- Dadsona and him kisses once or twice in the museum or bookstore

- Dadsona cried during Les Miserable and Hugo comforted his ugly crying mess

- Hugo often recommends Dadsona some books whenever they're just alone or a day before a date

- Dadsona was there to help him through every step of him and Mary's divorce and the three all remained pretty good friends after the finalization

- Due to the obvious stuff, Joseph had a while to come out of his divorce and new relationship, but Dadsona was there to help him through it yet again and that alone gave Joseph a lot of courage to hold his hand after every sermon

- Whenever the church gets a homophobic/transphobic/biphobic/panphobic/acephobic person or rumor Joseph and Dadsona will go out of their way being cute with each other and loving to their kids

- I like to think after the divorce Dadsona helped Mary find a wonderful person

- Joseph kisses Dadsona's temples and the center of his palms while Dadsona kisses the bridge of his nose and behind his shoulder and/or his tattoo area whenever they don't kiss on the lips

- Whenever Dadsona is sad or lonely they all cuddle him with each bringing stuff to make him feel better, examples being cookies from Joseph and Damien's warmed coat etc.

This December, Bergen County natives The Front Bottoms will be throwing their annual ‘Champagne Jam’ in Asbury Park’s historic Convention Hall for the fifth year in a row after a successful co-headlining tour with beloved indie band Manchester Orchestra. The Front Bottoms are a band that just won’t stop from their humble D.I.Y. beginning on Bar/None Records to their cult-icon status on Fueled By Ramen. Their last major release was the Ann EP, the second in their grandmother series, which sparked a tour where they would play both the EP and Going Greyfront-to-back.

This tour, they’re taking things even looser with an entire bar setup on stage and more crowd interaction than thought possible for a band that signed to a major label. I got the chance to catch up with lead singer Brian Sella and talk about new beginnings, the artistic process and what home means to him.

How are you liking tour so far?

So far, so good, you know? All the shows so far have been pretty fantastic, so it’s been a nice feeling…To be able to come out here and, you know, play the music, and it’s like, “Oh, wow, people are rockin’, rollin’ and having a good time.” So, it’s really incredible.

You guys are originally from New Jersey. I am too, so I know it must be nice to get away from it for a bit, right?

[Laughs] Yeah you know it. Jersey is a nice place to come home to. A nice place to leave, a nice place to come home to.

Lots of great bands and musicians are from New Jersey, like Bruce Springsteen, Frank Sinatra, Whitney Houston, My Chemical Romance and The Misfits. What do you think it is about New Jersey that inspires great art?

Well, really, I’m not sure. I think it’s probably the tone or the atmosphere of it all. It’s just kind of, like, you could live close to Manhattan, but you don’t live in the city. You live close to Philadelphia, but you’re not from Pennsylvania. You could go to the beach, it’s on the coastline. You could also shoot up to Boston. I think the fact that there’s access to so many different styles makes its own style. I think that’s kind of why so many people from Jersey end up being total freakin’ nutjobs. [Laughs] Just kidding.

Your music seems to be heading towards a more polished, pop sound with each release. Was this the goal of your art from the beginning, but you now have the skills and label power to complete it?

I think the goal from the beginning was to just play shows. My life for the past eight to 10 years has been going on tour and playing shows every single day for months at a time, going to a different city and playing in front of different people. And the recording process for me? That lasts, like, two weeks. That’s such a quick blip in terms of the artistic experience. So I would never say that that was a goal to make the recording sounds the way that they sound. It was just part of the discovery of the art. I was just trying my best, and when all of a sudden you’re in a room with amazing equipment, and your friends are there and all the time it’s like, “Let’s try to make this sound a little bit better.”

But really the process for me is just one of discovery. It’s not like a projected path, I’m not thinking, “Oh, when I was playing a basement in New Jersey,” or “Oh, I wish this sounded like a Katy Perry song.” Each day happens and it unfolds and you roll with the punches. I think the most important thing is hindsight and looking back and saying, “Okay, that happened. So what did I like? What don’t I like? What do I want to change?” And really every single step and every single part of the process is you just figuring it out.

So, I don’t know the next album in terms of the discovery of myself through the art. It might be a country album or a D.I.Y.-sorta basement style recording. I can just kind of discover [myself] through the music and everybody can listen to it.

To answer your question, it definitely wasn’t a plan to have things turn out this way. I feel like that’s why things happened so positively; because it was never a plan. Everything was awesome and any little experience or accomplishment was the biggest thing that had ever happened to us, even if it was just a tiny, little thing. We just kinda roll with the punches all the way through. I think it would be unfair to give myself the credit of saying this was all a plan.

You kind of built your way up from the bottom — you played D.I.Y. shows and you and the audience were on a peer level where you could have a beer with all eight members of your early shows. Now, you’re selling out large venues and people are tattooing your face on their body. How does it feel like to have gained a cult following?

[Laughs] It’s strange, it’s a strange world. I think that’s part of the whole thing that we were saying — there was no plan, you kinda let the audience decide the plan. That’s why I always take requests on stage, because I’m not up here for myself, I’m not up here for my plan. This is whatever people want.

