I have slowly been getting back to writing bit by bit and this particular story might not ever see the light of day (or at least until I find a way to finish writing it because I am not in a writing mood most of the time) but here’s a snippet.
I listened to Joji’s album Smithereens multiple times today and it is great fuel for writing angst hence, here’s the angst:
“You deserve to be happy.”
It’s the way she says it that makes him pause in his actions. It’s the earnestness of her tone and the genuineness behind her eyes, like she really, truly means it that makes him glance over at her. She had already put her coat on, her purse slung over her shoulder as she stands in front of him, waiting for him to get up and for Ben to come back from the rest room. He imagined seeing her again a million and one different times over but this particular instance wasn’t one of them - how she openly encourages him, to tell him words he hasn’t heard in quite some time. He always thought they could pick right back where they left off when he moved back to Chicago but clearly, that was a pipe dream. It breaks his heart ever so slightly, little cracks reforming in places he thought he had successfully paved over. He doesn’t know what to say so instead he lets out a slow breath thinking if she meant what she said. Of course she meant it because Sylvie doesn’t have a single bad bone in her. She doesn’t hold a grudge, doesn’t wish anyone ill. It makes him miss her all over again, miss her eternal positivity and sunshine in his life.
He stares at her intently and when she doesn’t break eye contact, as though challenging him to look away first, he utters the words he’s been thinking all this time, finally out loud, to the one person he’s been wanting to say it to.
“I was until I screwed it up.”

Someday feels a hell of a lot closer now
Tumblr media
Summary - Returning from a call, Matt Casey was the last person Sylvie expected to see at the firehouse. She had always imagined a reunion, him calling to say he was coming back, that he loved her and they could be together.
But he hasn’t called.
Maybe he had moved on. She had after all, well she had tried to. But do you ever really move on from the love of your life?
Notes - I’m not sure what 11x18 is going to bring in terms of Brettsey (and I’m currently spiralling at the promo pics) but in my mind they are still very much in love so I had to write a little something. AO3 Link
He was the last person she expected to see when they returned from their call that morning. It hadn’t been a particularly dramatic or traumatising call however Sylvie had barely slept the night before, her mind unable to shut off and allow her to find the rest she needed, so she was running on fumes. And now he was standing in front of her. She had imagined his return before, had seen herself running and jumping into his arms, letting him hold her tightly, refusing to be separated again. But she had always anticipated she wouldn’t be caught out, that he’d call her, tell her he was coming back, that he loved her and they could be together. She knew it was probably wishful thinking, she herself had moved on after all. Well she had tried to move on, but do you ever truly move on from the love of your life?
‘Casey!’ Violet said, the surprise evident in her tone. With a quick glance to her partner who was still rooted to the spot, she walked towards him and embraced him in a quick hug.
‘Hey Violet,’ he said, clearly happy to see her but his gaze was fixed firmly on the blonde still standing in the entrance to the room. Her arms had come up around herself, acting as a shield to stop herself doing something, although Casey wasn’t sure what. Throwing herself into his arms, slapping him across the face, turning tail and running, a combination of all the above. But she did nothing, just stood there.
Not wanting to cause a scene, he turned back around to converse with the other members of the house, the ones more obvious in their joy of his return. Sylvie slipped out of the room quietly, needing some time to process without the eyes of her housemates judging her every action.
Stella watched from her position at the back of the room, noticing how the colour had drained from her friend's face when she had seen her old flame in the break room. When Stella had invited Casey here to help her on a special task force, she had assumed he would speak to Brett, send her a text at least, let her know he was visiting. But judging by the look on her face, that hadn’t occurred and she had been blindsided.
She found Sylvie just a few moments later pacing back and forth in her office, teeth worrying her bottom lip, one hand continually running through her hair.
‘He’s here? What’s he doing here Stella?’ Sylvie said, not slowing her pacing as she questioned her friend.
‘Why don’t you sit down-’ Stella started before Sylvie shook her head.
‘I can’t, he’s here.’ Her voice broke when she said again, ‘he’s here.’
Realising she was unlikely to be able to calm her down enough to break the news, Stella just bit the bullet, ‘I invited him.’ Sylvie’s head shot up as she halted immediately at Stella’s words.
‘What?’
‘You know this task force the CFD asked me to assist on?’ Sylvie nodded her head slowly in response. ‘Well I called Casey and asked for his help, I’m well out of my comfort zone here and Kelly said Casey had been through this before so would probably be able to help. I thought he’d tell you Sylvie, I really did. I thought it would be better coming from him, but that clearly didn’t happen. I’m so sorry Vie,’ she said realising that the anger she had felt from Sylvie when she entered the room at being blindsided had ebbed away. Her friend sank onto the bed, her shoulders slumping forwards, all the fight draining from her.
‘He didn’t,’ she muttered. ‘I didn’t matter enough for him to let me know.’ She was speaking so quietly that Stella could barely hear her, her words clearly more for herself than for anyone else.
‘I’m sure that’s not the case Sylvie,’ Stella said as she took a seat next to her.
‘It would have taken a second to text me, to say he was coming back, so I wouldn’t feel like this,’ she gestured to herself as a few tears started to make their way down her cheeks. ‘Like someone has a hold of my heart and won’t let go. Does he not feel like this too? Like he can’t breathe.’ She dropped her head into her hands. ‘I thought I was over this,’ she mumbled, her voice distorted by the pressure of her hands against her face.
Stella just let her friend talk, she had no words that would provide any comfort. She was sure that there was a reason that Matt hadn’t reached out to let Sylvie know he was coming back, but until she knew what it was, she’s sure her soothing words would be of no use. Everyone knew how Sylvie felt about Matt, they had all seen how broken she was when he left, even though she supported his decision. They all knew about Matt’s feelings for Sylvie too, the truck crew especially, they had seen him jump out of a moving vehicle when the paramedic's life was in danger. The whole house had rejoiced when the pair finally made the move and got together, had been entertained at their attempts to keep it under wraps, had seen how much happier they had been together when their relationship finally moved from the will they won't they to the they definitely will status.
