrong.
The weight of the world is conveyed brilliantly by the aforementioned ensemble cast that eventually devolves into a terrifying sea of humanity.  Michelle Pfeiffer and Ed Harris bring in new sets of ideals and observations, eventually spilling into a conflict when the sons (real life brothers Brian and Domhnall Gleeson) raise the stakes, and death imposes itself into the home.  After a revelation of love and the hope of new birth, things completely spiral out of control, resulting in a uniquely satisfying and intriguing conclusion.
Many have picked up on the obvious connection to religion and biblical tales, but in my opinion, that was not Aronofsky’s main goal.  My takeaway was that mother! was intended to be a reflection on unconditional love, empathy and the way that the world imposes its weight on our realities.  Many storytelling archetypes and tropes exist within the framework of the story, including (but not limited to) religious ones.
If mother! is any indication of Darren Aronofsky’s career trajectory, I believe that all of us have truly compelling and thought provoking work to look forward to.

It’s been an uncharacteristically long wait for the next Steven Soderbergh movie. The director delivered almost two movies a year in the first decade of the 2000s, but after his 2013 twosome Side Effects and Behind the Candelabra, Soderbergh took a hiatus from feature filmmaking. Fortunately, we had his excellent Cinemax series The Knick to tide us over and now the wait is over with Logan Lucky.…

For the most part I stay busy trying to keep up with the nearly 500 scripted TV shows premiering every year (saints preserve us …) but occasionally a movie grabs my attention; Logan Lucky is such a one. I’m a big Steven Soderbergh fan, not just because of what he’s done in the film world, but his contribution to TV as well (The Knick, RIP). Yet as a southerner, I’m always a little wary about…