Like, back in the day, when there would be 10 people at the show, I could drink a beer with every single one of these people and a lot of these people got my face tattooed on them. It’s crazy, it’s a weird experience. I’m still so fucking lucky and I just try and stay naive about the whole thing and just excited about every little step.

I think that’s the best way to do it.

I think so. You can’t plan anything, really, and it’s a bummer, but sometimes it works out. In this particular situation it worked out. It was years of time that I think people would consider it not working out. The six or seven years of time where there was only 10 people coming to the shows. And my family was like, “Okay, what are you doing? You’re still living in the van with Mat…” But for me, I was so happy and so pumped, this was amazing.

So, I think that naiveté of it all was very important. If I had listened to anybody else talk, I wouldn’t be where I am now. You gotta stay positive and do what you want to do. I know it’s hard to be like, “Oh, just stay positive and everything will work out,” but really that’s kinda what happened. Me and Mat just stayed positive and remembered that we were having fun, and how lucky we were to not have to go work at a landscaping job or at a grocery store or something like that. That was the best feeling in the fucking world. You know, like with your writing it’s the same thing, you write articles and people read them. That’s a form of art. That’s incredible.

Thanks. Yeah, it’s nice for people to see what you produce.

Exactly! One time this girl was like, “I want to go around the country and read my poetry to people.” And in a very negative way I was like, “That doesn’t exist, that’s not a real thing.” And she said, “That’s what you do.” And it really hit me like, “Oh my gosh, that is what I do.” And it was like this crazy awakening of, yeah, I shouldn’t be telling people, “That doesn’t exist, that doesn’t happen,” because that’s what everybody was saying to me when I was trying to “read my poetry” around the country.

Now that you’ve been signed to Fueled By Ramen, you guys have been able to add more touring members and build a more elaborate stage setup. You, Mat and Tom are familiar faces on tour, but Jennifer, Roshan and Eric are now a part of the ensemble. What made you choose them?

Basically, Mat. First of all, the people in the band: Roshan, Eric and Jen, are unbelievable musicians. They’re fantastic. They are actual musicians. They are the reason it sounds incredible on stage.

Oh, I agree, it sounds great.

Thank you very much, that means a lot. It’s an experiment, like I was sayin’, we’re trying to figure it out. It’s all over the place, everyone has their style and we’re just trying to put on a good performance.

But basically, Rosh[an] is in a bunch of bands, he played keyboard in a band Mat was good friends with. Mat’s girlfriend was somehow involved. I met Ro[shan] at a bar one night, he was playing bass, and he had come highly recommended from Mat. And then Jen was in a band called River City Extension that we have quite a history with. We’ve known those guys a really long time, and I really wanted a violin player, I thought that would add a lot. And then Eric, we met at the studio. He was a studio rat, just always there, and I was making demos and stuff with him and it turns out he’s really incredible at bass. So we had him play bass and moved Tom over to electric guitar. And he loves to play electric guitar, so he was all about that.

And that’s always how it all comes together. Same with how I met Tom. I met Tom through [former guitarist] Ciaran, eight years ago. He just showed up at my house and Ciaran was like, “This guy plays bass, he’s amazing,” and we heard him play bass and we told him, “Dude, you should be in the band!”. That’s always the way that it’s been. We always try to keep it loosey goosey like that.

Sounds like a good deal. By the way, ‘Champagne Jam’ is taking place where you live: Asbury Park, one of many coastal New Jersey beach towns [like where I’m from]. In your latest single “End of Summer,” and also “Vacation Town” off of Going Grey, you capture the melancholy that comes with the passing of another season. Was that inspired by Asbury [Park]?

Absolutely inspired by Asbury Park. My girlfriend and I, we’re living there right now, so it’s definitely full circle. I wrote a lot of those songs when I was living there. That vibe of the summer time going into the winter time, it is definitely an energy that inspired those songs, absolutely.

Do you feel like that sort of parallels your life? Like you’re entering a new season, or new chapter?

Everything is very personal with my art, even if it’s about somebody else. I’m always drawing from my little perspective in there, especially as a songwriter, I gotta do that. I do feel like maybe it is a new chapter. Like I was saying, I’ve been on tour for fuckin’ nine years. Not consistently, but I’ve been hustling for nine years and it’s been a fucking grind for sure. And we have this tour, we do the ‘Champagne Jam’ and then in the new year we’re planning to just write a lot. I’m going to try to write as much as I can.

So I do think that it’s kind of like a chapter sort of ending and also sort of starting again. You need that refresher for art. You need to go get new inspiration. That’s where I’m at. I’m taking it year-to-year in Asbury, and you know, I like it. You’re always looking for the next thing and this is the first time in my life that I’m like, “Okay, I guess I can just chill”.