A gentle knock on the door shocked them both, and Sylvie jumped to her feet and turned around quickly so her back was facing the figure of the man who was causing the anguish she was currently feeling.
‘Sorry to disturb,’ Casey said, the apology evident in his tone. ‘We’re needed in the conference room Kidd.’
‘Yep, okay then,’ Stella said as she got to her feet, glancing back over her shoulder to where Sylvie was still standing with her back to them. She completely understood - Brett didn’t want Casey to see the effect his return had had on her.
‘I’ll meet you there,’ he said to her quietly, nodding towards Sylvie as he spoke. Stella shot him a wary look, a warning. ‘Just a moment,’ he said, reassuring her so she nodded and left the two alone.
‘Sylvie,’ he started, hoping that she would turn around but when it was evident she wouldn’t, he continued. ‘I’m sorry. I should have told you, but every time I tried, I just didn’t know what to say. I’d really like to talk later, if you want to. Just call me after shift and I’ll meet you wherever.’ He received no response to his words, so he turned to follow Stella. On almost a second guess, he turned around again. ‘I understand if you don’t want to, but really, I am sorry.’
Leaving Sylvie alone to silently cry in Stella’s office, the dam had broken at his final words. Hearing his voice again, the voice that had told her that he was in love with her and no one else, the one that had whispered words of love into her ear whilst simultaneously making her feel things no one had ever made her feel before. The same voice that had haunted her dreams for months after she had made that dreaded phone call.
——————————————————————————
She thought about it for the entirety of the remainder of their shift, about sending him a text, about giving him a call. The pros and cons constantly waging a war inside her head, each side winning and losing at equal rates. Her head was starting to throb with the continued back and forth.
He and Stella had been kept out of the firehouse all day dealing with their task force and when Stella had returned just after dark, Casey hadn’t been with her.
‘He’s staying at the loft so has headed back there,’ Stella had said to the unanswered question when she had sat next to Sylvie on the break room couch.
‘Should I call him?’ Sylvie asked quietly. ‘If you were me, would you call him?’ She added, sensing Stella’s apprehension.
‘If I was you, I’d want to know his reasons. Matt Casey doesn’t do anything without a reason, we both know that. But I can also understand if you want to close the door on that completely.’
Sylvie nodded, pulling her legs up onto the couch to wrap her arms around them. ‘He said he was sorry,’ she mumbled, resting a cheek on her knee as she looked across at Stella.
‘I think he is, he’s not quite been himself for the rest of the day. I think it’s been on his mind. But it’s your decision girl, I’ll support you no matter what.’ She scooted closer to her friend, wrapping an arm around her and holding her close. ‘It’s up to you,’ she whispered and felt Sylvie nod in response.
After a few minutes of Sylvie finding comfort in her best friend’s arms, she voiced the decision she had been fighting over all day. ‘I’m going to text him.’ She felt Stella’s arms tighten around her. ‘I need to know.’
‘Okay,’ Stella said quietly, hoping that this wouldn’t end in heartbreak. She had had to pick up the pieces last time that had happened, and she prayed she wouldn’t have to again.
——————————————————————————
Matt had hoped with everything he had that Sylvie would reach out after he had left 51 but a part of him was still shocked when her text came through asking him to meet her at her apartment after shift the following morning.
He would lie if anyone asked about it but he had spent a little longer on his hair that morning and had tried on 3 different shirts before deciding on a plain blue button down before heading over to Sylvie’s.
He wasn’t sure what to expect behind her apartment door, so took a moment to compose himself. He couldn’t blame her if she was angry, if she was upset or even if she was numb to his words. But she deserved an explanation, deserved to hear it from him directly, she was too important to him to hear it from anywhere else.
He knocked gently and waited. It wasn’t that long ago that he would just let himself in, her apartment had quickly become a second home to him, providing them a place to be themselves together without an audience. The door had protected them from the outside world, but now it was acting as a barrier between him and the life she now led without him.
Sylvie opened the door and he was once again floored by her beauty. Her hair was longer than it had been when he had left, now flowing past her shoulders, the light reflecting off it in a glow of a halo. Her pink jumper looked soft and warm, and he had to stop himself from running his hand over the arm of it. The blue eyes that used to look at him with nothing but affection, were now filled with sadness. And he had to swallow at the thought that he was the cause of such an emotion. Eyes that gorgeous should never be sad.
‘Hey,’ she said quietly, opening the door wide enough for him to walk through without needing to side step her.
‘Hey,’ he echoed, unsure of what else to say. ‘Thanks for texting.’ She nodded in response with a small smile that didn’t reach her eyes.
‘Do you want something to drink?’ She offered, ever the hostess.
‘Umm, just a coffee thanks,’ he said, remaining awkwardly just inside the doorway as she headed into the kitchen to make him his requested beverage. Glancing around the room, he noticed very little had changed. The couch they had spent many nights on, both before and after they had gotten together, still the main feature in the room. The shelves that he had helped put up when Sylvie had caved and asked for his help were filled with various knick knacks that he knew she loved. The frame that used to hold a picture of them that Stella had taken at Molly’s was missing from its spot on the fireplace and he was sure if he ventured into her room, the drawers that used to house some of his clothes would be refilled with her own belongings.
It was odd to feel like a stranger in a place that had once brought him the most comfort.