Hello! My daughter Amanda and I are moving across town to a Cul-de-sac... Why? I genuinely have no idea, seems like a reasonable thing to do, I suppose. The best part though - The area's full of some pretty interesting folks. There's a handsome blonde youth minister who's married to a bitter drunk named Mary, they have a handful of children and one they always seem to lose for some reason. Damien Bloodmarch is a gorgeous goth living in a beautifully purple home with his rebelious son Lucien (the boy has quite a passion for My Chemical Romance, I hear). Across the way is the ever competitive Brian Harding who is always attempting to one-up the other Dads in the area, and his little daughter Daisy. Then there's Mat Sella, a cool dude who runs the local coffee shop. He's something of a hipster but don't hold that against him, he's a great dad to his daughter Carmensita and pretty darn creative to boot. Craig Cahn might sound a little familiar... That's right! We went to college with him and holy cow has he changed a lot! Not to mention raising three amazing little ones since his recent divorce. Hugo Vega lives nearby with his angsty teenage son Ernest, Amanda's a little uncomfortable with us socializing with her teacher but eh, she'll live. I love a well read man, don't you? Last but not least is the mysterious and strangely intriguing loner Robert Small who... as far as we know isn't actually a real Dad, but who knows, he's more likely to change the subject than answer a genuine question honestly. So join us as we explore the ins and outs of raising a teenage daughter by ourselves, attempting to socialize around the neighborhood, make a few new friends, and maybe.. just maybe... meet someone genuinely special..

Chapter 2: Vanilla

Dean Vásquez needs a new job, and he needs one quick!

“So what are you doing for Christmas?”

Robert rolled his eyes so hard I wondered whether he could be watching the road like that. I was still getting used to his aversion to small talk. Given the tightness in his brow, I was surprised he responded at all. “Gonna go down to Brooklyn and see if Val doesn’t kick me to the curb.”

I couldn’t help but smile a little. Honestly, I was proud of him. He was really starting to make amends with his daughter. It was obviously really hard work -there was no quick fix for years of estrangement, no easy forgiveness for a bad childhood- but that was only more admirable. He was trying when he could more easily give up. I didn’t say anything, though. He wouldn’t want me to comment. I just hoped he knew I was happy for both of them.

“Well? What about you?”

“Amanda’s coming home. She and her girlfriend and her girlfriend’s son will be staying with us until they go back to school.”

“Lots of company.”

“Yeah. I’m happy to have them over.” Basically all my spending money in those 4 months 7 days 5 hours 22 minutes on presents for Amanda.

I felt a deep pit in my stomach, a hollowness I hadn’t felt since I left Amanda in Chicago. It hit me that I didn’t currently have a job, only an interview scheduled. I’d need to be well prepared for that, and for the possibilty that it won’t go well and I’ll be out of a job entirely. But I didn’t want to think about that on an otherwise happy day. I just set a reminder to make a few phone calls next week -no one was going to answer me outside of business hours, anyway.

Robert jerked us into the cul-de-sac, and I took a moment to admire the festive atmosphere of our little community. Four of the houses were brightly decorated for Christmas, a rainbow of lights and cardboard cutouts of classic characters and Joseph’s endearingly gaudy nativity set. But the Christiansen Christmas set went beyond symbols of the Lord and Savior. “I like the way the lights look on the house,” Joseph explained, stringing them up in late November.

Brian’s decorations were probably the second most extravagent, and it made me bristle. Our own house paled in comparison, despite my best efforts. Mat’s house was decorated, but not lit up in the Sellas’ absence. Hugo’s house was minimally decorated and done in such a way that a rebellious teenager couldn’t sabotage. I remembered what Mat had said at that first barbecue -I, too, do not envy Hugo.

Damien’s gothic abode was frankly adorable with twinkling little lights glittering on the blackness of the house.

Smashley was taking the girls for Christmas because Craig was Jewish and Christmas really wasn’t anything to him, so it made sense. His house wasn’t decorated but there were a couple of snowmen in the yard. Robert, unsurprisingly, hadn’t decorated for Christmas, though he had admitted at some point that Christmas was his favorite holiday. And I was glad he was taking the opportunity for a family-centric holiday to spend time with Val.

Robert pulled into his driveway and hopped out before I had the chance to thank him again. Rather than going inside, he started walking into town, clearly not dressed for the weather but knowing full well he’d be spending half the night at Jim and Kim’s anyway. Mary would be waiting for him there.

I didn’t head right home myself, knowing there wasn’t enough time to cook before Amanda and Morgan and Morgan’s-son-that-I-forgot-the-name-of arrived. Amanda would probably appreciate the opportunity for all of us to cook together to celebrate her return. I’d thought about throwing a welcome home party for her and inviting everyone, but then Joseph organized a Christmas Eve party and I didn’t have it in me for that many festivities in one week. We’d settle for lots of hugs and destroyng the kitchen when she got home.

I headed to Mat’s house. I was fern-sitting while he was away. The switch to his outside decorations were right next to his front door, and I flicked them on on the way out. I stepped off his porch to admire what was aboslutely my own handiwork because I was the one who flipped the switch… Okay, it was partially my work, though, at least.

I got home and queued up a couple of episodes of LHPIRGT. They had finally put it on Netflix, which had prompted me to finally get Netflix. I’d spent all last night cleaning up and getting the house ready for my daughter and guests. I did a little last minute spot-cleaning, though, and before I knew it there were headlights in the driveway.

I jumped slightly. The clock on the stove said 6:30, but stove clocks were notorious for being wrong on a whim. If it was kind enough to be right, that meant they were early. I scurried over to the front door and gripped the doorknob, taking a moment to collect myself before making my dramatic greeting.

“Welcome home, Amanda!” I shouted, not checking who it actually was.

“Oh, thank you!” Craig answrered, laughing.

My arms dropped to my side, a small pout coming to my lips. “Dammit, I don’t know if I have another over-the-top welcome in me! You used it all up.” I kissed him and let him in, feigning reluctance. “How was New York?”

“Oh, good. I only stayed a couple of hours but the twins are super excited. Smashley promised them they’d do a lot of fun things while they were there.” He laughed again. “River could take it or leave it.”

I smiled and plopped down on the couch, checking my phone for the time, a little distracted from what he was saying. “How long are they staying?” It was an easy enough question to come up with without needing to be actively invested in the conversation. The pause told me he had caught on, but continued on easily.

“They’re staying for a week. From what I’ve heard they’ve got a lot to fit in to that time.” He laid his head on my shoulder. “You have such pointy shoulders.”

I laughed softly, a little more aware of the present moment but still with Amanda’s pending arrival buzzing in the back of my skull. “And yet you don’t move.” I check the time once more. 6:36. “Twenty-four minutes,” I say definitively, and tuck my phone back in my pocket. “Remember what you promised?”

“Hm?”

“About this week without the girls.”

“Oh. Yeah. That I’m taking that time to relax.” I could feel him tense against me.

“Y’lnow, you’re welcome to stay here. Trust me, if anyone can model effectively doing nothing, it’s me and Amanda.”

“I might have to take you up on that, bro.”

I kissed his head, but his hair tickled my lips. “Amanda and Morgan are almost here.”

“Morgan has a baby, right?”

“Yeah, but for the life of me I can’t remember his name. They’re gonna get here and I’m just gonna have to hope they bring up his name right away because it’ll just be embarrassing to admit I don’t remember.”

“Or I could just ask.”

I paused, something clicking. “Dammit.”

He laughed and hopped up. “Am I sticking around?”

I nodded, yawning and stretching. “Stay the night?”

Craig bent down, hands coming down on either side of my hips, palms flat on the cushions. He kissed me softly. “I’m just gonna go grab some pajamas.”

“You don’t have to.” I didn’t want him to leave, nor did I want him to wear pajamas to bed. But my room was drafty as hell, and as good as those jeans looked on him, they wouldn’t be comfortable to sleep in. “Okay, go on.” I checked the time again. “Twenty minutes. You’ll need to be back for their arrival. Someone will need to pump me up for another dramatic greeting, and it’s only fair.”

He patted my knee and headed back out into the cold. And, however briefly, I was left alone with my thoughts.

I don’t have a job. If that interview doesn’t go well then I’ll be left unemployed. Mortgage, car insurance, health insurance, Amanda’s college expenses… I need to make sure my daughter can get through college without having to worry about money. I promised we would make it work. Maybe this is an opportunity. Maybe it’s not too late to find a job that I’m good at and pays a lot and that I actually enjoy. God damn it I hate paperwork. I have lots of friends. Maybe they can help me find a new job. But do I really want to have to rely on someone else to give me a job? What kind of lesson would that be teaching Amanda?

“Dean?”

My thoughts had gone on like that for some time. I looked up to find Craig crouched in front of me, a folded up pair of pajama pants sandwiched between his hand and knee. I could feel small vibrations in my skin. Craig’s eyes were focused with worry.

“Are you alright, bro?”

“Yeah, I’m fine,” I answered without thinking.

Rightfully, he didn’t seem to believe me. He smiled, and tried to cheer me up. “Amanda should be here soon. You haven’t seen her since Auguest.”

I nodded, smiling as the truth of it sunk in. 6:58. Craig sat down next to me and this time I laid my head on his shoulder.

Seven o’clock came and went. My chest tighetened more and more with every minute that passed, and at 7:30 I decided I needed to call her. I tried pacing around while I waited for an answer, but Craig pulled me back down, rubbing my arm.

Two rings.

Three.

Finally, someone picked up.

“Hey, Pops!”

Relief washed over me. “Amanda. Are you alright? You almost home?”

“Oh, yeah, we’re fine. We’re, um…” There was some incoherent mumbling. “We’re about three hours away.”

My heart sank, but not as deeply as before. “Why, what happened? Weren’t you supposed to be here at seven?”

There was a pause, and during that pause I realized how agitated I sounded. But she was answering before I could apologize for my tone. “Morgan’s kid was up really late last night, so we needed to let him sleep a little longer. I meant to call to let you know but things just… happened. And I just forgot. Sorry.”

I stammered out an apology. “No, no, I’m sorry. It’s fine. I can’t wait to see you. I’ll see you when you get here, okay?”

“Okay. Love you, Pops.”

“I love you too, Panda.”

I waited for her to hang up and sunk back into the couch and my boyfriend. “They’re still three hours away.”