‘Shall we sit?’ Sylvie said as she returned into the living room, her hands clutching two steaming cups of coffee. Her tone wasn’t cold but wasn’t as welcoming as he was used to, but he couldn’t blame her for that. He nodded and took a seat next to her on the couch.
‘I’m sorry,’ he started, knowing that he had already said it but wanted to solidify that he meant it.
Sylvie nodded, all her focus on the mug that she had her hands wrapped around.
‘I know I should have told you I was coming, it wasn’t fair to blindside you like that at the house.’
‘No, it wasn’t’, she said softly, there was no malice in her voice, just sadness.
‘I tried to text you multiple times, drafted and redrafted what I wanted to say, but nothing sounded right. So I thought I’d call but I wasn’t sure you’d have picked up,’ he said quickly, the words spilling out of him faster than he had intended.
‘I would have,’ Sylvie muttered, her gaze still on the cup.
‘I know,’ he said quietly, letting his head fall slightly. Of course she would have answered, if it had been her that called him he would have picked up in an instant. ‘I guess I just thought if I heard your voice then I’d lose all sense of self and wouldn’t have told you anyway.’ He chuckled softly and thought he might have noticed Sylvie’s shoulders loosen, if only for a fraction of a second.
‘When Stella called, I knew I had to come back and help. It was only after I agreed that I realised I should have spoken to you first, warned you, asked your permission.’
‘Matt,’ Sylvie said as she turned to look at him. It was the first time she had said his name since he had returned, and it was such a welcome sound. ‘You never need to ask my permission to come back. Chicago is your home’.
‘It’s your home too and I didn’t want you to think I was encroaching on your space, invading your life or something,’ he said almost bashfully. He hadn’t ever said any of this out loud but somehow being around her again, all his walls were crumbling down.
‘I don’t think that,’ she said quietly.
‘But there’s something more,’ Matt said and allowed himself a moment to get lost in her eyes again like he had done many times before.
‘Something more?’ Sylvie asked curiously.
‘I’m thinking of coming back,’ he said quietly, not allowing himself to remove his gaze from her face, desperately searching for any reaction to his statement. ‘Permanently’, he added in case his intent was not clear.
‘Oh,’ she said, quickly looking away from him and back down to her hands, her coffee remaining untouched.
‘Griffin’s due to start at the CFD academy in the fall and Ben’s applied to colleges on the East Coast, I think he wants a fresh start,’ Matt said, trying to conceal his upset that Sylvie wasn’t more excited at the prospect of him returning to the city.
‘Griffin will make an excellent firefighter, I’ll text him and let him know how proud I am of him, of both of them,’ she said softly.
‘I’m sure they’ll love to hear from you,’ Matt said and when Sylvie made no further comment he persisted. ‘It just makes no sense for me to stay in Portland if the reasons that I went there no longer exist.’
‘I guess not,’ Sylvie responded.
‘So I spoke to Boden whilst I was at the house, technically I am still on the books at the CFD so getting assigned back shouldn’t be too difficult. I don’t think it’ll be to 51 though, but it’ll be good to be back in the city and around friends again.’
‘I’m sure everyone will be excited to have you back.’
Matt decided to throw caution to the wind. ‘Would you be excited to have me back?’ But he regretted it as soon as the words left his mouth when Sylvie’s expression shifted.
‘You can’t ask me that Matt,’ Sylvie said and he could hear her throat constricting as she spoke.
‘I’m sorry, it’s not my place,’ he said, and in an attempt to reset the conversation, took his still full coffee cup into the kitchen, dumping it out into the sink. He didn’t think he could drink it now even if he tried.
‘We haven’t spoken in months Matt,’ he heard Sylvie’s voice behind him and startled slightly, unaware that she had followed him.
‘I know, we decided it was best.’
‘Best for who,’ Sylvie muttered, picking at her long sleeves that she’d pulled over her hands.
‘I thought we…’ Matt tailed off.
‘We did, but…’ Sylvie glanced up at him, her eyes, glistening with tears, were as bright a blue as he had ever seen.
‘I know,’ he said, understanding her unspoken words. They had both agreed that it was more difficult to keep in contact when the possibility of them being together again was so far out of reach, but as the lack of contact remained, so did the ache of missing each other.
The need to reach out and take her into his arms was too much, he walked towards her but as he reached her she stopped him, her hand warm against his chest.
‘I’m seeing someone,’ she whispered, her head dipped low avoiding his eyes.
Her words knocked the wind out of him. In reality he shouldn’t be shocked, Sylvie was a beautiful, intelligent, driven woman, any man would be lucky to have her. He was lucky to have called her his for even a short time.
‘Oh,’ was all he said but he didn’t make the first move to step out of her space, and she didn’t remove her hand from where it rested just over his heart. ‘Is it serious?’ He asked before adding, ‘I apologise, it’s none of my business.’
‘He’s very sweet,’ she said quietly, not removing her hand to sever their connection, ‘but he’s not…’ she tailed off as she raised her gaze to meet his. The ‘you’ in her sentence remained unsaid but it hung thick in the air around them both.
‘When,’ she started and then, seeming to realise the awkwardness of their position, took a step back and pushed a loose strand of her back behind her ear. ‘When are you hoping to come back?’ She said, her voice steady as she spoke.
Matt cleared his throat before speaking, not trusting his voice would be equally steady. ‘Towards the end of the summer. I want to get Ben settled at school first and then be here so I can be close if Griff needs anything.’ Sylvie nodded at his words.
‘Makes sense,’ she said.
‘If I overstepped Sylvie,’ Matt said, sensing her discomfort. But she shook her head to shut him down.
‘You didn’t Matt, I should have said something but I didn’t…’ she flustered looking for her next words. ‘I’m sorry.’
‘Sorry for what?’ He asked, unsure where the conversation was heading but not wanting to close it down as it seemed like she had something she wanted to get off her chest.