I felt Craig nod against the top of my head, one hand rubbing my arm still. He was silent for a moment, but then stood up, slowly, giving me the chance to move off of him rather than fall onto the seat. “Come on, get your coat on.”

“Huh? Where are we going?”

“Hungry?”

My stomach growled as if to speak over me. “Uh, yeah, kind of.”

He was already getting his own coat on. “We’re going out. To eat. Come on.”

I stood and got my coat on.

We didn’t end up anywhere too fancy. It was probably a step up from the nearest drive-thru. But damn, I could get pizza and ice cream on the same plate. Meatball and vanilla should never be combined but it was exactly what I needed.

Craig had ordered a salad but didn’t really do more than pick at it. “Better?”

I nodded, letting out a slight moan at the deliciousness of the ice cream. He smiled and pushed the lightly oiled lettuce around on his paper plate. “You’re hating this, aren’t you?”

“Hm?”

“The food. You haven’t had a bite of that salad.”

“Oh. No, it’s fine. I’m just not hungry, I guess. I ate a bit in New York.”

I nodded, somewhat hesitant but accepting his response.

When it came time to pay, my leg started shaking. Normally we’d split the bill, or Craig would insist on paying and I’d try to argue for an even split, but tonight I wasn’t so certain I could hold up my end. Which made me feel like shit because he had only gotten a salad that he hadn’t eaten and wasn’t even trying to take home, while I had stuffed myself on pure decadence. I could only watch as Craig tucked his credit card in with the bill and indicated a generous tip. I realized he wasn’t expecting me to try to split it. He didn’t seem to want me to. But I felt like I should’ve tried, at least.

The waitress winked at him and went to ring the bill up. Craig crossed his arms on the table and smiled comfortably at me. “Anything else you want to do while we wait for them?”

I shook my head a little.

“Going home, then?”

I nodded. I thought I might need to be alone tonight to figure things out. But our eyes met and I melted. I didn’t know whether I could get through this without him, but I knew I didn’t want to.

Dream Daddy High School/College AU

WRITERS NOTE: I can’t actually write and it’s 3 AM, so most of the ideas are fairly vague and are not very elaborate. Honestly, I can’t really remember any smaller details about each of the dad’s.

Please tell me if something is getting to OC and feel free to send me any ideas and I might make a master post if this gains any interest (which I doubt, I just need to get this written down before I forget)

Craig Cahn - a literal human trash bag (filled with trash, he is not trash), surprisingly okay-ish grades, fantastic procrastinator, lethargic and indecisive AF, really good at beer pong, eats in class, great actor, gets in trouble for using slang in his essays and being late for class every day

Hugo Vega - on the wrestling team, an Advanced Placement student, fond of wine (regardless of his age), surprisingly strong, grew out of his childhood lactose intolerance (I did, it was really nice), works at a library or bookstore but ends up hiding in the back to read (I did this), gets in trouble for calling out the staff and students when they get facts wrong

Damien Bloodmarch - (I don't know when he transitioned, but I’ll use he/him) a classy goth, but he’s still a poor student (I can relate to this on a personal level), closeted anime fan, is/was a pescetarian in HS before becoming a full fledged vegetarian, has really nice cursive (probably uses a fountain pen), is tired of people calling his cloak a cape, gets in trouble for telling people off who call him Emo (also me)

Mat Sella - a music/band student (obviously), probs a stoner, but he like, doesn't suck? (you know the type, I hope), barista at the local coffee shop but it’s not local because he doesn't want to see his classmates, hates people touching his instruments (I feel you), his headphones/earbuds are practically grafted to him, gets in trouble for smuggling cats into the dorms/classes and for listing to music, singing, or humming in class

Brian Harding - an amazing cook, a shop kid, great for camping trips, super competitive (obviously), great at anything involving cards (ex. poker, and go fish), part of the gardening club, a handy man, gets in trouble for unknowingly provoking other kids and staff

Robert Small - the delinquent, is street smart, junior con man, all his papers are about cryptids, fond of whiskey (regardless of his age), will protect his leather jacket with his life, will deny that he wears eyeliner (based off of angsty teen Dan Avidan from Game Grumps, his voice actor), the best liar, gets in trouble for his jokes, bringing knives to school and getting into fights when people call him short/small (I HC that he’s the shortest dad, I think I saw it somewhere)

Joseph Christiansen- the President of the Bible study club every Thursday, is/was a Scout, the top student in Baking 101, charismatic AF, very honest, though a little overbearing, rides his skateboard to school/class, brings baked goods to school to give out, gets in trouble for causing drama because he critiqued their outfit or he was too blunt

Got some requests for Dream Daddy! Well, quite a few actually. Dream Daddy Headcanons: Parents Edition

Because I was randomly thinking about it! Includes what the daddys’ parents think of your Dadsona. Yay :D

Joseph: Jacob and Rachel Christiansen were major Stepford Smilers, and are the reason Joseph knows how to pretend to be happy so well. They never really cared for Mary, who’s known Joseph since they were in high school, because Joseph went through a major rebellious phase and his parents blame her for most of it (even though he would have without her; I could write a whole essay about what I think Joseph was like before he found Jesus). Joseph says he inherited his yacht from his dad, so Jacob probably died before he and Joseph could make amends. Rachel wants to be closer to Joseph, but he’s not sure about that because she’s so judgemental about his life and choices. If you picked Joseph, his marriage ends up falling apart for good, and you meet Rachel. She’s got very mixed feelings about you. On the one hand, you broke up her son’s marriage and she’s all about keeping up appearances. On the other, you seem way more stable than Mary, and she’s never really seen Joseph...at ease. She’ll decide to give you a chance.