‘For wanting what I can’t have,’ she whispered, barely audible in the already quiet room.
‘Who says you can’t have it?’ He asked, tentatively taking another small step forward, not quite back into her bubble but close enough he could smell the raspberry body wash he knew was her favourite emanating from her skin.
‘Well, I can’t have it at this exact moment anyway, it’s not right. Dylan doesn’t deserve that. He’s a good guy,’ she said, a little more assuredly, lifting her gaze from the ground and meeting his line of sight.
‘But maybe someday, it will be right,’ he wanted so desperately to take her into his arms in that second, to remind her of what they had but he settled for reaching out to take her hand, giving it a gentle squeeze.
‘I think it will be,’ she said with a small smile, looking down at their joined hands and returning his squeeze.
‘Come to Molly’s tonight? I leave early tomorrow morning but wanted to spend the evening with everyone before I go.’ It felt as though their conversation had reached its natural conclusion but he didn’t want to get on the plane the next morning without seeing her again. He had spent so long apart from her that the need to be back within the same breathing space as her was a necessity.
‘Okay,’ she smiled gently, not immediately removing her hand from his, so as he backed away to the door, their contact remained until the last possible moment when her hand dropped to her side.
‘And Sylvie’, he said as he reached the door and turned around, ‘when I come back. If you want it, my heart still belongs to you.’ He smiled, not needing an answer or possibly not wanting to hear it, turned and exited the apartment, leaving Sylvie rooted to the spot, her eyes wide but her heart was full.
——————————————————————————
The evening at Molly’s was lively, everyone excited to have Matt Casey back in their midst again. Sylvie was keeping her distance, not for the same reason she had the previous day, but because she wasn’t confident if she was in his space that she would be able to control her urge to reach out and touch him.
Matt smiled over at her on occasion, clearly having the same thought. They had separated earlier that morning with the promise of someday refreshed and alive in both their minds. Someday now felt like it was in reach and the thought of it was no longer an empty hope, but a tangible thing. The thought was proving to be a comfort to both of the pair.
‘You look cheery old friend,’ Hermann said as he handed over another beer to Casey from his side of the bar.
‘Just good to be back in Chicago,’ Matt said, smiling as he glanced over, Sylvie had laughed at something Violet had said from the corner at the other side of the room and his head had spun towards the sound without a second thought.
‘That just it, Captain?’ Hermann said with a grin, clearly digging for more information.
‘That’s it, Lieutenant,’ Matt said with a faux firmness, tipping his bottle in thanks before sidling off to continue his earlier conversation with Severide.
As the night drew to a close, Sylvie excused herself and made her goodbyes, hugging Violet tightly before turning to leave. Matt spotted her and hurried over.
‘Not leaving without saying goodbye, are you?’ he asked with a grin as she tugged on her jacket.
‘Figured it wasn’t goodbye this time,’ she said softly, smiling up at him.
Matt finally caved, he pulled her into him, wrapping his arms tightly around her and sighed when he felt her return the gesture, her small hands digging into his back.
‘Not this time,’ he whispered, quiet enough that only she could hear. He was sure if he took a moment to look around the bar, their friends would be giving them a few choice looks, but at this moment, he didn’t care. He had Sylvie back in his arms and the someday they had talked about felt a hell of a lot closer now than it ever had before. He tucked his face into her hair and let himself get lost in the possibility that the next time he held her like this, he wouldn’t have to go get on a plane, he wouldn’t have to let her walk out the bar alone, he wouldn’t have to let go at all.

I have a few thoughts about this Sylvie/ adoption storyline.
Does it seem rushed? Yes I wish they would have expanded this over 4 or 5 episodes and not 2 1/2. But this is Sylvie Brett we are talking about who feels things deeper than anyone else especially when it comes to babies/ children because of her experience of being adopted and having a loving family then meeting Julie in season 8 and hearing her story.
Remember in season 4 episode 3 when ambo was called to a scene to find a pregnant woman who was shot and she ended up not making it but the baby did. Sylvie did everything she could to make sure that baby had somewhere to go even so far as getting the father of the baby to change his mind. Even after everyone told her not to get attached.
Tumblr media
(GIF credit: Chenfordsbee)
The same thing is happening again but this time there is no one who wants this baby- not the mother or grandmother- and the foster parents aren’t looking to adopt so the baby will be put into the system.
Sylvie has grown since season 4 so much that she knows what she wants and knows she’s strong enough to do it alone (with 51 behind her of course because #foundfamily) she feels so strongly for this little girl because of the situation the baby was born in and the birth mother being the same age as Julie was that she believes that’s it’s her time to do what her adoptive parents did with her with this baby girl.
All of this to say that this makes sense for Sylvie’s character but I have no clue if this is setting up for Sylvie’s departure. I think I’d be okay with it if it ends with Brettsey endgame.
Let me know you’re thoughts! DMs are always open

Are you all caught up on the OC finales? What did you think?
I caught up today! I thought they were fine to really good!!
Med was really solid. Surprising no one I'm absolutely heartbroken that Will is leaving but I'm glad he went out in typical Will fashion, had a really nice scene with Sharon at the end, and we got Manstead endgame. Liliana and Dr Charles are back together! They're so flipping cute, I love that for them. Dasher are doing Dasher things, I had to LOL when Hannah was like HARD NO about dating Archer and he was so offended. I think Med's gonna return to somewhat normal next season, probs the first half will be dealing with whoever buys the hospital and convincing them to turn it not-for-profit again. The only question marks for me are whether Maggie and Dr Song stay. I think if they continue to do O.R 2.0 things, Dr Song will, and I think they've left it a bit open for Maggie depending on Marlynne's health and what she decides. I was a little surprised they didn't address it more in the finale about the possibility of her leaving since the episode before made it feel like much more of a sure thing. A solid episode!