Robert: Daniel and Sophia Small are two blue-collar Brooklyn folks, and from them is where Robert inherited both his toughness and his sensitivity. Daniel was a mechanic, a large and scary-looking guy who was mixed white and Seneca, and truly a man’s man. He taught Robert to whittle, and took him camping every summer. He also cried when they killed Bambi’s mom. Sophia was a hard-boiled Italian Catholic that took no guff and didn’t hesitate to smack Robert the first time she caught him smoking when he was fourteen. She also had a soft spot for stray cats and often left out food for them. They weren’t generally outwardly affectionate people, but they loved deeply. Robert looks at their example and wonders why he screwed up so badly with his own family, and it honestly makes him feel a bit like a huge ass. Sophia died a while before Marilyn did, and Daniel has just recently moved on, as mentioned by Robert. If you picked Robert, Daniel will come visit at some point, which stirs up some accidental tension between him and Robert when Daniel accidentally brings up what cause Robert and Val’s estrangement (that being Robert not being the best dad), which smarts extra hard given how much Robert has been trying to fix things with Val. It’s up to the player to get them to reconcile, after which Daniel will thank you for helping his son, something Daniel himself could never seem to do.

Craig: Matthew and Mina Cahn are still hopelessly convinced Craig is straight, and after the break-up with Smashley, they’re constantly trying to get him back in the dating game. They’re very indulgent grandparents, and spoil their granddaughters rotten with affection and gifts. Not that they aren’t affectionate with Craig. They will pinch his cheeks and call him pet names from when he was three in front of his adult friends. They are also blissfully unaware of some of the shenanigans Craig pulled in college, because he’s a good boy and good boys don’t steal fish and keep illegal dogs. If you picked Craig, his parents will not realize at first that you’re together in that way and keep trying to push him, with poor Craig having no clue how to break it to them. It’s up to your dad to give him the confidence boost to finally stand up for himself. Matthew and Mina are shocked that Craig was bi and they never noticed. It’ll take some getting used to, but they’re not about to deny that you make Craig happy, and they’re all for things that make their little boy happy. If you show off how good you are with Craig’s kids, they’ll warm up to you even faster.

Brian: Steven and Nancy Harding are tubs of fun. They’re all about family, friends, and a good game of lawn darts. However, they’re also just as competitive as their son, possibly moreso since Brian at least seems to understand when the friendly competition stops being friendly. For Steve and Nan, it really is about being the best, and if you picked Brian, that includes their son’s love life. I have the theory that Brian was already married once, and things didn’t work out, so they’re not about to settle from Brian having anything less than a perfect partner. You spend a lot of time trying to win them over, only for them to passive aggressively point out how you could have done something better. There are no real options to please them. No matter what you do, they aren’t satisfied. The harder you try and the more dismissively they treat you, the madder Brian gets, until he finally lays into them about how they have no right to treat you that way, and they need to understand that yes, they can want what’s best for him, but he cares about you and they need to respect that and respect you. This makes them evaluate their lives a little, and they apologize to you.

Hugo: Hector and Maria Vega are parents with high expectations. Ever since Hugo was a kid, they’ve always been trying to push him to better himself. Unfortunately, that means finding fault in everything he does. Hector generally focuses on education and career. A middle and high school teacher? Couldn’t he have gotten his masters and taught college? He’d make better money that way. Maria was all about his family and his social life. All the people he even thinks about dating have some glaring flaw that makes Maria encourage him to keep looking. He could have done this, this, and this to make his previous marriage more stable. And don’t even get her started on that child of his (incidentally, Ernest can’t stand his grandparents either). All of it has left Hugo with major self-worth issues, especially when it comes to his hobbies. He’s so used to having everything he likes criticized that he’s reluctant to share it with anyone. If you picked Hugo, you and Ernest team up (and subsequently bond) to encourage Hugo to finally stand up to his parents. Because no one is allowed to make Ernest’s dad feel bad except Ernest!

Mat: Arthur and Gabrielle Sella are the exact opposite of their son in terms of personality. Both are second-generation Americans (Arthur’s family is from Honduras and Gabrielle’s is from Trinidad) and they are both exuberant, gregarious people that love throwing parties and having a good time. Mat loves them dearly, and they love him and have always been very supportive, but he can’t help but feel kind of...uncomfortable around them. They mean well, but they don’t always understand that Mat gets nervous in social situations, and sometimes they speak just a little too loudly for the poor guy. Really, they’re just typical extroverts, and Mat feels guilty that he doesn’t spend as much time with them as he ought to. If you picked Mat, his parents will instantly love you because that’s just how they roll, not to mention how much you helped Mat “come out of his shell”. You also get the opportunity to encourage them to dial back that “forcing Mat into socializing” thing, so they can have a much more easy-going relationship with him.