Fire was... kinda meh if I'm being honest. Like it's not unusual for me to multi-task while I'm watching tv, but I still pay attention to what's happening with the plot, but I was dicking around on my phone while watching Fire and kept realising that I was fully not paying attention to what was going on and kept having to go back and rewatch. Like, it just felt like lots of talking ha ha. I think where we go from here is super dependent on whether Taylor comes back next season or not. Feels like they're setting up Carver and Violet, which I'm not against, but haven't fully let go of Carver in his feels over Stella either, so if T.K doesn't come back and Stellaride break up (BIG IF NO ONE THROW TOMATOES) they might continue to pursue that as well. I'm more and more on the Stella/Carver train (NO ONE HATE ME) so I'm super fine with those angsty looks he's sending her lmao. Super here for the little friendship between Kylie and Ritter and very keen for Kylie to become the new candidate (that has to be where this is going). Sylvie's adopting the baby, yay for her I guess, I mean, like I said in another ask, I'm pretty sure I know this is heading for a Kara exit, which I'm not opposed to, so I'm just very.... okay? about this storyline. It feels rushed, but it's fine, and I get a Brettsey endgame (probably) so fine. And Mouch... maybe I'm stupidly optimistic but I don't think he's dying. I think Christian is leaving the show, but I don't think Mouch is dying. Idek why tbh. It's a bit anticlimatic if he does die tbh. Like he didn't even get shot, it was a random piece of shrapnel. Idk, I think he'll probs survive and then retire. Maybe I don't think they'll kill him because it would mean that PD also has to change Trudy's characterisation over on that show. Like imagine her husband dies and they never even mention it on PD 💀💀💀
PD was the best episode imo. The pacing and writing was great, even though I'd seen bits and pieces of it already online I still felt drawn in by it and I really felt the tension. I felt like Adam, Kim, and Kevin all got to shine. Hailey and Voight not so much, sad for Hailey, get fucked Voight. Absolute snaps for Kevin getting to shoot that racist mother fucker, and I know he's just a kid but lmao fuck Callum. Fuck his mum too and I hope she goes down for some of this shit. One of my only question marks is why Torres wasn't in the ep? I can't tell if it's a weird writing choice to keep leaving him out of episodes or if the actor has some sort of other commitment keeping him from being in every episode, but I feel like they either need to commit to his character being part of the team, or drop him and bring someone who will be around all the time. Burzek slayed as always, inject that moment of Kim on the phone and absolutely sprinting to get to Adam into his veins. Kim in the ambulance, and at the hospital, "Are you his partner", "You're with Adam" "I'm with Adam" yeah girl you tell that bitch. You ARE with Adam. I mean, as with every other Burzek shipper I'm annoyed that they clearly filmed a Burzek scene at the hospital and then cut it. I hope they release it as a deleted scene at some point bc I need it. I've seen the theory that they cut it because it shows Adam's alright and Paddy might leave the show.... I mean.... maybe? I doubt it. It's more likely they cut it bc the show has a hard on for Hank Voight and wanted to end on him. I think it would have been a better ending to end with Burzek because it would have been a really full circle, cyclical ending from where they started the season, and the episode, but, what can you do? I'm sure someone will write the fic. Still, despite all that, a really great episode and end to this arc.
Sorry, this got long but yeah, those are my thoughts. Med 6/10, Fire 4/10, PD 8/10.

I’m a Stellaride fan and I’m also a Brettsey fan but I don’t like the promo. Last season we know that for the finale the major focus would be on Stella and Sev’s wedding - everyone talked about it, they showed us a sneak in a promo. Now they said that we will see how the case Casey made Stella involved with is going to end. Should be exciting, right? No, they show us sobbing Brett. This is how they want to make sure people will watch the finale? They say one thing and tease us with another (btw if she’s said yes after not talking to him for so long I’d be so disappointed in her but it’s another conversation…) when they use Casey come back as a promo the ratings didn’t go up - maybe show some actual action and people will show up? Just a thought
PS I want a happy ending for Brett and Casey, I’ve waited too long for that but this? Rushed engagement after radio silence for few months? Please, we (and them) deserve better than this
Yeah I mean I definitely think that depending this is the finale and the case is coming to a head that there should've been more action shots but at the same time, their promos are always so short and there might not be stuff they can actually show that'll ruin the action part of it (although that just might be my cpd self talking lol).
I guess I don't mind too much what was chosen to be in the promos for a few reasons, really. One; I don't find their action shots very exciting in the promos. Or rather I do, but I enjoy the actual scenes in the episodes better when it's not in the promo as the way they cut it makes it more disappointing imo.
Two; I love the action, but I'm primarily motivated by ships. That's what makes me watch in real time, and engage in fandom. So I always do prefer ship centric promos because that's what I tune in for. For action stuff only, I tend to wait to watch it all in one go.
Finally, three; I've largely stopped watching fire after Hawkins died. Now I might be getting back into it, possibly but that depends a lot on how this season ends and how next season kicks off. The only reason I'm remotely excited and planning on watching the finale is because of the brettsey interaction which means I don't mind the promo.
But I agree we do deserve better than this. The radio silence, the break up... and introducing a new love interest to Sylvie when we should've just got a few more episodes of build up about the baby, it all should've be done better.
However I am reserving my final judgement on that since it all depends on what the outcome of this baby storyline will be and whether or not this is paving the way for them to write out Sylvie from the show. Because of kara is leaving and this is facilitating that, then I'm not annoyed too much and especially not minding about the promo not being action focused, as the big thing of the episode would be a long time cast member leaving.
I am also reserving judgement just in case the outcome of this storyline is that we get brettsey back somewhat on screen, if Jesse has chosen to make a few occasionally appearances next season. It all just largely depends on why they have chosen to do this storyline and if it's anything to do with the actors availability.
Although either way or whatever the reason, I'm not totally upset about this storyline, if it is a proposal and if Sylvie does say yes. Because imo it does make sense with them, with how great their love is, and that the time apart from each other and then Sylvie's decision to try and adopt the baby has just reaffirmed that being together is what matters and is what they want.
The thing I'm most irritated at is that yes the whole thing was so badly handled all season, and they definitely never should've introduced the new LI. And that we should've got a few more episodes of build up to the baby.
So really as much as I have my annoyances, my possible happiness at all this outweighs them, for me.
Thank you for asking!! ❤️

Line: "And the saddest fear comes creeping in." Location: HGTV taping.
Alright time for a brand new AU universe.
You guys don't know it but I have an AU idea in my head for HGTV Brettsey for YEARS.
I am not throwing away my shot.
***
Sometimes Sylvie feels guilty about the lie she and Matt are perpetrating for the world, but then she remembers what it felt like to essentially be blacklisted from working and decides a lie is better than being homeless and starving.
Besides, this lie hurts no one but themselves. They're the ones who have to forego love lives in order to pretend to be an engaged home renovation power couple.
Their friends Severide and Stella introduced them years ago. Matt's business-partner-slash-ex had left him in the lurch. She sold him her half of the business, which was great, but she left him without an interior designer. Sylvie's ex and former best friend had taken all of her clients and run her out of town so she was an interior designer without any work.
She met Stella on her first night in Chicago while the latter was bartending at a firefighter bar named Molly's. Sylvie literally cried into her beer about her misfortunes and Stella was quick to help.
"You know, you're an interior designer with no clients and my husband's best friend is a contractor with clients but no interior designer. Maybe the two of you could help each other out?"
It was the suggestion that changed her life.
Kelly and Stella hosted a dinner to introduce her to Matt and they got along like a house on fire. Matt is funny, genuine, and thoughtful. The opposite of her ex. They also had similar visions for a few of his current clients. His design ideas for construction reflected her favorite interior spaces to decorate. Professionally speaking, they were a match made in heaven.
And their clients' feedback reflected that. As business grew so did their friendship. But since things went horribly wrong with Harrison and Hope, Sylvie promised herself never to mix business and pleasure. Matt felt similarly, considering his history with his own ex. Which meant, no matter how close they became or how her feelings evolved, they would always only be friends.
Even when the world and HGTV thought otherwise.
They hadn't meant to perpetrate a fraud but they got the offer for the tv show, signed the contracts, and then found out about a terrible misunderstanding.
HGTV thought they were married.
That was the real reason they wanted to offer them the show. They wanted half reality television and half home renovation. If they weren't married then the show would have been cancelled.
It was a shot in the dark that they would be picked up for a full season anyway. So, after a lengthy discussion, they went along with the story and decided not to fully correct their misunderstanding. As a compromise and an attempt to assuage their guilt, they told HGTV they were engaged instead of married.
By some miracle, they bought it.
And now, three years later, their show is still going strong and the American public thinks they're happily engaged and on their way to wedded bliss.
Only in Sylvie's wildest dreams.
Of course over the last three years, her pretend love for Matt Casey has become full blown, head over heels, unconditional love. Not that he knows that. She's pretty certain he's none the wiser.
"Cut!"
Sylvie's jarred from her thoughts by the sudden yell and shakes herself back to the present, taking in Matt's concerned face.
"Hey, guys," he requests, smiling politely. "Can you give us a second?"
The director nods and sighs tiredly. "Yeah, sure thing. Take five, everyone! When we come back we'll pick back up with the initial property walk through."
Once the crew has dispersed, Matt gently pulls her aside with a guiding hand on the small of her back. "Are you okay?"
She bites her bottom lip and idly spins her engagement ring, a habit she's developed when she's anxious. "That meeting we had with the network this morning..."
"I thought we said we weren't going to worry about that today?" He asks her, with a soft scolding stare.
"We say a lot of things, Matt, but that doesn't mean they're all true."
He snorts and chuckles at her, taking her left hand in his to stop her from twirling her ring. "We'll work something out."
"Work something out?" She says in a harsh whisper. "They want us to set a wedding date. A wedding date for our extremely fake engagement. A wedding date that will be used to market the renovation deadline of our future home that we're going to take on in the midst of all of our other clients and responsibilities."
"They'll compensate us appropriately so we can scale back our clients and focus only on our house. The workload will be fine," he assures her.
Okay, but that's not even the biggest part of her concerns! How is he so calm? How is he okay with marrying her, a woman he doesn't love? "Great, I'm glad to hear about the workload," she replies dryly. "Nevermind the huge wedding they want us to have, film, and then promote as a tv special. That's not a big deal at all."
He sighs and the sound comes off as hopeless and wistful all at once. His callused fingers grip her chin and lift her face until they’re eye to eye. Once he has her full attention, he brushes a loose tendril of hair out of her eyes and tucks it behind her ear. The gesture makes her stomach swoop in the most delightfully nauseating way.
Ugh, why does she have to be in love with her best friend and business partner? Why is nothing in her life ever straight forward?
"Look, I get it, no one wants you to marry a guy you're not in love with, least of all me. But we'll find a way to stall them. We've gotten pretty good at it over the last few years. We'll think of something. For now, though, let the network think they're gonna finally get that wedding special they've always wanted. It'll keep them off our backs for a little while at least."
She doesn't like his tone. He doesn't sound like himself. Not the flirtatiously playful version of himself he usually is when they're filming anyway. This is solemn Matt Casey. The one she sees most often when he’s stressed or anxious or in some sort of emotional turmoil.