Damien/Mary: John and Carol Bloodmarch are what a lot of people (their children included) would describe as “boring”. They prefer “down to earth”. But the most honest way to describe them is “110% done”. While they’d be perfectly content to live their quiet, uneventful lives, that’s hard to do when you’ve raised the kids they did. A trans son with a passion for taxidermy and Victorian fashion? A party animal, probably-ace daughter who definitely has some form of depression that she hides behind a wine glass? They’ve both lived through it, and are just not fazed anymore. Unfortunately, Damien and Mary both have a tendency of reading their nonplussed attitudes as resentment, because honestly? They’re both mature enough to admit they weren’t always easy to raise. If you picked Damien, you find out that that isn’t the case at all however. John and Carol only want their children to be happy. They don’t mean to come off as aloof or uninterested, it’s just that their own parents were incredibly restrictive, and it’s affected them their entire lives. They’d never want to do that to their own children, and want them to be comfortable however they chose to be. They decide to make an effort to be more involved with their kids, and therefore more encouraging.

BONUS: When Robert’s dad comes to visit, he’s broken up with his new girlfriend. He ends up meeting Joseph’s widowed mother. They go out a few times, and decide they really like each other. Joseph and Robert both feel sick. Mary cackles in the background.

Here We Go Again chapter 8

Twas a week before Christmas, and all through the cul-de-sac, kids were off school and their parents tried to hit the sack. Maple Bay, Maine was sitting tight under a foot of snow and counting. Coincidentally, it was also the day that was supposed to be the last day of school before Christmas break, so the kids of the neighborhood were celebrating an extra day of break by building snowmen on the cul-de-sac itself. Lucien and Ernest had paired up with their respective fathers in building snow forts and had declared war against each other.

Thankfully, Amanda had gotten home from her finals a few days before the big storm hit and had instigated guerilla warfare against both parties and somehow roped Craig into it. Michael watched proudly as his girls and bros ran around throwing snowballs at unsuspecting victims. He was helping River build tiny snowmen. And by helping, he would help her make snowballs, stack them, and then River would knock them down.

Brian and his daughter, Daisy, eventually made their own snow fort (which was, of course, bigger than the other two). He threw bigger snowballs, too. Mat Sella brewed copious amounts of hot chocolate and handed out mugs to parents when they took breaks from their kids’ antics. Carmensita went and teamed up with Brian and Daisy. Joseph, Mary, and their kids built snowmen in their yard with somewhat terrifying faces. Robert wandered around sabotaging all the teams in what had become a four way war between the neighborhood.

Sometime in the early afternoon, Michael went back inside with River and lay down for a nap. He was pregnant, after all, and not generally up for constant activity the way his kids or bro were. He was just about to fall asleep when he felt… something like gas rumble in his stomach. His eyes flew open and his hands went to his abdomen. His babies were kicking. A lot. Another set of athletes, he thought with amusement.

He was suddenly wide awake and he rushed outside to see Craig messing around in the snow with the twins.

“Craig,” he shouted. Craig looked up and Michael gestured him over to the door. Craig walked over. He was about to ask what was wrong, but he saw Michael’s excited face. It was a good thing.

“What’s up, bro?” he asked.

Michael didn’t say anything but took his hand and placed it on his abdomen. The babies were still kicking around, thankfully. He watched Craig’s eyes widen and he knelt on the ground and pressed his ear to his bro’s stomach, closed his eyes, and listened. Michael looked down at his bro and cradled his head. Craig looked up and said, “That’s… incredible, bro. You’re incredible.”

Across the way, some of the other dads started looking over with a bit of concern at Craig kneeling in front of Michael. Hugo was the first on the scene.

“Umm… sorry to interrupt, don’t mean to be rude,” he said, “but is everything okay here?”

“Oh, yeah, we’re fine,” Michael said blushing. Totally from the cold, not from embarrassment. That would be silly. “Craig’s just, um, you know, feeling the babies kick.”

Hugo’s eyes widened. “The babies? You’re pregnant?”

Craig stood up and grinned, taking Michael’s hand in his. “Yeah, dude, we’re unexpectedly expecting.”

Hugo smiled and shook their hands. “Congratulations,” he said. “I mean it. I’m happy for both of you.”

Hugo wandered off and Michael looked up at Craig and smiled. “I guess we’re announcing it to the neighborhood, now?”

Craig kissed his forehead. “I mean, if you want to, bro,” he replied. “It’s your choice.”

“Michael kissed Craig’s freezing lips. “I absolutely want to announce to the whole world that I’m having our little hybrid bros.”

“I love you so much,” Craig said. “Our little hybrid bros are going to be beautiful.”

They made the rounds, telling each dad on the cul-de-sac the news. Damien actually jumped up and down excitedly and invited him over for tea one day soon to discuss the baby. Joseph and Mary congratulated them. Joseph offered cookies and Mary jokingly offered wine. Brian gave them both a hug and offered to build a crib for them if River wasn’t out of hers by the time the baby arrived. Robert was legitimately stunned but offered his (only a bit awkward) congratulations. Mat was the most surprised and offered them free Right Said Banana Bread once the coffee shop was back open.

They finally got back inside the house where it was warm and started a fire in the fireplace. Amanda and the girls were already in there continuing where they left off with Warehouse 13. She had gotten all the Cahns hooked on the show and it was something she was quite proud of. They sat in the warm comfort of their home, the tree festive and bright, drinking hot chocolate with marshmallows. Craig was constantly leaning down to place his ear to Michael’s stomach to see if the baby was active. Michael laughed at him occasionally, suggesting that he could let Craig know if the baby was moving around. Eventually they settled in, with Michael resting his head on Craig’s lap. *******************************************************************************

Christmas Eve was a day of celebration. At the Cahn household, it was a day of rest. Michael persuaded Craig to take it easy. All the shopping was done, the gifts were all wrapped and put away to mysteriously appear Christmas morning. Snow was still on the ground and the girls reveled playing snowy games with other kids in the cul-de-sac while Amanda took pictures.

It was admittedly strange to spend Christmas in a state where it wasn’t 70 or 80 degrees. And a white Christmas, at that. Of course, Michael’s family always insisted on going to church for the Christmas Eve service, something which Michael didn’t necessarily get anything out of, but he humored his family. This year, he was with Craig, who though friends with Joseph, didn’t feel particularly inclined to attend church, especially if the people there were going to give his family looks just because of his relationship with Michael.

I guess it’s time for some new Christmas traditions, Michael thought.

Eventually the kids came back inside to find Michael and Craig reading a recipe on making ginger bread. Fairly successfully, too.

“What’s all this, dad?” Briar said jumping up on a stool to look at what they were doing.

“My bro had this idea that we should make gingerbread houses,” Craig said, kneading the dough so the ingredients would be evenly spread throughout. “We’re almost done with the dough, you wanna help us with the icing?”

“Yes!” she cried.

“Can we eat the icing?” Hazel asked.

“Good job, Hazel,” Michael said, pointing a wooden spoon at her. “Asking important questions. Eventually. We need the icing to stick the walls and stuff together.”

Michael and the twins collectively hovered over one of those electric mixers. Between the three of them they managed to get enough of the mixture into the pastry bag. Then they settled on the couch to watch Nightmare Before Christmas while the dough cooled in the fridge. About halfway through the movie, the oven dinged signaling that the gingerbread was done. The five of them piled into the kitchen to assemble the houses. Amanda was put in charge of the icing since she was an artist and had a steady hand.

Unfortunately, they had to wait 8 hours to actually decorate the houses, which provided the perfect opportunity for trip to the grocery store candy decorations and a Christmas movie marathon, which also included various Christmas episodes from TV shows they liked.

Finally, the 8 hours were up and they were able to actually get to the fun part of the gingerbread house project. Hazel and Briar raced to the island and excitedly started putting candies on the gingerbread house. It was a magical moment. Hazel and Briar put gumdrops, red hots, peppermints, and caramel candy on the house. Briar took chocolate truffles and put them around the house like a fence. Amanda found a way to use leftover icing to glue candy canes outside the house to imitate trees. Craig covertly set up a camera to video tape the whole thing.

“Pops, dude, why aren’t you doing yours?” Amanda asked looking up and into the camera.

“We have two?” Michael asked.

“Yeah, we had enough dough so I made two to see if the kids could make a better house than the oldies,” she replied. River cooed and giggled, playing with Arnold. “And River.”

Sure enough, there was another gingerbread house behind the kids on the counter. There was also more than enough candy for two gingerbread houses. Craig arranged red and green gumdrops along the edges of the rooftop while Michael made cut York Peppermint patties into squares and made roof tiles out of them. He promptly ate the edges.

“Hey bro, leave some for me,” Craig said.

Michael didn’t say anything, but he put one of the edges in between his teeth and winked at him. Craig grinned and leaned in to kiss him full on the lips, snatching the candy out of his boyfriend’s mouth.

“Tasty,” he said.

“This is why I put that one behind us,” Amanda said loudly. “So they can at least be out of our sight while they’re being gross.”

“Good thinking, sis,” Hazel said. “Saved our butts with that.”

“Wanna make out on the couch when we’re done?” Michael asked.

“I’d love to, bro,” Craig said, smirking. River began kicking and fussing.

The girls chorused their distaste and Amanda took River. “See? Even River doesn’t need to see that.”

Eventually they finished, but were unable to come to a conclusion about who won their little impromptu competition. So Amanda took pictures and posted them on Facebook for people to vote for their favorite. When she was done, the twins were sent off to bed so that Santa could come around while they were asleep. River was put to bed as well. Amanda, Michael, and Craig stayed up a while longer and watched It’s a Wonderful Life.

It really is, Michael thought as he leaned in to lay his head on Craig’s shoulder.