He was fine until she let her fears get the better of her and got distracted during a heavy filming day. For his sake, she needs to get it together. She can sort out how to bury her feelings for Matt and get them out of this mess later.
"You're right," she says, taking a slow and soothing breath. "We'll figure out. We always do. I mean, whatever else our fans think we are, we've always been a great team." She smiles warmly at him, hoping the expression leaves her faith in the two of them on full display. From the day they met, he's been nothing but exceptionally good to her. Even if his feelings have never gone beyond platonic. "I don't see that changing anytime soon."
He squeezes her hand with an earnestly devoted look on his face that's too beautiful to be misread. "Not if I can help it. There's no one else I'd rather be partners with than you."
He means business partners. She knows he does, but is it terrible of her to internally swoon anyway? God, she's so screwed. How did she let this happen and how can she get out of it unscathed?
Matt Casey's going to break her heart and he'll never even know it.

Brettsey + “People say I’m heartless.”
This one takes place sometime early season 7.
Matt sighs as he flags the bartender to order a drink. The place was dark, far different from Molly's, but tonight he needed to escape. He orders a double shot of whiskey, thanking the bartender when the drink is set down in front of him. He takes a sip, allowing the alcohol to burn down his throat.
He's not going to get drunk. He just wants to be numb for a bit.
He's still reeling from the sudden reappearance of his mother. Nancy Casey really had shit timing - showing up at his home three weeks after Gabby left. He still doesn't know if he missed her all this time. Hell, he wasn't even sure where she was all this time. For all he and his sister knew, she could have been in Chicago all along, hiding in plain sight.
But she appeared earlier in the evening like some vision of his worth intentions asking Matt for money of all things. No small talk, no how are you, no hug, nothing but a request, or maybe more of a demand, for some cash without even giving him a valid reason.
He couldn't take it - what with his marriage imploding spectacularly that it could be studied by scientists and Gorsch watching everyone at 51 like a hawk that it sort of drove them all mad. His mother showing up after years was the last straw.
He told her no - he was absolutely not giving her any money and she shouldn't ask from Christie either. She chose to leave them, go away with some random penpal. She didn't get to waltz back into his live as if nothing happened. Sure, he had forgiven her for his dad's murder but that didn't mean he'd be at her beck and call whenever she deigned to show up.
She left but not before some choice words laced with vitriol. It was bad hearing it from his own mother but he didn't want her to see how it affected him.
Good riddance, he thinks, as he downs the last of his drink before ordering one more.
He doesn't notice the door swing open but he feels someone take a seat next to him at the bar. He glances to his left, surprised to find Sylvie looking back at him.
"Fancy meeting you here," she jokes, smiling. She places her clutch on top of the bar.
He takes in her outfit - a black, sleeveless top made of some kind of silky material and dark jeans. She had on heavier makeup than usual.
She notices.
"Before I explain, I'm going to need a drink," she tells him, flagging down the bartender, "double shot of tequila please."
He whistles in admiration when she downs the shot, tilting her head back.
"I had a lousy date," she says, grimacing at the after taste, "well, it was fine at first then turned really bad."
He raises an eyebrow at her, motioning for her to continue. He was content with wallowing in his own misery but misery did love company after all.
"I met this guy on a dating app. He's cute - looked like his photo, didn't give off serial killer vibes but in the middle of dinner, his wife shows up. Turns out, she tracked his phone and it wasn't his first time stepping out on her. What a tool," she states, rolling her eyes.
"More like a fucking asshole," Matt corrects.
Sylvie laughs, "yeah, he is. Ugh. That's the last time I use a dating app."
She makes a show of taking out her phone and deleting the said dating app.
They sit in silence for a few seconds. Sylvie orders another drink, a frilly cocktail this time.
"What are you doing here?" He wonders, watching as she fishes out the maraschino cherry from her drink.
"Having a drink with you," she quips, grinning.
He shakes his head but laughs nonetheless. Sylvie was like a ray of sunshine and it was not hard for her cheerful energy to rub off on him. He raises an eyebrow at her again.
"Fine - I'm sort of hiding. After that horrible date from hell, I didn't want to go home yet but I didn't want to go to Molly's either because it's too loud there, you know? Too happy for my current mood," she says before taking a sip of her drink.
"Huh."
Somehow it surprises him that Sylvie ever needed to hide away from people. She typically thrived in a group environment but he gets it. Her explanation was exactly when he chose this dimly lit bar too.
"What about you?" She asks, "why are you here?"
He stares at her for a moment, thinking about whether he wanted to share it but she told him her reasons and it was only fair that he did too.
"People say I'm heartless," he begins.
Well, not people but more his mother.
It comes tumbling out of him after those initial words like word vomit. He can't deny it feels good to say it out loud, to tell someone, to have someone listen to him as he recounts his own version of a horrible evening. He doesn't look at Sylvie. He stares straight ahead at a bottle of pricy gin on the shelf. When he's done, he chances a glance at him.
He's used to being judged so he wouldn't blame her if she did too, maybe admonish him for saying those things to his own mother, but she surprises her once more because her face doesn't contain one ounce of judgment. Rather, her eyes reflected a mixture of sadness and understanding.
She leans in, placing a hand on his shoulder.
"You are not heartless, Matt," she says, "I've known you, what, about four years now? I've seen you with victims and their families. I'd argue you have one of the biggest hearts of them all. Anyone who says otherwise is wrong."
She says it in a way that sounds so final, so resolute like how the sky was blue or the grass was green, like there was no room to argue.
"Thanks, Sylvie," he tells her, grateful, "next round's on me."
She grins, "ooh, I'm ordering something from the top shelf then."
He finds himself smiling too.
His night has started so badly and he didn't expect it to get any better when he settled himself on a stool at the bar but he's glad his night was turning around.
Who knows, maybe this would be the start of a long and beautiful friendship.

Would you ever write fanfic for Stellaride?
Hey, Anon. I've written a few fics for Stellaride, and definitely would, again. I just haven't had inspiration to write for them in a while. I stopped watching Chicago Fire after Brettsey got married and left. But if I got an idea or prompt for a ficlet or one-shot, I'd write for them. I just don't write chapter stories.

Baby Severide - Stellaride ft. Brettsey
Tumblr media
Fandom: One Chicago
Pairing: Kelly Severide & Stella Kidd ft. Brettsey
A/N: Originally posted based on headcanons
•••
A few days ago, a new addition to the Severide family was brought into the world and today she was finally going to come home alongside her parents. "When is baby sister coming home?" Kai, Stella and Kelly's 7 year old son kept asking and jumping up and down since he woke up. Currently he was following Kelly around the apartment, who was trying to get ready in time to pick up his girls from the hospital and bring them home.
"In about three hours. And I will leave as soon as Sylvie gets here. Will you be good while I'm gone?" Kelly was in awe of his excitement and went down on a knee to be on his level. "I'm always good, dad!" Kai answered in a very obvious tone. Chuckling at his attitude Kelly extended his arms and the little boy immediately went in for a tight hug. Just as they pulled away they heard a knock on the door. "Sylvie is here!" Kai squeled and ran towards the front door opening it. "How's my favorite boy doing?" The blonde asked giving the boy a hug and a kiss on top of his head. "He's waiting for baby sister to come home. By the way thank you for coming on such short notice." Kelly said as he took his wallet and car keys from the table. "No worries I'm just as excited as Kai to see the girls so now you can go get them." She almost pushed Kelly out the door and as he left Sylvie turned towards the little boy with a smirk on her face. "Are you ready to decorate the house?" She asked and Kai's face immediately lit up covering his mouth in surprise. As soon as Kelly drove away and his car was out of sight, Matt went up to the apartment with a bunch of balloons and decorations in his hand. "Oh my God, these are so pretty!" Sylvie exclaimed excited as she let Matt inside. "The cake is still in the car." He spoke putting some things he was carrying down. "Hey little man!" turning around he found Kai completely overwhelmed by all the balloons suddenly floating around him. "Are you ready to be a big brother?" Getting a nod in return he continued "Being a big brother is just about the best thing in the world but you're also going to be responsible to take care of your little sister when you guys get older, do you understand that?" "I'll be the best big brother!"
As the elevator dinged and opened on their floor, Stella was finally relieved to be home and far away from the hospital. "She hasn't cried once the whole ride home." Stella spoke partly surprised as she remembered the past few days when she discovered how healthy and strong her daughter's lungs were. Chuckling at her obvious remark, Kelly opened the door and they were met by a loud cheer of 'Surprise!'. Kai, Sylvie and Matt were all standing in the middle of the livingroom surrounded by pink and white balloons that read 'Welcome home baby sister!' and her birth date.
Kai immediately ran towards them and hugged his mom tightly. Taking the baby out of the car seat Kelly lowered her down to Kai's level and he could barely contain his excitement. "Kai, meet your baby sister Ava Elizabeth!" He was so in awe with her, as he looked at the small baby from different angles analyzing and admiring her every feature. "She's so small! Can I hold her?" He asked hopeful switching looks from one parent to the other. "Yes you can, go sit on the couch." Stella said and the little boy wasted no time running towards the couch and getting ready to welcome Ava into his arms. And once he did he pressed a gentle kiss on her forehead making Ava wake up from her deep slumber and look at her big brother for the first time. "Hi Avey! I'm your big brother and I'll always protect you!" Kai spoke softly and if it was humanly possible for a heart to burst of happiness, Kelly's would've been all over the place by now. Matt and Sylvie were stay back enjoying the beautiful family reuniting and taking in the moment.
"We wanted to ask you two something..." Stella dragged catching their attention as they were fixiated on the kids until now. "Kelly and I were wondering if you'd like to be Ava's god parents?" "Yes!!!" The both said in union launching towards them with hugs. "Agh this is so great! I'm so happy for you man!" Casey congratulated Severide giving his friend a hug. "Oh I just can't wait to see you two grow up" Sylvie cooed to her godchildren lovingly. After everyone went home and all the congratulations messages were answered the reality of having a newborn started to slowly settle in. As Kelly tucked Kai in bed, Stella was sitting on the couch looking at her little girl sleeping peacefully. When they adopted Kai, he was already out of the toddler stage so it was the first time Stella had a newborn to look after... and oh man it gave her so much anxiety. "Are you ready for bed?" Kelly asked as he carefully closed the door to Kai's room to not wake him up. "I'm freaking out!" Stella exclaimed and she felt as if she was holding that statement in for quite some time. "She's so small...am I even able to hold her and feed her and change her..." she continued but Kelly immediatly wrapped his arms around her in order to calm her down. "You're going to be able to do all those things and more...and she'll be fine." Kelly's words gave her slight reassurance but her worries never left. She had good and bad days, days when everything was going well and days when she felt like she could constantly cry. The big challenge came whne Kelly had to leave for work and Stella was left home for the first time alone with the kids.
Thousands of possible worst case scenarios went through her head but to her surprise most of the time everything was running smoothly. Kelly sensed whenever Stella was feeling down and on his down time while on shift he was researching post partum depression and actively asking Sylvie for advice. They both decided that bringing their own diagnosis on Stella would only make her worry more so Kelly took matters into his own hands. From taking furlough to be at home as much as possible to making sure Stella goes out from time to time to enjoy herself. And although the first few months were rough on both of them they surely and safely settled in their new roles of parents of two kids.
